Solve : Vista regulate my games??

Answer»

Ok I have a good computer, but it is horrible at the same time. it HAS to be vista, I'm virus free, I defragment once a WEEK, and error check. I have 250 gb free. Vista service pack 2. Now I KNOW I need a new graphics card for my games, but they play worse on this computer than an older one that didn't have vista. It can't even play Rome total war, and it was able to before. here is the weirdest part.. When I play TES:IV Oblivion I start out for the 1st minute or 2 of game play with good fps. 30-40..but after about a minute of play it crashes to just 4fps no matter where I'm at. Like I said its bad.

I have a 500 gb hardrive, 4gbs of ram, nvidia geforce 8400 GS and vista service pack 2. I've had this computer for about 4 months. Is this a laptop or desktop computer?
Does it have a model number?
How fast is the processor?
What are the specs of your other, older computer?Old computer was crap haha, it was all from 2002. This is a desktop. I have a good processer, amd x2 dual core 5200+. Quote from: IstNick on July 09, 2010, 03:56:17 PM

I guess that's an OK processor, since that was out in...2007 I think (just a guess).

Anyway...either your CPU or video card is overheating.

OK one BIG problem, the 8400GS card. It is junk as far as gaming goes. The Bit transfer RATE is only 64 and you should have something with a bit transfer rate of 128 and that is only one aspect of the card. Although this doesn't APPLY to your situation, Bethesda Stuff doen't play well with Intel Quad cores for some reason. Most just go into Dual Core mode to play them ( AMD Quads do fine from what I've seen ). Quote from: coastie65 on August 10, 2010, 01:49:41 PM

Very good point.

IMO, the only good nVidia gaming cards in the 8000 series is the 8800s (GS, GT, GTS, GTX, Ultra).

Go here for a good video card hierarchy:

Solve : Best place to download games???

Answer»

Can someone tell me a GOOD place to download games please. I live in the UnitedKingdom and would like to purchase a game called il2 Cliffs Of Dover. The game is available for download on the 25th March, but I'm not sure the best place to get it. Any HELP would be welcome. Thanks!!I am finding it odd the nobody can SUGGEST a good place to download games from on this forum. Has nobody taken the step of downloading a game yet? I thought it would be nice to get some feedback before I download one since I wouldn't like to end up getting ripped of. I think you can download games from steam, but the last time I downloaded steam it BROUGHT my computer to crawl, so I don't fancy doing it that way.I think the problem is that there isn't a large gaming community here and you are asking about a game that is only popular within a certain niche.

Now, with that said...as far as I know, Cliffs of Dover will only be available through retail and Steam.  So, if you want to download it, you'll unfortunately have to use the Steam service.  I'm not a fan of Steam, so I feel your pain.  But for what it's worth, you might be able to download the game early when it releases in the US on March 22.I can't even think of another "download service" that works akin to steam. No. Of course not. hardware isn't steam powered, software is.

And Watt's engine, but on a Computer help forum assuming a poster is referring to that would be foolish, wouldn't it. Quote from: BC_Programmer on March 14, 2011, 06:20:01 PM

Impulse and Games For Windows LIVE are both similar, although not nearly as robust.  Steam has definitely monopolized client-based online game distribution.  But then there are also sites like Direct2Drive, GamersGate, GameTap, Good Old Games, and many others that do the same thing but without a client.

Streaming cloud-based services like GAIKAI and OnLive might be worth mentioning, but they of course work differently.I have been searching for the best site to download all popular games. I have been downloading games before, search in google and download, but its not nice and it took time to download.Hi,
You can download games from many of sites available at internet. And the most popular site is www.cnet.com and you can find many of games through google.Cnet isn't exactly known as a source of games and the other site you mentioned is a known distributor of malware and other malicious software. (I'm not mentioning the name of the other site because I'm recommending to the moderators that the name be removed to no one goes there.)

Solve : Burnout Paradise PC demo?

Answer»

Does SOMEONE know how to hack the time limit in the Burnout Paradise DEMO?  Like with a trainer?

ThanksNot sure about this game specifically, but most of the modern demo's are pretty good at avoiding cracking. Sometimes its as easy as setting your date back on your system time to PLAY again without it stating that your demo time has expired, but its more common these days for the demo to have a counter built into the source to track play time and then to cancel game play when the limit has been reached. If you dont store important data on your system you could use a re-install like ability of a system restore point to play it over and over again sometimes. This requires however that you create a restore point before you start the timer or that you revert your system back to say yesterday when the game worked or yesterday when the game demo wasnt even installed yet, then reinstall the demo and play it to the time limit again, and repeat this PROCESS as many times as you want to keep playing the demo. BUT its more work to do this over and over again and you should just buy the game to avoid making extra work for yourself. Any real crack to the game WOULD be illegal....but restoring your system back to a point when it worked isnt illegal, but its bypassing the demo's intent to limit play and get you to buy it so they make their $$$.

Solve : Games run too fast?

Nvidia Customer HELP:

or POST a topic in the Nvidia forums for all them graphic card geeks:
http://forums.nvidia.com
ThanksI had that problem with several games. As I changed video CARDS I got more and more trouble with games, specially older ones. I just tried several combinations in my NVIDIA control panel (GeForce 9400GT) and I finally got a normal speed in one of the games with trouble. In my case, in each configuration (3D configuration controler) has a description and USUAL situations (they appear when you leave your mouse pointer over the characteristic). There I found that some recommended certain settings for older games. I changed those and also turned some quality options to a higher graphic configuration. It worked! I will now install other games that I have uninstalled for that problem, and I hope they'll work to. I've seen this problem with older games that are meant to run in DOS...but not modern titles...

Solve : Mass Effect 2 for free for Dragon Age II owners?

Answer»

A lot of people don't seem to know this, so I'd just LIKE to pass this on.

As a "thank you" for Bioware fans, everyone who purchased a copy of Dragon Age II can download Mass Effect 2 for free. The offer is good until April 30th, so you can still buy Dragon Age II until then and get Mass Effect 2 for free. It seems it doesn't matter how you purchased your Dragon Age II (online or in a store): "All Dragon Age II game owners who purchased a new copy of Dragon Age II and follow the below steps before April 30th at 11:59pm PDT qualify."

