Solve : Sims 3 - Plugged in, not charging? |
|
Answer» The short question: When i play the sims 3 on my laptop, if I need to plug it in to charge, it says "Plugged in, not charging", but only when the sims is running, help?! I have the same problem! I dont know what to do my laptop keeps shutting down from low battery...Don't hijack threads, go start your own thread.Teacup, this might seem a little bit convoluted, it's really late. Start the game running on battery. When the charge level starts to drop, plug the laptop in, and remember or write down what the charge level was. Let it sit for a bit, then turn the game off and see if the batteries charge level has changed. Let us know the result of this.Quite possibly its running off of external power. I've noticed in both xp and vista it tends to do that regardless of it being a game or not. In all cases i've encountered that problem it automatically fixes itself.Hi, My son bought Sim3 yesterday and has played it continuously ever since on a Dell laptop running Vista. His problem is that his laptop keeps shutting itself down......no warning....just shuts down. Has ANYONE else experieneced this or have any advice? Thanks figroll, please start your own thread for support. |

Solve : Skyrim failing to load saves (Xbox 360)? |
|
Answer» So the other day I was playing Skyrim on my Xbox and after resting and the game doing an autosave, I received an error stating that the disc could not be read, and to try cleaning it. So I took out the disc and it looked fine, but I cleaned it with a cloth anyway and put it BACK in. There were no scratches, and the disc was WORKING fine for a month and a half - so I didn't think anything of it. My xbox started up, the game loaded right away to the title screen, but when I went to "Continue" it would give the same error SAYING the disc could not be read and to try cleaning it. |

Solve : Need advice on getting new Desktop? |
|
Answer» Hey guys sorry if this is the wrong forum for this, i'm trying to get or make a new Desktop my budget is about $800 i'm a gamer and would love to make one to play newer games like BF3 on good settings - any help would be appreciated thank you. For $800 you could build a good system, however you could also pick up say a desktop computer for $400 to $600 and perform an upgrade to that ( Video Card and maybe also Power supply ) and be able to play that game as well as many others. Well guys if you really want the new desktop than you must follow these specs Sorry, but there are alot better specs out there than this one. Solve : Star Wars: Jedi Knight II - Jedi Outcast? |

Answer» I have recently downloaded Jedi Outcast for PC, and COPIED it to flash drive for my other PCs. However, I've hit a bump, this PC does not like the game. I cannot run JediOutcast.exe because it says it's not installed, and I cannot run jk2sp.exe because it tries to run in demo mode, but it's not a demo. This computer has no OPTICAL drive, and no virtual optical drive either. How might I get the latter of the two executables to run properly?Looks like you hit the copyright BARRIER. Solve : Weird Skyrim glitch.? |
|
Answer» Hi guys, My directory messed up the other day and I deleted it, with my saves untouched and by messed up I meant I couldn't install mods because Nexus Mod Manager wouldn't let me change the directory path. So I reinstalled the game and went onto it with my mods on and it said something about my save and that some of the content may be missing and my hands were pale blue and there were chunks of water gone, so I turned off my mods and went back on, this time without any message but when I got in game my hands were pale blue and chunks of water were gone again. I really don't feel like starting again and I have reinstalled the game again but no luck. If ANYONE can help I WOULD be grateful, thankyou in advance.Sounds like a corrupted save game but I don't play SKYRIM so I wouldn't know if it could be related to something else. You might WANT to ask on the OFFICIAL forum. |

Solve : How to change game resolution? |
|
Answer» Dear Gamers, Is there a reason not to use the in-game facility for changing the resolution? Quote Turns out my computer supports only till 1440 * 900. Now when I try to start the game a portion of the screen goes black and bit can be seen of the desktop on the right hand side. I haven't actually seen any modern games do this more but I guess it still happens.Quote from: Raptor on January 17, 2012, 09:57:03 AM I haven't actually seen any modern games do this more but I guess it still happens. When I saw "Try to start the game" I interpreted that as starting the actual game; that is, it would still show fine in menus. A lot of games use a standard resolution (800x600 often) for their menu screens, and ANOTHER for in-game. Though I don't know which category COD falls in. |

Solve : Rome total war? |

Answer» Hi guy's quick ONE this hopefully. Just bought RTW for my laptop FULL well knowing I may have issues playing it EVEN THOUGH I more than meet the requirements. Starting off the game played shockingly slow almost unplayable, you know the one where your MOUSE jumps about 2in across the screen every 2-3 seconds. I've reduced everything to minimum on video which has helped because the mirage 3 apparently does not handle these games well. Just wondering if it is worth setting the games affinity to CPU 0 only and dropping CPU 1? Any ideas if that would be worth bothering with? Cheers in advance |

