Solve : NFS ProStreet?

Answer»

when I get to end of the race the game tallies up the points & cash and sends it to the leaderboard and log info, then you click on the continue button but noting happens the game doesn't proceed to the next screen. I have to Ctrl-Alt-Delete to get out of the game. On the desktop screen there is a DOS window for the game and the last line says.

Solve : Game freezes with vertical green and purple lines ???

Answer»

Hey .. I've had this problem for a while and I tried the best I can on my own to solve it .. but I really couldn't .. so I need some help .
When I play a game .. after a while it completely locks up my computer .... and I see vertical purple and green LINES covering the screen ... and I have to RESTART .
This happens with games like BATMAN Arkham Asylum and Tales of monkey island .. and as you can see these two games couldn't be more different from each other ( in terms of graphics and SYSTEM requirements I mean ) . so I think the problem isn't my VGA card ... so does anyone have any thoughts about this .
My system specs are : VGA card Nvidia 9600 GT .
4 GB RAM
Core 2 Duo 2.8GHZ processor.
Windows & operating system .

Thanks for your help in advance .

Actually, that's usually a sign of a video problem.

Some things to check:
1. Make sure the video card is securely seated in the slot.*
2. Make sure both ends of the video cable are securely connected.*
3. Make sure the video card's fan and heat sink(s) are clear of DUST.**
4. Check for dust build-up on other components while you're at it.**
5. Check your computer temperatures with a program like Speedfan.
6. If you have on-board video, switch to it and see if the same thing occurs.
7. If possibly, try your video card in another computer, or try another video card in yours.*

* Unplug the computer before doing this.
** Unplug the computer before doing this. Use a can of compressed air for cleaning. Do not vacuum!
Last time I saw vertical purple and green lines covering the screen it was when my graphic card did not get enough whit power to keep the fan spinning, and seconds later I was in a store buying a new graphic card and more power supply.

So make sure it's not to hot in there and check for dust and crap in your computer. Check the list what quaxo posted and see if it worksit seems that its a complete video card problem
i had the same problem

ive changed the video card now

Solve : Star Wars Battlefront - Map Maker?

Answer»

Wondering if anyone has used the Map Maker(ZeroEditor) that was RELEASED by LucasArts for SWBF 1.

I've downloaded it and read thru the documentation, but after I START ZeroEdit, it crashes.

I've read thru other people's POSTS via Google, and seems that It may be a HARDWARE issue(ZeroEdit requires a GFX card with TnL Capability), this isn't a problem WHENEVER I run SWBF.

Has anyone else dealt with this before?

Solve : Finding out an IP address from Facebook discussion board?

Answer»

Hi
I USE an application running under Facebook - it has a DISCUSSION board, and a couple of people often 'threaten' other posters on this board by displaying an IP ADDRESS and saying something LIKE "I know where you are!!"
By checking this IP address I realise that it is in fact the IP address of the 'threatened' poster's ISP and that person could therefore be 1 of millions using that ISP and so the 'threatener' does not know where the other person is at all - or at least they MAY know a certain geographical area but no more.
Can any one tell me how they are able to get this IP address? I assume they are PINGing a URL - but which one?
it happened with me many times . but for safety just change(renew) the ip address from the dos (disk operating system)....

Solve : pixel shader?

Answer» http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=188-04E40&cat=VCD

Does the card in the link support pixel shader 2.0? It says Full Microsoft DirectX 10 Shader Model 4.0 Support

Is "pixel shader" support a generic term for the technology?

I've got a game that requires "shader module 2.0" or higher and I want a cheap card.. I don't want to spend too much UPGRADING this eMachines computer..Please see the chart here: pixel shader

Since the card is Shader Model 4.0 and the game only requires 2.0, it would run.well thx

It just occurred to me that "shader module 4.0" DirectX supersedes "module 2.0"

I guess I'm in the clear if I get that cheap card

Anyone know how to use 3D Analyze?

Instead of getting that card, maybe I can emulate the video card using 3D Analyze.

I've tried a few suggestions on what BOXES to check while running the game executable, but I always the error:

"Error while injecting dll into target process"Emulating PS 2.0?? Highly doubt you can, even if you did...the game would run like junk.

The only way you can win is if you buy an actual card. Well I actually did buy that card I mentioned, but the one I bought has DVI-I built into it.. It hasn't arrived yet, but hopefully by Christmas it will be here.

I had to buy a 20 - 24 pin adapter for the POWER supply that eMachines skimped on, to supply the 12 volts to the card that it requires.. It's a RELATIVELY low-wattage card and the psu in my machine has room for the required amerage draw on the 12 volt rail.

Lol

I think I'll add that to my own vocabulary and use it from now on

Dual DVI cards usually do come with an adapter from DVI - > VGA yes, or in my case, two! one for DVI -> HDMI and one for DVI -> VGA.Adapter? OH! you mean a converta-ma-jig. heh

I've heard of watcha-ma-call-its

and dilli-ma-jiggers

but converta-ma-jig

is a new one Got the video card in the mail just now .. I'm now the proud owner of an ATI Radeon x700 Pro..

I'm a little disappointed because at first glance, I could notice smudges on the heat sink/fan, and some dirty spots on other places... It's obviously used.. Next time I will read the fine print.... lesson learned..

It seems to work good though, so far..

I'm a little annoyed that the Fed X guy set it down by our front door, knocked and took off, I could see him walking away... Anyone could run off with it and no body would ever know...

I'm willing to bet that Fed X has had many complaints because of this kind of thing..

Actually it just occurred to me that, I don't need the 20 - 24 pin adapter. I should have thought it through more before I ordered it..

