Solve : Hitbox problems - shooter games?

Answer»

In like any FPS game (Battlefield 3, SWAT 4, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, Ghost Recon Online, Battlefield Bad Company 2 and more), when I hit someone, I can only see the squirting blood, but the server doesn´t register me hitting anyone. I have tried a lots of tweaks that I ´ve found on the internet (especially in game SWAT4, where you can modify its .ini files in a large size), but nothing helps - the tweaks were not meant to eliminate hitbox problem, but to increase overall performance and internet connection. Of course I don´t have the problem all the time, but the gaming is really unplayable like this, as you die only because of this stupid bug, when you shot someone´s head 9 times (1 shot is needed in SWAT4 to kill with weapons I use) and then he turns on you and kills you on 1 burst not even aimed to your head. Compare for yourself:

Killing with a problem: http://www.xfire.com/videos/200b07
Killing without a problem: http://www.xfire.com/video/604eb4

A short video more detailing the problem: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wObherA32YQ&feature=youtu.be

Internet connection:

Computer rig: MS Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit SP1 (original), Intel Core i5-3470 3.20 Ghz, 8 GB RAM DDR3 single channel, Nvidia GeForce GTX 650 Ti, motherboard MSI B75A-G43 (MS-7758)
Note: Changing between old and new gaming rig didn´t help.

I am not using any adware, spyware or anti-viruses (only the already installed Intel antivirus). On the old PC, I was having Avast.

I am looking for SWAT4 hitbox fix, as other games don´t really make me fun. If you are interested about "nodie" in BF3, I will explain you too and send screenshots,  because it´s little bit different there.

I WOULD BE ESPECIALLY GRATEFUL FOR ANY HELP.

Best regards,
OehtabThis is basically a problem with your connection to the game server.  Running speed tests was a great first start, those tests show nothing out of the ordinary.  I would RECOMMEND having a read of this - it's basically a ping test that runs constantly, so you can see how your ping does over time.  Get that set up, and run for a few days, monitor the results on there and post the link to the monitor if you like so we can take a look.  That'll show you whether your connection gets worse at certain times (usually peak times) or if there's something else funky going on. Hi Calum,

thank you very much for your respond, I truly appreciate it. I will start testing immediately and share the results with you as soon as possible.
Finally a competent answer, not like on 4 other sites where I have posted this. Thank you once again. That's what we do let us know how you get on and we'll see what we can do.Here is my test. The problem is still there, even though it looks good overall.

My Broadband Ping

I have been playing, from time to time I was rapidly SCROLLING on Facebook, searching videos on YouTube and so on, just as I always do, so I guess the two high pings are caused by that - because after they occured, I went to sleep.Your minimum latency is rather high for gaming, it's a solid 45-50.  That is the root cause of your problem.  For comparison, mine is 17.That might be caused by connection to a router that provides internet to about 6 devices.
Any possible way to decrease minimum latency?

By the way, weird thing is, that there are people with much HIGHER ingame ping that don´t have this problem.  Unless they do the same test, to get a nice constant ping going to monitor the connection over a period of time, you can't compare your constant ping times to their "instant" ping.  Additionally, games can MEASURE ping in a different way - some measure falsely low or falsely high compared to your actual ping.
That latency is the latency to your modem only - so it discounts any further latency from the modem to your PC, passing through a router, switch, cables or wifi on the way.  Therefore, there's very little you personally can do to reduce that, save calling your ISP and seeing if they can do anything to help.  Are you on cable or DSL?I have cable connection. In that CASE the only thing you can really do is call your ISP and see if there's anything they can do.Alright. I am not sure if I will call them, because I doubt they will help + there were many problems providing us internet connection in the past.

Anyway, I have thought, if something like this http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/957944-battlefield-bad-company-2/54397003 couldn´t be added into SWAT4.ini, perhaps it could help too? Also, can´t the high minimum latency be caused by distance between me and the server?Anyone still here? )) Quote from: Oehtab on July 23, 2013, 05:06:04 AM

Indeed it could.  Are you referring to the distance between you and the game server, or you and the pingbox server that Thinkbroadband use?

That's mainly because of the way that Bad Company 2 handles hitbox detection, some games do it completely on the client side, some completely on the server side.  You can't change anything that's done server side, I don't know how SWAT 4 handles it.

One other consideration, are you on wifi or a wired connection?I am sorry for being unpatient, that´s my nature (unfortunately).

I am reffering to the pingbox server that Thinbkbroadband uses, because UK servers mostly have higher ping for me.

I am not sure how does SWAT4 work, but I guess it´s completely server-sided.
And I use wire connection.

Well there is Cross Fire which is a fast paced First Person Shooter just like Counter Strike and it is 100 percent free.  All you have to do is go to fileplanet.com and download the client which I think was only 500mb download.  The game itself is fun because you can customize your character as you earn money after each game.  Try this:

Solve : Super nintendo wont save levels??

Answer»

Hi and thanks for taking a look at my thread.
I dont know if this comes under computer games but here goes OK.

My super nintendo or SNES wont save the games. I have all the RIGHT bits and it used to save the levels, (lets say DOOM for example.) Just recently it did save the levels... then, all of a sudden, now it doesnt AND the levels that were saved, are gone???
This would have to be a gamers nightmare  in the early days, but I've played these things so many times I can just about remember the codes for the levels of by heart. ( not quite.. I have them written down hehehehe.)

Yes, it is a misspent youth and I am trying to reclaim my younger days by playing these games, but I also found out that these consoles are "WORTH A FORTUNE" today.

I have changed controllers but that didnt improve it at all. They all have a slide in container that has the memory chip in it. It is also where the rumble pack inserts.

Is it the controller/memory chip in the console unit at fault do you think?
I mean after all it is, what, 35 years old, so something is sure to wear out sooner or later.

Thanks for looking at least. ImnoGuru.  Hi...

the SNES doesn't save games- that is, the console doesn't.

What allows you to save SNES games is battery-backed RAM.

It's kept 'alive' in much the same way as a Computer's CMOS RAM, in fact it uses the very same battery type. The battery is inside the cartridge and unsurprisingly can get old and be unable to keep the SRAM data, which can cause it to get corrupted or simply DRIBBLE away.

Reading the rest of your post, you aren't talking about a SNES (Super Nintendo) but rather a Nintendo 64 console. (third generation console) Thankfully, the above is the same case for those as well. Perhaps more so.

1. Some N64 games have Battery-backed memory on the cartridge. This includes games such as Super Mario 64.
2. Other games use Controller Packs for game saving/loading. This includes the game you mention, Doom.
3. Controller packs use Battery-Backed memory as well.

Depending on the type of controller pack, you should be able to TAKE it apart and replace the battery. Each one I've seen has used a standard CR2032 battery, just as you would use for a Computer's CMOS battery. Once you replace that the controller pack should work again for saving and loading. It's actually better that the controller pack fail in this way rather than a cartridge, since the controller packs often used a more typical Battery holder, whereas the cartridges often had the batteries soldered in place.

Ok, a battery that lasts 35 years wow!!
Dont you just wish they could produce one like that for electric cars?

BC_Programmer, you might be able to tell me then, what is the unit in the front top of the console? It is under a removable panel on the 64 console.
Oh and how is it removed. Do I need a special tool to remove it safely?

