Solve : Please Help! - Windows Explorer - Microsoft XP Microborg Edition?

Answer»

Hello, I'm Mark.

I'm not new to computers or computer technology. I can program VB, PHP, ASP, JavaScipt n a couple more but my problem is this;

My brother in law wanted ago on my laptop so i let him. I went to work came back and "BANG!" the laptop would be no use to the scrap yard (I'm on it now). The biggie is my taskbar. something keep exiting the process of explore.exe now i keep opening task manager then clicking "New Task" typeing "explorer" then quickly jumping to the "Processes" TAB to see what keep closing it because then I could narrow down the problem even if its just a little bit but i cant see anything thats stopping the process so now its bothering me because to get on the internet i have to use the task manager! So, Anyway i had a bit of a plan!
Quote

If I was to Copy "explorer.exe". Paste it to the same directory (WINDOWS) then rename it. What ever is closing the process wouldn't recognize what ever I called it right ? Right! but when i do that it all works fine and dandy and then "My Documents" comes up but no task bar.
I'm affriad I'm going to have to result in reformatting the laptop.

Is all this nessacerry ? If not please please please let me know asap

Thanks, Mark.

Solve : BSOD...nv4_disp.dll?

Answer»

Hope this are the right place.

Ok, here's the story.
The computer are intel core 2 duo 2.2 GHZ (if I'm correct)
1Gb ddr2
500Gb Sata
GeForce 8500 GT
http://www.nvidia.com/object/geforce_8500.html

Everytime we try run this "get amped" games the BSOD appear shows :

0x0000008E (0XC0000005, 0XBFB1978F, 0XB3FE3990, 0X00000000)

nv4_disp.dll           - address BFB1978F base at BFA14000, DateStamp 47567aa4

and this BSOD will stuck there until i reset the computer.

All of the computer acting like this when i try launch the game, (only get amped)
and there are more than 30PC's.
So, it can't be the graphic card dying?all of it at the same time?and all of the computer are brand new.
So you GOT 30 computers all giving you this BSoD when trying to run this game?
nv4_disp.dll is a dll related to the Nvidia graphics card driver. I suggest you start by installing the latest driver from Nvidia.i know it's related to the graphic cards...and i already uninstall and installing the latest driver...
but...it still BSODIt seems like a problem with the game. I just can't imagine that 30 computers would all have defective graphics cards.
Have you checked if any patches are available for the game?get amped are online games and it automatically updating itself before launch,so?any idea now?
It's updated...From the way i look at it, the games can update itself before launch, and the BSOD came after that..Did you visit game's forum? Quote from: Broni on January 17, 2008, 08:04:38 PM

Did you visit game's forum?

that's a good idea....i try it, but MEANWHILE, any idea?
You go first...All 30 of those computers are running the exact same specs? You running an internet CAFE or something?

According to Microsoft, 0x0000008E indicates a RAM error.yes, i'm running internet cafe.
but how can all of the computer having same issues at the same time?Well, if they're all identical on the hardware level, then there's obviously something about it the game doesn't like or isn't compatible with.

If patching the game and updating video drivers doesn't work, I really can't think of anything else that would. You should try the game's forums and see if there's anyone else who has had this problem and what they did to fix it. Or you could try contacting the game's technical support (if they PROVIDE it). Other than that, it sounds like you won't get this running on those systems.

What version of the game is this? (it's available in many countries and languages)http://www.getamped.org/ Quote from: quaxo on January 17, 2008, 10:37:47 PM
What version of the game is this? (it's available in many countries and languages)

Which would mean... which version are YOU using?the Singapore / Malaysia version.
Did that make any sense?Anyway i think the game not suitable with that system hardware maybe, like you said.http://forums.playpark.net/forumdisplay.php?s=8991ae4a80546bb93ea2479f1bb42ce4&f=154

Is there a way to GET tv on my pc? Also how to connect pc and tv to watch tv on tv via the pc Quote from: fomoco on January 12, 2008, 04:44:31 PM

Is there a way to get tv on my pc?
Yes.  Get a TV tuner card and install it in your computer.  You'll need an empty PCI slot.  Do you have that?

Quote from: fomoco on January 12, 2008, 04:44:31 PM
Also how ... to watch tv on tv via the pc
You LOST me there.  Your TV signal comes from a cable service, right?  So, you do, and will contiinue to, have an incoming cable connected to your TV, right?

Don't know what a PCI slot is. I have cable TV now, but want to get rid of it, and get my TV over the internet if I can.You have to have cable TV in order to watch TV on your computer. If you're considering, paying for Internet only, they will put a filter on your connection, so TV signal won't get through.
PCI slot looks like below:

If you're looking for free TV over the internet you'll be very disappointed. The selection is still pretty poor. (Basically you get what you pay for)
If you're looking to view you cable TV on the computer you'll need a TV tuner card. You won't need one if you want to view TV over the internet.Hello,

a Few of the Television companies in the US have shows online now.
For instance
cbs.com nbc.com abc.com fox.com tnt.tv scifi.com all have a number of shows you can watch via streaming media.
This is a great for those of us that miss an episode.
Generally you can watch them a day or two after the original air date.

Some of the stations have uploaded entire seasons...... such as ABC uploaded LOST seasons 1 2  and 3  in HD

I still have a need for Cable television for the KIDS shows..... but overall I am pretty happy with streaming shows to my monitor with limited commercial interruptions.
Hello fomoco

If you google 'online TV' you'll find loads of sites with tv channels, but as Deerpark said you may be dissapointed.

As for 'how to connect pc and tv to watch tv on tv via the pc' (which took me 5 minutes to crack btw) yes you can, depending on your graphics card/tv, you can watch televison through your PC onto your TV.

Which graphics card/TV do you have?

Solve : Search engines send me to advertisers, not websites?

Answer»

Recently, whenever I go into a search engine, such as Yahoo or Google, and click on a PARTICULAR web site, I am sent to an advertisment page that may be related to what I am looking for, but not the web site I clicked on.  No matter what I do, from using Spybot to Adaware to Avast, I can't get RID of this problem.  The only way to get to the web site selected is to COPY the URL and then to go to my home page and copy it there to get into it.

I cannot do a system restore as I've MADE too many changes recently.

