Solve : Owner/Administrator/Users concerns?

Answer»

I have just completed a clean reinstall of my XP Home edition 5.1 SP3 using the disc package provided by Dell on our old faithful Dimension 1100/b110 system. I have spent some time in researching the configuration of the various accounts to come up with what I would like. In trying to avoid the many pitfalls associated with these matters including being locked out of your own system, inability to access Admin account, and losing inheritance or parent folder properties. For security purposes I have set up two limited user accounts for my wife and I for everday use online. It is my understanding that the SAFEMODE menus are not accessible to anyone with these permissions, YET I just did. I must be missing something. Also I want to HIDE NOT DELETE the OWNER account icon on the welcome screen while still being able to access the Administrator and Owner accounts; which then can only be accessed from SAFEMODE. See the catch there? Anyhow, that is where I am at. Thank you for listening. In Windows XP Home edition the administrator account is visible in SAFE mode. You should set a strong password for that account. One you can remember.

If you need more protection, consider using a password in the BIOS.

Would you like to know how to make a hidden user account in Windows XP? That user is not visible on the start up screen. You have to type in the user name.

Howdy,
I did not intend to stray so far from my quest for an answer, but it happens when researching subject matter. I have not made any moves on this yet. I did set up a password for the Admin account. I also have one for the Owner account since it has Admin permissions and control.
YES!I would like to know how to have a hidden log on by merely typing in the name. That would be a suitable solution in regard to my post. That would be great! Can you provide me the information or direct me to a source that explains how? Most Windows version have this feature available. The hidden user is not seen on the welcome screen, but if you go into user accounts, he is there.

If you use BING as your search engine, you can look up 'Hidden User Account' and get results like these:
http://nerdyloft.com/2006/10/23/hidden-user-accounts-control-in-windows-xp/

http://www.theeldergeek.com/create_hidden_user_account.htm

http://www.intelliadmin.com/index.php/2006/09/hide-user-accounts-from-the-windows-xp-welcome-screen/

Here is a post specific to Windows 7
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itproui/thread/16378967-8a39-4aef-85e4-d859a71648d3

You have to edit the REGISTRY. So you also need to make a backup of the registry as a precaution. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Back-up-the-registry
Hope you have fun with these! Thank you for the information. I will check on that straightaway, if I don't fall asleep first. I am running XP PRO and XP Home on two separate towers. I have no experience with Windows 7, but I would like to entertain the POSSIBILITY that similarity makes this feasible across the board for most MSoft users. I will update back here on on Wednesday with a result for the INFO. Thank you for your time and interest in assisting me with my inquiry.

Solve : MY PC WILL NOT REBOOT?

Answer»

I HAVE A COMPAQ EVO510SFF YESTERDAY IT FROZE SO I UNPLUGGED IT FROM THE MAINS,UPON SWITCHING IT ON I GOT A BLACK SCREEN SAYING THAT WINDOWS WILL START IN 30 SECONDS,BUT IT KEEPS REPEATING ITSELF OVER AND OVER AGAIN.I HAVE TRIED SAFEMODE AND LAST KNOWN CONFIGURATION AND STILL IT RETURNS TO REPEATING ITSELF.I THEN WENT TO THE BOOT UP ORDER AND CHANGED THE SETTINGS(BY THE WAY I,M A COMPLETE NOVICE)AND I,M STILL GETTING BACK TO THE BEGINNING,CAN SOMEONE HELP ME,PLEASE ???I should have mentioned that i do not have a recovery disc, please excuse the capitals a complete oversightBoot to the XP CD and choose the SECOND repair option, allowing XP to install on top of itself. After completion you'll need to go to Windows Update and download & install all updates (except for hardware & driver related updates, which should never be downloaded from Windows Update - only from the OEM websites). Here is a clear tutorial on how to perform a repair install: http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/topic/138-how-to-repair-windows-xp/

Also, please do not post in all CAPS - it's the forum equivalent of SHOUTING.sorry for posting in caps,i forgot to MENTION that i do not have a recovery disc,as i said i am a complete novice to this, many thanks to you,can i be advised more pleaseI checked the specs of your computer and don't see that it has a recovery partition (though I guess it may). So without either a recovery cd or an XP cd I'm not sure what else to tell you.You could try BORROWING the same disks or OS that came with your PC from people you know to perform the repair option.

Solve : Windows XP startup Repair looooop?

Answer»

Hey guys! So basically I've been trying to boot my computer MANY times but to no avail. My computer starts up and instead of starting up like it normally does, it says "windows is loading files...". Then, it shows a strange loading bar and goes to the startup repair. Each time it says startup repair cannot repair this computer automatically" and in the problem details:
"Problem signature:
Problem Event Name: StartupRepairOffline"
and then the problem signatures from 1-7"

Can someone PLEASE help me boot my computer? Was this not already considered somewhere else?
You kn ow you are supposed to give us some details. OK, it failed 7 times. That HELPS. A little.

But just what did you change?
Did you install new RAM?
Did you drop your computer?
Have you tried using your backup DRIVE?
And what kind of computer? I honestly haven't changed anything, and I don't have a backup drive. Sorry. I'm don't really know my computer components.

But, anyways, I'm using an asus motherboard proactive ai series a8n-sli deluxe.

OH. actually, I think I allowed a "setupprogram (followed by many numbers)" because I THOUGH it was another XP upgrade thingie. Now that I think about it, maybe not?oh. and i don't think the problem signatures are for the number of time it's shut down because it's been 1-7 i think basically the entire time. I'll just give you everything in the problem details:
"Problem signature:
Problem Event Name: StartupRepairOffline
Problem Signature01: 6.1.7600.16385
Problem Signature02: 6.1.7600.16385
Problem Signature03: unknown
Problem Signature04: 21200803
Problem Signature05: AutoFailover
Problem Signature06: 9
Problem Signature07: BadPatch
OS version:6.1.7600.2.0.0.256.1
Local ID: 1033"
Boot your XP CD and do a repair install of windows. http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/topic/138-how-to-repair-windows-xp/
Make sure to choose REPAIR and NOT FRESH INSTALL.I'm sorry! I actually have Windows 7! my friend upgraded it for me a while back. would there be another way for me to fix it without a cd cuz i don't have it. ):There is some detail you are not giving use.
Quote

Problem Event Name: StartupRepairOffline
Does not belong to Windows XP

Is this what you saw?
Problem Event Name: StartupRepairOffline
Problem Signature 01: 6.1.7600.16385
Problem Signature 02: 6.1.7600.16385

You have posted in the XP forum. If you are using the 64 bit Windows 7, please post you problem in the right forum. You will need the disc to perform a repair install on Win 7.

Solve : receive error 51 when having MyBook plugged in?

