So, I am entitled to three wild guess, -Right?

strike two - After changing Desktop Video, forgot a cable.
strike three - Bum install of Linux zapped the hard drive.

Hey, we are in the dark here. Some light please.

Solve : NETWORK CONNECTION IS UNPLUGGED?

Answer»

Here i have installed VM Ware server 1.0.5 in my windows7 operating system.....in tht VM Ware my network connection is unplugged..even my Ethernet card driver is installed properly......my interent is working properly in the windows7...not in the VM Ware....does any one know the solution?hw to rectify?http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1008367raj36562,
Let's see, you are NOT using the VM PRODUCT from Microsoft.
Instead, you are using VM Ware server 1.0.5, a product from another party.

Here is a general reference.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Virtual_PC

But you are asking about a specific product not made by Microsoft. So there may be few here that can help you. The other poster, above, gave you the nest answer available.

But did you not already check their website? And it you bought the product, why did they not help you?

Just curious.
EDIT: Confusion has hit me again. Is this the product?

Sorry for the confusion.
I had found sites that offer ether that product or a similar product and you had to pay for it.

Quote
VMware Server (formerly VMware GSX Server) is a free-of-charge virtualization-software server suite developed and supplied by VMware, Inc.

VMware Server has fewer features than VMware ESX, software available for purchase, but can create, edit, and play virtual machines. It uses a client–server model, allowing remote access to virtual machines, at the cost of some graphical performance (and 3D support). It can run virtual machines CREATED by other VMware products and by Microsoft Virtual PC.

VMware Server can preserve and revert to a single snapshot copy of each separate virtual machine within the VMware Server environment. The software does not have a specific interface for cloning virtual machines, unlike VMware Workstation. Unlike Microsoft Hyper-V, VMware does allow VM memory to be over-committed.

In JANUARY 2010 VMware Server was declared End Of Availability; general support will end on June 30, 2011

Thank you Salmon-Trout.
The free version of the product is still available and now is at version 2.0 and can be download from the Mware site.

There are other free things like it, but not the same.

Solve : I've got problems trying to format my C-drive.?

Answer»

I'm not THAT great with comps so I'll try to sketch the situation as clearly as possible.

Here's what happened: To go for a nice fresh start i wanted to format my C-drive and reïnstall Windows (XP Professional). The reïnstallation went without trouble except for not being formatted. So Windows just reïnstalled without any files deleted (hardly any) or installed programs deleted. Going through SETUP again I see i forgot 1 step: Removing the partition to format. So, trying that I get the message saying something like: "Setup cannot delete this partition since it contains temporary files needed for the installation of Windows." The only option I get at that point is to press 'Enter' to return to the previous screen. (or something of the sort, my system isn't in English). I've only got 1 partition which is my C-drive. (plus the standard 8-mb of unpartitioned space)

So my question: How can I format my C-drive if Setup won't let me?

1 point of interest: If I rightclick on my C-drive within Windows the option 'format' isn't greyed out, which it normally is I believe. Though I've been told that that can cause harm to your system.

Everything can go because I've PUT all the files I need on DVD already.

If there's anything else you want to know, just ask. I'll try to check regularly but since my comp is a bit messed up right now it won't always let me. Any ideas are welcome! Thanks in advance.

(I've posted this question in some other section as well but I believe it fits better here)You need to boot to the XP CD. You cannot format or delete the system partition from within Windows.Oh I forgot to mention. I was booting from the CD yes. But even then it wouldn't let me format my C-drive. So, that's not gonna solve my problem I'm afraid If you are using an original retail XP CD and you are booting to it, you will be offered the opportunity to format (as well as the option to delete & recreate partitions).I have been offered that opportunity. But it still won't let me, which is my problem. If I chose the option to delete (or format) the partition I get the message saying: "Setup can't delete this partition because it contains temporary files required for the installation of Windows." Aslo, it doesn't give me a separate option for formatting. As far as I've seen and read the option of deleting the partition eventually leads to the formatting options (NTFS/FAT32, Fast/Normal, etc.)
I'm sorry, but it does not sound as though you are booting to the cd.I've changed the BIOS to boot from CD first.
I've inserted the CD and restarted.
Then I get the message: "Press any key to boot from CD." And I press a key.
Then Windows Setup starts.
I get 3 options and I pick the one to install Windows.
Then I get a screen which asks me if I want to REPAIR my Windows installation or not. I chose 'Don't repair'. (I want to reïnstall, not repair)
Then I get a screen which shows me the partitions on my computer (which is my C-drive and the unpartitioned space of 8mb) and I get 3 options again.
- I can install Windows on the selected partition
- I can delete the selected partition
- I can leave Setup
Installing Windows on the partition won't work cause my drive won't get formatted then.
Chosing to delete the partitiongives me the message: "Setup can't delete the selected partition because it conains temporary files required for the installation of Windows." The only option i get on that screen is to press 'Enter' to go back to the former screen.

So that's where I'm stuck. I want to format but it won't let me. And yes I AM booting from the CD so please don't ask me that again.Choose the first option (Install windows on the selected partition). You should then be given the option to format first. Do that.I'll try that, I'll come back to you if it doesn't work. Please let us know either way, though you should be fine.I'm afraid that doesn't work either. When I chose to install Windows on the partition I don't get the option to format. It will only remove the former installed Windows and desktop/security settings and gives the possibility that My Documents might be whiped. That's all I get.

...I don't get it, it WORKED fine the LAST time I reïnstalled it. (about 1.5 years ago, but still...) I'm sure you've read this already, but please make sure you are doing everything here: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=313348

Do you have a floppy drive? If so, create a Win 98 boot disk and use Fdisk to delete the partition(s) and then go from there (http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm)Yeah I've read that a dozen times already.
I've got a floppydrive so I will check that out.

I don't have the time for that today though, so I will check it either tomorrow or later this week.
Thanks so far!
I'll let you know if i find anything.

Solve : Applications wont open?

Answer»

Not too LONG ago i got connected to the internet and so the first thing i did was download 2 virus protection and cleanup programs. i cant remember what they were called but i found a post on the web that said they were the BEST ur money dont get you. I regret it now. But now to point. Wheni start up the backround will appear but no icons. After like 5 minutes they appear but nothing works. The start menu will oppen but if i click ANYTHING it just closes. i got into the disc drive and went to properties and did a disk cleanup and after it was done i restarted the computer and it loaded quiker than usual but it wouldnt let me log on or click the turn off power button. And now im stuck. Any suggestions? Can you get into safe mode? If so, can you see your icons and click on stuff in the start menu?

To get into safe mode tap the F8 key repeatedly as the computer is starting up (before windows loads). Choose safe mode from the list of options on the screen.
Backup your files and reinstall. If you can't get in normally, try it in safe mode as JJ 3000 explained.

Probably not what you want to hear, but at this point, it would be easier than trying to repair whatever damage has been done, especially when you can't remember what caused the damage in the first place.

Also, for future reference: Never run two anti-virus products at the same time. They can interfere with each other and be less effective than just having one.

As for cleanup programs: If you're talking registry cleaners, NEVER use them. They CREATE more problems than they fix. You'll find any reputable member here will tell you the same thing.Im trying in safemode now. And it still wont let me log in.I got into safe mode no. And i dont have the disk. The computer was givin to me. Oh and none of the icons are displayed the look like a piece of paper with a window in it.Can you open the control panel in safe mode?see..u hve to do lot of things here..first do basic things..like disk clean uP n defragment n clean start up n check the anti virus n just go to add or remove programs n ther just delete those program u dont wanted...u hve to reduce ur programs..bcz its important to make ur system speed is up....then go to services n stop those service u dont want n disabled tht services....surely u wil get some improvementIgnore the above post.

I can not get on the internet at all.
Well, some drivers are harder to find than others, there are some options for you.

*Try getting the "universal driver xp" pack to find a similar driver that may your lan driver work for you.
* Use AIDA 64 (everest) to try to find the newest driver for your ethernet to work.

Those may not work, if there are no XP drivers for your hardware then you should go back to Windows 7(which has the drivers to make your hardware work properly.).I AGREE with QuantosLet's make this easy. Go to the website of your SYSTEM manufacturer and look for drivers for your system. Are there XP drivers? If not, it was not designed to RUN XP. Period. If there are, download and install them - start with the chipset driver.

