Solve : Download Accelerator?

Answer»

Is there a good download accelerator that is Windows 98, IE compatable? I tried the DAP that download.com said was compatable, but it isn't. I have dial up & need all the help with speed I can get. Try these? http://www.snapfiles.com/downloadfind.php?st=download+accelerator&action=s&search=Find+it&lc=1These magic accelerators do not make much difference.Agreed.
How much is DSL/CABLE service in your area ? ?
You're fighting a losing battle...When I was on dial up I tried 'em all. I think I would edit my previous post thus

These magic accelerators do not make much any difference.Quote

I tried the DAP that download.com said was compatable

Also Download Accelerator Plus likes to make a permanent HOME on your HD. It can be harder to remove than malware...

@ 49 M, without basic INTERNET speed you aren't going to find any other solution to downloading faster.

Download Accelerators (i think) were originally meant for very large files. You could stop and start the download if needed, resume it if you were INTERRUPTED etc. They have been exploited just like everything else...EF is correct here...
They didn't so much increase your speed...they just made it easier to resume broken DLoads...I tried Download Express from the link & you guy's are correct. There's no difference that I can tell. I do think the pause feature might come in handy though. I rarely download anything except updates, but I wanted to download & BURN Windows Explorer 6 just in case I need to restore & it's a huge file.

I live out in the country so Cable or DSL is not an option. I keep asking the phone companies, but the answer is always the same. It isn't available.

I've been thinking about buying a new computer to replace this dinasour. I have an old Gateway, Pentium ll, Win 98 and 256 Ram. Would there be any difference in speed sufing the net or will all the extra memory and processor speed on a new computer be wasted with dial up?

Go to DSL Reports website and check for availibility by Zip code....some smaller carriers may have service in your area other than the big phone co's...I think Windows Updates will automatically resume from where they left off. Some of them will anyway I know I've had it happen before. You might wont to check out Hughes net. It is an over the air service and they say that you can down load at 1000 KBS. I don't have them yet. I thought after I get back to work I wold give them a try. It cost about $60.00 a month.

Solve : Loss of e-mail access?

Answer»

I have been blocked from my email account because I forgot my password and cannot remember my secret answer. As a result I am cut off from all my contacts and precious emails.
I am desperate for help and don't know how to contact hotmail.
I am very inept at COMPUTER skills.
PLEASE can someone help me?
I didn't know where to post this, I do hope I am in the right section.
Did you enter an alternate e-mail address when you signed up for your Hotmail account? That's the normal method used to reset a lost password. If not, there isn't anything you can really do to get into your email account.

You can contact their support by clicking "Help Central" at the bottom of the Windows Live login page. Then click "How can I reset my password?". If you didn't enter an alternate email address, the instructions there won't help you, but if you click "Get more help" at the bottom of the page, then click "Get support" you'll be directed to a page where you can contact them with your issue.

Unfortunately, this is the extent of help we can give you with this, and I'm not sure how likely it will be that their support will help you either. It's rare that someone forgets their password AND secret question unless they're suffering from amnesia or just have memory problems in general. Many thanks, Quqxo, I shall try that.
I did spend all Thursday evening going around the help system but your advice guides me a step further on.
I will explain what happened.
I am a woman of 68, an artist, totally non tech. My son (now somewhere on an island off the coast of America) set up my hotmail for me five years ago when I first got my PC. I think I can vaguely remember him asking me what my favourite meal was... but I haven't the foggiest idea what I said and didn't really understand the importance of remembering it. I wish the question had been something unforgetable...LIKE birthplace for instance.
Then, about a month ago I was persuaded, for security reasons, to change my password... and didn't write it down. YES, now I can see the stupidity of that!
Neither did I set up an alternative address, because no-one told me I should.
I had/have no idea how the internet works...just regard it as some esoteric miracle that is a constant wonder and delight ...until now... when just as I was sending an email to a friend it sprang up and demanded questions I couldn't answer... and became a nightmare.
So much of my life is recorded there.
Wish I could be of more help, but contacting their tech support is just about your only option. We typically don't help with lost passwords because it's impossible to tell what cases are genuine and which are people trying to get into things that don't belong to them . I'm not at all saying your case isn't genuine though.

Hope they can get it sorted out for you. Good luck. Thanks,
I have filled in the questionnaire and can do no more than AWAIT their verdict.
I completely understand that the rules are there for our protection, and if ever I get back I shall never be so stupid again.
I will try to let you know what happens. Thank you again.Dear Quaxo,
Joyus news!
I had a lovely mail from a gentleman at ID validation, who HELPED me through the steps for proving my identity and regaining access to my account.
I now have it restored, and am ever grateful to you kind people who assisted me through my panic.
Yours thankfully,
MingThat's great. Glad to hear they were able to get things sorted for you. Feel free to stop by and ask for more advice if ever needed!

Hamachi? The main thing Ham. is used for is online gaming retros...
I used it once and didn't have a PROBLEM uninstalling it. When you installed it, where did you install it to? In there should be an uninstall program, run that.I tried that and it just froze LIKE from uninstalling from Add/Remove programs, another thing I have found is my internet connection works perfectly in safemode where as in normal mode its always a bit dodgy with the wireless, disconnecting sometimes and having slow SPEEDS sometimes. Any ideas on this as well?Quote from: notme on April 13, 2009, 07:02:34 PM

Not from add/remove programs! You need to run the uninsaller that came with hamachi. It should be in the directory where hamachi is installed.add/remove programs would have run the uninstaller...

