Solve : Owner/Administrator/Users concerns? |
|
Answer» I have just completed a clean reinstall of my XP Home edition 5.1 SP3 using the disc package provided by Dell on our old faithful Dimension 1100/b110 system. I have spent some time in researching the configuration of the various accounts to come up with what I would like. In trying to avoid the many pitfalls associated with these matters including being locked out of your own system, inability to access Admin account, and losing inheritance or parent folder properties. For security purposes I have set up two limited user accounts for my wife and I for everday use online. It is my understanding that the SAFEMODE menus are not accessible to anyone with these permissions, YET I just did. I must be missing something. Also I want to HIDE NOT DELETE the OWNER account icon on the welcome screen while still being able to access the Administrator and Owner accounts; which then can only be accessed from SAFEMODE. See the catch there? Anyhow, that is where I am at. Thank you for listening. In Windows XP Home edition the administrator account is visible in SAFE mode. You should set a strong password for that account. One you can remember. |

Solve : Slow startup? |
|
Answer» My computer is only about a year old now, and has been running fine. Recently (past week) after I turned on my computer, and entered my User password, it would take about 30 seconds to reach the DESKTOP, which just showed the background, and about another 30 seconds for the icons to load. Normally, after I entered my user password, the desktop would load almost automatically, within 5 seconds. I have not installed anything new recently, and have tried deleting some files on my desktop to cut down on the amount of items that needed to be loaded, with no LUCK. I have only 4 programs checked off under msconfig -> startup, and I havn't changed anything with that recently either. I've virus scanned my computer with, Superantispyware, AVG, and malwarebytes anti-malware, and came up with nothing. What would cause this recent slower startup and what can I do to fix it?So it takes a minute for the system to boot and you're complaining? I'm sorry, but there's absolutely NOTHING wrong with that.It used to be pretty much instant, and I havn't installed any new programs, and I'm just wondering why it had gotten slower. Also, I tried using system restore to an earlier date, and it kept telling me that my computer could not be restored to any past date.Yeah, welcome to system restore. It's great - until you need it. That's why I always RECOMMEND that everyone should use disc imaging software. |

Solve : File Permission Problems? |
|
Answer» I have TWO Networked computers one runs on XP pro, all service packs installed the other runs on Vista Home with service packs installed. I'm having a bit of a problem with some of the file on the Xp computer not being visible to me when I go to my computer but if I go to the network and examine the hd of the XP computer from the Vista one I see files that I want to access (I am logged in as the ADMINISTRATOR on both) But when I try access them through the network permission is denied. If I try to access the same files directly on the XP computer they do not EVEN show up on the C drive. I logged out and tried as another user, but I still can't find the files. I think it's peer to peer, it's only a small home network running through a router. I think you need to determine what type of network you have...cause it sounds like guesswork so far... |

