Solve : no sound from sound icon in tray?

Answer»

i've searched and looked and can't find my problem anywhere ... hope there's help here

well i have a sound icon in the tray and it does raise and lower the sound .. however, instead of hearing the level as the lever is raised or lowered, i only hear an internal beep in the tower ... programs have sound .. media plays well in all formats .. it's just driving me nuts that i can't hear that windows default beep louder and softer as i raise and lower the volume control lever! LOL
oh! ... yes, there are just a couple things that do not have sound that used to and the odd thing is that when i go into the sounds from control panel, they play there fine lol ... one thing is the recycle bin has no sound when i empty it, though it does in the sounds section and my mailwasher has no sound when new mail comes in and also does when checking in the CP sounds section ... so please PUT on your thinking caps and help the old lady out lol .. please and thanks!
i have win xp, a gig of ram and 2.4ghz dell dimension 4600Go to Control Panel > Sounds and Audio Devices and click on the Sounds tab. Is your Sound Scheme set to Windows Default? If not, what is it set to?

Also, you could try going to Start > RUN > sfc /scannnow. You'll need your Windows CD for this.yep ... went to windows default ... same problem ... sound is everywhere EXCEPT a few programs and the recycle bin sound .. all play in CP sound fine ... but moving the lever up or down doesn't permit me to hear the raising or lowering of sound level, merely a beep inside the tower ... so i have no way of knowing how LOUD the sound will be till i go back to the application ... a real pain in the neck :-( ... there's gotta be SOMEONE out there that can fix this short of a reformat! LOL
thanks for your time!

also spoke to (I THINK) Calum online today and was given a couple url's to check out about repairing windows xp .. but the browser crashed and by the time i got back, the chat was unavailable ... didn't want him to think i just left without thanks and i would actually like the urls again .... *just my luck, yanno? * *UGH*! LOL Yes, it was me you spoke to earlier.
Here is a link to a Microsoft article on performing a repair install.
Here is a link to a more informative article.
Nice suggestions CBMatt, we already went through setting the sound scheme to default as well as changing the default sound devices to the right one.
marywel, try CBMatt's other suggestion, sfc.
Note the space between sfc and the /scannow, it's not a typo.
I think that may be worth a shot before attempting a repair installation.

Solve : Windows freezing after sitting idle?

Answer»

Hi Folks

Im haveing trouble with my PC and i really hope you can help. Ive googled and asked LOADS of advice baut cant find the answer.

A couple of wweks BACK my friend gave me his old AMD 3500+ chip heatsink, fan and graphics card. Everything worked on his computer and he was upgrading so theres no reason to believe they are faulty. I bought a new motherboard, new ram and a new hard drive. So basicly ive got a new computer.
I have INSTALLED XP and a few small programs that i use. However any time i leave my computer alone for 20-30 mins it hangs. This is with no software running at all. In fact if i leave it during the logon screen it will hang then as well. But i can work away on it for ages and its fine its only if i leave it alone.

Screensaver is off, and so are any power saving otions. The temperature of the cpu has never been above 33°C and fans are working so it isnt overheating

Hope someone can helpHave you checked to see if there any power saving options enabled in the BIOS ? ?
Yes i checked that. Ill check again though in case i overlooked.Ive checked it and i found the cool,n,quiet feature was on auto. A friend told me this may be the problem if it was on. Ive disabled it now to see if it fixes the problemcool n quiet...COOL !Not so cool. Didnt work. Started my PC with this disabled and left it on while i played some Xbox. Sure enough when in come back and try to do something it freezes.

I really dont want to have to pay for new windows after i fling my PC through them

Any more ideasJust a shot in the dark here seeing how you said you checked all the settings in Power Management...
Go to Start/Run and type in sfc /scannow and hit Enter...have your XP CD handy as it will ask for it.

p.s. Did you remember to use thermal compound when you installed the CPU ? ?Yes power management is set so it never manages power. i.e everything is always on.

Thermal grease was on when CPU was installed. temperatures seem fine.

I cant get sfc/scannow to run. Sorry. When i run sfc / scannow a dos window pops up then disappears again. Too fast for me to read. I MUST have blinked the first time and missed it

Solve : Win 98SE and Nero 7 - Administrator rights???

Answer»

I'm not sure if this is the right forum, but I guess I'll start here: I recently purchased a LITEON combo drive so I could burn pictures to cd and watch DVD's. The drive came with Nero 7 Essentials software. Everthing seemed ok (I burned some pictures to cd, played a MUSIC cd, etc.) until I tried to play a DVD. The Nero "Showtime 3" came up ok but then there was a scratchy SOUND and I received the error message "...download required...". I went ahead & did the download - saved it to file & tried to execute it. Seemed ok at first- opened up a bunch of .cab's, but then I received the error message "...administrator rights required to install this software.." and that was the end of that. I've plundered around in my stuff and can find nowhere to set up administrator rights. I'm sorry this is so long-winded, but if someone would get me started on this "administrator rights", I would greatly appreciate it.System REQUIREMENTS for Nero 7 CALL for Windows 2000 or above. I suspect that's your problem. Thanks for your reply. I hope that's not it because the requirements that are written on the outside of the box that the combo drive came in says "...Windows 98SE...". I guess I can just bundle the whole thing up & return it, but then I'll have to fiqure out what to do next.My guess is the requirements stated on the box are for the hardware, not for Nero. But, if so, I would agree that's mis-leading to the consumer.

Yeah, you might want to return it if you can, and see what software is bundled with other similar drives. Or, you might buy Nero 6 on ebay.

You might also see what's AVAILABLE here for Win 98SE: http://www.snapfiles.com/Freeware/gmm/fwcdburn.html

Solve : Windows XP crashes at boot?

Answer»

Hi,
Just a few days ago, while PLAYING F.E.A.R.: Extraction Point, a window popped up to alert me that my system was "running low on virtual memory" and that it is now "using the pagefile" or something like that. I knew that was a bad thing, and I knew it meant something was wrong because I have 1GB of RAM; plenty to play F.E.A.R.: Extraction Point with...

So I rebooted my PC, and tried to launch F.E.A.R.: Extraction Point again, but it hung at the loading screen indefinitely. I rebooted again, same *censored*...

So I played Unreal Tournament 2004 for a while, which worked fine. But the next time I rebooted my PC, I got a B.S.O.D. (blue screen of death)! What happened seemed normal at first:
It gets to the CMOS or whatever (I see my motherboard screen) and it checks my RAM quickly as usual...

The screen then goes black for a few seconds (as usual) then proceeds to boot Windows and I see the Windows loading screen...

Then near the end of it, right when you expect to see your desktop, a B.S.O.D flashes very quickly, and my PC reboots itself automatically. If you don't turn it off, this cycle repeats itself forever. Most Windows B.S.O.Ds I've seen have been long messages containing a massive error CODE, but this one is pretty SHORT and I can't tell if it displays an error code or not. Like I said, it flashes extremely quickly, then reboots before I can read any of it. But after watching it a few times in a row, I'm SURE that it says something about the "memory" but it flashes to quickly for me to know what it says about it.

I tried booting into Safe Mode, but that crashes as well before it actually starts-up.

Boot CDs work fine; I booted into Ubuntu with a live cd which worked fine, and I backed up all my important stuff. I then booted a Windows XP install disc, and tried to "recover" my Windows installation but the option is not there. I Googled this problem and discovered that that sometimes happens.

At that point, I gave my PC to a smart friend who wanted to fix it. He Googled the NAME of the service that was starting up (in Safe Mode) when the PC crashed and the B.S.O.D. appeared and concluded that the problem had something to do with a motherboard setting or jumper or something. Other people that were having the same problem said that if you reinstall Windows, your computer will work for a few more weeks, but then start crashing again with the same problem unless you fix the motherboard problem. Well my n00b friend lost the site where he found the details of the problem, and he also forgot the name of the service that was starting up when the PC crashed, so I have no way of finding it again because he formatted the hard drive and reinstalled Windows. ARRRGGG!!!!!

The PC works fine now, but it will probably break in a few weeks since the motherboard problem isn’t fixed. -.-

Important Details:
I have had this PC for over 3 years and it has always worked fine, but in a lightning storm the hard drive got fried, but I thought it was the motherboard. So I installed a new motherboard which didn’t fix the problem and I eventually discovered that the real problem was a fried hard drive. I put in a new one and reinstalled Windows. Everything worked fine until just recently, when I started having the problems described above. The motherboard issue makes sense, since I recently installed a new motherboard.

The PC:
Windows XP SP2 with all the latest updates from windows update.
Athlon XP 2600+
1GB of RAM
The motherboard is a Foxcon (but I don’t remember what model and my friend has the case)

Do you guys have any ideas as to what the problem might be? Any links to sites with information on this problem? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Well, since your hard drive has been reformatted and your computer is running fine now, I think your question here is moot, or at least premature. I'd wait and see whether the problem occurs again. I would not put much stock the theory that "your computer will work for a few more weeks, but then start crashing again with the same problem unless you fix the motherboard problem."Quote from: SOYBEAN on April 01, 2007, 02:05:41 PM

Thank you for your quick reply! Yes, my computer is working fine now. But the real memory or pagefile problem or whatever it is could not have actually been fixed by reformatting my hard drive, right? So it makes sense that I will be having the same problem occur again soon. But, regardless, I see your point that my question here is premature, so what I am really asking I guess is what that motherboard setting or jumper configuration is that's caused the problem, and how I can fix it.

Solve : Upgrade version XP, need to delete all traces of previous version??

Answer»

My daughter's computer is not playing her GAMES properly like it did when I first gave it to her. The computer came with WinMe, I put upgrade version of XP Professional. I am considering cleaning up some programs on the hard drive, just wondering if removing files from WinMe/98 would impact the operation of XP? If so, is there a way to condense or compress them to save space, INSTEAD of just deleting them?