Answer»

This is the second time my computer has restarted by itself in 2 days, i used my Trend Mirco and Malwarebytes and SEARCHED there are no virus' on my computer, my computer doesnt all of a sudden restarts, FIRST it ends all my programs then it goes about how a computer normally restarts... what on earth is happening to my computer do i have some sort of new virus or SOMETHING? Also how to stop this from happening in the future, a box comes out and it says that my progam is about to end now and everything ends then it restarts whats going on... i hate computersLooks like a virus does the message says "close your applications" something like that and it will have a timer. Is that what the message says?To stop the restarts go to Control Panel/System/Advanced/Startup and Recovery and uncheck auto start on errors...
You will now get BSOD error messages instead of restarts...copy down all the info from the Blue screen including the gibberish and post it here...
This will give us a CLUE as to what's causing the issue.Download Hijackthis and run a scan + save log file. Post that log here, I'd BARGAIN that something will show up.

Do you have the original disk for Windows?

Do you have any Office CDs?Hi,

I think it was already on my computer when i got it.

Thanks for the replyNo i dont.

You will need Office CD's and or the original Restore CD's for the machine from the manufacturer to fix this....
Meanwhile your Word documents should open with Wordpad...Start/Programs/Accessories.

Another option WOULD be to DLoad and install Open Office...MS compatible and FREE.well- what you've done is- as I'm sure you're aware- uninstalled Office/Word. Performing a system restore made your PC think it was INSTALLED- but because the files no longer exist the Installer kicks-in everytime you use a feature from office (there are a lot of shell extensions and such, which is why it appears all the time).

If the PC has a recovery partition or came with a recovery CD, you can back up your documents and data to another drive and run through the recovery process, which will put your PC into a Like-New state.

Either that, or get/borrow the Office CD to allow the install to replace your installation.

EDIT:

Solve : Boot upscreen scrambled - can only log on in safe mode?

Answer»

Hello
Am not sure if i am in the right section. Basicaly i am trying to repair a Fujitsu Siemens Scaleo P PC for a friend. When i enter the F set up utilities everything looks scrambled as in exclamation marks with the odd few legible letters thrown in

I managed to re install the windows xp op system using screenshots from ANOTHER PC but after a week or so it went back to the same thing.
However I am able to log on in SAFE mode

I tried installing ubuntu- The splash screen menu from the disc displayed perfectly from the disc but when i tried to install the screen scrambled again and hung there indefinitely

Could it be the graphics card or bad sector on the hard drive?
Would appreciate any helpto find out if u have a bad sector, try this:
boot from a WinXP SELECT R
once u select R Console and get to the cmd select the Win u want to fix. usually 1.
type chkdsk /r

This is a simple DOS command to see if any sectors r bad. Sometimes it will fix a corrupt sector.
The graphic card will there r some programs that will run graphic test. U can always go to the Fujitsu Siemens site and see if they have any u can download.
u didn't state if the video was a on board MB or a video card (PX, PXe?). A LITTLE more infor would go a long way go help. It's the graphics adapter. No question about it.

if it's integrated- you'll need to buy a card and hope that it will opt to use it over the integrated graphics.

if it's a card- try re-seating it first; then if that doesn't work replace it.

It's not a bad sector. Disk errors would not CAUSE this. Not even close.Quote from: BC_Programmer on March 03, 2010, 06:38:24 AM

Solve : Merging Windows Messenger chat history XML files?

Answer»

Hello All,

I use Windows Messenger chat at home and at work and have enabled the option for saving all the chat text for each contact.

The chat text for each contact is stored in a UNIQUELY identified XML file for each user in the contact list (the name is the same no matter which PC you are on). These are stored in the My Received Files folder under My Documents.

What I NEED to KNOW is: is there a utility or other manual method of merging 2 different XML files for a user into one, so that both lots of content are available?
(these 2 files come from different PC's)

Note: I know little about the use of XML files and have no viewers or other utilities for them.
I'm HOPING MS might have foreseen users would have this requirement.

Thanks!

Solve : installing...?

Answer»

Help mi with the steps to boot to the disk so that i can install Windows XP OS....... When the computer starts, press Delete to enter BIOS Setup.

Set your boot ORDER to CD first.

Reboot with the Windows CD in the CD drive.Sure.
When your computer is first starting up you will see a message that says to press a CERTAIN key to enter set up. It is usually an F key or esc or del. Pay attention as that message may flash very quickly.

This will take you into BIOS. In BIOS you use the arrow keys to navigate. You want to look for "boot order" or "boot sequence" or maybe even just "boot". You want to set your CD drive as the first device in the boot order. You usually use the plus and minus keys to move your devices up and down in the boot order.

Once you have your CD drive set as the first boot device insert your XP CD in the drive. Now exit setup and SAVE changes (F10).

Your computer will then reboot. You may see a message that says: "press any key to boot to CD". Just keep tapping the space bar as it reboots. You should hear the CD start spinning in the drive and see a BLUE screen with the words windows setup near the top.

Once you GET this far, post back and let us know.Quote from: jkolak on March 03, 2010, 12:58:41 AM

When the computer starts, press Delete to enter BIOS Setup.

Set your boot order to CD first.

Reboot with the Windows CD in the CD drive.
The key to enter bios may very well NOT be DEL. As JJ3000 suggested, watch the screen at boot for a message telling you what key(s) to press to enter BIOS (or it may say "setup"- same thing).

Solve : Can't use admin privalages xp sp2?

Answer»

My user account has admin privileges set up, I checked in the user profiles. Though when i'm in itunes i can't set up itunes as the default player for its files because it says i don't have the privileges. Also when i try to install itunes 8.2 it says it can't install ipod helper or initialize it because i don't have admin privileges. I get this problem with many programs such as opera unite ect. I'm running windows XP sp 2. I can install programs but not ones that need to change file type settings or create system programs such as ipod manager by itunes.I'm not sure if this will help but try..

