Solve : Weird key flooding?

Answer»

Hello,

A few weeks ago my numpad 4 key started flooding a random number of times whenever i pressed it. When playing games, the arrow keys would also flood.

The keyboard was a ps2 type. To see if the motherboard or the keyboard were the problem, i bought a brand new usb keyboard - still the same problem. This told me that the ps2 keyboard was fine and it was less likely that the motherboard was broken.

A friend SUGGESTED ESET antivirus and firewall suit. Although it didn't detect any viruses/ keyloggers it stopped the arrow keys from flooding in game. But not the numpad 4.

So, i reformatted my pc - problem still didn't go away. Also, today it's started sending 4 along with other keys, however it's not doing it now.

My CPU temp is normal, CPU voltage is normal, CPU usage is normal, RAM usage is normal, pagefile usage is normal. I *think* i tried it in safemode and i didn't get any flooding.

Are there any more TESTS i can do to find the problem?Sounds like you may have a motherboard problem, as i expect you have already guessed. If it were a motherboard problem, why would only my keyboards be dysfunctional but none of my other hardware?Because on the motherboard is a keyboard controller chip.
After the format and clean install did you remember to re-install the MBoard drivers ? ?
If you did and the problem still persists then Dias is probably right about the board...*censored*. Well it is a cheap piece of crap so it's expected. I did install the drivers btw.Are there perhaps updated chipset / motherboard drivers which you may download and then install?I agree. It sounds like the motherboard's ability to interpret keyboard signals is going out. The fact that you're getting this with both PS/2 and USB keyboards confirms that it's not the keyboards or ports screwing up, but something further down the line.

As Aegis suggested, you could try updated drivers. It might HELP, but I'm guessing it won't.I doubt they've updated the drivers EVEN once, being such a cheap motherboard. And tbh i need a new processor, which would need a new motherboard anyway.

Thanks for the help everyone.I upgraded to Win 7 a few months ago and so far so weird key flooding. So as I suspected it was most likely a bug with Windows xp.Thanks for STOPPING back to give us an update...

Solve : Disabling the F3 key on a laptop?

Answer»

Hi,

We have a laptop with an annoying habit. When just sitting there with no one touching it, search windows keep popping up.

I have scanned this PC for both malware and viruses but it is a clean machine. So, there is one conclusion we here have come to. The F3 key must be a little dodgy. It is probably GIVING out SPURIOUS signals which result in search windows appearing.

I have LOOKED on google to try to find a way of totally disabling this F3 key. However, I can only seem to find solutions for disabling F3 in internet explorer. They don't AFFECT the F3 key when the desktop is being displayed.

Can ANYONE tell me how to completely disable the F3 key at all times?

Solve : Computer doesn't recognize new hard disk?

Answer»

In an earlier post; Dell refuses to start after battery replacement. I removed one of the dell's hard disks and put it in my siemens/hitachi.starts up fine but doesn't show that there's another hard DISK. Should i remove/move those whiter plastic 'bridges' to different pins to make it slave /master?It should be jumpered as slave if it is a secondary drive...

Cabling:

MB===================================Master=========Slave.

Also...double check your primary drive...some need to be jumpered master/w slave when a 2nd drive is added...

PS. You shouldn't try to boot to the 2nd drive since it came from another machine if you have a version of Windows newer than WinME.Thank you for your time patio..the problem is that there are /is label on BACK of hard disk with symbols that i know not much about. It's international i guess but i am in sweden. So you write that it should look like you wrote: MB master...slave Is that where I put the little white plugs? please forgive my ignorance.I APPRECIATE very much your helpNo...that is how the cable is setup INSIDE the machine...
motherboard============================master drive======then slave drive...

Here is a picture of a common jumper setting:

Keep in mind all drives are not setup the same way...
Check the manuf. site for more info for each drive. This is a wide grey ribbon cable connecting the drives ...correct ? ?Yes, Patio..Thank you very, very much for all the time that you TOOK to help me. All is fine now. You are best!Stop by anytime...

Solve : 1. system restore 2, search?

Answer»

1. When I access system restore in WINDOWS XP, all I get is the heading "system restore" the rest of the page is blank which means I cannot see restore points.
2. When I access windows search, the panel asking for search criteria is blank meaning I cannot enter a search subject. 1. The following links look very promising... Please note, the fix for "blank" system restore dialog will probably fix "blank" search dialog as it reregisters "jscript.dll" file.

2. Reference(s):
a. System Restore opens to a blank window? - start here
B. System Restore opens to a blank window? - related article and fix
c. Several dialog boxes are blank - possible search dialog fix

Solve : Email Parser?

Answer»

Is anyone out there using the email parser, Process Them. I have DOWNLOADED the free trial version and currently testing it using Microsoft Outlook. For the price, I find the software easy to configure and it certainly is not COMPLICATED. However I found some limitations with the trial version, one is, it cannot process emails larger than 6 KB. I am hoping that this is just the LIMITATION of the trial version. I have checked the internet for reviews and blogs on both the software and the company, Kadmy. I found 1 bad review but nothing else. It?s hard to make a decision based on 1 review.

I appreciate any help or FEEDBACK regarding this product?

Solve : Max Ram + Video Card Causing Problems.?