Just so I understand correctly then, the game cartridge has the battery in it, not the controller/handpiece or the insertable 256K memory unit?
and to change the battery, I need to disassemble the game cartridge.Firstly, BC is right. the SNES does not save games, the cartridges do. You'll have to change the battery in the cart. See this - http://motherboard.vice.com/blog/pictures-how-to-replace-an-snes-cartridge-save-game-battery

Secondly, the removable panel on the top of the N64 has a 'expansion pack' which takes the machines RAM to, i think, 4MB. If the pack is black/grey, it is what comes with the machine. The expansion pack is red. It does come with a tool to remove it, but i've done it before with the handle end of a thin flat spoon.

Some N64 games (like Super Mario 64) are saved in the cartridge, but others (like Micro machines or Shadowman) need to be saved on a memory card that you insert into the controller. I think i still have three memory cards :-) Quote from: ImnoGuru on July 27, 2013, 09:39:52 AM

Ok, a battery that lasts 35 years wow!!
1978? What? You have a Nintendo 64. Those were released ~1996, making the console at most 17 years old. The SNES is around 22 years old, and the NES is around 27 years of age. The only console that is 35 years old is the Atari 2600, which you do not have. (Or maybe you do, but it's certainly not the Nintendo console you are referring to)

It's the Memory. It comes with 4MB of RAMBUS memory. The default has 4MB- it is called the "Jumper pack". It is rather featureless. The memory can be expanded to improve graphics or for some games was needed to work, and expands the console's memory to 8MB. It has a bit of red plastic along the top. There is no reason to remove it unless you are replacing it with another one.

Doom is one of the N64 games that uses the Memory pack.Firstly to BC_Programmer. yes you are right...Not 35 years at all.
See what alcohol and late nights do to my mathematics. My kids were all into the games so they would have been about 10 through to 16 or so..
Sorry everyone for that gaff.
I would have been about 35 at the time they came out, is where my confusion came from.
You also did explain it very well. I was just reiterating my understanding of what you said.
BC_Programmer this unit is definitely a Nintendo 64 that my Doom failed to save.

I also have several others around ranging from Snes, Playstations and WII.

To reddevilggg, great link thanks.  I just had a closer look at the cartridge and decided to open an old one first so if I didn't do it correctly it wouldn't really matter. ( I chose Tetrisphere.)

My units looks like they have the original expansion packs then, and I recently found a supplier of the memory cards, rather inexpensive, on Ebay. I'd be happy to pickup a couple of them for their price.Just to be clear re: the Expansion PAK, it is only needed for certain games; it plugs into the console. You either have the jumper pack (included, sounds like you do) or you have the Expansion pack (which doubles the memory). I'm confused because you said "expansion packs" plural :/ Which makes me think you might be referring to the Controller Pack (the memory cards that go into the controllers). the Expansion pak is required for a half dozen games (Donkey Kong 64 and Perfect Dark being two specifics I can RECALL). Doom 64 doesn't use the extra memory for anything, just fwiw.

This Wikipedia article on N64 accessories might clear it up.

For saving games it's either on the game, or uses a Memory Card on the controller.

The game in question, Doom, uses the Memory Card.

If the games are not saving or being persistent, than it's likely the battery on the memory card is dying. You could of course just get another memory card(s) (make sure it's a Controller pack memory card for an N64 and not the expansion pack, though!), but you can also just replace the battery; it's a standard CR2032.

In that regard we can see the link reddevilggg posted; his posting goes under the original notes about the game being an SNES game, as well as using on-cartridge SRAM. I've found that controller packs typically require no extra work; you take it apart and the battery has it's own holder that you can slip a new battery into, and the game should store your saved files again. N64 games (the ones that have battery-backed SRAM on the cartridge, anyway) are often more tricky to deal with because the cartridges are smaller.

(Sidebar on the linked topic: The recommendations for replacing a battery I've seen attempt to be more "future-proof" in that they typically recommend replacing that entire portion with a CR2032 battery holder; so the battery can be easily replaced, which seems reasonable).

Solve : .Flow (Yume Nikki fangame) -- Adding registry values??

Instead of RUNNING the setup for AppLocale, I accidentally added it as a REGISTRY value. Will this mess with my COMPUTER? When I clicked on the download, it had opened up in WinRAR instead of showing me the set-up wizard, and at the time I had no idea what I was doing, so I clicked on the value thingy and added it.

I had been warned that it may tamper with the other registry values. So, I was thinking that I would restore my comp to an EARLIER date. Should I?
I'm completely confused about the whole situation.

Solve : World of Warcraft - Video Card Messages?

Answer»

So occasionally, usually after a patch or UPDATE World of Warcraft will pop up a message before launch of the game that complains about the Video Card suggesting that the GPU is not powerful enough even though its plenty powerful to run the game on normal settings.

Both of us are getting in excess of 30 frames per second with graphics set to Normal ( middle setting ) where there is a slider bar under the system settings in the game to set it to Poor, Fair, Normal, High, Ultra. I told my wife to ignore it since once she is in the game she can clearly see that the game runs perfectly well on the hardware she has.

Her statement to me was "OH NO!!!, I am going to need a new computer?" And I was like...what?... Why? and she said WoW came up showing that the system doesnt meet the requirements. I was like "OH... That Message, just ignore it." Your system runs the game fine right? And she said yes. I said your system has NOTHING wrong with it speed wise right? And she said she is happy with her computer. I said so, just ignore it and play the game and use the system. The system is plenty powerful enough to run the games you run on it and netflix and everything else. There is no need to buy a new computer and waste money. So she agreed and went on to GAMING happy with the performance of her system which is a hand-me-down from my gaming needs so she always gets free upgrades of my hand me down hardware etc, and then the cycle doesnt end there, its then handed down after my wife to our daughter for her computer needs at which point the hardware is aged well and eventually gets pulled from service in our home.

Her system specs are:

Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4Ghz E6600
2 GB DDR2 667Mhz RAM
160GB IDE ATA 100 HDD ( 20GB free )
40GB OCZ SATA II SSD ( WoW & system swap file is on this SSD to boost system performance since the IDE drive is slow )
Windows 7 32-bit Home Premium
XFX nVidia GeForce 9500 GT Video Card with 1GB DDR2 memory

My system specs on system getting this message is:

AMD Athlon X2 4450B 2.3Ghz
4GB DDR2 800Mhz Corsair XMS2 RAM ( *Using 3GB due to 32-bit OS )
500GB SATA HDD ( 80GB free )
60GB Corsair SATA II SSD ( WoW is on this SSD to have quick load times in game )
Windows 7 32-bit Home Premium
ASUS ATI Radeon HD5450 video card with 512MB DDR2 memory

* This is probably nothing big, since after all the game runs fine on both of these systems. They probably detect that the cards cant run on Ultra settings well and thats why they are suggesting an upgrade.

However it also in the back of my mind makes me feel like Blizzard may be trying to get people to buy new hardware because they may have it in with nVidia or AMD to gain something behind the scenes by having their software suggest that the hardware doesnt meet their system requirements as a planned obsolescence blat since the high end at its time 9500GT has been around since July 2008 and the bargain performance video card the AMD Radeon HD5450 has been around since January 2010, and what better way to get people to throw away perfectly fine video cards for new ( or completely new computers as my wife had though she needed), than to suggest it in a game when its not necessary! Quote from: DaveLembke on September 04, 2013, 02:12:47 PM

This is called a "conspiracy theory"...

From what I can tell the message displays if the OS you are using is not using the latest SP. You mention Windows 7, if they are RTM rather than SP1 it could cause the message.

Hi BC ... Both are SP1 and reboot on update Tuesdays via automatic updates.

