Solve : Dell Optiplex 320 tower?

Answer»

I have installed an additional drive in my computer and it has power but I'm unsure of which plug on the mother board to use for the data CABLE. One is black the other is white. Have acutally tried both but could not get the computer to see addtional hard drive connection USING either plug.

Thanks. Is the data cable IDE or SATA?
By looking at the motherboard for that system, I'm confused.. You SAY your using either a white or black CONNECTOR on the motherboard. The only IDE/pata connector on the board is black, and there is one blue sata connector and three black sata connectors..

Edit: my bad.. you must be using a sata drive... I saw another picture of the board..

Try connecting the drive to the connector next to blue connector... When your computer boots up, enter the BIOS and see if the drive is showing up in the inventory.. If the drive is showing up in the system, exit out and boot Windows normally and see if it shows up...

Solve : Random Crashes?

Answer»

Okay I don't really know where to go from what I've already done.

Today my computer keeps crashing whenever I try to play World of Warcraft, or attempt to do anything more than look at a single webpage at a time. Except facebook, it freezes on that too. On occassion when it seemed like it would work while I was playing WoW, WoW would freeze but my messenger would keep working for quite some time before freezing as well. I kinda think it might be a virus of some sort since this started immediatly after Avira blocked a few Rootkits for me, but Avira isn't picking up anything.

I've already run Avira, SuperAntispyware, a Registry Cleaner, Defrag, and run a Harddrive Diagnostic. Nothing unusual has shown up. Where can I go from there?

If you need specific data from my computer, tell me how to find it. I'm not used to looking up my bios or anything.

ThanksYou may need to reformat and re-install windows. Let me know if you need help on that - i do it all the time on my system since i'm online 24 / 7 and i do it about four times a year!Quote from: wslghisabc on February 22, 2010, 02:06:41 PM

You may need to reformat and re-install windows. Let me know if you need help on that - i do it all the time on my system since i'm online 24 / 7 and i do it about four times a year!
Okay, you need to stop telling people to reformat their systems. And the fact that you do it four times a year is NOT something to brag about. You might try a clean boot to see if something in startup is affecting your computer.

Otherwise, if you have had rootkits, you may have to go into the malware help section.1. Please avoid using registry cleaners. For the average user they create more problems than they solve.

2. If your system has been "crashing" you may have some memory dumps that could be examined. Find and examine the "Minidump" directory. The directory path is probably "C:\Windows\Minidump".

Are there any dumps in there whose date-time-group coorelates with time of crashes?

3. A "Clean Boot" is an excellent idea, but it might be easier for you to start with a Safe Mode boot. Both methods allow you to boot to a minimal configuration. If that works OK, it would suggest your problem lies with the hardware, software drivers, or additional applications (ESPECIALLY video drivers and security suite software) that your normal boot currently loads.Okay I checked Minidump and nothing in there correlated to my crashes.

I also did a clean boot but I still crashed.

I ran it a second time with the same settings, and it crashed again but a good 20 minutes into me using my computer. So it doesnt usually crash right AWAY, but SOMETIMES works for a long time before crashing.

So yeh, still being random and temperamental.Quote from: Vega on February 21, 2010, 10:01:55 PM
I kinda think it might be a virus of some sort since this started immediatly after Avira blocked a few Rootkits for me, but Avira isn't picking up anything.
1. Malware. You should ensure your system is "clean" (not infected) before any serious recovery effort. (And yes, that includes "rootkits" if anyone knows how to detect them.) See what the boys over at "Graves and Registration" have to say. Oh wait... Your computer is still warm!

See here.

2. Backup Data. Backup any data you can't afford to lose...

3. Minidumps.
a. How many dumps were in "C:\Windows\Minidump"?
b. What were the "date(s)" (for the last three)?

4. Clean Boot.
a. Which "clean boot" did you perform?
b. Method 2, Step 4; permanently removes all restore points from your computer. Probably best, not to do that yet.

5. Restore Points. Do you still have your system restore points?

6. Event Viewer. Look for anything interesting in the Windows event logs. To access: Start -> Run -> type "eventvwr.msc" without quotes and hit key.

7. Monitor Temperatures. Download and install a program to monitor the temperature sensors within your computer system. A couple to choose from:
a. SpeedFan 4.40
b. HWMonitor

Don't just take my word for it... See Is there a way to tell how hot my CPU is running?

8. Hardware Diagnostics. Test the system RAM and/or the hard disk drive. Even if you don't believe they are the problem and see if the "freezes" follow you there. If they don't, maybe it's not a "heat" or "hardware" issue.
a. General. Disconnect and/or remove any "extra" cards or peripheral devices you don't need to eliminate them as the source of the problem.
b. Memory. Download the "free" diagnostic software at either www.memtest86.com or www.testmem86.org and create the desired bootable media. Boot the program and let it run indefinitely ( key to exit).
c. Hard Drive. Most hard drive manufacturers provide "free" diagnostic software to test their drives. Find the appropriate download for your drive, download the software, and create the desired bootable media. Boot the program and run the non-destructive tests (don't overwrite your data). See Hard Drive Diagnostics Tools and UTILITIES (TTID #287).

9. System File Checker (sfc). To eliminate missing or corrupt system files as the source of your problems you could run "sfc" UTILITY. It might ask for your Windows XP Install CD (to replace missing or corrupt system files), so have it handy. It would be best if CD was up to service pack level of your installation.

