Solve : Flail?

Answer»

hey guys im looking to find an mmo rpg that has flails as WEAPONS, would any gamer know of such game, im lookinf for perferably free to play but i dont mind buying the game, but i am not interested in paying to play To my knowledge, there isn't one on a free to play MMO. It's understandable why certain weapons like flails and other hinge or chain-based weapons are left out, they're DIFFICULT to animate correctly and easily. I know Aion (not free to play) has a weird mace/flail hybrid weapon (normally works like a mace, SOMETIMES swings out like a flail with a chain).

Flails, and other SIMILAR weapons, were not very practical in combat. They were quite difficult to use without injuring yourself. The flail was ORIGINALLY an agricultural tool, used for threshing grain. It was used as a weapon by farmers when a proper weapon wasn't available.hm. thanks for the post, i'll have to keep looking just in case i missed one./

Solve : hi i'm planning to play online games through web proxies..?

Answer»

right now i have found proxycap and i don't know what to pair it with, and sometimes i want to have no restriction on internet access. can you suggest me please a software? just like your-freedom but i heard you need to pay for it so i didn't bother anymore. Anything that can be free thanks a lot Sounds illegal to me.......Sounds like you're bypassing placed security measures to me.....Regardless, you can't play online games (the not browser based kind) through http proxies anyway. i checked from the net and says they are not really illegal, i just wanted to play world of warcraft through it thanks anywayThrough the actual game, is it? Not through a browser? If so, you'll want a hardware proxy.Just curious... why would you even want to play Warcraft through a proxy?

For online games, especially Warcraft, USING a proxy would increase your latency, not make it better. EVERYONE I've EVER known to have tried it has increased their latency to the point where they're constantly getting disconnected because of ping timeouts, especially in high population areas like Dalaran and Wintergrasp. The BEST way to improve your connection with Warcraft would be to connect directly to the server.

I've never known Blizzard to ban IPs, just accounts. If your IP was banned, your brother wouldn't be able to play either (if he's using the same connection).

You can contact account services and dispute the ban through one of the methods mentioned here:
http://us.blizzard.com/support/article.xml?locale=en_US&articleId=20606

I'd recommend getting someone on the phone and making an inquiry that way. It's a toll-free number in the US (1-800-592-5499). There are additional phone numbers on the page I linked if you're located in another country, most of which are also toll-free. If you're in a country that doesn't allow calling to US toll-free numbers, you can call 1-949-955-0283, but long distance charges will apply. Alternatively, you can email account services at [emailprotected] or through their web form.

Keep in mind, Warcraft monitors what pages you're browsing and what additional programs you have running on your computer. That's not rumor or myth... Blizzard admitted this years ago and it is even in the license agreement (which most people don't read). If you were doing or running anything suspicious on your computer while the game was running, it's entirely possible that your account was banned for it.

From the license agreement:
Quote
5. Pre-Loaded Software.
The media on which the Game Client is distributed may contain additional software and/or content for which you do not have a license (the "Locked Software"), and you agree that Blizzard may install the Locked Software onto your hard drive during the Game Client installation process. You also agree that you will not access, use, distribute, copy, display, reverse engineer, derive source code from, modify, disassemble, decompile any Locked Software, or create any derivative works based on the Locked Software, until and unless you receive from Blizzard (a) a license to use that software; and (b) a valid alphanumeric key with which to unlock it. If you receive a license and a key from Blizzard, you may only unlock those portions of a single copy of the Locked Software for which you received a license. The terms of the End User License Agreement displayed after the Locked Software is unlocked will replace and supersede this Agreement, but only with regard to the Locked Software for which you receive a license. Notwithstanding anything to the contrary herein, you may make one (1) copy of the Locked Software for archival purposes only.

6. Consent to Monitor.
WHEN RUNNING, THE GAME MAY MONITOR YOUR COMPUTER'S RANDOM ACCESS MEMORY (RAM) FOR UNAUTHORIZED THIRD PARTY PROGRAMS RUNNING CONCURRENTLY WITH THE GAME. AN "UNAUTHORIZED THIRD PARTY PROGRAM" AS USED HEREIN SHALL BE DEFINED AS ANY THIRD PARTY SOFTWARE PROHIBITED BY SECTION 2. IN THE EVENT THAT THE GAME DETECTS AN UNAUTHORIZED THIRD PARTY PROGRAM, THE GAME MAY (a) COMMUNICATE INFORMATION BACK TO BLIZZARD, INCLUDING WITHOUT LIMITATION YOUR ACCOUNT NAME, DETAILS ABOUT THE UNAUTHORIZED THIRD PARTY PROGRAM DETECTED, AND THE TIME AND DATE; AND/OR (b) EXERCISE ANY OR ALL OF ITS RIGHTS UNDER THIS AGREEMENT, WITH OR WITHOUT PRIOR NOTICE TO THE USER.

The "Locked Software" refers to Blizzard's 'The Warden', their anti-cheat software. Some people classify it as spyware, but Blizzard can get away with it because they tell you and get your consent to install it when you agree to the license. To conclude, Contact Blizzard. We will not help you circumvent any security measures.

Solve : Problems with graphic intensive computer games?

Answer»

Hello. I would like some help for my computer as this problem has plagued me ever since I purchased this graphics card. I believe when I installed it, everything seemed fine. Several MMORPGs played amazingly well for a while. Then I started to up the ante by playing games with higher PC requirements. One of them is Devil May Cry 4 and every TIME I play the game, after a short period of time, the game starts messing up. The screen freezes and eventually the sound messes up as well. This error also shows up on some of the MMORPGs I play as well, but only when they're windowed.

I started looking into the problem. I checked the nVidia drivers and I'm almost positive they're up to date. I also checked to see if the video card is installed properly and it looks fine. It may have something to do with the fan since the situation got slightly better after I got rid of the rust. Also, it seems that the MACHINE often gets very often when this happens and when I try to immediately reboot after, nothing happens. As I play any of these graphic intensive games during cold temperatures, it took longer to have this same exact error spring up on me. I was thinking it may be due to the cooling system, rather than a software problem. I hope this isn't the case but if it is, then I guess it can't be helped.

Here are my computer's specs. I've also posted screenshots of what the screen looks like when this happens. I appreciate anyone who is willing to help. Thank you!

Welcome to the forums.
This definitely looks and sounds like an overheating problem to me.
Could you post as much information about your computer's hardware as possible please, so we can see what we're dealing with?Oh oops I forgot the specs. Here they are:

Intel Core 2 CPU 6700 @ 2.66GHz
2 GB Ram
NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GT
Intel 82566DC Gigabit Network Connection
Using a Samsung SyncMaster 2220WM/G22PW/220WM

That's all I can think of. Please request any information you may need to help me solve this problem. Oh and I forgot to mention, this computer is custom built.
What case do you have, and what cooling setup?

The most likely culprits are dust - check here or bad airflow. It's a Dell case. And how do I find out what cooling setup I have?I thought it was custom built?
By cooling setup, I mean how many fans, what size, placement, etc.It is but all the stuff is placed in a Dell tower/case.

I don't know the exact setup. Actually, I'm not even sure where the fan is. I've taken a picture of what it looks like though, if that helps.

Wow ... it sure is dusty in there.
With it being a Dell case, they're usually designed to accommodate the components that were originally in there, and no more, so you're likely to run into cooling issues. Some Dells have no fans, or just a single quiet fan - I see only one fan in your pictures, which isn't enough really.
What machine was the case originally from?No idea. I always thought custom built computers were full proof but I guess I was wrong. Anyway, is there anything I can do besides cleaning the fan?You can clean the fans and the dust from the rest of the system, and you could add more fans. With it being a proprietary case, it's probably not possible to add more fans though. If I can't add more fans, is it possible to add a cooling system of some sort? Or what about switching the power supply to something more efficient? (I heard this from a computer REPAIRMAN of mine a while ago) Or can I do nothing else?Quote from: Bashum100 on July 11, 2009, 11:21:10 PM

No idea. I always thought custom built computers were full proof but I guess I was wrong. Anyway, is there anything I can do besides cleaning the fan?

I think we're confusing what you mean by "custom built."

Typically, when telling a computer geek you have a "custom built" computer, that usually means that all the parts were bought separately (case, motherboard, processor, memory, power supply, video card, hard drives, DVD burner, etc.), and put together without the blessing of a brand name like Dell, HP, Gateway, or whatnot.