Here's the link to Bioware's page for this offer:
http://dragonage.bioware.com/me2offerWow this was a random gem... I had purchased DAII about a month ago -  Worked for me, thanks.I forgot to ALSO mention that if you ALREADY own Mass Effect 2, like me, this adds the RIGHTS to get the digital download of the game and gives you a second key. If something happens to either of your ME2 DVDs, you'll have a free backup in the EA Download Manager (but with a new key).

Solve : Sim 2 Packs Question?

Answer»

I got Holiday Edition a while back cause everyone was transfering to the new sims.  Any rate I had Double Deluxe Installed which I unistalled since I could get Holiday Editon too.  Thing is that it says LIKE one is all ready installed when I go to put the second DISK in.  I checked the back of the cases an says with the additon of my other packs.   Sims 2 Seasons needs Double Deluxe or the Sims 2 Holiday Editon then Bon Voyage states the same an same with universty. So I checked Holiday Editon to see that it says Updated for 2006 includes the sims plus the sims 2 happy holiday stuff pack.  So in other words I cant have both though Double Deluxe has NIGHT life stuff as well.  I was told that would WORK though so I dont know.

So I cant have Double Deluxe an Holiday Editon together then? Do you have the original Sims 3?

If so, let's called it A. Double Deluxe is B and Holiday Edition is C.

You can install AB and AC but not ABC?I NEVER said that I had sims 3.  Thats what I thought, I had mailed them though an said that I should be able to have them both an work.  Is it possible to have like two seperate accounts an have them on the same machine.  Like I have a second harddrive could I install out to it?

Solve : PC Restarting While Playing Game...?

Answer»

As per title says, my pc is being restarted when i am playing SNIPER Ghost Warrior, I am playing that game since last 2 weeks but didn't get any problem but since 2 days back all of sudden it start being restarted as soon as I start the game,

I have tried to play BattleField 2 as well but same thing happening with this game as well, (i am playing BF2 since last 2 months or so but never got that problem)

My system is Intel Core 2 Quad 2.66GHz
MotherBoard is Asus P5K-V
Memory is 2 GB
Graphic Card is GeForce GTS 250 1GB
PSU is ATek 600
Cooler is Silent Knight
Casing is Normal/Unknown

I also want to mention that PC doesn't get RESTART when its in idling position or surfing internet, I will be very thankful if you GUYS could help me to sort out the problem,  I would run memtest86 on your system to make sure you dont have a ram stick that acts up under load. If memtest86 passes, try swapping power supply if you have a spare as for games draw LOTS of electricity to run all hardware resources and you could dip your voltage below the dropout (reset) voltage of your system. If the games reset the system immediately its more likely a Ram or Power Supply issue, but if it restarts after running for a short period of time it could be thermal shutdown reset. The dust on everything in the pictures isnt that bad, but its best to have a clean system free of dust. I would also SUGGEST checking the thermal paste on your CPU between the heatsink and CPU, but your CPU has thermal throttling, and the worst that would happen if there was inadequate thermal compound would be that the CPU would slow down to cool down, which would usually cause lag, slow response etc. Older CPUs that didnt have thermal throttling would cause reboots, crashes, and smoke shows.

Solve : How do i install a game on windows 7?

Answer»

Hi guys, when i had XP i had no problem DOWNLOADING and opening an old game called Star Trek Armada 2 (here is a link to the game --> http://armada2.filefront.com/files/Armada_2/Official_Releases/Demo;788 ) however when i open it in Windows 7 it gives me options on what programme to open it with.
Being new to Windows 7 i am a little unsure what i NEED to open it with.

Here is a screen shot of what it asks me.

Thanks in advance

AndyWhat file extension dose it have? .Exe, .Rar, .zip, .Iso?It's a .Exe fileCan you run other .Exe files?Hi thanks for your reply.
I downloaded two .Exe files this morning and was able to open them no problem.
Could this be a problem with the file itself?Under the browser - Press ALT (for the folder option menu) > Tools > Folder Options
Then the 'View' Tab and untick 'Hide extensions for known file types' if that is ticked.
(Microsoft's way of easily hiding double extension viruses from you, eg. game.exe.vbs will show as game.exe but will try run as a visual basic script - ensure this isn't the case)

If it isn't a double extension, then it's safe to move on...

Right-click the file and select 'Troubleshoot compatiblity', this will run it under compatiblity mode but try auto-pick one for you. If it works, run the game then follow the instructions to KEEP those settings. If not, cancel.

If it is a 16bit Application, you can not run it on a 64 bit OS. There is no way around this.

If the application is CORRUPTED, it might not be detected as a valid Win32 Application and run as a EXE. You will need to re-download the application.

Solve : Benchmarking FF14?

Answer»

Hey all, new here for the most part. I was just curious about a few things;

I'm looking into getting a new desktop computer so that I can play FF14 without many PROBLEMS (Currently I'm using and XPS m1710 Dual Core, 2GB Ram, GeForce 7950GTX video 512MB and as far as I know will not clear the specs for the game).

The PC that I'm looking at is Over the Counter, but slotted with a nice NVIDIA card and just wanted some input on whether or not it would work or turn out well or be worth it for that matter.

I was looking at the:

Acer Aspire AMD Athlon II X4 635 Quad-Core Computer
http://www.futureshop.ca/en-CA/product/acer-acer-aspire-amd-athlon-ii-x4-635-quad-core-computer-am3400-e2212-am3400-e2212/10145432.aspx?path=c039b45f0e1de22410c1852dc2b0b9dfen02

with the GeForce GTX 480 video card slotted into it

It would be great to know if this would work at all, I'd like to get into 14 as soon as I can with a computer that will benchmark it above 3000.

==If this is not going to work I would love to hear from anyone about a good configuration on a OtC machine with a decent Card slotted into it for under $1000 or soAs the the Quad Core, I suggest instead just EITHER going for a high spec faster GHz Duo-Core (less cost for more performance - unless using a lot of multi-core enabled apps/games) or going for the latest, faster but more expensive i7 Core (if your motherboard can support it). There are very few games yet that make any real use of multiple cores and in those few cases still don't use it very well (Crysis is an awesome exception for this - multi-core and Nvidia support). Consoles don't have this threading and would require major coding overhaul to port FF14 to make use of more than two cores. Duo Core uses one for OS and one for App at all times at least.  If you do get Quad, make sure it's 3GHz+ to make it worth it. i7 Core is different technology which removes a lot of bottleneck, but you might need a new motherboard, etc.

