I managed to get ACES of the Deep installed just fine, but when I try to play it an error message pops up saying that the program is not a valid WIN32 application. I looked through the Q&A section but didn't find nothing about it.

Does anybody have any suggestions.

You are most likely running Windows XP and Windows XP does not support most older (DOS based) games.Try compatability mode if on XP?

I have the Knight Rider 2 Demo from Davilex. Every time I play the game, it randomly crashes to the desktop. I would post the Winows Error Reporting message that popped up, but there's no WAY to copy and paste the TEXT. I did, however, find this in the game directory in a file named errorapplication.log:

I can't contact Davilex for support because the only way to get help is to register the product. Since this is a demo I can't register it. There probably nothing that can be done to fix this, but I just wanted to post it anyways just in case. I'm hoping that since this is a demo and that all the BUGS probably aren't worked out, the full game will work. My OS is Windows XP.Demos are usually dodgy.

You can try reinstalling it, but this time, clean your registry before doing so.I have REINSTALLED it several times, but that hasn't fixed it. What exactly do you mean by "clean your registry?" Ok everytime I update my ATI Driver by installing the new version for my CATALYST driver, I can't play my multiplayer games like Call of Duty for instance, The graphics are fine and everything but I don't know its everytime I update my Catalyst driver is what messes up my internet gaming...I connect to a server on CoDMP and my internet loses its connection and then I have to restart my COMPUTER again for it to come back up...What's going on? Please help....The latest ATI drivers have worked fine for me when playing CoD.

Scan for viruses, trojans and spyware.

Remove all files related to the driver (Registry, redundant files, etc) using a program such as Driver Cleaner and then reinstall proper drivers.

Be certain that you have the correct drivers for your videocard.The only thing that doesn't work is my internet when I play Call of Duty or any type of game that uses up my graphics card.....and it only happens when I install catalyst drivers.....But I'll try what you said and if it still doesn't work then I'm screwed But thanks Ok things have just gotten worse..........I cleaned my driver and now I can't even open Call of Duty or any other game because it says "Could not load OpenGL. As Raptor pointed out, Emulators are illegal and HARM the games industry. Seeing as this is where I want to be working in ten years time, I'd APPRECIATE it if you didn't try and bankrupt them.its not bankrupting them i think of them as demos and HELPING them out me going and buying there games

the ABILITY of your vedio card and its performance when playing
PC games....the thing i want to ask about is how to perform this
test over my Geforce4 MX4000 if i want to see its capability while
playing a game??
also,i want to ask how can i know that my vedio card has a good FPS??

Generally, the more expensive the card the higher the FPS will be...

You can use benchmarking utilities such as 3DMark 2001 provided by Futuremark or to view your FPS when watching a movie or playing a game you can use Fraps

The higher you set the quality of the game, the lower they will be. The lower your FPS the slower the game will seem to run.

I did an extensive search for the game Sanitarium by ASC Games, but could not find anything relevant. My apolgies if i missed it...

anywho, I bought Sanitarium quite some time ago, and it worked fine (great game!) on my old computer. However, after beating it, i uninstalled it, and havent touched it again until today. I am using a new computer, and while i had no troubles installing the game, it CRASHES within the first few minutes of play.

I believe this to be an issue with Windows XP, given the facts that the game is relatively old (i believe it was written for Windows 98 specifically if i remember), and that the difference in the version of Windows i am running is the only relevant variable i can think of between the comp i use now and the comp that i used to play sanitarium with. I had been running Windows ME on an alienware when sanitarium worked, but i am now running Windows XP.

I know for certain it is not a problem with my hardware as my system is as follows:

P4 @ 3.0 GHZ with HT
2048 mb DDR 400 RAM
ATI Radeon 9800 pro all in wonder
blah blah blah, etc, as you can see its a decent system plenty capable of running sanitarium.
DirectX is at 9.0b or whatever the latest is, openGL is updated, video drivers are as current as possible, and so are the sound card drivers.

i have fiddled with the Windows Compatibility program, and set the compatibility at windows 98, with 256 colors, themes off, and advanced text services off.

i also downloaded that patch that was supposed to correct the error in chapter 2.

however, none of these things have prevented the game from crashing due to a fatal error.

does anyone know of any other fixes for this game? i know this is a longshot given the age of the game, but i really want to get it working so my girlfriend can try this game out (it will scare the crap out of her... i know im evil O:-) )

i was thinking there might be a windows XP patch, but found out that ASC Games went under in 2000, well before XP was released...

please HELP if you can... thanks in advanceAs you say, if the company behind the game went kaput before XP was born, the chances of finding a patch for the game is virtually nil.