Solve : Windows Explorer has encountered a problem.....when right click on a file? |
|
Answer» Suddenly, when I right click on any file in a folder, I get the Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and need to shut down........and the option to send the error to Microsoft or not .message. But if I click on a folder, it is OK. Only when I right click on any files, I get this message. slickcondo, Hi and thanks for your reply. I tried it on Safe Mode and it gives the same problem. How do you mean create a new account ? And trying a new file manger ?? Don't get you or how to go about doing this. I have Firefox also, but that is a BROWSER, If you are talking about installing something else other than Windows, sorry to say this is not a practical solution. As for antivirus, yes, this is ran and cheked for update everyday. I also have a Firewall installed. Sorry I forget to state what o/s I am on. It's Windows XP Pro with SP3 and IE7 Apologies if I misunderstood some of your suggestions. I'm not too well versed in computing. Just famaliar with it.OK. You have Windows XP and the problem is when you right click on a file. In Control panel there is a place where you can create a new user account. Sometimes a user profile gets messed up and you find out by creating a new 'clean' user. You could make a new user called 'Fred' or Wilma' or whatever. You log out and into the new account and cheek to see if the problem is there. But if the problem is with Windows Explorer, look at this: Quote Windows Explorer is an application that manages your computer's drives, files and folders. The user-friendly interface allows the computer owner to control the computer as well as delete files and programs. Windows Explorer can become damaged through malware and viruses, which often cause system file corruption and inability to open up folders or files through the Explorer. Errors MAY show up when using Windows Explorer; a common one is "Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and need to close." Computer users can repair damages files, install updates and reset Windows Explorer settings. Running an updated version of a malware removal program will catch viruses and spyware before they cause an infection. This is a bit of a hassle. If you want to try it, click on the link about and give it a try. Do you have a back up? http://www.cubicreality.com/ This link is for another program that does what Windows Explorer does, it ado is a file manager. I have used it, and still use on XP, so I am sure it is safe. Using it might confirm the problem is inside of Windows Explorer.can you get more information on the crash via Appcrashview? I already "know" the cause; It's a shell extension. The only question is which one. Hopefully the crash dump info will narrow it down (You can post it here if you like, somebody may be able to recognize the DLL that is at fault and the software it belongs to), at which point, you can use ShellExView To disable those entries; or, you could uninstall the applicable software. Thanks guys for all your help. I managed to find out the cause. I had installed Ad-Aware a few days ago and I suspect that is what was causing the problem. After removing that program, everything seems to work fine. Thank you all for your contribution and help. I'm just glad this problem is resolved so EASILY. |