My psu allows 15 amps. on the 12 volt rail. 5.4 max. will be used by the cpu.. .4 max. will be used by my fan moters, DVD/HDD moters will use 2.56 max.. 6.25 max. will be used by the video card... Total-14.61, assuming each device will draw maximum power, which I doubt will happen.. The thing is that each of those voltages are drawn off totally SEPARATE psu connectors, except for the fans that draw power from the board. The cpu has it's own 12 volt connector and the SATA drives have their own connectors leaving the 12 pin on the MAIN connector totally free to draw 6.4 amps for the card + .4 amps. for the fans... The 20 pin MAIN connector is using the "HCS" standard terminals which would allow 9 amps total across the 12 volt pin... The whole point of delivering power over over multiple pins is to prevent the terminals from melting, which is why some high wattage PCIe cards have power connectors on them, which balances the required amperage draw over multiple pins...

Solve : High Ping?

Answer»

This problem has been with me for months, through many different routers, and I'm at my wits end. After it BECAME obvious my ISP have no idea what's causing it, I decided to look for outside help so hopefully you guys know what to do.

I like to game A LOT, but on almost all of the games I play, I am getting ping that is higher than it should be. After hours and hours of torture talking to my ISP SUPPORT, I have determined that it's not caused by my internet speed (40mbps), my router or modem (it was high even while being directly connected to my modem), or firewall (I took it down, nothing changed). I spoke to someone from Geek Squad and was told it was the way which Road Runner sends you your connection and it cannot be FIXED, I hope he's wrong What areas are you playing in, if you are in the us and you play in euro servers, there will be problems. The only thing I could THINK off would be this,

You might need to open a port, see here http://portforward.com/ but you don't get the site you can search on google and youtube how to open a port for your router. The port for games can be much confusing, I suggest you go to there forum and look or ask for the right port.

Do a look here http://www.speedtest.net/ to really see how much you get, your ISP can say you should get 40mbps but you might get less then that.

Close all PROGRAM that are using internet like Skype, MSN, Xfire and so on.

And sometimes the internet might be very slow due to your ISP, some days I can't even do a thing online, to open a page takes 10min. So it could be your ISP fault, or it might even be your computer. Try it whit a other computer and see if it works better.

There ain't really a good way to see what's wrong, it could be if you have way to slow internet connection, it could even be a virus that is causing this, but try what I said and see if anything works.

Solve : FF7 PC?

Answer»

..just ordered Final Fantasy 7 for the PC, from eBay 53 bucks total

not bad! The seller appears to have a good rep too

can't wait The hardware requirements for the game are not extreme at all so my little eMachine computer will handle it fine.. Although I am getty ready to build my first gaming system.

want to know anything about this game? have any issues with computers? or are you just braggingbragging

I saw some relatively expensive ones. One was still in the original pachaging.. $ 150

No bigge, just as long as I can play it, me is happy$150 for FF7!!!!

The one I bought was 53 DOLLARS..

The one that costs 150 dollars is apparently in the original packaging..

Yes I love the game... I probably would have paid 150 for that other one, if I had no other alternatives.. SNES games have some really vast price differences. I bought just the cartridge for Chrono-Trigger and it ran me around 80 dollars. New in box can fetch over 300 or 400 (!).

And yet I bought a new, still shrink-wrapped copy of F-zero and it was 8 dollars. lol.

interesting point there... F-Zero rocks.. I can't remember if I beat the King cup race tracks on highest difficulty Some of those levels are pretty *censored* hard!

I think FF7 is considered a classic/collectible which is why it's expensive in some cases..

Yeah, all the Final Fantasy games can fetch high prices, regardless of the system. It's kind of funny in a way; Square sells them for a reasonable price, and a few years later there are people making huge profits off it- the demand GOES up, the supply goes down, and suddenly you have people paying 200+ for a SNES game.

regarding F-zero, I beat queen cup recently on advanced again... and it stated to try "master difficulty" which I would have, but it wasn't there . I'm not certain if I beat King cup on advanced, though. I think I did, but it MIGHT have been standard.I downloaded almost all the songs in the FF7 soundtrack, converted them to .wav files and made an audio CD

Some of the songs are soothing..

If there's a such thing as a FF7 nerd, I am one of them

edit: what really cool is playing the CDs with Windows Media Player and getting lost in the array of colors and visual effects on the screen Quote from: EEVIAC on December 17, 2009, 04:43:31 PM

Need more info, like computer specs and the specific problem you're having with it.

Both BF 1942 and Vietnam had issues on Vista. Most of them have been addressed and solutions found, but can't point you in the right direction with such little information.

Also, if you search Google for your specific problem, you'll find tons of sources that tell you how to fix them. Like I said, a lot of these issues have been brought up, solved, and DOCUMENTED SOMEWHERE on the web.and I'm wondering if this is just a compatibility issue but like quaxo said, we're just guessing if you don't tell us exactly what's GOING on that prevents you from running battlefield Vietnam on your PC.

ya im pretty sure xfire does that........Just to help the OP, I believe they are looking for a program to help distribute their OWN game's patches/updates.

You might have to program your own as far as updating is concerned, or release update patches on your own website.

Solve : My computer crashes with select games?

Answer»

Around 2003, my dad made me a custom-built gaming computer. It seemed to have a lot of bells and whistles, but as soon as I tried to RUN my copy of Sims 2, it crashed. The screen became distorted, the sound cuts, and the only way to remedy the dilemma was to restart the computer. Since then, I have bought a numerous amount of games, and it seems as if my computer PICKS which games it likes and dislikes. It will run Age of Empires III

Solve : paper mario?

