Solve : Gears of War trouble?

Answer»

I recently bought gears of war for the pc and it will not stay running. My computer meets all the requirements.
2.8GHz P4 processor
4 GB RAM
GeForce 8500 GT 512MB video card

I bought this game from a store that is going out of business and so I can't return it. It installed fine but when I try to play it, it will LET me play for like 3 minutes and then a window pops up and says the program encountered a problem and needs to close. I looked online to see if there was a patch I needed. I found one and installed it and it worked fine. The NEXT morning however, when I tried to play it came up with the same window saying it encountered a problem and needs to close and has continued to do that until now. Has anyone had this same experience? I have tried uninstalling the game and reinstalling it. I haven't made any CHANGES recently to my PC. It's very frustrating because it's one of the best games I've ever played. So I'd really like to get it working. Any suggestions? Thanks!I forgot to mention that I am running it on Windows XP with DirectX 9. Does it need directx 10? Thanks again for any help!directX 10 is only for windows vista so you don't have a problem there

Have you tried updating your video card drivers
http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-usYes I downloaded the latest drivers last night after I had already posted. I still get the same error. I'm running out of options to try. Maybe I just got a lemon game? Unfortunately I don't know what else to recommend, other than uninstalling and reinstalling the game.
I had major problems trying to get it to work for me too, the whole "Windows Live Gaming" thing really doesn't like me.
Not sure how well your system will handle the game either, it's a real killer and the minimum requirements lie.

Welcome back beanhead by the way, good to see you around. Thanks Calum. I haven't been able to post much cause my job takes up most of my TIME. But that's life. lol. Yeah the one time it worked for a couple hours it ran perfectly fine. No lag or anything. But yeah the windows live thing doesn't seem to like me either. Did you ever get it to work eventually or did you give up? I might try to uninstall it and reinstall it again just to see if 3 times is a charm. Maybe I'll just have to break down and get an Xbox 360 now that the prices are down. Thanks for all your help!Sorry, I didn't see you'd already uninstalled and reinstalled, my bad.
Good to hear it worked with no lag for you, I haven't had time to try it on my new PC yet but my older one lagged at the end of each level, really badly. Maybe just my own bad experience.
The Windows Live experiences I had related to Halo 2, I haven't even attempted getting Gears online yet because Halo 2 daunted me so much. The only two reasons I installed Vista were Halo 2, and Crysis in DX10. Crysis was barely playable in Vista and Halo 2 wouldn't even work - hence the reason I'm now Vista-less.Windows live is a pain to get started up. It took me an entire day to figure out. Apparently you have to register your account with windows live, you can't use the profile you just created to get online.
Here's the link if you want to do that. http://get.live.com/getlive/overviewThis may be a dumb question, but do I have to have that windows live in order to be able to play the game? I just figured if that was if I wanted to do online multiplayer stuff, which I probably will never use. Also don't you have to pay to keep using windows live? Or am I just misunderstanding what that is all about? Thanks again for all the help guys!I can't blame you for misunderstanding windows live, in all honesty I don't think I completely grasp it.

You are right that you only need it to play online. As FAR as the paying thing, from what I understand there's more than one kind of windows live. I'm pretty sure there's like a basic one you can make/keep for free but there's some kind of gold windows live and it gives you more privelages. At least that's what I've deduced from the peice of paper giving me a month of free "windows live gold".

I've tried my best to understand windows live, and everything it entails, But I've long since given up for these reasons.

Solve : Sim City 4 Deluxe Edition?

Answer»

I upgraded my mom's PC so my younger brother could play his games on it without frequent lagging and freezing, and he decided he wanted to install Sim City 4. So we get it installed and start playing the game and without any warning the SCREEN goes black. The Sims toolbar on the bottom of the screen is still there, and the cursor is there, just the actual town and surrounding region is black. I can hit Ctrl-Alt-Del, and then hit cancel, and when it goes back to the game everything is back to normal. After a a little more playing TIME the same thing happens. This happened before I changed some graphics settings in the game.

I changed the color from 16bit to 32bit, and that by itself didn't help, so I also changed the Renderer from Hardware to Software. After doing so, everything has worked fine so far without any issues. What exactly does it mean to switch from hardware to software rendering? I know the game is fairly old, but I WOULD think it would run just fine with the new GPU I installed. I guess I was wrong.

Solve : Oblivion on GeForce fx 5200 ??

Answer»

Hi... Here's the problem ... My pc is 3.2 ghz 1 gb ram and 5200 fx 256 v.CARD ... The THING is that Oblivion needs 128 card and somehow it dares to lag for me ... HARD ... *censored* !what's the problem?

maybe visit canyourunit.com and have the site check out your computer configurations against the minimum specs of oblivion to see how well it'll go... did it ... shows EVERYTHING green but it says FAIL ... just because my v.card isn't 5700 ... Ok, try running the game and see how it goes, if you have not already done it.

To be honest with you, I feel a FX 5200 is not a good card for games. But if it can run oblivion and you're happy with the quality, then it's all good I suppose "the 128MB card" is a system requirement.

take a look at the chart on this page:

http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:System_Requirements

specifically, the chart states that the playability for the entire Geforce FX series to be "Extremely Low (without Oldblivion)"

the point is it lags hard on extra low ... forgot to mention it, sry ... Do Other Game give Same Problem Of Oblivion Type! that is quite stupid QUESTION (no ofence , m8) but i didn't try anything else since I'm quite demoralized by Oblivion ... Are the drivers official? Its quite simple, the FX5200 came out god knows how long ago and even lowly flash applications choke it. I've seen that game chug on lower end nVidia GeForce 7xxx series cards, so there is absolutely no way you are going to get it to run smooth on a nVidia FX5200 128MB 64 bit AGP/PCI GPU Kebubas. I played that game through a few years back on a nVidia 256MB 128 bit PCI-E x16 7600GT, 2.8GHz Pentium D, and a gig of DDR2 667, had to scale it down to 1024x768 and turn quite a few settings down or off. Its rather intensive because the maps are all massive.

Games like Oblivion are a perfect example of this decades advances in computer hardware (and 3d technology that keeps thwarting them).Quote from: Dead Reckon on February 06, 2010, 12:11:10 AM

seconded. the card is just to darn old for newer games like Oblivion.

