Solve : Really really weird...need help!?

Answer»

Hi, I'm running on XP, and just recently my computer STARTED acting funny. My partner went onto the internet (IE9) and it froze and afterwards the mouse started acting funny, or so she thought, and she replaced the batteries and stuff but was still strange. Basically double clicks don't work anymore, so we cannot open folders that way. Obviously they open with the right click, but then when they are opened the back button does not work to go back to My DOCUMENTS like it should do. Also after a while the system can freeze for a bit, so i'm wondering if it's just running so slow it doesn't notice double clicks? (I checked on control PANEL...hardware...mouse about the double click speed and the folder opens).
I was thinking about just trying to restart windows, but it won't interrupt the boot-up sequence when I restart the computer, so I cannot get the Windows CD to try and repair it or anything. I've also cleaned up the disk, and tried restoring the system to when it was working fine, and also checked for viruses etc. Haen't defragged it, but I don't think that will make much difference...
Any ideas as to what I can do?

1. Laptop. What is the Make and Model Number of the laptop, e.g. DELL Inspiron 1705?

2. Operating System. What version of windows are you using (Windows XP Home Edition, Professional, or Media CENTER)?

What Service Pack Level are you at (none, SP1, SP2, SP3)?

3. Safe Mode. From a cold start (power off), restart the computer while tapping the F8 function key once or twice a second until the Windows Advanced Options menu appears. (If laptop, you may have to use F-Key to access the Functions Keys). Using up/down arrow keys, select "Safe Mode" and then hit the "Enter" key.

Does it successfully boot into "Safe Mode"?

4. Double-Click. Can you double-click now (within Safe Mode) to open a folder? Are you doing this from within "Windows Explorer"?

Try a new mouse...preferably one that's not CORDLESS for now...Hmmm... A cordless mouse... I totally missed that!

If you have a "wireless desk set", don't have a switched on cellphone near either mouse, keyboard or the wireless receiver or you may get erratic results.

Solve : memory card not recognised?

Answer»

i do not know to much about comp but i have to ask question...
when i start my PC it says 256MB memory but i installed 1.00 GB...
do i need to do some extra stuff...reprogram or ?
please help...
SORRY for my bad language... The memory (RAM) should be detected automatically.
Chances are it is the not compatible.
Please post what kind of computer or motherboard you have and what kind of RAM you have have installed (DDR, DDR2, PC100, PC3200, ETC.)
If it is the right type and speed it may just need to be reseated.
Make sure the plastic clips are all in the the upright position.
Might also want to try a different RAM slot.
Good luck! does windows XP show you the right amount of memory for what you installed?

go to the start menu --> click run --> in the run box, type winver

then SEE the number next to "Physical Memory Available to Windows"... does that number make sense? Should be close if not same as what you expect your amount of memory to be.

On my computer, I have physically 2.5gb of memory, computer reads it as 2.88gb, no big deal...Quote from: 2x3i5x on August 11, 2009, 11:51:25 PM

On my computer, I have physically 2.5gb of memory, computer reads it as 2.88gb, no big deal...

2GB is 2,684,354,560 bytes...

Yeah I just REPORTED what windows vista said, I didn't actually check the math, Windows says I have 2.75GB of ram in the Windows Experience Ratings section.

And in the "Winver" panel, it says I have 2881356kb of physical memory available to windows. And even CPU-Z says I have a grand total of 2816 MBytes of ram currently.

I have three 512mb ram sticks and one 1gb ram stick in my system at the moment ....which dimm slot is the card installed in. you should try to install it in dimm1 which is read first . the PROBLEM might be dimm2 slot that has gone bad on the motherboard. The largest capacity RAM chip should always go in the slot closest to the CPU...
At least that's what experience has taught me...
Of course there's always the variable of mis-matched RAM chips which i suspect is the true issue here...maybe some brands don't like each other, have seen that happen before too Also note that if you do not have a graphics card that the system is probably using onboard (otherwise referred to as integrated) video which is utilizing a portion of the memory.

Solve : Help! Computer shut itself down. Now cannot access the internet.?

Answer»

One day the desktop just stopped running. It would not turn back on. The lights would come on momentarily then back off.
My son cleaned the dust from inside and now it boots up, and runs windows fine. EVERYTHING seems to work fine except it won't open IE or Firefox. (Firefox sometimes gets the Google page but won't open websites!)
It's Windows XP.
When I try IE, it says "Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close"
When I try Firefox it usually says "CONNECTION interrupted"
In the start menu, I go to:
connect to/show all connections/local AREA connection...
status connected. Device name NVIDIA nForce network Networking controller
WE have a wireless router connected to it and our internet WORKS fine on the other computers.
What can I do?
Thanks,
Jim

I uninstalled Firefox and downloaded and reinstalled it. It now works. After that the update thing for IE8 popped up. It looks like it's running but doesn't seem to be getting anywhere. That should only take a few seconds huh? Is't been about 10 minutes.
Should I uninstall IE and reinstall?Sounds like an add-on is preventing IE from running correctly.

Check this article out http://support.microsoft.com/gp/pc_ie_intro

Try resetting IE -> http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923737Thanks for your reply,
While I was cleaning up the drive, an IE8 update came up. I actually downloaded IE8 and saved it but did not install. It started working after the update finished!
I installed ccleaner & superantispyware and ran them. I got rid of some dead weight and did a defrag.
Now it seems like everything is good.
Thanks again,
Jim

Solve : Microsoft windows XP fails to boot up.?

Answer»

It wasn't made by a company, so here are some specs...

Mboard: Asus
Model: P5GD2-X
Model Number: 1.00?
The bootable CD was equiped with Microsoft Windows XP Serial Pack 2

Does word "rev" under the model means model number?

