Solve : WINDOWS/SYSTEM32/CONFIG/SYSTEM corrupt or missing?

Answer»

Hello,

New to the forum but in desperate need of help.

I keep getting this MESSAGE when trying to boot my netbook. Sadly, I do not have my recovery disc as it is in UK and I'm in Argentina.

Have purchased a new XP disc with the hope of reinstalling (the hard disc is partitioned with data separate) windows.

All goes well and I get to a blue screen with 3 options, to install XP, to repair, or to cancel.

If I select either install or repair I just get ANOTHER blue screen with a 'registry error' message and I can get no further.

I have read a similar post on the help pages which gave 2 options. First to use the recovery disc which would involve a ñpng journey! and second to download a recovery utility which I cant do as I cant use the computer (I'm using a hostelone now).

Is there any way around this??Sorry, I should add that I have had the hard drive and RAM tested in a computer shop today and all cleared ok.Quote

WINDOWS/SYSTEM32/CONFIG/SYSTEM corrupt or missing
The above, means that system hive is missing, or corrupted.
If some RESTORE points are present, it's possible to fix it, but if you simply WANT to reinstall XP, see here how to do it: http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/cleanxpinstall.htmlThanks Broni, but I've tried to clean install and still get the registry error blue screen. This happens immediately after selecting onstall when offered the options of install repair or exit.

I am using a netbook with a separate external CD drive. Couldthis be causing an issue?Just an update.

I have read some more posts and cannot get into the Recovery Console. There is no option from the F8 menu on startup and if I try to enter from the XP Disc I get to the prompt to enter 1. C:\windows as my installation CHOICE but on selecting this option I am redirected to the same blue screen with 'Registry_Error' again and can go no further.

I don't seem to be able to do anything to get to a command prompt.Quote
I've tried to clean install and still get the registry error blue screen
This is not possible, if you boot from the CD and really follow instructions for clean installation.
When booting form the CD, Windows is not active, so it can't be giving you any errors about registry.
At my link, there are 37 steps listed.
At what point are you getting apparent BSOD?The best way to fix registry errors is by using a registry cleaner software. Registry cleaners are readily available for download on the Internet.
Feel free to ignore the above post. Registry cleaners are not recommended on this forum. Is there a hidden partion that could have the recovery?

What about the drivers that would be need?

Solve : Windows XP Freezing?

Answer»

I am trying to fix my grandmas computer. I am not too FAMILIAR with computers, but know enough to navigate my way around! The computer just came BACK recently from the Geek Squad at Best Buy with a new anti-spy ware on it. It's web root. Now, when the computer STARTS up, it starts up normal until the desktop comes up. After about 30-60 seconds a icon and balloon at the bottom pops up and says that there is a problem with the firewall, (the Windows one) and that it's turned off, click this balloon to fix the problem. As soon as that icon pops up the computer freezes.. You can move the mouse and cursor, even click on things but NOTHING happens when you do. .Only option from the is to manually turn off the computer. Any idea on how I can fix this? Like I said, I'm not too familiar with the comp lingo, so if you could be a bit specific that would be awesome!.. Thanks a ton in advance! How long have you waited after you turned it on? Leave it for a while and don't do anything for a few minutes and if it becomes responsive then:

Start -> Run -> msconfig -> Press enter
Click startup tab
Uncheck All of them
Press OK
Reboot

Does problem still occur?Try going to Windows Services. Click Start--> Run-->type services.msc--> click Ok --> Look for Windows Firewall and check the Startup Type(Default is Automatic). If its other than default, right-click and choose Properties. Change it to default(automatic) and click "Apply". Try rebooting the computer.

Welcome back to the forum.
You NEED to remind us we version of Windows you're using and information about the Sony laptop. Did you drop it?
Above is the message you indicate There is something wrong with the hard drive. Have you recently done any work on the hard drive?
With the few details we would recommend that you get someone to help you make a backup COPY of your hard drive using another computer. It MEANS the hard drive will have to be removed from your laptop and connected to a desktop MACHINE as a secondary drive. Sometimes this is called setting the drive as a slave. Would you like to see a tutorial about this?

Solve : Outlook Express "compact folders" dumping my .bak files into Recycle bin?

Answer»

I have thousands of EMAILS in my Outlook Express. (I need to archive all my email.) I did clean up alot of it, but STILL thousands in there. OE periodically asks me to "compact folders to free up space". When I do so, it dumps all the .bak files into the recycle bin. (OE back up files). One DAY, in Sept 2010, after it compacted the folders, I found that I was missing hundreds of emails in my "SENT" folder, (only the sent folder, all others were intact), but only from May to Sept 2010. The "sent items.bak" file was in the recycle bin along with all other .bak files. I saved that file in a folder. Someone told me to rename it ".dbx" and restore it. I have not yet done so as I am wondering if it would duplicate ALL THE SENT MAIL, not just from May to Sept 2010.

In any event, why is it doing this every time it compacts folders? Is that because I have too much email archived in OE folders? (If I follow the path to the store folder it shows only the dbx files, not any bak files. I have not emptied the recycle bin of these files as I don't know if I need to restore them. I don't know if this helps, but do you know you can disable the recycle bin?

Right click recycle bin -> Properties -> Check do not move files to recycle bin -> Press OKQuote from: Linux711 on January 14, 2011, 09:25:07 AM

I don't know if this helps, but do you know you can disable the recycle bin?

Right click recycle bin -> Properties -> Check do not move files to recycle bin -> Press OK
But, that would apply to all file deletions and I don't believe that is good advice.

Because that's how it's supposed to work. That's normal, not abnormal.

No, I believe it will replace whatever you have in the Sent Mail folder with what you're restoring. But, to be on the safe side, follow the renaming procedure explained at http://www.ehow.com/how_4464383_restore-deleted-files-from-microsoft.html

Solve : HP Pavilion ze4300: IRQL_NOT_LESS_THEN_OR_EQUAL?

Answer»

I SUSPECTED I had some viruses on my laptop, so I decided to start from scratch with a retail XP disk. I put the disk in the drive, I begin the process, and at or near where 9 minutes are remaining in the installation proocess , I get a blue screen that says 'IRQL_NOT_LESS_THAN_OR_EQUAL'. I dont think it is the hard drive that is messed up, cause it had a PERFECTLY good copy of windows xp on it before I started the reinstall process.

Also, when the install process was installing the network or was about to, it puts up a dialog box that says 'Install network SETTING with normal TCP/IP SETTINGS or custom settings'. I had never seen this before when I installed XP before?

Help!!i got it. it was a bad ram stick. I had TWO, I took out one and the computer never did give me that error again. The installation went through smoothly and its up and running

After that, reboot the XP install CD and install.

EDIT: Here is information from MS about this. Hot Fix available.