Answer»

Anyone know where to get "Paper Mario" for a pc? I know that you can get it for Project 64, but are there any versions that run on a pc without an emulator? No version is released without using emulator...Reason I ask is because I try to avoid downloading copyrighted rom images. Even if you own the actuall cartridge it's still considered piracy by downloading them. And what about Project 64? Do you have to own an actuall NINTENDO 64 before you're allowed to use Project 64? From what I understand, even using the emulator is against the eula since you're using the bios code in a way it was not intended for, unless I'm mistaken.

Anyone care to shed some light on these issues? I'd like to play with proj. 64 and use paper mario with it, but if I'm taking away from someones hard work, I would rather not.Emulators are legal; the functions of all the chips on the N64/SNES/NES mainboards were reverse engineered by enthusiasts; same with common chips on their cartridges. there is no duplication of BIOS code because their is no BIOS code; it's almost all exclusively hardware interaction that is being emulated. (otherwise, a BIOS image would be required too, like with the Playstation)

The legal issue is with the ROM content; the actual data is copyright by Nintendo, who, by the way, has NEVER released ANY of their games for another platform near as I can tell- its pretty evident why- if it runs on something other then a Nintendo console it will drive down sales of the Nintendo console it would have run at.

Lastly: there is no EULA to any Console game. The issue is limited strictly to breaking copyright law.

Many people claim that it is legal to have the dumped ROM image if you own the actual game; this logic is a bit more reasonable. I can't remember the actual legal standing of it, though.

Oh, and that whole "you can keep a ROM of a game you don't own for 24 HOURS" thing is complete rubbish.Quote from: BC_Programmer on December 02, 2009, 02:55:55 AM

Oh, and that whole "you can keep a ROM of a game you don't own for 24 hours" thing is complete rubbish.

This is funny. I ran across a rom website once where they emphasized that you cannot keep the game on your hard drive for over 24 hours, if you don't own the real one. It didn't make any sense then, either.just download the ROM, you don't have to feel guilty, nintendo doesn't earn money of it anyway anymoreQuote from: robin1232 on December 04, 2009, 02:39:09 PM
just download the ROM, you don't have to feel guilty, Nintendo doesn't earn money of it anyway anymore

According to this, I'd say your assessment might be off. And if Nintendo doesn't make any money from the software anymore, doesn't NECESSARILY give rights to distribute or download their copyrighted software..Nintendo has not until recently specified what "authorized hardware" really meant. ADDITIONALLY, for the most part emulation stayed at least one generation behind, and even that was emulated poorly at least until the next generation of consoles. That doesn't appear to be the case, since Dolphin is now capable of running Wii games in a somewhat limited fashion.

Personally, I think that having emulators, as well as ROMs, is an important "future-proofing" of the games; since Nintendo no longer produces SNES or NES consoles, they will eventually stop working, but thankfully, there are a LOT of documents written about it's internal workings as well as Emulators written that demonstrate those particular documents.

The important thing to remember- At least up to (but not always including, I'll get to that) the gamecube, is that the way emulators come about is done so in a perfectly legal fashion. Enthusiasts take APART their consoles and examine particular chips, determining what outputs result for various inputs, etc etc. these discoveries are documented, and eventually the whole board, or a necessary portion of the whole board, can be emulated. the emulator, in effect, is just that; the creators had no internal documented from Nintendo and did not violate anything (well, except their warranty, ) to create it.

The gamecube, however, can be a different story. Unlike Nintendo's previous exploits, which used game paks that did all the work, the gamecube has a BIOS. the important point, at least from an emulation standpoint, is that even though the BIOS code is generally necessary to run games, it is a software component that is copyright by Nintendo. It would be perfectly legal for the emulator writers to try to create their own version of the BIOS, but that would be difficult. the Common solution is to use a "image" of the BIOS code itself.

For the NES and SNES cartridges, which comprised of actual circuit boards in the game pak, it was only the copyright ROM code within the cartridge- and not the actual controller and memory bank switch (NES mappers) chips. these chips had to be emulated by the emulator as well, and their functions and particulars were extracted in the same way that the chips on the system board were.

Basically; I can understand the issues around the ROMs, but the emulators themselves are produced, essentially, bu people taking apart something that belongs to them and documented what they find. Nintendo has no say regarding what people can and cannot do with the system once they bought it.

Then if that don't work re-install the game.
If that don't work try re-installing your video card drivers.

Sometimes crucial files get corrupted and re-installation can often sort it, and at very least it eliminates those possibilities. Good luck. The game has been installed THREE times. Directx I have reinstalled twice. I have no video card. The chipset is up to date according to the computer. What next?Do a search for known issues related to the game and your graphics chip. Onboard graphics are not as supported when it come to gaming unfortunatly. There may be a patch tho, but I thnk your chip might not be supported even tho it meets the minimum requirements. * Compatible with DirectX 9.0c a sound card

No on-board card that I'm aware of even comes CLOSE to a Geforce 6600 or Radeon x1600; except maybe a few specialty BOARDS that implement Nvidia or AMD chipsets with Geforce or Radeon on-board, but even in that case their performance is no match for a graphics card of the same model. Thanks much for your time. I thought that my chip SET was good to go, it is the Intel 31. I will have to get a card or play it on one of the other computers that have a better card, Ge Force 8400. Thank you much for your time. I feel so foolish.a computer without graphics card won't run any new games, try looking on http://www.canyourunit.com to see if you meet the system requirementsYeah, those Intel graphics chipsets are alright for everyday computing, like surfing the web, watching movies, creating documents, etc. but when it comes to games (especially 3D games) they're almost useless. They don't support shader 3.0, which often results in the game crashing when trying to START it. There's nothing wrong with your hardware, it just can't handle this game.

Solve : Quake 4 - Please Help?