Solve : Batman Arkham Asylum resolution change? |
|
Answer» Dear Experts, The variety of graphics options in Arkham Asylum is respectable, but compared to what we know of the Unreal Engine 3 technology, there could have been a LOT more. The entire configuration interface happens OUTSIDE of the game, in a submenu on the game’s launcher. The first time a player runs the game, the launcher will appear automatically. From then on, however, double-clicking the game’s icon will send the player directly into the game, with no ability to manage graphics options once inside. To change these video options after the first run, you must right-click the game’s icon and select the "Launcher" option, then click the "SETTINGS" menu item. From that interface, players can manage graphics options, movement controls, and ACTION controls.thnx raptor. notice the increase in your thanks.Quote from: XtrGamer on January 19, 2012, 04:35:30 AM thnx raptor. notice the increase in your thanks. Solve : Battlefield 3 PUNKBUSTER Error!? |
|
Answer» Hello!, Thanks for viewing! Checking user is Administrator OKI went into system32 and found the file and tried to open it and change security settings but eventhough I am admin it states I do not have the appropriate permissions to access the item... SO! If anyone can help me in ANY way it would be much appreciated! I have tried disabling my firewall and allowing it through it. I have tried safe mode, It seems to install correctly until the installer reaches the part where it trys to open the service, it cant because i am in safemode.. And in safe mode I can modify the file in system32. Thanks! Computer Information: Quote OS NameMicrosoft Windows 7 Ultimate "failed an authenticity check" usually means that you have a corrupt file, either due to tampering to due to a problem with your computer causing a corrupt download and installation. So this corrupt PnkBstrA installation attempts to communicate with the PB servers, resulting in you unable to play online. All I can think of is re downloading the PunkBuster setup file, from a different computer, and then installing it via USB drive.I'll try that, I wonder what would be causing it though. When I run the exe in a sandbox it seems to get past the authenticity error. (EDIT) Still nothing. I still get a authenticity error... I dont know what to do anymore. I have used all my tricks..In a sandbox... is it possible that some program is accessing the exe, like an antivirus program? Try disabling your antivirus/add an EXCEPTION for the exe..Unfortunately, I have tried that. I am running commodo internet security. How would I find out what is causing it or what is accessing it. It is the computer, I tried it on another computer I have and it worked like a charm...It usually fails to communicate if you're BLOCKING Punkbuster somehow. I suppose some overly eager virusscanners would do so. You might also want to make sure the Punkbuster service is running and that Punkbuster is up to date. Also check your firewall settings and make sure the firewall isn't blocking Punkbuster's access to the internet. |

