Solve : Need all of your help...?

Answer»

OK so i got a SECOND SATA hard drive for my computer, cloned my old hard drive to the new one, then cleaned off the old one... so right now I have:

SATA 320GB (Win XP)
SATA 160GB (Empty)

I have partitioning software to partition for something I want to download:  Windows 98SE.  I know i have posted a couple of times on this issue, but I really want to see if its possible.  I saw that it is possible, but seems difficult.  First off, I ended up putting UBUNTU on the empty hard drive(i dont mind taking it off.  What if i partitioned FAT32 on the second hard drive, installed 98 on that partition, then used my SUPER GRUB disk to make it so that I can triple boot.  I figure since xp and 98 are on different hard drives, it wouldnt cause too much of a problem.  Any and all feedback is appreciated

Solve : Computer siezes during startup?

Answer»

I have an older Sony Vaio PCV lx 800 that was recently retired from my office for unreliability. I figured I would take a shot at repairing it for my son who is 4, to keep him out of my machine ( also a vaio - I am a big Sony fan)

I took HOME the machine and took it apart and blew all the dust out of it - there was a lot. I took apart the power supply and paid special attention to its fan, which after a good cleaning no longer made that horrible whirring noise. I reinstalled the operating system. It fired up fine - no trouble at all, the first few times, and then started having problems. What finally winds up happening is that I get a blue background screen ( not the blue screen of death, just a nice turquoise splash) and SOMETIMES an error message saying improper shutdown detected - checking disks - but the little disk icon on the screen doesn't move like it should. Sometimes I also get the Macaffe virus protection logo. So I sit in front of this for a while and then try a Control-alt-delete. It lists a couple of applications, including mgrsrv which invariably is not responding. I have already replaced the hard drive. It booted perfect the first few times and then the same problem started in again.

I have tried disconnecting the cd drive, and moving the memory to the other slot, and while it may start up once, startup is still completely unreliable.

The computer never has trouble once it is up and RUNNING. I did manage to get it to lock up last night trying to do several things at once, but for the most part, once it is going it is every bit as STRONG as my machine.

Any thoughts?

Solve : RPS.exe problem?

Answer»

Five days ago I wiped my C drive clean, re-installed XP and reloaded all my software.

Since then, RPS.exe has been running continually (for 4 days!), draining my systems RESOURCES and making everything very tedious.

Occasionally it stops, maybe whilst composing this post, but as soon as I hit a KEY to do SOMETHING else, it starts up again.

Any ideas GREATLY appreciated.
http://www.pcreview.co.uk/startup/RPS.exe.php

RPS.exe seems to be part of ntl netguard, antivirus and firewall. I'd suggest uninstalling this software and using something like AVG for antivirus, and windows firewall.

Solve : Windows Start up changed.. Why??

Answer»

Quote

I asked the others in the house (who are computer phobe's and know nothing about computers) and got the standard answer... not me. So its a mystery.

This is the standard answer....this is also the most likely reason that things got changed...

Personally i'd set up a limited User account for the others in the House...Programs downloaded, installs, ect.....

Or it could be your local ghost.I have a HP printer model psc 2115

This comes complete with  C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard
and this holds 186 MBytes in 2536 Files and 140 Folders.

I do not know what was INSTALLED with / for your printer,
but I would not be surprised if it included a change of start-up to RUN a service or something that might either be essential for its smooth running, or could assist a quicker response when you TRY to print or scan an image or whatever else it might be able to do.

A computer is "normally" configured to require a password on start-up.
If the only mistake HP MADE was to impose a "default" start-up instead of your preferred configuration, then COUNT yourself very lucky.  Far worse mistakes are common - otherwise forums like this would not be needed !!!

Solve : Broni can you take a look?? Can not open picture files, help!? Please?

Answer»

I have an HP Laptop
Media Center Edition
Version 2002 with Service Pack 3
1.86 GHz
504MB Ram

I have been having trouble with my computer running slow, and I thought that was from me having so many pictures saved. I started writing them all to CDs and Now some of the picture files will not open. When you open the files, it says No Preview Available and the pics wont open in any program I try. I have not ever had this problem. I already posted in the virus forum, and there is no virus or malware. Can anyone help?

Broni, you helped me a little while back, do you have any idea why this wont work?? I really need to figure this out, now it is two different picture files I can not open and parts of others.... I really need to figure this out, it seems the problem is  spreading. ANY help would be GREATLY appreciated! What format are the pics on your hdd?

Quote

I started writing them all to CDs
Which program did you use to burn the cds and what format are the pics on your cds?

Quote
Now some of the picture files will not open.
Do you mean the pics on cd will not open?  What format are these pics which will not open?  Which programs have you used?