Answer»

Hi,

I have been receiving the following error message from my machine running on XP Pro SP3.

Event ID: 51
Source: Disk
Description: An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk1\D during a paging operation.

What happens is that I have an external Hard drive called Western Digital MyBook Mirror Edition plugged into to this PC. I got a strong feeling that this error is related to the external hard drive.

My question is whether there is a way of working around this problem.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank youI would start with running chkdsk on the drive and see if you can CLEAN up the errors on the drive.

Hi Spoiler,

I run the chkdsk on the WD MyBook drive as suggested but when I checked the event log this morning, still got the warning messages with event id: 51 repeating EVERY 10 or 15 minutes or so.

Any other workarounds that you may think of I could TRY?

Many thanks I suggest we make sure the external drive is okay. Go to the WD website and download their diagnostic utility for your drive. Burn it to cd, boot to it and run it.Quote from: ASSOCIATES on June 26, 2011, 08:49:08 PM

Solve : Slow startup?

Answer»

My computer is only about a year old now, and has been running fine. Recently (past week) after I turned on my computer, and entered my User password, it would take about 30 seconds to reach the DESKTOP, which just showed the background, and about another 30 seconds for the icons to load. Normally, after I entered my user password, the desktop would load almost automatically, within 5 seconds. I have not installed anything new recently, and have tried deleting some files on my desktop to cut down on the amount of items that needed to be loaded, with no LUCK. I have only 4 programs checked off under msconfig -> startup, and I havn't changed anything with that recently either. I've virus scanned my computer with, Superantispyware, AVG, and malwarebytes anti-malware, and came up with nothing. What would cause this recent slower startup and what can I do to fix it?So it takes a minute for the system to boot and you're complaining? I'm sorry, but there's absolutely NOTHING wrong with that.It used to be pretty much instant, and I havn't installed any new programs, and I'm just wondering why it had gotten slower. Also, I tried using system restore to an earlier date, and it kept telling me that my computer could not be restored to any past date.Yeah, welcome to system restore. It's great - until you need it. That's why I always RECOMMEND that everyone should use disc imaging software.

As for the startup, I really would forget about it. But if you need to play around you can do this. Open msconfig and on the General tab choose "selective startup" (uncheck all three items) and reboot. Does the problem still occur? If not, start adding items back to msconfig one or two at a time, rebooting after each change, until the problem reappears and you'll have identified the offending process. This is clearly a time consuming procedure, but it is the best way to determine if some process loading with the system is the cause of your problem.

After you've isolated the cause, do not use msconfig to permanently disable the process. Instead, if it is a service go to START - RUN and type: SERVICES.msc (then press enter) and disable the service OR, if it a program, you can download & run a simple app such as Mike LIN's Startup Control Panel (http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml) to enable, disable, or otherwise manage startup programs.
I have found the problems.

One is "Background Intelligence T..." by Microsoft Corporation (It won't let me maximize the screen so I can't see what the word after Intelligence is.) This program causes about a 10 second delay after I enter my password, but the desktop loads with the icons automatically after, so I'm not sure if this is a problem.

The second program I found is:

hpqcxs08 by Microsoft Corporation which causes both a 30 second delay after entering my password and a 30 second delay for the icons to appear after my background appears.

Now would I use the steps you have listed to disable them, or are these needed programs, and I should keep them enabled?

Also at the moment I have both of these programs disabled(unchecked) and my computer is noticeably faster. Background Intelligence Transfer Service. The other is a service installed by your HP printer. You can disable the services by going to START - RUN - services.msc
Or you can do as I suggest and leave everything alone.

DO NOT use msconfig to make permanent startup changes. Msconfig is strictly a diagnostic utility.

Solve : File Permission Problems?

Answer»

I have TWO Networked computers one runs on XP pro, all service packs installed the other runs on Vista Home with service packs installed. I'm having a bit of a problem with some of the file on the Xp computer not being visible to me when I go to my computer but if I go to the network and examine the hd of the XP computer from the Vista one I see files that I want to access (I am logged in as the ADMINISTRATOR on both) But when I try access them through the network permission is denied. If I try to access the same files directly on the XP computer they do not EVEN show up on the C drive. I logged out and tried as another user, but I still can't find the files.
How do I get myself out of this mess?
Thank youIs this a peer to peer or are you on a domain?

I think it's peer to peer, it's only a small home network running through a router. Quote from: ozsan on June 30, 2011, 07:38:10 PM

Solve : Windows Explorer has encountered a problem.....when right click on a file?

Answer»

Suddenly, when I right click on any file in a folder, I get the Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and need to shut down........and the option to send the error to Microsoft or not .message. But if I click on a folder, it is OK. Only when I right click on any files, I get this message.

Does anyone know what is causing this ? It is also taking a long time for icons to appear on my desktop after I start up. It just shows my desktop them without any icon for more than a minute.

I suspect this happens when I had the recent Windows recent updates which are NetFramework. Anyone encountering the same problem and managed to resolved these 2 issues ? Are these 2 problems related ?

Any help greatly appreciated. Thanksslickcondo,
You have not told us what OS you are using.
Here are some things you can try:
1. Boot in safe mode and see if it changes.
2. Create a new user account ans log in to it and check.
3. Try another brand of file manager, a alternative to Windows Explorer.
http://www.cubicreality.com/
Of course you do Anti-Virus scans on a regular basis, -Right?

EDIT: See this if you have Vista or Windows 7

Hi and thanks for your reply. I tried it on Safe Mode and it gives the same problem.

How do you mean create a new account ? And trying a new file manger ?? Don't get you or how to go about doing this. I have Firefox also, but that is a BROWSER, If you are talking about installing something else other than Windows, sorry to say this is not a practical solution.

As for antivirus, yes, this is ran and cheked for update everyday. I also have a Firewall installed.

Sorry I forget to state what o/s I am on. It's Windows XP Pro with SP3 and IE7

Apologies if I misunderstood some of your suggestions. I'm not too well versed in computing. Just famaliar with it.OK. You have Windows XP and the problem is when you right click on a file.
In Control panel there is a place where you can create a new user account. Sometimes a user profile gets messed up and you find out by creating a new 'clean' user. You could make a new user called 'Fred' or Wilma' or whatever.
You log out and into the new account and cheek to see if the problem is there.
But if the problem is with Windows Explorer, look at this:
Quote
Windows Explorer is an application that manages your computer's drives, files and folders. The user-friendly interface allows the computer owner to control the computer as well as delete files and programs. Windows Explorer can become damaged through malware and viruses, which often cause system file corruption and inability to open up folders or files through the Explorer. Errors MAY show up when using Windows Explorer; a common one is "Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and need to close." Computer users can repair damages files, install updates and reset Windows Explorer settings. Running an updated version of a malware removal program will catch viruses and spyware before they cause an infection.

