Solve : New system with old hard drive.?

Answer»

Greetings!

I recently had to rebuild an emachines T2042 system for a friend because the power supply died and took the motherboard with it. My friend WOULD like to keep the original contents of the hard drive, but I am unable to boot from the HD. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

RobWhat sort of ERROR message(s) do you GET?

Are you able to access the BIOS of the computer, and if so, see the drive there?

Is the master/slave jumper on the drive properly set?The jumper is properly set, and I am able to see the drive in the BIOS, although the BIOS shows it as a Maxtor, but the startup screen shows "IDE Hard Disk". Startup will get to the point where it asks if I want to start in safe mode, normal, etc. Regardless of which option I choose, the blue screen of death will appear for not even one second, and the system reboots.

I should have mentioned earlier that the motherboard and processor are completely new. Both were damaged when the power supply died, so they were replaced.Unplug power to the hard drive, and boot.  The system should go through POST and attempt to start an operating system.  It will tell you, of course, that it can't boot, but I wonder if you get to that point WITHOUT a fatal error / blue screen?

You may need to install motherboard / systemboard drivers for the new board which was installed.  It may be that Windows is not properly "seeing" the motherboard since the new one was installed. Quote

the power supply died and took the motherboard with it

Are you sure it didn't take the HDD?
This happened to me and the whole lot went poof!!Slave Drive Tutorial

NOTE: The HDD does NOT need to be bootable for you to retrieve the data...

Good Luck.Alright. So I have a few things I'm going to try. In the meantime, I would like to thank everyone who took the time to reply. Your efforts are greatly appreciated!!!

RobI installed a fresh copy of Windows XP on a spare HDD. Afterwards, I turned off the PC and installed the original HDD in the slave position. All of the data on the original HDD is intact. How do I make the original HDD bootable?Format it and do a clean install of XP...What I am asking is: Is there a way to make the HDD bootable without formatting it? The owner would like to keep the HDD as it was before the PC crashed. Boot disk MAYBE?Get another emachines T2042  to put it in. I'm afraid that will be the only way. The hardware has to be pretty much identical.

You can access Power Management through the Control Panel.
You can't change your CPU SPEED by Code.  It's not a good idea to overclock your COMPUTER anyway.

Solve : Cant Access Share File?

Answer»

Thanks For opening this thread
The story is that there is Four computer Using XP OS Service Pack 2 in workgroup connected in Lan network.
and there is a folder in one of these four shared for all of them
tow other computer can connect to the share folder but  third of them cant
before he COULD Access to share folder but now it is not accessing to the share folder.
the computer that is not accessing to share folder can access to other tow computers
and the computer that contains the share folder also can access the error given computer.
i tried much but i couldnt solve this pro
Note: Dont forget that the computer which is giving the error can access to share folder if i enter as a administrator i mean that if i log on as a administrator on that pc that pc can access to share folder but the other user cant. the user also have administrative privileges.
the error given pc has the Mcafee anti virus but the other three dosent have.
i thought that the mcafee is creating problem but the amazing is that when i logged on as an administrator it accessed to share folder but as a user it couldnt
i dont know ther user also have administrative privileges
Waiting for the solution.Update them to SP3, and any other Critical Updates that are on Windows/Microsoft Update.

Try that first, there are some important fixes in SP3, one MIGHT be for that.

It probably WON'T be the solution, but at least we'll know for certain, and it's ALWAYS better to be fully updated anyway.
It's just a GOOD place to start.i have updated them to SP3  but the problem is the same
can u send some troubleshoots about this PROBLEM

I sure can, it just helps that you are now updated as well.

Go into the computer that is hosting the share, and take a LOOK at it's privelages, if you want limited accounts to access the share you must declare that.

Solve : Recovery freezes everytime after reboot?

Answer»

I have been working on a friend’s laptop a Toshiba Satellite M45-S355, after deciding to reinstall the OS fresh.  I purchased a Recovery CD for the M40/45 laptop and proceeded to start fresh with a brand new OPERATING system, but every time after the install of the recovery CD.  After the restart the splash screen appears, and then the cursor appears for a very short second and then disappears to a blank screen.  If I try restart the computer it goes to windows did not load properly screen, which freezes when selecting run windows normally, and ALSO freezes on MUP.SYS in safe modes.  I have searched the web looking for answers but none have solved my problem.

I have tried HOLDING the “0” button
I have tried holding the “C’ button
I have tried to use another windows XP disk to fix the boot and also the master boot record.

Out of curiosity I tried my dell XP Pro disk and it works just fine.  So that just confuses me even more as to why one WinXp OS will work over another WinXP OS.  I wish to use the original Toshiba Recovery WinXp so that the COA code will work.

Any help, suggestions, or ideas are greatly appreciated and welcomed

Thanks in advance,
Matt MUP.SYS is rather nasty problem.
Nasty, because there is not sure solution to it.
The best, I can do for you, are two links:
http://www.aitechsolutions.net/mup-sys-resolved.html
inside, there another sub-link to:
http://www.aitechsolutions.net/winxpnoboot.html
Why does my dell WinXP work over my friends factory Toshiba Recovery disk with WinXP?It could any NUMBER of reasons, the ones that come to mind immediately are...

1. Existing hardware including the motherboard may have failed in a specific way but not catastrophically.
2. New hardware has been installed but it is faulty or failing.
3. New hardware has been installed but not did not completely "Register or re-Register" correctly.

It's possible that a piece of hardware has been changed in a repair shop and something similar but not identical was put in and the Dell disk is generic enough to work with it.  The Toshiba disks are very specific usually.

Solve : xp 64 will not boot up?

Answer»

OK I've had a problem with xp64 that would not boot up. FINALLY fixed this piece of crap. To whom it may CONCERN had to go in and pull out the small {watch ) battery inside PC tower. Not real sure what the reason is but seems to have SOLVED my problems.!!!! Glad to hear that your problem is solved, the watch battery by the way is called a CMOS battery.  It helps your computer remember what it is while it is turned off.

You should have posted this in the original thread.

Solve : Should I update to Service Pack 3??

Answer»

Hello I was wondering If I should Update to Service pack 3 because I heard its extremely important.
Well my Question is I've had a Mfc71.dll error on startup for quite some time now and I've done EVERYTHING told to fix it. Which was to update .NET framework.

I think its FIXED for the most PART but now I have a few other QUESTIONS
I use TuneUp Styler which is a Theme Manager and I was wondering If this could effect my update of service pack 3 in anyway.

Definately get SP3, there are some important updates in it, and it also addresses some security issues.

The theme manager shouldn't affect it all.

Solve : Problems reformatting?

Answer»

Just INSTALL it to the large PARTITION.  There are many partition managers out there, but I prefer Partition Magic.
Just don't repartition it all when Windows is INSTALLED.  Delete the small partition and then resize the main partition to include that space.Use a THIRD party wiping solution and fix it. Quote

Use a third party wiping solution and fix it.