I hope that's enough.

Thanks for the help

If I'm taking my HDD to my friend's house then what kind of wires do I have to take with me?
Here's the image:

The red one is really wide wire and goes into my Mboard.
The other are going.... everywhere lol...

I'm 100% sure I gotta take the wide red one with me but what about the other kit of wires?

Sorry for being such a novice.
The red one is the Data cable....take it in case he does not have an extra....
The other one is the POWER cable and there should be an extra one coming from his PSU....you just disconnect that one.
You can't take it with you unless you remove your PSU...not neccessary.I took it to my friend's house and things improved a bit. Here's the current situation:

All CDs and DVDs can be booted and I can even run windows setup via Windows XP bootable CD, but when It has copied files to harddrive it won't be able to boot from HDD to CONTINUE with installing.

What is Master Boot Record?

It's ALMOST 100% sure that my HDD is not physically damaged. It also seems like my computer knows what to do but it fails to start installation because it doesn't know where it is. <---- [emailprotected] Cheesy

Any thoughts?I got it fixed and I'm running my computer very well. Thanks for the help. Quote from: Centurion on August 03, 2009, 03:33:33 AM

Patio, where do you live? I want to make out with you because it worked. It booted the CD successfully.

I got it fixed and I'm running my computer very well. Thanks for the help.

What was the underlying problem and how did you fix it?My computer failed to boot from any data carriers because I had unformatted partitions on hard DRIVE. I don't know why but it didn't let me.

Solution:
I took my HDD to my friend's place and performed a full format. After the format, it let me boot CD's but after XP the copingscreen the computer had to restart and the setup didn't continue with installing windows. Then I decided to USE Hiren's boot CD to create a new partition and place it in the end of hard disk so the free 8 megs* will be in the beginning. Then I rebooted and windows copied files successfully and installed Windows successfully.

* 8 Megs = The unpartitioned space what windows needed to do something. I don't know what. Mine was 1 mb before I performed the full format.

Solve : Computer streaming issue??

So this is a wireless system, they GENERALLY don't run at full wired speeds anyway. I would go with the tech on this and agree with getting a boosted antennae.I don't fully trust the tech he said he updated everything 100% but I've had to update a bunch of things he didn't . he said youtube worked great for him but this com didn't EVEN have the updated flash content needed to run youtube videos so how could he have tested it to find it worked fine. thats what I get for going cheap on a tech only $40 to reboot and reformat. If he didn't work for my father in law at freescale I'd never have had it taken to him I could have done the job myself. besides I was thinking he'd install windows vista not xp home edition. but like I stated earlier this com was a gift from my father in law and he wanted it to work before giving it to me so................. Oi, one of those, lets start over from the beginning and see what we get.of all the things it could have been it was my setting for my flash content and video CARD. oy vey that was a weird problem to deal with.So you GOT it now?yep had to turn down acceleration of nvidia card and pow work good. go figure! and my abode settings needed adjusting. but finally can watch my videos. thanks for the help. software work sux I love hardware though. After say 4. SEC the window goes away and nothing I am sitting at the page that says Adobe Flas Player.

And I give it a fue MIN and still nothing.

Otherwise try downloading with a different web browser like firefox or chrome. Good luck!OK I downloaded Adobe Flash PLAER 10 and Java and they both Installed GREATE on my Admin account.

May have corrupt or incompatible video driver. You'll need to reinstall correct driver properly. Need to step out for awhile. I or someone will get back to you with the proper procedures.thank you for trying to help wish i knew a little more about computers so i can help some people on here!!!1. Fix the Windows XP NVIDIA nv4_disp problem. Well, I guess I'm back pedaling a bit... A review of the literature suggests it could be: hardware failure, heat, or corrupt/incompatible software.

Didn't find the reference I was looking for; but you can take a look at Fix the Windows XP NVIDIA nv4_disp problem for his driver installation procedures.

One thing I would do differently is access internet via "Enable VGA Mode" boot for any downloads you need (so your antivirus and other security software is active). Then I would reboot to "Safe Mode" and pick up his installation procedures at "step 3".

Well this is really strange but i just removed the driver completely and the computer works normal except maybe not quite as clear a picture as before but it works without the driver, is this normal. if i reinstall the driver it wont load in normal mode!! any suggestions

1. My guess is you don't have the "best" (or correct) driver for your machine. Assuming the video card (or associated hardware) isn't starting to fail, you should be able to restore the display to its original clarity. The other possibility is your "display settings" aren't set to the native configuration (optimal) of your LCD display (perhaps you picked up Nvidia drivers for desktop rather than notebook/laptop environment).

2. Dell Video Drivers. Recommend you try the drivers provided by Dell for your machine's configuration. If you have Dell Inspiron E1705, this is the top level Drivers & Downloads link. If you follow the links for video cards, you'll find Dell provides multiple versions for your Nvidia GeForce Go 7900 GS option. Suggest you start with either v101.19 A03 dated 12/9/2007 or v84.69 A01 dated 6/6/2006. Please note the information provided on those version links, particularly the "Installation Instructions".

If you can restore the clarity to your display, and it's operational; it would give me confidence that your video hardware is fine. At that point, if you want to push the envelope looking for the latest greatest Nvidia driver - have a ball. But at least you would have a fully functional driver to fall back to.

Dell also provides "download" link to latest Dell "Performance Driver", vendor version 167.51, with the caveat that performance drivers have not been fully tested for compatibility and stability with Dell products.

3. Nvidia Drivers. This might be latest Beta driver from Nvida, v179.48 dated 2/11/2009, that's compatible with your computer; but even they recommend checking with Dell (your OEM) before using. They also provide some general installation hints when installing drivers.