I never was able to get into Oblivion; I've never r eally been big on the whole Fantasy/medieval type stuff. Love fallout 3 though!

I can't remember who it was, but somebody said (I think it's on the forum somewhere, not sure) that they played through Oblivion many times when their average fps was <5... crazy.mine is 256 ... Quote from: kebubas on February 06, 2010, 09:50:12 AM
mine is 256 ...

according to your first post yes, your card is 256MB. just like the one dead reckon is speaking of.Ah, I thought it was a 128 FX5200, a hundred twenty eight megs ain't going to make a difference though. Not on that little card, heck not on any card these days.

I love fallout 3 too, and I'm more into shooters myself, I've been playing Fallout since the ORIGINAL point and click game released in 1998, which was based on an older game called Wasteland. I've got the game of the year edition of Fallout 3, bought it 'cause it was cheaper to get the expansions that way. It chugs so I have to replace my GPU and probably my CPU. Particle effects kill me , that is, if I can find a CPU that this board supports that hasn't been phased out or had the price jacked for the sake of saving or making a few pennies.

Kebubas, do you have any kind of budget to upgrade your computer? If so, find us some specifications on it and we can find you a better graphics card for cheap. They sell FX5500's (not that you should get one, they suck, horribly) for $20 now, I can remember when that card cost $200 i had 5500 128 but I don't see any difference now ... I had ATI Radeon 9600 pro 256 (I was able to play Oblivion on Ultra) before taking my PC to service. Now I have 3.2 ghz (instead of 1. 1 gig ram (instead of 512 mb) and FX 5200 256 (cuz my radeon was not compatible with the new m.board ... any alternatives people for my radeon ?

Solve : Dragon Age Origins Frame Rate Loss?

Answer»

The game runs normally for somewhere between 1-2 hours and then starts to run slower and slower. There does not seem to be any consistency to the laps in performance except time. Like the game is slowly using all the available memory. Does anyone have any idea as to why or better yet a solution?

My system specs are as stated in forum profile.
(64-bit OS)In Oblivion there is a COMMAND; PCB [Purge Cell Buffer], which free's up memory from previously loaded CELLS (previously visited rooms). Does anyone know if DAO has a similar console command?Dude Giv 1 Query At A TimeThere is a suspected memory leak with Dragon Age: Origins that causes this. As of the last patch (patch 1.02a (December 17)) it has not been fixed. It's been experienced by most people playing the PC version of the game, including myself.

Patch information can be found here:

There are a number of workarounds for this. One is simply exiting the game and restarting it when things start to get slow. Other workarounds can be found in this thread:
http://social.bioware.com/forum/1/topic/58/index/87363/1

Even after trying the suggested workarounds, many people still have the issue, so don't be surprised if none of them work for you. Thanks, I've not found the work arounds yet, but at least I know that I'm not the only one. The problem seems quite random although there is a pattern of graphics cards (Geforce 8-9 series and ATi 3000 series).

Hilariously THOUGH my old computer should run dragon age perfectly as it has a Geforce 7 series card (one very similar to the recommended)The most common thing is actually multi-core processors. The most common fix is setting core affinity to half the number of cores the processor has (1 core for dual core processors, 2 cores for quad core processors, etc.). It's been a problem since release 2 months ago, but they still haven't found out what's causing it. I'm actually very surprised that they didn't run into this issue during beta testing, considering how widespread it is.Try reducing Resoultion and Texture Quality Quote from: the_mad_joker on January 23, 2010, 06:15:19 AM

That's a good observation but then how many people still use single core processors compared to dual/quad?

Solve : Fallout 3 constant lag?

Answer»

Today , when i turned on my computer, i started up fallout 3. After the first 2 - 5 minutes it starts to lag and keeps LAGGING every 3 minutes or so. i turned down the details to low and it still lags. is there any fix and why did it start lagging?

System specs:
Windows 7
nVidia Geforce 8600 GT 256mb
Quad Core 2.33ghz
Your graphics card is a little out dated. How long have you had it?

How much RAM is installed in this system?

It's never lagged like this before now?before today it worked perfectly. yea i know its outdated but it can still run a MAJORITY of games that are out. i have 2 gb on my system. You may want to run a scan with your AV and spyware programs.

If you do that and nothing pops up that should be taken as a threat, then go to the Nvidia website and make sure you have the latest drivers for the 8600 GT.

Also, 2GB of RAM is about the bare minimum your system should have with Windows 7. Might wanna think about adding 1 or 2 gigs.I ran AVG antivirus and it found nothing. Actually , I took it off cause I thought it was causing me problems. I DOWNLOADED the latest drivers too. It just made it run little bit longer before lagging. I could add another gig but like i said, it ran perfectly well since the day i installed it. I have other games too and they run fine....Are the other games you play just as demanding as Fallout 3, or are they less demanding? Some games can be picky about what video card is being used.

The processor shouldn't be causing issues. Neither should your 8600 GT. Have you checked to see if there are any new patches available for Fallout 3? It's worth a shot.Quote from: t_blake07 on February 02, 2010, 09:43:06 PM

Ive ran my computer on max specs on both fallout 3 and left 4 dead. Fallout 3 lags a little more in some larger scale areas(i.e. mall, whitehouse, etc). For REFERENCE, my pc specs:

Solve : HaloGen???

Answer»

I wish HaloGen wasn't cut out from Bungie, does anybody know the remake of it though? What r u Talking About Dude! HaloGen was a mod for Command & Conquer that changed EVERYTHING in the game to the halo universe theme, many modders came together to create this, but when it was about 70% complete, Bungie, the Company that created the Halo universe found out about the project and forced the creaters to delete it or face legal actions. without a choice the modders re-did the mod into something else, a theme they MADE up and created a website to post it, the QUESTION is:

Does anybody know that website?this mod also gave inspiration for Halo WarsSo....You're asking us to help you find a mod that Bungie has banned?

Nope, the modders re-did the mod so that doesn't contain Bungie's Material, RATHER a version of their own. and it is not called HaloGen anymore either, i just want to know if i can get a link to that new version.