Any ideas?  Thanks. Sounds like a browser hijack.
Go through the steps here and post the required logs in the Computer Viruses and Spyware section of the FORUM.

Why is SiteHound using this much CPU? How to fix the high CPU usage?

Thank you.

Don't worry guys, switched back to McAfee again. Geez, it's so hard to find something that works these days. These days, you have to download a product that contains 12,000 lines of codes when it only needed about 200 lines to work.IMHO i think site advisor programs are a waste of resources unless of course you tend to CLICK on every flash BUTTON or get RICH quick scheme that comes by...Good point. ...almost as good as XP??
I think all Linux users just screamed out in horror when you typed that sentence.
Depending on what you need the computer for, many flavors of Linux can probably be better than XP. But there is a learning curve of course. If you need a computer to go online on, create a few documents and play music/videos then many Linux distributions can provide you with an OS that takes less system ressources than XP while at the same time being more secure.
Ubuntu is getting a good reputation for being intuitive, easy to get started with and free to boot.
What you need to know is that Linux isn't going to run all your favorite windows program (You can run some but that's a longer story) so you will have to get used to a whole new set of program for all your daily chores. The only exceptions being the software that is also released in a Linux version, like Firefox for example. If you're interested in games, stick with Windows. No other operating system comes close when it comes to games... for now anyway. Mac is getting there, but a lot of games still only come out on Windows.

However, if you have absolutely no interest in games, I'd go with a Linux OS. For many reasons:

1. Most (if not all) of your current hardware should work in a Linux OS.

2. Aside from games, Linux can do most anything else you'd need to do in Windows. Surf the net, create documents (with OpenOffice), chat on messengers (Pidgin works with both MSN and Yahoo, but there is aMSN (a nice MSN clone) and Yahoo's Linux client.

3. Linux distributions can support the NTFS, FAT, and FAT32 files systems that Windows uses, meaning you can still use memory cards, flash drives, floppy disks, and CDS that you already have.

4. Most Linux distributions are FREE. While most of these lack official support from the makers, there are massive communities for each distribution with many knowledgeable people who can help you should you need it. There are PAID versions of some distributions that offer official technical support as well. These vary in price and you can usually pick one up at your local software shop.

5. Most distributions come with (or you can download for free) OpenOffice. With OpenOffice, you can still create Microsoft Office compatible files and view documents from other people. The only problem is with the new Office2007 files. As far as I know, these can't yet be opened, but I expect support will eventually be added for them.

6. Many Windows programs will work with an add-on for Linux called Wine. It simulates a Windows environment for those programs so they can run in Linux. It also works for some games. It won't work for everything however.

7. Less demanding for resources than Windows.

I could go on, but I think you probably get the picture.

A few negatives on Linux:

1. Many distributions don't come with built in support for media files (like MP3, WMA, WMV, and DivX). However, support for all these types can be added.

2. Many games, especially 3D games, meant for Windows won't work well (or at all) in Wine for Linux.

3. Lack of official tech support for most distributions.

4. Some hardware won't work properly in Linux (such as Philips webcams (by design  )).

On picking a distributions, you have to take your needs into consideration and pick one that suits your needs. Fedora, Ubuntu, Debian, Knoppix, and SUSE Linux are some of the more popular ones. If you're just STARTING out with Linux, I'd go with Fedora or Ubuntu. Both are fairly easy to use (compared to others) and both have huge communities. Thanks a mill for all of this great info!:)Closest Distro to Windows I've seen is Lindows, but I'd go with Fedora Core or Ubuntu Desktop as my choices for ease of install.

You can also download and burn the ISO images to CD or DVD's and try them in a Live CD or DVD distro and take them for a test drive without installing. Knoppix, and Ubuntu Desktop 7.x has this feature and I believe you can get Fedore Core 6 in a Live Distro all from here http://www.linux.org/

Linux is far better than Windows for security, but gaming should be left up to Windows OS unless you are a pro at Linux command prompt.

DaveThank you for the info Dave..And thanks to all who replied.I have a PC i have just built and am about to fire it up,i am in the process of creating my Ubuntu CD, should i be aware of any surprises?..I know i simply boot from the disc and take it from there..Will i have driver issues etc etc ?
ThanksI doubt you'll have too many driver issues (if any). Unbuntu and Fedora 8 both have very good support for hardware at the time of install without having to add a bunch of stuff. As far as I know, Linux is not as good as Windows XP, it's even better. But I'm still using Windows XP since it has caused me enough errors to make me change my OS. I would like to learn how to use Linux someday when Windows XP stop working in my PC.

Solve : Script to move files when complete.?

Answer»

Hi,
I am trying to come up with an easier solution to moving files from one system to another when they are completely created.

History:
I WORK for a very small company that tests software on many different OS platforms
Windows,Linux,Unix All flavors dating from OLD-Outdated to Newest
Currently on some of the older systems we use Winzip Command line to backup certain directories to a
Redhat Linux Samba Shared Drive.
This has problems.....Doing this directly causes corruption to the Zip file
Not SURE why yet, but it does.
If I change the destination to a windows server the Zipped files do not get corrupted.
So.....
Currently I do a few things. Create the Zips sending them to a windows server
Move them from the windows server to the Samba Shared Drive.
(This method does not cause corruption and was able to restore file successfully)

the PROBLEM I have is This is a manual process. I would like to automate the process of moving the files
from the Windows Server to the Samba share when there are files present and completed.

To Avoid having to write individual Bat files and schedule them to run after the create of the
files has been completed. I need a way to automate the process of moving files from one system to another.

Here are my thoughts on the process:

This script would need to be run "LIKE" a service in the background checking every 60 minutes or so
(Could be a scheduled task set to run every hour or so)

Check if Files exist in Backup Tree
Options for Backups are daily, weekly, monthly.

