Solve : unable to copy to disc?

Answer»

Hi all,
Wondered if you can help.....I am sure I had the same PROBLEM once before  but cannot remember (over 50)
what I had to do to get things back to normal.
Cannot copy (write) photos to DISC with Nero or drag the folder to the drive and paste, am I right in thinking that you
should get the option on the left side to save to disc, because if so I am not getting that either,
but I can to the floppy or REMOVABLE storage (stick) which I did.
If I copy & paste onto drive, message reads     "F:| is not accessible......incorrect function"

Thanks for any help that you may give

Ned   DLoad and try CDBurnerXPro...Free.
If it works then the issue is with Nero. Thanks for that patio,
installed and it worked......great......so you think there could be a problem with Nero (used before OK)
should I reinstall Nero and see what happens !!

Thanks again

I used to have a version of Nero that ran great, until I went to Vista x64. Quote from: QUANTOS on July 04, 2009, 03:26:40 AM

No...running all the same, apart from up-dates..... the only software that I have put on lately is my old
pinnacle (version 10) that ran OK before (now removed, just in case)  Did you try uninstalling it and reinstalling it? Quote from: Quantos on July 04, 2009, 03:36:54 AM

Solve : Remember me - scanner problems? A new one and ??????

Answer»

I realized my old scanner was not coming back to life and bought a new one.  It's another HP.  I installed all the softwear, but now something weird is happening.  When I SHUT down my computer and then turn it back on, a screen pops up for me to log on as the user.  My computer has never done this before.  When I start it up, it goes straight to my desktop after going through all it's little Windows thing.  How do I get rid of that blue screen?  This computer takes long enough to boot up as it is, I don't want to add anything ELSE for it to do at start-up.  I went to Control Panel, User Accts., and looked at all the stuff there and I don't see anywhere it tells me I can bypass that screen.  I tried numerous things it said for you to do, but I still come up with the blue logon page.  I don't understand why adding that software made it happen - I've been using this computer for years and nothing like this has ever happened.   Can anyone tell me how to get rid of it?  I'm somewhat computer stupid, but I have tried everything I can understand to change it with no luck.  I don't like change, my husband is even worse about it, I just want everything to work the way it always has!

I'm praying some of you computer geniuses can help me for an easy fix!
Thanks - Debby
I cannot remember your computer specs but - let's assume it's Win 2k or XP --- what might let you fix this is to install Power Toys - TweakUI.

It has many simple options which include changing login stage etc ... and so get in quicker.  No GUARANTEE but it's easy to install and should not have any adverse EFFECTS at all.

Google "Power Toys" and you'll find the file - it's not big.

No idea why your scanner install WOULD do this at all...  "one o them thangs" maybe!

Solve : Windows ME will not start up?

Answer»

After INSERTING a normal flash memory STICK into my old laptop's USB port, Windows ME froze and LEFT me no option but to turn the power off. Since then it will not boot beyond the initial 'Microsoft Windows Millennium Startup Menu' in MS-DOS mode.

Having attempted each of the 4 options it PROVIDES to boot the laptop (including Normal, Logged, Safe Mode and Step-by-step confimation), it decides to either restart entirely and go back to that MS-DOS screen, or when CHOOSING Safe Mode display a blue error screen stating "Windows protection error. You need to restart your computer. System halted". None of the options including 'Normal' seems to work.

Is there anything I can do to boot this laptop, or at very least retireve all the files I desperately need?

Solve : Double-clicking to open a file in Windows Explorer 'restore' screen size?

Answer»

Using Windows XP PRO 2003 with SP3 a small but annoying problem occurred recently.  In Windows Explorer or Windows Internet Explorer (v. 7) I can double-click to open a FILE when I'm in full or maximum screen size, but not when I'm in the smaller or 'restore' size.  In the restore size, I can open folders or subfolders, but not individual FILES by double-clicking.  I've tried various ways to correct this but so far have not succeeded.  Does anyone have an answer like my wife announcing "it's right in front of your nose!"? Have you used a programme called 'Windows installer clean up' at any point? After installing the XP cd type the following command:

"SFC /scannow"

or

Install Tune-xp and there USE syschecker.

Solve : Computer is running really slow....?

Answer»

I know this is not what you want to hear but yes if you Ghost the drive you may INHERIT the same symptoms...
If it were me i would get a new drive and do a clean install of Windows and all my Programs...
You can then hook the offending drive up as a SLAVE and first USE the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard to migrate all your current system settings to the new drive...
After doing that you could then transfer any DATA you need from there into the appropiate programs/folders...

After that if you feel you can still trust the drive you can format it and use it for extra storage... Quote

fixed some errors
In my opinion, you need new hard drive. So i did good above ? ?Yeah....LOL....somehow, I was on a previous page, and I didn't see your post It was the hard drive - it finally got so slow that I swapped it for a new one and presto - computer running at full speed.  Took a couple of hours to ghost it but it did it.

Solve : need help reformating laptop?

Answer»

I recently got some kind of virus that some how made my system32.drivers files missing or corrupt. Whenever i start the computer it asks me if i wanna start in safe mode, last know good CONFIG, or regular windows. neither of these options work and it just keeps restarting to the same screen. I put the reformat cd that came with my toshiba satelite M45 laptop but it doesnt load. I tried changing the bios to make it boot from cd but it still doesnt work. I tried pressing delete and f11 at start up to get into dos mode but nothing works. It just keeps going back to the same screen asking me if i wanna go in safe mode or watever. Can anyone please help? I have a toshiba satelite M45 laptop with windows xp home edition. After you change the boot order in the BIOS, select "Save Changes and Exit" or similar; otherwise your change won't be saved.yea i did save  changes twice and still doesnt boot from cdTry cleaning the CD.