Solve : Partition???

Answer»

I was wondering...i already have windows XP installed and running. THERES 37 gigs left on my 80 gig drive. Can i partition say 25 gigs of that free space and install the same version of my XP?? i would like to try tweaking and stuff and see how it affects my gaming?? I just dont want to tweak and mess up my current system settings. If i deleted certain registry files in the "new" installed xp would it delete it from both? Just things like these i would like know?
Thanks
Yes you can do that and no, registry CHANGES in one installation will not effect the other.so if i partition the drive when i reboot my computer will it give me the option or something to pick what one i startup?? And if i end up liking how the new installed one works...can i format the old one and add that space to my new one?? I'm also doing this because i would like to learn how to format and install Windows XP properly from a blank drive...and this would be the easiest way to not mess my current system up?? Testing my installation skills before and see if things work properly before i do it to the entire drive. So each partition will be completely different? i can install different video card drivers and sound drivers?? or will this create problems?Quote from: DPalmz on May 22, 2011, 09:06:05 AM

so if i partition the drive when i reboot my computer will it give me the option or something to pick what one i startup??

Yes

And if i end up liking how the new installed one works...can i format the old one and add that space to my new one??

I wouldn't. I would backup all critical data, format the entire hard drive, and create a new installation on c: drive. It is always best when c: is your system partition.

I'm also doing this because i would like to learn how to format and install Windows XP properly from a blank drive...and this would be the easiest way to not mess my current system up??

Is that a QUESTION? If so, it's A way - the easiest way? I don't know.

Testing my installation skills before and see if things work properly before i do it to the entire drive. So each partition will be completely different? i can install different video card drivers and sound drivers?? or will this create problems?

You HAVE to install new drivers in the new installation (starting with the chipset driver)
aweseome!! Thanks ALLAN!! yeah im gonna install xp on the partition and make sure i do it correctly and once its good...ill do a complete format or everything and copy cat exactly what i did!
if i have an Asus A7N8X-X Mobo i would need the nVidia nForce 2 or something??

I'm looking at my specs of my motherboard and under chipsets they have this...Northbridge: NVIDIA nForce2 400 and Southbridge: NVIDIA nForce2 MCP
do i need to install both of those??
Go to the website of your computer manufacturer and download and install the chipset driver from there. Why not create an image with Macrium REFLECT? If you mess up the WinXP, you can restore the image. You should be doing this, anyway.
http://www.macrium.com/reflectfree.asp
I agree completely. I always suggest creating an image before performing any disk level operation. Also consider since it's XP just setting up a new Hardware Profile...
It's selectable at bootup and if your fiddling around goes South it will not affect your original profile and can be deleted to start over...

Just a thought...

Solve : .Net 4 causing problems with running of pgm.?

Answer»

Ok probably should have covered this question at the front end, but here we go
1. Bought a little pgm
wouldn't run got ERROR msg

They eventually responded and said I needed the .net 4 framework.
Net 4 said I needed a WIC file/pgm, whatever, found here

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyId=8E011506-6307-445B-B950-215DEF45DDD8&displaylang=en#AffinityDownloads

When I saw this page and instructions at bottom didn't know which to DOWNLOAD, SOUNDED like there was suppose to be a download button for the whole package. So I DOWNLOADED the .esn one for English I'm guessing. Anyway was able to install .Net 4 . Now I get another error msg.

Wondering do I need Net 2 or other or diff wic package? I would insert the images of both error msgs. if I could FIGURE out how. Anyway am including them as attachments.

Very confusing.

Solve : Computer which I cannot reformat?

Answer»

I have a computer which would reboot two or three times a night. I updated the drivers as googled answer SUGGESTED, started blue screening once a night. Decided to reinstall XP pro. would blue screen at time when computer going to format disc.
I ran diagnostic programme on my hard drive all ok. I took out RAM 512 one at a time still no improvement.

Now Reinstall gets to when asked Install XP Repair XP or Exit If I choose Install or Repair all I GET is this at the bottom of screen

EXAMINING 152626 MB disc O at id O or bus O or si 3112r.

Can anyone HELP me to get this computer restarted by reinstalling XP Pro

Thank youWhat diagnostics did you run on that HDD ? ?I have a Western Digital HD and I went to their website and used theirs LIGHTNING something sorry I for got the name

HughMy Age-Old solution to that, would be to BOOT up the PC with my DOS utilities disk, (floppy, CD or Flash Drive) and run the dos FDISK command and remove the existing partitions so none are listed.
Then create a NEW partition or preferably two of them.

Then Reboot
then format each partition with the DOS Format.com command. That will not only format every sector on the drive, but will also verify the integrity of each one and block out any bad sectors.

When that's done, the disk will be ready to receive a new OS.
Oh, by the way, I always run XP on the Dos formatted FAT-32 hard drive.
It will run faster and give you absolute control over every file on the disk,
from a DOS boot disk. (Sorry, I'm just an old control freak!)

Problems on the disk are probably why XP won't load. A bad stick of ram will cause that too.

Good Luck,
Shadow Thank you
I tried taking out one stick of ram at a time (2x512) but it made no difference.
Thanks for the advise I will make up with a dos utilities disc.

Also could it possibly be the router causing this fault as I have three PCs working
from it one no problem at all this one I am posting for the other reboots for no reason occasionally,
this is how the first one started Router is a D-Link DSL-504G

Thank you

HughNo...
A router will not cause this issue.Try another hard drive.

Solve : 2 computer icons in task bar - suspicious??

Answer»

When I connect to the internet I get a variety of icons in the task bar: SOMETIMES I get a single computer icon, sometimes I get a single computer icon at first and then a minute later I get a double computer icon alongside the single computer icon, and sometimes I get 2 double computer icons alongside each other. Can anyone say why?
I am concerned that I have a virus which logs keystrokes and transmits them elsewhere as there is always more packets sent than received on my machine. Is the double computer icon perhaps the sign of another port being used by a virus?
And how do I get the extra double computer icon to cease? If I disable it, I lose my connection.Do you mean computer icons on the notification area on the down right side of your monitor? Depending on how many network adapters installed on your PC, that indicates the computer icon present or showing the status of your LAN adapter. You could also post your computer model/brand or run a free software to identify what or how many devices installed on your PC. Yes, the bottom rh corner shows various icons including the blue computer icon(s) when connected to the net. I have 2 ways of connecting on this machine - either through an ethernet cable to one router on one phone line with one ISP or wirelessly to a different router on a different phone line with a different ISP.
Today I started with the wireless connection and got one single computer icon only when connected - excellent, I'm sure the level of packets sent is as it should be with this.
Now I'm connected via the ethernet cable and have one double computer icon showing - again excellent but why is this a double computer icon?
And why do I sometimes get the single computer icon followed after a short while by an extra double computer icon, or the double computer icon followed after a short while by an extra double computer icon?
I honestly believe that when 2 icons appear, the machine is sending information to a hacker. Is this the case?No ...it's not the case.

If you are concerned about outbound traffic then install a Firewall app that logs it so you can see what's up...

The icons are standard Windows icons and are there to show your connection is working...

If you suspect a keylogger that is a completely different issue and there are programs you can run to sniff them out...if in fact there is 1 present on your machine. Thanks for that but there is no doubt that when I have 2 double computer icons showing my machine is constantly sending packets of information, even when I have no web pages open. That worries me. Is there any program you could suggest for checking my machine for a keylogger virus?

