Solve : end task doesn't always END TASK !!!?

Answer»

Hi to forum users.. I am a newbie, so hopefully someone can help.
When I experience a problem and wish to end the task, whenever I PRESS alt crl del, the programme doesn't quit... instead Task manager keeps opening another line.. and that is repeated for a long time..it is driving me nuts Quote

instead Task manager keeps opening another line
...which says?Hi Broni..thank you for replying.. I may not have expressed the issue the best way, so will try again.... i.e

I am running windows messenger, also (e.g only) internet explorer, and blah blah

blah blah isn't responding... end task window appears
I say yes, and attempt to end the task
A new line appears below the tasks that are running, asking if I want to end the blah blah task, even tho blah blah appears at the top of my tasks.
Even tho I highlight blah blah, end task continually opens on another line, below those at the top..e.g messenger, and IE
The more I press end task, the more times it appears, also in my task bar.

I hope that explains my problem Broni.

uninstall blah blah. I've NEVER heard of that PROGRAM. What does it do?hehehe, other then the joke about the Blah Blah program...
Another way to do this task kill.

Open Task Manager -> Ctrl+Alt+Del
then select the program that you wish to close and right click on it.
Select go to process.
Then when it selects it, right click again and either kill the task or all associated tasks.

Give that a go, should work better. That is normal...in task mamager when its shutting down a program you will see another task START up. This is to complete what you asked the system to do...shut down another task. Once the task is closed the other entry that you see popup will close by itself.

If you find that you are forcing a program closed this way a LOT than I would suggest you look into why the program needs to be forced closed.

Haven't TRIED dragging to the program as yet. It is so much easier to Browse the folder, like before, then just hilite the specific picture and sdave it to the program.
BTW - I also need to add My Pictures folder on my Startup menu. Before the folder was listed just under My Documents.BTW - I also need to add My Pictures folder on my Startup menu. Before the folder was listed just under My Documents.
What does that mean?
My Pictures is normally in My Documents and most programs know to look there.

Solve : Blue screen of death!! Please help!?

Answer»

Recently, I was on the Internet and I visited a site with torrents and dowloads. I did not download anything but instantly my computer became extremely slow and I ended up just shutting it down. When I turned it on the next day, I got a blue screen of death saying...

A problem has been detected and windowshas been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

Driver_irql_not_less_or_equal

If this is the first time you've seem this stop error screen RESTART your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check to MAKE sure any new hardware or software is properlly installed. If this is a new installation, ask your hardware or software manufacturer for any updates you might need.

If problems continue disable or remove newly installed hardware. Disable bios memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use safe mode to remove or disable components restart your computer, press f8 to select advanced startup options and then select safe mode.

Technical information:

Physical memory dump complete.
Contact your system administrator or technical support group for assistance.

But restarting it dies nothing, and f8 does
Nothing either. Help me!!Check device manager for any problems......check memory is seated...check nic card is seated...have you installed any new hardware or software? This may sound dumb but.. How do I check those things? My computer won't move past the blue screen at all.. And no I haven't installed anything new in months.. Do you have access to a windows XP disc. If so, boot from it, and then select repair. This should do the trick. QUOTE from: Ohivylo on May 05, 2009, 05:49:01 PM

Nothing either. Help me!!

The Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) should not prevent you from accessing the Windows Advanced Options Menu at startup (F8). Does the BSOD occur before or after you log into the Windows OPERATING system?

We could really use more information:
o Desktop or laptop?
o Manufacturer of computer (if brand NAME) or motherboard if custom built
o Model number of computer if brand name or motherboard if custom built
o Version and level of Windows operating system? For example, Windows XP Home, Service Pack 3Do you have your windows CD?

Solve : PC w/o OS. Can I move harddrive to this and get my OS??

Answer»

May I ASK a question?

So many posts are here from users with no idea how a virus got on the computer.
Then we get posts from members here the don't think Microsoft can look into a computer.

Why is that?
what do you mean. Its not micros fault.Quote from: squall_01 on May 06, 2009, 02:13:42 PM

what do you mean. Its not micros fault.
I was no blaming MS. My REMARK is that the same kind of software tricks that the malware people use for bad stuff can be used by MS to see if any PC is legal. And they can do it without breaking the lws. If you want an update, you have to LET MS look at your system.

So if you somehow turn off the activation, sooner or later MS will knot that you have a copy that was not registered. This is not unduly harsh of MS. Software ADMINISTRATORS have TOOLS available to take care of the problems that may arise with the activation process.

Solve : Learning what it means?

Answer»

Burned, have a look at this:
http://www.dtidata.com/resourcecenter/2007/04/23/how-to-slave-hard-drive/

You can GET all of the data off of that hard drive.I will have to get the computer to reconize the HD first. Then take it from there, to see if I even get a C:> WINDOWS DIR,ETC.just a thought, if you havent already resolved your problem, you can take out your hard disk and try to RETRIEVE your files. Then just reinstall the OPERATING system on the hard drive so it is back up and running normally.

Solve : Valor hidden?

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced

key hidden

At the present moment the value i have is 2

Excuse my language. I'm from Canary Islands
mine is set to "1", which shows everything, I believe. I also have "ShowSuperHidden" set to 1.Okis.

Resolved.

Where is the key POR super hidden ?

BC I assume this a hotkey?? or not? Can you explain this to me you know I'm trying to learn.. thanks matehotkey?

registry key

showsuperhidden is simply another value in the "advanced" registry key. If it isn't present, create it.

personally I just change these options with windows explorer...Sorry BC I thought HKEY_ would mean a hotkey...ahh,

well it stands for Handle to the Key, I believe.

there are a few "set" keys in the registry, that act as the root of all other keys. the Constants when programming are for some reason used by regedit as well, and I GUESS the NAMES stuck.Sorry about this but can you explain 'Handle to the key'Okis

For me is just all seen for the moment.

Post back.Ok generally Virus's cannot be JPG files or music files only programme files. Thats not gospel by the way. You need to do a system restore and make sure you do a full system check something like Norton or whatever anti virus you have also may be download malware-bytes. It works for most my friend. But a virus cannot be a JPG file its impossible or generally a video file. Im no expert mate so you may wanna hang on for a better bit of advice.. Solve : My screen is blank :(?

