Solve : How to FORCE and uninstall?? |
|
Answer» Hi all! Sure hope you can help me. I downloaded a free UTILITY program to manage 'hybernation' at a 1:30 am. It is called WinMend or also AutoShutDown. This program is a serious headache! It shuts my computer down instead of hybernating and I lose any open info I hadn't saved. I have a brand new Dell Inspiron One19 with with Windows 7 Home Premium. Well, this may seem rather obvious. You don't yet have much on the new computer, so you could backup all your personal stuff to a USB stick. Right? Look around and find the key or option that does a full restore to factory installed SYSTEM. Files you downloaded are in a forler you can backup with you documents anbd stuff like that. After the backup, hit the button and get a fresh copy of the system. That is not really my personal idea. The program you have appears to be either hostile or poorly implemented. Either way you don't want this kind of thin g or any trace of it on your new computer. The above suggestion is what others have said before, I did not just invent the idea. The full system restore feature is there for a reason. But if this Dell does NOT have it, please come back and post. It should be a standard feature on all new PCs and Laptops other that custom built. Otherwise, removing a rogue program is a job for the VIRUS experts. |

Solve : Too Much Printed Garbage? |
|
Answer» When you go to the average website - recipes, catalogs, written material - and hit your PRINT key, you always end up up with far more material on the printed page than you really wanted. Wasted paper, wasted ink. My approach to cooking some new dish, as an example, is to "grab" the list of ingredients from 3 or 4 recipes, and wind up with my own personal refined ingredients listing. Then, why even print separate recipes if you merely want to extract part of their ingredients to combine with other ingredients in coming up with your own recipe? Seems to me some copy and paste would be the better approach here. And, when you get YOUR recipe completed, then you can save it to a WORDPAD file or whatever. Edit: I see truenorth and I are thinking along the same line here.soybean then i am in good company. truenorth If you use Firefox, I suggest Aardvark add-on: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/aardvark/ It'll allow you to isolate and print any single website frame. When you start Aardvark, you can select any frame, like this: Then after pressing "i" key selected frame will open in a new tab, ready for printing. And the winner is: Aardvark That will do exactly what I want. Thanks Broni. You're very welcome http://www.printwhatyoulike.com may also be worth checking out. I use their bookmarklet every time I print web pages. |

Solve : Office - word 2010 starter HP edition? |

Answer» HI, I use MS WORD EVERY day and often to write in different languages, hence I need lots of accents on the vowels, EG. éèàòùñ Is there a way to set up quick commands to paste all these vowels individually. Important info: I have got a mini HP, therefore no STANDARD keyboard. Mine doesn't have on the right end the keys with only numbers... I have heard of the word clipboard, but I have heard everytime you close word, it cancels what you have saved thanks. gMicrosoft Word 2010 Language Tools These advanced language tools are extremely useful, and with them you can extend the power of Word. If you have text that you want to change to a foreign language, this can be done in three ways using the Translate tool. Choose between Translate Document, Translate Selected Text (where you must first highlight some text to be translated) and Mini Translator. The translation occurs online, and languages can be set in Translate > Choose Translation Language. It doesn’t take long for the translation to be returned, and this is a better option that going to the trouble of opening a browser, finding a translation service, pasting the text in and waiting for the results. Finally, you can alter the dictionary language of your Word document via the Language tool. Solve : media monky help? |
|
Answer» I have win 7 and media monky and I used media monky to rip my CDs to MP3. I have read it seven times. Hard to follow. I don't see anything unclear whatsoever about this: "I used media monky to rip my CDs to MP3." He/she wants to rip CDs to mp3. Quote This is how the terminology in used in this corner of California: Oh! The sarcasm! Quote Rip a CD means convent conventional audio CD to wither WAV or MP3 files. Which is what he/she said. Like I said, read it again. (Have you been on the jungle juice?) The OP's first post seems crystal clear to me. She (I believe she is a girl) used Media Monkey Which is guess what? A ripping tool! to, as she said, Code: [Select]rip my CDs OK? Have you got that now? Sheesh. Anyhow, she then wrote that she did it again just to get the hang of it. OK so far? Now, she says, Quote it says Can't find audio CD. Have you got it yet? There has been something woefully wrong with your posts LATELY, Geek. I hesitate to use the word "troll", but you are certainly posting rubbish and then stubbornly defending it just like e.g. Billrich. Nymph4, I suggest you check if the CD is scratched or dirty, and ALSO consider that the drive may be faulty. Does the audio CD play OK in other drives or in an audio CD player? OK, now I get it. But there is something I am missing. She did say she did it with one CD 2 times. That is where I get lost. How would that change the CD? Did the failure come on the third try? But if she has made good copies twice, Why go for three? [tongue-in-cheek ]Really, I am unable to help. I have never ever tried to rip the same CD three times in a row, so I would ave not got experience I could share in this new area. [/tongue-in-cheek ] Really, I just wan ted to help. Sorry for the confusion. I am gong to go get some prune juice. Maybe that will help. |

