Solve : Not enough disk space when trying to defrag?

Answer»

I am trying to defrag a mini Dell running XP that was given to me. I am getting a message "9% FREE but only 8% is available. Not enough disk space to properly complete operation, delete unwanted files" The capacity is 7.11 GB, free space 552 GB. I've done a disk cleanup, removed unwanted programs and emptied the recycle bin. How do I figure out what is left?Kill system restore, disable hibernation, kill any hibernation files on the drive, and for temporary sake, if there's an explicit setting for the swap file, put it back to auto and then restart.

Usually one or more of those is plenty to get a small HDD back to the 20% free that defrag would like to see.

There's also the -f switch which will force a defrag regardless of disk space. If you wanted to do this to drive C: you'd do the following:

Code: [Select]WindowsKey+R (Run Box)
defrag c: -f

One other thing to consider is taking a look at the "report" and sorting it by the "fragmentation" column. Doing that will put the worst files at the top and in a LOT of cases this will highlight some large temp files and such that can be nuked. Deleting a fragmented file is a double win because you don't have to defrag that file and it's less space/files to process.

As a last resort, you could do a search for files that are over a certain size, like 100mb, an if you find any that aren't 'crucial' you could move them off to a USB stick or USB HDD while you defrag. I will try it all! I'm a beginner so it may take some time to get to all these places! But I won't give up until it works! If you have an 8G HDD with only 500Mg left as free space you need to do some serious housekeeping...
Restore points etc. are not gonna cut it.What do you suggest? The advice to start by disabling system restore was correct. That will free up a great deal of space. You can then re-enable system restore and change the setting to use less disk space. You can then download and run treeesize (http://www.jam-software.com/freeware/index.shtml) to see what is using the space.I deleted some files and now have 10%. I'm just afraid to start deleting things. I didn't understand some of the things to do, so I may just leave it the way it is and hope for the best!Ccleaner is a good way to free up space, a lot of space can be freed up with that simple little program. Here is the URL for it http://www.piriform.com/Quote from: slotty on December 22, 2010, 05:34:35 PM

Any music; movies and pictures can safely be burned to DVD's.... they can be viewed right from DVD...

You may want to consider shopping for a larger HDD.After having freed up as much space, even if its way less than 15%, some of the commercial defraggers (like Diskeeper - has worked for me) will defrag in extremely low free space. You can try it out. Quote from: talontromper on December 23, 2010, 12:04:46 AM

Slotty,
If you are running XP, than stick with XP utilities.
All foreign utilities are a danger to your system.

Your system should have about 35% free space.
Unload movies, music, pictures old E-Mail and all those space grabbers from your system.
After all, why would you want to keep someone Else's stuff?

Be more diligent with XP's Disk Cleanup, Temporary Internet Files, %TEMP%, Defragmenter and Checkdisk
When using Defragmenter, monitor the Screen, make a change to a few Text files and run Defragmenter again. Keep doing this until there is nothing more to Defrag, it will take several times!

Stay away from Ccleaner if you are not familiar with it!Quote from: alexK on December 30, 2010, 06:43:12 PM
Slotty,
If you are running XP, than stick with XP utilities.
All foreign utilities are a danger to your system.

The included "utilities" Are the fisher-price equivalent of more full-featured applications provided by other vendors. The Disk Defrag Utility included in Windows XP is quite literally a stripped down version of the "dangerous foreign Utility" Executive Software Diskeeper.

Directly from the MS KB: (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314848)
Quote
The version that is included with Windows XP and later provides limited functionality in maintaining disk performance by defragmenting volumes that use the FAT, FAT32, or NTFS file system.

It says it right there in black and white- it provides limited functionality. This is why there is a market for the third party utilities, in fact, I'm pretty sure that MS is "too scared" to actually release a useful utility because they would no doubt face a backlash from the "dangerous foreign Utility" vendors.

It's interesting that you would label these third party utilities as inherently dangerous but you provide no citations. Are there bugs? No doubt. Have people lost data as a result? No doubt. But people have lost data as a result of chkdsk, and scandisk, and disk defragmentor and the be all end all of "dangerous software" the MS-DOS "RECOVER" command. None of those are third party utilities, therefore your assumption that any first-party utility is magically perfectly safe to use in any context is entirely false.

Is the SYSINTERNALS version of chkdsk, with free source code, any more dangerous then that provided with windows? No, it does exactly the same thing- and adds a few things for some operating systems. Additionally most of the functionality used by chkdsk, disk defragmenter and various other utilities are in fact inherent in the OS.

Quote
When using Defragmenter, monitor the Screen, make a change to a few Text files and run Defragmenter again. Keep doing this until there is nothing more to Defrag, it will take several times!

And what will this accomplish? Does nobody even understand what defragmenting does? because wasting an afternoon making sure that the built in utility does what it was supposed to do in the first place sounds like a gigantic waste of time, especially when there are free utilities that can *gasp* do it properly to begin with!

I spend close 5 decades in the IT industry, and know BL..DY well what a defragmenter does.
Both platforms suffer from the syndrome called "The Chaining Effect". It sticks / links the altered / new data on the bottom. Not in between somewhere.

-On a PC it will take several passes to clean up the mess. Have you really tested this out? Of course you would not spend the time testing this out because you consider it all nonsense.
-On a Mainframe, the files are unloaded and reloaded.

During the years I have seen enough Vendors with useless unreliable products.

It is safer to stick with XP utilities if have a XP. Period.

if you spend 5 decades in IT it doesn't logically follow that you know what a defragmenter does. Clearly you are proof of this.

No. new data is placed in the first available free spot. mainframes may be different but they are largely irrelevant in the context of Microcomputers.

Have I tested it out? you mean have I used the built in defragmenter repeatedly and edited text files to achieve what is a foggy and ill-specified GOAL at best? No,can't say that I have.
Quote

Again, Mainframe!=Minicomputer!=Microcomputer.
Quote

There are plenty of those, to be sure, malware, registry cleaners, and the like. But that doesn't make then any and all third party utilities bad. This is particularly driven home by the fact that the very XP utilities to are pushing are in and of themselves based on these "evil foreign software" programs that you are decrying, with very thin reasoning as to why.

Quote
It is safer to stick with XP utilities if have a XP. Period.
It's nice of you to make declarative statements WITHOUT any actual citations, but you're going to need to use something other then some off-hand knowledge about how a mainframe works to convince most people that you even understand how a file system works or how files are stored, let alone that you know what the best tool for messing around with those. Either way, I am forced to agree with your statement that it is "safer" but it's even safer to not run any utility to begin with. Additionally you didn't say that. You originally said that
Quote
All foreign utilities are a danger to your system.
Which is false.

Quote
By the way BC_P, do you always take your North American car to an Asian repair shop or visa versa?

Irrelevant; What you are saying now is that the windows utilities "know more" about how windows is working internally then the third party products, this doesn't begin to address the fact that the XP utilities are licensed versions of third party products; As I noted, for example, Disk Defragmentor as included with XP is simply a lite, reduced functionality version of a "asian repair shop" Executive Software Diskeeper. Microsoft has never written and provided a Disk Defragmenter with any NT-based OS that I am aware of. chkdsk can be duplicated in a few pages of C code, Diskmanagement simply works with well documented partition table and MBR information that is hardly specific to Windows. Disk cleanup doesn't really do anything all that different from CCleaner, since they both call the exact same functions to cleanup (I mean exact same- most Disk Cleanup ROUTINES are in fact external libraries that are added to by various products). Really it's interesting because what you are implicitly saying is that everybody should Use internet Explorer because it's "included" with the OS, and that somehow means it's "safer".

If the machine has a Product Key you can track down an XP Home edition CD and do a re-install...
This is perfectly legal.
You MAY have to re-activate at MS after the install.

NOTE: It should be a MS XP CD...not Dell; HP or other...
NOTE 2: The version must match whats installed.unfortunatly i have no product key for windows as it was installed when bought and have no windows cd.unless there is a way of getting the product number of my pc somewhere? Then check the Packard Bell website for info on re-installing from the hidden partition on your machine....
This is how their built if you did NOT recieve a CD with the machine.thats where my main problem is i use to have that option when i boot up my pc, i dont have that aoption anymore and i dont know why, there is no option to reboot.i dont know what ive done, but it looks bad.Quote from: patio on January 09, 2011, 07:09:29 AM

Solve : Audio is still garbled, on Realtek ALC888 with Dynex USB Headset?

Answer»

It seems that just when I connected my Xbox 360 pc controller, my Dynex USB Headset began acting up.

Whenever I use the microphone function, the audio comes out as though I was talking through a Nintendo Entertainment System (8 bit-ish sound), no matter what I play the sound through. (So it sounds the same, whether I play it through my Creative desktop speakers or through my headset.)

I've tried almost every kind of troubleshooting technique I could think of.
Removing the drivers then installing older ones worked for awhile, then began acting up again.
I tried rebooting (of course), that didn't fix it.

Updating sound drivers; nada.

I recall disabling the sound chip through my BIOS, BOOTING, rebooting, enabling it, then booting, ALTHOUGH that only fixed it temporarily. I've tried the headset in another computer with the same OS, and it worked fine, so I don't think it's the microphone.

I've tried shutting down as many electronics as I could (cellphone, air purifier, xbox controller, unnecessary monitors, wireless mice, EVEN lights), although nothing could fix the odd sounds.

Computer specs:

* MSI P6NGM-FD MOTHERBOARD
* Windows XP SP3
* REALTEK drivers, updated to R256
* Dynex USB Mon Headset

Also, here's a small soundclip of me saying hello, then blowing on the microphone.

Link

If anyone can help, that would be great.

Solve : how to delete all but neccesary files for o.s?

