Solve : Can XP be reinstalled if the original Reinstallation Disk has been lost??

Answer»

I have had several customers whose PCs are obviously in need of reinstallation of XP. Problem is, they have legitimate copies of XP on their machines, but have either lost, or never received, the Windows Reinstallation disk. Is there some way to get around this - I mean legally, of course. In almost every case, I can DETERMINE what the current XP product key is as installed on the machine, and XP has been validated thru the normal update process. Is it possible, or legal, to use ANOTHER legitimate COPY of XP to reinstall, and use the original product key for the previously installed copy of XP? It seems to me that I have heard of this being done - but I don't recall any of the mechanics of the reinstall. It can be done, so long as you use the product key from a COA - that is attached to the machine.

Plus you would need to use an OEM or volume license copy of XP - a retail version disc is tied with the product key so they may have issues further down the line with updates and validation tools.PCWizard:
Thanks for the reply. When you say OEM or volume license copy of XP, I assume you mean an XP disk issued by a boxmaker, such as Dell, Gateway, etc.; in other words, a disk NOT issued by Microsoft. Is that correct?

For some time, it has seemed to me that, so long as the user still has the original COA attached to the PC, and so long as the product key on that COA is legible, it should be possible to reinstall XP from another disk. Can you confirm that you have actually successfully REINSTALLED from a disk other than the original - but using the original product key code?

Thanks again.

Most industrial networks do. It's a lot cheaper to run windows xp as opposed to linux and a lot easier to manage. Plus, there's no control system software (like wonderware) that runs on linux. Quote
It's a lot cheaper to run windows xp as opposed to linux and a lot easier to manage
.

I can see where the Windows is actually easier to manage, but I'm curious: how's it cheaper? The fact that most hmi software is windows only means that if you were to go with linux software, you would have to pay a linux developer more per HOUR because there are fewer choices. Plus, most users are already accustomed to windows, which means there is little if any training required to bring them up to speed. If you throw linux into the mix, you have to include the PRICE of training all users that would be using it.
Also, the easier a piece of software is to manage, the cheaper it is to manage.OK, figures...the hidden costs of the non-standardized Linux!! So, the cheaper costs of licensing are more than offset by these other costs.

Solve : Unable to view open MS Word documents.?

Answer»

lauren,

Go into Word, Help, Detect and Repair....press Start...you may need the source disk to make repairs.

Be sure to backup..... Quote from: lauren316 on JULY 02, 2009, 06:58:46 AM

And, like I said in my original post, I am unable to right-click.
You said nothing about right-click in your original post? Why can't you right-click on the Word icon on your taskbar?

Have you ever used dual monitors with your Win XP COMPUTER? What happens if you TRY to open other Office components (Word, PowerPoint, etc.)?Yeah, I never saw (and still don't see) anything about not being able to right click. So why can't you right click?

Anyway, if your description is accurate and I understand your problem correctly, that's the way to fix it. I'll describe the keyboard method for the same thing. However, in this method you won't be able to see the menu that would normally come up when you right click the item on the task BAR. That's fine, just press the keys as described.

Ok, here's the keyboard method for doing the EXACT same thing:

1. Open Word

2. Press Alt+Space Bar then release

3. Press 'R'

4. Press Alt+Space Bar again and release, then press 'M'

5. With 'Move' activated press (one time) any arrow key.

6. Move your mouse. When you do so, the Word window should snap to the position of the mouse cursor.

7. Click anywhere to drop the window again. You should be able to maximize the window once more (right-click its taskbar icon, select 'Maximize'). It should maximize normally now.

Using these keyboard shortcuts again should accomplish the same thing.

Solve : Hard Drives won't defrag...?

Answer» I've used DisKeeper for years. Recently, it won't work properly. It gets to 40% complete and then stops. So I uninstalled it and tried windows defrag both from the "TOOLS" menu and from the "DISK MANAGEMENT" screen. Windows won't analyze or defrag. I hit the "ANALYZE" or "DEFRAG" buttons and nothing happens.

My sys is custom built, Core 2 Extreme x6800, 4 mb cache; Terabyte RAID 5 Boot drive (the RAID 5 contains 3 WD SATA2 500 gig drives controlled by an INTEL PCIe Raid 5 Card) and a secondary WD 320 gig SATA2 Drive. All drives are 7200 rpm.

Four gigs Crucial Ballistix DDR2 800 memory.

Sys is 2 years old & gets slower as time marches on.

I thought I would unistall DisKeeper and re-install & see if that fixed the problem. Haven't re-installed DK yet but was surprised Windows defreg wouldn't work either. (When DK is installed, Windows Defrag is unoperable. If you try to use Windows defrag, DK starts up. This has always been the case. Thanks for any help...
What did you do before the problem? (downloads, installs, hardware changes, ect....)

I suggest downloading JKDefrag and see if it can analyze your drive:
http://www.snapfiles.com/reviews/JkDefrag/JkDefrag.htmlDisKeeper replaces the defrag component built into Windows...
Did you say you re-installed it and it still would not run ? ?
GO to Start/Run and type in sfc /scannow and hit Enter.
Have your Windows CD handy as it will ask for it.
Let it finish and re-boot... Quote from: patio on September 30, 2008, 05:41:57 AM
DisKeeper replaces the defrag component built into Windows...
Oh yes, I forgot about that. (I have diskeeper on ONE of my machines)No... I haven't re-installed DK yet. But I'll do so and see what happens.
After I un-installed DK, I thought the Windows DeFrag would work & when it did not I thought I had other possible problems.

Thanks...

Gar...Two things come to mind.....

1. Any Defrag requires a considerable amount of HD space to move files around.
Lacking sufficient space.....defrag will bomb out.

2. NO Defrag will run (correctly) if there are errors in the data structure on the HD.

I'd recommend removing every file from the HD that you don't need. Then run
CHKDSK /r to repair any errors on the drive.
If you don't know how to thoroughly clean your HD, PM me for specific information on how to perform that task.

For SAFETY, STOP using third party defrag programs. The safest Defrag program that you can use is the one that came built into Windows.

I was very disappointed in the Windows XP defrag, in that it wouldn't compress the data area like the Windows 98 and ME Defrag did.