*Also both systems have latest drivers for these cards too. This is a complete guess as I've never played WoW and I'm not that familiar with it, but perhaps it caches some INFORMATION which is then wiped when the game is updated or patched?  Then when the game loads, it doesn't know what card you have or its capabilities, so it displays that message on first run.
This is based on a game I used to play, Battlefield 2142, which if you updated your video card drivers or cleared a CACHE folder (which I had to do often because it didn't really like my video card or possibly the shoddy ATI drivers) it would then take about 10 minutes to load into the next map you played while it rebuilt the texture cache again.  Not exactly the same situation, and as I said, a total guess while not being familiar with the software.Calum.... This actually sounds like it is what it could be, just as you described info wiped out as a result of a change to the game client. I didnt think of that. Since this only seems to pop up after a game client update.

* I have also copied the wow folder from my gaming system to a laptop via a 32GB flash drive and the laptop with Intel Integrated Graphics and 128MB shared video memory ( had to set it to poor to run it, but it ran ok at 15 fps ) and it has had a pop up message before where it had to relearn/reconfigure for the new hardware. The message was something like "Hardware Change Detected, Settings have been set back to Default."

Solve : PC to leapfrog standalone game consoles?

Answer»
By MATT SLAGLE, AP Technology WriterFri Apr 20, 2:09 PM ET

From the movie-like graphics in the action game "Gears of War" to the nearly photorealistic racer "MotorStorm," video games have come a long way since the bouncing blocks of "PONG."

A new breed of visually striking games promises to light up computer screens with even sharper, more lifelike graphics than ever before. But unlike the popular "Gears of War" or "MotorStorm," the games won't be debuting on Sony Corp (NYSE:SNE - news).'s PlayStation 3 or Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox 360 consoles.

Instead, the PC is returning to the pinnacle of video game graphics — thanks to some under-the-hood tweaks in Microsoft's Vista operating SYSTEM.

The technology behind these improved visuals, called DirectX 10, is the result of a collaboration among video game developers, graphics card makers and Microsoft. For years, they have been working to streamline and standardize the software used by Windows-based PCs to display graphics.

The latest improvements, many believe, far surpass even the very best of what the consoles are capable of. Case in point: the upcoming PC shooter "Crysis," where players take the role of a battle-savvy soldier who has to uncover the secrets behind an asteroid that has smashed into Earth.

Beams of light glimmer through a jungle overgrown with swaying palm trees, and the thick underbrush gets more detailed with a closer look. Gaze into the distance and you can see aquamarine waves crashing on a white sand beach. Zoom in on a soldier to see an emotive face with stubble, freckles and other subtle individual details.

DX10 requires a specialized graphics card and there are only a few games today that take advantage of its capabilities.

Though relatively few consumers have yet to upgrade to Vista, dozens of game makers who have been using DX10 believe the benefits of the technology will quickly lure hardcore gamers willing to spend money on the best systems, whatever the cost.

Game players who frequent the Warezabouts LAN Center in Forney, Texas, often ask owner JJ Tarno about Vista and DX10, but most seem to be waiting for more compatible games to come out before they make the switch from Windows XP.

Tarno, 31, said he's looking forward to games like "Crysis" and has been impressed with the video clips he's already seen.

"If you want to play next-gen games you have to have a next-gen operating system," he said. "A game like 'Crysis' comes out and you just say, `How much is that game?' About $1,500 with new video card, RAM and processor."

Many game developers are excited at the technology's prospects.

"Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures," due in October, will put players into a persistent online fantasy world of barbarians and mythical monsters.

"What we tried to achieve with the graphics is something that we called 'magical realism,'" said Jorgen Tharaldsen, product director for Funcom, which is developing the game in Oslo, Norway. "With DX10 we can just add a lot more bells and whistles. We can start pushing graphics to the stage where it almost looks realistic."

Bill Roper, whose Flagship Studios is developing the action adventure game "Hellgate: London," said he wasn't concerned that not everyone has Vista or a DX10-capable graphics card yet.

"As with every new technology, the hardcore lead the way and the masses catch up," he said. "Not everyone that has an iPod or a DVD player went out and bought theirs on day one. As with previous operating system and hardware advances, the more products that support it and can show the tangible benefits of upgrading, the more widespread the adoption."

The DirectX standard dates back to the mid-1990s when upgrading add-on video cards on HOME computers was still a hobbyist's pursuit, something hardcore gamers did to extract the most performance from 3-D shooters like "Quake" or "Unreal."

Subsequent versions have added new FEATURES to speed up graphics and give game programmers more tools to simulate the movement and appearance of liquids and other complex objects.

As the demands from game makers (and players) have grown increasingly complex, so too have the capabilities of DirectX. The software lets programmers tell the 3-D computer chips in graphics cards whether to simulate a wisp of smoke or a mirror's reflection.

DX10 not only makes games look better, it also promises to improve performance by simplifying how the graphics cards process video information and display it on the screen.

"It means the realism will take a dramatic jump," says Roy Taylor, vice president of content for Nvidia Corp., which makes 3-D video chips for computers. "It's going to look dramatically more real."

Those effects have taken on a cinematic quality with DX10.

"We can create a world that looks and feels more real and is more responsive," Roper said. "We have volumetric fluid smoke that responds to objects that pass through it. We have soft shadows that get softer with distance from the caster."

Of the few DX10 games currently available, including Microsoft's own "Flight Simulator X," differences between DX10 and its predecessor, DX9, are dramatic, with water and atmospheric effects that look more like an actual video recording than a computer approximation of reality.

Still, the slew of DX10-enabled games expected to be released by the Christmas holiday will be compatible with older versions of DirectX. They just won't look as good on DX9 PCs.

Of the 76 million video chips expected to be sold by the end of 2007, only about 16 million will be DX10 compatible, according to Dean McCarron, principle analyst at Mercury Research. Yet DX10 chips should account for about half of $2.2 billion graphics chip market this year, added McCarron, whose figures don't reflect the massive integrated graphics chip market.

While he expects the overall market to remain flat for the next five years, he said DX10 chips will grow to account for about $2 billion of the $2.2 billion industry by 2011.

For now, only Nvidia offers graphics cards that support DX10. Prices range from $600 for a high-end model — as much as a new PS3 console — to less than $100 for a less powerful card.

Rival ATI Technologies Inc., which was acquired by Advanced Micro Devices Inc. for $5.6 billion last year, expects to launch its DX10-capable cards sometime in the second quarter.

Chris Donahue, group manager of Microsoft's Games for Windows unit, admits that DX10 is an example of the PC surpassing the consoles. The company's own Xbox 360, for example, uses a custom version of the older DX9 standard that can't be upgraded.

"Consoles are a snapshot of where the PC is at the time they were made," he said. "The consoles are a step that stays flat for five years. The PC is basically a 45 degree angle."

Still, the special effects that take a room of computers weeks to render for movies like "The Lord of the Rings" remains out of the reach of DX10, said Richard Huddy, a member of AMD's European developer relations team.

But PC graphics technology is closing in fast.

"The human brain is one of the most fussy systems when it comes to reality," he said. "When it comes to pure graphics rendering we certainly haven't cracked the problem to give a better, more convincing reality. We think we have the next 10 years before we catch up with reality."

Solve : The Sims - It worked yesterday and won't today... lol?

I was literaly playing the sims yesterday and to day it won't even load.
All it does is give an error report message.

I have uninstalled and removed all regristry keys by HAND before reinstalling.
I have tried other optical drives.
I have used the various flags recomended in various other posts.
I have done spyware, adware and antivirus.
I have done a regclean.
I have run scandisk.