Answer» i have multiple drives in an attempt to store or backup all files including o.s ie x
p my files are now DOUBLED up and my. C drive is overloaded all i want to do. is sort all file
in all drives and save them on my f drive then return c drive with os to default ay
Idont want to lose my o.s cause i have no cd and can't seem to find a place to
buy a new one i don't want to download it so please don't refer me. Reverting to a restore point earlier might help but you likely dont have this option.

If you know of someone with XP Disc, you can use their Disc and use YOUR KEY that should be affixed to outside of computer. Just just need to identify which version of XP you have and then use media for that version.

I dont know of any tools to clean XP back to clean install state, none have been made probably because its just so easy to pop the disc in if you had one and wipe it and start fresh like an etch-a-sketch. Methods of setting it back to original build would involve lots of registry editing and then dealing with ORPHAN files and installations. It would be a huge mess that is more of a problem then anyone I know would want to deal with.If you have a real product key, you can install from a CD made from the ISO images of a XP system. This might not be well known, but there are some legitimate ways to download a real XP ISO file.
Of course it is not very easy. You can Google for the information.
I READ this 3 times and it's still unclear what EXACTLY your goals are...Just how tp use sort command and if possible how to list files. And all dir that are in more
than one folder ie joes music. all users joes music admi joes music
So i have 3copies of a song if you willThere are a large number of files with extension DLL found in the system area. But not all are needed to run Windows XP. To my knowledge, there is no simple way to REMOVE the ones not needed by the operating system.

Perhaps you may need to re-writes this phrase:
how to delete all but necessary files for os
Or provide a clear explanation of your objective.

Solve : Windows 10 and WindowsXP on same computer?

Answer»

Hi I have windows 10 on my c drive and I have just cloned windows xp from my old computer onto drive 2.

How can I choose which one I want to open on start up?. I have not been able to start xp at all yet.let me PROVIDE you a short answer. What you are trying to do is either not going to work, or else be a LOT more trouble than it's worth.
Here on this forum there is a policy against cloning Windows XP from one computer to another unless both computers are identical and both have the Windows XP product key. It has been suggested that owning Windows 10 would entitled you to use Windows XP also. But this is not really a policy of Microsoft. In fact, Microsoft does not encourage the continued use of Windows XP for anything.
Now that, after having said that, here are some points you want to consider.
Windows XP must be the first operating system installed on the hard disk. The hard disk must be formatted completely to the type of structure used by Windows XP. Specifically, Windows XP wants a hard drive formatted to what is called the MBR format.
May I suggest that if you wish to explore more about Windows XP, just use it on your old computer. You may be able to make space in your personal office to have both computers on your desktop. You can get a switch to switch back and forth between computers and your monitor. That is, in my opinion, the easiest and most effective way to enjoy to operating systems that you are to have installed.
Doing a dual install of Windows tenant and Windows XP will probably take more time than what you were spending. And the end result is not as good as having two separate computers. And this is not just my opinion, many others will tell you the same thing.First, there is a procedure you should follow to install multiple OS's on a system. Second, how did you "download" XP?Quote from: Geek-9pm on March 29, 2016, 11:38:56 AM

It has been suggested that owning Windows 10 would entitled you to use Windows XP also.
Owning Windows 10 does not confer the right to use XP.
Thanks for the help.
I cloned xp from my laptop onto a external hard drive then put it onto my second drive. I still have my ORIGINAL windows xp disc but I did not want to go through putting every thing back in.

I cloned xp from my laptop onto a external hard drive then put it onto my second drive.
This is almost certainly not going to work from (1) a TECHNICAL point of view - the laptop XP install would have all the hardware drivers for the laptop (motherboard, CPU, display, chipset etc) and is practically guaranteed to fail if you try and run it on a different machine also (2) the legal aspect: the XP install on the laptop may have had an OEM license in which case it is tied to the hardware of the laptop, and cannot legally be run on another machine. If it was a full retail license it would be for one machine at a time so you would have to uninstall XP from the laptop.
Thank you all. I have decided to put my old original xp that I had on an old computer. back on to the old computer.
Then I will not have to mess with my laptop and will still be legal. I'm having a bad day Trying to put windows xp back onto an old computer that had windows 7 on.
I have formatted the c drive and set the dvd drive to boot first. but it will not start to install windows xp. no ( press any key to start ) sign Is this the laptop ? ?...if so use the Recovery partition instead which takes it back to Day 1 status...Thanks all, I have managed to sort it out. Hello.
Today i try to install windows xp in my dell optiplex 755 using usb bootable drive it boot quite well but when it reach to windows is starting then Blue screen of death appears, and nothing can do any help with thisYou need to start your own thread.

Solve : PC Lag?

Answer»

Hello, guys. I'm not sure if I'm posting this in the right place. I'll try to explain everything in DETAIL.

Anyway, I'm having problems with my PC, it all started when I was playing a game (League of Legends, my PC can barely run it, and I think my hard drive was over-heating or something like that) after some time I heard some buzzing sound coming from my PC Tower it was pretty annoying, and it was going on for like 4-7minutes. I don't know where it was coming from (it seemed like it was from hard drive or video card) but I just didn't care about it until my FPS dropped to like 3-5 fps. Then I just immediately shut down the PC and turned it back on, then I tried to play the game again but my FPS was the same. So I took a break, didn't play any games for the rest of the day. The other day I couldn't play any games, my fps was like 3-7fps on all games. What's wrong with my PC? This happened like 2-3 weeks ago and I still got the same issue. Any ideas how to fix it? If it's necessary I can tell you my RAM, video card, etc.

I just found this forum and it's my last hope, please someone help me. I'd really appreciate it. If you need more information just ask.The most obvious PC component the "buzzes" is the PSU...

The most obvious PC component the "buzzes" is the PSU...

I'd borrow a known good one from a Bud and swap it in there to test...

Will that help me fix my lag? I found a bunch of videos of buzzing sound coming from PSU on YouTube but none of them were like mine. It's like super loud. Also I had the buzzing sound only when I'm in game, or WATCH someone streaming on Twitch, or something like that. (I don't have it anymore when I'm in game since all my games lag and have like 3-7 FPS. However, when I'm browsing, or having so many programs open I still hear it sometimes but it usually lasts a couple of seconds and it's very very loud.

Thank you for your reply.Without more detail it is a guessing game.
Lacking test equipment, the standard diagnostic is by substitution. You substitute an old item with something new, You keep going until you have idolater the cause.
In your case, the following might be good list.
Power Supply.
DVD Drive.
Video graphics.
Hard drive.
Network devices.
RAM .
Chassis fan.
CPU fan and heat sink.
Printer or scanner.
Other external devices.
Power cord.
Electrical power strip.
The mains voltage.

Any of the above has the possibility to cause strange behavior.

Run speedfan and see what your temps look like. Additionally run the computer with the cover off and try to locate the specific location that the noise is coming from.

Your frame RATE could be in the dirt if your CPU is running hot from a CPU fan thats chattering and not getting up to speed in which the CPU thermal throttles to avoid melt down and your performance takes a dive with it in this condition. You can get Speedfan here. Thanks, I just downloaded Speedfan and opened it while I'm running a game but I got no clue what does this mean because I'm really bad at these kind of things with PC, please someone explain me. What should I do? Is it that bad? What's my next step?

By the way, I'm always running my PC without the cover.

The bearings in the fan may have FAILED, which would explain the strange noises as well as why your graphics card is melting itself.Yeah, the issue was my GPU. I changed it to the old one I used a while ago. The one I'm using right now is at 52C most of the time. It still shows that fire icon but at least I have no lag anymore and everything's all right for now.

You may wanna put that side cover back on to maximise your in case cooling...
Adding a fan or 2 is relatively inexpensive for a HAPPY PC.

If you can find it, you want Windows XP three on a CD [ or ISO ] from one of the original equipment manufacturers. I do not recommend doing a download of Windows XP. Here is why. For one this forum has a policy against people making downloads that are likely a violation of copyright laws. I respect that. Also, a download from a questionable source will likely have some types of mall where or spyware in closed. So it's best to stay away from sites that claim they will offer you a free copy of Windows XP SP -3.
Service Pack 3 is free. It can be downloaded directly from Microsoft, and installed on any XP system. having SP3 slipstreamed on the disc isn't really necessary.

Quote
In my opinion, buying a copy or downloading a copy of Windows XP to maintain an old computer is just a waste of energy. Old computers have very little value, unless it's for Museum. The exceptions would be very high and models that might be worth preserving.
IMO, The value of a PC is in it's utility to the user, not in the reselling price tag. A lot of that value for the typical user is in the capability to browse the Internet and run productivity applications, a capability which can be reasonably well served with Windows XP on a 10-year old system. The fact that that 10-year old system might fetch 20 bucks if they wanted to sell it on eBay doesn't matter.

Quote
Now if for some reason you really, really need a legitimate copy of Windows XP SP-3 on a CD, be prepared to pay up to $300 for just one CD with the original materials and the product key. In my opinion you have to be a fanatic to want that. But then, each person might have his own reason for wanting to keep using XP forever.

Using a Windows XP ISO that includes SP2 as the base, it is possible to create a Windows XP ISO that contains SP3 by slipstreaming, as documented here.Quote from: Geek-9pm on January 31, 2016, 04:12:15 PM

However, there is one situation that would appear to justify maintaining a system with Windows XP. That would be the case where a certain piece of software works best with Windows XP or is not available for use on newer operating SYSTEMS. If that is the case, one could just go out and buy a mold computer that has XP already installed on it and use that refurbished PC for the JOB.