I got around that minor dissappointement by doing a Ghost backup to my second drive and then immediately doing a Ghost Restore, which re-writes the entire data area, with NO spaces and NO fragmentation.
My hard drive then looks like this to Windows Defrag Analysis.

That beats the crap out of any so-called defrag program.

You won't get that kind of re-organization of a HD from any program that I'm aware of.
A while back I mistakenly tried a HD Defrag program called the "Defraggler" or some such.
It screwed up my HD so bad that even a Ghost restore couldn't fix it. That's the last time I'll ever try a third party defrag program.

Good Luck,
The Shadow I have found both Windows Defrag, JKDefrag, Defraggler, Auglostics and IOBit Defrag and none of them have had any problems.

Solve : excel question.?

Answer»

suppose if I have a list of name and I want to know how MANY of the names contain less than 5 character. How do I do it?
The "len" function returns the NUMBER of characters in a text string.

So suppose you had the names in cells A1 to A50.

In CELL B1, PUT =len(A1).

Copy/paste that down the B column.

Then USE =countif(B1:B50,"<5") in the next cell.

Or did you want <= 5, I forget. If you wanted that, use <= 5 (or < 6).

Solve : system can't shut down?

Answer»

hi friends,

today, I have installed crystal XP along with windows XP installed already. after installation what i got, system is not getting shutdown but restart again whenever I try to shut it down.
this issue started after installation of Crystal XP, I tried after uninstalling it though but the PROBLEM still persist.

any suggestion?System Restore?even system restore is not working.

when I tried to restore it at previous restore point when it was working fine, system restarted and I got error saying

system restore incomplete

I tried other restore points with failure.

even windows could not be started in safe mode. when I tried so, I saw number of .sys files enlisted on a black screen seemed like there may be problems on .sys files(not sure though).

any guess?I assume, you can work in Normal Mode...

If so, GO Start>Run, type in:
sfc /scannow
Click OK.
Have Windows CD handy.

If that doesn't work, try Windows repair: http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htmThis is a great example of reasons to shy away from "eye candy" programs written for Windows...
Most CHANGE system files; are written poorly and or hurt system performance.

Solve : [Resolved] XP partition lost, can it be recovered??

Answer»

I've been playing "FUN with partitions" and I think I'm in over my head. Can I recover my XP partition and if so how would I go about it?

Situation:
I have two physical disks. On my SATA drive I installed Windows XP. After that, I installed Ubuntu 8.04 on an old IDE drive. Next, I installed the first Win7 beta, also on the IDE drive. I then re-installed Ubuntu to repair GRUB.

Up to this point, everything is working fine. Through GRUB I can choose Ubuntu or Windows bootloader, and if I choose Windows, I have the option of Windows 7 or Older Windows (XP).

As you know the WIN7 beta is ending, so I installed WIN7 RC1 in the same spot, erasing the partition I was using for WIN7. In order to do this, I had to physically disconnect the SATA drive to avoid an error I was getting during install. The SATA drive is now reconnected.

At this time I can boot into WIN7 or Ubuntu, but XP is absent. If I physically disconnect the IDE drive, I get a GRUB error (error 22) and am forced to restart. Looking back, I could have predicted an issue with this latest change, but it's done now. I'm mostly interested in this as a learning experience at this point. All OS's are 64-bit.

Options, explanations and constructive scoldings are welcome.
Thanks!

[Resolution:] Using the XP install CD, I chose the repair option which takes you to a command line. Typing 'help' displays the list of commands. I chose FIXBOOT which did not seem to affect anything and rebooted. No change. I repeated the repair process, but chose this time fixmbr. I was given warnings that I may lose all data and partitions on the disk, but agreed. Again there was no immediate effect. On reboot, I was greeted with my Windows XP load screen and now I have a working XP partition. Thanks to Patio for a great answer. I would SIMPLY USE the BIOS to switch between which drive i wanted to boot to....
Simple and clean.

If this solution does not work then you will have to boot to the XP CD and choose R in the first screen to enter the Recovery Console.
This will load a command prompt screen...at the prompt type fixboot and hit Enter...
Remove the CD and re-boot.
If this does not work repeat the above except this time type fixmbr and hit Enter...
Again remove the CD and re-boot...
Keep us posted.Resolved
Patio, that is exactly the right answer. After repairing the XP installation using first fixboot with no discernible effect and then fixmbr I have my XP again! Now I can change the boot order to get the OS I want as you suggested. Thanks!

Solve : Safe Mode Doesn't Show?

Answer»

I recently installed a new LCD in my laptop. The screen works perfect but there is one thing I was WORRIED about, and thats that if any HARDWARE got damaged at the time were i dropped my laptop. This is what happens. My computer starts up and I let it run, taking LONGER then normal (5 minutes) to get to the login screen. When i log in my hard drive light is a solid color and I can see its trying to boot, idk if its because something else is mest up or because the fall was to hard for it. At this point It took up to 7-8 minutes for it to just show my dekstop background (no icons, nothing but the background.) I then got a message after waiting saying my account has been corrupted. I then just thought i would go into safe mode, create a new name and transfer my files over. I then realised that I couldn't get into safe mode, i had the option to get into my cd drive or hdd drive or go to other options that don't have anything to do with boot up options. I tried loading the hard drive boot-up and wated for the option to go into boot menues and it never came. Any ideas? MUCH APPRECIATED!If the laptop was dropped this is what i would do in this order:

Remove the HDD access panel and remove / reseat the HDD...

Re-boot and run the HDD FREE diagnostics from the drive manuf. site...

Run chkdsk /r from either a command prompt and or Programs/Accessories/System Tools...

Then go to Start/Run and type in sfc /scannow and hit Enter...
Have your Windows CD handy as it will ask for it...is the hdd access hardware or is it in the software?nvm lol hard drive disk...duh . Great my one nail is stripped, this should be fun...Just be careful...take your time and you should do fine...

The garbage collection is an automatic memory management scheme employed by the .net framework is called garbage collection. The garbage collector is continuously tracing out of scope objects and identify that no longer have references.