The other thing is why do I get the variety of icons when I connect to the net? i.e. (a) a single computer icon, or (b) a double computer icon, or (c) a single plus a double computer icon or (d) 2 double computer icons ? What do they all mean and why does it vary? The double, single computer icon is your network status. I believe you have a desktop with a LAN and a WLAN card and is connected on a 4 port wireless router. You should also have an antivirus installed and atleast a Windows firewall enabled. I dont get on why you are alarm for the packets sent, received. Where are you getting your information? There is a Virus and Spyware section available on this forum. Do you want to check your computer for any keylogger virus? The machine is a desktop with an ethernet connection to one router and a wireless connection to another router. I wonder if the single computer icon is for the ethernet connection and the double computer icon is for the wireless connection?
Recntly I have not been getting the extra double computer icon after the initial icon. The only thing that's changed is that I am no longer using the Outpost firewall - it has ceased to work, constantly needing keys which it constantly rejected when entered. Could it be that Outpost was the cause of the extra icon? Seems unlikely.
Re where I get the information as regards packets sent, this appears when you right click the icon and choose Status - you then see the activity as regards packets sent and received.
When I have one computer icon only, the packets sent looks sensible - there is no activity right now for example and the total packets sent is 4435 after having been connected for 2 hours. However when the extra double computer icon appears the packets being sent is constant and huge - even though I am doing nothing on the machine, it will be sending packets all the time, reaching 60,000 in a short time and going higher still.
So why is this? And why do I seem to have only the one computer icon now?Looking at mine, when I'm "idle" (not downloading/uploading anything or doing anything with the network) my packets still increase at a rate of about 1000 a second.

A program you can use to view open connections is TCPView. Sysinternals used to have a program called TDIMon that would actually allow you to see the programs responsible for packets, but I can't seem to get it working and the only downloads for it are mirrored FTP sites.

In either case, nowadays for the most part if you are on a website there is still some extended communications between your machine and the host; the web is no longer just a bunch of static web pages, and many websites use Dynamic HTML and especailly AJAX which may periodically request information from the server; for example Hotmail's inbox will stay relatively up to date even if you don't refresh. Also, browser addons like forecastfox and flagfox, WOT, and so forth will create additional connections and more traffic as well.

The main "take-away" from this should be that the status numbers are absolutely meaningless. unless they are going up by millions when you have absolutely no programs open, there really isn't anything to worry about, and if that were the case you would have other problems (slow network). Also, to my understanding wireless utilities often perform constant checks to make sure the wireless connection and access point are still there.

Also, I might add that keyloggers don't work by constantly sending data across the wire- and even if they did, are you really typing enough to quantify thousands of packets a second? The reason they don't is simple- it's too easy to detect. Usually a keylogger will log keys and other info to a hidden file (sometimes hidden by a rootkit) and at intervals it will upload that file to a remote site, or sometimes the keylogger has backdoor capabilities that can allow the writer to access your machine and copy said file as well as do other stuff. Again, though, if that was the case, you would have more serious problems and symptoms then you do now. Thanks for this - it is helpful. I do accept that there are always some packets being sent and received but it's when this is a constant stream with no web page loaded that I'm worried. This only happens when there are 2 computer icons showing and remember that the second icon arrives 30 secs after the first - it's like I've connected to the net and then a further connection is made which I have no control over. Given that this does not happen always, could this be the keylogger periodically uploading the rootkit file?

I have done a HijackThis scan and this lists the following item:

O23 - Service: Remote Packet Capture Protocol v.0 (experimental) (rpcapd) - CACE Technologies, Inc. - C:\Program Files\WinPcap\rpcapd.exe

I have searched for advice on the net and some say this is OK and some say it's a keylogger. Either way it will not respond to an HJT fix. Can anyone advise me as regards this?

Re symptoms, my machine is very unstable right now. I did pick up a virus this week - it was the "XP Total Support" scam which keeps popping messages up (same as System Tool). (I love the way my AV and Firewall always let these things straight through!) I found 2 files responsible and managed to delete them. One was called ogo.exe and was a system file. Deleting it has ruined my Desktop - none of the icons open anything any more, just say "not recognised" or ask me which propgram I wish to open the item with. Same with the Start menu - disaster. I am wondering whether carrying out a system restore might help here?

And just to round off a great week, I find that my new laptop with Windows 7 WILL NOT OPEN a number of programs that have always run on previous versions of Windows - they are essential to me. Thanks again Microsoft! If I ever get a chance to burn your HQ to the ground......Quote from: broigel on May 20, 2011, 06:00:28 AM

I don't think so. a keylogger would use your existing connection, it would be rather silly to create a new "pretend" connection and send data that way.

I have winPCap installed. A number of network tools and utilities take advantage of it. Netstumbler, Wireshark, Airsnort, etc. You can uninstall it via Add/Remove, or disable the RDP windows service "properly" in services.msc.

you could try the EXE association fix here. It might be a good idea to run through the guide here and post a thread in this forum. More likely than not there is still some lingering piece of malware installed, and at the very least I imagine the malware experts should have some experience restoring functionality after an infection as well.

Which Programs? I'm running Windows 7 64-bit and I've yet to find any Windows program that I cannot run as a result. I cannot run 16-bit applications but that's a given. I am of course not invalidating your point, but I feel that there are most likely alternatives to the programs in question, either that or they are incredibly niche tools or are "privately developed" in some fashion. In either case, Windows/MS's backwards compatibility is leaps and bounds ahead of any other OS vendor. Just try running a Mac classic app unmodified on OSX or installing a Linux package from 1998 and you'll find a lot of dead-ends. on 32-bit Windows 7 you can still install Word 2 for Windows 3.1! That said there are some important points to be made:

-Microsoft literally delays the release of new Operating System versions until a undisclosed set of Applications will run on it unmodified; this list is KNOWN to include quite a number of very popular programs from a variety of vendors.

Some of the applications on that list might not even be actively developed, and oftentimes the developer has either gone out of business or doesn't care anyway (after all, they have their customers money). In this case, MS literally fixes the problem themselves from within windows using AppCompat patches; these basically tell windows to "act like" an older version of windows in certain ways. It's a common misunderstanding to think that the AppCompat patches are the same as using "compatibility mode" But it's not quite the same; AppCompat patches are actually stored in a database on at the very least Windows XP,Vista, and 7, and the various API routines behave according to the values in this database if the calling program is part of it; almost every time they fix a known issue in a function they need to add a appcompat hack so that they can force the routine to act the way it did before, because some application may have implemented a workaround for the bug or something. Most application compatibility problems occur as a result of either bugfixes in Windows or better parameter checking in windows, or more often the application relies on wholly undocumented behaviour. Naturally, though- if somebody installs/uses a new version of Windows and their older applications don't work, they blame the new Operating System, even though often times the application ever working on the "original" OS was a total fluke to BEGIN with. It is because of this that they actually go out of their way to get these badly programmed or out of date applications running. The interesting thing is that one Microsoft blogger who occasionally writes about this type of stuff (Raymond Chen) is always inundated with comments to the accord of "you should break every application like this every time" So if they got their way very few applications would work properly with a new OS release at all! Thanks again, and I will try the EXE association fix you gave the link for. If it can help me get back to some normality that would be great.

Re the WinPcap thing, that may well have come through Wireshark which I will try to remove, although right now Contol Panel-Add/Remove programs does not work.

And re the programs not working on Windows 7, the main one is an old version of Quattro Pro which I have been using for years. In my opinion it is way better than Excel - easier to use, not at all cumbersome, more functionality, better in every way. I have 90% of my work files on Quattro Pro, have never had to "upgrade" it because it is perfect the way it is, and I do not want to lose it.

I did check and found Windows 7 has an "XP Mode" to it but I couldn't download it and did see a note saying it was only available on a Windows 7 Professional version, which I don't have. I am seriously considering wiping Windows 7 and replacing with XP just to keep my Quattro Pro.

I suppose I have a bit of a beef about all this "upgrading" - I hate it. I would happily still be on Windows 95 if the change hadn't been forced on me and I grudge Microsoft re-vamping Windows every 2 years just to get us all to buy it again. There is no benefit for the user here - just more cash into MS coffers.Quote from: broigel on May 20, 2011, 09:37:31 AM

Do you have a Win XP disc that could be used for a legitimate installation of Win XP? If so, you could run it as a virtual machine (VM) by installing a VM client such as VMware Player and then installing Windows XP within VMware Player. This would allow you to run Win XP as a "guest" OS inside of Windows 7.

Alternatively, if this fits in your budget, upgrade Win 7 to the Pro version so that you can run the Win XP mode.

You might also try the free OpenOffice and see whether its spreadsheet component, called Calc, will recognize your Quattro Pro files and whether you might find Calc a satisfactory solution.