Did you finalise the cds?

All the pics are .jpg

I tried windows picture and FAX viewer, ie, jasc paint shop, sony picture motion browser, adobe photo editor.... none open the pics

I am in the middle of checking the cd's, and so far all open ok.Just not the pics on my pc. There are over 30 of them, what do you mean "finalise"? Quote
I am in the middle of checking the cd's, and so far all open ok. Just not the pics on my pc. There are over 30 of them, what do you mean "finalise"?

From that I assume the pics you 'wrote' to cd are opening ok, it's the pics on the hard drive you have a problem with.  You didn't respond to my query about which burning program you used to 'write' files to the cds.

Finalising means that no further data can be burned to that cd regardless of how little data has already been burned, open-session means that further data can be burned after completion of the current session.

Sorry about that. I just opened My Pictures, selected all, and on the left hand side of the window, clicked Write these files to CD. A CD writing wizard comes up. And no they are not finalised, I thought the computer automatically did that to protect the data from being written over... and all files are saved and written as .jpgHave you tried a reboot ?

Windows 98 often locked me out from files because they had been locked for exclusive use by something, and Windows sometimes failed to notice when that "something" had completed.

The only way to get access was to restart Windows.

Regards
AlanYes, I have been trying to fix this for over a week...I now notice that some of the files I thought were okay, now going into them looking at the pics, some of them are the same. I can view some pics, and others say "No preview available" and they wont open in any program I try...

Anyone have a clue??angelec23

I am unable to reproduce your situation.

I launched My Computer to obtain what I think of as Windows Explorer.
I selected a set of *.jpg files
I cannot find any option to "Write these files to CD".
The top left menu "File" INCLUDES many options, including programs to compress to *.zip etc.
Alternatively, selecting these *.jpg files and using right-click gives a context menu with similar options.
If I downloaded and installed a CD writing program I am confident that I could then have the same "Write these files to CD" option as you.

I am using Windows XP Home edition with SP3.

Do you have Nero, or some other extra program which gives you this option ?
Or have I totally misunderstood /

Regards
Alan
Do you have Nero, or some other extra program which gives you this option ?
--Nope, jsut windows XP
When I click on any picture files, in the blue collumn on the left side of the screen there is a "picture tasks" box that has several things to choose from. One of them being "Copy to CD"

I also have XP With SP3.... that is so strange. Maybe you have a setting different than mine...Yes and No !!!

Yes
My default has a Folders Tree on the left side.

NO
By cancelling Folders I now get a blue column on the left.
I now have not so many options

If I select only 1 file I am also offered a preview of that file, but still no  Write to CD nor anything like that.

I still suspect you may have a CD writing program which I do not have,
and that maybe that program has accidentally (or otherwise) done damage.

Regards
Alan
Thanks Alan. I have no idea, I thought all XP came with the Cd writing wizard. I just know I did not install it myself. I am glad to have the back up CD's but they were just for backup.... I am waiting for an external hard drive to transfer everything to.  I have to figure out this problem because I have alot of things that are not backed up at all...Possible reasons I have no CD writing wizard include :-
Some while ago NERO was installed to take care of my CD and DVD CONTROLS, and that may have disabled any writing wizard that could have existed by default (and perhaps NERO was angry with me when I un-installed it, and it decided not to re-enable any default wizard that should be there !!! )

Most windows programs have a Help > About option that gives the program NAME and version, and often a link to the originator's website.  This might answer my questions.

If the writing Wizard just writes what is selected, and there is no user interaction to obtain Help > About, then by opening the disc drive it will be unable to write, and should then report an error condition and await user interaction which might then give the needed Help > About.

Solve : Can I copy tasklist.exe to any place on my %PATH%?

Answer»

I have just DOWNLOAD tasklist.exe for use on Windows XP Home with SP3.

I wish to use this in a batch command file.

Can I copy this to any location designated by %PATH% ?

I would prefer to avoid C:\WINDOWS\system32 because "here be dragons".
Several times Windows File Protection has suddenly demanded that I give it a Windows Installation disc so it can do a NEEDLESS repair on something in system32, and since this P.C. only came with a "RESTORE" disc it gives endless grief.
Hence I am a little apprehensive of system32 - like a marsh filled with crocodiles,
but I will put tasklist.exe in system32 if this gives any extra benefits.

Regards.
Alan
You can indeed put it anywhere on your PATH. There is nothing special about C:\Windows\System32, apart from the fact that it is (or should be!) listed in the PATH variable. A habit I have had ever since MS-DOS 3 days is to have a folder called C:\UTILS which is on my PATH and which contains executables which I wish to refer to only by name, but which are not part of the native OS installation. I also have a folder on my PATH called C:\BATCH where I put batch files I want to ACCESS in that way. Like you, I don't like putting stuff in system folders such as Windows or any of the folders under it such as system32. I especially dislike programs which, on installation, attempt to dump files in those locations.