This is a bit of a hassle. If you want to try it, click on the link about and give it a try. Do you have a back up?

http://www.cubicreality.com/
This link is for another program that does what Windows Explorer does, it ado is a file manager. I have used it, and still use on XP, so I am sure it is safe. Using it might confirm the problem is inside of Windows Explorer.can you get more information on the crash via Appcrashview?

I already "know" the cause; It's a shell extension. The only question is which one. Hopefully the crash dump info will narrow it down (You can post it here if you like, somebody may be able to recognize the DLL that is at fault and the software it belongs to), at which point, you can use ShellExView To disable those entries; or, you could uninstall the applicable software.
Thanks guys for all your help.

I managed to find out the cause. I had installed Ad-Aware a few days ago and I suspect that is what was causing the problem. After removing that program, everything seems to work fine.

Thank you all for your contribution and help. I'm just glad this problem is resolved so EASILY.

Solve : Windows XP Pro and Net Framework?

Answer»

Over a FAIRLY long time slowly one after the other of my THREE desktops (2x XPPro and 1xXP Home) has stopped working on any program that needs NET Framework.

Automatic Updates to it won't load.

Re-installation FAILS.

I have cleared any remnants off as fully as I know how inc registry removal and tried to reload it, but installation still fails, with no information as to why.

Any ideas please??

You likely need versions 3.0 & 3.5, in addition to 2.0. My WinXP has 1.0, 1.1 ,2.0, 3.0, 3.5
I have not found anything that needs ver 4.0.
They are cumulative, later versions do not replace earlier ones.
All versions are here: http://www.microsoft.com/net/download.aspxYou mean they are Not cumulative...Correct. He's GONE already!

Multiple errors such as posted POINT to either an overheating issue or a POWER supply problem...I'm thinking the same as Patio. It's a laptop, so we need a lot more information, starting with make & model.Dell Inspirion 9200. Recently took it apart and cleaned out all fan/vent areas. Remember I mentioned a new battery that is not charging.BSOD's probably indicates a malfunction of the motherboard. New battery not charging may be due to battery being "new old stock". Li-Ion batteries don't have an unlimited shelf life. An Inspiron 9200 is 6-7 years old? I don't think the 2 problems are related.Ok so get this....I had purchased a new battery and power cord from agptek because my old battery wouldn't charge and I had to splice wires together for power cord where they had bent and broke. so I saved the old power cord, switched it out replacing my new one and walla no frozen screen, no blue screen. Could really have been that easy? Been on all morning now and no issues. Still need a new one because my splicing limits the ability of the power cord to charge the battery some how. We'll see if it it this works all day. If so I am buying an original dell cord.

Thanks for the help and insights.Hey, Hi. Well replacing the new power cord with the old one has stopped the blue screening, buuuut....Still freezing up, sorry. Any ideas? any free reg cleaners out there (Really free not free to scan, then register for $$) ? Thanks.ok so it didn't solve blue screening either. Just caught up to me today. On this blue screen msg it said try running the "driver verifier" and try "enabling special pool" Any ideas what this is? In addition to the reg cleaner from previous post is there also a FREE way to find out what drivers need updating and be able to update those drivers?

Solve : How to Install XP, from now on??

Answer»

Support for XP is coming to an end.
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/help/end-support

So,if ever I need to install XP again on a machine with COA and I have the right version of XP SP3 for that machine, and I have all the chip drivers I can install XP. Right? But with it still authenticate? And what about all the updates after SP3?

OK. I am paranoid. Brut I fear someday my XP based laptop shall crash and I will not be able to install XP from the OEM disk because MS no longer supports XP.

Is tat right nor wrong?
How do I get the updates?
OEM disks should be okay, as they are "pre-activated" if they detect a certain make of pc, and don't require internet access for activation. as for updates... *not sure...* Quote

Why not? I still have a Dell computer running very well in Win XP SP2 and automatic updates turned off.

Really? I thought SP2 and no updates would catch fire!
So I don't need to worry?
Quote
So I don't need to worry?
AFAIK, YES. As long as you have your original, OEM discs, drivers intact and more importanly the computer hardware still healthy. I never bothered updating to SP3. Why? Cause I was really observing what would get wrong if I do not. And it has been running for more than 4 YEARS now till SP2 became obsolete from MS support. You are only trap with the limited functions on upcoming softwares required running new operating systems, Vista, Win 7 and son on. But would browsers, softwares, antivirus that were with SP2's that are compatible be gone? Its the thing that I will never know but for sure, it will be a long time slow demising factor. well... if i were you, jason2074, i would update to SP3 before support is COMPLETELY dropped because of the security loopholes. you can skip the updates that only serve to add features...
windows xp will be around and has been around for a long long time... i grew up with windows xp.Quote
because of the security loopholes
I know. The system is for basic browsing and applications packed with an updated antivirus, MBAM,SAS ,windows firewall.

The "Service pack" that fixes it is SP2, Either way, there aren't any details. They don't cite any source for this. It basically says "These products have vulnerabilities that are fixed" What vulnerabilities? How do I mitigate the issue on my 24/7 server until I can schedule downtime? How do I know if I'm affected?

1. This doesn't mention the OS.
2. It was published in 2010, so it probably isn't specific to XP SP2.
3. It probably refers to something like this. I remember this nonsense.
The "flaw" has to do with The DLL search order; when loading a DLL Windows checks:

1. The directory from which the application loaded.
2. The system directory.
3. The 16-bit system directory.
4. The Windows directory.
5. The current directory.
6. The directories that are listed in the PATH environment variable.

The vulnerability is triggered only when loading documents from a remote share or WEBDAV (or it was, until it was patched, but it wasn't patched in SP3, in fact, it's unrelated to XP specifically). An "attacker" would either need to convince to person to map some random network location as a drive or connect to a WEBDAV location, at which point they will have to go through another 2 or 3 security prompts to open a file. Then because of the search order, a malicious dll that the program normally would load can be placed in the network path, and contain arbitrary code. Additionally, this is a coding problem on the part of the application, and how it calls LoadLibrary. If the developers of said programs (including some Office applications) had bothered to read this, they would know how to mitigate this concern. DLL's implicitly linked to the executable (and thus resolved by the PE Loader) aren't compromised by this, as far as I can tell; it's only DLL's loaded dynamically via LoadLibrary, LoadLibraryEx, CreateProcess, or ShellExecute functions; and only when those functions are only given a dll filename, rather than a fully qualified path name. And only if the application hasn't used SetDllDirectory() or SetSearchPathMode(). Bottom line: This is a security flaw in the way the applications were written. It's the EQUIVALENT of saying BSD is insecure because you can write a program with buffer overflows. Of course you can, but you sure as *censored* aren't going to get past any sort of security audit.