The Sub directory name is actually the Host name and Drive ie system1_c system1_d

The Destination directory is a NETWORK mapped Drive and same SubDir name

Maindir
  |
  |
  |-Subdir1
  |   |
  |   |-new_daily_`Subdir1`.zip
  |   |-new_daily_`Subdir1`.log
  |
  |
  |-Subdir2
  |   |
  |   |-new_daily_`Subdir2`.zip
  |   |-new_daily_`Subdir2`.log
  |
  |
  |-Subdir3
  |   |
  |   |-new_daily_`Subdir3`.zip
  |   |-new_daily_`Subdir3`.log
  |
  |
  |-Subdir4
  |   |
  |   |-new_daily_`Subdir4`.zip
  |   |-new_daily_`Subdir4`.log
  |
  |
  |-Subdir5
      |
      |-new_daily_`Subdir5`.zip
      |-new_daily_`Subdir5`.log

Using a BAT file scheduled to run after I "think" the file is completly zipped
is not the answer as it could still be open.
Can you point me to some samples of scripts that may do pieces of what I am trying to accomplish...maybe I can modify them to do what I need.

Your thoughts and responses are appreciated.

Thanks again
RobertMCol

Using the scheduler and batch files presents a problem. Unless you persisted the data, the batch file would have no previous knowledge of the contents of the directory. How would it determine which file to move?

If you could see your way clear to have one directory for the zipped files, you could create a VBScript event monitor.  As each file arrives in the directory, the script could fire off the move operation.

Code: [Select]strComputer = "."
set fso = CreateObject("Scripting.FileSystemObject")
Set objWMIService = GetObject("winmgmts:" _
    & "{impersonationLevel=impersonate}!\\" & _
        strComputer & "\root\cimv2")

Set colMonitoredEvents = objWMIService.ExecNotificationQuery _
    ("SELECT * FROM __InstanceCreationEvent WITHIN 5 WHERE " _
        & "Targetinstance ISA 'CIM_DirectoryContainsFile' and " _
            & "TargetInstance.GroupComponent= " _
                & "'Win32_Directory.Name=""c:\\\\Maindir""'")

Do
    Set objLatestEvent = colMonitoredEvents.NextEvent
    arrFile = Split(objLatestEvent.TargetInstance.PartComponent, "=")
    fname = arrFile(UBound(arrFile))
    fname = Replace(fname, """", "")
    fname = Replace(fname, "\\", "\")
    Wscript.Echo "File Created: ", fname
Loop

The script above monitors a directory and notifies the user a creation event has occurred. With a little modification, you could copy the files to their proper subdirectories and then move the files to the Samba server. You already have a good naming convention so the proper paths could be constructed reasonably easy.

The Scripting Guys can probably explain how this works better than me.

Hello Sidewinder, Thanks for your response......

You nailed it on the head when stating that
Quote

the batch file would have no previous knowledge of the contents of the directory

Which is why I was asking my question here.

In an ideal world,
the script would need to monitor creation events in multiple directories and respond to those events once the file was completely written.
Which is another question.... How would the move script know when the file was complete. (ie stat the file checking the modify date or change date)

I do appreciate your response and pointer to the scripting guys

I will try and modify the Event monitor script to do what I am asking as well as ask the scripting guys for assistance.

Once I do either get it working or am forced to follow a different path I will update this thread so all can benefit.

I appreciate your HELP and have enjoyed reading these forums.
I look forward to coming here as often as permitted.

Solve : MS Word Formatting issues?

Answer»

I work in a print shop and it is thesis printing time.
This means we are flooded with students, with varying levels of computer savvy.
I recommend PDFs when I can but usually, they bring them in as Word docs.

When I open their docs in our version of word (2000) the formatting usually changes drastically which means they then have to go through it page by page and re-adjust everything.
This is very  time consuming and generally annoying as it ties up the computer I use for the bulk of the printing.
The only thing I can think of is asking them to save their doc to 2000. This means sending them away, back to their computer and I am wondering if there are other ways to GET around this...

Any hints?

This sounds strange.  I can understand some minor change in formatting but not "drastic" changes.

Anyway, what version of Word do most of the students use?  I'm guessing it's a later version.  If so, don't you think you should upgrade your Office suite to a later version? And, if only having one version is a problem, then I'd say you should have more than one version of Office available to your customers.  If you don't have enough computers to devote separate machines to different versions of Office, you can install multiple versions on one computer.  To successfully do that, though, refer to Information about running multiple versions of Office with Office 2003Thanks soybean, quick and concise

Drastic was an exaggeration. Sorry, I shouldn't have been so flippant. I was highlighting the fact that a simple procedure was made complicated by the inefficiency of my workplace.
We're talking hundreds of pages per document and I have FOUND that when they see headers being moved about etc. they have to go through each page to feel confident that the layout is the way they want it.

I would assume that most of the students are using a later version, and indeed, it is hardly professional to be unable to cater for a wide range of needs.

I hadn't considered having more than one version on the one machine. I'm not in a decision MAKING position (probably the source of my frustration ) but I will definitely bring it to the attention of someone who is.

Thanks again. If you're only going to have one version of Office, I'm sure you agree having a later version is better.  Change is formatting is mush less likely to occur when the original file was created in an older version than the version being used for printing, as opposed to the opposite situation.

Maybe you've already tried this approach with the decision maker but, in case you have not, I'll go ahead with this suggestion.  You might be able to beef up the argument for Office 2003 (maybe Office 2007) by quantifying the time lost due to students going through their Word files before printing and calculating the potential additional printing revenue by reducing this time.  If you can show figures indicating an upgrade of Office could pay for itself within a certain number of weeks or months, that should help win your case.

If a software PURCHASE does materialize, a decision willl have to be made about what version, 2003 or 2007 (now on the market).  The DIFFERENCE between 2007 and 2003 is much greater than the difference between earlier versions (2003 and earlier).  That might be a reason to hold up on 2007 and go with 2003, assuming most Word users are still using 2003 or earlier.  Time to whip out the calculator!

You're a gem

Solve : MS Word Question: How to insert new pages without affecting existing pagination??

Answer»

Does anyone here know how to insert additional pages into a paginated Word document without AFFECTING the existing PAGINATION?

In other words, I've got a 161-page paginated document, and I want to insert 6 non-paginated pages into it at around page 74.  I want the paginated section to resume at page 75 *after* the non-paginated section.  You see what I mean?

This is probably easy to do, I just don't know how to do it.  Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

I don't know the answer off HAND but I suggest you take a look at http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/word/HP051895451033.aspx

You can insert middle of the section or END of the docuemnt by pushing the button CTRL+Enter simultaneously.
pressing the pause/break button works for me

Solve : Corrupt Outlook 2000 data recovery problem?