You cannot install Windows XP successfully after you use Windows Vista or Windows PE 2.0 to create partitions on a hard disk

Boot to your XP CD and when given the option, delete all partitions then create own or more new ones and format. You should be able to proceed from there.Quote from: Geek-9pm on January 14, 2011, 09:49:13 PM

Solve : 10 year old IBM Thinkpad 310ED?

Answer»

My daughter gave me her IBM THINKPAD 310ED running windows 98SE with 32 MB of ram, a 2.01 GB hard drive and an Ali Pentium CPU. She asked me try and FIX for her. When I was finally able to boot up, I found she had really messed it up not corrupt, just badly messed up to the point of having to format the hard.
This computer came with an internal CD-ROM and an external floppy drive.
I do not have the boot CD, however, I do have the original IBM Thinkpad Recovery CD-ROM Boot Diskette. I also have the original Microsoft floppy Boot Disk for Windows 98 Systems.
My question is, would it be safe to format the hard drive and one of these boot disks to reinstall the operating system? Or, would I better off using these disks without formatting the hard drive?
I might add that I am using this as a learning experience.
I would appreciate any assistance from any quarter. The Restore CD will when run will automatically format the drive and take the machine back to Day One status...
The problem with this is ALL her data and Programs installed after that will be GONE.
Do you have a backup strategy for the stuff she may not WANT to lose ? ?I have the same OLD 310ED thinkpad but iI am missing the software. Is it possible you sent my message to the author. Maybe he will make copies of the softwareThis thread died 7 years ago. You will need to search online for a recovery disk. There are companies that sell ISO disk images.

Solve : Batch file problems windows XP?

Answer»

Hi All,
NEW to this but I'm trying to set up a .bat or .cmd file to run a ping every 12 hours on a loop and record it in a file.

I've got the below running (set to every 6 seconds for trialing) successfully in windows 7 but it won't work in XP.

@ECHO on
set IPADDRESS=8.8.8.8
set INTERVAL=6
:PINGINTERVAL
ping %IPADDRESS% -N 1 >> C:\test.txt
time /T >> C:\test.txt
date /T >> C:\test.txt
timeout %INTERVAL%
GOTO PINGINTERVAL

I also tried this one
@ECHO on
cls
:start
ping 8.8.8.8 -n 1 >> d:\test.txt
echo logged time = %time% %date% >> d:\test.txt
timeout /t 6
goto start

both work fine in windows 7, but not XP.

Thanks in advanceYou can make it work. Some observations.
Until you get thing thing working, do not use a loo forever thing. Maybe just loop five times to see what is in the report file.

Also, the report file should be cleared the first time you use it.
Instead of a timer. maybe your should schedule the job to be done through the days.

What is this?
Code: [Select]timeout %INTERVAL%Timeout is not found in my XP.
It is part of Windows 7/2008 and XP RESOURCE Kit
https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc754891.aspx
Also see:
Running Scheduled Task Multiple Times a Day
Did you INSTALL the Timeout from the resource kit and is Timeout.exe LOCATED in same location as the batch file to run?

I usually use the sleep command instead myself, but you will need to make sure you have sleep.exe if your going to use that instead.

More info here on Sleep vs Timeout http://stackoverflow.com/questions/28057443/difference-between-sleep-and-timeoutDaveLembke, good catch. Well you knew like me that its not a normal part of XP and part of resource kit to be added for Timeout support. If that isnt installed and/or Timeout.exe not located in the directory that the batch is executed it will just return with invalid command. Hopefully this fixes it for them. If the resource kit is installed it should auto resolve for the Timeout instruction, however if they didnt install the resource kit but placed the Timeout.exe file in the same directory with the batch instruction it would probably work the same as the trick to add the Sleep command to systems that didnt come with it. Also, ping can be used for a time delay, if you are using ping anyway. Still, I thunk for doing the whole day should be in Task Schedule.

I'd say for any delay more than 5 minutes or so is better approached with Task Scheduler, myself.

Hello again....I am using Windows XP pro. I have been searching the net for a solution. I found this in several different places.
If you are using high-throughput ATA disks and controllers capable of a data transfer rate higher than 33.3 megabytes per second, replace the standard 40 pin cable with an 80 pin cable.
Not being to dumb but what does this mean? Does it mean I should change the cable from my hard drive to my motherboard? I did use an older cable from another computer when I rebuilt my computer.

If your computer is newer than, say, six years old, then this shouldn't be a problem.

The IDE cable that your hard drive is using is what that message is referring to. Older cables are 40 pin (and some cables for CD and DVD-ROM drives still use 40). Newer ones are 80-pin (the ribbon has thinner wires...80 of them instead of 40).

In any case, I don't think that's relevant (even less relevant if your hard drive is SATA), so we can take our focus off of this.

It may be the keyboard.

I don't think it's the keyboard. Otherwise, it wouldn't have accepted any input (it would have been stuck on the part where you have to PRESS Enter to install Windows).

I think it's one of two things:
1) Corrupt data on the hard drive
2) The hard drive is toast.

Try running CHKDSK /r through the Recovery Console (press R to get to the recovery console instead of pressing Enter to install Windows). Thank you killerb255,

I did try running CHKDSK /r through the Recovery Console first, but this didn't work. I had a feeling it maybe was my hard drive....my other hard drive should have worked though...it has the same Windows XP on it as well...unless both Hard drives where faulty. My old hard drive was lying around for a few years.
What I think I will do is buy a new hard drive and cables, and then a power supply and then see...if this doesn't work then I will change the motherboard and prossesser. Rebuild a new computer.

Thanks everyone for your help.

Solve : Re: Blue Screen..stop: 0X000000ED?

Answer»

Hi,

My daughter has a Inspiron Mini Netbook. This morning she booted it up and it came up the the Blue Scren and the error UNMOUNTABLE_ BOOT_VOLUME and a Stop: 0x000000ED error.

She was using the machine last night to play music on from my USB stick (No Viruses - Checked) This morning tried to start the machine and it shows the XP start screen and then goes to the blue screen. (she also installed MSN last night)

As far as I can determine, there has been no changes after the msn installation since last night when it worked perfectly fine.

There is much on the net about recovering, using the XP CD and installing again etc, but this is a Netbook, NO CD or DVD. It came with no OS CD or DVD, how can I recover this. I hope I am not expected to throw it out as it cost €350 from PC World 198 months ago. The warranty ran out 6 months ago so I have no recourse to Dell, but I would like to know how to get the machine BACK up and running.

i also tried this but it wont works
Quote from: JJ 3000 on NOVEMBER 25, 2008, 08:54:48 PM

Start your computer back up and tap F8 to get into the advanced startup options. Here, choose "Disable automatic restarts on system failure" This should keep it from restarting. The blue screen error message should stay on the screen now. Write down that error and post back with it.

The warranty ran out 6 months ago so I have no recourse to Dell, but I would like to know how to get the machine back up and running.

i also tried this but it wont works and only msn software installed recently what she said.

