Guys, iv reached the end of my knowledge to try and fix my problem, for some reason my laptop, although completely up to date with all the latest fixs from microsoft, with IE 7 etc blah blah blah, will not allow me to see the MAJORITY of pictures/thumbnails of cars on the autotrader.com website etc, out of maybe 10 hits, only one thumbnail will display, and when i try and enlarge the picture it comes back as a blank image, not even a red cross!? I thought it might be some sort of pop up blocker stopping it from displaying but iv turned everything off, and still nothing, so i thought it might be a problem with IE7 so i downloaded FIREFOX, still the same problem, thought it might be a problem with thier site, so i tested it on my mates computer and all the pictures are displaying fine!  Also i think its effecting my "myspace" profile as there is an "upload" feature which is missing from a page which is stopping me from uploading videos, any ideas or people that have had the same problem?

Have you noticed any other problems recently?Yeah i have actually, when im trying to upload a video ONTO myspace profile, there is an "upload video" option that should appear but it doesnt, on the properties its like a html document so im thinking that my laptop is having problems displaying certain html items?  as for spyware protection, cant quite remember what i have, i dont think i have that much, i have windows defender and what ever protection is part of McAfee securty centre?Could be some sort of html problem.

Try using Spybot and Ad-Aware SE as well.
Download, install, update and run them, and fix any problems found.

You need to update it and then click check for problems.thanks ill give that one a go aswell, and yes i did update it and then did the search so its the most up to date it can be. Ill let you know how the other one goes.OK, let us know how it goes.

If so, could you list them?right, i have run a scan with ad aware and it found some various low risk threats i.e. cookie related stuff and i have quarantined/deleted everything it has found, just as i did with spybot (which it also found various hits) but i cannot recall any of the names, but it is still not showing the missing pictures from the 2 sites i have been talking about!? Maybe one of these files has left some damage that these applications havent fixed?The files may have left some problems but Spybot and Adaware should clean them up.
I went on the Autotrader site and it works fine for me, can't say anything about Myspace because I don't use it.
Try starting Firefox in safe mode - "Start --> programs --> Mozilla Firefox --> Mozilla Firefox - Safe Mode" - and see if you can see it properly now.
Incidentally, are you experiencing problems viewing other html files?
Also, what happens if you right click on the space where the pictures should be - does the right context menu come up, i.e. a picture one?
And what shows if you select properties?Iv started Firefox in safe mode, hasnt made any difference, i havent had any other problems viewing other files as far as im aware but theres only a small amount of sites i visit on a regular occasion to actually notice the problem, when i click on the area where the "upload" feature should be on myspace profile, there is nothing, no picture 1 or anything and when i click on properties, all i get is Miscellanious Properties : Text Language: English.

As for the Autotrader website, when i get my hitlist back of the cars i have selected to search on, the majority of  initial thumbnails do not appear at all, BAR the occasional one,  not sure if this is to do with the format they may be saved in, but for the ones that do display, i can right click and i get the options to View Image, Copy Image, Save Link etc etc, but they appear very small, but for the rest of them which haven't displayed, if i go into the actual advert, lets say which apparently have 6 pictures, perhaps one maybe two tiny thumbnail pictures by the advert, if i left click on any of them to try and enlarge them, it will just reopen the advert in another tab , NO PICTURE?! Very strange, hope you followed all that ok?!Terry, do you have AOL by any chance?  It sometimes has a tendency to make certain pictures not work in browsers.  Either way, it might not hurt to try deleting your temporary internet files and then restarting your browser.  Just a suggestion.Hey, iv found something out or figured something, if i delete all of my temp internet files and then run IE7 "without add-ons" and then go into the Autotrader website, it seems to display everything fine for the first vehicle that i view, all normal size thumbnails and i can enlarge the pictures and everything yay  ; )  ..... but then after i leave that advert and go to the next one it goes back to its normal crappy way!? My sister recently got a new laptop (Gateway MX8170 with Windows XP - SP2) and I've got it running pretty well for her, but I keep having one little problem.  Occasionally, when dialing up with AOL 9.0, the computer will freeze as the modem is initializing.  It doesn't happen every time, but it happens often enough to be somewhat of a bother.  My sister says it sometimes freezes at random times, but it mostly happens when trying sign on to AOL.  So, I'm guessing it probably has something to do with this.  Does anybody KNOW what the problem might be, and how I might fix it?  Thanks.