Answer»

I just recently bought a new laptop, an Asus G72 gaming laptop, and I wanted to install Quake 4. I've had the GAME since it was new, but NONE of the computers I've ever had could handle it. So I went to install it today and right after I put the disc in the laptop it game me an error that only said "Library Not Registered". Every other game I installed today had no problems installing, and any other COMPUTER I tried to install Quake 4 on had trouble installing it, just this one. Does anybody know what I'm supposed to do? try these things:
1. disable UAC (if you have WINDOWS 7 or vista, you should do this anyway, it also blocked my installer for the crysis sandbox and my antivirus)
2. buy the game if you have it illegallyQuote from: robin1232 on December 04, 2009, 02:41:26 PM

1. disable UAC (if you have windows 7 or vista, you should do this anyway, it also blocked my installer for the crysis sandbox and my antivirus)
disregard this. USE Run As Administrator for the setup program instead.

Solve : borderlands constantly crashing?

Answer»

as stated in title, it constantly crashes. no specific events make it crash, it just does it randomly. tried turning down the graphics settings, which doesn't HELP. attached is a screencap of the error i get most of the time. it varies somewhat, though.

[SAVING space, attachment deleted by admin]check for patches
i believe i've found the solution:

http://www.gamingnewslink.com/2009/10/26/fixes-for-borderlands-crashes-bugs-freezes-sound-and-install-errors/

i guess borderlands doesn't LIKE some multi-core processors (mine being one of them, of course). solution would be to run the game on one core. tried it for about an hour, no crashes or anything.

Or you can go where every BODY else go, http://gbxforums.gearboxsoftware.com/forumdisplay.php?f=93

Solve : Good old crapy games??

Answer»

Is there anyone who know any good game for Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator 500? Dungeon keepers 2 is my favourite game but the shadow and some texture look weird, but it is playable but nothing I want to play whit. not even Serious Sam or TRIBES 2 works. I will try Diablo when I find out how to transform a CD in to a USB.

So DOSE anyone know any good old games who will work whit Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator 500?I'm using Vista. But sometimes with old games, you can go to properties, and check, 'run with 256 colors' which is what the old crappy games used. That might help. That would be DirectX 7 & 8 territory. There are a lot of good games you could try at that level.

Are you using a netbook with an atom proc. Intel offers a support page for getting the most out of these chips and has fixes for many issues. http://www.intel.com/support/ (you might have to hunt around a bit)

Try these...

*Fallout 1 & 2.
*XCOM Apocolypse. Awsome.
*Balders Gate & Icewind Dale series. Excellent RPG 10/10
*Operation Flashpoint. Might be a push. Original only, the expansions might bog your sys down.
*Sacred. Another RPG like Diablo 2.
*Earth 2150. Sci Fi RTS. V Good.
*The Sims 1.
*Close Combat series. RTS WW2
*Hearts of Iron 1 & 2.
*SUDDEN Strike series RTS WW2

Man I could go on all day about the classic not crappy DX7 & 8 games. There's hundreds. Hope this helps a little.

I just have to ask, what dose that mean?

I ask for games that run whit the worst graphic card you can think off (but still a good game). If I want to play hardcore games I would just play them on my main, I play on the highest graphic whit 60 FPS+

EDIT:
btw it's a aspire one AO531hAll of the games listed above are quite old and should run on your netbook.

Balders Gate and Icewind Dale ran on 200mhz machines and XCOM ran on a i486. Same deal with Fallout 1 & 2, pentium 200mhz was all it needed.
Operation Flashpoint was probably the highest speced game I recommend and that ran on like a 500mhz machine so dont worry they arent cutting edge by any means. They are decent and they should run on your netbook, but if you want crapier try space invaders & pacman. Also I think what BatchFileCommand was trying to do was kindly offer you a possible fix for your Dungeon Keeper game.
That make sense. but I think it would be better to change it to start as Win98/95 and then disable shadows. I would have used CanYouRunIt.com but they remove all of the old games...

And thanks for the game list there Gremlin Yeah I AGREE, runinng in compatability mode can help. Theres an option to force 256 color in there too.

http://www.homeoftheunderdogs.com/ is a great place for older pc games that are now abandonware.

Good luck with your ultra mobile gaming.win95 98 compatibility mode is essentially useless for games since it causes a 80% increase in CPU usage for the process as API calls are intercepted and forced to "behave" as win9x would. compatibility mode should ONLY be used for APPLICATION programs that will not run otherwise. In my experience games that people propose should be run with compatibility mode either have newer source ports that run on modern operating systems or patches that will allow them to run (either official or unofficial). Examples of the former are games such as Doom, Quake, Quake 2 and Duke 3d; an example of the latter is Need For Speed High Stakes. (by the way those also happen to be game suggestions ) Also, I've found that a good portion of games recommended to run in compat mode will run just fine without it.

"The worst graphics card you can think of" for me, would probably be an 8-bit MDA adapter... but that was obviously not what you meant,

I used to have to play the above games on a ATI 3d Rage Pro Turbo (8MB VRAM)- it didn't support OpenGL, so I had to play with software at something like 320x240. (I think duke3d managed to get up to 640x480)Yes I agree with BC_programmer. If the game works without it don't worry about usin it, obviously. Of all the games Ive tried only 2 have worked with it. Need for Speed Porche challenge didnt work and then did with compatability mode. Its worth a try but don't hold too much hope. Can't remember the other game that worked under it. So yeah it's helpful for about 2% of the games (in my experience). Not great but it was good when it let me play NFS.Porsche Unleashed/Porsche Challenge I think had a patch that allowed it to work just fine for me in WinXP, but I haven't installed it on either Vista or 7. It did have blurry text which was kind of annoying but workable.

