Solve : Need Windows XP CD ISO?

Answer»

I need to know where i can download a genuine windows xp pro install cd iso image so i can put it on a cd and use it to do a repair install on ONE of my computers. I have a valid windows xp cd key. I would prefer a method through a torrent but i can do a direct download if THATS all i can get. You'll have to contact Microsoft and ASK them. Either that or borrow an XP CD.Quote from: evilcosmo1 on July 16, 2011, 11:19:15 AM

Wouldn't this be illegal?
no it wouldnt be illegal as i have a valid cd keyQuote from: evilcosmo1 on July 16, 2011, 11:58:19 AM

An illegal copy is an illegal copy and it's definitely illegal to share Windows disk images via Torrent (as you download via Torrent you are sharing the completed bits) or to host them on direct download sites. Also you really don't know what's been ADDED in the way of trojans etc.

Yes, it would be less than legal. Hence my POST above.Downloading any Microsoft product via torrents violates that product's EULA. Period. So having the cd key is irrelevant. The only legal way to get an install disk is from Microsoft or if it is an OEM Windows install, from the computer maker.

Oh Ok then i will contact the manufacturer
Time to shut this down...

Solve : How to disable my front headphone jack.?

Answer»

Hello. I seek aid from people with experience. I've tried alot of things and have recieved some help from my friends but nothing have worked. I was searching for solutions to my problem just back n forth on the web and i ended up here and i figured even tho the post i found here didn't help me i might aswell give it a try and see if someone else has any ideas. I'm sorry if i'm doing this wrong or if im simply not using the appropriate methods of posting this but anyway here goes.

Some brief info about my gear:
I'm using a Dell Dimension 9200, os; windows xp media center.
The comp itself is fairly old but is still up and running. My headset is a Icemat Siberia headset. I think my sound card (not sure) is called SigmaTel Audio~

To my problem. I accidentally pulled my headset cable away from my comp with a lil to much force which caused the top half of the metal piece which goes into the headphone jack to snap of and get suck inside my headphone jack. This obviously broke my headset so its not usable in any other comp but I can still plug it in to the same jack and retrieve sound in my right earphone. However the problem EXISTS I either need to get that piece out of there which seems nearly impossible (I have tried probably 10+ DIFFERENT methods.) or I need to disable this jack in order to be able to use the jack on the back of my computer. You see the computer seems to think i still have my headset plugged in quite obviously since the tip of the headset still is there. This causes my jack on the backside of the computer to remain disabled.
I would appreciate any intelligent or just simple ideas of maybe how to get the piece out or if there's a way to disable the front jack so that I'm allowed to use the back one.

Again, I sincerly apologize for any mistakes or inappropriate info for this forum that I've given. But I hope that maybe someone here has an answer which will be of use.

Yours, Jakob.Remove a side panel and disconnect the front header power lead to the headphone jack...the PC won't see it if it has no power.

BTW no apology neccessary...A quick Google reveals this is a surprisingly common problem. Not just plugs - chopsticks sometimes.

If the socket actually has a switch in it which mutes the speakers you will either have to remove the offending object or change the socket, or work out which wires to disconnect or join together to defeat the switch.

I guess you have tried all the usual methods of removing the broken stub of the jack plug.

Fishing it out with a pin or toothpick
Superglueing the other half of the jack that broke off and tying to PULL it out.
Superglueing a toothpick to the lodged in piece and trying to pull it out.
Small pointy tweezers
Bending the tip of a small safety pin and sliding the tip down the side until the shaft of the safety pin is parallel to the wall and the tip is sticking in side of the broken jack and pulling outwards
Inserting a small drill bit with a rotating motion to screw it in the stub and then pulling it CAREFULLY out
Likewise with a very small self tapping screw
Inserting a flathead nail, flathead side first with a dab of superglue, into the socket so it contacts the stub and when the glue has dried, pull nail and stub out
Make a paper tube and insert into the socket and then poke in a toothpick with superglue on the tip and stick it to the stub. the paper stops the toothpick sticking to the inside of the socket

Generally superglue glue will dry in 2 to 3 seconds, full strength is achieved in 12 hours, and it continues to dry for 48 hours, so don't be too impatient.

If the headphone detection is done in software (You may be able to tell this if the Windows startup sounds come through the speakers even when the headphone socket has a plug in it)
(This works on Dimension 8400 which also uses Audigy) download Creative Audigy Control Panel, unzip to a folder, run ctpanel.exe and go to "Device settings", and uncheck “Mute speakers upon Headphone Jack Detection.”

http://www.geekymedia.com/media/audigy_ctpanel.zip

Chopsticks...i like that one... Just to add that I removed a broken off jack pin once by soldering a wire to the end of the broken pin and then when solder cooled in about 3 seconds , I was able to tug it out with no problems. This was for a user with a laptop in which the dog got caught up in the headphones and snapped it right off. I was truely amazed that that jack didnt get ripped out of the motherboard and functioned after the jack pin was removed.Quote from: DaveLembke on July 16, 2011, 12:13:25 AM

IMO, from the info tillan posted, I doubt there is enough of the broken contact to solder to:

Quote from: tillan
(However the problem exists I either need to get that piece out of there which seems nearly impossible (I have tried probably 10+ different methods.)

The only immediate solution is what patio posted - disconnect the jack from the Mboard.

tillan_, if you can physically remove the jack assembly from the case, then the jack assembly may be servicable (I mean the jack may be designed to come apart via unscrewing the assembly.)
This may give you better access to the area where the broken contact is, therefore being able to get it out with tweezers ect.
Maybe not? Just trying to help.

Another possible physical method that MAY produce the desired result of removing the piece of the jack in the port is by taking a vacuum cleaner modifying the nozzle to a sufficiently small enough diameter to fit as tight as possible over the port and suck er out. I have a set of vacuum modifying attachments designed for altering the normal heads to extremely small heads for computer work. I am sure one of them would just about be the right size to slip over the port. Whether sufficient SUCKING force would be adequate to draw out the piece i don't know. Sorry but i am not about to break off a mini plug in a port to find out. You could probably (with ingenuity) do your own modification to a vacuum cleaner to make your own for this instance. If you do try this method let us know the result.Good luck, truenorth

ThanksThere is a FILE called boot.ini which gives option for dual boot ETC, so your system thinks it has 2 copies of XP on it. Run the system recovery software again and be sure it picks C: as the destination for the install. When done if it still wants to go to D: edit boot.ini to make C: the first option or remove the D: option if you dont want ability to boot off of D: if your system ever gets messed up as a next available preloaded os.The OP did not say what computer he has.

Solve : Geez! Lost correct colors in Windows XP?

Hi! I somehow lost my correct colors to EVERYTHING.

For example: Excel font colors SHOW blue when I click red, my desk top ALARM clock has turned bright blue when it's always been Yellow.

And the WORST part is that I spend a great deal of time doing artistic work using Paint.Net and all my HEX #'s are wrong. It's not possible to get orange on it either.

Anyone have any idea of a support or something that can restore my colors?

This is so bizarre! Thanks, Pennie SWAP in another monitor...still the same ? ?

Solve : driver store location issues?

Answer»

System: XP PRO SP3

I am having a weird XP issue where the driver for a printer is in the "C:\WINDOWS\system32\DRVSTORE" location, shows up in the driver list when manually searching but, I can not get a script to install the printer.