Actually, Win XP was released for retail sale on October 25, 2001 and will continue to be supported with security-related updates, or what's called Extended Support, by Microsoft until 08/04/2014. That's an exceptionally long run for an OS.I have no idea how this post got so long...

It might not even really be related to your problem, but the "Open With" dialog when trying to run programs often means the EXE association is broken. It could also be that the shortcut (.lnk files) association is broken as well, I believe there is a fix on that site for those as well.

Because of the "Open With" thing I presume?

Although you don't state it outright, I'm assuming that this is probably Quattro Pro 6; this was released before Windows 95 was, if I recall. I don't know if it was a 32-bit (actual windows 95 program) or 16-bit, though. Also, to my understanding that version seems to be the last version that was well-regarded by Quattro Pro users (since after that Quattro was sold by Borland to Novell). If it is 16-bit and you are using a 64-bit version of windows, that would be the problem (I believe the error is something to the effect of "this file is not compatible with the version of Windows you're running.") in which case you would need to use a VM to run the program (XP mode would probably work as well).

Certainly an Option, and I'm sure we can help you do that as well (as long as you have an XP disk) the only tricky part would be finding the drivers but for the most part it shouldn't be too bad. I'm sure there will be some naysayers blibber-blabbering about not replacing Win7 with XP because it's outdated, but if it get's the job done I don't see where they are coming from.

I can understand where you are coming from, but consider that even Windows 95 was an upgrade from windows 3.1 which was an upgrade (well, user experience wise) from DOS, and there were a number of versions and upgrades to DOS as well. In that sense a lot of people who "hate upgrading" really are just nostalgic for a certain time period whose software they have fond memories of. Truthfully speaking though Windows 95 had a of issues. This isn't to say it was a bad operating system, but rather that your pining for "the good old days" is sort of looking on the past with rose-tinted glasses; And, let's be honest here- was the change really forced on you? There was nothing stopping you from using your good old Reliable Windows 95 machine all the way up to today; the issue of "being forced" is more that newer software (and internet stuff) only works on newer Operating Systems for the most part. I know several people who are happily using Firefox 3 (not pretty trying to get that working) on a Windows 95 machine and have no problems doing their everyday computing tasks and using their Windows 95 applications and whatnot; perhaps you weren't really "forced" as much as you were "pressured" and there certainly is a lot of pressure for people to upgrade; you see it all the time, even on this forum; but newer isn't necessarily better, especially since even if the new program is functionally superior to the old one there is still the "cost" of relearning how to do basic stuff in the new program, so it's not always worth the time.

While I understand your sentiment:
Windows 3.1: 1992
Windows 95: 1995
Windows 98: 1998
Windows ME/2000: 2000
Windows XP: 2001
Windows Vista:2006
Windows 7: 2009

the only windows release interval that is 2 years would be between windows 98 and windows ME and ME to XP. It's hardly every two years, though. Additionally it's important to realize that if they stopped updating windows they would be overtaken. That may sound like a good thing, but considering none of their competitors seem to really care about application compatibility at all the results would be less than stellar.

Quote
There is no benefit for the user here - just more cash into MS coffers.

Isn't there? Let's analyse.

Windows 3.1 to Windows 95:

What did the user gain:

A far more stable system, better memory management, better CPU utilization (32/16-bit hybrid architecture, taking advantage of newer processors at the time), better built in utilities (things like resource monitor), and the OS itself replaced DOS for all intents and purposes, meaning that computers were more accessible to users with less experience. (being dropped with a bar that says start, it's a lot more intuitive then being dropped at a commandline saying "C:\>".

Windows 95 to Windows 98/SE

Ok, this could be debatable, particularly since it's kind of the center of a lot of hatred. Windows 98 seems a lot more like a "patch" over windows 95, in that you could install the Active Desktop components into windows 95 and get most of the same look at feel. Aside from that though it did add moer "official" USB support to windows, meaning that the user gained since they could now use USB peripherals (which you cannot do with Windows 95 without a lot of patches and tweaks and hacks, and even then it barely works). Plug & Play support was a lot better, and more automatic, requiring little to no intervention with IRQs and DIP switches and whatnot (Windows 95 itself somewhat mitigated this, but windows 98 practically eliminated it.

Windows 98 to XP:

Windows XP marked a rather major shift, in that the Consumer Operating systems (Windows 9x) were "merged" with the workstation Operating Systems (Windows NT/2000) to create a single codebase/product for both. What did this give the user?

Greatly enhanced "power" over the system. Since NT was a true Operating system that used a microkernel rather then the monolithic DOS-based kernel from 9x, the system was far more stable and it was more difficult to corrupt files, since it had built in support for things like permissions, which had to essentially be hacked into Windows 9x. It also greatly improved hardware support over Windows 98, since Windows XP (and windows 2000) recognized a wider range of "generic" USB devices. For example without hacking you cannot simply plug in any old USB drive and use it on a windows 98 machine, but you can with a Windows XP machine. The plug and play support was even more enhanced over windows 98; with windows 98 sometimes unplugging a in-use USB drive would cause not only data loss but a blue screen; with XP, while you may get data loss if the drive is in use, you will get a balloon tip basically saying as such. The actual UI improvements are and were a point of contention, but there is no doubt that the system took greater advantage of the hardware capabilities available at the time; using Alpha blending directly on the desktop rather then as a feature usually only found in games allowed business users to experience the enhanced graphical capabilities of what was a average PC at the time. Another important consideration is that XP greatly improved support for user profiles compared to earlier versions of windows, which sort of kind of pretended there was a concept of a profile but didn't always respect it, and password protection on them was weak, there was no support for actually partitioning the various users from each other (any user could view any other users documents, for example). Also fast user switching, which could let Billy keep his Dinosaur game open while Dad checks his business E-mail or whatever. Now warranted a lot of what fast-user switching could do can be "kludged" in previous operating systems but what makes it interesting is that Billy's dinosaur game is running in Billy's account and Dad's browser E-mail is running in his account; they are in effect separated. Also, Dad could keep the browser open and switch back to Billy's account; with an older Windows OS billy might accidentally Alt-Tab or do something like that to the browser and start sending E-mails or messing around by ACCIDENT with Dad's inbox; with Fast user switching the accounts are running but still require a password to switch to. The gains in this regard are there but are far more tangible to business users, which are certainly a type of user.

From XP to Vista- again, there is a lot of hate for Vista. But In my opinion, moving from XP to Vista gave the user the single greatest improvement in any version of Windows. To explain- no doubt you are well aware of the constant threat of malware on windows PCs. The main reason that this was such a huge problem is that in windows 9x any user had administrator access, and in XP while it was based on the NT system, the "defaults" were to make the user have full admin access. Some say "but that makes sense, it's my computer, I should be an admin". Yes- but this is missing the point. See, using the Administrator account has less to do with your own abilities and more to do with the abilities of the programs you are running. Trojan horses being a common delivery method are basically "installers" that the victim believes to be one thing but that also install some malware or other questionable software. With XP and earlier on their default settings, these programs could do as they pleased, and there would be no way to know. With Vista, however, it greatly improved on a concept possible in XP, called "Limited User Account". With XP you could create a limited user account. in many ways these accounts were "immune" to malware; the drive-by download or malicious activeX control or whatever would load, but it would be running under the Limited User account which in and of itself isn't able to change any settings, so the malware couldn't Install" itself and the infection would not be successful. The problem and the reason this wasn't very well used was because it was a non-default option, took time to set up, and more importantly if you wanted to install software or perform administrative tasks you either had to log out and back in as the admin or "fast user switch" to the admin account, which was a major hassle and prevented a lot of people from trying the technique.