That is a problem with Live Essentials.

There are some very annoying commonalities between these types of "advisories":

They never have any bloody details. They don't say What the "attack" or vulnerability entails. All they say is it's a vulnerability. No details on what the problem is, or how to mitigate it on earlier systems- which you can always do given the proper amount of knowledge on the issue. Whether that is because the people reporting it have decided that their readers are sheep who will follow any advice given on the basis of "increasing their security" or whether Microsoft is actually not publishing that stuff (equally likely) I don't know. How can users with a clue know if the problem affects them specifically? They can't. They are just supposed to "drink the kool-aid" and presume that these "security updates" are necessary. And when folks go so far as to repeat complete generalizations like "SP3 has fewer vulnerabilities than SP2"; It fixes some known vulnerabilities, but it no doubt adds countless others. And backing up such a claim only with links that appear to be problems with specific applications and not the Operating System doesn't quite help, either.

When I said "Name one"... I meant name one security issue that probably affects a Windows XP machine running SP2 as opposed to one running SP3' with details on exactly what sort of problems could occur. Even the Application-specific issues you listed still require that the victim be targeted specifically, use a specific browser, and go through at least one or 2 security prompts.Wow. That was one huge post. *cools the flames of argument* Okay, its clear who has the upper hand now...
You can slipstream SP2 into a standard windows installation, i.e. do not need to redownload SP2 and wait after you finish installing windows.

No.

If you think about it logically you theoretically have all the time in the World...

When support ended it didn't blow up...

My favorite machine in the arsenal happens to run Win2K...
It hasn't blown up either...

End of Support in no way means they will shut down the activation servers. For all we know, the activation servers are the same ones used for activating Vista and 7 installations. "End Of Support" means "End of Support" (or in this case extended support). Extended support means they'll support users but they'll have to pay for the privilege. Typically, however, this has nothing to do with the standard user. Most users got their windows license when they purchased the machine and are therefore supported by the manufacturer, who probably botched around with the install anyway so MS isn't going to have the first clue what they did with the ISV kit.

Windows XP was released in 2001. That was a decade ago. That's eons ago, in "computer time". PCI-Express, multiple core machines, and gobs more memory have become commonplace since, and people still insist on installing XP on their newest machines. This doesn't make sense to me. If you buy a new machine, you either get a OS that can take proper advantage of it's facilities (Vista/7, or a recent Linux distro or FreeBSD release, or something) or you shouldn't even bother with a new machine. It's the logical equivalent of buying a machine designed for windows 98 and wiping the drive and using MS-DOS 6. The only reason is the users NOSTALGIA and personal feeling that the OS is better, and is not based on anything that is testibly falsifiable. The best you can hope for is they'll simply move the goalposts of the discussion.

Older Machine=Older OS. Newer Machine=Newer OS. retrofitting an older OS to a newer system is the equivalent of taking your old engine out of your old car and putting it in your new car on the basis that "it will be more familiar". Yes, all that backfiring and crashing that you bought the new car to stop will still be just as familiar, and the fact that you have to skip gear 3 because the gearbox is shot will be familiar. And then you can rant about how t his new computer acts exactly the same as the old one, all the while oblivious to the fact that you are running the exact same Operating System as you were before.

Solve : Flash drive won't open in my computer, also computer freezes up?

Answer»

I have a Dell Computer with windows XP . I use a number of FLASH drives, the one in question is a PNY 8 GB, It has worked well until now
I WOULD say it's about a little less than half full. I tried to open it to check on how much space was left and not only would it not open but my computer froze up. I tried a few times to open it, but gave up because I was afraid to harm the computer. Does this mean that it's broken and that I've lost everything on it ??Does it work with other computers?I don't know, I don't have any other and don't k now where I can try it. Just seems strange it worked one minute and not the next.Well, the only way to test if the DRIVE is good is to try it in another computer. You can also try a different drive in your computer just to make sure that works. What type of files are contained on your FD? Solve : File Sorted from Z-A?

Answer»

When I browse files from a dialogue box e.g. Open, Browse, etc, the files and folders in the directories are always sorted from Z-A. When BROWSING to the same directory from Windows Explorer, they are sorted from A-Z. It happens to all dialogue boxes.

For example, when I try to attach a file to Outlook message, or to web-based mails (tried on IE/Firefox/Chrome), all same.

Any IDEA what is the problem here?

Thanks. Not a problem. You chose what ORDER you want.
Right click on a blank area, select sort by.. .. pick name date or what ever.
If you have details on, you can invert sort by clicking name.Go to your Windows explorer Tools menu, Folder options, View tab and under Advanced settings, look for Remember each folder's view settings and make sure it is ticked then hit Apply. Jason, there is no problem browsing/viewing from Windows Explorer. This cannot be a fix solution as it could only change temporarily on view types, details when opening dialog boxes for specific folders in Win explorer.

Solve : No sync?

new rebuild, Asus m4n68t mobo Amd Phe.llx4 840 cpu, and 2g 1600 ram . Ran start up disk to install and completed win xp.
Boot computer and get a [no sync]. Tried different monitor other monitor said [no signal], when reset button PUSHED i got a screen
\windows\system32\config\system is missing or corruptI would SUGGEST a repair install because this is a fresh installation. the \windows\system32\config\system is missing or corrupt MEANS a registry error has occured: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307545Then my restore disks do not restore the registry. Would this also cause the No Sync to show?

ThanksA [No Sync] means that the GRAPHICS card is not outputting anything to the monitor.

Your windows restore disks should wipe EVERYTHING on your computer.Excuse the LAMENESS.
The rebuild was only the mobo, cpu and ram. The hard drive is original, [no graphics card].

I ran restore disk when I finished partial rebuild. 46-48% of the way through the restore I got that message for windows corrupt.
Ran it a second time and it completed. Rebooted and flashes through Asus screen. Ends up finally asking if I want to open in safe mode (i tried) and other options (i tried) to no avail.

Solve : Help - receive multiple of event messages?

Answer»

Hi,

I'm desperate to resolve the following error issue from my windows XP PRO PC.

From the Application under Event Viewer, I received a MULTIPLE of the following warning events as follows
Source: EventSystem
Event ID: 4356

Description: The COM+ Event System failed to create an instance of the subscriber partition:{41E9....}!new:{6295D-F2D-35EE-11D1-8707-00C04FD93327}.
CoGetObject returned HRESULT 8000401A.

This event occurred at every 20 minutes or so. I found the meaning of this error message - it's to do with offline file sync or mobsync.exe.
I went to check to see if MobSync.exe service was running but could not find it in the TASK manager list.