If I manually install the printer (using the driver from the list) it works. If I then remove the printer and run the script again. It will add the printers correctly. But, I am trying to automate the install process for over 100 computers.

thanks,
wbrost

100 printers for a hundred computers??? I doubt you would be printing 100 pages simultaneously...

http://uis.georgetown.edu/software/documentation/winxp/winxp.network.printer.html
maybe a networked printer is what you need-I think setting 10 printers on a few master pcs, then enabling all the client PCs via the network is WAY more cost-effective...

This is how to convert a standard printer into a network printer-http://www.ehow.com/how_5825303_convert-usb-printer-network-printer.htmlTry this link for mapping or redirecting printer file -> http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/event-id-1111-terminal-services-printer-redirection.aspxok I guess I did not make my request very clear.......

The print servers are being taken away and we have been told not to make cilent/desktop print servers (yes this is stupid and I agree it is a mistake). The solution to this is to add all printers (around 10 of them) via IP. I have a script that works with win 7 but not with XP. I am asking if any one knows the location that windows puts the print drivers after they are INSTALLED on the system or a way to add the drivers to the PNP list so I can utilize the drivers.

thank you,
wbrostIs this what you need?

C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers

Moved the files for the driver to the below location and still getting error. I checked and the driver shows up twice in the PNP list now.

$objNewPrinter.Shared = $false
$objNewPrinter.Location = "Rhyne_290A"

If I check the PNP list from add printer the driver is there but the script errors stating the above. If I install the printer manually the powershell script runs correctly. This error (from what I can tell) is stating the driver could not be located. I am just trying to figure out where windows XP is putting the drivers and relevant files when you install the printer. When you run it manually it works....how ELSE are you trying to run it? Are you trying to run it across a network?

To get the script to run I need to manually install one of each model printer. once the drivers are in the system ( location I am trying to figure out) the script runs correctly. with windows 7 I am using the pnputil to inject the drivers but that does not work with win xp (not installed and could not find a 32bit xp VERSION).

I am not running it across the network. I copy the script locally and run from there.

Solve : I need computer help...PLEASE!!!?

Answer»

I was trying to save some space on my PC, so I moved things over to an external HD, Apparently I moved too many things. Now, I can't use my computer. I have my background picture and every few minutes the icons come up, they only stay for about 10 seconds and then they are gone again. I was fast enough to get to the system restore, but it says that it can't protect my PC. I tried to defrag but that wouldn't work either..Please tell me that this is fixable and that my wife will still love me for screwing up her computer. I need your help!!!!!It might help if you told us exactly what you moved.Well, that's part of the problem. I can't remember everything I moved. it was almost a week agoGo To Your External, Find Out The Date Your Files Were Modified .( It Would Help If You Know The Exact Date, Or Closest). GROUP Those Files Together And See Exactly What You Moved. Sorry, you're sleeping on the couch.unhooking the H drive might have to wait until tomorrow. once I group everything together, should I catch the icon fast enough and try to transfer it back to the C drive?Commando, you're killin me here...LOL...I'm a Firefighter not a computer whizQuote from: Chuck112 on July 28, 2011, 05:50:22 PM

We already know that. That's why you're here.
You are now a computer firefighter.

Can you look at the external HD to see what you moved? If you moved instead of copied, you might have deleted your personal profiles, which is what the symptoms tend to INDICATE. It MAY not be too serious, if it worked for a week.

AS a last resort. the computer can be fixed, but you might not like what you have to do: Reinstall Windows.
You will lose everything on the computer, & it will be return to the state when you bought it.
What is the make & model of the computer?
a dell dimension 2400...I know..kinda old. But still works well...at least it used toSince you're not able to give any information on what you moved, this would be only a guess: HTTP://support.microsoft.com/kb/811151move back everything if u hav t/space

Solve : Windows Xp Fails to Boot?

Answer»

Hi everyone,

I was using my main pc, an Acer aspire m1100, with windows XP sp2.
I tried installing windows 7 on a second partition -big mistake.

Hers' a link to the specs:
http://support.acer.com/acerpanam/desktop/0000/Acer/AspireM1100/AspireM1100sp2.shtml

After successfully installing windows 7 on a second partition, my pc would hang on a screen that said: verifying DMI pool data. So I REMOVED the hhd and placed it into an older pc. This pc had no problem booting the xp partition. I reformatted the the w7 partition and even deleted it, but when I placed the hdd back into my main pc the same hanging occured. So I put it back into the old one, and used the Windows 7 installation cd in conjunction with cmnd prompt to uninstall w7. I placed it back into my main pc and this seemed to work. I was able to get passed the dmi data pool screen. But now it crashes consistently while XP is booting.

I am able to get into safe mode, and after CHECKING the event log I FOUND 5 errors will consistently occur when booting:

1)The DHCP Client service depends on the netbios over tcpip service which failed to START because of the following error: A device attached to the system is not functioning.

2)The DNS Clinet serive depends on the TCP/IP prtotocol Driver Service which failed to start because of the following error: A device attached to the system is not functioning.

3)The TCP/IP NetBios helper service depends on the AFD service whic failed to start beacause of the start because of the following error: A device attached to the system is not functioning.

4)The IPSEC Services service depends on the Ipsec driver service which failed to start because of the following error: A device attached to the system is not functioning.

5)The following boot-start or system start drivers failed to load:
AAvmker
AFD
aswRdr
aswSnx
aswSP
aswtdi
ELRAWDisk
Fips
IPsec
MRxSmb
NetBIOS
NetBT
Processor
RasAcd
Rdbss
Tcpip

My thoughts are that it seems to be hardware issue... I want to try to disable all the devices, and see if it will boot into windows normally. Unfortunately, I really don't know which devices I can disable safely. In device manager, I have disabled what I figured would not cause an issue: all the card readers, dvd drive, floppy disk controller, all the network adapters, all the communication ports, and all the sound video and game controllers. I also disabled lan in BIOS. No such luck, still crashes.

Any help would be so ubber appreciated, Thank you.See this thread -> http://www.techspot.com/vb/topic59745.htmlI would start up in safe mode first. Then right click on My computer under the start button and choose proerties. Then go to hardware and click on device manager. Check to make sure that things like the processor or the graphics card (under display adapters) are enabled. Also check that the disk drives and all system devices are enabled. I suppose you COULD also try to check your hard drive for errors with Ubuntu or Lucid Puppy.Ignore the above post

Solve : Keyboard doesn't work. Not even to config BIOS?

Answer»

A few hours ago I turned on my computer and upon trying to type my password found that my keyboard wasn't working. I restarted then tried USING a USB keyboard, which also didn't work. This confused me since my USB mouse was working just fine. Next I decided to check the boot SEQUENCE on the BIOS, but after hitting f2 all the keyboards' lights went out and they stopped working again.

Any ideas what happened or how I could fix this? I forgot that you need to log in to load your system. Since both USB and PS/2 port are not working for your keyboard, I think the only way is to change your CMOS battery to reset your BIOS default configuration and hopefully it was just there that your problem lies. Other than that, maybe you could just use another power supply(same or greater wattage) to check for any power issues. It seems the problem has fixed itself. I turned on the computer and to my surprise I was able to type my password
Will this happen again? Should I take any precautions? There is always the possibility since it made that certain behavior as it may be more of a hardware issue or faulty. Check your connector pins for those certain devices on the tower. But its always better to hear that you are now running up and well. Check on my 4th reply as it would be viable to making good troubleshooting tips pertaining to your keyboard/mouse issues. Quote from: bob09 on July 18, 2011, 11:33:20 PM

It might. Though the problem should be fixed since you plug it. Anyway if you meet this problem again, just reset the CMOS battery and everything should be back as normal.Check the CMOS battery or just buy a new one for $4.

