Solve : computer won't boot in xp?

Answer»

I have a gateway E 4200 with a pentium 3 processor with 384 Mb system ram, and windows xp3.
I was downloading realplayer from the INTERNET and the computer froze. I turned it off and now it won't boot back up. When I turn it on I get the Gateway SCREEN which hangs for about ten seconds, then I get another gateway screen that displays info about the computer, fixes disc, atapi cd-rom, event log messages etc. At the bottom it has press esc to resume and press f1 to setup. Every time I press esc I get a warning message that reads WARNING remove the HP Personal Media Device or any other EXTERNAL media drive from the system before attempting system recovery. Sata will be erased if external drive is left in the system. Remove any such device and press any key to continue. I have no such device and when I press any key it repeats over againIs there a CD in the CD drive when doing this ? ?
Possibly the Gateway Recovery one ? ?

Solve : Mouse not moving on start screen?

Answer»

My computer froze LAST night so I held down the power button to restart it.  The computer TOOK about 5min to get to the starting screen with my name on it.  When it does finally get to the starting screen, the mouse won't move.  I know it is working because the laser on it lights up whenever I move the mouse.  I tried switching my mouse and keyboard to another usb port but still get the same problem.  I ALSO tried to start in in safe mode but it still gives me the same problem.  I also made sure everything on the inside of my computer was in properly, nothing is loose.  Please help me, I have lots of stuff I need to do (schoolwork) and need my computer asap.  Thanks in advance. If it's a USB mouse some of them won't respond until Windows finishes loading all it's drivers...
Everyone should have a PS2 mouse and keyboard.

Solve : BSOD Errors?

Answer»

Yea I've been using speed fan for a whil now. Nvidia 6600 runs hot according to Nvidia website and 60-70c idle can be normal but mine is usualy 60-65 EVEN on load.

Also the 512 chip was giving me problems again and was plenty cool. But it seems like something else to me.

When I got the computer it had two 256mb sticks of ram. I bought a new stick of 1gb Patriot ram and had all kinds of problems. I returned it and got another and it worked well for several months until I purchased the second 1gb Kinston ram. At this point the Patriot ram tested bad so I exchanged it for 1gb Kinston ram. With my GFX card being 128mb it seems to put my computer over the 2gb ram limit and lots of problems. So I swapped my parents computer one of my 1gb and took their 512MB Kingston that is not more than 1 year old.

The board is kinda a bad design because the gfx card and the cpu are both very close to the ram. AGP slot being at the top.

It ran somewhat fine for a few months with 1gb and 512mb. Can this sustained temperature of 110F ruin the ram?

My board is saposed to take 2gb and the problems always seem to come using more than 1gb. Is there a setting or jumper somewhere that could be set wrong?

Thanks man I know I am long winded :p

[attachment deleted by admin]I wouldn't worry about video card at 60C something, but something else is too warm.
SpeedFan is not always easy to read, but I suspect Temp2 is your CPU.
Let's double check.

Download, and install Everest Ultimate Edition 4.6: http://www.lavalys.com:8081/everestultimate460.exe
Enter following registration code (Help>Enter product key) to make it fully functional:
RHGJE-54X47-HML9C-V498I-UUMVI
(it's all legal, the above version has been recently offered as a free download)
Expand Computer, click on Sensor
What info do we have there?I'll try the software but I just found out through bios that temp2 is cpu I thought cpu was temp1. The AMD XP 3000+ Has a high heat tolerance like 85c and I see lots of people runing 50-55. Mine is usualy 45 but I have been fooling around with fans and its SUMMER time. What is exact model of that Athlon (CPU-Z: http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php)?
I don't see any Athlon 3000 max temp higher than 70C.Its a AMD Athlon XP 3000+

*censored* if I cant find the site now from AMD. and I cant recall exactly except mine has higher tolerance than all or most. I know its not less than 70c. Alot of forums are saying 85c for all XP models.I've never SEEN any desktop processor max temp at 85C.
If you look here: http://users.erols.com/chare/elec.htm, most desktop CPUs max temps don't exceed 70C, with only few exemptions, like Athlon 64 X2 at 78C. That's the highest.Heres a pdf the example at the bottom is AMD XP 3000+ with a die temperature of 85. Maybe you are looking at something besides the broke temperature :p

From your link
AMD mobile Athlon XP-M        Max. Case Temp.  95° C

Its possible I dont know *censored* I am looking at :pIs this laptop?heh, forgot my internet cut out trying to post reply and here I was waiting :p

My computer is a PC. I had to replace the thermal past as I cleaned the heat sink and had to re-use what was there for a day or so. Could have contributed to the higher temps also trying to get fans in best pattern. I think I got it though the systems only been on for 10 mins.

[attachment deleted by admin]Looks pretty good Yea its about 42c now and holding. How hot is bad for it? I always leave my comp on but its summer time and I turn my ac off when I leave so temps go up a little.I'd start to worry, if it goes over 60CSo if it goes to 50'sh when im not around is that ok or is it BETTER off to power it down. My phone runs off the comp so I like to have it on :pwell there could be numerous reason of BSOD Errors and other erros in you pc that always is a battle to fight hard but you just need the exact tool to fix it time ago my pc was diferent and was so bad erros that i havent not idea but one friend give me this web to buy one program that veryfy and infor about errors in you pc even fix it with no problems i have it since 3 years ago and my pc is very good when my pc is having some kind of error or is slow just run it and fix it is realy nice if here is the web where i buy it  [Llink Removed]Thanks man, I got the BSOD figured out, it is the ram. Going to close this and start new one to figure out the ram problem. Peace all thanks for the helps!!!

Solve : Good FREE spam filter?

Answer»

That won't mess up my registry will it??No it won't. I did the last thing you sent me, restarted the COMPUTER and as soon as I clicked on my OE, it popped up again... I don't think you can outsmart those people.  They want me to buy Spam Fighter.  It is just terribly annoying and I probably will have to end up uninstalling the whole program. It is WORKING well, and hate to do that..I have an IDEA, it usually works for me on different products, it won't END the problem.

Every time that pop-up appears it might get re-activated (making the pop-up appear again) when you click on the option that lets you keep using your computer. The thing you should try is, let the pop-up show once, but don't click on it, just drag that WINDOW down to a corner where it doesn't disturb you, it won't appear again until you clicked on the option that allows you to continue using that free trial of their services.