The only way I can think of sorting this one out is to dual boot with Windows ME, or to use an emulator to mimic 9x. The former would be the best route, but will only work if you still have the disks - the latter is a bit on the illegal side, but a possible soultion.

But I'm jumping ahead of things here. What I think we'd really like to know is exactly what the error message is. From there, we may be able to get it sorted and hopefully you'll have a working game and a terrified girlfriend.OK, i loaded up the game again, and wrote down as MUCH information as i could about the error.

initially, the error reporting window pops up, with the following message:

"sntrm.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience. If you were in the middle of something, the information you were working on may be lost."

then it goes on to say, click here to report this error to microsoft, etc, blah blah.

knowing that this isnt giving much information about the error, i opened up the section on what the error report contains. a very very long list of lots of binary looking crap, i picked a few things that might be of help on the error...

not sure if any of this helps, if there is anything more specific that is needed, ill look to see if i can locate it.


something else that i have noticed however:
it doesnt seem as though the crash is as random as i first suspected. Each time i play, i can make it a little further into the game before it crashes, and it seems like it only crashes when you reach a new area where new information needs to be loaded into the RAM or something... dont know if this is accurate or relevant tho, just an observation ive made...

Those can or can not contain viruses.. All depends on where you got it from. I suggest you lay off the illegal software if you have no idea what the risks are.it is a virus indeed ...caused by that keygenerator itself..

Splinter Cell(SC) and Splinter Cell Pandora Tomorrow(PT). I am really enjoying SC. The graphics are really nice as is the overall gameplay. All the MISSIONS require a mix of stealth and action with some missions require no kills whatsoever. You can opt to shoot your opponent or sneak up behind and knock him out. The AI in SC is LIMITED however so it's possible to shoot SOMEONE and easily evade his buddies. The AI in PT is MUCH more advanced. On finding a body most often their first response is to call in backup. SC does not allow for multiplayer while even though PT does, it's not nearly as fun as the solo missions. Both these games are worth buying and for me, that's saying ALOT!

Star Wars Battlefront. This is a mmfps along the lines of Battlefield 1942. At first I enjoyed it very much. It's always fun to put on a suit of StormTrooper armor and run around or play a droid. It has the same idea of BF 1942 in that you can take over neutral or enemy spawn points and you have only so many tickets (team deaths) before you LOSE. There are some vehicles you can drive/fly but I find the ground cars move too slow and the ships move much too fast. The maps tend to be just a bit too large to make the cars useful and the maps are too small to maneuver effectivly in a ship. As for the characters.. as fun as it is to be a StormTrooper or droid, any given character (4-5 choices DEPENDING on the team you're playing and the map you're on) only has 2 equippable weapons (repeating rifle and pistol or rocket launcher and a pistol) and a grenade. Boring!! Granted, some characters like the Pilot can also fix vehicles and weapon turrets but there's not enough variablility between teams. The StormTrooper has exactly the same weapons as the Rebel. This game is worth downloading.Battlefield 1942 itself wasn't very exciting either, trees the size of a pencil and no obstacles to hide behind when two Shermans are storming in on your position.

I still have to try Splinter Cell, if it's anything like Hitman, it's bound to be ace.i guess that Hitman is losing its "charm"..Raptor

well hello, at first my problem seemed to be a problem with my monitor.
this is what happens when iam playing a game on my computer. COULD be anything xcom from back in the DAY or a new game like battlefront. I will be playing for about 20 minutes or so. Then the monitor screen will go black then turn to a gray screen. So the monitor is still reading what the computer is sending. I think. Also all the sound stops and i basically am stuck not letting me do anything. I CANT return to window or anything.

the only reason i SAY the video could be the problem is because it acts all crazy. BUt everything stops sounds and video .Inspect your temperatures to see if they BECOME too high.im pretty sure that may be the problem. it seems however i cant get the temperature down. i cleaned and got rid of all the dust but it doesnt seem to help. any ideas of how to keep temp down.First post your temperatures.