[Edit]

Another hate of mine is those programs which, without so much as a by-your-leave, add folders to the PATH. It's bad enough if that's all they do, but if they are badly coded they can nuke your PATH, which might badly confuse some people! Apple's QuickTime is a particularly annoying example. It also insists on adding itself to the startup list of programs, every time it runs and finds it is not already there. It makes me avoid watching MOV files.

Thank you Dias.

You are my hero, you not only gave me the answer I was hoping for,
but we dislike the same sort of things.

I remember Windows For Workgroups version 3.1,
and a Borland set of code creation tools that include MAKE.exe which took human source code and compiled and linked it to create computer executables.

I still remember when the IT department upgraded me with a new Mouse that came with an installation 3.5 (rigid) floppy.

The next time I ran Borland MAKE my world fell apart.
Command sequence :-
"MAKE"
ugghhh - what happened - I will try that again
"MAKE"
ugghhh - what happened - I will try that again
"MAKE"
ugghhh - what happened - etc.
I then found that MOUSE installation had added a new folder C:\MOUSE for its new drivers  etc.
AND that this folder held a new file MAKE.BAT,
AND that my PATH now started with C:\MOUSE, so command MAKE no longer reached Borland MAKE.EXE
The icing on the cake was that C:\MOUSE\MAKE.BAT had the magic command
Code: [Select]SET PATH=C:\MOUSE\;%PATH%so by the time I looked at what had been done to my system, PATH had become
Code: [Select]C:\MOUSE\;C:\MOUSE\;C:\MOUSE\;C:\MOUSE\;C:\MOUSE\;C:\MOUSE\;C:\;C:\BAT\;C:\ etc and back to normal.

I feel we ought to bring back capital punishment for such offences against humanity !!!

And don't get me started on Apple,
not only does it install useless and unwanted services like Bonjour,
once it is running you are stuck with it.
I needed at least 3 attempts to kill its entire process tree before I could regain sufficient control for an orderly shut down.
And even without iTunes grotware, when my daughter's IPOD shuffle is plugged into the P.C. it trashes the USB system just enough to instantly kill my External Hard drive,
but it still manages to suck out all the power it wants to recharge its battery.  Clues from the Internet suggest that Apple short together the USB data lines to suck out more power, and I guess what they do on the port they are plugged into causes extreme aggravation to other ports.

My view of Apple is that MAC lost the marketing war against Windows,
so now it is guerrilla warfare.
with IPOD and iTunes as the stealth weapons of choice,
and our youngsters are being seduced away from MP3 players to IPODS,
not so much for relieving them of pocket money,
but so that IPODS become deployed across the world, ready to trash their PARENT's computers.
Should we now use firewalls to screen out "virus detonation synchronisation" signals that certain popular websites might issue to certain popular "peripherals" !!!

Regards
Alan

Powered hubs are quite cheap these days, and are handy for keeping troublesome USB gear at arm's length.Yes Dias, you are right.

The only problem is, my daughter now has a job and a wage,

She can buy her own computer then.

If only - but it is not an option in my situation !!!

Unfortunately I only have a 4 year old LAPTOP with Windows XP because she first bought it for herself, and then got tired of it and gave it to me as a free and unconditional gift.
Otherwise I would still be using an 8 year old Desktop with Windows 98 and dial-up Internet (it was the Broadband Internet which swung the deal for me to abandon proper DOS)

Solve : save faves??

Answer»

the FAVORITES folder has loads of individual folders each containing various internet site adresses that I USE, health service stuff, football websites, various blogs etc, when I click into the. folder 'blogs' inside it has the adresses of all the blogs I read etc. when I can them click on them a internet page OPENS for that site,do you want me to list all of these faves?

url doesnt really mean anything to me,but nothing odvious when I look.I don't think, you saved those favs through export, then.
What you can try is to copy that whole folder, and paste it to C:\Documents and Settings\your_nameI've sent it to my documents:
C:\Documents and Settings\user\My Documents\Favorites
whats best to do next?
No, you have to paste that folder into C:\Documents and Settings\user, not C:\Documents and Settings\user\My Documents, if "user" is your main account.
When done, restart IE, and see if your favs are there.your'e my bloody hero!!

sorted, did that and my faves appear on my IE tool bar,I was thinking I'd have to resort to retyping them all in and resaving them manually.........nightmare

thanks for your PERSISTANCE and patience with me.
much appreciated

Solve : Can't see Pictures.?