High-stakes is another one I see people recommend using the compatibility option for, but it is really quite unnecessary, since there are some pretty neat patches packs for it that fix a lot of issues. And it goes slow as molasses with the option enabled, too 2%... Most games I play need to run as 98/95 like Settlers 4 (but can't play it whit the new Navidia card) Thief, Fallout tactics, it work whit the regular but it will go so much better if I set it as 98/95.

Then I have over 500 games and I'm sure some of the games must have 98 to work too (Most of them are old games)

Solve : gameboomers DL?

Answer»

i downloaded a game called "once upon a time" from the gameboomers site as a zip
file containing the game and a PDF manual. there was no desktop ICON, so i have no idea how to get to the game to play it. there was a button to CLICK that said "new game" which i clicked on and the download started again. i cancelled it. now what??It sounds like you unziped the file, did you unzip the file, if so where did you unzip it to. That is where your icon will be.
Did you run a setup. If you can give a bit more info that would be good.i have no clue about "zipped" files. i don't know whether i unzipped it or not. i doubt it.
i clicked on a button that said "download this game" it also said it was a zip file with the game and a PDF manual. (i don't know what THAT is either). so, anyway, the machine went through the download process for the 77 MB (?) game. when it finished, i went looking for the game and it was nowhere. i checked the add/remove in the control panel,, and it wasn't there, either. i've sort of decided that THAT particular game site is just too complicated for me to enjoy. so....thank you for your interest in my problem, but i will just leave gameboomers aloneIt's not all that complex and you would benefit from knowing about ziped content. Look in your download folder of do a windows search for the file. You then need to unzip the file. Try RIGHT CLICKING on it and look for an option to extract files or similiar. Make sure you specify the destination. The game will extract and you may then have to run the setup or it will run from its folder.
If you dont have an unziper, you should it's built into XP, you can download one, winzip or winrar are ok.
GO on give it a go! Whoa !!! got it !!! thank you so much. !!!!

Solve : plz delete?

Computer games are everywhere nowdays, with many styles and features it is quite hard to generalize it all. so i have taken an attempt to do so:

Many of the first computer games were to the point with a single objective to retrieve an object or something of that sort. these games usually never seemed to end and got quite boring as TIME progressed.

The next generation of computer games offered RPGs (role playing games) like "Kings Quest" or other TITLES. medieval themed games were popular at the time too. graphics remained the same as the OLD generation with a few exceptions.

The third GENRATION featured games with life like graphics and many of the genres we know today. this generation produced many, many games that would take me a long time to list them all. this generation was home to "Stronghold", many Star Wars Games.

The present generation has been one of the longest and sacrificed game features for better graphics and control. This generation is still building so theres not much to say...

If I missed anything please tell me so i can correct the mistake.Well your not actually asking a question and if you think that you can put computer games from beginning to end in just three and a bit generations..

That's why NOBODY has called you yet to make the definitive gigantic-us games encyclopaedia.Yeah, that just seems like a very limited view on computer games. Honestly, it's not even close to the truth. Is this for homework?that was a pretty bad generalization so i ask the mighty god-like moderators to delete this

Solve : Reinstallation Error?

Answer»

Hi, I have a game CALLED SWGB (StarWars Galactic Battlegrounds) i installed it on a HP computer with windows 98. I had the game on the computer for many years and even started to AI script for it (following under strict rules so i don't screw up). one DAY the game wasn't functioning properly so i decided to reinstall it. doing so, i uninstalled it. when i tried to reinstall the game the menu only gave me the option to uninstall the game, and when i ran the setup the PROCESS would speed through and give me a message stating "maintenance is complete". I don't know what to do. I tried to use REGEDIT, but that did nothing.
So what should I do?Yeah Ive had this before. You can try a few things and you are on the right track. Try running a registry CLEANER like Glary Registry Repair. Sometimes you can manually run the setup again from the cd instead of using the autoplay menu and that can bypass your prob too. (Hope that makes sense) Browse the cd files and look for the setup or install executable and run it.
Also download Revo Uninstaller and point that at the offending program. It usually does a good JOB of getting everything.
Good lucl.Quote from: Gremlin on November 29, 2009, 10:05:44 PM

Try running a registry cleaner like Glary Registry Repair.

Unless you are 100% sure you know what you are doing DO NOT use a registry cleaner. More harm then good usually comes from using these type of programs.Thats unfortunate. I've had good experieces with them.

Well, that certainly is more information. I guess I asked for it though.

I MEANT about the crashes though. Have you checked to see if there are any patches for the game?yea but they dont workWhat do you mean they don't work?

If you install them they don't affect the crashes, or you can't download and install them?they dont affect the crashes, if they do anything, they make the crashes worsethe crashes happen usually when im pressing a menu button or pausing/unpausing the game.so no one knows I have experienced crashes when I had been modifying game files within HOI2. HOI2 does'nt need much wrong with it before she dies so try all the obvious stuff like re-install the game and posibly DX.

I also played TR and it really made my head ache all the time, good thing I love solving puzzles that's why I don't read game guides.matter of perceptioinpeople who think lara croft , a fictional CHARACTER consisting entirely of POLYGONS, is a "HOT woman icon" are very very sad folk indeed.

She's a bunch of polygons. And anybody notice that when interest in a TR game wanes... *POOF* suddenly the next version appears and- lo and behold- her bust size has increased!

What happened? Was it an accident? Perhaps a bee sting? Surgery? Or maybe it was marketing's idea.I think Carbon's reply was sufficient for me.

Thank you guys.

Well, when I was very young and FOOLISH, we would place and item on the raairoad track and the train would conpress it. But a railroad detective had use sent to juvenile hall. and not worth the paper or bytes they are recorded on
when was the last time the courts did something about breaking the eula

Solve : Help with The Sims Complete Collection.?