Answer»

Well, I turned on my laptop and as it was loading, the START screen popped up for no reason. Then msn popped up because it does automatically. I went to close the start up screen but the mouse pad didn't work, so I pressed the start button on the key board but nothing happened. I made sure I had the mouse pad on, and I did, so I just assumed the screen froze, so I turned it off. I waited for a few seconds, then I pushed the power button. All the buttons on the keyboard lit up but the screen stayed blank. I waited for a couple minutes but nothing happened. So I turned it off and tried again, but still, the screen stayed blank. I thought maybe it overheated so I left it for an hour and tried again, but it still didn't turn on. The laptop had worked earlier that morning too. I had just turned it off for a few hours while I got ready for the day. I didn't change anything at all, and I have only had this laptop for a year and a half. It is an HP Pavillion. I don't know how much information you need, but I hope you can help. Thank you.Someone told me that I could have fried the wires. I used it for quite a long time LAST night, but it worked again this morning. I am going to take it into future shop if there is nothing else I can do.Is it still under warranty? Thats all you can pretty much doThank you All I had to do was take out the battery. Now is there a way to close this so that I don't take up SPACE or anything? You can tell I'm new.No problem there...we leave Topics up even after they're resolved as someone using the Search function MAY just find the answer they need...
Welcome to CH !

Solve : Unable to access URL links from Outlook Express in XP?

Answer»

After installing SP3 on a neighbor's PC, the neighbor finds that URL links no longer work in Outlook Express. I seem to recall that there are some extremely arcane settings which govern this activity, but that's the extent of my recollection. If anyone out there can point me to these settings, please post a reply to this issue. Thanks in advance.

Post Script: After posting this issue, I did what I should have done to begin with - Google it. I found the settings I was looking for. SORRY about the post - I WOULD DELETE it, but the board won't let me. This issue is closed as far as I am concerned.

Solve : weird symbols on restart?

Answer»

I am running windows xp pro on a gateway 700x COMPUTER. I upgraded my Kodak program and when I restarted instead of going from the Gateway intro to the windows start up the screen stayed black with the flashing dash in the upper LEFT hand corner, then these really WEIRD symbols popped up, there were like 13 of them followed by the flashing dash. I manually rebooted and it did it again so I rebooted, repeatedly pressed F8 and it did it again except the symbols repeated themselves down the whole left side till it got to the bottom then the flashing dash again, what the heck is this???
My son said it happened to him last week. The only symbols we recognized were an unusual A and V, two spanish e's with the dashes above them, ad two exclamation points side by side. I have encountered alot of weird stuff WORKING on my computers but this was REALLY weird, anyone have ANY idea what I am talking about??? It restarted fine the next time. I don't wanna reformat as I do not have the resource disk (my nephew gave me this pc but lost the darn disks). Thanks for any help you can give.First of all, see, if it'll happen again.Sounds like it could be bad RAM or bad cache or something along those lines.

Even in the instance where it doesn't occur all the time.

Doubtful it is related at all to the OS install, however.

What files?

Do you have an XP CD?

If so, place it in your CD ROM drive and follow the instructions below:
  • Click on Start > Run and type sfc /scannow then press Enter (note the space between scf and /scannow)
    • Let this run undisturbed until the window with the blue progress bar goes away
SFC - Which stands for System File Checker, retrieves the CORRECT version of the file from %Systemroot%\System32\Dllcache or the Windows installation source files, and then replaces the INCORRECT file.

The black screen with xp logo and the scrolling blue progress bar has no "Start" menu or "Run" command.

I can only get a start menu from safe mode. When I try the command from safe mode a command box flashes one time then vanishes. I can do this several times and the result is the same.

I can boot from CD. When I do this I get a blue screen that says Windows Setup in the upper left. Then there's a page that says:

Welcome to Setup. This portion of the the Setup program PREPARES Microsoft Windows XP to run on your computer.

To set up Windows XP now, press ENTER.

To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R.

To quit Setup without installing Windows XP, press F3.

When I try the command in the Recovery Console, I get "The command is not recognized."I'm going to move this to the Windows forum so others will see it and give some suggestions.Moved to the Microsoft Windows forum.Try Windows repair: http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htmNot SURE were I'm coming into this thread, but ..if you can get to Safe Mode why not give system restore a try?Good point.

Solve : computer doesnt see wireless network?

Answer»

Its an ACER brand computer with a built in wireless adapter. It is running XP, latest version.

Was using a different ISP before and had a linksys router. Now I switched to ATT wireless but when I disconnected the linksys router and switched to the ATT wireless router, my computer cant see my wireless connection.

Why is this HAPPENING, what should I do to get it working

Did you run the Wireless Network Setup Wizard in Control Panel ? ?
The new router NEEDS to be setup first to use it. Your card is probably still trying to acquire the OLD router...patio:
ILL try that but how do I use the network setup wizard to reconfigure the card to LOOK for the new router and not the old one

Did you recieve any instructions with the new router ? ?

NOTE" you DO NOT have to use AT&T's software to set this up properly...patio: I had received instructions with my router but i guess they got misplaced when i moved. Anyway the network setup wizard doesnt ask for anything, it just seems to search for a network on its own

when i run it, will it cause the card o recognize the new router and not the old one?

good, I plan on sticking with FAT32 for my system drive- wish I thought of it earlier, I would have just used partition magic to convert my system drive to FAT32, without needing a clean install.

Hi

I fear you misunderstood the situation.

The fact that ntoskrnl is identical to the version on your XP SP3 CD is no indication or otherwise of infection,
BUT IT PROVES YOU WERE, AND PROBABLY STILL ARE, VULNERABLE.

On 24 Oct I received this LINK :-
http://windowssecrets.com/comp/081024
This told me of a vulnerability that permits malware installation with "no interaction required from the end user". It also advised that exploits had been seen in the wild, which is why M.$ published KB958644 on 22 Oct to deal with this, and did not wait for Patch Tuesday.
I immediately emailed a warning to friends and relatives, and then permanently disconnected from the Internet until I had scanned my system, purged unwanted / temporary files, and added a fresh disc image to the archive in case Security patch KB958644 damaged my system.

I then allowed KB958644 to enter.

Consequences of KB958644 included the installation of 4 off nt*.* files, one of which was ntoskrnl.exe. All 4 files were dated 14/08/2008, suggesting the final version was tested for less than 9 weeks before M.$ panicked and did an EMERGENCY update.

The problem is NOT an infected ntoskrnl.exe. I do not know if the vulnerability is a defect in ntoskrnl.exe or some other part of the system. I am however CONFIDENT that M.$ have chosen to modify ntoskrnl.exe as one aspect of dealing with the problem, and anyone not using the latest version is vulnerable.

I have Hot-Fixes and un-installers for several versions of ntoskrnl.exe going back several years. I guess every one of them permit this exploit.

XP SP3 CD was probably issued before 22 Oct, so your ntoskrnl.exe is probably dated long before 14/08/2008, in which case you are still subject to this vulnerability.

Please note that I recognise I tend to overreact whenever I can. I like to think that this is why, after more than 30 years of computer experience, the only virii I EVER had to eliminate were the infestations with the games my son brought home from school on 5.25" floppy discs !!!

On a brighter note, congratulations on getting your Hard drive back under control.

Regards
Alan

Thanks again, I suppose.