This may be a hardware issue that you will never be ABLE to resolve on your own.And if the unit is still under warranty i wouldn't do too much self-diagnosis...I've found similar problems online, but nothing seems to be too relevant.  I'm going to look around a bit more and try a couple of THINGS.  If I don't come up with anything, I'll try contacting Gateway, although I've heard that their CUSTOMER service is awful.It certainly is if you don't contact them.

Very slow receiving e-mails in outlook.  It is downloading byte by byte.  Doe anyone have any clues please?Is the whole computer slow, or just your internet connection, or just Outlook?

So has this always happened or is it a recent problem?It's been on and off for the last couple of MONTHS.  Did a tracert and found 18 hops with a couple of time outs?  But it's only a problem on incoming mail.

You might also try using Outlook Express as a test to see whether your email is slow with it, too.

I don't THINK you can "install" it on your flash drive, but I believe you can download on ONE computer, copy the downloaded FILE to your flash drive, and then install it on the other computer from your flash drive.  Go here: Downloads for Windows Media Player. What say thee to that?

Are there any programs that convert audio files?

My father got an MP3 player as a gift but it only supports MPEG1/2/2.5 and WMA audio files but all the files in itunes and his music file are all in MPEG4 format. Is there a program that converts them or a way to do it from itunes?

I just looked at my itunes as well and all the songs I CHECKED are MPEG 1... Any idea why they would be MPEG4 on his itunes? (It's not the same music)


The songs are uploaded (right word?) to the MP3 player but they don't play or show up in it. They just show up in the folder in the computer.

I hope I didn't confuse everyone..Are the MP4s music videos? MP4s tend to be for portable video players. But you can watch them with Quicktime in Windows. To make it easy post the extensions of the songs files.I'll have to check tomorrow, I can't access my dad's computer now.

Hi, everyone.  I'm new to the forums here, and I'm hoping you can help answer a question.

I've developed an interest in wine recently, and I'm looking for a program to help categorize information not about specific wines but about varietals, regions, etc.  I want to create many different pages/cards, one for each year, each varietal, each country, etc. (which I can do with Word or Notepad) but I'd also like them to be part of one large file.  I'm thinking of a program that shows a list of all the pages, say, running down one side of the screen so if I want to move between different pages I can just click on the shortcut to the page without having to open and close individual files.  This way the entire database is one file, and I have quick access to each individual page.

I'm not concerned one way or the other about compatibility with exporting to other programs, so it doesn't matter if it's in a proprietary format or not.  Freeware would be ideal, but I don't mind PAYING less than $50.00 for the perfect program.  I'm running Windows XP.

Is there software that can do this?

ChrisYou could CHECK out Treepad Lite which is free. Treepad Lite does not support images which may be a deal breaker. It uses a interface that looks suspiciously like Windows Explorer.

Excel and Access can both support what you want to do, but they can be quite complex and are CERTAINLY not free (not even cheap).

I swear I feel more and more computer illiterate EVERY DAY.  My wifes computer has some sort of pop up BLOCKER.  It doesn't say a pop-up was blocked in the top left, and to the best of my knowledge and searching there doesn't seem to be any pop-up blocking software.  Its really annoying beacuse if you go to a site where a pic can be enloarged with pop-up, it won't let you unless you GET LUCKY.  Sometimes it takes 10-15 clicks to finally get the pop-up to work and each time you click unsucessfully you year that bloop sound (like a pop-up).  I have disabled the pop-up blocker in IE and still no go.  Any ideas?This might be long and tedious but post a list of the software currently installed...Have you run your antivirus & antispyware lately / booted into Safe Mode & see if it pops up / run 'msconfig' to see what's running when you boot?

I thought you meant by save as save paint on a disc, but now I realized you meant if I saved the wordpad. Yes I saved it.

Hopefully someone else can advise you.
However, if it can't be done, or you feel it's easier, try out some of the software recommended here, under Graphics.
I can heartily recommend Paint.NET and the GIMP.
You could use them to save screenshots instead of MS paint if necessary.
Hope you get round it one way or another anyway, and sorry I couldn't be of more assistance.