Solve : recommend some games? |
|
Answer» i am using an p3 machine and an second gen. core i3. please recommend some good games for my old p3. The Pentium III is a pretty outdated CPU which will probably only run old games like Quake, the Cube engine, Doom, etc. Your graphics isn't that great either, 32MB of video RAM is way behind the times. A P3 machine of that speed should run plenty of games. Obviously, nothing modern. I believe since I had to "game" with a 350Mhz K6-2 for a number of years, I can offer some relevant (if anecdotal) recommendations for games. For the record, the machine I had was: AMD K6-2 350Mhz 3D-Now processor MVP3G-M (iirc) motherboard Video Card varied; it CAME with a ATI 3D-RAGE Pro Turbo AGP (8MB VRAM) Sound card was some standard Creative Labs PCI card. Network card was a SMC card, but I hardly had that machine connected to a network. 512MB of Memory, but found it faster with 256MB due to limitations of the cacheable DRAM size in the chipset. Games I played without issues: Duke Nukem 3D Quake Quake II Quake III Need For Speed II, III, High Stakes, Porsche Unleashed NES emulation (only emu that ran at a reasonable speed (aside from NESticle in DOS mode) was jNES) SNES emulation (with the Rage pro card, I usually got 18/60 fps; however after upgrading the card I got 40/60 which was a lot better) And of course Doom (which I played using the "Doom Legacy" Windows Port) ran fine. Most DOS games would as well, but I avoided DOS versions like the plague on account of running them on a windows system being a gigantic pain in the *censored*. (Also, I had a laptop that ran DOS/Win31 that was perfectly setup for running DOS games via a CONFIG.SYS menu choice, and a 75Mhz Pentium was plenty for most DOS games). Now to be fair the framerates probably weren't what a lot of people would like. Quake III was pretty much unplayable even to me with the Rage Pro. However, After I upgraded to a Radeon 7000, I could play nearly any game I had installed at full speed. Naturally, depending on how the games were written, some of them bottlenecked on the CPU, but a lot of the processing for graphics took place on the Graphics card which meant games became a lot more playable. (And, most importantly, it actually supported OpenGL properly, unlike the ATI card whose OpenGL Support was... well, hilariously inadequate). Given the information you've provided though, it's difficult to really compare. If the graphics is on-board, it might be using "host-based" processing, same with the Audio, which basically means it uses the CPU as a DSP and GPU, which takes processor capability away from everything else. At 1Ghz, though, you ought to have some to SPARE, particularly with older games like those I've mentioned. the 32MB Graphics card is hardly a limitation in that context, since 32MB was considered only something a "high-end" gamer would have in their machine around the time the system was released. And, since my own machine ran with a meagre 96MB of RAM (under windows XP) and I didn't have huge issues with the games above, memory is probably no issue either. Aside from the games I've mentioned above I can't really offer many recommendations. What you can do is look up some games released around the 1998-2001 era, which will work perfectly on that machine, and see what you like. EDIT: Quote You can go to http://www.canyourunit.com to see a list of games you will be able to run.On another note, I avoid this website like the plague and refuse to recommend it to anybody. For one thing, it says that I can't run half the games I have installed (Just Cause 2, GTA IV) but they run perfectly fine. And it says I can run other games that have higher requirements (Saints Row 2) just fine. Another point is that the site caters more to modern games. Note that the only Quake Game in their list is "Quake 4" and the earliest Need for Speed game in the list seems to be "Most Wanted", this paired with the sites complete inability to actually give accurate output makes me reluctant to do anything but dismiss it as a useless sideshow, at least in it's current form. EDIT 2: Another interesting tidbit with regards to the K6-2; while typically it would run fine, I actually managed to get it to overheat on at least 3 occasions. (the little beepy siren went off) after rebooting I would find the CPU temp often in excess of 90 degrees. Turns out (after replacing the CPU years later) that the little thermal pad between the CPU and heatsink and practically rotted away. Strangely it only ever overheated on a single level of a single game, the "Overlord" level of Duke Nukem 3d. Even stranger, it was always after I opened a specific door. Odd. Quote from: Transfusion on December 25, 2011, 04:18:36 AM The Pentium III is a pretty outdated CPU which will probably only run old games like Quake, the Cube engine, Doom, etc. It's a fair bit better than that. Doom and Quake both ran very well on my old 486 DX4 100Mhz with 8MB RAM and a 4MB Trident video card. Mechwarrior II (the old DOS version), Diablo, Starcraft, Command & Conquer, a maybe a few games from that era (or shortly after) would run on that.Quote from: quaxo on December 26, 2011, 02:28:27 AM Doom and Quake both ran very well on my old 486 DX4 100Mhz with 8MB RAM and a 4MB Trident video card.I still have the Quake Pre-release installed on my Pentium 133 Mhz machine After the DX4 I had a Pentium II, though I can't remember the Mhz on it. I also had a 486 100Mhz laptop that would play all of those. His specs meet the minimum requirements of most (if not all) games publish prior to 2004-2005, which includes a number of very good games like: Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six 3: Raven Shield and its expansions Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon The Journeyman Project (any of the series) Warcraft 3: Reign of Chaos and The Frozen Throne Civilization 3 Heroes of Might and Magic IV and any of the ones before it Any of the main Ultima series (I-IX) Medal of Honor: Allied Assault and its expansions Red Faction Final Fantasy VII (PC version) Simcity 2000 & 3000 Halo: Combat Evolved Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds Battlezone Star Trek: Armada The Sims and its expansions Jagged Alliance 2 Unreal Check the minimum system requirements of any of those games and I'll bet that system meets or exceeds them. Age of Empires II: the Age of Kings Age of Empires II: the Conquerors (need the above to run this one, but it is slightly better) Any of the Age of Empire games will be a lot of fun (trust me), but you probably won't be able to run the AOE3. |