2GB Ram is rarely enough, it's survives but your'll notice a couple more gbs makes a performance difference, you should look into adding some more (4GB or 6GB should be good - make sure it's compatible with your old memory if mixing), specially if using Microsoft's 'memory hog' OS! Vista would gobble all that up and leave barely any for your game.

FF14 Min System Requirements are as follows:

Operating System
Windows® XP SP3
Windows® Vista(32-bit / 64-bit)SP2
Windows® 7(32-bit / 64-bit
CPU
Intel® Core 2TM Duo (2.0 GHz)
AMD AthlonTM X2 (2.0 GHz)
RAM
Windows® XP: 1.5 GB or higher
Windows® Vista / Windows® 7: 2 GB or higher
HDD/SSD Space
Installing: 15 GB or more
Downloading: Space on the hard drive where My Documents is located should be 6GB or more
Graphics Card
512MB NVIDIA® GeForce® 9600 series or higher
512MB ATI RadeonTM HD 2900 Series or higher
Sound Card
DirectSound® compatible sound card (DirectX® 9.0 or higher)
Internet Connection
Broadband Internet connection or higher
Screen Resolution
1280 x 720 or higher; 32-bit
DirectX
DirectX® 9.0c
Others
Mouse, Keyboard, Gamepad

As far as they go - graphic card is the only limit.

The GeForce GTX 480 is a sweet hardcore gaming graphic card, just make sure it fits, has two power cables,
very power hungry so make sure your power supply (PSU) is at least 550W+. Then your'll be lag FREE - high quality gaming in no time!

Happy gaming!

Solve : Geforce 260gtx vs Geforce 460gtx.. Should I upgrade??

Answer»

Hi, I currently have a geforce 260gtx and was LOOKING to upgrade to a geforce 460gtx. The PROBLEM is that I am not sure how much gain I will get performance wise and if it's really worth upgrading. Could SOMEONE give me some idea what types of gains I WOULD get and if it's worth me upgrading. Thankyou!! The GTX460 is ROUGHLY equivalent to the GTX280, but uses less power and runs cooler.  I made that change myself, from a 280 to a 460, and it was deifnitely worth it for me as the 280 ran quite warm and sucked down the juice.
Compared to the 260 it's a nice jump in performance and should still use a little less power.
It really depends what your priorities are, how much the jump would cost you, etc - for me, my 460 cost less than I sold my 280 for so it was a no-brainer.Thanks for the advice Calum. You're welcome

Solve : The Best Firewall & Virus programs for games??

Answer»

Hi, I have windows 7 64bit, I play a LOT of games and I am just wondering what firewall and virus program to use? I don't want PROGRAMS that are going to impact my games, like bugging me everytime there is a threat or that keeps popping up and closing my game. Thankyou!!
Kaspersky 2011

I overall recommend Kaspersky Internet Security 2011 to be one of the best virus scanners / firewalls / application control / script control / anti-spam / system watch / vulnerability check / anti-adware / etc. It will pop up warnings to start off with (registry ACCESS, protected areas, installs, malious or danagerous actions) and when anything changes/updates (including not even trusting itself), but that's what I like about it. You normally deal with it once and then it's either trusted or blocked.

However, it does have a 'Gamers Profile' you can turn on so it won't hassle you if you don't want (like in game).

Enable Gamers Profile:
Start > All Programs > Kaspersky Internet Security 2011 > Kaspersky Internet Security 2011.
Settings > Advance Settings (Box) > Gaming Profile > Use Gaming Profile > Select Action Automatically.

NOD 32

Nod 32 is powerful virus protection, can detect a lot more, but misses out on some of the other areas.

Disable most popups:
Start > All Programs > ESET > ESET Smart Security or ESET NOD32 Antivirus.
Press the F5 key to display the Advanced Setup window.
From the Advanced Setup tree, click User interface > Alerts and notifications.
Select the Display only notifications requiring user intervention option and click OK to SAVE the changes.

I don't recommend Norton or Mcafee, but if you do like Norton, get the 'lighter' gamers edition version. Thanks man.

Answer» OKAY, so I'm playing the Sims, and I just created an furnished a brand new house which took me forever. I have this random guy living in there, but what I want to do, is i want to create a new family and put them in there instead. WITH all the furniture and everything.

If I evict the guy in there now, will he take all the furniture with him so that if I try to move a new family in there I'll have to refurnish it all?
If so, is there any way I can make this not happen?

HELP,.GET the families to marry/move in together, then while the DESIRED family is in, they will live in the house WITH the guy and his furniture.

Now for the sad part, make a room with 1x1 tiles, close it in (duh), kill him!!!

Now for the fun part... See how many times and in how many CREATIVE ways you can kill him!
Theres the drowning one, fire, boredom, ECT ect.

Evicting him will take all the stuff away. Do what Tien SAID and just kill him off.

Solve : Just found this.....?

Answer»

10 reasons NOTto but PS3:

1. No Live! In fact, sony came out and recently announced that they're not even going to bother to build an answer to Xbox Live.

Sony, you can keep your ability to plug in 7 controllers. I'll take being able to play with 63 other players on live in a fps over 7 controllers any day of the week.

2. The 36.5 megabits per second blu ray drive that Sony is squeezing into the PS3.

The BD-Rom drive that's going to be used in the PS3 has a speed of 36.5 MBits per second. 36.5megaBITS per second, not megaBYTES. 8bits=1byte=4.5megaBYTES per second. http://www.blu-ray.com/faq/

This is because the technology for the drives will still be in it's infancy when the ps3 is being launched.

That means in order to fill the 256MB cache (to load a decent sized race on GT4 let's say) will take about 56 seconds of waiting.

To fill the same 256MB cache on the xbox 360's 12x DVD drive read at 15.75MB/s (megabytes) = 15 seconds

I know you know your math.

If you want an idea of how long a minute is, try staring at a clock for a minute and see how bored you get.

I'm not going to stand for huge loading times next gen as well. Long load times are meant to be a thing of the past. But Sony is making sure that's not the case by insisting on using Blu Ray drives when the technology (and their read speeds) are still so early.