Please someone help as I am very frustrated and all my daughters course work is on the machine for her Exams at the end of this school year.

Thanks in advance,
actually i reached about this error last night and came across this article related to "Stop: 0x000000ED"
so, the article says my boot volume got corrupted and it does what i've found at the end
here's the command what i use in cmd.
opened cmd by my windows usb stich, great thing which i've also learned by the way
Command 1# – Diskpart

Command 2# – List volume

Command 3# – Exit
Command 4# – D: (You’re Windows Drive Letter)

Command 5# – Bootrec /fixmbr

Command 6# – Bootrec /fixboot

Command 7# – Chkdsk /f (Try chkdsk /f /r If “Chkdsk /f” command Wont Works)

Command 8# – Y

After “chkdsk” command completes, just restart my computer and I my problem is solved.

one more question why a software like msn can cause this problem?
Kind of odd msn software would have anything to do with it.

I'd keep my eyes on the machine, but first I'd back up files "your daughters course work" specifically you can back those up to a flash drive.

Thanks
Joe The hard drive may be failing.
A drive TEST program may help. But it does not stop it from failing.
I agree with Geek. It's possible your HD may be on the way out. You should MAKE certain that any important data is backed up to an off-disc medium.thnks all of you for the help
every things is working now and saved all of my daughter's project data

Solve : Acronis problem - may be XP related?

Answer»

I'm not sure where to put this question.

I clone my hard drives using Acronis Home 11.0 on a regular basis. But the last time I tried to clone the C: drive at the point where the system needs to reboot to do so, I got an Acronis error msg (E000A03EE - UNABLE to Update the Registry). And it stopped there.

I checked Acronis for this error and could find nothing. I'm thinking that the problem may be with the XP registry and not the Acronis software.

The only thing I did differently from other times was to download CC Cleaner prior to the cloning attempt.

I'm thinking that there MIGHT be some switch that was thrown which prevents Acronis from rebooting. I'm concerned because my backup C: drive does not work when I tried to boot from it. This might be because the last time I cloned it (2 weeks ago) there was the word Error when Acronis was done, even though Acronis put out the message that the clone was successful.

Any ideas/suggestions? Thank you in advance.

You downloaded ccleaner or you downloaded and ran it? Do you have a RESTORE point to which you can return? About an Acronis image?I have tried my restore points - they never have worked, even though I have the restore option activated.

As far as I can recall, I don't believe I ran the CC Cleaner. It had an auto run option and I believe I didn't take that route.I suggest you check the hd first.

Make sure you select the tool which is appropriate for the brand of your hard drive.
Depending on the program, it'll create bootable floppy, or bootable CD.
If downloaded file is of .iso type, use ImgBurn: http://www.imgburn.com/ to burn .iso file to a CD (select "Write image file to disc" option), to make the CD bootable.
For Toshiba drives, see here: http://sdd.toshiba.com/main.aspx?Path=ServicesSupport/FujitsuDrivesUSandCanada/SoftwareUtilities#diagnosticI completed the Short Drive Self Test and the Short Generic Test. Both completed successfully. Is that enough or do I need the Long Generic or Advanced Tests?

Was this a full backup...or incremental ? ?This was a full backup.Only reason i asked was if incremental and changes or cleanups were done to the registry it would explain that error message...nevermind.Okay, a couple of things.

1) Open a command prompt and type chkdsk /r (then press ENTER). You will be told the drive is locked and do you want to run checkdisk at the next boot. Say yes, exit the command prompt and reboot. Checkdisk will run with the "REPAIR" switch enabled. Let it run to completion.

2) After the system reboots, open a command prompt and type set (press ENTER). At the bottom, look at the username. Is it the account to which you wish to login and does that account have admin privileges? Assuming yes to both,

3) Run regedit. Right-click on one of the hive names (ie, "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE"). Click on Permissions. Click on the Advanced button. At the top, is the owner either the same as the account to which you are logged in (with admin privileges) or the ADMIN account?

By the WAY, when you create images with True Image or ANY disc imaging software, make sure the default settings include the option to always verify the image upon creation.OK, I ran the chkdsk /r. I wasn't home when it completed but I managed to reboot the PC.

I ran 'set'. I'm not sure which heading to pay attention to, I'm assuming it would be USERDOMAIN=MYCOMPUTER. USERNAME=user was also there which might also be relevant.

When I went into regedit, the advanced screen listed four items: None were inherited and all were "Allowed"

SYSTEM - Full Control
Administrators (MYCOMPUTER\Administrators) - Full Control
Everyone - Read
Restricted - Read

So I'm assuming that everything is OK - unless MYCOMPUTER should not have \Administrators on it.

I also hit the Owner tab. Administrators (MYCOMPUTER\Administrators) was on the first line and is listed as the current owner.
User (MYCOMPUTER\user) was on the second line.

That might be relevant. What do I do now?
If the issues is Acronis not having permission to write to the registry, I can show you how to change the ownership of the registry to the logged in user. However, the tool we're going to use is a powerful weapon and since you don't have a reliable image you can use in the event of a problem you'll need to make sure you have a good copy of the registry to which you can return if needed. There are two ways to backup the registry (and let's do both, just to be certain):

1) Download and run ERUNT (http://www.larshederer.homepage.t-online.de/erunt/)

2) Click on START - RUN and type: Regedit (press ENTER). On the menu bar click on file, then export, choose where you want to save it, then enter a name for it in the box titled: File Name. At bottom put a tick in "All", then click on save. If you ever want to restore the saved version, just IMPORT it.

Now keep in mind I'm not in any way sure that permissions are the issue and I'd strongly urge you to try to get a response directly from Acronis first. I've had several experiences with both their phone and email tech support and in each instance they have responded quickly and done their best to assist. If, in the end, you want to go ahead and change the permissions, go to the following link and follow the instructions exactly to run the SUBINACL utility. Be sure to replace "YOURUSERNAME" with your correct login name (the same you found when you ran "SET" under Username. BTW, I've used this tool about a dozen times and never had any problems, but since it is changing the permissions in your registry I feel obligated to urge caution:

http://blogs.msdn.com/b/astebner/archive/2006/09/04/739820.aspxGlad you mentioned ERUNT....you have no idea how many users seem to think simply exporting the registry is a full backup....nothing could be further than the truth...That sounds scary, so I decided to give the Acronis clone procedure another try.

And it worked. I even tested out the cloned HD to be sure it would boot.

I have always said that if you don't believe in magic, you have never worked in the computer field. I was in it from 1979 - 1986 and I definitely believe!

Thank you very much for your help.Glad you got it sorted out. I'd still reach out to Acronis Customer Support if I were you and see if they can figure out the original problem.

Solve : Computer won't boot - stuck at "We apologize..."?