I hope that you can still use the program with the pop-up activated.

All the best,

Tranc3rOkee Dokee, I sure will try that and report back...Reporting back.  I tried pulling that down to below my task bar, and it works.  I don't get the pop-up's because it is still open... YAAAAAAYYYYY!!! I guess if one thing doesn't work, then try something else lol... So far this is working.

Solve : Can ping & browse by IP, can't ping or browse by URL?

Answer»

Hello,
one of my friend has had this tough little problem for close to a week now, the title sums it up.
OutlookExpress cannot find servers (I haven't tried but suspect REPLACING servers name by ip would fix it temporarly
He's running XP pro sp2* standalone on a cable modem, the ISP use dynamic IP & DNS, the only connection listed is LAN

I have already spent close to 2 hours on the phone trying to help fixing it, & I am pretty much out of ideas
Here's what I've tried already:

Firefox

IE7 without addons

(regular) IE7 reset advanced settings

Was running no proxy, so tried auto detect

Safe mode w/networking

Msconfig: disable all non-MS services & startups

Netsh winsock reset catalog

Ipconfig /flushdns

Tried disabling avast a/v; could not because of a password request, resolved to uninstall avast

SFC /scannow

Compared all properties of TCP/IP to my working computer

Tried OpenDNS instead of default blanks

Disable/enable LAN

Repair connection (XP report all's fine)

Disable/enable network card tru device mgr

Tried to use System Restore, but it was turned off...;o(

Used Spybot LSP tool to compare with my comp; only difference found: he's got an extra NS PROVIDER line about Bonjour service (Apple Ipod related)

I am now at the point where I will ask him to bring the computer over to me
Any ideas welcome

XP pro sp2*: windows update downloaded sp3, but failed to install successfully days prior to the URL problem
Is the DNS set to static or automatic?Looks to me as if the Domain Name Server used by your ISP is not resolving the URLs. This would explain why you are able to browse by ip address but not by URL. I know 3 different causes for this situation, all of which have happened to me in the past:

1) The ISP has changed the DNS address without telling you.

2) Your settings for DNS have been lost for some reason. This happened to me with a Netgear router once.

3) Your ISP's DNS servers are down. A little unlikely if this has been happening for more than a few days.

A call to the ISP should confirm the addresses for the DNS and they can probably confirm whether option 1 or 3 has happened. For option 2 you need to find where the DNS server settings are held for your particular setup.

Hope this helps a little.

GraymatterHi,
my friend's ISP is the same as my ISP, & I happen to work for the ISP; nothing whatsoever happens on our side with DNS (TRUST me, I would know, being in tech support dept), & the ISP we both use is USING automatic IP & DNS.
Also, my friend's pc is standalone, no router
My TCP/IP is set for auto dns as well as him; I had him try manual with OpenDNS just for the sake of it
On my pc, both automatic & manual (OpenDNS) works fine

I have nothing suggesting a problem on the ISP side at this point
Ok, it looks like you have all the bases covered there.

I have DONE a couple of google SEARCHES on this topic and a common thread seems to suggest that you may have a Winsock corruption.  Have a look at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/811259 and see if that helps at all.

Solve : STOP: C0000221 Unknown Hard Error \SystemRoot\System32\ntdll.dll?

Answer»

Hello,

My old custom made computer had Windows XP Pro INSTALLED on it (specs down below) and it was running just fine and then I started it up a few days later, disaster struck me.  This appeared in a blue screen: STOP: C0000221 Unknown Hard Error \SystemRoot\System32\ntdll.dll and I restarted it just in case it was a one off and it wasn't so I re-installed windows XP and it happened again when the setup restarted the computer and tried to continue.  I kept on restarting and some how it started the setup again but then came to ANOTHER setup error.
I WOULD like to know a few things:
How COME it started eventually
and
Could it be the hard drive that might have a error every now and then
and
Any other recommendations

Make sure, you select tool, which is appropriate for the brand of your hard drive.
Depending on the program, it'll create bootable floppy, or bootable CD.
If downloaded file is of .iso type, use ImgBurn: http://www.imgburn.com/ to burn .iso file to a CD, and make the CD bootable.

NOTE. If your hard drive is made by Toshiba, unfortunately, you're out of luck, because Toshiba doesn't provide any diagnostic tool.

Solve : Windows won't run with new motherboard and processor?

Answer»

I am having problems with getting Windows XP Home Edition to work.  I had to replace a fried power supply, motherboard, and PROCESSOR in a computer, but used the original hard drives.  When the computer boots now, the screen showing that Windows was not shut down correctly appears and when I select safe mode, a lot of not found files scroll by on the screen, finishing with a screen full of lines showing multi(0)DISK(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\windows\system32\drivers\.

I put the hard drives in a working computer, and I can get into safe mode.  If I put the hard drives from the working computer into the problem computer, Windows will start LOADING, there will be a brief flash of a blue screen, and the computer will reboot.

I installed another hard drive into the problem computer and installed Windows on it, and it works fine.  I can look at files on the original two problem drives with no problem.

The fried parts are an Intel D865PERL motherboard with a Celeron-D 2.93GHz processor.  The new motherboard is an ASUS P5N-E SLI and the processor is an Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 2.4GHz.

Any ideas on what I can do to get the original drives working with the new motherboard and processor?
You know as well as anyone you going to have to reinstall, Thar's so Meany new thing poping up on new board and lots of softwere and drivers looking for the old board that it's cuesing a conflict more then one like hundreds of hundreds you still have to re activated even if you did get it too work. Quote

You know as well as anyone you going to have to reinstall

Reinstall what??

Windows is probably not finding the drivers and so forth to RUN the new system board.  See if there's utility  programs on the disk that came with the system board which will install the chipset drivers.

It may come down to having to reinstall Windows on the hard drive so that it recognizes the new hardware -- however, wait for other input -- there may be ways around it of which I am not aware. Quote from: Aegis on October 05, 2008, 11:08:39 PM

The reality is that as far as Windows is concerned, new motherboard=new computer. Reinstall Windows.

Thanks.  I had hoped it would not come to that, but I guess that's the way it goes.Another option is a Repair Install of XP...

If done properly it will BOOT on the new system you install the new drivers and all your Data and programs are intact...

Solve : hibernate vs shut down?