Dhananjay, can you please explain your problem in more detail? Also, look here before posting.

well thank goodness he cleared up the difference between REFERENCE counting and garbage collection. I for one missed the million or so mentions of the differences in the documentation, so it's a good thing I found this post that has almost nothing to do with windows (Java has garbage collection to, and it RUNS on a lot of OS systems), and should have rather have been placed in the Programming forum- to be met with the same type of confusion.I believe the original poster is just WANTING to verify that if he does nothing with the objects no longer being used, the "garbage collector" will remove them for him.

Let's see how he responds... Quote from: Aegis on September 27, 2008, 12:32:17 AM

Well, I'll tell him this then- they don't call it a garbage collector for leaking memory!

Solve : Jumpy mouse?

Answer»

In the past couple days, I have noticed that my computer seems to be bogging down somewhat.

The mouse locks in one place for a few seconds at a time.

The computer is fairly new. It's a Gateway w/AMD 64X2 dual processor, 3MB RAM.

I'm not doing anything fancy with this machine...it's just for internet usage. My wife has A TON of pictures stored on it...but the HD is nowhere near 1/2 full. The computer has internet connection through satellite.

Any help/diagnosis would be greatly appreciated. What kind of mouse is it?
Did you try another mouse?Does this mouse-lagging problem happen whether or not you are online? One other thing maybe worth checking - is your CPU bogged down?

Go to -->start-run-taskmgr - and take a peek at your CPU activity. I'll bet jerky mouse could well coincide with very high CPU USEAGE.

If that does happen to be the case then time to start seeing what process or processes are hogging the CPU. Does it happen when perhaps browser gets close to a lock up - I have noticed at times IE and even Firefox, can get part locked and CPU useage goes way too high.It seems to happen when I'm on the net. I can't believe the SYSTEM is magically bogged down basically overnight.

I checked the task manager, and there are a LOT of things that SHOW up under processes and cpu...but I don't know how to tell what is doing what.

UPDATE: A program called SPARE BACKUP...which came in the PC is running more than IE when I'm on the net. Is this normal?
Try going to Start --> RUN --> type msconfig and press Enter
When you get to msconfig, click the Startup Tab and uncheck as many programs as you can (except antivirus software)
Click OK and restart your computer. Quote

Look at the CPU column. What process is the main taker? What percentage? From Broni:

Solve : Packard Bell Laptop?

My laptop CRASHED and having rebooted it I have a message SAYING that the HARD drive is disabled. How do you enable it or do I need to take it to a professional? What is the exact message, and at what point of BOOTING does it pop-up?Booting is not completing. When looking in BIOS it says that the hard drive is disabled. I have not touched anything in BIOS as I do not know what to do. Does this help your question. I am a complete beginner with regard to maintenance.Go into Bios and enable your hard driveMight be a silly question but what do I do in BIOS. I know it sounds as if I am THICK (I am when it comes to maintenance of computers) What do I click on? I dont mind if you want to laugh at how thick I am!!!I don't think, there is an option in BIOS to enable hard drive.
Try to reset BIOS to defaults.Thank will try this and will let you know what happens.

Solve : Cant update using WSUS?

Answer»

I have WSUS installed on a Server 2008 64 bit server. The clients are Windows XP.
Every time I try to update Windows XP, I get ERRORS in the WindowsUpdate.log file.
Here are some of what I have tried:
I have deleted the WindowsUpdate.log file and let Windows regenerate a new one.
I have deleted all the files under C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution
I have used the wuauclt.exe /resetauthorization /detectnow command.
I have removed the entry of the computer on WSUS server. Once the computer shows up on the server, It gets a YELLOW triangle with an exclamation point and says it has not yet reported.

Here is a copy of my WindowsUpdate.lof file:

Solve : Websites open in notepad?

Answer»

Hi,

I am trying to fix my grandmothers computer, which has a couple strange problems.

First of all, a few programs will not even start. I cannot use Internet Explorer or the "Help and Support" functionality PROVIDED with XP.

Second, she actually primarily uses AOL, which does open. However, when I try to go to any website, or even when it starts up I get all types of code opening in notepad - PHP, JSP, HTML, it all opens in notepad instead of opening within the browser.

I tried doing a system restore, but cannot because I cannot open the "Help and Support" window. Selecting it does nothing.

So next to fix the ISSUE with webpages opening up in notepad I created a html file and made SURE that it is set to open with AOL. This didn't help.

From here I brought over AVG Anti-Virus and Malwarebytes. I installed both on her computer and while Malwarebytes found plenty of malware, removing it did not fix any of the problems. Currently AVG is running, I left her place while it runs to go back home and ask you all for advice.

So is there any advice? I'd rather not have to make my grandma go pay for a new copy of windows just so I can format the HD and install windows.Support for the view-source protocol was removed in SERVICE pack 2 for Windows XP and therefore notepad popups no longer work on computers running service pack 2. So have you got SP2?Try going:

Start->Control Panel, Add/Remove programs. Select "Set Program Access and Defaults" on the left. Use Custom to reset your browser to Internet explorer.

Barring that helping, try Start->All Programs->Accessories->System Tools->System Restore (no need to open help & support).

that answers that. a more relevant question would be what it has to do with the issue. It was my original understanding that it was a security issue, spamming etc. Where you try to open a website and it just opens the source onto a notepad. But as always I bow to your superior knowledge BC. true- but in this case it likely is an association issue; the viewsource protocol is IE specific (which would apply here) but also depends on a link using it somewhere. Although they've tried to fix the HTML association it's possible that SOMEHOW notepad has been set as the default browser- in which case reassigning the defaults should do the trick. That makes more sense.

Solve : Office Setup Says system DLL relocated!?

Answer»

The system DLL user32.dll was relocated in memory. The application will not run properly. The relocation occurred because the DLL C:\Windows\system32\SHELL32.DLL occupied an address range for Windows system DLLs. The vendor supplying the DLL should be contacted for a new DLL.

P.S.
Need help by tomorrow. Need to install Office for ASSIGNMENT.Based off what I've read in the below link to a Microsoft KB that seems to relate to your issue I'd suggest the below suggestions.