Solve : How to Install XP, from now on?? |
|
Answer» Support for XP is coming to an end. Brut I fear someday my XP based laptop shall crash and I will not be able to install XP from the OEM disk because MS no longer supports XP. Why not? I still have a Dell computer running very well in Win XP SP2 and automatic updates turned off. Quote from: jason2074 on June 30, 2011, 11:13:15 PM Really? I thought SP2 and no updates would catch fire! So I don't need to worry? Quote So I don't need to worry?AFAIK, YES. As long as you have your original, OEM discs, drivers intact and more importanly the computer hardware still healthy. I never bothered updating to SP3. Why? Cause I was really observing what would get wrong if I do not. And it has been running for more than 4 YEARS now till SP2 became obsolete from MS support. You are only trap with the limited functions on upcoming softwares required running new operating systems, Vista, Win 7 and son on. But would browsers, softwares, antivirus that were with SP2's that are compatible be gone? Its the thing that I will never know but for sure, it will be a long time slow demising factor. well... if i were you, jason2074, i would update to SP3 before support is COMPLETELY dropped because of the security loopholes. you can skip the updates that only serve to add features... windows xp will be around and has been around for a long long time... i grew up with windows xp.Quote because of the security loopholesI know. The system is for basic browsing and applications packed with an updated antivirus, MBAM,SAS ,windows firewall. Quote I never bothered updating to SP3. Why? Cause I was really observing what would get wrong if I do not.Quote from: Transfusion on July 01, 2011, 12:55:27 AM because of the security loopholes.Name one.http://www.thefreelibrary.com/Microsoft+issues+large+security+update.-a0131437314 http://english.peopledaily.com.cn/90001/90781/90877/6677366.html http://vista.blorge.com/2010/08/23/microsoft-refuses-to-patch-widespread-security-loophole/ http://www.v3.co.uk/v3-uk/news/2030627/microsoft-issues-windows-live-messenger-security-update Quote from: Transfusion on July 01, 2011, 05:01:23 AM http://www.thefreelibrary.com/Microsoft+issues+large+security+update.-a0131437314The "Service pack" that fixes it is SP2, Either way, there aren't any details. They don't cite any source for this. It basically says "These products have vulnerabilities that are fixed" What vulnerabilities? How do I mitigate the issue on my 24/7 server until I can schedule downtime? How do I know if I'm affected? Quote http://english.peopledaily.com.cn/90001/90781/90877/6677366.htmlThat is about Internet Explorer. Quote http://vista.blorge.com/2010/08/23/microsoft-refuses-to-patch-widespread-security-loophole/1. This doesn't mention the OS. 2. It was published in 2010, so it probably isn't specific to XP SP2. 3. It probably refers to something like this. I remember this nonsense. The "flaw" has to do with The DLL search order; when loading a DLL Windows checks: 1. The directory from which the application loaded. 2. The system directory. 3. The 16-bit system directory. 4. The Windows directory. 5. The current directory. 6. The directories that are listed in the PATH environment variable. The vulnerability is triggered only when loading documents from a remote share or WEBDAV (or it was, until it was patched, but it wasn't patched in SP3, in fact, it's unrelated to XP specifically). An "attacker" would either need to convince to person to map some random network location as a drive or connect to a WEBDAV location, at which point they will have to go through another 2 or 3 security prompts to open a file. Then because of the search order, a malicious dll that the program normally would load can be placed in the network path, and contain arbitrary code. Additionally, this is a coding problem on the part of the application, and how it calls LoadLibrary. If the developers of said programs (including some Office applications) had bothered to read this, they would know how to mitigate this concern. DLL's implicitly linked to the executable (and thus resolved by the PE Loader) aren't compromised by this, as far as I can tell; it's only DLL's loaded dynamically via LoadLibrary, LoadLibraryEx, CreateProcess, or ShellExecute functions; and only when those functions are only given a dll filename, rather than a fully qualified path name. And only if the application hasn't used SetDllDirectory() or SetSearchPathMode(). Bottom line: This is a security flaw in the way the applications were written. It's the EQUIVALENT of saying BSD is insecure because you can write a program with buffer overflows. Of course you can, but you sure as *censored* aren't going to get past any sort of security audit. Quote http://www.v3.co.uk/v3-uk/news/2030627/microsoft-issues-windows-live-messenger-security-updateThat is a problem with Live Essentials. There are some very annoying commonalities between these types of "advisories": They never have any bloody details. They don't say What the "attack" or vulnerability entails. All they say is it's a vulnerability. No details on what the problem is, or how to mitigate it on earlier systems- which you can always do given the proper amount of knowledge on the issue. Whether that is because the people reporting it have decided that their readers are sheep who will follow any advice given on the basis of "increasing their security" or whether Microsoft is actually not publishing that stuff (equally likely) I don't know. How can users with a clue know if the problem affects them specifically? They can't. They are just supposed to "drink the kool-aid" and presume that these "security updates" are necessary. And when folks go so far as to repeat complete generalizations like "SP3 has fewer vulnerabilities than SP2"; It fixes some known vulnerabilities, but it no doubt adds countless others. And backing up such a claim only with links that appear to be problems with specific applications and not the Operating System doesn't quite help, either. When I said "Name one"... I meant name one security issue that probably affects a Windows XP machine running SP2 as opposed to one running SP3' with details on exactly what sort of problems could occur. Even the Application-specific issues you listed still require that the victim be targeted specifically, use a specific browser, and go through at least one or 2 security prompts.Wow. That was one huge post. *cools the flames of argument* Okay, its clear who has the upper hand now... You can slipstream SP2 into a standard windows installation, i.e. do not need to redownload SP2 and wait after you finish installing windows. http://www.winsupersite.com/article/product-review/slipstreaming-windows-xp-with-service-pack-2-sp2 Also XP support lasts til 2014...Quote from: patio on July 03, 2011, 08:11:23 PM Also XP support lasts til 2014...So, do I have three years until ... I have to learn to live with Windows 7? No. If you think about it logically you theoretically have all the time in the World... I still for example have an older laptop that i run Win98SE on... When support ended it didn't blow up... My favorite machine in the arsenal happens to run Win2K... It hasn't blown up either... All i see blowing up are your windbag news reports and updates..... Hopefully.Quote from: Geek-9pm on July 03, 2011, 08:47:00 PM So, do I have three years until ...End of Support in no way means they will shut down the activation servers. For all we know, the activation servers are the same ones used for activating Vista and 7 installations. "End Of Support" means "End of Support" (or in this case extended support). Extended support means they'll support users but they'll have to pay for the privilege. Typically, however, this has nothing to do with the standard user. Most users got their windows license when they purchased the machine and are therefore supported by the manufacturer, who probably botched around with the install anyway so MS isn't going to have the first clue what they did with the ISV kit. Windows XP was released in 2001. That was a decade ago. That's eons ago, in "computer time". PCI-Express, multiple core machines, and gobs more memory have become commonplace since, and people still insist on installing XP on their newest machines. This doesn't make sense to me. If you buy a new machine, you either get a OS that can take proper advantage of it's facilities (Vista/7, or a recent Linux distro or FreeBSD release, or something) or you shouldn't even bother with a new machine. It's the logical equivalent of buying a machine designed for windows 98 and wiping the drive and using MS-DOS 6. The only reason is the users NOSTALGIA and personal feeling that the OS is better, and is not based on anything that is testibly falsifiable. The best you can hope for is they'll simply move the goalposts of the discussion. Older Machine=Older OS. Newer Machine=Newer OS. retrofitting an older OS to a newer system is the equivalent of taking your old engine out of your old car and putting it in your new car on the basis that "it will be more familiar". Yes, all that backfiring and crashing that you bought the new car to stop will still be just as familiar, and the fact that you have to skip gear 3 because the gearbox is shot will be familiar. And then you can rant about how t his new computer acts exactly the same as the old one, all the while oblivious to the fact that you are running the exact same Operating System as you were before. |