In the System under Event Viewer, I received a System Error message:
Source: System Error
Event ID: 1003

Description: Error CODE 1000000a, parameter1 0000001c, parameter2 00000002, parameter3 00000001, parameter4 80702a16.

I wonder what I should do. Is this to do with hardware issue?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank youAre you having any problems with the system? If not, don't worry about it. Just stay out of event viewer. Thanks Allan for your reply.

I thought event viewer tells us what's happening to our system so that we could take a note and do something before any major issues that might break down the system in the future. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Many thanks

Yes, you are wrong. It reports anything it perceives to be an anomaly - but most of those aren't anything worth noting. For example, if you intentionally disable a service and the system expects that service to be active, it will continually REPORT the service hasn't started. All you need to worry about are red error messages - and even then, you shouldn't be in the event viewer unless there is a problem with the system.

Solve : Windows XP - Limited account users cant access internet?

Answer»

I am running Windows XP with an administrator account. I recently DOWNLOADED Google chrome and set it as my default browser however I can't figure out how to allow access to it for other account users on the same PC.Chrome is installed in C:\DOCUMENTS and Settings\Admin\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe, which causes problems with application limitation in restricted USER accounts.

You would have to install Chrome on the user's account, then allow an exception for the Chrome program to function with the Windows admin account.

Source: http://forums.techguy.org/web-email/764929-solved-google-chrome-xp-limited.htmlThanks for that info but being a bit of a novice; when you say install it on the users account and allow exceptions, how do I do that?Running the chrome INSTALLER while logged onto the limited user account and chrome should work. What and where is the Chrome Installer? Don't forget I cant access the Chrome folder from the other user account.Sorry for not being clear on my instructions.
The Chrome installation is unique to users-it installs into the Local Settings folder of a user, so you should log into the limited user account, go to chrome.google.com, download chrome, and install chrome.Your being really helpful Transfusion but it seems like one step forward two back............I can't connect to the internet via the other users account. If I try to connect using the old internet connection icon on the desktop (tiscali) it comes up with error message 797. This may be because I have moved house and changed the internet setup (now through a router) since the other users account was last used, maybe? I don't know.Through a router? that means the original connection required you to manually enter a username/password for a broadband connection(DSL connection).

Error 797: The connection failed because the MODEM or other connecting device failed. Please make sure that the modem or other connecting device is installed.

from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/317222

most likely your router is already dialing up the connection for you-it would be helpful if you provided the make and model of your router so we can help you get your computer on the internet if it is not already. I hope that you are not confusing router and modem though.

That means you should try installing google chrome from internet explorer, or downloading the google chrome installation file on another pc, putting it onto a usb drive, then plugging it into your pc while you are in your limited access account.

Solve : Again reboot loop but slightly different - No soution - Read FAQ?

Answer»

Hello my friends.

Recently while I was working in an excel file Bios sound was heard and the PC stuck . suppose that was protection for CPU overheating. After that, the PC was dead . Frightened that I lost a job of 3 days on Excel , I took out the disk on my other pc to take thefile manually. As a consequence windows screamed that the system RECOVERED from a serious problem and that the hardware changed completely so I must reactivate them. But yesterday I tried to open my first PC again and it was looping in windows logo again and again.
1. I checked memories etc.
2. The CPU fan is intact and CPU temp 39C
3. The supplier seems to be working and is more than enough for the hardware I have
4. At sometime the NTDLR failed. I regained that through cd recovery console. Nothing. Still the same message

I know that I should back up etc etc I know that is 99% that I need to reinstall windows but I must GAIN my windows as it was bcs i have many folders that I cannot detect them if I use it as a slave drive in my other PC.

Im afraid that mechanically the disc is affected. (but it wouldn't load up to windows logo...

Any help???
Really HELPFUL site by the way

Thanks
Can you boot into Safe Mode?could u please try it either last KNOWN good configuration or safe mode?..just try and reply..what response u will get? Thanks for response!

Nope.
None of safe mode optionsI want to understand what you did.....

The system locked up so you took the hard drive and put it into another computer to try to boot it from the new machine? When that didn't work you put the drive back into the first machine and now it won't boot?

Is this right?

Im sorry. Yes

1. PC makes the BIOS noise and stucks. After shuting down it doesn't start again.
2. I take out the main disk and put it into my other PC as a master
3. It says that the hardware changed significantly...you must reactivate windows as well as an error message that the system recovered from a serious error
4. Still though, the windows started and I took all of my files.
5. Then I return the disk back to the first (damaged PC) as a master again
6. and reboot loop starts

Thanks a lot for help!!Hi well i would take the drive out again and install it as secondary in the other machine
Copy off all your needed data
and then download and run HDtune

Don't copy anything to the slave drive pls
select hard drive health and see if the slave drive is ok
if not thats your problem.hm! good idea!

At least I ll take back most of my files and if I can save the OS even better

Thanks for the advice!!

Solve : cannot delete corrupted file from flash drive?

Answer»

I was transferring a folder from my INTERNAL HD to a flash drive attached by a USB port and the computer froze. I re-started the computer but the particular folder I tried to transfer now gives me the following error message when I tried to delete it: "The file or DIRECTORY is corrupted and unreadable." I searched your forums and FOUND a discussion about this problem. A link was given for using the cmd prompt but I did not understand the directions. I searched online some more about deleting a folder with the cmd prompt and came upon these directions in relation to deleting a folder (as compared to only a file):

1. First locate the folder that you would like to delete.
2. Then on the command prompt type:

Code:

rmdir foldername

Since my flash drive is labeled as the "G drive" I typed: G:\>rmdir CORRUPT but this did not WORK (I changed the name of the folder to "corrupt"). I also tried: G:\>rmdir Comedy\George Carlin\corrupt and included the entire name of the file path. Nada. Am I doing this at all correctly? At the Command Prompt, type chkdsk g: /fAwesome!! The folder is gone. Thank you.
So what just happened with that command?http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CHKDSK

Solve : Strange Desktop/Taskbar behavior.?

Hello. I have a strange little anomaly occurring right now. I have posted a screenshot below in CASE it may help. You'll SEE at the lowest left corner of the desktop, the pages minimize there when they're supposed to minimize to the taskbar. Strange behavior. Is there a fix other than System RESTORE? This has happened a few times in the past several months.

What pages are those ? ?
Where is the location of the taskbar ? ?

Who's the CAT ? ?Quote from: patio on May 31, 2011, 04:06:23 AM

Where is the location of the taskbar ? ?

The taskbar is missing, possibly because explorer crashed.