In this case, you have a "factory built" or "brand name" PC. Perhaps Dell had an option on its website for you to "customize" it or select your own parts, but using the term "custom built" to describe anything with a brand name on it is going to cause confusion.

Onto the problem at hand, overheating could be the problem. You can either clean out the fan using canned air (the stuff that you get from an ELECTRONICS store that they don't sell to minors for fear of them trying to get high off of it), an air compressor, or a vacuum. Just be careful with whatever you use.

Alternatively, it could just be a bad video card. Usually when there are artifacts like that on the screen, that means the card is bad regardless of what temperature it's running at...I doubt that it is just the graphics card's fault since he said that the sound is acting up too killerb...

Yes , I would also suggest that this could be a cooling issue. But before you even think about going into the case when installing your drivers for the graphics card did you remember to delete the old driver first? I would suggest

1) downloading this program

http://majorgeeks.com/Nasty_File_Remover_d3233.html

I used to use it and it WORKS...

2) then uninstalling the drivers from start > control panel > add/remove programs > nvidia driver ver xxx

3) after uninstall run the program by selecting your driver manufacturer (nvidia or ati usually but others do exist)

then do a full reinstall of the latest driver , this should stop any conflicts of drivers from happening abnd from your problem this would seem more the case of this than cooling since your graphics card does seem to have a fan attached...
You will have to try and move the wires from the power unit to the inside of the case , closer to the motherboard.

If that does not work then you will have to buy a new fan if there are useable fittings for the device...

but I would also advise you to try the onboard graphics to see if it is the monitors fault or maybe the graphics card?

THIS PROBLEM MAY WELL BE DOWN TO YOUR GRAPHICS CARD THOUGH so be prepared to take it back to the shop if it is faulty...
Alright so thanks for the advice guys. I'm actually leaning toward the fact that this video card is faulty but I will try to clean the fan as well. I doubt that'll do anything but it's worth a shot. I have a feeling the drivers are fine because I just installed them a while ago but I'm willing to try reinstalling them again. If there's anyone else who can give me a different solution, please feel free to give it a shot. Thank you!

Any computer, laptop or desktop, will overheat if not maintained properly or used in a WAY it isn't designed. I've never had a problem with my laptop overheating, ...
The manufactures do not make clear what the limits are. And there is a deference between Desktop and Laptop. The Desktop has lower internal temperature. The laptop has little internal airs space volume.
I ruined my hard drive in tis laptop because I used in in an area that was not air-conditioned and was doing a very long transfer of files from the laptop to a desktop. The vents were not blocked or full of dust. But The desktop runs in the environment all the time and does not overheat. The laptop got too hot for the internal hard drive. The CPU fan does not do enough for the hard drive. IMHO the manufactures should warn people about this. Because it is portable, people think you have use it anywhere. Not exactly true. Don't know why, but I just assumed the design would allow heavy use. I was wrong.Quote from: Geek-9pm on October 09, 2011, 11:41:25 AM

I had a similar problem - funny thing was that I did raise my laptop from the table and that increased the duration of playtime GREATLY but still it did overheat in 1-2hrs... Then I got nervous and took a smoke at my window, it was like 12C outside and inside it was ~22, when my room cooled down (it got pretty cold, had to spin into a snuggy) my laptop did run a game at max performance whole night... I guess my room air acted as a coolant/heat sink or something like that Quote from: Geek-9pm on October 09, 2011, 11:41:25 AM

My silly archaism is aimed at the advertising hyperbole and documentation of the manufacturers that lead one to believe that laptops are somehow more durable than there desktop computers.

But to tell the truth, some engineers that ought to know better do not understand the art and science of cooling small compact ELECTRONIC devices that have significant heat generation.

The following information is available, but not in the advertising and documentation most nusers get.

Tradeoffs

Typically buying a ruggedized laptop implies compromising on few desirable features: A ruggedized laptop is in general lower performance, more expensive and heavier. A rugged laptop is not a CHEAP laptop. E.g. the Dell Latitude ATG starts at $2049 and the Dell Latitude XFR starts at $3899 (March 08), which is at least $1000 more than the equivalent mainstream laptop from Dell. Also, note that if you intend to use the laptop in bright outdoor conditions, you will be cranking up the screen brightness to its highest level - which will result in faster battery drainage - so, consider getting a higher cell battery if such an option is available.

The key factors to keep in mind while buying a rugged laptop are:

Do you really need a rugged laptop? i.e. do you need to spend the extra money and live with potentially reduced performance and features. Perhaps a water resistant & drop protection laptop case will do?
What kind of hazards do you think your laptop will be subjected to?
What is your usage environment for this laptop? Will it be mounted in your car?
http://www.linux-laptop.net/rugged-laptop.html
This inside of a car can get over 104 F (40 C) in a short while, even on a 'nice day.' It may TAKE the laptop inside the car twenty minuets to get back to a normal temperature.

But did you sees that in the user guide? The one that came with the new laptop?

Well, that's their fault for leaving their laptop (or any heat-sensitive device) in a car in the sun, which is a stupid thing to do anyway, and not to mention irrelevant to the OP's issue.

People make a LOT of exaggerated claims. Even if a person were to get every single mount available and were a Paladin (3 class mounts) Tailor (3 profession mounts) and Engineer (2 profession mounts) and got every single trading card game mount, faction mount, dropped mount, buyable mount, Recruit-a-friend mount, etc. the total is 152 ground and flying mounts on either side of the fence (Horde or Alliance) on a single character. There are over 200 mounts in game, but only 152 available to any given character, and that even includes mounts that are no longer available (Argent Tourney mounts, Brewfest mount, etc.).

It may be possible that a brand new character is limited to 152 mounts, but any given character limited to 152 mounts is incorrect. I know this topic is a month OLD, but nothing has changed since September to October. My character currently has 142 mounts and the ability to gain an additional (currently in game) 36 mounts. So someone having 153 mounts is quite possible, difficult as it may be.

Quote from: BC_Programmer on September 10, 2011, 09:48:21 AM
The important question of course is, whether out of all the mounts in WoW... can you ride a pig?

No....I can't ride a pig....but I do ride around on a magical ROOSTER.

Character and server or it didn't happen.

My initial count missed some of the NEWER mounts. There are now 178 obtainable mounts, including ones already removed from the game.If I played WoW I would TOTALLY have a blue pegasus named Rainbow Dash as my loyal mount. Ideally with a mane and tail that makes it actually rainbow coloured. At least that is what I would work towards.

Since I don't I'll have to settle for Pigs. I suppose I need to use my 12 saddles for something.Quote from: quaxo on October 13, 2011, 08:02:50 AM

I was talking about your post

Allow me to explain, you asked "Were there any changes with Activex settings made at all during the installations?"

Which I concede might be a interesting course of questioning, if the installations in question didn't predate any SORT of ActiveX by nearly 20 years! Additionally, no part of ActiveX- or COM, for that matter- is used by the DOS emulation subsystem, so changes to those settings wouldn't affect them (and I question what exactly constitutes an "ActiveX setting" since to my understanding none exist, except within other programs. (Internet Explorer, for example).

My best guess might be because of the way windows deals with older software installations. it can "detect" some game installs- notably, Duke Nukum 1, 2, and 3, and sets certain compatibility settings to config.nt and autoexec.nt that will change how all DOS-based software works. autoexec.nt and config.nt are profile-level, I believe, which would explain why the issues are reproducible in a new account.

It could very well be that those changes are needed for the other game, which isn't something Windows takes notice of being installed. Best way to confirm this would be to use Process Monitor (Filemon is deprecated) and capture events for the initial installation and then search those results for a file access to any config.nt or autoexec.nt files.

Yeah, I figured that out, I speak fluent sarcasm
I still have a few titles kicking around that use Activex and I think there might still be one or two that need DirectX. I've also found a couple that require an older version of DirectX - and neither of them will run with the newer versions. I realize that it's probably a missing game patch, but I'm not to worried about it since it RUNS flawless in a VM.

Solve : I found this to be a coincidence?

Answer»

I was reading about the history of anti-piracy systems like SecuROM, starforce, etc.

I noticed an interesting trend.

Nobody seemed to have an issue with them, until they started to work effectively to prevent people from getting a hold of illegal copies of the game.

Starforce was used for years, but when they IMPROVED version 3 enough that it was able to prevent a successful crack of a popular title for a entire year (Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory). Towards the end of that year (2005) with that game still uncracked, suddenly a "petition" to "stop" Starforce was put in place. I can't help but find this to be more then a coincidence. Doesn't help that all the "claims" against the protection I can find are either anecdotal, or CLEARLY fabricated (like people claiming that it destroyed their discs or disk drives, which is utterly stupid. The boycott site in google's cache even has a picture of a broken CD, implying that it was a Driver that was able to do that. That's preposterous, I don't even see how software could be manipulated to destroy a CD-ROM disk.