Answer» OK so I have two 1gb sticks of ram both are Kingston and new without errors. My motheboard supports up to 2gb ram. 2Gb of ram runs fine without a video CARD installed. I have tried 2 different Nvidia cards and have gotten the same problem when I use 2Gb ram. Previous card was 256k and my present is NVIDIA GeForce 6600 GT 128k ram. I have updated all drivers. Played with Bios but I am noob with that. With the 2Gb of ram installed and GPU I get BSOD ram error msg. What I guess is the ram on the GPU is PUTTING me over the limit or something.

Any suggestions or solutions are greatly appriciated thanks.

Solve : Windows XP BSOD?

Answer»

I've been narrowing down my issue. Even though it was a Machine check exception, I narrowed it down that the BSOD only OCCURED when JAVA was being in use. Did some GOOGLING and it turns out it's some kind of conflict with java and nvidia graphics cards causing BSOD. So I got rid of the up to date Nvidia drivers and installed the ones on the cd that came with my card. My problem no longer EXISTS. I just thought I'd SHARE this with everyone.Interesting. Thanks for posting back NP, and yea I found it very interesting as well. If they conflict with each other, I guess I can SEE how drivers can cause hardware failure.

Solve : Multiple Gateways?

Answer»

Hi I've 2 network connections in my local machine and I would like to use both of them concurrently. How can I archieve the following:

1. Route all DESTINATIONS with the IP address 192.168.X.X (eg. 192.168.0.1, 192.168.254.254, ... not sure should I include the ones below) using local machine DHCP assigned IP address 192.168.8.128 with gateway 192.168.8.254

2. Route other destinations IP address using local machine DHCP assigned IP address 192.168.254.52 with the gateway IP address 192.168.254.1

Please advise, thanks!what you need is to create a static route for the 192.168.8.0 network.

The default gateway will remain as 162.168.254.1 as that is the route all other traffic should go out.
You can enter multiple gateways in Windows but it will only use them to load balance, it won't use one for one network one for another etc.

if you're using windows, open a DOS box and:

route add 192.168.8.0 255.0.0.0 192.168.254 metric 3

it's in the FORMAT: route add "network address" "subnet mask" "default gateway" metric 3 is the "cost" of the route

hope that helps.

Hi wonkey_donkey, some clarifications here.

1. Why is it 192.168.8.0 only? Does that cater for all destinations with IP address 192.168.X.X, for eg. 192.168.1.0?

2. Why is the subnet mask 255.0.0.0? Shouldn't it be 255.255.255.0 for network class C?

3. I changed the route command that you've provided to this:

route add 192.168.0.0 mask 255.255.255.0 192.168.8.254 metric 3

But it's does not work, I cannot ping a machine with the IP address 192.168.1.8.

So you have two network cards in your PC? If this is the case then you can assign different default gateways and different IP SETTINGS to each card without any problem. But if you want to communicate between them, then you'll need SOMETHING to route the traffic between the two networks.

Can you explain what you're trying to do and what's connected to each of the cards?

if the end goal here is to get better speed then it's a vain pursuit.Quote from: wonkey_donkey on May 20, 2009, 05:04:56 AM

No. The reason is due to there are stricter firewall access rights in one gateway compared to the other.

Solve : Xp professional 64 bit SWF wallapaper? is it possible?

Answer»

hello and thank you to anyone who can help me with this i am RUNNING Windows XP professional 64-bit i have messed with the Regedit so that i can get that web tab back in the customize desktop so i can put in a what ever and have it as my background/wall paper. but when i want to put a SWF such as http://us.media.blizzard.com/1901200114/_flash/frontpage.swf i save it as a swf and what not not i get it all good but when i click apply all i get is a white box that just sits there. i have EVERYTHING updated on my comp so no worries on that

thank you if you can help
best regardsWhich 64bit version are you running ? ?
From what i've SEEN the 64bit versions do not need a regedit to enable this feature....
Did you backup the registry before applying the changes ?well its in my SUbject for the post its XP pro 64 bit
and no the web tab was not there i had to edit the regedit
and no i did not back them upAre you aware their are different versions of Vista 64bit ? ?are you aware that i am not running vistaI wasn't until just now...sorry.its ok man....but do you have any idea why its just a white square in my screen when i click applythe WEB page ALLOWS you to place WEB pages as backgrounds. Shockwave flash files are not web pages. make an HTML page with it embedded.

Another problem might be the lack of a 64-bit Adobe flash control.tried that all i get is a bunch of jibber jabberthe desktop is 64-bit. you want an SWF background. there is NO 64-bit control for displaying SWFs. THIS is why you get a "white box".gotcha and i was kinda THINKING that...something was wrong with the flash player but thank you anyway

thank you for your time

Solve : How to remove start-up screen asking me which operating system I want to start??

Answer»

I recently did a repair using my Win XP Pro disk. I set BIOS to boot from the disk, did the repair, and switched BIOS back. When I boot up now, I get the following message:

Please select operating system to start
Microsoft Windows XP Profesional
Microsoft Window Recovery Console

It shows up with a 30 second clock counting down towards zero and gives me the option to use the arrow keys to choose which system to use and then click Enter. My keyboard does not respond during the time that screen is up: neither the arrow keys or the "enter" key, so I have to wait an endless 30 seconds until this procedure finishes and it boots into XP.

Before the repair, I used to see this screen, but then the computer would continue and automatically boot up without the countdown. How do I get rid of this annoying screen?I gotta ask a really obvious question: you haven't left the Windows disk in the optical drive, have you?