On top of this, Playstation 3 Blu Ray drive will cost Gamers $100+ per console. http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=25901

And within 1 year, once blu-ray movies actually start coming out, the same $100 would probably buy you a far faster 4x or 8x blu-ray player that functions a lot better (compare watching dvds on a standalone player vs. on the ORIGINAL ps2). And do you really think that, if blu-ray does come out on top, that the 360 won't release with a version that can play bluray versions as well? Legally, as long as MS pays the same small fees that other blu ray player manufacterers pay to use sony's tech, Sony can't STOP MS from putting blu ray drives in their 360s. And by then, the drives will likely be a lot cheaper, and a lot faster than the once found on the launch PS3s.

3. Opting for 8 USB ports and multiple memory card readers over a HDD.

There's no reason to put in like 8 usb ports and all these freaking memory card reader and all these other ports that no one wants. We can buy a memory card adapter if we want.

We don't need 3 ethernet ports, one will be more than plenty. JUST INCLUDE 4 USB 2.O PORTS, 1 ETHERNET PORT, SUPPORT FOR SONY MEMORY STICK DUOS (since that's what psp uses and that's what makes Sony the most money) AND THE STUFF TO CONNECT TO ANALOG AND HDTVS.

USE THE MANUFACTURING COSTS YOU SAVE TO THROW IN A CHEAP 5GB HDD so developers can make games like Blinx or FFXI or use the HDD to reduce load times and stuff.

IF A SMALL HDD IS INCLUDED IN EVERY SYSTEM, EVERY DEVELOPER WILL USE IT TO REDUCE LOAD TIMES. Don't you guys want developers to use the hdd to reduce loadtimes, to make games like FFXI that require a HDD? wouldn't that be better than a bunch of useless ports that no one will use that you can just buy an adapter for if you really need?

SELL THE ADAPTER TO CONNECT OLD PS2 AND PS1 GAMES SEPERATELY FOR LIKE $10 AND YOU'LL MAKE ENOUGH TO COMPENSATE FOR THE HDD. Once we transfer all our old saves over to the HDD, we can just sell it on ebay or something and it's one less ugly port we have to look at.

HDD = Custom soundtracks, downloadable content, FFXI style mmorpgs, faster load times.

Multiple seperate Memory Card Readers Built in = Worthless

4. Sony disabling the ability to have LAN parties (without getting wired controllers) by insisting on using bluetooth controllers over Infrared ones.

"Bain admitted that the wireless signal could be interfered with by another nearby PlayStation 3 console and in those instances where many consoles would be close by, such as at a LAN party, it would be necessary to default to using wired controllers"

5. The Cell.

Not only is the cell processor going to jack up the price of the PS3 quite a bit. It's greatly bottlenecked by the 512 MBs of L2 Cache (the 360 has twice that much L2 Cache).

For all the hype about the cell. Guess what, the processor means jack when it comes to gaming. 3 3.2 ghz cores vs. 1 3.2 ghz core and 7 PPEs mean nothing. What matters for gaming is the GPU. And most reports (anandtech etc.) state that the 360's graphics card is almost a generation more advanced. This makes sense, ATI built the card from the ground up with technology that won't make it's way into PC cards for atleast an year or so. The NVIDEA card in the PS3 is identical to the card as what'll be available for the PC in a month or two. The only thing that the cpu will actually matter for is the AI. And AI is more depenedent on L2 cache (this is what ultimately determines the number of simultanous algorithms you can run at any one time) than on processing speed. And guess what, the 360's has twice the L2 cache of the PS3's Cell!

6. No requirement to make developers use 720p.

People make the ps3s 1080i sound like it's going to be standard. All that sony said was the the PS3 supports aka. can theoretically output 1080i.

Guess what, the original xbox "supports" 720p (identical to how the ps3 will "support" 1080i).

Want to guess how many xbox games actually came out offering 720p? I'll give you one guess.

The rest of the post from above

7. Accessible cost

Blu-ray wont be cheap! Cell won't be cheap! Odds are, when the PS3 finally does come out, MS will lower the price a bit and the PS3 will cost a small fortune by comparison. The discs cost a small fortune to manufacture, don't expect games under $70 atleast for an year or so, and if then you consider the development costs who knows!

8.The Games.

Well this one is kind of a toss up. The Xbox 360's Kameo, Enchant Arm, Perfect Dark (drool), RE5, Gears of War, Blue Dragon, Oblivion, FPS, Racers (Forza, PGR), DoA etc. vs. GTA 4 and whatever sequels Sony has planned. What is true is the the 360s gaming library will get a one year headstart, and the PS3's will probably take a long time to catch up, if ever.

9. The Design.

Well this is personal opinion too. But who came with the brilliant idea to model it after a building anyways? Fire them and make it look next gen. My old Atari Jaguar looks less crappy. YOU CALL THAT A NEXT GEN DESIGN!? There is really no symmetry to it at all. Put the drive in the middle, get rid of the weird ridges and make it actually look smooth in the front and back and well. Then you have a nextgen looking consoles.

IT REALLY WOULDN'T TAKE MANY ALTERATIONS TO MAKE THE CONSOLE LOOK AWESOME, GET RID OF THE RIDGES SO ITS LOOKS PERFECTLY SMOOTH ON THE FRONT AND THE BACK, MOVE THE CD TRAY TO THE MIDDLE TO MAKE THE CONSOLE SYMMETRICAL. IT WOULD LOOK AWESOME.

10. Developer *censored*.

No one has any experience working with the Cell. 7 PPEs, seriously, you think any developer is going to have any idea how to utilize them? Just making a game that uses dual processors takes a 50% larger budget. Meanwhile, developers are already raving about how much easier Microsoft's standards and XNA development kits are making it to develop 360 games. And it's a heck of a lot cheaper to manufacture the discs too. Even small developers with just $100,000 can make their own game and sell it via Xbox Live marketplace.

And as already mentioned the L2 cache of the PS3's cell in miniscule. Most PC processors and the 360's processor have twice the cache. To make a processor with half the cache and expect it to be shared among 7 PPEs is just asking for developers to curse Sony day and night.

On top of all this, by the time the PS3 launches, developers will have had loads of experience of utilizing the 360. Expect the 2nd generation 360 games using much smaller budgets to blow the first generation PS3 games out of the water graphically.
These are also 10 good reasons to just stick to PC/Xbox games. Good find. ThanxI don't think you should be bashing it before it even comes out, and some of those points are just misleading..

"On top of this, Playstation 3 Blu Ray drive will cost Gamers $100+ per console."