And then the company using Starforce (Ubisoft) switched to SecuROM, which was less able to combat piracy and everybody was happy.

Until SecuROM was updated and was made more effective to do what it was designed to do. Can't help but see a pattern there. All the arguments against these two- "they install hidden drivers" and stuff, are ridiculous. They were doing that for years, why is it suddenly evil when it starts working better? And programs like speedfan install low-level drivers that have known security vulnerabilities, nobody petitions against it for that reason.

Anyway found that interesting and thought I would share. That is an item of interest. The issue of DRM and copy protection becomes an issue when it works. How odd! When it does not work the users are not up in arms about how wrong it is to have a copy protection that does not work!
Instead, the protests come when it is effective! Amazing!

The wikipedia article is not up to date, but provides a general outline.

SecuROM aims to resist home media duplication DEVICES, professional duplicators, and attempts at reverse engineering software. It is most often used for commercial computer games running under the Microsoft Windows platform. The method of disc protection in current versions is Data Position Measurement; this may or may not be used in conjunction with online DRM components.

I don't see this as a reason to dump it. I presented it merely for comparison, pirate-supporters/ DRM fighters claim that the DRM techniques install drivers, and those drivers have vulnerabilities and that they expose everybody to malware and need to be stopped, and yet you don't see the same sort of thing raging against speedfan, or hwinfo, or any number of other products.

Quote
Is speedfan issue related to the old dcom issue?

No. Completely unrelated. speedfan uses IOCTL in a insecure way. IOCTL is something that drivers only use, and it's certainly not used by DCOM. Overall, I agree with BC_Programmer.

DRM is legal and is required by the Movie industry and others. Microsoft, Sony and others would not destroy their market by nusing software taht would harm any Personal Computer.

Yes, I did make a remark about India. But that is another issue. There Microsoft has made it clear they will play hard ball with users who would 'crack' windows authentication.

Of interest, some critics have credentials. Here is one.

The paper was about Vista's design and specifically about the DRM. The article is now out of date, but the same kind of stuff is being parroted on some forums that claim to have the users' interest at heart.

Any low-level software or firmware has the potential to do harmful things. To try and stop the vulnerability, you would need a virtual machine that would police ever instruction being executed by the CPU. An big drag on system resources where I/O speed is important. The pratfall solution is to have Anti-Virus software that prevents a virus from getting into the system

DRM software takes just a small part of the CPU load to test the authenticity of a media file. The encryption overhead is no longer an real issue with modern CPUs that have dual-cores and clocks about 2 GHZ. After all, this is 2011, not 2001. Ten years makes a lot of difference. Solve : Allods - Russian MMORPG - Strangeness?

Answer»

So a friend of mine who jumped ship from the World of Warcraft MMORPG scene to Allods which is one of those games thru gPotato which is free to play, but you have to pay to have good gear and mounts etc. I decided to check it out to play with my long time online friend who is in Canada. One thing I am trying to figure out is has anyone noticed anything strange with the patching process of this game. They use bit-torrents for everyone to stay up to date by feeding off of each other for updates which runs active as part of teh game service.

What struck me as odd was that the initial download of about 1.6GB went quick until I go to about 1539.368MB of 1548.564MB in which point the download stopped. (*These numbers are not actual, but there was about a 8 MB difference of remaining download to go.) After 2 hours of not getting any further, I restarted the game download and it reloaded where it left off from the temp download file and went back to the same count and hung.

*Prior to this point my firewall popped up asking if I wanted to allow access, which I declined access. The access was to allow for my system to upload data from port 6968. Since all I wanted to do was download the game and play it vs become a bit-torrent seed for others, I declined this.

Still same results I decided to uninstall the progress so far and redownload from a mirror thinking maybe the installer/downloader had an issue from the original source. Got to same count and an hour of hang. Decided since this netbook wasnt a critical system with critical private data to open up port 6968 to uploading traffic and within a few seconds my system connected to some IP's for uploading data and then it continued to download the remaining 8MB and was ready to play.

Anyone know why this upload process is required? I have since shut off upload outbound port 6968 to decline being a seeder and the game runs fine, but I found this rather interesting that a downloader would get to like 99% and then hang without warning that the reason for it hanging is because they want you to give them uploaded data back prior to going to 100%.

Any and all feedback on this game or gPotato based games please feel free to post here to warn me about if any known issues. Thanksother clients saw you weren't uploading and so refused to upload to you. Interesting that it still ALLOWED 99% download from others, and then at the last minute it had an instruction that said... ok your not sharing so were are going to stop you just short of 100% download. But I suppose your correct in that this is probably what was happening.

Kind of dumb though that they dont warn you that if you dont allow your firewall to allow upload sharing prior to the pop up of your firewall requesting Approval/Denial, that you wont be able to install the game. To just leave you in a hung download with no messages stating WHY probably caused others less determined than myself to say I guess I dont need this game since it doesnt even download all the way to install. I wonder if they think all people click ALLOW every time the firewall pops up. But on another note, I suppose they may also think that all people (mostly kids) would allow the access, while they may not think about the small population like myself who doesnt allow all software and downloaders to run freely in my personal digital domain..lolQuote from: DaveLembke on NOVEMBER 01, 2011, 02:10:19 PM

the 99% isn't contiguous. it just means that from the total you needed to download, you had 99% of it. Doesn't mean you didn't have the last portions, the clients refusing to upload were likely refusing to upload to you for the entire duration, but they also happened to be the only clients with certain portions of the download you needed.

They probably assume that people understand the difference between being altruism and being a cheat. refusing upload means you are taking something, and not contributing anything to the network and system that is allowing you to download in the first place. It's freeloading, plain and simple. If you don't contribute to the upstream, there is no reason to expect that you are entitled to acquire the entire product, since any other client could be set to simply refuse to contribute to you because you aren't contributing to anybody. This statement surprised me! I am guessing your well protected behind a high end (example . Cisco) firewall or something of the likes and not just a $40 router with built in firewall, and the computer never moves to other networks, to only have a single layer of defense outside of the PC itself?

I use a $40 router as my primary line of defense and the built in MS Firewall as 2nd line of defense. MS Firewall isnt the best, but it isnt a resource HOG and its bundled with OS, so I use it. The MS Firewall was what popped up asking to allow access or not for upload port 6968. MS Firewall isnt the best firewall option out there, but its good enough and better than nothing when it comes to my portable computers where they would be sitting targets for port probing if I had nothing to protect them.

I agree that lots of security and protection software out there do eat up resources badly like Norton and McAfee. I guess we all have our preferences as to how well or less protected we chose to be and the risks associated with lesser lines of defense.Quote from: DaveLembke on November 01, 2011, 07:25:17 PM

it's a D-Link DIR-655. was ~$100 when I purchased it. this computer never moves to other networks. my laptop does, but it doesn't have a firewall either. It is usually booted into linux but I make no distinction.

It's not IMO a matter of eating them up badly, it's that I don't see the point in having them installed to waste CPU cycles and whatnot.

If you ask me, there are more risks associated with being "secure". The fact is that for the most part anti-malware/spyware programs can only detect known malicious software and it's variants. It's either that, or you get flagged with false positives about everything. For a time, Mcafee flagged any program that contained the string "Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run" as malware. I know because one of my tools was flagged by the product. And yet, I just had to reverse that string in the code and use A function to reverse it and there was no flag. If circumventing the protection is that simple for virus authors, what is the point?

The big issue I have is that a lot of users tend to "let their guard down" or aren't as suspicious of somewhat strange activity, under the guise that "well I have a AV program/firewall whatever, so I am invincible". Or even better, people will have anti-malware and firewall programs installed, and when they try to run a program will actually listen to the "instructions" for that program that "oh I guarantee this isn't a virus, just allow everything". Which defeats the purpose; my point is, it doesn't matter what security solution a person is using, the weak spot is the user.

Consider the typical scenario for malware installation- a trojan horse.

First, the person will have to download the program.

In order to be infected, either they download it from an untrusted source, or a trusted source is compromised. The latter is very unlikely. The former is the situation most often encountered. How to combat? Don't download from untrusted sources.