Answer»

While running Outlook 2000 away from home, my data became CORRUPT. I attempted to use "Detect and Repair," which I have successfully used before. However, the program required that I insert the original CD, which was not available.

I was given the option to open an existing Personal Folder or to create a new one. Since I didn't have the CD and couldn't open the corrupted existing Personal Folder, I created a new one. When I did so, I discovered that my old folder names were gone and that I no longer had access to my old email.

When I RETURNED home, I inserted the original CD, and ran "Detect and Repair." It didn't help.

I had assumed that Outlook would create a "new" Personal Folder, but it appears that it has overwritten the old one. At least I can't find it. I have searched everywhere for .pst files, with no luck. The new personal folder is called "Personal Folders (1).pst." It seems to me that the old file should have therefore been called "Personal Folders.pst," but it is nowhere to be found.

BTW, I had created a backup of everything before I left home USING Bounceback Professional, but when I attempted to restore from it, it showed that the Outlook data had been deleted. I had never seen that before. Lucky me!

I had another OLD backup (about a month old) on a Western Digital Passport drive which I was able to recover, but I discovered that the default settings did not BACK up the attachments, which contain crucial data.

Is there any way to restore my original data, complete with attachments, or am I completely out of luck? Any help would be sincerely appreciated.

Many thanks.

Greg

Solve : Retrieving info from Outlook or Outlook Express?

Answer»

I had a PROBLEM with Windows booting up, but I am able to SEE all of my files when I PUT my harddrive in an external enclosure.  I am backing up all of my data before reinstalling Windows.

Since I can not open any applications, is it possible to backup my contacts, emails, appointments from Outlook and/or Outlook Express?  Where would I find the appropriate files?

Thank you in advance! For Outlook, SEARCH for *.pst.  You should find several files with that extension.  They will probably be at C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook.  The files you find will be Outlook.pst. archive.pst and maybe backup.pst.   There could be others if you've created a backup under a name other than backup.pst.  RATHER than attempt to describe each of these files, let me just suggest grabbing all of them off that drive if possible.

If you used OE for mail, search for .dbx files and grab all of them.  They contain your OE mail.  If you had an Address book in OE, search your hard drive for  *.wab.

Solve : unwanted software?

How does one get rid of a programme called "win error fixer"? I am trying to help my mother with this problem (made more DIFFICULT by her living OVERSEAS). She says the programme is not in the folder where one can "add or remove programmes" and she cannot find any uninstall button.
It's really annoying to her as this programme keeps popping up telling her she has so many errors and problems with her computer. When this programme is her biggest problem.
Looking forward to any helpful suggestions,
H.
XoftSpySE should remove it for you.
http://labs.paretologic.com/download.aspIf it is loading at startup, you may get an error MESSAGE SAYING the file is in use when you try to remove it. Make sure it is disabled from loading at startup. Quote

It's really annoying to her as this programme keeps popping up telling her she has so many errors and problems with her computer. When this programme is her biggest problem.

This could also be scumware...scumware is a small program that says there's a problem and they want to sell you a program to fix it.
Does this popup ask for money in any way ? ?

If so have her update all her protection programs ; dis-connect from the web and run all her scans in safemode...
To get into safemode she needs to tap the F* key repeatedly at startup.
Once there have her run all the sxcans and then report back with the results...

There might be more steps we will have to take but since you are assisting long distance we'll keep it basic for now.

If she does not have the following programs have her DLoad and install them...they are all free.

Spybot Search and Destroy
AdAware
Stinger.

Tell her to be patient. This all takes a little bit of EFFORT...

If it is not in fact scumware then follow the great advice already given above in the previous posts.http://labs.paretologic.com/spyware.aspx?remove=WinErrorFixerNice catch Fed...suprisingly this one wasn't listed at Spyware Warrior so i wasn't sure.

You lost me there.  If you closed Adobe Reader, how can the instruction book still be in it? Thanks for reply Soybean.
I have today checked Adobe Reader and find that the document has now gone.
To check again, I duplicated the procedure - loaded the disk, clicked the manual to bring it up in Adobe, exited and removed the cd - and after this the document is still listed in the Adobe file menu, even after closing and reopening the program.  It seems to be deleted only when the pc is shut down.  This is what I didn't do first time.  Anyway, all clear now - thanks again. Yep, that's normal.  Like many other applications, Adobe Reader SHOWS a "most-recently used list" when you click on File to display the File menu.  If you want to change the number of files that appear in that list, go to Edit, Preferences, and change it. Set to 0 if you want.

Another TRICK would be to open enough other PDF files after the one you want to drop off the list to make the unwanted file to disappear from the list.  See what I mean?

Also, using CCleaner will clean out such lists. OK - I think I understand a bit better now - thanks for the explanation and tips.

I run CCleaner regularly and this may be why I've not noticed this happening before.

Solve : InfoPath 2003 Snapshot and Other General Questions?

Answer»

I just discovered I had Microsoft Infopath a few days ago and realized it may
work perfect for this project I am putting together. The questions I am
asking I did search for but didn't find anything.  Besides, this is something
I need done quickly and if any actually knows the answers while I KEEP
searching, that would be great.

Thanks so much ahead of time! If I get the right answers like I hope, I'll
be sure to come back when I get started on the project ;-)

MY SCENARIO:
I'm trying to design a form that connects to a DATABASE of information.
This information through use of queries and such will need to be gathered
through a form (Infopath I assume) and queried out some more.  I'll then need
to be able to manually edit any of the information and then when I'm all
done, save a  "snapshot" of what I just did and print it.  NOTE: When I say
edit, I do NOT mean edit the main information that was derived from MS
Access, I simply mean that particular form.

You see, we're trying to basically create a "Machine layout plan" that will
have a customer information, the item they want, the machine number and then
it will have a list of the different "parts" that we must create.  These
parts have other parts in them (a belt, certain type of bolts, etc).  This is
all fine and good and normally for this we would not need to make changes,
however we do have special orders come in all the time that customers want to
tweak the stuff from what our "standard" is.