Ensemble Studios made Halo Wars, but they may of taken things from HaloGen's Blueprints into the game, such as Cobras, which "Coincidentally" were featured in HaloGen. (HaloGen was under development before Halo Wars was created)Sounds intresing Indeed it does. If google can't FND it, I doubt anyone here can.found this:

thanks, that seems to be the right thing, Asylm is the change the modders have DONE to HaloGen, just no more Halo contentMore information about Halogen is on halo.wikia.com/, search in HaloGen.

The site shows some of the BluePrints, including the original cobra, why it was deleted, and some other information about it and the new project.

BTW, the photos on http://www.asylum.slipstreamproductions.net/, are sick! these modders made very good work in Asylum.

Was it DONE by loader or was it a "extract and play" by razor? If so, chances are, if the game isn't exactly popular(I've never heard of shadowman in my life) the crack can cause the game to either utilize more cpu or simply not work depending on your specs and OS.
PS Cracking is not allowed to be discussed on this forum. Quote from: cintari on February 01, 2010, 05:51:33 AM

Is there a paticular reason why these games are usually horrible?: is there a smaller amount of time than usual for their designers to assemble one OR is the plot, characters, etc. limited because the majority of them have ALREADY been introduced by the movie, tv show, etc.?Quote from: wowsrc on January 30, 2010, 07:30:38 AM

It's mostly a time constraint. using the E.T video game as another example (probably the biggest video game flop ever) they literally gave one guy 6 months to make the entire thing... considering the time he had it isn't too bad.

In that case though for some reason they decided to produce more game cartridges then there were Atari's in existence. the reasoning behind that I cannot fathom.

Even so, as I said; about 10% of games based on movies are good; I'd say maybe 1 in one hundred is really "great" For example, Goldeneye for the n64 was an excellent game, one of the best for the system, even.

I might have been too strong in saying there was a 90% chance of suckage; nowadays the ratio is probably a lot lower, but really it's more a question of who the developer was; some TRY to sell as many as possible based in the movie/series license before people clue in that the game blows; others take the time to make the game truly great; the problem is it's hard to tell the difference sometimes.Quote from: BC_Programmer on January 29, 2010, 08:08:55 AM

BC hit the nail on the head here. And no, I don't think 90% is overstated, in fact it might even be worse than that.

Yes, because it doesn't matter what the game is like or what its reviews are like, fans are still going to buy it. They might complain about it, they might play it for an hour then never again, but the money will be spent and that's all that matters. It's the same way in reverse (Game to Movie). The game could be a smash hit, but the movie will most likely suck, but the fans will still go see it.

On top of that, there can be really great games and really great movies, but the two just don't translate into the other very well.

Here are some explanations why Games after movies "Suck":

1. If a game is made after a movie, the game has too little detail, making it "suck". the only exception I can make is for a series of movies, like LOTR and Star Wars, they have many movies, so game designers can add more details to make the game better.

2. Most games after movies come out around the time of the movie's release date, thus Game designers have only a little time to make the game, another reason for its "Suckyness"

3. Most games after movies have smaller budgets than compared to other games

4. Most games after movies have restraints, they have to follow the movie's plot, which can make the game "Suck"
I TOTALLY AGREE WITH U JUICE

Solve : "No program start menu found." promt for Diablo 2 CD.?

I'm SORRY, but all I know about the computer I'm using is that its running Windows 7. I got home from a trip and there was a new computer setting in place of my dinosaur. Anyway, I decided to reinstall my Diablo 2, and when I inserted the CD, a error came up that said "No program start menu found." The disk are a little SCRATCHED, but I've ran games with worse. I tried shutting off the auto-run and tried to manually install it, but it had the same affect. I've already CLEANED the disks. I just want to know if its because of the scratches, or if there is something I can do about it.Is UR DVD Rom Visible http://www.google.com/#hl=en&q=no+program+start+menu+found+diablo+2&aq=0&aqi=g6&oq=No+program+start+menu+found+&fp=435311d5ec9ae78f

It really depends, it could be not as such hardware related but maybe the actualy computer software and drivers arnt working correctly...

Make sure you have the lastest drivers for your card.

I had an issue like this a little while ago, I ended up reformatting, the problem disappeared immediately.

A 200W PSU though...Seems scarily inadequate for any type of gaming these days.

If you are going to upgrade the Power Supply, do not get a $20 cheapie, or you will be very upset when in a months time, the computer doesn't work again. Get at least a $60-80 one.

@ kebubas:

I reformatted, reinstalled all the drivers, problem went away. So I don't actually know what caused my problem, but it was not hardware. It Could b A hardware and software problem too...

Solve : Less intense games laggy on a high end pc.?

Answer»

So recently I have STARTED some computer gaming. Completely new to me. Never been much of a gamer myself. But the two games I play, Grand Theft Auto Iv and Need For SPEED Shift, are laggy, and sometimes crash to the desktop, or give me a bsod. I have no idea why the heck this is happening to me on my computer, but it is annoying. I am above recommended requirements, I have a clean system(I think), and everything seems to be in order. All of my drivers are updated, and all patches installed. Is there something I am missing? MY specs are in that little thing on the left under my avatar....... this is really worrying me because I think something is FRIED or incompatible. this is a relatively new computer and nothing should be going wrong. I also really hope this is posted in the wrong area. If not, kindly re-direct me and we will be on our way.....I hope!

thx For GTA 4 , try running it in compatibility mode for Windows XP Service Pack 2..

For: Need For Speed Shift, try compatibility mode for Windows XP SERV. Pack 3 or Vista Service Pack 1..

Solve : Run-time Error 7: Out of Memory?

Answer»

Well I recently downloaded YVD(Yugioh Virtual Desktop) and it was working fine until, one day I started it up and I GOT this error message "Run-time Error 7: Out of Memory" I know my memory requirements meet the expected requirements and it was working until today. So I TRIED reinstalling it but to no avail. So I went to Command Prompt and typed, "regsvr32 COMCTL32.OCX" and it gave me a success message but YVD gave me the same error. So I then downloaded a new COMCTL32.OCX file placed the new one in my system32 folder and typed in Command Prompt "regsvr32 \windows\system32\COMCTL32.OCX" and I got a message saying "DllRegisterServer ... succeeded". But YVD still gives me the same out of mem error, what should I do? Okay, for zombie master, I want to change my death sound to the tourrettes guy saying oh sh**! Now lets say I have the said sound effect, how would I put it in place of the default sound effect. The File Is in Which format ? ex OGG , WAV , MP3 , AAC or otherAudio files for most games are programmed in and can't be changed.