I have a brand new Dell windows Xp COMPUTER. I had been PLAYING online games without any trouble and then suddenly only some of the games would play on the site. (www.nabiscoworld.com) I know the site is fine I have checked with friends. I have shocwave and java installed. Why would only some of the games on a site

I bought this flight SIMULATION game and the game loads fine and was installed fine but when I go to play the game it will load and SEEM to want to play. Then a window pops up and tells me DDERR_SURFACELOST. I downloaded the newest version of directX from Microsoft, and some new drivers. I am running XP PRO and have the Nvidia graphics card. give us an EXACT name not just "flight simulator". for all i know this could be 3d Extreams "Terminal Velocity" (1994 flight sim fighter game that ran in dos and had used midi files of i GUY tapping a mic for sound effects.)

I just got kings quest 6 after a while and i have got it running. IU got the video and audio(sound effects) working but there is no speech. i tried solving the PROBLEM but i cant, my computer only supports sound BLASTER and thats it. so with the sound blaster it doesnt still work. Here's the deal.. earlier on i tried to install a Logitech quickcam messenger webcam. During the installation, I needed to insert my windows 98 cd. However, I didnt realize I had windows 98 second edition on my computer, and i accidently replaced a few of my second edition files with lower windows 98 ones. I dont know if this did anything, but my webcam never got any picture so I uninstalled it. Now, whenever I try to start some file types of video files (wmv for example), whenever I try to start my 2D game (which only requires 256 colors to run), and whenever i try to start my gameboy advance roms, it stops responding before it even starts. When I try to cntrl+alt+delete it, it just freezes up my computer, and even THOUGH im still able to move my mouse, I cant click anything. If I try to hit cntrl+alt+delete again, my computer goes to a blue screen error and im FORCED to reset it. Just as a sidenote, I've tried reinstalling my games, my video players, my video card drivers and even directx. Im currently USING directx 9.0c, the highest available VERSION drivers for my card, and windows 98.

Anybody have any idea what's wrong?if i were you, i would back up your improtant game files and roms and reinstall windows. or (since i havent installed 98 lately) try booting the cd and see if theres a repair function

verify that the file exists and that you can access it." the error window appeard with two options: "Retry" and "Cancel"..the Retry button didn't solve the problem

can any one help please??Before reinstalling Doom, completely remove it and clean your registry.

If this concerns a legal copy of Doom 3, have it exchanged for another copy to SEE if perhaps the copy is just FLAWED.

I have the Special Edition LORDS of Magic PC Game and my little siblings have been starting games and saving them. Now I have way too many games saved and can't figure out how to delete them. No matter what I try they won't be deleted. Does anyone know how to delete the saved games?They should be stored in one folder - Have you checked the game folder? Perhaps your children are allowed to choose a savepoint anywhere on the hard DRIVE, I suggest you look up one save, remember it's extension and USE the Windows search in order to find them all.

If you cannot remove them, be certain that the game is not RUNNING or boot into safemode and remove them from there.

Uninstalling the game may help as well, it will most likely prompt you to remove User accounts and savegames or other user-end things.

For some reason, over the past 3 weeks, my computer screen is freezing when i am only playing games. Does this mean my GRAPHIC card (Geforce4 ti 4200) is on its way out. i cant think what else it could be, i have reinstalled its drivers, reinstalled direct x 9c. Any idears as to what you think could cause this could be, would be appreciated. jumbles and the SOUND jumbles as well...causing a very upsetting slowdown in the game

it but on the expense of sound quality.....so plz ,if there a way

I assume these games are not legal, otherwise you would have told me the minmum specifications that are printed on the backside of the box.

I suggest you LOOK them up on the official webpage of Tomb Raider and compare your system to see if your system specifications are adequate to those required for Tomb Raider 4 and 5.try replacing your card with ndivia, x400 i think will do

I too am having a DirectX issue. Everytime I try to load The Sims 2, I get the following message:

Failed to find any DirectX 9.0c compatible graphics adapters in this system! Please make sure you have Direct X 9.0c compatible graphics adapter and have installed the latest drivers provided by the manufacturer. The application will now terminate.