Second, the person will have to execute the program. At this point, an AV will "alert" the user if it suspects it to be malware. But, if you ask me, the user had already made the fatal mistake of downloading it in the first place. Anti-virus and anti-malware is not preventative, it is only employed when things are already going downhill. And what if that trojan horse isn't detected? new malware is created all the time, often infecting hundreds of thousands machines before even a single AV vendor catches wind of it. Because the AV doesn't flip out, the user will take this as a "certificate of authenticity" the virus scan says it's clean, so it must not have evil intentions, or be infected.

the term "infected" is another interesting barrier. A skilled person can easily see the difference between an infected PC and one that isn't infected; but how do you detect this through software? How do you know what is bad and what is good? It's all through hueristics and blacklists, if the program deals with these specific locations and whatnot. But the thing is that plenty of totally legitimate software follows those same rules. One person's Anti-virus, for example, flagged BCSearch, my search program, as malicious. after doing some digging, the only reason it did that was because I used a specific API function in a certain way. I didn't use it wrong. I didn't use it badly. For whatever reason, the AV decided that any program that uses API function X in this specific pattern is evil. But the thing is, not only does legitimate, uninfected software use it that way, but surely there are plenty of malicious applications that don't, so what good is the detection logic there?

The fact is, that trying to detect and properly eliminate viruses is practically in the realm of face recognition and other "fuzzy logic" problems. Face recognition has come along, but it still requires the guiding hand of a person who can recognize faces. The difference is that all people are innately born with the "built-in" ability to recognize faces. Not all people can properly "guide" a malware program when it balls up, and the fact is that such mistakes are inevitable purely as a result of the way they work.

For the most part, the same applies for firewalls. Firewalls don't so much detect bad actions as they simply detect outgoing connections. This makes sense, but if something is making a outgoing connection that isn't supposed to, you've already lost. the program is already on the computer, and if the author knows what they are doing they have full access to the machine to simply disable that software firewall or insert the appropriate configuration information to let it through, meaning no alert and to the user, no problems. Incoming is no longer an issue as even the cheapest router these DAYS has a good firewall. And outgoing is a non-issue because by the time it get's to the point where a software firewall would detect it, there is a good chance the malicious program has simply added itself and gave it access to the external network anyway, so a software firewalls functionality depends solely on the diligence of the malware author. Not a metric I trust.

Additionally: What would port probing do?

Instead of installing a firewall, you should be making sure that you don't have listening connections. Unless you happen to be running a server of some kind, you should have any at all; and if you do, you should make sure that incoming connections are properly authenticated. Using a software firewall as a protection against that is just covering the true problem, which is that you have unsecured, unauthenticated ports listening for incoming connections and responding to them.

For example: let's say somebody has a SSH server. the port will be listening. Clients connect, and give authentication details before they are allowed further access.

The only way a "port probing" by a experienced hacker would get into the system would be if the SSH server is outdated (and they use a known exploit or vulnerability) or there is another misconfiguration. Both of those are the responsibility of the person running the server, and keeping them updated to prevent exploitation of the system is practically their job.

The typical malware application either tries to connect to another machine on the internet to communicate and get information on what other trojans to download, or it wants to open a listening port so that it's "master" can tell it what to do. In either case, if you ask me, the game is "over" since you have the trojan in the first place; and as I noted, the way hueristics work means that you cannot 100% rely on an AV program, but it GIVES a lot of people the feeling that they are "invincible" so people are more likely to run programs that they would find questionable under the assumption that "if it's bad, my AV will know" and then take the AV not flagging it as malicious as a sign that it is perfectly safe. The fact that AV programs mark files as "clean" or "infected" when neither can be determined with absolute certainty via software may seem like a nitpick but it doesn't help peoples assumptions about the infallibility of AV software.

Anyway, anecdotally, the only time I've had an AV installed is years ago when I first connected to the internet (2005 or therabouts I think it was, and with windows 98 no less) and more recently after I was infected with virut, in order to prevent my old files from reinfecting me. "ah ha!" you say, so you got infected because you weren't using a AV!" Well, no- you see, it wasn't until after I was infected that the virus even registered with most AVs. Afterwards I got a new PC that ran Vista and now 7 which pretty much made most Malware obsolete, in that I still get prompted for administrator access. No malware that can do anything dangerous can function without admin access, so I only dole that out when I trust the program, or am prepared to do a check with process explorer to make sure it's not doing anything that can be construed as malicious. The only problem I've had so far has been as a result of doing the former but not doing the latter. And it was one instance that was quickly rectified when I discovered it.BC I enjoy your knowledgeable posts Had a good laugh at the ah-ha statement. I too have been bitten by a virus that was too new many years ago even running the latest corporate edition of NAV. But more recently a few years ago bitten by BlackVNC exploit of VNC 4.1 on a server I had with web presence. Since that day catching the hacker in my server controlling the system remotely, and me quickly pulling the network cable from the back of the system after seeing the hackers activities on my 2nd display in the corner late one night, I have been sort of on hightened security and awareness as to what is running and why, as well as not just allowing everything to run. I regularly use netstat -b and netstat -ano and monitor my systems, as well as use wireshark to take a peek at traffic. I also use a free tool called Secunia PSI to scan my system of programs that have known vulnerabilities if at end of life cycle etc or patches that need to be applied. The secunia PSI has been pretty good in pointing out potential trouble spots vs having to research each and every program etc that I have to see if there are any exploits etc to have to correct. So with MS Updates taking care of the OS, Browser, etc, and Secunia PSI taking care of programs and other software out of date issues, I am not 100% protected, but better than just running and waiting for the next Black VNC type attack..lol

Solve : Possible to connect to the wii and computer??

Answer»

(I came here last time and got great help so I thought I would come again)

Since Comcast doesn't use wireless internet, I've been using an LAN adapter to play my Animal Crossing game ONLINE. The problem is, since I only have Ethernet cables with 2 ends, I can either connect to the computer or my wii. This was very frustrating to do while I played my wii game.

But...

In that big comcast box they sent us, I discovered a blue usb cord. I tried connecting it to my -Comcast interent black box thingie- and to my computer but it wont let me on the internet.

I only wanted to use the usb cord for my computer when I'm playing my wii with LAN but... Is this possible?

Sorry if I'm ignorant, I know absolutely nothing about computers so... Simple words please

Thank you for helping me.

P.S. I'm not sure if you actually needed to know my computer specs or something because this is an internet related problem so I didn't post mine.I used to have a modem that I connected my PS2 to and my computer.

The PS2 used a LAN cable, and the computer used a blue USB cable, just like yours.

To get the internet working on the PC, I had to install some drivers which came on the CD with the modem.

If you still have that CD, insert it and run it BEFORE plugging in the blue wire, if you don't, you may be able to download them from the manufacturers website.Oohh... So that's what that CD was for... Hehe.

Well... I downloaded the driver and the usb now works on my computer. The problem is, I connected the LAN cable to my Wii using the Wii LAN connector thingie and it still doesn't work. I got this error code: 52020 so I looked it up.

http://www.nintendo.com/consumer/wfc/en_na/ds/results.jsp?error_code=52020&system=Wii&locale=lang

Apparently, number 2 says that it is most likely unable to support more than one DEVICE at a time. So... I GUESS that's it?Another option is to get a router and an additional CAT5 cable....Huh?Quote from: Pleanie on July 07, 2009, 06:12:32 PM

...Huh?

Router is a (wireless router) that LETS you connect to the internet.

Cat5 cable is a network cable (like the ones you are using) (booster cable).

These websites are just to show you the products, I'm not suggesting you purchase them from these places.
Hope that helps Ohh... I used to have linksys (Before I kicked it over) as a wireless router. I see... Thank you for the information.

Do you have any suggestions for a cheaper router than linksys and works well. I don't need the wireless capability.Dlink make some good routers. To be fair most are wireless these DAYS. But they do non wireless. Not much difference in cost to be fair.

This is an English site though.

It depends where your from really.

Ook, thank you. It's probably not worth 30$+ for a router though.Quote from: Pleanie on July 08, 2009, 11:31:37 PM
Ook, thank you. It's probably not worth 30$+ for a router though.

They're one of the cheaper ones. They range from around $10 to over $100 (Or £10 to £100 in the UK) but it depends what brand, type, speed, how many ports, wireless etc. Also be sure to get an ADSL router, not a network router, I made that mistake once, couldn't find where to plug in the telephone line, because I couldn't!I happen to have Comcast as my internet provider and I have wireless in my house. I just purchased a wireless router and hooked it up to my Modem. Your Wii should have wireless capability so if you are buying a router any way you should go ahead and get a wireless one that way if you or some else ever brings over a laptop or other device that has wireless capabilities you will be all set up for it to work and you won't have to run a cable to your Wii.