Answer»

I have a custom built computer with an Intel core 2 quad, Asus P5Q MB, 4GB mem, Seagate 500 GB drive, using Win XP Pro, SP3. It's been working fine, but suddenly this morning the dreaded window opened that starts "We apologize for the inconvenience......etc." Then lists several possible ways to start Windows, including "Start Windows Normally". However, the screen is frozen - NON of the arrow keys do anything, everything is frozen - nothing happens,

Any ideas?1) When do you see that message and what is the entire message?

2) What is new or different since the last time everything worked properly (ie, new hw, new sw, virus, error, etc)? The message appears very early - right after the screen displays the name and model of the Mobo.
The message is quite long - and I'm a slow two finger typer!! Here goes:

WE APOLOGIZE FOR THE INCONVENIENCE, BUT WINDOWS DID NOT START SUCCESSFULLY. A
RECENT HARDWARE OR SOFTWARE CHANGE MIGHT HAVE CAUSED THIS.

IF YOUR COMPUTER STOPPED RESPONDING, RESTARTED UNEXPECTEDLY, OR WAS
AUTOMATICALLY SHUT DOWN TO PROTECT YOUR FILES AND FOLDERS, CHOOSE LAST KNOWN
GOOD CONFIGURATION TO REVERT TO THE MOST RECENT SETTINGS THAT WORKED.

IF A PREVIOUS STARTUP ATTEMPT WAS INTERRUPTED DUE TO A POWER FAILURE OR BECAUSE THE POWER OR RESET BUTTON WAS PRESSED, OR YOU AREN'T SURE WHAT CAUSED THE PROBLEM, CHOOSE START WINDOWS NORMALLY.

SAFE MODE
SAFE MODE WITH NETWORKING
SAFE MODE WITH COMMAND PROMPT

LAST KNOWN GOOD CONFIGURATION (YOUR MOST RECENT SETTINGS THAT WORKED)

START WINDOWS NORMALLY

USE THE UP AND DOWN ARROW KEYS TO MOVE THE HIGHLIGHT TO YOUR CHOICE.
SECONDS UNTIL WINDOWS STARTS: 0.

Nothing is new or different since the last time everything worked properly. You say the system is frozen at that screen. It's unlikely it's frozen - more likely you are using a usb KEYBOARD and the system can't see it at boot. Are you using a usb keyboard? If so, try using a ps2 connection. If not, we'll have to talk about a repair install. No, I am using a ps2 connection.Well, then I think you are going to have to do a repair install. Boot to the XP cd and choose the SECOND repair option. XP will install on top of itself. Done properly, all settings and apps will remain intact. You'll have to go to Windows Update to download and install all updates. Thanks for all your suggestions. I tried them all, but no luck. Today I finally reluctantly took it in to the local computer repair service. They wiped the hard disk clean and re-installed Windows. Hope all is well now.
Thanks again.

A lot of the Anti-programs l ran had an option of not creating a log when when you run them, I didn't unclick that option until I realized I was making a log every time I ran them when I seen my hard drive was filled with the logs

They are not the most inportant files, just things I thought I wanted to save. I thought that I knew what program was used to make them but everything I try comes back corrupted, like I say I'm not the brightest BULB on a computer.
How much space is on your Hard Drive? Are you running out of space?

Is your PC working OK? If so, why tamper with things you're not sure of.

Download CCleaner and this will clean your machine. DO NOT use the registry cleaner as there is no need.

Download it here

Its free. What type of Antispyware software? On what LOCATIONS do you delete those logs? Usually Logs are saved within the software and has an option to delete all the Logs via Log tabs.Use this: http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner

Solve : how to disable file open notification of packager.exe?

I use an mp3 playing software that first copy selected mp3 from MAPPED drive of C:\ and then play with the relevant mp3 player. But before opening the file it displays the packager NOTIFICATION that should it be opened or not.
This message ALWAYS appears when I attempt to open an mp3 file with the help of mp3 software.
I ALSO mention that this message was not appeared when I used XP with service Pack-1. After installing Service Pack-2, this problem occurs.
Sounds a bit like a virus to me.
Agree. It seems like your MP3 is infected by virus. Better to scan your mp3.

Solve : system failures: source system error, ID 1003, stop c0000135?

Answer»

I've been getting restarts/BSODS/system failures on an inconsistent basis for about 3 months. It's been gradually worsening; first was only restarts when shutting down, then BSoDs too, then most recently sudden BSoDs while still using the computer. Also messages about recovering from a serious error upon booting back up, from the start. Because of the intermittent nature of the problems, and not being sure about when or if I should use a system restore point, I didn't do anything yet. Now my oldest restore point is after I had installed what I'm pretty sure is the software that the problems started from (Networx, which comes with known-to-them crappy drivers). I had uninstalled this software about 2 months ago, and had manually confirmed that at least one of its drivers was no longer on my system. At first things seemed better, eventually however the intermittent problems continued, and are worsening.

I've looked through the Device Manager info for any indications of problem drivers. I've used the System Information tool (msinfo32) to examine possible problem devices, and startup programs. And turned off the system failure restart option.

I'm going to use Check Disk to check the HD, and possibly Driver Verifier to look for driver problems. Also, I'll see if a safe mode boot allows a problem-free restart or shut down (but, of course, no problem happens a lot of times already). And perhaps try a clean boot, though I'm not sure what this proves, unless it's the same thing as with safe mode.

I have the Event Viewer logs and 64KB memory dump files for the last 3 occurrences, plus BSoD screen photos for the 4th to 2nd last. I'm not sure how to upload these attachments at the moment. I have a plan of action in mind listed below, but first here are the Event Viewer logs, most recent first:

I've done exhaustive research online into it, have got some general ideas how to resolve it, but not sure exactly. I've been going largely by https://support2.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;Q308029 for a plan of action. (I don't have the Windows XP CD-ROM.) I'll list my prospective plans, and please tell me if they're the way to go:

1. IF I can actually find out which file/driver/service is causing the problem, it sounds like System Configuration Utility (msconfig.exe) would be how to disable it. Or possibly just delete it, depending. That's a big "if", it sounds like a real challenge to find the problem file or driver. But I'd rather repair the registry than try to replace it, if possible.

2. There is a better driver package that can be used with Networx that I downloaded. I wonder if reinstalling Network and/or just the alternate drivers could possibly overwrite the problematic ones it left behind, and fix the system instability? Or maybe this is just wishful thinking it could be so easy to fix?

3. I've considered using the oldest system restore point, but that is about 2 weeks after the problem software was installed. I do also have a backup from 11 months ago with NT Backup (and the C:\WINDOWS\repair hive files seem to be of about the same date interestingly), so I could restore an undamaged registry from that. But, I'm not sure if that is going to cause all files newer than my backup to disappear, or for that matter if a restore point might do the same.
In general, errors that are not consistent suggest hardware failures.
You should run hardware diagnostics of older equipment on a regular schedule.