Yes, a LINUX boot disk should certainly do it.

Solve : Is it software? or hardware? or infection? or....??

Answer»

I've got a Vaio w/ MCE that has pretty much taken a dump for several reasons, just not sure how to prioritize fixing the problems. Here is a summary:

1. C:\ had less than 300MB free space; I've managed to get that up to almost 900MB but know I need more room for OS to load/run properly
2. machine is now going to BSOD (PAGE_FAULT_IN_NON-PAGED_AREA) every time I do a Normal startup and try to log in; does physical memory dump
3. machine will start in Safe Mode and let me log in, but I can't get to Add/Remove Programs to pull out more apps to try and free up more room.
4. was also getting other BSOD message about a problem with ntfs.sys; does physical memory dump

What can I do in Safe Mode to try and salvage this thing? What info can I provide to help determine the prioritization of the troubleshooting? Appreciate your thoughts....What Operating System do you have?Windows Media Centre Edition.....MCE.

While in Safe Mode...

1. Navigate to: C:\Windows\Minidump folder.
If you see any .dmp files, zip all of them, and attach zipped file to your next reply.
Vista users You may need to copy .dmp files, paste them into some other folder, or desktop, and zip them there.

2. Download HijackThis (use Safe Mode with Networking, or download it on another computer):

Almost forgot, the original HDD (C:\) is 15GB(!). I had added a 175GB and basically tried to load everything on there, leaving the root for the OS and all the stuff that just doesn't run right if it isn't on the root drive. Looks like the laws of "bloated MS code" may have finally caught up with me...

Solve : Blue Screen (IRQL_NOT_LESS_EQUAL)?

Answer»

Hi guys, I'm having this problem while booting my PC. I did read other topics PERTAINING to mine but my situation is somewhat different, as I know what's causing my "Blue Screen of Death."

I have a Toshiba Tecra Laptop (Very old), and it turns out I get the "Blue Screen" everytime I turn on my Wireless Connection switch. The very second I turn it on, the "Blue Screen" pops up.

I know whats causing it, but don't know how to fix it. I can boot up and enter safe mode with the Wireless Switch turned ***OFF***.

Seeing other topics on this forum, I understand I'll have to upload my .DMP FILES. So I'll put those up. Thanks, hope you guys can help. I'm a "decent" guru with PCs but a step by step explanation would be APPRECIATED.

[attachment deleted by admin]I had some problems with opening attached file. It had zip extension, but in reality, it was rar file.

All errors come from w22n51.sys, which is Intel Wireless driver.
Try to reinstall it.
aah, yeah sorry, was an honest mistake. I actually rar'd it on accident.

Anyhow, Broni you are the MAN!!! So FAR so good, updated my Intel Wireless Driver, and its been working great so far.

Thank you so much! Great forum, this issue is RESOLVED. ~With High hopes Cool

Solve : what is the function of control w?

when I'm NAVIGATING on Internet Explorer.... I suddenly PRESS the instead of pressing control n for a new window: my problem is when I'm pressing the control w my previous window was suddenly gone... sir\mam i want to know why it is happen...thanks a lot :There are many control keys.....

http://www.hassanzadeh.netfirms.com/Teaching.htmNot exactly sure what the problem is. Perhaps I'm misunderstanding the issue.

Control-W is supposed to close the active window, which is what you're experiencing.

Control-N, for most programs that use the combination, creates a new something... new browser window, new blank document, ETC. just depending on the program you're using.

Based on your description, it seems EVERYTHING is WORKING as it should. (?)

Solve : Please help - Corrupt Registry?

Answer»

Upon powering on my PC, a blue screen showing this common error is displayed:
STOP: c0000218 {registry file failure} The registry cannot load the hive (file):\systemroot\system32\config\software or its log or alternate. It is corrupt, absent, or not writeable.

Beginning dump of physical memory. Physical memory dump complete. Contact your system ADMINISTRATOR or technical support group for further assistance.

Now, I know how to recover a system with this error to working condition. The problem lies within the FACT that my computer does not recognize either of my CD drives, which  prevents booting to the WINDOWS reinstallation CD. I have had a similar problem with a registry value hiding the CD drives in the past, however, now I am unable to even start Windows because of the corrupt registry error.

So, since I cannot boot to the Windows XP CD and I have a corrupted registry, what can I do to get my computer to recognize the CD drives? Or if there is another way to access the recovery console, PLEASE let me know.

Thank you.Can you see your CD drives in CMOS?   Do they show up?

If they show up, what boot order do you have them set up as?  If you want to boot from one of the CD drives, the Cd drive that you want to boot from has to be a the top of the list of drives in the boot order.

For example:

diskette (floppy drive)
cd rom
hard drive
USB

In this example, the computer is set to first look to the floppy disk for a bootable information or OPERATING System, if no Operating System if found, it will look on the CD drive for an Operating System, If no Operating System if found on the Cd rom, it looks for it on the hard drive......In your case I think the hard drive is set to boot before the CD rom, there is an operating system there so the computer boots from it, but it does not load because the registry is corrupted...

Set your boot order to look something like this:

diskette (floppy drive)
CD drive
Hard Drive

to  get to CMOS, restart your computer and press, F1, or F2 when the first screen appears..Be sure to save your settings, before exiting CMOSRegistry issue shouldn't prevent you from booting from the CD.
At that moment, it's all up to BIOS, and the registry is not even loaded, yet.
Did you check boot order in BIOS?

Solve : Help! Unable to open any anti-virus software or programs...?

Answer»

For over a week now I have been unable to open any programs (says the files are too big) or any anti-virus software. I have Macafee Security installed but cannot open and cannot run Malwarebytes program to SCAN for what the virus is. EVEN in safe MODE the programs will not open...I have read several threads that suggest running a program CALLED Combo-Fix or HijackThis, but after downloading both, they won't open either...

When windows OPENS up I get an error message stating: "cannot find c:\WINDOWS\system32\msaoxmtw.exe"   It also says to remove it from my registry if not needed or something...Problem is I can't even run regedit to check my registry files because I get the same quick black box with a message referring to an "msgidixx.exe" file that also does not exist on my computer...

Any registry cleaner or spybot program I try to run will not work because they won't open...

Hope that wasn't too confusing but I have no clue what to check next and would appreciate any advice. Thanks/ I forgot to mention I am running Windows XP...This forum is for virus support, I'm going to recommend that you post this there.

Ok I have a 500gig external USB hard drive that worked fine after plugging it in.  However, if I reboot it will freeze when trying to start up.  If I unplug it it stays frozen.  But if I restart and unplug the usb then it will load and once it gets to the page that says windows I can replug it in and it will continue loading.  It is almost as if my computer is searching for the windows load on the USB harddrive instead of the harddrive on the computer where it is installed.  I have obviously found a way around my problem, but more of a pain in the but to have to GO through this ROUTINE everytime to just get my computer to restart.  Any help would be much appreciated.  Thank you.In the BIOS check and see which device is set to boot first.  Let US know.Sorry but how do I do that?At boot time you will see a message on screen "Press Delete  or some other key to Enter Setup...
Press that key next boot and you will be in the BIOS...