4. Device Manager. Examine your system to determine the current video driver that you are using. Go "Start -> Run -> type "devmgmt.msc" without quotes, then hit Enter". Device Manager window should appear. Double-click "Display adapters" to expand the category. Right click on your Nvidia device, then left-click on "Properties". Select the "Driver" tab. Note the information, especially the Driver Provider, Date, Version, and whether or not it is "signed".

Solve : Windows XP Pro "stalls" just before Ctrl Alt Del login screen - sometimes?

Answer»

Hello,

I have an issue on a Windows XP Professional laptop, where intermittently, when it is started up from being completely shut down, it starts loading Windows, displays the Windows logo, etc. and then displays the blue background. You can move the MOUSE around - but the Ctrl Alt Del login prompt doesn't appear.

No key combinations I've tried work - it's just stuck there. Usually if I hold the power button down for 10 seconds, it will shut down and when I start it back up again it works normally. I would say it's one out of five times it does this.

I have up to date corporate Kaspersky Antivirus, I've run registry cleaners (PC tools Registry Mechanic, CCleaner) I run a lot on my system, but keep it fairly well maintained.

It's a Dell Latitude D820, Core 2 Duo @ 2Ghz, 4GB RAM, etc. - and it's running XP Pro, and is part of a Windows server domain.

It has me stumped. I've done a fair bit of online research - but haven't found any solutions.

Any intelligent help would be appreciated!

Have you tried using the ctrl+alt+del sequence?Just on general principles, I would check the integrity of the file system and defrag it; in that order. If you also choose to check the disk surface for ERRORS, don't ever abort it.

When you say "check the integrity of the file system" do you mean chkdsk command? or what are you referring too? I haven't aborted any checking the disk surface for errors.

I'll try running a defrag and see if that MAKES a difference, although I'm not as optimistic as the Diskeeper ads about proper defragging solving all the world's problems.

Thanks.

Yes, either the "chkdsk" command or its GUI interface (right-click disk -> Properties -> Tools TAB -> Error-checking subsection). Have you checked the disk surface recently? See Windows XP chkdsk.

I would run the "chkdsk" before the "defrag" to ensure the integrity of the file system and disk surface before moving stuff around. If you do a surface scan as part of the chkdsk, it may take a LONG time; but don't "abort" it.Quote from: gveit on August 07, 2009, 04:16:03 PM

Either way Access is a special beast when it comes to file types since it isn't an "access" data base it opens but a Jet Database, whose format is determined entirely by the version of the installed JET database engine installed; Each version has a different Database engine version included with it.

However after INSTALLING Access 2007, if the DAO LIBRARIES are binary compatible with the previous versions (and I see no reason why not) then it's likely that Access 2003 will also create Databases using the newer engine, making them unreadable to a "pure" 2003 install.

This is where the re-registration comes in, assuming MS was unable to setup a side-by-side configuration for the two Access versions, the next best thing is to do what the OP is experiencing, which is the re-registration of the appropriate components.

I checked FAQ's first and researched the other sites. I received one suggestions that I can't use Standby because I have a desktop. That doesn't make sense as itwas working earlier. Any suggestions? Can you roll back the drivers that DT updated?

Alan <>< I probably could figure that out, but this problem existed before I updated the drivers. I just MENTIONED it as that was the only update done on the computer recently. If this is desktop, don't use any power saving features. So, don't try to save power? I think I'd always test a system to see whether it's power saving features worked and, if they do, I'd use them.

Do you have a Restore point prior to when this started happening?Quote
don't try to save power?
Not, if it causes problem to my computer.I don't have a restore point as I'm not sure the exact day it started happening. I'll ask another question, does it harm the computer if it's left on all day?No, but I wouldn't leave it on overnight. BTW, do you have a UPS? They're a very good thing to have to protect your computer against power fluctuations? No, I don't have a UPS, will consider getting one though. I'll just settle to leave the computer on all day. I always shut it down at night anyway. I just couldn't figure out why it won't respond to the power down setting. Thank you for your help.

Solve : x-ing out open windows?

Answer»

Besides runnng extremely slow, my open windows won't close when I try to x them. They reactivate themselves. When I control, alt, delete, ALL the windows I have open close instead of just one.Start by eliminating some running programs, there may be some conflict......Click Start>RUN>TYPE MSCONFG click OK

click on the "start up" tab click on "disable all", click "apply", click OK, then restart the computer.........open some programs and then try to close them to see if the problem remains

Disabling all those programs, will help the overall speed of your system, whether or not the problem with the windows goes away..Thank you for this information - however, when I pull up 'run' and put in MSCONFG it SAYS it can't be found. So now what?typo in his post- it should be MSCONFIG.

To get a better idea of what the system is doing; go to SysInternals WEBSITE, download, unzip, and run Process Explorer. This is the "task manager" program Microsoft should have provided, and since they now own "SysInternals"; I guess they do.also as an alternative to MSCONFIG you can use the sysinternals "Autoruns" utility. Normally my computer opens things without giving this window.
The only thing I have done differently is delete a file LOCATED in Local Disk, WINDOWS, System32. The file was called dddesot.exe and I was told to delete this by another website in order to remove WindowsAntivirusPro.

I rebooted after I did this and now I have this problem. Can anyone HELP?try these steps:

Solve : Computer is....?

Answer»

Ok my computer has been screwing up. Everytime i try to go to a diffrent website or type something i have to constatly click my lower tool bar minimize application and then maximize before i can do anything. Even when i copy and paste it goes way to slow, and its me off if you can answer this question it will be great. Thank guys.

post edited for contentSo... Is this only a problem when working within your browser? What browser and version number are you using?