DXdiag told me I did indeed have DirectX 9.0c and that the hardware wasn't up to speed, so I went and got myself the Sis 530 driver, v. 1.08, (I had had an Sis 530) and DXdiag said there were no problems found, but now says:

DIRECT3D functionality not available. You should verify that the driver is a final version from the hardware manufacturer.

What does all this mean, and what can I do about it?!

songbirdIs that an Onboard VIDEOCARD? I donot think it is DirectX 9 compatible, which may be a requirement for The Sims 2.

I suggest you refer to Electronic Arts website where they have a FAQ and technical support that will be able to tell you wheter your videocard is compatible or not.Well, I am not sure what an Onboard video card is, but I have been on techsupport.ea.com, and it has not been very helpful. All of their info on DirectX is about installing. DirectX 9.0c came with the game. I downloaded that, and when things didn't work, I got it from the DirectX website. Plus now that the driver is updated, DXdiag says there are no problems but to CHECK Direct3D functunality, then goes on to say that the functunality test is unavailable. This is why I think it has to do with Direct3D. I have searched a lot of website and no one can tell me ANYTHING about it....

Anyway, thanks for your advice, but EA hasn't been helpful... -sigh-

Not sure if anyone is interested in GETTING an Atari 2600 these DAYS with 130 bundled internal menu selected games but I picked up an Atari 2600 FLASHBACK 9 ( aka Version 9 ) for $40 when going to my local Family DOLLAR to pick up other items. i have replaced my s3 savage4 display adapter with nvidia riva TNT ...i have intel pentium III
and creative soundblaster audioPCI , 800 MHz processor speed....then i downloaded the latest driver
for the nvidia card from nvidia.com...and installed it....then i tried a game called
EMPIRES:DAWN of the modern world by activision ,which didn't work on my s3 adapter(the computer
reboots after entering the main menu),anyway..the game successfly worked with nvidia adapter..
but when i tried to RUN empire earth by sierra ,which is older and needs less requirements,
it didn't work...my monitor switched itself to standby mode without loading the game menu??

so what would be the problem??

Did you properly install the drivers?i didn't actually uninstalled the previous driver ..i just
pluged the new adapter and downloaded the driver
from nvidia.com....should i completely uninstall the
previous driver??I SUGGEST you uninstall both drivers. Run a program such as Advanced System Optimizer V2 to properly CLEAN your registry and redundant files caused by the drivers and other programs and then download the latest updated driver from the Nvidia website.

i will do it...but it is strange that the other game worked

completely cleaning the PC from any registry related to
the older adapter so that the new one works perferctly..
....however ,it didn't solve the main problem..i mean empire earth didn't work and the same
problem happened again...but the cause for this problem
turned out to be something different than the registry..
it is because of the old monitor that i have!!! i didn't
suspect that at the beginning but after i heard the menu music of empire earth without seeing the menu itself,i realized that the game is running smoothly but the monitor isn't accepting it somehow!!anyway,i have a newer 17' monitor ,so i tried to run the game on it..
and surprisingly ,the game worked just fine and everything was alright!!....i encountered the same
problem with Rise of Nations but some other games
like warrior kings battles,global operations,need for
speed unleashed..worked fine on the old monitor...!!!



Perhaps it was DUE to the resolution these programs were set to by default?

firstly, i'm new and don;t know jack about computers.

I used to play several games (Black and White; the original Dooms; and that Atari Aniversary package, loads of fun, really) and all was well until yesterday, when I installed Rallisport Challenge.

it went poorly, i was dissappointed, and got it off my computer. now I try to load my games and they try to change the resolution like they normally do, but it just goes back to the desktop. i really miss terrorizing the peasants.

ONE thing that happened is that once i tried to load rallisport the first time, the game errored and said i should use lower graphical junk. so i did, and was promply dissappointed.

I tried changing the res, but that didn't work.

im running XP and the graphical thingy is ATI.

You can REMOVE drivers from the add/remove software.

It may be good to clean your registry as well.

Advanced System Optimizer V2, Regseeker and Advanced Uninstaller Pro 2004 are excellent programs to do that for you.