NOTE: Do not change anything you are unsure of....
NOTE #2 This all happens before you see the XP screen.

Question: What's on this external drive ? ?Ok hopefully this is what you are looking for

Quick Boot: Enabled
1st Boot device: CD/DVD-0
2nd Boot device: IDE-0
3rd Boot Device: Disabled.Yep...NICE job.

Question: What's on this external drive ? ?
Also is externally powered thru AC or just a USB connection ? ?Sorry I forgot to answer that question.  But whatever comes on it when I bought it.  I bought a WD IBOOK.  The only thing I personally have put on it is movies.  I have ripped a view to view later, but thats it.  And it is connected with a USB cord, but powered through AC.Did you install the iBook software ? ?
I hope not...
There are issues.

In the meantime try it on another USB port...preferably a rear one...Yes I did install the software.  Shows how much a newbie I am.  What are the probs?  Do you think that is possibly it?

Solve : Do I really need all the old versions of .NET Framework??

Answer»

From v1.1 to present, there are hundreds of MB of updates to the .NET Framework. Is it really necessary to have all of these older versions still on my PC or can they be removed/uninstalled?.NET Framework versions install independently, because different programs may need different NET veriosn.
In GENERAL, no NET has to be installed at all, until some program actually asks for it.So, do I just keep adding versions/patches/service packs ad infinitum (or is that ad nauseum)? At what point can I uninstall old versions? What is the risk of uninstalling say, 1.1, for instance, and just leaving everything 2.0 and newer? Quote

Did you try what blockHEAD suggested?  Double check to make sure that you have the ribbon connected properly if it is an EIDE drive.  Pin 1 goes CLOSEST to the Molex(power) connector. Quote from: usmc42000 on June 27, 2009, 01:47:52 PM

Have you ever blown it out with compressed air?  If not, it's probably time to give it a shot..
Make sure there is no dust built up in the heatsink of the PROCESSOR, especially.

Some bios come with anti-virus and that could CAUSE it to freeze when trying to install..... Just look around in CMOS and set it to "disable", if it exists..

Also, pull the jumper pin off the back of the EIDE drive and set it to Cable Select... On some installations it's recommended to use the Cable Select setting, if it is the only HDD on the system..

You might want to inspect the motherboard for bulging capacitors as well.  Look at the tops of all the capacitors on the motherboard...They should all be relatively flat.......and make sure there is nothing leaking out of the tops of them, either

case solved...If you have all of your data backed up then re-partition it.  It sounds like your partition table got smoked.Hi.., thanks for the reply..
Guess i was not understood properly...
Data only on ONE of the partition has been backed up and the data on two of the partitions (that are not even visible) have not been backed up! and there is no way for me to do so cuz of the huge amount...! Quote

and there is no way for me to do so cuz of the huge amount...!

If you go into Administrative Tools>Computer Management>Disk Management will it show you the two missing partitions?  If so they may be salvageable.  Your backup options are pretty limited at this point.

You could back up what you can see to an optical drive, or PURCHASE another hard disk to INSTALL your OS on and then try recovering the data from there.

NEVER RUN a backup to a partition on the same drive you are backing up, it's pointless.  You see why now.  ALWAYS back up to an alternate medium.

well., the two partitions are visible when i boot from the other HDD but not visible when booting from the same HDD itself......
thats wat concerns me...Then try to back them up using the other hard drive to access them, put them on optical media or yet another hard drive.

Once you have backups made repartition the drive. The data to be backed up is 100GB and the other HDD hardly has less than 8GB of free space i guess.... :-( optical drive backup would be the last option....
- Is there no way to make windows recognise the other partitions?
- How COME it is being detected when booting from the other HDD alone?Mods/Admin: The thread may be closed/removed as the issue was sorted out by installing service pack 2... thanks for the person who has been helping me...I'm glad to hear that you found the solution.  Come back any time.

Just remember to change your backup media.  Don't back up to your primary disk anymore please.

Solve : Can I use a single XP CD on different computers??

Can I use the same XP CD on different computers as long as I have valid keys for each computer? My Dell E1505 laptop doesn't have a RESTORE disk. I want to use my desktop's XP CD to do a clean install. The laptop has an XP home edition product KEY on the bottom.

The Dell recommendation is to use system restore. I want a clean install so I don't have all the Dell extra BS along with getting RID of all the all the other "stuff" (to be polite) that accumulates after three years of use.

Thanks.     Once both computers have XP Home and you have valid keys then yes you can use same CD.As luck of the irish says you will need valid keys for both computers.  This will entail purchasing a second license.I do have valid keys for each computer. That's what I needed to KNOW. OH okay, just making sure Thanks for the info. That's what I needed. No problem, come back anytime

Solve : Computer boots up but blank logon screen?

Answer»

I have a Dell Inspiron 9300 laptop.  I have McAfee antivirus software and it is updated regularly and I use Windows XP as my OS.  I had recently dl'ed the Service Pack 3 and needed to reboot my system for the update to take effect.  When I restarted my computer I lost power.  After recharging my battery, I tried to boot my computer and it fired up like normal.  Boot screen, windows XP screen, and then it went blank (Black screen W/ a cursor).  I can move the cursor around the screen but there is nothing to click on.  I tried rebooting and the same thing happened, I have tried restarting in safe mode and still the same thing happens, and I have entered the BIOS (F12 during start-up?) and ran some kind of computer diagnostic which it said EVERYTHING passed.  Tried rebooting again and still the same problem.  The computer seems to WORKING fine, but everytime I get to the place where windows would ask me to put in my password the screen is black except for  the cursor, or the safe mode message(when attempting to start in safe mode).  Any suggestions?  Thanks.I found this, but I don't think you can do anything if you cannot get into the computer.
http://keznews.com/4760_Black_Screen_of_Death_for_XP_SP3_and_Vista_SP1_Upgrades

Just to make sure, do you think that is the problem?I read the article and it doesn't fit.  I don't have any form of Onekey installed on my computer and my screen isn't dead(technically) because it works fine until it gets to the Windows password prompt.  Ex...I can press F12 while booting and see everything you would normally see, BIOS, system info, test diagnostics, etc.....Thanks though.  Any other suggestions? What can you do at the black screen?

CTRL + ALT + Delete work at all?

Any errors or beeps?Well, I can move my cursor around the black screen and that is about it.

CTRL, ALT, DEL doesn't do anything and it doesn't make any noises.  The only time the screen really does anything, is when I start it in safe mode.  Then it SAYS "Windows Safe Mode" across the top and bottom of the screen in a huge font.  It is almost like it is waiting for me to input my password but I can't see the password box to type it in.I think you should try a Repair Install:

We don't assist with torrents !