SO, basically we need to be able to grab the information from a database by
using a form to determine what from the database we need, then take a
"snapshot" of that information, and then allow additions, deletions, and
updates to the current lists of information and finally, have the capability
of saving that item in a folder (preferably, though if there are better
ideas, that WORKS too), and then printing it off and then having the
oppurtunity to go back in, print other copies off or make more changes and
save again.

BASIC QUESTIONS:
I am pretty sure Infopath is the cheapest and most likely candidate for the
job so long as the use of Access is involved, my problem are these.

1.) Will infopath be able to take a snapshot of the database information
(the queries and stuff I used to grab this unique set of information) and
save a different copy IN infopath, allow changes to be made locally to that
file? (Or maybe just some other way, I dont' know.. but our orders must each
be unique due to the high volume of special changes we get).

2.) Can infopath have a table in it full of information (such as parts) that
will be able to easily add new parts, delete old parts or change current
parts information?

3.) On top of question 2, I was thinking on creating two tables... one
called "systems", another called "systemItems" and one more called
"systemBOM"  the one called "systems" would be have the titles of the
different systems we have to build for that particular machine, then drop
down another list that would be the different systemItems (like a serial
number) that make up the different systems, allowing me to choose ONE
systemItem.  Finally, we would have "systemBOM" which would be our materials
list.  The materials list would be connected to the systemItem and after we
had chosen the systemItem number for each system, the materials list would be
displayed underneath each system. So my question is, can this be made
possible by use of infopath and access?  Also, (more of an Access question),
would it be possible to connect more than one systemItem to a system
material? (I'm assuming it would be called a many - many relationship, but we
still need to recognize that the systemItem takes precedence).

4.) Based on what you heard, do you even agree that InfoPath & Access are
the right to programs to use for this or do you have something else in mind
that I haven't thought of?

I deeply appreciate any help I get!!!
--Mike
*bump*I don't think you need any more than Access for this.  But you do need someone who really understands database design to do this for you.  And if you want to deploy this solution in a multiuser environment, a SQL database backend would be a very good idea.  (You can still use Access as a frontend - it's handy for rapid development.)

By the way; no need to bump posts after just an hour.  Someone will get there eventually.  But the main problem-solving contributors to this forum are spread across many different time zones.THanks for the suggestions, however if you noticed I BUMPED it precisely 25 hours later.

I'll look into it some more.Whoops!  Sorry!

Having been made redundant last week, feel free to give me a shout if you need some DB design and coding support!!!  I was told quite a bit over here: http://www.infopathdev.com/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=4342 but I've been thinking that when they say "Live Meeting" they expect $$ and a chance to come over.  $$ isn't a bad idea, so long as it is not much, but to come over?  I Have no idea who these people are and can not trust our assetts and even the slighest chance at getting a hack through to our systems.  I need someone who can walk me through this via a voice conference or through a chat room or even the phone if wished.  I know it's asking a lot to do this for a company but in the process I will be learning things, which is the main reason why I want to do this... not only for future repairs but future jobs and such.  I'm only 17 running an entire network and I don't believe my school or any colleges around teach "InfoPath" ;-)

Anyways, after reading that other message you're willing to put in your 2 CENTS worth, I would deeply appreciate it.

Thank you,
--MikeInfoPath is a good-looking bit of kit, and probably well worth learning.  I have not experimented with using it in a distributed fashion though.  I still think that an MS Access front end with a SQL back end is likely to be your best solution.

Unfortunately, when I said "feel free to give me a shout if you need some DB design and coding support" I didn't mean that I could enter into a large project for free, alas.  I still gotta eat.

Solve : Convert publisher file to word??

Answer»

Hello! I am trying to find a way to convert a publisher file to a word file, or any other file, like a pdf.

The reason is because I created a flyer for someone in publisher and they do not have that program. I cannot find an easy way to fix this problem, except re-do the whole thing in word, which is a pain.

Also, I'm noticing that there are some things you can't do in word that you can in pub, like create a text box with columns?  :-?

If it helps, its a newer IBM (work pc sorry no more info) that runs xp professional, i think.

Someone, please, anyone, help SAVE me the trouble of re-doing it! It will not LOOK nearly as nice in word! Thanks!!!!  Sure can, just open Publisher and go to file->Save As and look for where it says "Save as type:", and just change the extension to what you prefer, for MS Word just change to .doc. Hope that helps.

8-)fffreakSeems simple enough.....

Of course nothing is that simple for me.  :-/ When I TRY that, I get quite a few different choices.

word 2.x for windows   *.doc
word 97-2003 & 6.0 rtf   *.doc
word 6.0/95   *.doc

etc....

does it matter which i use, adnd does the lil asterik mean anything?

Thanks! I just love this site, always so HELPFUL!!!  OK, it might be weird to reply to my own post, but I just thought of another question.

How would I change it to a pdf? That doesn't seem to be listed, and it seems that pdf files are preferred by many people.

Thanks again, you guys rock!As to your above question try this one, "word 97-2003 & 6.0 rtf   *.doc". For Word to PDF converting look > here <, lots of places there to look. In fact 283,000,000 resources. Hope that helps.

8-)fffreakThank you for the pdf help, i will save a site for that, it will be very helpful.

However, like I said, nothin is that easy for me with computers anyways.

When i try to save the pub file as a .doc, it tells me...

"the file you selected only supports text. to save the text of this publication, click ok. to save the entire publication, click cancel, and then choose the publisher file type"

any suggestions?  :-?I'd suggest saving the text as a .doc, then reinserting the images in Word. It's a little more work, but it gets the job done.

If, for some reason, the Word version has more problems than missing pictures (the formatting is all screwy) and reinserting the pictures doesn't fix that, you still have the .pub to go back to. So, no harm if it doesn't work. Quote

You'll see that message no matter what Publisher file you try to save in .doc format.  Go ahead and save it and then open it in Word and see whether you've lost anything.  If you have, you'll have to manually add back what was lost, as Dilbert indicated.
Or you can just output it as a PDF.  Have a look in the software FAQ (link below) for PrimoPDF.  That will do exactly what you want.

Note that you will not be able to convert from PDF back to .pub

Solve : Recording sound with Audacity?