For debugging purposes, have you TRIED invoking the browser in safe mode (see Safe Mode - Mozilla Knowledge Base). For example:
o Start -> RUN -> type "firefox -safe-mode" without quotes and hit Enter key.

What i am saying is if i open a WEBPAGE and im done viewing it; I cant click on nothing i have to minimize it then maximize the firefox browser in order to type or go to the next web page, and when i click copy or paste it goes do *censored* slow and its not my mouse, mouse is working fine. Okay. As a test, close Firefox and invoke it (in Firefox safe mode). Same problem?

See if you have similiar problem while using Internet Explorer. With firefox yes, and with IE No, but i cant scroll with the mouse on IE I have to use the side scroll bar.So, this is only a problem when working within the "Firefox" browser? The rest of Windows and your other applications seem to work normally?

Did you try invoking Firefox from the "Start -> Run" box using "firefox -safe-mode" syntax? And the weirdness/slowness was still there?Ive tried that and the slowness is working with the whole computer IE is working fine.Okay. The ENTIRE computer is slow, even Internet Explorer; but Internet Explorer seems to be functioning correctly. Is that right?

I'm assuming the computer isn't normally this slow, and a "reboot" did not resolve the slowness.

Go to SysInternals website to download, unzip, and run the program "Process Explorer". It will display:
o What PROCESSES are running
o What percentage of the CPU time each is using
o How much physical memory is "Available" at any given time
o Whether your "swap" file is too small

Once, it is running; from the top menu bar left-click on the "View" pull down menu and select the "System Information" item. A "System Information" window will open.

In the bottom half, middle column, look for a Physical Memory section.
We're interested in what it says for:
o Total
o Available

For swap file, look in the bottom left hand column for something that says "Commit Charge". There should be something like "Current/Limit" that shows the percentage of the virtual memory that is being used.

On the original "Process Explorer" window, the "Idle" process shows what CPU percentage on average?
Total 981k
Available 336k

Current/Limit 28%

And anywhere from 90-98%well?

Solve : outlook express 6?

Answer»

I have two computers. We willl call ONE of them "good" and the other one "bad." On the "bad" one, I get my e-mails through Outlook Express 6. On the "good" one, I get my e-mails through Microsoft Outlook 7. Can I download Outlook Express 6 onto my "good" computer so tat I can import all my e-mails into one account? Thanks, christole
QUESTION 2.....I have been trying to figure all of this out by deleting programs, etc. trying to free up disk space in the meantime because -0- disk space has been a major PROBLEM for me. Now, I have gone from -0- disk space to 168 MG because...(I deleted some pics!) After I did this and after I removed all of the links in my "FAVORITES" tab, I was once again able to view my e-mail and I noticed that ALL of my e-mail is gone from days past (I had about 3,000 just sitting in my inbox)!!!! I do not know where they went because I did not delete those e-mails myself...does anyone know where I can find my old e-mails? Have they been compressed into a separate file? Did they delete themselves? Did a virus delete them? What is going on?
Thanks, Christole
Not sure how to answer here because i'm far from an Outlook expert but if your free space is down to 168 MG you need a bigger HDD or need to do some serious housekeeping...
I'm suprised the system even boots properly. How do I go about increasing my hard drive?Thank you for the information, but I do not know how to find my messages after they have been exported into Microsoft Outlook or Microsoft Exchange. Please help. Thanks, Christole P.S. I think that they many have exported themselves. This link will give an overview of importing/exporting files
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/287070

Chances are the data has been moved to the trash or archived.
You MAY want to search the HDD for *.pst files

To get more HDD space you need to remove unnecessary information, add an additional HDD, or replace the one you are currently using.

Stay away from so called Registry Cleaners. They create more problems than they solve. The BEST bet is to get rid of what is causing these problems, like Patio says.

Solve : Windows XP Laptop won't boot up past the Windows Loading Screen?

Answer»

I have NO idea what happened. One of my family members noticed it. And they all swear nothing out of the ordinary happened. Just all of a sudden the laptop RESTARTED by itself. And when it was going through the process, it stopped at the loading screen, the flicker of a BSoD came up, and it restarted again. THis process kept continuing until I had to pull the battery out to finally turn it off.

What happens is that after the BSoD flashes up to the screen, it restarts with the options of starting in Safe Mode, The previous settings that worked, or normally. Of course, none of them worked. Not even the F8 options got to the Desktop. So basically, I'm stuck in start-up. As I load Safe Mode, the .SYS files are loading...EXCEPT for when it says "Press ESC to cancel loading SPTD.sys". I researched this file to find that it is a file used for DAEMON tools, which I know is installed.

I believe all that's left is to borrow (or burn =/) a Windows XP Disc

And I will type what the BSoD said:
Code: [Select]A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME

If this is the FIRST time you've SEEN this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed. If this is a new installation, ask your hardware or software manufacturer for any Windows updates you might need.

if problems continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware or software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use Safe Mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to selected advanced startup options, and then select Safe Mode.

Solve : hard disk memory disappearing?