Even legal ones?

I didn't get the memo that MS was giving it's blessing to those that seeded their BETA of Win7 to torrents...
Perhaps i missed it.    http://keznews.com/37453=Microsoft_admits_Windows_7_torrents_were_inevitable
Microsoft executive Gary Schare, [...] acknowledged that the problem of online distribution was hard to escape.

"Certainly when we went into an event saying 'OK, you have to come to an event to get the bits', you kind of know that someone is going to find a way to put that out there," Schare told APC, though he declined to comment on any specific legal actions Microsoft might take against downloaders: "I can't speak to what our legal team or anyone else has done." Actually, on El-jazeira, Bill SAID, he's using uTorrent himself:

Nope- Bill was killed and replaced by the YFAIFAS,(Young Felines Attempting to Imitate Fat Opera Singers)

You see, the association wants to fatten themselves- so they need food, and thus they need money. So they brainwash bill gates by having hundreds upon hundred of cute kittens crawl in his bedroom window, and CREATE the windows logo on his floor. Bill, so touched by this strange behaviour from what he believes to be feral cats, then calls Animal control and tells them to step on it. The Cats, realizing their plan is not going as they planned, Ripped him to shreds, placing his body in the closet (where else?). The cats, realizing Animal control was on the way, quickly performed the old army ant Bivouac manuever and put on a suite and some glasses.

When animal control got there.

"Alright MR. Gates, we brought the grenade launcher, where are the cats."

the cats quickly realized that they had no vocal cords and could not speak, and they couldn't meow the answer because it would seem unprofessional. So the cat forming the face did the only thing he could do. He coughed up a hairball.

Anyway to cut a long story short they had to lock the animal control officer in the closet and throw away the key. Which is amazing considering their lack of opposable thumbs; or digits, for that matter. The cats, whose association grew with the addition of two neighborhood kittens, Opal and Glit-Glit, continued their onward march.

Unfortunately, it was the middle of the night and they looked like bill gates, so it wasn't long before the cats noticed a group of MUGGERS (they hunt in packs) following them. The cat's quickened their pace but it was to no avail. the muggers caught up, and it was revealed that the muggers were in fact also Cats, from the OCAWYCAFALWCFOD (Old Cats Against Whatever the Young Cats Are For and Also Like Wet Cat Food as Opposed to Dry).

the old cats outnumbered the young cats three to one, but the young cats had a secret weapon. Quickly, they tossed out a yarn ball at the older cats.

Imagine the young cats horror when not only were the less playful older cats unphased by this, but half the young cats bolted out of the "costume" after the ball.

Their numbers thus dwindled, the young felines had no choice but to surrender. But before they could, spidercat came from the shadows, and along with batcat, spat out hairballs and left. the Old cats, confused and FORGETTING what was going on, began meowing about the state of their eyesight and what they did as kittens. Taking advantage of thier confusion, the young cats bolted, leaving behind the empty shell of a bill gates costume. The old cats, half of which had recovered from their confusion, followed then at a lazy pace. Only to be met with their arch-rivals, the LPBWUB(Lizards painted to blend in With Unconventional Backgrounds) The cats, now thoroughly confused (as any readers will be) ran back the other way, and found their only disguise- the Bill gates shell discarded by those darned young felines, who by now had regrouped....

Anyway- it's a bit round-about, but eventually they state the quote provided by Al-jazeira, in their first moves at controlling the grain. :'(i try to activate it but it want help me  Wow, I forgot about my classic post. especially the excellent part near the end:

Solve : Too many copies of win Xp on drive?

My AMD had a problem and we tried to FIX it... A suggestion to reinstall Win Xp via Cd, offering the potential of a repair option while loading, was taken up and now I have three copies on the hard drive!!!

Collect your Drivers beforehand. Thanks Patio, I totally agree.

That was my decision after evilfantasy helped me with the virus problem that didnt go away.

Now .. lets look at this formatting thing then, first, Am I in the right area, are there any forum tips links or FAQ Database sheets for me to read? This will help relieve the work load for volunteers/helpers.

2, This backing up thing, (never done it before and the FEBE BACKUP you helped me with, sorry didnt fully UNDERSTAND it , tried it, backed up something but?) well anyway,... I have a couple of programs that cost me a lot of money, its a single use, eg licence program as far as I know, how can I copy/save /keep intact/ move somewhere else/etc..

3 will formatting the drive alter things like the location of saved files?

I have a headache (seriously, a real one) going to bed right now.
So THANK you for your help and assistance.

Solve : Windows CE?

Answer»

Hi,
I don't know whether this is correct section or not for my question.

I have a PC running in Windows CE EMBEDDED and now faulty, cannot even enter BIOS.
It running only from a CF card.

Is it possible from this CF card, I boot up my Dell laptop now in xp?
Anybody have EXPERIENCE before?

Thanks. No, those cheap Windows CE "PCs" almost always run on embedded CPUs such as ARM/MIPS chips, therefore the software will not be able to start up on any other sort of system. Even if it was a standard x86 CPU, the software will almost certainly not be set up to boot on a standard BIOS that would be found in a regular PC.

Unless you are just referring to recovering data off of the card, I can't think of any reason to want to run Windows CE on a laptop that can run a full VERSION of Windows. Windows CE is totally not designed to be USED as a general purpose OS.

Hide User Accounts on Windows 7 Logon
But not for Windows XP.
So, Can it be done in XP?
CURIOUS readers need to know. YES...Thank you Patio. Works exactly as I wanted it too.

I have two user accounts, one hidden. Neither has password.
When I power on it logs into the account that was not hidden.

Later, it I want the other account, I do a log off.
At the login just one account is visible. I hit ctrl+alt+del and get the alternative log in screen where I can type in the hidden account name. Then It GOES into the hidden account . Easy.

This lets me start my PC automatically in the morning before I get out of bed.

Solve : Dumb Registry Hack to get XP Updates.?

Answer»

This does NOT work
How to get new Windows XP updates for free until 2019 with a Registry hack
This same 'hack' has been repeated by many rags last year.
Sorry. It does not work today.

Quote

In fact, Microsoft is still continuing to develop updates, although not strictly for Windows XP. Rather, Microsoft is continuing to support Windows Embedded Industry for another five years until April 2019. Previously called Windows Embedded POSReady, this OS is a special version of Windows XP designed for use in industrial systems, such as cash registers and ATMs.
The beauty of the two systems being so interlinked is that updates designed for one system should work on the other. As discovered on BetaNews, tricking your home edition of XP into thinking its Windows Embedded POSReady means you get updates for the next five years.
The term 'POS' meas point of sale. That suggests Windows XP embedded into a cash register. Other automated machines ALSO use a form of embedded XP.

So, my question is: Will this work for me?