  • Make sure you have all Microsoft updates on the computer - VISIT http://update.microsoft.com
  • Uninstall BricoPack Vista Inspirat (through add/remove programs) if present
  • Uninstall any themes/transformation pack, crystalxp, etc.

Microsoft KB link:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/935448/en-us

What assignment are you going to be doing?

You MIGHT be able to get Open Office from http://www.openoffice.org/ --> It's a freeware. It should be able to HANDLE all the major file types that Microsoft Office. At least, if you don't get Microsoft Office installed, maybe you can get the assignment done with Open Office and then come back to fix Microsoft Office!

Solve : Bleeping noise coming from inside my computer ??

Answer»

Hi I'm new here, looked every were for help but didn't get any
I have a desk top (duel BIOS) but a few months ago a bleeping noise started.
it wasn't very often but now it happens so much. When ever the sound starts I check the event viewer but found nothing there when the sound happend. a few weeks ago my McAfee started giving me a warning" A buffer overflow was detected on your computer" the sound started and my computer gave a blue screen telling me restart and remove any new installed program. this was fixed by installing Malwarebytes and scanning the mesage from mcAfee stopped coming as the scan removed some bad Trojans. I though the sound was gone then too, but now if I scan a full scan with McAfee or if I install, remove some thing from my computer the sound starts then stops when the application is over. the sound also comes if only the browser is on for a while with nothing else. the bleeping noise also starts if I'm printing a LOAD of PAPERS and stops as its done printing. when a tried working on a POSTER the noise kept coming if I move a text box with a lot of writing of picture's in it. this sound can't be heard through the headphones or monitor speakers but from inside the computer. the sound is the same sound that comes after 1 sec of turning on my computer. . oh my copmuter had a problem with windows so I had to do recovery to get every thing back but it was OK then for months TELL this bleeping noise started.please help with my problem I don't have the time to format the computer and start over as I'm in my graduating year and have researches to finish THERMAL threshold met can cause the beeping...if the CPU is running TOO HOT the onboard temp sensor will start to beep. Is the heatsink for the CPU packed with dust and clogged are all fans running properly?

You might have a setting in the BIOS to set the level at which to start beeping if too hot and the system shutdown if a higher temp is reached. Some bios's have the ability to change the values to make it less or more sensitive to heat alerts. Others will beep but wont give you any info.

You can also install and run speedfan to see the system temps and report them back here.

I used speed fan and looks like your right , I have a set of three temp 25c, 25c and 60c the last reaches 60c with a picture of flame next to it when scanning because the cpu usage was about 82% , there is also a HD0 wich is 41c and another temp 1 odf 22c. I have three fans identified with a speed of 2377, 0, 2637 RPM respectivly. so does this mean than fan 2 caused temp 3 to rise to 60c or temp 1 is for fan 1 and so on. hoow can i know wich fan to fix they all look like they are working?Thermal Paste Guide

Please read it thoroughly as too much is also as bad as not enough...
Report back with your new temps...
You may need to add another case fan which we can assist with.Thank you all very much,
I cleaned the fans and they are running faster than before, I also added an extra fan( dad fixed it). the temps are now 22c as lowest and 40c as highest. I over loaded my computer with work to see if the noise would come but it didn't as the temp doesn't reach near 60c . no more bleeping . thank you for your help I would have lost hope if not for you.
I can now work on my research peacefully Excellent....

Solve : Reservable bandwidth?

Answer»

I am using windows XP. I have CHANGED the system reservable bandwidth from 20% to 0 (zero)%. Is it harmful for computer?Unless you have a very slow internet connection then you should PUT that setting BACK. Unless you use something other than Windows Update.

On something other than a slow connection you will NEVER notice the difference.CHANGING the system reservable bandwidth setting to improve network performance is apparently a myth. Check this page out for more information. Changing that setting only affects system bandwidth in very specific circumstances.

Solve : trying to fix my computer myself dvd drive help.?

Answer»

well i built a computer last summer and everything was ok with it except for that there was no sound even though i installed a sound card into it. i ignored this until today when i tried to fix it by taking apart the computer and replacing the card into the motherboard and restarting the computer. i did this easily but by taking the card out and putting it back in i needed to take out the dvd drive thing that connects it to the motherboard. Upon restarting the computer i found that my sound works but now the dvd drive isnt showing up and does not play any cds. i then proceeded to take it apart again and seeing if i can get it to work by doing what i did to the sound card. after multiple TRIES i havent been able to get the drive to show up or run anything on the computer. and after the last restart my sound is no long present.

is there anyway i can fix these problems without taking it in to professional help? a way to get my dvd drive to show up and work again and keep the audio working. thanks.what type of DVD drive is it? Does it use a wide ribbon cable to attach it to the motherboard or does it use a narrow cable?wide ribbonrestart the computer, and as soon as the BIOS version appears on the screen, press either F1, or F2 to enter CMOS.............Look carefully in CMOS, does the DVD drive show up?it could be differnt keys but the start up menu would tell youCheck the EIDE(ribbon) cable, make sure that you put the red STRIPED side towards pin one on the EIDE controller. Pin one can usually be identified by a little tiny triangle beside the connector on the mother board.

Also check the EIDE cable on the back of the DVD drive, it may have come loose. If it has make sure that the red striped end is closest to the Molex(power) connection. Quote from: Quantos on June 30, 2009, 06:34:30 PM

the EIDE controllers and connectors are keyed so that you cannot place the cable on incorrectly....but I'm sure you knew that...

Are there any EIDE cables that exist that aren't keyed? Quote

Not always, there are some that don't have the keys.so what's the deal dapoch? does the drive show up in CMOS?im not exactly sure how to get that CMOS thing but i did look there the menus when i went to the BIOS version like you said to do and the only thing i found that had something with the dvd/cd drive was in the boot menu and it said there was no drive. so im thinking it didnt show up.

and i took the replaced the ribbon again and i replaced the sound card and i eventually got the sound back...but sadly no dvd drive.could be the ide cable TRY replaceing it. Should just see it then. There are a good few that I seen more useful with older models that are keyed differntly there is a pin missing notch in the bottom of the cable in todays but in these there all there. Also the FEEDING noth isnt on there simple REASON the 486 an other machines like it some times had an expansion card for the hard drive an was nothing but pins straight up from the card.