As I said before...

how would this worm affect me after a clean install? After installing video and audio drivers by first boot (no network drivers), I got the "Disk read error", missing or corrupt ntoskrnl.exe, missing or corrupt hal.dll, etc.

Trust me, I know the processes that should run on my computer, and if I see one appear without warning or a program installation, I end it.. if it reappears, it is surely malware, and I begin my quick removal process involving using process explorer to kill the process and delete it. I often find IExplore.exe running at this point as well, and proceed to delete the hijacking dlls that have caused it to spawn without being asked.

I've also detected malware problems simply from CPU usage- winlogon, for example, which generally means I have to visit my WLNotify key in the registry and check for strange entries and remove the entries and the files.

The only thing that has EVEN come close to stumping me was a rootkit, which was quickly subdued thanks to RootKitRevealer.

Hi

I never said, nor intended to imply, that ntoskrnl.exe was infected,
only that an obsolete version shows the latest emergency security patch has not been applied.

I fully agree that any worm that previously existed will be eliminated by the clean install of Windows;
BUT without that latest emergency security patch the raw operating system will remain vulnerable, though hopefully it should have protection from any anti-virus protection and firewall.

Several times a day I get a new virus signature update from ESET.
It is nice to think they are on the ball.
It is disturbing to think they determined this new signature from a new infection Yesterday, and to wonder when the Fickle Finger of Fate will choose my computer to receive the infection that will give them information for tomorrow's signature update !!!

This is why I like to have all the protection I can get, which regrettably means accepting all relevant security patches.
That is my life style choice.
You have made a slightly different choice and are taking more responsibility for supervising your own security. That is O.K. too.

I accept that you have your computer under your control.

Regards
Alan
Yours is a much more cautious (and smart, I'll admit) route- I prefer the cold thrill of living on the bleeding edge of DANGER!

Will it Boot? Do my files still exist? WHO KNOWS!

I don't even run anti-virus or firewall software

and yet only trojans have managed to ever get into my computer so far!

But genuinely- thanks for the information on the flaw, I wouldn't have known otherwise about the flaw. Perhaps I will research it to determine just how much of a threat it poses to me, and what it enables malware to do.

Solve : Stuck at login screen?

Answer»
I have been working on a friend of a friends pc all day mainly because they have some pictures on the hard drive and don't want to LOOSE them.

It's a dell DEMINSION 3000 xp home and I am at the point when I start it up I get F2 set up or F12 then I have to click on f1 to continue. I have tried all options of logging in safe mode, last known, ETC.

It will get to the login SCREEN in about five minutes and no further from there. That is it. Any suggestions or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

ThanksI am going to try this even though I have tried it twice with pro, I am going to try home as this article suggest.

Solve : Windows freezing...?

Answer»

So, I'm running XP Media Center Edition... I have recently installed a linksys wireless adapter (which is not connecting to the internet, just to the router...) Now when I GET to the XP login SCREEN or shortly after I login.. my comptuer freezes. I lose mouse/keyboard use as well. Ctrl+alt+del is no good. I have restarted MANY times and got it to run once.. then when I tried to bring up something, XP froze again. Could SOMEONE please help me? Once I get this resolved.. I have to figure out this lame adapter.. Does anyone know if linksys adapters will only connect to linksys routers?

Thanks,
- Sir Screw -
I just went into Safe Mode and ran a spy sweep. Caught a few things. Couldn't run virus scan because my virus scan is expired. I haven't used this computer in over 1 1/2 yrs so I am trying to get it up and running again.. Not sure what is going on.. Anyway, after the sweep and reboot.. it still froze.. Before going to the login screen, I am getting a black screen with the underscore _ flashing at the top left.. not sure what is happenning there but it hangs out on that screen for a few seconds then goes to login.. LET me know if you can help.. would be much appreciated.

- Sir Screw - Can you boot OK, when you're hardwired, instead of using wireless?

Any suggestions you can give me would be greatly appreciated. I have Windows XP...I'm also not really computer savvy, so please talk to me like I'm a kid. Maybe if you use IE it has some problems and so perhaps a browser change MIGHT help. Also - how can we DEFINE ''lately"? WEEK ago - month ago? Any major changes, downloads, new apps etc?

What is your internet connection? How long had it?

Can anybody remind me how to make the security tab to appear in file properties dialog?.

What application/program are you TALKING about? What Windows version do you have?Windows XP Professional. The properties dialog BOX that appears when you right-click a file in the windows explorer...Think you mean this tab FOUND on properties of a file. This screen shot is from Windows 2000, but I think it is the same in XP. Sorry, I don't know how to turn it on.
Found it! Check and see if the registry has this:
Hive: HKEY_CURRENT_USER
Key: Software\Microsoft\windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
Name: Nosecuritytab
Type: REG_DWORD
Value: 1

That would keep the tab off. Just hack away at it, but you should have a backup of the registry just in case. I want to turn it on.

I once did it, and I didn't have to hack the registry. It was a simple task, but I don't remember what it was...Missing or No Security Tab Found in Windows XP Professional: http://www.mydigitallife.info/2006/07/19/missing-or-no-security-tab-found-in-windows-xp-professional/Thank you Broni.

Solve : Is there a reason this could have happened??

Answer»

I just had the STRANGEST thing happen, something I really like and now it is gone. I was looking at some stuff in Google Images and when I clicked onto a pic link, the window that opened up almost looked like what has been shown on TV with Windows 7. The whole screen as taken over by an interactive menu that looked 3D! All the images were lined up in three LONG rows across and I COULD click onto a pic or area and move the whole thing from side to side. It was really cool and when I hit the arrow key to go back, it was normal. I then hit the same link and it too was normal. I don't know what was happening but I really liked what I saw. Any idea on what went on? I would love to have it back. Btw, I am running XP. I also want to say that when this 3d thing happened last night, it took over the whole screen. It was not limited to the viewable SPACE within Firefox.

Thanks.--Mark Hmmm... Very strange.

What were you SEARCHING for?I was searching Google's images when that happened. I clicked onto a small image icon (pic)they had in a group of pics available on I think page 1 of about 25 and when the new window opened, the result was what I initially reported. It was dealing with a true-crime story I was researching.I'm sorry, nothing comes into my head anyway.

What browser?I USE Firefox 3.0.3I found out what happened. Check out this Firefox extension. It is like having the touch-screen technology one finds on an Iphone. It is too cool!

Solve : XP Profesional install stops my usb mouse/keyboard working?

Answer»

Hi guys, FEELING desperate now...

I have been trying for 3 days to sort this problem but the Microsoft support site, Dell support site and all related web sites seem to know about the problem but have no answers as how to solve it!!!

The history is that my Dell Dimension 5150 got infected with XPspyware 2009 through my own stupid fault and i had to use Malwarebytes to remove it, all well and good but it wiped some programmes and my computer was runing slow, so i thought i would re-install windows from the installer file located in my windows folder ( dell didn't supply the disc with the computer! ) So i did that and now it has installed all the way until i get a conflict with "the human interface device is not recognized by windows signed...."