To add to that, even if the OP was using DSL, it wouldn't be a problem to chain the DSL modem (or any type of broadband modem, minus perhaps cellular) to a network router's WAN or Internet port.

Solve : Complicated problem with a game/my PC, Need pro's help.?

Answer»

If your IP was banned, no one would be able to log onto the game in your house.Thats what I said.. both PC's at this house cannot log into the game.

The people who did log into my ACCOUNT, were at a different LOCATION then me, and have different ISP's or whatever...

So this being the case.. Does it sound like my IP range was banned? Didn't you say your friend could log on in your house? No sorry if I explained wrong.. My friend could log on his PC as my account which is supposed to be banned according to what it says when I attempt to log on from either two of my PC's here..

He lives in a whole different state. As well as the admin, he logged it on my "banned" account from his PC.

So it must be my ISP and not my PC.

But how do I fix this? I'm still waiting for the main admin/server host to reply to me Message.

EDIT:I'm pretty Sure Blues has it right from the WAY its sounds. He's really smart and good with PC's and figure things out.. I'll need to keep waiting on Crono to check into it.. Then it sounds like an IP Address Ban. Can you try creating a new account or have a friend try LOGGING in on your computer, just to make sure?Well thats just it.. my other account says its banned when I try to log in, And ALSO, When I type in just some Random Username/Password it still says its banned before It trys to log in.

So thats gotta be an ISP ban I guess. Just weird to me.. :/ Not sure what to do..

You saw how the Admin said "Its your fault Not ours , Fix your PC"
What a deuche.. For an Admin I'd think he'd figure that out. you guys and (Blues The Tech support Moderater) knows so much more then him, and he "programs" the game and trys to act smooth. :/I don't think it's an ISP ban, just an IP ban. If your ISP were banned, any player using the same ISP would be banned as well.

Provide their admin with your IP address and have him look at their records.Quote from: TylerDoom on July 08, 2009, 10:46:07 PM

2 people can log in from different PC's/ISP's.
And I can't log in with two PC's on the same ISP here.

So its gotta be my ISP right? But why did this just start after 7+ months of playing.. I don't understand at all.

Thanks.

You said that you let your brother log on using his computer? Does this mean that your brother also plays? If so, there may be a multiple account setting on the game which blocks any account which is found playing on the same IP as another account, even if not at the same time. This might be what has happened and would also explain why your friend and the admin could log on.Quote from: Carbon Dudeoxide on July 09, 2009, 02:22:08 AM

Yeah that's what it seems to be. Although I don't know the difference in the two ISP/IP. but I will have to wait for the Main Admin to check it out like you and Blues said.

Thanks for your time everybody, I appreciate it.Your ISP is the one who provides your internet service. (Internet Service Provider)

Your IP address is assigned to you by your ISP.

What's your IP? http://www.whatismyip.com/Quote from: TylerDoom on July 09, 2009, 03:16:52 AM

EDIT:I'm sure you noticed but I am very slow and ignorant when it comes to computers. Ok cool. Thats a good way to check what it is.. Hopefully The main Admin will get online and recieve my PM's about this and help me out.. Since the other dude, who acts like he knows so much about the game, cannot.

"Its your fault not ours, Fix your PC" Is what he said.

Solve : Random shutdown when Gaming in general?

Answer»

Well what makes my PROBLEM so different in this case is that. I am using a DESKTOP and with all correct specs and it is not too shoved into a small enough space that I would think it would over heat. but it is slightly confined and all my drivers and programs are updated. My computer runs fine while I am browsing or doing complex programs but only when I am gaming does it randomly shut down without any flicker or PAUSE or blue screen of death. And Before I have updated my comp and it seemed to get better...but now that is not even working ANYMORE. I wish to GAME!!! Can any one help me..? OH and P.S. The game does this every time no and it's roughly 25 minutes into the gaming session.Randomly shut down without warning... that's not good. Sounds really like a hardware issue-might be your PSU starting to fail and not providing a steady supply to the motherboard. Try running IntelburnTest on Standard to check for CPU stability, then run FurMark on the Burn-in test for 25min to check for GPU stability. If both fail then it is most likely either your motherboard or your PSU. If one fails then we have a suspect. It would be nice if you could post a screenshot of your temperatures while you are running the tests.

Solve : openBVE Graphics?

Answer»

Hi there,

I have been having a problem with openBVE.

On most ROUTES, after about 20 mins play, the GRAPHICS go all... weird.

I have been playing the ECML line route which is a BVE4 route which is compatible with openBVE. Again, after about 20 mins of play, the graphics went ODD. To see what I am talking about, see the ATTACHED .jpeg. In the attached screenshot, the black areas with what looks like a signal are meant to be trees.

I have searched the BVE forums, but come up with nothing.

I know BVE2/BVE4/openBVE are not directly compatible with Vista, but I have followed the installation instructions on the BVE website to ensure that it works.

Got any ideas?

I know that what I did was STUPID, STUPID & STUPID ..... any help would be very helpful..... Thanks Hello All! Well my problem went away.... Worse thing is.... Don't how I fixed it!.... Was going to do a repair on FSX which is a real pain.... had to do an updated back up of all my files(lots).... ran some software like GEX & UTX to check em out.... Went to fly one more time before the FIX & BINGO - all my original textures were back! & lookin good!.... There must have been a backup texture file somewhere that replaced the bad one.... who knows! So all's well that ends well..... if all my problems could be this easy I'd be a happy man! Thanks to all the viewers - to bad I can't tell ya how I fixed it LOL I've been having some texture problems with Flight Sim X (assuming that's what you mean by FSX).
Not sure what causes it, but it comes and goes.Hey Carbon Dudeoxide "How ya doin" Yes I do mean Flight Sim X.... Like I said I think my back up textures were in the Ground Environment X file & that did it, but I'm not sure..... As far as your textures go, I've found that Defragging once a week(If you fly alot)helps the whole FSX program RUN smoother. I also use a defrag program Ultimate Defrag 2008 from http:www.pcaviator.com that puts my FSX files on the out side of the HDD platter for high performance ....For Texture programs I would only go with the trusted one's, like Flight 1's Ultimate Terrain Products & GEX(Ground Environment X) head over to the flight one store & forum http://www.flight1.com ..... they have the FSX experts there.... Again I did a stupid thing by using a cheap program that caused me Hurt, but I came out lucky.... Hope my experience helped you! Be safe..... I don't play Flight Sim X a lot, so it doesn't really bother me. Thanks anyways.

I use Smart Defrag by IObit but I'll have a look at your suggestion. Smart Defrag is good..... I just like the Ult-De a little better.... FSX is the only game (not really a game) I run, it keeps your actual flying skills sharp.... That's why I went NUTS with the Texture thing.... I'm 63(soon to be 64) & disabled, so I can't pilot a plane ALONE..... My wife does like the Big Fish Games like Hidden Objects.... OK I've bored you to tears.... Thanks for your interest..... At one of the busiest airports in the worlds? I don't think so.... Hehe

I wonder if we're allowed to fly in their flight simulators......Hmmmm..... OH Come on now.... Do I need Windows XP Mode?
...Windows 7 has several built-in tools to help with program compatibility and Windows XP programs should be installed directly on Windows 7. Windows XP Mode runs many older Windows XP productivity programs and that are not natively compatible with Windows 7, thus helping realize COST savings and reduce possible operational downtime by extending the life of existing software. Solve : Problems with Lego Games?

Answer»

Hey there. I USE an HP Pavillion 513n from 2002, and have recently been experiencing problems with my Lego Games- namely Lego Indy, Lego Star Wars, and Lego Star Wars II. Oddly, Lego Batman is still FINE.

I try to put in the disc. It says that "WINDOWS is searching for LEGOIndy.exe. To find the file yourself, CLICK browse."

I try to find it, and cannot. The discs themselves are just fine. I bought a brand new Lego Star Wars II, and TRIED to re-install it. It didn't work.

Please help. These are my favorite games.

Have you checked in the bios that the machine can boot from a usb flash drive as the Windows7-USB-DVD-tool works a treat as I have used it on many ocasions

BB Win2Flash should work - I've used it many times. http://wintoflash.com/home/en/
And make sure to check again the boot order in your BIOS. You must be doing something wrong.