Also, service of such older equipment requires a backup plan. How to backup XP and other versions of Windows has been well documented ELSEWHERE. Suitable hardware is required. Either you make backups on removable media, or you use another hard drive.

Memory tests are readily available. Memtest86 is often recommended. But even a good live Linux CD may have a memory test that will do the job. Have a Linux live CD should be part of your toolkit.
See here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_live_CDs

My recommendation is to shift your attention to hardware diagnostics. The error messages have limited value when hardware is unstable. So you first have to know the hardware is in good shape. Especially older Hard Drives.
Free Hard Drive Testing

Also, booting in safe mode reduces some kinds of problems. When testing, save mode is a good idea to reduce strange errors.

Let us know how you do. Thanks for the good advise. I've been working on this as much as I could the last month. Quite a waste of a summer spent indoors so much . But I've checked all the hardware now.

My first backup was on a flash drive, but that quickly became too small . Thereafter I've been doing backups of my system on an external hard drive. I originally wanted to on CDs, but it was going to take too many of them, and tricky to find the right software (I know of one now). I've been using the crappy NT Backup, but I've found good options now, including something like Clonezilla for next time.

I already had the Legacy OS live CD, though not specifically designed for recovery or diagnostics. Also already got Slax live CD for recovery purposes, but it turned out to not be able to boot properly. I now got the Ultimate Boot CD, which is awesome for diagnostics/benchmarking, has backup imaging, and everything recovery-wise (except the included Parted Magic version has a serious USB bug).

I got MemTest86, ran it for 3 passes (2 thorough passes), and got no errors. It's on UBCD too. I was going to use GSmartControl on Parted Magic, and noticed UBCD had Drive Fitness Test for my particular drive. It does a very thorough test for that specific brand HDD, so I ran the random read thorough test, and the results were no errors/problems. MemTest86 tests the CPU implicitly also, but I also ran a CPU stress test from UBCD for a short while, which would at least be long enough to generate errors on a flaky system. Got no errors. I'll run a lengthy CPU stress test later, but there's not likely to be a problem there. It looks like all the hardware is good.

Every time I've shut down or rebooted from safe mode there was no system failure, except just after I installed a crap browser (SlimBrowser) that caused some further and more serious system INSTABILITIES (intermittent touchpad failure, system screeching to a halt). I had to manually uninstall it, and used Last Known Good Config. Then there weren't any more of those extra problems. The intermittent system failures continue with the regular XP boots, primarily only when shutting down.

One of the stop errors has a repeating message referring to LIBEAY32.dll being missing (sounds like something to do with cryptography). Is there any way I can use that to track down the problem?

I'm including the Event Viewer logs and BSOD screenshots attached. But it's not looking promising so far to identify what exactly the problem with Windoze is. I'm shortly going to be installing good OS's on flash drive and HD, like I'd intended to originally. Then if Winblows fails on me, well I've got better OS's now anyway. (The only thing is certain types of software may only be available for Win.)

But as for restoring XP to relatively problem free, what would I have to do? Would uninstalling every last piece of software since the problems started originally (4+ months ago), and replacing the registry with the only backup I have before the trouble started (from a year ago) do it?

[attachment deleted by admin to conserve space]I completely forgot to mention a strange behavior that I think started around the same time as these system failures. That being the graphics on the screen seemingly randomly flash and/or reload, it being particularly noticeable whenever the desktop screen is displayed. Today it was doing that really frequently on the desktop-- generally it's only once every several minutes, half hour, or so. Does this sound indicative of anything, or familiar?

As a sidenote, the Parted Magic I mentioned that's included on the Ultimate Boot CD, I tried it today and it turns out that it fails to load properly. It gets loads of errors, continues but then eventually stops, causes the caps lock and one other LED on the keyboard to continuously flash on and off, and then is completely unresponsive to any command I know. It requires cutting the power holding down the power button. I know it's a viable DOWNLOAD because I used a checksum confirmation before burning. From what I've experienced and read about, there seem to be a lot of those defective/incompatible boot CDs out there (it's not UBCD, it's the Parted Magic version on it). I GUESS that'd be one good reason to have tried the free version before throwing money away buying it. Quote from: Superhuman on August 04, 2015, 12:56:50 AM

Update: from what I found out now, there was a possibility my floppy setting in BIOS was causing a problem with Parted Magic, so I switched it back on. It now booted properly (though very slowly-- it seems to load a massive amount of stuff). I'm not sure if the problem was because of the BIOS setting, or because my CD drive is now starting to fail (as it is).Quote

Yes.
You can buy a new CD-ROM drive for about $20 or less.

Sounds like you have done a lot of work on the old machine.
Trying to know all the possible issues is much too hard for most of us. A professional Engineer work long hours each day for weeks to resolve just one issue in a complex system.
One problem is how thing interact. Both in software and hardware this is hard to catch. For laymen, the best we can do is the process of elimination.

Also, you may have to flash the BIOS. The risk is that the system may fail all the way. Or it may recover. No way to know until you do it.
How you get it fixed.

Yeah, I tried to make progress by finding out about things and working on things, with limited results. The "old" machine is the only modern one I have at the moment .

Wow, no doubt! I have been finding a lot of dead leads/total lack of leads of where/what next to try. I'm used to much simpler and older computers that don't have anywhere near this level of software problems (Amiga 500 & 1200 line). A lot more reliable, and less sophisticated, indeed. Linux is supposed to be similar to AmigaDOS (as I've seen myself recently), and that's what I'm going to switch to as soon as I get an opportunity. Perhaps it's also more reliable/less convoluted of a system.

Exactly for that reason in your statement that non-pros can only use process of elimination, I had noted when my original problems started, it's probably best not to install several programs at once... in fact just one at a time.

So, by "flash the BIOS" I think you mean erase it and reload the contents anew, if that is right? I was wondering why UBCD has BIOS erasing/fixing utilities. If a BIOS flash causes it to fail all the way, does that mean the system is useless with any OS, and irreparable unless the CMOS can be replaced?
Spice does not allow a full disclosure of all the things that can go wrong. BIIOSA fails in three ways. Maybe four.
1. The BIOS firmware may not support features needed is some new software.
2. The BIOS chip itself as lost a few bits, causing unexpected behavior.
3. The BIOS chip may fail completely, not able to recovery itself.

The forth reason might be an unexpected power surge or a bad solder joint or some other thing. Maybe even a solar flare.

If the BIOS can be flashed again, it should work better than before. Or not at all.

When that old computer was made there was little thought about making it last for many years. And that still is the general policy of modem industry.

This article was done three years ago. It still represents the attitude of industry leaders. They want to yo buy a new PC every three years.