Right click on a music file the type you want itunes to OPEN with. Choose 'open with' then click on 'choose default programme'. Check itunes and there should be a check BOX asking if you want all files of this type to be opened with this programme. Check YES. Hopefully all programmes of the same type will now be opened with itunes. This can work with many DIFFERENT programmes. I'm a Vista user so it may not be word for word.that would help with the music file but it doesn't work with anything like registering system programs or updating to itunes 8.2. i made it more descriptive with and stuff in the topic now.I'm pretty sure this topic is dead but just read a email saying that it was moved. i forgot i even posted here but the solution: get a laptop with windows 7

Solve : where to find comparative software reviews?

Answer»

Can anybody tell me where to find comparative software reviews that would indicate the most secure OS, antivirus, antispyware / antimalware, firewall, clean-up utility, browser, malicious website warning, etc.?Unbios software and technology reviews - CNET Reviews is pretty good:
http://reviews.cnet.com/

Then PriceSpy to find the BEST prices (but thats for New ZEALAND only but might be others like it?):
http://pricespy.co.nz/

Personal opinion - just to check out if you want...
The most secure OS? ummm is DOS counted?
Good antispyware, I would recommend Lavasoft Ad-aware or Spybot.
Best anti-malware, well NOD32 is said to have good detection, but I perfer Kaspersky Internet Security 2010 as it has firewall and other features as well.
Clean-up utility? Advance System Care Pro
Browser? Internet Explorer 6! (jokes, but honestly all browsers have there faults)
Browser reviews - Google for Browser Reviews
Antivirus reviews - Google for Antivirus Reviews
Firewall reviews - Google for Firewall Reviews
AntiSpyware reviews - Google for Aantispyware Reviews
Disk cleanup software reviews - Google for Disk Cleanup Software Reviews
Malicious website warning reviews - Google for Malicious Website Warning Reviews
Operating systems reviews - Google for Operating System Reviews

Be aware that some of the reviews may be written by subscribers who are not totally independent of whoever supplies the software for review i.e. they may be paid to produce the review, that's how they make a buck. If you were paid by Mozilla to do a comparative review of FireFox vs Opera would Opera come out ahead?

When the dust settles it's the user who decides which software to use regardless of any review, if you are happier using Opera than you are using FireFox then Opera is for you.Attention, Azzaboi:

Quote

Unbios software and technology reviews - CNET Reviews is pretty good:

Thanks for replying, but that's not what I want. I don't want to have to find out on my own about a whole bunch of apps, feed in their names, one at a time, to Cnet Review's search engine, get a separate review for each app, and then try to collate the results of these reviews myself to determine which is best for each CATEGORY (antivirus, antimalware, firewall, clean-up, malicious website warning, etc.). I want a competent reviewer to tell me "here are what the top contenders are, and here is the one I / we (or a poll of users) think is best for each category". I've seen such reviews for OSs and browsers, so why not for the categories I've listed above? (And while we’re on the subject of what I want in an ideal world, how about such comparative reviews for all free apps?) But maybe nobody publishes such things.

Attention, Dusty:

Of course I’ve already used search engines. And there are metasearch engines (such as Dogpile) that incorporate Google and other good search engines that I think do a better job than Google alone.

the most secure OS
None. If you mean an OS the is versatile enough to do all of the things people want. Like take a video and serve it on the Web.

You can get a internet appliance the only lets you serf the Internet, but does not pass or receive any information other that just showing a REGULAR web page. But such devices have an OS that you might not think of as a OS. It is all hard wired code that can not be modified. Unless it is in Flash memory.

The way things are going, the day may come when web surfing will become regulated. At least to the extent of standards as to what kind of information can be sent. Any devices that can be updated over the web will be baled an ;unsafe' device. Maybe not by the government, but your insurance company.

Like this. You hose burns down while you were on 30 day vacation. YThe $200,000 home was being monitored by a high tech security company. You had a good PC and the security system tied into the web via your PC and a DSL link. Some kind of Mallarme gets into your PC. Burgles raid you house once they spoof the security system. After stealing everything of value, they set fire to your house to destroy the evidence.
Your insurance company investigates and finds the your PC was not secure. They superman records of the ISP to show that a hostile site forced a download onto the Windows 7. Based on this, they want you to settle for a fraction of the value you lost. And in the FUTURE you can only use a remote security system that is fully certified to specifications given by the major insurance companies.
This is going to be a plot for a new TV show next fall. So I can not give any more details. However, the producer's own PC got infected and the script got published on hack sites. Maybe that I got this story. So the new show may not even go to air. They don't know how to keep the scripts safe before the show airs.
But if you find a great OS that can do video editing and file streaming and is bulletproof, let the people at NBC and let them know what you found.

Solve : HELP - Trying to install XP Pro on off-lease machine that had windows 98?

Answer»

I ORDERED an off-lease machine thinking it would be no big deal to install an operating system. Machine is an IBM ThinkCentre S51, 8171-21U. Getting command prompt when I turn the machine on under Windows 98 wording. I can't seem to get it to boot from my XP cd. Also can't get the light to come on on the cd drive by typing in drive letters. It will READ the floppy drive by typing in letters. I need to get to the BIOS to change the boot order if possible. Or any other suggestions to get this thing to read my XP disc? I've DONE a clean xp install but never ONE over old Windows installation.

Thanks! If you are doing a clean install then you are not installing "over" anything. You are correct that you need to change the boot order in bios so the cd is the first device. Then boot to the XP CD, format the drive, and do the clean install. If you don't know how to get into the bios watch the screen when the system first boots for a message saying "press for bios (or setup)"

or go here:

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/YAST-3JWKJX.html
or here
http://pcsupport.about.com/od/fixtheproblem/a/biosaccess_pc.htm OK, I thought I'd tried F1 to get into the BIOS but apparently I hadn't because it TOOK me right in. Just as a side note, I was able to use F12 during power-on to choose an alternate disc to boot from just one time. Thanks!!You're welcome. If you run into any problems during the installation just post back in this thread.