You could probably just replace mspaint.exe from another computer with the same version.

I am unable to record a streaming VIDEO as a file on my system. PREVIOUSLY this was never a problem. I can download and view it but when I try to save it, it acts as if it is SAVED but then when I GO to view, it isn't there. This is my 3rd request for help. Can somebody please help me?

More than one post per problem is unnecessary, keep it together.

This is a problem that is driving me crazy, my wife makes scrapbooks so she is always saving pictures and web pages on the INTERNET....

Anyway, when she/I tries to save a picture, we RIGHT click and a box comes up asking what you want to do, in this case 'save picture as' or 'save page as' and then after that normally the box comes up asking where you want to save it....
The problem is that the first box asking what you want to do doesnt go away after that like it does in IE or Avant, and alot of times it blocks the box where you WOULD click 'save'....
If this sounds confusing check out the screen shot and you will see what I mean....
Alot of times you have to click all over the screen to get that box to close, this can get VERY annoying when you are trying to save a ton of pictures having to do this, I have searched through the options trying to figure out how to get it to stop doing this, but no luck....

I just recently scanned my first document on my new Brothers MFC. It is a 97 trust document I want to e-mail to my partner but I get an error message announceing that the SIZE of the attachment (71megs) is too large. I can't seem to find a way to partition off 10 pages at a time to email. The document was created in pdf format.

Any suggestions? I don't want to fax the darn thing.

If you have MSN messenger ....and your partner does as well ....sign on ,then when your both  are on  transfer it to them that way ......
It's quick and easy .

That Brothers MFC has fax capability, doesn't it?  So, why you didn't just fax it in the first place.  You don't have to feed sheets through one at a time, do you?Didn't want to fax, long distance costs plus their fax machine can only store 25 sheets of paper at a time. Problematic.

ThnxMost, if not all, instant messaging programs will allow sending FILES.  This includes Windows Messenger, which is part of all Windows computers.  Another MICROSOFT tool that can be activated in Windows computers and used to transfer files is NetMeeting.Super. I think he has NetMeeting, but definetly will try Windows messanger.

But I do have a question. People send these large picture files by e-mail. How come they don't get blocked? I am sure they use up some Megs?

ThnxI suspect your ISP or the recipient's ISP has a limit on file size that can be sent by email.  Individual photos would not be anywhere NEAR the 71megs you mentioned for your file.  2MB would be large for a photo, although I guess photos taken with high Megapixel cameras might be significantly bigger than 2MB.  Even if they're 5MB, that's still a small fraction of the size of your scanned document.gotcha. Makes sense.

Hi, I doubt if anyone of you never downloaded a file from a Web site.
Sometimes the file is encoded to be something like this:
http://filehost.com/files/EGSBQQQAALGFSHSTT, and if you just choose to DOWNLOAD the file
by right click and "Save As", you may have to wait for a few HOURS before you can finish the download progress.

MS office STD sr1, excel 2000 cannot enter chinese characters using MS Pinyin IME 3.0. most of our employees are chinese, when using excel, we can spell the chinese character out but when press enter to select the character, the selected character suppose display on the cells, but nothing show up. in MS word there's no such problem, i can enter chinese character in word, copy it and paste to excel. but i can't create it in excel, this case also HAPPEN on MS office pro. both version have problem with xp and chinese characters.

I've looked arond in the help files, but have been unable to find anything about this problem.  About a year ago, I built a COMPUTER for a friend of MINE.  It had been working fine until a few weeks ago, and now there is a problem I can’t resolve.  It has an ATI All In Wonder 9600XT video card in it.  You can look at jpegs and other picture files with no problem.  

The problem appears when he goes onto the Internet.  When there are pictures on the web page, the images are in very low resolution - so low that the individual “pixels” are at least an eighth of an inch on a side using his 19-inch LCD monitor.  Any other graphics look fine, it is only picture images that are AFFECTED.  He uses dial-up Netscape as an ISP, but the browser appears to be Internet Explorer (FIGURE that one out).  It doesn’t matter if he is using IE or Netscape as a browser, this problem still exists.  