Actually I've never HEARD of a game where you can change the audio files except for something that runs in emulation. Quote from: Quantos on January 14, 2010, 06:34:07 PM

<edit> Actually I've never heard of a game where you can change the audio files except for something that runs in emulation. </edit>

I've never seen a game where the sound files are programmed in.

Ever.

Duke 3d? It's in the GRP file, and you can change it by editing user.con. Doom? In the WAD. easy to change. newer games are a bit trickier but I've managed to replace the rap crap in Underground and Underground 2 with decent music, too. Just needed to convert it to some weird proprietary format EA uses.

And, more in context, half-life 2 resources are WAV files. Zombie master is a HL2 mod; I don't have the mod, but you can surely find the proper files to edit/replace by browsing your half-life 2 install folder. not sure what the mod folder name is; episode 1 is EPISODIC, for example; I'd have to guess "zombie".

in either case, the files you'll need to change will be somewhere in the sound folder within that folder.

\episodic\sound\npc\antlionI stand corrected.

I was thinking more in the lines of Diablo 2, COD Modern Warfare, Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit(can probably change the music tracks), COD World at War. I'd forgotten about Duke Nukem, Doom and Quake.

Thanks for the correction BC.yeah I changed Hot pursuit 2 myself.

All the others have sound files; none of them are literally programmed in. (in fact, the last time they were programmed in was when they were being emitted from the PC speaker). they can be compiled into the exe, but even those can be changed with a resource hacker.Quote from: BC_Programmer on January 14, 2010, 07:58:20 PM

Ok, i'll go check right now.Nearly any game can be modified if you know how. Actually, once you know how to edit the game's archive files, such as Blizzard's MPQ files, you can actually edit the files or even extract them for play elsewhere. Truth is, you can do this with most games. The issue lies in companies that use proprietary or modified codecs. For example, Blizzard's video files (modified MPEG codec) won't play right if you just pop them out of the MPQ, they have to be converted or the appropriate codec needs to be installed (easily found online). Hasbro Interactive did a similar thing with their Star Wars Monopoly title years ago. The video files (scenes directly from the movies) were encoded upside down and backwards (in other words, flipped both vertically and horizontally). While they would play normally in game, they would appear backwards and upside down if you tried to open the files directly.

Some games actually give you most of the files and encourage modding and even tell you how to do it (examples being Neverwinter NIGHTS and Dragon Age, both Bioware games).

As for getting into certain archives, some are simply renamed ZIP or RAR files, and some use a proprietary archive format which require SPECIAL viewers to view and edit.Cool, that's something that I haven't looked into since the days of Doom 2 or Duke Nukem 3D.Overlord 1 and 2
their sound files r just in mp3 making it easier 4 the user 2change

But some r packed in a single file

such as crysis

pak is just a renamed zip file

Solve : game crashes at the same place/time?

As some of you know I bought Final Fantasy 7 recently for the pc. I play the game on two separate computers. On one machine everything works fine, but on the other machine, which is an eMachines W2247 it crashes in the same spot every time I play it. For those of you who are familiar with the game, it crashes right when I enter into a chocobo race up at the GOLD Saucer. While looking at my Chocobo's statistics, just before the race begins, everything is working, and when I press the START button on the controller to begin the race, the game crashes and I get the message: ff7.exe has ENCOUNTERED a problem and needs to close. Sorry for the inconvenience..

I've isolated the problem as much as I can and can't FIGURE this out... The only thing I have to go on is what Event Viewer is TELLING me:

Description: faulting application ff7.exe, version 0.0.0.0, faulting module ff7.exe, version 0.0.0.0, fault address 0x00364de2

I've googled the info. from event viewer but not having much luck interpreting this stuff...

well I'll be dog-gonned

I tore my computer apart trying to figure this whole thing out and the solution to the problem was merely applying an unofficial patch, which was available on the manufacturers website, deep in their archives. The game works fine now.

Apparently the problem was in the fact that the game was designed for Windows 95 and I've been trying to run it on XP. However, I've been running the game the whole time on Vista without problems, provided that I run it in compatibility mode for Win 95. Then again, that's what I was doing when trying to play the game on XP, so naturally I was pretty confused...

After recalling some basic things I learned a while back, it dawned on me that one of the keys to troubleshooting is the ability to know where to find information, especially when it comes to applications.

So I thought, "Duhhhhhhhhh! Go to the mfr website!"

I have.....(installed in this ORDER)
The Sims
Hot Date
Vacation
Unleashed
Makin Magic

Im guessing there installed in the wrong order cause it keeps saying to insert the correct cd-rom. Wich order do i NEED to install them in?The correct order to install them is by release date. Once all are installed, if I remember RIGHT you should play from the disc of the last ONE installed (Makin' Magic in your case). Here's the release order of all the expansions:

The Sims: Livin' Large
The Sims: House Party
The Sims: Hot Date
The Sims: Vacation
The Sims: Unleashed
The Sims: Superstar
The Sims: Makin' Magic

Since you said you've installed them in this order, which disc are you using to try to play the GAME?

The Sims is notorious for this little problem. Can't believe they never did anything to fix it or simplify it.

heck even with all level 100's I barely come out of those battles alive. I usually end up using one of my infinite master balls on it. Of course if my Pokemon box is full I might be screwed.

wow, I just checked my Pokemon Gold/Silver savegame, which I played through emulation, 146 hours. my red/blue is only 46 hours though. heh. I say gold/silver and red/blue because I "cheat" and rename the SAV files for the emulator; For example, catch as many as possible through blue, rename the save file and use the pokemon red ROM, and encounter all the pokemon red pokemon, hee hee. (for example, oddish rather then bellsprout) Good times.

haven't played any of them for a very long time, at least a year.I play alot. It varies from time to time, but I'll often spend around 3-6 hours a day on gaming.
I have to game, really. The clan I'm in play in the biggest european Team Fortress 2 league, and I'm on said warteam. That said, I game alot more than just TF2.Since MW2......4 hours a day.
Before......1/2 hour a week.i play about 7 hrs (3 hours trying to make my pc work properly, or trying to fight with crashes, restarts etc.)about 4-5 hours a day!