Go to System properties>Advanced>Startup and Recovery settings>Uncheck time to display list of operating SYSTEMS, click OK.Actually Karnac since he has the RC installed...which is a great idea...(more people should do it for repair options ) he can just set the delay time to something more reasonable....i have mine at 5 seconds.Quote from: patio on May 19, 2009, 07:35:46 AM

Absolutely, I do the same......5 seconds is good......I read the last line of the post and answered too objectively....as you say it's a tip EVERYONE can use. Thanks for the info. 5 seconds is good.If you really want to remove it:

How to delete the Recovery Console

=====================

1. Restart your computer, click Start, click My Computer, and then double-click the hard disk where you installed the Recovery Console.

2. On the Tools menu, click Folder Options, and then click the View tab.

3. Click Show hidden files and folders, click to clear the Hide protected operating system files check box, and then click OK.

4. At the root folder, delete the Cmdcons folder and the Cmldr file.
If you don't know your root folder search for these files and delete

5. At the root folder, right-click the Boot.ini file, and then click Properties.

6. Click to clear the Read-only check box, and then click OK.

Warning: Modifying the Boot.ini file incorrectly may prevent your computer from restarting. Make sure that you delete only the entry for the Recovery Console. Also, change the attribute for the Boot.ini file back to a read-only state after you finish this procedure. Open the Boot.ini file in Microsoft Windows Notepad, and remove the entry for the Recovery Console. It looks similar to this:

C:\cmdcons\bootsect.dat="Microsoft Windows Recovery Console" /cmdcons

7. Save the file and close it.

Does it work?

Removing Recovery Console is a horrible idea.

but the Windows start button and all desktop icons were accessable

What are you trying to do here?
The batch process is a msdos program which requires a password.
Program loops to itself if password is wrong, not allowing the boot process to continue to LAUNCH windows. System has to be turned off and on to start over.

works fine in win98 environment. What's wrong with the ordinary Windows login password?
NOTHING. I JUST WANT NO ACCESS TO WINDOWS AT ALL UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES UNLESS THE DOS PASSWORD IS GIVENI see you found the capslock button. Why not password the BIOS?

Solve : How can I get Windows XP??

Answer»

My desktop hasn't been working well lately so when I get a job and get enough money (will be sometime this summer) I am going to buy a laptop. The one I am buying, like most, comes with Windows Vista. I PERFER XP so I am wondering where I can get XP. Thanks.

-DylanSome computer shops still have installation CDs for XP.If you order ONLINE you can choose your operating system. And at many retail outlets...
My sister just got a brand new laptop with XP and a full upgrade to Vista,,,no extra charge...she just was sharp enough to ask. That is goodThanks for the replies, I'll check around.

Edit: How would I go about choosing to get it with XP? This is the laptop that I am planning to get; the product page says that it comes with Vista. If there is no way I will try to find an install disk.
Also, can an install disk be used more than once? I.E. if I want XP on the next computer I get (after this laptop) can I use the same disk again?

Thanksemail ASUS and see if they offer the option...
Some newer laptops you can't simply install XP to if the drivers are not available.

Dell Toshiba and Lenovo are the most common ones still offering XP as an option but ASUS may very well also...

You should get your computer and install disk from the same source. Some OEM XP install CDs may have drivers not found on the retail version of XP. And if you buy a retail version of XP it is, in a legal way, not licensed for use on more that one PC. Buy if you have the manufacturer's an OEM CD, and both PCs are from the same and both have the COA, then is such case one CD for both machine is inside the terms of OEM licensing.

There may be a cut off date whee Microsoft may not longer allow both XP and VISTA for the same machine. I don't understand the detail.

What I mean is that there is little difference between the Retail XP and the OEM CD, but there is a difference that may have some impact.

If enough people ask for it, Microsoft may extend the life of XP.
I am holding my breath ...and .. waiting.....Quote from: Geek-9pm on April 22, 2009, 07:48:57 PM

This is what I sorta see in that...
If you have the manufacturer's CD, and all the computers are from the same company, then you can install XP on the computers...Nope.
They would have to be identical so the drivers match.

OEM CD's should generally be used ONLY on the machine they shipped with...

Not sure what Geek was saying there though...maybe he can clarify.
Thank you for explaining then.No problem...By reading this post you acknowledge you have read the fine print at the bottom.
Sorry if I was not clear.
I did not mean to say thee is a free lunch.
The general policy from Microsoft is "One CD for One Machine".
Now then,
First consider the case of the large manufacture, say Big BLUE.
Big Blue buys a very large volume of product keys and a development kit from Microsoft. Or something like that. Details of the contract are not always public knowledge, nor do that have to be. Then Big Blue makes a limited number of CDs with the company name. They are for use only on PCs made by Big Blue. But they might install on other PCs. But we call these OEM CDs. They do not have all the drivers you need for just any PC out thee.

Later, Big Blue makes changes to the design. Some more drivers are needed. Now the company ships the PCs WITHOUT a CD. The old OEM CD does not have the new stuff on it, including MS updates. This complies, apparently, with Microsoft's contract with the company. The COA on the back of the machine is proof that the Windows XP factory install is legal. But the owner does not have a CD.