Windows Vista's answer to this was UAC (User Account Control). In many ways it's similar to the idea of fast user switching from windows XP; the difference is that the switch can be made "automatically" when you need more permissions. This, combined with the default behaviour that causes all higher-level permissions to be stripped from all users meant that any administrative task would require the use of the admin account. Some argue that most people just click OK, but this is not a very good argument in favour of no UAC at all, since without UAC (or in earlier windows versions) there is simply no prompt at all. In the case of a trojan horse, for example, the windows XP machine is compromised by a infected version of the installer to Billy's Dinosaur game. However, upon trying to install the game on Vista Billy will require administrative permissions. Dad might just allow it after all (it is an installer) but with a little research he might find that the game is supposed to be able to install as a Limited user as well, meaning that it wasn't the game that required permission but rather some sort of malicious installer. Additionally such installers would need to specifically request admin access; if they simply try to infect the machine no prompt appears and they are simply denied access. Since that is how most trojans worked (at least at the time) this proved and often still proves to be an effective method of preventing the sort of malicious installations that even safe browsing couldn't prevent previously, such as drive-by trojan downloads and the like.

Windows Vista to Windows 7 was more a image change than anything. A Lot of people who slung on the hate for Vista love Windows 7, but really they are nearly the same; the benefits from Windows Vista to 7 can be summarized as some tweaks to the UAC concept, meaning that there are fewer prompts in some cases and therefore they have more "meaning" to the user, which helps prevent the "click Allow constantly" problem that people seem to be able to pull out of nowhere. Additionally they added a bunch of UI enhancements in the form of easier mouse-only window management, improvements to things like Aero Peek, which is basically an extension of the basic Tooltip that windows 95 would show for a taskbar button (it's difficult to really claim that the tooltip on a Taskbar button is "more useful" then having a small thumbnail of what the window contains).

Now, it's important to understand that older versions of windows aren't "inferior" to newer versions by any stretch; after all, most of the various improvements I have thus far outlined are possible because the average "oomph factor" of the PC when each OS was released allowed for it. For example there wouldn't really be a feasible way to add a feature to windows 95 similar to Aero Peek, simply because it would cause a lot of compatibility problems given the way the display and bitmap drawing was handled. Aero and Aero Glass are more an extension of the upward climb that each windows version performs where it tries to take advantage of the hardware; if you have a Super speedy graphics card (and any modern PC does) then it's pretty wasteful to just use it viewing 2-D images; Aero Peek, while it's actual UI improvements are a subject of opinion, tries to take advantage of the power of the average PC's GPU to add more visual effects and try to "streamline" the UI; many seem to think this is a rapid departure from older windows version, this is nonsense; after all, Windows 9 Plus and later Windows 98 featured Animated menus and window minimize/maximize/restore animations, and it's hard to say there is a good reason to let a perfectly good GPU sit idle as windows does all the pixel pushing and just uses the GPU to draw bitmaps.

Lastly, Most people receive their copy of windows free with a new PC, rather than purchasing an upgrade, arguably a small PORTION of what the manufacturer sells the machine for is for the OS license but considering the alternative would be that they pay the same amount for a license for a previous version I can't really see any real justification for your statement that each new version is basically only to fill Microsoft coffers. Of course Microsoft is a company, big surprise there, and all companies are after making a profit rather then going under- also no surprise. And they certainly are doing very well business wise, but to suggest that the only reason that they release new versions of the OS is to make a profit- well of course that is why, for one thing- and for 2 in order for a product to be profitable it needs to improve the older version, otherwise nobody will buy it, so while Microsoft is in fact creating new versions of their software purely for profit, in order to do that effectively they need to make that software better than the previous version, thus the user benefit.

Solve : Display Driver Stopped Responding Nv4_disp?

Answer»

Hello,
I am new to this forum and am a novice with computers at best. I just started to have a problem with "Display Driver Stopped Responding". I have windows xp service pack 2. GeForce 7600 gt. When I open a page on the internet that has alot of things going on the cpu freezes, SCREEN goes black, i hear a beep inside the cpu, then it all goes back to normal then freezes again and again. This also happens if i try to run avg, or other programs. I guess my question is what is happening? Is it a busted graphics card and if so can i pop in my old 5600 geforce to see if it works? I read about uninstalling the driver then reinstalling but am nervious about trying that. I even read somewhere that maybe my geforce card is stuck in a LOOP? I am not sure where to start or what to do. Any ADVICE would be great. Err just tried to turn cpu on for system specs but the monitor didnt show anything. Rebooted and display worked but still have freeze problems.
Cpu specs
Intell core 2 cpu 6300 1,8 ghz
memory ddr2 2048mbytes
chipset intel p965/g965

Cpu worked fine yesterday.
Thank youFirst of all, check the temperature of the card. It's possible it is overheating.

If there are no heat issues, uninstall then reinstall the driver. Thanks for the response quaxo. Got home from WORK and was going to try what you recomended but after 3 attempts the monitor never came up so I just shut the cpu down. I took out the graphics card Geforce 7600 gt and saw that some of the nodes (not sure what they are called, the fat cylinder things sticking out) had opened up or cracked open. It stands to figure that the card is toast. I do have another question though. I tried to pop in my old 5600 geforce but it didnt place right, so I am wondering should i just try and find the same graphics card or will any upgraded geforce card fit in slot. Sorry, tinkering inside or with my cpu is a bit confusing to me so i apologize if some of my QUESTIONS are rudimentary.
Thank you. Those are capacitors...and you're correct they are the source of the problem...

Any PCIexpress card in your budget will work fine as a replacement...

The other card is probably an AGP....older slot type.

I would however check all the MBoard capacitors as well before you finish re-assembling everything...

Good Luck.Sweets, so far so good. Checked motherboard and it looks good. Got a GeForce 8600 GS which fits perfect, installed it with the software and cpu works fine for now. Thank you all for the info. By the way patio cool saying, I havent heard that before and I doubt it is a coincidence. Thank you all again.Never swap out a video card on acid...

Solve : Problems with printer duplicating itself?

Answer»

I have an HP computer with XP home. I have an HP F2110 all in one printer. Every so often I see on my computer SCREEN the printer being installed like it is a new piece of hardware. When this happens I look in the control panel at the printers and there will be a printer icon but it will printer #2. I have seen as many as 5 printers. I delete all of the printers but one. I go into services to HP device discovery and stop this service. Everything will be alright for a few days. Then the process starts again. I look at the services and HP device discovery is started again. Does anyone know how to CORRECT this problem?HP finally come out with a patch (fix) for this problem. I FOUND it on their website. I am SURE glad because I have had this problem for 2 years.Chiming in a bit late, but glad you found a solution. I had the same thing with my HP, except I have 4 printers. It kept dupliucating them all on boot or when one was unplugged and PLUGGED back in. Annoying that was.

Solve : Monitor or Video Card?

Answer»

I've got a problem that I can't seem to pinpoint. When XP boots, sometimes the background images only loads part way with all the icons and taskbar working. I've also noticed that when I minimize a window, it drains slowly but the animation is quick. I took out all the effects and in the advanced tab on system properties, I set the video to performance which unchecks all the fancy animation. Just can't get a handle on the problem and I don't want to do part SWAPPING due to funding. Thanks in advance.Try different monitor and you'll know.If I had another monitor, I'd do just that. ThanksWell, in that case, it's not going to be easy to find out.

Do you have same issue, if you boot to Safe Mode?

Is this dedicated video card, or on-board video chip?

Desktop, or laptop?Sometimes I'm so smart I'm stupid. It's a desktop with no onboard video so it's a card (express 16 with VGA and Digital ports). Clean install of XP with all current drivers with no problems in Device Manager. As for safe mode, the background isn't loaded so I have no idea how to check there. But I get full windows if I open My Computer and on shut down and startup. Quote

But I get full windows if I open My Computer and on shut down and startup
Say again? From a cold start, I get a full window of the splash page and welcome screen. On shut down or reboot, I get a full page display of "Windows is shutting down". Again, I'm just having trouble with the background loading (even when refreshed) and when I minimize an explorer window (internet explorer windows also) the window drains very slowly.
Do you use any custom theme, or just natural Windows theme?

Quote
when I minimize an explorer window (internet explorer windows also) the window drains very slowly.
See, if same thing happens in Safe Mode.

Also, try this test...

Go Start>Run (Start Search in Vista), type in:
msconfig
Click OK (hit Enter in Vista).

Click on Startup tab.
Click Disable all
IMPORTANT! In case of laptop, make sure, you do NOT disable any keyboard, or touchpad entries.