Solve : Freeze, desktop, back to game.?

Answer»

So whenever I play Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 on my computer, every so often the game will freeze up, go to a black screen for a second, show my desktop for a second, then go back to the game. It's acting like it's alt-tabbing out, but I don't press alt-tab. And it's not just Call of Duty, it's also Empire: Total War and Tropico 3, but it's at its worst in CoDMW2.

Specs: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q9400 @ 2.66GHz
4.0 GB RAM
GeForce 9800 GTX (Thing's a beast!)
Running Windows 7
Antec Earthwatts 650 (3 12v rails)

So these games run graphically no problem, but it's the constant but random stops that make me mad, and I have no clue why it might be doing this.I would check temperatures during the gaming sessions, it could be that the card is BECOMING non-responsive, and 'pausing' the game to become more stable / cool down, I KNOW ATi cards do this with VPU recover, not so sure with the nVidia cards. What other programs are running in the background?Sometimes i'll have Daemon TOOLS and EA Download manager in the background, but I ALWAYS make sure I SHUT down any windows of anything I have open before I play any game. And heat might be a problem, but I've tried opening up the side and that didn't help at all. I just downloaded the latest driver update and haven't had any real problems yet. If that was seriously the solution, I'm sorry I wasted space with this topic :/I'll keep my fingers crossed for you.

Dear friends, I got problem with the game files. I am unable to uninstall one of the game files from my computer, and one of the game files are installed but invisible( since I found it when I start re-installing the program). Earlier , both the programs were running successfully but now they are not. I want to uninstall those files. I have tried it to uninstall from "Add or Remove programs" menu of CONTROL panel, but could not do so. Please help me, if u can.Can we have some more info. (the game, where you got it, your system specs, files not removed and how you know they are there if there invisible.)does invisible mean that you have the program installed on your computer (you can find it in program files or WHATEVER directory you specified) but it's not showing up/listed in the ADD?REMOVE panel?Hello friends, while BOOTING, my computer stay for few seconds showing the line "Invalid BOOT.INI file, booting from C:\windows". What is that message ? Is the boot sector got corrupted by virus ? What is the remedial action for this ? I don't have any problem using my computer since the computer gets BOOTED anyway through window. Please suggest what to do .I suggest you start a NEW thread, with details of your computer and OS.i usually DELETE the game folders manualy and then use cleaners (like CCleaner) which can find loose files/folders and cuz they don't respond to anything, cleaners mark them as unusable (same with registry) . Try this way of deleting games. Quote from: kebubas on January 08, 2010, 03:00:08 PM

I don't use it to uninstall programs... I use it to clean up after uninstalling programs ...

if I understand it correctly, what you do is you delete the games folder, and let ccleaner try to pick of the pieces?

This doesn't really work that well. The only pieces are probably in the registry, and the only ones it will fix are any file associations, since it only scans HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT, whereas games and applications usually store their data in HKEY_CURRENT_USER or HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.I agree with BC on that one.

Have you tried Revo Uninstaller?Maybe try the uninstall tool.

Solve : Budget Upgrade for $100 on old Celerom PC??

Answer»

Can you Upgrade for $100?
Here is a request.
How can a youngster take an older machine and make it into a good gaming experience. Right now my nephew has an older Intel motherboard with a CELERON 2.1 ghz processor and 512 MB of memory.
His current AGP 4x card is a Geo Force 5200 series with only 128 MB of memory. You'd like to get a newer card that has about 512 MB and he would like to up his system memory to about 2 GB. Unfortunately, the budget limit is $100. We have sought the buying used items on a bay, and maybe we'll do that to stretch the budget. Trying to get the best deal for the money is hard to do. I just don't have enough experience with what goes with what. Should we try for one of the new ATI x1600 series and buy as much RAM as we can afford?

How much to spend on more RAM?
How much to spend on good used Graphics card?
(AGP 4X)
Any suggestions?I am afraid it will be hard with a Celeron, but what kinds of games does he want to play? Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2? World of Warcraft? Sims 3?

If he wants to learn about computers, I have a free idea. Go to some local computer stores (not the large retail chains, but a small, local shop that builds and repairs PCs). Ask if he can see their "boneyard" where they put old computers. I was recently looking for a couple components and went to a local shop. Never had been there before. The guy at the shop couldn't have been happier to have someone offer to take some old systems off his hand. He had a back storage room, no heat, no electricity, where he had 15-20 PCs that no longer worked for whatever reason. He said I could take whatever I ended up taking two computers, with hard drives, motherboards, video cards, DVD drives, basically everything but RAM. I'm sure they won't work as-is, but your nephew could possibly salvage a better CPU, video card, and maybe some other useful components.

If you're going to spend money to upgrade the Celeron, RAM will probably be easiest. Just about any video card will probably be faster than the CPU, so he won't realize the full benefit of the new graphics card. If you do buy RAM, get it soon. I've seen some memory prices double in the past month, and this time of year it typically gets worse.

Good luck! i baught my ATI radeon 9600 pro (I paid 35 LT for it [15 $ or so]) and I can play TES 4 : OBLIVION on Ultra High with quite nice fps (20 or so) and if you check my specs i've uploaded into my profile, my machine shouldn't even turn on... XDI'm sorry to say, 100 Dollars (I'm assuming US Dollars) isn't going to get you alot of bang for buck. AGP is virtually a dead technology, the cards aren't made anymore, PCI-Express is now the way graphics cards are made. The best AGP card i have seen recently was an ATi HD 4650, but this cost nearly $200 NZ dollars.

As for the Processor...it all depends on what the motherboard can handle. I'm guessing the board is a Socket 478 with an older celeron series (poor him) sometimes you can get an older 2.4GHz - 3.0GHzPrescott core 478 CPU for $15 here in NZ off trade me, (NZ equivalent of eBay) but most people realise they are now RARE and worth a lot more, and sell for over $150.