The part that BOGGLES my mind is the fact that it worked fine for the last 3 or 4 DAYS and then stopped without any changes to the system.

any ideas?EA Games tend to be very dodgy.

Have you tried looking through the EA help-database? I believe there is a Sims uninstaller tool available that MIGHT help you.

If it doesn't, contact EA technical support and don't forget to patch the game before running it.

Solve : Rumor: StarCraft 2 Beta By Year's End??

Answer»

Put on your skeptical goggles because rumors are swirling that StarCraft 2 is finally a reality. The Team LIQUID forums have translated an article from Korean site Fighter Forum that says StarCraft 2 is on the way and a beta will be released at the end of 2007.

LinkI never read articles, I only look at screenies. Unless I'm a bout to buy a game and then I read a quick review.

Besides that, I don't care much for rumours about games. If it hits the STORES and I like it, I'll download it first and buy it LATER on. Which is something that has to be done in today's world, since most game developers dish you un-reyplayable crap for way too much cash.

But Starcraft was neat. What ever happened to Starcraft: Ghost? Ugh StarCraft Ghost, I never liked the idea and I don't really follow CONSOLE only games but believe it's been indefinitely postponed in development. It seemed good at the time, but only if they port it to the PC in a playable form. (Please press the square and/or circle as rapidly as possible - *censored*, I don't have a square and circle and I certainly won't waste my 50 euro costing keyboard on pressing keys as rapidly as possible..)

Solve : the sims: jumping screen??

Answer»

i recently decided to revisit my COLLECTION of sims games and loaded
the sims
the sims: house party
the sims: vacation
the sims: superstar
onto my laptop (it meets all of the requirements for the game) but when i went into the game it looked like this:

the tool bars appear to be jumping around.
i tried re-installing superstar but it made no difference.
at first i was able to create a family and enter properties (although from there i could do nothing as there was no bottom TOOLBAR and the image was scattered) but now if i click anything a box OPENS saying "nobody lives there... create a family... etc..."

any help would be APPRECIATED!What are the game specs?
What are your computer specs?

e.g. ram, os....check your drivers. i've had similar problems with many games and it usually turns out to be drivers of one THING or another if not, then possibly version confliction.

Solve : Emulator Problems?

Answer»

Hi guys I downloaded some roms and try it but in one of my downloads there was an error.

The error says: Can't open. No KNOWN good dump.

What does the dump mean? Is this the same as physical dumping? Also what is the meaning of DUMP in programming, is it a program?

And when there is a physical dump, is it dangerous? Does the computer being damage when this happens?

Sorry for the many questions, I google it but some are very technical and some can lead to nowhere can anyone explain this in SIMPLE ENGLISH. Thank you. 8-) :-? What system are you trying to emulate? You PROBABLY just downloaded a bad ROM.  They're not always reliable.  Nor are they always trustworthy...Ok so dump is just an error nothing more? So when there is a physical dump it is an error on either hardware or software the same with "No known good dump"? If this is what you mean I'll put it my NOTES. Thank you 8-) :-? Quote

Solve : Oblivion Requirements?

Answer»

Hey all,

I recently installed Oblivion to my computer, but to my horror... It lagged during combat. (Even at lowest settings!)

Main computer specs atm:

3.2 Ghz proc
1.5 Gigs of RAM
GeForce 7600Gt card

Now don't you think this should run it perfectly or decent on LOW settings?  :-?

I checked the recommended requirements for the game, and I see no problems.

Help or comments would be awesome!

Thanks,
Mike

That PC should play Oblivion OK, not fantastically but OK.
Definitely better than lagging on medium settings.
Is the PC slow when not gaming?
Could be heat, could be malware, could be a bloated installation.
What OS are you USING?
When was the last time you cleaned your PC out?
What protection do you have?
What kind of processor is that?
And try defragging. Is the PC slow when not gaming?- No, It plays Battlefield 2/2142 and so on on max settings.
What OS are you using?- :-?
When was the last time you cleaned your PC out?-Just a few weeks ago.
What protection do you have?- Currently I am using Norton.
What kind of processor is that?- It is an Intel.
And try defragging. -Ill give that a go

Yeah, its very weird. Everything turned off/lowest settings still LAGS in combat  :-/OS - Operating System.
XP?  Vista?
What version and service pack?
Your processor, I guess it's a Pentium 4 then.
Try defragmenting, see if that helps, and get back to us.Sorry, XP Home Edition... as for the pentium 4, yea it is, I am retarted
Will do , thanks ! try TURNING your norton off then play real quick and see if that helps??After performing the defrag, the game did become less laggy.

Its only at times when its just a bit laggy. I can live

Thanks Calum!

As for the norton idea, ill give it a go.Turning Norton off is a good idea also.
It's good practice to turn off unnecessary background programs when gaming.
But if you play online, leave your AV and firewall on or you are at risk.
If the defrag helped, I bet the game files were just fragmented.
You're welcome anyway.calum the best way to do it would remove norton lolHaha, good point.
Maybe a little extreme, but something to consider.
Eredell, how long do you have left on your subscription?when its over COME find me or someone and well help you get rid of norton and set you up with some better software( for free and if you want to we dont force anything)Hah, 193 days left.
Yeah, Ill turn it off.. (Once I figure out how)
right click the icon in the TASKBAR and select disable

see if that will help the game any There isn't a choice of disable for me.what norton do you have??

Solve : Gaming?

Answer»

Ok, I am just starting pc gaming. Yes, I have been playing consoles forever. Ok, so I bought a xfx 7600 gt (PCIe), and I was wondering, does it help aiming wise? I just got done playing 007 Nightfire, and I sucked. Now I am not as bad of a shot as that game.

If you want my specs they are:
Vista Home Premium (x32 bit)
2 gigs ram
1.8ghz core 2 duo
and on wed. the xfx 7600 gt

I am using the STOCK hp mouse and KEYBOARD. Calum, I am have 2142 and will be up and running by wed. I want to join your clan, I got a headset, so send me the info on your vent, if you have one.Ooh, very nice, another recruit.
I just posted in another topic saying add me, but this is even better.
We don't have a vent or TS server unfortunately, but as the clan grows that's something I'll look into.
I have a lot of free time right now so I may sort it out soon.

Back to the topic . . .
If you're finding you're a bad shot, you need to identify why this is.
It could be that you just need more practice, it can be hard to adjust to PC games if you're used to console games.
The other thing is that it could be your mouse and keyboard, and/or your control setup.
Stock setups are often not ideal, get a real mouse and maybe a better keyboard.
I always thought my old Logitech Pilot was fine, until I got my G5.
Now I can't understand how I got along with the Pilot, the G5 is so much better.
So, I recommend that.
Also, get a decent quality mousemat.
I use the Icemat 2nd edition, granted it's expensive but it really makes a DIFFERENCE.  It'll also alst for ages and it looks great, as does the G5.
As for the keyboard, it's your decision in the end.
If that one's fine, keep it.
If not, look for a quality one.
I advise testing it first to see if you like it.
Some people prefer ergonomic ones for gaming too, so consider that.
In the end, it's the choices you make regarding controls that makes the most difference, arguably.
Try out some setups in single player before you take it online, see what feels best for you and try out lots of different ones, tweak every setting you can to make it right for you.
Everyone is different so everyone has their preferences.