If he saves one of the low-resolution images on his computer, the saved image also has the low-resolution problem.  I don’t think this is caused by the video card, as pictures on his computer that are not from the Internet look fine.   I have reloaded the driver, and that didn't do anything either.

Any help with this would be appreciated.  Thanks.

Is there some sort of "Internet Acceleration"? Some dialup providers offer this, but they do it by reducing resolution on graphics so it seems quicker.I think he is using an accelerator.  I'll pass this along and see if that fixes the problem.  Thanks.Let us know. fffreak, the free Foxit Reader is simply a reader, an alternative to Adobe Reader.  It will not allow him to fill in the blanks on his computer screen.  If one of the Foxit programs will allow filling in blanks on PDF documents, it would be Foxit PDF Creator, which is not free and, besides, I do not believe it has the capability to create PDF documents that can be filled in.

Ok here's the issue. When I recently reformated my COMPUTER cuz it was running ridiculously slow, and since then my firefox is giving me problems. It has trouble loading pages, either taking a long time to load or not loading at all. No error message, just loading for 5-10 MINS at a time. But sometimes it runs perfectly fine. I have an cable internet connection so it shouldn't take this long and my IE is working perfectly fine. My thinking was that I just needed to re-install firefox. So, I saved my profile folder that holds my bookmarks and stuff, and uninstalled Firefox. Restarted the comp, then downloaded the new Firefox 2.0.0.1 version to copy and paste my profile folder to the new one, thinking everything would be ok. Wrong again. This has become an incredible nuisance and would like to see if there are any suggestions out there that can HELP with this problem.

I'm not completely computer suavy but I do know the basics, so if anyone can help it would be very much appreciated.Just UNINSTALL and REINSTALL Firefox again.
It won't delete your profile to uninstall it, so don't worry.
The problem is, if you saved your profile from an older version and are using the same profile it may cause problems.
So try uninstalling and reinstalling it and see if that helps.
Another thing to try would be Firefox's safe mode, which starts Firefox with no extensions or themes.
If the problem doesn't occur in Firefox - safe mode, then it' an extension or theme problem.Did what you just suggested and the problem still remains, even in safe mode. I'm starting to get really irriated with this situation because I have a lot of school work to take care of and here in the resident halls, we're supposed to use Firefox only, (it's for a networking reason I guess).Remove Firefox again, and also move or delete the C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox folder, and the C:\Documents and Settings\{username}\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox folder.
This will delete or move all your preferences, your profile, extensions, themes etc, so if you want to keep the move the folders somewhere else, like the desktop, rather than deleting them.
Then reboot, and install CCleaner's Issues function to remove anything related to Firefox it finds left over in the registry, such as file associations, short-cut references etc.
Be careful when using CCleaner and backup your registry before you clean anything.
Then reboot again.
Then reinstall Firefox and see if it works with a fresh new profile, no extensions etc.same ol' problem.... Quote

Hi guys I have a question for you! I am apart of a business and we have certain computers, such as an "Engineering Computer" or a "Parts Computer" or a "Sales Computer" etc...

My goal is to CREATE images (much like Norton Ghost does) on a network drive, then create like a CD or a Floppy disk that will allow me to actually run an image template on that new computer. We used to do this at my old job but I didn't create the system and wasn't there long enough to learn exactly how it worked. I think we used Norton Ghost, but anything would be great.

Also... This is something I wouldn't need to purchase a license for every computer, since I will only be USING it first to make IMAGE TEMPLATES and then I would be using a floppy disk to initiate the restoration.

That's EXACTLY what I am looking for.. if you have anything close, great I'll look at it (Maybe i may like it more!) otherwise...

It's one of the cheapest utility that can backup (create image/clone of HDD) over network.
I find it very reliable and easy-in-use.
And keep in mind that developing a sound backup strategy and STICKING to it is the key to success...i've seen client's that had $3000.00 software solutions but didn't use them on a timely basis and hence no data.I've kind of looked at Acronis and I can't quite see the stuff that I am wanting.  I have tried using Norton Ghost on this and using the recovery CD but it failed to do a drive backup AND it is very difficult to get set up on my network.