Solve : stutter in 80% of my games? |
|
Answer» HI guys. so you think insufficient power could be the reason for the stutter? Well, it's a brand PSU but it is a bit low for a high-end system LIKE that. I think a minimum of 600W would be more suitable. There seems to be some kind of monitoring software available for your PSU.. Did you install that to see what it says? Get the latest version from Gigabyte. Also, you should diagnose your hard drive with Hard Disk Sentinel, since it's used, and you should disable any onboard video you may have. Not sure what option your friend is on about, I only work with AMD. All options are mentioned in the manual, though. Are you using default settings on everything? Did you reset your BIOS to defaults after your over- and underclocking stint? ok so when the runnin "ptuner" which is the software for the psu, it says the computer is only using 170w max when i was running like 2 different games at the same time of which one crysis 2. maybe im not reading correct? but it did say peak "w" was 170. i havnt reset my bios, im guessing ill try that next. also tried uninstalling the onboard video card on several occasions, to no avail... really hoping its just that the g card doesnt function properly on this m board or soemthing. any other thoughts? any idea on why fraps recording stops the frame sutter? thanks for the help so far!Hm, that is a bit low. Of course, there's no telling if the software is in any way correct. I've never actually seen this software myself, just noticed it in a review of your PSU. The PSU got high appraisal but the software was considered buggy. Did you set the power saving scheme of Windows to performance? As for disabling the onboard videocard, do this from the BIOS. Deleting the driver will just cause it to be reinstalled. Your videocard is two generations old. How does it run games from its own generation? ah ok, well is there any other software you can suggest that i should monitor ppwer consumption? windows power options was set to 'balanced'. well, not all games are stutterring, but most are. world of warcraft doesnt, deadspace 2 doesnt, borderlands doesnt. crysis 2 does, skyrim does, dead island does, deus ex human revolution does. some games i cant paly because the graphics are all messed up, im guessing this points towards gfx card issues. the witcher 2, for example, is just all orange when i get PAST the cinematics and into the first gameplay. the thing is, skyrim never used to frame stutter on my old pc with the same gfx card. i tried putting all the skyrim gfx settings on the same as they were on my old pc (except resolution which was 1400x900, but im now palying at 1920x1080) and i see a higher fps (40-60) but still choppyness and stutterring that makes it less enjoyable that 18-25 fps with no stutter. i tihnk after resetting bios options, i will procede to put a friends graphics card in the system and see if that removes the stutter, wihhc i guess could confirm the gfx card as an issue. ps. ive looked so hard but cant find any option to disable on board gfx in the bios. i can only set primary display to pci x16/ pci/ pcix8 etc.. Quote well, not all games are stutterring, but most are. world of warcraft doesnt, deadspace 2 doesnt, borderlands doesnt. crysis 2 does, skyrim does, dead island does, deus ex human revolution does. Quote the thing is, skyrim never used to frame stutter on my old pc with the same gfx card. I think your videocard is the problem. It's 4th gen and you listed a bunch of games that do run well, those came out around the time your videocard was released. The other games are relatively new and came out around the time 5th and 6th gen came out. I'd recommend purchasing a 6770. Good budget card. Anything above that will naturally be faster. If all your other hardware checks out and your Windows installation is clean, then it's probably the aging videocard. Quote ah ok, well is there any other software you can suggest that i should monitor ppwer consumption? Nah, we don't normally do that sort of thing with software. I was just curious about the application. This doesn't seem to be a PSU problem. Although 550W is sort of minimum, it is a decent PSU. You might want to do a wattage calculation here to see if a new videocard would change the demand: http://extreme.outervision.com/psucalculatorlite.jsp (set it to 30% capacitor aging and 90% TDP) Quote ps. ive looked so hard but cant find any option to disable on board gfx in the bios. i can only set primary display to pci x16/ pci/ pcix8 etc.. It's under advanced BIOS features -> onboard video. Set it to the below: Enable If No Ext PEG Activates the onboard graphics only when no PCI Express graphics card is installed. i tihnk i agree with you. thanks for all the help. am going to try swapping gfx cards and see if that makes a difference |

The "2 GB of graphics RAM!!!!11!1one1!" is nothing more than a marketing gimmick. First of all... http://www.nvidia.com/page/turbocache.html a portion of that RAM comes from your system, and second, such a weak graphics card won't be able to fully utilize that amount of RAM. Note that it has a 750 GB HDD, whereas the custom-built has a 1000 GB one. So now its your decision. You can have the experience of building your own PC, and get a nice-looking (perhaps even a little flashy, lol) uncramped gamer case (The Asus chassis uses the Micro-ATX form factor, and I would be slightly concerned about overheating...) or you can get a compact little unobtrusive Asus case. With a smaller hard drive. The minimum graphics card I would opt for is a HD 5850/GTX 460/560 that will give you a measure of future-proofing. http://www.dell.com/us/p/alienware-x51/fs I normally don't recommend Alienware computers, but the X51 with the i5-2320, GTX 555, 1 TB HDD, 6 GB RAM seems particularly appropriate for our budget... ($949.99) and has WiFi N too... but I wouldn't get the GT 545 version. It should be noted that The Witcher was optimized rather poorly, so even on a decent system, it still may not run very smoothly. |

Solve : Cannot Uninstall an improperly installed game (Can't play it either)? |
|
Answer» I bought a new computer a few months ago, and today I decided to install one of my old games on it, "Icewind Dale". Not sure when exactly it was made, but I know it's pretty old (not the disk itself, which I bought new this year, the game is old). It brought up the menu and I selected "Install". The game did all the normal install things (the agreeing to stuff that I didn't read, the determining what folder it's going to save stuff in, whether or not I want an icon on my desktop, etc.), and when that was done, started installing. When it was at around 3% done installing, I decided I'd rather not sit and watch the loading bar for seven minutes or so, and minimized the window. After briefly checking a website, I decided to maximize the window again so I could check on it's progress. It was still at 3%, and I noticed that it was Not Responding. WHENEVER something goes into Not Responding mode, I always just open task manager and hit End Task. It eventually exited out of the window. I went to Computer and clicked the game icon, and it opened the menu, this time however the option "Install" was faded out and I couldn't click it. When I hit "Uninstall", I got some message I can't remember about it not being able to uninstall. |