This really depends on how the HD DVD VS. Blu Ray war turns out, as the winner gets the benefit of costs (and passes it down to consumers, thus making that cost down to maybe about the cost of a DVD RW+ drive these days.. 25 dollars)

"9. The Design."
"8.The Games."

These are entirely up to taste..

"7. Accessible cost"

This is actually true however.. as they wasted tons of money for revamping some of the GPU's architecture due to heat.

I'd still stick to PC however, as it is much better then consoles IMO.. I play FPS's mainly so the mouse just seems better, although some consolers are really good with the pad

You say that they are using bluetooth controllers instead of Infared, well thats a GOOD thing, infared is unreliable, and you have to practicaly stand right next to the object you are communicating to to let it work. Not true, My brother got me a $30 wireless controller for my ps2 on christmas, i still use it from across the room

this all just proves, the pc is the best Quote

Solve : Improving Preformance?

Answer»

lol i know how you feel! I had to TRY to enjoy sims 2 when i only had my old computer, when i finally understood to get a video card, i found out something which would shock everyone forever! My motherboard does not support AGP OR EVEN PCI EXPRESS! Only a cursed PCI! And they dont make those anymore! I was practically crying... That was because i just bought HL2 and was unable to play... yeah im a HL fan too.

Later my sister bought a computer BUT... it was just for her work, i then installed sims 2 into her com and found out her com specs which was a miserable 128MB of RAM and 2.8 processing power with no graphic card could'nt run sims 2...

I felt like banging my head on the wall. But now i am able to enjoy all my games with my "home made" computer lol.

And just to think all this for a game???...OK, now that I know I can install any PCI video card from Nvidia (Geforce card) or ATI (Radeon card) in my computer, I need some help.
Which card should I get?
I will post some requirements.
I am looking for something under $70.00 that will run the game well.

Quote

Minimum System Requirements for The Sims 2

If you have a T&L capable video card with at least 32 MB of video RAM then you need at least:
800 MHz processor or better
256 MB RAM if Windows XP, Windows ME, Windows 98 or Windows 2000
At least 3.5 GB of hard drive space
If you have a non-T&L capable video card (an Intel Extreme Graphics or a Radeon 7000/VE Series) then you need at least:
2.0 GHz processor or better
256 MB RAM if Windows XP, Windows ME, Windows 98, or Windows 2000
At least 3.5 GB of hard drive space
Get the most current driver for your video card. The manufacturers usually have the video drivers on their sites for you to download. Visit the nVidia site, the ATI site or the support site for your computer's manufacturer for the latest drivers for those video cards.

Supported video cards (and the more video memory the better):

ATI RadeonTM series (7000 or better)
Radeon 7000/VE series (non-T&L; requires 2.0 GHz processor)
7200, 7500
8500, All-In-Wonder 8500
9000, 9200, 9500, 9600, 9700, 9800
X300, X600, X800

Nvidia® QuadroTM series
Quadro, Quadro2, Quadro4

Nvidia® Geforce series (GeForce2 and better)
GeForce2
GeForce3, 3 Ti
GeForce4, 4Ti, MX 420, 440
GeForce FX 5200, 5600, 5700, 5800, 5900, 5950
GeForce 6600, 6800

Intel® Extreme Graphics (non-T&L; requires 2.0 GHz processor)
82845, 82865, 82915

From the following: http://thesims2.ea.com/help/detail.php?help_id=21hmm im not SURE about this but i would recommand you that at least try to get a video card which allows you to,

1) Play at high graphics
2) Without much game lag
3) And maybe a video card that can last long? In that sense is able to play certain games of today. ( Point 3 may cost the video card to cost more than $70. )

This is in my opinion but since your in a budget you should get a expert to decide, im only advising on the part of gameplay.I'll ASK people on the www.thesims2.com forum.
cheeseycase, are you on the Sims 2 or Sims 1 forum?
Im zylstra555 on TS2
and zylstra5 on TS1PCI Express: http://www.compusa.com/products/product_info.asp?product_code=332176&pfp=BROWSE

Standard PCI: http://www.compusa.com/products/product_info.asp?product_code=50723460&pfp=BROWSE or http://www.compusa.com/products/product_info.asp?product_code=50543098&pfp=BROWSE ...

FlameWOAH! Something a LITTLE bit cheaper.
Thanks anyways
I think I will ask my UNCLE or my Brother or my Cousins half-brother if they have any extra stuff.Hmm but you do have to spend abit to enjoy more, how about investing in a good video card? So that in the near future you are able to enjoy more games besides the sims. Because other games would require a high video card than what the sims require.Reducing the 60 or so Processes running in the background should help too. The only problem is that I do not know which processes can be terminated.
Some of them are needed to run Windows XP, so they cannot be shut down.

Solve : SIMS Marriage?

Answer»

I think you can give them as gifts. I'm pretty SURE. What expansion packs do you have? If you have makin' MAGIC, this will be easy.

FlameAll up to Vacation/on holiday... makin' magic and super star looked a bit... well... lame... although I might get 'em cheap and try them out, don't know until you try I GUESS. Thanks againHm. I'm not sure what you are able to make then. Don't remember.

FlameHmm preservatives, i believed you can make these in Unleashed, lol im a insane Sim fan, GOT every Sim game!

Even the sims 2 and even sim cities!

And yea you can make gnomes and give them out as gifts but you dont need wood just the work bench. And in making magic these guys can come alive and help out in the garden just like a gardener and without pay. lol

Err in making social interaction, i believe in the first 2 expansion of the sims, its very easy to make social interaction to become 100 and marriage, but when comes to hot date and the others it can be abit diffcult, as it introduces a new social "upgrade".

An example would be compared to the expansions before hot date, you can continue to interact with the other sim as many times as you want BUT, when you have hot date, if you keep talking to other sim he would not want to talk to you.

Another example would be new interests, if your sim has the similiar interest as another sim, they would communicate easier, its just like real LIFE but... simmier...

Hmm just asking ChrisSim, why do you think makin magic and superstar looked lame? Lol just asking.

Solve : Video Card For WoW (World of Warcraft)?

Answer»

Hi all,

Just wondering if my video card is accepted in WoW. When I play the graphincs look quite DISTORTED unlike when i play at my friends, if it is not accepted or is just not a GREAT video card, could u suggest one??? I have a RADION 7000 made by ATI graphics!