Solve : 2nd try, Please help! Stuck in Log-on/Log-off Loop. Need to Log in?

Answer»

Copy of original post:

My daughter's EEE PC Netbook 1005HAB (No Optical Drive) picked up the infamous Internet Security 2010 virus with all of its annoying popups. I RAN Malware Bytes and upon reboot (as the program asked), the PC got stuck in a Log-on/Log-off loop (log in, brief flash of desktop background, log off) and is no longer able to log in. No luck in safe mode EITHER. She doesn't have backup of all of her school work (another sore subject) so a clean wipe isn't an option at this POINT. Any guidance to be able to once again log in and clean any remaining problems would be very much appreciated. I work swings so replies may be odd hours. Thanks, Gary

More info as of 2/26:

The netbook runs XP. Since the original request ran a week with 36 views and no responses, I thought I'd give up and just pull the hard drive and save all important data via a USB/SATA cable. The problem with that idea is this netbook requires a complete disassembly (remove keyboard and crack CASES, remove cables, heatsinks , etc.) to access the HD and I really am not feeling it.

Any way to access the drive via network (Cat cable hardwire) from another PC over a network even without being able to log in? Know how to make a bootable USB Flash Drive so I can replace the messed up startup files? I'm not a complete idiot, just need a jumpstart to get going again. Thanks in advance, Gary

Solve : sharing documents between administrator and limited accounts in Windows XP Pro?

Answer»

In Windows XP Pro, in addition to an administrator account, I also have a limited account for going online. (Yes, I also take virtually all of the other recommended precautions against malware.)

I want my administrator and limited accounts to be able to share all my documents (as well as my favorites and Desktop items), with the limited account to have the same privileges as my administrator account to create, read, write, edit, save, and delete these documents.

And I would like to apply these requirements not only to documents to be created after I implement this scenario, but also to documents that already exist. And would like the whole IMPLEMENTATION to be SIMPLE and easy to USE.

Maybe I'm just not looking in the right places, but so far I haven't found anything on the net that TELLS me (clearly, at least) how to do all this as I've just described.

Any suggestions?
Just use the Shared Documents folder.

Solve : Adminisrator...I need control (My kids are killing my usage.. Help please ! )?

Answer»

Hello all ! I have tried to lead the horse to water . Yet my 16 year old has been caught on a porn site 3 days ago ! My 12 year old and 10 year olds boys have successfully downloaded NORTON , and mcaffy on top of my avg . Whenever my back is turned my KIDS access web sites which i have told them...time after time... Not to access . I have allowed my kids to access BEBO to talk with their friends . Yet everytime time i look the other way i am getting SLAPPED in the face ! Please can someone guide me through the routine required to have complete CONTROL of what sites are accsessible to my kids . I need administrator capibilities but i dont know how to activate it on my computer. I also want to limit the sites that my kids are accessing. I need to run my buisseness and allow my wife to access her programs , websites , and files as a seperate user from my kids . Is this possible ? Please help i am at my wits end with this behavior ! Thanks . http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&client=firefox-a&hs=PkF&rls=org.mozilla%3Aen-US%3Aofficial&q=control+what+sites+children+can+access&aq=f&aqi=&oq=Awesome thank you alan again ! Much appreciated ! You can also go into User Accounts and give your children Standard Accounts instead of Administrator Group accounts.

They will resent this because they will need your permission EVERY time they want to install a program, but it will prevent them from messing up your system like they did with installing Norton and Macafee.

Solve : KVM Switch Question??

Answer»

I just installed a Emine 2-Port PS/2 KVM Switch w/Cables on my xp pcs
now when I START and switch over to the second pc it switches over ok, but ALL I get is all my programs come up In Notepad as .exe's
I cannot start anything it just keeps bringing up Notepad.ex's
It is a clean pc(no virus's etc) and it was running pefectly before hooking up the kvm switch.
Can ANYONE enlighten me as to what could be wrong, is the switch no good?I run a KVM, and I can't SEE how it could be the cause of your issues, unless a defective one could be seriously messing up the keyboard or mouse inputs. But I still don't see what kind of KB or mouse input would explain that behavior.

Did you receive a driver disk with it? I wonder if you got a counterfeit one with malware. Mine uses no driver. Just hook up and it works.

What happens if you remove the KVM and just switch your mouse, keyboard, and monitor manually between them? Do both computers work okay WITHOUT the KVM?

Just for fun, try to right click on one of the .exe's for the Properties box. Does it show Notepad as the default application to open it?Be good to know also if the 2nd machine was having any issues prior to this...Solved, I found a fix using this>>>

http://windowsxp.mvps.org/exeasso.htm

It now works perfectly. dont know what caused it in the first place but it must have something to do with that switch, pc was runnng ok before and No virus etc. oh well, atleast it works now, Thank You All, TomThat's not a KVM issue, it's a file association issue. You can use your KVM.

Solve : Slow computer .?