ThanksWithout more info on how that machine is setup it would be guesswork at best...
Are you saying that WinME is still installed on there ALONG with XP ? ?
Or are these older programs you re-installed after installing XP ? ?
How much free space is on that hard drive ? ?The available space on the hard drive is diminishing because we have loaded educational games for the pre-schooler and 2ND grader. I did not load any operating system after the WinXP upgrade from WinMe that came on the machine (Dell). As I was checking the Add/Remove Programs option to clear some space, I noticed a LARGE Program File for WinMe. I thought the upgrade to XP would delete those and move the needed files to the XP folder. I was just wondering if Removing this WinMe program file would remove files needed by the Win XP platform. During normal upgrade, would it not remove the existing Windows Operating System files that were no longer needed by the new OS?

Thanks

Solve : My computer.... stops.. working??

Answer»

I get an error that says the computer can't find a file called active.dpt, and now all of a sudden my comp just stops working, i can't open anything... can't use ctrl alt del... CANT even turn off the computer or CLOSE anything, if somethin isnt minimized it works... i don't get it lol

My computer isn't freezing, it's just like everything that isn't already loaded on my screen (such as this webpage for example) just doesn't work.. I can't open ANYTHING. Can't CLOSE anything. I figured maybe the error has something to do with the active.dpt file, but iono.

I started getting this error RIGHT after I reformatted my computer.

Thanks for any help. After you reformatted your hard drive, did you get on the Internet with that computer? If so, did you have firewall protection running?

That file must be very unusual; I only found one Google hit that applies to it. See http://www.techgeek101.com/forum/lofiversion/index.php/t22106.html

If active.dpt is a VALID file, then surely more info on it would be available. This makes me think it's not a valid file. Honestly, I'm not sure what to think. One option in this case would be to format again and start over with your installation of Windows.Yes, I used the internet after reformatting the comp, actually I'm on the comp right now... everything stops working after a short amount of time..

According to the link you gave me, it looks like active.dpt is some sort of startup file? I'm not too sure as I'm not too smart about all the little system files and such that make the computer work..

Also, I wasn't given a copy of Windows with my computer when I bought it, but that shouldn't really matter should it? Wouldn't this error be happening before I reformatted as well?

Also, I'm running on XP if that helps any. Thanks.Formatting a hard drive erases everything on it. How did you install Windows if you don't have a Windows CD?oops.. i think i meant system recovery sorryLet's be sure we get the facts straight, here. You did not receive a Windows CD with your computer but you did receive a Recovery CD. Is that right?

And, if so, did you use that Recovery CD to format your hard drive and restore your system to its original configuration?I recieved neither. I used the C Drive recovery option my computer has to reinstall Windows to the factory built state or w/e, removes everything and re-installs windows basically.OK, so you have a Recovery partition on your hard drive. As I previously said, One option in this case would be to format again and start over with your installation of Windows.Apparently it was some sort of virus or something that was SCREWING my comp over. I got AntiVir PE Classic and ran it and now most of the problems are gone, including active.dpt. It still locks up from time to time, but not as bad as it was doing. Thanks for the help

Edit: I was still having lockup problems, I simply did C Drive recovery after I found and removed all viruses, and it reinstalled Windows correctly so I am VERY happy right now.. again thanks for the help List all the protection programs you have on that machine....

Solve : Some big problems?

Answer»

My computer has just recently started acting up in a BIG way. first off, turing it on is a pain. sometimes the monitor doesnt come on and the computer doesnt sound like it boots all the way at all. then when i do get it on the BIOS comes up saying i have inproper CPU settings. I have reverted all the settings back to default and this problem wont stop.

today i turned my computer on to find that exploer (or something more than that) Has developed a big fault. first off, it freezes on boot up when it starts to load PROGRAMS. as in, task bar freezes and wont let me do anything. i have to mess around in task manager to get it running.

Now i tried to load up Trillian just now and nothing happened, so i tried one or two more programs...seems like anything that puts icons in systray wont load.
I also cant get into control panel, just freezes up explorer. also, no matter what now, the windows key doesnt work, at all. It has also started making the noise that it makes when it shuts down, kinda a coughing noise that i assume is comming from the HDD

looking over the CPU usage bit on Task manager, it isnt even using the CPU at all fronm the look of things, less than 10% at all times.

any help would be apperciated. This computer has run, without problems for months now.

EDIT: just found out i cant get into any of my files either...crashes exploerer he same as control panel.

Operating system (why only Service Pak 1?) / antivirus & antispyware protection / when did it start happening / did it ever work right / installed any new software?

One thing you can try is to boot into Safe Mode (F8) when the system starts and do a system restore to a point prior to the problem starting:

Start / Programs / Accessories / System Tools / System Restore / choose a restore point.

Back up your data / reinstall Windows & DEFINITELY get SP2 installed.

Alan <>< :-) You listed 5 CD drives. Do you actually have that many? Any hardware changes just prior to this problem? What power supply do you have? Thanks.

my computer says it DOES have SP2 installed...so thats odd.
I have Spyware doctor, AVG and Zonealarm running, all latest versions.

the werid, turning it on problem started about half a month ago. it had worked perfect before hand.

installed one or two games, but thats about it.

And I have 3 virtual drives. One CD drive and one DVD/CD burner

I run antivirus, antispyware and Tuneup utlitys about once every 2 weeks, if not more.
I will try a defrag in a moment, thanks for the help.

That's what I think happened, actually. I obviously am not certain, but I think that your processor is either malfunctioning... or overheating. The second seems more likely, actually; it sounds like it would cause all those errors, AND would screw up the sound made when booting.

Check your heatsink. Seriously. You may be slowly (or rapidly) cooking your motherboard.

EDIT: If it is your heatsink, don't log on to tell us; replace the cooler ASAP. If you don't have a way to get a reading on system temperatures, download SpeedFan and install it. It will also show some voltage info on many systems. So, take a look at that info, too; look at it at different times and see whether you observe some fluctuation in voltages. If you have ever overclocked the CPU, now would be an excelent time to set it back to its normal speed and power settings. Over time, CPU's that are overclocked, ware out. The more overclocked, the faster that ware.

Are all of your fans working? (Specifically the PSU fan, and the CPU Heatsync, and at least one main computer fan)

If you leave the computer off for a few hours, and then turn it on, does it work better?

When was the last time you ran Scandisk? Part of what you are describing may be caused by a disk error.

Also: Enter your BIOS, and dissable the "quick system diagnostics" so that it will do a full memory test. i think this has to do with an overheat problem. I will e going to the store tomorrow to buy some new fans and heatsinks hopfuly.

the CPU is not overclocked to my knowlage, and as i said i have reverted the settings to normal everytime bios came up automaticaly.

The PSU and CPU fan work perfectly...the PC fan, now there is a little odd...
I acctualy had to manualy start it spinning...when it started it was ok from then on...definalty getting that replaced.

I ran scandisk yesterday, only one erorr that was fixed.

the problem started in the morrning when i switched it on, i turned it off agan to go to college (about 4 hours turne dof) So, no on that one i guess.

will do that BIO thing asap.

I dont think i'd have so many problems with heating if my room wasnt such a freaking microclimate...basicly all the pipes in the house pass around my room. uncomfortably warm in winter, too hot to breath in summer.

Thanks for all the help guys.Quote from: Bobandabit on March 29, 2007, 04:15:53 PM

Even if this doesn't solve it (and I think it will), it's always good to invest in your computer.

That may have something to do with it. If you know a local computer whiz (there's a clique of them in every college ), he may be able to help install another fan for the PC, if that becomes necessary.

Thanks for all the help guys.

For my part, you're welcome. Im not so sure if it us overheating thats doing all this now...

the computer was off all night, when i turned it on, i have the smae problems as yesterday...
unless ive already screwed my processor?
also,. any pointers as to why it would only be a few programs that didnt work? they are some of the more im[rpatnt apps i use, but still...alot more run perfectly.

Solve : Changing drive letters + programs?

Answer»

Dear users:
When I installed a new disk, my system disk was changed to "F" and has stayed as such for some time.
I've installed multiple new programs and the default instalation folder has been F as it's recognized as the system folder.
The thing is, that I WANT to RENAME the "F"folder to the standard "C" but doing so I want all my installed programs to work with the new drive assignment.
Can it be done and how?

ArturoIs this a second hard drive? Merely installing another hard drive is not going to change your system disk. Did you reinstall Windows after you installed the new/second hard drive?

How many hard drives are installed? How many partitions do you have on them?
Dear sir:
Thank you for your reply.
Yes I have 2 hard drives and each ONE has only one partition.
As you suspected, the re-assignment of the drive letters was done when I re-installed windows and now my boot disk is F ( on one drive) than I have another HD which I use to save only DATA.
Please refer to my original question with this info.

Thank you

ArturoThis would be an extremely long and tedious process and EVEN then you might find some apps not working at all...

A Clean install would be the best route to take.

Make sure to BACKUP all important data before proceeding...

If Win2K or newer go to Control Panel/System/Device Manager.

Right click every instance of USB Roots and hubs and select remove....you will SEE a warning, ignore it.
On reboot Windows will automatically re-install the USB drivers.

Shut down and plug in the device and re-boot.

Solve : Reinstalling MMC in XP pro?

Answer»

Hi all. Long story behind this, but question is: is there anyway to reinstall or repair damaged MMC and Taskmanager in XP Pro without reinstalling the OP. ThanksCheck how your mouse is mapped, you may have it mapped so your left click sends you back a page (I have the same set up, but on the two side butyons on my mouse)Tnx fr reply , appreciate it but I have a fairly strong background in OS's. Need someone with a much more in depth knowledge. Tnx.Might try this...

Downloading and installing the MMC 3.0 for Windows XP is a breeze. However, you must manually ENABLE the new user interface by adding a key to the registry. Here's how:
1.Download the Microsoft Management Console 3.0 for Windows XP from the Microsoft Download Center.
2.Locate and run the WindowsXP-KB907265-x86-ENU.exe executable file to LAUNCH the MMC 3.0 installation wizard.
3.Once the installation is complete, launch the Registry Editor (Regedit.exe).
4.Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MMC.
5.Right-click the MMC subkey and select New | Key.
6.Name the key UseNewUI and press [Enter].
7.Close the Registry Editor.
Now when you launch MMC.exe from the Run dialog BOX, you'll be able to take advantage of the new Add or Remove Snap-ins interface. You simply scroll through the available snap-ins in the left panel and click the Add button to build your custom console in the right panel.
Notes: This tip applies to both Windows XP Home and Professional, but requires that SERVICE Pack 2 is installed.