I have turned off the usb controller in Bios settings as Microsoft suggest but then it installs to the point of entering the date and time settings, and i cant move the pointer or press enter because the mouse and keyboard aren't working!!!!!!!

I am not bothered about backing up any files, i just need to know how to get the computer working again.

Thanks in advance!!!!!!!

James.Get PS/2 mouse, and keyboard. Thanks for the idea but i dont have the ps/2 ports on the back of my computer, i only have 7 USB ports and my video card outputs.

Was wondering if there is the ability to format c: from the Bios so that i can bypass the windows install, and then do a fresh install with a friends windows disk? But if i could do all of that, will i still get the conflicts?

AAAAAAGGGGGGHHHHHHHH!

James.
Assuming your drivers are up to date. This may work, it did for me.

I have have experienced the same problem with my printers, mouse and keyboard working on USB ports but not my USB MEMORY stick or card reader and I got exactly the same error message as yourself.
I phoned my computer manufacturer's helpdesk and they told me I would have to re-format my hard disk and re-install Windows XP which I did only to find that the problem still existed.
A friend of mine suggested not only closing down my computer, removing battery if a laptop but also switching it off at the mains socket or remove the plug. Seemingly this allows any RESIDUAL current on the motherboard or any stray capacitance to discharge.
Believe it or not it worked! I now have all my USB ports and devices working as I want them.
Hope it works for you - it might be worth a try :-)
Thanks for the advice.....,

i'll try that and come back to you with results...

JamesMalwareBytes does not remove any applications...
No PS2 ports on the machine ? ?
Who is it made by ?

You can borrow an XP CD of the same ver. and Service Pack# to do a re-install.Still cant get past the "Installing Windows" section of the install. I need to know how to do fresh install from Bios without going into the XP INSTALLATION. I have an Xp cd so now need to know what to do,

Anyone out there PLEASE HELP!!!

Solve : Computer randomly restarts - SuzieQ23 had exact same problem?

Answer»

I have a Dell and Windows XP and after that I don't know what I've got.

My computer keeps restarting much like SUZIEQ23's problem...:

Quote from: SusieQ23 on October 10, 2008, 10:49:31 AM

I restarted my computer last night AND it wouldn't stop!:'( It goes to the windows start up screen then it goes to this other screen where it says " we apologize for the inconvenience, but windows did not start successfully. A recent hardware or software change might have caused this.

If your computer stopped responding, restarted unexpectedly, or was automatically shut down to protect your files and folders, choose Last Known Good Configuration to revert to revert to the most recent settings that worked.

If a previous start up attempt was interrupted due to a power failure or because the power or reset button was pressed, or if you aren't sure what caused the problem, choose Start Windows Normally.

SAFE Mode
Safe Mode With Networking
Safe Mode With Command Prompt

Last Known Good Configuration (your most rescent setting that worked)

Start Windows Normally"

I've tried all the options. NOTHING works it just keeps running the dell screen, then windows screen, then this screen, and then repeats. I have no idea what to do now. I have the XP disc too

...actually EXACTLY like that. However, I also have some stuff on my desktop that I would give anything to be able to hold on to if possible.

I'm trying to find the XP Installation CD, but my brother who is the computer genius at the house is currently deployed. Don't know that I'll be able to find it... any other possible options would be wonderful.

Thank you in advance.

Mik Ky

Did you do a Windows update recently? In order to fix this issue you will need the Operating System cd. My suggestion would be to call your OEM and they could provide you with a copy of the operating system. My brother performed a Windows Update for me about 3 or 4 months ago, but I had been having computer problems before that as well. This is the first time I've come across this, however.

The Operating System CD is the disk that installed Windows XP, right? I don't know where it is, but hopefully my brother will be getting back to me soon and letting me know where he is keeping it.

I don't know what an OEM is, but that being the case, I obviously don't know how to contact them (pathetic, isn't it?).

When my brother calls with Op. SYS. CD, I assume I'll need to re-install XP, right (I hope it's as easy as installing other programs)? Won't that delete the stuff I have--and need to keep--that's on my desktop?

Thank you so much for your quick reply.

Mik Ky
Here is by best suggestion. Being that you don't know much about computers I would suggestion taking the computer to a shop. Have them fix the problem. The problem you are currently having might be fixed by updating a firmware or it could also be a hardware issue. I don't know how much data you have in the computer or how important its to you. When did you do your last full backup?

If you reinstall the operating system it will overwrite all the information on the disk.

The term, OEM is (original equipment manufacturer)

I'm not blowing you away but I want you to be aware that you could lose all your data!!Mik Ky
Quote

We can start with Windows repair option, which will keep your data safe, but you need that Windows CD. Let us know, when you find it.I should have it soon. My brother emailed me back and I'm looking for the CD. Will report when I have it.

Thanks again.

Mik KyNo problem Not sure of your complete symptoms, but according the the quote from SusieQ23 (and you said you're having exact problem)..seems to indicate you can get to Advanced Startup Options? If so, why not use Safe Mode to boot and try System Restore? You could also use Safe Mode with command propt and run "sfc /scannow" once you have the install disc. Good Luck!I don't know how to get to advanced startup options, but I know that when I try to boot in safe mode (as per the options readily available on my screen), it just restarts and I end up at the same screen.

BUT I HAVE THE DISK NOW!

I haven't put it in yet though because I'm not sure what to expect and I don't want to start something I don't know how to finish. I'm really worried about the files on my desktop, so any forewarnings would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance. The absolute safest way to proceed would be to get your data backed up first in case something goes awry from this point on...
To do so remove the drive and hook it up in ANOTHER machine jumpered as a slave drive.
Windows on your drive does not have to be operational to do this.
Once it's in the other machine copy/move your data to it's own directory and then burn it to CD/DVD.

Tutorial Here

When you are ready to proceed with fixing the Windows install Post back and we'll walk you through it...Is this operation as simple as turning off both machines, unplugging both hard drives (one from each computer), and putting my hard drive into the other computer? When I turn on this other computer, will I have to install new stuff? I don't understand what "jumpered as a slave drive" means....

I would be happy to do this though. There is another computer (fully functional) about 5 feet from mine that will work...

Thanks

Mik KyDid you click the tutorial provided ? ?

1) You don't remove the drive on the working machine...you need it to boot to access your files.
2) Setting the jumpers is fairly easy...explained in the Tutorial. The drive in the working machine needs to be jumpered master...or if it's a choice "master w/slave present."
3) Then jumper your drive as slave and hook it up to the working machine.

You really should click on the link i provided above...

Solve : Can anyone tell my why I am not able to upgrade my media player??