Sorry for the long post, it sort of degenerated into rambling about general gaming tips.
If I've missed the point, let me know and I'll post again.
P.S. Nice PC.Thanks for the compliment. I am gonna get a mx518, I used that one at a friend's house yesterday, and fell in love with it. Maybe it is just practice, but I guess we'll find out when I get my mouse.

Thanks for the post, it helped a lot. I am gonna get that icemat, but I just loved the mx518.

I will see you on 2142.The MX518 is also a very good mouse.
Good decision, I hope you're happy with it.
See you on 2142.
BTW, if you're going to join my clan, you should register on my forum too. Will do that right now. Quote from: PERFECT Agent52 on May 27, 2007, 01:05:40 PM

Will do that right now.
Cool.
Be aware that the site is having some problems right now, if it's down please try again later.hrm.. do you have the 518 already? i have to say, my aim was substantially improved with it, but the gripping on the sides comes off rather easily.. i'm having problems with my logitech g15 keyboard also, the paint's already coming off of my S key, not to mention that it won't register pressing the numpad keys 1, 2, and 3 all at once..Well, I haven't bought it yet, but am probably going too. Do you not like it?

no offense intended, but i personally believe that second life is FAR too "free roaming". the fact that you are able to do virtually anything may lead to users believing that second life is their "second life". the user may lose grip on their own reality as second life becomes their new reality; they may be enveloped so much by their "god-like" power and anonymity, that their own life may appear as dull and boring. the user may forget about improving his/her career or accomplishing their schoolwork, and may, in fact, spend countless hours playing a game, and looking FORWARD to playing a game, that achieves nothing in life. i see it as being highly addictive, dangerous, and destructive.

P.S. please refrain from spamming as it is not appreciated on this board. saying it once is enough. do not be surprised if your post is edited by a mod.I'm all about Dink Smallwood.  Certainly not the most advanced game, but it PROVIDES a few hours of fun.  And there are tons of mods available for download, which provide even more fun.

I'm also fond of Legend of the Green Dragon, which is RUN on hundreds of different servers, and it's different on every site.  My favorites, though, are Age of Dragon Legends (temporarily down for a week or two) and Dragon Machine (good for beginners...if you join a clan).

And despite its simplicity, I used to love AdventureQuest. Quote

I know so many Americans who do nothing but Second Life... they made PC games on second life like 'counter-Strike' and 'command and conquer'... thats just sad IMO

you hear about the guy who actually died after spending so long on it? (either this or WoW i forget, there both wastes of time)

No, not really.  Ha.  There's no main storyline, but different quests are created every week or so.  It's actually pretty pointless.  You don't even interact with other players (besides on the forum).  But it can be entertaining if you don't play it a whole lot.Have Fun...Nice find.

Solve : Gamecube portable??

I found a few articles about a gamecube portable. Here's a pic of it:

There are some other ones that ill put up here later. On the outside of the case, it has an mp3/cd player function. While i'm not sure of the details I think it will be a gamecube with a jumpdrive and dvd-r mini for the music. may even play divx movies not sure. Not even sure if it's REAL!WoW never would have saw that coming.

8-)fffreakwhat do u mean by that??? This is a fan-made cube-portable. Top one's CALLED Gamecube advance and bottom is called gamecube portable. i think i like the top one better. Kind'of hoping they'd release a cube portable when they did the wii.No what I meant was, Nintendo has pretty much always the portable video GAME leader. I was suprised to see SOMETHING like the "Gamecube advanced", Is this even legit? Does it work for sure? Where did you find those pictures?

8-)fffreakI got the pics from google. The top one is unsure and the author is unknown. The bottom is for sure and the author is known (i forget his name though)I dont think they should make a gamecube portable the gamecube itself didnt do very well.  But who knows.........What else do u suggest after the DS dies? That second one is the true definition of "portable".  I bet that baby just slides in and out of your pocket like a champ.Wow. This was made by amateurs? Cool!

What's the video card?
Has the game every played properly on your system?
Have you downloaded the latest updates for the game?
Have you downloaded the latest DRIVERS for your hardware?

Looks like you're running very low on available memory, 36MB of 256MB, which might be part of your problem, but looks like you still meet the minimum system REQUIREMENTS for BF1942.Sounds like the graphics card it not supported/too old.

I had the same problem with NFS: Most Wanted, when I ran it on a 32MB TNT2

Couldn't see any of the gauges, roads or textures....just geometric objects

Or the opposite.

Me and my mate used to love playing Battlezone II against each other and online, and it worked fine with my old GeForce2 MX and his early Radeon card (don't remember what model), but when I upgraded to a newer card (ATI Radeon 9600), the text all started APPEARING as squares instead of letters.it could also be a missing font... it could also be a missing font...

That does make sense, when I restored my computer with a restoration disk for xp last month, it mentioned that it could not find my fonts. same thing happens for microsoft word, but not for notepad or wordpad. maybe when I restored it, it only restored fonts for built in applications rather than added applications I downloaded later. is that possable? anyone know the font type for battlefield 1942?I would just reinstall it from the diskThe text in Battlefield 1942 becomes really BLOCKY and hard to read when you set the resolution up past 1024x768 and there is no way around it. What resolution are you running it at?

Solve : Is Elemental War of Magic any good.?

Answer»

Ok so my wife and I are getting a little tired of playing Civilization 4 and are looking for a new game of the similar type. I am wondering if any of the fine members here have tried out "Elemental War of Magic" and would like to know what the general thoughts are on it?

We tried Civilization 5 but didn't care for it.Do they have a TRIAL version or demo of the game that you can download and try?I have tried to find the demo but can't seem to locate one. Quote from: mroilfield on November 23, 2010, 08:39:30 AM

I have tried to find the demo but can't seem to locate one.
I didn't find one on the site, so the chances are pretty good that there isn't one. There was supposed to be one some 2 months ago or so. I don't recall it EVER showing up anywhere and it isn't to be found now either it seems. From the pre-released testers and reviewers, I've heard they are not impress and it's scored low.  Decent strategic FOUNDATION, but horrific BUGS, missing FEATURES, a poor interface, and plenty of other defects. I would suggest it's rubbish (4/10).

Good luck finding a great game to play! Maybe go for Starcraft II if your online connection is good and that is your style of real-time strategy gameplay. I would make a lot more suggestions as I'm a gamer, but I more perfer First Person Shooters and RPGs, etc. The only turn-based strategy game I can currently think of you might be interested in is Heroes of Might and Magic.Azzaboi,

Thanks for the info. I played the old starcraft games but don't think my wife would like playing it very much. We are looking for a game that we can play together.

I myself am a gamer also but my wife and I like playing different types of games so it is rare when we find one like Civ that we enjoy playing together. Quote from: mroilfield on November 22, 2010, 01:40:39 PM

I am planning to purchase and play Civilization 5, I just need to update first my video card. Care to share why you don't like it?I guess it was just the changes they made to the game. It didn't really feel like a "Civ" game. I would suggest that you download the demo before you buy it.Thanks for the advice. I will do that.

Solve : Need For Speed Hot Pursuit 2010?

Answer»

Had anyone played NFS Hot Pursuit 2010...
I played it the gameplay is nice but the graphics are not soo pleasing...
What you all people think about it...I've seen it but haven't played it, I actually thought the graphics were really good.  What display setting are you using?I think the graphics are fantastic and the gameplay sucks.  I really wanted to enjoy this game, but it wasn't nearly as fun as the original. Quote from: CBMatt on December 06, 2010, 05:40:43 AM

I think the graphics are fantastic and the gameplay sucks.  I really wanted to enjoy this game, but it wasn't nearly as fun as the original.