Thus we have a case where thousands (millions?) of Big Blue PCs are out there with no CD. In such a case, the user might order the CD from Big Blue. But they do not offer an updated CD for users. Maybe a few for repair centers.
If the user somehow gets a legal early EM CD, not a copy, it would not violate the intent of the law to use the resold* OEM CD to restore the XP system on the Big Blue PC that was sold with XP but did not have a CD shipped with it.

* If a PC is junked, the CD could be sold with s the junk. Legal within limits.

In no case would it be right to install XP on a Big Blue machine that was sold with Win 2000 only. Even if it did the install perfectly.

A similar case is when Small custom builder wants to put XP on custom built systems. But he has fewer options. He can not burn a custom CD with XP on it. Maybe he could make a driver CD. Or maybe he could create a recovery partition.
He is allowed to load a number of machines from one master media, or a deployment system used only in the shop. There has to be a COA and product key for each machine. Will the product key be useful for any other purpose. Maybe not.

If you want to custom build XP systems, you can order 30 keys and one media for about $4200. that is less than the price of the retail XP.
Can you buy a cheap OEM CD and ignore the product key requirement? Don't even think about it!
And don't ask how to fake the product key. NO!

So, for legal PCs built by somebody who STAYS in the rules it would be like this:
One PC, one product Key and COA.
- OR -
One PC, One CD, one product Key and COA.

(This post is not from a legal authority and reflects only the perception of one person.)

Thanks for the clarification. --dahlarbear

Solve : WIN XP Min RAM needed?

Answer»

BTW, I'm new to the forum, was wondering the net, dropped in, and notice the first test.
Many yrs ago during win xp start, I did run it with only 32Mb, tho 64Mb was better.
Others have TRY less and a search WOULD show this; link,
http://www.winhistory.de/more/386/xpmini_eng.htmSounds painful...L, not when ya come from the days of switches across diodes for ROM, more like funBeen down that road many times.....just have no desire to go back thanx.and some never did the walk, and missed out on a learning lesson.
PDP-8That being said i remember well squeezing THINGS onto a machine that was ill equipped to perform the tasks...
As a matter of fact i'm actually revisiting that ...i'm currently trying to force-feed Win7 64Bit onto an 800Mhz Athlon with 768 of RAM...so i guess it's the same.
I'm determined to get it to work so i have another small networked workstation.

would it not be easier to INVEST in an older SuperMicro PDSLA Pent 4 3GHz for dirt cheap, its a great work horse, newegg has themYep.
But i'm stubborn....
That's how i knew what you were talking about when you started this... well, I was never really a gamer, EVEN when I sold them on floppies way back when, but I do need the puter to run CAD and photoshop without question and some of the older MB's work well if one just changes a few silly setups, even running the net one only needs a silly 386 at most to read a fourm.
My oldest puter has never been turned off and thats about 19 yrs and going, and no problem.

Have you noticed any other issues or just this?I think this will help you:
Go to Start > Run and type in services.msc then press Enter.
In new window on the right side find Messenger and double click on it.
In page General if the service status is stopped, click on Start than APPLY, OK. Or, if that does not works to the Start up type chose Disable.

Solve : news videos start and stop?

Answer»

The Yahoo NEWS videos that I WATCH always start and stop as I watch. Why is this? I have xp pro and an older Compac Presario Connection speed...
RAM...
CPU...
hard DRIVE free space...

These are just a few of the factors involved. When they stop, does it show anything to indicate it's loading/buffering?

Does this happen with Youtube as well?

What is your RAM and Processor Speed, as well as your Hard Drive CAPACITY and Free Space?

Solve : Typing and backing up a seperate disc.?

Answer»

I would like to type a report on its own disc, seperate from all other computer files. I don't
know what disc to buy or how to install it. How do I back it up? How do I get to that disc when I am ready to work? I have WINDOWS XP. Can someone walk me through this?We need some more information. When you say disk do you mean hard drive? How big do you think this file will be? Can your machine handle another hard drive? Have you thought of using a flash drive or an external drive?

I'm afraid you are assuming I have much more knowledge than I do. I can't answer those questions. I have a Vaio laptop, Windows XP and a printer. I thought I could just buy a blank computer disk, slide it in and type a file on to that disc. Then just take it out until I am ready to work again. My report is 160 double spaced pages. I have no knowedge how to do this. Thank you.Helping you is going to be difficult if your computer knowledge so limited that you don't know what a USB/flash drive is, for example. Does your computer have USB? I would think it surely has USB if you're running Windows XP on it. USB could be used for either a flash drive or an external hard drive (HD).

Does your computer have a floppy drive? That would be another option but a very clumsy one, compared to flash drive or external HD.

I'm wondering why you want to work with your file on an external storage DEVICE. Why not keep your main/working file on your computer, i.e. on it's HD, and periodically make a BACKUP copy on an external device (flash drive or external HD)? I believe a floppy disk is what he's is referring to.

Sam- before you buy a Floppy disk, or any Floppy disks, for that matter- make sure that your laptop has a floppy drive. Most new laptops don't, unfortunately, which would preclude storing data on them, I suppose.

On the other hand, if your laptop has a CD or DVD burner you could use that.

But the question remains- Why do you want to store things on a separate disc?I originally had my report on my computer in different files, unintentionally. My computer went in to hibernation and I didn't know how to wake it up. I went to the computer store and they told me I had to reboot. I did and I haven't seen that information since. I can't have that happen again. I would be happy to keep the report on my computer but how do I then back it up? My computer can burn DVD's but I can't. Thanks!Quote from: Sam on November 20, 2008, 10:07:36 AM

My computer went in to hibernation and I didn't know how to wake it up. I went to the computer store and they told me I had to reboot. I did and I haven't seen that information since.