Click Services tab.
Put checkmark in Hide all Microsoft services
Click Disable all.

Click OK.
Restart computer in Normal Mode.

NOTE. If you use different firewall, than Windows firewall, turn Windows firewall on, just for this test, since your regular firewall won't be running.
If you use Windows firewall, you're fine.

Same problem?

I would try several things......

FIRST try a different screen resolution mode. The current setting may not be right for the monitor.

Then I'd set the color depth to 16m instead of the customary 32m.
Less color resolution lets the screen refresh quicker.

I'd also check to see if there are newer video drivers than what are currently installed.

In one case, on my own PC, where the video was going nutzo, I took the video card out and
washed the video ram, with Denatured Alcohol and an old tooth brush. After drying, I put that
video card back in and it's been running FLAWLESSLY ever since. That was over five years ago.

There's an answer,,,,,, you just need to KEEP looking till you find it.

Good Luck,
Shadow

Solve : How to make new windows open under existing windows??

Answer»

I'm running XP on my WORK computer. It's an old PC, has been handed from employee to employee over the YEARS, it's got a lot of unfortunately heavy-duty and necessary programs working. Needless to say, it's not the quickest computer around.

I've gotten used to the slow. I multitask like my life depends on it (and my sanity DOES depend on it). I generally have anywhere from two to eight programs running at a time.

My problem is this: When I launch a program (particularly a Office Suite program), I want to go back to what I was doing in another window while I wait it to launch. But the new program ALWAYS tries to become top priority on my monitor. If I'm launching Word and go back to an email window to keep writing my email while I wait for the document to load, I end up typing my email into my document because Word has taken precedence. I have to click back to the original program over and over again while Word continues to launch. It's infuriating.

Is it possible to direct all newly launching programs to open behind all other open windows?No...

This is how Windows works.
Open apps in the order you need to use them.

Or you could go to each app and SET it to "open minimised".....NOTE...not all apps will have this option. If you can find a copy of TweakUI there's a setting to keep apps from stealing focus. That may or may not work when opening new apps.Quote from: patio on May 18, 2011, 01:35:24 PM

Thank you for the reply. Regarding the bold, this is a matter of programs becoming necessary as my day goes on. It's not possible to predict needing them ahead of time, unless I open everything I ever use at the outset of my day-- which would make things run EVEN slower.

I'll look for the "Open Minimized" option in the most irritating programs.

Thanks again. Quote from: Allan on May 18, 2011, 01:38:23 PM

Did the drive ever work properly? How old is the drive?

I think Salmon is right though. The drive is probably dead. Dead writers can still read FINE as a different part of the drive conducts the actually writing. It's likely not able to detect the media in the drive or is detecting it INCORRECTLY.

Windows Explorer opening in My Documents from Accessories and then opens in My Computer using the Windows icon key + e on my keyboard?

This is normal.
OK. Is it just a DEFAULT configuration? I would think Explorer would display itself as it's own program...like Internet Explorer. They each have a definitive TITLE. (i.e.) I have Stieinfeld pickles in the 'fridge. One is kosher and one is not; though they bear the same name. Quote from: fartbubble on May 18, 2011, 12:21:09 AM
OK. Is it just a default configuration?

Yes. You can alter it, details here:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307856

You can also change where it opens and with what configuration it opens by using the Run box and the switches detailed in that article.

Quote

I'm not sure what you mean by this. Internet Explorer has a home page which you can change, too.

I don't really think we need to pursue this particular branch of the thread, which has developed a nature I have alluded to above.
Agreed... I'll follow the link. Thanks. It seems my interpretation of Explorer vs. Internet Explorer has been a misconception.Quote from: fartbubble on May 17, 2011, 11:16:04 PM
why is Windows Explorer opening in My Documents from Accessories and then opens in My Computer using the Windows icon key + e on my keyboard?

To explain this a bit more clearly...

The shortcut in Windows Start Menu (Accessories) for Windows Explorer is set so that it points to the user's “My Documents” (in Windows XP or earlier) or “Documents” (in Windows Vista) in the logged on user home directory. This is because Microsoft envisaged that most users will make use of the folder to manage their documents and files, thus having Windows Explorer opening in My Documents by default is convenient for most users. You can alter the default folder & view by editing the shortcut target.

However, because not everybody will want to go to My Documents, an alternative destination, My Computer, is provided and is available by pressing the Windows key then the E key. This one is not so easily editable - it seems to be hard coded.

To open Explorer in other folders or locations and to influence behaviour, e.g. what sidebar if any is shown, see the article I linked to, and also this one

http://www.mydigitallife.info/how-to-change-windows-explorer-default-folder/

... and literally hundreds more which are only a Google search away.

Solve : video card malfunctioned in the middle of OS restore...?

Answer»

Had to do a restore to factory condition on my HP Pavillion a810n desktop due to viruses. The system had loaded Windows files and was to the point of setting Windows up (I could hear the music start to PLAY) when things froze and the the MONITOR screen went DARK. I could STILL hear the music playing as if Windows was waiting for me to begin setting it up, but I could not see it because the screen was dark.

I checked that the cables & video card were well-seated, then I CONNECTED the problem pc up to another monitor and the screen was dark there also. It appears the video card has malfunctioned. I took video card out of pc, cleaned it with air, & noticed one side was so dirty not even air was removing the dust. Looks like the dust is so caked on it would need a thorough scrubbing, which can't be done. I reinstalled the video card in the PCI slot and booted pc again - the screen stayed dark.

My question is this: Will the computer be able to recognize the video card and install its drivers since I am in the middle of OS Recovery?? I need to be able to see the screen in order to finish the system recovery. Help!
Last time I saw this, it was with a system with both integrated GPU and video card. If you plug video cable into integraed vga slot you might have video with no video out on video card.

Geek, what's the matter with you?
I know someone who had a left mouse button that stopped working. My suggestion was to GO to Walmart and buy an new one for $10, which he could well afford. Instead he spent at least 2 hours taking the mouse apart, cleaning the contacts, and PUTTING it back together. It can be fixed in some cases, and if you are out in the middle of now where it may be a good option, but if a Walmart, or similar store, is only 5 minutes away, i would go for a new mouse.Quote from: Geek-9pm on May 14, 2011, 09:13:22 AM

1. If he wanted a one-button mouse, he'd be using a mac.
2. Why would he need to pay postage for a new mouse? There are these stores, where you can go inside, and they sell mice. There really is no reason to buy one online, especially since they are going to be cheap as dirt.
3. "convert" a two-button mouse to a one-button mouse VIA software because the right-mouse button is broken? They could also just use the Application key, which can usually bring up the same menus. That isn't the point.

I have the disk ...it just won't download on my computer......on others it does fine. You did not say how you did the download. The 'i..s not a Win32..' message comes for a file that is not for windows. So you need to do the download over again. There are at least six download sites listed on the official down load page.

There are two mirror sites for Windows.

Solve : Unknow XP Installation & Disk?

Answer»

I know that every Dell OS Disk has its own key assigned too it or you have to enter one. I just recently formated my Dell Dimension 2350 after the constant BSOD message. Thing is that I have two of the same disk an during the install its not asking me for the product key that is on the side of the unit. When I try an check what key its useing, it says that its useing the same one for both disks. If you have the right version of XP the key will work.

Brandyhow does that work with the fact that its not useing the correct key?Anyone??? I havent activated it, so that is what making me wonderYou are using a Dell version of XP to install on a Dell COMPUTER that had XP and is licensed to have the Dell version of XP. Is that right?

Just install the system. If the product key is needed, it will ask. On a dell the OS can be installed again without the need to do the activate again. You have no need to know how this works. So please don't ask.

But if it does ask for the key and/or it can not activate, you may have to consult with Dell tech support. Microsoft declines to support versions of XP that were prepared by Dell, except for issues that affect all versions of XP.

You can call MS if you want and receive just about the same information.Yeah except I have another copy with a disk that looks the same I dont get why that happens though . I'll see once I get back an done with classes Quote from: Kon on May 10, 2011, 02:32:26 PM

I wish I knew what that means.
Are you by chance from New Jersey?NO Pardon me. I am having TROUBLE with my English.Thought that you were in the UK, says California thoughI think a product key might be used more than once.
But I am not sure of that.
You can not TRUST Yahoo Answers.