Answer»

Hello again everyone Its been a while since i have posted but i havent had the need to do so until now . My new computer has started to slow right down my loading bar wont move when i try to log onto my facebook account and its EXTREMELY slow loading bebo account as well ! It loads my MSN home page fine and it loads my home page links fine as well such as weather and news ! My theory is registry keys overload what do you think ? And my warranty has expired btw ! It started loading slowly 2-3 days ago and has done ever since ! Should i trade it in now before i accumulate a bigger headache ? Oh and can someone piont me in the direction to get everest free ..i accidently downloaded the zipped file and i have now deleted it ..but i want it back in the easy form so i can keep an eye on things ! Oh and the new homepage at facebook was added to my account and i think this may be partly the reason because since that happened 3 days ago the problems started . Sorry about all the Dribble in this post but i am getting a bit concerned ! Thanks for the help people ! Is the system slow or are internet sites loading slowly? That's two different things.

Registry keys overload? What does that mean? Never mind - I don't want to know - just stay out of the registry.

I'm guessing it's a malware issue anyway. GO to the malware forum and follow the instructions at the TOP of that page.Thank you alan for the reply it appears that this issue is resolved i guess it was a server issue optus has had some problems and this is the reason . I gained 15 days of free usage from them due to this fault being on their behalf ! Thank you !Good DEAL. Thanks for the follow up. Quote from: lakmali on February 24, 2010, 05:29:57 AM

Solve : Reinstalling XP w/a different key?

Answer»

I have a Compaq Presario.
I've had it for about 8 years now. I know! How did it last that long?! I don't know.
I'm thinking about reinstalling the OS [Windows XP home edition 2002 edition], I can't make any of the recovery disks, BUT I have an OLD disk w/Windows XP Professional.
Is it possible for me to clean install XP Professional and reuse the key that came w/the Compaq to begin with?

I'm too scared to try it, and a little aggravated from scouring the Internets in search of an answer. I'm going to gift it and WORKING on a deadline.
Any suggestions will HELP!As long as you have the activation code on the original laptop machine this is perfectly legal and within your rights...

You can use any XP CD to do so as long as the versions match.Understand any data on there will be gone...and don't forget about Windows Updates.
SP service packs are available for DLoad.

You nay also want to go online and get all the laptop DRIVERS from the laptop makers site...

EDIT:

Just re-read your Post...you can't install Pro on a Home machine...activation won't work...borrow an XP Home CD.EDIT:

Just re-read your Post...you can't install Pro on a Home machine...activation won't work...borrow an XP Home CD.
Does it have to be the same Home CD though?
I mean the pc came w/Windows Home service pack 1.
It crashed when I tried to upgrade to service pack 2, so does it have to be a CD w/Windows Home svp1 or can it be w/a svp2/3?
because all the windows disks i have found come w/svp 2/3, and I'm afraid that the key won't work if I try to install that version typeThe key should work fine.

But if you have access to an SP2 CD i'd try that 1 and then update to SP3,
If there is any glitch all it will take is an 800# Phone call to MS after the install...
For this you have 90 days to do so.He will probably have an issue because the Compaq product key is most likely for OEM disks only. This does not create an issue...

And if there is as i said above he's a phone call away.

Solve : xp shows caption of error and restarts again and again it self?

Answer»

sir
I have windows xp, its SPEED was very SLOW so i changed its RAM from 128 512 mb. now when ever i starts it a caption occured on the screen regarding error and asked me to send the message to microsoft, but even then it is not corrected. Secondly when ever i OPEN the internet explorer the same caption occured again after few MINUTES, and the internet explorer closed it self and it is not possible to open it again until unless it is restarted or some time it restarted it self again and again1. Error Message. What is the "exact" message you're getting? Sometimes it is possible to search Internet (google) on a substring of the message for the cause and/or resolution.

2. Is it "Internet Explorer" which continually restarts or is the system in a continuous reboot cycle?

3. Auto Reboot Cycle. You should disable setting for "automatic restart on system failure" to break the reboot cycle. If it stops on a Blue Screen of Death (BSOD), post the "exact" STOP code string (including its four parameters) along with any short error message and/or filename it might finger as possible culprit.

Start button -> right-click My_Computer -> Properties -> Advanced tab -> Settings button within "Startup and Recovery" subsection -> Uncheck "AUTOMATICALLY restart" -> OK button -> OK button. And have you checked to see if the additional RAM will run on that machine ? ?
Not all RAM is created equal...Sir
I chnaged the ram again and the problem is solved as it was due to only by that wrong configration ram.
Thanks for your help.Good to hear you are fixed up doctor...

Solve : D:\ is not a valid Win32 Application??

Answer»

For some reason, whenever I attempt to click my D:\ drive to use the CD i put into my computer, the message "D:\ is not a valid Win32 Application" comes up and NOTHING happens. This has never happened before, and I just had a massive overload of viruses, so I'm ASSUMING it has something to do with viruses affecting my computer. And I'm pretty sure its not my CD that has the problem, since I tried another CD and it SHOWED the same error. Does anyone know of a way to run my CD? I only need to run it once (I'm ATTEMPTING to run the Windows XP CD to completely WIPE my computer since its becoming very bad).
My computer is an hp intel pentium 4 with 512 mb of ram (yes i know it sucks) with windows SP2

EDIT: I found the answer...It seems that both disks were infected. I just tried both of them on another computer and they both did not work. Sorry. What do you mean the discs were infected ? ?