Answer»

Hello, I am hoping someone can help me with this? I have an HP Pavilion 061 PC098A-ABA M1070N and its running Windows XP Media Center Edition Service Pack 3 (build 2600). All I wanna do is upgrade my Media Player to the new 11 and it won't happen. I receive the following MESSAGE from the download attempt:

Unsupported Operating SYSTEM. To install Windows Media Player 11, your computer must be running Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 or later.
So I went to the Media Center Web SITE and I can not find anything on how to upgrade Media Center so I can upgrade to Media Player 11. I have even spent a lot of TIME searching on-line for ANY info regarding upgrading from WMC 4 to WMC 5 and I swear I am coming up with nothing. Not even any help from Microsoft.

Can anyone help? I hope someone out there knows something about this? Oh by the way I also tried contacting HP about this and nothing. They insisted I had to TAKE this up with Microsoft.

Thanks
NINO
Which Media Center Edition are you running? WMP11 cannot be installed on Media Center Edition 2002 or 2004. I don't think you can update to Edition 2005, it requires a completely new Edition to be installed.

However, please read this..

Solve : Still locked out! Forgot logon ID AND password..help!?

Answer»

Hi

I am sure you will get all the help you need from here to make a clean start, which I believe needs no knowledge of login names and passwords etc.
I am in the fortunate position of never having needed to do this, so I will not offer advice myself.

You may well get assistance with password cracking etc. from other sites, BUT
whilst you are downloading whatever they offer to fix your problem,
they may also be "donating" malware that will SERIOUSLY damage your own computer and possibly expose your private data / credit card numbers etc. - you could end up with two useless computers and an emptied BANK account.

I agree with Alan. The forum policy (which I now see, thank you) does say that the forum will provide only "limited help". But the link Dusty provided is there, and it seems like quite a bit of help to me!

Quote from: msrachel on November 04, 2008, 10:21:56 AM

I will try to use the administrator log on ID and the site that Dusty provided and see if that works. If it doesn't, I understand that nobody on here is GOING to TELL me so thanks for your time. I'll keep searching sites until I get what I need....thanks again.

I'm not quite sure what you would like somebody to tell you. Short of providing an actual program that cracks Windows passwords, I doubt there is much anybody on this list could do beyond the advice already given.

Please let us know how you make out.

EdAnother reason, besides those already discussed, for wanting to crack an admin password is when kids at school or employees at work want to bypass policies set by school/business system ADMINS so they can do forbidden things with the IT systems in those places, ranging from pranks (ejecting CD trays, remote shutdowns) to spying on colleagues & fellow students, and running forbidden software. The forum takes a very dim view of that kind of thing.

destructive recovory going fine until reformating phase was 81% done.
A pop-up said: "Problem in extractin process: hp/bin/SETUP/SETUP/COMMON/SYMSHARE/ASEL.DAV couldn't be opened.

I had to press OK to verify that I understood this message before the formatting

"CHKDSK is VERIFYING files

Below this message VARIOUS LETTERS and symbols popped up as if the computer was attempting to repair something.

The black screen disappeared and I was able to complete the destructive recovery.
Should I worry about these MESSAGES or attempt to repair them? My computer

Solve : Windows XP service pack 2 - nightmare!?

Answer»

Hi everyone
I have had my packard bell pc for about 2 YEARS, I bought it from a friend. after I bought it it prompted me to DOWNLOAD service pack 2 which i did and it promptly crashed my computer and it wouldnt do anything - it wont go beyond the grey packard bell loading screen. my friend then told me not to do it again as it had happened to him too (he is very pc literate!). so he managed to reset the whole computer and i STARTED again.

since then i just havent bothered about it, but now i cant download the new version of itunes unless i update the service pack. i know its service pack 3 now but i am too SCARED to download it incase the same thing happens. as i now have loads of stuff on my computer i dont want to lose.

any advice very welcome, bear in mind im not very good with computer language! i have windows xp professional in case it makes a difference.

Thank you!!If you don't want to lose your files, back them up.
I use a USB connected external hard drive.

You probably need to use something else because :-

If your computer did not like SP1, it will go ballistic with iTunes !!!

Two weeks ago my computer start up took 2 minutes instead of 10 Seconds.

I restored previous disc images from my external hard drive, and even those now took 2 minutes.
Suspecting an internal Hard drive problem, I ran CHKDSK, and it found (and fixed) 3 different errors in each of 1299 files.
Start up then took only 10 seconds.

Half an hour later our road lost electricity. My laptop continued running on batteries, but the External hard drive (which was in use) had no battery and shut down - without the benefit of "Safely Remove Hardware".
Once back to normal, the Event log showed, as I expected, a "ftdisk" error due to this crash. CHKDSK found and fixed 3 errors.

Before the 1299 * 3 errors, my daughter's new IPOD was plugged in, and that IMMEDIATELY caused the External USB Hard drive (on a different port) to crash, and the event log recorded a ftdisk error.

I may be wrong, but the next time my daughter wants to plug her IPOD on my machine I intend to run CHKDSK before and after, and fully expect to obtain evidence that an IPOD does 1300 times more damage than an electricity failure with open files.

So, if you want to use an IPOD, you should consider backing up to something other than a USB hard drive. (And may God have mercy on your soul !!! ).

Solve : Computer won't boot past XP splashscreen after changing network settings?

Answer»

Greetings all!

SORRY to make my first post here a request, but I am in a pickle and need some pro advice.

Here's the problem: I networked my desktop PC to an existing network, confirmed that I was able to access the internet, then I changed the "Shared Documents" folder to a sharable state, restarted the computer to affect the change in the network settings and now it won't get past the "Windows XP" splashscreen. The computer POST's, Window's tries to load, the splashscreen displays for about 8 seconds then the computer reboots itself. Over and over, endlessly.

None of the safe mode option's will boot, the previous known good configuration doesn't boot, and, obviously, the start Window's normally option doesn't work. If I would have known that TURNING on the sharable folder would have caused this much headache, I would have left well enough alone and been satisfied with a working internet connection. I can think of nothing that will FIX this problem, so I turn to you guys. Any help is greatly appreciated!

System specs:

Asus P5B mobo (using on-board NIC, sound)
Intel Core2Duo E6700 2.66GHz
WD 250G HD SATA
NVidia 7900GT vid card
Windows XP Professional SP3
3.0G RAM
**Update**

I tried the Windows XP install repair using this guide: http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm#RI with no success. However, I think i stumbled upon the reason for the computer to not boot up. The problem seems to be that it's not FINDING the XP install to boot from. I tried to rebuild the bootcfg, and it gave a message that there was no installation to be found. Looks like I'll be wiping out the partition and starting over.

Solve : Computer won't boot.?