Can i use a WINDOWS XP disc more than once using the same product key?

huh!? I know that you can use it up around to twenty times. Beyond that you have to call MS.
There is a provision for a company to buy just one disc and get multiple licensees. And they can use other discs if a disc had should get damaged.. The discs do not have the keys that can only be used with one individual disc. Somewhere I read that the discs are in GROUPS. A disc will accept any key that is in its group. There could be thousands of keys in that group.
Does that answer your question?
Any disc from Dell will work on any product key from Dell, if the disc and product key are of the same issue.
Example: Dell sells 10,000 PCs all with Windows XP pro and all the PCs are part of that production run and the discs and key can interchange. Even if PC model numbs are different.

Also, we do not generally help with bypassing security features, such as passwords. You should always pick a unique password that you can remember and no one can easily guess. If you have trouble remembering passwords, I suggest you note your password on paper and hide that somewhere in case you ever forget... just don't forget where you HID the reminder.Quote from: albipasha on May 12, 2011, 01:32:32 AM

Can't people spell their birthday backwards? Usefull, except for 11 nov 2011 etc.

Solve : What programme is running?

Hope this is the correct place to post.

Windows XP

Security..Avira Anti-Vir, Malwarebytes.

Everytime i switch my pc on it takes around 10 to 15 mins before my sky broadband screen appears where as i know i can then view the internet but there is a programme running all the time before that which i am convinced is the reason why its taking so long, dont know if its xp updating or one of my securitys updating,is there anyway i can find out, sorry if its double dutch bit im new to technology.cheersIn windows xp you can depress 'ctrl/shift/esc" together and that will show the "task manager" which displays all programs currently running on your computer as well as percentage of computer CPU usage. I am including a web link to enable you to become more knowledgeable re "task manager" truenorth
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Task_ManagerCorrection needed:

For Windows XP you need to press alt+ctrl+delete

Keep in mind that a Wireless LAN will TAKE up to 15 minutes to get established if the Signal Strength is poor, like mine, 1 floor down, and drywalls.

Task Manager still does not give any Information from what is happening between pushing the Start Button and when the PC is fully up and running, and that is what you are looking for.

You should not use multiple Spy Ware during Start Up. AntiVir is maybe unavoidable, but you definitely do not need to run Windows Defender. Run the last one on a Sunday afternoon, out of the way. Same for Google Updater, or Symantec Live, HP Manager. These dumb Software packages all want to have their finger in the porridge. They are all useless thrash during Start Up.

It will take a lot of learning and work to trace the problem, as there are many things happening behind the scene.

What you need to do is dig into >Computer Management >Eventviewer.
Examine the logs -Application, -Security, -System.
There is where you will find the "Full Story".
To trigger and view the desired events, you will have to follow the "Help and Support" section and/or search for more on the Internet as you will have to set-up User Privileges first, to properly tune and view "Success or Failure Audits", "System Information", "Application Errors", to see what is hawking the system during "Start Up".

You also need to run "Msconfig" and "services.msc" and make decisions of what and what not to run during Start Up.
If you still not happy with that, than search the Internet for "SIW" and download the software.
As an extra Aid, download and install "Fix-It-Mats", that will help you.

Like I said: "Task Manager" does not tell much, EventViewer does.

It may take a lot of "Double Dutch (GVD's) swearing" before you get any result.

wow...alexK, As patio has exclaimed "wow" . I am sure that your presentation for the O/P is very well intentioned but may rise to the level of "daunting" in it's execution. By the way have you actually tried "ctrl/shift/esc" on an XP O/S? Works fine on mine. truenorthHi Truenorth,

I tried "ctrl/shift/esc" on an XP, Prof and Home. It works. I did "ctrl/esc/shift" and it get garbled. Normally I do "alt/ctrl/delete", to avoid my dyslexic behaviour.

My Compaq Pressario suffers from Start Up disabilities. 15 Min's usual. I figure, it depends on the weather conditions and how much Cigar smoke is in the house. (Old Wifs Tale).
To solve that problem, I hit the start button, have mug of coffee or two, a cigar and read the newspaper.
There, problem solved!

Of course, it is a "daunting" task. Myself, I am still trying to solve stupid Google Updater controlling problems. It is like a Jacobs ladder, one problem triggers the next one, and HP nosing every 5 minutes to snoop if I have printed something and count the printed lines, and letting me kindly know that my (their??) cartridge is "Almost" EMPTY. Ask me how to get rid that invasion and I will tell you how. Hp does things that are none of their business. The Sneaks. I have "their" number 56 filled for the 10Th time.
But to solve these problems, you must search the Internet, and after a 150 or so Webpages, you will find the answer. "Help & Support" on your box will not give you the "HPmngr Empty Cartridge" answer, it would be target for a Lawsuit.

Yes it is a "daunting" task, and thank you for the "wow", but a person is not going to solve dumb computer problems by just staring at that stupid thing. You must burn candles way PAST the middle of the night, search, search and search.
If you are afraid of screwing things up, than buy a $5.99 PC at the Sally Ann, load it up with W2k, and eat your hart out. Lots of FUN if you want to learn how the BIOS and HKEYS work. After all it does not cost anything other than patience and reloads.

As I said, "neeidea" ("No Idea" translated in English, and use Capitals where needed, S.V.P.) should pull a "Double Dutch" and search in the English Version of Internet. The other than English Computer Protocol, is in my opinion very "daunting". After all, the computer was born in the English Language, trying to solve problems in Non-English is very misleading. And I do read and speak several Languages, and the Non-English advise is difficult to understand.
Thus if a person does not Read/Write English very well, and tries to understand the basic PC problems, I call that " very daunting".

My advise to "neeidea" is to take that Dutch Bull by the horns, and do a Double Dutch, that is an excellent opportunity to learn English and the basic stuff of PC Problem solving.

I am always in for surprises, and still learning.

Keep in mind that a Wireless LAN will take up to 15 minutes to get established if the Signal Strength is poor, like mine, 1 floor down, and drywalls.

lolwut

The connection attempt would just timeout in about a minute. It might be retrying again and again, but it's not taking 15 minutes to establish a single connection. It has tried multiple times. It's not a regular thing. This is a sign of serious connection problems. Implying it "will take up to 15 minutes", even with poor signal strength, is just wrong. This isn't normal, and if it's normal for you, then perhaps you should examine your computer and network or discuss it with the person who manages your network.alexK - you've been warned once for posting nonsense. Stop now or your warning level will be increased and your posts will not appear unless approved by a moderator.neeidea: Open msconfig and on the General tab choose "selective startup" (uncheck all three items) and reboot. Does the problem still occur? If not, start adding items back to msconfig one or two at a time, rebooting after each change, until the problem reappears and you'll have identified the offending process. This is clearly a time consuming procedure, but it is the best way to determine if some process loading with the system is the cause of your problem.Cheers for the SPEEDY reply, i know where to come when i need somemore advice..keep up the good work...

Solve : Launch http page/string from DOS/Command Line??

Answer»

Hi all,

Am having a bit of a brain block...

I have two .txt files which I need to join together in DOS and then launch the content of these joined files as a URL.

So, imagine that a.txt contains "http://www.mysite.com" and b.txt contains "/mypage.html". I would like to join them via DOS command line and the open this in a browser.

All I can get at the moment is that the .txt opens inside the browser as a page, but I need it to actually load the URL, not display the URL in the page as a text file.

I MUST be doing soemthing wrong, can anyone point me in the right direction?

Thanks in advance!
Here is one way to invoke a URL from the command line.
Code: [Select]D:\>start firefox.exe "www.mozilla.org"This is DOCUMENTED on the Mozilla site. Except they don't tell you that you have to use the 'start' command.
Hi, yes, tried that, but it wont work in my situation, hwere I need it to launch the URL that is in my .txt file, even if i change the extension to .html... thanksYou need to show us what you are doing.
Do you want Firefox to got to a URL inside of a file?
That can be done, if you insist. But it is awkward and requires awk.
First, show your code and others here can recommend a method that works well and is easy to use.
I have no real code...