Answer»

is it advisable to hibernate my PC instead of shutting it down? What do you mean "advisable"?
advisable - worthy of being recommended or suggested; prudent or wise; "such action is neither necessary nor advisable"; "extreme caution is advisable"; "it is advisable to telephone first"

hope this HELPED! I do know what the word "advisable" means; I am a native English speaker.  I did not ask "What does "advisable" mean?". I asked 'What do you mean [by] "advisable"?' I asked that question because I am not SURE what drool means. The question is ambiguous. He or she might mean "Is hibernation BETTER than shutting down?" or "Are there any reasons to prefer hibernation or shutting down?".

I think the answer is that if you hibernate then when you power up again the system starts much QUICKER, but some systems can show problems with SATA disks refusing to wake up. Try it with your system and if it works OK then go ahead.

Solve : XP SP3??

Answer»

I need to reinstall SP3. I tried to uninstall it first but it won't let me. It went through the procedure and the very last step it "error can't find ..." and canceled.

Can I reinstall SP3 again right over the existing? will it say "You already have this update", is there a work around if it does?Try reinstalling it.
If it does the same thing try re-downloading XP3 because the file you downloaded may have got corrupted. Why do you need to reinstall Service Pack 3? Did you MESS something up with it? Quote

It went through the procedure and the very last step it "error can't find ..." and canceled.
that doesn't explain why you need to reinstall.

Does it still list SP3 in your System properties? If so it's still installed. Quote from: jlexen on July 08, 2009, 05:42:08 PM

Oh, I see...

When you uninstalled, did you follow the steps that Microsoft told you to follow?

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/950249

If so, it seems that a file that was needed to complete the uninstall was not found or corrupted.

Can you please check if you still have SP3 actually running (Start ---> Right-click My Computer ---> Properties, it should tell you on the window that opens up.sheesh let me rephrase this, obviously some of you are mixed up...

I tried to UNINSTALL sp3, I got an error, it wouldn't let me uninstall. I want to know if I can do a REINSTALL without uninstalling it first.

the reason I need to reinstall SP3, I have some missing or corrupted JET files, My Access crashes and all programs that use an access-based file system won't even open, the version of JET I have is only available with installing SP3reinstall the Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC)

here's a guide:

http://www.technipages.com/reinstalling-mdac-in-xp-sp3.html

see if that helps.

As for SP3 reinstall, not SURE, as you said it encountered an error. Worth a SHOT. (have you tried?)Thanks... I went there and tried that method... no go... I also tried to reinstall SP3 without uninstalling it first, (over TOP) no go... (then later found out that is normal) I'm going to either do a factory OEM reinstall of the XP, or buy an XP cd and start from fresh. (I refuse to upgrade to Vista, I HATE Vista, my system couldn't handle it anyway.)

Solve : Is it harmful for xp??

Answer»

I am using  XP Pro (sp 2) .I have chanced the SETTING of system reservable  bandwidth from 20% to 0 (zero)% to increase the internet speed. Is it harmful for my computer?I don't want automatic update.I turn off auto update. So there is no need of bandwidth reservation. What is your thinking? no chance of damage. unlikely to speed up your connection, either.Like BC_Programmer SAID, no harm but most likely no benefit either.
And I would PERSONALLY keep automatic update on, in order to get security updates as fast as possible. But I know there's mixed feelings about letting Microsoft INSTALL updates automatically... So whatever suits you. Just remember to mark Patch Tuesdays in your calendar then.

Solve : Windows XP setup or registry config. question?

Answer»

Whenever I insert a USB/Thumb drive in a USP port, a new WINDOW pops up on my desktop that shows the contents of the the drive just inserted.   Other computers with XP that I use don't do this (and this ONE didn't until I started using a new Sandisk device).   To me this is annoying..   How do I change my system/configuration back so that these windows don't automatically pop up?    Thanks!!Click Start then choose My Computer.
Right click on the drive and select Properties.
Then choose the Autoplay tab near the top.
Now select an action to perform and choose Take no Action.
Then click Apply.

Good luck!JJ 3000 -  Thanks very much for your reply..   I tried this & then ejected the thumb drive - and reinserted it - but unfortunately it did not solve the problem.   (I had actually already tried changing this autoplay setting - but didn't get there same way you described.)   When you go to "Start" then "My Computer" - you have to have the thumb drive inserted, or you only see the hard drive partitions "C:", etc.. and the 2 CD/DVD drives.   I inserted the thumb drive (shows as "J:" in my config.)...  When you right click - and then select the 'autoplay' tab it lists several file TYPES (pictures, video, mixed media, etc..) and I believe you can set a default action (or "take no action") for each of these.  (I selected the latter for all of them.)   In any case when I did this  and then I "stopped" the thumb drive & reinserted it - the same window still automatically pops up on the desktop....    If you or anyone has other suggestions - they're greatly appreciated.      Thanks.Did you re-boot for the changes to take effect ? ?Yes...   I did reboot.   Still did not work.    Does anyone have any more ideas???    ALSO would appreciate if anyone would let me know whether your system always automatically has a window to pop up with its contents whenever you insert a thumb(USB) drive into a USB port??

Thanks,
JR

Solve : Windows ME Recovery?

Answer»

Hi there

I have a Sony VAIO PCG-FX101 running Windows ME. Currently it will not boot-up and none of the 4 startup options given in the MS-DOS Startup Menu work either. Selecting 'Normal' or 'Logged' modes simply restarts the laptop and returns it to the same menu. Selecting 'Safe Mode' or 'Step-by-step CONFIRMATION' prompts an immediate blue error screen "Windows protection error... System halted."

So I am looking to use the original Sony recovery CD, but I want to KEEP all my files/documents so I can transfer them to a new laptop.

Which recovery option will keep my files safe?

There is Standard Recovery or Advanced Recovery. I don't know what Standard Recovery will do? Under 'Advanced Recovery' it asks me whether to keep the current partitions or select new partition sizes, stating "By selecting new partition size, ALL data currently present on your hard disk will be removed!" But it doesn't say what the other selection will do... Don't quote me on this, but it's very similar to how the EMACHINE (Ghost recovery) runs.

Standard installation overwrites existing system files and SUPPOSEDLY (never take this to be a certainty) doesn't delete your personal documents (or sometimes creates a folder on the new partition with all of your files backed up into).