Solve : four squares and a "file not found message when booting"?

Answer»

I have a windows xp os and when it starts up there are four square boxes and a windows cannot find message. When I click on the ok then I get a message with four squares saying "could not load or run (four boxes) specified in the registry. Make sure the file exists on your computer or remove the reference to it in the registry." If I click ok then it goes away. How can I get rid of this? Someone told me it is a virus, but I have scanned this computer many times with no virus' showing up. I cannot find this file in the registry to delete it. Is this a virus? Any help removing this message would be APPRECIATED. I have looked and looked at the registry files. Thanks for any help, as I'm in over my head it seems.Download and run Mike Lin's Startup Control Panel. Uncheck any startup ITEMS with which you are not familiar (you can always recheck them later). Then reboot. Thanks for your idea with this issue. I downloaded what you said and unchecked every
single item with no luck changing anything at all. Can you tell me if this is a virus? because if I have to live with this I will but don't want to. It was the Time Warner guy who said it was a virus because the wireless internet won't consistently work at a certain location. I think maybe he was just blowing me off because where I'm at right now the wireless works fine. I think maybe that was the only way for him to get off the hook. But if it is a virus I would like to remove it. I appreciate all of your ideas, and if you have any others to get rid of this problem. Thanks! What happens when you boot to safe mode? Not to knock them but in my experience "Time Warner guys " are not to be relied on.....

Disclaimer: This is in no way meant to offend all the other wonderful Time Warner employees and their many affiliates...When I reboot in safe mode it dosent happen because my background picture dosent come up, the SCREEN is just black with my icons on it. The problem always happens right after the picture comes up and I'm ready to go to start. Then it is something loading with the OS. You can do a selective startup with MSCONFIG and disable / re-enable items until the problem occurs.Hi,
days later I have tried the msconfig that you suggested. I actually did find the file and unchecked it. It worked. However then the message pops up that you have changed things and to go back to normal mode, which then PUTS the four squares thing right back. I can't just disable one item, the choice is either disable/enable all of the items or not. I still can't get rid of just this one file. Although at least I know its on the startup part. Any ideas?? I feel like I'm getting closer to making it go away, but I'm still stumped! Thanks for your ideas. That's okay. MSCONFIG is simply a diagnostic tool. Go back to Startup Control Panel and disable the item from there.Allan,
SUCCESS! I have successfully removed the offending file/message. I couldn't have done it without your help. Thank you so much for making this machine fun to use again. Keep up the good work!Happy to help. Glad it's all sorted out

This problem has persisted for a while, and I don't know what caused it or how to fix it. Whenever I scroll over any button on a BROWSER where that small, yellow box with additional TEXT pops up, it closes almost instantly. On top of that, whenever I'm PLAYING any game where on the control setup, you're prompted to press the key you want for a given action, it just goes through them with the computer choosing them all itself. This also happens so fast I don't have the chance to press a single button of my own choosing. Also, whenever I attempt to run IPCONFIG, the window closes itself as soon as it opens. How do I fix this?http://vbnet.mvps.org/index.html?code/subclass/shellnotifyballoontiptimed.htm

As for the command window closing too fast, try opening it from START - RUN - and type cmd (press ENTER)thanks, but the balloons on my desktop all still work fine. It's only when I try to see a text balloon on the internet that this problem occurs. And what should I do about the computer choosing its own response to the button prompts for games?

Solve : Strange lack of email from one provider only?

Answer»

Hi people,
My apologies if this in the wrong area. My problem is this: I teach elderly people how to get on the internet and use email. In the process of doing this we use a government site CALLED "myguide" (www.myguide.gov.uk) as it is a nice easy site to use for a beginner . . One of the FIRST things the students do is to send an email to me or one of the other tutors and to facilitate that we supply our email addresses. Now, if they send an email to my "myguide" address it works perfectly BUT if they send it my Tiscali address I don't get it. It shows as sent on their account and they don't get a "not delivered" email message in their inbox. Points to consider:-
1/. I have NOT blocked "myguide" in my Tiscali account.
2/. All other mail from other PROVIDERS goes to Tiscali with no bother.
3/. I can send mail from Tiscali to myguide with no bother.
4/. I now have to get them to contact other email addresses rather than Tiscali.
5/. And finally, TalkTalk (taken over Tiscali) is about as much use as a catflap in a submarine.

Anyone got any thoughts on this please.

THANKS Graham.Tiscali is blocking it then...
Contact them. Thanks for the speedy reply. You have reinforced my own conclusion that Tiscali is doing the blocking. I give up now as talking to them is a total waste of time. They keep saying that I should check whether I have blocked emails from myguide. I haven't and they can obviously check my account if they don't believe me. I shall just use another email account now.

Thanks again for your help.Do you have an alternative to Tiscali ? ?
I haven't heard much good about them recently...Hi Patio,
I have no wish really to move from Tiscali (or TalkTalk as it is now) as I am on what I think is a pretty good deal. I get Broadband, day and night calls plus line rental for £20 p/mnth. Other than this silly thing with not receiving "myguide" emails Tiscali is fine. It just irritates me that I can't sort it when my students say to me "why doesn't my email go to your Tiscali address?" It makes me look silly and thats not good obviously.

Cheers,

Graham.

Gotcha...
That does seem like a pretty good deal. You could set up a gmail account.I could indeed set up a Gmail account but I already have sufficient email accounts thanks. Lack of available email accounts was not the problem.

Anyway people, thank you all for your help. Lets now REGARD it as something not worth pursuing.

Cheers,

Solve : System will only install in local language (Thai)?