Answer»

After my silly computer picked up virus somewhere, It doesn't work quite right anymore. Our computer "I.T." guy is to busy playing Halo to help, so i thought I might try all you gals and guys. I got most of the problem fixed, now all I need to do it be able to view pictures! UNO how you bring up "my computer" then find a folder you want to look at that has pictures? Well before the virus the in the right hand of the screen, it used to show a little picture of the VILE. You could click on it and it would pull up the picture program and picture. Well now i dont get a preview (picture) in the right hand window. Just the stupid program icon. How do I turn that back on so i can see my pics without having to click on every single one. Thanks you so much for any help. It would mean so much to me if someone would be so kind. I'll even bake you an apple pie and mail it to ya! ;-)   Right click on a GRAPHIC file, click "Open with", and select program, you want to view your pictures with.I knew I wasn't making myself clear. Thanks for trying but I can figure out to open an image file. But I dont want to... just YET. I wanna see the picture before I open it. It use to show a small picture and what the file name was underneith it.  Click "my pictures." In the right hand window you see a bunch of your photos with the file name WITHOUT having to open it up. Do you now what i mean?  Not sure how else to explain it. It sounds like you want ‘Thumbnail’ view where Explorer shows a little picture of each image file. Click the ‘View’ menu and see if ‘Thumbnail’ view is selected.Jennifer

If you follow Broni's advice, you will find that in addition to "select a program" you should also find (lower down) a box that can be checked to "Always open with ...".

I believe checking that box will PROVIDE "File Attribute" information, without which you are unlikely to ever have a preview.

Solve : First BSOD?

^^^^^^^... These change after every restart. (in case you were wondering)

See Here...

Any new hardware added recently ? ?No new hardware, just connected her laptop to my network a few days ago, and she DL'd that game off the internet. This problem happened right after the game was downloaded.

How do I know which SERVICE pack is on there? I cant do anything but access the BIOS and Boot menu's.If it's a removable CDROM drive power down and remove it...
If not try it with only AC power and the battery removed...
If neither above works you need to CHECK the cabling to the laptop's hard drive.

(Sounds like she DROPPED it )OK. Thanks Patio. I'll give those a try tomorrow after work.Legit game?

Solve : recycled/ctfmon.exe?

Answer»

My fathers computer was recently scanned by a "pro" and claimed to be completely virus-free. Now, to the problem with the very same box: I put a SD-memory card into the computers integrated memory card reader and nothing happens. Besides the green light on the reader. I try to right-click the drive for auto-run and it says: "recycled/ctfmon.exe is missing. Make sure you have the proper path." Then I google for the "recycled/ctfmon.exe" to find out whats going on, for I didn't know what was ctfmon.exe and why is it related to a folder called "recycled". So this is what I found out: Ctfmon.exe itself is "alright" but when the file is located in 'recycled', its a symptom for a trojan virus. So, why is the autorun looking for this apparently corrupted file which now seems now non-existant? Did the "computer pro" delete our only ctfmon.exe while dealing with viruses, thus making autorun malfunction?

Thanks for your attention and help. What EXACTLY is this 'Computer Pro'?Is there anything on the memory card?Have a look here...

I guess my question was, What did he do? (what programs did he install, ect...)

I don't know exactly, but I guess he just ran a antivir scan and something else. I know he has been doing this kind of stuff and I'm surprised that his doings scarred the system.

Anyways, I ran the RegistySomething 2009, which I found from the earlier link on this thread, on my computer as I was kind of recommended to. It found around 150 registy problems, but the trial version was willing to solve only 15 of these errors. After that the program suggested a reboot and I accepted.
The whole thing was a bad mistake at first. System froze at start-up every time after that and I had to use HP System Restore, which cured the whole issue in the end. End of story, so far.
Thanks. RegistryCleaner 2009? Did you pay for it?Is RegistrySomething the real name of the program ? ?

If so i doubt anyone here recommended it.

Registry scanners can cause more harm than good...By all costs, avoid ANY registry cleaners.

Solve : Today and previous date problem?

Answer»

Currently i USING microsoft Excel 2000, i put formula =IF(A1<>"",today(),"") in cell A2. When i key in all my entry data in cell A1, cell A2 will auto prompt up today date. But when i save the file and open it in next day all the date  in cell A2 became new date not yesterday date or previous date. How to kept  the previous date without when open the file on the day.Anyone can give advices??? Hi

Every version of Excel lacks compatibility with both later and earlier releases.
What works for one version may need adapting for the next version.

This solution works on OPENOFFICE spreadsheets, and with luck you can do SOMETHING SIMILAR with Excel 2000.