Advanced installation usually deletes everything and starts afresh. You may be able to create a new size for your partitions.

So, in short the standard installation would be your BEST bet to start with - but ALL manufacturers advise on backing up your data first. There is NO GUARANTEE it will SAVE anything.

Solve : To Restore or Not To Restore. That Is The Question?

Answer»

Ok everyone, I'm getting a little tee'd off because l keep getting all these niggly little (and sometimes serious) problems, keep posting questions everywhere on the forums, and waiting for replies. Please don't get me WRONG, l get all the right answers but am thinking can l be doing with all this hassle. From ye olde memory bank, my system used to be Windows 98, and l upgraded to Windows XP Home using their UPGRADE disk only.
A year ago l had one hel* of a problem, took the guys my upgrade disk and they somehow restored my system but took deep breaths in saying that this was only an upgrade disk, and it sure did cost me a small fortune!
(I had no programs to save before they restored as these were all on an external disk and could be recovered). The SITUATION is still the same.
I am finally changing from a dial up modem to adsl within the next week or so (yep, l LIVE so remote it's unbelievable, but they've finally upgraded the LINE so am looking forward to it).
I thought maybe a clean slate. Start from basics, reload all MS updates, to that of SP3 and IE8, and then l won't have to bother you with stupid questions on SOLVING problems on the fly?
So, how do l go about a complete restore with just this (genuine) Update disk?
Gosh, l hate to do this as it may be called bumping the thread which is never my intention.
"From ye olde memory bank, my system used to be Windows 98, and l upgraded to Windows XP Home using their UPGRADE disk only".
So l suppose all l want to know is can l rebulid a working system from an Upgrade disk or do l have to go back to Windows 98 and start again.

how do l go about a complete restore with just this (genuine) Update disk?
You can't. You need full version Windows CD.Thanks Broni for answering.
(Oh bu33er springs to mind)
So in my case, with this *censored* update disk, could l reformat the C drive, reinstall Windows 98 from my genuine disk and then apply the genuine upgrade disk and start over?
Sorry, just looking on the pessemistic side in case of a total system rebuild.
(just wondered how these computer shop guys did it with just my upgrade disk. that's all).
Have they got something l havn't?
Thanks

That's possible.
If, while installing XP, Windows partition was formatted as NTFS, you'll have to use bootdisk to remove that partition.
Once removed, you can boot from Windows 98 CD, create new partition, format it, and install 98.
Then, upgrade to XP.

Solve : Low Virtual Memory Problem?

First of all 8GB drive in REALITY is only 7.45GB BIG, so we're talking about 550MB "missing". Most likely in hidden, and system files.
Don't even worry about it. Nothing was stolen from your HD.

May I DELETED the files (40 MB) in the $AVG8.VAULT$ (Hidden Folder)?
Yes, you may.I suggest GETTING a larger HDD...you can then "clone" the old drive to the new one and all your data will be there...

Solve : Cannot boot XP after partition?

Answer»

Hello.  I posted this in another tech forum but I need a good answer.  Recently I attempted to partition my HDD for a dual-boot with XP Home Edition and Windows 7RC. I used the program EASEUS Partition Master to partition about half of my HDD for Win 7. Everything was working fine. It finished the partition and asked me to reboot. I got past my motherboard screen with the BIOS and Boot menus but then I get a black screen that says:

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
\system32\hal.dll.

Can anyone DIAGNOSE my problem? I have a feeling my computer does not know which partition to boot off of but I am not sure. I am very new to Operating systems so please explain in an easy to understand way.

Edit:  I forgot to mention I do NOT have the original XP Recovery CD.

Thanks a lot everyone!!!
If you have Windows CD...(if you don't have Windows CD, scroll down)

1. Insert your Windows XP CD into your CD and ASSURE that your CD-ROM drive is capable of booting the CD.
2. Once you have booted from CD, do NOT select the option that states: Press F2 to initiate the Automated System Recovery (ASR) tool.
You’re going to proceed until you see the following screen, at which point you will press the “R” key to ENTER the recovery console:

3. After you have selected the appropriate option from step two, you will be prompted to select a valid Windows installation (typically number “1″).
Select the installation number, and hit Enter.
If there is an administrator password for the administrator account, enter it and hit Enter (if asked for the password, and you don't know it, you're out of luck).
You will be greeted with this screen, which indicates a recovery console at the ready:

4. There are eight commands you must enter in sequence to repair your problem..
I will introduce them here, and then show the results graphically in the next six steps.
NOTE. Make sure, you press Enter after each command. Make sure, all commands are exact, including "spaces".
These commands are as follows:

CD..
ATTRIB -H C:\\boot.ini
ATTRIB -S C:\\boot.ini
ATTRIB -R C:\\boot.ini
del boot.ini
BOOTCFG /Rebuild

Note about the above command.
BOOTCFG /REBUILD command which searches for pre-existing installations of Windows XP and rebuilds sundry essential components of the Windows operating system, recompiles the BOOT.INI file and corrects a LITANY of common Windows errors.
It is very important that you do one or both of the following two things:
A.) Every Windows XP owner must use /FASTDETECT as OS Load Option when the rebuild process is finalizing.
B.) If you are the owner of a CPU featuring Intel’s XD or AMD’s NX buffer overflow protection, you must also use /NOEXECUTE=OPTIN as an OS Load Option.
For the Enter Load Identifier portion of this command, you should enter the name of the operating system you have installed.
If, for example, you are using Windows XP Home, you could type Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition for the identifier (it's not crucial, however what the name is, as long, as it's MEANINGFUL).
Here is your computer screen:

5. Following command verifies the integrity of the hard drive containing the Windows XP installation. While this step is not an essential function in our process, it’s still good to be sure that the drive is physically capable of running windows, in that it contains no bad sectors or other corruptions that might be the culprit:

CHKDSK /R

6. This last command writes a new boot sector to the hard drive and cleans up all the loose ends we created by rebuilding the BOOT.INI file and the system files. When the Windows Recovery Console asks you if you are Sure you want to write a new bootsector to the partition C: ? just hit “Y”, then Enter to confirm your decision:

FIXBOOT

7. It’s time to reboot your PC by typing
EXIT
and pressing Enter.

With any luck, your PC will boot successfully into Windows XP as if your various DLL, Hive, EXE and NTLDR errors never existed.