Answer»

my C disk shows to contain data of around 60gb in the Windows folder, which is eating up my HDD memory.
i tried to trace the FILE(s) with absolutely no success.

what can i do?

i am desperate! have you made sure you have the folder settings set up so that all files (including previously hidden files) are displayed so you can see them?thx for replying!

i did that and still nothing big shows! With updates and restore points included this is not unusual....
Look for other spots to save/backup your data and free up some space...
What's the capacity of the HDD ? ?
thx

80gb, and now only 1500mb is available.
it is very peculiar because i cannot locate the (seemingly) large file that CREATES all this problem.

i have gone into all directories in the windows folder,, and although the volume in the windows folder is shown to be 58gb, when i go into the individual subfolders i cannot locate anything large.

the number of total files is 22180 so it cannot be that a very large number of small files exist making this huge 60gb rogue volume.

i am at a loss Stop looking at Windows folders as the culprit...
CHECK movies; pics; and installed/uninstalled apps to free up some space....
I'm suprised that machine even boots properly.have just checked for movies/pix
no movies to speak of, several pix, sevaral music pieces (audio), total not more than 1.5gb

how could i check for programs/appls as you suggest?

again thx! i think i have found something!

in windows/installer folder there are 54gb of data

a very large number of files with the same length 117.166 kb, and 95.104 kb exist, all with the same date (either 27/7/07 or 8/8/05)

the files are all .msp

how would i know which i could delete, if any, without damaging my computer?

again thx so much!use the windows disk cleaner (that comes with windows already )to clean it out. Or try ccleaner to clean out your computer. I have to agree with 2x3i5x, *.msp files of that size are probably patch installers.

I would ALSO take a look at the System Restore settings. MS has an article that may apply to you for that..msp files can be one of the two things....

1. Windows Installer Patch file type, which are the most common

2. Microsoft paint file type ... Monochromatic (black and white) image file created by Microsoft Paint, one of the first painting programs released by Microsoft; also used for storing OLDER clip art images.

Seeing as it is in the windows / installer folder, it would most likely be under the windows installer patch file type

So I told him to get rid of it. and boy do I have space now. He took my tower and cleaned it up. blew the dust out. when he hooked it back up. it rebooted again and he said the problem had to be here. well it was the mouse. logitech mouse and it was old. How to Create a Bootable Windows XP Setup Disk on a Preinstalled / Preloaded Windows SYSTEM

will it work if the i386 file is in the Windows folder?404 on the url. here's the working one:

http://www.howtohaven.com/system/createwindowssetupdisk.shtmlThanks BC for fixing the URL. Here is a partial quote from the article:

Copy the entire C:\I386 to C:\XPSETUP. When you have finished, you will have C:\XPSETUP\I386. Notice that I said "copy", not "move". Do NOT drag and drop the I386 folder into the XPSETUP directory.

This means you have to copy the i386 fouler to a a NEW folder that will be usef to make the bootlace CD.

Solve : Windows has encountered a serious problem...?

I have 10 machines and have been given a CD which to IMAGE the hard drive (think this is what it's called) - it uses Norton Ghost to install XP and all the programs needed. It worked for 6 of the machines but for 4 I am encountering the error of:

Windows has encountered a serious problem and needs to close. I went into event viewer and it said: System Error, CATEGORY 102, Event ID 1003. What does this probably MEAN? Solve : OK! I'm at my wits end :)?

Answer»

Short story shortened - my compy crashes. I go to format & reinstall windows XP.
- when windows XP setup gets to the "setup is starting windows..." right before the prompt where you press enter to install, r to enter recovery console, or some random button to do some random function (i really don't remember) my computer will freeze, preventing me from going any farther.

Now; EVERYTHING i have DISCOVERED in my attempts to figure out what's wrong: - My HDD is perfectly fine (ran a diagnostic)
- RAM = perfectly fine (again, diagnostic)
- I AM ABLE TO INSTALL UBUNTU! A free linux program; however, i'm linux illiterate and really don't have enough time in my life right now to figure it out
- My windows XP CD is fine, seeing's how i tried 3 of them and one of them is absolutely for sure perfectly OK.
- My cd-rom drive is fine, seeing how i went and bought a new dvd-r for 25$ and it still doesn't work
- HD = primary master, DVD-R = secondary slave

Hopefully i didn't miss anything. OK! So... any more ideas for me to try? Or... should I just bite the dust and go get a new mobo and see how god likes me then.Eh, i guess i could have thrown that in... I went and had some 'fun' trying to get crap to work, ended up grabbing Dr D's (?) boot floppy and attacking my computer with fdisk, wiped all partitions, created new ones, and tried to install windows w/ "x:\I386\winnt.exe" in the command prompt... it copied it's files, i restarted, it didn't work.

However, I will try whatever it is you're suggesting when i get home later today.

P.S. 512 RAM.warbling beetle...... Lets back up a bit ....... How long had your pc been working ok ....with win XP before it as you put it "My computer crashes" ?
Did you have all the updates and in particular SP2 .......?
What were you doing when the "CRASH" occurred ?
Quote

My Windows XP CD is fine, seeing how I tried 3 of them and one of them is absolutely OK.
I'm just a bit curious as to how you have 3 original Win XP cds or are they all copies ?

let us know

dl65 a) Windows XP was running fine for PROBABLY 6+ months; I was using it mostly for gaming, MSN, homework, web browsing, normal stuff.

b) I have a legit XP home, copied XP pro, and my friend lent me a XP home legit CD which we had used to install XP on his computer a few days prior.

c) Not to sure what you mean by same controller, my motherboard only has 2 IDE slots, one for primary one for secondary. HD jumpers are set to master, CD set to slave. Not to sure what you mean here Mac.

d) Going to the XP cd and doing my formatting and partitioning from there is what i'm trying to do; however, it won't load properly and freezes before i can get anywhere with it.

e) Yes, i did have SP2 & all updates. I went out for a couple days, my sister phoned to ask if she could use the computer to download music for our grandmother's mp3 player, I said ok, got back and she said it had been acting weird so she shut it off. This is when I found the problem. The crash was basically this; hardware would load, and XP would go to the "windows shut down improperly, safe mode, ect." screen... i would select an option, or let it choose automatically, and instead of loading the computer it would restart and start the whole chain over again.

f) formatting to ntfs; but if i had to settle for fat32, i REALLY wouldn't care ;Pi knows the answer!!!!!

although its over a year later so you probably solved it, or went out and bought a new pc...

nevertheless:

i think your problem is with sata controller bios setting, i had exactly the same with a dell dimension just the other day.
ensure the sata/raid controller is set to work with raid/ata NOT raid/ahci

hope this helps someone out there

Ben
UKIs a bump of such magnitude really necessary?Sure, why not. Just don't do it too often, bsaff. bsaff, our friend, he has IDE drives. No SATA! He has no SATA drives.
We are sorry to hear that you had problems with your Windows.
Bye-bye, see you soon
(I'm mean, I know Don't get mad, I joke sometimes )Try to open the Bios setup screen and load the defaults. If you made no changes to the bios than you don't have to do this step.