I'm Sorry you're right... Let me explain exactly how I would like to see this network to go:

I would like a fairly decent setup regarding backing up different department templates.  Maybe not necessarily the actual hard drive image itself, but more so the types of programs (windows XP, MS Office, and then a random assortment of other software we use), all in a template.  We go to a new (or crashed) computer that has NOTHING on the hard drive (I will have formatted it should it have anything) and pop in a CD or Floppy (having the option of both would be great), and allow it to run into a "setup mode" to allow me to determine which "Image" or Department this is going to be for.  Then have it install everything.  That way the only thing I would have to do is name the computer (I would like even most of the XP functions to be set, such as the domain or the restrictions, etc...)

Working WITH The above system I need a way to keep track of licenses for my random programs (XP, MS Office, etc), and which computers they go to.  Say a license gets placed onto a computer, I would like to have it swing into the network and say "This computer has this license"


That's what I would like to see.. if you have any questions please let me know but I have decided what would be great.

Hello, I've got an older IBM ThinkPad that worked fine untill I let it sit over the holidays. I recently tried to START it...I get the IBM splash screen and then a blank screen with an icon of a padlock that doesn't do anything. I've never seen this icon before, and I can't get into the bios setup or the boot device preference. I'ts got a pentium 3 processor and I'm running MS XP. I'm having a really *censored* time with outlook. I'm using microsoft outlook 2002 at the moment and I'm having a lot of problems with it. I do not know if it's the server my e-mail RUNS on or outlook itself but according to the technicians who run the server that runs my internet, it's the e-mail client, i.e. that's the problem because using their onsite mail, I have no problems.

Anyways, to cut a story short i need help!
These are my problems:

1. When I send out mail to others WITHIN our own internal server (as in, if my e-mail address is [email protected], I get this problem when i send out mail to [email protected] or [email protected] people), their receive duplicate mail.

2. When I send out mail to others within our own internal server, I get the following message:

- These recipients of your message have been PROCESSED by the mail server:
[email protected]; Failed; 5.3.0 (other or undefined mail system status)

    Remote MTA mail4.surftown.se: network error

 - SMTP PROTOCOL diagnostic: 558 sorry, that message size exceeds my databytes limit (#5.3.4)

I know for a fact that the message does not exceed the limit because it's only a imple text message of a few KB!

3. My colleague cannot send out to external e-mail addresses like yahoo, hotmail, gmail etc. She can only send out to those within the server. ([email protected])

I have had this program since it first came out SEVERAL (maybe 5) years ago. On the web I found a place that talked about a free plugin that you could get for CREATING desktop icons in PSP 9.

I also have versionX, but it sucks and I choose not to use it.

At any rate, once I installed the plug in the programs would not RECOGNIZE it, then it started giving me trouble. Now this was in the day when PSP didn't give you these stupid passwords or reg numbers, it just installed easily and ran!

Well, after all the problems I removed PSP9 and reinstalled it....BUT, it did not install an desktop icon. So I went in to change the icon (which is one of those general non descript icons) and was given the message that the thing is locked and I can not do anything with it. Needless to say, I TRIED REMOVING the program and reinstalling it about 4 times. No Icon that I can do anything with.

Thinking I might have a problem with the disk, I cleaned it and tried to reinstall it......no worthwhile icon AGAIN!

So now what do I do? Is there a way to unlock the Icon?

I got a new laptop about a month ago. It came with 30 days trial of Norton which just expired. I got an email saying that BANK of america customers can get Mcafee free for one year, so I tried to take advantage.

Now here is my problem... for some reason when I try to download it I keep getting a message that says I don't have an internet connection. I'm on a wireless network, but I haven't had any connection issues (I'm online right now). I tried CONTACTING them, but that has been a JOKE! I can't even the the live chat (which is the only way to contact them) to work.

Also when I try to update Java it says something about not being able to go any farther because of my internet settings. So I'm thinking I have a problem with my internet security setting.

Please help! TIA.

Still more than it's worth. If you don't want to pay for a good av then you're better off with the free version of Avira or Avast than with McAfee.

I agree.  Comcast gives McAfee "free" (av and firewall) to it's internet customers because it decreases it's tech support calls substantially.

Let them fix any issues and re-boot after each scan...