If you don't have Windows CD...
Download Windows Recovery Console: http://www.thecomputerparamedic.com/files/rc.iso
Download, and install free Imgburn: http://www.imgburn.com/index.php?act=download
Using Imgburn, burn rc.iso to a CD.
Boot to the CD...let it finish loading.
When the "Welcome to Setup" screen appears, press R to start the Recovery Console.
Then, follow instructions from Step #3 above.Sorry for the late reply.  I have tried to make a Windows Recovery CD as you said and tried to boot off of it.  I changed all of the settings in my BIOS to boot from the optical drive and tried to reboot.  Everything was the same but after the motherboard screen, I got a solid black screen and my Optical and HDD indicator lights were flashing quickly in unison for about 10 minutes then the error message I had before came up!     Did I do something wrong when writing the CD?  I also tried to boot into Ubuntu to add the missing hal.dll file manually and got the same thing.

Edit:  I thought it would be good to mention my computer is made by eMachines.  I'm not sure if that could be my problem. If it's eMachines, I'd start with getting new power supply unit. They're notorious for being underpowered, and malfunctioning. From his fist post it is mot clear if you had Win RC7 already on the HDD.

The only way I have been able to dual boot with Win 7 TC is to start out with Windows XP already installed and running well. Then I use the same PM he named to re size the partition to a smaller size. After it is all done, and working well, I boot up the Win 7 RC DVD and follow the instructions.  So far I have been successful two out of three tries. Quote from: Broni on July 09, 2009, 05:04:48 PM

For what I have, the power supply is fine.  (450watts)  One thing I should mention is that I also have been getting a CMOS battery failure message durring a boot.  To the person above, I have not yet installed Win 7.  I was going to install after the partition. Quote

Solve : Sound skips during playback?

Answer»

I have a problem that's plagued me for nearly 2 years and it drives me crazy.
Whenever I PLAY sound, my the playback skips as the hard drive reads/writes.  In other words, the light comes on, and the playback skips.  I'm not sure when this problem started exactly.

This phenomenon happens when I stream audio or video from the internet, play mp3's (in itunes and winamp and Windows media), even when I boot up, the boot sound skips.

I get AROUND this while streaming by waiting for the whole thing to buffer first, then when I play the video the hard drive doesn't run, and I'm skip-free. (Until the HD gets busy)

I've tried reinstalling my audio driver (I have the most current version now)
Setting my page file to a constant 3300 MB (3057 mb is recommended)
And I'm stumped.  A little HELP?

System info:
Sony Vaio VGN fs-740 laptop
Windows XP Home Ver. 2002 SP2
1.73 GHZ
2 GB  Ram
68 GB Hard drive with 10 GB free
3300 MB page file
Realtek HD Audio with current driver

Right click your task bar at the bottom of your screen and select Task Manager.

How many processes are running straight after boot up, and what is your CPU usage at?I can trim down to 50 processes, but right now I'm running 60.  Sony vaios COME with a metric assload of bloatware.
CPU usage hovers around 5-20 Percent normally.  When I stream audio, it jumps to 10-30 percent.  youtube, it jumps to 40-60 percent.

Just when it should have kicked in, the error msg: Windows can't start because of a missing or corrupted ntoskrnl.exe file.Re-install file. I've chk'd the FAQ and the solutions for fixing this involve rebooting from a program CD. the issue is that just as the msg comes up "PRESS any key to boot from CD", the keyboard suddenly goes dead. Whenever I try to open a pdf file I always get a spreadsheet. I NEVER USED to have this problem. Any suggestions or download fixes would be greatly appreciated.

Example: Whenever trying to open an instuction manual I always get a spreadsheet instead of the instruction manual.

Thank You Very MUCH for your help. It will be greatly appreciated.
BuckusWhen you double-click on a PDF file, does Microsoft Excel open - is that what you mean?  Do you get any error MESSAGES at the time? When trying to open a PDF file a pop-up from Microsoft Works
says:

           read-only document.
The name and path may be invalid, the document may

I strongly suspect that uninstalling an reinstalling your favourite PDF reader will fix this.  If you don't have a favourite, try Foxit Reader.Rob Pomeroy,
THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!!!

I uninstalled Adobe Reader 9 and uninstalled Acrobat. Then installed FOXIT Reader. My problem SEEMS to be solved. I was able to open an instruction manual that I was unable to open before. THANKS AGAIN!

I'm just not sure what effects uninstalling Acrobat will cause. I don't remember why I originally installed it.

Rob your the best! Thank You So Much!
Buckusyou uninstalled adobe reader and then uninstalled Acrobat. Maybe that's causes a problem? Just having adobe reader only? That's what I have and it works fine.Glad you got it sorted Buckus.

Solve : Video Playback Problem?

Answer»

Hi everybody,

Can anyone offer any advice or suggestions regarding the following media player video playback problem?

Before continuing, it may be worth mentioning that the above problem first appeared immediately following a computer-hanging-at-shutdown problem which I finally managed to fix via, I think, a Windows update!

I say I think because I'm not exactly sure what it was that fixed the problem as a result of TRYING a number of things including:

1 – SYSTEM Restore
2 – Registry “Wait to Kill Service” adjustment
3 – “Startup” Program adjustment
4 – Software removal

The only reason for mentioning the computer hanging problem is the suspicion that it may have something to do with the current problem.

Anyway, to the present problem: Upon the computer starting up I get a “Found new hardware wizard” - despite the fact that I haven't recently installed any new hardware! After clicking to allow Windows to connect to Windows update to search for software, which shows as “Unknown”, I get a “Hardware not installed because Windows can't find new software” message.

Please note that this problem only affects video playback. Audio playback is fine.

Finally, inserting a disc into both of my drives brings up the following:

Error:

Playback Failure: DVDRead could not open disc “E”.
Your input can't be OPENED: Unable to open the MRL “dvd://E:”
Check log for details.

Sorry for the length of the query and please let me whether I've neglected any other important information.

Once again, any help would be much appreciated. Let's start with the basics then. Have you done Anti-virus, Malware full system scans? Is this a Windows media player we're talking about?Hi guys and thanks in advance for your help.

Solve : Win 2K User Environment error?