Answer»

Hi (first time poster so go easy on me!)

So I bought this game from Amazon and installed it LAST night. It worked fine, I created a family, moved them in to a house, played for a few hours. Then I wanted to evict them so I could put them in to a bigger house. A message came up SAYING "error cannot evict". So I decided to go and create a new family, I saved them and went to buy a new house but the family don't appear and when I go back to look at the families I've created...the new ones aren't there!

I don't understand as it was working after I installed it.

I have uninstalled and re-installed it but that hasn't worked. I have also checked that I have all the SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS. And the DISKS are not damaged or scratched in the slightest.

Solve : FPS Co-Op mode?

Answer»

Does anyone know of any First Person Shooter games that also feature co-operative play mode? (Not deathmatch or Capture the Flag type stuff)I have dabbled with "Combat ARMS." It has a mode called "Fireteam" in which you and team mates take on terrorists.Doom, Quake, Quake 2, Duke Nukem 3d... they all have Cooperative (that is, more then one player essentially in what most would recognize as single-player mode).

Some of the newer source ports of these games are easier to SETUP for that, too.Can you tell us what games you already have and what kind of system you have so we know if you can play some of the newer games coming out.Years ago I lived & breathed Doom2 but when I look at it now it's sort of comical compared to more modern games.

Poor old computer is getting a bit long in the tooth I guess. I'm sorry to tell you this but you are not going to play many of the newer games with that system. The cheapest upgrade would be to get more RAM and a modern video card. some of the source ports MODERNIZE it pretty well; 3-d models and high-res textures, for example.

Now I'm scratching around for a co-op MOD to use on one of my existing games.
I'll report any success.

Solve : sound disappears when playing online multiplayer games?

Answer» SOMETIMES when I play a game (Age of Empires on cd in particular) with OTHERS online the sound will be there at the start, but then DISAPPEARS as I progress into the game.

Other than not being able to use my microphone in chat programs, this is the only problem I have with sound.

Would anyone have any clues here please?

Thanks for your help:)Disregard that post and don't click the link. It's spam. I've already flagged it and hopefully one of the mods will remove it quickly.

As for your issue, can you provide a complete list of your hardware?

Is Age of Empires the only one you're having trouble with? Do you have any problem with sound when just playing single player? Have you downloaded the latest PATCH for the game as well?

Solve : Microsoft bullies the little guy.?

Answer»

Interesting article right here:
http://lewisdenby.wordpress.com/2009/09/21/embarguments/

I am actually the Community Manager and a reviewer on Go! Gaming Giant, the site in question. I wasn't around for the founding of the site, but I've been there since its latter INFANCY. It's an up-and-coming gaming site that is slowly gaining recognition in the gaming community and we have been featured on all sorts of similar sites, as well as some publisher/developer sites. I even had one of my reviews featured on Bethesda's site at one point.

Anyway, the main gist of the article is that Nick, one of our reviewers, managed to buy Halo ODST last week (I believe; I don't know the proper date) when his local game shop released the game early. Obviously excited, he bought the game, played it, and posted a review. Well, apparently, this is a breach of the embargo that we didn't agree to. After all, the game was purchased at a store; it wasn't an advanced copy from Microsoft, nor was it pirated (he has proof of purchase). Also worth noting is that an embargo isn't a regulation enforced by law; it is only enforced by the company itself. However, with Microsoft threatening a lawsuit if we failed to remove the review, we eventually had to comply because nobody on the site can afford any sort of attorney. This is just a amateur site, and I am one of the oldest staff members, which should say something because I am currently only 24.

As the article above states, the review was removed. We were also blacklisted by Microsoft and barred from any of their future events. However, the site owner/founder Matt has been speaking with them and we are supposedly in the clear, but I don't know all of the details. Although I am a longtime member of the site, I only recently joined the staff. The review is back up because the embargo ended on Saturday, but it has left a bitter taste in many people's mouths. On the plus side, it is giving us a decent amount of publicity. They always say there's no such thing as bad publicity, right?

I just thought I'd share this little story with everyone because I personally find it interesting. Perhaps I have a bit of a bias, but still...I'm curious to see what some of you think about it. Feel free to discuss it here, and you are of course also welcome to visit the site or join the forum.heh, I love the insistence that they MUST show a proof of purchase.

"F-off, douchebags. I bought the game, I reviewed it, the only agreement I agreed to was the EULA which says nothing expressly or implicitly about any embargo, which I might add is not a legally enforceable concept except in the satellite case where I actually agreed to something of that nature."

But we must remember; this is coming from MS... remember the WHOLE, "opening of this package constitutes agreement to the enclosed EULA" crap?

They can get AWAY with a lot of stuff that they wouldn't otherwise because they have an army of lawyers.Yeah, good point. Although I'd like to think that a judge would lean in our favor, with their arsenal of lawyers, they'd probably find some way to make us all guilty of agreeing to an embargo (and then breaking it), pirating the game, selling copies of the pirated game, blowing up the Twin Towers, and murdering prostitutes in the 1800's. Heck, I'm already partially convinced. Heh.Quote from: CBMatt on September 22, 2009, 04:49:13 AM

Don't forget about stealing candy from babies.Actually, we might be a little guilty of that one.

Here's another article about the situation:
http://gaming.icrontic.com/articles/halo_3_odst_broken_embargo

This one just briefly mentions us:
http://www.news10.net/news/local/story.aspx?storyid=67244&provider=top

The whole thing is bringing in a lot of publicity for us, which is a good thing. But I've got to admit that it bothers me slightly that so many people seem to think that breaking the embargo was on PURPOSE. When you're able to purchase a game and take it home and play it, it's not really something that crosses your mind. The way I see it: if a game is available for purchase, there's no reason to think that an embargo is still in place. A lot of people also fault G3 for not taking the review down quickly enough (although it really wasn't up all that long), but they don't realize that this isn't some major site with an office building full of employees. G3 should have been more prepared (which is why some of us are now exchanging phone numbers), but nothing like this has ever happened on the site. Ignorance is not an excuse, of course...but for what it's worth, a lesson has been learned.