Apple’s gorgeous new MacBook Pro with Retina display made its debut at WWDC on Monday. The “Retina display” is what makes this new laptop so noteworthy. Apple’s standard 15” MacBook Pro has a resolution of 1440 by 900. The new Retina model ... A few years from now, these displays will be the norm. Right now, it’s only available on the Mac.
So they will have something else later on.
NEWSFLASH: I found out not only was it Networx that caused the problems on my system, as I suspected, but somewhere around 6 months later AVG detected the original version I installed (networx_setup_5.3.3.0.exe) was infected with WebFilter.Q. VirusTotal confirms some further detections of it. So it isn't just a poorly designed program, or the driver package that came with it, as I had thought. It's spyware! I checked for any software to repair it, but couldn't find anything.

Yeah well I've had my used system for 4 3/4 years now, and it still works. I've only had to replace the CD writer. The LCD and battery basically wore out so I also use an external monitor (and external keyboard and mouse, using it as a desktop). As long as it's a quality brand (Dell), you replace mechanical drives that wear out, solid state components will likely keep going for a very long time, then it can keep lasting for many years. Even NASA Mars probes were only designed to last a limited time, that experience incredibly harsh physical conditions, but have lasted many times longer. So it's not asking so much for a terrestrial computer kept indoors to last similarly.Quote from: Superhuman on February 18, 2016, 02:43:54 AM
I found out not only was it Networx
This is almost certainly a false positive. I have been using Networx for years, and every so often you hear about antivirus products flagging it up. The problem is that Networx includes a third-party filter component to allow the user to (optionally) filter out local (LAN) traffic. This same filter is used by malware writers, so some antivirus products pick it up.

Solve : Window XP only loads in 'Safe Mode'?

Answer»

Just out of nowhere, I turn on my computer, starts as usual with the Windows XP logo with the scroll underneath. Then at the WELCOME page a box pops up titles User Environment. In the box it says: Windows can not load user's profile but has logged you on with the default profile for the SYSTEM. It goes through a countdown and acts like it is going to load but the screen is just BLUE, no screen SAVER, nothing. I tried turning it on and off a few times. Other times on the blue screen it would have my icons, but will not open any of them, an error box comes up. Now, when I reboot in Safe mode it works fine, although I noticed audio does not work. So why work in safe mode and nothing else? If anyone could help me it would be greatly appreciated!!!! Thank you!!! I have to add, my computer is getting up there, I got it in 2001 for college. People tell my I should get a new ONE, but everything is on there, files, music, etc... I really don't need a new computer at this point in time, this was still getting me by.Tried creating a new user account yet?

Unusual Shortcut Behavior

Problem with existing desktop shortcut on Windows XP desktop.

If I right click on HP share to web shortcut computer FREEZE up.
Do not get this behavior when I right click any other desktop shortcut.

I don't think this problem is related to the CONTEXT menu.

When I run "regedit" and GO to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT
DRIVE
SHELL ex
Context Menu Handlers
I don't see any HP related items.

I no longer use this shortcut, but the HP program is still installed on this computer.
All I REALLY want to do is remove the shortcut from my desktop.

When I go to "my computer_desktop" I don't see the shortcut in that folder either.
Try this,

Go to Start -> All Programs -> HP Share-to-Web, click on HP Share-to-Web Wizard.
Click NEXT ...until you come to the screen that asks if you want the desktop icon - choose NO and then click FINISH.Thanks zep516.
Your solution worked perfectly.You're welcome,

Solve : sfc /scannow?

Answer»

I want to run sfc /scannow on my XP Pro 64 bit but am told to insert the Service Pack 2 CD-ROM before it will continue. Just what kind of CD is this and where or how do I GET one?

I have the XP Pro 64 bit SP 2 .exe file in a folder on my HDD and have burned it to a CD but the scf utility tells me that is the wrong CD.

There are a couple different forms of SP2. Microsoft mailed SP2 to registered CORPORATE customers many years ago and I got 2 of them. My guess is that its looking for a target file on that CD and there is a naming mismatch of some kind. For SP2 there is the Microsoft update method as well as the System Admin Network install of SP2, as well as the SP2 CD that Microsoft mailed out to registered corporate customers who requested the CD.

It might be a matter of making sure the SP2 file is a specific file name and not a variant such as the Network System Admin SP2 download might be a different named EXE than the service pack 2 exe that came on the CD. Matching the file names might be the fix.

Lastly... if this is a bootleg of XP 64bit it could be broken in which it will never find SP2. If this is the case then you need to get a legal COPY of XP 64bit off of ebay etc. It's a legit copy I have the original disk. I built this computer from the ground up about 7 years ago and purchased a legit copy of XP Pro x64. I could dig up the old CD and try that but it doesn't have SP 2 on it and this is specifically what the utility asks for. I was wondering if I created and ISO disk using that copy of SP 2 I have on my HDD do you think SFC might except that? I had no idea there were that many different copies of SP 2 for XP Pro x64. I'll attach SS of the dialog boxes I get but there isn't much info there

[attachment deleted by admin to conserve space]Under more information tab what does it show? Maybe it will give us a file name its looking for.

A slipstream of SP2 XP64 could be created, but this would cause you to clean build it or perform a repair INSTALLATION instead of satisfying the DLLsSee Here...I've given up on running the sfc. A friend of mine managed to get his to run after some registry hacking but sfc messed up his OS so he did a system restore to the day before. I did reinstall SP 2 and it found two files that were older than the ones in SP 2 and updated them. I think I will leave well enough alone.

Thanks guys for trying to help, appreciate it.

Solve : Windows Upgrading Question?

Answer»

First I'd like to apologize if this question has been asked before, I did a little searching but couldn't find what I was looking for so here I am posting.

I use my computer mainly for gaming, it's an Intel Core i5 750, with a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 470 video card. I also have 2, 2gig memory sticks installed but as I'm on windows home 32 bit only 2.99 is being recognized and used. And this is where my question comes in. I've finally gotten fed up with not being able to use more than 3gig memory and am starting to consider upgrading my OS. But I'm unsure of what to upgrade too, windows xp pro 64 or windows 7 64. Being that I play many games on my computer, old and new I'm concerned with compatibility issues with windows 7 but as I can't find xp pro 64 for less than what I'd pay for 7 (maybe I'm looking in the wrong places) I'm wondering if in the long run it would be better to just go with 7 rather than getting xp pro now and eventually spending more money to upgrade to 7.

Anyways, so my question is for anyone who has experience with xp pro and windows 7 and gaming. What would you recommend I do? Money IS an issue so I'm TRYING to make the BEST choice while keeping my budget in mind.

Thanks in advance!Get Win7.

Will save you money in the long run, some older games will run in compatibility mode, and a lot of new games seem to be dropping support for XP.

Ive been USING windows 7 64bit for gaming since it came out, apart from the odd security issue ive never had a problem. Thank you Laurence for the reply. I've only ever used XP so I'm a little nervous about the switch. I hadn't even thought about compatibility mode.

Unless a hack is executed that elevates the permissions through a vulnerability executed as User on a system that is lacking patches to prevent its elevation of permissions due to a design flaw of a windows system object ( OVERFLOWS etc ).