XP on my system only requires an update to SP3-- there's no need to worry about ACQUIRING a full XP CD, nevermind risking downloading it and all that, or buying a whole other used computer! To think that a computer must be fully modern and up to date to have much value is short sighted. Even with just Win XP, an older system can do lots; surf the web, burning CDs, games, transferring files from mobile devices, playing video, audio processing, etc. And that's just lousy Win. To measure a PC's worth solely by the Win version it can use is a gargantuan oversight. If installing higher quality OSes the value goes even higher. Some are designed to be particularly fast and efficient on older hardware, if one is especially concerned with performance, like Legacy OS. Otherwise, other Linux flavors are modern and up to date, unlike XP. There's further OSes like AROS, as well.

Quote
Most of the refurbished personal computers out there are from manufacturers like Dell, HP, and Gateway. Such computers will continue to have replacement parts available for a long time because there are so many of these sold to business users and these were traded in for new computers.

Don't I know it. A month ago I ordered a replacement CD burner from Dell.

Someone might think that I should mention using torrent sites to download copyrighted software. Well I am not going to do that, but it's very easy to find such. All you have to do is keep doing searches on the keywords download and Microsoft XP and eventually you'll find some site somewhere that offers the complete version as a download that can be made into a ISO file.

Firstly, I wouldn't pay 1% of that for an XP CD. I'm seeing a lot of contradictions. You give a lot of anti-XP sentiment for someone who uses XP all the time. And "I'm not going to mention X, Y, & Z, but here is how to do it anyway." LOL

No question there.

My intention was to say the someday soon any older PC will not be able to get on the internet, or any kind of communication system, unless it has a new OS. When that will happen is uncertain.

And yes, I still use XP a lot. It is just too hard for me to change. Presently I am more productive with XP. It is not that I love it, but it is what I know well. If I could, I would still be using Windows 2000.
I'm gonna call you on that Geek...and you need to think thru what you post...

Where is the basis in logic of that broad statement ? ? Are ISP's all of a sudden stop servicing older PC's ? ?...are modems all of a sudden gonna stop functioning cause you are running XP ?
Please explain this dire prediction...

My prediction is premature.
Basis:. Security standards are changing.
Many users want to get Internet via wireless. In some places only wireless is the only choice. Windows XP had a serious flaw for wireless security. It was fixed with an update. Now in the future, there may be a new security standard taht most ISPs will use on wireless. The new standard will not be supported by XP if Microsoft does not want to do it.
Yes, this is conjecture until it happens. Bear in mind, the older wireless standard was claimed to be very good. It was, until it wasn't.
Really, I want to be wrong. I don't want to leave XP. But I fear someday I will either leave XP or have no effective security on my system. Quote from: patio on February 17, 2016, 03:39:21 PM

Believe it or not, I've seen this happen with sufficiently outdated systems. It's not the modem or any local hardware, it's the ISP. But, it's not deliberate, I don't think (though some are definitely worse than others, as they won't assist you adjusting your TCP/IP settings). As the internet protocols are updated, there becomes a point eventually, that transfers just don't work anymore. My AMIGA system experienced this, where I could get a TCP/IP connection, but HTTP simply would not continue-- would constantly stall out, when that never used to happen. I noticed that if I was using telnet simultaneously, it would somehow keep the web transfers going, and if I stopped telnet they'd stall out completely again. All/most other internet protocols worked still, just not HTTP.

This is why I didn't say anything about Geek-9pm's claim. However, there should always be a current Linux OS for old PCs... except maybe truly ancient ones.

What "wireless" exactly are you referring to that ISPs support? Is it via direct ISP <--> customer microwave link, via satellite, or just Wi-Fi you are TALKING about? BTW, the Wi-Fi carrier signal is not actually coming from the provider, it's coming from your router.Quote

Let me explain. Xfinity is one ISP that offers 'hot spots' in some cities. Likewise AT&T. In some locations thee is no reliable land line service, so there is no DSL. Therefore users in that predicament rely on either 4g, very costly, or a 'hot spot' from an ISP.
Here in California Digital Path offers wireless Internet service to customers who can not get reliable service from other providers. Here whee I live, the DSL service is very bad because the local Telephone company will not replace or repair the the old broken copper wires. So they stop having new DSL service in this area. Either you go cabele or go 4G or wireless. Or satellite.

Right now, I use 4G and a cell phone 'hot spot' to link my old XP into the Internet. Before that I had to use my neighbor's wireless guest account. If a new level of security becomes a requirement for wireless, I may have to quit XP and go to using Windows 7 or 10 for Internet.

My rant was about how XP someday might not be able to use a wireless connection and for some the wireless would be the reasonable choice. But if XP does not wokr, you would have to go Linux. The point I wanted to make is that someday XP will be useless for Internet for people who have limited resources and would not buy additional hardware to let XP make an secure Internet connection using wireless from a local ISP.
My conjecture is that some time in the future, Internet will be unavailable to users who wish to use older equipment for economic reasons. Like me.
That ISP companies are going to use more wireless for the 'last mile' is already a trend. Here is an article about three years old.
http://www.pcworld.com/article/2067283/meet-wisp-the-wireless-future-of-internet-service.html
Quote
Meet WISP, the wireless future of Internet service
Utah-based Vivint, a newcomer to the WISP market, is offering wireless Internet service at upload and download speeds of 50 mbps for just $55 per month. But the company—best known for its home-security/automation services—has only just begun to roll out its service, which is not widely available outside Utah.
You have to read the article to catch what it is. It really is ISP over a wireless link. It is not the same as satellite or cell service. But a satellite company might use wireless to provide the link to your home. That reduces the equipment cost.
I hop this is clear.

Back to topic. Keeping XP up to date with the .NET framework is a dead end.
.NET Framework versions up through 4.0 are supported and can be installed on Windows XP. 4.5 and later cannot be installed on Windows XP (except perhaps with some sort of hacks I suppose). Note that, once again, .NET Framework versions are independent products. Installing .NET 3.5 isn't an "update" for .NET 1.1.

The only Driver-level type software I'm aware of that uses .NET would be AMD Catalyst, and that is separate from the core driver package. I've never heard of or seen any wireless adapter drivers or "security protocols" which require .NET versions at all, let alone 4.5 or later.
My XP media ctr net framework issue is very similar from the start about adding 1.0, 1.1,2.0,3.0,& 3.5,but not sure how sp1, sp2, sp3 are fixed within with all these net framework 1.0 to 3.5 ? I know I have 1.1 net f.work installed in my program files, but at start up a amd cataylist prompt says I need to install 2.0 net f.work for the amd program to work properly? My PC device mgr. account says I have sp2 installed, by choice I decided to install Microsoft sp3 final version which loaded, but seems I might need to install the other net f.work's for making it complete & working correctly ? I do have all 5 net f.work in file folders, but not sure if they can be used as my 1.1 & 3.5 are now (only) ? I believe if I can fix, repair or install these 5+ net f.work's I can go back to playing my few good shooter games & other OS functions too once again ? :That would be GREAT

Have an old computer which i am going to bin/recycle. I have taken the files i want off it. now i want to completely wipe the computer of everything including the operating system although i dont have the windows disc anymore.

but hitting snags everytime.

Any ideas? help greatly appreciated.

thanks
DavidIf it has a CD or DVD drive you can boot off, and you also have another computer with a cd or dvd writer, you can DOWNLOAD a free Linux ISO such as Knoppix or even better for this purpose, Gparted Live, burn the ISO to a blank disc, and then you can wipe the hard drive in the computer you wish to recycle. Or if the computer is headed for the trash, just take out the hard drive and smash it.
What kind of snags are you running into?Remove the HDD...then there are a bunch of creative ways of destroying it...tried using gparted live, but it doesnt burn to a disc, reaches about 80% then aborts.
tried BURNING the iso using another computer, it burns. but when i put it into the computer, i want to wipe, nothing happens, and the gparted options dont appear on the bios menu EITHER,You can use a strong magnet1. Do the system that you are attempting to wipe have a CD or DVD PLAYER installed in it?

It should also be noted that you back up files/documents in your case that you need to upgrade to SP3. If successful on the repair process, transfer your files and upgrade. The updates for XP SP2 are no longer supported so you cannot make windows update an option after system repair. @Allan: Yes
@JJ 3000: I mean the device manager shows as if no devices are detected. No, that's not what I'm saying. Previously, I could connect to internet with "Safe Mode with Networking". Solve : Registry problems?

Hi PEOPLE, ive been having problems with lagging while playing css. Ive tried fixing the lag numerous ways without luck. The lagg only started after a fresh reinstall of windows XP. Before the reinstall i had no such problems.

Ive been instructed to go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\MULTIMEDIA\SystemProfile in the registry and go to NetworkThrottlingIndex and change the value.
Only THING is i cant see MULTIMEDIA\SYSTEMPROFILE in my registry. Its not there.

Also when i go to services.msc and look for the service Multimedia Class Scheduler i cant see it either.

Anyone know whats the problem here?

Please help.Where is this advice coming from ? ?

Did it ever play correctly ? ?did you reinstall all drivers after the reinstall?Steam support were giving me the help.

It always played flawlessly, its only on css, not happening on other games.

After reinstall, i installed all the drivers, sound, graphics and so on, also made sure i had the most up to date. Thing is it could be the new nvidia drivers thats causing the problem and i dont know about it. But i cant get the old drivers before that.Dear dont do anything with registry editor.?, what you mean?Quote from: Bishu on January 06, 2011, 07:09:25 AM

But I don't believe it will help anything either. Solve : Linux lovers what is the best Linux OS that is as fast as a MAC desktop?