Solve : Prototype Start up issues?

Answer» HI guys.

This one is fustrating me to the point of nigh-on violence.

I recently got the game 'Prototype' and was genuinely exciteted to play it as I had seen some pretty awesome stuff in the various trailers.
I know this is going to sound really stupid but im out of options that i can think of.

First of I think its has to be stated that I am over 18, I can buy this game LEGALLY (and have done so), therefore why is it when I try to play this game it keeps telling me that I cannot access games with this restriction on parental controls

I am running Windows Vista 32-bit as a Administrator, which to my knowledge and according to the computer itself, has no Age restrictions placed on it.

At no point aside from Registration has Steam asked me my age and that alone should prove my age but apparently not.

I spent the last few hours downloading this game and I cant play it due to a absolutly silly reason like this.

I have never had any issues like this before, I have restarted my PC and frankly Im very angered at this, I was looking forward to playing this game...

I have attempted 'Run as Administrator' on both the Steam link and the Application I found in the steamapps under 'prototypef' I have created a seperate account with unlocked access to all ages and still it doesent work with the same reason 'Parental Restrictions'
As far as I am aware, Parental Control does not have any effect and according to my computer, is not active in anyway on my primary account (Administrator) my secondary account I set up to test (aptly named Prototype) at first had no Parental control either, the next time I set it up with allowances for all games. And still the same warning appeared.

However, this does not mean I have given up on Disabling the Parental Controls, but all signs point to the fact that according to Vista, on the administrator account, parental controls are infact disabled by default.

I have since gotten a second copy (this time not over steam) and the same happens. I have no idea whats going on.

Anyone? I tired talking to Steam Support, they bounced it to Activision, who bounced me to Microsoft and from there, back to Activision... Im running out of ideas of who to talk toBit of an odd one this mate never seen it before.
First things first have a quick gooses on this site to see if there is anything you can change then get back to us.

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial139.htmlHmm I have dabbled in this already, but, because I like this place alot, I'll have another stab at it... I'll try allowing it specifically .

In the meanwhile, Is their a code for advanced launch options (I am unsure or the proper name) sort of like -noagerestriction or -disableagecheck (I made those TWO up). This is for when I open the 'Properties' of the prototypef.exe and I have the 'target' box which shows the link;

"C:\Program Files\Steam\Steam.exe" -applaunch 3480"

Thats one I just pulled off my desktop (Its Peggle EXTREME)

I'm gonna keep on looking for you but have you tried a complete re-download? I know it's a pain in the rectum but sometimes... you know the script and because it's paid for there is no reason you should not be able to download again.Yup... Re-downloaded... still nothing.

That tutorial, unfortunately, didn't help, I already used It to try and de-activate them in the first placeSo you fall in to one of these then

http://www22.verizon.com/ResidentialHelp/FiOSTV/Guide/Parental+Controls/Questions/122554.htm

And we have followed all of these.

http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/windows/en-us/help/585539d0-0862-41e4-9b39-53467648efc51033.mspx

I'm not fully sure about this but check

http://www.intelliadmin.com/blog/2007/11/ie-parental-controls-how-to-remove-them.html

It's not exact but close to your problem.

Warning: this may damage your computer and I'm only offering options.Thank you or helping, you at least LISTENED, which is more then either of the support teams did...

I personally would rather not damage my computer... I did however bookmark the page. I will continue to try to find a solution to my issue. Again, thank YOUI'll keep looking for you mate. Any luck fixing it ? i'm also having the same problem , Prototype refusing to start with the restriction problem ( Parental Controls)

and in my case , i don't even have Parental control installed ( removed it using Vlite during installation of Vista )

and I own a LOT of games.... some rated M and etc... but never got this type of problem
Nope no progress, still mucking about with things though, so if I get anywhere, you'll be one of the first to know Quote from: strike101 on June 20, 2009, 07:37:24 AM

You don't even have Parental Controls Installed? wait just a tick...

This is looking like Activision's problem to be honest because according to the Microsoft guy I talked too, having disabled all Parental Controls should have solved this issue. Unfortunately I tried talking to Activision already and they were adamant that it wasn't their fault.tried a clean install of windows 7 this time , should have bought the retail version , i'm currently redownloading it on steam.....

and least it's good to hear that i'm not the only have experiencing the problemAny change? Does it work now?Only choice is to downgrade to XP.....

Actually, a lot of games include all of the files on the discs, whether they're meant to be changed or not.

For example, the Thai versions of both Battlefield 2 and The Sims 2, which come completely in Thai with no option to change the language through setup or option, can be forced to install in English instead.

For Sims 2, copy all of the files from the first disc to your hard drive. In the Autorun folder, edit autorun.cfg. In the list of languages there, simply change the current setting from 1 to 0 and the language you want from 0 to 1. Save it, run the installer, and the game will install in that language.

For Battlefield 2 and Special Forces, there's a patch out there that will allow you to change the language pack at anytime with some added options to the start menu, as they all get installed with the game.change game language from german to english ?

i found this , dont understand it , maybe it could help , its in the game folders

Using different language formats in NotepadNotepad allows you to create and open documents in several different formats: ANSI, UNICODE, big-endian Unicode, or UTF-8. These formats allow you to work with documents that use different character SETS.

By default, your documents will be saved as standard ANSI text.

Unicode is a superset of all the major scripts of the world. It includes character sets common to business and computer use. When you save a document in Unicode, you can use Unicode CONTROL characters to help with text flow and direction for languages such as Arabic and Hebrew.

Some fonts cannot display all of the Unicode characters. If you see any characters missing in your text file, you can change the font to one that includes the character. Generally, Microsoft Sans Serif is a good choice for Unicode characters.

The bytes (a unit of storage) in a word in a Unicode document created on a big-endian processor, such as the Macintosh, are arranged in an order opposite to that of the bytes in a word in a document created on an Intel processor. The most significant byte has the lowest address, with the word stored big end first. To make your documents accessible to users on these types of computers, save your Notepad file in the big-endian Unicode format.

UTF stands for Universal Character Set Transformation Format. UTF-8 is the 8-bit form of Unicode. Save your document in UTF-8 if you are using older transmission media that support only 8 bits of significant data within individual bytes.

See the Unicode Consortium Web site for more information on these formats.

Qaxo, seems interesting, I might try it and see if it works. There are some games out there that don't get all of the files though. COMMAND & Conquer 3, as far as I know, only includes language files specific to the local version (for example, the Thai version only includes the Thai files). There's no way to change this one that I've found.

Solve : Skyrim crashing to desktop.?

Answer»

Hello I just bought Skyrim and i am having trouble playing the game. i recently bought a new videocard "560 TI 820 clock" and the PROBLEM i had with the current and old video card was it
crashes randomly to the desktop closing the game and losing all progress. the AUTO detect setting set for high setting but i changed them to medium to see if the problem persist and it did.
ive reinstalled the game 3 times so far. all drivers are up to date. im at a loss as to why this is happening.

and help/advice is appreciated thanks.
Specs listed below....

motherboard - intel dp55wb
Processor - i5 2.67 Ghz cpu 750
HDD - 1TB western digital 7200 RPM
PSU - 700W fatality
Ram - 6 Gb DDR3 1333 Mhz (3x @ GB sticks)
Video card - 560 TI nvidia
OS - Windows 7 prof 64 bitNext time it crashes, try to write down the error message. Or go into the event log and see if you can find out what happened.Frequent random crashing seems to be a serious issue with Skyrim. Official "report your crash" thread sticky on their forums:
http://forums.bethsoft.com/index.php?/topic/1270631-crashes-during-gameplay/

37 pages of people posting about their crashes so far. Seems doing just about anything in this game will crash it. Surprised it got released if it's as bad as it looks from that thread. Reminds me of a beta test.

The game has only been out a little over two weeks, a lot of the crashing will probably GET fixed in the first patch after they find the cause for enough issues. There is no error message when it crashes where can i find the event log..?

ive been though pages of pages of sites and none of the fixes worked.. im looking through the link quaxo gave me maybe ill find SOMETHING there.

cant wait for first patch =)

Go to your start - run (or variation thereof) and type "mmc eventvwr.msc"

That will open up your event viewer and you should be able to find the error in there under Windows Logs, probably in the application log, but maybe in the system log. Here is one of the events i was able to find....

Faulting application name: TESV.exe, version: 1.1.21.0, time stamp: 0x4ea9b052

as if it never happen. You should have a look at this page, it's got fixes for most Skyrim-related issues.