OP: try to start task manager, and use that to run explorer. Have you recently installed any software? It might also be prudent to check for malware (run through the guide here, post the requisite log files on this board, and wait for an expert.

piece of trivia: Without Explorer or an equivalent shell to take control of window management, all windows will minimize as child windows of the desktop (as they would normally without Explorer's interference). The default desktop behaviour is to iconize running programs (this is unchanged from NT 3.1, probably). However, Windows 95/NT4 and later don't actually turn them into icons anymore, instead making them small "folded" windows, as can be seen in the OP's screenshot.

The pages were Google, C:\ and Outlook Express.

The taskbar was hidden below (set to "Auto-hide").

The cat is Mr. Bitchen.

I opened up task manager and stopped the instance of Explorer that was running, then started a new one. That fixed it. Thank you guys for your help. It was really annoying.

even hidden option be checked, or create shortcuts of that folders.

I am not sure if this is what you mean, but if you insert your flash drive and all your folders are changed to shortcuts, then you probably have the shortcut virus. You can use your AV to scan the drive and remove it, but don't use malware bytes, it doesn't detect this virus for some reason. The reason I am telling you about this is because my flash drive got infected with this twice and I removed it manually, so if that is the problem and you NEED manual removal instructions, I can give you some.

Solve : Monitor black Screen?

Sometimes When I'm in the middle of something, the monitor screen shuts down and goes black. But I will not replace it until nit goes up in smoke. Thanks for the reply, Geek. I kinda thought that might be the answer. Up in smoke is what I'm going to wait for also....LOL Are there any RECENT changes you have MADE beforehand such as driver updates or software installed or changed certain settings? Have you done cleaning the PC from dust and reconnecting all cable connections and other components INTERNALLY? There might be one that is not firmly seated.Jason...I've made no recent changes in anything. I do regular inside cleaning and never find much dust, etc. I've checked all my connections (many times) as I've asked this same question in other knowledgeable sites, and always seem to get the same answer. Thanks for your suggestions. Every little bit helps.

Have you tried using ANOTHER monitor or SWAPPING another cable connector to check if the issue is still present? I think you need to check your mother board. Do you installed Graphic card?

Solve : "Open With" window/can't run programs.?

I removed a virus from my PC but, now I get that "Open With" window, and can't run programs. like Firefox etc.At least not without selecting the program I want to open it with each and every time.
I'm running Windows XP Home Edition.

I have tired going to http://www.dougknox.com/xp/file_assoc.htm already and I did the below steps but,no luck.

[Look to the "EXE File Association Fix", and download the .zip file to your computer desktop.. Once there, unzip the file, then DOUBLE click on the "xp_exe_fix.reg" file that is inside, choose "OK/Yes, when it asks "Are you sure?".. Restart the computer.. It should now run those problem programs and Control Panel icons.]

With that solution you are looking at it writes new keys to the registry so you need to be in regedit. Then go file, import, and select the reg file you won't to add. When you have done this don't forget to remove your system restore points and then re enable system restore. This stops the fake antivirus reinstalling if a system restore is done later.

Still same problem?

Fixed
But,when I did restart I got that darn yellow shield but, this time it said:
"Some updates could not be installed"
Security Update for Microsoft XML Core Services 6.0 Service Pack 2 (KB954459)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB956744)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB946648)

Even after I tired to do it twice...Is this also a easy fix Broni?Quote from: Broni on May 30, 2011, 09:03:18 PM

Try to download those updates manually and install them one by one.

As for that 3rd profile, it may be corrupted.
You may want to create new profile.

You may also try to create new topic in malware removal forum.
Possibly, you're not totally clean.

Solve : Can't get internet on cpu??

Answer»

So it means that it worked before and it suddenly stop working and you decided to reinstall windows xp(home/professional?) and still no internet access while there is no flags or marks found under the network adapter/LAN card which is still being recognized?
1.Have you tried checking LAN properties/General tab if the network adapter is shown under connect using and matches under the one in your device manager?
2. Also under TCP/IP properties, make sure they are all check/set to obtain IP,DNS,Private address only.

Edit : See manual for network connections here http://support.gateway.com/s/Manuals/Desktops/8510943.pdfstill you are confusing urself???Quote from: WASHINGMACHINE on May 22, 2011, 11:03:32 PM

All my other computers are connected to the same linksy router and work FINE. When I tried to start up with msn or try lan automatic settings the computer still dosent want to connect. When I checked on device manager there are no errors or question marks.

What happens if you plug the computer directly into the modem?

Have you tried taking the ethernet cable from one of the working computers and plugging it into your wife's computer to rule the cable out as the culprit?

Sorry EVERYONE had to walk away from this one for awhile. I was gonna just MARK it as solved then try again at a later date while being more concise and informed with the problem at hand. Thank you everyone for your time and advise.

Solve : palm pilot professional small font?

Answer»

can any body help regarding the palm pilot professional with small font size, struggle to read the small font on the screen, GGrrrrrrrDunno if this helps...

http://pdf.textfiles.com/manuals/PDA/PalmOne%20PalmPilot%20Professional%20Organizer.pdfhi Dunno, many thanks for the reply, this does not help on the address book info, i have seen the answer on the Palm forum using regedit as follows, i am not that clever about doing this, would be NICE if that was in plain detail for me to do the following, many thanks

Using "regedit" I was able to change the font size larger for use with the Palm Desktop software.

Run "regedit" and export (save) a backup copy for SAFETY
File > Export

Search for "FontSmall"
Edit > Find > Find what > FontSmall

Click on FontSizeGeneral and change the "Value data" to 16

Exit "regedit"

Run Palm Desktop software and ENJOY the NEW legible font size! :smileyhappy:

Notes:
1) The location of the Palm Desktop software on my system using "regedit" is:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\U.S. Robotics\Pilot Desktop\Core
* Your location of the Palm Desktop software may differ.

2) I tested this on monitors using resolutions of 1280 x 1024 and 1024 x 768
The font size is noticeably readable and much, much better

3) You may also change the font family from the default (Arial) to another, such as Verdana, etc.
FontCard (Changes the font family in the side panels)
FontGeneral (Changes the font family for most of the program fonts)

4) Operating System: Windows XP Pro
Palm Desktop v4.1.4

Solve : Recovery disk needed????

Answer»

I don't buy this stuff on eBay, prices are nothing special, quality is questionable, service is marginal. Newegg has everything you need, i.e. $16.00 w/free shipping per GB DDR2 667MHz SDRAM
Hi Everyone,

Tonight while I was reading this forum I was playing with the IBM Thinkpad and I wanted to look at the Bios settings since I couldn't get it to access my router, in the process I hit the Access IBM blue button by mistake and a screen saying Recovery of something like that came up, I thought that since I had formated the drive this was simply the Recovery from after I installed WinXP English version and a downloaded recovery program from the IBM website, this Recovery was something like a backup program. After the Recovery program came on the screen I hit a few buttons and after about 5 minutes a bar started to fill across the screen, a program was being installed, I waited and after about 45 minutes I could see it was preparing the drive and installing the IBM software, it completely installed everything that was originally on the PC, the only problem is everything is in French. Now my problem remains, I have on order 8 Cd's with the Recovery for this PC, how do I get rid of this (apparently hidden and protected) French copy of the IBM software and WinXP Pro or as they say Windows XP Professionnel?