Answer»

I have a WindowsXP SP3 that has I have risen after sitting for several years. It would not boot so I fixed that and was told not to mess with it because it was so old. Machine is a Dell Dimension 4700, with Pentium 4 Processor and I think it has 3GB of memory installed. The IE and Microsoft ITEMS are hardly legible, way too pale. I have tried several things tweaks to fix this. It does load and run great. Unfortunately I had to install the IOBit Advanced System Care to help me get it up and running. I have been reading about the Linux by a few of you who seem to greatly favor it. I need an OS that is very easy to setup without my having to spend hours trying to understand what I should do next. Would I be better off doing a clean reinstall of XP or can I get a better/smaller OS. All I do is Webkinz and search. I am really weary of dealing with Window. I got a laptop that has Windows 10 that I am very unhappy with, too slow. Just THREW this in FYI. I will be trading it in for a Mac Notebook Pro with 8GB to do my work on using this XP for play, etc. I am open to all suggestions except th trash it. It is too good for that. While I use Linux full time, it's certainly not a magical solution to a slow PC, the PC is extremely old and even with a lightweight Linux OS it will still be slow. The OS is only part of the problem, even if you somehow install a magical fast distro, your web browser will still struggle to run well on the weak PC.

There are easy to learn and well supported distros out there (Ubuntu is pretty good as it's so widespread meaning there's tonnes of support online) but no matter what you go for it will take some getting used to.

If I'm totally honest, if you have a brand new MacBook Pro I can't think of any reason to keep using that Dell, you may be attached to it but it's really out of DATE and several times less powerful than the mac will be. The mac will be so fast, I imagine the Dell will feel even slower once you get used to the mac. If you want more of a desktop experience there is nothing to stop you connecting the MacBook to your monitor, keyboard and mouse and essentially using it like a desktop. By all means don't trash it and keep it around for tinkering with, but it seems silly to use it when you have a significantly better machine. My mistake...i thought you already installed...Camerongray thank you. I don't have the notebook pro yet. I have had several years exp using a wonderful iMac 2008. Started with Snow leopard and latest install of new harddrive updated with El Capitan. After the install and new harddrive I brought it home and it would not come on. Took back to tech and he got it to boot. Got it home and had to wait most of day after getting it setup for it to boot/come on. I could not move it to keep it running and forgot that I plugged it into wall outlet rather than Surge Protector. We had rain with no lightening or storming but power went out for 3 hours and Mac no longer turns on. I have plugged it in for a couple days at a time ant the top and left side get warm but that is it. It has been a wonderful machine. Do you think it is fixable?Another problem is that this machine has only 30% free space and I believe all memory is just about used. That is why I am trying to get memory reduced in hope that it will function better until I can get a better machine that is not Windows.
Would it run better if I just wiped the OS and did a clean reinstall of the old Windows XP? If I did this I would have to get all the Security updates and install them again which took me a very LONG time when I was forced to use this machine again. yuk yukYou could try one of 10 of the most popular lightweight Linux distros. I have not used any of them, so I can not comment on ease or difficulty of learning to use them. Quote from: pattybrew on August 05, 2016, 10:00:21 AM

Almost certainly. It would be faster than trying to diagnose and resolve all the myriad issues that you've only vaguely mentioned " The IE and Microsoft items are hardly legible, way too pale." for example.

I have Pentium 3 and Pentium 4 Systems with 2GB of RAM and can browse the Internet fairly reliably with Firefox on both. How would I do that? Uninstall the whole thing without REBOOT, then insert the CD for reinstall?Quote from: BC_Programmer on August 05, 2016, 12:34:37 PM

Before machine died years ago I did a lot of photo editing and it is full of pictures from my camera which took up most of the memory. I think I have them all on cd's now. That is something I will address before wiping the OS clean.

Solve : XP lock up on start up?

Answer»

Hi there,

Hoping someone can guide with an annoying problem.

I'm running XP professional on a desktop which is now about 4 years old. No issues to date, Windows automatically updates, so it has the latest SP3 etc, and I run Norton 360 Premier antivirus again fully updated with auto scans switched on - these are showing 'clear'.

When starting up it runs fine, and gets to the user log on screen - (we have multiple users ,although now its primarily me and the wife, the kids now have laptops, so rarely if ever use this). This displays the user list as usual but then all hard disc activity ceases, and neither mouse nor keyboard work (both plugged in - not wireless).

I have to reboot by holding down the power button, i can then put the PC into Safe mode where all seems fine, and this enables me to go to an earlier restore point, and all then works without any issues. However, next switch on and back to square one again!!

This started over Christmas, there's only been me using it, so as far as I know nothing has been added or amended in hardware or software. I've checked the windows update site and everything to date was loaded.

Occasionally it will boot up normally, but then next time this issue.

The PC was bought new, pre loaded with XP, but no XP disc just the suppliers RECOVERY disk. From memory XP is in a 'hidden' partition. I installed Partion Magic at new and that has always run fine.

Obviously something is corrupted somewhere, and it obviously keeps re finding this corruption even though there are newer restore points after the restore.

So any ideas where to start please?

Thanks

SemrotsOn those occasions you are able to boot to Windows do things seem to run smoothly? If so, let's try a clean boot and see what happens. Open msconfig and choose a diagnostic startup (disable everything from loading) and reboot. Does it boot properly?

Thanks Allan,

Apologies for the pause - did it and then as I use a Belkin USB WiFI adapter lost connectivity!!

Right when Windows boots and I do get in everything seems to be exactly as normal, no noticeable issues.

I used msconfig in diagnostic mode and it booted up correctly and I could log in. As said with minimum services I'd lost the internet connection. I went back to safe boot to go for the usual system restore and its now saying there are no restore points. Whilst messing about one has appeared dated today, but all the previous ones have apparently gone, it won't let me go back to December in the calendar.

I have got going again by adding in what I thought appropriate services until it would work, so this has meant a number of selective starts under msconfig, until the connectivity returned - a normal reboot just got me forzen at the usual point, and I couldn't do a restore from my earlier restore point as outlined above.

I now have everything under both System.Ini and Win.Ini ticked. Under services whilst ticked some are shown as running and some as stopped. Presumably the stopped need others ticked to run? Anyway the ones ticked and running are:-

DCOM Service Process launcher
DHCP Client
DNS Client
TCP/IP Netbios helper
Network Connections
Network location awareness
Plug & Play
Remote procedure call
System restore service
Terminal services
Windows Management Instrumentation
Windows Driver Foundation - User mode...
Wireless Zero Configuration

as said some others are ticked but shown as stopped.

In addition the Belkin Wireless USB Adapter is ticked and running, and whilst not ticked Norton 360 is shown as running.

When ticking services the 'APPLY' button became live, but clicking that brought up an error box saying An access denied error was returned while trying to change services, and I may need to log on as an ADMINISTRATOR to make the specified changes. I am an Administrator on this system.

Lastly when I could do a restore from the earlier known working point (25th Dec) it has become noticeably slower in doing it each time. Not sure if this is normal or relevant.

Thanks

Semrots

Okay, it appears to be something loading with the OS causing the problem. Start adding startup items back in msconfig one or two at a time, rebooting after each change, until the problem recurs and you'll have identified the offender. It's a time consuming process, but if indeed this is the issue it's the way go.Thanks Allan,

I thought that might be a way forward.

I'm in the UK so a job for tomorrow night.

I'll let you know the outcome.

Cheers

Do you have User or Family Accounts? Try disabling created Family or user Accounts. Some problems are resolved by this steps. System restore will create you temporary solutions and if you chose the wrong restore points will only cause more harm in your case. You could also RECREATE another account. Thanks guys,

Jason they are user accounts, i.e. wife and I are 2 Administrator type users, the two boys ordinary users, but the boys rarely if ever use it now as they ahve laptops. Whilst getting to the screen where the users are listed so they can click and log on, that was where it was stopping, so you couldn't even log on.

However, trying Allan's process of elimination by reselecting services it seems that 'Workstation' is the one causing the problem, unselected and with everything ELSE ticked it all seems to work, but with it ticked we get the stoppage.

So I guess the question is what to do to resolve whatever is wrong with that service - and what is it?

Thanks

Semrots

If you don't use a LAN network feel free to disable the lan service. You'll also find the startup is significantly faster.Thnks allan,

no network used ( I just connect by wi fi to a router). So how do I disable the Lan service please?START - RUN and type: services.msc then press ENTER. Scroll down do Workstation Service and set it to DISABLED. Apply (or okay), close services, reboot. Many thanks Allan,

All now seems working.

Solve : can't delete Avast anti-virus?

Answer»

My Avast got to where it wouldn't update (definitions or program ) so I decided to delete it. When I tried thru add/remove programs I got a repair option screen which I used. It said it was fixed and to reboot. When computer restarted I got a AvastUI.exe has a problem and needs to close plus a fatal DR. Watson error. I tried to uninstall again and computer was unstable but straightened out. I've tried to uninstall using Avastclear.exe but I can't get past the first page because I don't have a "continue" button like I should. I've called Avast helpline and they say to put in a ticket but their site won't let me do that and it won't let me register on their forum either. Don't understand those ISSUES. I also tried several uninstaller programs none of which would remove the program from program files but one ( Geek I believe ) did remove it from add/remove programs list , the desktop icon and got rid of the AvastUI.exe error. It was suggested I download newest Avast and try to delete from there which I'm going to try. Any and all advice APPRECIATED. thanks You could try this.
•AVAST! Removal Tool - Avast! uninstall utility
The Avastclear.exe I was talking about in my POST is the Avast uninstall utility you gave me a link to. It is what I didn't have a "continue" button for after I opened it. I have downloaded it again and the same thing only now it won't even open. Is there any other way to get it to run? Wingows Task Manager won't even shut it down - the wheel just keeps spinning. These Avast files/programs have apparently gotten really screwed up Uninstallers won't work either so is there any other way to get Avast off here - perhaps with the registry? Would file shredder help? When I try to delete it using delete it says "access is denied" and I am the administrator! Since Avast won't open or work is there another anti-virus I could use that would work with the Avast program still on my computer? I need an option because it's only a matter of time before I get a virus. I am limiting my web browsing to almost nothing to avoid that though. thanks againI wouldn't recommend messing around in the Registry. The only way I can suggest is to delete everything pertaining to Avast. You can use unlocker to delete those stubborn files. You should try Avira for your AV on XP

You can download and install Unlocker here. .Make sure you decline any free offers so they won't get loaded on your computer.