In my experience, he would be better off saving up somewhere around $600, and then upgrading the entire machine;

Motherboard
CPU
RAM
(he could possibly keep the hard drive)
Power Supply (He may not have to, it depends on what he already has)
Video Card.

The case can be kept, but the rest will change, and you WILL notice a huge DIFFERENCE in games and even day to day use.

You can see on the side there a history of my old rigs...and my one I have now still amazes me

mypersonaltechadvisor's statement is very true though. I work in one of those small chain stores in NZ, and sometimes we just put all of the older/unwanted stuff in a box at the front desk, it goes like wildfire. Go and see some, I am willing to bet they would be more than happy to sell you some parts for his machine super cheap or even give them away.

Goodluck!Yes, the processor he has is a limiting factor in the performance you can get out of his existing hardware. Maybe I can persuade him to spend a few dollars on a new CPU for the 478 socket. Also, I think he should up the memory to at least a gigabyte or even more.
The game seem is most likely to play would be some of the older games. Such as the games from the a series of the Tomb Raider, The Sam's and games like that. I don't believe he has any of the newer games.
Thanks for the suggestions.Quote from: Geek-9pm on January 08, 2010, 05:47:22 PM

(I should have mentioned this before) A good starting point is to find out the model numbers of everything, and gathering a list of specifications, eg What processors will the motherboard handle? What is the maximum speed and capacity of RAM the motherboard will handle? does my board take IDE, SATA or both? ect.

No point in buying a 3.0GHz prescott 478 if the motherboard only supports Northwooc and williamette cores.I was playing games on a 350 Mhz k6-2 just fine, thank you.

An Upgrade for 100$ is certainly doable; new video card, new processor; and off ebay they will be pretty cheap. The fact that video cards are now made using PCI-E is completely irrelevant. They used to make cards with AGP, those cards didn't simply vanish. Heck, I have 5 or 6 AGP cards, a handful of PCI video cards, and a handful (4, maybe 5) ISA video cards; and I'm certain people like me are selling their AGP cards on ebay and other sites. They certainly won't be "top of the line" but the question was upgrade; and the PC in question certainly out performed my K6-2, which I used comfortably.

One thing you could do is just give them a old Commodore 64. then they will have to write their own games

Solve : Full Freeze/Hard Lockup in games under Win XP SP3...?

Answer»

Hi guys

First my Specs:

Asus P5KPL-CM Mobo
Intel C2D E7400 @ 2.8GHz (Stock)
4GB DDR2 800 2X2GB sticks (running in dual channel 667)
Amaze ATi HD 4870 1GB with Accellero Twin Turbo cooler
Creative X-Fi Extreme Audio 7.1 Channel PCI-e EDITION (in 5.1 channel mode)
500W Auriga PSU

So the problem is, games will completely randomly freeze my whole machine.

I don't have a problem ever while surfing the net, emails, etc, but when playing a GAME, and I mean ANY game, My computer will hard lock, repeating the last 500ms or so of audio, forcing me to push the reset button to get it working again.

I have checked my temperatures, nothing too high. The highest I have seen my GFX ram hit is 70 Degrees C at full load, whereas most other forums i read had theirs at 80+

I do use Surround gaming, but that seems to not be an issue, as I would get a BSOD, right?

I have lots of games I am currently 1/2 way through, so reformating at this time is not an option.

The games I have had the lockups in:

Age of Empires 1 (yeah I still play it!)
Oblivion
Morrowind
COD 4
COD 5
Medal of Honor - Airborne

Any Ideas?

Kurtis

EDIT:

Just ran Memtest+ 86 v4 with no errors at all, and also ran 3DMark06, with each test making 2 passes, no errors/freezing :S (
Played COD 1 for a few hours before finally getting a different error again! a error in CODsp.exe in module atioglxx.dll...so ATi drivers to blame for the lot maybe? I'm running Catalyst 9.9I believe that's part of ATI's OpenGL driver. I know it's a pain, especially with ATI drivers, but try downloading a fresh driver installer, removing the driver and CCC and reinstalling it all. Make sure you get all the files, I know ATI likes to leave stuff here and there, or at least they used to, don't know if they ever fixed that.

If the latest driver doesn't work, try getting an 8.x version. Some people had this with the 9.x drivers, but it went away when they downgraded to 8.x.Quote from: quaxo on December 17, 2009, 08:38:22 AM

I have just downloaded the latest ones to try, (I am on dial up) heheh.

I have however twice today had it where my machine will get to a point where nothing will open, you can double click the icon, it won't budge. You can open task manager, but then once you close it the whole machine sort of goes into a state of vegetation...the mouse moves, icons highlight. nobody's home. I might just have to cut my losses, save what game saves I can, and reformat.Yeah, starting to sound like more than the video driver acting up. You run a full scan on your system lately? Thanks for your help Quaxxo, I cut my losses after I found lots and lots of viruses after a LAN party.

Seems to be OK now must have been a corrupt file or something

Hmm okay, It surely can't be a hardware fault then? Because after the reformat, it hasn't happened since, no blue Screens, no crashes, its been perfect. No, not a hardware fault otherwise you'd still be having it. No amount of formatting will fix that. I was, as I said, most likely a file or driver issue from that LAN party. Pardon the analogy, but GOING to a LAN party is like going to an orgy... It may be fun, but you never know what others are bringing in or what you're walking out with if your protection fails.

Solve : DOS Games?

Answer»

At the time I got my first computer, the current operating system was Windows 3.11 and that is what I had on my DX66MHz, 486 computer, 90mb hard drive with 12mb of RAM and Windows 95 was about a month from being released. This year and the next few years were the heyday of DOS games. There were some REALLY good games that came out around that time. We played Sim City 2000, Xcom, Atrain, Wolfenstein, Civilization I, but I think the best DOS game I ever played was Lords of the Realm II and the Siege Pack.
If you have played DOS games and have found some really good games, would you please list them here?
I think Windows 95 played DOS games better than any other OS so I'm going to look around for a 486 to put 95 on just for a DOS game computer. You can use DosBox which is what I use on my Vista laptop.

I play:
Moonstone
Elite: frontiers
Krondor the betrayal
Wings
Dreamweb
Cannon fodder

Yes just make sure you read up on how to use it. I have DOSbox 0.72, does anyone know if I can find Galaga, to play on my DOSbox?Try a google search for galaga.