Solve : Can't connect to ANY server in Minecraft Classic? |
|
Answer» I've been having trouble connecting to minecraft classic servers for a while, but now I've decided I need real help. MinecraftI see you are using Windows XP and you are experienced. If you are experienced, why can't you tell use if you are on a LAN in your home. campus, hotel or office. It could make a diff. Does your Local Internet Provider block that site? Have you asked? Or can you get to the site on another PC? Do you think it is a problem with Windows? Did you try another OS? Quote from: Geek-9pm on March 28, 2012, 08:34:29 PM This iw what you are talking about, -Right?I see you are using Windows XP and you are experienced. If you are experienced, why can't you tell use if you are on a LAN in your home. campus, hotel or office. It could make a diff.LAN at home. I don't think my ISP should be an issue, considering they'd have to block a lot of IP addresses (each server is independently owned and operated). I can access the site (minecraft.net), however every server I try to connect to (via the minecraft site, or the World of Minecraft client) say that the server is down. I'll try my mother's laptop, which runs Vista. So ALTHOUGH I'm not surprised my mom's computer can't even properly run the java applet (it's an ancient piece of junk), I am surprised to discover that Minecraft does work, but ONLY in internet explorer. They may be some other issue here.. Geek, Minecraft is not some java drive-by waiting to infect your system. It Was trusted. Letting a certificate expire is - cheap, tacky, tasteless an annoying. Think about a sheriff that lets his drivers license expire. Trusted? Quote from: Geek-9pm on March 28, 2012, 10:29:42 PM It Was trusted.Geek, the game runs fine on IE. What I can't figure out is why it won't run on Firefox or through the World of Minecraft client. The certificate's expired because Notch doesn't work on classic anymore. He's focused on the new minecraft.Did you say that earlier? It is a browser issue maybe. What other browsers have you tried? List of web browsers Sea Monkey has a history similar to Firefox. Might be worth a a try. SeaMonkey 2.8 is current http://www.seamonkey-project.org/ Also: Opera 11 Chrome 9-16 Firefox 4-8 Older versions of FF are still on the web. Just have to look around. http://www.oldversion.com/Mozilla-Firefox.html Or even Netscape 9.0.0.6 http://www.filehippo.com/download_netscape/ It would be INTERESTING to know if it only works in Internet Explorer. I only tried that after my mom's laptop failed to do anything. I'll try the other browsers you listed and post the results. Opera works, installing Google Chrome now. Runs fine on GC as well. I'll test some older versions of FF as well. That is too weird...after testing Google Chrome, Opera (both newest versions), and FF 4.0.1, I can now access Minecraft through Firefox 11. However, I still can't access any servers with the World of Minecraft client. |

Solve : Can't get World of Warcraft to run? |

Answer» Hello, I'm trying to run World of Warcraft and, like its supposed to, when I CLICK on it the launch screen pops up with the news and the "play" button. It then gives me a loading screen that says "reconfiguring gameplay files" which it usually does when the game is updating. However, within 30 seconds of that happening, I get a windows MESSAGE that says "Blizzard launcher is not responding" and it closes out of the PROGRAM. I have tried this MULTIPLE times and I have restarted the computer, as well as running a virus scan. This is the first time this has EVER happened. It usually runs great. |

When it turns back on, I get this message This is why people should feel ripped off by Activision, they even forget to change the error message for the PC... So, that would mean that is not a problem with Microsoft, nit is a problem with Activision, the program publisher.. This may not help, but they have a new version coming... Activision teasing new Call of Duty game Have you looked at their SITE to see if they have a fix? Look around and see if there is any help. I didn't see any. But maybe its there somewhere. http://www.activision.com/...It's just a game, no need to flame or rant at the developer or anything... it's tough making business in such a competitive world... If you're having technical issues with the game itself, KINDLY post on the Activision forums. MW3 runs on other computers just fine, so it's not a problem with the game. OP, please download and install this: http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/blue_screen_view.html and post a screenshot of the latest BSoD dump. |

Solve : Free games over Internet? |

I would also enjoy Lord of the Rings, Star Trek, and Pokemon (all games I used to play, but I only play Magic now). You can try y3.com or y8.com, there are lots of game categories in here. Jayisgames.com is a great site that does recommendations, you just need to filter by free games. Kongregate, Armor Games, and Miniclips also have a large library of free games in a lot of different categories. You don't even need Chrome to play those games. It just links you to sites like Zynga and OMGPOP or to a game's own website. Following that link in any other browser, you can still view the Chrome store and look at the screenshots and info on those games. Then you can just search for the game's website through the search engine of your choice if you don't want to have to install Chrome.http://www.rockstargames.com/classics/ http://www.americasarmy.com/ |