Answer»

OK, what am I doing wrong?
I'm trying to record a tape to my HDD.
I've got the tape player's headphone output connected with a 3.5mm to 3.5mm lead to my computer's microphone input.
I get nothing with Audacity other than a faint hiss, EVEN with full volume on the tape player and full gain on the mic, boost enabled.
Is there something I'm missing?
I've checked the connections and I've checked that it's set to record on the right input.
It's some sort of Morphy Richards mini hi-fi system, if that helps, and I'm using a creative Audigy 2 ZS Notebook sound card.  I've ALSO tried it with REALTEK integrated HD sound.
Windows XP Pro SP2 with latest updates, latest version of Audacity (1.2.6?).
Thanks in advance.
Calum.I've recorded tapes to my hard drive with my desktop computer.  With the sound card I have installed, I connected the line from the tape player (headphone output) to the Line In connector on my sound card, not the Mic connector. Do you have a Line In connector, in ADDITION to the Mic connector?Nice catch, soybean !Oh, I knew I was missing something.
Unfortunately I don't have one, it's a notebook soundcard and thus very small.
I have a headphone/speaker output, a mic input and a strange looking beastie that appears to be for surround sound speakers (with an adapter).
So I need a line in input then?
Or a preamp, would that work?
Been doing some more digging on this since I posted. Before you spend money, check this:

Set the microphone volume (right) to the max and you'll get fairly loud sound (if it isn't already at 1)Thanks, but that's what i was trying to say.

full gain on the mic, boost enabled.
I set the mic volume to full in Audacity and in Control Panel and enabled the boost.
Ah well, it's not worth buying anything, it's only one tape I wanted.
Thanks for the hep anyway. No Problem...we Love providing "hep"...

 Oh dear.
*ahem* thanks for the help.
HELP, people.
Nearly as bad as bot times . . . Quote
Thanks, but that's what i was trying to say.

Sorry about that. Oh well, using Photoshop on that pic was fun. Be sure that the mic is enabled.  Bring up the Windows mixer (Start-->Run-->sndvol32).  Options-->Properties-->Adjust volume for recording; Okay.  Ensure the Microphone input is selected.Already enabled and selected.
Thanks anyway.

Solve : RAID setup?

Answer»

I have lots of questions concerning RAID that I hope you can help me with.

I considered getting a RAID setup, because at the MOMENT my hard drive is starting to get full up and I need more space (80GB). I was told by a freind who had a RAID setup that it can improve your speed and performance, because for example, instead of loading one driver it cna load up two at the sime time hence the faster performance, is this true?

How would I go about setting up RAID, how MUCH does it cost etc. At the moment I have an ASUS A8N-sli motherboard, im not sure where it supports RAID or not.

And is there a site that can better explain RAID? Ive tried wikipedia but its always too technical with these kind of things.

Thats all

Any help would be appreciated, thanksIf all you need is more capacity, you would be better off to simply add a additional HD. For home users, the choice is normally between RAID 0 and RAID 1. With RAID 0 you get double speed reads and writes. However, if one disk fails, you loose EVERYTHING stored on the computer. With RAID 1, you have a mirrored array whereby all data is stored (mirrored) on the second drive. It gives double speed reads, normal speed writes. If one drive fails, everything is still available on the second drive and the machine is still BOOTABLE. Also note that with RAID, all drives must be identical, or minimumly, the same capacity. Using drives of different capacity will result in the RAID using the smaller drives capacity as the base capacity. Excess capacity on the larger drive cannot be used, not EVEN to create an EXTRA partition. If need pure speed, RAID 0; if you need data security, RAID 1; if you simply need capacity, add a HD.

Solve : awdflash utility?

Answer»

does anyone know how to use the COMMAND line to program 2 BIOS chip?
i have one system bios and one backup bios on my motherboard.
using awdflash.exe  award bios.
using awdflash/? i can't find any command line to FLASH upper and lower bios.
:-?Let's start with the motherboard model and why you are wanting to flash the BIOS. It is very easy to ruin a motherboard if improperly done and for no good reason.  Wouldn't it be nice if the posters ever gave us the complete story instead of bits and pieces ............

dl65  Ah, but that takes all the fun out of it!I was just looking back at the posters history ...and it APPEARS this may be a school related question ..........

dl65  yes..is my school project..
somebody BUILD and motherboard that have two bios socket.
one for system bios and the other one is backup purpose.
the bios is award bios.
i have awdflash.exe utility running under DOS.
i want to flash both BIOS at one time.
that means upper is for my system bios, lower case is for my backup bios.
i understand that phoenix bios can do it, with another flash utility.
BUT, i have no idea on awd bios.
The purpose of a backup BIOS is to SAVE your *censored* on a bad flash.
Wouldn't it be a little more prudent to flash each one separately ?

Solve : Problem opening files with microsoft word?

Answer»

Hello all. I am new here. I hope I posted this topic at the correct place.

I am having problem opening a few files sent through email by my lecturer. Anyway here is the error stated:

Quote

Word experienced an error trying to open the file. Try these SUGGESTIONS:
*Check the files permissions for the document or drive
*Make sure there is sufficient free memory and disk space
*Open the file with Text Recovery converter

Apart from that, under the help this is roughly the message I get:
Quote
This error message can appear for several reasons.

The document may be corrupt or damaged.
File permissions may be set so you cannot access the file. (read denied)
It is possible that you have run out of system resources.
There may be a read LOCK on the file you are trying to open.

There is sufficient memory and disk space with my pc so that shouldn't be a problem.
I opened the file with Text Recover, I could recover the text but I could not recover the GRAPHS in the lecture notes.

The strange thing is that some of my classmates who received the emails could open the file but quite a lot people couldn't as well.  :-? So I reckon the problem is not with the files sent but probably with the SETTINGS on my pc or something else.

I am using Microsoft Office Word 2003 and I think my lecturer's pc is also using Word 2003. Nonetheless I have installed Compability Pack but still couldn't open the files.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Since other people, "quite a lot people", are having the same problem, why not join with them in telling the instructor about the problem?  Seems like something's not right at his/her end.Agreed ...how long has he been an instructor ? ?Actually I was under the same lecturer last year and all the files sent that time was working well. Anyway my firends and I have spoken to him recently, and he decided to SEND the files in pdf format instead. And it works, so the mystery remains but the problem is solved.