Answer»

Hi,

Installing printerdrivers from original CDrom CANON mp258 yesterday.
Though I have official Windows XP, Dutch language, the setup from the CD comes only in Thai language.
I went to a friend and put the CD in his computer and all was well. His computer was brought from the UK. His second computer bought in Thailand had the same problem as mine.
Is there something in the register that keeps the CD setup from starting up in ANOTHER language than Thai?
It may have to do with a new hard drive I got recently which was installed through a mirror by a Thai repair shop.
Anyone have a clou and did I describe the problem CLEAR enough?
Cheers! Rookie me....
Had to do with the Unicode language setting.
Was indeed caused by the repair shop
Quote from: hugocnx on February 12, 2010, 04:12:33 AM

Had to do with the Unicode language setting.
Can you explain this? I'm trying to understand what the problem was?

Does "Thai" require use of unicode language setting? What setting did you need and where did you set it (Regional and Language Options)?Right. It's the 4th tab in Region and Language - Language for non-Unicode programs.jkolak: Thanks for responding, but I only have three tabs in my "Regional and Language Options" windows (Windows XP Professional SP3): "Regional Options", "Languages", and "Advanced".

What is the name of the fourth tab?

For purposes of investigation, under the "Advanced" tab, I added all of the "Thai" language options I could FIND:
o 10021 (MAC - Thai)
o 20838 (IBM EBCDIC - Thai)
o 874 (ANSI/OEM - Thai)

Still no fourth tab... Not a problem, just a matter of curiosity.Sorry - my apologies. In Vista and 7 the 4th tab is Administrative, and the Language for non-Unicode programs control has moved there.

In XP, it is in the Advanced tab where you made your changes.

To completely set up Thai support (except for the OS language), the things you do are:

1) 2nd tab, Languages, Text Services and Input Languages -> Details lets you add keyboard support. You can buy Thai language key cap stickers off eBay for less than $5.

2) 2nd tab, Languages, Supplemental Language Support installs fonts for Thai.

3) 3rd tab, Advanced -> Languages for non-Unicode Programs

#3 is the kicker. Native Thai software will display garbage if not run with #3 set to Thai. But you have to turn this off if you want to install an international program in English. Nero is an example of this. It will install in Thai unless you set #3 back to English. I think (but am not sure) that proper Unicode programs will install in the language you select in Setup regardless of how #3 is set.Thanks.You're welcome.

I think the great thing about this place is that there are a lot of people with a really lot of knowledge and experience, but regardless of your experience level, there is always something you can contribute.

I often see posts where I don't know the right answer, but I will come back later and see how it was answered. Very interesting forum.

Solve : Forwarded emails and jpegs can't be opened?

Answer»

I am running XP Home. I use Microsoft OUTLOOK for emails.
I have no PROBLEM receiving anything from anyone but when I send jpegs or forward emails, some people have problems with them. Most people don't have any trouble but certain people say that the jpegs come through as a different file they can't open, same if I forward an email to them. What is happening? I know that two of the people I try to send to have Vista, would that be the problem? They TELL me they receive stuff from other people ok.
I'd APPRECIATE any suggestions, THANKS, Gill

Solve : cursor centering?

How can I make my cursor stay where it is when I shut the lid on my dell d600 lpt?It GOES to center now when I shut the lid.XP proWhat does this mean?I searched the manual and cant find a solution.Quote from: Allan on February 13, 2010, 11:38:17 AM

I don't understand what it is you want to do or why you want to do it.I am new to computers maybe It is called the pointer? When working on my laptop I sometimes CLOSE the lid for awhile. When I open it back up the pointer is in the center of the screen ,I would like it if it would stay where I had left it.Why? (and you had it right - cursor - I just thought I misunderstood, but I guess I didn't)

And I don't know of any way to do that.On my work computer it would make life easyier. The computer is in my truck and I open and close the lid many times a day.I have to reposition the cursor to the dialog box?every time I open it the lid. I see. How about this - instead of closing the lid, leave it open. Just set the power options to power down the display and hd after a defined period of inactivity. Then to "awaken", just press any key (space bar would be good because it would not move the cursor) or move the mouse (which would, of COURSE, move the cursor).

Or even better, get a DC car adapter and don't worry about it It is always plugged in to the adapter .I close the lid because it is in the way when driving ,and off road it shakes the screen when its open.Change the power options in Control Panel so that closing the lid does nothing. If it is always plugged into an adaptor, you don't have to worry about running the battery down.

I tried this again it still does it.This is just a minor inconvenience but it bugs me.My friend has the same setup and his doesn't move on lid closure.I checked all the SETTINGS I could think of with both lpt,s side by side, they were the same!Again it is not a big problem ,just thought it would be neat if I could figure it out before the company IT guys did.Maybe when you close the lid you are touching the pad with a fingerIs the FRIDGE light on when you shut the door ? ?

Solve : how to organize folders in order of size?

Answer»

Hi
Can any body tell me how to organize my folders in order of size? When I open my disc drive I can see all my folders, but I cannot organize them in order of size. When I right click, I get 4 OPTIONS: name, size, type, and modified. But when I click on size, nothing happens. A similar THING happens when I LOOK at my disc through Total Commander. Individual archives are sorted by size, but the folders, which contain lots of archives and are all different sizes, are only sorted by name. This is extra annoying because I may want to find the last folder of archives that I downloaded, and I cant just click sort by date, because they are only sorted by name. Or even more annoying when I want to back up my disc, but don't want to back up video folders, which are really big. Therefore it would be great if I could just click sort by size and easily see where they are and remove them. Can any ONE advise me on how to sort this out? Or even suggest some freeware to do it for me?

Recommend you change setting from "Complete memory dump" to either "Kernel memory dump" or "Small memory dump (64 KB)". Both of the later settings should produce a "minidump" which is more manageable (smaller in size).