Solve : BASeBlock 2.0.0? |
|
Answer» Quote from: Raptor on February 22, 2012, 10:21:13 AM And a possible infringement of copyright. It would be infringement if I included the resources as part of BASeBlock. since it instead retrieves them- and can only retrieve them- if the game is installed. if it's not found it just shows nothing and nobody is the wiser. I mostly did it to test my additions to how the editor enumerates blocks. Will try to get the new version uploaded soon. Ideally with some less boring levels. Uploaded Version 2.2.0.0 Didn't get to create a nice large set of "main" levels to, but got something of a sampling done in Demonstration.blf" which has a level with some less-common blocks, followed by a Level that demonstrates a "boss fight" of sorts, as well as triggers (killing the boss destroys a group of invincible blocks). The added perk being that typically you wouldn't see the "Boss" (a Snake of blocks) without the editor.... (Which, testing on this laptop, doesn't work to play directly from the editor *adds to buglist*). More buttons. Many of These were in previous versions but I never mentioned them: F3: Toggle "debug" output. shows a few bits of extra info in the bottom left with the FPS display. F4: It's best if you ignore this. Is a test for my partially coded implementation of "in-game" menus. F12: Screenshot (saves to %APPDATA%\BASeBlock\Screenshots as PNG files). Control-Alt-K: Kill yourself. Can be useful if the ball or balls get stuck. Hah, I can play the game now but when there's a lot of things happening on the screen, everything slows down to a crawl. And when I say crawl I mean "slide-show". Using the energy shooter achieves this effect within no time. Quote from: Raptor on February 26, 2012, 01:44:05 PM Hah, I can play the game now but when there's a lot of things happening on the screen, everything slows down to a crawl. And when I say crawl I mean "slide-show". Using the energy shooter achieves this effect within no time. the biggest slowdown is usually the lightorbs,(which are the primary reason for explosions being slow) because they use PathedGradients which are one of the more resource intensive drawing objects. The other is of course particles. More particles/gameobjects/balls/blocks translates into slowness. I've, in my current version, capped the number of particles at 800 and reduced the number of particles and their TTL (Time to live) for several effects, which has helped keep things smoother.I tried the latest version and it runs without slowing down it seems. Do you want my opinion on the overall product? Quote from: Raptor on March 10, 2012, 05:36:31 AM I tried the latest version and it runs without slowing down it seems. That's good. Quote Do you want my opinion on the overall product? Why not. If you think it's bad though you should see my first block breaking game. Oh boy is that embarassing. I have a later version in dev that I've yet to release... haven't even worked on the game in a while, actually, due to some stuff coming up afk. Latest feature was a controllable platform character that can run around, jump, break most blocks(mario style, heh), as well as a few items. I've had a few ideas for ways to optimize speed further (I realized some of the code I have is rather redundant), because the FPS drops are much more noticable when on platforming levels. I figure a good idea is some sort of weird cross with a platform character and the standard PADDLE, somehow working together as a team or something. At least it would be somewhat unique that way. I might unhook the hashed key check-a-majig from it too, and keep the entire thing unlocked, mostly because as it stands now the editor is completely useless since the function I added to allow for testing levels is broken, and it's easier to just say to *censored* with it and make it free. (That, and I've gotten nothing from it anyway*) My biggest project isn't even on my site(in fact most of the stuff I wrote isn't) I'm not really sure what to do with it, but that's another story altogether. *Well, actually, that's not true, I did sell the Product Key stuff to a freelance employer with some modifications for a few hundred dollars a few weeks ago.It reminds me of Arkanoid and that's not a bad thing. I played Shatter a while back (http://www.shattergame.com/) and that's more along the lines of what people expect from games nowadays, even if they're made by an indy developer, graphics wise. (I must say I thought the game was sort of boring and not true to its precedessors, I never finished it because of stupid boss fights) I haven't played your game all that long because I was hindered by all sorts of bugs first (Which you skillfully fixed) so perhaps it has more going for it gamewise but the presentation is rather .. Psychedelic. I don't know if you wrote the musical score yourself but it's the wrong kind of up-beat. These two things bother me a lot. Quote from: Raptor on March 10, 2012, 07:24:08 AM I played Shatter a while back (http://www.shattergame.com/) and that's more along the lines of what people expect from games nowadays, even if they're made by an indy developer, graphics wise. (I must say I thought the game was sort of boring and not true to its precedessors, I never finished it because of stupid boss fights)yeah... no way I'd be able to do that. At least not as it stands now. my "engine" supports rotating, moving, animated backgrounds, though, I just don't use them in any of the "default" builders. Quote I haven't played your game all that long because I was hindered by all sorts of bugs first (Which you skillfully fixed) so perhaps it has more going for it gamewise but the presentation is rather .. Psychedelic. I don't know if you wrote the musical score yourself but it's the wrong kind of up-beat. These two things bother me a lot. That DPI thing was a huge pain! But it works better overall thanks to those changes, which is the ultimate aim. Honestly, the built-in "levels" are absolute crap. To the point where I don't even play them. I need to make a proper, designed set of levels to act as the default, not just have a few random blocks tossed into a level. The