That doesn't make sense. I've used Hibernation many times; the purpose of Hibernation is to power off your computer without having to close the applications you had open and then being able to immediately resume where you left off when you start your computer, i.e. bring it out of Hibernation. So, Hibernation is designed to save your data, not lose it.

I mean no offense but, for someone who is working with a large and apparently very important file, shouldn't you learn more about how Windows and your laptop computer work? And, clearly, you need to know more about backup options and how they work. If you want to burn that file to DVD, you need to learn how to do that.

Is there a computer user's group (CUG) in your area? A CUG could be very beneficial for you. PUBLIC libraries are another source of books and videos on computers.

I think buying a flash drive would be a smart move; a small capacity one, say 512MB or 1GB, should be fine for just backing up that file and other data files. Even larger ones are quite inexpensive now; rebates are sometimes offered. Visit a Best Buy, Staples, etc. store, or buy online from a website such as buy.com. For example: Kingston 4GB DataTraveler USB 2.0 Flash Drive - DTI/4GB, for $16.23.

Yes, it has downloaded that page but somehow it keeps going
to that same page again and again.

I am going to redo your suggestions....may be I have neglected
somethings.

Thank you

ziloo Another reason could be that some anti-malware/spyware program (If You're using any) has locked Your start page to prevent malicious actions from the NET.

Solve : Windows does not come up on screen?

Answer»

I don't know the terminology but when I TURN on this particular computer (not the one I am using) all that comes up is the name of the computer MANUFACTURER. And in order to RUN a program, well atleast the only program that has been loaded you have to alt cont del and it takes you to task manager where you can start the program. Solve : Save as dialog box?

Answer»

When i go to "save as" in almost all programs i use it automatically goes to save it in "My Documents". There is also a list of locations on the left listing "My Computer", "My Networks" etc. Because of the work i do and where i decide to save it, i rarely use My Documents and the locations on the left are just the start of a very long path.

I've been attempting to find away for the dialog box to automatically take me to another folder and to also change the locations on the left. I can write macros for Office to save in my desired locations but OBVIOUSLY this is a less than desirable outcome doesn't bennifit me when USING other programs. Any ideas? Here is a solution using Microsoft PowerToys which is a FREE DLoad. Thanks Patio i appreciate it. It WORKS great. However it doesn't change every dialog box. For example it doesn't change for any of the office APPLICATIONS which i found a bit strangeI believe Office has it's own set of PowerToys...

Solve : OS Choices Menu?

Answer»

Preamble;
I have a dual HD system, Drive C has WinXP HE, Drive D was used as Slave for storage. I decided to try Linux so installed it to Drive D. I didn't like it but found I had no idea how to un-install it. My brainwave was to install WinXP onto Drive D thus formatting and cleaning the drive. Then I couldn't un-install windows, so I used McAfee shredder to erase it. I am left with 2 folders , Recycler and System Volume Info both show as empty files but they cannot be deleted.
My problem;
When I reboot I am presented with the "OS choices menu" which still shows 2 x WinXP HE. Is it possible to prevent this?
Phil. Can you boot with your xp disk then delete & recreate the D drive partition?
Then abort the xp install and format d drive. That allowed me to format the disc but I'm still STUCK with the "OS Choices Menu". The problem with that is if I'm not quick enough to select the real version, it trys to load the non existent version. I imagine it's something that requires editting the registry, but I don't KNOW enough about that to try without help.
PhilLoad the real version then press the L-H Windows key and the Pause/Break key to open System Properties. Click on Advanced and then the Settings button in StartUp and Recovery.

Now click on the Edit button top open the boot.ini file.

Carefully remove the line referring to partition (2)

If you are UNSURE, copy and paste your current boot.ini file here.

E.G. Edit....

[boot loader]
timeout=10
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows Home Edition" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect
C:\CMDCONS\BOOTSECT.DAT="Microsoft Windows Recovery Console" /cmdcons

To...

[boot loader]

default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows Home Edition" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect
C:\CMDCONS\BOOTSECT.DAT="Microsoft Windows Recovery Console" /cmdcons

Ignore the line...

C:\CMDCONS\BOOTSECT.DAT="Microsoft Windows Recovery Console" /cmdcons

...if you don't have the Recovery Console installed on the hard-drive.

Great, that cracked it. I had tried editing the boot ini but I didn't have "/noexecute=optin /fastdetect" included.
Thanks for the help Mac.
Phil.My PLEASURE Phil.

Btw, if you have a spare floppy and haven't done this already, copy the boot.ini , ntldr and ntdetect.com files to it as it can get you out of a jam if any of these files are damaged.

Need to unhide them first. When you test the bootfloppy you'll see that it will take you to the hard-drive.Thanks Mac I'll do that.
PhilThank a lot. You helped me with an almost instant wrong OS choice in the OS choices menu by editing the boot.ini

Solve : screen freezing really badly :(?