I don't really need it.
I as I also have Windrows 7 and Windows 10 on this old box.

I don't get any more updates and my XP and it is as safe as it was when updates were still being received.I enabled the POS hack on a laptop about 6 MONTHS after XP end of life, and I immediately got offered dozens of updates. I continued getting them for about another 3 months then they dried up. I presumed that Microsoft had worked out a way of telling which machines were genuine POS systems. As soon as Windows 10 Insider Previews became available I went for that and am very happy to consign XP to the dustbin of history.
Salmon Trout,
After awhile I understood how to manually enable the POS thing. The script given was no good, so I had to do it by hand. Attached a screen of what I saw today.
As can bee seen, it did give both POS updates and other stuff.

I wonder why mine gave up? No matter, all my PCs are now in the modern era.
Just curious. What registry key did you use?
Maybe they changed it is some way.
Or maybe all the POS things were old?
How can I tell if the recent updates are new items?

The widely known reg file that was everywhere on the web in MAY 2014

Code: [Select]Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\WPA\PosReady]

"Installed"=dword:00000001

And BTW ...it does work...
You must have typed something wrong Geek...It worked on my XP laptop for a time, but it seemed to stop, by which I mean that at intervals of one or two months, I would check for updates and would be told that none were available. From time to time it would say a new version of Microsoft Malware Removal Tool was available. I guess it COULD simply have been that there weren't any other updates. When the Windows 10 insider programs was clearly going to continue after July 29, I did a full install. i still have the Dell restore disk for XP SP3 if I ever want to go back, which I very much doubt will ever happen.
My XP rig runs 24/7...it gets updates albeit not as frequent...it has yet to be attacked and or infected in the last 4 years...

Just sayin...Quote
My XP rig runs 24/7...it gets updates albeit not as frequent...it has yet to be attacked and or infected in the last 4 years...

My Netbook with Intel Atom processor came with XP Home and I have it fully patched to last official MS patch for those who didnt do any update hack. No problems with any hacking or malware as well. But its probably also because I dont subject it to high risk computing by downloading and running or installing on it and just use whats already installed on it, and I test software in a sandbox in a virtual machine before rolling it out to real machines.

I created a XP Home and XP Pro SP3 slipstream that contains all the official updates so I can perform a clean XP Home SP3 or XP Pro SP3 install and no other updates really required unless you do this registry hack to get others etc.

All but 2 computers I have are on a newer version other than XP. Netbook with Intel Atom is a waste to spend $ to buy a new OS for, so it will REMAIN at XP. I tried to put Linux Mint 17.1 on it a month ago and found out that Linux doesnt see the Intel Atom CPU as a x86 or x64 CPU which was weird so the Kernel Crashed on boot. So its probably going to remain on XP.Quote from: patio on September 10, 2015, 12:41:28 PM

Solve : Strange Lag - Windows XP SP3 Home - Netbook Intel Atom 1.66Ghz 2GB RAM DDR2 667?

Answer»

While the Netbook is not that powerful to begin with there is an odd lag I'm trying to figure out.

Specs:

APU Intel Atom 1.66Ghz
RAM 2GB DDR2 667Mhz ( single Ram Stick )
Toshiba NB205 Netbook
160GB HDD 5400rpm

Lag happens at Youtube and Facebook when navigating at those sites. No videos playing etc. But when you scroll up and down is when the lag is seen.

CPU use shows 40%-50% so I know that the CPU is not struggling.
Integrated GPU of the APU shouldnt struggle with simple SCROLLING up and down of these 2 sites.
Internet connection is fast 25/5 and speed test shows from NIC 23/4.7 running speed test.

Scrolling up and down in Libra Office has no problems.

Only thing I can come up with is that both sites use flash etc. But if the system was struggling with flash then the CPU should show its busy and its not breaking a sweat yet.

Performance settings are also set the the max on Netbook. There is a Toshiba utility where you can set it to be an electron sipper, but its set to max performance and least battery life setting.

Memtest86 run just to run it, and its good. Ran Passmark benchmark and it just shows that its as powerful as a Pentium 4 2.53Ghz.... which isnt that powerful, but I have a lesser powerful Pentium 4 2.00Ghz that has no problem with scrolling up and down with facebook and youtube.

Reinstalled OS fresh and problem still same. No virus's as well. and Video Driver is latest available for the APU.
Simple answer.: Intel as made a bobo and not confessing.

Source: many users on various forums complain bout the real world performance of the Intel Atom. Benchmarks seem to be good, but in the real world people see a perceptible slow performance.

As you said, there does not seem to be heavy loading of the core. Yet the common feature in user complaints is the Intel Atom. It is a wimp.

My REASONING. Look at this quote.
Quote

Which is away of saying it is a wimp. If it was not slow, he would have said so.

This isn't accurate. if the CPU is not the bottleneck to begin with then it won't be showing full utilization.

Also, you don't mention a model number, but it might be relevant that since Flash is single-threaded, if the Atom is a dual core then the 40%-50% would likely be one of the cores being pegged at full utilization.Quote from: BC_Programmer on October 01, 2015, 03:52:24 PM

I'll vote for this. I have an older HP 8510W with a Core 2 Duo and despite being pretty smooth in most tasks with an SSD and 4GB of RAM, anything involving Flash just brings it to a grinding halt as one of the cores gets MAXED out. Here is the additional info... sorry about leaving it out.

Netbook = this one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834114665
APU = This one ( Single-Core with HT ) : http://ark.intel.com/products/41411/Intel-Atom-Processor-N280-512K-Cache-1_66-GHz-667-MHz-FSB

I was totally unaware that Flash was Single-Threaded... wow... it is what it is then. Thanks everyone!

I upgraded it to 2GB of DDR2 667Mhz when I was given a DEAD laptop that had 2 x 2GB DDR2 667Mhz RAM sticks in it that were good. Free upgrade to maximum memory ( single RAM slot ), but the difference between 1GB and 2GB RAM on this netbook was almost not noticeable.

YES, OP is you. Original Poster.
There are a number of ways to do diagnostics. The members here can OFFER you a set of steps to take to find a solution. But you can not just pick and choose what steps your think are relevant, unless you really do have more experience and BACKGROUND in networking.
Anyway, did replacing the router SOLVE the problems?
If so, I am glad you get it fixed.

Solve : PC Freezing?

Answer»

My PC freezes randomly and requires a hard boot. I thought that perhaps the PC needed cleaning so yesterday I cleaned it very well, (compressed air) even cleaned and changed thermal paste. CPU typically runs at approx. 50°C - 60°C. I didn't think that this was too hot but decided to clean the PC anyway.

Today the PC ran for 4-5 hrs. and no PROBLEM then it froze. After reboot it ran for approx. 10 mins. and then froze again. Rebooted and approx.10 min. once more. The next time I decided to see how long it would run if I PUT it under load. I played FLUX and Zuma until I got tired of playing and no problem. I'm probably online more than not, but it always freezes when I'm online?