Avira AntiVir PersonalYou should also try running that removal tool in safemode...Try CCleaner portable.
https://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/builds
2nd download, not the first.

Run the registry cleaning tool. When it asks if you want to backup before it cleans, say YES. That way if anything goes wrong, you can very easily restore the registry. It doesn't the cleaning so you don't have to go through everything.I will try the unlocker and see if I can delete Avast in program files. I know I will have a lot of it left in VARIOUS files but if that won't interfere with Avira that might be ok. I have CCeaner and have checked the registry for errors - don't see what good the portable cleaning tool would do ? Patio, I did try to run the removal tool (Avastclear.exe ) in safe mode (only option really) but like I said I didn't have a "continue" button when it opened up so I couldn't continue. The file downloaded normally and was 7Mb like it should have been - why no "continue" button - my computer? If I could run that it might fix my problem but after the way their repair option screwed things up when I was going to remove Avast in add/remove programs I doubt it. I will see how things work out and get back to you. Please stick with me. thanks once moreI did not know you already had CCleaner installed. I normally recommend the portable tool because some people don't like to add yet more things to the registry by running a program they might never use again.

Have you run CCleaner? Did it find any orphaned registry entries for Avast?DO NOT run the registry cleaner module of ccleaner (or any other registry cleaners for that matter). Although ccleaner's registry cleaner is among the most benign of the group, there are NO good registry cleaners and none of them do any good whatsoever. In fact, some registry cleaners will leave your system unusable.+1 ^^^

Solve : Necessary apps in Firefox on my Windows XP SP3??

Answer»

I need to clean out Firefox on this machine, Dell Demension 4700 with Windows XP SP3.
Firefox is ver 47. For some time now I have been searching for answers to this. If I am posting in wrong area please forgive and tell me where to go. Thank you so much.
Here is the list of optional items in Firefox Plugins that are in question:

Real Downloader Plugin
Real Networks RealDownloader Chrome Background Ext
RealNetworks Real Downloader HTML5VideoShim Pugin
RealNetworks RealDownloader PepperFlash VideoShim plugin
Microsoft DRM disabled
Shockwave for Director disabled
Windows Presentation Foundation
I don't even use Firefox anymore because it is so slow. It looks to me like it has some of Google Chromes Plugins in it. Are they necessary in Firefox.
Thank you so much for your help.I set to 'never activate' and will see how that does. Wish I could easily remove them without having to totally reset FDF. Thank you for your help!!.Easiest way to clean out firefox is to uninstall it and reinstall it.

Given age of computer, you mentioned it being slow with firefox. Only methods of making that computer faster would be to make sure the hard drive is defragmented and you have at least 1GB RAM as well as the GPU/video card is POWERFUL enough to handle whatever multimedia or games you might run.

*My daughter is running a Dimension 4600 which I upgraded her from a Pentium 4 2.4Ghz to a Celeron D 335 2.8Ghz. The Celeron D 335 2.8Ghz CPU runs stronger than the Pentium 4 she had in it prior with the added SSE3 instruction support, even though there is only 1/2 the cache of the Pentium 4. If your system is running the Pentium 4 HT series CPU then thats probably the fastest CPU you can use or its not worth buying one that is a few more HUNDRED Mhz. Also adding a Geforce 6200 8x AGP video card with 256MB video RAM drastically improved STREAMING ( youtube, hulu, netflix, crackle, etc ) as well as games, as well as flash content in websites.

Are there specific things in firefox that dont run well and lag? DaveLembke
The poster, pattybrew, says she is a beginner. So lets make it easy.

If one were to try another browser, it may become clear what is making trouble. For Windows XP one can use IE 6 and it should work good on many web sites.

Only a few add on programs are needed. Most often some kind of video player or something like that. But it depends on what site you view.

The fact that something might work on my old computer is no proof it will another composer running XP.

For awhile, I had to stop using Firefox. Strange. I never did understand what it was doing. Anyway, there are lots of other browsers one can try. In my opinion it is easier to change browsers and not try to fix the system.

The OP asked about clearing Firefox of add-ons, not using another browser. While I agree it's easy enough to install and use an additional browser, it doesn't address the original question. And please, let's not argue in this thread and confuse the OP any further.Agreed....the other aspect of this is not all FireFox addons are authoured by FireFox and indeed dramatically affect browser performance...

A clean install would eliminate the issue.I agree that Chrome is better since I have tried to revive the old xp. On FF the games are laggy, not other apps. I have reinstalled FF a few times but not a clean install. I will try that next. Thanks for all the help and suggestions. It ain't FFox...Thanks everyone for the helpful info. Much appreciated. I uninstalled FF and did a deep scan/install to get everything off machine so that none of it will install when I do the Clean install.
Before I reinstall I want to get info on the best OS to install on this old machine that is still very good. I am weary of dealing XP.Probably would need info on the system before recommending an OS...
It may be time to cut your losses however...A bad trojan was found in my Firefox Browser so I deleted the total FF from machine. That is probably why it was working so badly.

Solve : Sound is choppy on my XP SP3. Do I need newer Codecs??

Answer»

I read through Dell Diagnostics and it recommended that I: see below

Reinstall Sound, Video and GAME Controller Drivers

Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
Double-click System and then click the Device MANAGER tab.
Click the plus (+) sign next to Sound, Video and Game Controllers.
Click each entry one at a time and then click Remove, repeating the steps until the Sound, Video and Game Controllers category is removed.
Close all open windows.
Reboot the computer.
The sound card will be detected and you will be prompted to reinstall its drivers.

I have no remove button and in Actions there is no remove. All I have found is UNINSTALL in properties and uninstall drivers. Is that what I should do? I got a popup this morning that my SoundMax INTEGRATED Digital Audio needed driver update. alsoEverything I have tried has only increased the choppy sound. It occurs only on Plug and Play Flash programs.
Please disregard the above post. It is not a Plug and Play device/program that is the problem. The issue is you continue to use Windows XP. Adobe and others limit support for Windows XP. You need to move up to Windows 7 or 10.It is a Pentium 4 system; performance issues with modern software are to be expected, and there is no magic wand to be waved to make the issues go away. Thanks Geek and BC_Programmer
I removed most of the programs running in the background and will see if that helped also I unticked the 'use hardware acceleration' on the browsers. Then got sidetracked hunting for a fix for perser error 0x80070003. I am ready to give it up on this old girl. She is running faster since I installed Avira and scanned with Reimage. Am taking my Mac tomorrow and hope it is fixable.Quote from: Geek-9pm on September 07, 2016, 02:53:54 PM

Solve : NEED HELP trying to clear hard drive and reinstall Windows XP?

Answer»

I have an OLD HP Pavillion desktop that was using Windows XP Media CENTER Edition 2002, Service Pack 2. We just invested in a new imac, so now that computer is not needed for everyday family use. I would like to erase the hard drive, then reinstall Windows XP so that my son can have the computer for basic websurfing and some small PROGRAMS. The system has been so "damaged" by VIRUSES and malware that I think this is my only option.

Here's the challenge...HP acknowledges that Windows XP was preinstalled, and that they did not include a recovery disk with the computer when I bought it. However, since Windows XP is an outdated system, they no longer have any recovery disks to ship to me. I assume this means I would have to buy XP again, which would be very frustrating.

Any ideas on how to get around this problem? If my only choice is to buy Windows XP, would it even be worth it to go through this process? Will the system operate like it did when first purchased if I delete the hard drive of everything and reinstall XP? I don't want to WASTE my time or spend the money if the system won't be better than it currently is.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. You can borrow an xp media center cd to install. As long as you have your license key sticker on the machine this is perfectly legal.

What Toshiba Laptop/Model are you using? Have you check for any BIOS settings, booting? Is the error you mention different from the lost or corrupt file? yes the error is differnt my laptop number is
TOSHIBA SATELLITE A100/PRO A100 SERIES
MODLE NUMBER PSAA9A-OCUOO4Many post/threads point to a bad HD pertaining to the error CODE and since toshiba has no diagnostic tool for their storage devices for any integrity test, it is now only a choice of replacing the HD and hopefully able to back-up certain files by hooking it up to another working computer. Others may give better solutions, but for now its all I can suggest.

Solve : Req Windows XP SP3 Download Link in ISO?

Answer»

I want to reinstall Windows XP on my PC. Though it sounds odd but it's a fact I am still using Windows XP on home based PC. From few days i felt performance slow down and I thought I should make fresh installation of windows XP. Where do i download Windows in ISO file. Should I go with Torrents or can some one share me the way to get ORIGINAL windows filesThread locked. You need to BUY an actual copy of Windows XP for Home or Professional. Then create a slipstream for SP3 if you want a XP SP3 disc. Its illegal to download Windows XP ISO's from torrents, however another option is if you have a GENUINE key you COULD ALWAYS borrow a friends OEM disc of the proper version of XP to perform installation and use YOUR KEY NOT THEIRS if you don't want to buy a disc.

My Lenovo 3000 j series crashed and when I turn it on, it says "The following file is missing or corrupt: \ WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM. However I don't have a password on my user account in windows, or on my administrator account. I don't have a Bios password either so what password do they expect me to put in? Do they have a generic password i don't know of, how can i get into the recovery console without this password they speak of? and i've tried not putting a password in at all, ive tried using the most generic password of all TIME: "password". And yet nothing. How can i fix this? If its any help i have a windows Xp INSTALL DISC, but i have to have all my files and photos still their and not all of them are backed up. And i tried the repair option but its too hard to deal with. Thanks for the Help!Try hitting Enter when prompted for a password...Boot to the XP CD and select R (Recovery Console)

At the command prompt type:

ren c:\windows\system32\config\system system.old
copy c:\windows\repair\system c:\windows\system32\config

RebootI put the XP install cd in and chose the repair option it brought me to that command console and I typed: ren c:\windows\system32\config\system system.old I hit enter and it replied by saying "access is denied."
so I tried copy c:\windows\repair\system c:\windows\system32\config and still "access is denied" so I tried both at once and it says "the command is not reconized." so I don't know what to do know, any help would be greatly appreciated! thanks!