Thanks,
Adam I found this from Blizzard Support. Here is a list of supported video cards: http://www.blizzard.com/support/wow/?id=aww0830p ... According to that list, your graphics card is NOT SUPPORTED , so this is why your game is having issues. If you aren't afraid of change, I would consider upgrading your video card to one that is on the list.

FlameIm afraid ur card does not MEET the minimum requirements but GETTING one that does can be cheap, or u could invest and get a good one to run new games..Get a 6600gt, or a 6800gs if your AGP.. It will let you run on med-high settings.I think we've been abandoned lol

Okay, so I'm trying to run C&C: Yuri's Revenge, but I keep getting an error prompt as soon as the screen GOES black to run the program. Red Alert 2 works perfectly, but YR won't. I can give you error prompt info and such, but I didn't know if it would have system info on it. What irks me is that it worked on my old crappy Windows 98 computer, but won't on my XP one. Any help you guys got would be gratefully accepted. What are the system requirements, and what are your system specs? Are there any PATCHES online available for you? Have you tried running the game in compatibility mode?

FlameUmmmm.... compatibility mode? How does that work? I should MEET the system requirements, because my old system ran it, and it was worse than this one.Note that you can only use compatibility mode on a Windows XP computer... If you have Windows XP, see this link: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/winxppro/maintain/apcompatmode.mspx ...

FlameYeah, I searched for it and figured out how to use it and got the game working. Thank you very much for the help. What did you do to fix it?

Solve : The Sims Complete Collection HELP!?

Answer»

A few days ago I had The Sims: Deluxe Edition installed on my computer. It had always worked perfect. THen, every time I would TRY to start the game it would crash right after the banner thing. I tried it several times and it would NEVER load the game. So I decided to uninstall it. I did, but then could not get it to install again. It would get to 25% every time and freeze. So I quit trying and put it away.

Yesterday I bought The Sims Complete Collection. It installed successfully, so I figured it would work fine after the installation. I was wrong. I have not been able to play it yet, it does the same thing the first game did. I open the game, the banner runs, it acts like the game is about to load and a black screen comes up then it closes out completely and takes me back to my desktop.

I am sooo irritated over this! Oh, I have XP by the way. Here's what EA has to say about it: http://support.ea.com/cgi-bin/ea.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=8516&p_created=1102388329&p_sid=*qK*vl5i&p_lva=&p_sp=cF9zcmNoPTEmcF9zb3J0X2J5PSZwX2dyaWRzb3J0PSZwX3Jvd19jbnQ9ODEmcF9wcm9kcz03LDcwMyZwX2NhdHM9NTY2LDcxMCZwX3B2PTIuNzAzJnBfY3Y9Mi43MTAmcF9zZWFyY2hfdHlwZT1hbnN3ZXJzLnNlYXJjaF9ubCZwX3BhZ2U9MQ**&p_li=&p_topview=1 ... http://support.ea.com/cgi-bin/ea.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=8566&p_created=1102700301&p_sid=*qK*vl5i&p_lva=&p_sp=cF9zcmNoPTEmcF9zb3J0X2J5PSZwX2dyaWRzb3J0PSZwX3Jvd19jbnQ9ODEmcF9wcm9kcz03LDcwMyZwX2NhdHM9NTY2LDcxMCZwX3B2PTIuNzAzJnBfY3Y9Mi43MTAmcF9zZWFyY2hfdHlwZT1hbnN3ZXJzLnNlYXJjaF9ubCZwX3BhZ2U9MQ**&p_li=&p_topview=1 ...

Sorry for the long links by the way.

FlameI'm sorry I forgot to mention that I had already been to the EA site...nothing I've found has worked. Or MAYBE I'm just not doing it right? I don't know....thanks for the help so far though.I don't know if you need this? But if so, or if not, here it is

Hi,

I have just tryed LOADING The Sims Deluxe Edition on my new computer, my PREVIOUS computer ran on 98 and the program ran beautifully, now I tyred loading it onto my new computer running on XP and the instillation went fine until it prompted me to insert the second disk. From there it ran again for about another minute or so and then stopped at 95% an error message was displayed reading....COMPONENT TRANSFER ERROR. the instillation program then terminated.

I have checked all the requirements and i have them all.

I have also tryed cleaning the disks, running the Program COmpatibility Wizard and reloading the disks.

I really LOVE this game and want to play ASAP, PLEASE HELP ME!!!!

THANKS ADAM!!!This is what I found on EA Games:

A 'Component Transfer Error' this early in the installation means that there is either an incomplete uninstall or a corrupt previous installation of the game. To resolve this issue, you will need to completely remove the game from your system and then reinstall it.

FlameThanks for the help unfortunately it did not work, and again stopped at 95% when loading C:\...\The Sims\SoundData\SoundData.far even when i deleted all the Sims Info.

Im really mad that this is not working

Anways thanks for the help,

AdamTry this ALONG with the other steps in the link I gave you. Click on Start -> All programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> Disk Defragmenter. Run a defrag AFTER you have followed all the other steps in the link. This might work. If not I've got one more Ace up my sleeve

FlameTryed again,

Didnt Work...thanks for the help and lookin for that magical ace,

AdamThe magical ace is a reformat!

What did you learn from the manufacturer's web site?Manufacturer says to deal with the registry. Just got IMed, and it hasn't worked. I told the visitor to DOWNLOAD a utility called the sims eraser. We will now await a reply.

FlameOk, we ran Remote Assistance. My conclusion is that the CD must have a scratch on it. Must be just deep enough, and in just the right spot so it can't read the file. The viewer will be calling EA Games tomorrow.

Solve : Automatically aims down?

Answer»

Good day.

I have a problem with aiming in Unreal Tournament '99 GOTY v4.36.
When I start any game the aim automatically auto-aims to the floor. It doesn't let me aim.

I have tried the following with no positive result:

-update to latest (4.36)
-try all different drivers (d3d, openGL, software rendering, 3dfx glide)
-clean cache
-get latest drivers
-configure all possible mouse options

Does this game depend on the registry to work well?
I have just copied the game files/folders into my new drive. I didn't install the game. The reason is I didn't have SPACE on c:\ and used a virtual machine to use c:\.

Thanks for your attention.

TrevalThis may be the problem. If you can get space, try installing it. Don't you need hard drive space to install a virtual machine? Yup you do.

