Solve : Default, Dumb Question?????

Answer»

Hi This is a really DUMB QUESTION but does Default program mean the first choice or 2nd choice to use Default is what is set up as primary.

If for instance you have Irfanview set to associate with GIF and JPG images with a double click on an image file to open and view - then it is indeed the default program as an image app, unless CHANGED to something else.;DThank you For the QUICK Reply

Solve : Laptop Has Insomnia? (Comes Out Of Standby At Night)?

Answer»

So Monday night I did the normal routine of closing down my laptop (into standby) and going to bed. I woke up in the morning and it was running (still closed) and I thought "well, maybe I shut it too slow last night that it didn't shut down." When I opened it up, the screen was black and I ended up shutting it down. The next night, I shut it and made sure it went off. When I woke up Tuesday morning, the same thing happened. Upon reopening it, it was the same as before. I turned it off the other nights until last night. Sure enough, I woke up this morning and it was on. However, I can leave it in standby mode during the day and it's fine. It seems like only at night it wants to turn on. A case of laptop insomnia?

I haven't tried it in standby yet with it being open (as opposed to closed). I might try that tonight. I also haven't tried it without going into standby. My laptop will be three-years-old this Christmas and it seems that any electronic device is "old" after six months. I currently don't have enough money to buy a new laptop so I want to KEEP this one going until May or June when I'll get a new one for college.

But, until then, this laptop needs to keep on truckin'. I'm an avid writer and all my files are stored on it. I would die if my laptop died. =[ Even time it freezes, my heart skips a beat. Every time I start it up, I hold my breath. Back in September I was having issues (which randomly went away). There were a few times where it wouldn't start back up or couldn't find the drive. But it's been fine up until Monday. =[

I don't know what the problem is. I've always done this at night. I don't have anything running at night, either. I'm thinking about staying up tonight and seeing around what time it goes on. If it goes on at an abnormal time, then there's an issue. But if it goes on around a specific hour (like 3 or 4) then maybe it's something updating. But I have never had this issue before and the fact that it freezes up alone scares me.

I'm running Windows XP and Service Pack 2, I believe. My laptop is a Dell Inspiron 6000. I have KASPERSKY Anti-Virus and Webroot Spy Sweeper installed. I've ran them before with nothing popping up (besides those pesky cookies). I also have 2GB (which I upgraded last Christmas ). I'm just hoping there will be a this Christmas. And my next birthday (in May). Any thoughts on why this could be happening? All insight is appreciated.

~NatashaHi

You probably don't have to baby sit the computer at night.
Windows XP has an event viewer which should SHOW what times the computer switches off and on, and MANY other useful things (like who logged on and when.)

If you only close the computer into standby mode :-
it is ready to wake up when a passing vehicle shakes the house and vibrates the keyboard ;
it may well wake up if the internet / modem gets a signal;
perhaps a schedule service may being doing something
(e.g. a anti-virus signature update, or perhaps something a hacker did to you.)

I suggest that you shut down completely at night.

Also, why not get an external Hard drive and backup your files -
It will give you peace of mind when the computer next freezes,
and all your documents will be instantly available if the P.C. breaks,
and they will all be ready for immediate transfer to your new P.C. when you get it.

Regards
Alan.
Hey, thanks Alan. Well, I don't think it has anything to do with any of the things you listed (unless it's a Hacker ). I say that because never before has it done such a thing. At my house we have wireless internet and it's never woken up because of the signal. I was actually at my Grandma's house last night where she doesn't have wireless and it still did the same thing. I considered something being scheduled but I haven't done anything in the past week that could have scheduled something.

I'm always afraid to shut it down at night because it might not turn back on. So I prefer standby because it uses less power (which my Mom wants) and yet it keeps my programs open so that at a moment's notice I can get on, surf the web, chat to friends, and write my story in about a minute.

I actually am updating my video driver now; I thought this might be the issue. I'll check back to let you know if that works.

~NatashaTry going into BIOS and look for something called "wake on LAN" or WOL and turn that off. To get into BIOS there is usually a button that you have to press before windows starts loading, usually its delete or one of the F keys. Right when you turn the computer on it should say "Press X to enter setup" or something similar, that's the button. Make sure you don't change any other settings or bad things might happen.

Also, do you have any pets? My cat sometimes turns my computer on by nudging the mouse or stepping on the keyboard during the night.Hi

I have ESET anti-virus protection that automatically gets virus signature updates on the hour.

I believe it can also patch itself if ESET makes an improvement to the code itself.

I do not know what anti-virus protection you have, but perhaps yours can update its signatures and also its code, in which case your anti-virus might have decided last week to schedule a midnight wake up to get signature updates when its servers have spare time !!!

Solve : How to use all available hard drive space??

Answer»

Hello, my name is Chris and I'm having trouble with available hard drive space. I have an 80 GB hard drive but according to my computer the hard drive is only 16 GB, I have been told I fix this problem through Computer Management, but have been unable to fix the problem, How can I get the computer to recognize the entire 80 GB's, as this is very frustrating, and I'm about to lose it and TRY a STICK of dynamite. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you in advance. BTW I am using a genuine Windows Xp PROFESSIONAL OS.Exactly how much does it show now?

Also, are there any other partitions on the drive? (For example: C Drive, D Drive, ect...)The computer only shows 16GB, so I'm missing 62 GB of space, and there are no other partitions on the computer only the C drive. Good Morning,

hhmmm. Did you check your disk management? If so please email me a screen shoot. Thanksi think u should run disk defregmenter, one of the computer utility software,
and there are number of software available on the internet viz. pc booster, uniblue powersuit, which optimizes you hard disk space. Good Morning,

Run the disk defragment wont solve his problem. The problem this client is having is that he can't find the rest ofthe hard drive space. When you run the disk defragment is runs on the local partition. There's certainly some wild advice being thrown out here...

Chris, post the info from Disk Management and we'll go from there.
Most times Windows will not ALLOW re-sizing partitions or merging....
A third party program is usually needed.
But until we have more info let's not Fubar your system...According to my calculator, there is 64 GB missing, not 62 GB.

That is the only fact I am sure of.

It is my opinion that CHKDSK may be able to correct a subtle but very significant error on the disc system. I think this stands a better chance than downloading any optimizer or running a defrag.