Try the CD in another computer to SEE if you can boot from it. BE CAREFUL!i think my cd drive may not be working because of the missing or corrupt system32.drivers. do u think buying an external cd drive will work? You should still be able to boot from the CD.

Did you try to boot from it in another computer?i dont have another computer to try with lol...but the cd is brand new with no scratches or anything so i dont see why it wouldnt work Quote

i dont have another computer to try with lol
Don't you have friends?yea i do but they dont wanna risk there hard drives being erased and reformatted...i already know the cd is fine so theres no NEED to try it on other peoples computers because people are having the same problem with this toshiba model and there boot cd does work on other peoples computersHard drives don't get erased by merely inserting Windows CD.
How do you know CD is fine?
You still don't know, if your drive is fine.
Both questions can be answered by trying CD on another computer.well the cd is brand new and was only opened two days ago..theres no scratches or MARKS on it either..and ive read online that this toshiba model has this reoccurring problem. Alot of people are saying to just put in the regular windows xp cd instead of the toshiba boot cd. Borrow Windows CD from a friend, and see if you can boot from it. Solve : my computer freezes as soon as i turn it on and click on any icon.?

Answer»

Well...the SUBJECT just about covers it.  Last night my computer was working with no problems, and then it froze up, so I RESTARTED it....and then after it was back on...when i clicked on any icon or the start menu...it immediately froze again.  And i repeated this unfortunate cycle about 15 times before i just gave up.  I tried again this morning, and it happened again.  This is really making my day sad.  If anyone has any insight...i would be BEYOND thankful to you.Does this PROBLEM still happen in Safe Mode?lily441, Perchance when your computer "froze" was there a "floppy " disc in the floppy drive? Is it still in there? If so remove it and restart the computer. truenorthThanks for the ideas.  I tried both of them.  My computer will not start in safe mode.  I am expecting the worst at this point.  I care less about the computer and more about the stuff I didn't get around to backing up.  Anyone have any other suggestions?Hmmmm....Strange.....

What Operating System is this?

What were you doing when the computer froze?

Any recent downloads/installs/hardware changes?i use windows xp.  and i was just doing my typical after work RELAXING stuff...like  clothing shopping and checking emails.  nothing out of the ordinary.  then it wouldn't open a new tab...and after i restarted it...i couldn't get the internet explorer to open...now sometimes it will not even let me log in.  it just freezes up.  i haven't downloaded any new programs or changed anything. it has just completely stopped working.   the only thing was that i was a week behind on an update i needed to complete. To retrieve any data you need you should hook it up jumpered as a slave drive on another machine preferably with the same flavor of Windows and then copy/burn what you need...

Afterwards you can do a Clean Install of XP...

Warning: Make sure you backup what you need because the clean install will wipe all your data in the first stage...

Solve : Easy way to fix the ASMS problem in setup?

Answer»

The ASMS folder is currupted? It is fixable with a HACK without turning it Pirated.
1. Copy all directories of the currupted Windows XP CD EXCEPT the I386 folder.
2. Copy the i386 directory from another CD-ROM with the same edition onto the Hard Drive
3. Copy the i386 directory from the currupted CD-ROM with everything except the ASMS folder.
4. Burn it on to a CD-R.
If you are doing a installation without burning a CD-R, skip steps 1 and 4. To boot, you need floppy DISKS at http://www.allbootdisks.com/download/xphome.html for Home Edition or http://www.allbootdisks.com/download/xppro.html for Professional.
I did this on Professional but Home Edition may work. Can't assist with pirated VERSIONS of any SOFTWARE...

Solve : Corporate XP Install vs OEM HP Bundle installation?

Answer»

Is there a way to install a clean installation of XP Pro with a single HP OEM Bundle installation? Options for installation at the restore disks menu do not give option for a clean installation w/o bundled trials etc.

Trying to save someone from spending $140 for a clean copy of XP Pro when they have the HP OEM Bundle Restore disk. They WANT XP Pro without all the crap that HP LIKES to bundle install with the restore.

Is there a way that this can be done. I know for a fact that you cant use your clean Microsoft XP Pro CD to build the system and use the HP XP Pro key on the outside of the case, it will come up with invalid key, and if contacted in MS to activate it, it means that they end up with a duplicate of my OS running off my key vs theirs. So I wont do this...

Thinking that if the restore CD was used, and a clean installation could happen, the key would match and they would be good to go.

Not sure if there is an installation switch that can happen such as D:\setup -(something) in order to perform a clean corporate build of this system. Its stupid that HP doesnt offer an option at the installation menu to deselect the crap they bundle for a clean install.

This system also is not like other HPs I have seen that come with 2 disks the actual XP Pro and the Start with this HP CD in which you can bypass  the start with this HP CD and just boot directly from the XP Pro SP1 CD. This one is a single CD or DVD with it all on one disk. You can try pruning the i386 folder onto a bootable CD and run the setup from there...You will need the drivers CD to finish the task but i have had some success with this method in the past...

I was going to suggest something similar, like using the i386 folder and excluding all the trialware and junk that the OEM disk includes....If that's what you were talking about

I've never TRIED to make my own disk using the i386 folder though, so I can't offer too much advicebut then again, you could just manually uninstall said bundled trials off pc once the restoration is done (before you touch anything else) and it would be like clean installation. That's what I usually do since it sets up all of the drivers, hotkeys, etc. without having to download and install them all individually. It's EASY to uninstall all the extra junk that comes with it.that's what I do too..........but I think Dave was looking for a way to get around that There is an app out there called Decrapifier but i am reluctant to recommend it as i don't like recommending things i have not tested myself personally. Thanks

Read the site!  Unlimited installs should tell you straight away that it's a HACK, or pirated Corporate Software.
If it's LEGAL you're interested in, then that's NOT it.!!!