Solve : Unsuccessful Virus Erradication?

Answer»

A couple of times recently after a shut down, a mem test activated automatically and did not report anything unusual.
Have learned that I can get a tester for the power supply. Guess I should do that, since you say that the power supply could be the problem.
The only thing my friend got with her computer was "Drivers and User Documentation" for her color monitor and other software that came with her computer. She was so clueless that she didn't make a "restore" disc. Could I use any restore disc for XP?

...
It still boots, but I only get a black screen with these two choices:
"Delete restoration data and proceed to system boot menu" or
"Continue with system restart"
If "system restart" is chosen, the blue screen comes up immediately with the KERNAL_STACK_PAGE error that I shot with my camera previously.
We haven't tried the "delete restoration data" option.
It's a 2.8 Ghz desktop w/ 512 RAM and an 128 ATI Hypermemory card that had an 80 GIG drive in it, (which is now toasted, I assume.)

Any suggestions?
Is it possible it's not being Shut Down, but going to Standby or Hibernate? The message you are getting would indicate it is. Select "delete restoration data".

No. that was a chkdsk. Different. Thanks for the info about "Delete Restoration Data." It had been on stand-by when it had locked up, so it makes sense that this routine needed to be purged. I was merely gun-shy to delete anything.

OK, since the conclusion was that it wasn't a hardware problem, (and fortunately she managed to do a backup) did a system reset as was suggested earlier. I would have done it before, but it took more info to figure out that it was control F11 to activate the partition with the restore stuff. ...so far, a qualified success.

Had the blue screen go off only once after the reset...asked someone else what the numbers at the bottom meant: STOP: 0x000000F4 (0x00000003, 0x81756CK0, 0x81756E44, 0x80604498) and they said it wasn't a hardware problem again.
So KEPT going. Deleted lots of junk programs that often comes on new computers, including a McCafee offer that had expired.

The original restore was so old that the update page at the microsoft update site didn't work.
So I installed the installation interface when Microsoft Sec. Essentials required it, two of them - after a little poking around, got the right files for the XP OS for the update.
Updated the java, let it sit for a few hours - no blue SCREENING!
So downloaded and installed a few programs, waiting in between for anything untoward to happen...
Then I installed the printer, etc. No blue screening!
...So, we'll see how it works out over the next day... Standby is not needed for a desktop, intended for laptop to SAVE battery power. I THINK it's fixed now.

I decided i should reinstall windows because of a virus or some error that could easily have been removed by formating/

Solve : Scanner and Camera wizard problem?

Answer»

Please feel free to correct me if I’m wrong and it has been a long time since I used X.P. or camera software.

When you plug in a camera and go to my computer the camera will be shown as any other msd or pen drive, you can click on it and view the content but nothing is imported on to the computer unless you physically highlight and drag and drop.

I think our friend at some point must have had software installed which may have done the importing AUTOMATICALLY as soon as it detected the camera, without that software he must import it manually as described above.

If these files are movie files he can view them with this http://www.videolan.org/ it’s free and will play almost any format including stills but cannot edit.
From what he has said the computer has detected the camera the problem seems to be that he does not know how to manually import the files.

I must agree with BC the really heavyweight editing software is DESIGNED for the professionals and for most of US the small free editing software is a much better option.
Hello aussie11

Thanks for your post.

Usually when I download still Windows pops up asking me if I wish to transfer the files using Windows. I created a folder and say yes.

In this particular case, an icon for Windows Media Player came on screen which I didn't understand. That's been resolced now, because I had, mistakenly, put the camera setting on 'Movie'.

The reason I mentioned Photoshop as opposed to other good applications, such as Paint Shop (gimp is ALSO ok for certain things), is that that is what is installed on my work PC. I don't take the PHOTOS - I am just asked sometimes to make them more presentable. Certainly, other programmes can do that, but the powers that be would then need an extra licence.

For really professional work, however, such as that used for airbrushing models in magazines, and on billboards, probably none can rival Photoshop.

Happy 2011

Solve : questions about replacing windows xp with a newer os?

Answer»

I didnt know where else to put this thread, because it involves windows xp, and windows 7, and drivers.

Computer is a hp pavilion ze4325us. It came originally with windows XP. I had some viruses on it, and DECIDED to do a reinstall. Now I wanted to put windows 7 as the new operating SYSTEM, given that I had put 1GB ram in this. Windows 7 started LOADING, but the display was all blotchy and not FULL screen either. Anyways, windows 7 installed completely, and loaded almost al the drivers automatically. The only two drivers it couldnt load were multimedia controller and graphic controller. Usually after the os is loaded and there are missing drivers, I uninstall those devices which have the yellow MARKS and then scan for hardware changes from within device manager, but for some reason this didnt work.

Anyways, next I decided to load windows xp again, but the installation continued until 8 minutes were left in the process, and then I got a BSOD, that said

IRQ_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

So question is why was the windows 7 installation able to complete successfully whereas the windows XP install could not?

If I do decide to use windows 7 as my os, where can i get the missing drivers?

What decides whether a computer can work with one OS and not another? This is pretty old laptop and as I can see here: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&lang=en&docname=c00001894&product=308113&, there are no drivers for Windows 7.
Besides, the processor is rather slow and 1GB of RAM (max) is not enough to run Win 7 properly.

Solve : Can I delete these files in Windows??

Answer»

WinXP, SP3, I.E.8

My FIRST visit, found a very useful post about deleting old un-install files for updates, to get back some disc space. Also found the FOLLOWING folders in Windows that look SIMILAR, that would release a huge amount of space - can I delete these safely?

$NtServicePackUninstall$
$NtServicePackUninstallIDNMitigationAPIs$
$NtServicePackUninstallNLSDownlevelMapping$
IE7 - (20.1 MB)No. The is a reason for their presence.

You can save more space by REMOVING those duplicate or left over let over JPG photos you don't want anymore. And AVI files. And MP3 files.Yes you can. Just make sure you are happy with the service pack upgrade and then you can delete the uninstallation files.

Solve : 100+ Registry Data KEYS disabled by the “ -k “ switch BUG - Read the list!?

Answer»
100+ Registry Data KEYS that have been disabled by the “ -k “ switch BUG - Read the list and the descriptions - Maybe this has affected your computer too!

The main culprit with the extender “ -k ” attached to it is “netsvcs” but they are all associated with the DATA String with the “svchost.exe”
Here are more names that show up with the “ -k “ switch attached to it that are disabling some of the other Reg KEYS.

-k NetworkService

-k dot3svc

-k eapsvcs

-k HTTPFilter

-k LocalService

-k nosGetPlusHelper

-k imgsvc

-k WudfServiceGroup
=================

What is svchost.exe?

General Info:
File Name = Svchost.exe
Process Name = Microsoft Service Host Process
File Location = C:|Windows|System32

Svchost.exe is a system process which is included with Windows. The official process name is Microsoft Service Host Process. File sizes will differ from computer to computer but documented file sizes are 14,336 bytes (86% of all occurrence), 12,800 bytes and 22,016 bytes. Svchost.exe should NOT be disabled or REMOVED because it's an essential file required by your computer's Windows Operating system. But Svchost.exe may be damaged and corrupt causing errors, high CPU usage and slow computer performance.

A couple of the main problems I am having with the computer is that I can not install updates properly and that my Cryptographic Services have been disabled although I know that it IS enabled and that it is set to automatic at boot up time.

I don’t know where the “-k netsvcs” came from but I’m going to go through the entire Registry again and take them all out. They don’t belong there as far as I can tell. I mean, you can clearly see the Reg KEYS that this BUG is disabling.

The address line in the “C:\Windows\System32\ Directory” looks like this:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe

NOT like this:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs

There is NO listing of the svchost.exe file in the
C:\Windows\System\
Directory at all.

The only other place on the computer that “svchost.exe” exists is:
C:\WINDOWS\$NtServicePackUninstall$\svchost.exe
C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386\svchost.exe
C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v3.0\Windows Communication Foundation\SMSvcHost.exe
C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v3.0\Windows Communication Foundation\SMSvcHost.exe.config
No where in any of these files does it have the extender of “ -k ”

So, if no one has any objection, I’m going to delete the extension “ -k netsvcs” (and all of it’s “ -k ” buddies) in all the Registry files where found.
If anyone knows of a reason why I should not delete these file extensions, Please let me know and why I should not delete them.

I’m going to list all the locations of the infraction that I found in MY “Registry Data File” so that if someone else is having a similar problem of the same area, they will know Where to look for it and why that particular function is NOT functioning properly and can then know how to fix it. I’ll first Back-up my system and the Registry files before effecting repairs and report back here as to the outcome.

I WOULD STRONGLY ADVISE ALL NOT TO FOLLOW IN MY FOORSTEPS AT THIS TIME.

When I used to repair colour TVs back in the 1970s and 80s, I made a call to a guy who said that "The picture was fuzzy so I took the back off the set and had a look. I found a lot of little screws that were loose so I tightened them all up." He meant the adjustable cores of all of the IF transformers, and a number of trimmers in the UHF tuner as well. He had effectively turned his TV into scrap, given the cost of putting it all right.

on the computer side, my brother scrapped my 486 when I was away for a few months some time ago. he decided that since it wasn't working right it must be something inside it, and then he found all these loose power connectors...