So if the problem is not heat, could it be the PSU ?, or what else could cause this? Appreciate some input. overthehill

PC- Intel Pentium D 2.80 GHz - 3.0GB Ram - 32-bitIf this is the XP machine you mentioned the other day and it's the original HDD then it may just be old age...
You could run the HDD manuf. diagnostics on it to see....I agree with Patio to check HDD as for if there is an issue with HDD and paging it will cause issues. Additionally given the age of this system, I'd check the capacitors around the CPU as well as others on the motherboard and look for any that are leaking or swollen. I had a Pentium D 3Ghz that was like yours with stability issues and come to find out I had 3 capacitors near the CPU that had dry browning yellow electrolytic leaking out their tops. Voltages for PSU might be able to be verified in the BIOS depending on what board you have and BIOS features an OUTLET with dirty WALL power can cause issues. If a light is connected to same outlet and you notice dimming or flickering with a standard filament BASED lightbulb then you have dirty power. Quick fix would be to find an outlet that doesnt have power issues of voltage drops or add a battery backup to keep the voltage levels up during operation.Well it is the old PC and I ran the Seagate tests -- Smart Check -Short Drive Self Test- Short Generic - Long Generic, all Passed. I did not run the FIX test. PC ran for hours, no problem. I checked the motherboard and CPU for leaks. See none. No flickering of light from same socket.

Maybe I'm really reaching here but is there any possible chance that it could be the optical mouse that freezes?? Is that possible? Anyway I changed to another mouse. If I still have the problem my next move will be to change the HDD. I have Vista loaded on a newer drive that's in the PC but not presently connected.
Thks. overthehillIf the HDD passed all those tests no need to replace it...

Solve : My laptop is now unreadable?

Answer»

My laptop, a Toshiba Satellite M45-S2693 Model PSM42U-01Q006 which is running XP Pro/SP3, has started doing strange things. Somehow, while running ccleaner.exe (a disk clean up tool), I unalertly (and stupidly, I might add) deleted a bunch of my font FILES. The system then did a prescheduled disk compress and my problem was made permanent. Upon reboot, every screen displays images properly, but all fonts are displayed as tall empty rectangles. Some text, however is rendered as special characters, except for the MS-DOS window. This window displays and functions normally. As best as I can tell, other than the font ISSUE, the machine functions normally. I was able to reload (not reinstall) all of the deleted fonts through the MS-DOS window, without any noticeable effect on this problem. Considering the fact that I can't READ any prompts, and don't know where a link might take me, how do I solve this problem? I can't even produce a configuration list or print screen for you to view. It's like looking at a foreign language film without any subtitles.Four choices off the top of my head: you can either do a system restore to a date before the problem began, make sure the fonts you copied are now in the "fonts' folder (they do not need to be "installed"), run sfc /scannow or do a repair install. I am not 100% certain sfc /scannow will replace the missing fonts, but if they are part of the original system installation it should. How can I do a system restore when I can't read any of the prompts? Where can I do the sfc command from? The only window that is readable is the DOS window. Can I do it from there? I just tried it in the DOS window and got another window that's titled Windows File Protection, but I ca't read anything else. Lastly, how do I do a repair install? I put in the SP3 disk and did a reboot and absolutely nothing happened.

The replaced fonts are in the Windows\fonts directory.

Thanks for the suggestions.Reading my questions again, they sound kinda snarky. Believe me, they weren't meant that way. Just asking questions.http://support.microsoft.com/kb/304449Just read the link that you sent. One minor problem - I have never set a restore point. According to the link, I'm "SOL" - that's "out of luck" for the uninitiated.I offered four options. System restore was only one. Also, what happens in safe mode?Brought up the system in Safe Mode. All of the drivers loaded and the system restore window popped up. Since I could read it, I closed it. Went to the DOS window and entered SFC /scannow. Received the return message :
Windows file protection could not initiate a scan of protected system files.
The specific error code is 0x000006ba [The RPC server is unavailable.]

I'm back at the c:\> now.Are you in safe mode or at a command prompt? And sfc /scannow will only work if there is an XP CD in the drive.

Let's start again - what happens in safe mode?OK, I'm in safe mode, looking at a Windows style screen. Once again all of the prompts under the desktop icons are vertical boxes. What can I do now for ya?I'm back with ya. I booted in Safe Mode with a command prompt (perfectly normally even with no special character set). I put in the Windows XP Pro upgrade disk, as you mentioned last night, and ran the command sfc /scannow. I got the same error as I did yesterday (Windows file protection could not initiate a scan of protected system files).

I'm sure that I'm doing something INCORRECTLY, but I don't know what. Any help that you have left over from yesterday would be sincerely appreciated. Thanks.Let's just do a repair install. At this point it's the easiest option:

1) Make sure the cd drive is the first device in the boot order in your bios
2) Boot to the XP CD
3) Choose the SECOND repair option (here are detailed instructions: http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/topic/138-how-to-repair-windows-xp/)
4) Done properly, all apps and preferences will remain intact
5) After you get back into the OS you'll need to go to Windows Update and download and install all updatesSuper. One last question (I hope) - how do I make the CD the boot disk? I was under the impression that putting in an upgrade disk and booting the system would take it to the CD first. Is this incorrect?Never mind. I downloaded your link and am reading it now. It tells me what to do. Hopefully, I'll let you know later how it went. Thanks so much for your patience with me.No joy. I did the repair exactly as noted in the article that you linked me to, and got the same result. Unless you can pull a rabbit out of a hat, this machine is destined for doorstophood.

Solve : Programs are compatible with XP but installers don't do their job?

Well, I may have a problem like this one, but I never posted it 'cause I only play that game when I'm really bored. NFSMW 2012 won't launch on XP, still on compatibility mode. What to do?? BTW it's the original one.
Thanks for all the explination you gave me in the second last comment. But I know that people are thinking or didn't saw the thread. I don't consider them rude because they're not answering fast. I consider them rude because they really are. They act like a kid that PLAYED GTA San Andreas and now want to become just like CJ. Of course, they don't swear, but they use their power of Admins or Moderators to make you to be affraid of them. The only thing that they don't know is that not all the people are idiots and are affraid of Admins. If the Admin is rude it means that's not the best site for you, if you pay with the same price. If the Admin doesn't talk to much on the site it means that
-he doesn't have the time to take care of the site=>the site is going to die soonly
Or
-he is a good guy
Under this site is a lot of spent time. This site has a good admin. One last thing.
Did you try safe mode? Mable you did.
How about this, Create a brand new user. Log off and come in as the new use. Wait a bit for Windows XP settle down. Then try to install the program that does not work right.
It just might work. I don't know why.