Solve : Non-Standard Disc? |
|
Answer» My wife has a computerized knitting machine which uses pattern programs stored on 3.5 inch discs. These discs are formatted using a proprietary format developed by Tandy in the mid-'80s. They are designed to be read by a Tandy 100 disk Drive, which unfortunately has died. We are seeking someone who can repair this obsolete disk drive, but so far no luck. Can you see the filenaames in Explorer ? ? The disk format is not readable by a standard floppy drive. That's why they need a "special" drive to read it: Quote These discs are formatted using a proprietary format developed by Tandy in the mid-'80s. They are designed to be read by a Tandy 100 disk Drive, which unfortunately has died. I would have guessed that there are programs to read the disks anyway, much as there are programs for reading mac formatted disks in a standard 3.5" drive. But that doesn't seem to be the case. Not sure why it wouldn't be "read" by a standard floppy drive...the Tandy would have to have i guess a firmware modification. Quote from: patio on April 21, 2011, 10:42:53 AM Not sure why it wouldn't be "read" by a standard floppy drive...the Tandy would have to have i guess a firmware modification.A standard 3-1/2" floppy drive is controlled by the BIOS. the BIOS knows how to read two formats natively: FAT12 720K and FAT12 1440K. There is some hardware in the floppy drive itself for these two formats (witness the hole to determine if a disk is 1440 or 720K). However, even if it did know how to read- say, these disks- it still wouldn't know it was reading one of those disks. The only reason it can even tell a 720K disk and a 1440K disk apart is because of the hole in the disk itself. I have a old 3-1/2" floppy somewhere which replaced the "sensor" that detects the hole with a hardwired switch. putting the switch in "720K mode" with a 1440K disk caused a "General Error reading Drive A" same in the other direction. However, the floppy drive can of course be controlled directly by software. In the case of a Macintosh disk, which uses a 800K HFS format, the application takes complete control of the floppy drive, and since the software knows how to make sense of the disk format and what the floppy drive gives it back, it's possible to read it. a tandy-100 disk is a 3-1/2" disk, but just because it fits in the same drive doesn't automatically mean that you can read it. Just as you don't expect to be able to read a DVD in a CD-drive it's unreasonable to assume that just because the shoe fits, it should be comfortable. One analogy that might make sense is to think in terms of applications. Microsoft Word, for example, can read say, crysis SAVE files, but it can't make sense out of them. a 3-1/2" standard floppy drive might be able to read a Tandy disk, but it can't make sense out of it, and the built in floppy driver on PCs isn't going to be able to help either. Thus the need for proprietary software.I have endeavored to find a replacement disc drive to replace your damaged one. Here is a link to a site in the U.S. that lists one at $255.00 (ouch--but that MAY be acceptable to you). I would call them before ordering it to absolutely make sure it is for your machine. http://www.daisyknits.com/machinesforsale.htm Here is what appears to be a Canadian site offering a couple of Brother complete machines.http://www.pineridgeknitsew.com/used_knitting_machines_for_sale.htm Finally here is a site devoted to knitting machines (including many REFERENCES to Brother) that through contact may be able to assist you in locating parts. http://www.needlesknitting.net/pages/brother+350+knitting+machine.html Good-luck,truenorth Quote from: Barefoot_Tom on April 21, 2011, 05:38:51 AM The disk drive was made by Tandy, and was sold by a Japanese company called Knitking. The knitting machine was made by Brother and was also sold in this country by Knitking. Neither Tandy nor Knitking exist today, and Brother no longer makes knitting machines. This might be a better option: http://www.allbrands.com/products/abp28102.htmlI've checked the URL, and it points me towrd a program called a Disk Emulator. This program will allow one to read knitting patterns already loaded on the computer, and, with the purchase of a special cable, transfer them to a knitting machine. It will not read non-standard disks. You have MISUNDERSTOOD my suggestion. You're not going to read those disks without a Tandy 100 disk drive. I believe you can still utilize the knitting machine with the SilverKnit program. You'll have to research that for yourself.Sorry about the misunderstanding. The problem that exists is not that the knitting machine can't be used; nor is it that patterns can't be transferred from the computer to the machine. Both can be done. The problem is that there are a number of patterns on disks which can't be read anymore by the Tandy disk drive. I'm searching for a program which will allow an IBM PC to read those disks. Theoretically, such a program would not be difficult to write, but I'm not aware of anyone having done so. I thought someone in this group might know of such a program, or even have a suggestion as to where to go to find out if one exists.Since you didn't mention it, I've got to ask. Have you contacted Radio Shack (not a local store)? They bought Tandy in 1963, and phased out the name Tandy, and maybe you can find an old timer that knows something about the drive. Their corporate office is based in Fort Worth, TX. I know it's a long shot, but worth a try.Besides the issue of disk format, there is the issue of file structure. |