Answer»

Recently, I have been experiencing a User Environment error when Windows 2000 boots.  The error indicates that my system will be using a default user profile and cites a corrupt registry as the reason for this change.
The system seems to run fine under the default and I do not notice any DIFFERENCE between the ORIGINAL profile and the default.  However, the warning dialog box is a bit annoying.
I believe what started this problem was using MSCONFIG to eliminate a non-essential program from the startup list.  I checked the file online and found it was not necessary to the normal operation of the system.
Any idea for a coarse of action to deal with this type of problem?

ThanksPost full error message.
What was the startup, you removed? The title bar for the warning is:  User Environment
The message is:
Windows cannot load the users profile but has logged you on as the default profile for the system.
DETAIL - The configuration registry database is corrupt.

I was attempting to free up system memory by eliminating non-essential startup items and had deleted NIlauncher from the startup list.
The .exe is associated with an application called Net-It Launcher (a web publishing s/w application from Informative Graphics Corporation).

As of now, the computer only has ONE user account (the ADMINISTRATIVE account).  There seems to be no difference running the system under the default vs. the original profile (just the annoying warning during acquisition of the user's profile.

Yes.Cloth +RAM = static.

Make sure you are properly grounded by touching the metal case.
Remove 1 stick of RAM...leave the one closest to the CPU in.
Power up enter setup and select Load Fail Safe Defaults...
Press F10 to Save CHANGES and Exit which will re-boot the machine.

If this does not work repeat the above procedure after swapping out the stick that's in there for the one you removed.

If it does work Power down and add the 2nd stick of RAM Quote from: Aegis on October 04, 2008, 05:39:04 AM

Solve : Tried to use Recovery Disk and NOTHING?

Answer»

Okay so I don't know where else to turn. I gave my 17year old sister my laptop for college and she broke it... Myspace or something and she caught a nasty virus. Now I bought a recovery disk designed for this machine through sony and nothing... Please help, she really needs this computer and I can't afford to buy her a new one. It's a Sony Vaio PCG-FRV27 Notebook; it runs on Windows XP; It has 40GB Hard Drive and 512 MB DDR; Intel Pentium 4 Processor 2.66 Ghz (Probably too much info but I'm not sure what you need)... Okay so the problem; it was messing up big time and kept shutting off so I made a recovery disc (or so I thought) and did the sony recovery wizard. When I restarted this message appeared [ INF file txtsetup.sif is corrupt or missing, status 14. Setup cannot continue. Press any key to exit. ] then I press a key and it restarts only to show the same message. I called sony and ordered a new recovery disk once I put it into the machine it started to load (about 3 min or so) then it prompted me to take the disk out and hit okay, then it will restart  and configure or something. So I do and it restarts and the same black screen with the message listed above [INF file etc.] appears. I called sony and the lady told me to push F2 a whole BUNCH of times at startup so I do and computer configurations or whatever popped up she said to set it to default settings, so I did. And now when I pop in the disk it doesn't even recognize it or pretend to load it just goes straight to the message listed above. Sony offered to (try) and fix it for a minimum of $279 plus TAX, shipping and handling. and as I stated above I can't afford it; not to mention a new one doesn't cost mush more than that. I already bought her a new printer and laptop bag and router, wireless card etc. for her birthday (she turns 18 in Nov.) I really need help.... Any suggestions, I'll try anything.....Please and thank you... I know it's long so I apologize for that; just wanted to give enough info...SassyMom,Welcome to CH forums. Others will be along shortly to help you with your problem laptop. However even though you have provided most of the info required it will be necessary to answer a couple more questions. Does this computer currently have any data on it that if lost would be a problem? IE: personal important data or pictures, etc. Do you have the original Windows Operating System CD for that computer?Prior to it's present deteriorated condition had you ever attempted a "restore POINT" process? truenorthOkay to answer your questions. Yes there's a ton of stuff on this computer that would be great to save but at this point I have decided it doesn't matter... to save the computer is MOST important. (Sure I'll lose some pictures and files but I'll live) I was not given any discs when I bought this computer nor the computer I'm using right now (which is only a month old). They said you could make a recovery disc with the wizard which I thought I did (but it didn't work) And yes I had on repeated occasion tried the system restore to a previous date ( I went as far back as it would let me (which was May) but I don't think it worked because nothing changed. Let me know if there's any more info you need. and thank you so much for your help, it is greatly apreciated!txtsetup.sif problems usually point to a hardware failure such as a faulty CD drive or possibly a scratched or dirty or damaged disk. You have tried 2 different brand new disks is that right? (Which makes me suspect hardware problems. Simply put that may mean "busted computer".) You might be able to find a repair shop that could swap out the CD drive and see if it makes the problem go away, at a cost of less than $279 plus tax.

What I don't understand is it actually worked before I tried to run the recovery... The CD drive and everything... But it would shut off (because it detected a virus) is what it would say. But now that I've tried to use the recovery disc; nothing. Can the recovery disc break the cd drive or hard drive? I'm really stuck!Take a look here....

Keep in mind this will walk you though the steps to wipe the machine clean and start over as if from the factory....

http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.php?t=148948

Kind of ironic, that the outcome of the thread that you posted, Spoiler, was that, having gone through all the steps, the OP's CD drive needed replacing, just like I said just now. Personally I think the least grief would be to take the laptop to a repair shop and for $50-$60 (deductible off the repair bill) get a repair estimate.

Thank you all for your help.. I am taking your advise and have an appointment to have it looked at this afternoon. I will let you know the outcome! Thanks again!can't hurt to download and burn some rescue disks:

There are plenty of other ways to access an unbootable system, if this doesn't help.  These are all free.  I hope you get this before you spend money. Thanks again for all of your help... Unfortuantely, I went the easy way and got it fixed by a professional; it cost $225. but he doubled the MEMORY! I think it was a good deal, I don't know But, thanks again all of you; it's cool to know that there's PEOPLE out there who just want to help! You guys Rock, and girls ... I will definetely be back again... Because I am very computer (not smart, hee hee)SassyMom, Well of course we are all pleased that you once again have a fully functioning computer. However it is too bad you had to pay out your hard earned dollars to the extent you did.As a point of interest and perhaps education to others did your technician tell you what the actual problem was?truenorth

Device DRIVER folder, maybe? Idk..'con' is one of a NUMBER of reserved names that aren't allowed as file/folder names.