Concerning the crashing to desktop:

15# Crash To Desktop Fix

Go to Start > Control Panel > Sound.
In the Playback tab, right-click on Speakers (or whatever has a green tick next to it), then click Properties.
In the advanced tab on this new window, select 24 bit, 44100Hz (Studio Quality) in the DROP down menu.I noticed that there is 3"sound" fixes one at 44100HZ 24 bit , one at 44100HZ 16 bit and, one at 96000HZ 16 bit. ive tried all 3 and none worked.
ive also tried the nvidia control pannel to change settings that also DIDNT work.
i tried setting the shading settings to low and all other settings on medium and nothing.

They did release a patch to fix some glitches but it didnt fix the CTD problem.
hoping they will release more patches soon.

If there is any others fixes you come across i would be happy to give them a shot.
i should add that it only crashes maybe once a hour seems to be the average time.Just a update... they have released patch 1.2 and 1.3 and still the issue persist.

You don't own the game. go buy it. It WON'T WORK OTHERWISE.it might work, but if you are to be playing multiplayer, it most likely won't work.

And why is the topic labeled Spaceship?

He wanted the answer at Warp speed.sorry, Myst, Spaceship is subjectsorry" Myst, spaceshipIf you've never played the original Myst, his post might not make sense.

To the OP:
When does this happen? When you press the keys on the piano?

Keep in mind, Myst is an old game. The "updated" VERSION that was supposed to run on Windows XP is finicky and still has problems.

You need to set compatibility for Windows 98 or Windows XP since you're running Vista. Try that and see if it fixes both issues, this one and the one you POSTED in the other thread.

I tried to play the new version designed for XP on an XP machine and always had problems. Never could get off the first ISLAND because of it.

Solve : Grand Theft Auto V - Trailer released.?

Answer»

The trailer for the upcoming GTA game has been released today. It seems that the new game is going to take place back in the old, good San Andreas (Los Santos, San Fierro, Las Venturas).

http://www.rockstargames.com/newswire/article/19461/grand-theft-auto-v-trailer.html
or http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QkkoHAzjnUs&feature=youtu.be

Rockstar seems to have worked a bit more on the graphics. We don't have any official info on the requirements and/or the release date. What are your thoughts about the new game? Personally, I would prefer to see a new GTA based on Vice City. Better story, better people, better MUSIC and better (we wish) graphics - pure awesomeness.I have to agree with you with a larger Vice City project...

My suggestion would be to make a much larger game like World of Grand Theft Auto "WoGTA"...lol
It would be rather interesting to allow players to act as Good Guys and Bad Guys for similarity to Alliance/Horde or Horde/Alliance based of your preference as to who is bad and good..lol

Have one faction that is for Good and the other for Evil intentions. Some people can play as police like Mad Max as a cop who gets to chase down evil thugs, while other players are the thug CHARACTERS who have to out PVP through vehicular acrobatics and driving skill to try to get there car to the safety of the chopshop without the Mad Max like player tail following them to the shop busting the crime ring. You can even have the Role Players live a SIMS like life around the Good and Evil in the world and call for help when there is an intruder etc, or take the law into their own hands and waste an intruder with a 50 cal.

You can even have people who play on both sides of the fence as a neutral faction. Those who are crooked cops or thugs who want to be robin hood.

A game like this would be limitless and hours of entertainment. But I suppose the biggest problem would be that 3/4 or more would rather be crooks than cops. So in a virtual world like this it would be an imbalanced virtual nightmare world where crime would run rampant.

I have spent many hours playing Vice City and GTA SA. My favorite feature of both of those is that you dont have to stick with the story line and follow a linear path thru the game. I like that you can do whatever you want, interact with whomever you want in that virtual world, and get insane stunt bonus's as well as do whatever else comes to mind like seeing how long of a car chase you can go before the cops kill you, or you parachute down to get the bazooka and cause havoc from the roof of a building. In addition, I also like that they made SA so you can park your favorite car into the garage and save it, as well as run the racetrack etc to unlock the nascar and monster truck. There is one stretch of road on SA that ends with an on ramp and off ramp, and if you drive center and catch the 45 degree dirt bank you can get some serious air on your car and when it crash lands hope to get out and run before it explodes. The time slow effects when you do crazy stuff is cool too, with automotive acrobatics..lol

In addition to all that great gameplay the radio stations with great choice of music stations and funny commercials like rusty browns ring donuts, ammunation, and sissy SPRITZ hair spray, on top of countless others is just great.

Just hope they keep making these games for PC as for a video card upgrade is cheaper than buying the next latest console system to run the games. I made the switch from Console gamer to PC Gamer around 2001. I own a PS1 from like 1998 and a PS2 that I bought used for $40 off of my youngest brother who upgraded to PS3. But its far better for me to have everything from my PC vs having to dig the console system out, connect the cables, and fire it up.

I still have yet to buy GTA 4. A friend of mine told me it wasn't worth the money after he bought his copy and it first came out for like $40. Satisfied with SA and not really needing the newest edition, I ran with his advice and stuck with playing GTA SA over and over again, hours and hours of entertainment and DISCOVERY of new stuff hidden etc.

LOL the best part about GTA is the trainers that include a gravity gun, walking speed/car speed modification, telekinesis, walk through walls, spawn random objects like ramps, etc.
www.youtube.com/watch?v=H9cDD2fnXfY
If GTA V shipped with photorealistic graphics like the above iCeHancer Reality mod for GTA IV on PC...The trailer is very nice and this will be much better than previous versions and will exist with new cheats and weapons and with the new changes so i am excited about it.

Carbon's advice is fairly clear on determining the graphics adapter, Start->Run, dxdiag and click the "Display" tab. the display adapter info should be DISPLAYED there.the poster has yet to say but I suppose it wouldnt be the main cause, but I have it were I installed the sims 2 an meet requirments but cause I used on board video it seemed to lag.yup ur quite true ma Ram is only 512MB wher as it requires more..

Bummer me..ddr ram I suppose it uses isnt that expense depending on were you GET it. tirgerdirect or geeks would have it.

Hey everyone...

I just downloaded the Battlestations Pacific PC demo and I have a problem. My pc exceeds most of the minimum requirements for the game YET when i play the game it runs at 3-5 fps. I even set all of the settings at minimum and had no success. Quote from: apple266 on JUNE 07, 2009, 07:10:03 PM

My pc exceeds most of the minimum requirements for the game

What does it not meet?minimum requirements for the game...

Minimum:

OS: MICROSOFT Windows XP (admin rights required)/Microsoft Windows Vista (admin rights required)
Processor: Intel Pentium 4 3+GHz or AMD Athlon 2.5+GHz
Memory: 1GB (Windows XP) / 2GB (Windows Vista) system memory
Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce 6 series 6800GT (or better) / ATI 1800XT (or better)
Hard Drive: 8 GB Free Space
Sound: Direct X 9.0c compatible sound card and drivers

My pc specs are listedI know what your gonna say but hay lets start at the beginning because after a 10min search around for you I'm coming up with nothing.
Have you updated your driver recently. This is the only thing I'm getting back at the moment.I haven't updated any drivers recently but i don't understand how this game can be this slow and choppy, my system has been running cod 4 at 70 fps since i can rememberIt may be the download to be fair. How good was the source?I downloaded it off of Steam so I'd say pretty goodCan you start by may be updating your driver first. Or seeing if there is an available update. I can't find anything else on the web to explain and I've already spent over 30mins looking. The only thing I get back is an update of drivers. (But that is your choice to do)which drivers do you think i should update?Your graphics drivers if you want to do it!well i updated to the latest version of my nivida grahics drivers, it gave my pc a higher resolution and made everything a lot sharper but all it did to my game was make it run at a whopping 3 fps now lol an improvement of 2 so i really dont know why it is running so slow

Solve : Minecraft?

Answer»

I haven't a clue what Minecraft! May be a stupid question but could someone tell me! LolMinecraft is an open world game that allows the user to mine resources and build whatever they can think of using a series of blocks that can be made from dirt, wool, wood, and dozens of other materials. In addition to building structures there are hundreds of in-game items that can be created.

Good video showing how to survive first day in survival mode: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0VWnQHS-ffs
Official site: http://www.minecraft.net/Minecraft is surprisingly deeper than I thought. Some videos on youtube show a virtual CPU that has been constructed and shows it operating. A simple search for minecraft CPU should do it.Quote from: Linux711 on December 05, 2011, 05:56:43 PM

Minecraft is surprisingly deeper than I thought. Some videos on youtube show a virtual CPU that has been constructed and shows it operating. A simple search for minecraft CPU should do it.