Solve : Really weird problems with XP boot up.?

Answer»

I got a mystery that I can't figure it out. My friend has a TOSHIBA Satellite m35x s311. And yes, I know, really old . Anyway, the system boots up just fine while under power of the battery OR under the power of the plug(while the battery is out). If the battery is in, and the laptop is plugged into the wall it doesn't WANT to boot into XP and GIVES the blue screen. The antivirus says that there isn't a virus, and I have already GONE through Recovery/Repair to repair the boot sector. ANYONE have any ideas?

Thanks

Specs:

http://reviews.cnet.com/laptops/toshiba-satellite-m35x-s311/4507-3121_7-31288755.html?tag=mncol;psum

I would list the the specs, but I figured this link would be nicer. It's probably the circuit that controls the charging of the battery. How does the laptop behave if you start it and then put the battery into it?

Solve : unmountable_boot _volume?

Answer»

hi everyone i have a serious problem see i have a dell desktop windows xp. i put norton 360 on it and it INSTALLED and everything but once i rebooted it... it said unmountable_boot _volume i tried safe mode same thing. i have files on there thats really important. AND i dont have the xp disks that came with the pc. is there a way to fix this without deleteing my files on hard drive. please someone help me im desperate right now. and im using my laptop right now so i cant make a bootable floopy disk. is there a way to save my files from being permanently deleted? If you have Windows CD...(if you don't have Windows CD, scroll down)

1. Insert your Windows XP CD into your CD and assure that your CD-ROM drive is capable of booting the CD.
2. Once you have booted from CD, do NOT select the option that states: Press F2 to initiate the Automated System Recovery (ASR) TOOL.
You’re going to proceed until you see the following screen, at which point you will press the “R” key to enter the recovery console:

3. After you have selected the appropriate option from step two, you will be prompted to select a valid Windows installation (typically number “1″).
Select the installation number, and hit Enter.
If there is an administrator password for the administrator account, enter it and hit Enter (if asked for the password, and you don't know it, you're out of luck).
You will be greeted with this screen, which indicates a recovery console at the ready:

4. There are eight commands you must enter in SEQUENCE to repair your problem..
I will introduce them here, and then show the results graphically in the next six steps.
NOTE. Make sure, you press Enter after each command. Make sure, all commands are exact, including "spaces".
These commands are as follows:

CD..
ATTRIB -H C:\\boot.ini
ATTRIB -S C:\\boot.ini
ATTRIB -R C:\\boot.ini
del boot.ini
BOOTCFG /Rebuild

Note about the above command.
BOOTCFG /REBUILD command which searches for pre-existing installations of Windows XP and rebuilds sundry essential components of the Windows operating system, recompiles the BOOT.INI file and corrects a litany of common Windows errors.
It is very important that you do one or both of the following two things:
A.) Every Windows XP OWNER must use /FASTDETECT as OS Load Option when the rebuild process is finalizing.
B.) If you are the owner of a CPU featuring Intel’s XD or AMD’s NX buffer overflow protection, you must also use /NOEXECUTE=OPTIN as an OS Load Option.
For the Enter Load Identifier portion of this command, you should enter the name of the operating system you have installed.
If, for example, you are using Windows XP Home, you could type Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition for the identifier (it's not crucial, HOWEVER what the name is, as long, as it's meaningful).
Here is your computer screen:

5. Following command verifies the integrity of the hard drive containing the Windows XP installation. While this step is not an essential function in our process, it’s still good to be sure that the drive is physically capable of running windows, in that it contains no bad sectors or other corruptions that might be the culprit:

CHKDSK /R

6. This last command writes a new boot sector to the hard drive and cleans up all the loose ends we created by rebuilding the BOOT.INI file and the system files. When the Windows Recovery Console asks you if you are Sure you want to write a new bootsector to the partition C: ? just hit “Y”, then Enter to confirm your decision:

FIXBOOT

7. It’s time to reboot your PC by typing
EXIT
and pressing Enter.

With any luck, your PC will boot successfully into Windows XP as if your various DLL, Hive, EXE and NTLDR errors never existed.

If you don't have Windows CD...
Download Windows Recovery Console: http://www.thecomputerparamedic.com/files/rc.iso
Download, and install free Imgburn: http://www.imgburn.com/index.php?act=download
Using Imgburn, burn rc.iso to a CD.
Boot to the CD...let it finish loading.
When the "Welcome to Setup" screen appears, press R to start the Recovery Console.
Then, follow instructions from Step #3 above.

Solve : LINKSYS Wireless-G USB Network Adapter ????

Answer»

Hi Guys,

I recently got a new netbook. (Samsung NC10) It runs with XP and has 160GB with 1GB of Ram. WI-FI & Bluetooth too.

My original question was going to be HOW CAN I CONNECT TO UNSECURED WI-FI CONNECTIONS WHILE I AM OUT ON THE ROAD. (I always see the many available unsecured networks but never seem to connect to any of them. Ok, so..... Instead of bothering you guys, I googled my question and read about Wi-Fi Dongle Boosters. (Good to know there is such a thing)

Anyway, I also saw something called a USB Network Adapter and realized I had this in a bag under my desk. (It had belonged to my ex) It kinda LOOKS like a mini version of my Linksys Wireless Router. Here is the Link:
http://www.linksysbycisco.com/US/en/products/WUSB54G

Can someone tell me what this is? Also, will it boost me signal to my netbook when I am out so I can pick-up those 'unsecured' connections?
You "SHOULD" just e able to use your new laptop to get a signal and connect to the internet. I do it all the time with a HP Dav2000. My SISTERS house, my girlfriends house coffee shops sometimes at work no matter where I am I just see a list of available connections click and presto!

Do you receive an error message?

You may see someones router that has no internet hooked up to it?

Weak signal?

Do you have the internal settings set correctly.

The 54G is an Adaptor which talks to the router and lets your laptop communicate through that router with the internet. My daughter had one years ago when I put the wireless in my house. You don't need that. Your laptop should be self sufficient.

It "SOUNDS" like it should be a very simple fix. Hi there,

I am not at all technichal so go easy on me. This is my 1st netbook/laptop and I am googling many things to tweek my new toy to the WAY I like it.