Just WANTED to make sure it wasn't a spoof site...thanx.Remember how I said I reinstalled windows? The point of me saying that is I have a feeling if I try to install MSE it will lead to problems, and my laptop is already being fixed now to boot....
Any other suggestions for a AV?First of all, your system is probably infected. Second, are you saying that the current OS installation is not legit? If that's the case you need to correct that immediately.Quote

Solve : PC keeps dropping the internet?

Answer»

My wife's PC drops its internet connection after an hour or two have passed. There are no warnings or windows to give any hint of why this is HAPPENING. The internet is restored upon rebooting.

I recently went through a reinstall of Windows XP (sp3) on this system. This desktop computer is wireless and linked to my PC which is CONNECTED via FIOS to the web.

She is using a Linksys Wireless G PCI adapter which indicates that the signal is very strong, whether connected to the internet or not.

Could anyone give me some instructions as to how to track down this problem?

Details: AMD Athlon 64 3500 2200 MHZ , 2x nVidia 7800 GTX video, 2048 meg memory, ASUS A8N-SLI mb Most likely problem is hardware. PCI wireless adapters are now at a low prince. Or even a USB adapter

You have a strong signal, oi could use a USB adapter. That would be a quick way to find out. When you have two adapters in a PC, one should be disabled.

You can pick up a suitable adapter for under $26. You don't need to pay more. The extra features are not needed for internet aces with strong signal. Just get one of the economical ones. That should solve the problem.A free suggestion would be to check for any 3rd party firewall installed and POSTING other protection softwares running on the PC.

I am not cleared up on that. Where the desktop with wireless adapter should be directly accessing the FIOS modem/router.?All I know is that the wireless router receives a signal from the router on my main PC, which is wired.

Geek - so you are saying that I should buy a USB wireless router, take out the PCI card and put this router into a USB port?Maybe we a re getting lost on terminology.
A router is often a stand-alone device that is between any PC and the modem.
The PC is called the client. And any adapters that physical plug into, or are part of the PC are part of the client hardware. We don't call them routers.
However, you are using Verizon FIOS, and we a re not sure of how it shares the connection with multiple PCs In other words, the topography of you system may be the reason the connection is not reliable. But without knowing, we are guessing. Here is a simple diagram of what we might assume:
Code: [Select]Internet via Verizon
|
FIOS device(modem) -->>wireless router -->>PC via direct wire
|---->>Laptop via internal wireless
|---->>Desktop via wireless PCI
Does that come close?
I was thinking the PCI device in the desktop has gone bad. But I was making then assumption your layout was like the above. It's like this:

FIOS Internet
|
V
FIOS Modem
|
V
Desktop direct wire PC
|
V
Desktop via wireless PCI

This system never had a connection problem prior to my REINSTALLING Windows XP two weeks ago.You are using a combo wireless router/modem which the desktop with wireless adapter is connecting. And so the other desktop is wired to the combo router. Since there is connection established on the wireless desktop and suddenly drops, the first thing to look here is distance and inteference. Distance - Consider moving first atleast in one room the wireless Desktop to confirm the problem.
Interference - Isolate the Desktop from any type of electronic appliances. Radio signal, Cordless phone, Microwave oven.
Consider using/reading the manual that came with your router in any case that your connection is not secured. Also, please provide all protection softwares installed such as firewall, antivirus, spyware, scanners.Quote

If you don't have one you might BUY another one (go see a friend that has one could be a solution)

Solve : changing back to IE7 from a new IE8?

Answer»

Since I'm a IE hater to my bone and blood. I WANTED to share other solutions that works. The problem to this thread from the OP that he mentionned was when upgrading to IE8 it was slower. A solution to this is to use another type of browser. Theres Opera, CHROME and Firefox.

I like Firefox for 1 SIMPLE reason EXCEPT that it's fast. It has a load of extention. So my solution to this would be install Firefox. Install a Internet explorer extention viewer (it allows you to switch engine to an IE ) that allows you to view pages in IE and becomes fully compatible. You could also install some IE theme in firefox so that it looks like IE itself.

You could say why use Firefox when it could look like IE. Firefox contains extentions and a lots of them to increase security and other stuff that will be useful to every day user.

ps: this ain't hijacking a thread in case you wonder cause the OP mentionned is IE8 was getting slow... Firefox could be a solution to this problem.Replying to a thread thats 2 years old could also be a problemArmecia you should start a new TOPIC so it can recieve the proper attention...

Solve : Not a valid Windows Image?

Answer»

I am trying to download a GAME from nexon.net and i get the downloader installed and a message pops up and says "The application or DLL C:\Program Files\Pando Networks\Media Booster\nspr4.dll is not a valid Windows IMAGE. Please check this against your installation diskette." so if someone could tell me how to get rid of this message it would be very helpful.Have you tried UNINSTALLING and reinstalling all over again? My wife had a Pando product related issue a few months back as well and uninstalling and reinstalling corrected this on her system. This error usually means a program is looking for this ddl in your system somewhere else (like if its in the PATH folder like system32 or something). Because of that, it creates an error. You'll have to dig a bit to find out about it.

Another good thing is to make sure you don't run ANYTHING when you try to install that downloader. CTRL + ALT + DEL and go to process and applications and remove anything unwanted. If your not sure then don't do it cause you might mess Windows up but if you feel like messing with it, go ahead. But I warned you.

No, leave them

How do you know what is safe to remove.

Research, google is your friend. You can delete windows security update files beginning with $. Files are located in C:\WindowsHere's the rule of thumb on security updates:::

The $NTUninstaller$ files come with every Windows update...
They can ADD up to a good amount of space...but can also be gotten rid of...they are neccessary to remove a wonked update however so shouldn't be just WEED whacked outta the system though just in case.
For EXAMPLE there was a Vista Update for instance that wonked connectivity on certain branded machines...therefore also shut down updates...the uninstaller NEEDED to be present to run the fix MS provided. So for those that erased the uninstaller the patch wouldn't run and it added up to more work to fix...

So my method which you can choose to use...or not is after updates if everything is running fine you can safely delete the $NTUninstaller$ for those updates...i usually wait approx 2 weeks just in case.

Any of those that are 6 months old or older go ahead and get rid of.

I've also HEARD some folks burn them to CD just in case but i think that's pretty much ridiculous.

Hope this clarifies things...Thanks everyone for your replies - very helpful and appreciated.

Solve : .NET Framework 4 Glitch. Please Help?

Answer»

I am using an Acer Apire One Zg5. I am running Windows XP Media Center Edition with Service Package 2. I could not seem to upgrade to Service Package 3. So the other day I tried to run a program and it gave me some error message that I needed .NET FRAMEWORK 4. So I downloaded it and the program that I needed to use worked fine. I later restarted my computer and all it showed was my computers background and a message that said "Setting up PERSONALIZED SETTINGS for: C:\directory\CyberGate\install\winlogin.exe." I can not seem to get around this. While pressing buttons on my KEYBOARD, I accidentally locked my trackpad, and I do not know how to unlock it.
brennan1654,
Apparently sou have have this laptop for some time. Did you ever make backups?