Answer»

So my friend's computer won't boot properly.
When we start it, it says (translated from danish)

"windows was unable to start because this file is damaged or has been removed:
\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM

You can attempt to repair this file by starting windows installation using the installation program cd-rom. choose "r" in the first screen picture to repair."

when i insert the windows xp cd-rom and tells it to boot from the cd-rom, it responds with

"Boot from CD: ...

CDBOOT: Couldn't find NTLDR."

and then it redirects me to the first problem.

i asked my brother for help, and he told me to try to boot from a LINUX cd. When i did that, it recognized the cd as a linux cd and told me its info.

but it just said " cannot boot from this cd. please try a BIOS update".

so what should i do?

Sorry to hear that, but the disc with the operating system is really the most important tool to have on hand whey you're attempting to repair issues with the operating system. so i am supposed to like plug the disk into another pc and reformat it?By disc I meant CD/DVD - the installation media. You can USE it to perform repair and troubleshooting procedures to the MALFUNCTIONING operating system.but dude, i already did it with 2 different known working CDs. so that is not the problem.Have you tried swapping the CD drive with a known working drive?well no, but i am quite sure the cd drive is working, because it was ABLE to RECOGNIZE the linux cd i inserted - plus i had installed a game through it a couple of days earlier.

Solve : HDD letter confusion...is it serious???

Answer»

I have a windows XP pro SP3 machine (Asus 5Q PRO mobo) with 1 IDE HDD 250Gb and 2 SATA HDD connected to the DriveXpert RAID ports on the mobo. When installing W-XP I have called the IDE disk "Windows" and the array "DATA"
It worked fine, until I got a message that NTLDR was missing, so I fixed it using Windows Recovery, I copied the NTLDR and NT DETECT files from the CD. to the c:\windows drive. Now, when I start up, it says "boot.ini file incorrect, starting up using C: Windows" and it starts up just fine. When I tried to rebuild the boot file it would not do it (disk error) but chkdsk revealed no errors.

But the strange thing is that if I look at "my computer"or when I do a disk check or whatever, it says that the D drive is Windows and the C drive is data. I am not sure that this happened after the NTLDR problem, it was probably the first time that I noticed it.

So, in the boot sequence it REFERS to C:Windows and when I use the MAP command in Windows Recovery it states C:Windows and D:Data, but when I do a chkdsk or look at My Computer, is says: C:Data and D:Windows! 3 questions for the experts:

1-what's happening, how is this possible??
2-is it serious or can I leave it this way?
3-Do I need a boot.ini or can I leave it as is? (single-boot only)

Thanks beforehand for your insights

have you tried remapping drive letters using Disk management?

you should attempt to create a valid boot.ini manually... Can you list your current boot.ini contents (it is a hidden file, so make sure to enable that view). As for if it's serious or not, no not really. Annoying maybe, but not serious. I reloaded an HP one time that had an integrated front-panel card reader and the Windows OS drive turned out as "H" because of it.

As far as I have researched one cannot change the drive letter of the system drive after the OS has been installed to it. I looked into the matter for the afore-mentioned HP, to no avail.

You can change the drive letter of your data ("C") drive though. If you know where disk management is in XP, then that's where you can do it. If you are unfamiliar with disk management, then just drop us a line and we'll direct you to it .

One thing you should be aware of is that most installers will pick the "C" drive (data in your case) as it's default install location. If you want to install most of your applications to your data drive ("C") anyway, then great! Leave it "C" and you will have a feature that most of us multi-drive users lack.

If you do not want to install most of your applications to your data drive, you can change the drive letter of your data drive "C" to any letter after "D" and installers should pick "D" (your system drive) as it's default install location.

Oh, one last thing. You should be aware that if you have installed any programs to "C" (your data drive), if you change the drive letter the programs installed on "C" will most likely break (because all the sudden they don't know where they are). So, before changing the drive letter of "C" un-install all programs from it and then re-install them after changing the letter.Simple answer. Leave it alone and just use it.
I have played with boot.ini and it was very educational, but if you can resist the urge to change it, then resist, resist, resist.Thank you all for your replies. I really appreciate it.

@BC_Programmer: can't remap the system disk (d) so I will leave it.
There doesn't seem to be a boot.ini file (if I look at the dir of both disks via the recovery console, I can't find one) is that possible?

@EQB: thanks for your elaborate answer. I like the "feature" that my prog files are on the Data disk, so no problem there. My only worry is that I see a different situation when I look via Recovery (C:Windows, D:Data); are you saying this is normal after drives have been remapped? ie will you always see c:\windows in the recovery mode? I would think that a Windows view on the volumes should be equal to what you see in the recovery mode. By the way, I don't give a much about it as long as I don't run into big issues later on.

@Geek: your solution is very appealing and I will definitely change nothing, if the expert opinion is that there is no harm in it. BTW, is there a way to get rid of the "incorrect boot.ini" message without actually changing the file itself?

thanks again, guys (and girls???)If your computer boots up fine with the drive letters out of whack, leave it alone as everyone else says.

If there are problems, then you can change the letters around via registry:

1) BACK UP YOUR **** FIRST! Avoid computer lobotomies and do this important step!

REGISTRY:
Select "Computer", click File -> Export. Save that to a flash drive or other removable media.

BOOT.INI:
Also back up your current boot.ini file.

SYSTEM RESTORE:
...and just for ****s and giggles, create a System Restore point as well.

One last thing: restart your computer in some type of mode that allows you to access C:\Windows\System32\config easily (BartPE, WinPE 2.1, Ultimate Boot CD, DOS enviroment, recovery console, etc.). Copy everything in C:\Windows\System32\config to your flash drive of *** saving as well.

2) Restart back in Windows and:
Start -> Run -> regedit -> click OK.

3) Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE -> System -> MountedDevices.

Your drive letters are the keys that are labeled "\DosDevices\C:', "\DosDevices\D:", etc.

4) To change the boot drive letter, you need to right-click "\DosDevices\D:", and left-click "Rename." Change it to something unused for now (like "\DosDevices\Q:").

5) Now rename "\DosDevices\D:" to "\DosDevices\C:"

6) Now rename "\DosDevices\Q:" to "\DosDevices\D:"

7) Close the registry.

Check your boot.ini file. It should look something like this:

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

If it looks like above, leave it alone. If not, change it to this (this is why I asked you to back up your boot.ini).

9) Restart your computer. If that fixes the problem, great! If not, then boot into the recovery environment you used in Step #1 (BartPE, WinPE 2.0, UBCD, Recovery Console, DOS, etc.) and restore your backup of C:\Windows\System32\Config as well as your copy of boot.ini, restart your computer, and deal with the drive letter madness. Simple answer. Leave it alone and just use it.

If your computer boots up fine with the drive letters out of whack, leave it alone as everyone else says.

I disagree.
You will find that wrongly designated drive ASSIGNMENTS although SEEMING to be just a 'minor pain' will run like that for (insert anyone's guess here ) then all of a sudden one day you cannot access any of your drives and/or data...