1) After creating your spreadsheet, select the cell(s) or columns which have "dynamic" dates and click COPY.
2) Choose a suitable destination and use Menu controls
Edit > Paste Special
Uncheck options "Paste All" and "Formulas"
Check options "Text" and Numbers
Experiment with other options if the first attempt is not quite right.
3) Paste to your chosen destination

That should give exactly the same appearance as the original data, but it is now static and will not get recalculated when the date or any other parameter changes.

If you wish you can select and copy a complete sheet and then select a different sheet as destination for a paste special.

You MAY be able to do a paste special direct on top of the source - but Windows get confused at the best of times and this could easily push it over the edge !!!

Solve : Changing setting for startup logon?

Answer»

I am using a friend's borrowed computer(mine is down due to a malfunctioning Windows start up, may post about this as well), so added a Guest account, but when it starts up it automatically logs on to the ADMINISTRATOR account and I have to log off and back into the Guest account. On my computer it would load up into the 'welcome users' screen and then clicked on to an account. I have checked Help in Windows and looked for other questions here, but the closest I have gotten is info on how to turn off/on the Welcome screen.

Thank you for any consideration and reply on this.

Windows XP  (just noticed the 'face' in that )
Compaq Presario
AMD Athlon2600+
256 Ram
40(32.2)GB had drive (down to 127 MB, almost MAXED)There is a setting to log in automatically which must be set on your friends computer.

CLICK Start, Run and TYPE CONTROL USERPASSWORDS2, and click OK. Check the "Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer option", and click Ok.

Thanks for the reply, but I was in chat shortly after I posted this and...shoot, forgot their name...I shortened the name to LC (Loud...something?)...anyway, we troubleshot and figured I could start a new admin user account and it would load up in the welcome users screen and it did! We got into troubleshooting another problem, LC was very kind and helpful, and I forgot to come back here and let y'all know...sorry!

Love this site and clean and easy chat feature! Thank you all!

Solve : Comuter beeps on return and "+" appears on text...?

Answer»

In the text inside of notepad, TXT file, and my word possessor,  a "+" appears when I hit RETURN.

I've notice that when this happens, a chirp sounds when press return on my desktop. (when no icons are chosen) When I start fresh from a hard boot, and when I hear not this chirp, there are no "+" in my text. But when the chirping starts, so does the "+".  I logically ascertained that the two events are connected.

Yes it is. But it's not so much the computer than MS Window's shoddy Operation system.

I tell you this: I can't take much more of Microsoft; I won't take much more of it! That why I'm making a switch to a Linux OS. But for now I'm stuck with Microcrap Windows.

Back to the subject at hand. I have to solve this problem because it's disrupting my life. Someone HELP me - I'm desperate.

I mentioned turkeys because you miss SPELLED "fouls up" as "fowls up". I guess my attempt at humor was wasted.

Anyhow, have you tried a different keyboard?

If that makes no difference, it could be a faulty motherboard.

I RECENTLY had my LAPTOP sweeped clean and now my cursor skips around when I am typing so that I start to type in words I already wrote. How do I fix this? I already tried by slowing down my mouse.Try re-installing your Touchpad drivers.Or make sure you're not TOUCHING the touch-pad when you are typing.

I've seen this is MANY cases. Its not my touching the mouse pad that's the problem, because this never happened before until my computer was "fixed".

How do I re-install the touch pad?

Solve : can't see some images, sign on screen etc.?

I am USING a Dell Inspirion 710 notebook with Windows XP. Yesterday I had the bright idea to delete/uninstall some of the programs that are either old or I never use. One of them was the free AOL McAffee Virus program. Since that time, I have been having the following problems: 1. I can go to the free AOL sign on screen but can not see the sign in lines. 2. I can open for example oldnavy.com but once I click on a specific item it won't pull up. I am also having problems enlarging items on some of the websites. I am of course at a TOTAL loss since I have no idea what I could have uninstalled that was important for these things to work. If anyone has an idea I would greatly appreciate an answer. Solve : Clean up?

Answer»

Gidday out there.. I would like to sell my laptop and i dont know how to empty it. can i save everything to a external drive? If so    will the PROGRAMS STORED on ext hard drive be able to be sent to a new laptop ??When you say 'empty it', do you mean completely erase everything before you sell it?

Also, are you looking for a way to, for example, copy everything on the current computer and put it in another one?G'day to you BushyMic.

Probably the easiest way to CLEAN out your hard drive is to reformat it.  You can do this by booting from a boot-floppy or boot-cd, depending on what resources your computer has, and typing "format c:" at the prompt.

You can certainly save all of the contents of your hard drive to an external hard drive, and there are various ways of doing this.  You will need to tell us more about what computer resources you have available so you can be BEST advised.