Be advised that all installations of .NET are for XP service pack 3, with few, if any, excretions. Service Pack 3 is required.

As to the problem at hand, try booting in safe mode and log in as the administrator. The password may be blank. If you can, try the system restore feature (rollback) of Windows XP.

As a almost last resort, get the XP install CD that came with the machine and see if it has the repair feature NORMALLY found on XP install disks.

If none of this works, don't give up. There are more options before doing a full install. Check back here.

Solve : Opera help: Where do I locate Browser JavaScript setting?

Answer»

Just before you exit the stage left. As was noted by soybean in a previous post on your thread i had referred to a "nonexistent" version of Opera. It occurred to me after that even though memory is spiraling downward on me i was absolutely certain i had upgraded something on Opera within the past 2 weeks as a result of a notification from them. It was on the very same day i received a notification from Avira (my associated anti virus program ) that they were issuing a a new upgrade on it. The Avira upgrade is irrelevant to your issue but it was what reminded me that THERE had been a very recent advisory from Opera on some update. Compare your build edition with mine as stated above. Of course it is absolutely your choice to use whatever browser you like the most or seems to serve your needs the best. But i am a great fan of Opera and though it is a bit different than others i believe it is worth learning and has many fine usable features. So i hate to see you give up on it. On another computer i am just trying out "Sea Monkey" (also a Mozilla browser) but too early to fairly venture any comments. truenorth
Thank you truenorth. I think of Opera most every day when IE or FF is slow. I don't understand why they are slow one day and fast the next, not as bad as Opera was for me. . I keep them clean, cache,, etc.Ran CCleaner and swept the C drive empty space 3 times. I am thinking today to try an OLDER Opera than the one just 2 below 11.50. I think I need to do more cleaning for 11.50 to run satisfactorily on my machine. When 11.50 is a little older I want to try it again. I think there are some bugs in it that will be fixed as did Mozilla with FF ver. 4. Does Opera have the password save feature that FF has. It saves the ID's and passwords and when I need them I just type the first letter of ID and it fills in the ID and password. It has a tab layer feature that looks good for me, too.In response to your question"Does Opera have the password save feature" I am including this link as not only does it answer that specific
question but many others as well. Your concern seems to be based in the Opera browser being too slow (but it seems that is also a problem with your other browsers as well). Are other elements of your computer usage also slow? Such as programs you use. There are many things that can cause a computer to be slow. Some within the computer some external such as your ISP connection mode and speed.Internal things can be the number of processes running. Insufficient amount of RAM. Badly fragmented harddrive. A harddrive that is chock a block and needs either more HDD space or an additional or greater capacity HDD. The causes are by no MEANS limited to only the examples i have given. Is this a relatively new phenomenon (the slowness)? Can you relate to an event or circumstance where you "suddenly" noted the appearance of this slowness?

http://www.opera.com/browser/tutorials/intro/speed/
truenorthThank you for the link. I have 2.5 GB RAM, high speed DSL ISP, in fact Opera stated I did not need TURBO. I also have 22% free disk space. I use IObit Game Booster most of the tome as i USUALLY am on Webkinz and or related sites. I keep it clean. Yesterday I just did a free space sweep on C drive. Most All my drives are old, 2001 even though my machine is 2005. I have a Dell Dimension 4700 with Windows XP SP3. It is set to auto update. My next step is to update the drives but I have many questions about that. I found Softpedia has a good selection of drivers but i don't know if that is the best free driver site. I will need to commit to a day or 2 to tackle the driver updates. I contacted Dell last fall thinking I was getting updated drivers but they actually were the same old drivers that were already on the machine. There are some drivers that need to be removed before start updating from my earlier attempts to update using DriverMax. Two days ago suddenly during a reboot Genesis by Dell appeared on my screen. This put me on the trail once again to find newer drives. I printed out the list of outdated drives which look like most of them, hardware drives. I am also having some graphics issues that have bothered me for a few months now, like the heavy trailing of one window when dragged across another.
The problem with Opera on my machine is that it was not consistent. At times a site would load properly then the nest time it loaded incorrectly. Each time I would try to use one it just was not consistently loading correctly along with other quirky problems. I have Avast and do run Malwarebyte regularly. I regularly run TweakNow PowerPack 2011 SP2 and they are all updated with each use. I have a really good machine that just needs some updating. I reinstalled the OS last fall. Which caused some major problems. It took me a while to get it back to where I wanted it and it still is not performing as it did. You can read about that in some of my earlier posts. Thank you for your help and concern. I can tackle only one thing at a time and I am now not ready to work on it for a little while.A very comprehensive report on your computer and your evolution re it's use. You seem to realize some of the areas that you can devote some time to to possibly improve the performance and intend to get to them when time constraints permit. That is good. From your last post i would comment on 2 parts "22% free disk space"-- that is getting to a pretty low proportion and in itself can be a factor of the computers sluggishness. "tackle only one thing at a time" When you do get around to doing things this is a good way to go. By doing only one thing at a time (be it driver updates or hardware changes) as you can monitor the result of the immediate change of the "one" thing rather than have a problem arise and because many things were done together NOT know what caused the adversity. I don't know what your max ram for your computer is. Either the specs of it or a "Crucial " scan will tell you that. But it is generally believed that where speed is an issue RAM returns the best bang for the buck. DSL should give you the ISP speed you need unless it is erratic. You might want to consider (where possible ) changing your updates from "automatic" to custom (where you determine which and when you install). I find that today there are so many sources of program updates that are CONSTANTLY playing touchy feely with one's computer that instituting some control on that can reduce the intrusions on computer performance (particularly on older computers). Good luck, truenorth

Solve : pagefile.sys?

Answer»

On start-up, my computer tells me, "Your system has no pagefile.sys or the file is corrupt." Then later, while running, I get additional error messages like, "The file or FOLDER pagefile.sys is corrupt."
By changing the defaults and viewing hidden or system files, I can find my pagefile.sys file. I'm pretty SURE I could delete it, but I'm not sure I want to. Where can I get a pagefile.sys file that is NOT corrupt?
Please do the following:

Open Control Panel and open the SYSTEM applet - click on the Advanced tab - Click on the Performance Settings button - click on the Advanced Tab - where it says Virtual Memory click on CHANGE - Select NO PAGING FILE - click SET - Click OKAY to get out.

Reboot

The system will load slowly - don't worry about it.

Defrag the drive

Then go back to the Virtual Memory setting as per above and set it to SYSTEM MANAGED

Reboot

Let's see if that HELPS.
Thanks for the help. Sorry... that didn't work. I still get the same eror message.
What is new or different since the last TIME everything worked properly (ie, new hw, new sw, virus, error, etc)?

Solve : Strange issue has started to occur?

Answer»

Almost at random I am locked out of all programs. When I say locked out I mean: I lose internet access (Even though I'm still sending and receiving packets), can't open or close programs (task manager excluded), if I attempt to ctrl-del and end the program through the process the task manager stops responding. Now this doesn't happen all the time, sometimes I'll have the PC on all day and it won't happen once. This issue actually started to happen before my clean install which is why I think it might be hardware related. It didn't start to happen until a few days ago and I reinstalled my OS about a MONTH ago.

Windows xp sp3
Asus m2n-e motherboard (not sli)
4 gigs of ram
Ati HD 5670 1 gig

Currently running Comodo firewall and avast! antivirusHi, good day!