What caused this current issue / when did it happen? A lot more info would be helpful.

Alan <>< Hi Ale52. Tnx fr the fix. It worked. Messing around with a software RAID on an AsusP4P800D board and didn't know enough.DUMM.Sorry,one other thing. I find that the Group Policy snap-in will not install. Eeeor code is: CSID: {8fcob734-aoe1-1101-a7o3-0000f8757le3}. Any thoughts? Thanks

No doubt, she actually has 512MB of memory but that laptop is using 32MB for onboard video.
Nice catch didn't even think about that amount of memory being assigned to something such as the video card.

Arlene, You'd not be able to adjust the conventional and/or extended memory detected by BIOS. However, you should be able to find a section in the BIOS that is assigning 32MB of memory to the video or graphics adapter. I'm not familiar with what BIOS you have, but would assume it would be under advanced or adapter section. You should be able to decrease this value once found and that would allocate more memory to your system and likely help with your performance issues.I think that's it, I'll test it further tomorrow. I'm so happy. One more ?before I retire. How much memory would be enough for video graphics. I set it to 16, would 8 make performance even faster? I don't use this for gaming and very little video. What type of video are they referring to here. Music video , short news video, watching a dvd, playing a cd?I think 8 or 16 would be fine even with 32 you wouldn't have much options for games. However, since you're having performance issue give 8 a try if it allows you, and see how it works. If it seems find leave it at that, otherwise bump it to 16.Are we running off at a tangent here?
Looking at the OP's first few posts I think running a tracert to CH would be in order.Laptops, at least some of them, vary the processor speed to conserve BATTERY power. arlene, have you ever checked your actual processor speed when you experience these slow downs? If you right click on My Computer and select Properties, the speed will be shown, along with the memory.Hi performance is lots faster except for example when I came to the forum and wanted to go to the 3rd page it was slow and system running in the backgroud. I went to comp. properties and I can't see where ther is a changing processer speed. the memory is changed to 496 MR of Ram per last nights tech. help. What does Feds message mean and what is running a tracert to CH. THANKS thus far. So, you consistently see 1.59GHz or 1.60GHz (whichever it is), right? Running a tracert "reports the path from you to the destination computer. It is commonly used to test the path to a particular system for debugging purposes." I don't see the need for it since your problem is not specific to viewing any particular website; it's a general problem when web browsing and doing multiple things at the same time with your computer, right?

If you open Task Manger (Ctrl/Alt/Del), how many processes do you have running?

Edit: What do you use to remove spyware/adware? What anti-virus program are you using? What firewall? The comp ifo says that I purchased a 1.6 GHZ and says that it is running at 1.5 GHZ. At the bottom of the task manager(running e-mail and this forum and rarely run more than 3 at one time) it says processes: 40 Is that useful information? When running this forum, when I wanted to move to the 3th screen it slowed down. Quick checked the info at My Comp. and said running at 1.59GHZ. Sometimes when I send e-mail there is the sending screen that comes up and the green lights keep sending over and over but doesn't really send. After the 3rd klick of send it sent.
I have windows firewall, Norton(run daily), Webrot spyware(daily). Received info from patio on sug. on what to switch to and instructions o that issue. going to do that this wk.
When I start browsing after a few pages my computer is running in the backgroun and TAKES some time to quiet down. Right now it is quiet cause I am typing. Exactly what does this mean? Your computer is continuously running when the power is on.

Thanks for responding. I did disk defragment etc., deleated temp FILES, cookies. removed unused icons on start-up took apart and cleaned fan, run virus scan dailey. For example: turning pages in this web site and ebay is when I notice it the most. It keeps loading and loading and loading. I hit refresh and then hit it again, i can't wait that long....frustrated! I have DSL and had a speed test done and it was really good. When it isn't doing this it is really good. Lastly, I don't have more than 3 things up at a time. Thanks in advance.

Does it happen on all sites or just these two?
How about a HJT log to see what's running on this computer? In reference to the comment on my post at 12:23, I meant that the computer administrator named patio went over virus and spyware info. I haven' downloaded them, but will do that tonight.
I think it may be a good idea at this point to monitor my computer for a wk and get a good feel with it's actions and behaviors with the graphic memory change I made last night and even try the memory down to 8 MGZ .
By noise running in the background I mean it sounds like the fan is overworked although is sounding less labored with the memory change. How many hours do fan's last.
Also would a new battery help. I almost never use my computer on battery only but have noticed the last time I did the screen was rather dim.
For example just now as I was wanting to send this post, the fan is running and it won't send. I click on stop, nothing happens, I click on refresh, nothing happens, it wont allow me to type. I can move the courser but all other actions are froze. After 2 tries it comes back to life and the fan stops. The process takes about 4 minutes.

Solve : Trouble with booting?

Answer»

heres the story:

i had just finished installing a PROGRAM (flash 8 to be exact) and that went off with out a hitch.

so then i start playing a game.

my laptop all of a sudden shuts off. i assume it overheated because it has done this in the past. so i leave it alone to cool down.

i go and try to boot it, and it runs the NORMAL toshiba diagnostic screen. then it goes to the menu where you select what configuration you would like to boot in (start normally, safe mode, ect.) then it goes to the windows os booting screen. after about 5 seconds of that, it flashes a blue screen error message for a second, then reboots, so i cannot read it.

so my friend tells me to enter BIOS, so i do, and he tells me to look for an option that disables auto-reboot. i cant find it.

so if someone could tell me where this option is, or another means of which to solve the PROBLEM, that would be great."i had just finished installing a program (flash 8 to be exact) and that went off with out a hitch."

What happened when you uninstalled flash8?

RAM:256 MB DDR Ram
Hard Drive:40 GB IDE HDD
Motherboard:Intel D865GBF(6 PCI & 1 AGP Slot) with Integrated Audio and Video
Graphics Accelerator:Inbuilt with upto 96MB of Graphics Memory

I have Windows XP SP2 installed on my System. My anti-Virus PROGRAM is McAfee Virus Scan 2006.It also includes Personal Firewall Plus,Spam Killer,Anti-Spyware and Quick Clean Lite.My PC takes around 5 Minute to Boot after the Desktop comes into Appearance. But the HDD Activity goes on.The HDD indicator LED is constantly lit till 5 Minutes and in those 5 min my PC responds slowly.Plz tell me a soln to this problem and FAST. You need to double your ram to 512MB.

Follow the guides at the below site.

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/setup/expert/northrup_restoreperf.mspxMore RAM would speed the boot process slightly.
The other things you could do would be to eliminate unnecessary startup programs, clean JUNK, defragment, remove malware and upgrade your hard drive.
Follow the steps in the guide above and see how it goes.
If there isn't an improvement, post back and we'll give you some more things to try.I have kept minimum Items in my startup. If I'm correct there are none.I don't know if Adobe Speed Launch might be there in startup though I have deleted the Icon from the Startup Folder.I defragment, check for Errors,Scan for Viruses,Spyware,Malware,Adware every Month.I can't disable the adobe speed launch startup process.Plz suggest a way to it too.Go to start --> run --> type msconfig and press enter.
Go to the startup tab and see what is checked there.
If you're not sure of them, either post a list of the items there or take a screenshot.

It was a choice between the skull and crossbones or a storm-type avatar.
Don;t worry, I won't go psychopathic on you . . . yet.if you go to start on your desktop click on run. type in msconfig then press ok. the system configurytion will pop up then click the tap that saids startup unclick all the program but your anti virus programs. you will have less running and more memory for other programs. also try type perfetch in the (run) press ok a folder will pop up delete everything in the folder you don't need all the junk then restart your computer it should boot faster if your computer is older then a new hard drive will MAKE it faster .. old hard drive will slow a computer down alot.gecko, your advice makes almost no sense.
I can understand very little of it, but what I can understand is that almost all of what you are saying is the same as what I have already suggested.
You have also spelt prefetch wrong, which means that part of your instructions will not work.
At the minute we are waiting for the OP to get back to us, there is little point in posting again until they have responded.
Please, just take a little time to review your post next time for spelling mistakes, and try to include a few full stops, paragraphs and capital letters. Also, think about whether you are really contributing to the discussion.

You can also use your monitor to adjust the size so you can get at the buttons.

Solve : My computer will not turn on.... Help!?

Answer»

My computer was working perfectly fine. I was moving and put my computer in storage for 1 month. After getting it out of storage I hooked it all up and went to push the power button and nothing what so ever HAPPENS. No green light turns on. Basically, it's as if my computer is not pluged in (and yes it is)...lol. I tried switching the power cord but that was not the problem. Someone had told me to try the reset button that didn't do anything either. I don't know MUCH about computers, just the basics. I do not know what to do to fix this situation.... someone please give me tips on what I may be able to try and do. Could be a few things....I would start with checking the power supply. Some come with a switch on the back to shut them off.....next I would replace it.

I have tried the switch on the back but it didn't do anything.... got any other suggestions???
Open the case and do some housekeeping...a can of compressed air is good for this.
DO NOT use a vacuum.
Use a QTip to hold the fans in place when blasting them to avoid damaging them.

When done carefullu remove and re-seat the vid-card, RAM and any other addon cards.
The gold contacts can be cleaned with rubbing alcohol.
When EVERYTHING is re-seated replace the CMOS battery...about the size of a dime located on the MBoard...part # CR 2032 available even at Wally World.

For now leave the case side off and power up. See if any fans are not turning and listen for beeps.
If you get nothing then borrow a known working PSU of the same or greater wattage and swap it in there to see if that is the culprit...if so buy a new one.
Do yourself a favor and don't grab a 20 DOLLAR special.

Best of Luck...

As always when working INSIDE the case make sure all power sources are unplugged.

Solve : my 2 mp4 conversion programs no longer work??

Answer»

Oh. I don't know a whole LOT about all this. Just was WONDERING if that could be DONE and if was even worth trying. What I'd try (if you have Roxio, and Nero CDs) is to uninstall Roxio, and Nero, and see, if converter will work. Thanks for all your help. I uninstalled both but no luck. But I am sure it has something to do with Nero. I had the TRIAL version of Nero 8 and I believe the trial period ran out right about the time that I started to have trouble opening my 2 conversion programs. It must have affected those programs.