Nfs Mw 2012 is from EA, which say that it is not "compatible" with XP. I have Windows 7, but I want to do an experiment so I'm documenting myself and getting ready for everything that can happen. I tried to run the game in compayibility mode with XP and it said This program doesn't support Windows XP. How to trick it to run?
BTW, the experiment is about installing Windows XP x64 getting SP2 official and doing the registry value changing to SP3. Then, here comes the fun part, I might not find drivers that last for a long time on XP, so I must install 7 or 8's drivers. It will take time because I have to install my antivirus and muuuuuuuch more, but it will be worth it, I hope. Why the need to run it under XP should be the question here...The experiment is about XP. I want to see how good can it perform on new, recent and ultra-new games.Quote

Yes, this is because it requires DirectX 10. None of the DX10 for Windows XP wrappers (which all convert calls to DX10 to DX9 and do not use any DX10 hardware features) are implemented well enough to run it.

Quote

Don't use compatibility modes. If you are trying to get it running on XP, you should be using XP. the compatibility mode options don't change the Operating System, they simply reintroduce undocumented behaviours that some applications made use of.

Quote
BTW, the experiment is about installing Windows XP x64 getting SP2 official and doing the registry value changing to SP3.

Windows XP x64 is effectively based off of Windows Server 2003 x64; it is not really considered "Windows XP" by most software. Changing the registry to make the system report that it has SP3 installed doesn't magically give the system all the capabilities, functions, and internal fixes/changes that programs which require XP SP3 will expect.

Windows XP x64 uses Windows Server 2003. You cannot "trick" Windows 7/8 drivers to install on Windows 2003 or Windows XP because Windows Vista/7/8 introduce a completely new driver model. Windows Vista and forward basically sets out a new "contract" that defines how the drivers are written, what they can do, how Windows communicates with them, and how those Drivers can interact with Windows. Windows XP and earlier have a DIFFERENT "contract" for driver development, so while Windows Vista/7/8 can install and use Windows XP drivers if necessary because the OS knows about the older "contracts" Windows XP cannot use later drivers SINCE it never "signed the contract" so to speak. it would be necessary to make significant modifications to the OS- requiring advanced driver-development experience- before XP could run and interact with those drivers at all.I'd say it deserves a shot. Somebody said that the XP drivers didn't work but the 8 drivers were fine. And we shouldn't get off the subject which is how to force NFSMW 2012 launch on XP. I don't care the quality, I just want it to launch.
And you forgot the year when the original MW was sold !! It was 11th November 2005 not 2003. And I got bored of that one. I played it for 5 years daily. I can't play it anymore. The first boring feeling when played that game was in 2013 in SEPTEMBER on my Windows XP 256 MB RAM machine. Good days then... I miss that computer. The issues you have are with the game authors...not Windows.
However we can continue this conversation because your asking a piece of written software isn;t doing what you want it to do...carry on...Quote from: antoniu200 on October 29, 2015, 03:00:04 PM
Somebody said that the XP drivers didn't work but the 8 drivers were fine.
the XP Drivers for what? I don't even know what you are referring to.

Windows Vista and later drivers cannot be loaded in Windows XP. I don't think I can explain that much more clearly.

Quote
And we shouldn't get off the subject which is how to force NFSMW 2012 launch on XP. I don't care the quality, I just want it to launch.
You can't. I've explained this already. It requires DirectX 10 which you cannot get on Windows XP- the crappy, garbage wrapper programs that change dxdiag to say you have version 10 don't allow you to use DirectX 10 programs/games.
Quote
And you forgot the year when the original MW was sold !! It was 11th November 2005 not 2003.
My point was "the first one" didn't make any sense.
If you didn't saw, I marked this thread solved yesterday. I'll see how's the experiment. Till it's over, peace.Oh, and I know it's impossible for those drivers to work. Don't tell me

Solve : Windows XP does not start and cant install new copy?

Answer» HELLO,

My windows XP suddenly decided that it doesent want to start anymore. It shows that is loading (Logo) then a verry, verry quick BSOD appears and it resets.
I tried to do a format and install. I cant because even if it SEES my CD-ROM and the USB drive, it doesent sees them as bootable devices (i tried with bootable Windows XP and Windows 8 CD and USB stick, none of them worked).

It NEEDS mentioning that SOMETIMES i can ENTER Safe Mode but never normal mode.
I tried allso recovery, with an error showing at the end (i do not remember the error but i can do it again and take note)
I'm starting to give up, but i thought that someone here may have the knoledge to help me.

Thank you and pardon my english...is not my first language. You need to go into the bios and change the boot order, putting the cd drive at the top of the device list (ahead of the hd drive). Save the change and exit. The system should now boot to your bootable CD.

...This computer appears to have a non standard or invalid master boot record. I am not sure what all this means...
This seems to indicate you have a Dell hard drive.
"...The Dell Utility partition exists in one of two states. It's convenient to think of these two states like opening a factory-fresh package in which the package is initially sealed, and then you break the seal and open the package.

A new computer arrives from Dell in the 'sealed' state. When the computer is booted from the hard disk for the very first time, the user MUST acknowledge the Dell End-User License Agreement (EULA), is prompted to record the Dell SERVICE Tag for future reference, and then the computer is allowed to boot into Windows. Once the seal is broken (that is, the computer has booted at least once), this first-time procedure is not repeated. After the computer has booted once in the sealed state, it changes itself to the 'unsealed' state. The Dell Utility partition becomes dormant and does not boot again unless the user deliberately launches it from the bios boot menu. Otherwise, the computer boots directly into Windows..."

Windows Disk Management will confirm this.

If the hidden partiton exists, you can delete it and resize the Windows partition.Computer_Commando thanks for your reply. I bought this HD still in its sealed package. It was purchased new. If its a dell hard drive in some way there is no indication anywhere mentioning this. QUESTION: If in fact this HD has the kind of Dell Utility partition is there a way of removing it? I am so sick of this problem that I am considering the possibility of trying to install it on the second IDE port just to see it it will access normally. If I do this I understand I will still need a main HD w/ a full o/s on the first IDE port. My opint is that if my idea works at least I won't have spent money on this Westen Digital 120 GB HD for nothing.
You mention that Windows Disk management will confirm that this troublesome hard drive might be a dell drive? Perhaps you can show me how to test this option. So far I have used DM and it has not shown me that this drive is a dell one in any way. No dialogue box has popped up or any other PC related message.
I will down load the partition MANAGER you offered. I will inform you how this works out either way. Thanks Computer_Commamdo. I have downloaded the program you suggested. 1. Drive will have no visual indication it was intended for a Dell.
2. Drive was purchased from a reseller. The partition in question is NOT a recovery partition, but a Dell Utility Partition which only functions with a Dell BIOS.
3. I acquired one like this & didn't recognize it had a Dell partition until I used Partition Magic a saw a small "unknown" partition CALLED "Dellxxx" at the beginning of the drive. If there is no indication of a partition before the Windows partition, then the problem could be due to the DataLifeguard tools you used. Depending on the version you used, if you selected install EZ-BIOS it could cause the issues you are having. In my laptop 160GB memory space is there which is shown in Disk management, but in the My computer I am GETTING only 140GB in one drive. In disk management I can see the extra 20GB as an another partition. I am unable to format or access to that drive. Please help me to get into that drive. That is probably your hidden recovery partition....personally i would leave it alone.
But if you insist you NEED thaat space then TRAVEL to the manuf. site and follow the guide for creating the recovery CD's....
MAKE 2 sets and put one in SAFE storage.
You can then safely delete the partition and use Disk Management to allocate the space to your C: drive...Normally, the extra 20GB space is for backup. So you'd better leave it alone.Quote from: Smilence on January 14, 2011, 02:29:33 AM

Solve : ie instead of desk top when computer turned?