In order for someone to help you diagnose your problem, they are GOING to need as much information about it.

What hard drive do you have? How big is the hard drive? How many free space do you have in your hard drive?
Did you add any new hardware to the system? If so, what?
Did you install any software? If so, what?
What programs do you have running? What programs and/or services start up automatically?

Please try to be as exact as you can be.Harddrive is a Seagate 120 gig I've had it since I built the pc (so 2-3 years not sure). 12.4 gigs of free space.
Newest hardware would be my cpu 970 be. But that was months ago.

No real new software: steam, SKYPE, firefox, foobar2000, nvidia control panel (allows me to change my cpu multiplier if I don't want it running at full all the time), video drivers (Catalyst control center), soundmax headphone drivers, Speedfan, my antivirus & firewall, games from steam, coretemp, setpoint (mouse drivers), and winrar. That's about all I have on this PC.

Startup is just foobar, skype, setpoint, catalyst, avast! & comodo.

What I have running most of the time: anything in the startup section + steam.
I was always under the impression that you should always have more than 10% free space on the drive. You are on the limit. This could be the problem.

Can you do a back up or transfer files to another PC and see if the problem persists.I'll try that thanks.
Just an update it happened 3 times in a row just a few minutes ago. I was just writing out my previous post and it happened. The only programs that would start are the smaller ones like media player classic and foobar still worked and played songs fine. Each time I restarted my PC the problem was there as It was loading all my startup programs. So I left it off for 10 minutes then started it back up and no problems so far.Have you done a disk clean up? Start> accessories>disk clean up. With only 10% free space you probably won't be able to do a defrag.Like I said pretty recent reformat so not sure if defrag or disk cleaner will help much. But I'll do them both and I'm at 23% free space now so we'll see if that does anything.Okay, you now have 23% free space. Kindly observe your PC if issue will still occur. Quote

Currently running Comodo firewall and avast! antivirus
I would think that you are using Comodo Firewall + Antivirus together with Avast. Double check on what type of package you have installed. You cannot run two antivirus or real time protection features as that would make your PC stall.

Maybe, but not neseccarily, thats what i run, Comodo firewall and Avast Anti-virus. Worth clearing though. It seems to happen at startup now instead of at a random time afterwards.
I'm using just the comodo firewall and the avast! free antivirus.
It happened again once today at startup so far.
I used disk cleaner, defrag, and gained a bit in harddrive space up to 27%.Quote from: Bob_Smith on July 19, 2011, 07:17:43 AM
It seems to happen at startup now instead of at a random time afterwards.

Does it happen after you did the suggested initial solutions like disk cleanup, defragmenting, etc?

Try Safe Mode, and just observe.
  • Restart your computer
  • Tap the F8 key. Windows Advanced Boot Options MENU appears.
  • Ensure that the Safe mode option is selected, not Repair Your Computer.
  • Press Enter. Your computer begins to start in Safe mode.
  • When you are finished with TROUBLESHOOTING and observation, close all programs and restart the computer as you normally would.
I would run a diagnostic test on your Hard drive. Also check on your Hardware temp. and look for anything that goes near or over maximum. You could also try using one or a couple of Memory modules for other testing options. For any software related, I would try removing Comodo and use Windows firewall since you mentioned loosing internet connection. Look for other remnants of pre installed protection software still residing on the HD.Hi,

After you did all the suggestions, try to run Disk Error Checking. It is a procedure that displays the file system integrity status of hard disks and can fix logical file system errors.

  • Double-click My Computer, and then right-click the hard disk that you want to check.
  • Click Properties, and then go to Tools tab.
  • Under Error-checking, click Check Now.
  • A dialog box that shows the Check disk options is displayed.
    • To run Check Disk in read-only mode, click Start.
    • To repair errors without scanning the volume for bad sectors, select the Automatically fix file system errors check box, and then click Start.
    • To repair errors, locate bad sectors, and recover readable information, select the Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors check box, and then click Start.
    • Click Yes to schedule the disk check, and then restart your computer to start the disk check.
    • Once the server is in the process of rebooting, do not skip Disk Checking.
I ran the disk error checking no change.
I did remove comodo firewall today and I didn't have this issue for the first time in 4 days. Started up no problem on the first try.
It could just be a fluke so I'll test it a few more times and get back to you.

Solve : Problem with new antivirus software!?

Answer»

Add 3 very's to that..... In fact, if I may be so bold to say so, it really only exists in theory.Thank You.I think the only confirmed BIOS infections were controlled. Just to prove it can be done.

This may be the best response I have ever seen to the mythical BIOS virus. ( please excuse my made up names )

Quote

-Conspiracy theorist says-

jboy, a virus can get into the bios a lot easier than you think. if you do not disable write to bios either by jumper or in the bios, a virus or wrong bios autoupdate can get in & screw the bios royally even with dual bioses. happened to a friend who got auto update for bios that was bad, ended up replacing board

Quote
-Non skeptic says-

Y'know, I was just waiting for the inevitable anecdote. It never fails.

There are viruses that can affect the BIOS, either by clearing or corrupting it (W32.Kriz, [emailprotected], W32.Mypics etc) but they don't ACTUALLY 'infect' the BIOS - certainly clearing a BIOS would do little to help if the infected files remain on the drive.

Maybe you can name one of these mythical virus that live in the BIOS, or provide a link?

A bad flash is not the same as a virus

There was no confirming response of such a virus spreading through the internet...

Full conversationlol.

additionally there really isn't anything a virus could do in the BIOS anyway- Windows replaces all BIOS interrupts with it's own routines, so really the virus can't be used for things like hard drive infection (and even if it could, there is FAR too little space for both the infection routine and the Booting BIOS, so it would PROBABLY just end up being a computer that can infect hard disks when started, but not actually boot. Or it could do SOMETHING really evil, like only allow certain hardware to be used or perhaps randomly swap master and slave arrangements. Although such a prospect would be a great piece of joke malware, as far as spreading (and thus meeting the definition of a virus) it really doesn't hold water.

Additionally most programmers who know enough ASM to do something like that aren't about to waste their time with such childish endeavours.

And as we all know infecting the BIOS while windows is running usually advises you not to perform any other tasks or have any other open applications. One can then logically CONCLUDE that almost all (if any) attempts by malware to infect a BIOS would not only be very system specific but also fail over 99% of the time, since the user, unaware that the BIOS is being flashed will go about their business as usual, which may or may not cause the flashing program, likely very badly written to specific hardware, to fail to flash the BIOS, or possibly hang the entire machine. In either case, the inevitable reboot will mean that you end up with the black screen and possibly a attempt to read the floppy (if there is a ROM in the motherboard as a fail-safe allowing for emergency flash via floppy). The only reason i scoff at this would be to follow the LOGIC of the malware writers themselves...
Sure they may create temporary havoc for awhile but this would be simply and easily repaired...
Since the memory constraints are so shallow i doubt it could carry a payload...even small enough to replicate itself which is after all the ultimate goal .
So they simply do not waste their time on this...
I've been doing this awhile and the lst time i can remember seeing one was 1979 if i remember correctly. From what has been said it also sounds like it would be very easy for an antivirus to thwart such an attack. And also if it were a real threat then I'm sure all antivirus would advertise/boast "BIOS Protection" in the program descriptions. I've never seen one advertise it.