It's got to be something with Nero.

I may just reset the computer and START over.Try CCleaner, first.

Solve : sleep mode in xp?

Answer»

I have a problem with my XP sp2 sleep mode. When I press the sleep button, the computer goes to sleep. I will come back in a half hour or so and the desk top is running again. This just stared in the last week.

I have tried adjusting times in the DISPLAY to no AVAIL.

??
It might be that it's waking up because of an option in BIOS. Look for something like "wake on LAN" or "WOL" and switch that to off.It can also be being triggered by such things as your e-mail client CHECKING for new mail...your AV program checking for updates...or Windows itself phoning home for updates...
With the amount of info provided it's impossible to tell though.update: I went to device manager/hardware/network adapters/realtek.../properties/unchecked allow this device to bring computer out of standby. My next step if needed was to do the same in Mice or MOUSES. This fixed my problem so I quit before I messed something up. Thanks for the hints.

Solve : Windows XP Users (auto log in)?

Answer»

I know I've done this before, now for some reason I can't REMEMBER how.

With Windows XP Professional, when the computer boots, I want it to automatically log in to a specific user without going to the welcome screen. The user account does not have a password, and it's the only active account other than Administrator.

Through the advanced interface for editing user ACCOUNTS (Start->Run->'Control Userpasswords2'), if I disable "Users must enter a user name and password", then it automatically logs into the administrator account, which I don't want it to do. I want it to go straight into the user account I created, and for the life of me I can't remember how to do it... lolIt is in control userpasswords2.

Run it,
Uncheck users must enter a username and password for this computer
click apply

On my computer a dialog box pops up "Enter the user you want LOGGED on and their password etc"
Fill that in
click ok
done!Quote from: Bones92 on JANUARY 27, 2008, 03:14:16 PM

Like I said, I've tried that. It's not asking me for a user name or giving me something to fill in. It's ignoring the other account and just logging the administrator in. Then I have to log out of the administrator account, which takes me to the welcome screen where I have select the user account again.Have you tried turning "off" Fast User switching ? ?
This SOMETIMES sticks it to one logon only...Yeah, it's off too.

This still has me confused. For some reason, no matter what I do, it still won't log in the way I want it.You can use TweakUI for XP to solve it...
Careful there though...there's some semi-dangerous tweaks in there so back up the registry first.
You've been warned... I don't know why I hadn't thought of that before. I forgot you can set that in TweakUI.

Solve : Clicking links from within programs won't open the browser?

Answer»

Hello all, just registered, first question.

I'm trying to figure out why nothing happens when I click on a link that's supposed to take me to that product's web site.
For instance, if I click on a link [within a program] (like it's "Home page", or "Online Help", or "Upgrade to Pro version") nothing happens. It should (and used to) open up my default browser, but for quite a while now it doesn't*.

Also (this might not be related, but...) clicking on links in Thunderbird (email) stopped working too. (though I thought [that] might be an intended result of a security 'fix' or something, so now I just copy the URL and paste it into Firefox's address bar, no big deal...)

But the main issue I want to resolve is the default (or any) browser not opening.

*Note: If I click on the link to "Download new add-ons for Internet Explorer" from within the "Manage Add-Ons" dialog box (in Internet Properties -> Programs [Tab]), IE *does* open!

Also, clicking on saved web page links/shortcuts from a folder or on my desktop works fine.

I've gone through all the "Internet Settings" and IE settings within other programs (like Spybot S&D and SpywareBlaster) and all the settings look fine to me.

I've tried turning off the firewall [temporarily] (and checked it's logs and settings to see if anything is being blocked), but EVERYTHING looked normal and the problem continued when the firewall was off.
The same for my AV (Avast). I stopped all the "On Access Protection" but the problem persisted with it turned off.

The 1 'error' that I've noticed is:
When I click on "http://www.avast.com"(If I R-click on the Avast 'sys tray' icon and choose "About avast...", then click on that URL/link) I get a dialog box pop up that's named "ashUInt" and a message stating "The specified file was not found".
(That [.dll] file *IS* in the Avast folder though)
- Anyway, that issue is only within Avast [obviously], and doesn't occur when I click links within other programs.

I seem to recall this issue starting after a Windows Update, but I could be mistaken.

Now here's some FYI:

OS: XP MCE 2005 (all updates/patches current)
Browsers installed (all the latest versions): IE7, Opera, Firefox (set as the default)
Security Software running: Avast Home 4.7, Sygate Personal Firewall, Spybot S&D (w/ Tea Timer running), SpywareBlaster.
Network: 2 PCs behind a NAT router.(No connection issues whatsoever)

Honestly, I'm fairly experienced and I rarely encounter issues I can't resolve myself, but this one stumps me at this point.
Everything else on my system is working fine.

Does anyone know why this is (or NOT) happening?
If it's some simple solution that I'm overlooking I'm going to kick myself....

ThanksIt sounds like you've tried quite a bit. One thing I've noticed is that sometimes the "default browser" link can break, just one kind of glitchy issue with some versions of windows.

Try going into IE, going to tools, options, and changing the option that says IE should check to make sure it is the default browser.

Close out of ie, re-open, and when it prompts, have it change itself to the default. Then, do the same thing with firefox, and try the links again.

Let me know if it works.I would also like to add a thank you for the detailed info. That makes my task of answering your question a LOT easier.Funny you should mention that....

I forgot to mention the fact that I [had] changed the setting in the IE 'default' check box.
I just didn't do it from within IE (control panel-> Internet Options) then open IE afterwards.
I did wonder if something was awry with the IE/Default Browser settings.
Sometimes I get the feeling that MS/IE doesn't 'play nice' with other browsers.
Maybe I'm just being paranoid..
Also, I did *think* of 'jiggling' the 'Default Browser' setting. Turning settings off/on seems to work to reset settings in many cases. It's worked for me in the past on occasion, I just didn't actually DO it COMPLETELY. I was SO close!

So as you can probably tell, it worked. At least so FAR... I switched IE back to the default browser and tried the links, and they now work. I just haven't tried switching Firefox back as the Default, then check the links. I wanted to get to the forum and let you know ASAP.

I'm now going to go do that, and I'll BRB to post.

Way to go SOC! Nailed it on the first try.OK now this is weird. I unchecked the IE check box, closed IE, Opened Firefox and checked [it's] 'default' check box and set [it] as the default.
When I clicked on the Avast link the same 'couldn't find the file' box popped up.
I closed that box, and a second later Firefox opened up the Avast web page.

I then tried another software link, this time in "WordWeb" and it worked fine.

So the issue is resolved except for the error alert from Avast.

I've also noticed this behavior before. You click on a button, a dialog box opens and tells you there's a problem, but the action completes anyway. It doesn't happen often, but enough to recognize it when it happens. It must be some kind of conflict or coding issue.

Well thank you for your excellent help. And I'm glad I was on the right track, even if I didn't completely solve it myself!

Thanks again, and have one of your favorite beverages on me (kind of).

Cheers!

PS: I'll have to recommend this forum in a future blog post!Glad I was able to help you out.

I've been in that situation before where I've tried nearly everything I can think of and just gotten stuck.

I'm guessing your suspicions are correct about a coding issue, possibly with avast, but I'm not sure (I'm not too familiar with avast, but it MAY have a particular liking for IE over other browsers).

Cheers, and thanks for the drink

Solve : how to check for conflicting firewalls?

Answer»

I am trying to make a listing on Ebay and the listing procedure will not upload my pictures.
I have been told by Ebay costomer services that there may be conflicting firewalls installed on the computer.
How can I check which firewalls are active and if they are stopping me uploading pictures to my Ebay listing.
I am using windows XP home editionWhat do you have as far as security software (antivirus, spyware, etc.)? What flavor of Windows are you using? What type of Internet access do you have and what is the physical layout of your home network? At the moment I dont have any security such as antivirus, spyware etc, these I have REMOVED to try and resolve this problem with Ebay
I am using Windows XP home edition which I have just reinstalled from the reload backup disc.
Internet is via Orange broadband via a plugin modem CONNECTED to a dedicated telephone line.Eeeek! Your computer is exposed and naked to the Internet!? Get some sort of protection or it will become infected with all sorts of yuckies and you'll be FORCED to spend a lot of time on this board.

Did you just do a repair install or did you format and reinstall? If it was a repair install there may still be leftover bits of software lurking. If you just did a format and reinstall there won't be any conflicts because the Windows firewall will be the only one on your system. Thanks I'm going to reinstall AVG antivirus, do you suggest any others.
My problem is I'm not sure what I'm doing trying to learn as I go along.
I tried checking for firewalls by going to control panel and checking add/ remove programs, I can not see anything thast RESEMBLES a firewall ie Norton or Macafee
etc.
Thanks for the advise I will install AVG antivirus. Any other suggestions why Ebat will not upload my pictures to my listing. When I try the upload timer just remains on forever. Please can you guide me thgrough the format and install procedure and I will run the reload disc in again to see if it resolves the problem
ie dont know how to format and install
thanksWhy not open an account at photobucket or imageshack ; post the pictures there and then link them to eBay ? ?

I don't think this is a firewall issue here...

Does anyone KNOW how to make the "Out of Paper" Message Popup sooner? Currently it takes anywhere from 1 to 5 minutes before the message would appear stating that the printer is out of paper.

Too many unknowns: version of Windows, what kind of printer, is the printer conntected directly to the PC or is there a printer serverWindows XP and the printer is directly connected to the PC. Didn't know if there is a registry setting that can be changed so that it only trys a CERTAIN amount of times before displaying the "Out of Paper" Message.
Those options would normally be found in the Options/Tools SETTINGS of the printer itself...not in Windows.
Have you checked in the printer's documentation ?

Solve : System Restore/SystemCheckpoint?