Look for "C:\Windows\Minidump" subdirectory containing files with names of format "MiniMMDDYY-nn.dmp" (e.g. Mini020610-01.dmp). Also look for "C:\Windows\MEMORY.DMP" (kernel dump).

2. BlueScreenView. This utility from NirSoft may be used to extract relevant INFORMATION from a Windows "minidump" file.

(Most of the following procedures were "stolen" from Broni.)
a. Download BlueScreenView (in Zip file).
b. Extract the executable from the zip file.
c. Double-click BlueScreenView.exe to run the program.
d. When scanning is done, go Edi>Select All.
e. Go File>Save Selected Items, and save the report as BSOD.txt.
f. Open BSOD.txt in Notepad, copy all content, and paste it into your next reply.Quote

I think they're referring to the dialog where you're asked if you wish to report the error to Microsoft. If either a small or kernel memory dump was completed, a "Yes" answer to that dialog will send it to Microsoft's Hang and Crash Dump Analysis warehouse.Quote from: dahlarbear on February 14, 2010, 04:05:28 PM

Solve : XP network?

How many COMPUTERS can be networked on XP Pro?

Using a few year old PC as a file server.
We have a very small business networked with a router and 16 port switch.
With Win2K we had as many as 16 running.
Since we switched to XP Pro sometimes we can get 10 but usually only 9 to NETWORK.

If 9 or 10 is the limit, then what software or hardware should we turn to network 10 to 16?

Thanks for any input. The maximum number of concurrent CONNECTIONS to a Windows XP Professional "shared" resource is "10". This limit may be set "lower" but not "higher".

By design, if you need more, Microsoft expects you to purchase and install one of their "server" operating systems.Linux is freeas PER my experience its highly dependent on number of switch port available.

Solve : how to REALLY change logon screen saver timeout time?

Answer»

I've repeatedly tried to change my logon SCREEN saver timeout time via

Start | Run regedt32 | HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\Desktop\ScreenSaveTimeOut

but although it faithfully stores the number of seconds I want, it keeps actually timing out after 10 minutes no matter what. It wouldn't matter otherwise, but having more than one user accounts necessitates reentering the password for the desired account as if you weren't even already logged in. So how do I make this really work?Hmm why not just do it though the control panel?

Depending on your OS...

Start / Control Panel
Display
Screen Saver Settings
Tick the 'On Resume, display logon screen' and set the screen saver if you wish.
Under the drop down to select the screen saver is a Wait: ?? minutes. It will be enabled now.
Set the wait time, click apply and close.

EDIT:
or did you mean this: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/811329
I might of misread what you are doing. Ensure your the system Admin to make that registry change.

Also you might want to set this value, if you don't want the password protection:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop:
"ScreenSaverIsSecure" = "0" Quote from: Azzaboi on March 02, 2010, 01:01:22 AM

I don't think that applies to the logon screensaver.

I've noticed myself with XP; you can change the screensaver using the control panel, but if you LOG off the screensaver is ALWAYS the windows logo screensaver. It never bothered me enough to EXPLORE how to change it, though. But it's worth exploring, I suppose.

a good guess is the "default" key here-examining HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\Desktop reveals the mystery.

the SCRNSAVE.EXE value here is set to "logon.scr"- this is neither the 3d-flowerbox I have set up in one account nor the space thing (or whatever I used) in the second test account.

changing this entry to "ssmyst.scr" (the mystify your mind screensaver) and the screensavetimeout value to another value worked perfectly- when the PC is logged out of any user, it now uses the mystify your mind screensaver with the new timeout.
reading over the OP again, we find that this method is not working! horrors!

but:

Quote
It wouldn't matter otherwise, but having more than one user accounts necessitates reentering the password for the desired account as if you weren't even already logged in.

Therefore I mention: the key mentioned only changes the screensaver properties while there is no user logged in- that is, while your sitting at the welcome screen or the logon dialog. When you are logged into a user account (I really have no idea how fast user switching would affect this) then it's screensaver settings are in effect- including password.

Try changing the options using the UI as Azzaboi suggests. (if you don't want a password box, for example, untick "On Resume, password protect".

Solve : Xp Repair Instalation Help!?

Answer»

Here we go,
I have a Dell Latitude D620 computer running (not running) Windows Xp Professional, cd: Service Pack 3. So I had some insane viruses take over my computer that I no longer felt like dealing with, so I wanted to just totaly wipe out my drive and reinstall windows. My neighbor had done this once before on my computer when I had blue screen errors by just using the xp boot disk by selecting the drive or something and wiping it clean. I TRIED to do it myself this time but I ended up choosing a repair install, EVEN though I never unistalled windows yet. So now when it tries to boot up (in every mode selectable) it goes to install it again. The problem is, it won't complete the install, stopping at "34 minutes left". Now I can't get to my desktop or any of that, so is there a way to wipe my hard drive and reinstall windows using my boot disk? **

** (even though when I boot from cd, it goes right to the install again?)

help!? New Problem.. I searched the forums and found what I think is the solution to my 34 minute problem (Shift-F10). But now when I boot up, it stopped attempting to install all together and goes to a back screen.

I get: Setup is being restarted. . . . . . . . .

then: the black screen shows up with my curser.