It is unlikely that all of your software could be restored to the new computer just by copying from the backup.  A lot of modern softwares, especially the more sophisticated programs like Ms Office, must be run from a proper setup disc.  If you have the ORIGINAL discs for all of your software, copy them to the C: drive (space permitting) before making the backup, then you can restore them afterwards.

So Sameen, backing up files is basically another term for making copies of the original.

You can do this by either copying your personal files to a Second Hard Drive, Flash Drive, or burn them to a CD/DVD.Use Fab's Autobackup: http://fabs.dyndns.org/index2.php?lang=en&section=freewaresIn the Accessories folder of the Program Directory is a program call MS Backup. Solve : How do I remove Service Pack 3 update.?

Answer»

I got the Service Pack 3 update recently and tried installing it, several times, but with no success. I would get an error message and it would uninstall itself.I went to the MS help site for answers and tried EVERYTHING they suggested, like disabling my Anti-Virus and such, but still no luck. A friend says, that with my setup, I shouldn't really need it.
So I decided I won't try to install SP3 again. Please don't ask me to. I've been around long enough to know, that when the Computer God has preordained something, you do not tempt fate.
I changed the Auto Update to "notify", however, the SP3 update is still in my tray and keeps prompting me to install it. It's driving me nuts! Is there any way to remove it from the computer?
To 'hide' an update, VISIT Windows Update (or Microsoft Update) manually, and click on the "Custom" button. When SP3 appears in the list of available updates, remove the checkmark from the box in front of it, and PLACE a checkmark in the box "Do not show this update again".Went to the site, pressed "Custom", but there was no list, only one update for a "Validation Tool", no boxes to check. In "Update History" they show up as "Failed". Could it be, that only the updates that aren't downloaded yet, will show up on the "Custom" page? The SP3 update was downloaded and is SITTING on the system tray. It's not in the Add/Remove Program list, so it didn't sneak it's way onto my computer when I wasn't looking.Check here: http://xphelpandsupport.mvps.org/how_do_i_remove_the_security_ale.htmThanks Broni, I gave it a try. If you don't hear from me again about this, you'll know it worked. Thanks regardless! No, no. You must post back I guess you're right. No communication, no information. The update notice went missing from the system tray for a while, but popped up again. This time however, the notice was for 4 security updates, no sign of the SP3 update. Good news I hope. Unfortunately, half of the security updates failed to install,  but since half of everything I bought from B. Gates didn't work properly, I guess I'm on par.jwfilion, Confusion exists in my mind as to what is the current status of your computer vis-a-vis SP3.If you could run a computer scan with "Everest" (a free program that will tell you everything you ever wanted to know--and more-- about your computer). SEE if there is any reference to the SP3 being on your computer.
Can be downloaded from this site:  http://www.majorgeeks.com/EVEREST_Free_Edition_d4181.html . truenorthAs for updates, try this...
Download, and run Windows Update Repair Tool: http://software.hitoma.com/WURT/
To download the tool, click on I Agree link.truenorth, "Everest" appears to be similar to the SiSoftware Sandra program that I already have on my machine. It does put out a lot of info, maybe more than a neophyte needs, but I did find some interesting things.

Broni, thanks for the link to the repair tool. I try it out, but I think I'll stay away from SP3.jwfilion,If you interpreted my suggestion as i any way encouraging you to download and install "SP3" that was not at all my intention. I personally do NOT have it installed nor am i in any rush to do so. I do continue to install most other microsoft updates but always decline that one.No my confusion is/was that maybe in spite of what you think you may actually have it installed. If you are SURE you don't then that is fine if that is your desire.truenorth Quote

I think I'll stay away from SP3
I have no problem with this, SP3 is really not a crucial update, but you seem to be having problems with other updates, as well.Broni, truenorth, I understood both of your posts and appreciate the intent. Thanks.

Solve : Trouble resolving Windows Update Error 0x80248011?

Answer»

When I go to Windows Updates and click for the express scan for updates I get an error message.  The number of the error message is 0x80248011.  I have tried a couple of the solutions that Microsoft recommends on its Update site, but have not been successful in completing them.  For one it asks me to rename a file, but it won't let me change the name.

I have used the Protection Scan/Disc Cleanup Scan on the Microsoft site and they report there are no virus problems, and I have used my Norton scan with the same results.

I have also been having a problem with shutting down my computer and have to do it by turning the power off, so I have not been receiving automatic updates.

How can I solve this problem? Thanks for remembering that I am not very computer literate, so please use the most simplistic explanation as to how to remedy this situation.  Could the problem I have getting updates be connected to the shutdown problem?

I appreciate any help you can give me on these problems.  Thank you.  Download Windows Update Fix to your desktop.
Double click on downloaded file, and allow registry merge.