What other program can it be opened with?...JIMAre you in SAFE Mode? Did you open "command prompt" as administrator? After typing net stop winmgmt do you press Enter? After pressing Enter, you should see a message, that the service has been stopped. I log on in the SAFE mode as administrator, that is I have to enter my password to log on then I type CMD, ctrl shift enter. Thanks again....JIMBRONI Viola. I went through the whole procedure again and this time everything responded as expected. I was able to rename the repository file and reset it. HOWEVER, I still cannot create a restore point. I get the same error message. Thanks again. I will keep trying. This is not the only problem that I have. Solve : Transferring sound from one site to hard drive? |
|
Answer» hello all, On 22 February 2009, Techcrunch claimed that "[the] RIAA asked social music service Last.fm for data about its user's listening habits to find PEOPLE with unreleased tracks on their computers. And Last.fm, which is owned by CBS, allegedly handed the data over to the RIAA."[16] This led to several public postings from both Last.fm and Techcrunch, with Last.fm denying passing any personal data to RIAA.[17] The request was purportedly prompted by the leak of U2's then-unreleased album No Line On The Horizon, and its subsequent widespread distribution via peer-to-peer file sharing services and BitTorrent. I don't condone pirated music, but I sure don't condone the RIAA searching peoples computers with out their knowledge or consent.truenorth - how, technically (step-by-step) would you go about what you suggested ? thank you.rthompson80819 - thank you for replying. lastfm has gone through some major changes w/i the past two years, especially when you had to pay to download music to your own station. i agree about the copy protection, considering that they're BASED in great britain.i just noticed that my profile is outdated and when i clicked "modify" profile, nothing happened. what am i doing incorrectly ? thank you.myming, Before i get into the "step by step" instructions i should like to verify that you do understand the reasons as to why i do NOT recommend a through the air sound recording method. Then i also want to confirm that you understand that using the headset output from the computer where your music is currently located will eliminate those problems. Do you understand all that? The use of a pre amplifier may not be necessary depending on the level of audio sound the recording device is capable of detecting and reproducing with adequate quality. I do use a preamp when i am TRANSFERRING audio from a non amplified source. I am presuming that your current music from the subscription server is either time limited as to how long it can be accessed on the location where it currently is on the computer or is not convenient for WHATEVER reason and you wish to take the music that you have and relocate it to have improved access to it. I am treading a fine line here between assisting copyright infringement and helping you to (in a general sense) to a higher quality transfer of audio from your computer to a sound recorder (such as a cassette recorder or another computer's audio input port). You will need to have appropriate software on the destination computer (could be the same one that they originate from) --which you most likely already have with whatever sound recording software you have installed. The 1st objective is to get it off in high quality so you can do whatever you wish with it subsequently. Do you understand the concept? truenorthtruenorth - i'm with you so far...One thing you can also do is buy a Male-to-Male headphone cord (just an example), then download a program like MP3MyMP3 (my personal favorite). Take the Male-to-Male headphone cord, and do this: Then, use the MP3 recorder to record from the Microphone port, or Line-In port (if you so choose). This is what's known as the "Analog Hole," which circumvents any copy protection scheme simply because no digital data can be passed through the analog sound output. BTW, the DMCA does allow you to make a backup copy of your music, and assuming you don't intend to share or sell this backup, it's completely legal; you aren't treading any legal lines at all. I read the DMCA a few years back because I was bored, so I am sure of this.BARR - thank you. how does the mp3mymp3 program fit in with transferring music from a site to my pc hard drive ?myming, No disrespect intended but as you are still pursuing this issue it occurs to me that you have NOT done the transfers yet. In an earlier post i did tell you how to do it and perhaps incorrectly felt you were understanding my instructions. If you still have NOT done any transfers and still are unsure how to do it (by the method i suggested) please tell me so and i will try to further elaborate for you. If you can tell me what it is you do NOT understand that would help. The process is really not difficult. truenorth |