Now, if you don't mind a hack, then go for it.
But let me tell you, that version of windows is available from multiple internet sites for FREE if you look hard enough.    Most of those sites will be somewhere in the old USSR.

For "Legal" software you're going to spend some REAL money, and you should spend it with bonafied legal software dealers, like "EggHead" or "Tiger Direct".
Amazon.com might be another possibility.

Good Luck and HAPPY Shopping!

Solve : XP install prob after Vista delete.?

Answer»

System:  Gateway Laptop ML3109 Vista (32-bit)

Vista is a resource hog, even with 2GB RAM and streamlining on this system.  Decided to do the SMART thing and go with XP.  Successfully'deleted' Vista to allow XP disc to load/install.  Went through all the obligatory setup steps for PARTITIONS and the rest and the install ran all the way through to the end...apparently successfully.

BOTTOM LINE:  Despite a few fiddles here and there in the BIOS (I changed them, changed them back, and even loaded defaults)...I get the XP splash, etc, then a FULL blue screen loaded with text almost from top to bottom.  Problem is that this 'error/problem' blue screen lasts all of 1 second, if that.  I can't CAPTURE or read the text of this screen so I dunno what it says.

THE CATCH?  Methinks it's because I'm using a factory Dell XP disc to try to install on a Gateway system.  True?  If I'm right, is there a fix or a trick-out so I can pull this off?  And don't worry, this is a real, registered XP disc from one of our unused desktops.  3 people here.  3 desktops.  Only need 2 desktops.  Other one has been mothballed for a year.  Many thanks in advance.  Peace.

Kevin Quote

I'm using a factory Dell XP disc to try to install on a Gateway system.

This is definitely the source of your issues....
You can borrow an XP CD to install legally as long as the version and Service Packs match.
Have you DLoaded all the XP drivers for that machine ? ?He-heh!  Yes, the drivers.  That was a big sticking point for this machine.  I believe I have all of them.  Most of them anyway.   Having a problem logging onto some FTP sites that won't even work with the anonymous logon.  I assumed the install of XP THEN the drivers afterwards, right?

And would you elaborate on your "borrow" an XP disc STATEMENT, please.  You mean it's legal to borrow a generic/nonspecific XP disc to overcome this problem so long as I have a bought copy?  Many thanks.

KevinAbsolutely...
If the machine has for example a valid registration for let's say XPPro with SP2 then that's the CD you need...
The install should go first....followed by the install of all the appropiate Drivers (MBoard Chipset always first) then following Windows activation and Windows Update...

Hope this helps....

PS;  Make sure it is an official XP CD...So there's no easy DIY 'hack' for my problem?  MS and the major manufacturers are that smart???

So, get a retail version and then do the drivers and I'm GOLDEN, right?  Sounds like it.  OH!!  What about the keycode or reg # or whatever?  This won't matter?  And future updates?

Beyond what you said before, what are your recommendations as far as priority on installing the drivers?  Thanks yet again.

Kevin

Flashing a BIOS should be a last resort.  It may truly be required, but I'd try to get some more support directly from Dell, or this site, before you try it.

This is a good point, sometimes those support people throw wild SOLUTIONS at with without considering carefully what your situation is.............did you ever take out the RAM from your computer and look at the specs./info.  on them.......like I suggested I certainly AGREE!
I would  have thought that a job as seemingly simple and basic as adding ONE G of RAM to a 3 year old computer should not demand so risky a step
So first of all I'll wait til my replacement RAM stick arrives from the good folks at 4AllMemory.com

Then I'll log in and whine again

Thanks again GUYSYOU already ordered another RAM stick

Do you ever pull out the RAM cards and get the specs off of them??Block
Yes ..
THE vey first thing I did was check the specs on the 2 units already in the slots
And to get the compatiblity requirement /speed etc on a new one

And dont get all hot and bothered.
When I said I ordered a replacement I meant that 4AllMemory.com instantly offered to REPLACE the new(and probably faulty) 1 G stick I just got...
...at no cost to me Quote from: PS STEVE on June 04, 2009, 05:00:18 PM

"Most computers" are NOT "that way." Most computers will display the character typed - not some other character. Where are you located and why do you say that most computers display characters that are different from the typed characters?

Solve : computer says no modem?

Answer»

How can i fix an E-machine when it says no modem ? It crashed and we reinstalled the windows xp and now it says no modem . And also says F file missing what is that ?jennifer82777,When you say "it crashed"--what were you doing immediately prior to this "crash"? What were the symptoms generated by the computer as it "crashed"? When you say "reinstalled windows"--how did you reinstall windows xp? No idea what this F file may be--but others may have some knowledge about that. It may be possible that since you "reinstalled" windows XP that your modem may need drivers reinstalled for it to work. Tell us the process you used to "reinstall windows Xp. What type of modem are you referring to? What can you not do since the reinstall that you could do before the "crash"? In your HARDWARE configuration "device manager" what if any do you have YELLOW asterisks or question marks beside? truenorth