It is also my opinion that ANY of these "corrective" measures might totally destroy any data which is at the moment trapped in these 64 GB.

It would be far better to await a screen shot as requested.

Regards
Alan

Solve : my friend has three computers and a printer hooked up to a server?

Answer»

All the computers CONNECT to the internet, and they can all print to the common printer. However they cant use the installed HP software to tell the all in one to scan documents. When I remove and reinstall the HP software, the computer say they cant see a network printer, yet they can still print to it.

All the computers are running Win XP professional.

Also when I print out a PAGE of network settings from the printer, I get a printout with the information, and when I put the printer Ip address in the computer search bar, I get a page that refers to that printer. So, according to the HP folk, this means the printer is on the network. So, why is it that the computers can print to the printer, but cannot use its scanning capabilitilies? How do I fix it? Also I noticed that the computers referred to a twain driver that was caused the computer to freeze. I WANT to remove that, will a removal and re install of the software fix this

I removed and reinstalled the software for the printer on all threee computers, but the computers can only print to that printer, the scan FUNCTION works sometimes only. Do you think maybe the network card in the printer is bad even though the computers can see the printer and print to it?

Solve : won't boot os disks??????

Answer»

Ok so i have an alienware area 51 m7700 laptop.

It boots through bios and everything, and i also just replaced the mothoboard.

It will boot linux disks to the menu
Ubuntu-Options of STARTING and installing windows, run mem text, check cd for errors.
Opensuse-is installed to HDD and boots fine and works fine.
Windows- is what i'm trying to install, and it gets as far as saying it is inspecting my computers configuration. then screen will just stay black and i believe it just looks at the cd every few minutes, but doesn't bring up any blue screen saying it is loading drivers.Sounds LIKE a different MBoard...Linux isn't as sensitive to hardware changes as Windows is...

Do you have a Windows CD that MATCHES your version and Service Pack #'s installed ? ?
Your OEM Restore CD will not work for this...

Repair Install of XP

You will also NEED the updated MBoard and chipset drivers for that new board.Surely, when you replace the mobo on a laptop, it's going to be more or less identical to the old one? Or can you change motherboards for different makes/models on LAPTOPS like you can with desktop cases?
I would think so as well...i was just going by the symptoms themselves...
But i've seen manuf. change chipsets for example 2 or 3 times inside of one Model# run of production...Sorry i guess i should be more specific.
The motherboard was replaced because the old one was bad.

It can boot to the os on HDD which is opensuse.

but when i put in windows xp cd it will say checking system configuration. then halt on just a black screen nothing comes up showing it is loading drivers the cd drive has a steady green light but that's it.Check Windows CD for 1. genuineness, 2. scratches/damage.

Is HDD a SATA? If so you will need to load drivers via floppy for XP install. The hard drive is Sata i believe.
I can't get genuine cds to load or even linux cds to fully load.
The os that is already on HDD seems to keep freezing after a few minutes.

The board i recieved doesn't hold the graphics card heatsink tight against GPU. So i returning board either way to get a new one. A friend told me my graphics card could be fried too. could this be what would cause it to hang when trying to load cds further or even the opensuse on the HDD?

Yes it could. A fried graphics card could (would probably) halt the system.

You mean .GIF, not "gifts". Any reason you can't use .jpg? These photos are .jpg...I want to resize them to order photo GIFTS...I THINK you need to provide a lot more detail here. What photo editing program(s) do you have/use? What SIZE and format (jpg, gif, etc.) are you source photos that you'd like to use for these gifts? What are the pixel recommendations for the gifts? Solve : I connected two PC's by ethernet cable -- How do I access the other's HD??

Answer»

Ok -- I have a desktop PC whose monitor card is fritzing out, but that isn't what I'm trying to FIX. I have CONNECTED the PC I am using right now and the breaking one by ethernet cable. I want to recover some important files which I, Foolishly, did not back-up. I do not want to REMOVE the HD from this one because it is an OLDER model and I do not know much about the "Hard Drive" section of my PC...

Since the monitor card isn't working at all, I cannot simply plug a USB stick into my PC and copy em...

So to skip to the point "If you have two computers connected by ethernet cable, how do you have them access the others hard drive?"

Lesson Learned = Always back up important data. Lol.

Thanks in advance,

Solve : Which processes can I end to make my computer run faster??

Answer»

Which processes can I end to make my computer run faster?
I am showing a lot of processes running on my computer.
Where I used to work, we were told to end certain processes that were from previous log-in attempts.
Please let me know if there are ways to know which ones I shouldn't end and which ones I should.
I do not want to mess up anything that is important. Thank you for any help.
6 days ago - 7 hours left for voting
Additional Details
I messed it up. I deleted some of my processes that were under my name. Now that task bar and icons are gone. I only have my wallpaper showing.

I shut the computer down to restart it, hoping that it would reset normally, but I can't get it to come back on. (I am at a local LIBRARY now.)

I was given my computer by a relative who only used it for games and didn't have the internet.
Whenever you turned it on, it would SAY, "Operating System cannot be found". You could turn it off and back on again, then it would come on. Recently, I had it professionally "cleaned out" down to my Windows XP after I got high speed internet, to try to get it to run faster. After I got it HOME, it had this problem. I tried to get it to boot up all evening and the next morning before it finally "found" it and came on. I have left it turned on ever since then. Since I had to turn it off today, I have been trying and trying, but it hasn't worked yet. Is there something else I need fixed, tooHow old is this computer? Can you tell us the basic hardware specifications of it? What make and model is it?

How many processes are actually running after startup, now that you've "had it professionally 'cleaned out' down to my Windows XP"?

I suspect you may have some hardware issues, POSSIBLY hard drive or the internal power supply unit in the computer.1. If you expect to use a computer for any length of time, you need the resources and ability to restore or re-install the operating system. A Windows operating system is a very large complex collection of software. Over time, it will TAKE some "hits". Rather than "paying" someone to track down and fix these glitches, I think you will find it more cost effective to purchase the recovery/restore CDs or an appropriate Windows installation CD/DVD for the operating system of your choice. Learn how to backup your data, re-install the operating system, re-install your applications, and reload your data. (Or at least have the CD/DVDs available to permit someone else to guide you through the process.)