Yes, I need Firefox (or IE) to open the URL inside the content of the c.txt file (I can rename c.txt to c.html or anything else, that isnt an issue).

I am adding the contents of a.txt to b.txt with
Code: [Select]copy a.txt + b.txt c.txt
a.txt never varies, b.txt does vary, but thats not relevant.

I then need to launch the URL that is inside c.txt with either Firefox or IE.

ThanksYou can do this with simple batch language and build the url in memory:

Code: [Select]@echo off

for /f "tokens=* delims=" %%i in (a.txt) do set part1=%%i
for /f "tokens=* delims=" %%i in (b.txt) do set part2=%%i

set url=%part1%%part2%
firefox "%url%"

You might need to fixup the paths for a.txt, b.txt and Firefox. You are not restricted to Firefox, use whatever browser yu have with a fully qualified path.

Good luck.

You don't need awk or any other 3rd party program. You also do not need to use the start command with the browser.
Hi Sidewinder,

Thanks for your help. I have copied that into a .bat file and changed the paths and it nearly works, I have the FOLLOWING problem:

a.txt contains the following:
Code: [Select]http://IP/admin.cgi?pass=password&mode=updinfo&song=and I think this line:
Code: [Select]for /f "tokens=* delims=" %%i in (a.txt) do set part1=%%iis causing it to cut it off at the '&' symbol, as it is giving me the following error:
Code: [Select]Invalid parameter - =updinfoAnd only displaying upto the password in the above URL (IE : Code: [Select]http://IP/admin.cgi?pass=password)

WIll it not HANDLE the '&' sign? Is there something I can do to prevent this?

Failing that, it does actually perform the way I want it to.

many thanks for your help...
AWKQuote from: Geek-9pm on May 13, 2011, 08:52:25 AM

AWK

Sigh...but im so close, there must be a way to finish this? Can anyone confirm that it is hte '&' symbol that is causing the problem? Apart from that it looks like it will work...Not fair! Your original post showed very specific contents for A and B. Now we find out, well that's not quite true. Batch code does not generally allow for generic solutions and is very tightly tied to the data. In some cases the code will actually try to execute the data instead of process it. This can be helpful at times if you choose to write clever or creative code, but it lowers readability.

This little snippet does not RISE to the level of clever or even creative, but should provide a solution:

Code: [Select]@echo off
setlocal

for /f "tokens=* delims=" %%i in (a.txt) do (
for /f "tokens=* delims=" %%j in (b.txt) do (
set url="%%i%%j"
)
)

firefox %url%

As before, you are responsible for any path information.

Solve : Trying a restore, but not winning.?

Answer»

Thanks to all that gave me information on restoring my drive.

I have a 500 gig hard drive with Win XP PRO SP 3 on it.
I took an image of the drive when it was all going well, using Macrium Reflect.

Now, trying to restore the drive using the image, I FIND that the Macrium Reflect program gets to a point where it incompletes.
The wording reflect gives me is " Drive C: is locked. The partition you are trying to overwrite is being used by Windows."

Can someone advise as to how I should proceed with this please?

My thinking is that because the drive image is 250 gig that the C:drive doesnt have enough space left on it.

Since I took the original image, my COMPUTER drive now, has used 275 Gig.

Can I do a comparison of files between the image and the C: Drive and just replace the one/s that are different?

Is there a different answer as to how I might be able to restore my computer, that I havent tried as yet?

Thank you ImnoGuru. I'm not familiar with the program, so I don't know about its functions as far as making comparisons between the image and the current state of the drive.

However, you can't change the image of a system drive (in this case, C:) while the OS is currently running on it. This kind of procedure usually has to be done out of Windows. A LOT of disk imaging software can create a bootable CD specifically for this purpose so that the disc image can be applied over what's on the drive already.Restoration of the system partition needs to be done at boot. Macrium Reflect should tell you that and then automatically reboot.See Here...Thank you for your reply quaxo, ALLAN and patio.

I will see if I can create this CD then.
Thank you patio for the link.

Solve : Firefox 5, navigation bar and back/forward do not work?

Answer»

I have never been so frustrated with a browser as I have with FF. A few versions back it was my favorite, now it is [emailprotected]##$$%^&*()
I want to pull my hair out!!!
After many popups urging me to install new ver5, I finally did yesterday. Big mistake! I started using it on my favorite Webkinz sites and needed to use back button and realized it does not work nor does the address bar when changing from one page and/or site to another. I totally removed FF ,UNINSTALLED with Revo and started from scratch, I did not realize that I would loose all my bookmarks.
Ad Block Icon does not show any where so I thought maybe that filter it wanted me to install controls the ads rather my having control. I can't uninstall it so uninstalled, removed , uninstalled, removed all and now every time I try to install Ad Block the filter is still there.! Firefox support has no help what so ever. I have done everything I can think of and just know that someone here can help me. It seems that when I GET one thing working just great on this machine I run into another problem.
I do apologize for venting so strongly. Please just overlook my rantings.
Thank you. I will follow your directions to the word. Why not just uninstall it and reinstall a version you liked? I still use 3.6 and refuse to upgrade.I did reinstall ver 4 which I had before yesterday and the NAVIGATION bar and back/forward buttons did not work after reinstalling it. I had a very difficult time finding the ver 4 as well. I now have it saved in my documents.
I am willing to trying install of it again if it will start working everything properly.I think I found the problem. I had installed this really nice Bible Guide Toolbar. When I disabled it the Navigation bar began working. I guess I should say this problem is resolved.I AGREE, when i started using firefox 4 i found soo many problems, and now 5? Not because mozilla encourages you to use the newer version, that means thats the best there is..

I use Firefox 3.6 and havent had problems with it. Maybe sometimes with some flash videos but not all the time.
I also use Opera i think its a very nice browser too.

Solve : How to hyperlink a powerpoint slideshow file?

I am aware that it is possible to hyperlink a file from a computer which AUTOMATICALLY links it to the internet so people can access the file by CLICKING on the html LINK. Is this possible to do with a POWERPOINT presentation? you might want to consider HttpFileServer, a quick file sharing program that runs off your pc's IP address.

Solve : I cannot change screen resolution on my Dell laptop?

Answer»

I opened my laptop one day to find my screen is much larger than usual. I am unable to get into some of my files and some of my email attachments. I have tried many times to make it smaller by changing the resolution but after it restarts it will change from SMALL to extra large. I don't know what to do. I have a Dell INSPIRION laptop with Windows XP. Any ideas? Some suggestions
1. http://www.online-tech-tips.com/computer-tips/how-to-change-your-computers-screen-resolution/
2. This one sounds a bit far out but you NEVER know. http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/laptop/f/3519/p/19260246/19446660.aspx
My own suggestion would be along the lines of uninstallling the current video drivers and/or going to the manufacturer's site and update the video drivers from there. Then trying to change your resolution after that. truenorthHi,
Does you CHANGED the font size and resolution parameters from the control panel. It may be due to change in settings.

Solve : Recovery of doc deleted from recycle bin?

Answer»

I've deleted a document, it move to the recycle bin, I emptied the recycle bin. Is the document STILL retrievable someone in memory on my laptopFirstly, no the memory on you're laptop loses all INFORMATION once it is switched off, but the data will still be on your Hard Drive (that is where the data is stored, not memory).

Of course, you can 'Shred' files, this will remove them permanetly and they will be totally unrecoverable.
http://www.pcshredder.com/Quote

Not in memory as reddevilggg posted. But did you try 'System Restore' to an earlier restore point when your document was still in it's location in 'My Documents' or in 'Recycle Bin"?Quote

I think the question does not suffice his purpose. Permanent deletion or recover.
This one has both. http://www.piriform.com/recuva/featuresQuote from: jason2074 on July 16, 2011, 12:47:47 AM

I see now my solution will not work in this case. (I learn something new every day around here)
To TEST: I CREATED a file in my documents, then created a restore point, then deleted that document (including recycle bin), then tried to recover that file via system restore. The deleted recycle bin file was not available after restore.

So I guess recovery software as you posted is the solution.

Thanks jason2074!