Let me first say that I get connection at home, no problem. Strength is strong. I am looking to pick up unsecured networks while I am out.

Ummm, I get an OptimumOnline connection when I am local (in the car) because it is my home service provider. They have send up many satellites for subscribers to pick up for free. When I go (in the car) out of my 'range' for Optimum and try to log on to my netbook, I see a little icon by my clock that states I do not have a connection. It says to click on the icon for a list of available connections. I do so and see many unsecured connections and usually choose the one with the most 'bars' filled in GREEN. (Meanng, the strongest connection) From there, the box just scans and scans and scans but never connects. It drives me crazy. (I don't get an error message)

I have no clue if I have internal settings set correctly. (Probably is set to whatever is came with)

Is there a way to get connection to these unsecured networks when I am out & about? What am I doing WRONG??
Sounds like you are doing evrythign exactly the way I do. I am no EXPERT lol.
When you view the links avail click on properties and see if everything looks right there.
There should be no wep or passwords to put in etc etc. I acn't see you running inot that many routers not connected to a carrier? Though it happens.

You have Optimun online? lol Hmmmm, where would I see/find the properties? How would I know if everything was alright there? LOL!! In case I have you fooled, I am very pc un-savey!!

Fill me in.....why the chuckle with Optimum?

Dee

No chuckle. Only connection I can get at work but I can't get in.

When you look at the list of avail connections, on mine anyway, in the lower right you should see properties. Just take a peek you may know more then you think. Remember you need no password no encryption etc etc.

Solve : laptop screen size?

Answer»

I'm not sure if this is the right place to be posting this question, but here goes.

i have an acer aspire laptop (its about 4-5 years old already) and when I use my function key to supply feed to a VGA source (ie projector or TV) my screen size increases. I have the same resolution but the DESKTOP doesn't fit on my screen and my icons are a jumbled. I can change the resolution to fix the problem, but when I switch BACK to just my laptop screen the screen goes back to normal size making everything way too small again.

Is there a way to fix this? or perhaps is there another way to HOOK up a second screen or SOMETHING without using my function keys to ACTIVATE it?

thanks.Have a look at setting up dual monitors, instead of mirroring your display onto the second screen.

Solve : Screen resolution is at 800x600 and color quality is 4-bit. RESOLVED?

Answer»

I have Microsoft Windows XP Professional, 2002 version, SP2
76487-OEM-0067582-34890
I have an AMD Athlon(tm) Processor 1.30 GHz, 256MB RAM (I know, horrible, my company will not upgrade)
My "Display Adapter" is an NVIDIA RIVA TNT2 Model 64/Model 64 Pro.

When I left work last night I turned off my computer as usual. I do not know if anyone turned it back on and used it after I left, no one is admitting to it if they did. When I turned the computer on this morning, the resolution was down to 800x600 with 4-bit color quality. I have no option to increase either of these settings. Also, a baloon popped up in the lower right hand corner of the screen telling me that my color settings were at the lowest. I clicked the balloon and I got a window asking if I wanted Windows to automatically fix the color problem. I said yes, and NOTHING changed. I restarted the computer, still nothing. I have not INSTALLED or removed any programs or hardware. Can anyone help?
What does it look like in Device Manager? Are there any errors?

START>right click "my computer">properties>hardware tab>device manager

Do you SEE any yellow exclamation marks anywhere?

If not, you might try updating the display driver anyway?

Click on the "+" sign next to "display adapters", then right click on the item in the submenu, and then click "update" to see if Windows will update it......Thank you for replying!

There are no exclamation points in the device manager.
I attempted to update my display adapter, but it stopped and I got this message:

"The wizard could not find a better match for your hardware than the software you currently have installed."What if you try to do system restore? As you have said, you don't know if someone had used your computer..

Or you could reinstall your videocard. In the device Manager, Right click on the Display Adapter icon then choose uninstall. Then restart Windows and it will ask again for the card's drivers..THANKS Jerry.
Forgive my ignorance, but what is system restore, and how do I do it?

Click Start > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore
Read this for full instructions:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/systemrestore.mspx

Good Luck!
Jerry, you are my hero for the day!

I WENT to system restore, but it didn't find anything. So I uninstalled the NVIDIA RIVA "display adapter" and viola! I'm back in the 21st century! Thanks everyone for all of your help, I will definitely recommend you and I'll come back myself if I run into any more problems!

Solve : Privacy question?

Answer»

I need some work done on my computer, can the person working on it find out my passwords or PRIVATE information?Yes.Or to be a little more COMPREHENSIVE: it depends.

Someone working on a computer having adminstrative access may have the tools to discover all Windows, Firefox, Internet Explorer, WORD, Excel, Access and ZIP passwords. If an encryption tool such as >TrueCrypt< is used to protect files, with a strong password, this would be virtually impossible for anyone to CRACK.

Solve : No DVD sound in Windows Media Player?

Answer»

I'm not getting any sound when PLAYING DVDs with Windows MEDIA Player. I've also tried two other DVD players and no sound there either. I can play an audio CD with Windows Media Player, and sound is fine in games, event sounds, etc. but for some odd reason I don't GET any sound when playing DVD movies. I've SEARCHED through all the entries here and at "Ask Dave" and everything checks out fine. I've reinstalled the latest driver 3 times on my HT Omega Striker, I've checked all the WMP settings, device settings, Windows device settings, driver is enabled, directx is updated, everything -- still no sound for DVDs in Windows XP. When I boot to my Windows 7 partition everything works fine, but not in my main Windows XP partition. Any ideas?http://www.codecguide.com/download_kl.htmThat fixed it, thanks very much. I had a suspicion it might be a codec but didn't know where to check or where to get them. I had Windows Media Player set to download codecs automatically but it wasn't working. During codec installation it did find one broken codec (registry entry but no file). Maybe that had something to do with it.

Thanks again.You're very welcome

Solve : Get dsl or cable BB before calling me!?