music, I made two or three of them. The old default level music, the newer default level music (probably what you are referring to) and the music on the secret credits screen. The rest of the music is pretty much just resequenced and reinstrumented NES and SNES music. (Main intro music is Megaman 2, Game over music is From Zanac). Definitely needs better music, and possibly a few sound effects changed. I know somebody who actually does it for a living who might be willing to help with that, so what I have now could be considered "filler", just so it isn't silent. And I didn't want the music to be taken from other games- even if what I ended up using wasn't that great, (because I'm hardly a composer) I'm not 100% sure I know what you mean by psychedelic... I've sort of felt that a lot of it is sort of bland, that's why I keep adding new blocks/powerups/effects/etc. Quote I'm not 100% sure I know what you mean by psychedelic... I've sort of felt that a lot of it is sort of bland, that's why I keep adding new blocks/powerups/effects/etc. The splash screen at start-up; very colourful. And the picture-within-a-picture when you play on the right-hand side mostly.Updated to version 2.3.0 Code: [Select] *fixed intermittent/rare NullReferenceException crash with FrustratorBlock. Oh multithreading, the only time a NullReferenceException can occur immediately after you've confirmed the value you want to access isn't null. *tweaked Block Category Attributes so that base classes can be hidden and derived classes can be visible (rather than the base classes inheriting the invisibility). (They still inherit it, but it can be reversed with the BBEditorVisible attribute) *reduced default life of fireparticle and reduced number of fireparticles generates by temp balls. *reduced life of lightorbs as well *fixed SpawnerBlock to be more flexible (and allow for "instant" spawning, essentially acting as a "spawn location" marker for GameObjects *tweaked brickblock. Now uses a function to construct a 8x8 pattern bitmap, rather than relying on one existing. Now implements IGameInitializer, as well, to add the brick texture. *made some changes to the "protection". It still sucks but now it uses SecureString instead of normal strings so it won't be easy to simply see the key by inspecting memory. that need to spawn instantly.) *Fixed bug that occurs when generating "random" highscore values when different random scores end up the same. *_Removed Editor Save check, game is now completely "open" in that it doesn't require "registration". However, one will still need to click-through the nag screen :P)_ *Fixed myriad issues dealing with music changes. Now works solidly. *Changed NormalBlock so it looks less stupid. *refactored quite a bit of the code to TEASE apart some of the files that were getting gigantic. (Block.cs was almost 200KB). *splash screen no longer throttles the CPU when it doesn't have the focus. +Added "BuilderShot", which is a power-up that "shoots" a block; first click shoots the block, second expands the shot to grow into the block. +Added code to make some paddle behaviours exclusive. This is the case for terminator and buildershot; if you have one and collect the other, it replaces it. +Added frustratorball. This is spawned when you get a Frustrator Powerup. It acts like a standard ball, but only bounces off blocks that were destroyed. Yes, it's as confusing as it sounds. Still trying to figure out a way to make it somehow worthwhile to keep it in the game field, or at least hard to get rid of (or at least harder than just letting it fall). +New enemy, SpinnerGuy. Similiar to EyeGuy, but shoots bullets. +Added GameCharacter, and platforming elements. Distributed installer has basic set of levels showing some of the capabilities. Control with WASD and space jumps... I think. GameCharacter can hit bricks by hitting them from below. +Added Shell; kills GameCharacter, also, breaks/hits blocks when it impacts in the side. +Added Powerupblock that dispenses the GameCharacter powerups. current powerups are extra life, a mushroom which just gives you points, and a invincibility star which does make the character invincible. +Added Orbs. There are three kinds- Score Orbs, Healing Orbs, and MacGuffin Orbs. the MacGuffin Orbs are counted in the status pane. They do actually do something, and it is useful. You lose half your MacGuffins when you die, but they explode out of the paddle Sonic-Rings style. Orbs are spawned by almost any block when it is destroyed. +Added OrbBlock, which dispenses 50 random Orbs when destroyed. +Changed Paddle so it takes 1 damage from balls. Balls also increase speed as the game is played. +Added "Randomizer" powerup, which randomizes the velocity of all balls in play. +Highscore entry screen (and other entry screens) now support editing (arrow keys and backspace, currently). +Added some cheats that I'm not going to tell you. (bah you can just use ILSpy to find out, I GUESS... +The Paddle now shows when it takes damage. It also takes damage from bullets now (well obviously you cannot shoot yourself). +Fixed EyeGuy (and by extension spinnerguy). They were forcing the entire frame to redraw every frame when they were alive when it was not necessary. Known bugs: -the "machine gun" modes of the Terminator Powerup are broken. Well, they... sorta work, but they are so fast you just end up shooting everything you have in one frame and then exploding. Platforming. Currently uses a Mario sprite, but that will be replaced with something... at some point. The New Normal Blocks: The Orbs somehow add to the gameplay as well, and the ball speeding up over time actually adds a challenge. And even since then I have implemented framerate stabilization code, which stops the problem whereby lower framerates slow down the game. The installer for the 2.3 version appears to be corrupt and it is only about half the size of the previous, so I think something is wrong. I couldn't find the link for 2.0, but I just assumed the name of it would use the same convention and be in the same directory and it was. I was able to upload it again now, and the file seems more complete. It was probably corrupted during the upload. (it took almost 8 hours at the time... huge pain) The previous one would be BASeBlock221.msi (not 200, though that one is there). 