You can also get RobyDOSbox which adds a graphical front end to dosbox.

Some great dos game...

XCOM Apocolypse
Steel Panthers series

There's quite a few decent sims from that era too like Apache Longbow 1 & 2, EF2000 etc.I don't know if win95 can play dos games the best. For my dos games i use win 98 for i can import them using a usb flash drive. I usally play DOOM or DOOM 2 for g oodness sake- their DOS games, pure DOS RUNS DOS game's better then ANY, and I mean ANY version of DOS running under ANY version of windows.

Running DOS games under any version of windows is like strangling a cat. Even in the luckiest case where you put it in it's place the first time and it works, you never know when you'll get bitten in the *censored* and have to do it all over again.

hehe Wow! Another DOS games thread.

My recommendations:
  • Space Quest series (ESPECIALLY 4 (w\ voiceovers) & 5, SQ6 was crap).
  • King's Quest series (if you're more into fantasy than sci-fi)
  • Mechwarrior II (the original DOS version, not the Windows version made later that sucked)
  • Phantasmagoria (this will actually run on WindowsXP, but runs better in DOS, great game)
  • The 7th GUEST (one of my favorite games ever, can be found on eBay for less than $10)
  • X-Com: Apocolypse (excellent tactical strategy game)
  • Duke Nukem 3D (Come get some!)
  • Warcraft II & Beyond the Dark Portal expansion
  • Command & Conquer (the original, also available for Windows in the C&C The First Decade boxset)

I could go on and on, but that's enough for now...The Elder Scrolls : Dagger Fall ... it's free to download from ElderScrolls SITE

Solve : Halo 2 causing windows 7 to crash?

Answer»

Hello guys,

I just have my new windows 7 laptop (well actually, I have it for 2 weeks now or so) and I installed a few games and other programs on it. Suddenly, my windows 7 started to crash randomly at any moment. Even when I was only working on Microsoft Word, scrolling up or down could cause a crash. At FIRST, I thought it was cause I was running to many programs at the same time, but then it even crashed when I just wanted to make connection to the internet.

I RETURNED to the story, and they told me to try to recover the laptop, and install the programs 1 by 1 to see what could be causing this. The programs or the beautiful laptop itself?

I did the recovery, and I noticed Halo 2 was causing all these crashes. The strange thing is, it's the newest game I have, the others are way older, like AoK, Starcraft, AoM, Halo 1 and they run fine! (Except for a few graphic bugs which I have a temporarily fix for). Trying to run Halo 2 in compatibilitymode doesn't make any change. As soon as it's installed on the laptop, it causes random crashes. Result: I can't play Halo 2 anymore.

Normally, my laptop is supposed to run Halo 2 without problems, Here's the system thingies of my laptop

Hmm, looks like that is not all. here's some more:

Windows 7 home premium
Model: ASUS Notebook k70AC/K51AC/K70AB/K51AB series
Classification: 4.2 Windows prestation index
Processor= AMD Athlon(tm) X2 Dual-Core QL-65 2.10 Ghz
RAM: 4.00
System: 64 bitscontrollersystem

I'm Belgian and my laptop is in that language to, so sorry if I translated some words wrong.

Does anyone know why Halo 2 causes the crashes and what could be done about it, rather then buying a new laptop or don't play Halo 2? Cause I don't WANT either of that to happen

Thanks in advance.

What is the graphics card?

Do you think it could be a hardware issue?
If so, try a program called 3dmax, or maybe rivatuner and taskmanager(on your windows) you can just google and get the free downloads for themtry compatibility mode Quote

So, no.

Where can I find my graphic card?

-> Video ATI Radeon HD 4570Check if you are using the right PC display COLORS, some games will crash without the right colors. Is this a legit version of Halo 2?Halo 2 is a legal version, not downloaded. And the problem is not the game, it's my laptop. I can play the game without problems, it just causes my laptop to crash at any moment possible. Even when I just scroll up in word.what does the crash look like, is it a blue screen? or does the screen simply flash white then shut off?So are you saying that having the game installed is causing your comp to crash?Yes. It only starts to crash at random times AFTER the game is installed. The game itself works fine though. If you uninstall the game do you still get the crashes?

Solve : OpenGL??

Answer»

I have the original quake from LONG ago and I wanted to install it on my pc. On the cover it says WORKS with DOS 5.0 or higher and windows 95/97. Now when I put the disc in the cdrom drive all it does is open windows media player and play the music tracks. No matter how I try to open it. Someone said on amazon.com that you need to use OpenGL to install and play the game. Is that right? He said that will make it compatible with any OS. No, that's not necessarily correct.

The CD-ROM of the original quake contains the DOS version. this will NOT run- (at least, not easily) on any OS after windows 98/ME.

That being said, however, there are a number of "ports" of the quake SOURCE to various other platforms; this may be what the person was referring to.

a good, basic Windows Port I like is fitzquake. This should work on any OpenGL equipped PC (pretty much any PC with a video card newer then around 10 or so years).

If you have a high-end machine, you can actually get a number of "improved" engines, that also support high-resolution textures.
darkplaces is a popular one.
Joequake is one of the ones I've been using.
Qrack is another excellent one too.

Remember though you aren't limited to just using one of these; the only thing that these programs need from your CD are a few PAK FILES, which essentially CONTAIN the game level data and resources. They don't all have installers, so you might need to manually unzip them and copy the PAK file (PAK1.pak, if memory SERVES) from your CD-ROM to an "ID1" folder within the folder you unzip the port to.I have a very basic PC. Don't ask me specifics, I wont be able to tell you. I know its only about a year old or less. Basic home PC. So could you be please be so kind as to walk me through how I get this game to work please? What are the first few steps?Actually I got it to install!!! You have to go into DOS and select the drive E: then type INSTALL and hit enter. Only problem is that stupid error message about the full screen cannot be supported. WHat does that mean?

Solve : Elf Bowling bass_fx error?

Answer»

I'm not even sure if i'm in the right place.

I have a game Elf Bowling 7 the last insult. Worked fine for years all of sudden
it quit working, don't know when, don't know why.