That's why I still have High stakes installed, even on my win7 machine

Personally, I really don't like this fascination with pretty graphics in more recent games. It doesn't hurt, but in some games, making things look pretty quite literally takes a backseat to making the game fun. Many newer games are practically just technology demos.

And to think that the 640x480 with 16-color display used by early flight simulators got praise of the form "it looks realistic". For comparison, here is a screenshot of what was considered "realistic:

"I feel like I'm really flying"

"I can see my house from here"

and yet, when you show somebody today something like this:

you get technical sychophants TRYING to give "advice" to the game developers by saying things like "the FLAMES could be more realistic" or, "the  steering wheel on the car would have totally been blown off, that's so unrealistic the graphix suk".

Basically, it seems that with every step forward in graphics technologies consumers take two steps forward in what they expect, completely forgetting that simply having graphics on a PC at all used to be little more then a pipe dream.
This isn't to say that a game with good graphics can't be good; of course not. IMO JC2 (pictured above) is a fine example of a excellent game, and the graphics certainly add to it; but then you have games like, say the NFS:underground series (or going off of CBMatt's comments, HP 2010), that literally are worse genre-wise then their predecessors (high-stakes,HP2, etc) and are good because they are "shiny".I agree completely.  As games continue to advance, many gamers become increasingly demanding and picky.  The younger generations have lost track of what really makes a game important.  One of my favorite RACING games is Blur, which looks fantastic and is INCREDIBLY fun, but people constantly complain about it not being realistic enough.  They say the cars don't crash realistically or that they don't control like real cars...nevermind the fact that they shoot freakin' energy blasts and emit shockwaves.  It's an arcade racer and the entire point of it is to have fun; it's not supposed to be some kind of simulation like GT5.

I think graphics are important for a number of different reasons, but nothing is more important than having fun, which can easily be achieved with just a couple of STICKS and a ball.  I guess I'm bound to have a better appreciation because I grew up in a time when the stories/dialog were written down in books (Wasteland) or when we sometimes didn't get graphics at all (and yet we still had a blast).  That's why, when he is old enough, I'm going to start my son off with the classics so he can witness the progression in games first-hand like I did.

Solve : Games freeze computer after barely minutes of play?

Answer»

Hi all. I have been recently struggling with an issue that seems to lead to all negative signs.

Basically, after barely 1-2 MINUTES in any 3D game, the computer locks up, the screen pixelizes in a mostly purple colour and the only way out is a hard reset. I'd attach a screenshot, but it's pretty much impossible to obtain one. In some games, this doesn't seem to occur until the game is being actively rendered (so I can wait around for a while on a main menu, but as soon as I load a game it locks up). I've researched somewhat on the issue and everything I've seen seems to be linked to the Video Card being fried, overheated etc. Naturally I started to fear the worst as I'm not really in the best financial position right now to spend on a brand new card.

I guess the reason I'm posting this is just to be able to hear from some experts and see what you guys think on the issue. I'm not really expecting a miraculous fix but if there's any chance I don't need to replace my Video Card, I will grab at it. I have run a program called FurMark and, though it hasn't locked up the computer, it shows temps. of the Video Card maxing out at around 75 degrees Celsius if that information will help. I have also checked the cooling fan on the video card while the computer and games are running and it is working fine, though it does appear to making a loud whirring noise (which has been going on long before the current problem).

My system specs are as follow (what I could find):

Microsoft WINDOWS Vista Home Premium Edition Service Pack 2 (build 6002), 32-bit
2.5 GB RAM
nVidia GeForce 8600 GT
1.5 GB Video RAM
AMD Phenom(tm) 9600 Quad-Core Processor

Not sure what else to ADD to the list...

Any help would be much APPRECIATED as I am becoming very frustrated with this issue!Perhaps a runtime error or your graphic card has a defect? I'm not sure...

I have already a problem like that and it was the graphic card  Do your computer specs support the games REQUIREMENTS?
You can try Can You Run It? to make sure that your system supports the games in question.

Have you tried to reinstall the video card driver?
Video Driver for your card.

What else do you have running in the background that might be interupting it?

C:\Program Files\Activision\Transformers - War For Cybertron\TransGame\CookedPC\MP_UND_Gorge_ART_m.xxx

It tells me to verify this file exists by finding it. I've tried, I can't. I know basically nothing about this depth into computers and every time I press retry, the error COMES back a minute later, meaning the retry has failed. I'm really UPSET that I can't even install the STUPID thing.

Solve : nVidia card says yes, computer says no.?

Answer»

Hello, 2 years ago, I bought my first computer, a Gateway GT5692, which came with a lot of memory but not much in way of a video card. Shortly after I bought the computer, I bought a copy of Batman:Arkham Asylum  before I knew anything about video cards I finally invested in a nvidia GeForce GTS 450 card and when I saw how much better my games were looking, I thought all my problems were solved, yeah right. Being a huge FAN of the X-Men, I recently bought a copy of "X-Men Legends 2:Rise of Apocalypse" and when I CHECKED the com patability with the nvidia it said excellent but when I tried to play the game, I got nothing but a blue cursor in the MIDDLE of the screen. I went to Activision's  support site, found some tips, and tried out each one. They were all the usual advice(Check Drivers, Check requirements, shut off all BACKGROUND programs, etc...). After I did all of this and still got zilch, I decided to see if the Audio Drivers might be causing a problem, disabled all of them and ran the program. Success!!! I realized I couldn't play in silence though, so I looked online for non-HD audio drivers. All of mine, nVidia and Realtek, were both HD. When I was finished installing the new drivers, I tried the game again. Nothing but the cursor. So I went back and disabled the Audio drivers once more and this time it didn't do anything to help.  I have contacted Activisions support but, believe it or not, my email account was stolen a day after I sent in the request and I haven't been able to get my account back yet.
If anyone can offer some advice I would really appreciate it, I'm dying to play my X-Men game.
Computer Info:
Gateway GT5692
Vista 64-bit HOME Premium, all available service packs
nVidia GeForce GTS 450
4 GB RAM
500 GB Hard Drive
Realtek Sound card
I use AVG and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware security programs.
I will be happy to send whatever other information you might need. Thank you again and sorry for the long post, I wanted to get all the information in.

Solve : BRINK! Whos looking forward to this??

Answer»

It looks like an amazing game, I am especially looking forward to the SMART terrain SYSTEM. I love FPS games where you have to think 3d.

http://www.gametrailers.com/video/e3-09-brink/49785From what I've seen of it, I'm not really all that excited about it. MAYBE I'm just watching the wrong videos, but it looks like just another FPS to me.It's basically an FPS trying to ADD Mirror's Edge elements.  They're really excited about this system of theirs, but I'm not terribly impressed by something that simply lets me push a button while my character does special tricks.  I'd MUCH rather be given the ability to do the tricks myself (just imagine this with Kinect capabilities).  But with that said, it still looks like fun and I'll eventually pick it up if I can't procure a copy from Bethesda, although they're usually pretty good about sending stuff out.I don't look forward to any games.

Generally I tend to glance backwards. Mostly because older games are a lot easier to RECORD gameplay of so I can make stupid commentary and generally embarrass myself on youtube.

Solve : Sims 3/CPU + CPU Speed??