I was online and it shut done completely then when i restarted it went straight to system recovery but the system recovery wouldnt complete . We put in the system recovery disc thats how we reinstalled that . i have no CLUE what type of modem it is .  There is yellow question marks beside other devices , multimedia audio controller, other pci bridge device, pci simple communication controller , sm bus controller There should have also been an eMachimes Driver CD...you need to re-install all the drivers from it.thats the only disc that came with it was the reinstall for windows xp contact eMachines for a replacement Driver CD....or they may have a site with drivers.they WONT send anything or help because the warranty is expired and cant get online to get it downloaded They should still be able to provide a CD warranty or not...
Or you could try DLoading from a machine that has web access...jennifer82777,You obviously are able to get online with "some" computer. It is not necessary to actually use the computer that REQUIRES the drivers to obtain and download them. They can be accessed by any computer stored on a removeable media IE; a floppy (if size permitts),a cd-r, a flash drive ,a zip drive. Then transport them to the affected computer. If you are having difficulties via a telephone call to E-machines send them an email to their tech support asking for the link to the web site that has the drivers. I normally recommend telephone support however after warranty expiry email will often achieve results that phone contact won't.goodluck, truenorth

Solve : Database issues...?

Answer»

This might classify as a windows thing, not just an 'Access' thing
because it effects any program that uses a DATABASE with access-based file system even if Access is installed or not...
Windows XP Home, sp3, Office XP sp3:  recently started having a
problem with not just Access databases but being able to open a
program that uses an "Access-based form of database" (a program that
doesn't require Access installed, yet uses an access-based database) I
first noticed it yesterday when I tried to open my PHOTOSHOP Album
program and it failed. I went to my database of "program discs" (to
find where my adobe DISC was to reinstall it) and Access was all
screwed up too.

I totally removed office XP, reinstalled and still get the FOLLOWING
error: When I open a database and click on a table or form it pops up
(the yellow exclamation mark) "Unknown" that's it, Unknown (then it
gets the "Access must close now...").
I knew the Adobe used an access based form of database and even after
reinstalling, it's error says when I open the program: it says "The
ODBC data source reported the following error: INTERNAL error, data
not found"

The databases work fine (both Access and Adobe) on my laptop that
hasn't been cleaned with the CCleaner so I know it's not just the DB's
themselves.

Is there something in the registry I should look fore to change or put
back if it's missing?

Solve : Computer shuts down when it connects to the internet.?

Answer»

Hi there  ,

As advised, I've moved my query to this forum from the virus one.

I'm having a problem connecting to the internet, that is, whenever i try to connect to my wireless hub via a WiFi CONNECTION (i can freely open internet explorer, but it does nothing as the wireless network isn't up and running). Each time do, my computer immediately shuts down. This only started a few days ago, totally out of the blue. I have neither installed new software or hardware.

There is another instance when the computer shuts itself down immediately, and that is when i type cmd in the dos prompt, it hasn't happened while doing anything ELSE as yet.

I don't think it's an overheating issue, and the computer will run indefinitely provided that I don't do either of the above, and the FAN is clear.

When the problem first occurred I FORMATTED my hard drive and reinstalled windows (XP) and all the drivers, but that hasn't made any difference.

The malware specialists have taken a look at my logs and told me that there is nothing of that sort on my system.

So I'm kind of at a loss at the moment and I'm hoping one of you guys can help please !

Thanks in advance  You mentioned this is a recent problem. Can you try a System Restore to few days before the problem started.

Solve : Dual booting with 2 XP versions?

Answer»

My "old" c:drive decided to go south but I had it backed up. The original OS install had been
working flawlessly and I had installed a generous amount of progs/utilities etc., and collected a great deal of email (Thunderbird)  and bookmarks (Firefox). I had kept the
system regularly defragged,  maintained (RegCure), and protected (AVG, SPyBoot, Trojan
Hunter). Trouble started when I attempted to install SP3. A blue screen rapidly flashed,
not long enough to read it, and that was that. Booting STOPPED. Install CD could not repair.
Concluded a new HDD was needed, so I got one and installed it. I have a dual Opteron
244 on a     TYAN Thunder K8WE S2895, with 4 SATA onboard adaptors (0-3) connecting to 3 (non raid-ed) SATA drives including "old" c:. The thought occurred to me to get a Seagate 500GB SATA drive (same make as the 2 remaining ones on one of which the c: backup was stored) and that to save time re-installing all progs (and updates) and also recuperating all other stuff from "old c:") I might do a clean install of XP Pro on the first
partition and restore the "old c:" on the second one. In other words have both, the new and the old XP installation available in a dual boot config.I would then back up the new install (slender because practically just the root stuff) This would give me a very efficient way to get into the system if problems occurred, as opposed to go into Install CD, etc., etc.,  I edited the Booit.init as follows
[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional 2" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

Alas, the "old C:" (now on second partition of new HDD as "New Volume H:" does not boot,
pointing to a "corrupt ntoskernl.exe" file with the advice to re-install it. I looked at the
System32 folder of te "old c:" drive and the file was missing(?) so I made a copy of the one
of the new XP install and pasted it. To no avail. So I looked at the Boot.init file n the RESTORED "old c:" and got this:

[boot loader]
timeout=20
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional"  /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect
;C:\CMDCONS\BOOTSECT.DAT="Microsoft Windows Recovery Console" /cmdcons

Puzzled by the reference to "Recovery Console" /cmdcons", could this be a left-over from
the ATTEMPT to repair the "old C:"? I left it untouched.
Thinking the partition might need changing I ALTERED it to "2",b ut that didn't help either.

My questions is: does the boot file of the restore c: XP play a part, or is it redundant?
What am I doing wrong and is there something else I could try to successfully bring up the "old c:" stuff as a second boot up option. It would make everything so simple :-).
I explored you very excellent site for similar occurrences but didn't find one. A lot of good
info on dual booting W2K/XP, even WIN98/XP, etc., but not on "dual XP". Help would be
much appreciated as the time saved is precious.