One forum I was reading said the OS can be changed in the Bios, I find that hard to believe, they were telling someone that IBM wanted $35 to convert it in the Bios. Others said to use Fdisk to format and partition the drive and install XP from scratch, problem is this does not get you the IBM software and drivers.

I need advice on using the recovery disks I will get in a few days from IBM, these should be the same as what's on the hidden partition in the existing hard drive. There may be some instructions included with the CDs.

Computers sure are FUN, and full of suprises.

Thanks
God bless
Brandy

I can see anyone living in the USA buying from Newegg, but here in Canada even with a dollar 4 to 5 cents above USD I have paid about 50% higher than their advertised price, it's too bad because I really would like to buy from them, who wouldn't they are honest, fast and reliable but for some reason unknown to me they also cost us more.

Thanks

PS If you know how I can get good prices from Newegg please let me know.

Thanks again,

I did what you mentioned and downloaded all the drivers, Dell really has things well setup, I am impressed. Once they get the service number everything is almost done by itself. As for the yellow question mark all I can see is that it's for a sound system that isn't attached to the computer at this time, it won't go away even when I remove all the cards, even the CD/DVD drives. It's working fine besides the question mark issue. I bought 4 GB of ram, 2 for the Dell and 2 for another old computer we have here, hard to believe but not one set would work in either computers, I bought them on Ebay, wrote the seller and she asked for more info about the computer, I gave it to her but the info matches what I received and what I need. What do you think? She asked to be given a chance to find memory I need, I have no problem with that, I'll wait and let you know what happens, I only paid $16.00 per GB DDR2 533MHz SDRAM.

Well I still haven't received any money back for the dead memory, I am still answering questions, the memory has been returned for about two WEEKS now, I have a few days left to escalate to the next PayPal level, hope I get my money first.

As for the IBM Recovery disks, I received them and was able to change the laptop from French to English, quite easy but a long procedure, the set is made of 8 CDs which take a while to load, then the steps to recover begins, the longest part is the updating of the computer, there are hundreds of updates between 2004 and now, the WHOLE procedure used about 19Gb on the HD. I wouldn't want to have to pay for the time involved in salvaging the ThinkPad, costs for the recovery disks was only $28.00. I am sure the work will be appreciated by the new owner.

God bless
Brandy

Thanks
Brandy
Hi Brandy

With the laptop recovery the IBM recovery software allows you to select the default language for install and for Windows. When you get to the page where it asks for BACKING up your data etc, select on the left custom reinstall and then you get asked language etc. Also with all IBM equipment if you check on the label underneath there will be a number like Type 2668-C53 and then the serial number. Search on this number at lenevo and you will get all the drivers. better always to use the recovery partition or recovery disks when reinstalling a Laptop.
PS you can make recovery Cd's from the recovery partition.

Solve : white and black bars before windows start up?

Answer»

my windows xp crashed this evening. i have reinstalled my windows xp now. but when i boot up my PC, the first screen that i see is a black screen with a bar at the bottom of the screen, which consists of white and black patches(like a zebra crossing). after about 10-12 mins, these black patches get filled up by white, and then the pc starts up normally. Why is this HAPPENING??That is happening because windows is parsing the registry and major system components to check for errors-but 10-12 mins??? How exactly did you reinstall XP?YUP. these white and black bars take 10-12 mins to disappear and then m able to see the first black screen which says windows and the normal booting of the pc starts.

and as FAR as the process of reinstalling windows is concerned, i inserted the windows dvd in the dvd reader, and then formatted the pc via ntfs.

is there any solution to this problem? can the boot up time be reduced somehow?I'm guessing you neglected to re-install all your drivers....
This has to be done anytime Win is re-installed...

MBoard chipset drivers go 1st...yes/ i've installed all my drivers. m just wondering abt the solution to my problem. is there any way to reduce this boot up time??As i said it's either missing drivers...or you may have issues with that HDD...
Any Yellow !!'s in Device Manager ? ?

OK OK, nuff said Try learning some tutorials for PHOTOSHOP and illustrator first for Designing.

Then Dreamweaver to upload the designs. I mean, you can do it directly from dreamweaver but i find it much more challenging if you want to create a very nice design.

Flash is a good TOOL for animated websites, but make sure you learn the basics first.Actually i wouldn't even look at those 2 apps until he has had some basic background in page setup, functionality and layout...

Solve : Set up disk?

My computer did not come with a SET up disk. Is this typical and do I need to have one, where can I get one?By providing first more info. as to what type/brand/model your computer and OS running, a lot of suggestion will be given to you. LAPTOPS nowadays are provided a recovery drive partition. I have a HP pavilion 305w. I think we purchased it in 2004. ...You may also want to check if your Model was shipped with a hidden Recovery partition...
It should, my Compaq does. It shows in Windows as the D-Drive and is labeled "Presario RP".

1. Power on the computer
2. Press F10 repeatedly when you see the HP or Compaq logo.
2. When the recovery screen appears, press Next and then Yes to perform a non-destructive recovery.
3. To perform a destructive recovery, CLICK ADVANCED and then Yes.
4. After the recovery is finished, the computer will reboot.

Solve : My computer will not stop trying to install Windows XP?

Answer»

I tried to install windows XP on my Sony Vaio but when I got to the part where I needed to put in my PRODUCT CODE, I realized I no longer had the package with the codes. At that point I decided to TRY and cancel the installation. I can not get out of the Windows XP installation. I have turned off the computer thinking that it would reboot normally but it GOES directly to the Windows XP installation. I am stuck in a cycle and do not know how to get out.
How can I stop the installation process? You don't have a product key sticker on your computer?I purchased XP a couple of YEARS ago and apparently lost the box. I am most interested in stopping the installation process since I know that I no longer have the product codesThe XP install asks you for the key AFTER it lets you format (erase) the hard drive.

You will need to buy a new copy of XP, or use a free operating system like Linux. I have Windows Vista that I could install if I could figure out how to stop my computer from trying to install Windows XP. I want to be able to stop the Windows XP installation and install Vista. Any ideas on how I can do this?Boot to the Vista CD...and install.

Is it a local printer or a shared printer on a network?
local printerThen no, I'm sorry. I don't know of anything you can do.There are programs out there, none free that I know of, that will WORK with a local printer to require a password before allowing the command to go to the printer. I can't make any RECOMMENDATIONS, since I've never used such software, but they do exist.