What restore/recovery or operating system installation media do you have available?

2. I fear you made a poor choice if you "paid" someone to professionally "clean out" your system down to the operating system. They should be able to re-install the operating system to a known working state (with or without the data). Paying them to "fix" or "clean out" an existing installation of the operating system is problematic.

How do they or you know when they've successfully completed the job?

3. It sounds like "Operating System cannot be found" is the issue you should have addressed.

Solve : Not a valid win32 application?

Answer» HI everybody.I have came upon a slight problem.I have just recently fixed my brothers computer, and he now has a small problem. He plays a game called Freestyle Street Basketball. He told me he clicked on the game, and it started updating.Well, the update froze,so he went into the TASK manager and went under processes and ended the process on the update.(Update was running under admin.) Is there anything i can do besides reinstalling it? He told me it takes forever, and he would like to avoid that process.

Btw. The program and its files have no viruses.Downloaded from a trusted source, and just checked with webroot. It would be WORTH the wait to re-install it...then re-boot and grab the update.
He can't play it now anyways so the lengyh of time it takes to re-install shouldn't matter anyways.

Solve : Toshiba Laptop "Freezes" After 10 Minutes?

Answer»

Thanks to all of you for the suggestions.

Patio - Keep your head down and left arm straight...I'll see if SeaTools will do any DIAGNOSTICS on the Toshiba drive while connected as a USB drive to my desktop.

I ordered a "new" (used) board today. Should be here early next WEEK - I'll post back.

Veltas - The laptop is disassembled so I can't get into the BIOS but I'm pretty sure there were no fan options. BTW, are you sure that your netbook has no fan. Even my old Linux based ASUS 701 eeePC has a fan.

As an aside - Crystal Disk Info did not work under my Win 7 install
- didn't see the Toshiba as a USB drive or any of the desktop drives; booted into XP and it saw all of the drives just fine. Same with SIW - no SMART data. Same desktop hardware, dual boot...FWIW.

I'll post back the results with the "new" MB.Quote from: quidnunc on March 11, 2010, 09:56:38 PM

Alas, definately no fan. I have cooling methods including:
Blowing repeatedly at it.
Running cold water in a network of pipes past it.
The fridge.
Getting holidays in iceland and browsing outside.

It's good to hear that you're getting the new board, I'm 60% sure that it will just fix it, since there sure as *censored* isn't anything wrong with the actual fan. Some BIOSs have fan settings which 9 times /10 will mess your fan up if you change them. It could have been that the BIOS was changed for whatever reason (a new piece of software, power efficiency tools etc.) which it really shouldn't have been which is why I asked for any info on that. If you want to rule out the BIOS in the future, a safebet is to remove the Lithium Battery, put it back in, and tell the BIOS to go back to default settings. P.S. Make sure your laptop isn't your main source of the time before doing this because this process resets the time.

Good luck with the new board! Quote from: quidnunc on March 09, 2010, 05:51:39 PM
...Intel 1.6ghz dual core processor.

Speedfan showed CPU temp as high as 60, both cores, before the system froze and Speedfan quit working.
So what is the max temperature spec for that CPU? Is it "61.4" degrees Centigrade? (Took value from this non-authoritative source: Maximum CPU Temperature.Dahlarbear - Good question...I think that there is a Core Duo T2050 in the laptop which would make the max temp 100. But, remember, Speedfan quit working so I don't really know how hot it got - hopefully, not 212 deg F!!!!

My guess (hope!) is that there is something on the MB SHUTTING down the fan - bad sensor, crack, etc. I'll know when I replace the board.Veltas - Interesting about your netbook cooling routines. Almost as interesting as your BIOS access routine. Any reason that I wouldn't just re-boot and HIT F1 (or whatever it is on this laptop) to "Enter Setup?" Is there a reason to pull the battery?Patio - SeaTools for Windows did not see any drives while running under XP. I have 3 WD's and the Toshiba was plugged in as a USB.

Seatools didn't see any drives then errored out - I forget the exact message.

BIOS is an interesting thing, you can clear types of data that might be causing problems by removing then replacing the battery, and then going for factory defaults on the BIOS interface. The battery holds CMOS stuff which could have been corrupted for all manner of reasons, and how a BIOS resets is different from BIOS to BIOS, so a safe bet for making sure any type is completely reset is my method.Veltas - Now I understand that you are talking about the CMOS battery - h*ll, I thought that you were talking about the laptop battery!!Quote from: quidnunc on March 13, 2010, 02:30:11 PM
Veltas - Now I understand that you are talking about the CMOS battery - h*ll, I thought that you were talking about the laptop battery!!

Sorry, I guess it's slightly old-fashioned calling the CMOS battery just a battery, despite most people refering to the actual lap-top batteries when they say 'battery'.OK - New MB works like a champ!

One remaining issue - I always shut down through Window's shut down routine. But, sometimes when I power the laptop back on, the fan will start, the power light comes on but no BIOS screen and the display remains blank. So, then, if I do a hard shutdown, remove the power cord (or pull it from the wall) for a couple seconds and power on, everything is normal - BIOS POST screen and boot into Windows.

The laptop is running on the power cord with the battery removed. Any ideas?Does anyone have any thoughts as to why the laptop will not start unless the power cord is first disconnected and then re-connected?I've seen this when the laptop battery is getting ready to die.Quote from: patio on March 24, 2010, 08:57:29 AM

Solve : install new XP OS in Compaq 5321SR?

Was told by repair store that computer has serious virus and it would be best for a complete reinstall. Do not have original CDs of the OPERATING system BUT it is a valid and authenicated OS by Microsoft. If I install a NEW XP OS, are there any other problems? Does the Compaq BIOS have any issue when a none OEM(as originaly sold) OS? I have installed hard drives before and have re-installed original OEM OS but never with a new OS. Any comments are greatly appreciated.Forget about the BIOS...
Re-install XP and you should be good to go...
Remember on a clean install all drivers need to be re-installed,,,...or use Compaq recovery disks, or recovery partition, if you don't want to deal with drivers.thanks for the fast replies, just for my peace of mine, I am going to purchase new XP OS and will be completly wiping the diskclean before this new install. I understand I will have to load new drivers for my PRINTERS, scanners, etc. Is this what you mean about new drivers?
I am a little leary of this but when I did the similar thing with a notebook and BRAND new hard drive and using the existing CDs from the notebook manufacturer there was no problems.
Again APPRECIATE these comments, does make my plan a little more comfortable.Quote

Is this what you mean about new drivers?
Yes. Some of them will be installed during Windows installation. For the rest of them, go to Compaq site, or/and device manufacturer (printer, scanner, etc.) site.
Do NOT install any non-Microsoft drivers through Windows updates.Install the motherboard "chipset" driver first (I assume from Compaq - Broni?). Reboot, then install the other drivers.Quote

Solve : HP restore with partitioned drive and 2nd (Slave HDD)?