May be it helps..  Broat--thanks for the suggestion.  I downloaded the Windows fix to my desktop, but when I clicked run a box popped up with a RED circle/white X which says "This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action.  Create an association in the folder options control panel."

What does this mean and how do I do this?

Sykes--thanks for your suggestions, too.  I will try the Data Rebuild suggestion if the above doesn't work.  However, I have already experienced problems with the other resolution suggestions.   I have tried resolution #1, and it didn't work; with resolution #2, I can get as far as the rename the folder, but for some reason, it will not let me rename it.  Hopefully, between Broat's suggestion and yours I can solve this problems.

Anybody: Thanks for any help you can give me with solving this problem.

One other thing I've noticed is on every start up I get a Iomega box asking me to select a data recovery file or something like that.  I have just been clicking cancel, but it keeps coming back with every start up.  Any ideas as to what this is, and could it be causing the problem I'm having with shutting down my computer/and or this Windows Update error message?  What should I do about it?

Thanks again for your help.Who is Broat?

Anyway, right click on downloaded file, and click "Merge".
Allow registry merge.
Restart computer.http://support.microsoft.com/kb/883821Broni (sorry about the Broat, I don't know where that came from!)--When I right click on the Windows Update fix icon on my desktop and then click merge, I get a security box asking if I want to run this and when I click run the red circle/white X box pops up with the  "This file doesn not have a program association . . . ." message.  What should I do about this?

Thanks for your help, and, again, apologies for messing up your name.It looks like your system files are messed up.

Go Start>Run ("Start Search" in Vista), type in:
sfc /scannow
Click OK (hold CTRL, and SHIFT, hit Enter in Vista).
Have Windows CD/DVD handy.
If System File Checker (sfc) will find any errors, it may ask you for the CD/DVD (rarely in Vista case).
If sfc won't find any errors in Windows XP, it'll simply quit, without any message.
Broni-- I followed your suggestion and when I hit OK a black box popped up for just a second and then disappeared.  Nothing happened after that.  Is that how it should happen?  What do I do now?

Thanks for your help.Download HijackThis:

by clicking on Download HijackThis Installer
Install, and run it.
Post HijackTHis log.

Solve : Outlook Express Spell Checker locked to French?

Answer»

I cannot use the spell CHECK of Out Look express as it suggests French WORDS for my English words.

I went Tools/Options/Spelling/Language,  a pull down menu, that only has French ie no other choices.

I've just got this new COMPUTER with XP Pro on it..

I read something about a language PACK for Internet Explorer.

Any ideas appreciatedOutlook Express doesn't have its own spell checker.

It uses a spell checking module from one of your Office Suites.

Do you have MICROSOFT Office installed on your computer?  If so, check the language settings in it to see if its configured for English.  If not, change it and try using the spell checker again.

Keep us posted...Are you sure this is YOUR computer.

Solve : Data Execution Prevention Message Appears After Closing IE?

Answer»

I ran ie withseveral tabs open at the same time. Whenever I close a tab where the page was still loading or close All Tabs at once, several seconds afterwards the following message APPEARS:

DATA EXECUTION PREVENTION- MICROSOFT INTERNET EXPLOR...

"To Help Protect Your COMPUTER Windows Has CLOSED This Program

Name: Internet Explorer

Publisher:....

There is a button "Close Message"

After closing the message, another error message comes up:
Internet Explorer has encountered a PROBLEM and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience, etc.

I TRIED to checking and unchecking the Internet explorer  in Data Execution Prevention Control Panel But these messages still appear. What can be done?

Solve : Recovery Console not detecting HDD?

Answer»

You have to start with diskpart.  When you're INSIDE diskpart, that'll open up the list disk and list volume commands.  If you exit out of diskpart, then list disk and list volume won't work until you get back in it.Sorry, I forgot to say what diskpart said:

Microsoft Diskpart version 5.1.2565

Copywrite (C) 1999-2003 Microsoft Corperation
On COMPUTER: MININT-JVC

The disk Management services could not complete the operation.

So, diskpart didn't work at all...

EDIT

I got into diskpart now. I had to TYPE these two lines.

net start dmserver

net start dmadmin

DISKPART> list disk

There are no FIXED disks to show.

DISKPART> list volume

Volume 0       X    BartPE                  CDFS            DVDROM            156 MB
Volume 1       D                                                     DVDROM                  0 B
Volume 2       C    My_Device            FAT32          Removable        7640 MBBartPE MAY not have drivers for your hard drive controller.

Try WinPE and see what its diskpart output is.

Is Volume 2 drive C an 8 GB flash drive?Okay, I'll try that.

Solve : Restore, diskscan, defrag.?