Answer»

Used system restore and checked System Checkpoint to revert system to earlier status. As the system automatically shutdown to reboot, the system did not recover from the shutdown. Now....the system will not even "power-up".
Any ideas will be appreciated. You don't get any signs of life? No POST screen or beep codes? Do the fans and drives get power? After leaving the PC IDLE for about an hour, I was ABLE to powerup again. STILL, I am unable to restore to a System Checkpoint.
The PC is about one year old and I have never used System Restore or ADDED any Restore points. This could be either a software or hardware issue here....i suspect hardware so try and provide as much info on the machine as you can and we can go from there...

Solve : Windows XP OS system reload??

Answer»

I have put in countless hours of trying to figure out what to do...Her is the situation:
I have a 2002 Gateway with Windows XP. I had an issue a few years ago and my friend ended up reloading the OS and partitioning off the "bad" OS. I now have 2 OS to choose from. No biggie. The big problem now is my OS loads but there is NO capabilities when it is finished!? I cannot get into the control panel or even the recycle bin! i have tried the safe mode, and still the same thing, which is really nothing. I have WOULD like to be ABLE to get the data I have and maybe just reloading and STARTING fresh...I need instructions on what to do~ PLEASE~
I am not totally computer illiterate but not as savvy as I probably need to be.
Thanks for your time~
BrenQuote

partitioning off the "bad" OS
Are you saying that you have a nonfunctional OS hidden away in a separate partition? That's probably not especially relevant to the problem at hand, it just confuses me . . . .

It sounds to me like you have a malware infestation. What do you have in the way of Internet security (firewalls, antivirus, antispyware, etc.)? Do you have XP Pro or Home? Service Pack level? How up to date are your Windows updates? I have NetCom3 recently installed
Yahoo/Norton anti virus/spyware
Verizon DSL w/firewall on the network
I just tried to reboot using the XP statup *censored*, thinking I could just start fresh...won't let me do it though...keeps saying unable to
and Yes it is a non funtioning OS..
XP with service pak 2
What can I do to just get rid of everything and start over??
Hook up the drive as a slave in a KNOWN working machine.
Copy/burn all the important data you need.
Re-install the drive in your machine.
Re-boot with the XP CD in and in the original setup menu select delete all partitions and re-create one partition and continue with the install.Ah...slave?
Any directions would be appreciatedThe hardrive on older (2002) machines are EIDE and can be set to master or slave via jumpers usually found next to where the power cable and ribbon cable connections are. Many DRIVES have a chart on their top label which shows which pins to slide the jumper on for master or slave. If you add your drive as a slave to another machine that has an another drive that is the master, Windows will see your drive as not as C: but as letter D: or E: or F: or G: etc. It depends on how many other drives are attached ( CDs, DVDs, flash drives, etc.).

Solve : Machine Locking Up?

Answer»

Well, I have another PROBLEM...on another machine. This time HP, 760 M RAM, running XP w/SP2.

Seems EVERY time I need to do a "save" or "save as" from the fly down "file" menu, my machine locks up....tight. Nothing works. No C/A/Del...... nothing. Only option is to unplug. If I manage a first "save", I can CLICK the save icon in the toolbar as many times as I want, but when using the fly down menu, as soon as I type no more than 3 characters in the title box........ hard freeze.

The programs I'm working with are ArtShade Pro and ArtCam Pro. ArtCam is a CNC 3D image buildiing/rendering program, the ArtShade is a relief viewing program that allows me to turn a rendered relief file into a universally viewable/shareable .jpg, .bmp, etc image file. I also work with Corel, but with no problems.

I don't use much wordprocessing, or data BASE software. I can surf the net all day, work with email, and even play a while in Second Life with no major problems. Occasionally I have a short stumble in SL where I must wait till things settle, but no major problem.

I have been using the same machine and configuration for a couple years. This freezing THING is a recent problem.

I have reloaded both CNC applications, but the problem still persists. I have both Spybot and SuperAntispyware loaded and have run each a number of times. Computer keeps coming up clean of anything major other than cookies.

I'm curious....is this something specific the software, or is the "save" issue an OS issue?Did you try to contact CNC, or use their forums?

Solve : replacing processors?

Answer»

was GOING to get a new and faster processor, how can i tell if my computer will
accept a much faster processor, and a fellow at work told me to make sure i burn it in,what does this mean and how do i do it, also if i have to get more memory, how can i tell how much memory my computer will accept, thanksYou will need to post the make and model of your motherboard in order for us to tell you what processor you can install in it, and we will also need to know what processor you currently have installed.

In the case of a CPU a burn-in is usually performed by letting the processor run special software for extended periods of time. This is done to see how hot the processor gets and to some extend to test the stability of the processor.
Unless you plan on overclocking your CPU a burn-in isn't really something you need to do.Deerpark posted before I was fiinished. I said pretty much the same THING. :-)

If you have an off-the-shelf PC from a major MANUFACTURER (Dell, HP, etc.) you should look to their website for more info. If it's not a namebrand you'll need to know the make and model of the motherboard. It should be printed somewhere on the board itself. Take that info to the motherboard manufacturer's website and all the technical info you desire should be available there.

"Burn it in" just means to run a system or device for a period of time to ensure that all components are working properly. That's not something I WORRY about unless I'm doing tweaking or overclocking. Download , install and run Everest Home on that system...choose "save to text file" and cut COPY and paste the Computer Summary portion of the report here...Click here for one place to download Everest

Solve : desktop shortcut icons problem?

Answer»

:PI feel embarrased to ask this question but I cannot find a solution to removing the desktop shortcut icons attached to my screen without removing the shortcut from the application or removing the application itself. I have spent an exorbitent amount of time trying to locate an method for doing this thatdoes not includeusing the registry, ordeleting the icon from the screen. I have used the Show Desktop in the context menu, Hide Desktop, etc. The icons remain on the screen. Ultimately what I am seeking to do is have a CLEAN screen with only the Startup Button showing in a taskbar that shows only the Desktop>> bar next to the hidden icon bar containing the time. Thanks for listening.RIGHT clik the icon...
Select Delete. If you don't want to remove the shortcuts but just hide them, try this:

right click on the desktop, mouse over "Arrange icons by" and select "hide icons".

the screen will go black for a second or TWO and when it comes back there will be nothing by the start button and taskbar.

This is in Windows XP Pro.Quote from: Kando on June 20, 2011, 11:54:42 AM

Judging by the post i would think he/she wants to remove them...not hide them...

I COULD be wrong however.Thank you to both Tulsa Rose and Patio for you response to my quandary. Although you both have a different approach, either execution worked. ( i applied both methods to include hiding as well as restoring the icons ) I made a note in my "how to" notebook to future reference. Sweet! Thank you so much for all that you folks do here at CH. Solve : I need help! What is w_1^VY!!!!!!!!!MKKSkWISPHidden>+G9P$cp(j=d8+fTjNKNm?

Answer»

I bought a new 500 GB HDD and installed Windows XP Professional and started having problems just like the ones I have listed here. So I wrote zeros to the drive, and reinstalled Windows XP Professional.

The folders/files on the installation disk are:
FOLDERS: DOCS, I386, SUPPORT, VALUEADD
FILES: AUTORUN.INF, README.HTM, SETUP.EXE, WIN51, WIN51IP

AND I KNOW THIS IS WRONG but I don't know what to do about it!!!

I kept telling the local computer guy that I think EITHER my MBR was screwed up, or that I
have been hacked and somebody is controlling this thing remotely, but he would "run
diagnostics" and said there was "absolutely NOTHING WRONG!" He did it 3 times. So I have come to you hoping you can help me. I really, REALLY want my computer back.

First of all, there is so much information to examine. Yet some important details are missing. Please provide.

During install the Windows CD must be booted by the computer and the install program will repair any problems with the MBR,. Also, there is the option to format the hard drive, so it should not be necessary to write 0s to the drive with another utility. So MBR ISSUE is unlikely.

How old is the Computer? Did it already have a working XP on it before you installed a new drive?
Is this a new t SP3 version of XP? OEM or Retail?

Were there any warning messages during the install of Windows XP from the CD? If so, what?

It would be very unlikely, even impossible, for a hacker to get i into your PC before the install was completed and you got on to the internet.

Without knowing more, it would appear that something is wrong with the Windows XP install CD. Have you used it before and got it to work alright on another hard drive or another PC?

You say the drive was tested by someone else, so there is no reason to think anything is wrong with the drive.

This is normal, all programs downloaded from the internet will have a zone identifier, and when you try to run a program windows looks for that identifier and if present will show the dialog. The reason the publisher field is empty (and technically there is no "verification" ever done anyway so that dialog is misleading at best) is because the setup program doesn't have one- the program run probably does. Or, also possible, it's looking at another field.

Either way- this is not a concern.

Every program you download from the internet is going to show you that dialog. (the reason the SAS setup didn't was because it didn't finish downloading, which is also why the .part file is still there as well as why it fails when it tries to run).

I cannot state with any certainty what these are, but unless they are referring to present files (on a P drive...) they don't do anything at all. Another question might be, how, in either case, you feel these are suspicious? Because you don't know why they are there? My guess would be they are used for Remote Assistance information. Again, all the computers running windows I have access to have these entries. This includes the Virtual Machines, which I've only used for testing my own applications and have never had access to the Internet.

The default size used by windows XP to create a system partition is ~128GB or so. Also, without Service packs XP setup can only see 128GB or so as well. diskpart can only extend data volumes, not system or boot volumes, as detailed here.

OK. Thank you. You may unsubscribe me now so I no longer clutter up your wonderful site.

You did not provide some simple information.
How old is the computer?
- Old PC will not go a 500 GB drive. Failure is chaotic
Did it already have a working OS on it?
- If not, the PC could have many issues.
Did you use a XP SP3 CD to install?
- Older versions of XP also cause **chaotic failure.

**chaotic failure. In this context it means the hardware and software performance and recovery does not fit a obvious nor rational pattern. This can be when hard drive data is corrupted by an errant process, but not a malicious process. That behavior has been identified and documented elsewhere when using an old PC with an older XP CD and a large hard drive.
You lack of willingness to provide essential information about the history of the PC has led to this thread, which is as you said, a lot of clutter for the CH site. BC's curt response reveals that your post has the earmarks of an attempt to sabotage the CH web site.