Solve : Business Cards with inserted Graphics? |

Answer» I'm trying to make business cards in Word 2003 onto an Avery template, but am having a problem with inserting a graphic onto it. I would like a graphic centered on the right side with three lines of text right up against it. But whenever I insert the graphic, the lines scatter all over the card. I set the Word Wrap for tight but it does nothing. I went to the tutorial on Microsoft's site. They have instructions on business card but not with graphics. Have any of you ever done this? How did you do it?Whenever I need to tightly control the position of text and images in a document I insert them it textboxes. The textboxes can then be positioned independently. |

Solve : Speech recognition question? |
|
Answer» I recently downloaded a trial version of a program that I was interested in and that came bundled with Sapi 5.1. I am operating Windows 7 Home Premium (64 Bit) and, before I realized I ACTUALLY had Sapi 5.3 already installed I mistakenly clicked "OK" when the program asked permission to place Sapi 5.1 on my system. Now I wish I had left "well enough alone" and I am worried I have corrupted and/or removed my original Sapi 5.3 files. I uninstalled the trial version of this program and I see no evidence of Sapi 5.1 in the programs listing in my Control Panel. Although I have a good microphone/headset combo, my SPEECH recognition program does not work well at all. I am not even able to complete the speech tutorial and so I believe I have done something to my Sapi 5.3 files. How to I reconstitute those files without disrupting all of the drivers, settings, programs, etc. that are already PRESENT on my system - if that is possible? If not, could SOMEONE PLEASE give me some instruction as to how to proceed? I have the original OEM installation disk of Windows 7 but I am afraid to do anything with it. Thanks very much for reading this post. |

Solve : Why do some here advise against Spybot S&D?? |
|
Answer» I have used Spybot for many years, but when I mentioned it on a post recently I got the impression it's not very popular? Why not? It's free and it is updated often. I'm not a superfan or ANYTHING, I'm really just curious. Is Spybot no GOOD, and if so, why, and if there is something I should be using instead, what is it?It's OLD school - also, tea timer has been known to cause significant problems. Today's BEST of breed anti-malware apps are MalwareBytes and Super Antispyware.Cool, thanks. I already USE Malwarebytes but hadn't heard of Super Antispyware.Other issue I know of with Spybot is that there is a virus out there with same name, so if you dont download it through the correct website, you can infect yourself. |