While the folder can't be made through Windows Explorer, it can be 'forced' through the command prompt by using:

md\\.\\c:\\con

Likewise, it can be removed:

rmdir\\.\\c:\\conhttp://forums.majorgeeks.com/showpost.php?p=1032918&postcount=19

Quote
CON is the console DEVICE and as such represents an operating system protected string. In the old days of DOS before EDIT or NOTEPAD, there was an easy way for a tech to create a batch file from the keyboard. Using the command line syntax:
C:\>COPY CON C:\test.bat<enter>
ECHO Everything that I'm now typing would be entered into the TEST.BAT file. To terminate this redirection requires that you press the character combo ctrl-z. On your screen it would look like this: ^Z<ctrl-Z><enter>

Above is a legitimate batch file that will run on any windows machine that can open a command console. If you want to duplicate this for yourselves, where you see <enter> hit the Enter key, and <ctrl-Z> hit the combo Ctrl-Z. ALSO, the BOLD text is what you actually type. After it's built you'll see "1 file(s) copied" and you can then type at the prompt:
C:\>test<enter> ( the text below will appear )
Everything that I'm now typing would be entered into the TEST.BAT file. To terminate this redirection requires that you press the character combo ctrl-z. On your screen it would look like this: ^Z

Solve : OOPS-dell operating disc in toshiba?

Answer»

Please help.  My daughter put a dell operating DISC in her Toshiba Satellite P 25 and now cannot get in without a new code key.  She does not currently have any internet access and I'm trying to help her long distance.  Any ideas or solutions? did she reinstall windows? If you are looking for a Product Key we don't do that here...I'm not looking for a code key, just help.  I do not know what she needs to do to resolve this.  I think that she had lost the disc to reinstall windows and a neighbor gave her the dell disc to try. Now she says she can start in safe mode and can get to her HOME page, but no further. She should be able to get the drivers from the Toshiba site, she could use a different computer and burn the drivers to DISK, then INSTALL them on the laptop.Repair Install of XP

She will NEED an MS XP CD that matches whatever version she has...
And as stated above she will need to re-install all the laptop drivers...

Best of Luck.Thank all who responded!  My daughter reinstalled her toshiba driver & the xp disc.  Her computer is up and running again!

Solve : Changing windows title bar color with disabled themes?

Answer»

I force windows classic mode on our domain. In ORDER to completely disable theme selection, you have to remove Themes & Appearance. This CREATES a small problem for us since one of our software packages runs an inactive window at the bottom of the screen with some PATIENT information on it. We're unable to read the TEXT because it BLENDS too much with the inactive title color.

Question is, is there a vbs or bat I can use to manually change an inactive title color or a way to allow the appearance but disable the Windows & Buttons selector?

Solve : about windows xp...?

Answer»

Hi.

More of a request for information really than help - recentle INSTALLED SP2 for XP.  Had trouble doing so until I read on the microsoft website that you should disable anti-virus software before downloading the update.  Disabled Avast and it worked a treat.

My question is, why do you have to disable the anti virus software?  As a layman, I would have thought that AV software would be at its most useful when downloading STUFF onto your computer - wouldn't want to DOWNLOAD a virus, right?  Can't find a satisfactory answer anywhere about this.

As I say........just curious!

Cheers guys.

FeenixSystem UPDATES (especially service packs) deal with crucial SYSTEM files in order to update them. Viruses and so forth deal with crucial system files to infect them. Anti-virus software can't tell the difference, and so would stop both- thus the failure to update properly with AV installed.

Hope that makes sense.Yep, got it mate - cheers.

Solve : My Windsows XP Won't start?

Everything I turn on my computer it starts in the black screen where I have the options to start it: with Safe mode, last known config, and normally

All ways of starting it lead to it to the screen where the green BAR is loading but soon after, the whole thing restarts/reboots itself and i find myself back at that black screen

I cannot login, reformat it, or do anything to restore it

Can anyone please tell me how to fix it and what the problem is?

Thank You

BTW I lack a Window XP CD Home Edition Disk
Using your Windows CD, try to do a repair install.and you can see your device as video card , ram ... i think them can meet problem.

You can open and clean them . then , you plug them very reliably.Any recent changes to the computer, or it just happened?Recently anything happen? Not that I know of

My gparents gave me this computer SPECIFICALLY because it WONT start so they decided that it was worthless

I have tried using the WinXP Home Edition CD-Rom and made 6 Floppy Drives and used them but when I go into the recovery console PART, the computer stays on the same blue screen examining this one disk forever

Basically I feel that this computer is hopeless, plz helpWhat does the blue screen say?
What's the brand, and model of the computer?

Do you have any disks? Recovery CD, Windows CD?

I'm confused here. The first post was edited to say they don't have a DISC, but then they said they used a disc. I'm a bit lost here, is there a CD or not?Update: I used a Windows XP Home Edition SP2 CD-Rom, made the 6 Floppies and was able to go to the recovery console, but from there I have no clue how to work the command prompt looking thing

Alternatively I could choose to install the Windows XP onto my computer but for some reason my computer never ever recognizes my CD and tells me to insert the CD...again

Basically I'm screwed

Uh, I went on to microsoft to download the installation cd so I guess I now have a copy of windows xp home edition sp2 Quote
I went on to microsoft to download the installation cd
Did you say torrent?
Micro$oft doesn't provide Windows downloads.well no, I went specifically on the microsoft site and found the windows xp setup disk and downloaded it

You mean the 6 set of floppies for the Recovery Console ? ?Either that the download for the bootable floppy for computers that can't BOOT from a CD.
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=e8fe6868-6e4f-471c-b455-bd5afee126d8

But there is no download for the actual Windows XP CD.Vivace there are 2 commands you can try to fix this with...
Load the 6 set of floppies which will load the RC and leave you at a command prompt...
At the prompt type in fixboot and hit Enter...
Remove any floppies and CD's and re-boot...
If this doesn't work repeat the above except this time type in fixmbr and hit Enter...
Best of Luck.

Can you point me to a LINK on how to make this work please...

Srh?

So, when you plug in the camera, does Windows see it?Yes,the window  camera connected COMES up for the canon EOS D40 (correct camera) and it used to give options eg; ACDSee, Windows Picture Viewer or Picasa 2,

Now that window is blank.  So to download pics I go to a program directly and down LOAD from there... this still does not resolve the SRH issue

Solve : Frozen system?