Answer»

I searched the posts for a while but don't find my particular prob. Forgive me if I failed to find it if it's there.

I have a HP Pavillion with XP SP2. A while back I added my old HDD as a slave and BACKUP my files to it. Both are partitioned HDD, but the slave was formatted to use the space. Many crashes lately and tons of garbage progs and stuff so I figured I'd do a recovery to start over. All filed backed up to the slave HDD.

My question is whether the recovery will touch the backup HDD or should I REMOVE it for the recovery and then REINSTALL it afterwards. I deselected it in the restore preferences panel but don't want to lose my files.

Thanks for any responses and for help in the past. Once again I forgot my login so had to register anew, but I use the FORUM somewhat regularly and have always been grateful for the help. (I admit I usually only come by when I need something, like a bad relative.)

The recovery will effect only your system partition / drive. If you have a second drive it will not be effected.good news. Thank you. Ive done the recovery in the past but forget the steps when I select the recovery console I get 3 choices as to login. I selected "3.Windows" but didn't recall what to do at the command prompt.

This time I pushed F10 longer and got a pretty Compaq PC Recovery Console so I'm running that now. (I was wrong about it being an HP, that was the last one, this one's a Presario SR1500NX. Aren't they the same Mfr?)

This seems the be a better option, no? Is there any reason that you would rather do a recovery from the command prompt than use the Recovery for Dummies console?

Thanks again for the time & sharing of expertise.

Solve : Laptop does not recognize restore disk?

Answer»

Toshiba Satellite A45-S150 (originally loaded w/ Windows XP)

Was running Windows XP SP3.

ACPI BIOS 1.5

A few months after purchase this restore disk loaded wo a problem. But now, laptop does not recognize the Restore disk as a SYSTEM disk. With Toshiba support ran through w/ no success - purchased new recovery disk resulting in the same problem. Toshiba offers no further support on this laptop.

Loaded Puppy linux live CD. CD Drive works, and laptop runs fine. I even tried a HP Restore Disk, the system recognized the disk, but, of course it was incompatible.

Lastly, I did run across a few discussions about the CDFS (ISO 9660) standards. It seems at some point in the past the standards were changed to UDFS, and the layering is different. One commenter thought the problem might be that updates to the BIOS MAY have affected his machine in this way and was looking at FLASHING the BIOS. I've practically given upon this, but thought I'd ask if anyone may know the cause or have a solution? Here are the Toshiba upgrades, if you're interested.

Stab in the dark, prayer in the wind and a lot hope and luck. See if u can run it off a Virtual Box (VB). Try to download Sun VB, into any MAC, Linux or Windows box. Just to be sure to download the correct version. Sometimes the VB will be able to pick up some of this CD's. One other idea another got nothing to loose idea. Try install Puppy with Grub, then try a dual BOOT. Grub does a better job of managing bootdisk and the MBR. At this stage there is nothing to loose. Write back and let us known.

Solve : can't defrag?

Answer»

I have a gateway COMPUTER, USING windows xp--when I try to defrag I get a pop-up box that says"Disk defragmenter has detected that Chkdsk is scheduled to run on the VOLUMN" (C) Please run Chkdsk/f. I have tried to type this Chkdsk info into "Run" it tells me it cannot be found. I have tried to search my computer and it cannot be found. I restarted my computer numerous times to no avail. I have even done system restore with no luck. Does anyone know how to fix this problem? How big is your HD? And how much free space is left?

Windows needs 15% free to defrag.Your hard drive has errors which need to be repaired before defraging, else it will spread.

See if run check disk is in there > start \ all programs \ accessories\ system tools \ scheduled tasks

Else click Start button, then Run, now type chkdsk /f
(note the space then /f)

If should come up with a black box and says "Would you like the volumn to be checked next TIME you start the computer" type Y click enter. Now reboot.

Your saying it can't be found, make sure it's typed correctly else boot up using the Windows DISC and go recovery console (R) and type it there. You might need to run a repair on your WinXP.

Once the disk check is completed it should let you run defrag.

The Default Action is the bolded action. It is also the action executed when you double-click. Most Items have "Open" as the default action.

When no 3rd party graphic softwares are installed and associated with image files, Preview is the default action (top of the context menu and bolded), and Windows Picture and Fax Viewer is the corresponding program to open it. Now that I have associate jpegs etc with Photoshop, the default action is Open (top of the context menu and bolded) and Photoshop is the corresponding program to open it. The Preview option has now been pushed down, but when chosen, still opening the image with Windows Picture and Fax Viewer. This is exactly the same SITUATION until I experienced the PROBLEM that started this thread.

Solve : Dell replacement disk?

Answer»

Does Dell replace lost installation disks?

My father has a legit product key for Win XP Media Center Edition, but doesn't have the disk...

Can you get used Windows XP Media Center Edition disks from ANYWHERE?

well nevermind, I had him call Dell with the SERVICE tag # and there sending him another DISC for 10 dollars.

Lots of people on the Internet say Dell doesn't send new discs. I wonder where there (they're ) coming from..Dell is one of the better manuf. when it comes to this as is Acer as well....
Media Center CD's are extremely rare....even from the manuf.

Good to hear he is solved. I'm going to format his HDD and REINSTALL for him in a couple weeks. I went to sift through his computer yesterday to see what I could do to speed it up. Since he got the computer in 2005 he has not reinstalled and there's just too much crap to sift through at this point, aside from the fact that he's had many viruses that I've removed.

Is there a way to copy the recovery partition on a dell system to an external disc, in case the hard drive fails and your unable to obtain a replacement disc?

Solve : PC locked after internet settings changed??