ANDY you need to locate the boot.ini file and post it here.
Instead of using the RC use Windows search instead...as suggested above make sure show hidden files and folders is set to on...Thanks Patio and killerb for your responses.

@patio: I did a search (my computer, include system folders, subdirs, hidden files) on boot and boot.ini---> no files found. It does not seem to be there. Is there a way to create a new one?
@killerb: killerb, this sounds like a good solution. I think I will give it a try.

thanks!BOOT.INI is in the root of the "C" drive. But in your case we are not sure which is the real "C" drive. As for the recovery console, it is a separate thing. Some things that are "under the hood" in Windows can confuse anyone. The recovery console will put the MBR and NTLDR on the drive it calls "C" no matter what you think it shroud be. Also, at some point in time you may have changed the 'active' drive or partition in your system. There should be one. If two drives are active, the BIOS takes a pick of which one it likes. I am not making this up. I often use two drives and several partitions. Lots of fun. When you boot from the second drive, because the BIOS said so, it becomes the C drive in Windows. But if the first drive is the choice of the BIOS and there is not all the right stuff on the first partition, even if it is the active part ion, the NTLDR will find windows on the second partition if it is not on the first. Then Windows is on the D drive! Is this confusing? I just got started. I love to dig into this stuff and after all is said, it does not really matter a whole lot as long as you make regular backups.Which you should do anyway.

Im confused about how BURNING an image onto a CD will help my computer?
It'll CREATE bootable CD. You put CD in, restart computer, wait for a message "Press any KEY to boot from CD", press that key, and run memtest for couple of hours.
In order to see what type of HARD drive you have, I need your computer service tag#. Post it back, and proceed with memtest.Ok, I burned memtest onto a DISK. But when I put the disk in, I cant open memtest.

Do you think I would be better off taking the laptop in somewhere to be fixed? Any idea how much that would cost?Since we don't know (yet) what's wrong, it's impossible to say how much it'll cost.

Did you restart computer with memtest CD in? Did you see a message "Press any key to boot from CD"?

No.
Unfortunately the OEM's have managed to butcher the OS CD's so badly they normally are useless in a repair situation...
Try RUNNING sfc /SCANNOW from one of them and you'll see.

Solve : Virus Scan Warning?

Answer»

Hi all,
New to this game so just a brief query. Have run a scan using AVIRA antivir and it has come up with a warning saying - C:\Pagefile.sys. unable to open. Is this any problem or can I safely ignore it? thanks in anticipation. JEB.Hi

Pagefile.sys is a fundamental system file. It is not of itself a virus.

It is supposed to be a virtual memory overflow when the O.S. runs out of RAM, so I would expect any DECENT anti-virus to DETECT a virus BEFORE it gets flushed from RAM to Pagefile.sys.

XP is quite selfish, so it does not allow users to open Pagefile.sys.

Either AVIRA has privileged access to Pagefile.sys when properly INSTALLED, and something went wrong for you, or they ought to know better than to try !!!

I am sure that expert assistance will come by soon - otherwise you could try AVIRA support.

Regards
Alan
It's normal.
Pagefile.sys is part of the Virtual memory management. This file is locked by the operating system and there is no SECURITY issue involved with pagefile.

A big thanks to Alan_BR and Broni for their prompt replies. Glad to know I have nothing to be concerned about. I can safely do my USUAL blundering. Gr8 to be in the presence of genius! Cheers. JEB."Usual blundering".....i like that !

You'll do fine. We'll be here... Stop by anytime.

Solve : Security Patch software Download junk - can I help it go away ??

Answer»

Before I permit a Patch Tuesday update I clean out old files I no longer NEED, and archive a disk IMAGE just in case their fixes damage my system.

Once the Patch is installed and still works after a few reboots I would like to archive another disk image. Unfortunately I can only fit 22 images on my external drive, so I have to wait a week or two for Windows to clean up after itself and purge several hundred MBytes dumped by the update in C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download\

I do not understand why it is not purged immediately it has been installed.

How can I speed it up ?
Would I be lucky if I disconnect from Internet time sources and set the date forward one month and reboot the computer a few times ?
And how many times should I reboot.

The above is something which generally annoys me every month.

Additionally, a SPECIFIC annoyance that his broken this camel's back :-

A few days ago M.$. announced an emergency patch fix to deal with a new threat that could install itself, but unlike anything previously known this threat could install without any user interaction.

I now find that they modified the code 14 August, and downloaded 16 different version and variants. There are 4 different executables held in :-
C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download\e76b316b6389286fbb342d033e63f1ba\SP3GDR
Focusing on just one of them :- ntoskrnl.exe 2,189,184 14/08/2008 16:11:10
this also appears with the same date but different sizes and times in sister folders ...\SP3QFE and ...\SP2GDR and ...\SP2QFE

The ...\SP3GDR version has been installed in C:\Windows\system32.
"Spare" copies are also in C:\Windows\system32\dllcache and C:\Windows\Driver Cache\i386.
Why so many "spare" copies ?

The ...\SP3QFE version has been copied to C:\WINDOWS\$hf_mig$\KB956841\SP3QFE
Why ?
Is this Plan "B" ready for when Plan "A" breaks the system, or ready for when hackers defeat Plan "A" ?

I assume that ...\SP2GDR and ...\SP2QFE are for people who have not progressed beyond SP2. What about people who stuck at SP1 - are their defences to be left WIDE open ?

In addition to ntoskrnl.exe, there are also ntkrnlpa.exe, ntkrnlmp.exe, and ntkrpamp.exe.

Finally, I observe that earlier versions of ntoskrnl.exe also appear in
C:\WINDOWS\$hf_mig$\KB890859\SP2QFE and KB929338 and KB931784.
These 3 are dated 2005, 2006, and 2007.
Is it my responsibility to purge Hot Fixes, and how long should I retain Hot fixes before purging ?

Sorry for the double post. I started this post in this forum, but WHILST previewing etc. the Internet stuttered and my post vanished, but the browser forward and back buttons restored the text which I posted. I have just realised that due to internet confusion my original post got sent into the virus forum by mistake.

Solve : RECYCLE BIN PROBLEM?

Answer»

Whenever i send anything from my PC to any storage device, it create a copy and sends it to recycle bin. Please help. Wow, that's a weird one. Now when you say "send to any storage device", how exactly are you moving the file? Drag-n'-drop? Copy-paste? Cut-paste? Right-click > Send-to?

Also, what storage devices are we talking about exactly? USB? Firewire? eSATA? Are they external Hard-drives? Thumb-drives? CD-ROM drives?through cut & paste

mostly to a cell phoneCUT and paste !!!

CUT implies that you are not only going to COPY READY for a paste, BUT that in addition you want the original version DELETED - and it is not unknown for a DELETED file to actually get moved to the recycle bin.