I've actually enjoyed this conversation. I decided to upgrade my BIOS because i had a problem on booting, sometimes the BIOS could not read my devices like HDD, CD ROM (primary and secondary master and slave).
Problem was: The system freezes while booting up, so after I upgraded I don't have such a problem. Sometimes the booting was very slow, so I have had to wait up to 7-10 minutes to see my icons on desktop.
I know that upgrading the BIOS is not recommended to everyone but I could not find a better solution, now everythong works perfectly.
Cheers.

Solve : RAID to IDE in bios to install XP, will that destroy data in drives? HELP!?

Answer»

hello everyone,

I am trying to install Windows XP in a computer that has 4 SATA disks. I formatted C: and D: which were previously in RAID-0 forming three partitions. I un-RAID them to restore them to being old fashioned disks, C: for the system and D: for storing ghost images to regenerate the system in case of crashes or virus damage. That was the EASY part.

The first problem came up when I booted the Windows INSTALLATION CD. It gave me that "Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer." and "press F3 to quit". Which I figured could be solved by going into the BIOS and turning the SATA mode from RAID to IDE.

The thing is, there are 2 other disks 500 GB each, which are set in RAID-0 to form a 1TB 'disk' named "VIDEO". It contains 700 GB worth of user files, professional foto archives, post-production video cuts, and a load of critical data. I can't touch any of that or even make the slightest move that would put it in DANGER. we can't back it up at this point (not enough DVD's and no other disk drives available).

So the first two drives are non-RAID, and the other two are RAID-0. if I go into the BIOS and change the SATA mode from RAID to IDE, just so I can install Windows XP in the C: drive, will that damage in any way the set-up of the disks in RAID?
Should I unplug the two RAID disks, change the SATA mode and install XP; then change the SATA mode to RAID again and put the 500 GB drives back in to play things safe? is this even possible?

hope you have any suggestions. I really appreciate your help, thanks a lot.Does disk management recognize the other drives?

Solve : Have to use Vista - want to use XP?

Answer»

Can anybody help with all of this please – or direct me to some handy links?

The hard disk of my HP PC failed and it was too expensive for the supplier to repair it under warranty so they offered me a new HP PC (model 9570a) with better specs than the old one had. I don’t know what these details of the Vista PC mean but here they are:

Processor : Intel (R) Core (TM)2 Duo CPU E4500 @ 2.20Ghz
Memory (RAM) : 2.00 GB
System type : 32-bit Operating System

The trouble is that it comes bundled with with Vista (Home Premium with Service Pack 1) and Microsoft Works and my old one was bundled with XP and other GOODIES such as Word and Excel.

From my XP PC I have:

-Back up of all my files including program files in MyBook
-A recovery disk with the factory settings

What I would LIKE to do is to be able to use both XP and Vista on my new PC and with XP to have a fresh reinstall from the recovery disk since my XP was GETTING buggy anyway.

I’d like to keep using XP for documents but move my video files over to Vista as my old Media Centre didn’t work anymore and the Vista version looks as if it has more bells and whistles anyway.

Naturally I don’t want to pay for another copy of XP.

If that is not going to work then at least I would have to move all my video, music, Word and Excel files from MyBook over to be used in Microsoft Works. And how would I be able to duplicate all my Firefox settings?

Thanks – I’m not very geekish so I won’t be able to understand too much TECHNICAL stuff.

I disabled auto restart to get to the blue error window and this is what it reads.
Disable or uninstall any anti-virus, disk defrag or BACKUP utilities. Check your hard drive configuration, and check for any updated drivers. Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer.

I do not KNOW how to do any of this if I can not get it to boot up?

Any ideas before I use the recovery disk and she has a complete loss of what has not been BACKED up?The Recovery disk will wipe out ALL your data...do this only as a last resort.
If the machine refuses to boot you could hook up the drive as a SLAVE in another machine and run chkdsk /r from the other machines install of Windows...

The application failed to initiliaze properly(0xc0000005)Does this --> http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=816213 <-- help?Is it Isass.exe, or lsass.exe?
The first one is a bad file, the second is a legit file.ITs lsassOK, so you're stuck at that error, or the boot goes on?
Same thing in Safe Mode?
Do you have Windows CD?no it dosent boot its just is a blank a screen with the pointer(i can move the pointer around).....it does te same thing in safe mode toHave you tried Last Known Good Configuration?Quote from: Broni on May 04, 2009, 05:19:12 PM

Do you have Windows CD?
Yeah, it's important, because the above error may be caused by an infection. Legit lsass.exe file is often a TARGET for viruses.no i dont have the Cd..i tried last know config and that didnt workDownload Windows Recovery Console: http://www.thecomputerparamedic.com/files/rc.iso
Download, and install free Imgburn: http://www.imgburn.com/index.php?act=download
Using Imgburn, burn rc.iso to a CD.
Boot to the CD...let it finish loading.
When the "Welcome to Setup" screen appears, press R to start the Recovery Console.
Then, follow the steps from here: http://icrontic.com/articles/repair_windows_xp, starting below this picture on page 1:
ok let me get this straight
1st dowload the windows recovery console
2nd istall free Imgburn
3rd burn rc.iso to a cd
(this is all using another computer right)

so how do i boot using the cd
Quote
(this is all using another computer right)
Right.

Put the CD into bad computer, and restart it.
At some point, you should see the message:
Press any key to boot from CD
Do so, and follow the rest of the instructions from my link.im reying to use Img burn but it wont let me do any thing...

[attachment deleted by admin]Hello,
I'm having a very similar problem (let me know if I should make a NEW post about this).

My Windows XP won't boot and the box that pops up for me says: "lsass.exe unable to locate COMPONENT" and then it says "...failed to start because LSASRV.dll not found.." which is followed by a blank screen where I only have the mouse pointer. This also occurs when I try to boot from safe mode.

I do have a Windows CD, but I'm not sure that my CD-ROM is working properly. What are the steps I should take with the Windows CD...and is there a way I can fix this without a CD?

Thanks!

Solve : need help with doing CD's?

Answer»

Im wondering if anyone can tell me step by step how to make a CD like if it were to come from a store. Im not sure how to explain it but I want to put a program on a CD and have it start up when I put the CD in. Gosh I hope I explained that right but if anyone can help I WOULD so appreciate it..Hi Anniieee,

You need to create an autorun.inf file and place it in the base directory of the cd you are creating.

Here is a LINK to a useful tool to create autorun.inf files and it works on Windows 95 upwards:

http://autorun.moonvalley.com/

Hope this helps,

Mat

I'm sure we are talking about an autorun cd here and not a bootable cd...? Anniieee, can you confirm?sorry got off thinking that it could. Sorry doing multiple things.Annieee, what kind of CD are you trying to make? Music CD, Data CD, Boot CD? A music CD should autorun as soon as you put it in the CD drive. usually if its DEFAULTED like that in xpQuote from: SuperDave on April 10, 2009, 01:27:34 PM

Anniieee said that she wants to put a program on cd and make it run automatically like the real thing... I can't imagine it would be anything other than a simple application cd... ie. a data cd with a program or program installation on it that starts the setup process automatically - an autorun cd...

She can use the free software above to create an .inf file and just burn it to the cd with the other files...

I'm sure Anniieee will let us know when this post gets read again by her.The anticipation is killing me.

Solve : Login Failure-Relogin After Login?