Solve : File Sorted from Z-A? |
|
Answer» When I browse files from a dialogue box e.g. Open, Browse, etc, the files and folders in the directories are always sorted from Z-A. When BROWSING to the same directory from Windows Explorer, they are sorted from A-Z. It happens to all dialogue boxes. Not a problem. It's a problem, because you have to do that EVERY TIME trying to attach a file when composing an email. Quote from: jason2074 on June 18, 2011, 12:12:54 AM Go to your Windows explorer Tools menu, Folder options, View tab and under Advanced settings, look for Remember each folder's view settings and make sure it is ticked then hit Apply. Any settings change concerning your view details/options will now be saved or remain unchanged.Quote When browsing to the same directory from Windows Explorer, they are sorted from A-Z.Jason, there is no problem browsing/viewing from Windows Explorer. Only in a dialogue box.Anyone? Not if you select "save CHANGES for this view"...When you are opening and viewing certain files/folders, click on view type such as details then on top are Names, Size, Type, etc. Click on the Name bar with an up and down ARROW key for ascending and descending order. This cannot be a fix solution as it could only change temporarily on view types, details when opening dialog boxes for specific folders in Win explorer. |

Solve : Strange Desktop/Taskbar behavior.? |
|
Answer» Hello. I have a strange little anomaly occurring right now. I have posted a screenshot below in CASE it may help. You'll SEE at the lowest left corner of the desktop, the pages minimize there when they're supposed to minimize to the taskbar. Strange behavior. Is there a fix other than System RESTORE? This has happened a few times in the past several months. Where is the location of the taskbar ? ? The taskbar is missing, possibly because explorer crashed. OP: try to start task manager, and use that to run explorer. Have you recently installed any software? It might also be prudent to check for malware (run through the guide here, post the requisite log files on this board, and wait for an expert. piece of trivia: Without Explorer or an equivalent shell to take control of window management, all windows will minimize as child windows of the desktop (as they would normally without Explorer's interference). The default desktop behaviour is to iconize running programs (this is unchanged from NT 3.1, probably). However, Windows 95/NT4 and later don't actually turn them into icons anymore, instead making them small "folded" windows, as can be seen in the OP's screenshot. The pages were Google, C:\ and Outlook Express. The taskbar was hidden below (set to "Auto-hide"). The cat is Mr. Bitchen. I opened up task manager and stopped the instance of Explorer that was running, then started a new one. That fixed it. Thank you guys for your help. It was really annoying. |