What is your exact application to NEED to run as Admin in a User environment without using Run As??? Solve : System Restore For XP?

If you've reformatted your hard drive to factory settings then No, you've wiped your hard drive, everythings gone.

Sounds like your not that experienced. Next time you have a problem or you're not sure what something does, ask here first.

Also, make regular back-ups, PREFERABLY before you start messing with your machine.

What Operating System?I'm not exactly sure what you did, but you certainly didn't format your hd - not even sure why that was mentioned. Uninstalling Office does NOT uninstall Outlook Express. If you restored your system to its original state you should still have OE. Again, I'm just not sure what you've done.I did the compaq system recovery from start pc help & tools. I can go to to C:\documents and settings\compaq owner\desktop and still see what was on my desktop before I screwed up.But a lot of the things on it don't work properly or the data is gone.
Are any of your files or documents on the PC.

What do you mean 'data is gone'?? Is there just an icon?? What happens when you click in it?Some of the programs will run by data the things I saved in the program are gone,a couple of the programs had to be re downloaded. This happened on 1/08 I just want to find a way to do a system restore to 1/07,but now when I go to system restore it will only go back to 1/08. and not back any earlier. You can;t after doing a reinstall...

Solve : Having trouble with WPA2 at home.?

Answer»

A definition of WPA2:
WPA2 (Wi-FI PROTECTED Access 2) is a network security technology commonly used on Wi-Fi wireless networks. WPA2 replaced the ORIGINAL WPA technology on all certified Wi-Fi hardware since 2006 and is based on the IEEE 802.11i technology standard for data encryption.Mar 31, 2016

It seems that Windows XP does not work well with current WPA2. Or so it seems. About MONTH back o it was working. Now it does not. So I have to use my wireless without ant security.

Using Malware bytes, no virus was found. So I SUPPOSE this is a XP specific thing. The problem does not show in Windows 10. But I like to web surf in XP. It is a habit hard to break.
Any ideas?

EDIT: A new update for WPA2 was released. I have not tried it.
http://yourtipdshow.info/2016/02/18/microsoft-update-xp-wpa2/
I have a Thinkpad T41 running Windows XP and it connects to my WPA2 network without issue.

There has been no recent update. That website is a spam website that scrapes other websites. The "update" in question to add support for WPA2 is from May of 2005, and applies to SP2. It is rolled into SP3.

I think you'll agree that "It's not working" leaves an awful lot to the imagination!

BC_Programmer, what you aid is reasonable. But still, I have a kind of feeling that something changed in the past few months.
Yes, I recall there was a lot of snuff about WP2 some time ago. Bu I have had XP SP3 working on two machines earlier this year using WPA2 an no issues.
Has anybody else out there had any recent WPA2 problems? Am I the only one?

Solve : Nteflix, Windows XP and me.?

Answer»

This is a recent problem I have encountered with Netflix, Firefox and Windows XP.
The key PART of the problem is that Windows XP is no longer supported by Microsoft and other companies have followed suit. From my PERSONAL experience it appears that Netflix is no longer completely compatible with Windows XP in certain specific situations.
I have also tried using Google Chrome and have also tried to reinstall Microsoft Silverlight. Both are no longer compatible with Windows XP. So I had to use the current version of Firefox. End of problem? No, not really.

It seems the new version of Firefox has an unrelated mystery problem with Windows XP. I can print from Firefox. I will not even try to explain it.
So I opt to use an older version of Firefox. Something odd comes up.

To illustrate the problem, here is a screenshot, (I have produced in size and cropped), it shows the message that I get from Netflix and special circumstances. In my case, I had been watching movies on Netflix, and decided to try a different movie. I found a new movie about the childhood of Walt Disney, the creator of Mickey Mouse.

The THING here is that I do not see this error message on other movies. So far I have not tried a large number of movies and this one seems to be the only one that Netflix will flag as having an error. Notice that Netflix does not BLAME the movie as being the cause of the air. Rather it blames my Internet connection is being the source of the trouble.

OK. What is the point? Nothing. Ignore this unless you find somebody else that has the same issue. I have learned to live with the fact that older software may introduce stranger behavior.

Solve : windows updates will not install?

Tried to CONTACT Microsoft support but I GET a message saying that I have connection problems and I am not connect to the internet. Went to Norton online for HELP and I pretty much get the same message. Funny thing is I am online now. Not sure what to do.

CherylThe Windows diagnostics for XP tells me it cannot connect to the internet on HTTP - port 80, HTTPS - port 443 or FTP - port 21; adjust my FIREWALL settings to this. I cannot find this on Norton. I've found the firewall settings but don't see anything regarding the ports or the HTTP settings.

Solve : Recovery Console missing hal.dll?

Answer»

Just ran into a problem I haven't seen before. I run XP on my primary office system and have the Recovery Console installed as a boot option. It's been a while since I booted to the RC, but when I attempted to yesterday (to run a semiannual checkdisk) I got a message that the RC could not load because \system32\hal.dll is missing or damaged. However, the system boots just fine to Windows.

The file is, of course, there. But I compared it with the file on my slipstreamed SP3 cd and it is a different size and date. The date of the file on the hd (4/13/08) is the same as a bunch of other system files and the date of the file on the cd (4/14/08) is also the same as many other system files. The sizes are different (131kb vs 102kb) and, interestingly, the file on the hd is in all caps (HAL.DLL) - no other file in the folder is all caps. The boot.ini file appears to be correct in all aspects.

I reinstalled the RC with the same results.

I'm guessing that the RC is looking for the version on the cd, but I can't imagine how or when it was changed to the 4/13 copy and I'm hesitant to replace the version on the hd with the one on the cd because the only thing not working is the RC, and I can get there by booting to the CD and choosing the first repair option. The only thing different is that about 6 months ago I did some re-partitioning (added space to the system partition), but I've used the RC since that time. To the best of my knowledge there is nothing else new or different that should be causing this.

Normally I wouldn't even post this, but the week between Xmas and New Year Day is so slow on support forums I figured it might give us something to work on .

Thoughts? Thanks.Ok what to do is make a backup of the HAL.DLL file and then replace it with the CD copy and review results. I doubt it will have negative results but if it does you just us your back up.

As for why it happend am guessing it's corrupt as I have seen issues similiar to this in other computers Thanks, and of course I understand that is an option. More interested in how something like this happens. The file is not corrupt, it is simply a different version from what is on the cd.Quote from: Allan on December 30, 2010, 12:42:23 PM

Thanks, and of course I understand that is an option. More interested in how something like this happens. The file is not corrupt, it is simply a different version from what is on the cd.

The hal.dll is a kernel space file.