Answer»

Ok, i got home from the STORE tonight, with a new game in hand, and i go to my computer and i SEE that my computer needs reset after a virus scan, with Norton 360, and then i reset it. When it starts again, it goes to the desktop then it logs out, i log back in, and it logs me out when it touches the desktop screen, then i hit login, and it just repeats over and over and over, its extremely annoying and i would like help fixing it.

IM not really sure on the model and stuff since it is a old casing with new insides. I have Windows XP with the latest SP.

Please help,
DinithraCan you get into safemode?I TRIED that after i tried to get on the first time, none of the other modes work.Have you tried Last Known Good Configuration?

Have you tried getting into another user account?

You said that your computer needed restarting after a virus scan. I used to have Norton, and never had to restart after a scan. Is this something that happens often?I did LKGC but it didnt work either, and Norton asks me to restart after it finds a a big virus already on the computer or is in a file, so that it can fully remove it.

Solve : computer boot/video problems?

Answer»

OK a LITTLE background to this problem so brace yourself. I got a computer for free from a friend who reported it as not booting. I checked and found it was the power supply, so i ordered a new one a few days ago. But on the way home i ran into some problems, i live 1/4 miles back in the woods only accessible by a dirt road witch is currently a mud road. i was also bringing groceries in so i loaded up a sled with the computer well by the time i HIT home some mud had seeped into the sled and ran into the ports on the back such as modem, intergrated video port, and the mouse/keyboard ports. i took the entire thing apart cleaning each component by hand individualy and, as much as i didn't want to, i had to flush out the ports with distilled water. i let it dry under a box fan for around 30 hours. today i received the power supply and after checking the motherboard and finding it was all dry i put it all back togeather, now the problems start. I plugged everything in and pressed the power button, Nothing... i unplug the P1 connector from the motherboard and when i plugged it back in the power light came on but nothing ELSE then when i press the power button everything boots up but no video....any thoughts now that my hands hurt lol?Did you wash the ports on the motherboard with distilled water? If so, did you remove the CMOS battery before doing so?

Have you made SURE everything is in the right place and everything is CONNECTED properly?

Might help to know what model number the computer is.

Solve : NTFS recovery help?

Answer»

Hi all,

I've copied an NTFS filesystem from partition 6 on my 120GB HDD to a new 160GB HDD using the linux mdadm UTILITY. I then resized the extended partition and recreated the NTFS partition with exactly the same start and end blocks as before. However, now I can't READ it.

I've tried chkdsk, I've tried a BartPE recovery disk, and I've tried Pandora Recovery. Unfortunately, all these utilities say that the filesystem is corrupt or unreadable.

Code: [Select]C:\Documents and Settings\Ken>chkdsk /r g:
The type of the file system is NTFS.
Unable to determine volume version and state. CHKDSK aborted.
When I read the filesystem from Linux its still got all the correct NTFS headers, so please can someone help me with suggestions as to how I can recover the data on it (as I can see its still there)?

PS: Linux won't mount it, as it says
Apr 11 16:20:56 stef Captive[23441]: sandbox: FATAL: captive_shared_cache_map_page_set_lsn: assertion `captive_shared_cache_map_object->LogHandle_set' failed
Can I chkdsk the filesystem using its mirror copy of the MFT, like on linux you could fsck with an alternate superblock?

I see from http://ixbtlabs.com/articles/ntfs/ that there is supposed to be a mirror MFT in the middle of the partition, but I'm not sure how to decode where it is?

If it helps here is the first 256bytes of the filesystem

Looks like it might be toast, but I can't see why simply deleting the partition and then recreating another partition in exactly the same location would affect the data?

This is what GetDataBack NTFS says

Please can anyone suggest any other data recovery tools for NTFS?

Solve : XP intermittent freeze-ups on file that can't be found!?

Answer»

Freeze up during defragmentation of C:\ drive and at odd times. First system froze when defrag. tried to move a file called filesystem_blobs.MYD that I think was a large cache file built by Photoshop CS3 Bridge. Then a tech. from Windows Live OneCare told me to rename that file to
filesystem_blobs.old and retry to defrag. The defrag then hung and froze on the .old file. Then they said delete both files so I did so. After that when I tried to defragment the C:\ hard drive it froze when it was trying to move a file A121606.old So I searched for file named A121606.old with a plan to delete it also but search said no such file found. I then tried a search for *.old and search said no files were found with the ending .old What now? I think the file may be too large and over the 4Gb limit for the defragmentation to handle. I don't know why the search can't FIND it, could it be that if it is over 4Gb in size Windows XP won't recognize it and so the search function can't find it? I hope there is an expert out there who has an answer. I can't get help from anyone so far. Thanks. The 4 gigabyte problem refers only to many operating systems before Windows XP. The newer operating systems use a filestsysyem called NTFS, with a maximum file size of 16 Terabytes. This is about 8 times the size of the largest consumer hard drives available on the market, so I don't believe that is a problem!

The randomly named files with "A" in front of them and the extension "*.old" are usually backed up files from System Restore. You cannot find them, because they are in the directory "C:\System Volume Information." Attempting to open this folder will give you "Access Denied," you can try it. It does this for a good reason, some critical files are in there that you don't want to be messing with.

First, you will want to try disk cleanup. Click START>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>Disk Cleanup
Then click on the tab "More Options." Next, click the "Clean Up..." BUTTON next to "System Restore."
This should delete all of the older restore points, excluding the most recent one. At this point, you can also run the other cleanup functions in the "Disk Cleanup" Tab as well, if you want to.

However, if the giant file is in FACT in the newest restore point as well, you can always just shut off system restore and turn it back on which will remove all restore points. To do that, you go into Start>Control Panel>System and click on the tab "System Restore." Check the box "Turn off System Restore on all drives" and click "Apply." It will do some work, so wait a few seconds, then uncheck it and click "Apply."

If that does not fix your problem, you should go into Start>Run and type "chkdsk /r" (without the quotation marks) then press "OK" and reboot your system.

A two-toned blue screen with white text will come up asking if you want to skip the check. Don't skip the check. If all goes well, it will fix the errors and then load windows. If your problem is STILL not fixed, then you may have a virus. However, this is unlikely as the "large file in system restore causes lockups" is not an uncommon problem. You would think Microsoft would limit the file size.

Solve : In search of help?

Answer»

Couple days AGO my cousin was messing with my bios settings. And somehow MESSED it up. Everytime you restarted the computer you would get this diskette drive 0 seek failure. so we just left it as is. Until our web browsers started crashing every 5 minutes. I thought it was just mozilla so i tried opera but i couldnt install it due to it being corrupt.

So i rebooted/reformatted my computer During the copy phaise some files couldnt be copied correctly so i had to skip the files. After windows was installed i tried to install my old programs like aim and mozilla. etc etc but i couldnt because an error message would pop up saying "file is corrupt". So i once again reformatted my computer this time after the "to install a fresh copy of windows xp press enter thing" it would give me a NFTS.sys crash. i tried to reboot again and it worked but still the copy phaise some files i had to skip. Now sometimes on reboot it would give me that NFTS.sys error. and still some programs wont install correctly. does anyone KNOW whats wrong with my computer?!?!?!

I am using windows xp on a dell demin 8400Hah, how funny, I have the exact same computer. Okay, when you formatted the drive, what exactly did you do? Did you try to format from windows, or did you put in the windows CD and format it from there?