Thanks anyway.

Solve : Audio Capturing Software?

Is there a freeware (or any at all) software that can capture the output of the SOUNDCARD? I searched and tried ARWizard but it bleeds over the sounds from the microphone. Thanks  Audacity?

Look at all of the Essential SOftware listed in the FAQ section. If you have a SoundBlaster card, take a look at the utilities that came with it. Windows sound recorder should also work.Sound recorder! I can't believe I didn't think of that   I switched INPUT devices on the window's recorder and it worked perfectly. Thanks for the REPLIES!Ah! The good ol' KISS PRINCIPLE.   Didn't realize that the Sound recorder only records 60 seconds than quits. Is there a way to increase the duration?I don't know the answer to your question about Windows Sound Recorder, although I'd guess the length of time can not be increased.  So, I SUGGEST you try Audacity.  It's freeware and I see they even have a support forum at http://audacityteam.org/forum/Thanks, I'll try Audacity!

Solve : IE7 Problems?

Answer»

I have a near new Toshiba Qosmio with Media Centre installed. It had IE6 installed on it when I got it new, and I upgraded it to IE7. Ever since then I have had problems with it freezing up on pages loading, and I have to use Task Manager to shut it down. This is intermittent, but happens off and on every day, and is driving me nuts........! I uninstalled it and re-installed it, but the same thing is still happening. I also wonder what the system is where you BUY a new computer with Windows installed and don't have the Cd to correct any issues, which I have been prompted for at one stage. Do I have to buy one? :-?If it is nearly new, then I would contact Toshiba directly and see about a restore disk or whatever they offer.I have actually found my recovery disc in my archives. It tells me to place the disc in the drive, power up the computer while holding down the'C' key when the screen reads Toshiba, and it will format the hard drive. Will this WIPE all my installed programs, files, etc...... i.e. have a clean sweep? I am HAPPY for that to happen, but don't want to lose anything. Thanks...........Yes a format WILL erase all your data...try the suggestion above and contact the manuf.OK, will do. But just out of interest, should I use it in the future, will this disc I have uninstall Windows as well? Thanks.........With caution. A rescue CD from the manufacturer is designed with one thing in mind...to take that machine back to Day One out of the box as in brand new.

After doing this any data you had prior to this is GONE for good. And any programs and UPDATES you have installed that did NOT come with the machine are gone as well and would need to be re-installed...

Not the best choice but when there's no other...I tried IE7 for about a week and with some help from Microsoft, returned to IE6. My email only being capable of plain text was one issue. The other was I lost a couple programs I had before installing IE7. My brother-in-law told me it's still in the beta phase and not mess with it until it has all the bugs worked out.

Cheers,
JoyceThanks Joyce. I have actually taken the huge step of cleaning out the hard drive and starting afresh, mainly because I wanted to see how hard it was for a learner to do, and it was fine! I didn't have much data to save, and still have my old computer which has 2 hard drives on it. The only thing I lost was my address book, and it's available upstairs. So, as you say, I will keep IE6 and wait for a while. In the meantime play around with FireFox...you may never look back.

patio.  8-)Thanks Patio. If I download Firefox, do I need to uninstall IE? Or do I just choose FF as my default browser?Just set FireFox as default ...leave IE alone. It is needed for Windows updates anyways.

FireFox will import your IE favorites as well.

Solve : Spam protection?

Answer»

Hello there!

I have Outlook 2007 and am looking for a program which will help protect me from SPAM.  Most of them out there try to be clever by "reading" the e-mail and giving it a spam score percentage.  This is not what I am after.

What i am after is a system that will allow me to feed it a whitelist of addresses (i.e. good e-mails in my inbox as well as e-mail addresses i've sent e-mail to) which will ALWAYS land in my inbox and then QUARANTINE any other e-mail from an address which isn't in my whitelist.

Further to this, if an e-mail lands in the quarantine area, i'd like to be able to click on it to approve it as a legitimate e-mail message and for it's email address to be added to the whitelist.

Does such a system exist?I don't know but do you know whether your ISP offers spam blocking features?  My ISP is Earthlink. I use both Outlook Express and Outlook 2003 for email.  But, I REALLY control spam by logging onto my email address via Earthlink's WebMail access and creating my whitelist/address book there.  It's been a very effective WAY of controlling spam.  Every day, Earthlink also send me a list of stuff that is suspect mail. If I think there's something there that I want, I just logon to WebMail and add that sender to my online address book or, if it's likely to be a one-time occurrence, must move it to my Inbox but not add the sender to my address book. Have you checked out an email client named Thunderbird?

I use it, and like it.   However I have never had need to really test and experiment with its various spam controls.
It may do just that...  "read" the email as you said.     The JUNK filter is trained by you though.

Your best bet might be to read up on it.

By the way -  it is free.

As a matter of fact, you might be able to set up filters to do everything you want.

Further to this, if an e-mail lands in the quarantine area, i'd like to be able to click on it to approve it as a legitimate e-mail message and for it's email address to be added to the whitelist.

Does such a system exist?

Hi there,

I have checked out Thunderbird and did in fact use it for a year or so, however I had a program developed for my business which utilises the office system and it's all TIED in with outlook and access therefore I cannot use Thunderbird for e-mail.

I may look into it a bit further.

Solve : zone alarm true vecter?

Answer»

i had zone alarm installed in my computer, after i did an uninstall its still showing up in my service manager as disabled. when i try to reinstall zone alarm it tells me to shut down my true vector service, so i'm assuming that this is referring to the service still in my services list. when i right click on the service, i cant ENABLE or anything, so im at a loss that my computer still tells me to shut down this service when it obviously isnt running.
is this a problem with registry traces left behind after my uninstall or something ELSE. i want to get every instance of zone alarm out of my system so i can do a clean install. any suggestions?
  THANKS AHEAD of time.
DLoad and run CCleaner and SEE if it cleans out the remnants...

Solve : booting from a floppy?

Answer»

I have an old PC running Windows ME that I want to give away.  I have downloaded onto a floppy a program to erase that hard drive before I get rid of it.  Please tell me how to boot that computer using the floppy disk so that I can execute the program.Brenda.