Answer»

hey guys, i need some help with something.

ok, i recently install second life, and all the drivers to go with it. (ATI video card drivers, etc)
but, then i relised it really slowed my computer down and so i uninstalled it
then after that, my computer started randomly freezing, so bad that i couldnt even move my mouse. It stayed like this forever untill i was forced to turn my computer off.
i now have to run my computer in Safe Mode.
i have tried restoring my computer to an earlier date, but didnt work and ive even tried uninstalling all the drivers that i installed.

some help please?
thankyou! xox

It seems the graphics drivers and the game are the issues, maybe one or both. You can roll BACK the graphics driver to SEE if that helps but 1ST I would download revouninstaller to remove remnants of the game to see if that is the issue.

just google revouninstaller to find it.

A RESTORE is a bit drastic. Try other OPTIONS before you resort to that in the future.

You may also want to post a hijackthis log so the registry can be checked for issues.

Solve : Deleting email in Outlook Express?

Answer»

My wife and I both use Outlook Express for email. I have no problem deleting emails, but when my wife tries to delete hers, they go to the "deleted" file and then they proceed right back into the inbox. She has about six hundred messages now in her inbox. I've tried to compare the settings on my email set-up with those on hers and can find no differences. Obviously, I might be missing something; any suggestions?
Thanks.Exactly what happens after she deletes messages? Will those messages in the Deleted Items folder stay there long enough to empty/delete all messages in the Deleted Items folder?

Does she have her Outlook Express set to leave messages on the server for a certain time after she downloads messages? I'm wondering whether what's really happening here is that she is getting duplicate/multiple downloads of the same messages, not that messages are mysteriously moving out of the Deleted Items folder back into the Inbox. If she deletes messages into the Deleted Items folder and leaves OE open, can you actually verify that messages move back into Inbox?

If the latter is, indeed, occuring, then I'd suspect a virus or malware problem.Hello Soybean,
Thanks for your response. Last week when my wife told me about this problem I tried deleting about twenty emails. The delete seemed to go smoothly, and clever me thought to go immediately to the deleted folder and delete them from that. This bug beat me to the draw: I watched the number of emails in the inbox just start shooting up again. I'm not sure they were the exact same emails I deleted, but it happened immediately after I deleted that bunch of emails. Now, as to virus or malware. About a month ago I inadvertently opened something that brought in an advertising virus, as the man at Symantec explained. He had to take over my computer and worked for about an hour and a half trying to get rid of that bugger. If he did that, am I missing something, i.e. did he get rid of the virus on my PART of the computer and not on hers?
That does not seem logical. When I log onto the computer I don't have any of these computer idiosyncracies that my wife is having. COME to think of it, her desktop is completely blue, the picture is gone and we've been unsuccessful in trying to get the desktop picture back (any picture at all). Maybe I should get in touch with Symantec again. What do you think? Again, thanks for getting back to me.Quote

You said Symantec helped you with your computer but not your wife's computer. Therefore, nothing was resolved on her computer during your session with Symantec. So, yes, I think you should contact Symantec again. Sorry for the lack of clarity. We're both on the same computer; she logs on under her NAME, and I under mine. But we're using the same computer. Curiouser and curiouser! It's probably still a Symantec problem, do you think?Try this. With OE closed, disconnect the computer from the Internet; in other words, physically disconnect the cord from your modem or router. Then, open OE to your wife's email account and delete messages from the Inbox into the Deleted Items folder. Then, select the Deleted Items folder and empty it. Do you see the same behavior in this situation? What happens? Thanks for your prompt reply. Your idea SOUNDED really good, so I followed your instructions, but when I opened her OE, lo and behold the inbox was already cleared of the six hundred or so messages that had been there the last time we LOOKED. I don't know what happened, but those emails that kept reappearing in her inbox were completely deleted. Nothing was in the "Deleted" file either. So I didn't have to continue with what you advised - i.e. delete while we were not connected to the internet, a suggestion that made a lot of sense. I've come to accept that there are idiosyncracies at play in the computer, but this one is striking (for me). Have you ever encountered anything like this before? Again, thank you for your help, it's greatly appreciated. To me it sounds like Norton Protected Recycle Bin doing whatever it wants to do on a whim as usual... Norton...

Solve : "On AC Power"??

Answer»

Hi, recently I noticed there was an extra system tray icon in windows that I never had before. When I hover my mouse over it, it says "On Ac Power". What does this MEAN? Should I be worried because this never appeared before on my PC.

I think it popped up when I tried my friend's new monitor, I ASSUMED it would go away once I go back to my old monitor but it's still there. I've also done some overclocking and cleaned my computer the inside before this happened but "On AC Power" sys tray icon only appeared after testing my friends monitor.

What is it? Should I be worried? and How do i get rid of it?

Attached a picture of the problem, Thanks!

EDIT: Also I'm RUNNING Windows XP SP3 and it's up to date, also this is a desktop not a laptop

[attachment deleted by admin]Look in the Power options under either control panel, or SCREENSAVER. There is a box which, when checked, shows the power options in the system tray. You can right click the taskbar->properties->customize->Click on the notification to hide.

Solve : Service Pack 3 for XP will not install?

Answer»

I DOWNLOAD SP3, run install, runs for long period of time. Then I get a message "Access is Denied". Click OK, it states "SP3 did not successfully update you computer." It then uninstalls.

Any ideas?

FranksterExactly when did it say 'Access is Denied'? Also, is that the FULL and only error message?

Where did you download SP3?

Is this a genuine (not cracked or pirated) version of Windows? The message "Access is Denied" is a popup window. That is all that it says. Then to get rid of the message, you click "OK". Behind the popup it says"SP3 did not successfully update your computer". Then it begins to uninstall and restart my computer.