2.0.0 is about twice the size of the later ones, since I culled out a lot of large files. OK, 2.3.0 version re-uploaded. File size is the same now. Changed the information on the page to show the older versions that I have uploaded, too. My general impression of the game is good. Here is some constructive criticism. Loading window (about window) causes graphics to not refresh on right and bottom side. Might be something about my graphics driver. Make the images the same size as in the game, so they don't have to be scaled so much. It seems like that much scaling causes them to loose their antialiasization and look pixelated. The combo text that slides up the screen seems very pixelated. The music gets annoying after a while. Have it change to a different song sooner (if it ever does). I agree, but it sets the game apart from all the other breakout clones, so it doesn't bother me. Just think of Mario with all of its references. The music is way too repetitive though and it never seems to change. I use FLStudio too and it takes a surprising amount of work for me to create a good melody. I have a few goodish ones though if you're interested. They would probably only be suitable for the ending scene though. (Is it something you can get a screenshot of if you're willing- that would give me an idea what might be causing it). Quote Make the images the same size as in the game, so they don't have to be scaled so much. It seems like that much scaling causes them to loose their antialiasization and look pixelated. They are being scaled down from 256x128. There is no "size in the game"; I just use 33x16 as the normal size, but blocks can be any size, so I made the images much larger than needed. I found that that slowed things down considerably, of course- having to constantly downscale 256x128 bitmaps to the smaller size, so I added logic that scales all images that meet certain criteria by a scaling factor specified in the INI file. I believe it doesn't do any interpolation of the image, which is likely why they experience some aliasing. (I had a reason for making the sizing linear but I've FORGOTTEN what it was, I'll probably be reminded when I change it though..) Quote The combo text that slides up the screen seems very pixelated.Yeah, I keep forgetting about that. A lot of the blitting stuff was set for maximum speed which in the case of text seems to make it come out a bit aliased. I changed the class used for the scores, combo text, and so forth just now and it looks much better. Quote The music gets annoying after a while. Have it change to a different song sooner (if it ever does).I've only made two songs and they both suck. There are some other songs that it never plays. The Default level music is the same and none of the level-builders change it from the default, with the exception of the one that builds it from a saved file. You can change the music manually though, I actually do that a lot; Control-Alt-C, and PlayMusic can play a lot of different file types. Quote The music is way too repetitive though and it never seems to change. Not on it's own. that "Playmusic" thing above can also play a few of the other tracks, (commando, galway, smwbonus, poing2music (very annoying), wart, and zaark. (for example the code 'playmusic commando' (without quotes) would play that tune. The Sound Manager already supported "queued" sounds, so it should be possible to make it so that a level can have multiple tracks or something to that effect. Quote I use FLStudio too and it takes a surprising amount of work for me to create a good melody. I have a few goodish ones though if you're interested. They would probably only be suitable for the ending scene though. It's a huge pain to make music. Actually, I put the game in indiegogo so with any luck I might be able to get some actual music done properly. In the meantime I was going to use my remixes of NES music. Wow. I thought my internet sucked. What do you have dial-up or something? I tried it; it's good. Quote Wow. I thought my internet sucked. What do you have dial-up or something?I don't have my own internet anymore, Currently I'm using my NEIGHBORS connection (with permission and the WPA key). It's wildly unpredictable. Sometimes I get 1MB/s, sometimes I can't even see the access point. I think it depends on the weather. Quote Anyway, what do you use for the graphics? Is it just the default for C#? Just GDI+ (System.Drawing). I separate some stuff into layers so, for example, it doesn't draw every single block every single frame, instead only drawing blocks when they are hit or destroyed, stuff like that. For external libraries I think it only uses BASS.NET (for sound) and the Windows API code pack (for things like showing the progress in the win7 taskbar for the splash screen). There are a few other references to things like OpenTK but those are only kept around because of a few half-finished ideas to try to replace the BASS.NET Sound implementation with something more open and available. Anyway, I made a class diagram of the game a few versions ago. It's pretty big. Bit of trivia is that the "Spartan" level set isn't actually in the game code itself but rather is actually coded in %appdata%\baseblock\scripts\SpartanLevelBuilder.cs. I keep it there now so that I can be sure that the code that deals with the scripts and integrates them during startup still works. |

Solve : My computer can't run any detailed games? |
|
Answer» Hi , in the past few weeks I could RUN allot of games like call of duty black ops and others, now all of a sudden I installed call of duty 5 and Tom Clancy's Rainbow six Vegas 2 , and when I launch it , nothing happens, But I know I can run those games without any problems, as I checked on canyourunit.com .When I go to task manager I see the process most likely as using 60k memory, But I also have Team fortress 2, which RUNS perfectly fine .I have Microsoft security essentials and my windows is genuine. direct-x is up to date, and also my drivers. |