Next pull everything out of your computer except the hard drive and CD and floppy and video card and RAM.

Get a boot floppy and put FDISK on it than boot your computer from it and run fdisk to wipe all your drive settings. Than create one BIG "C" drive with FDISK

exit FDISK and than shut your computer off. Than boot with your XP CD and run the install like normal

The 3 major reasons for this is the system is trying to load the wrong driver for a ADD on board...ie. modem or USB card...etc... or your system can't read a hidden part of your hard drive. Dell likes to add a 10 gig hidden drive to do a system restore from. Or you have a bad block on your hard drive and XP gets to it and stops. You will need to swap out a hard drive to test this idea.

I would also suggest you look your system up on dell and read how to do a system restore. You may find that to be easier.

Solve : M$ Word issue?

Answer»

System has XP Home / SP2 with all current updates / AVG AV / Spywareblaster / Defender / Adaware all updated and run regularly.

Problem: M$ Word (Office 2003) will not copy & PASTE only under certain conditions. This has occurred on a Sony Vaio and a custom built system.

When you try to copy/paste, from an email or any other source, the application (M$ Word)hangs. I’ve had the client uninstall / reinstall & update Office. Also have done a repair of Office, all with the same results. I am able to open Word, create a document, then open a new Word document and copy/paste into it with no problem. I’m also able to open Excel, create some values in cells, and then copy/paste that into a Word doc (both the original and the 2nd opened one).

I installed OpenOffice and that works fine as an alternate (a better one that M$ crap) for the client and she likes it fine. I showed her all the advantages of OO and I hope she'll dump M$

Alan <>< I've seen this problem before. Hmm...

Does it make a difference exactly what is being pasted? Pasting from web pages for example can make Word appear to hang whilst it loads everything in.

Also, does it make a difference which method is used to paste? (i.e. Ctrl-V or right-click-->paste or Edit-->paste or clicking the paste button, etc)Hi Rob...how's things?

Does it make a difference exactly what is being pasted?
No, could be text or graphics

Pasting from web pages for example can make Word appear to hang whilst it loads everything in.
Nope, I've set and watched this thing try to paste simple text and it will sit there 'till the cows come home

Also, does it make a difference which method is used to paste? (i.e. Ctrl-V or right-click-->paste or Edit-->paste or clicking the paste button, etc)
Nope again. I tried the keyboard and the mouse with the same results

Alan <><

IMHO, these PEOPLE should NOT own a computer, let alone 3. They are old clients of mine and since I've moved 100 miles north I'm trying to disentangle myself from them. That's why I installed OO, which works beautifully Just checking Alan but have you had them run sfc /scannow yet ? ?You might try disabling Defender, i.e. stop it from running in real-time mode, and see whether that affects this. Is Spywareblaster also normally running in the background? If so, you might try disabling it, too, as a test.patio - no I haven't had them run sfc /scannow.

soybean - How would disabling Spywareblaster & Defender make a difference
I don't question your suggestions, just wondering why

Alan <><
BTW - I have to go back next week for different issues but will definitely take your both of your suggestions.

Thanks Well, sometimes we discover things by experiementation, right? I don't know whether disabling Defender and/or SpywareBlaster will have any affect on this, but I just think it's worth a try. Maybe there's some conflict among applications.

I have Defender installed but have disabled it from running in real-time mode. It seemed to cause a slight performance hit with my system. Besides, with my other protections in place, Defender never finds anything when I run a scan with it.Recently i READ a performance report on anti-malware apps and Windows Defender ranked dead last catching only 81% of the test baddies thrown at it...

I have pruned it from all my machines since then.

If needed i'll track down the report for you guys...it would be NICE to read patio if you dont mind finding it againDone...

Windows Defender is mentioned towards the end. Thanks patio. I'll definitely check this out next week when I go back for other issues on a different system.

Alan <>< thnx

Solve : Windows XP Pro Floppy Help?

Answer»

i used to have an LS-120 and a 5 1/4 floppy drive in my computer LS-120 was A, 5 1/4 was B
i took the LS 120 out and put in a 1.44 Floppy (i disconected the 5 1/4 drive) i changed the Bios to MATCH floppy A is a 1.44 drive

yet windows Xp still sees the 1.44 B when i have a single to single cable on it (AKA i dont have a cable that has A/B connecters

can someone help me Does the BIOS report it as A: when booting ? ?
If so you can change how XP reports it by assigning it the letter A: in Disk Management.yes in bios it shows up as a
when i go into disk managment the floppy doesnt EVEN SHOW up or at least i cant find itMy bad...you should be able to re-label it in My Computer...right click "change drive letter and path"I don't see the option in the right click MENU in My Computer. It is in the right click menu in Disk Management. Maybe he did not right click there.