By the way, the Dell Dimension 8400 has a restrictive BIOS that doesn't allow you to change very many critical settings, and the ones that you can change that would CAUSE a negative impact would just cause the computer to not boot at all. I tried them all to see what would happen, haha.LOl i tried to reboot from the cd. Idk what to do now man i cant play cs anymore =[Well, what seems to have happened is you didn't reinstall windows correctly. If you already formatted once, I think you might want to try again.

Quote from: BaRR

Put your OS disk in, and reboot your computer. Up in the right-hand corner, there should be a message of what keys to press to enter the boot options menu, usually F8 or F12. Press the key indicated (the "F" keys are in a row at the top of your keyboard) until you get to the boot options menu. Then, select to boot from "CD/DVD drive" or a similar option. A blue screen with a grey bar at the bottom should come up, showing the various files it is loading. After it finishes this, it will show the options to format your drive, and to install windows. First, use the format option on the partition that windows is installed on, (it should be marked as having the windows installation), then select to install windows when it is done formatting.

Since you're having problems:

A. MAKE sure the Installation CD is clean.

B. If the disk is clean, and it still fails to copy files, (giving an error like Cyclical Redundancy Check Error, etc.), or it locks up during the format, this may indicate a hardware problem rather than software. If this happens, it simply may be coincidence, and your cousin didn't mess up anything at all. Corruption errors like these may in fact just be a hard drive going bad. In this case, it would be best to just replace the hard drive.

Could you give details of any other sites that you are experiencing trouble with?

It's impossible to diagnose with the supplied information but if you are having trouble with a lot or even all websites it could suggest it may be a CONTAINED problem with your ISP - Which one are you with? Does anyone have any ideas what can I do ?

Thanks You can actually skip SP2 and go RIGHT to installing SP3...
If it still balks at installing contact MS and they will supply a new authorisation key...

Solve : Windows XP Home boot problem?

Answer»

Long story...

Whenever I tried to boot windows, it would stop at the welcome screen (the Windows XP logo). I looked up how to fix this problem, and found a few different options.

One option was to fix the problem which was CAUSED by a program like MagicISO or Alcohol. Considering I had both of those programs, I thought that MAYBE that was what was causing the problem. So I logged on in safe mode and deleted both of those programs and the virtual drives that I had created with them, but with no success at solving the problem.

Another option was to edit the boot.ini file by adding "/noguiboot/sos/bootlog" to the end to create a boot log which would then reveal the troublesome driver. It would also not show the XP logo at all, and just show the system files which were loading. Once I did that, I then rebooted my computer. This time it stopped loading at the list of system files, and didn't go past there at all. I decided to wait because I figured that maybe it would load with patience. After about 10 minutes of waiting, the computer restarted and stopped in the same place.

This is where I'm at now....
Someone suggested that I use a windows boot disk to boot from there and save my files, and then format my c: drive where the problem definitely was. I can't find my boot disk, so I downloaded the boot file to a floppy disk in an attempt to boot window from the floppy. I inserted the floppy before trying to turn the computer on. Once it was booted, it seemed that the floppy did nothing, and windows didn't boot from it. The screen stopped at the list of system files again.

Someone PLEASE help me!! I don't know what else to do. If I can just access my files and back them up onto my second hard drive, before formatting my computer, I would be happy. I'm really desperate to fix this problem. Slave Drive Tutorial

This will allow you to install your drive in a working machine and copy/burn your data...
Windows does NOT need to be working on your drive for this procedure.
When that's done you will need to obtain an XP CD for a fresh install.

Where did that bootini advice come from BTW ? ?the REASON that i'm posting here at thr MOMENT is because i cant seem to connect to the irc client...

anywho, i successfully slaved my harddrive to this computer. the problem is, is that whenever i try to access my profile to get to my files, i get an "access denied" message.

i figure that i'm past the worst part of my ordeal and that this shouldnt be toomuch of a challenge to fix once someone tells me how.

thanks in ADVANCE,

Solve : Start over with clean system?

Answer»

Hi I am new to your forum and to most this is going to be a stupid question. This all started when I had problems with my sound card. To make a long story short I tried to reinstall windows using the repair option an a gateway recover disk, the problem is that I have a Dell. Now when it fired up I don't have all the drivers or they are just not compatible with the Dell. I went to the device manager and there a the question marks besides the video and ethernet. Since I have totaly messed up with the install I will just have to make it back to stock a clean install. I have an xp disk but it still comes back the same way. So how can I get it to format and have it back to a clean install.........thanks.......two-dogs Travel to Dell's site and enter the Service Tag # of the machine...it will lista all your drivers.
You can also order an original XP restore CD from them that will include the appropiate drivers.
Using a different OEM install CD rarely works...if at all. Thanks for the help I went to the Dell site but wasn't sure what drivers to down load. So you are saying that you can't use a windows install disk. I USED it before to get a hard drive going but for some reason on this one it doesn't fully format. After the install is done it fires up like it is in safe mode the video is at 4 the lowest bit and you can't change it. I can't HOOK up to the internet because it doesn't detect the ethernet card any advice my friend..........two-dogs I didn't say you couldn't use an XP CD...i said THOUGH you can order 1 from Dell.
Did you enter your service tag # ? ?
If so the drivers listed are all the ones that machine uses.
If the CD you have doesn't fully format it sounds like it's a copy of a XP CD...good luck with that. It's best if you have a CD for the drivers needed for your mobo and a genuine copy of an installer for your os.Thanks guys looks like I will be calling dell..........Just one question can I download the drivers on a disk and copy to my computer or is that not an option.......thanks...two-dogs Yes.
Ok I was able to get my video going with the drivers but I need to know which one I need for the ethernet. I am not able to network yet and can't access the Internet. Any help on this........thanks......two-dogs Ok an update all is good I didn't have to get a disk, I was able to ask Dell on there support site and they TOLD me what driver I needed.... I want to thank all of you for all your advice and help .........I am sure I will be back again, I know enough about computers just to be dangerous............two-dogs

Nicely done...
Good to hear you are fixed up and thanx for letting us know...

We'll be here....

Solve : unlock hard drive in windows me?

Answer»

When I try to run the scan disk or defrag a message pops up stating that my hard drive is locked thus not allowing the scan disk/defrag to OPERATE. I thought it possible that my anti virus program MAY have locked up the drive so I uninstalled it but Im still having the PROBLEM. I ended up UNINSTALLING any and all utility programs I downloaded just in case one was causing the problem without positive results. I tried using the DOS PROMPT for windows 98 (unlock c:) since there was no prompt listed for windows ME however that didnt work. Bottom line, can someone tell me how to unlock the hard drive in windows ME?
Thanks

Solve : Control key problems?

Answer»

I'm having problems with using the Control key to select multiple objects. As soon as I press the Control key, my mouse pointer disappears and I am unable to CLICK on anything. Therefore, I can only select one object at a time. This is the case regardless of what program I am in. I have tried it in Microsoft Publisher, KODAK Easy Share, and in Windows Explorer trying to select multiple files. I believe the shift key is also doing the same thing, making it impossible to select multiple objects.

Does anyone have any idea how to fix or reset this? I've tried rebooting the computer, but this situation has been ongoing for quite some time, through many restarts. Everything else seems to work fine. Thank you.
Go into Control PANEL>Mouse>Pointer Option

Check the last box.Thanks. I'm not on the problem computer RIGHT now, but I will DEFINITELY try this!