Even if by chance they were this would not be the error message you would recieve...if even you would recieve one...probably not.Quote from: sonicfan1012 on February 24, 2010, 05:45:35 PM

If you want to do a fresh install of XP, you boot to the disc. running the CD from within windows will only do a upgrade install, and only on Win95,98, NT4, or 2000.

Solve : bypassing an old network log in and password?

Answer»

I have computer that was SET up on a network. I now want to use it as a stand alone at home. I get the log in screen and since it's no longer attached to the network I cannot get past the log in screen. I've tried using "administrator" as the user name and leaving the password blank as well as using the administrator password from the old network. I cannot get past this screen. I have all the discs that came with the computer. Can I somehow reinstall the OPERATING system? Or wipe out the network settings? LAPTOP or desktop ? ?I just cannot REMEMBER what is the field at the bottom of the login screen. but that is where you select where to login selection are "local computer" and "domain" you have to select "local computer" then use your admin password.

By the way if you have all you installation CD then I would suggest making a new install... this is also good because it will make your system FRESH again

I hope that helps...

Solve : \windows\system32\config\system?

Answer»

I was deleting some antivirus' as directed by the CA tech help people as I was trying to install the new CA internet security suite 2010, and something bad happened and now all I get when I TURN it on is this; windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt.\windows\system32\config\system I dont have the original setup CD-ROM. It is windows xp. I have tried the F8 button to start in safe mode, no good. CA gave up and said I should take it to a technician, any ideas?Download the Windows Recovery Console .iso (http://forums.pcpitstop.com/index.php?showtopic=150212) and burn it to CD.

Boot to the XP CD and select R (Recovery Console)

At the command prompt type:

ren c:\windows\system32\config\system system.old
copy c:\windows\repair\system c:\windows\system32\config

RebootThanks Allan, as I couldn't borrow a working computer to read your reply until much later, I took it to some repair shops. The first one quoted at least $135 and they were not sure if it would work, so I took it to a more reputable one where they worked on it for 4 hours doing all sorts of secret computer technician stuff. I was freaking out THINKING this will cost a fortune but it was only $35. They managed to save all my important desktop stuff, documents and pictures, and they must have put a new windows xp in because I had to download all new programmes LIKE msn hotmail and homepage and startup is empty. (good). I'm sure your method would have worked and I hope it helps others, and I will stay away from CA. Sorry you had to spend anything. It's a common issue and solution. Well, as LONG as you're up and running now...

Solve : XP Home to XP PRO?

Answer»

Hello,

I have an old computer sitting around that currently has XP Home. I have an XP Pro Disc/Key and am looking ot upgrade it. when I try to do the upgrade from the xp pro disc, I get the ERROR that "my version of windows is too new" which LEAVES me to believe that the only way im going to be able to upgrade is with a new install. If i remember correctly i had to do the same thing when i went from vista 32 to 7 64 on my other comp. Will this upgrade from home to pro via install when i boot from the disc erease all my data? You can do an in-place upgrade. Boot to the XP Pro cd and let it upgrade your installation. DO NOT format. There's never any harm in backing up critical data. Even better, use disk imaging software.Officially it’s impossible to upgrade XP Home to XP Pro, as far as Microsoft thinks, they are one of the same. However, PRO is must better and more stable. Normally the way to do it is backup all data and reformat. There is a hack if you want to try it:

1.Open Registry Editor (Start / Run / regedit).
2.Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/ControlSet00X/Control/ProductOptions, where ControlSet00X is the one with the highest number.
3.Delete the ProductSuite registry key (backup first using export key option is recommended).
4.Then, create a new DWORD value and named it as Brand.
5.Set the “Brand” value data as 0.
6.Reboot the system.
7.On boot up after the BIOS screen, press F8 to display Windows
XP Startup Menu.
8.Choose Last Known Good Configuration (LNG) and hit Enter.
Windows XP will start up as usual. After logging into the desktop, check the system properties to verify that it’s now Windows XP Professional.

Now, it's not really WinXP Pro and doesn't have the features, but the OS at least thinks it is now.

You should be able to use your WinXP Pro CD and re-install the OS over top without lossing any data.Pro isn't any more stable then home... they use the exact same kernel...Quote from: Allan on February 25, 2010, 12:32:02 PM

You can do an in-place upgrade. Boot to the XP Pro cd and let it upgrade your installation. DO NOT format. There's never any harm in backing up critical data. Even better, use disk imaging software.

so just to verify this will only write over the windows xp home data not my documents and such. Also the key is an upgrade key. Will it still alow me to use that key? That's exactly what you are doing, upgrading.Quote from: Azzaboi on February 25, 2010, 12:51:14 PM
Officially it’s impossible to upgrade XP Home to XP Pro, as far as Microsoft thinks, they are one of the same.
What the *censored* are you talking about??I said it's more stable, because of the features for duo-core and quad-core computers:

Multi-processor support - Windows XP Pro supports up to two microprocessors, while Home Edition supports only one.

It also has Automated System Recovery (ASR), removed the Backup utility of XP Home.

Dynamic Disk Support, Home doesn't support this (for newer hard drives).

http://www.williamaford.com/XPHomevsXPPro.php

I wouldn't be caught dead using Home version of any Microsoft Product... but maybe THATS just me and my 100% never CRASHED OS (for anything microsoft I think that's pretty good) - WinXP PRO SP3 32bit and Win7 Ultimate 64bit.