Answer»

Hey guys!
I'm a complete Sims geek, and I actually bought a new laptop in order to play the game on Monday. (Thank god for xmas sales!)
It REACHES all the specs, minus the cpu and cpu speed. I'm a total doofus when it comes to game specs, but using the canyourunit website, it says that

"
CPU
Minimum: (XP) 2.0 GHz P4 processor or equivalent; (Vista/7) 2.4 GHz P4 processor or equivalent [If built-in graphics chipsets then 2.6 GHz Pentium D CPU, or 1.8 GHz Core 2 Duo, or equivalent.]
You Have: Intel(R) Celeron(R) CPU 900 2.20GHz"

and the CPU Speed
"CPU Speed
Minimum: (XP) 2.0 GHz P4 processor or equivalent; (Vista/7) 2.4 GHz P4 processor or equivalent [If built-in graphics chipsets then 2.6 GHz Pentium D CPU, or 1.8 GHz Core 2 Duo, or equivalent.]
You Have: 2.19 GHz"

As I've said, I'm a complete tool when it comes to pc game specs, but I've been informed, (rightly or wrongly), that a low cpu speed will just make the game a wee tad slow. I'm okay with a wee bit of lagging, but not a major amount. Heres the rest of my system specs for good measure-

Model-Dell [email protected]
Processor-Intel (R)Celerom(R) CPU 900 2.20GHZ 2.19 GHz
RAM-2.00 GB
System type- 64-OPERATING SYSTEM

ANd the game specs-
FOR WINDOWS XP

* 2.0 GHz P4 processor or equivalent
* 1 GB RAM
* 128 MB Video Card with support for PIXEL Shader 2.0
* The latest version of DIRECTX 9.0c
* Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2
* At LEAST 6.1 GB of hard drive space with at least 1 GB of additional space for custom content and saved games

FOR WINDOWS VISTA

* 2.4 GHz P4 processor or equivalent
* 1.5 GB RAM
* 128 MB Video Card with support for Pixel Shader 2.0
* Microsoft Windows Vista Service Pack 1
* At least 6.1 GB of hard drive space with at least 1 GB of additional space for custom content and saved games

For computers using built-in graphics chipsets under Windows, the game requires at least:

* Intel Integrated Chipset, GMA 3-Series or above
* 2.6 GHz Pentium D CPU, or 1.8 GHz Core 2 Duo, or equivalent
* 0.5 GB additional RAM

THe laptop is a dell inspiron 1545 on WiNdows seven,if that helps. So whats the verdict? Do you think I COULD play it?

Thanks very very much for reading, and any help would be greatly appriciated!!

I recently got a new graphics card for christmas, Nvidia GTX460 1024mb, replacing my 9400GT, which works fine, untill i play GTA 4, randomly, from about between 10 and 60 minutes, ill get BSODed and obviously my computer will reset. ive googled, and the problem seems to be quite unknown and techies appear to be guessing all over the place as to what the problem may be, there was no problem (besides obviously performance) with my OLD card, ever since the GTX460, its crashed.

my specs:
Intel Core2 Quad CPU Q8400 2.66Ghz
2.68 GHz, 3.50GB RAM... ive forgotten where to FIND anything else... sorry

also, some have SUGGESTED a heat problem, so if anyone could tell me how i can properly check the temperature, it would be much appreciated.

also, i noticed that during the bluescreen on the top an error of IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL appeared.

Can anyone help?   Thanks a lot!!the RAM

RAM generally decreases over time of use due to clogging up and natural causes,

how long have you had the notebook, if you have had it more than a year, then i suggest not to play it, 'cos you will *censored* up your hard drive or whatever's in that thing and the game still wont run.

EITHER get some more RAM, (if you can for notebooks, probably not)
or fix your desktop comp.Ignore the above post.

Solve : StarCraft II Video Card assistance?

Answer»

All right... well... my computer is pretty good...

System Model: Dell Inspiron 560
OS: Windows 7 Home Premium (x64) (build 7600)
Processor: 2.93 gigahertz Intel Core2 Duo
HDD: 984GB
RAM: 8GB

Not bad, right? Well... I seem to have a underwhelming graphics card... and I was LOOKING to upgrade, since i'd like to play a few games (Sims 3, Starcraft II, etc) on higher settings... but... when I used the website "Can You Run It"... this is the output I GOT, and it doesn't really make a whole lot of sense to me...

if the PICTURE is too SMALL or something..... http://img375.imageshack.us/img375/7926/sc2hh.png

It seems that I don't need an upgrade... but the site says I do... and I'm rather confused.

If this site is wrong, or if I'm just reading it wrong, what graphics card should I buy? I believe the power supply is 300 or a little more... which is kinda bad, but yeah. it recommends an upgrade because you don't have a graphics card, you're using on-board graphics.Well, you can buy just about any graphics card that matches you PCI or AGP slot, these are the ones that Blizzard has tested and approved for StarCraft 2, that being SAID, you can use most any relatively new graphics card for StarCraft 2. The question is how high of settings do you want to play on? the higher the settings (for StarCraft) the more robust the card should be

Solve : Gaming mouse.?

Answer»

I've been playing DDO alot.  It's my first online game I've ever played with a keyboard and mouse and I'm THINKING about spending some money on a mouse.  Do any of you have favorites or ones not to buy?I use a Logitech MX620. The Logitech G5 is a bit more expensive but is very popular.I use the g500.   A little overkill but still a good mouse.Logitech have some quite good gamers mice which last gaming.
Razer is better quality for hardcore gaming.
Razer mousepad are great for any lazer mouse.

Depends on FEATURES and the cost you want to spend.

First look at:

Tracking Resolution - 1800dpi+ is good

Image Processing - 5.8 megapixels/second+ is good

Max Acceleration / Max Speed / Responsiveness - if your a First Person Shooter styled player but likes snipering you might want a speed toggle control. Some gaming mouse have weights which you can add/remove to change the feel and control. This all depends on your STYLE of playing.

Durability - 10 million clicks+ / 250 kilometers+, more the better life span! Quote from: Doug on September 24, 2010, 10:19:32 AM

Personally, I've never found any of the fancy "gamer mice" to be particularly useful. This goes double for the keyboards that separated or do weird things to the WASD keys (which is particularly useless to me because I have settled on ESDF (one key over) for reasons that I have long forgotten and are probably no longer relevant.)

For the most part, a standard two-button plus wheel mouse has proven sufficient, for all of my needs. The important thing for me is to balance "gamability" with conventional usability- keyboards designed for gaming are never particularly well suited for PHP or C# programming. An exception might be made for mice, which often have all sorts of new buttons that you can bind; and the "sensitivity" thumbwheel that is present on some. Personally I find some dongles rather useless; for example, ratehr then having to fiddle with a thumbwheel in any sort of "sniper" mode, I generally just change the binding for my zoom key to decrease sensitivity when I zoom in and restore it when I zoom out. IMO "sensitivity" ratings on any scale are overrated. Even the oldest serial mouse has pixel-perfect sensitivity on any attainable resolution, and I've found that mice that purport "higher sensitivity" simply mean I have to reduce my mouse speed slider. More sensitive? probably. Necessary? Not so much, I don't think.

for wireless mice/keyboards, once should pay particular attention to the battery life; last thing you want is to suddenly lose mouse control because your batteries die in the middle of a firefight! (that actually happened to me once, I managed to escape using the keyboard to strafe away from danger, since my opponent was far less at home in "The Abandoned Base" map. I hid in the water and nearly drowned while I was changing the batteries of the mouse though. Good times. Some people even advocate having a "backup" mouse PLUGGED in in case of that eventuality. Of course since I spent most of my time in Visual Studio tracking down bugs rather then in Quake tracking down opponents it doesn't fit with my use pattern very well. But this thread is hardly about my use pattern.