Answer»

Hello,

We have a CHINESE student living with us, and he brought his laptop.
Our wireless wasn't showing up on it etc, and nothing could be found.
I tried to repair the wireless connection on the laptop, and I think I also tried right click, properties -> internet protocol -> install.
At this point there were a couple of settings that he said would be ok to click; but then the thing restarted.
It now ASKS for user name and password; where it didn't before. He SAYS he's never NEEDED one and so doesn't know what it could be.

It is all in Chinese too, so very hard to mirror my English computer over to Chinese.
Any idea why changing a NETWORK setting could lock it up like that?

Thanks

Solve : help: start menu/ desktop icon don't work.?

Answer»

Hi all,
I have an Asus z9100l, has been lately reinstalled window WP sp3. well this laptop is very low in memory and old so its kinda slow n different problem comes out every now and then. somtimes it works just fine but sometimes it turns stupid. Normally if I can't fix a problem, I'll reinstall or REPAIR Windows

Like this time, a new problem that I've never experienced b4: when i click on start menu icon or any desktop icon, nothing will happen. so i can't use anything, the only thing i can do is ctrl+alt+del to get the task manager. Can RUN 'new task' but won't run 'browse'. It will freeze 4ever.

Sometimes i restart and use debugging mode and it works, but sometimes when it doesnt work, i hav 2 use safe mode. sometimes after at least 5 restart, it works again, but somtimes not.

Can anyone PLZZ tell me wat was wrong and any solution. thanks LOTS!!!These things do not happen spontaneously. What led up to it (new hw, sw, VIRUS, error, etc)?I used line #195 from this page
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm
then I run explorer.exe from the task bar manager and all good now.

Thanks Allan anyway!

Solve : Establishing previous O/S?

Answer»

Hey

Can anyone help me in discovering which previous OS was used on a machine.

I believe the registry will have the answer, but locating it is proving difficult.

Many thanks!!

WhitebearNot if it's been formatted or had a clean install of the exxisting OS...No it can't be done.

Why do you ask ? ?Even for an upgrade install it would take a lot of work and file/folder analysis.

The registry is of no assistance.ProduKey. You may be able to use Nirsoft's ProduKey if you can run it on a Windows computer that has access to the hard drive in question.

Along with displaying the "Product ID" and "Product Key", it will also display the Windows operating system version and service pack level, if any.

Read the documentation on the web site. Download, unzip, and execute "ProduKey.exe".

From the program's MAIN window, select "File" -> "Select Source". This should give you access to hard drives and/or Windows registry other than the one you're currently running from. I think it might work for you...

This assumes the hard drive in question contains a readable Windows file system.dahlarbear- they want information on the "previous" OS, not the current one that is installed. 1. I KNOW. There's a chance they can pull the information off the disk in question from a working computer system, assuming the previous file system is still intact.

I've only PLAYED with it a little bit, but there's a "Select Source" option within ProduKey program window.

2. Do you think they've overwritten the previous operating system with a new one? Quote from: dahlarbear on March 26, 2010, 07:28:26 PM

2. Do you think they've overwritten the previous operating system with a new one?

Well, that's what I thought. After all, it's a tad difficult to access the registry without an OS installed. There you go again with "logic". Which brain hemisphere is that again - I forget... Left...

Solve : Constantly told to compact Outlook email, but it always aborts half way through?

Answer»

I'm getting the message to compact email to save DISK space, and yet everytime I do it, it aborts the process about half way through. Why do I keep getting this and why can't it finish the job? I'm using XP home and I believe it's OE6.Try stripping out any LARGE attachments you no longer need such as music and/or VIDEOS...Music and videos that are in Outlook? Does it MATTER if they are in the inbox? Or if they're saved in folders? She has saved alot of emails, I thought someone had said, th enumber ofemails saved, shouldn't affect performance. But I suppose there is a thing as too much?Is it Outlook or Outlook Express? There is a major difference in how each SAVES emails. It is Outlook Express 6Outlook Express stores emails and attachments locally (on her hard disk), both in folders and her in-box, so unless she is tight on hard disk space, I wouldn't worry about compacting emails.

If she is tight on hard disk space, then like Patio said she needs to start deleting large attachments. Typically videos take up more space than anything else. The majority of emails don't take up much space.

Solve : Frozen Beeps!?

Answer»

I have a Dell laptop that is RUNNING xp. If I turn it on and leave it, it is fine. If I try to run a program of any kind (scan, game, typing, browser), after about 5 minutes it locks up and gives off a constant beep - this beep is a repetitive short beep of the last sound before it locked up - so the tone/sound of the beep changes. I have to power off to get it going again. The computer is virus and malware CLEAN. I've checked the memory. Any suggestions? Thanks. From Our ARCHIVES...

This may give a clue to what the issue is...
Post back if you need more info...Thanks for the reply. No, it's not beep codes. It's like the computer snatches the last sound before freezing and just repeats that sound. I've been reading a bit about video cards possibly causing this problem but have not reached a conclusion yet....Well you mentioned beeps...which normally means sounds from the motherboard...now you are saying these are Windows sounds? ? ?

Just trying to CLARIFY as they are 2 DIFFERENT things...I don't believe it is motherboard beeps. I believe it is the repetition of the last sound before it locks up. Therefore, if it locks up when I click then I get the repetition of the sound of a click. Thanks for any help!

Solve : Dell Laptop Screen Goes Black after BIOS runs?

Answer»

I have a Dell Inspiron 8600 with 60 GB hard drive and 2 GB ram with Pentium m. Running Windows XP professional. I was not currently using any anti-virus software so it might have gotten a virus.

When I turn it on the BIOS runs and then it just goes to a black screen with the a dim backlight. I can ENTER the setup mode or boot menu but when I enter boot menu it GIVES me a list of DEVICES to boot including the hard drive which if selected results in the same blank screen. I can also select a diagnostics tool which i ran all test with no errors at all.

I removed all external devices and the CD drive with no change. I then removed the hard drive and instead of a blank screen I got a message stating no bootable devices installed.

Is my hard drive shot? If so why did it pass the diagnostic test?

Any help would be great.Quote from: courtneygorley on March 26, 2010, 09:32:13 PM

Solve : I need a simple incremental backup system?