For the benefit of others reading this: Do not ever try to install andolder version of a Windows OS on an older PC with a hard drive larger that 127 GB. This has been very well discussed elsewhere. The mere FACT that somebody else did it does not mean it always WORKS. We don't want to beat a dead horse.Quote from: Geek-9pm on June 21, 2011, 11:33:08 AM
BC's curt response reveals that your post has the earmarks of an attempt to sabotage the CH web site.

No, it just seems clear that they are looking for problems where there are none; as they noted, they've taken it to a tech who said they couldn't find anything wrong, but instead of going "oh, OK, silly me" they instead chalk that up to the tech not knowing what they are doing. They state these registry entries and other otherwise normal (for the installed software) entries as "problems", when they simply don't understand them. I don't understand what the heck they do (the Word ones, for example) but I do know those keys appear on a perfectly clean install of Office on a machine that is never connected to the net, and deleting the keys breaks Office application associations, so clearly they do something.

I think what confused me is they said they "were having the problems they listed" but they don't actually list any problems. This is probably the most important thing to know- what is wrong. Listing registry keys and files doesn't tell us the problems one is having! There were no problems as posted...Quote
I bought a new 500 GB HDD and installed Windows XP Professional and started having problems just like the ones I have listed here. So I wrote zeros to the drive, and reinstalled Windows XP Professional.
My point was that he did not identify the PC nor the version of XP. He then goes on to talk about things that do not offer any clarification. Without knowing which PC and which XP, it is hard to even guess at what problems he really has.
Therefore it would appear to be , IMHO, deliberate obfuscation.

Pardon me if I missed the real point of his post.

In any case, They've gone somewhere else. I personally think they just need ONE person to confirm their suspicions that there is a "hacker" watching them; anybody else just doesn't know what they are talking about...Yes, he wan ts to blame somebody. Notice this:

Solve : Windows XP Media Center Edition Version 2002 SP3?

Answer»

I bought my laptop in 2004 before the 2004 release date of Windows XP Media Center Edition 2004. It is a Toshiba Satellite P25-S670 and at the time of purchase very expensive--over $3500. Frankly I got it for the 17-inch screen, not to watch tv or do musical things. I have invested in RAM and it now contains 2GB of RAM (it started out with 512 MB of RAM).
It runs Microsoft programs fine but having invested so much money I would like to use it for Adobe Creative Suite software. This computer has always been troublesome with running any software that is not from Microsoft.

I instinctively feel that to tamper with an OS that was factory installed which this was as OEM is courting trouble--particularly since my laptop has the built-in tv tuner capability for watching tv and a host of other features I have never used that in 2004 were extremely advanced.

What is the best way to use this laptop and its generous amount of RAM for Adobe and other non microsoft programs? Is there something about the computer's registry that is different? Is there a safe OS to upgrade it to that would allow it to be compatible with most all programs?
Thanks in advance for your HELP,

1. Please explain this further.
2. Nothing special.
3. No.
4. No.1. When installing Creative Suite 3, it just hung--task manager said it was running but after a very long time the green progress bar had not moved and the cdrom drive was not spinning at all and no light came on to indicate that it was READING the info on the installation cd. But believe me, CS 3 has problems on lots of computers, it is just that it had this weird hanging problem only on my MCE computer

With CS 2 it did not understand the color profiles used.

I think that it had some trouble with the ACT contact management software a while back.

I stopped using it when I got computers that had regular Windows XP Home and PRO because they were easier to use. But now, I really need the extra power offered by this Toshiba--especially the RAM. It is a Pentium 4 and has 80 GB hard drive so it would be very useful to be able to depend on it for my older software programs. If this is not specific enough, I can return to the forum when I have more specifics. I was just wondering if while I had the time (on vacation from work), I should investigate another OS--either a later version of MCE or something else that has been really tested.

In 2004-2005 most software had not been tested on MCE 2002 and no one seemed to be able to answer any QUESTIONS about it.
Thanks,
techiedropout

I don't know enough about the differences between MCE2002 & WINXP. I am not familiar with the software you are attempting to install.
The question to be considered is how much money do you want to invest in an 8-10 year old laptop? All laptops were expensive then, my 12 year old laptop was over $2500. Most laptops are now in the $500-$1000 price range and will be 5X faster than the one you now, have 2GB RAM, & a 320GB hard drive. It's 7 years old...
You have done all the upgrading it will take by bumping it to 2G of RAM...
The slowness is not a Microsoft issue...it is what it is.

The only OS upgrade i would suggest would be Win2K...Yes, but with a twist--I am looking for a technical manual for the XP MCE 2002 that I can use to just bone up on this OS.I'm assuming you read my suggestion and have decided to stik with MCE.

Solve : media player list pane?

Answer»

Hi:

I'm using XP home edition SP3 with media player 11. When playing .WAV files the list pane displays the CD name repeatedly. I have the song titles typed in as the FILE name. Is there a way to set media player to display the file names?Welcome to CH.
You need to explain what is on the CD. Is it a store bought CD? If the CD is from the store, will show Title, TIME and Album name.

Also, CD you BURN or if it has been prepared properly.

However, some programs to burn your own CDs may not RECOVER all the information from the source. Or the source may not even have the information.A general information for WMP is here -> http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Add-or-edit-media-information-in-Windows-Media-Player

Solve : AVG paid 2011 installation failed now can only boot in safe mode, HELP please!!?

Answer»
I have just joined this group so sorry if this sort of question been asked before.
I am running XP sp3 and needed to upgrade to AVG 2011 had been running 8.5 with no problems but was time to renew. The installation looked fine no problems and even updated the first time after installation. Next morning or reboot it got to windows nearly loaded then all of a sudden a black screen and the system shut down.
I have since then tried EVERYTHING. I couldn't use the POWER button to start up until I had unplugged and tried again, then it worked. I could reboot to safe mode (which I am in now)but can't find any solution have used removal tool to take avg off I can not scan for virus etc as can not complete installation now as when gets to same point it goes to black screen and shuts down.
AVG will not help as they say as their software has been removed then it is nothing to do with them if it is still doing it. I feel there is some file missing or been corrupted by AVG installation and I can not find out what it is to repair or replace.
I had shut down so many times XP wanted to scandisks but of course it only got so far then shut down and in the end wouldn't even boot in safe mode. I then had to do a repair inplace from windows XP cd and got back the safe mode. In full mode it got the old problem of shutting down as windows was nearly loaded.
I was going to to use AVG rescue cd but it only got so far and then black screen and shut down. All I managed to do was Memtest86+ which had no problems.
Any body got any ideas?
Someone help please, I've been doing this for days.

Thanks
MikeDload and run This...

Then you can choose to re-install AVG or another protection app...Hi
Thanks for reply.
I did that and had loads of problems fixed and did the restart only just at the very last of my settings being loaded it did it again went to black screen and shut down.
I was so hopeful too that all the software probs had been fixed. It has to be software doesn't it as it runs fine in safe mode? I sometimes got warnings before running the SPEED up pc that this file was missing from itunes help and from pc suite but they have been fixed or removed as no more messages.
Some things I don't use any more have shared files and uninstaller advises maybe they need to be left on for other programms.
So I still can't install AVG or any other as can't get fully booted on a restart. I don't really WANT to do a windows upgrade and have to go about re-entering all my settings if I can get away with it. I have tried transfering all files I need on to other pc but when I check to see if will work the files c an't be found. I used a transfer cable but think will have to use something like pc-link.
Does anyone have any other ideas before I give in and do a total windows upgrade? Thanks. We need more info on what led up to this...

Sounds like you had more issues than just a wonked AVG install...especially if other apps were having issues.

I don't know what else you might need to know really. I appreciate your time and effort.

Why will it boot ok in safe mode? What is it trying to do when gets almost finished loading all my applications and then something makes it fail in same place mostly now.

Sorry can't be more specific.

It boots OK in safe mode because you either have faulty or incorrect drivers installed in Windows...

Think of what you have installed/uninstalled driver wise...I installed A4 tech drivers for wireless mouse and keyboard a few days after I tried to install AVG because it seemed that every time I moved the mouse while it was still loading my settings that the screen went black and it shut down. It made no difference adding new drivers it still did it.

I thought I had uninstalled lots of things in the last few weeks since this began, in a bid to get rid of unused stuff but I can still find them in the programs so I assume that uninstall didn't work even though it said it had. Uninstall isn't very reliable in safe mode I'm told.

I have tried to restore to a time before AVG 2011 install but it still does it.

I searched for all files with AVG in their name and considering it should have been removed by their own removal tool and then the speedup my pc thing I paid for this morning, there were too many files to count listed! I would try to locate a removal tool in google if I could get IE to respond tonight! I tried to look in history and it wouldn't respond and a windows installer little window appears saying preparing to install (doesn't say what) like you get when a new program is about to install. It too just sits there not responding. I tried to cancel it but it just reappears after SITTING there saying canceling for ages. I tried to uninstall spyzooka and a message saying AVG was still trying to install and use that file.

Sounds like there are a lot of conflicts going on. I ran the speedup mypc again this evening after it had supposedly fixed 3024 errors and it found another 42 in registry alone that it now has fixed. IE not being one of the things fixed though!

Could it be Hd or motherboard that is causing all these strange problems?

I might try to put my Hd out of that pc into my other one as the slave to see if it works? Though I have done this before it was a long while ago and my other pc is Intel(R) Core(TM)2 quad cpu Q9950 [emailprotected] Ghz 2.83Ghz. 400GB RAM 32 bit operating system Windows Vista. I am not sure what I have to do about jumpers and altering the bios etc.

I could do an upgrade to Vista once all the data off but I really don't want the bother especially if the hardware maybe causing the problems anyway. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. ThanksHow did you acquire your AVG 2011 antivirus?
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-removal/remove-avg-antivirus-2011Downloaded full internet security2011 paid version from AVG website.

It was a renew subscription that entailed installing the new version. It didn't work the first time tried to install so I followed their instructions and downloaded the removal tool and run that then tried again and it appeared to have worked as I said, even did an update and pronounced pc to be protected till the next morning.

Solve : Picture is blocking desktop screen?