Solve : ..How To Print in Live Mail? |
|
Answer» In Windows 7 Live Mail, I cannot see anything to click on to print a letter I received. Any suggestions? THANKS! I cannot see anything to click on to print a letter I received.By "letter", do you mean an attachment to an email or the content of the message itself? If this is an attachment, you'll need to save the attachment and then open it or just open it without saving it first. But, you must open it before you can print it. Thank you so much. The content of the message was what I was referring to. I am happy now! |

Solve : Power ISO - Not Enough Memory?? |
|
Answer» Hi, I'm on a windows xp home laptop, and I'm trying to use power ISO to make an image of a DVD, onto my 8 gig USB drive, when the conversion reaches 99% Power ISO stops saying there isnt enough disc space to complete the process, have TRIED this a number of times with the same result. The file size limit for the FAT32 file system is 4GB.So what does that mean? I cannot make an ISO file over 4 GB? Is there anyway around this? Yes... Change the XP file system from FAT32 to NTFS... Make sure you have the system backed up 1st... Info Here... Quote from: patio on April 10, 2011, 09:15:33 AM Yes...Wow, that a major thing to do to my laptop it seems to me, dont want to play around with partitions, think I will pass, thanx for the info.... Nice to see you still around here Patio, you have been a great help to me in the past, cheers.... Good to seeya again as well... It's not quite as complicated as it sounds...as long as you have good backups you should be good to go...I will after I get an EXTERNAL hard drive to back up everything, dont want to take a chance until then.....Use Macrium Reflect....Free Home version... You owe me a Pint ! Quote onto my 8 gig USB driveThe file system is only per drive. Your system drive is undoubtedly already NTFS, the problem is that the drive you are trying to save the ISO to is using FAT32. You can change the filesystem of the USB drive using a command such as: Code: [Select]convert F: /FS:NTFS Or, when you get the external drive you could use it; it will probably format to NTFS by default so you will be able to store files >4GB on it.Nice catch...BC...didn't think of that... Most flash drive units are shipped FAT32... Quote from: BC_Programmer on April 10, 2011, 09:56:22 AM The file system is only per drive. Your system drive is undoubtedly already NTFS, the problem is that the drive you are trying to save the ISO to is using FAT32. You can change the filesystem of the USB drive using a command such as:Cool, did that and trying to convert to ISO now, will see in 30 MINUTES if it works.... Quote from: patio on April 10, 2011, 09:47:48 AM Use Macrium Reflect....Free Home version...I will do exactly that, and I think I owe you MORE then a few pints.... OK, thanx BC, this time it finished without the disc space error, but that leads me to another problem I was hoping would be solved after that fix.... I have had this problem alot lately and not with just this DVD but others, dont know why, the ISO finishes with no errors, but when I go to burn it or whatever, files are missing, my first clue something is wrong is the file doesnt look right, i.e. it doesnt have the gold ISO ICON, its just a white file like this- So then I right click it and open the file with power ISO and get this?- Only 87% done? No wonder files are missing, this same thing happens if I use Magic ISO, I dont get it.... Anyone? My SISTER is driving over to pick up her DVD tonight and if I cannot figure it out a gotta cancel her coming over..... |