My virtual machine was 15 GB, w2k3 server and is on F:, not C:
(I have 6 virtual machines on F:)
My PC partitions:

C:\ (windows xp pro with SP2) 6GB
D:\ personal data
F:\ external USB 2.0 harddisk (includes my virtual machines) 149 GB
Here's a BETTER picture:
http://www.valter.be/images/partition8.GIF

SP2 REALLY souped up my 6 GB . Already I cleaned out
%DocumentsAndSettings%\me\temp\ and temporary internet files\.
I have partition MANAGER 8.0 though.
I have very little programs installed in C:\ (windows installation defaults + 1 or 2 custom)
Perhaps I should make my C:\ bigger, but only max. 7 GB.
I think that wouldn't be enough for Unreal, a poor 1 GB extra.
If you have any suggestions on how to make my C:\ a lot bigger than 6 GB?

Or other suggestions about my original problem...

Thanks for your attention.

Treval

May I suggest backing up save games, and installing the game on F, no virtual machine? Looks like you have a TON of free space there. And it wouldn't hurt to have it in Registry EITHER. Problem solved. Copied the game to F:, mimiced the registry settings of the virtual machine (I had installed Unreal there), and rebooted. I think the reboot did it really.

Regards,

Treval
Wait - you didn't reboot after you pseudo-installed the game? That might be it...

Solve : FPS Co-op?

Answer»

Does anyone KNOW of any good FPS Co-OP GAMES. (Modern)BF series you can play Co op over lan with others, there's a mod for FEAR that is in the works for co op, the same with Doom 3, but the Doom 3 one is actually done and not in beta. The upcoming game STALKER will feauture this I think, and it will be a free roaming game too, which would be great for co op.

Solve : The Sims and the 3 pack expansion?

Answer»

I've had the deluxe sims on my pc for a long TIME now. I just bought the 3 pack expansion of Unleashed, Superstar and houseparty. After I installed all 3 expansion packs the game is running slow and if I go into the 800X600 mode it has alot of small lines on the screen :-?. I installed the expansion packs in the same order that the instructions stated. First House party then unleashed and last superstar. I use the super star disk 1 to play as stated in the instructions. All my sim games are FACTORY software they are not copied or bootlegged. Any help or SUGGESTIONS is greatly apprciated.

Thank you
DUSTWEBWhat are your computer's specs? RAM? Processor speed? Does your system meet the game's requirements?

FlameI have 512mg ram running windows media xp i have over 150 gigs on my hard drive and My processor is a AMD Athlon 64 3500 2.20ghz

ThanksAre you running any programs while playing? Instant messengers, etc.? When did this start? Have you made any changes to your system recently?

FlameThese small lines you speak of are probably "artifacts", which is a result of a faulty video card.
The video card itself is not broken, just that it might be overclocked, underclocked, or not enough GPU memory allocated to the card. I think your problem is the 3rd one I stated.

Go to start -> run -> type in "Dxdiag"

Go to the "DISPLAY" tab and type the card name and total memory down here.Flame....I have been using the Sims Deluxe for a long time on my pc I just bought the vol 1 expan pak and when I installed it I started having this problem.

ThanksTN2Cool - Did you want to know the card i have on my pc? I am not sure I get what you are saying...if I do this is there something i can adjust?
Thanks
Yes, Tien wants your video card information. In the Display tab, on the top-left, it tells you what type of card you have, and how much memory is installed on it.

FlameOk thanks....

The device is: ATI Radeon XPRESS 200 Series
Total memory is 256.0mb

Hope this is correct.

ThanksThat looks right... Your card meets the requirements for sure... Please give us some time to think of a possible solution. We'll get BACK with you

FlameGreat....thank you for all the help and assistance. It is greatly appriciated While we ponder a solution, you might try contacting EA Games as well. They might know something we don't

FlameYeah, your card seems to be an integrated card and should be able to play it.

I actually have no idea what the problem is, you should contact EA, or dish out some money on Newegg for another card.

Solve : !! ping?

Answer»

Hey, i play counter-strike 1.6. i was wondering how i could GET my PING down. i exit outta all tha running programs and have spyware and virus protectors and do disable them when i play. I have dsl, so my speed is fine. i have enough ram, like 500 and something. ive done windows updates. my video card is called nvidia riva tnt2 model 64/model 65 pro (ms corp). i was wondering if tha sound card could be tha reason my ping is high. the graphics for cs 1.6 are not that good so it doesnt NEED like a high dollar video card. can anyone think of ANYTHING i could do to lower my ping? Here mate i also play Cs Cz. I find i get lots of lag if i join servers outside of europe ( i live in U.K ). Try JOING servers inside your own countries or servers with a very low ping. 60 or lower would be good, going any further is just asking for lag tbh.Is that a 16 meg video card?

Any other Ideas?? Personal favourite of mine, although I don't know if it's the best, however it's my favourite is Final Fantasy 3. I loved this game and have played it many times over. Like I said probably not the best ever but a personal favourite.I never played either of them lol
FlameI'm installing Oblivion RIGHT now! Lucky you Wraith.. What are your specs??

And Flames.. *censored* man?? You should get that game.. you can play it on Med-High with your set up and I'm sure you'll love it..I must agree with TN2COOL, you really need to play some of those games Flame.
Wraith, you lucky son of a (beep)...lol. but, is it possible for you to Zip it and send it over to me??(pretty please with sugar, sprinkles and a cherry on top? :-/....lol)Quote

Lucky you Wraith.. What are your specs??
Specs are in my signature. My video card is a ATI x300, not very good, but I already ordered another.
Currently I'm playing it on low with no problems, but I hope my new card is good enough.

Good thing I convinced my DAD to get a DVD drive when we bought our computer or else I couldn't play it. My current card is a ATI x300 series 128 MB of memory, and the one I bought was "Radeon® X1600 PRO 512MB PCI Express".I hope it was a good purchase. :-/Woah.. that thing eats watts like crazy.. did you check to see if your PSU is enough?
(If not your motherboard can fail horribly)Can you vote for "none of the above"?If you don't MIND the geekiness... I vote Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. Quote

Fair enough. It's very in-depth as far as Star Wars games go, but I know it can't compare with others out there. Still, that's my vote because I play it and enjoy it. Yeah Wraith, it'd be smart to check your PSU, 430W should do it.

Solve : need help with shady download?