Answer»

As resident(free) computer expert, I'm sure you have been asked for help from less tech-savvy relatives and friends. What do you tell people with 56k dialup, who will not spend the money for dsl or cable broadband? I hate to do it, but I say "sorry, I don't help people without dsl or cable broadband. Modern pc and mac systems CANNOT be updated properly at 56k. The hours-long downloads usually fail midstream, or users shutdown midstream. Call me back when you have dsl or cable, or let me help you get it." Why waste my time when their system requires hours-long update downloads before a fix is possible? And don't tell me to bring their box home and update it on my broadband connection. This is a poor shorterm solution. I have told too many of these people "don't shut down your computer while it is updating." I'm sure they shutdown anyway, not realizing it is updating or wanting to "save electricity". Sorry if this is not the appropriate forum. It has most activity. Why not just charged them if they want you to take home their computer to be updated? I think its just reasonable. Or maybe you could burn them an installer disk with all the upgrades that their computer needs..

I just help as a favor and never charge. Do you realize how much TROUBLE that is to diagnose problem, figure what updates they need and burn relevant updates on a cd? Automatic updates is the only practical way unless you live in the same house. Only automatic updates knows what the critical updates are. I'm inclined to agree with you, unless they actually have no broadband options in their area, which is still the case in some rural areas. I went through this scenario with my mother. She was on dialup from DEC. 1999, when she first started using a computer, until about 6 months ago when I persuaded her to get DSL. Actually, for the first 6 years or so, dialup was her only option; neither DSL or Cable were available in the rural area where she lived. Then, she moved to a small town about 6 miles from her previous residence. I did some research and found that she could get DSL but would have to switch telephone service providers, which I persuaded her to do. She subsribed to the basic DSL service which is 768 Kbps download, but that's still about 15 times faster than dialup and the cost is about the same as her former dialup service.Maybe these people don't want to pay, or can't afford to pay the ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS rates the rest of us pay for the dubious privilege of streaming video, audio, and (agreed) faster download of large file content.

Even if money is not an issue for them, it's their choice of how to spend it. It is also your choice to help whom you will.

For the price of a portable drive, you could be a local hero for these folks.

Well, just tell them that in the long run it will be beneficial for them. Just as whatt SOYBEAN did, try to do some research for them with regards to rates of DSL providers in their place.

one of its client say (client"A") has hp 1010 printer installed and is on sharing so that all other client's can have print.

All of sudden some thing has gone wrong or someone has did some trick. at present only (client "b") is not able to print, WHEREAS all other client are able to print.

i tried username of client b on client c,d,e too. but username of client b cannot print,

Have you tried removing an REINSTALLING the relevant print drivers for client "B"? What OPERATING system is on client B's computer?

Solve : I installed xp home on top of xp professional - now having some problems?

Answer»

i didn't really know how to title this post! lol!
I'm worried that my questions will sound ridiculous, since I have limited COMPUTER knowledge, so please bear with me!

I have a dell dimension 8400 with xp professional

Today,I tried to boot up the computer and got an error that said *unmountable_boot_volume

I tried pushing f-12 and running a hard drive diagnostic, but it failed
(it said fail-return code 7)
I tried clicking the one that said "boot to utility partition, but it said "missing loader"

I lost the windows xp professional disc that came with the computer (this is an old comp) but I did find a windows xp home edition disc that came with one of our other computers, so I tried booting from that and ended up installing it over top of the xp professional.

It worked...I can see my old files on the c drive under program files, but I can't access them.
Is there any way to access them or even delete them so I can reinstall what I want/need? I tried using the add/remove programs, but none of the old files show up on it.
boy, you've got quite a mess on your hands

Since you got the XP installation disk from another computer that already used it, in which the license key has already been used, the copy of XP that you installed is not legal.

Even if you can get your files off the hard drive, you won't be able to continue using Windows XP Home edition........

AT this point I would suggest taking the hard drive out of your computer and adding it as a slave drive to another computer.......once the drive is added, you can probably get the files that you need, off the drive....

AS far as putting another operating system back on your computer, I would first find a new economical hard drive, since the one you currently have is failing, and then call Microsoft, give them the License Key for the Version of XP Professional, and see if they will send you another copy of the XP professional CD Quote from: blockHEAD on June 29, 2009, 03:57:18 PM

Oh no! I didn't mean to do anything inappropriate! My dh just reminded me that the xp home was a copy we had purchased for our old computer...it had originally come with windows ME. That comps no longer working,so I hope its ok to have used that!
But I'll definitely see if Dell can send me a replacement copy of xp home.
I guess it looks like I'll have to get a new hard drive. Are they easy to install for a newbie or is that something I should probably get help with? Quote from: webbeccjo on June 29, 2009, 04:24:12 PM

you mean, XP Professional ?

With respect to the disk that you lost, was it the disk that came with the computer when it was purchased?

Hard drives are quite easy to install......but before you get another hard drive boot up your computer, go into "my computer", right click on the "C" drive, click properties, click on the "tools" tab, and under where it says "error checking" click on "check now".......make sure that both "check disk" options are checked and click OK....

It will take a while for the scan to complete so be patient. If it finds bad sectors that it cannot repair, you will need to get another hard drive.
Why are we trying to find Hard drive errors? Wouldn't the best route be to help retrieve the files?

Illegal != Against the EULA. installing a copy of windows onto two computers using the same license key is against the EULA, but it's not necessarily illegal- well, it is, but really only in the same manner as jay-walking. I mean, if you tried to turn yourself into a police station, they would probably just laugh at you.

Now, regarding your file retrieval issue.

How is it now setup? do you have a C: drive with your old XP Pro install, and another with your current Home Installation (IE D: drive) or are they both on C:?

try taking ownership of the folder/files:

trust me- when a file contains bad sectors- in my experience- the computer freezes solid.

Very frustrating... especially when you haven't a CLUE what files they are.

(it was dumb, too, because I went three months with random freezes, and fixed it with a single chkdsk /r...) Quote from: BC_Programmer on June 29, 2009, 05:27:47 PM

ehh, it's not dumb computing is a learning experience

but thanks for the tip

well, yeah- except I already knew that chkdsk /r would fix it.

you mean, XP Professional ?

With respect to the disk that you lost, was it the disk that came with the computer when it was purchased?

yup, I misspoke, the one I need is xp professional...thats what came with my computer.