Answer»

gotcha Recommended reading.

I'll give a full report on the Paragon-incremental-copy/enclosed-internal-HDD backup plan as soon as I have it going.I tried Paragon and just couldn't get it working. It has all the right checkboxes and appears to offer what I'm after, but I had no LUCK. Sometimes it wiped out the whole clone when I wanted it to update it. Sometimes it just did a whole clone instead of an incremental one. I could never CREATE a bootable clone.

Acronis created a bootable clone and I used it to migrate to a larger disk.

XXClone offers incremental cloning and actually does it properly. I haven't booted successfully from it in an external enclosure and haven't tried installing it in my laptop. So for now I'll settle for a possibly-bootable but effectively incremental cloning system.Try Macrium Reflect...same price as Paragon.I got Paragon doing incremental backups; it works perfectly for me.

Backup Facilities
· Support of all present day techniques to store backup images:

- Backup The term backup originates from the time when the best way to protect valuable information was to store it in form of archives on external media. It's become now a general notion to mean making duplications of data for protection purposes. to local mounted/unmounted (without drive letter assigned) partitions;

- Backup to an external mounted STORAGE to provide for a higher level of data protection and system independence;

- Backup to a special secured place on the hard disk called the Backup Capsule that has an independent system layout (e.g. a separate partition) and will stay operable should the active file system be damaged. To avoid an accidental removing or unauthorized access of the backup data, this partition is hidden and thus cannot be mounted in the operating system;

- Backup to external media (CD/DVD) to guarantee a high level of data protection as long as the backup media is kept secure;

- Backup to a NETWORK drive to stand a better chance of success in case of a hard disk failure;

· Sector backup to save not only all on-disk information but also the system service structures. It is IDEAL for making a backup image of an entire hard disk or system partitions to guarantee the operating system’s working capability.

It is a very stupid thing in my computer.
Please help

Edited for Content.Sounds like a little worm, maybe someone just PLAYING or at worst a Sasser variant...

As soon as it starts up, press the "START" BUTTON, and then select "Run".

Type "shutdown -a" (without the quotes). That's the "shutdown" command, with the "-a" OPTION, which stands for "abort the pending shutdown".

Press "OK" on the count down timer which will now just stop the shutdown from occuring.

Check your Startup Programs and Task Scheduler, to see if it's just a joke virus, which can easily be removed. Else you will need to work out what type of virus.

Solve : Windows XP bug?

Answer»
Yeaaaap!

I believe Windows XP has a little bug (if not many!). Please confirm to me if this is not a bug:

Sometimes when you try to browse from your Open/SaveFileDialog on your LOCAL machine to a location on your remote machine on your LAN, your LAN's present computers tend to randomly appear/disappear by choice. If they are not there, then that is not NICE because you would like to save your file on that network location but it's not available right now. You could save it to your local machine and then cut and paste it to your remote machine but that's not how I want it done.

Anyway this is apparently due to a bug in the Windows Master Browser (COMPUTER Browser service) that forgets to clear its own cache and shows random? behavior. What I do is I have a nice little start menu function I wrote:
@ECHO OFF
net stop browser
net start browser
(it's a .bat shortcut)

So if anyone knows how to fix this bug other than this way, that would be nice.

Treval

Might be a bug, might be one of their great 'features'!

Here's some fun ones...

1.
Nobody can create a FOLDER anywhere on the computer which can be named as “CON”.

"CON" is a reserved name that dates back to the days of MS-DOS and is short for "CONsole". Other possibly reserved filenames include things like COM1, COM2, and so on for your serial or modem ports, and LPT1, LPT2 and so on for printer ports.

2.
1.) Open an empty notepad file
2.) Type “Bush hid the facts” (without the quotes)
3.) Save it as whatever you want.
4.) Close it, and re-open it. Yay Microsoft is Anti-GEORGE Bush, not a conspiracy, well that makes up for some of their evil!?!!

3.
Open Microsoft Word and type
=rand (200, 99)
And then press ENTER.

For even more fun, try the =lorem() function; same idea, different text.Sigh... Of course, I could be wrong...

Treval: Suggest you report potential "bugs" to Microsoft.

Are you sure your network has the "optimal" configuration to support this? Microsoft's "computer browsing" functionality is more complicated than most of us realize. See these Microsoft links:
o Computer Browsing for SOHO Networks with Microsoft Windows
o Troubleshooting Computer Browsing on SOHO Networks with Microsoft WindowsThat's some funny stuff. =PAzzaboi: OK, I tried number two, the "Bush" exercise. Strange... Is that what's known as an "Easter Egg"?It's kinda the same as a 'Easter Egg', but 'Easter Eggs' are actually created for fun, this was not done on purpose.

'Bush hid the facts' is the common name for a bug present in the function IsTextUnicode, which causes a file of text to encode.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bush_hid_the_facts

It's not the characters itself but the structure of the sentence, number of characters and spaces (4 3 3 5). For example:
'this app can break'
'this cat can split'
'xxxx xxx xxx xxxxx'
'abcd efg hij klmno'

Why someone made it 'Bush hid the facts' as the popular one was however anti George Bush.

Since it's nearly the Easter holidays and you're at least in the spirit, for some actual software and movies 'Easter Egg' fun you can go to: http://www.eeggs.com/Quote from: Azzaboi on March 27, 2010, 05:48:21 PM

Nobody can create a FOLDER anywhere on the computer which can be named as “CON”.

This isn't a bug. It works this way intentionally.

http://blogs.msdn.com/oldnewthing/archive/2003/10/22/55388.aspx

Additionally, it's not a bug in "IsTextUnicode":

http://blogs.msdn.com/michkap/archive/2005/01/30/363308.aspx

It's more an unintended side effect. There is no way to determine the difference between text like "this app can break" or "bush hid the facts" and a few others, since their unicode representation has a dual meaning. As explained in the blog posting, if you have East Asian Language support installed, you don't see the box character; you see a series of asian characters.

Also, it would appear that they fixed this in Vista/7.... I think they changed notepad, not the function, though. I think notepad now simply uses the BOM mark at the start of the file to determine wether it's unicode.

I can't seem to get the third one to work in Word 97, 2000, or 2003.... I guess I'm doing it wrong.