Personally, I consider "gamer" designed keyboards and mice to be entirely vain and mostly a cash cow for their manufacturers. I'd garner that some "gamer" lines are really just their standard hardware thrown into a glossy black casing, with a name that uses far too many X's and Z's to be considered grammatically sound.Hello

I have played counter strike source professionally(2002). (No questions about that please) I have basically tried all mouse out there, and I am a mouse freak, so I have wasted a lot of money on tons of mice, luckily I have been able to sell them forward.

The first thing you should think about is the mouse shape. Most people like ergonomic mice. They are made for right or left hand, and they are really comfortable. Personally, I think those mice are bad for your hand. I like the hybrid ambidextrous mice. (made for left and right hand) The ambidextrous mice are symmetrical, they are the same on both sides. (I would like to mention that a lot of pro games as well like both types. There is no mouse type that is better than other mice, speaking of shape that is)

After you have found out what kind of shape, you should try to get a feel of your DPI preference. Some people are way too hung up on buying mice with high DPI. The truth is, that the DPI is way too high for most monitors to even discover. The movements with high DPI mice, lets say 6000DPI. The mouse has higher resolution than the monitor, which makes it a waste of money...

I just want to point out that there are still some, or a lot of pro games that still use the good old microsoft intellimouse. It has 400DPI (VERY LOW), and they still play better worse or the same as other pros.

The thing is, you need to find a mouse that fits your feel and preference.

I am using the Steelseries XAI mouse. It is a bit overpriced. But it is ambidextrous, and it has a better sensor than the microsoft intellimouse 1.1. I have my DPI at about 2000.

One more thing. Choosing a mouse, almost most important is to save money. There are 10000 shops that sell the mice, and the price is allways different. Find the cheapest one, and hopefully you have planned your buy for a nice mouse you will be happy with. Quote from: HyeinJi on October 01, 2010, 12:04:01 PM

A "gaming" mouse will almost never be cheap. And trying to save money on a mouse isn't the way to go either. You'll find yourself spending more money repeated changing that mouse than you would just buying a quality mouse to begin with.

Again, not all expensive mice are worth it either. The Silverstone Raven gaming mouse has got to be one of the worst mice I've ever had.I was told wireless mouse not as good as wired mouse for gaming. Is this true?

I know many gaming mouse are wireless like ones made by Logitech. Quote from: 2x3i5x on October 12, 2010, 04:51:36 PM

I suppose at one point it was, but the wireless technology for mice has improved so much that most people wouldn't know the difference.A4 Tech X7 - Best ever!!! Quote from: kennyfreid on December 11, 2010, 04:52:37 AM
A4 Tech X7 - Best ever!!!

My personal opinion, A4 equipment is rubbish.my personal favorite mouse is a sidewinder mouse made by Microsoft it has a bunch of neat features such as the ability to change the weight of the mouse or DPI setting between 3 settings  400, 800, or 2000.
takes a little getting use to but is a very nice mouse and definitely worth looking at.ever tried the Razer products?I use a prestigo gaming mouse that I picked up quite cheap on ebay.

You should do a search there for some cheap mouses.

Solve : Game Making Software?

Answer»

Hello,

I have a friend who loves games and he wants to try and learn to make one.

Anyone know any good free software that he could use.Well, making a game from scratch requires programming knowledge, and quite a bit of it at that. There are options out there that have editors to make games that run on certain engines. All that is required then is a little patience and some imagination. There are far too many to list, and it would all depend on what kind of games he was interested in creating. You could GOOGLE for something like "game creation software" or something similar. There are a ton of free options out there, all depending on what kind of game he'd like to make. Quote

all depending on what kind of game he'd like to make.

Here are some good options:

If he wants to make a 3D game:

1) Unity 3D (not free, but THE BEST)
2) Irrlicht Engine (free, need to program in c)
3) Sauerbraten (good for mapping, code can be modified to make own game)
4) DarkBasic (don't know much about this)

If he wants a 2D game:

1) Flash (not free, need to program)
2) Game Maker (trial, not free)
3) Allegro (free, need to program in c)
4) Multimedia Fusion (not free, for people who are too lazy to program)
5) QBASIC (free, good for classic dos games, need to program in basic)
6) AGS (if he's familiar with the classic Sierra quest games) Quote
Irrlicht Engine
I think there is a .NET port if this engine so it can be used from .NET. Not sure, though. I know that IRRKlang, the sound library by the same author, works in .NET, since I'm using it (although I've since "switched" to using BASS.NET by default).

For DarkBASIC, from what I've seen of it it looks a heck of a lot more like FORTRAN or COBOL then BASIC:
Quote
XRotate OBJECT 1, 180
Scale Sprite 1, 100
Mirror Bitmap 1
Set Text Font "Arial"
Set Light To Object Position
If Joystick Fire A() Then GoSub PlayerShoot
Not that that is necessarily a bad thing but being familiar with BASIC won't really translate since it uses a more complicated and verbose lexicon. It is certainly powerful, and great for beginners that have never programmed ANYTHING before, mostly because of that grammar.

Also omitted from that list is SDL, which can be used from nearly any language (and works cross-platform).

QBASIC is all but useless. FreeBASIC is both easier to acquire, supports the same syntax, has more modern features (checks website)... Claims to have object orientation, so maybe he finally ADDED support for classes to the language... either way, There is no reason to ever use QBASIC (or QuickBASIC, for that matter) ever again.

im pretty sure my mom used fortran or c++ to make a video game D:You can make levels for Valve games using Valve Hammer Editor. Its free and doesn't require any programming, but it takes time to get good with it.

Solve : GTA VC Auto position of guns?

Answer»

Ok so recently i have been playing my pc version of GTA VC with a USB logitech game pad. My question is am i able to get the game to auto position the gun and have a pink aim circle like on the ps2? Im having trouble positioning the gun with the game pad to a position. Its difficult to aim.here is an example in a video on youtube if u don't understand what i mean. I can sometimes have a hard time explaining things. Anyway in the video the shooting starts at 1:15. U will see a purplish pinkish cirlce THATS what i want on the pc version. Can i activate this or is there a mod i can get to get this?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0mqFC5SMXwE

THANKS,
ComdaOn the PC don't you hold right click to bring up the circle? That's what I recall from GTA3 anyhow.
Maybe check the controller config before you load a game to see if you can re-map the key to a BUTTON on your game pad.Is he talking about.. well, what I ALWAYS call "Z-Targeting" (lol) that's definitely in the configuration menus. GTA3's is that box thing that shows up and VC is the circular thing that could have easily been shown with a image rather then making us watch a vid. After watching the vid....
I believe this:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yX6LYdBqd-g is what you are looking for yes this is what i've been looking for. Thank-you  bothKurtiskain and  BC_programmer for helping me out with this.

Minecraft was unable to start because it failed to find an accelerated OpenGL mode.
This can usually be fixed by updating the video card drivers.

Sure, it looks like a simple game but it is not- It get's my GPU and CPU fans running full tilt after a few minutes, which I cannot even say of Just CAUSE 2.

Aside from trying This driver, which is reported to work for some people, you should also make sure Java is updated.

Also, the two games you noted both work when the pixel format is emulated. Minecraft(or more precisely Java) requires that it be accelerated for whatever reason.yeahhh i have just updated java now would there be any way to accelerate  the pixcels ?