We had an older computer that had ME installed, then we upgraded it to xp home. That's the disc I used trying to get this comp to boot up.

I ran a chckdsk and everything seems ok.
I guess my main issue is that some of the files/programs were on my desktop in my old user acct, but not in my new one (I hope I'm making sense!) and for some reason some of the games are no longer working. I can see them when I click on local disk c/program files, but they don't work properly when I try to open them.
Also, they are not showing up on add/remove programs. do they uninstall when I delete the folder they are in?

~jennthe problem your having with games/programs is that they aren't installed to begin with- the files they installed in Pro still exist, but the registry entries don't this is why add/remove doesn't show them, and also why they don't work properly. Deleting the folders is advisable- and then reinstall the games, and they should work.

You're all going around in circles. what do you expect to find running a video DIAGNOSTIC? That the video card isn't working? Seems fairly clear that it isn't given the anomolous display. If reinstalling the driver didn't work, you need a new card. This will test all her HARDWARE including her motherboard, video card ETC. and I have stated previously that I think it is her video card but we are not looking at the computer and I don't want this user going off paying money and something else is causing it.yep it was the video cardwhich video card should i buy? any recommendations?

Solve : Recovery/Reboot on custom computer?

Answer»

I have a custom built computer (built by someone else) that's been having some problems. It's filled with viruses, it's extremely slow, and needs to be fixed. I bought it 3 weeks ago from a guy who said it was brand new, no viruses, etc.. But I obviously got ripped of due to my own ignorance of computers.. I've been trying to get a hold of him for the past COUPLE days, but for some reason he's never by the phone.
It is a custom built computer, like I said, but it has a Windows XP SP1 O.S. Also, before it goes into the loading screen for windows, another brand I am unfamiliar with shows up called "ASUS" (I believe) and the model is "A8W-E". I'm not sure what that is, or if it helps you better figure out what I'm running.

The computer has slowed down close to a complete stop within the past week, (after running a spyware check it had 150 some suspected viruses on it). I've been trying to download a better anti-virus program but both of my internet browsers no longer work (I do have internet connection though). So BASICALLY I'm in a serious pickle.
I was wondering if I could just reboot/system restore to get rid of the viruses and just START off from scratch? Or will that not work due to the ASUS?
Also, if I am able to do system restore and whatnot, will the graphics cards and other drivers automatically reinstall themselves, or will I have to find installation disks for them?
I greatly appreciate any help you can give me.

ASUS is the name of the motherboard's manufacturer. Should you start from scratch, you will need the ASUS motherboard support disc to install necessary drivers. As for graphics cards and other drivers, most should be available on the manufacturers' websites.

Even though you already have two browsers, you can always dowload more (Flock or Firefox, for example). For ANTIVIRUS software, I run AVG Free Edition (http://www.avg.com/download) and am quite happy with it. I also run Spyware Terminator.

I am far from being an expert and just putting in my 2 cents. Hopefully another poster will be able to provide a more comprehensive response.

Solve : Computer locks up before it gets to windows?

Answer»

This is my first post and I have limited knowledge of computer hardware so yall be patient with me please. My computer was RUNNING fine and then the electrician turned off all of the POWER before I could turn my computer off. When I tried to start it BACK up it started and gets to the screen where it says Pentium 4 and then locks up. I was able to get it to go into the bios screen once but after I exited the bios it froze up again I tried to reload windows and thought that it might repair whatever was broken but it doesn't recognize my cd drive. Anyone have any ideas on what to do next?

Thanks

Robertis your CD drive set to BOOT first in the CMOS boot order? Go back into CMOS and check the boot order of the drives....be sure the CD drive is set at the top of the list of bootable drives...I was trying to do that but I haven't been able to get back into it. It says "entering setup....." but never does.you should open up your computer and check to see if there is dust build-up.....Something is probably overheating.. What does it look like inside your computer?

Look closely at the heat sink on top of the CPU....The silver thing on the motherboard with the fan sitting on top of it... Is there a lot of dust in it?

generally speaking...if there is a lot of dust, you need to get a can of compressed air and blow out the computer, paying special attention to the CPU heat sink, the power supply vents, and the vent on the front of the computer....you'll have to pull the front cover off the computer to verify if the intake vent is free of dust, blocking itI will take a look at that when I get to the HOUSE. I have to use my work computer until I can get it fixed. Would that make it not boot? IT ran fine until he shut the power off. That sounds like a dead CMOS battery. They're easy to replace.
With the computer turned off, and yourself grounded do the following.
On the mother board look for a nickel sized round battery.
Take the battery out and replace it with a new one.
If I remember right it's a CR-2032.I'll look at that too. Thanks. No problem, let us know. Welcome to CH.

Solve : Trouble starting up??

Answer» http://s189.photobucket.com/albums/z145/SunriseTooSunset/?action=view&current=logo.png

^^ My mom's business is stuck on that screen.
It ACTS like it's loading but it won't start up no matter how long I wait.
Last thing I did to the computer was power SHUT it off because it
froze from a site I was using. All my moms business documents are on this laptop, she would murder me if she found out I broke it because then she'd have to pay for it.
I don't KNOW how to fix this PROBLEM, I've tried removing the battery and it didn't work

Sorry if I posted this in the wrong section too, I'm new at this.Did you try Safe Mode?

Solve : how much ram??

Answer»

i KNOW this sounds stupid but what is the max amount of ram that xp supports?Standard XP supports up to 4GB of memory. This is not just RAM, video memory and reserved memory for DEVICES will take chunks out of this limit.
For example if you have 4GB of RAM, you'll probably see around 3.8GB at the most, more realistically something like 3.5GB or less.
There may be limits on your board too.
Hope this helps.my board supports 16gb(which i don't plan on having that much for a long time)
and thank you it did help. You're welcome, happy to help.If you have XP 64 bit then it will support more than 4GB.That's why I started my post saying "Standard XP". XP X64 edition and Windows XP 64-bit support more RAM, sure, as do server versions of Windows.ROFL, thanks for repeating yourself Calum, I'd missed that. Heh, no problem.
It was more me being pedantic than ANYTHING REALLY.