I download the SP3 to my computer. Then DOUBLECLICK on it and it starts to install. It runs for a long period of time. It says it reads my configuration, then begins installing files. Then after a long period of time, the message "Access is Denied" pops up.

The SP3 is from Windows download @ Microsoft.com.

My version of Windows is LEGITIMATE (genuine).do you have admin rights?YES

Most of those are file recovery programs and I need disk recovery program. Also they are shareware and cost more than the flash drive itself.

No, doesn't work on ther computers either.
Try recuva
http://www.recuva.com/Thanks, but Recuva is also a file recovery program.
Windwos doesn't recognize the drive, just that something is there.
File recovery programs ask for file to recover and shows the directory tree etc. In my case there is no directory tree, it asks me to insert a disc into a drive.
This is interesting: I knew about the fakes on Ebay, but not how they did it or what happens when you start to fill it up...

Quote

Some unbranded or counterfeit flash drives are hacked to display the wrong drive size using the manufactures mass production tool and then sold as larger capacity drives. For example a flash drive with a 4GB NAND chip will report itself as 8GB drive. These drives often work until the user starts to fill the drive with data after which it becomes unreadable. These fake flash drives are usually sourced from china and sold on eBay.

http://www.aplusperfect.com/articles/how-flash-drives-fail

Frank, is your drive unbranded, and did you get it on Ebay?

Yes, it's unbranded and purchased on ebay.
Does that mean the drive is gone for good?
Don't care about the data, it's all backed up, just want to use the drive again.

Solve : Scansoft Paperport 11 ?????

Answer»

I am trying to delete some stuff I never use to free up more space in my oc.

What is Scansoft Paperport 11? I don't think I ever use it. It is 287.00MB I assume this alot since it is at the top of the list size-wise.

It was SOMETHING my ex-husband downloaded for sure since I an NOT technical.

Anyway....CAN I DELETE IT? Will it screw my PC all up?

Thanks!!Do you have a scanner? I believe this is scanner software. I have a scanner and the software is called Scansoft Paperport--but I don't remember what version it is. It should be safe to remove this software if you don't use a scanner or don't even have a scanner. If you do use your scanner, I wouldn't delete this software then. No, no scanner. I do have an all in one I just purchased...but I do not use the scanner anyway.

I could be wrong but I do not think a program that big would be related to my scanner.

Can anyone confirm what this Scansoft Paperport 11 is??? Quote

I do not think a program that big would be related to my scanner.

And why not?

Did you try typing "Scansoft Paperport" into Google before getting busy with the "rolls eyes" EMOTICON?

Here, I'll do it for you

http://www.google.co.uk/search?source=ig&hl=en&rlz=&=&q=scansoft+paperport&btnG=Google+Search&meta=&aq=f&oq=OMG!! I am sorry. I did not know that was Rolling Eyes. It looked like a sad & confused person like me with this PC stuff.

Please do not be offended. I did not mean in any way to be rude.

I looked it up before asking. It looked like some kind of program for saving files and stuff. Does it matter your like was from the UK?

DeniseDon't WORRY I didn't take any offence (or "offense" as you write it over there!) I agree the little man looks very confused.

Because I am located in Britain, my Google search page gets switched to google.co.uk, but it is really google.com that is doing the searching as you can see here.

I changed the .co.uk into .com

http://www.google.com/search?source=ig&hl=en&rlz=&=&q=scansoft+paperport&btnG=Google+Search&meta=&aq=f&oq=

Scansoft Paperport is a big office type software application for use with a scanner. It is useful if you have to scan lots of pages with printing on them. It has lots of features that are handy for organising that type of office task. You scan the pages and then you can ORGANISE filing them away, converting them into various formats, emailing and publishing them on the web. That kind of thing.

You can uninstall it using the "add/remove PROGRAMS" option in Control Panel.

THANKS SO MUCH!!

Might you also know if I need all of the JAVA's I see? Can I delete the smaller number ones. (Earlier versions, I presume)

???I pulled the working CreativeMX CDROM out of my PC and swapped it with a working Benq burnerCDROM.
I did the mechanical work first. Unplugged and replugged in to other machine.
Then fired up the machines and went on the NET doing stuff.
That stuff "did not" consist of getting DRIVERS for the CDROM's and I do not have the original driver disks for either of the ROM's.
So I did my email and then powered them down for the night.

Reason for swap - one machine has faster mobo speed

Next time I fire it up is when I get that there is a problem reading: mbr on C drive.
So I swapped the CDROM's "BACK" thinking that would fix the problem.
Nada
So, now I am stuck at DOS and can't load the driver(once I find a copy off the net-am hoping that works onto a 1.4MB floppy because A:/> is about all I got to work with.

Am I thinking rationally and correctly?

1. As there is no access to the mbr then there is no access to the cdrom driver that is in the C drive now, so I have to re-introduce the information to the pc so it will ACTIVATE the CDROM?
XPpro is on the computer and I do not have the original CD.
I have a Win98se boot disk and a Win98cd(I figure I could get the repair tools from the 98CD once I got the CDROM to run.

Or is there a hole in my thought process(I haven't had a coffee yet.)

It is an older 1050Mhz tower PC with a Quantum Fireball Plus AS harddrive20GB.