Yeah, a lot of what some people think of minecraft is probably based on the (IMO) crap "classic" version, which is basically nothing more than a finite world where you can place blocks that have no actual purpose but aesthetics. It was a ALU created using 'redstone' in Minecraft that made me want to try out the paid variant.

As it stands now, there are a few significant parts of minecraft.

1. Exploration

This is pretty critical. And you are going to need to do at least some of this at the start to gather your beginning materials. The world is for practical purposes infinite, so getting more resources is merely a matter of exploring new areas, spelunking and searching the new cave systems you find, and so forth. This also lends itself to

2.Mechanisms

Having to come out of a deep, long mine with a fully loaded inventory on a CONSTANT basis can be a huge pain. You can use some of the resources you acquire to build things like minecart tracks; so you can either just ride a minecart home. Or, you could build it so that you can send a "chest cart" with your stuff back to your house, and at your house you could have various mechanisms that will redirect incoming chest carts into various stopping areas. Then when you come home you can grab their contents and place them into your "normal" stationary treasure chests.

In multiplayer, I find the most fulfilling use of mechanisms is in creating traps for people that are trying to steal my stuff. I made a secret room with a particular arrangement, and then purposely allowed a known "theif" player to follow me. (so he knew about my "secret" room.) Later, I used "sneak" mode (shift, which makes your nametag invisible to other players if there is a wall between you) to watch as he entered that room, clearly with the intent to steal the treasures he suspected I had there. The hallway eventually lead to a obsidian room, with an open iron door, (which requires redstone power to keep open). He was too distracted by what he perceived as a prize- a block of diamond, one of the rarest and most sought after materials in the game. By this time I had followed him and was now stood outside the door, and watched as he broke the diamond and collected it. This detached a Redstone torch (power source) that was attached to the rear of that block, which stopped the power flow to the door, closing it. That torch breaking also allowed a block of sand to fall, which held up another torch, which held up more sand, etc, causing a cascade reaction. The ceiling fell. He was safe. He turned around and saw me outside the door, which was now closed. I could almost hear the gears working in his head trying to figure out why the door would be closed. Until he looked up and saw the wall of lava that was now going to fall on his head. It was most gratifying watching them try to break the iron door in time to escape and fail miserably (since I machined the trap in such a way as to not allow that). Was totally worth the 9 diamond that I used to make the block.

Mechanisms can be made for nearly anything; semi-automatic wheat, melon, reed, and pumpkin farms, machines designed to kill ENEMIES or make them easier for you to kill, such as the "blaze cone" idea which is used for killing one of the enemies added in a recent patch, the "Blaze" (I made one of these .

At the moment it is one of the few games I've played consistently over the past year since I first bought it in Alpha.

I'm trying to play Lf2 (Little Fighter 2) network game but I don't want to use another VPN provider such as Hamachi so I was wondering if I CREATE a VPN on windows, would I be able to play a network game? You would need to setup your machine to ACT as a VPN server. Then others COULD connect to it and you should be able to play LAN games. It is not SOMETHING I've ever done personally but the instructions I've linked to below seems pretty straight forward.
Btw. depending on the game and the amount of people you want to play with, it might require a fast internet connection on your part, since you will be acting as the server for all the traffic.

There is also Gamer's Internet Tunnel.

Intel video chipsets are horrible for gaming. Depending on what your old laptop had, this may be the reason games like Dawn of War and Warcraft 3 are jittery....and in general, laptops are not designed for gaming...Also some older games do not like duo core. To play Thief 2 I have to turn off 1 of my CPU's to make it run properly. I can HELP you do that if you want it's not hard and your only turning the 2nd CPU off for that game not for the WHOLE system.Okay so I figured out the problem. Turned out I set my performance settings to low to save power for a car journey Got rid of the general jumpyness on a lot of the games at least. Thanks anyway.

Solve : I would like to raise my ping from a game..?

Answer»

Hi people from this forum. I would like to ask for suggestions because i am playing soldier front game and INSIDE the game there is a so called "PING" which i think specifies the USER connection between the user and the server. I would like to raise the ping of my character to it's 500 which is maximum and without going down but just on the stable ping. Right now i am using ProxyCap and Your Freedom program (your-freedom.net) which really raises my ping to 500. I am having a problem in the future because my account from those sites i have downloaded are just limited user so i think maybe few weeks from now i will no longer enjoy use the programs especially on your-freedom program because there is no way i think to CRACK it. Any alternative program i can use just for FREE on for lifetime use so that ONLY on SOLDIER FRONT game i can raise my PING? of course also without disturbing the internet speed of my browsers because i wanna have very LAG on the game but still normal speed on internet browsing. Thanks a lot people. I am really a FAN of this site because one of my problem was solved here. xD ...why would you want to create latency? Though the objective was to minimize latency for playing online?well because while playing i want to unplug my ethernet cord then while the players on my screen got stuck up i will bring my character from our base to the enemy's base then plug in again the ethernet cord so that i will be back again and the player's will resume playing. I have found out that the greater the ping and the more stable it gets like being 500 forever the safer for me to do the bug for a long period of time on going to their base and kill them while they are not moving. actually the bug i am doing they called it tapping, and if i got normal ping with no YOUR FREEDOM and no PROXYCAP i will not able to tap over 10 seconds because if i will not plug in again the cord beyond 10 seconds i will get disconnected from the game. but with your freedom and proxycap i am able to tap as long as 1 minute without getting disconnected. 1 minute is already enough for me to go from our base to their base. thanks anyway to your reply Quote from: lloydi12345 on June 29, 2009, 09:25:13 AM

Sure we can discuss them. Nathan would prefer it if we send them to Google for their own cheats though. I don't blame him, who wants people posting here because they are too lazy to look for their own cheats. It's not like the game is malfunctioning. Did not realise he is hacking my bad. Cheats yes other stuff big no no.Quote

He has actually told me that.Should read some topics a bit more closely sometimes..

Intel chipsets are useless for gaming. Even the highest rated Intel chipset pales in comparison to most ATI and Nvidia cards. If you want to game, I suggest you choose an ATI or Nvidia card. Thanks i had idea it was the problem. How can i attach other graphic card with my current processor or do i have to buy a new one?If you are buying a graphic card , it has to be FIXED on mother board on the PCIE slotoh, ok thanks. Maybe you can recommend what graphics card should i buy for gaming for around 200 dollars?post a complete spec of your pc. it would helpThe Dell Optiplex 390 comes in 3 form factors (case sizes). Which one did you GET?
http://www.dell.com/us/enterprise/p/optiplex-390/pd

If you got the largest one, any card should fit in there without a problem. If you got either of the two smaller cases, you'll need a low profile (shorter) card bracket (some cards come with them, some don't). With any of these cases, you might run into heat problems.

If you upgrade to a new video card, you will also need to get a new power supply. Even the largest of the three forms only has a 265 watt power supply. You're going to want 500 watts at least.

Your computer has an IntelHD 2000 chipset. That computer was put together with business applications in mind, not games.
Look at this list and you can see how it compares to the ATI and Nvidia cards. It's more than halfway down the list (sorted by benchmark rating from the top down). NOTICE the Intel chipsets don't even come in until about halfway down the list, the 2000 even further down.

I'd install more Ram, 2 Gig for Windows 7 is minimum, when playing games.

He already has 2GB. The most he can have in that setup is 3GB anyway with Windows 7 32-bit.Physical Memory LIMITS: Windows 7 http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/aa366778%28v=vs.85%29.aspx

The following table specifies the limits on physical memory for Windows 7.
VersionLimit on X86

Windows 7 Ultimate

4 GB

Windows 7 Enterprise

4 GB

Windows 7 Professional

4 GB

Windows 7 Home Premium

4 GB

Windows 7 Home Basic

4 GB

Windows 7 Starter

2 GB
It can recognize 4GB, but it can't use it all.I'd be getting more Ram, but that's just me I suppose.
By the way, onboard video Ram takes up some of that maximum Ram anyway.
So ideally 4 Gig of ram, plus an addon good Video card.
Oh and don't use heavy resourced resident protecting Antivirus/firewalls, like Norton, McAfee, even horrible AVG (IMO)Ah. I've heard that 64bit Windows computers are better than 32Bit for gaming and other programs. I myself have a 64bit and it works like a charm! The problem is your Intel(R) HD Graphics Family Card. It is no good for games.
2000.