If you really have no way of obtaining these drivers and/or programs, donot bother. Just uninstall and reinstall your current drivers by using the CD-ROM that came with your videocard.the bad things you hear about aol are true. the only reason I have to use it is because my family does, which is partly why i got my own laptop in the first place: keep my stuff away from them.

got it fixed, thanksYou can remove faulty registry entries that may be causing PROBLEMS. It's just a better way of removing drivers once you have uninstalled them.

I removed the video card from hardware manager, it sounded risky at first, but when I re-started the computer, it recognized the vid card as new hardware and installed the drivers, thanks to plug-and-play. after the second restart, everything is well. NOTE, you might not get so lucky and would have to install the drivers through the cd you get when you buy the compI suggest you install updated drivers. The Windows plug and play drivers may be outdated and not functioning as well as official drives.

I've just got "Delta Force: Black Hawk Down." I've installed it and what-have-you, I've got tones of memory on my COMPUTER as it's only a couple of weeks old and there's no programs on it....... Buy it keeps skipping, jumping and stalling. Even with everything on lowest resolution its FAR from smooth and CONSIDERING how accurate you need to be when playing it, it ruins the game! Whenever I USE Microsoft Flightsim 2002 or 2004 I run into the same problem. I can't calilbrate my yaw on my joystick correctly; it always takes a hard left. I've gone through the windows calilbrate and used different sticks, all the same. Suggestions?CHECK the manufacturer's SITE for updates/patches first.You have used different sticks, and still no luck? That's a computer issue then... Try using the game calibration... Go into the game, and toy around with the SETTINGS. There should be some settings in there for your issue.

I am trying to play a game on my computer, and it plays well. But EVERYTIME it has to load something, i have to WAIT for the disk to start spinning again before resuming play. Is there any WAY to set the computer up to spin the disk at all times?

If it helps, i am using an Acer with Windows XP.That's BECUASE the game needs files that are on the CD. I'm not sure if there is a way to make the CD always spin, but I don't see how that could help... You would just be putting ware on your drive... Not to MENTION your fans, etc. Sorry :-/

You can RUN memtest from a floppy or the hard drive.Am thinking about trying to reinstall DX9 THOUGH if that doesn't work POSSIBLY have to reformat, sadly, unless there's a SOLUTION out there.You will need to set your A drive as the first BOOT device in bios then boot with the memtest floppy in the drive.Quote

I'm currently looking to buy a new laptop my old Dell cpi ax400 is old now, it still works ok for office applications but its RUBBISH for PLAYING games.

The WAY i SEE it all laptops are capable of standard office apps, so the priority for choosing a machine lies with games capabiliies and ive heard that laptops are generally not designed for gaming.

I was wondering ANYONE had any recomendations as I don't want to waste my money, i only have a buget of up to 1000 pounds (pound symbol key not working on keyboard).

I'd appreciate any help on this. On one of my kids games, the screen flashes black and then exits. I can see all of the intro sequences, but when it comes time to play, it just stops. This happens every time. Strange thing is, I can run the game on my Pentium II system (333Mhz) without any problem, but it won't run on my newer system (P4 1.8GHz). I've updated my video diver. I NEED new ideas. Here are the Game spec and my system specs:

Have you checked the game website for fixes & patches?

Where did you update from, don't use Windows update because the drivers there are out of date, go to the manufacturer's website and get the latest video & sound drivers.

If these steps don't fix it then we will look at your ram.

I've run a Demo version of Radar Sync 2, which supposedly shows me what outdated drivers I have. I have 2 that I haven't updated yet. The CPU to AGP controller and the Enhanced Audio Controller. Should I try updating them as a next step?

I am trying to install a computer game on my computer called SSN-21 Seawolf. It's a fairly old game put out by ELECTRONIC Arts. Their website no longer shows anything about this game. I an running Windows XP/Home version 5.1.260. I have sufficient computer presources installed , with the exception of expanded memory or EMM386.exe that is called for.

Can I run this GAMES in an XP/Home environment using the Command Prompt?

How do I install EMM386.exe in my config.sys file and where do I get it? I don't think it comes with Windows XP. Is it a driver or something one can download from somehere?