Please tell me solution, thanks! Are you SAYING you can't see the drive at all or just some files? Is this only on one system or does it work on some computers but not on others? Did it ever work?Quote even hidden option be checked, or create shortcuts of that folders. I am not sure if this is what you mean, but if you insert your flash drive and all your folders are changed to shortcuts, then you probably have the shortcut virus. You can use your AV to scan the drive and remove it, but don't use malware bytes, it doesn't detect this virus for some reason. The reason I am telling you about this is because my flash drive got infected with this twice and I removed it manually, so if that is the problem and you NEED manual removal instructions, I can give you some. |

Solve : Monitor black Screen? |
|
Answer» Windows XP, 32 bit, Service Pack 3. RAM...2GB, HP Pavilion a1330n, Browser...IE6,Avast Anti-virus, Sunbelt Personal Firewall, MalwareBytes Anti-malware. Sometimes When I'm in the middle of something, the monitor screen shuts down and goes black. The pilot light still stays green, and I can turn off the screen and turn it back on to get it back to normal. It picks up right where it was when it stopped. If I'm in the middle of listening or watching a video, when it does this I can still hear the video just as though nothing has happened. I don't lose anything when this happens either? Any suggestions on what is causing this and how it should be corrected? Thanks for any help you can offer..... Welcome to the forum, and thanks for posting your specs. Looks like your monitor is failing. If it was the internal graphics failing, turning off the monitor would not make a bit of difference. I guess. I have a monitor like that. But I will not replace it until nit goes up in smoke. Thanks for the reply, Geek. I kinda thought that might be the answer. Up in smoke is what I'm going to wait for also....LOL Are there any RECENT changes you have MADE beforehand such as driver updates or software installed or changed certain settings? Have you done cleaning the PC from dust and reconnecting all cable connections and other components INTERNALLY? There might be one that is not firmly seated.Jason...I've made no recent changes in anything. I do regular inside cleaning and never find much dust, etc. I've checked all my connections (many times) as I've asked this same question in other knowledgeable sites, and always seem to get the same answer. Thanks for your suggestions. Every little bit helps. Have you tried using ANOTHER monitor or SWAPPING another cable connector to check if the issue is still present? I think you need to check your mother board. Do you installed Graphic card? |

Solve : "Open With" window/can't run programs.? |
|
Answer» I removed a virus from my PC but, now I get that "Open With" window, and can't run programs. like Firefox etc.At least not without selecting the program I want to open it with each and every time. With that solution you are looking at it writes new keys to the registry so you need to be in regedit. Then go file, import, and select the reg file you won't to add. When you have done this don't forget to remove your system restore points and then re enable system restore. This stops the fake antivirus reinstalling if a system restore is done later. Not sure what you are saying...Download and run exeHelper.

Solve : Can't get internet on cpu?? |
|
Answer» So it means that it worked before and it suddenly stop working and you decided to reinstall windows xp(home/professional?) and still no internet access while there is no flags or marks found under the network adapter/LAN card which is still being recognized? All my other computers are connected to the same linksy router and work FINE. When I tried to start up with msn or try lan automatic settings the computer still dosent want to connect. When I checked on device manager there are no errors or question marks. What happens if you plug the computer directly into the modem? Have you tried taking the ethernet cable from one of the working computers and plugging it into your wife's computer to rule the cable out as the culprit? Sorry EVERYONE had to walk away from this one for awhile. I was gonna just MARK it as solved then try again at a later date while being more concise and informed with the problem at hand. Thank you everyone for your time and advise. |

Solve : Recovery disk needed???? |

When you get to the page where it asks for BACKING up your data etc, select on the left custom reinstall and then you get asked language etc. Also with all IBM equipment if you check on the label underneath there will be a number like Type 2668-C53 and then the serial number. Search on this number at lenevo and you will get all the drivers. better always to use the recovery partition or recovery disks when reinstalling a Laptop. PS you can make recovery Cd's from the recovery partition. |