Solve : When booting up?

Answer»

Okay, look. Let's try this again. Just open Windows Explorer. Once it's open, type c: in the address bar and press enter. That should take you to the top of C: Drive. Now once you do that, look on the right side. How MANY folders do you see named Windows or Windows.old or Windows.001 or anything like that?

If that doesn't work go to START - RUN and type: %SystemRoot%\explorer.exe /e,c:
Then press ENTERI had to use the second method as there is no address bar after opening Windows Explorer. After going to run and typing %SystemRoot%\explorer.exe /e,c:
It brought up drive C which only show one windows folder.Okay, that's fine. Still not sure why you saw a "countdown" after the repair INSTALL, but if you changed the SETTING to zero in System Properties (my first post in this thread) you should be fine. Sorry for all the confusion. No PROBLEM, sometimes I have to have things SPELLED out exactly to make sure I'm following someones suggestions properly.

Solve : Can history be retrieved?

Answer»

I deleted history and cookies. Can i retrieve the history or can someone else that is professional do it for me?You mean the history of your web surfin?

What browser are you using?

May also depend on what method you used to delete them. In addition to Spoilers question, what browser you're using, how did you delete them? Through the browser's own "CLEAR history" function or through a third-party program or though Windows disk cleanup?I was using dell windows xp professional and the browser was INTERNET explorer and email outlook express. History was deleted using the delete buttons which deleted cookies. I did it myself.
ThanksIf the history files are still in the recycle bin they can be easily restored.
Just hi-lite the files that you WANT restored and select the RESTORE files option.

Solve : Downloads will not complete.?

Answer»

HP 6623 Win 7 Home Prem/SP1
AVG free
PCTools f/w free
CCLeaner
Superantispware
MBAM
IE8

I'm having problems downloading; large attached files in email (less then 10 mb but greater then three) in my gmail. Another example; in a different SECTION of this forum I was tasked to download programs in order to TROUBLESHOOT problems. Some programs would download SMOOTHLY and some either wouldn't at all or would begin downloading and stopp very soon as if it was buffering. In this case I cancelled the download and immedialtly restarted it. The download would continue from whence it last stopped and presume to download about another 7% of the file until it stopped again 7 mb's later and later..... I did this with avg free untill all 180mb's completly d/l.

During different trials of course each problem could change. Once I Sys restored. Once I deleted IE9 and Mozilla FF.

I was comfortable with XP. Then I had to upgrade to Win7.

This PC is relatively new. I thought I could set it up but I'd admitt I may not be that savvy. I spent many OCCASIONS chatting with HP Tech Support . They TOLD me to just perform a recovery. Fine good and dandy NOT. I rather learn how to fix something or figure out where I went wrong before I accept the easy way out. And who says the next time will easier.

So I submit my PC once again to your vast array of subject matter experts. Is HP T/S right? Quote from: tpolcha on May 24, 2011, 04:55:15 PM

Use only one anti virus program. Remove ALL of them. Next, in stall and update the one you like best. Most AV programs do not work well together.

Solve : Computer running slow.....have tried all suggested solutions?

Answer»

Ok I have a seagate hdd so i downloaded the seagate tool for windows and ran some tests. The first test I ran was called a smart check. It says it checks drive self monitoring and reporting. It passed. Then I did a short drive test which it also passed. Then I tried to do a long drive test but after awhile the program would pop uo saying that the test is taking too long and giving me suggestions why, but i could not complete that test.

What now?Looks you have the same drive with the same problem: http://forums.seagate.com/t5/Barracuda-XT-Barracuda-and/ST3250310AS-problem/td-p/25380
If you read all the way to the end, he RMA'd the drive to Seagate & the problem was solved.
Coincidently, I have the same drive in this COMPUTER (#1). It did something very strange about 6 months ago, temps shot up to 50degC for a day or two, then returned to normal and has been fine ever since. I have a spare WD drive, just in case.

I'm getting 80Mb/sec on a SATA 1.5Gbps controller with this http://www.hdtune.com/That is the same one as mine, but I don't know if he has the same problem as me. Mine doesn't take long at all to boot up or start up windows. What I am having a problem with is when I run apps, the apps run really slow, but windows itself isn't really.Quote from: execpro22 on May 16, 2011, 01:53:08 PM

That is the same one as mine...
I said that already.
That fact that it never completes SeaTools Long Drive Test is an indicator of something wrong.
I have the same drive.
I'm getting 80MB/sec on a SATA 1.5Gbps controller with this free version (v2.55) http://www.hdtune.com/download.html

IF there is some problem with your hard drive, RUNNING the test from within Windows is not a good idea.
Burn .iso test to a CD and boot from it.Computer Commando attached is my hd tune measuring test.

That's exactly what it means!
Haven't asked what your computer is because SATA 1.5Gbps is the 1st generation & the slowest, which is what I have. Drive is 3.0Gbps but is backward compatible to 1.5.

No wonder it took so long to run the Long Test & never finished! BTW, if you want to get the ISO file, it's under Seatools for DOS.
http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/support/downloads/seatools

My drive is the Barracuda 7200.10. OTHERS in this series have had a high failure rate: http://www.theinquirer.net/inquirer/news/1050374/seagate-barracuda-7200-drives-failing

Drive has 2 (or 5) year warranty, run Long Test in DOS & it should return error code for RMA. You may not need to to this, since Seagate is aware of the issues. Contact them.

Found this very interesting: http://www.salvagedata.com/hard-drive/seagate-data-recovery/barracudar-720010-hard-drives/
One of the most common problems which are experienced in Seagate Barracuda disk drives (specifically with 7200.7, 7200.8, 7200.9 and 7200.10 series) relate to their read/write head components. Seagate introduced a new special coating technology in this line for the platters intended and designed to better protect the magnetic layers on the platter. The long term effect of this coating was that it caused more problems than the level of protection it offered to the drive. This protective layer tends to flake under certain environmental conditions, causing small BITS of the flaky particles to stick to the read/ write heads which makes reading very unstable. When these particles get embedded in substantial quantities, the disk drive will lose track positioning. This RESULTS in failed read/write ability making user data completely inaccessible. The symptoms of such a failure are clicking, knocking, sweeping sounds:
Click on the arrows in the link to hear the sounds....

Ok I burned the iso, booted it up and ran the tests....

The short drive test passed

The long drive test passed

The acoustic test passed.

Yes and Mo.
Wrong question.
The right question is: "How to fix the problem?"
He can buy a new HDD of 'the same type and about the same size and do a fresh install of the OS. If that does NOT solve the problem, he would he move on to something else.
This is not my personal idea, that is what they teach field technicians..