As for 'unarmedmaster' question:

The above I posted is a hack to get around the issue of WinXP detecting a newer version of Windows and refusing to install. Only use it if you need to.

The issue you are facing is that you can't upgrade on a full cd version. There is upgrade CDs but I'm sure those are for early version like Windows 98 to XP, etc, so wouldn't help either.

Since Win XP Home has been updated online, it is (in Microsoft eyes), newer than the WinXP Pro on the disc.

The idea is to not lose any data of your exisiting windows, as for the Windows Key I'm not 100% sure how it will affect it. Home wouldn't accept the product ID of XP Pro, and via versa. You can change the product key from registry as well if needed, but it should complain and let you reactivate the OS anyways. You have absolutely no idea what you are talking. None. Zip. I don't think there is one intelligent or factual STATEMENT in your posts.

unarmedmaster - Please ignore all posts by Azzaboi.Oh ouch, thats hurts Allan
I not telling anyone what to do or not to do, but I do research all my answers, I don't post crap...

http://www.mydigitallife.info/2008/06/13/convert-and-upgrade-windows-xp-home-to-professional-without-reinstalling/You don't understand what you are reading or posting. Please - when you don't know what you are talking about it's best to be silent.I fully understand the question, he is having issues with upgrading as it saying the current version is too new:

Quote
I have an XP Pro Disc/Key and am looking ot upgrade it. when I try to do the upgrade from the xp pro disc, I get the error that "my version of windows is too new" which leaves me to believe that the only way im going to be able to upgrade is with a new install.

I already knew this issue and heard of that hack (fake it's version) which will allow a reinstall of XP Pro overtop without losing data. The only other way I know is to backup the data and re-format (but it was just another option).

I wish all the best in the upgrade and not to fight.Quote from: Azzaboi on February 25, 2010, 01:32:58 PM

Again, you don't know what you are talking about. PLEASE stop.I have known of that registry hack but would rather not do it. The Inplace upgrade from what im reading is the best idea for me since it wont erease my data.

Solve : administrative / limited dual accounts & the internet?

Answer»

In Windows XP, in addition to an administrative account, I have a limited account for the internet (to help safeguard against malware).

Should I log off of my administrative account before accessing the net via my limited account?

And is there any way for a website to infect you other than actually GOING to that website?Using a standard account INSTEAD of an administrator account means that if malware slips in while you are using the computer, the permissions set will not be adminstrator, which can limit the damage.

Remotely hacking your computer like you hear in high profile cases on the news is unlikely if you are not a high profile target.

Most malware is DESIGNED to cast a wide net to get as many victims as possible. More computers are infected with social engineering, that is, getting people to visit sites they shouldn't, DOWNLOADING things they shouldn't and clicking on things they shouldn't.

My PIII has 4 slots with 2-256MB & 1-128MM, 640MB total. I was attempting to get to 1GB, but all of the newly acquired 256's, SHOWED as 128MB. Therefore, my success rate is 50%.I meant that it works on approx. 80% of MBoards/machines...a Pentium 3 machine that can only hold 128MB per slot? now that's weird.

I had 1GB in my K6-2. then I went down to 512MB, then down to 256MB, since the chipsets cacheable range was only 256MB.good to know ill try it out

a Pentium 3 machine that can only hold 128MB per slot? now that's weird.

Blame the chipset. The limitation is the chip set on the motherboard itself. it SIMPLY can not address more then 128MB of ram per slot.

If that doesnt work , Ill use EVEREST to find out the SPECIFICS of my computer, that is video card manufacturer etc

Operating system / antivirus & antispyware protection / service packs installed / when did it start happening / did it ever work right / installed any new SOFTWARE?

Alan <>< Operating System is Windows XP Service Pack2. It was working right before and just went off about a month ago. I did formatted the hard disk and reinstalled XP but it still happening. Do you think it's hardware related?Boot to "Safe Mode", login, see if it "freezes".I did that and its still the same. If it happens after clean INSTALL, must be some hardware issue.

*** Run hard drive diagnostics: http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287 (or http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic28744.html)
Make sure, you select TOOL, which is appropriate for the brand of your hard drive.
Depending on the program, it'll create bootable floppy, or bootable CD.
If downloaded file is of .iso type, use ImgBurn: http://www.imgburn.com/ to burn .iso file to a CD (select "Write image file to disc" option), and make the CD bootable.

NOTE. If your hard drive is made by Toshiba, unfortunately, you're out of luck, because Toshiba doesn't provide any diagnostic tool.

*** A. If you have more than one RAM module installed, try starting computer with one RAM stick at a time.

NOTE Keep in mind, the manual check listed above is always superior to the software check, listed below. DO NOT proceed with memtest, if you can go with option A

B. If you have only one RAM stick installed...
...run memtest...

1. Download - Pre-Compiled Bootable ISO (.zip)
2. Unzip downloaded memtest86+-....iso.zip file.
3. Inside, you'll find memtest86+-....iso file.
4. Download, and install ImgBurn: http://www.imgburn.com/
5. Insert BLANK CD into your CD drive.
6. Open ImgBurn, and click on Write image file to disc
7. Click on Browse for a file... icon:

8. Locate memtest86+-....iso file, and click Open button.
9. Click on ImgBurn green arrow to start burning bootable memtest86 CD:

10. Once the CD is created, boot from it, and memtest will automatically start to run.

The running program will look something like this depending on the size and number of ram modules installed:

It's recommended to run 5-6 passes. Each pass contains very same 8 tests.