"The HAL implements a number of functions that are implemented in different ways by different hardware platforms, which in this context, refers mostly to the Chipset. Other components in the operating system can then call these functions in the same way on all platforms, without regard for the actual implementation. For example, responding to an interrupt is quite different on a machine with an APIC (Advanced PROGRAMMABLE Interrupt Controller) than on one without. The HAL abstracts such differences so that nothing outside the HAL need be concerned with them." (Wikipedia)

On x86 systems there are several different HAL files on the installation disk. The installer selects the RIGHT one for the hardware it finds. One is called "Hal.dll" and is the standard one, but there are a number of other Hal files which the installer may select, renaming to "Hal.dll". Thus the Hal.dll on your installed system may well differ from the file of that name on the install CD. On x86-64 and Itanium platforms there is just one possible Hal.dll for each CPU architecture.

Good post ST, thanks. On the Windows cd there is only one hal.dl_ file (and it's in the \i386 folder where you'd expect to FIND it). But still, it doesn't explain why the installed RC says hal.dll is not in \windows\system32 all of a sudden (keep in mind the RC worked fine a couple of months ago). I still think it is looking for the version on the cd, which was probably on the hd (or the RC wouldn't have worked before) but now is a different version. Hope that makes sense to you The "missing or corrupt hal.dll" message can be seen when there is actually no damage to that file. The cause can be a variety of things such as hard disk damage (especially boot sector), corrupted boot.ini file, filesystem corruption, or failed or bad Windows Update.
Yes, I understand. But remember that Windows boots just fine and I've verified the boot.ini is good. None of the usual EXPLANATIONS seem to apply in this case. Hey - if was easy I wouldn't have posted Did you do a chkdsk lately?
I did this morning. That's why I was trying to get into the RC. I used the CD instead.

Solve : deleting temp files?

Answer»

I would like to know if it is ok to delete documents and settings\administrator\local settings\temp files in hidden files. These files include some Windows temp files ,browser temp files and others. The total amount is about 450MB. I am unsure about deleting them because sometimes they show up in CCleaner to be deleted and sometimes they don't but it doesn't delete them even when it lists them as to be deleted. I've used CCleaner instead of Windows disc cleanup because I thought it did a better job but its never listed files and not deleted them as BEST as I can remember. I would like to delete them manually if it is safe to do so because I think they might be slowing down my computer but I'm concerned about them being in hidden files. ThanksDisk cleanup will delete them. It's safe to delete files in your temp folder(s). If you've recently installed new software just REBOOT one time because sometimes the installers place a file in the temp folder needed to complete the install after a reboot.I tried disc cleanup just to be sure and it didn't delete any local settings\temp files-sorry super Dave. CCleaner listed 442MB to be deleted so I ran it and it only deleted 0.31MB from local settings\temp - about 1 folder and 4 files. I checked the temp folder before and after CLEANING and you could see the gaps left by the deleted files. So I clicked analyze in CCleaner again and it said 0 bytes to be removed - I may get on their forum and get their explanation. Sorry but some files say it could damage the system to delete them. File examples I'm leary about - Lang ( contain DLL's) , MozUpdater (for Thunderbird ) , WER ( Dr. Watson ) , IMT.xml (Internet Explorer script files - a bunch ) , PCIUtil.dll and several SETUP files ( Win 2000 , VLC media player , etc.) . Still think deleting is OK ? Why is this temp folder hidden in the first place ? thanks again1) If they are in a temp folder you can delete them

2) If you're not sure, you can always move them to another folder you create, reboot, and see if there are any issues (there won't be)You might like 'Old Timer TFC': http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/tfc/

Solve : Are "System Restore" and "Automatic System Recovery" the same thing??

Answer»

Can someone explain the difference between the two?
How are they used, and when?

Thank you!What's the context please?

And no, they are different:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/818903

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/What-is-System-Restore

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306084My friend is getting messages that say her files are corrupted. So, she "googled" the phrase: "Corrupted on a computer". She was sent to Microsoft.com, and she read the information. It told her to do an "Automatic System Recovery" I don't know how to do that, she just learned how to get to "System Restore".
SO.....

We don't know how to solve the "Corrupt" files that she APPARENTLY has in her "JUNO" ISP programs.
She keeps reinstalling their CD, but keeps getting the message about corrupted files.
Does that help???What is the exact error message she is getting?I am waiting to HEAR from her, and will let you know. I wish I could convince her to just
come to your website, and be a part of the conversation. Thank you for your patience.I'll be honest with you. Speaking just for myself, my patience won't last long if your friend doesn't think it's worth her time to do this herself. Troubleshooting is tough enough when dealing with the sysop, twice as hard when dealing with an intermediary.Sorry. I got another email from her, and she says:
" This morning i CLICKED on "Start" to get to the Juno Platinum. Clicked on Juno Platinum and this msg came up (i wrote down this time),,,,,,,, "A copy of your Juno software has been corrupted.""

So, I just told her to contact Juno, her internet provider, and get them to solve it! I appreciate your time, and I appreciate your candor. I really do appreciate your experience and your willingness to help others solve problems with computing. From now on, the questions you get from me will be for my edification, and not my friend's. Thank you!

Solve : Recover deleted OE folder??

Answer»

Have a customer whose HUSBAND inadvertently deleted an important folder in outlook express and the program was set to empty deleted on exit xp.

Have all the dbx FILES on cd at my place need to get him out of the dog house.
Thanks!
Just for your info, the file "folders.dbx" in the user's "Store Folder" maps the actual folders visible in Outlook Express to the DBX files that hold the messages for each of those folders. Folders.dbx is automatically regenerated by OE if it is deleted, which is sometimes used as a fix for a corrupt folders.dbx file.

Each of the DBX database files represents a separate folder or sub-folder and contains all the messages in that folder.

DBX Files can be opened using OE-Mail Recovery utility
http://www.oemailrecovery.com/outlook-express-recovery.html

It is a STANDALONE program that opens the DBX file in a rough approximation of the OE message view and allows you to open emails, save attachments, and save out as many messages as you want to the *.eml format used by OE. You can drag and drop *.eml files from a folder into a newly created folder in OE again and they are then embedded into the DBX file created for your new folder.

You should be aware that the "Deleted Items.dbx" file normally still retains all deleted messages UNTIL it is "compacted". OE is set to prompt the user to compact database folders on the 100th time it is closed. The folder that was deleted from within OE may still be inside "Deleted Items.dbx", but probably only viewable as separate messages rather than as a separate folder containing messages, so your best bet is the DBX file you backed up.

Please also be aware that copying a DBX file from the Read-Only medium of a CD into the user's Message Store folder may issue errors when OE is opened. The Read-Only attribute has to be removed from the DBX files in the Store Folder.

To ASCERTAIN the User's Store Folder you open OE and use the Tools > Options > Maintenance tab, and click on the "Store Folder" button. It is set in the "Store Root" (REG_EXPAND_SZ) VALUE in the registry key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Identities\{GUID}\Software\Microsoft\Outlook Express\5.0
Also, I think that this information will be useful to you.