 Hey,
What i would do is use ERD commander (can download at microsoft) to repair the file system on the second partition and then use the windows recovery console to fix the boot file.

If you dont know it google it!

What parts of the Old partition you are tring to save? The OS, the apps, documents?

Many thanks, I'll google it. I'm trying to save it all. The restore ALREADY gave me all
the data as such, obviously the programs don't all work and, more important
the partition does not boot up, and, wanting to learn from this, I would like to
know why not and if I'm making wrong assumptions in my logic, as outlined in previous message.  Perhaps it's not possible to use thew same OS in a dual boot config, or
I'm making mistakes in bootinit file "path" to the restored "old c:"??

Hi, I looked up and am downloading ERD (64MB!), but I fear it's one of those programs you can easily get lost in but I'll have a go. Meantime,  could you possibly be so kind and comment on my questions in original message. I thought I followed a legitimate path I could explain to myself but without success, so it's good if not essential for future reference to know what one is or has been doing wrong. I'm a video editor and as much as I'm fascinated by the inner
workings of computers, I'd rather be editing, a complex enough activity but one I can
solve problems in !!
Obviously no longer relevant but your original problem was likely not a failed hard disk. It would have been best to determine what the blue screen was by disabling automatic restart on error. Quote

Puzzled by the reference to "Recovery Console" /cmdcons", could this be a left-over from
the attempt to repair the "old C:"?

This is an option to boot into the XP Recovery Console which has, at some time, been installed on your hard drive, see kb307654 and kb216417.  You need to remove the leading ";" from the entry in your boot.ini file.

I got ERD COMMANDER (impressive) but it didn't recognize my restore of  "old c:" (now on e:)
and I'm beginning to wonder what happens when one uses built-in backup (bkf). By chance, I had backed  up before the HDD crashed and, before restoring "old c:" I did a clean-install on new drive/partition (new c:) from CD. This install had to be re-authentified because the original Product Key didn't work and I got a new one from MS.
Is it possible that the non-recognizing of the restore has something to do with this?
When dual booting, what exactly does a restored system need? Must it be put on the c: partition? Can one somehow check if what is needed is present? I got ALL (visible) files restored including progs and data. But it just won't appear in the boot up options, and, as said, ERD doesn't recognize it either.
You never how exactly this "backup" was originally created...this may affect things.I used the built-in tools/backup wizard (advanced) on 2 sessions, first a complete backup of
c: and then an incremental one a couple of weeks later.I may be wrong on this but i don't think the built-in XP backup utility will create a proper bootable image file for restore...
For this you need an image program such as Ghost or my personal favorite Acronis True Image...
It's a shame MS can get away with misleading people like this...

Solve : Getting this alert screen "Windows 3.x Migration"?

I have an AC'97 Audio chip and a few weeks ago, I decided to install an older SoundBlaster  card into my computer, hopefully, for better sound. While I was in the BIOS, trying to disable the AC'97, the power went out. Storm WINDS, blew down power lines to our small town. Everything seemed okay when I booted up, but the next MORNING when I turned it on again, I got the following screen:

http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2006-8/1209601/c002.jpg

As my USB keyboard was UNABLE to do a screen capture at this point during power up, I had to take a photo of it with my digital camera. The screen appears after the Windows logo, but before the WELCOME screen. I have no idea what it means, so I pressed " Cancel ". It did continue to load without incident. However, every second or third time I turn on the computer, the screen appears. Obviously, this does not want to go away.
Can anyone explain what may have happened when the power went out? Perhaps a solution?

Solve : Unable to find cookies folder?

Well, first off my computer has been running extremely slow ever since I got the internet re-activated (approximately...10 minutes ago ) and my mom said I should clean out the cookies. So I went to the start menu where it was on my other computer, but i can't find it anywhere. I searched for it and everything. Where is it and why is my comp going so slow?Cookies won't slow down your computer.
What exactly do you MEAN by "slow"? Any program, internet? If anything is MAKING your web browser slow, it would most likely be the temporary files/cache. Quote from: Broni on September 24, 2008, 06:22:27 PM

Cookies won't slow down your computer.
What exactly do you mean by "slow"? Any program, internet?

I mean I clicked on the internet explorer and it took about 5 minutes to fully load. And everytime i went to a different site I had to wait another 5 minutes. Also when i watched videos they froze frequently.I guess I should also mention what happened today. When I logged in, it took about 10 minutes for all my desktop items to load. A window popped up that said "Loading Personal Settings: Microsoft Outlook 6" which has never appeared before. Also, two command prompt boxes opened but they disappeared before I could copy down what they said. Again, this has never happened before. So, you are having general computer slowness.
What do you mean by having internet reactivated? Quote from: Broni on September 25, 2008, 04:38:50 PM
So, you are having general computer slowness.
What do you mean by having internet reactivated?

Well I first got this computer about 4 years ago from my dad's boss. It was my first computer so at first I just used it for typing and drawing and general games. Then a year LATER we got internet and cable from Brighthouse Networks. Unfortunately, my father was fired and we had to get the internet turned off 9they took the modem back). So I continues typing and drawing for 2 more years. But now we got it back. It seems to be getting better with each day but whenever the screensaver pops up, the computer freezes for a little while it loads. What are computer specs: processor speed, amount of RAM, hard drive size/free SPACE?
What kind of security tools do you use (antivirus, firewall)?

Solve : MS Backup and Restore Facility?