The sad part is that we weren't even the first site to review the game; there were several others before us. We just got Microsoft's attention because we're on the N4G aggregator. And I think they saw it as a very good opportunity to spark some interest in their new game. Oh well. As long as we don't get completely blacklisted (the details are fuzzy at the moment), I think it's mostly a win/win.It seems a bit childish to me. I understand their reasoning, although I don't agree with it.

From the one article, it sounds like the retailer is at fault for allowing him to get the game early.

On the other hand, not being aware of the "rules" of the industry isn't an excuse either. Hopefully, everything will work out alright for you guys.I agree with both of those...I think the store (Newegg) is at fault, but somebody should've found out the embargo date. I'm still new to the staff, though, so I'm not sure how that works exactly.

Matt, the owner, says that things are good between us and Microsoft now, but he hasn't given us any details yet, so that could mean anything.I personally find it quite disturbing, and I'm one who will stick it to the man. It just baffles me that M$ have to stick there noses into everything and take everything as an attack.
Your man has done nothing wrong he legally purchased a game and reviewed it. He did not go on to tpb and download an illegal copy and stick two fingers up to M$. I think M$ have there heads up there own... well you know. They think if they send an email threatening someone that the person will automatically bow down and submit.
I'm just glad it had the opposite effect to promote the site.. Other reviewers are upset with us and I can understand that because they all waited like they were supposed to. But I think it is ridiculous for Microsoft to get so upset about the whole thing, especially when it was quite a positive review. We have already provided them with proof of a legal purchase, so if they want to get upset with someone, their beef should be with Newegg. Newegg agreed to certain terms; we agreed to nothing, nor were we asked to agree to anything. But this situation isn't black and white, I suppose. With all of the different ways you can look at it, everyone is at fault in their own way. Personally, I think everything could be resolved with a nice friendly sleepover.CBMatt,
Thanks for a good topic. Very interesting.
IMO Microsoft is at fault. If they they want to prevent premature reviews, they have the means to do that. that. I suspect this may have been a planned "leak" to help draw attention. Microsoft is an expert at getting free publicity, at the expense of others. Of course that is IMO. So far I have not yet read any EULA stating I can not have an opinion. But that may change. In Microsoft's DEFENSE, I don't think they planned on having Newegg break the street release date. However, they should've been aware that Newegg is known for doing this. The did the same thing for Fable 2. So...I dunno, maybe Microsoft really did expect it. However, only a select few got ODST early, so it's really hard to say.

And while part of me thinks that this is part of a promotion plot, it also must be kept in mind that Microsoft didn't have any sort of "press release" about this and neither did we or N4G. This only got around because someone basically found out through a friend of a friend. That's not exactly how it worked, but it's the same general idea. Until then, nobody really knew about it. And although this is a lot of publicity for us, it's a tiny amount for a company like Microsoft. If this was all part of their evil plan, they may need to think a bit bigger next time.

They attempt to prevent premature reviews by placing these embargos. Heh. For the most part, people tend to abide by embargos. Those who don't usually aren't given another chance and won't be sent any future review copies. We weren't sent one at all, so the plan was to buy the game once it was released and review it then. And that's exactly what happened...it was just a bit earlier than planned. We receive tons of review copies from companies and always abide by the embargos set in place. People think we intentionally rushed this out because it's such a huge release (I disagree with this grand scale), but that's just ridiculous. One of our guys got Scribblenauts a couple of weeks ago, and that is a highly-anticipated game, but the review wasn't even posted until today. This wasn't some kind of race for us; just a misunderstanding.

This is, of course, a misunderstanding that won't happen again. And I will soon be confirming the embargo date of the new Guitar Hero game with Activision before I even think of attempting a review. Ha.

Solve : How to play The Sims 2 PC DVD ROM on my PC??

Answer»

I've recently bought The Sims 2 PC DVD-ROM. I inserted the DVD in the drive and tried opening it from the G: drive. It gives me 3 options: 1. Sims Colelction 2. The Sims : Superstar 3. The Sims 2. I clicked on 'Sims Collection' and installed the game. After that when I try to play the game from the shortcut created on desktop it gives me an error saying 'It has come to our attention that you have installed another Sims expansion pack after the Sims Vacation. For this to work properly, the The Sims Vacation installer will now update your nstallation. Select OK to PROCEED.' When I click on 'OK' nothing happens. Please help. This is the first time I'm trying to play a game on my PC. I'm using windows XP. Please help. What Sims software was installed on the computer before you tried to install this collection?I did not install any Sims software before installing the Sims collection. If there are any software's to be installed, please let me know.No problem - I was just trying to make SURE there wasn't another attempt to install Sims software at an earlier time. Let's see...is Sims Vacation part of the "Collection" software?how do I check WHETHER Sims Vacation is a part of the collection software or not. I just have one DVD and while I autorun it gives only 3 options 1. Sims Collection 2. The Sims : Superstar 3. The Sims 2. Also it has options CRACK and Exit at the right bottom. I've clicked on Sims collection and it automatically installs the game. After that when I click on the desktop shortcut it gives me the same error which I mentioned earlier.I tried to look on line today, but I'm restricted from seeing game related sites by a firewall. Does the box say what games are part of the original collection?