Which program is this ? ?
A WinME bootdisk available for free on the web at bootdisk.com will create a bootable floppy that has all the TOOLS you need.
DLoad the file and double-click it to create the floppy.
Then start the machine with the floppy in and it will end up with a black screen with an A:
Type in  "format C: /U and hit Enter.
This will erase the drive.

For added peace of mind you could also run FDisk on that first and then format. If you need instructions let us know...we'll be here.

patio.   8-)The software that I have downloaded onto the floppy is the free version of "KILLDISK".

I did try to RESTART the machine with the new floppy in the drive.  I got a black screen with THREE options, one of which I have forgotten at the moment.  Those that I remember were Retry or Cancel.

I do have a WinME boot floppy that I made when I first got the computer.  It was just my understanding that the "killdisk" software would do a more thorough job of erasing the hard drive.

Thanks for any guidance you might offer. It's true that killdisk will be more thorough...but why not just throw a new HDD in there ? ?
I never give a machine away with a HDD i have used...i have every HDD i've EVER owned.Boot with the bootdisk. Then put in the floppy with Killdisk and run it.Unless you are giving your computer to a technical genius, a normal format should be fine.I want to say thanks to all of you for offering your suggestions about helping me boot from a floppy.  I have been on a journey I don't soon want to repeat but I have certainly learned lots in the process. You're more than Welcome...stop by anytime !

Solve : Mypictures/slide show/how change transition rate??

Answer»

When you view "My Pictures" as a slide show, the rate of slide transition seems to be about 5 seconds.  Can this rate of transition be changed? and how?  I'm not interested in doing this through Power Point. You could PAUSE it and manually transition. However, other than some obscure registry tweak that I don't know about, I don't think there is a way to change the slideshow transition speed. TMD (Typical Microsoft Deal)Thanks for your help.  Since I am not connected with anyone who knows much about computers, this forum is greatly appreciated.Hold on, I know a way . . . I'll find it for you but it may take me a while.
There's a registry hack somewhere and another way.
I'll find it.rosepen, do you have any photo editing SOFTWARE, perhaps something that came with a digital CAMERA?  I have Fujifilm camera that came with FinePix Viewer software.  I can use it for slide shows and it does give the option of changing the speed. You just reminded me of this thread.
You can change the speed of the slideshow transition using TweakUI.
Download and install it, then go to Explorer --> Slide Show, where there is an option to change the speed.
it can also be done via the registry but I can't remember how.
Hope this helps.
PS It is 5000ms, or 5 seconds, by default.  You were RIGHT.

Solve : Replacing HD in a ThinkPad 760E?

Answer»

When I got my Tecra I gave my ThinkPad 760E to my little brother. Now I have a 10GB HD that was in the Tecra, but I upgraded it (the one that's in the thinkpad is only 2.1GB). It's just sitting in my bedroom. I was wondering how the heck you dissasemble the caddy in that thing... It doesn't look FUN  :-/

If anyone could find me instructions it would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

-John

EDIT: I just wanted to clarify a couple of things.
A. I was an idiot and managed to post it in the wrong section
and B. I want to know how to dissasemble the caddy in the TP (the post looks a little confusing now that I read it)It has been a while since I've taken one of those apart.  Can you provide a photo of the caddy to jog my memory?Well actually since yesterday I've made quite a bit of progress. Got the NEW DRIVE in and everything. Of course, the BIOS only recognized the first 8GB (it's a 12GB drive, i think it's an IBM Travelstar 12GN... model DARA-212000) so i partitioned it using FDISK. I restarted as per FDISK's request, and now EVERYTIME i try to start up off of the floppy disk it just freezes COMPLETELY... it works fine with the hard drive removed or the old hard drive in. Something I should note is when I turn it off with the power switch after it's frozen it goes "BEEP" and then shuts off... dumb computer!

Thanks!

-JohnHave you looked for a BIOS upgrade for this machine?

Does it still boot with the original hard drive?  (You may have a coincidental but unrelated problem.)

Solve : Pinnacle Studio 9 crashes at rendering DVD?

Answer»

I have plenty of RAM and processing speed. This happens some TIMES, and not at other times.  I've tried RESTARTING computer. I've tried TAKING out the particular movie clip that seems to be where the crash is happening.  I've very frustrated... you go to all this work on editing a video and then you can't finish it!

Ideas?Just how much RAM and proccessor speed is plenty ? ?1.00 GB

2.17 GHzHow much free space is on that HDD ? ?
I would run the HDD diagnostics from the HDD manuf. site.

It could ALSO be power related as video editing tasks are intensive.
What make and size is the PSU ? ?

Solve : Trusted Zone??

Answer»

Now to display my ignorance! When updating some programs, Spyware Guard for example, ZONE Alarm firewall tells me it wants to access the "Trusted Zone", then tells me it wants to access the "Internet Zone". What is the trusted zone please. (Yes, I am ready to sit red faced in the corner!)The trusted zone is whatever you set as the trusted zone.
It may be set by you, it may be automatically set.
Not having ZA any more, I'm not sure of how to check what it is.
I think it's something LIKE this - open the ZA control PANEL, and look through the tabs and settings for the trusted zone.
It will be named as something, perhaps your network adapter.
I know on my old PC the wireless was set as the trusted zone by ZA and the Ethernet connection was the internet zone.
Sorry I couldn't be of more help, but this may at least point you in the right direction.
Edit: this article ALSO explains a little about it, and the ZA help files may also provide some info. Thanks Calum. At least I now know a bit more about it. The link was helpful aswell.Glad to have been of assistance.

Solve : Print job sent to different user??

Answer»

Hope someone can give me some ideas on where to look for a fix for this issue.  Sometimes when I print to my hp deskjet 932c the print icon will open in the systray but the print will not start.  If I open the print JOB dialog box it says that the print job is pending but it will not print.  If I switch users the hp print preview WINDOW will be open with my print job displayed and I can then go ahead and print the document?  This does not happen every TIME I try to print.  It seems to happen when my girlfriend has been on her account and used the printer from her account.  This also happens to her when she tries to print from her account.  The print can only be completed when she SWITCHES over to my account.  One other interesting tidbit.  If I RESTART the computer while it has the print job pending the hp preveiw window opens when I log onto my account and I can print the job?

Thanks