Answer»

At the moment l have a (D) drive which is CD/DVD read only, an (E) drive which is CD/DVD read and write, and an external (F) drive which is for storage.
So if the hard drive (C) crashes, and there is no get out of jail free card, one would need a DISK to insert that boots and restores the system to how it was.
I know there are various progs. out there to backup the complete system, but the way l read it is that you need that backup programs software to restore the system.
As l have just a Windows XP Home Edition Upgrade disk, thought l'd stick with their own backup / restore FACILITY for now, but am finding it a bit difficult in shaking off the save to drive (A) function.
The normal route doesn't seem to be of help and if l go into advance mode, it shows drive (D) as just cd and drive (E) as just dvd ram. Any filename entered at this point just comes back with a message saying "ensure it's a valid path".
How then do l create a bootable disk or isn't this POSSIBLE with Windows Backup / Restore
Sorry, not being rude, but please don't tell me about other IMAGING programs at the moment (although l will probably ask about these later) as l'd like to try and sort this MS Backup / Restore facility out first.
Many thanks MS backup is more, or less worthless. Don't waste your time.Windows Backup won't really rise to this kind of challenge, Willy.  Despite your final request, I'm going to go ahead anyway and tell you about CloneZilla - which you should use to image your harddrive once fully installed, and Cobian Backup which you should use to backup your data subsequently.  ALWAYS keep a CloneZilla CD to hand!  Oo - and a GParted CD for that matter.And/or Macrium Reflect...also FREE.Thanks Rob and Patio.
Your advice is very much appreciated and l'll go and check these out.

Solve : I can't get out of safe mode-tried everything?

Answer»

For some reason, when I logged on the other night, my computer went into safe mode. I re-booted, and still CAME up the same. I called my bro-in-law(who is a computer genius) and tried what he said, but I am stuck in safe mode. Have seriously thought about getting another computer, but if the problem can be corrected, I would rather not. Any ideas? PLEASE HELP!!HEY Try this

1) boot up in safe mode
2)bring up taskmgr (alt/ctl/del)
3)Select file: either use the browse button to get to this path  and double click on MSCONFIG.exe or   type the entire path in by hand ->C:\windows\pchealth\helpctr\binaries\msconfig.exe

4)This will bring you back to msconfig screen.
5) From there you can select the boot.ini TAB and unselect the /SAFEBOOT check box.
6) Restart your PC and lets see, hope this works!

Solve : Improper startup?

Answer»

Hi Guys,

I've been having problems in STARTUP.  The system takes unusually long to begin with, and then I get sporadic windows flashing every few seconds.  Finally several freeze.

The message is: SYMSNAPSERVICE is not available (or has not started)
Type NET HELPMSG 3521

The system continues to check the A drive every few seconds.

Any idea what's going on or how I can access that help msg?  I have Windows XP sp2

Thank you, as always. Please list all Norton/Symantec applications on that machine...one of them is the culprit here...I was thinking the same thing.

The only Symantec software I'm aware of is Norton Ghost.  However the problem seemed to crop up after performing an update on Spybot.  But I don't think that's a Symantec product.

BTW this problem doesn't occur every TIME.  I'd say ~50% of the time.OK let me rephrase:
What Norton programs were on that machine that you since have removed ? ?
I don't believe the file/service belongs to Ghost...SORRY, I'm at a loss to remember any.

I did a complete system reinstall 5 months ago - reformatting the C drive - but I don't recall INSTALLING any Norton stuff since then other than Ghost.

I could check the registry and see if there are any Norton remnants.  Or perhaps do a search on any files with 'sym' in them.

Sound reasonable? That'll work...i'll be here for awhile if not one of our other Experts will be along to dive in...
BTW what version of Ghost and does it include a Scheduler ? ?I INSTALLED Ghost 2-3 months ago but haven't used it.  The reason I had to reformat the C drive was a disastrous result from using another disk copying product.  It ruined both disks!  And this wasn't freeware - I paid for it.  (fortunately they gave me my money back)

Anyway, I have been nervous to run Ghost because of this.  My business is on this PC and that really worries me.

Nonetheless I just tried to run Ghost and it seems I have lost the shortcut connection.  I looked and executed the .exe file but nothing happened.

I also have a Symantec directory off Program Files that is filled with all sorts of files.

I don't know whether to delete and reinstall Ghost or not.  Maybe I should just remove it for now.  And I don't believe I activated the scheduler.SymSnapService.exe is definitely Ghost file:

Solve : Suggestions requested re: blue screen of death?

Answer»

Hi,

WELL July 1st (Canada Day here in the cold country) greeted me with the blue screen of death on my desktop...aaarrrrgh.  It has happened TWICE before with the result of reloading the OS and all the attendant hassles.  But last time was over 2 years ago...

Computer is running XP HOME and when turned on begins to boot only to display the blue screen and the message as follows:

Unmountable_boot_volume

Technical data
xxxStop:0x000000ED (0x8174FE30, 0xC0000032, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)

If I try to boot using F8 and safe mode it does the same thing every time.

One time though I got the following message:
File missing or corrupt
\system32\ntoskrnl.exe.

Is there anything I can try other than an OS reload...Can I REPLACE this file from the Windows disc I have (which is the original purchased copy)?

Any help would be greatly appreciated as always.

Happy July 4th
SampThe hard drive might be on its way out. I would suggest downloading a utility and buring it to CD such as Seagates Seatools or Maxtors bootable diagnostic CD and run tests on the drive. If it comes up healthy hardware wise then do you think you could have been hit with a virus that attacked the kernel etc?...or RAM...

If you have more than one RAM module installed, try starting computer with one RAM stick at a time.
If you have only one RAM stick installed...
...run memtest: http://www.techspot.com/vb/topic62524.html

Thanks for the suggestions.