Answer»

If you are opposed to so called 'piracy', leave now. I am not a major pirate. I only download a few games and all of those games are very old. I NEVER download new games.

Now to the subject at hand. For a long time I have wanted Diablo 2. I have been hooked to it since i downloaded the demo. I am absolutly bankrupt. I used Morpheus, a P2P, and downloaded the Diablo discs in .iso format. These CD images worked as far as the first disc. I used Nero to burn the image to a CD-R. The installer worked fine, however when I tried to use the play CD, the launch menu would COME up but a message would come up saying please insert disc. Then I downloaded DAEMON tools, a virtual driver that can emulate copy right protection. After I expiremented with it, I finally got it to get past the insert disc message. However the screen would go black as if the game was launching, then would go back to the desktop. It would start up then immediatly shut down. From my reasoning it must be the download, but I think that I am wrong.

Has anyone else gotten past something like this? Any ideas?

I also do not want to see any posts saying that PIRACY IS WRONG or GO BUY THE GAME. This is for technical help only.Look, that is not an old game, its very alive and well, I would only support downloads of games that are freeware or abandonware. Well anyways, even if you get past whatever your problem is, you will never play and enjoy the great feauture of the game, Battle Net. They've PUT in lots of safeguards and stuff agaisnt cheap people like you, so just go buy the game..

You say your not "a major pirate". So if I come into your house and I steal your computer, but not your monitor, I guess it's ok then by your reasoning.. Once again, do you not read the guidlines. NO POSTS ON PIRACY.

p.s- I already know how to get into battle net.Forum rules prevent helping with piracy issues. Have a nice day. PIRACY IS WRONG - GO BUY THE GAMEFYI: $30 is not a big deal.
Yeah, I looked it up. It's $25 on Amazon.

You do realize that by law, we are required to report you if possible. However, I don't have the information required.Quote

Well from what specs you said the computer had, they match up fine against the system requirements for the game so it probably wont low specs that are the problem.
Try scaning your computer for VIRUSES and spyware.
Click start -> run. type chkdsk /f type Y to the question telling you it cant unmount the drive and that it will check the disk on restart. Restart your computer.
Once your computer loads to the desktop again it will of finished checking the hard drive for errors so now you can run Disk Defragmenter. Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> Disk Defragmenter

After you have done all these things, run the game and let us know how it does. It's obviously your video card.. enough said..

Solve : Semi old games freezing HELP!!!?

Answer»

Ok, I have a few kinda older games that I play. Painkiller, battlefront 2, path of neo are the games that I have that are freezing up. Now, I have just upgraded. EVERYTHING went well I haven't had any other problems. I can play any new game out no problem. I have quake 4, DOOM 3, and F.E.A.R. All run flawlessly. But everytime I play Path of Neo or Painkiller it freezes up for about 30 secs. and I get the sound skiping thing. I have done everything I know to do up and down graded drivers, bought dual channel ram. put in fans out the you know what and, even uninstalled and took out my sound card. I have no anti virus programs running when I play games. Nothing I do seems to help. I thought it was my cpu overheating so I've ordered a new and better heatsink and fan. But, I don't think thats the problem anymore as my cpu never gets above 60c. My specs are below. Any Thoughts WOULD be great!!!

I have
600w psu
AMD 3500+
2 Gigs of dual channel ram
EVGA 939 sli mobo
evga 7800gt
sound blaster live! 24 bit
200 gig western digital hd with 8 mb cache ide - ata

Which operating system are you using? Are the games compatible with this operating system?

FlameYeah, it's Windows XP ProAre the games compatible with XP? Are there any game patches online?

Flameyeah I've updated all the patches that are out now.How old are these games? What were the recommended sytem requirements when realeased? Do you just have too much horsepower?painkiller is windows 98 and above, 2.2GHz 512 ram geforce 5700 or better.
Path of neo is windows xp 1.8 Ghz 512 ram geforce 5200 or better
Battlefront 2 is windows xp Amd 1500+ 256 ram geforce 6 & 7 onlyIt's your graphics card.. if its OC'ed, tune it down in system bios because that card wasn't meant to be used to play low end games, it has DX9, and all the new features in the G7 line. You can tune down your card and turn of the SETTINGS by using the software u installed with the card, its like a 50mb folder full of options..

BTW.. if u got that card, why not just play better games??the card is stock as the rest of my system, never and will never be overclocked.
And the reason is that I have beat all my newer games. I'm just trying to play the ones I haven't beat.
I'll try underclocking tho and post back when I can! Thanks for the Idea

BTW Mannard rocks!

The card was overclocked by EVGA not me. So, I underclocked it . So far so good! Thanks

Solve : Myst V: End Of Ages problem?

Answer»

I've got a 2.51 Ghz Dell 8200 with Windows XP Home Edition, and I have service pack 2. I'm having problems with Myst V: End Of Ages. The sound card I'm using is a Turtle Beach SantaCruz. Our computer also has 512 megabytes of RAM. Now, here's the issue. The game doesn't crash, and I get sound, but I've got some game performance problems. If I set the game's video settings to the maximum, the game's video slows down and gets choppy. If I have the sound acceleration on full, crackling noises can be heard when any of the main characters in the game are talking, which MAKES some segments of their speech hard to make out, if I set the sound mode on hardware, Yeesha's journal voice is too LOW in volume. And if I set the speakers on 5.1 surround sound, I hear nothing COMING out of the characters. Should I upgrade the RAM to 1024 megabytes for the video? Should I look for a better sound card to fix the sound problems? I'd like to improve the performance of the game. Even re-installing directX, re-installing the game, updating the game, nothing WORKS to fix the sound issue. What kind of video card are you using? Also, I would say that it is a good idea to upgrade your RAM to 1 gig. Especially for gaming. It sounds like your video issues with choppyness are due to low RAM. Add more to fix that. As far as sound, try updating your drivers and looking for game patches.

FlameI've got an ATI Radeon 9800Pro. I've tried updating the game, but the game doesn't have any new updates available. All I can get is the version on the game DVD. I've LOOKED for a patch and can't find one myself, and I couldn't even find one on Ubisoft's or Cyan's sites. Can you do it, Flame? I've tried updating the sound card drivers, but when I do that, the sound doesn't work. Should I replace the sound card with a Sound Blaster Audigy 4? I think that sound card is way better.Try it. If you like that card more why not use that in the first place?

Flame