You might try uninstalling and REINSTALLING the software. The box doesn't say any such thing as what is part of its collection. And I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the game. I get the same error again. Please help. Am I doing something wrong. Do I have to use the crack file or something.Quote

Do I have to use the crack file or something.
No, no -- we don't advise that sort of thing, around here!

Let me look around a bit when I get to where I have an unrestricted access to the Internet. It does not make sense that, having bought a legitimate copy of the game, they would require you to have another portion of the game in order to have it install.

Solve : Is Vista cheating?!??!?!?

Answer»

Solved on 26 September 2009.

Hi all.

This isn't really an important question but...

I'd like to know WHY, out of five completed games of Chess Titans, I have not won a single one of these games, even when the game appears to end with the computer's king in checkmate.

The picture I have attached shows what I mean. The computer's king can't move without been captured. If he GOES to the right, my queen will capture him. If he goes to the left, the rook get's him. If he moves up, again, the queen gets him. And yet it STILL counts it as a stalemate/draw.

Cheating/glitch? Or am I MISTAKEN? This has happened quite a few times.

EDIT:
Image removed as topic is solved. Turns out it really was a stalemate. Thanks everyone!Did the computer have any more peaces? If it has no other peaces then it can't make a move and that is a stalemate.Quote

Stalemate is a situation in chess where the player whose turn it is to move is not in check but has no legal moves. A stalemate ends the game in a draw. Stalemate is covered in the rules of chess.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stalemate

Quote
Checkmate (frequently shortened to mate) is a situation in chess (and in other boardgames of the chaturanga family) in which one player's king is threatened with capture (in check) and there is no way to meet that threat. Or, simply put, the king is under direct attack and cannot avoid being captured. Delivering checkmate is the ultimate goal in chess: a player who is checkmated loses the game (the king is never actually captured – the game ends as soon as the king is checkmated because checkmate leaves the defensive player with no legal moves). In practice, most players resign an inevitably lost game before being checkmated.

If a king is under attack but the threat can be met, then the king is said to be in check, but is not in checkmate. If a player is not in check but has no legal move (that is, every possible move would put the king in check), the result of the game is stalemate, and the game ends in a draw (but in other variants, it is a loss for the stalemated player). (SEE rules of chess.)

I do believe, old son, that in TRUE Microsoft tradition, the game is yankin' your chain! What Aegis said.umm... that is a stalemate...

they aren't in check... and there are no legal moves.Rats! My feeble brain had Microsoft right where I wanted them!

It is stalemate because, on review, no black piece has the king in "check." I thought the queen did, but I was wrong. Since white cannot move anywhere that will not put him in "check," he stands at stalemate.

Checkmate would occur if the king currently stood in "check" by a piece, and could not work its way out of the situation by a move, a block by another piece, or a sacrifice by another piece.

Solve : need help with NFS Shift?

Answer»

Hi. I have downloaded the realease demo for NFS Shift, tried it out, only to find it crashed my computer. When I got it working again, I went to canyourunit.com and did a system check for the game. Everything came out as a 'Pass' except for my CPU. It said the minimum GHZ required was 1.6 GHZ, but mine runs w/ 2.1 GHZ. This is a laptop with Windows Vista. If anyone could help, that would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.I have read somewhere (I can't remember where) that the minimum system requirements for NFS Shift have been posted out WRONG. They are higher than what they STATE. So there is a chance you are not hitting the Min requirements.Laptops aren't build for gaming, THOUGH some preform very well or EVEN excelent while gaming, it's still not MADE for gaming, you cant upgrade allot..... and therefor not smart to use a Laptop as a gaming platform.

I found the NSF Shift specs, herese the processor and the link to the site.

Processor – 2.8GHz or faster (Windows Vista requires 3.0 GHz)
http://blogulate.com/content/need-for-speed-pro-street-demo-download/

your laptop isn't fast enough to run it.heh, I was going to say, that a 1.6Ghz will barely run Underground at low settings...

Solve : red alert 2?

Answer»

Ok, I installed the GAME on windows xp - why, whenever I start the game, does it wait ten seconds then all my units die? Doesn't matter if its campaign or skirmish.
I have a VALID CD key and cd - its all legal!!!
ArghHave you tried re-installing? Does it say it works on XP? Sorry I would google it but well... I had some other stuff to do..ok, i've been googling, and according to http://www.techspot.com/vb/all/windows/t-55637-Red-Alert-2-instant-death.html my red alert thinks it is pirated - but that is just bizzare!!! Its a proper cd with key!!!

This is not cool.Have you tried there HELP?Well i just reinstalled it using the Allied disk and it still doesn't work. I'll try some kind of patch now I guess.I would definately try there website and see what comes up patches etc.Ok i got a patch and it works.

It strikes me as very pointless that the legal game which i purchased won't run without a questionably-legal patch.

Incase ANYONE else has the same problem the patch is called ra21006.

Cheers.

Solve : cannot open applet on the last window after entering yahoo games card section?

Answer» HELLO people,

I am having a bit of a difficulty in trying to determine why my applet does not open once I go through the long process of logging in to yahoo games. When I type in the letter identification all I get is a blank page. I have done all the cleansing of my computer according to instructions. I am completely baffled. My email is: [emailprotected] if you care to write me a fix.

I would be deeply grateful. I am posting the results of all my cleansing also. Is it a software conflict...or does windows xp not like yahoo games anymore?

Cheers

Gabe

I think you're searching down the WRONG rabbit hole, here.

I would check to make sure you have the newest version of whatever browser you're using (IE, Firefox, Safari, Opera, whatever).

Then check to make sure you have all necessary plugins. The big ones are Flash, Shockwave, and Silverlight.

Once you have those, you may need a reboot and hopefully all will WORK swimmingly.