What do you mean when you try to use the external drive it uses the internal drive? WHAT uses the internal drive? You need to explain your problem more clearly.

When I put a BLANK dvd in the external and click BURN, it opens up my internal cd drive on my tower and tells me to put a disc in. I want my comp to RECOGNIZE my external drive as the burner not the one in the tower. And you click burn WHERE? Come one, be clear and explicit. What burning app are you using ? ?
All you need to do is point it to the external drive via My Computer.

If using Windows built in burning this may be more complicated...Total MEDIA extreme, the program came with the external drive. Basically I just want to use my external as my cd/dvd drive. Solve : Uninstalling .NET Framework 2.0?

Answer»

This topic was covered LAST year by someone and I am NONE the wiser . I have aUSB Flash Drive with information re my profession. I have FOLLOWED the installation instructions however it will not install due to "another .Net Framework 2.0 installation". And when I try to uninstall the installed Framework it will not do it and refers me to a microsoft link: fwlink/?Linkld=91126. This site INFERS that I shouldn't uninstall it and proceeds to give a very long way of doing it. Is it dangerous to try and uninstall this and retry the Flash Drive? Don't know what I should do.

Solve : running dual operating system windows xp and windows 7?

Answer»

how i can link between these two windows that i have installed on my hard drive under two different partinions so that i can choose to what operating system i wana boot.
thanks in advanceHere is the quick answeer.
Not recommended.

Now the long answer.
1. Start with a clean Hard drive, or else erase the hard drive.
2. Using the Windows XP install CD, make two partitions.
3. Do a full install of the XP on the first partition.
4. Install Windows 7 on the second partition.

This should not be hard. But for a unknown reason some people just have a hard time. So Microsoft made a VIDEO:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/help/upgrading-from-windows-xp-to-windows-7
If the video leaves your confused, please come back and say something.
Dual booting multiple windows operating systems has ALWAYS been as simple as installing the older OS first. This has not changed with the introduction of windows 7 and neither have the basic semantics.Quote from: Geek-9pm on March 28, 2010, 11:29:21 PM

Why not?Not recommended because there is another way that avoids common issues.

The other way is to just get another drive and install the NEW OS on the new drive. When you are done, put both drives into the system and select the system you want from the BIOS boot menu.

Later, if you have a problem with the XP system, remove the other drive and do a recovery or repair in the normal way. Otherwise when XP rewrites the loader or boot information. That will cause a problem with the new OS if the new OS is on the same drive.

One 'expert' said in is Blog that it is alright to trash the Windows 7 boot loader with Windows XP. His idea was that it is so easy to fix Windows 7 with the repair disk. Is this not like telling people you don't need a spare TIRE, just call road service when you have a flat?.

But the OP wants both on the same drive.
Yes, an XP repair install will trash a Vista or Windows 7 boot sector.

But a Vista/Windows 7 repair will restore it.

Solve : recommend appropriate OCR program??

Answer»

Can anybody recommend an OCR (Optical Character Recognition) program that can do what I need it to do?

Here's the situation: Over a period of time, I figured out the chords to about 280 songs. Yeah, I know you can get the chord progressions to songs online, but they tend to be very inaccurate. I worked on each song until I was positive it was exactly right. (It made sense since I was GETTING paid to do it.) And I wrote down each song, by hand, one song per sheet of paper.

Now I want a permanent, neat record of all of these chord progressions, so I can print them out as requested.

So I scanned the song sheets I had written, with the idea of then translating them to text via an OCR program, and then formatting them in Word.

The problem is the OCR programs I tried. First I tried FreeOCR. It can’t handle handwriting at all - only typewriting. So then I tried SimpleOCR. This involved a lengthy exercise, the intent of which was for SimpleOCR to “learn” my handwriting. Towards this end, I wrote down by hand a newspaper article of about 500 words, and then scanned it and submitted it to SimpleOCR for analysis. This involved proofreading by me of SimpleOCR’s analysis.

But SimpleOCR’s performance was barely better than FreeOCR’s. Here is the problem, as I understand it:

Older OCR systems yielded limited accuracy because they simply compared scanned images of characters to stored bitmap images of known characters rendered in various specific fonts. More modern OCR systems achieve better accuracy because they can recognize characters BASED on the context of the word in which they appear (as with the Predictive Optical Word Recognition algorithm).

But in this case, this more modern approach is actually working against me. Apparently SimpleOCR thinks that anything that is submitted to it consists of sentences, and it’s trying to decipher each word based on having seen a sample, in the subject’s handwriting, of that word before.

But what I’m trying to translate into text isn’t a bunch of sentences composed of words. It’s chord progressions. Stuff like:

G6 Asus2 Asus2/#C E Bm7+11
Am9 Bm7 CM7 D Dsus4 D

SimpleOCR is completely failing to read this kind of thing correctly. It’s just spitting out gibberish.

Does anybody know what OCR program CAN handle this? Or failing that, can anyone recommend a more appropriate forum for this question?
Reason will do this...however it's not cheap...Reason? Do you mean ReadIris? I can't find any "Reason" OCR online.Did you read: CR software that recognizes handwritting

Some more information please.
What are your budget limits?
How much material do you have?
Does it have to be a computer only solution?
How long would it take a Human to type it out?
Can it be read by someone who knows English as a second language?
Can you provide some sample images?
Are there copyright issues?

Characttell?s SoftWriting can be downloaded free for a trial.

It is under $70 and only requires a standard TWAIN scanner (many inexpensive scanners are TWAIN COMPLIANT.)

If you have XP (even on a desktop) click on Start, Settings, Control Panel, Regional and Language, Languages, Details, and, under installed services, click ADD to see if handwriting recognition is installed already.
I've got Windows XP Pro, but handwriting recognition wasn't there.
Quote
If not, and you have Office XP installed, go to Add or Remove Programs, click on Office XP, then Change, then Add or remove features, then Next, then Office Shared Features, Alternative User
Input, Handwriting.
I've got Office XP, and I've followed these directions and installed Handwriting. Now how do I use this on a scanned sheet?
Quote
As for the connected, cursive handwriting, the chances of being able to convert that are slim.
No problem, none of this is in cursive.