FCVPI99, take a look in Disk Management again. Right click on a drive and see whether you have the option to change drive letter. On my Win2K machine it is not LISTED in Disk Management even with a floppy in...i think this actually has something to do with the Zip drive software itself...
It's been awhile since i used one but i believe it had to be listed as A: in order to work properly.

Check in Device Manager and see if there is still an LS120 listing...if so remove it and re-boot and see what happens.Ah, I see what you mean. Disk Management does not show floppy drives; at least, I don't see it in Disk Management in my Win XP Pro system. I have a partitioned hard drive, an external hard drive, and two flash drives connected and they all show up in Disk Management, but no floppy drive shown there.I thought i was the one losin' it...

Solve : excel toolbar above top of screen?

Answer»

I have a problem with the toolbar being above the top of the screen. Can't see anything above line 10 on spreadsheet. can't move sheet down to see toolbar. How can i correct this? So, everything above line 10 is above the top of the screen? Weird. If you right click on the Excel taskbar button, what options (Restore, Move, MINIMIZE, Maximize) are AVAILABLE, i.e. not greyed out? Is Maximize available? If so, try it. Please report back. The excel toolbar is not part of the worksheet. You have two different PROBLEMS, I think. One is that your toolbar is hidden. Right-click the menu and re-enable it. The SECOND is that your worksheet panes may be frozen. On the menu: Window-->UNFREEZE panes.

Solve : Outlook Express attachments are deleted?

Answer»

I am running WinXP Pro SP2, Norton AntiVirus 2007, and IE7. Sometimes Outlook Express strips attachments from email messages, and I can't figure out why. I've verified that the OE option to "Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened...." is UNchecked, and Norton is set to "Protect against TIMEOUTS". I cannot detect any pattern of what gets deleted; it doesn't seem to matter what the file extension is, although I 1st noticed the problem with a .zm9, which is a ZONEALARM rename extension for a .zip attachment. Anybody have any idea where I should look next?It could be your AV or even your ISP removing the attachments.
You could ask your ISP if they do that.
As a test try the Eicar site below, it may give us a better handle on this.
http://www.eicar.org/anti_virus_test_file.htmDo you see this happen at your END or the recipient's end? Are the attachments that get deleted always large files? Maybe your ISP, or the ISP of your recipients, has a limit on the file size for attachments. It is on the recipient's end. The same attachment gets delivered to others on the send-to list, including those using the same email host. It's just this one recipient that has the problem, so I'd say that rules out the size issue (which is 5MB, and the attachment isn't that large), and the ISP. I checked the ISP settings, and nothing is flagged to DELETE anything.
Thanks for the reply.I think I'd find a file that fails when you try to send it to yourself and then try it with your AV turned off.Good plan. Thanks. And, what email client is that recipient using? Outlook Express has a setting (Tools, Options, SECURITY) for "Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus." That could be what's going on at his end.Sorry, I meant to say that the settings I 1st detailed were for the recipient's PC. That setting is set to "unchecked" on his OE.

Waiting for a colleague to provide the "always fails attachment".....

Solve : Help me ! Its urgent?

i was having xpsp2 installed on my SYSTEM,today i wanted to load fedora linux also into my system,it was installed correctly and was working fine, but when i started to work on my previously installed xp it didnot boot and showed the messange "NTLDR missing
PRESS ctrl-alt-del to restart" after restarting it showed the same message,so i tried to install a fresh copy of xp on my pc but the bootable disc didnot boot,it shows the message press any key to boot from cd and after that the screen goes blanck,i tried to install several os from sp1,media centre edition, windows 2000,but none of them goes to boot, now i dont know what to do with my system, one thing i want to add is that my linux is working fine.
Somebody pls help meSounds like the Linux installed messed up your boot partition for Windows. SORRY I don't have much experience in Linux yet but maybe Rob will be by and help.

Alan <>< You did partition your harddrive correctly, right? Do you have GRUB installed? You need to install XP first, then install Linux.

Normally after Linux is installed, it will find the Windows partition and tells you it's ok to install GRUB. Use GRUB as your boot loader and put your Windows on the chainloader. When you boot up, GRUB will present a MENU, Linux kernel, Linux recovery and Mem test, then Windows is under Other operating system. You can do this with LILO or even Windows' own startup menu. Depends on how you like it. I found using GRUB is the better way.

Go to /boot/grub/menu.lst or /etc/lilo.conf if your are using LILO. Make a copy of it and post it here.

One of my PCs can boot into Win98, WIN2K, WinXP, Ubuntu, Mepis and Debian.

Have you tried running Windows Update / done a system restore to a point before this STARTED happening?

Alan <>< Yes I ran Windows update, but came back with no new updates.
I ALSO system restored to a point before this happened, but now when the computer is re booted, all I get is a blinking dash on the left top corner, I re boot again press scape to reboot from the hard drive.

Still, every time a start a program the same window installer option appears, that says "preparing to install", I let it go for a minute or two, and then te program starts.

Solve : window xp and ie issue?

Answer»

have xp with APPARENTLY sp1 .. all versions of ie will not load nor install..
some want sp2 .. sp2 will not install say missing components. mozilla
works but will often starts many sites and then freeze for 1-4minutes then loads.
no virus detected nor any other programs running. many web PAGES
will go white till the one loading finally succeeds in loading.. all after
1-4 minutes ..any ideas??? Me thinks a good formatting of the hard drive and fresh installation of windows would solve your problem, at least for a little while.

What spyware protection are you using? What firewall?

You don't know WHETHER you have SP2 for Win XP installed? Right click on My Computer and select Properties. What do you see on the General tab?