Answer»

I would like to know how to fix XP from having the Internet Explorer open as soon as the computer is turner on after the splash screens.

Can't access the Start button, the desktop is not available. The senior's computer was changed by her son. This senior's son does not live close by.

I help seniors at the senior center and am not able to see her desktop computer. I help them with computer basics and with many programs and any questions they have about computers. I do research when I don't know something.

This was very hard to find on the Internet.

Thank you so much
CF11 KEY should remove the full screen view, then look in startup folder and remove the process that is launching the browser at startup.

If this doesnt fix issue then its likely that there is malware that is holding system hostage.

Do you have the installation media to reinstall the OS and software fresh clean install if needed?Hopefully, it's merely full screen. But another possibility is that the shell was switched to Internet Explorer. Normally, the Shell is "Windows Explorer" which is the program responsible for displaying the start menu. It was probably changed to avoid the system being made nonfunctional.

This does put us in a pickle, though- How can we fix it?

Well, one point is that, if Windows Explorer isn't running, running it will bring us the TASKBAR. From there, it's a bit easier to work with and try to fix the setting. But how do we do that?

There are a few ways. Control-Shift-Escape should allow for running TASK Manager, where you can use File->New Task to launch "C:\Windows\Explorer.exe".

If that isn't available (maybe it was restricted too) Another possibility is to download a file from somewhere, or use the "Save As" feature. This will show a Save As Dialog. You should be able to navigate to C:\Windows\ and RUN explorer.exe. You'll have to right-click it and choose "Run" or "Open" rather than "Select".

The Taskbar should appear.

Now, changing the shell is relatively straightforward. it is a registry setting. Now, one possible issue is if her son also restricted the administrator account. It should be possible to run regedit but it may prompt for a password, at which point we'll be stuck. If it doesn't and you can start registry editor, it will be necessary to ADJUST the following registry key by drilling down into the folders:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\WinLogon

There should be a "Shell" Value in the right hand pane. It will be pointing at Internet Explorer Windows Explorer can be replaced by putting C:\Windows\Explorer.exe into this value.

Thanks. Yes I want a clean install and only XP not dual.
can you help me with the steps/instructions pleaseIf the computer originally came with Vista, you may not be able to get XP drivers for it. Have you checked the mfrs website to see if XP drivers are available for it?

ONE problem with newer computers trying to run XP is that the OS does not have any SATA controller drivers built-in so if the Acer uses a SATA drive you will need to find a XP driver for it and load it from a floppy disk. Either that or you will need to slipstream the SATA driver onto the XP install CD. Quote from: strollin on December 06, 2015, 08:24:36 AM

Yes, it looks like they have the drivers you need. You will need to set the SATA controller type in the BIOS to IDE in order to install XP on that drive. Either that or, if you wish for it to use AHCI, you will need to add the SATA controller driver to the XP install disk using a process called slipstreaming. http://www.wikihow.com/Slipstream-Your-SATA-Drivers-Into-a-Windows-XP-Installation-CD-Using-nLite. The only other way to add the SATA driver is via a floppy disk in drive A: (XP is stupid that way). Unfortunately, that computer doesn't have a floppy disk drive.

It's easiest to use IDE mode but you will give up some performance.Quote from: strollin on December 06, 2015, 03:16:55 PM

Thanks, can you shed some light on my boot.ini issue

when I try to install via USB drive (since my DVD drive stopped working), I get the below error message - i believe this is related to the entry in boot.ini

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
<Windows root>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe
Please re-install a copy of the above file

Solve : Denied access to files?

Answer»
Hello,

I have recently used the Acer RECOVERY tool to reload Windows XP whilst saving a back up of all files (see previous thread).

All worked really well and Windows installed fine.

However, when I try to access the backed up files (in C:Backup) I get an error message advising that accedd is denied.

The properties of my C drive show that there is 130Gbs of data used so the files must have been backed up, I just cant access them.

I have an idea that this COULD be because I set a password on the previous installation of XP, but I would have thought that on reinstalling with a single administrator access user would not cause an issue.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated as I have about 100Gbs of photos that I would like to retain (and yes I will back these up afterwards - lesson is being well and truly learned!!)

Solve : Unable to reinstall windows xp?

Answer» HI everyone, I currently have a 5 YEAR old computer that was severely attacked by a virus/es. A few common problems include loss of usb port functionality, all windows help options unavailable for use, windows security programs (firewall etc) turned off without allowance to turn back on, all windows updates would not install, and overall bad performance.
I planned to reinstall windows xp to FORMAT the pc and start fresh however upon inserting the xp os disc, i was given an error message stating that the disc is an earlier version of the CURRENT os installed (It's not unless you count the pc having windows updates via internet as a whole new os). Underneath the message it specifies that if you wish to continue the installation it would remove all current data due to the earlier os. There are three buttons available to decide your answer, continue anyway, cancel and help. the continue option is greyed out and unresponsive to me clicking it, cancel exits the program, and help doesn't work as the help function was damaged (see above virus description).

The disc I'm using is the same as the one used to install it and all legally bought, is there a way to format your hard drive and hopefully remove my computer problems without the xp disc?

In short, what is the best way to format and install xp on my pc.

ThankyouClean XP Install...So reading that tutorial, I'm ESSENTIALLY changing BIOS setting to install from cd or if that doesn't work, floppy disk?CD...yepper...

Solve : Novell Client 4.90 Log In Screen Keeps me from getting to Windows?

Answer»

One of those "great deals"....I picked up a Dell computer that was retired from our LOCAL LIBRARY (I don't know the details of the computer because I cannot access it for any info). When I boot it up I get a log-in box titled "Novell Client for Windows" with User Name and Password fields. I cannot get around it to get to windows controls. I've tried the Control-F11, and tapping the F8 key with no luck. When I TAP the F8 key I get the screen to select Safe Mode or other options but the Start Windows Normally is highlighted and the mouse and UP DOWN arrows do not function so I cannot elect Safe Mode.

Of course I have no boot DISKS....is there any way to get Novell off the computer and get to Windows?