I will try these and see where it goes.

Much appreciated once again.

Solve : Autorun advice, required please?

Answer»

Hello

I have WRITTEN a simple autorun.ini file for a CD:

[autorun]
shellexecute=index.html
ICON=forCD.ico

The autorun works but it does not display the small graphic as it ought to in the My Computer window over the D (CD-ROM) drive. I

have a JPG called forCD and it is in the same directory as the autorun.ini itself.

Many thanks.

Steve

The image files has to be an Icon, not a Jpeg.Hello Carbon

Thanks for your message.

OK, I have changed the name and file format to locklogo.ico and the script as follows:

[autorun]
shellexecute=index.html
icon=locklogo.ico

It's still not showing as an image over the drive. It looks as if the image is 'there', but missing (as on some Web sites, where images have been REMOVED).

Thanks again.

SteveStrange....

Exactly how did you convert the file to an .ICO?

Also, what is it's size? (dimensions of the icon)It's 72 x 61px. I saved it in Photoshop.

I had it as locklogo.jpg, but in Photoshop's 'Save As' I removed the .jpg and substituted .ico. Then I surrounded locklogo.ico by inverted commas so that I had: "locklogo.ico" and forced the programme to save in that format.

When I look in the directory now, I see it saved as locklogo.ico.

SteveYou cannot do that. You have to Convert the .jpg file.
http://www.google.com.hk/search?q=convert+jpg+to+ico&btnG=Search&complete=1&hl=en&sa=2Hello Carbon

I used the LINK you posted - thanks - to convert the image, but I cannot see it still.

This is the script I am USING:

[autorun]
shellexecute=index.html
icon=locklogo.ICO

and you can see here what 'My Computer' looks like:

http://www11.brinkster.com/stevehigham/buster.html

Cheers for all your help so far.

Steve

It should work.....Try restarting the computer yet?

Can you attach the icon file to your next post.

Solve : Why does my hard drive fan run so fast????

Answer»

My fan has been going on faster and then shutting off FREQUENTLY while I'm on.  It recently started going on twice as fast and then only slowing down.  Now it seems to ALWAYS be on.  I have two drives in my pc.  Drive C has the Windows XP OS on it.  But Drive D is 110 gigs and has all my files and pictures on it.  What should I do to shut that *censored* fan up??Hard drive fan? Is this an add-on? If so, what brand name?

If this is not a hard drive fan, what kind of fan is it? I have never needed such a thing. What exactly makes it speed up or slow down? (Your post was not clear.)Maybe I'm wrong.  Its the fan on the back of my pc.  It speeds up then slows down alot.  Is that a problem?  Because it didn't do that before and my pc has slowed down alot.....exhaust fan?YEAH thats it.
Or power supply fan? Do you know how to check your system temps? What kind of machine is this?

Solve : I can't burn pictures onto CD-RW anymore. Help! I'm running out of disk space!?

Answer»

I'll be honest ... I know just enough about computers to get myself INTO trouble, but not necessarily OUT of trouble!

But, I haven't had a problem with my computer in the past couple of years because I've learned to read and ask questions before trying any 'fixes' by myself.

I have a Dell Dimension 4100, Intel Pentium III that originally came with Windows 98, but I've been running Windows XP for the last two years or so without a problem.

I run defrag weekly and run spyware and anti-virus scans daily.

I have a digital Nikon camera and take lots of pictures of my new grandson.  I organize them and put them into folders on my desktop.  I 'save' them with a photo editor to minimize their size and then I drag and drop the folder to my D: drive, which is my CD-RW drive.

This has worked without a hitch for over a year.

For the last few months it won't work!  The wizard will stop and tell me that it cannot write files to that drive because the CD is either full or corrupt. (paraphrasing)

I went to the store and bought new CD-RWs and I still get the same message!

Device MANAGER tells me it is working properly.
Under D: drive properties the box is checked to enable.

The only thing I can think of that could possibly be different in the last few months would be the automatic updates from Microsoft.

Because of the folders of photos sitting on my desktop my available disk space is getting quite low and my computer has slowed down dramatically.

I'm afraid my hard drive will crash, but I don't want to DELETE the precious photos of my grandson.

Can you give me any helpful suggestions?

Thank you so much!
Two things - and not necessarily a solution.

First - I do wonder if the CD-ROM has a laser problem and cannot write properly - but then would ask if it is reading data OK or not.  Right now I am thinking the CD-ROM is faulty enough to give problems even tho it shows as 'working properly'.

Wonder also - just thought - maybe knock it out from Device manager and see if a reboot will let XP ''find'' it again .... not that that would fix a laser problem.

Tried a CD cleaner disk? - another late thought.

Second - do you have serviceable USB ports?  If so - and even if USB 1.1 - get a decent size flash stick - even 2Gb and 4Gb units are these days pretty good for price.  If this worked then at least copy stuff onto that medium for now - safety measure and then even take flash stick to a friend's puter and burn then onto  CDs.Thanks for your quick reply!

Yes, it is reading properly.  I can put in any disk with photos and they are all there.

How can I knock it out of the device manager?  Just highlight it and delete it?  Then reboot my computer?

Thanks!Select the item and right click - and select uninstall.

Hopefully then on next boot up - it should be seen and reinstalled.  May not change anything of course re burning problem.

You didn't say about your USB status - I still think this could be a good first stage to at least archive those new pics - and maybe even then pick up a new CD-ROM drive.

Oh one more thing - you mentioned CD-RW --- have you tried a simple CD-R disk as a comparison.  You'll only waste 20c if it goes wrong.!  And - tho I don't use CD-RW - never have for some reason - do they not need a format before use, or am I thinking back to dark old days!? Well, I've got lot's of experience with CD-RW disks, and all of it BAD.