I have no cdrom. Only floppy A. so to get the cdrom to work I got to??Quote from: friedemann on April 25, 2009, 08:33:24 AM

What was the original problem this was supposed to fix? You'll need an XP CD to fix a corrupt MBR...
The version and SP's installed need to match the CD.

Solve : Computer messed after memory upgrade.?

Answer»

Hello,

I tried upgrading my RAM and something didn't turn out quite right. I have a Dell Dimension 8400 and 2 memory sticks in it. I have the specs for them on the online manual at dell's official website.
http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/dim8400/SM/specs.htm#wp1052308

I BOUGHT 2 1GB memory sticks and replaced my old 256MB ones as instructed by the online manual. After all is done, I boot up my computer and I get a black screen on my monitor. I checked out troubleshooting at kbytememory.com (the brand of the memory I bought) and it said the black screen comes from having the wrong type of memory. But it seems to me LIKE it's the right one.

Being kind of worried, I took out my 1GB RAMs and put back my 256MB ones, surprisingly, the screen went black again. Now I don't know what to do. The lights at the back of my desktop are all green.

Hopefully, those of you have upgraded RAM before can lend me a hand.
Greatly appreciated,
Wess.

if you were not grounded properly the static electricity could have fried your system!!! maybe one of the experts can help you more. What type of memory are the new ones ? ?
Did you make any changes in the BIOS ? ?hello
the (2)1GB memory is like giving a 2yrs old boy to carry a monitor.and it can cease the board .
what i know is that you can upgrade it but the memory is too much for the machine.
and i dont know the type of machine and its pentium. And it sometimes depends on the brand memory you put in the machine.and dont know other you made changes in the BIOS too. BUT try disssembling the macchine and assemble it again but if problem insist, change some of the devices with the same brand.
thanx.I did ground myself before the procedure, and the memory is 1GB DDR2 Non-ECC DIMM 533-MHz.

I don't know anything about BIOS, I read somewhere where I might have to restart my BIOS after installing a new upgrade but I don't really know where to go or how to to do it.

Thanks~If you dont see any image on the screen then I would suspect that the video card came unseated while you were inside the machine. Try taking it out and reseating it. While you are in there CHECK to make sure you have a tight connection on all of your cables.

Do you hear any beeps when the computer is booting up? Sometimes you have to use a small bit of force to get the RAM sticks to snap into the slots and lock into place. Are you sure that the memory is completely locked down? There should be two locking arms that snap up to let you know you have it in there right.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SiFIgSQOY7g

Have you tried a different monitor, just to rule that out as the culprit.

If your motherboard has onboard video and a video card, there will be two places on the back of your computer that the monitor will plug into. Are you sure you have the monitor plugged into the right port?

Wess before you suspect something horrible you should DLoad and consult your MBoard manual from Dell...Sadly, I do suspect something horrible, the manual does not appear to solve my problem.

In response to JJ, my monitor actually does start up. I see the Dell screen where it says F2 for System Setup and F12 for Boot Menu. I also see the Windows XP load but once I get to the login screen, that's when my monitor blacks out. I tried connecting the monitor to my laptop and it seems to work just fine.

I don't hear any beeps when I turn on my computer.

I also do believe it has onboard video because I have two cords that CONNECT my monitor to my desktop. One of them is blue and one white. Actually, I tried starting my computer up with only my blue cord plugged-in and i actually get to my login in screen. When I log in however, it freezes.OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO i think i found my problem.

"The computer boots but the screen is blank.
The most common reason for a blank screen is a dislodged card, memory not fully seated, or memory the computer doesn't support. Confirm that the memory is installed properly and that other components in the computer were not accidentally disconnected or dislodged while you installed memory.

Double-check that you have the right part number for the computer. If you have nonparity memory in a computer that requires error-checking memory, or SDRAM memory in a computer that supports only EDO, the screen may be blank at boot up."

I think i must've bumped something out of place because I definitely have the right RAM. Can anyone tell me how I am to know exactly what is out of place? Can I FIND the answer in my manual? If you can get an image on the screen then I would suspect it is a problem with your operating system.
When you start up press F2 to go into setup. Once there, just leave it alone for a while. Does the monitor stay on?
If it does then it is a problem with windows. Start the computer back up and tap F8 as it is booting. This will take you to the advanced startup menu. Choose Safe Mode and press enter. Can you get into windows now?
Oh cool, Windows starts up on safe mode. Thats a relief. But it still doesn't work when I don't go into safe mode.At the advanced startup screen, try the last known good configuration. If that doesn't work, go back into safe mode. Here you just want to try some simple things first. Do a disk cleanup, defrag and run checkdisk. The next thing I would try, if those dont work, is System Restore.

Solve : No sound on Acer Aspire 5000??

Answer»

No sound through speakers OR headphones. All my drivers are updated and working properly.
It just quit working randomly one day and i have no idea what caused it.

i've also tried reinstalling WINDOWS after it stopped working but that didn't fix it either.Did this happen when you updated the sound driver? or when?, any clues?Well i got a pretty intense virus, had to REINSTALL everything, but it stopped working before all of this happened. i guess i could have dropped it, since i noticed that the headphone jack was jammed in, but i really don't remember ever dropping it.
If the headphone jack is shorting out causing the laptop speakers not to WORK you may want to get the jack replaced before it causes damage to the sound device.

You get no sound at all when booting up ? or when windows STARTS? no beep(s)?Noppee no system sounds or ANYTHING