This will show the progress of the test. It can take a while. Be patient, or leave it running overnight.

I removed a hard DISK from my PC in the office and brought it home to USE it on my PC but my password is not accepted.I cannot log in using the password i use in the office.

My PC in the office is setup on the network. Will that have any thing to do with this? It will depend on the SOFTWARE your using to protect. Need more details like:

Which Operating System are you using on the hard DRIVE?
What software is used to password protect, is it Windows or a stronger software?
Is it the entire hard drive encrypted or just like a Windows password?I am using Windows XP SP2.
There is no software used to protect password, its only windows.

The hard drive is not encripted. Its just the Windows password.Take Ownership...

Is E: a Recovery Partition PERHAPS ? ?

I have attached a picture. Hopefully you can tell from it how I can fix the prongs or the receiver holes. Let me know

Ok the first part of your lead the one attatched to the plug. Can you attach that to a microwave or oven or fridge or anything that uses a tri port plug??watch or well have to deem your post as hazord. No we have dual plugged microwaves that I know of so something like that wouldnt connect.its gonna be hard to find something that uses a triport plug, but anyway here in the us, most of the big appliances have their power cords attached within a sealed rubber casing.

ANYWAYS even if I had such an applliance to plug it into , what would it tell me? I already know it works and that it delivers power. I just need to fix the connection so it doesnt always lose good contact
squall, no disrespect but I really cant understand what youre trying to say in your posts.
Sorry my bad I forgot that we use three and you guy's use two without an earth. I'm just trying to test the cable mate. messing with electrical equipment and not being able to full understand the risk isnt good. If you had like a crt and opened it with out it discargheing it could shoot you acrossed the ROOM. Also, I think he wanted to try swaping cords out. But we know its the transformer/converter. Its called ground aside from THINGS like ovens have it but then your dealing with higher wattage.the cable works, I just have to apply tension to it one WAY when it is connected, so that the light on the adapter thing comes on signaling that it is getting power through the cable. The minute I release the tension the light goes out, so there is a fault in the connection, it isnt snug
how do i make it snug
squall,

you are right, it is good to know how to mess with electrical equipment, and I do. I just need to know what to do to make the connection snug so it doesnt lose contact, so theres no real opening of electrical equipment

As I said from the very beginning electricity is my forte. Does your AC adapter get hot? I said from the beginning that I would start at the plug and work my way up.you couldnt take like a gum band and let it do it for ya? I'm sorry squall no idea what that means??well i took a pair of pliars and squeezed the female end (the ond withouot the prongs). And it worked
Well there you go. Sorry we were not more specific..I do try. But atleast the female has found the right place!ha ha, I ment that the way you done it would work with a rubber band too probably.

Solve : Changeing my New Drives letter to C:\?

Answer»

Hi all, need some help / advice please.

Just bought a new hard drive and now want to install Windows on new drive, cause the new Hard drive is much faster. But I all ready have Windows installed on other drive. Can anyone tell me how does one get the new drive to be assigned as the C: Drive...

Basically want to Install Windows on my newer faster Hard drive and have it assigned as my main C:\ Drive and then copy my Stuff back from my Old main drive and that can then be assigned another letter. DRIVES needs to swop places basically.

I thought about, unplugging all other SATA drives and then INSTALLING Windows to new drive, which will then be C:\ but now IM not sure, what will happen when I plug my old hard drive back, don't want to lose any data on the old drive or take the chance of corrupting the old drives file system

Any help will greatly be appreciated. THANKSI think your main HD is always the C : drive. You can't change it. I may be wrong. If you do a clean install of Windows to a brand new HDD it will automatically become C:
In order to do this properly any other drives should be disconnected.
Once the clean install is done you can re-introduce your older drive...if SATA it should be connected to SATA port 3 or 4 on your MBoard so it's no longer seen as a boot device...
You can then SAFELY copy/move any data you need to the new C: drive.

Really all I need is copy the bat files to the startup folder and msconfig.exe recognized with SPEED.

Solve : Unable to install Windows XP?

Answer»

I am using a P4 BASED computer with 256MB RAM. I don't have a UPS and the power supply is sometimes FLUCTUATING. I have Windows XP SP3 CD with latest updates. I tried to reinstall Windows by quick formatting "C" drive with NTFS. When I tried to install, Windows Setup ran fine but uptil it said, "Setup will complete in about 35 minutes" (halfway to "installing devices"), and could not go beyond that. I have other two XP Cds with SP2, both of them also could no go further till it said, "Setup will complete in about 39 minutes". Is the PROBLEM due to the unstable power supply or because of the NTFS format? Please help.Just a few points:

Don't use the Quick Format Option.
NTFS is the correct format for Windows XP
Get more RAM. 256mb is the absolute minimum for Windows XP.

Solve : Lost all of my pictures after back up.?