Answer»

I have a HP mini , running XP home edition with no CD/DVD Rom and no EXTERNAL drive.
My daughter up or downloaded a picture and does not know where or how it GOT there.
The pic and border is covering the whole desktop, I have a cursor with nothing to "click on". I can not use Windows functions at all.
F8 configuration options, (safe modes) show black screen. cursor but no function.
Tried to restores, last known configurations to no avail. Tried safe mode with command prompt, entered ANSI.sys and got in,
but in safe mode can not delete etc.
Got into pictures but can not find the picture that is blocking desktop.
Got into control panel display, again can not identify this photo file to change it.
I got to this form looking for DOS commands. It seems like the photo is in between DOS and Windows to me...?
Diagnostics is not effective, there is nothing wrong with the system it says.
If I can kill the picture, life may be fine.... any suggestions on how to identify and delete?

I thank all for any GUIDANCE or idea's !

mjdslc4In order to take out your desktop icons and tool bar etc, I would believe that it would have to be an application that is trying to run full screen at say 1024x768 where your resolution is far less. When it is like this though, you should be able to CTRL+ALT+DELETE to get to Task Manager and be able to kill this application that has taken over your screen.

Also if it were the strange case where an image was able to stretch beyond your native resolution, you should be able to right-click on the screen, go to display properties and change the background to say no background image displayed and have it back to normal.

There is a feature called active desktop, but I have never seen active desktop provide for SOMETHING to run and force to a larger resolution beyond the viewing area of the native display settings.

Solve : PS AIO 02 software?

Answer»

I keep getting this on my TASKBAR when I boot-up. PS AIO 02 SOFTWARE keeps poping up on my screen. Does anyone know what its about and how I can delete it permanently. Thanks. S.Q.It's some sort of photoshop programme.. what is the problem exactly. It can't be that hard to uninstall in your control panel. Is it causing a problem? This is a HP software number. Probably an out of DATE driver for your HP printer. If you upgraded to Windows 7 from Vista the HP printer software is not compatable with the newer Windows 7.

How to fix it.

Go to the HP site. Open the "drivers" page. Enter your printer model number (C8100). SELECT from the drop down your Operating System (Windows 7) Follow the instructions to download the new software from the HP site. It may take an hour to download. Then another half hour to boot up the new program. Plan up to 2 hours to fix this.

Or, You can purchase the new driver on disc from HP for 10 dollars and have the disc in a few days.

Solve : Graphics Card or RAM??

Answer»

Hello all, me again.. posted here about a year ago.

I a problem with my computer (same one I had before.. I really just need a new computer. 7 years haven't been very kind to it), in which upon starting up the computer gives 1 long beep, and 2 short beeps.. and the monitor is receiving nothing from the graphics card/computer itself (this is my assumption)

I looked up some BIOS codes and found that the beep sequence means a faulty or unseated display adapter, but when I googled the problem, several threads came up saying that it was a RAM problem, and not a display problem.

I'm currently running Windows XP on my Sony Vaio RA820G. Not sure about the other information like motherboard and such offhand, but if it's required I can go ahead and search for it.

Is there any surefire way for me to figure out exactly what the problem is? Or do I just have to do some guess-work at one point and try things out? Is it RAM or my card? Is the card itself burnt out or just not seated properly? I tried taking out both the memory STICKS as well as the graphics card before putting them back in, yet the problem still persists. I'm not entirely sure whether it was a seating problem yet though, I'm not exactly confident in my ability to put sensitive materials in their proper location, though I've done it before.

Or is there anything else that might potentially be the cause I may not have heard of yet?

Any help is greatly appreciated, thank you for your time. Quote

...just need a new computer. 7 years haven't been very kind to it...

That will make you the target for many unkind remarks. In most parts of the world you can either buy a refurbished computer or have a skilled tech upgrade our old system for about half the price of even the cheapest new computer.

A bad graphics card is most likely. Try another card.

Also, you could remove the mother board and power supply and clean them both using low pressure air. Dust, moisture and similar stuff can degrade the performance of electronic devices of any type. That may help.
Unkind remarks are pretty easy for me to ignore. =) I want my computer fixed, not opinions about my computer's age.

I guess I'll have to try and buy a cheap video card and see if it will work. Thanks.

The card itself looks okay to my inexperienced eye though. When i swapped the previous Asus Radeon in this same computer, I could tell it had gone out. It had little ''scorch'' marked, and looked as though it literally had burnt out, whereas this one doesn't have a single blemish on it sofar as I can see.

My computer's Hard Drive HAS been ''failing'' for a little less than a year now... might that have something to do with it as well?Quote
My computer's Hard Drive HAS been ''failing'' for a little less than a year now... might that have something to do with it as well?
Yes, don't wait long to replace a hard drive. They can die very fast. PRICES now are better than ever for older IDE type drives. For under $40 you can buy a 'white label' or plain wrapper with about 80GB. New, on EBAY from trusted vendors. And free shipping in some places.

A new hard drive would be your best investment, after solving the video problem.I see. Yeah, I've been trying to convince my dad to get a new HDD. He wants to get a new computer, which is understandable.. but the current computer is still pretty beast.. even though it's dying, I rarely have problems with it, it's fast, and doesn't need to be babied.. unlike some of the more recent computers my friends have gotten (though cheap).

Thanks for your help friend. =) Hopefully I'll be back soon with good news.hi

I feel the same way. When I see people saying "OMFG you should buy a new comp" as if it was a solution to their more specific problem I have to take extra steps to prevent myself from telling them to STFU. Particularly since when I joined this site that is exactly what my situation was, an ancient (10 years old at the time) machine.

As for your problem- in a curious twist, the older machine that I referenced (I still have it, in fact, but I digress) had this issue intermittently- One long beep, two short beeps. I know for a fact it was the display adapter in my case, because replacing it (it was an AGP ATI Rage Pro 3D) with a Radeon 7000, solved the problem and reinstalling the Rage Pro for "emergencies" a few times have caused the same symptoms to show up on other MACHINES. In my case it wasn't something that always occured, but I did get the same beep code so I feel this may be related, particularly GIVEN the lack of display.

Quote
I guess I'll have to try and buy a cheap video card and see if it will work. Thanks.
I think this is the way to go as well. Only problem is- you can't really go to a brick and mortar store and get some older card architectures. AGP is pretty much gone from store shelves, and earlier incarnations of PCI-E cards as well. You might want to look on eBay or online retailers, which have immensely good deals on cheap, older video cards that would probably get you up and running just fine.

Computer hardware isn't really something you can always diagnose visually; the previously mentioned Rage Pro looks otherwise fine, and so too does the Radeon 7000 I replaced it with (which eventually failed as well). Also older cards sometimes lacked a fan, and dust cakes onto it like a blanket. Cards with fans can have the fans fail, Passive heatsinks can come loose, etc.

This is incorrect. While the machine is going through the POST, it stops at the first problem it finds and beeps the code that blames the offending part. They don't "stack" beep codes. Also, from my experience with the same beep code sequence, it was the graphics card.

Solve : Preventing remote drive access and the difference between Local and Removabe drv?

Answer»

I work in the IT department so knowing things such as this and having first hand experience is mighty helpful, but some things just cannot be analyzed by behavior alone. If there is one thing that I'm disgusted with its Microsoft's website and MSDN to find answers like this or at least clues. I turn to the community for answers and appreciate the feedback.

My question is this:
What is the difference between removable drive and a local disk in regards to remote ACCESSIBILITY?

I tested remote drive access between two computers one running XP and the other Win7 64 bit. The test was done against an encrypted TrueCrypt volume mounted to drive K. For the first test I mounted the drive to both computers as a local disk. I was able to access the drive from one machine to the other by USING this in the RUN command: "\\ip.of.win.pc\k$" However, after mounting the drive as a removable drive on both machines I was no longer able to remote access the drive letter specified as before.

I realize this is only one way that remote disk access can be achieved, but I was curious if this is in all cases.I've tooled with this for awhile but couldn't find any documented differences between the two that would identify the behaviour ENCOUNTERED or a solution to achieve the desired security. Any information on this matter would be appreciated.I uncovered some information regarding muliti-user environments http://www.truecrypt.org/docs/?s=volume-mounted-as-removable-medium and also some information regarding administrative shares https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/Administrative_share , but I haven't been able to determine if remote access of a mounted volume is not possible or secure if mounted as removable media.

Again, if there are experts out there in this field or have experience please direct me to the answer if known.

Solve : Serious Problem With HP Pavilion ze5000 Boot?

Answer»

Post the link you used for the MBoard drivers....NOT the generic HP link but what page you actually DLoaded them from. This here:

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=ob963en&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=214342&os=228

The HP ze5000 used the same motherboard as a ze4000, so the drivers can be used between the two models. Don't mark me wrong, I know this for a fact, and the drivers are meant to be used with the 4000~5000 models. But I think this is beside the point. I think something is failing, most likely hardware. Cheers, GS.Alive, anybody? I got rid of the machine. That ought to help clarify that I wanted some further much needed help but sometimes threads get magically ignored on forums like these... For the benefit of visitors to this forum

Please note the lesson to be learnt here is NOT that "sometimes threads are MAGICALLY ignored".

There may be many reasons for lack of advice.
I am quite new to this forum, and speak ONLY for myself.

My reasons for holding back on this thread were :-
1. OP failed to give diagnostic information that was requested;
e.g. request on 9 OCT.
2. Arrogant assumption on 11 Oct that "Well are you all just going to WALK away from my thread here?"
whereas I at least was waiting to see information as requested on 9 Oct.
3. False declaration on 10 Oct. that "I am unable to use the machine anymore,"
4. on 12 Oct the information request of 9 Oct was again requested
5 on 12 Oct the OP again failed to comply, and instead told us he had downloaded all system drivers and made it much worse
6. On 12 Oct OP advised that following Patio's advice everything worked perfectly, but the original fault returned IMMEDIATELY he defragmented the drive.
7. On 13 Oct I asked
"By repeating Patio's advice, does that mend it ?
and after mending it, does defrag again trash it ?"
These two question were ignored, and 3 days later we are asked "Alive, anybody?"

Summary :-
To get a speedy solution, one should :-
Not assume one knows better than the people offering advice;
Give the information as requested;
Be patient and courteous.