Solve : white and black bars before windows start up? |
|
Answer» my windows xp crashed this evening. i have reinstalled my windows xp now. but when i boot up my PC, the first screen that i see is a black screen with a bar at the bottom of the screen, which consists of white and black patches(like a zebra crossing). after about 10-12 mins, these black patches get filled up by white, and then the pc starts up normally. Why is this HAPPENING??That is happening because windows is parsing the registry and major system components to check for errors-but 10-12 mins??? How exactly did you reinstall XP?YUP. these white and black bars take 10-12 mins to disappear and then m able to see the first black screen which says windows and the normal booting of the pc starts. |

Solve : Set up disk? |

Answer» My computer did not come with a SET up disk. Is this typical and do I need to have one, where can I get one?By providing first more info. as to what type/brand/model your computer and OS running, a lot of suggestion will be given to you. LAPTOPS nowadays are provided a recovery drive partition. I have a HP pavilion 305w. I think we purchased it in 2004. All it came with were disks for Microsoft WORD trial and Microsoft money, no set up or recovery diskYou can order them online at the HP site.... ...You may also want to check if your Model was shipped with a hidden Recovery partition...It should, my Compaq does. It shows in Windows as the D-Drive and is labeled "Presario RP". 1. Power on the computer 2. Press F10 repeatedly when you see the HP or Compaq logo. 2. When the recovery screen appears, press Next and then Yes to perform a non-destructive recovery. 3. To perform a destructive recovery, CLICK ADVANCED and then Yes. 4. After the recovery is finished, the computer will reboot. |

Solve : Computer running slow.....have tried all suggested solutions? |

Answer» Ok I have a seagate hdd so i downloaded the seagate tool for windows and ran some tests. The first test I ran was called a smart check. It says it checks drive self monitoring and reporting. It passed. Then I did a short drive test which it also passed. Then I tried to do a long drive test but after awhile the program would pop uo saying that the test is taking too long and giving me suggestions why, but i could not complete that test. That is the same one as mine...I said that already. That fact that it never completes SeaTools Long Drive Test is an indicator of something wrong. I have the same drive. BTW, if you want to get the ISO file, it's under Seatools for DOS. http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/support/downloads/seatools My drive is the Barracuda 7200.10. OTHERS in this series have had a high failure rate: http://www.theinquirer.net/inquirer/news/1050374/seagate-barracuda-7200-drives-failing Drive has 2 (or 5) year warranty, run Long Test in DOS & it should return error code for RMA. You may not need to to this, since Seagate is aware of the issues. Contact them. Found this very interesting: http://www.salvagedata.com/hard-drive/seagate-data-recovery/barracudar-720010-hard-drives/ One of the most common problems which are experienced in Seagate Barracuda disk drives (specifically with 7200.7, 7200.8, 7200.9 and 7200.10 series) relate to their read/write head components. Seagate introduced a new special coating technology in this line for the platters intended and designed to better protect the magnetic layers on the platter. The long term effect of this coating was that it caused more problems than the level of protection it offered to the drive. This protective layer tends to flake under certain environmental conditions, causing small BITS of the flaky particles to stick to the read/ write heads which makes reading very unstable. When these particles get embedded in substantial quantities, the disk drive will lose track positioning. This RESULTS in failed read/write ability making user data completely inaccessible. The symptoms of such a failure are clicking, knocking, sweeping sounds: Click on the arrows in the link to hear the sounds.... [recovering disk space - old attachment deleted by admin]Update Ok I burned the iso, booted it up and ran the tests.... The short drive test passed The long drive test passed The acoustic test passed. What now?Quote from: execpro22 on May 16, 2011, 03:49:26 PM ...What now?Quote from: Computer_Commando on May 16, 2011, 02:34:39 PM ...Seagate is aware of the issues. Wrong question. The right question is: "How to fix the problem?" He can buy a new HDD of 'the same type and about the same size and do a fresh install of the OS. If that does NOT solve the problem, he would he move on to something else. This is not my personal idea, that is what they teach field technicians.. |