All Windows computers come with IE. With Win XP, you either have IE 6 or IE 7. What do you have?

ie and sp2 will not install . ie on the computer will not run "syntax error" then
closes. mozilla will install and run fine , unless web page is involved then
ALL other open pages go totally "white" till the newly requested page
is finally LOADED 1-4minutes. can not install sp2 without ie7 but can not
install ie7 to get the sp2!! what to do?? why does mozilla work without
too much effort??Instead of intiating the update to SP2 via Windows Updates, go here, download the SP2 file, and then install it.

What the capacity of your hard drive? How much free space do you have on your hard drive? How long since you ran a disk cleanup utility (Windows Disk Cleanup or a third party utility such as CCleaner)? How long since you defragmented your hard drive?

sp2 downloads but will not install , usually just extracts then
closes. did get "cannot verify crytopgraphics" for a brief flash..

Solve : Print from Windows Explorer??

Answer»

Any WAY to print out the list of all (or some of) my folders and files as shown in Windows Explorer (XP Home)?

Thanks in advance for your help! --DennisTry the 'print' command. In command prompt type 'print /?'
I think it only prints .TXT files though. This MAY help (Printfolder).
Hope that helps, and kudos to WillyW.Quote from: Carbon Dudeoxide on March 31, 2007, 07:33:56 AM

Try the 'print' command. In command prompt type 'print /?'
I think it only prints .txt files though.
It's not QUITE that SIMPLE, is it? I tried that and got this response:
PRINT [/D:device] [[drive:][path]filename[...]]

Here's way I know to do it. Open a Command Prompt. Navigate to the specific directory you want a list from. Then, at the prompt, type dir *.* >list.txt [or whatever name you want to give the file]. Then, just open it with Notepad and print it.

Solve : A Question That Needs To Be Answered?

Answer»

Which one of the following ports allows multiple devices to be CONNECTED to a common bus?Well i can admit it...you got me on that one.

p.s. (USB)I wish my homework was this easy.this should explain it!!

Abstract: A serial communications interface is DESCRIBED that enables the extension of an internal Communications Bus Architecture (CBA) bus segment to one or more external devices. The interface accomplishes this function by serializing bus transactions in one device, transferring the serial transaction between devices via one interface port, and de-serializing the transaction in the external device. The general features include low pin count (as few as three signals), simple packet based transfer protocol for memory mapped access, symmetric operation, simple block CODE formatting, supports both HOST to peripheral and peer to peer transactions, and support multiple outstanding transactions.
Claim: The invention claimed is:

1. A communications system for enabling extension of an internal common bus architecture (CBA) bus segment of a first physical semiconductor chip device to an internalCBA bus segment of a second external physical semiconductor chip device comprising: a first serial communications interface module in said first semiconductor chip device of varying bit width at transmit and receive pins coupled to said internal bussegment of said first semiconductor chip device for serializing bus transaction from said first device to an output port of said first device; a second serial communications interface module in said second semiconductor chip external device of varyingbit width at transmit and receive pins coupled to said internal bus segment for said second semiconductor chip device for de-serializing data received at an input port for said second device for providing an extension of said internal CBA bus segment insaid second device to external physical devices at an input port and an external serial connector for transferring the serialized transaction between first and second devices at said input and output ports using semiconductor chip protocols; saidmodules carrying CBA bus commands, interrupt and confimiration operations in band over the same transmit and receive pins.

2. The system of claim 1 wherein multiple outstanding CBA bus transactions are sent and received.

3. The system of claim 1 wherein said second serial communications interface module in said second external device is daisy chain coupled between said internal bus segment of said second device and other peripheral devices through externalserial cablings.

4. A communications system for enabling extension of an internal common bus architecture (CBA) segment of a first physical device to an internal CBA bus segment of a second external physical device comprising: a first serial communicationsinterface module of varying bit width at transmit and receive pins in said first device coupled between said internal bus segment of said first device and an input and output port of said first device for serializing bus transactions from said firstdevice and said output port of said first device and de-serializing data received at said input port of said first device; a second serial communications interface module of varying bit width at transmit and receive pins in said second external devicecoupled between said internal bus segment of said second device and an input and output port of said second device for serializing bus transactions from said second device and said output port of said second device and de-serializing data received atsaid input port of said second device; and an external serial connector coupled to said input and output ports of said first and second devices for transferring the serialized transaction between first and second devices; said modules carrying CBA buscommands, interrupt and configuration operations in band over the same CONNECTIONS and said modules providing serial width negotiation between said modules.

5. The system of claim 4 wherein said second serial communications interface module in said second external device is daisy chain coupled between said internal bus segment of said second device and other peripheral devices through externalserial cablings.

6. The system of claim 4 wherein said first and second modules each provide address translation between devices.

7. The system of claim 4 wherein a width detection mechanism is used.

8. The system of claim 4 wherein said modules will send out width negotiation protocol to determine the width at the transmit and receive pins.

9. The system of claim 4 wherein said first and second modules each provide a set of registers.

10. The system of claim 6 wherein said first and second modules include encoding and decoding.

11. A communications system for enabling extension of an internal common bus architecture (CBA) segment of a first physical device to an internal CBA bus segment of a second external physical device comprising: a first serial communicationsinterface module in said first device coupled between said internal bus segment of said first device and an input and output port of said first device for serializing bus transactions from said first device and said output port of said first device andde-serializing data received at said input port of said first device; a second serial communications interface module in said second external device coupled between said internal bus segment of said second device and an input and output port of saidsecond device for serializing bus transactions from said second device and said output port of said second device and de-serializing data received at said input port of said second device; and an external serial cable coupled to said input and outputports of said first and second devices for transferring the serialized transaction between first and second devices; said first and second modules each provide outbound and inbound command First In First Out (FIFO) registers and return data FIFOregisters. **just kidding sorry.....**