Answer»

I am running a FOUR year old desktop machine on XP with SP-3. Recently I backed up all of my hard DRIVES onto external hard drives and then reformatted and repartitioned all of my drives. When I went to retrieve my photos, (all JPG format) they were not to be found.. I am totally mystified. I don't think I accidental deleted them, however, who knows. My question is; is there some way to retrieve deleted jpg files? It seems that even the files on the SD Card of my camera are gone. I would appreciate any suggestions any one may have. (Even funny ones)When you backed up your files to external drive, you didn't check, if files were there?
What's the exact situation now?
Any files exist on external drive, or it appears to be empty?BRONI:
I backed up all of the files on C:\ drive to M:\ drive and all of the files on D:\ drive to N:\ drive. M:\ and N:\ being the partion-ed external drive. Later, as I returned the files on N:\ to D:\ I deleted them from N:\, one at a time. Then I did the same with files on M:\, not noticing if the picture files from "my pictures" was among them. Frankly, I don't remember doing those or not. I don't even remember checking "My pictures' after first backing up. Anyway a few days ago I went looking for some pictures on "My pictures" and found only what was loaded from my XP restore CD. So I went back to M:\drive and they were not there either.
The M:\ drive shows that I have left the following:
DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS
NET GEAR (my router)
PROGRAM FILES
SIERRA
TOTAL CMD

What is even more confusing is that I pulled the SD card out of my camera, plugged it into the SD card reader and found it empty also. There should be approx 250 Pict's on it. I must have done something one day and I have absolutely no recall. (I am approaching my 82nd B-day). Anyway, I was wondering if there was a program AVAILABLE, like recuva, that could undelete jpg files. There is one that says it will recall the deleted files from my SD card but they want $40 for that and I am squeezing pennies these days.

So, thank you very much for looking and considering. If you can think of something to try, I will certainly give it a go. Meanwhile I have STOPPED transferring files from M:\ to C:\ so as not to mess up the drive even more.

Thanks again JIM
Surely, it won't hurt to try these freebies: http://www.raymond.cc/blog/archives/2008/01/24/top-10-free-data-recovery-software/BRONI: Thank you, thank you. That did it "PANDA RECOVERY" did the job. YOu guys have come through for me again. Bien Trabajo JIMI'm happy for you

Solve : Graphic processing in game suddenly is slow?

Answer»

When I am in game my computer runs the game slow, the graphic processing is slow and i noticed the screen is unclear (everything is kinda fussy) The SYSTEM requirements are met. This just started happening about a week AGO. The letters in game use to be clear and sharpe, and the colors bright now they r dull colors and fuzzy letters. In game there is a graphic processor and that use to be on high now its mostly halfway (50%) or below. When the graphic processor is 50% or below the above always happens. Any ideas?

So far I have defraged, updated, cleaned out my cache, changed my virtual memory and disabled some start up programs,k changed my memory usage from program files to system cache.

OS: Windows xp Version: Home edition SP: 3 Computer make: Dell, Model: DEMENSION 4600 RAM: 1.75 GB hard drive: 40GB Sound: On board sound, Vid card: ati radeon 9550/x1050, Avasti and sygate fire wall....and no real windows CD.

Dont think that was the answer... but tyWell, have you done Windows updates, and then Driver updates, checked your settings and so on.

Have you played this game before... Is it only in one area, if you load a previous, or post area, does it still lag?
What game is this you're talking about? My psychic powers are failing me today.Try REINSTALLING the drivers.Do you have the latest drivers? maybe its something else but try that first.I am with quaxo what game is this?

Yeah, I love when people offer solutions when they don't even know what game the person is talking about.

Solve : computer won't completely awaken?

Answer»

My dell xp system has developed a new glitch. Overnight, or after a number of idle hours, it won't seem to awaken. I can click on any program and move my mouse around, but after clicking on a program, nothing happens. If I try to restart, it seems to want to respond, but the little hourglass comes up next to my cursor and nothing happens. I have to do a forced, hard, reboot to GET things running, and then all is fine until another LONG period of inactivity. Any ideas?Try doing a chkdsk, go to C:\ right click> Property> select check disk > select both options and reboot. Let us know the result. Can you give some more info on your OS and COMPUTER please. Check disk WORKS a bit DIFFERENT on NT so need to know what you are using. I did the disk check. As you probably know, there are 5 stages: verify files, verify index, security descriptors and usn journal, file data, and free space. All went smoothly with a clean report. I was starting to copy down some data but the screen changed before I could get going. It didn't offer me an actual report of any kind to study. A couple stages took forever, but there were no apparent glitches.

mulreay, what specifically do you want to know? My platform says 2(WindowsNT).Hello Kwyk, are you using any anti-virus, malware programmes at the moment?avg, but it's not new.May be worth downloading/purchasing some anti-virus software... just for interest try this

Solve : DELL Power Edge with Xeon processor 1600 sc?