He managed to find a place for all of them. stuck some of the free FRONT panel power LED connectors to some of the jumpers on the video card, managed to jam the molexed any which way too. A feat of engineering. You would imagine it would be obvious that it the molexes are not supposed to go into those, but as the quote goes, sometimes when faced with an unfamiliar problem people forget everything experience has TAUGHT them, because they incorrectly deem it irrelevant.

Solve : 8 years old windows XP computer. Should I repair, or just buy a new computer??

Answer»

My computer is a trooper for lasting this long, anyway,

So I was browsing peacefully last night when suddenly Avg antivirus poped up and said that I have multiple trojans. I tryed to delete them all but for some reason, Avg wouldn't delete them, So I restarted the computer, hoping the problem would go away, but when I came back, the BSOD popped up and the STOP:c000021a fatal error showed up. Ever since, I could not log into my computer as I still get the blue screen of death everytime I try.
Not even safe mode, debugging mode or last good configuration works And I really don't feel like buying a new hard drive. I use Windows XP 2003 home edition. I don't have the installation disk, so I can't reinstall XP. Should I attempt to repair it, or just get a new computer? I don't really have any valuable FILES on there.IMHO.
Buy a refurbished model of the same series or class you had. But not as old. It will have Windows XP with COA.
Later, when you have NOTHING to do, try to fix up the old laptop. As a hobby. Thanks, I will indeed fix up my old computer in my spare time. I am sorta leaning towards getting a macbook though, because my experience with windows lately hasn't been so good.Quote from: Fuzzypickles on January 01, 2011, 02:58:42 PM

I understand how you feel. Wish I was still a millionaire and could afford a MacBook and a new car. Macbookl first, then the car.
Apple - MacBook - The $999 notebookI have the same problem. Don't know which way to go : new or REPAIRED one? My current financial situation is not so good so I thinking of repairing it, even though the thought of a new computer seems so appealing! Welcome to CH.
Actually, this is somebody's thread. You should start your own.
Why not find some refurbished PCs out there in your region? And come back here and start a new thread.

If you like Windows XP, Microsoft has authorized baby third parties to refurbish off-lease desktop PCs. These little companies get a truck load of old Dell or Compaq desktops, clean them up and reload them with a current copy of Windows XP SP3. And stick a label on it the says it is legal.

I have bought one, and I THIN k it was a good deal. You just add your own keyboard, mouse and monitor.

The FACT that you get a legal XP makes it worth $200.

Solve : Having a problem with computer hanging (or something)?

Answer»

I'm on my older laptop computer atm. The laptop computer I usually use is having a problem right now. I was updating an important document with Windows notepad while I also happened to have Mozilla FireFox open. Suddenly the computer got a problem again which I've encountered once before recently. I went to save my file and the computer wouldn't let me. It would say "(filename) already exists. do you want to replace it?" and when I select yes it waits a few seconds then says that it "cannot create the file" and to "make SURE the path and file name are correct". I'm unable to save the file no matter what I try and I'm really upset and don't want to lose everything I've typed. I've tried saving it as a different file name but get the same error. Mozilla FireFox crashed and I closed it out. I tried opening the task manager to stop any other thing from running which might be causing the problem but it won't open. I tried opening Windows WordPad to copy/paste my file there and save it but the computer will not open anything. It's not frozen but is hanging or something. I'm not sure what's wrong with it. The cursor continually has the little hourglass next to it. That computer is running Windows XP. I tried pressing the esc key but it has no effect no matter how many times I press it. I REALLY NEED to save that file. Can someone help me please?
thank you When did you last check the disk drive for errors?
try oppening the task manager and see what is using the majority of the computers workload in PROCESSES, It may be a process you can terminate, atleast long enough to save the file. Or you could try to email the file, then it would remain saved in your sent folder of your email acount!!
I'm unable to open the task manger - or any other program. The mouse pointer moves and I can open a folder but no file or program that I click on will open and the mouse pointer continually has the hourglass next to it (I guess from when I tried opening task manager a few times). Pressing the esc key seems to have no effect.

I left the computer long enough to use this one to type the initial post and when I went back to it, the screen looked as it normally does when the computer is left alone and then you have the type the password to get back in. When I moved the mouse pointer I got a sign-in box but instead of it looking like usual (selecting my name, another user's name or guest) it said the computer was "locked" and I had to type the administrator password to get back into the account I was using (which was the administrator account anyway).Quote from: Salmon Trout on January 02, 2011, 04:01:11 AM

When did you last check the disk drive for errors?
how do you do that? From a command PROMPT window type in chkdsk /r and hit Enter...
Let it run to completion. Are you trying to save this to a memory stick? I've had that error message when I have removed the stick and forgot to reinsert the memory unit.how do i get to the command prompt window? is that when you click on "start" button and then select "run"?Quote from: talontromper on January 02, 2011, 09:30:07 AM
Are you trying to save this to a memory stick? I've had that error message when I have removed the stick and forgot to reinsert the memory unit.

No, I wasn't. The file is in a folder that is on my desktop. I opened the (HTML) file with Windows notepad in order to add more text to the file. I typed several paragraphs, have it worded just the way I wanted, and don't want to lose my work. You are HALF way there. When you hit "run" you type in "cmd" into the run command and do what was said above. Could you email it to yourself?I want to try your suggestion to run a disk check but I'm locked out of that computer. I have it set so that if it is unattended for a few minutes you'd have to type the password to get back in. When I'd left the room to use this computer where it is in another room it did that and when I went back I was able to type my password and get back in. I tried again to save the file but it still wouldn't let me and popped up the error message. I was worried that if it went into screen SAVER mode again that I might not be able to get back to the desktop so I didn't click "ok" but left it like that, thinking that would prevent the computer going into screen saver mode while I was out of the room. When I went back into the room then I saw the computer had the wallpaper that I use for my desktop but nothing else was visible on the screen, no sign-in box or anything but the cursor and I can't get back to the normal desktop or get anything else to be viewable now and it's still like that. I can move the cursor but that's all. Is there anyway to get into "safe mode" or something and save the file that way?

Solve : Old Laptop Issue?

Answer»

Hello everyone, I'm not sure if I'm posting this in the right place. If I'm wrong, excuse me.

So, my friend gave me an old laptop and he wants to know what's the problem here? The same thing keeps going on forever.

Don't want to write all the stuff that's in the image so I'll just post it here. I hope you can see everything clearly. I think something's wrong with the charging CABLE (or however it's called) any ideas what to do to fix it?

It needs a new CMOS battery...Appears to be that its not DETECTING the hard drive and so its in a boot loop looking for PXE service that it doesnt DETECT. It could be as patio suggests a weak cmos battery making it act odd, but the hard drive should be detected. Can you get into the bios and check boot order and see if it detects the hard drive as well as is it keeping the date time correct or is it showing a wrong date/time?

Unless this laptop is going to be used as a thin client etc, PXE Network Boot should be the last on the list or even disabled in the boot order. Boot order is usually:

First Boot Device = CD/DVD ROM or Optical Drive
Second Boot Device = Hard Drive

If you use bootable USB media on occasion or a USB external CD or DVD drive that you need to boot from you would want it to have USB Media Booting ( USB Removable Devices ) as 2nd in the list with the Hard Drive 3rd on the list. Some BIOS's you need to even specify what type of USB device is connected vs USB Removable Media.

If no hard drive is shown by the BIOS then the hard drive is likely shot and you need a new one ( OR ) if you looking to get it up and RUNNING and willing to run Linux as the OS you can make a Linux bootable USB stick on a USB stick that is4GB in size or larger with 8GB or larger suggested so that you can have room to add programs and data without running out of space. I use Linux Mint on laptops that i get for free that dont have an OS and it runs perfectly well off the USB stick, however due to USB 2.0 speed and USB flash media being slow, booting and loading programs can take longer than if Linux was running from an internal Hard Drive. So I did everything like you said and took a few pictures. This is how it looked when I first opened Bios.

And then I changed the 1st boot device like you said.

I still get the same thing that's in my main post. The time and date is right too.

If you need I can drop other pictures of Main and Advanced. So what's the problem? I forgot to tell you that the laptop won't turn off without the charging cable.Quote

I forgot to tell you that the laptop won't turn off without the charging cable.

OFF?

So if you hold the power button in, it wont shut off unless its POWERED off of the power supply cable?

In BIOS when you look at the hard drive info it should say make/model of the drive detected. If it says NONE then the hard drive is shot. If it wont shut off unless power supply is connected to laptop then the main board could have a very very strange failure. Its usually that a laptop wont power ON without the charge cable connected. Any known history on this laptop from prior owner, like did it take a bath last it was used when it died somehow or a quick drop kick down a flight of steps?I meant ON sorry. My bad.Make?
Model?
Age?

Unless it is less that three years old OR was a premium laptop, it may not ber wroth fixing it.
Assume the motherboard and display are good. RAM OK.
Repair costs:
New Battery - $35
New AC Power - $25
New Hard Drive $20
3 hours of labor. $24
(At $8 per hour.)
Estimated: $ 104

Some decent used laptops on eBay go for $110 and less with OS.
Think it over...
Quote

Geek.... where are computer repairs only $8 an hour? McDonalds hires locally for $10 an hour. I'd be scared to have someone at $8 an hour working on my computer.

Just as a comparison, I charge $40 an hour and a local computer shop in my area charges $90 an hour.

Solve : "No signal" in Windows XP?