Suggestions to this one?At this point we will assume that your party have a backup of your IMPORTANT data, or else you don't care about losing any data that may be on the hard drive.
You have a good Dell laptop computer that has somehow become damaged by viruses. Or at least you have come to that conclusion. In your post you mentioned that your neighbor help you fix the machine once before.
So now we come to the question as to how old is your computer and does it possibly have any hardware problems.
But any case, at this point, the prudent thing to do would be to just start the installation over again. This time when you get into the installation, try doing something a little different. Try to completely delete the existing partition. Tried to create a smaller. The point of this exercise is to make sure you really did delete the partition and reformat it and not just tried to reuse a partition in its present condition. Yes, there is a reason for that. But just do it. Make sure the partition really has been deleted and you have created a partition a new. And it has to do a full format. No shortcuts.
And by the way, are we to assume this laptop never had a recovery partition? And is the windows XP installation disk on original from the manufacture? If not, it is possible to acquire the windows XP installation disk from Dell. Your laptop as the product key somewhere on the underside of the machine. Also, there is a serial number and a service key somewhere on the machine. If you need ADDITIONAL drivers to complete the installation you can get them off the Dell site.
Also, we assume you read the Microsoft knowledge base article completely and understand what causes the 34 minute problem.
Please come back after you try the installation all over again. Do not try to repair the botched installation.

please excuse grammar mistakes. To give you a quick answer I have used voice recognition software has my typing is even worse than my grammar.

I didn't have my computer running long enough since the blue screen errors, so I didn't have anything I felt needed to be backed up.
I'm not sure just how old the laptop is, my guestimate is about 2 or 3 years now; I acquired it refurbished with OS not installed. The cd is a legit Dell cd from what I can tell, it does however say "Reinstallation CD" if that MAKES a difference. I do not know of any specific hardware problems, but judging by the past blue screen errors it may be a possibility.

The thing is that I cannot seem to get it to reinstall.. I cannot get to this screen anymore, if that's what is required:

Every route I take seems to lead me to the "setup is being restarted...." and black screen after.

The disk also has this on it, if you didn't already identify the one that I have: "The software is already installed on your computer. Use this media only to reinstall the operating system on a Dell Pc."I believe you can get a ligit DELL disk form Amazon and others. The price is a fraction of the price of a generic XP install CD, the retail version. It ONLY works on a Dell system and is near impossible to use on another system.

The Dell INSTALL CD and the Dell RECOVERY CD are NOT the same.
If this is not clear please reply.)

If you can't find it in a Google search, or if you have more questions, please come back here.Okay, so I do not have WinXp then? My cd is this, in blue because it's sp3,

I apologize if i am no longer making any sense, this computer might go right into the 2 feet of snow on my lawn soon. Actually, problem solved. I'm sorry I took your time, but thank you very much. I must've missed something when trying to boot from disk, but it's working now and with the help of youtube I think I got it.

Thanks again, great website and I'm sure I'll be back shortly for some other problem. Glad you got it. Which video on YouTube helped you?

Solve : Computer won't boot up sometimes...?

Answer»

Hi EVERYONE, I'm having a problem with my computer, at times it does not want to start up. The computer will turn on but no image will APPEAR on the screen. If I turn the computer on and off a couple times then it will start working and boot into Windows. If I leave the computer running for a long period of time, the screen will go blank and I will have to hard-reboot the computer a couple times before it will boot back into windows... Any ideas?Do you have another MONITOR that you can try?
Do you have another computer that you can test that monitor on?
When you start it up and there is no image on the screen can you hear the sounds of windows loading?
Also, do the LIGHTS on the keyboard flash?
Does the power LIGHT in the computer tower come on?

Solve : Boot Loop problem on Windows XP?

Answer»

Sorry if i've posted this in the wrong area.
I think my Boot Loop problem was caused by a virus.

Yesterday I started my computer and it gave me an alert saying
It was infected with a virus. Went on the internet for a
moment and after i typed in a search topic i was redirected to
another site. I then tried to restart my computer so I could
go into safe mode and USE AVAST or System restore, as it has
worked a few times in the past. This is when my computer started
to boot loop. I tried to go into safe mode, and all of the other options on
F8 but it just loads for a moment before RESTARTING.

I have the Windows CD
and i was told on a few other sites to use it to repair or restore the computer
or something like that. The thing is i dont now exactly what i should do once i put
the CD in. Will it erase all of my files on my computer if i use it? Will it only get rid of
this Boot Loop or will it erase everything?

Thank You.Repair installation: http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/How-to-repair-Windows-XP-t138.htmlIt didnt work. Afterward it just went back to looping. 1. Disable Auto Restart. Use the <F8> function key during system startup to access the Windows Advanced Options Menu. Tap the key once or twice per second as you startup the computer (or immediately after POST completes and screen flashes black prior to displaying Windows XP logo with its processing bar display).

From the Windows Advanced Options menu, use the up/down arrow KEYS to select the "Disable automatic restart on system failure" and hit .

Hopefully it will stop on a Blue Screen.

2. Blue Screen of Death (BSOD). Report the "exact" STOP code string with its four parameters as well as any short error string and/or software MODULE it might name.Okay. So i disabled the automatic restart and this is the error message i got.

Solve : xp won't load in new system?

Answer» NEW system won't load XP....asks to use f8 to start in advanced bios to disable "caching or shadowing" f8 doesn't work

this is the error message:

any IDEAS...More details PLEASE. You say 'new system'. But is a system you bought from a vendor? Did he install XP for you?
Or maybe you bought parts and made your own? What METHOD are you using to install?
Some motherboards and other stuff are not certified for XP and it will not install. Yes, XP installs on most systems most of the time. But a few are very odd to XP. sorry more info....core 2 quad q9550- gigabyte GA-EP45-DS3L-evga 9800gtx+

first OS load........XP version 2002 home brew system have cd-rom in first positionOK. Best guess is you have a hardware problem.
You had it up and running. Right? Has it never rum for more that 24 hours without a crash? Hardware failures happen in the first few hours, that is why the have to 'burn in'.
A quick test of a system is one of the Linux Live CDs. Like Puppy or maybe a Knopix or Ubuntu Live CD. I use puppy before I try to install Windows on a home brew. It is a fair test of most of the basic hardware, It it don't work, windows won't either! You can Google to find a site that has the ISO file for any of these and just burn it to a CD-R and see if it will boot in your new system. If not, you have some issues!
If it looks like hardware, you may want to move this to the hardware section.no I have not been able to load my OS....