Answer»

have a chance to pick one up from an auction at verey verey verey low cost to me , has no hard drive, would this make for a good home computer, have no other info on it for it is an online auction from a business foreclosure!
THANKS for any help!
markThis is a bit shall we say 'lacking in infomation'. What are you going to use it for, what are the rest of the properties? RAM, HD, Graphics and well everything??well,as i said i dont know anything other than what i posted, it is being sold @ auction online and this is the only info PROVIDED..as far as my use..just home use internet,music,....It's a mine field mate. Don't buy unless you know what you are getting. If they don't display all the specs then walk away. The last thing you need is to get a 'sold as seen' and then a toaster turns up at your door. Walk away and go to a company that you can atleast walk back in the door to and say 'what the *censored* is this you conned me into buying'. Don't buy unless you know what your getting!! And from what you said your getting a lump of plastic from 1989 that has about as much chance of RUNNING a programme as me beaming up to the enterprise to have a nosey at Troy's living quaters.ok..thanks, this company my wife works for opted to remove the hard drive's as opposed to paying someone to erase them, it was working....i just dont know the specs cause it is a foreclosure/bankrupt auctionIt depends on the money involved... just because it came from a company does not make it the dogs dangly bits. If there are no hard drives with the computers then the extra cost and installing has to be taken into account along with the price of a genuine OS. Don't forget that companies will always opt for the cheapest solution to anything so there computers probably follow SUITE. Can your wife tell you anything of there specs?

Solve : Need to Save Data to an External Harddrive?

Answer»

I have a Dell 1525 Inspiron Laptop and one morning it just wouldn't start up to Windows at all. The tech couldn't do it no matter what, no restore, nothing so he said he'd have to wipe everything clean. But, I can't LOSE some important text files. I bought an external harddrive but since I can't get into Windows I can't load the installation CD or really do anything.
How can I get my laptop info into an external harddrive without getting into windows? Is there any other way to reload without losing files?
ThanksYes. And the Tech should have told you. The method is to gently remove the HDD from the SICK computer and place it into a good computer, as an EXTRA drive. You save the relevant data into a folder on the main drive of the host computer. Later you can move that data back once the sick computer is well again. Programs have to be installed again. The data only needs to be copied.

JohnTry this link.
http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dll-files.shtml?msiRun sfc /scannow from the command prompt.....note the space between sfc and the slash.....Have your XP disk READY to install the files requested by System File Checker.

Seems to work for some and not for others.....

Where do I find the roboform filler
I do not know...I haven't used it before. But I have seen it, it AUTOMATICALLY remembers your passwords you enter in a page...and it LOOKS like it may be getting an error on your computer.Rosey,

Click on Tools , MANAGE Addons, Enable or Disable Addons, See if Roboform or Formfiller are on the list......if so highlight and disable them.

Solve : Black screen with white horizontal lines?

Answer»

For the past few weeks my LAPTOP (Fujitsu) SCREEN has been flashing black with white horizontal lines from time to time. This lasted 2-3 seconds until I hit any key or the mouse and it stopped. Today however , as I was ONLINE it flashed black with the lines and stayed that way for hours despite my trying to re-start , unplugging etc... Then I turn it on TWENTY minutes ago and it's back to normal.
Anyone know what could be wrong?SEE, if same thing happens in Safe Mode.

Solve : Arrrgh! What is wrong here??

Answer»

Ok, whenever I try to download anything and click "save to file" I get a message that my security will not allow me to download it. So I tried turning off Windows Firewall from the control panel which did not work. I tried disconnecting my wireless router, which did not work. I also tried both of the above with the same results. I have never had this problem before. My computer has windows xp. Am I missing something?

Please help.you tried the firewall and the wireless router.......what about temporarily disabling your virus REAL-Time protection....did you try that?

If you are not sure where to find any antivirus settings...........go here: START>RUN>type msconfig>click on the SERVICES tab>then check the box to "disable all microsoft services"....At that point, only third party services will be shown..........then, go down the list and uncheck anything that looks like an antivirus, or antispyware service running.............click "apply" then restart...

Then try the download again....

If the download is successful, reverse the process I just described, to ENABLE your anti-malware services..................Ultimately, you don't want them disabledWhat browser, version?Ok, thanks Hot Dog....I'll try that.

ummm my main Browser is Mozilla 5.0, but I also tried downloading from IE and got the same message. It didn't work, hot dog. Now what?? lol

Are there any third party Software Firewalls installed (besides Windows Firewall) What exactly does the message say when you get the problem?

I'm not familiar with Mozilla, but you might try resetting IE to default settings....When IE is open, click TOOLS>Internete Options>Click Adavanced Tab>Then Reset IE to default. When it is complete, close the browser, re-open it and try downloading againAlso, open Control Panel, look inside "add/remove programs" see if there is any type of registry maintenance/security tools installed (or any other third party maintenance tools)....If so, try uninstalling it/them and restarting..... they may be preventing windows from utilizing the registry during download....

Booting into Safe Mode with Networking might be of some help isolating the problem, if any thing else doesn't work. To do this, Restart, Tap F8, when the advanced boot options appear select Safe Mode with Networking, and then trying downling while in Safe Mode

By the way, how long has this been going on? did it start happening after you installed any updates? If so, try a system restore, to a point when the system was not giving you this problem. But be sure to save any documents to EXTERNAL disk, so you don't LOOSE them.........A System Restore could solve the problem even if updates havent taken place

to do a system restore, do this: Click START>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Restore Follow the instructions and select a DATE to restore the computer to a time when you KNOW the problem didn't exsist

Woot!!! Success!!!!!

I went to my Security Center (Start, settings, control panel, Security Center), then clicked on Internet Options. Then clicked on "reset all zones to default level". And that did the trick.

After the download, I went back and re-set the security setting to high.

Thanks for all the advice. I learned alot today. no prob..

I would have simply suggested resetting the security settings, instead of IE as a WHOLE, but I wanted to make the troubleshoot process speedy, and tackle the entire enchilada.