It gives a bass_fx.dll error saying it's corrupt, wrong version, or missing, error 998.

I contacted oberon media who gave me a NEW download file and register key,i did all that but still have the same error. I looked in the files, and there is a bass_fx.dll of the right size in the folder.

I don't know anything about these files, and i don't know if it's missing from somewhere else or what.

any ideas or thoughts or help would be appreciated.

Thanks. I really don't know what's causing this but you could USE Revo to remove every thing from the game and then try to reinstall it, I suggest you backup your saved data FIRST.

Other then that I can only suggest you do a full system scan for virus, I don't think you will find anything but I never had any errors like that. You MIGHT try here
http://www.jobnik.org/thanks, i'll look in to both things. So far i don't think it's a virus, i run multiple scans all the time and have no issues but i'll look again.

Thanks. Hi again, i'm still working on those previous items.

I'm wondering if this could be a registry thing? I never work with the registry
except when i use CC cleaner.

If it could be a registry thing is there any program out there which is GOOD enough
to detect and fix?

Just asking. thanks. Thanks for all the assistance. I used REVO to uninstall and reinstalled the game but same error persists. I have taken the issue to jobnik as suggested.

Thanks again, i guess you can close this.

Just THOUGHT of this. You EVER tried getting your games on steam? I still have old games like tf2 and HALF life 2 that I normally would've just lost if steam DIDNT ALLOW me to re-install them.

Solve : Fable like game??

Answer»

heh, only game I play on-line is Quake 2. yeah, that one, the old one from 1996.

It's NICE though because we don't have to DEAL with Noobs, since they are all off playing fable and Cod ...

makes the game VERY tense and WELL matched though.I play Quake 3 online, it's a funny game and yea you don't see those noobs who just play WEIRD. Theres nothing wrong with liking old games, my two favorite games that I play are Shinobi(sega Gen) and rayman(nintendo64). So what if there old there still fun. Diablo 2 FTW

If he did download the game this site would not support it, and I would guess that something was CORRUPTED when you installed the game. It's ether some dirt or some serous scratch on your CD, try cleaning it and reinstall the game.Quote from: Frejoh466 on December 26, 2009, 04:06:31 AM
If he did download the game this site would not support it,

This is not exactly true. There are plenty of legitimate sites that you can down load full legitimate versions of games from.Well in this case I he had downloaded illegal and that what I was pointing at.Quote from: Frejoh466 on December 28, 2009, 11:22:22 AM

Well the OP never even SAID that the game was downloaded. You know what, I will not argue whit you any more, most of the people know what I was trying to say.be cool guys... let's just be honest here so we could assist further. THINK thats fair enough, right. we should respect each OTHERS claim and should go on.

Solve : Empire earth?

Answer»

Anyone know how to get Empire Earth to work on XP?Well you put in the CD in to your CD-ROM READER then you press install and follow the proses and there you have it, how to install Empire Earth to Windows XPpcjoseph,
If it's a legitimate copy of the game and fully patched after installation, it should work just fine under XP. Can you be more specific as to what issues you are having when you try to RUN the game? Otherwise, there's nothing we can do to HELP you.

Frejoh,
Don't make uncalled for comments that insult the intelligence of visitors. If you feel the need to be rude, please do it somewhere else.Sorry quaxo

I didn't try to be rude, and I didn't insult his intelligence, he might not know how to install Empire Earth I don't know, and he might never installed a game before, I had to learn my parents how to use the internet becuase they didn't know. And he did just say that he wanted to know how to install Empire Earth to XP, and well now he know how to install it.He said work on XP, not install. There are KNOWN issues with Empire Earth crashing on XP, a simple GOOGLE search would tell you that, and they're addressed in patches.I install the game and when I try to load it, it does nothing, just hangs forever. Ive tried it on 3 different machines that run xp and I get the same thing. Ive looked all over for solutions online and I have not found one that works. When I get home I'll see if there is a specific error log but I cant remember seeing one. Its the Platinum version, or something like that, so its a version that is completely patched. It is legit.

And Frejoh466, you came across as a jerk whether you ment to or not. You seriously think I dont know how to load a game. Ive been using computers since the Atari 800XL.
joseph you've tried it with other systems. 3 to be exact. you might try replacing the copy you have there. i have played Empire Earth II Platinum Edition. I had no problems with it. Its does not even require that much system resources. might be a defective copy. some copy glitch or something. I experienced that before with Arkham Asylum. I was so pissed off got to go back and forth replacing the copy.

You WOULD be looking for a torrent. And yes, those are illegal and OFTEN contain viruses and other problems.
so its not really worth the troubleQuote from: Juice217 on December 10, 2009, 07:13:01 AM

Solve : The Sims 3 System Requirements?

Answer»

hi i just got a Sims 3 game for my computer but im fairly sure that my computer isnt capable to use the game because of its lack of system requirements! my ram is pretty badsince i only have 512mb so i know that i need to get a stick put in. But i dont know whether i have a VIDEO card or not.. this i what i have : ATI RADEON XPRESS 1100 SERIES
also my CPU is hard to understand and i dont know if its good to go with the game: Intel(R) Celeron(R) D CPU 3.33GHz

please help meee I think it should be able to play it, but double check here
http://cyri.systemrequirementslab.com/srtest/
I also just CHECKED the requirments, and it looks as if you should be able to play it. The only thing would be your ram, but I think you will be fine. It should also say you need an ati 9500 or HIGHER, but yours is better then this, I thinkoh okay thank gawd for that!
i used the link that u gave me, and for the video card all the features are TICKED otherthan that video card itself :S
also the cpu didnt get ticked either :S
The Sims™ 3 Minimum Hardware Requirements

* 2.0 GHz P4 processor or equivalent
* 1 GB RAM
* 128 MB Video Card with support for Pixel Shader 2.0
* The latest version of DirectX 9.0c
* Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2
* At least 6.1 GB of hard drive space with at least 1 GB of additional space for custom content and saved games

FOR WINDOWS VISTA

* 1.5 GB RAM
* 128 MB Video Card with support for Pixel Shader 2.0

compare it with ursI think he used the link computeruler gave him and he already know if he can play the game, also he did respond that he now know if he can play the game. So your system speck was not needed