Answer»

Why will my computer not let me restore, run diskscan or defrag.  It has been doing some things I've never seen.  While I was posting this QUESTION it froze up and SHUT down.  Said something about dumping physical memory.  New one to me.  I don' t know what to do next.On the screen that SAYS "Dumping Physical Memory" either write everything down on it or take a picture with a digital CAMERA and post the contents here (yes, even the gibberish letters and numbers)...

Also, are there any other messages that you're getting?  Post those here as well.

Other than that, my only guesses are either
a) Hard drive's about to croak
b) Virus/malware infection.

I'll let a malware specialist handle case b), but as far as a) goes, you'll need to either run some hard drive diagnostics by the manufacturer of your hard drive or boot into the Recovery Console or WinPE and run CHKDSK against the drive.

Before I or anyone else posts any instructions, we do need error messages and all that good stuff from you, though.Open Windows Explorer.
Navigate to: C:\Windows\Minidump folder.
If you see any .dmp files, zip all of them, and attach zipped file to your next reply.
Vista users. You MAY need to copy .dmp files, paste them into some other folder, or desktop, and zip them there.

Solve : Is there some kind of virus/spyware/etc....?

Answer»

I am wondering if there is some type of virus/spyware/etc.. something that might be able to hide and RUN behind the system idle process in task manager. I understand what the system idle process is, but my problem is that it can be sitting on 99%, nothing else showing any numbers, and my CPU usage will still be 30, 40 50 even 100%. This doesn't add up, right? And I know something has to be RUNNING, because I'll be in the middle of a some application and it starts to slow down, or gets all jerky. So I close whatever I'm in, check the task manager, and sure enough the CPU is showing usage ( and it is continues to do so even if i close and reopen it) but the system idle process bar will show 95% or better, and nothing else will be SHOWN running. This happens more on line than off, but it does happen offline. Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Chris Quote

system idle process bar will show 95% or better
System Idle Process shows the portion of your CPU NOT being used, so it's perfectly normal.I understand that 95% on the system idle process is ok, but why would my CPU usage below still show usage? The system idle process can be at 99%, meaning no resources being used; but the CPU usage will read anywhere from 2% to 100% without anything else showing up running, only system idle process, and that will be 95% and above. Quote
why would my CPU usage below still show usage?
Do you mean 5%?
It's normal too. There are always some services running, even if no program is open.
Maybe, you can TELL us, what kind of problem you're having. No, I mean that the system idle process reads 95% or better, and the cpu usage also reads various PERCENTAGES being used; no programs running (or so it says); system idle process 99%; CPU usage will range anywhere between 10 and 100%; How can it add up to more than 100%? There seems to be something running behind, or hiding behind the system idle process. Download Process Explorer: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653.aspx
Unzip ProcessExplorer.zip, and double click on procexp.exe to run the program.
Click on View > Select Colunms.
In addition to already pre-selected options, make sure, the Command Line is selected, and press OK.
Go File>Save As, and save the report as Procexp.txt.
Attach the file to your next reply.Good Morning,
I followed the requested instructions regarding process explorer and am wondering if anything was found out of the ordinary. Any updates would be most appreciated.

Let it run to completion.

P>S> This is sometimes a symptom of other issues so make sure he runs it...Appreciate the assistance.  Where is the checkbox you mentioned ?

We know. We can see that is what you wrote. Dslgeek is the FOOL who cannot read. Plug the camera in while in the Administrator account, right click the camera icon, and choose properties. Under security tab, add the limited user and give full permission. This may work. Good luck

Solve : how to sort out?

Answer» SUPPOSE if I have a name of different cities in COLUMN A, and in column B also I have a names of  cities.
I want to FIND out how many cities in column B are already there in column a as well & how many are not.
for e.g. mumbai can be in both in a and in b column

welcome Sanjeev

Glad you made it!

Now wait for someone to answer this question, you can also check later Hi

This site has other forums more suitable for this question.

Personally I think I could provide a DOS answer,
I just don't have the energy or time to WASTE with totally unsuitable tools.

To start with, you may need to convert the data to pure upper case (or pure lower case).  It would take far to much effort to have the computer compensate for any spelling mistakes or variations in what gets a capital letter.

I suggest you use a spreadsheet.
I prefer Open Office, but Excel may also be up to it.

Just paste your multi-column table into the spreadsheet,
and so long as choose as column delimiters the Tabs, SPACES, whatever that have been used in the original document, they should appear in separate columns.

Simple spreadsheet tricks :-
1) Copy column A into empty column C
2) Copy column B and append below what has just gone into C
3) Select each column, one at a time, and sort that column
4) Select portions of A and slide down, leaving vertical gaps, so that each town is on the same row as in column C
5) Repeat "4" upon column B
6) Look at columns A and B - you should now see duplicate towns side by side.

Regards
Alan