Moving on to your questions:
Quote
What are your budget limits?
The cheaper, the better.
Quote
How much material do you have?
About 280 sheets.
Quote
Does it have to be a computer only solution?
I want as little labor as possible.
Quote
How long would it take a Human to type it out?
Maybe a full day. But because the chord progressions aren't composed of words, it would take much longer than you think to proofread to perfection.
Quote
Can it be read by someone who knows English as a second language?
It's chord progressions, like I showed (except where notes are added), so it's not a language at all.
Quote
Can you provide some sample images?
Let’s see if this works; I’ve never done this before. And just for the record, I transcribed whatever I was paid to; I didn’t choose the songs.

I can’t see the image in the preview; what did I do wrong? In between the img and /img demarcators I inserted the location on disk of the .jpg file. But maybe it’ll show when I actually post it (although I doubt it).
Quote
Are there copyright issues?
No - otherwise they would have long ago gone after all the people who post chord progressions on the net. Anyway, it's for my own use, not for publication.
Update:

Softi Software's FreeOCR:
ABBYY FineReader 10 Pro:

They don't even try to process hand printed stuff.

Simple Software's SimpleOCR:
I.R.I.S. ReadIris Pro 11.0:

Too bad they tried - they accomplished nothing but wasting my time. I came up with a rather funny euphemism for their performance but unfortunately it's inappropriate for a public venue.
I haven't used OCR software for several years and wasn't too happy with it then.

I can't remember which program I used, but I do remember it had a custom dictionary for words not in it's standard dictionary, just like in a word processor.

Maybe you need to look for something with that capability and you could put your chords in it.Quote from: BobLewiston on March 28, 2010, 12:28:16 AM

The image has to be uploaded to a server.

for example:

Code: [Select]
shows this:

You can use something like photobucket or another image hosting site, too.The software that came with my Brother printer (actually, an All-in-One) will scan a document to text. In other words, it performs OCR. I haven't used the software to do this so I can't COMMENT on how well it works. Just thought I'd mention this in case you might have some OCR functionality already on your system that you weren't aware of.

Since my computer was worked on about a week ago, I have not been able to view any pictures on the e-mail, even the old e-mail that was there before. It only shows small boxes with x's in them. Please help. The program is Outlook Express. Under Tools - Options - Security - I do not have the blocked images box marked. What program is this? e.g. Windows Mail, Outlook, etc.what happened if you tried to right click on the X and select show PICTURE or something?

at the IE, tools - internet OPTION - advanced - then restore advanced setting. This is Outlook.
If I right click the red x, it only gives me the option to "select all." Under Tools - Options - do you want me to go to Security - Advanced? Under Advanced, how should I set it? Solve : Windows XP gets the stop error BSOD?

Answer»

Lately today I turned on my XP PC and I went into my PROFILE user. Then I was on the computer for 5-10 minutes and then suddenly it got into the BSOD mode. I diden`t play any game or anything I just tried to open the internett. That worked TOTALLY fine.

The BSOD erro NAME was

STOP 0X00008086(0X00000000,0X00000000,0X00000000,0X00000000) There was no other information about this on the blue screen. But there was some information when I turned the PC on again and the normal restore message came up like everytime when the PC crashes, but exept that the computer worked all fine afterwards.

I use a Windows XP Home Edition Version 2002 Service Pack 3 Dimension 84001) What did you do in user profile?
2) Is this the first TIME you got the error?
3) You said there was some information when you turned on the PC - WHAT information?
4) Is everything WORKING okay now?

Solve : Booting...?

Answer»

Helo guys, av just formatted my hard drive that had vista as the operating system so that i can install Windows XP,but then after formatting it,i tried to install XP unfortunately it didnt install giving the error message saying"BOOTMGR is missing",my CPU is meccer,512 ram and 80 GB of drive....so help mi guys to solve this problem....You have to BOOT to the XP disc to install it. BOOTMGR is the Windows Vista/7 Boot manager, which means you are trying to boot to the hard drive.1. Just curious:
a. Did you delete the "Vista" partition and then recreate a new one?
b. Did you just "format" the previous Vista partition?
c. Did you QUICK format or full format?QUOTE from: dahlarbear on March 03, 2010, 06:42:48 AM

1. Just curious:
a. Did you delete the "Vista" partition and then recreate a new one?
b. Did you just "format" the previous Vista partition?
c. Did you quick format or full format?
Okay, now I'm curious . What DIFFERENCE does it make whether he did a full or quick format? Not sure... To get the correct "bootloader" reference in the partition (or volume) boot record, the partition should be "formated" using the operating system you wish to boot (or its install CD).

I'm not clear on what the "rules" are. I would expect a "full" format to ensure the correct boot record exists for that operating system. I'm not sure if it will always rewrite it or only if a suitable one isn't present.

My guess is a "quick" format would not rewrite the boot record.

To avoid during the research, I would delete the existing partition, create a new one, and do a full format. The only difference between a full format and a "quick" format is that a full format first checks for and repairs hd ERRORS prior to the format. Other than that, a format is a format And just to chime in if he's getting a bootloader error the drive was not formatted properly...And moreover, as BC said above if he's actually booting to the CD he shouldn't get the bootloader error anyway.

Solve : anti-virus?

Answer» HELLO , nice to meet you! that's my question, l had a big problem in my computer, a lot of errors, 2890, so l install a program to clean them. Before that my last anti-virus, AVAST collapse, was missing one file ..exe. Now l clean all the errors but the problem still the same, l choose the AVG Anti-Virus 75, download the program and suddendly appears the error avgamsvr.exe creating file don't exist or the directory. My computer now has no security, and l can´t download the anti-virus because they don't find that file. What can l do? If you can help me please do it! THANK YOU PAULA Umm what program was telling you your computer had all those errors?
What program did you install to clean them?
What VERSION of Windows are you using?
What do you say happen when you download AVG? Do you get an error when installing it or afterwards? You obviously have some malware and /or other bugs at large in your system.

Here is a link to AD-Ware 2007 for you to download and run. May help clean out your system so you can re-install other needed programs.

These are the key questions...The Moderators here are very rude. Anyone one who either knows a lot or think they do on this site is rude as they can be, THINKING this must be rocket sience and it's far less complicated ... I'm not speaking for those here, altho there are nicer ways to write even this. To many other decent people who help becsause they want to for anyone to have to put up with this bull....