Alan
First of all Alan,

LET me clarify to you that I never ignored any of your posts. After you asked me about the Defrag possibly trashing the system, I acknowledged that in the next post.

Patio asked me to post the drivers I used, so I did. And nobody came back to discuss the situation with me for over a few days. This tells me the lack of devotion to discuss the topic, as well as the lack of devotion to further respond to a thread, was basically what I saw.

And that is why I posted, "Alive, anybody?", and then a few days later, the final post I made before you replied. Patience runs short after a while if nobody is willing to step up like a man and help somebody else out, and devote some of their time to respond to threads, rather than letting the topic poster's reply collect dust for days without even letting the person know about what needs to be done next.

Get the picture?hi guyzz,,,
i have big problem.. i have laptop HP Pavilion ze5000... last night while using it.. all of the sudden the monitor or screen is turning black.. as in black..... i don't know what to do then i TURN in off then on again but the monitor still black, the good thing is still working.. the problem only is the screen or monitor..... sorry Im not a technical or computer expert..... i really need help guysss....Please start your own thread. I recently changed the ip address of one of my computers. Now I can't access this computer from the unchanged one. I can access the shared folders of the unchanged one from the computer with the new ip but not the other way around. I tried pinging the new ip from the other computer but don't get a response. I also changed the WORKGROUP of the other computer to match that of the one with the new ip address but still same problem. can someone please help? Thanks Before getting the best help, you need to provide some addition details.
What kind of computers? Model #?
Which Operating System?
Is i Windows XP?

Was the SYSTEMS and the local network working well at one time?
Why did you change the IP?
What IP are you using?

Have you already used the recommended software for building a network?
Are you using a wireless router?
How do the computers connect TON each bother.?

If you are using a single Ethernet cable and a not hub or router, then it should be a cross-over cable.
Please give more information.Quote from: Geek-9pm on June 23, 2011, 02:00:09 PM

In network places you can search for another computer on the network.

yes I can see the other computer in network places but when I CLICK on it it computer can't be found. You can use the search feature to 'find' it. That forces a refresh if the stuff. Windows has habit of putting things in a cache. And not doing a refresh of the cache often., You have to make it refresh. You search for the computer, when it finds it again, it has the right address.

It is not clear why your ISP told you to change the IP address. Both computers ought to be in the same sub network and in the same DHCP range.

Do uou know the local IP of your computers? On the command line you can type
ipconfig /all
And this gives the local IP, gateway and DNS numbers. They all have to be in the same sub-net.

I did a search for the computer as you told me and found it but when I try to double click the icon I get the following error "\\computer is not accessible. you might not have permission to use this network resource. contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. the network path was not found."You need to set permissions on the computer that does not respond. By default, Windows XP does not set te Share Docs folder to public view. You have to do it.

Still, it is not clear why just a change of IP should have caused this problem.

You may need to have an administrative user that EXISTS on both computers.

I have administrator rights on both computers. i have also shared folders on both. I can access the shared folders only from the desktop but not from the laptop. To be more specific:
Same user on both computers.
Both computers share the shared Docs folder.

On the laptop create a new user with the name "Fred" (no quote marks)
Fred shall have full rights on the machine. He must have a password.
Reboot the laptop and log into Fred.

Don't forget to share the shared Docs folder

Now on the Desktop computer do the same. Same name, same password and privileged access. Reboot Lon into it. Now Find the laptop.

Don't forget to share the shared Docs folder

Next, go back to the laptop and find the desktop. You are Fred and the other machine has the Fred session open. Now Fred can read Fred.

Shutdown both PCs.
When they both are down, turn them both back on and log in with you regular account on both machines. The account should be an administrator with a password or both machines. It should not now be necessary to use Fred, but Fred is still there. Leave Fred alone.

I have no idea how this is documented anywhere. But it works. Most of the time.

Solve : Dell recovery partition?

Answer»

Like many at that time the original owners were scared spitless of Vista and opted for a downgrade to XP Pro. Since we got it that WAY, XP Pro is what will go on it.I was confused, because you said: "...running WINDOWS XP but it has a Windows Vista coa on it...".
Don't know if the Recovery Partition was Vista or XP. I don't UNDERSTAND how it can have a Vista COA if Dell installed XP? Since XP was considered a "downgrade", maybe you can USE either one?Hi, sorry for slow reply.

My guess is that Microsoft bowed to CONSUMER wishes but left a possibility of getting Vista on the machine if they could fix it. That is why it had the Vista coa on it but was loaded with XP Pro.

Solve : Any free software to test if a Hard Drive is bad for sure ??

Answer»

Is there a easy to use free software to test for sure if a hard drive is no longer working or it's some other fault causing it ? I am not too well versed in computing, so will need a step by step instruction or a easy software that I can download with another laptop and run at startup on the non working laptop.

I have a Sony laptop, model VGN-SZ583 (Asia Model number) and when I tried to do a fresh install of Windows XP with SP3, it comes up with the message that the hard drive is not installed or something similar after it went through a few CHECKS at boot up. I've tried this several times with the same message.

When I go into BIOS, under ADVANCED, it says there is no hard drive.

The laptop originally came with Vista Business installed and I downgraded it to XP. When I tried to reinstall Vista, again, after some analysis and copying files from the installation CD at bootup, it came up with the message that the hard drive is smaller than what I am trying to install or similar message.

The reason I ASKED if there is a simple way to find out for sure if it is a dead hard drive or something else causing this is:
1) at boot up with the installation disk in the CD drive, it was doing some analysis and copying. If the hard drive is dead, how come it can still do these initial function.
2) it was functioning before I tried to do a fresh install. Everyhing was running properly except that the Java software was not functioning and cannot be installed. I need this for online internet banking. After trying various ways to install Java without success, I decided to do a fresh install. That is when I ran into this problem.
3) initially when I did a fresh install, it worked, but was not functioning properly after having installed all the relevant drivers and some of the regular third party sofware I normally use. I then did another fresh install with the same result after installing the drivers and eventually, a blue screen error will show up. After that, doing another fresh install, I got the situationas described in (1) above.

Any help on this will be greatly appreciated, especially if there is a simple software to check/test if the hard drive is still good and something else is causing this problem or the hard disk is fried.

Many thanks. The microphone is on.
The practical answer is no. It is ALREADY obvious that there is something wrong with the hard drive, the BIOS does not recognize the drive.
There has been some discussion about this issue on the form. It would appear that your hard drive is bad, however there is a reason for stating that this is not absolutely true.
How old is the computer? Was any physical DAMAGE ever inflicted on the laptop or the hard drive ? From the information you have given, it was the transition from the Vista to XP that changed some information on your hard drive.
This issue has caused confusion because many believe that there is no way that software could make a permanent change to the hard drive. Let me tell you that it's not so. It is possible or software to change some essential information on the hard drive and make it difficult or other programs to recognize that you have a hard drive, including even the BIOS on some systems. That does not always happen, in fact, it's very rare. But it does happen.
Here's the best recommendation in your case. Get another hard drive. It does not have to be a brand-new drive. Even a good quality used to drive of the same type and size will work fine. Just make sure that you are buying from someone who is honest and will give you your money back if the drive turns out to be dead. Once you have a replacement drive installed you should be able to put Vista back on the computer without any problem.
Later on, you may wish to put your old suspect drive into an external USB enclosure. It is just possible that it might work in the external USB enclosure.
This is the best I can offer. And by the way, I've been working with computers and hard drives for over 20 years. And lbefore that I worked in Silicon Valley in the hard drive research department of a once important company. Of course, that does not mean I'm right about anything. But there is some background in what I am telling you.

And if the hammer is funny, I have to do ti mostly with voice recognition software, winch is only 97% reliable.

Make sure that you change your BIOS settings to boot first your Vista CD that came with the laptop and do a clean install. It might still be seeking for the HD.Quote from: Geek-9pm on June 28, 2011, 12:45:03 AM

Thanks for your reply. I downgraded to XP back in November last year and was working fine till a week or so ago when Java disappeared on its own and I can't reinstall it.

The laptopo is about 6 or 7 years old and nothing physical was ever inflicted to it.

Since you were working on hard drives for a long time, perhaps you can help to clarify the removal of the ribbon cable from it and the motherboard. As you know, one end is attached to the hard drive itself and the other end is attached to the motherboard. Can the motherboard side be disconnected and then reconnected again without having to do any major work on the motherboard - ie simply pull up the ribbon cable then clip it back at the motherboard end ? There's been question as to whether this end can be disconnected easily and reconnected.

I'm trying to remove the hard drive, but having difficulties. I've posted this here on the forum, but not getting any concrete answers to it so far.

Thanks

Make sure that you change your BIOS settings to boot first your Vista CD that came with the laptop and do a clean install. It might still be seeking for the HD.

The BIOS is always set to boot from the CD/DVD drive as the first OPTION and to boot from the hard drive as the last option.Ok that was an obvious suggestion and sometimes overlooked. Did it came with a recovery partition?

When a retail version of the Windows® XP operating system has been installed on a computer that originally shipped with the Windows Vista® operating system and the hidden partition was also deleted in the process, it will not be possible to reinstall the original factory-installed Windows Vista operating system unless a Recovery Media Kit was created before the downgrade was performed.
If a Recovery Media Kit was created before the downgrade was performed, you can recover the computer using the Recovery Discs. If a Recovery Media Kit was not created before the downgrade was performed, you will need to purchase recovery discs.

The flat ribbon cable for the IDE PATA drive is a source of trouble. The contacts that bite into the cable become oxidized after a time. If you don't have the proper repair tool, it is better just to get another ribbon ribbon cable.Sorry I forgot to mention that. You can use either 40 or 80 wire cable. The 80 wire is preferred.

Just push and pull the cable gently a few times in and out of the connector. That can 'crack' the oxide layer on the teeth as well at the pins and jacks . Do that and maybe the drive will come back to life. I have been doing that so long I guess I thought everybody knew that. Oh, check the power connector two. Sometimes the power molex fail to to work as you want. Use a small needle to tighten the p4 pin molex power connector. The female part. It gets bigger will time. It must be snug.