My personal experience with RW's is that they are not reliable and may not even be readable on any drive except the one that wrote them.
That alone, makes them almost useless.
SO, why spend a lot more money for a disk that's not reliable?

CD-R disks are very reliable, when used with a properly functioning CD burner and are very inexpensive too.  And, I'm told the average disk will last for about 30 years.

There are countless CD/DVD burning programs available.  Many even FREE!
My personal favorite has always been the World-Class "Nero".
It will do everything a CD burning program should do and does it well.

However, even Nero can't compensate for a malfunctioning CD burner.

I hope this has been somewhat helpful

Cheers mates!
The Shadow

Okay .... I deleted the CD drive, then rebooted the computer and XP did find it and it is there again.

I do have 2 USB ports, one of which is being used already.

I have an Omega zip drive but the disk only has 100MB of space on it, not nearly enough for what I need.

And, before I went out and bought the RW disks I went through about 25 R disks which could not be reused and I had to throw them away.  This is why I bought the RWs.

Where is the best place for me to find out about this Nero burner?

Thanks!I just downloaded Real Player only to discover I cannot import the .jpg format of my photos, only music and video formats.

Now, I have to remove this software from my computer because it's not helping and I'm really REALLY getting low on hard drive space.

I'm going to go to the store tomorrow and buy a CD burner cleaning disk to see if that helps at all.

Any other suggestions are more than welcome!

Thanks!Real Player?  Not sure why you got that!

A Google SEARCH will lead you to sources for Nero.

If a CD cleaning disk does not help then consider a replacement burner .... but check to see if old one is IDE or SATA so the connection will be same.

Re HDD space - maybe you have done this already but see if you can get rid of some unnecessary stuff, like tmp files, internet cache etc and empty recycle bin.

If you have a spare USB port then a flash stick could still be an option as an interim measure.  Even possibly, add a 2nd HDD as internal - or obtain an external to use via USB.  Seems to me the priority is to get those pics copied/transferred and saved.Given this thread is about disk space (in effect) I'm surprised nobody has recommended CCleaner...

For a CD burner to write to a disk, it must first CACHE the Data.  It needs space for that cache.  I might suspect that with NO space left on your HD, there's also no room for the cache.  If that's the case, that would stop the burning process right there.

I've tried CCleaner twice and both times it's messed something up on my PC.
NO MORE!  I use a combination of my own XPCleanup.bat program and the "Disk Cleanup" program that comes already installed in Windows.

You can get even more in-depth cleaning, but just getting rid of all the temp files, temporary internet files and the basic garbage that windows puts on a HD, will get you back a lot of your HD space.

There may or may not be anything wrong with the CD burner.

Just a thought,
The Shadow

Good point TheShadow- the built-in burning facilities all require disk space to write their image file.Agreed - something I had forgotten about!

Hopefully if some space can be rescued things might improve. Quote from: BC_Programmer on October 01, 2008, 10:57:31 AM

mmmmnewgranny, It is my belief that "The Shadow" is pointing you in the right direction. It is not that you optical media disc does not have enough space it is the partition of your hard drive that has run out of space. All these marvelous grandchildren pictures that you have been burning to you disc --have you EVER gone in and removed ANY of them once you placed them on your computer (from the camera)? If not by now ("for a year or so") being a typical grandparent you may have choked your hardrive partition. Bring up the hardrive from "my computer" and right click on the drive symbol and then select properties and tell us what the percentage of "used space and free space " are? truenorth

Solve : Corrupt Files, Chkdsk Problem?

Answer»

I'm on a Windows XP home Toshiba laptop, SP3 and I having a problem I havent come across before....
After a reboot, I'm getting corrupt file messages from 'Panda Media Booster' and from the profile FOLDER in Firefox, so I ran a normal chkdsk and that doesnt solve the problem, so I set it to run a full chkdsk on startup, but the problem is when it boots and gets to the blue screen, it tells me that it "Cannot open volume for direct access' and skips the scan and boots normally, I have never had a problem running a chkdsk before now, so I cant get rid of the currupt files and also I cannot get Firefox to run, can anyone help me out with this?
Thanx....
Run  chkdsk  from the safe mode and/or  sfc /scannow.  sfc is a system file checker.  sfc will replace corrupt system files.  ( Will need an OS installation disk. )

Tap  F8 as you BOOT and choose safe mode with command prompt.

C:\>chkdsk  /?
Checks a disk and displays a status report.

CHKDSK [volume[[path]filename]]] [/F] [/V] [/R] [/X] [/I] [/C] [/L[:size]]

volume          Specifies the drive letter (followed by a colon),
                  mount point, or volume name.
filename        FAT/FAT32 only: Specifies the files to check for fragmentation
.
/F              Fixes errors on the disk.
/V              On FAT/FAT32: Displays the full path and name of every file
                  on the disk.
On NTFS: Displays cleanup messages if any.
/R              Locates bad sectors and recovers readable information
                  (implies /F).
/L:size         NTFS only:  Changes the log file size to the specified number
of KILOBYTES.  If size is not specified, displays current
                  size.
/X              Forces the volume to dismount first if necessary.
All opened handles to the volume would then be invalid
                  (implies /F).
/I              NTFS only: PERFORMS a less vigorous check of index entries.
/C              NTFS only: Skips checking of cycles within the folder
                  structure.

The /I or /C switch REDUCES the amount of time required to run Chkdsk by
skipping certain checks of the volume.

What worked?  "chkdsk from the safe mode"?  "sfc /scannow"?  Both?