I need to get into advanced BIOS and turn off caching or shadowing according to the error msg...

I am going to clear CMOS and see what happens

Solve : IE8’s Protected Mode vs. PC Tools Firewall?

Answer»

IE8’s Protected MODE can run at low integrity, under which applications can't be launched without the user's permission. Am I right that there’s no point in enabling this, since PC Tools Firewall is already prompting me as to whether I want to allow applications to be launched? Or does IE8’s Protected Mode also offer other protection as well?

Quick answer, use your software firewall (just not the microsoft firewall which is pretty much useless) but keep protected mode if it isn't annoying you for some additional protection.

Protected Mode restricts file writes to low-integrity locations, including cookies. In Internet Explorer 8, medium-integrity applications can access low-integrity cookies without user interaction, by using IEGetProtectedModeCookie and IESetProtectedModeCookie. As always, applications that use cookies downloaded from the Internet should assume that these cookies contain malicious data.

It is a system that basically stops hackers and malware from hijacking the browser.

Disabling Protected Mode may resolve whatever issue you’re having with Internet Explorer, but there is a GOOD chance that it will cause some other issues. The last thing that you want to do is open up your PC for attack from malicious software – so give this matter some serious consideration.

Attention, Allan:

I guess I'm a little confused with what we're talking about. What does application launching have to do with IE's protected mode?Attention, Allan:

1) On my W7 system I use Windows Firewall and have IE8 protected mode OFF

2) Again, I'm confused about what you mean by protected mode preventing applications from being launched without the user's permission. Are you perhaps confusing IE8 protected mode with User Account Control? Or are you talking about remote access?Attention, Allen:

I'm QUOTING a review by someone who apparently was a professional software reviewer. (Sorry, I took notes on what he said but didn't bother to write down the source.) I assumed he was referring to any unauthorized "stow-away" resident applications. The effect of remote applications may be BLOCKED, but I don't see how they could be prevented from launching. Anyway, I'm running XP, which doesn't implement UAC.

I'm now getting the same error message, in English: "Cannot Start Microsoft Office Outlook. Cannot open the Outlook window." I've been using Outlook for years, never had any unrecoverable problems. Upgraded to Windows 7 three weeks ago, everything was working fine until I rebooted as required after an update. After that, Outlook displays the above message and shuts down when OK is clicked.

I would be happy to provide any additional info needed anyone can provide some guidance. I already tried a recent .PST backup, but nothing changed.

Thx

Solve : Backup in Windows XP?

Answer»

How do I cancel/delete SCHEDULED backups in Windows XP? Can't find it anywhere including "Help".Using Windows BACKUP utility? Scheduled backups would either be SET up directly in Windows Backup utility or via Windows Task Scheduler. To find the latter, go to All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, and select Scheduled Tasks. Thanks Soybean, just what I needed.Hello.

This is wierd but this is what you need to do via the following instructions:

START->ALL PROGRAMS->ACCESSORIES->SYSTEM TOOLS->BACKUP

1]When the window OPENS, click the SCHEDULE JOBS tab.
2]Locate the date of the job in the calender.
3]Click the date once to open the SCHEDULED JOB OPTIONS box.
4]Once opened, click the delete option.

VERY IMPORTANT:
Clicking on a blank area of the date will not work. You must click EXACTLY on the ICON within the date; clicking anywhere else, within the date, will not work.

Cheers.

Solve : SpywareBlaster vs. WOT, IE8's SmartScreen, and OpenDNS?

Answer»

Am I correct that WOT, IE8's SmartScreen, and OpenDNS checks the URLS of websites online against their own databases, while SpywareBlaster checks URLs against IE’s resident list of Restricted Sites? And that in addition, SpywareBlaster also changes Windows and browser settings to block bad sites?
Quote

while SpywareBlaster checks URLs against IE’s resident list of Restricted Sites? And that in addition, SpywareBlaster also changes Windows and browser settings to block bad sites?

SpywareBlaster Home Version (FREE) does not check Restricted Sites, IE does that. One of the purposes of SpywareBlaster HV is to update the browser Restricted Sites list when SpywareBlaster HV is updated.

SpywareBlaster HV does not run in the background, it only runs when updating then terminates until the next time the user opens the program file (unless automatic updating is in force).

Here is a quote from the suppliers of SpywareBlaster:
Quote
From Javacool Software :
SpywareBlaster doesn't scan for and clean spyware--it prevents it from being installed in the first place. SpywareBlaster prevents the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, dialers, browser hijackers, and other potentially unwanted programs. It can also block spyware/tracking cookies in IE, MOZILLA FIREFOX, Netscape, and many other browsers, and restrict the actions of spyware/ad/tracking sites. With the built-in Check for Updates feature, you can HELP ensure your protection is up-to-date. SpywareBlaster also includes a System Snapshot feature, which lets you take a snapshot of your computer in its clean state and later revert, undoing many changes made by spyware and browser hijackers.

I really don't care what you do or do not know. While you're here, please just follow instructions and don't do ANYTHING on your own. Do you have Zone Alarm installed?

Not anymore......... I uninstalled it I do have AVG free, HOWEVER it continuously says it needs to be updated according to windows SECURITY center, and AVG says updater needs restart, even after restarting, that is why I had DLed ZA in the first place. COULD ZA caused this the whole time?Well nobody ever responded further, but since removing the ZoneAlarm worked, lol I guess that is why, Thank you everyone who helped.....even Alan who was PRETTY harsh....he he heIt was "even Allan" who solved your problem.