Answer»

There is a computer with Windows XP SP3.
In a "perfect" day, he began periodically to fail: the video signal is lost ("No signal" text on display), and the computer is more on what does not react (Num Lock / CAPS Lock, keyboard shortcuts, if any software has been started) but continues to "buzz". I can power off it only via power button. At first it was not so often, so that suffered, but now because of this it is impossible to work: the signal is lost, when user selection screena appears, or after the login, at the time of the appearance of the desktop. In safe mode, it works. Removed video CARD driver (Nvidia GeForce 6600 LE) - everything works, but the standard is also not very convenient to operate. Put different versions of the drivers from the manufacturer - the result is the same, the problem is not solved. The monitor (if it matters) Acer AL1717.
Replacing the video card is not possible. Built-in video card is missing.
Installed new Windows XP near old - same problem.
Cleaned compiter physically. Scanned PC with SFC - it's ok.
P.S. Sorry for my englishMost likely issue is Power Supply.
Did you day that it is normal or stable in safe mode?

Solve : Can not ZIP folder with odd chars. Windowqs XP?

Answer» I tried this in Windows XP.
I have a folder called 'BigBag' that has a lot of stuff I no longer use, but I do not WANT to throw away. I thought I could reduce the size a bit by MAKING it into a ZIP folder. Something went wrong. Very wrong. I made a quick screen shot before I stopped the process. (The process looked like it was stuck.)
Screenshot cropped and color reduced to save bandwidth.
Read the message in the box. I have never, ever seen this.

[attachment deleted by admin to conserve space]Is keeping the file within the structure of the rest of the data important or can you move it outside of the scope of the zipped folder and have an uncompressed folder named PartofBigBag then place this folder + zipped folder within a folder such as OldData then the zip process should be fine and you have most of your data compressed.

I havent run into this specific issue but did have once an issue with defrag puking on not wanting to defragment a hard drive with 15% free and large video game installation files that were acting like a defrag roadblock. My solution was to move the files that defrag puked on working around to a different drive, defragging the drive and then repopulating the drive with the files that defrag puked on with XP.

Apples to Oranges since your dealing with Zipping (compression) and I was dealing with Defragmentation, but SOMES it can be picky and creative work arounds are needed.

Getting back to zipping I have also run into path being too long to compress before as well, solution with that was to shorten the path to compress.
Yeah, something about long files names or lots of spaces in the NAME.
After some testing, I had to remove one file and one directory to do the job.
An issue is where other files link to the directory or file you need to rename.

Moral: Avoid long files names or spaces in file names if you can.

Right. After all the fuss, it did not save much drive space. I should just build a library on a 25 cent DVD disc.

Solve : problem with software after opening?

Answer»

Basic Setup
Windows XP SP2

When I COMMAND IE7 to run, It opens as normal, then can not load the website, or any website and stays blank white without saying "cannot display" or any other message, I am using a computer in the next room to access this website and everything works fine. The problem computer has a connected status from cable provider and displays the same ITP settings as the good computer. I have ran AVG 9 and Malware-bytes, neither found a problem although I suspect malware. also tried safe mode, and uninstall-reinstall, to no avail.
Anyone experiancing the same issue or have a clue how to correct a problem without identifining it first ?
ALSO, this problem seemed to have occured on its own about 3 weeks ago, at first it attempted to hinder the operation of several software programs and not allow them to open, now just ie7 has problem, seemed more of a computer platform problem that internet, so i posted here
What happens with other browsers (Firefox, Opera, SAFARI)?dont use them, its a computer in my police DEPARTMENT, everything about the PROGRAM runs fine as in the File, Home, Tools, and other buttons just dosent show or download web info, more or less checking to see if anyone has experianced this suspected malware issue
Ok fire fox is running fine, What now, Try the uninstall-reinstall again?Ok Allen, sorry about the reposting, uh somehow when I found that Firefox was installed and I chose to run it, Both Firefox and IE began working REGULARLY. Classic Windows for ya I guess. Thanks anyhow.

Solve : programs launch slow after reboot?

Answer» StartupLite

Download StartupLite by MalwareBytes to your Desktop.
Doubleclick StartupLite.exe to launch the program.
Ensure the Disable box is checked.
Click CONTINUE.
A pop up message will tell you the unecessary startup items in your list have been disabled and ask you to restart your computer.
Re-start your computer.
SuperDave, the only startup I had turned on was AvastUI.exe. The reason I say "had" is because I've got this issue posted on every help forum I could find, and cybertechhelp (same subject title, Malware Removal forum) suggested I uninstall Avast, then reboot. Wonder of wonders! This old pc acts like a new one now, but with NO A/V (scares me). So now I'm looking for a different A/V. Tried Avira, but it took FOREVER for the pc to reboot and was as SLOW, if not slower, than when Avast was installedWindows Defender...effective...and Free. Thanks for the reply patio. I've been all over the web and can't find windows defender xp 32 bit that'll install. They all tell me that I can't install in this VERSION of Windows, even tho they're labeled the aforementioned version.Try MSE...older version...

Forgot it was XP...my bad.I use Avira on my XP with no problems except for them trying to get me to upgrade.I've tried Avast, Avira, Panda, and am now giving MSE a try. This old box doesn't like any of them. My PERSONAL XP has about the same specs as this one, except my processor isn't as fast as this one, and, like you, mine handles them all (one at a time, of course) with no problems. SEEMS like something else is "bothering" it, but I can't find out what it is.MSE will not work with XP.SuperDave, MSE is working on this XP machine, but it's still slow as molasses opening/navigating apps, browsers, etc.You were lucky. I couldn't even download it. I wouldn't trust it for XP because it's not getting any updates.Runs fine on my XP rig,,,and still getting updates...manual or scheduled.

Solve : Barcode Enterance?

Answer»

Is there an app that I can use that will allow me too scan a bar code too log in? I have a car made for id purposes an security for my
machine. I have a bar code making app an a crq cat that I am using cat nip with. If possible not too over ride the windows password
field as well. Catnip ? ?Its an app that was made for the use of CRQ Cat's since they were unable too use the software that came with it. Since it requires that
you have too activate it. Basically, it allows you to scan things such as UPC codes if you set it that way. Not really able too explain it
though The device is called a "CUE CAT". And YES, you can get them to read barcodes. First you have to remove the serial EEPROM that contains a Unique Identifier that it attempts to send back to DigitalConvergence (which is of course out of business, but still). Then you have to hack about with the hardware some more to essentially get around the proprietary "encryption" that the cuecat does to all barcode output, which is nothing more then a CHEAP obfuscation scheme (security/encryption should be left to people who know what they are doing, DigitalConvergence need not qualify). This involves cutting particular traces and adding a jumper line halfway across the circuit board. Good luck.

You make it sound so easy, BC. He is doing it the HARD way >< I found a way that doesnt require that, suppose you guys dont really mess with stuff in these kind of
fashions though.Quote from: Slade on January 02, 2011, 03:17:03 PM

He is doing it the hard way >< I found a way that doesnt require that,

There isn't a way. Unless you perform the decoding through SPECIAL software, or actually store the encoded text as the barcode.catnip was made too do that or so what I read about it Then obviously your reading skills are just as good as your writing skills.

http://www.azalea.com/cuecat/

CatNip is a decoder developed by Rich Goldstein to essentially 'jailbreak' the CueCat device, turning it into a barcode scanner.

Where does it say it LETS users log in to Windows?

Answer»

hi friend,

I want to shut down my PC at 11.00 PM DAILY ,how can i do this?OK this would be the only way I can think of doing this.

Right-click on your DESKTOP, now CHOOSE New, then choose Shortcut. The Windows Shortcut Wizard will appear. In the box that appears, in the "location of shortcut area" type in shutdown -s and then give the sortcut a name...

Now goto "Start", Control Panel, Performance and Maintenance,Scheduled Tasks,Add Scheduled Tasks then click Next and then Browse and select the shutdown Icon you made earlier. Select "Daily" change the start time to 11.00 and select every day then insert user details..

There are also any number of 3rd party utilities.

Solve : Right Click disabled in Desktop and explorer - Fix?

Answer»

Wasnt sure where to post this or if its already common knowledge or if i shouldnt post this at all, so if its not helpful please delete.

My mouse right click would not work on desktop or in explorer, worked in other programs though, quite annoying.
Anyway I found the fix with a registry hack

Go to Start--> RUN--> type REGEDIT and hit enter. Navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

If there is a line there called NoViewContextMenu then that is disabling the right mouse and you need to remove it. Apply and reboot

If you wish to disable the mouse Right click at an empty area on the right column and select New > DWORD Value. Use the name NoViewContextMenu. Double click the name and set the value DATA as 1. Adding the registry tweak above will disable mouse right click for ALL users. If you only want to disable for the current logged in user, you should add the registry tweak to HKEY_CURRENT_USER instead of HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.

I would be interested to KNOW how NoViewContextMenu got set in the first place on the machine you were using, if this is your own PC, etc. If this was a work or school machine, and that registry setting was applied by the system admin, then it should not be altered without permission. Also, we do not advise casual tinkering with the registry since an error could have serious effects. In fact, hacks that are intended to bypass security settings put in place by system admins are, I think, against forum POLICY. However a properly secured machine would not allow an ordinary user to use Regedit.

Since a number of Trojans are known to set that registry value, in the event that it suddenly altered or became set when it was not before, I would be inclined to thoroughly check my system for malware.

ST - Yes this is my PC
I have been RUNNING with no right click for months, recently my PC was grinding to a halt, I scanned for viruses, used malwarebites, removed applications from start up etc

I then found this site and got some help from guitar_man and we downloaded some software and new drivers and set about cleaning up some more. Well this sorted it out.
However inspired by this i searched online for a fix to the mouse problem and found this http://forums.techarena.in/networking-security/1166022.htm anyway the third post on there had the answer. I know I have seen this information before somewhere so it is possible I caused the problem myself in the first place.

I also understand one shouldnt really tinker with the registry but I dont think I have any spyware left in my system.

Anyway, it worked for me but as I said, if my post is innappropriate please delete it,I guess the right-click disabling registry entry could have been left over from a malware infection, in which case your post gives useful advice, I think.