Why not use COPY and paste

Alan
Heh, no need to shout Alan.

Thing is, cut-and-paste on most PCs does not send files the recycle bin. I just tried it on my machine to make sure this was the case, and none of my cut files go to the recycle bin, they just move to the new location (though in all fairness I didn't have a cell phone to use as a test. I substituted a USB thumb-drive for the phone).

I do believe it is related to the method of moving files however. As a test, if you cut a file on your local hard-drive and paste it in another location on your hard-drive does it still move a copy to the recycle bin?EQB

I did not shout. I was emphasizing the use of COPY instead of CUT.

I very carefully included the word "implies". The actual default of whether it really deletes may depend upon the Operating System and version. And if it deletes this may transfer it to the recycle bin.

If a file is selected in Windows Explorer then the "DEL" key will probably move it to the recycle bin - unless the "ALT" key was held down.

My experience of Windows is that it does what it does, and it is affected by PATCH Tuesdays, the phase of the moon, and I know not what else!!!
I therefore believe that whilst "cut" will not normally dump a copy into the recycle bin, it could happen.

There are two ways to cut, with various results, probably influenced by destination.
Using xplorer2 (dual pane alternative to Windows Explorer) I selected :-
Source folder C:\Documents and Settings\Dad\My Documents\My Received Files (NTFS)
Destination H:\New\2008_10_14\## (FAT32 - external USB hard drive)

I selected 1 *.rtf file from the source, right click to context menu and clicked on "cut"
I selected the destination folder, right click to context menu and clicked on "paste"
Results :- target file added to destination and deleted from source folders.

I selected 2 *.EXE files from the source, and used Ctrl'X to "cut"
I selected the destination folder, and used Ctrl'V to "paste"
Result :- target file added to destination folder.
the target file was not deleted from source folder.

Context Menu Cut then Paste deletes the source file
Ctrl'X Cut then Ctrl'V paste does not delete the source.
Either way, nothing went to the recycle bin - this time !!!

Context Menu Cut then Ctrl'V Paste - not tested, life is too short
Ctrl'X Cut then Context Menu Paste - not tested, life is too short
I do not know the results of such mix and match, but Windows no longer surprises me !!!

I carefully chose the above source destination to avoid the evil eye of System Restore, otherwise the act of deleting any *.exe would add it to the current Restore Point.

n.b. I can use the Context Menu to do other things, such as view the "properties" of a 100 MByte *.exe. This has a severe penalty - a 30 second delay before right click does anything, and 100 Mega Bytes lost from free space on my Hard-drive, all because System Restore is paranoid and thinks I might intend to "Rename" or "Delete" the file, and it does not trust itself to respond in time so it adds a copy into the current Restore Point.
This suggests to me that I should also not trust it to be quick enough if I simply select the file and hit the DEL key.

Summary - I admit that nothing appears in my recycle bin when I use two different Cut and Paste combinations, but there are two more combinations I have not tested. Additionally, I have excluded System Restore from any influence - but use of a different source folder might alter everything. And if the "Cut" file is under Windows File Protection that is a whole new can of worms.

Finally, my C:\ is NTFS, and H:\ is FAT32
I could have chosen my destination as K:\ which is NTFS
Some people have Windows XP on FAT32.

Sometimes I have a definite answer for a problem with Windows,
often I can suggest possibilities,
but my answers and possibilities are like raindrops COMPARED to the oceans of problems that come with Windows.

Regards
Alan
I am pretty sure Cut and Paste does not move anything to the Recycle Bin.

Creator147, what Operating System is this and has this always happened?Alan_BR,

Ah, my bad. I misinterpreted your comment. I apologize.EQB That is OK.

Carbon
I agree with you that Windows seems to Cut and paste without putting a copy into the recycle bin.

I trust in your judgement - I have less faith in what Windows might do on a bad day !!!
If I trusted my belt as much as I trust Windows, I would not leave the house without two pairs of trousers, each with belt plus braces, and a great big overcoat for good measure !!!

I was not there when the Abacus was invented,
but I saw the birth of wonderful CPM,
and its ugly sister MSDOS.
Unfortunately marketing defeated technology.
Then we got Windows - but no Explorer, instead there was a "File manager".

I remember that File Manager took a long time to drag and drop "MOVE" a file from one folder to another, because it first took file clusters from the free space chain and wrote to them a duplicate file in the destination folder, after which a fairly quick Delete in which it rewrote the directory information to append the deleted file clusters to a free space chain. In effect "MOVE" was identical to "CUT" (Delete) followed by "PASTE". Simply deleting a file took much less time.

Windows Explorer is different. Delete takes much longer than a drag and drop "MOVE" (especially on a floppy disc.) It seems to "MOVE" in a more intelligent fashion. It leaves the file in its original clusters, and simply alters the directory information. It has the same end result as File Manager, but does not perform any Cut/Delete and Paste operations.
This ONLY applies if the MOVE is WITHIN the same partition - otherwise it is a far more tedious and lengthy Cut and Copy/Paste operation.

It is no surprise to me that Cut and Paste within the same partition is converted into an intelligent MOVE revision of the directory information, and nothing goes to the recycle bin because if you realise you should not have deleted it you still have the original in a different folder and available for copying back.

It is no surprise to me that "results are undefined" when Windows does a Cut and Paste from one partition to another - i.e. you get a copy in the destination partition, but whether or not the original is retained or deleted from the source partition depends upon whether or not Keyboard Ctrl'X/V or Mouse Context menu was used.
Windows never does the same thing twice if it can think of a different way to spoil your day !!!

When Cut and Paste from one partition to another results in the original being deleted from the source partition, it would be reasonable to expect deletion to be equivalent to using the DEL key - moving it to the recycle bin - instead it is like a SHIFT DEL operation which destroys it forever.
No surprise to me - optimum action by Windows to spoil your day !!!

Incidentally, my apologies for any confusion caused by my reference in the previous post to ALT DEL - I actually meant SHIFT DEL - but distractions happen when typing.

Incidentally, how many recycle bins are there ?
I have observed that my Desktop Recycle bin is empty, if I log out and my daughter logs in her Desktop Recycle bin still has what she previously deleted and has not yet emptied (in-spite of repeated requests!!!)
Windows Explorer SHOWS me that my single internal drive has two NTFS partitions C:\ and D:\
( I am also aware of some sort of hidden restore partition).
Windows Explorer shows that C:\Recycled holds the files which appear in the Desktop Recycle bin. It also shows C:\RECYCLER which holders 4 subfolders. I have the impression that these correspond to the recycle bins in my profile + 3 other profiles I can explore, and that my daughter's recycle bin is excluded because I have no access to any part of her profile. Are there any other "system" type Recycle bins that are also hidden from me ?

Regards
Alan