Answer»

Do you have your windows cd?Sure do...you're going to ask me to do a repair install?

Please say no.yes

Why not? A repair should not hurt any of your data. If, by some ILL fortune, it does, you have another hard drive with all of your stuff on it right? The fact that one hard drive works and the other doesn't, makes me suspect that there is someting wrong with your C drive. If it is a virus you may be looking at a clean install. although it could be something simple, like your hard drive's data cable.

give this a look
http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

did you download speedfan?
I own a copy of that.  Repair installs have always ENDED in DISASTER for me...usually meaning I end up having to do a complete install which is a nightmare.  I'm not worried about the data - just the time it takes to reinstall everything and it's never really the way it was.  That's the main - and only - reason I put the OS on another drive but even that didn't work in this case.

No one has the DOS command for a restore?  That is my last hope.  I can't find the damned thing - I put it in a special place because I know I'd need it someday and now I can't find it!

No, I don't have speedfan.  What (and where) is that? Quote from: JJ 3000 on May 16, 2009, 12:24:22 AM

What cant you find? The DOS command that will do a restore on your SYSTEM.  I had it written down and have used it several times in the past.  It's very useful.

I looked up speedfan.  I'm using a server case with six fans so I don't think temp. is a problem. So here's my story...

I put the XP CD in the CD drive but decide to boot off the HD.  It works.  I then clone the C to the D to preserve what's working.

Next day it doesn't work.  C drive stops at the black Windows screen, the D drive stops immediately after that when everything goes blank.

Finally decide to do a repair install as per the info provided.

When I try to do it on the C drive it stalls while inspecting that drive.  So I boot off the D drive and it tells me that there is corruption in the C drive.  So I pull the plug on the C drive and boot XP off the CD drive.

Turns out there is no 'R' option  and I end up doing a full install on the D drive.  My worst nightmare (39 minutes).

I boot up and I get the original screen back with all the original icons!  *censored*

I don't know how long this will last - it is a bit odd (e.g. 45 sec. wait on the mb screen waiting to go into BIOS) - and there is no internet.  Of course tomorrow none of this may work - again.  But until then, this is The Way It Is.

Should I now clone D to C or wait?
So here is my SITUATION:

When I boot up after the XP install following the mb screen I get 3 (count 'em) THREE options under Select Operating System.

All 3 say MS Windows Professional

If I pick Door Nr. 1 I get the blue sky/grass scene reminiscent of when one does a complete install of XP - which I did.

If I pick Door Nr. 2 I go back to the install procedure where I'm waiting with 39 minutes to go.

If I pick Door Nr. 3 I go back to my original screen with all of my old icons.

I want Door Nr. 3.  But how do I get rid of the other two doors?bumpDid you try to change the BOOT.INI file?

This file is responsible for boot sequence. You can delete the other 2 "doors" from the file.

Control panel --> System --> Advanced --> Startup and Recovery Settings

Solve : Update Filename in Header - Word 2007?

I need to add FileName to header..

I can almost do with Quick Parts insert Field "FileName" in to headers, The only problem it does not update unless printed or previewed.

I need this to update on SAVED and CLOSED, so do I have to create a macro to do this.

I already have a macor to save file in dated folders which works GREAT.. pretty much don't want to have to mess with them.

Prefebably a sigle overall macro

I found this script for Word 2003 for mac, so I'm looking for similar for word 2007 for pc

However:
Whats the keystroke to update a field (right click don't work while recording a macro)

And how do incorparate a macro to run on doc closeyou'd gone BEYOND the understanding of the program to my knowdlge, so in other words I cant help you since I dont know.  Thought that it was a simple header error.

Solve : Can't reformat, partition, orerase my hard drive.?

Answer»

I am RUNNING Windows XP, SP2. Got a mate to reinstall it so it's all new and fast and there are no programs installed at all.

I want to erase/reformat/wipe the (only) harddrive so there is nothing on it at all.
I'm having trouble.
I can't delete it, and I can't create a new partition to allow me to delete this one.
See link below for screenshots
Any ideas?

http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v220/meisha_ben_double/?action=view&current=diskmanage.gifIt's listed as formatted already.
GET Windows CD, and reinstall OS.Maybe format was the wrong word.
I want to wipe everything off it, including all the windows XP stuff and all the system data.

I don't own a windows XP cd....and the reason for wiping off? You wanna give the computer AWAY, or....what are your plans?I bought a laptop with Vista, and the guy gave me a copy of windows 7 on a CD with it.

I wanna keep Vista on my laptop, but I want too check out this windows 7, so I figure I will put it on here. But can't do it with XP on it.You lost me totally.
What is installed right now? Vista, or XP?XP is currently installed.
I want to wipe the data and XP files from the harddrive so I can then install windows 7, which I have a CD for.You realize, that current Windows 7 VERSION is a trial only, and it'll expire on August 1st, don't you?Eh, I realised it was a trial. I didn't know it expired...
I'll go look it up, but what do you mean by expire? It wont... WORK? >_ Quote from: BenBooth on July 07, 2009, 09:42:02 PM

Did he charge you for that CD? If he did, you got scammed. Slap him in the face and get your money for the CD!

http://windows7news.com/tag/windows-7-final/ <--- this site shows the release date for the Official Windows 7 which is October 23rd 2009. So Windows 7 hits the markets in October 23 2009.I just had a look at the windows site, I now actually understand what its all about.
It appears I was a bit nieve.

In any case, if I purchase windows 7 in october, will I have the same problem I am having now? Or will I be able to upgrade from XP to 7 just like any other OS.

And no, he did not charge me for it. He just gave it to me and said to try it out.No, you can't upgrade from XP to Win 7.
It has to be a clean install.
You'll have to back up the data, boot from Win 7 DVD, and it'll let you remove XP partition, format it, and install Win 7.

Solve : Accidentally deleted my Windows XP user account?

Answer»

My brother has DELETED my USER account for Windows XP including all of my photos.  Is there anyway I can restore my user account and/or recover the photos I have lost?

I feel like crying.  You can TRY doing a System Restore...if a restore point was created prior to your brother deleting the account and your files.

If this doesn't work, you may need to locate FILE recovery software to see if the photos that were deleted are recoverable. In future, learn how to protect your computer from IMMATURE children. Learn about setting passwords.