Solve : Sound Problem (Vista)? |
|
Answer» I've just recently installed Vista and since the install I've been required to use the Blue connect(instead of Green) on rear of PC. No sound when using Green. In attempting to fix this I've lost but all of the sound. I've tried everything that I can think of but obviously not everything there is. If I had been running only Vista I could have lived with this, but I've been running Linux Mint for a few days and to receive sound there, I must connect to the Green. Yea! great sound with Mint and just a little scratching on Vista. I didn't want to have to pull out my PC to change from Blue to Green and vice versa, so now this is what I have. I've checked Device Manager, Control Panel and everything else I can think of and all (to me )appears OK. Any errors in device manager? No Allan. No errors in device manager. From the way everything looks, it should be working? overthehillSorry - I see you already said that in your first post. And you ARE getting the drivers from the OEM websites (or from the website of your system MANUFACTURER) and not from Windows Update, correct?Thks, Allan. I'm attempting to get them from the manufacturer nVIdIA and Intel . NVIDIA updates are from 2010 and I'm told most current.. SigmaTel (Intel) latest update, current (2006). overthehillDoing some research on your behalf (using "wrong speaker output when using vista") i found quite a number of comments and suggestions re your situation. here is one that seemed to have promise although it is using different hardware/software but may STILL have application. "jaykay Apr 27, 2010 4:27pm BST This worked on a Fujitsu Amilo PC after a new DVD Drive installed and running Vista Home premium 32 bit. No sound was coming out of the same pair of speakers used before the repair but all the system checks showed that Realtek was working. So I contacted the repair company and this was the fix: Open Realtek manager then plug your speaker lead into the front headphone socket and your speakers should start working. Obviously you need a CD playing, and at the same time an info box will pop up. This box will show a list of line in/line outs and have a tick against the Headphone entry. This proves that Realtek is working. If it's still not working then I can't help you, but if it is: Unplug the speaker lead and plug into the the Green audio connection at the rear. Your speakers will probably not work but this will bring up the info box again and there will be a tick against the Rear Speaker entry. Untick and then tick the Front Speaker entry, click OK, and your speakers should now work. This confusing (to me) setup is because Realtek is configured for surround sound but getting the information seems difficult if you don't use and so are not used to surround sound. Obviously this has only been used for a pair of speakers but if you are having similar problems with surround sound this might help." There were very many contributors to the search parameter i chose so you might want to do the same search and see if you find something that will work for you.truenorth Quote from: truenorth on April 20, 2011, 11:14:22 AM Doing some research on your behalf (using "wrong speaker output when using vista") i found quite a number of comments and suggestions re your situation. here is one that seemed to have promise although it is using different hardware/software but may still have application. Thks, truenorth. I'll certainly see what I can do with that. overthehillThere comes a time. After spending the last few days attempting to cure this problem, I've finally decided that it's easier to plug and unplug the speakers between Vista and Mint, than it is to waste any more time and effort trying to fix it. Not to mention the frustration. Extremely difficult to fix something when you're told that it ain't broke. I think that I've attempted every imaginable (and probably some unimaginable) thing, trying to get the speaker arrangement straightened out with Vista, but enough is enough. From what I've encountered ALONG the way, it looks like I'm not alone with this. Apparently there are others that have similar problems configuring their sound systems when running Vista. overthehillThat was the same conclusion i came to when doing the research. However it should be able to be overcome. Perhaps as a non priority thing when no other life's travails are in evidence and boredom is encroaching you can devote small amounts of time to see if the challenge can be overcome. All of this acknowledging that we all have only limited time on the clock of life truenorth P.S. I am NOT convinced that the issue is because you have MINT installed--it seems to be more a FACTOR of Vista. All of this acknowledging that we all have only limited time on the clock of life truenorthThanks truenorth. And, you're absolutely correct when you say that it's a Vista "thing". Since leaving XP (from which I had no choice) I have installed Vista twice(different drives) and both times I was required to use the "Blue" connect. Yes, when I get awfully bored (I mean awfully bored) I may look into it again. But, if this turns out to be the only concern (which I highly doubt) with Vista, I can surely live with that. I had heard so many bad things about Vista that I was a little intimidated prior to installing it. Just to show what some think of Vista, my local PC repair shop manager advised me(when I purchased a second drive there) not to load Vista. He STATED that he wouldn't sell ,install or repair PC's with Vista. I thought that was pretty strong and obviously I didn't take his advice. And,except for the hiccup in this thread, I've encountered no other real problems or concerns with Vista. Anyway, who needs a repair shop when you have CH I'm sure that repair guy couldn't have fixed my hiccup anyway,Vista or not. Thanks again, overthehillMany users, myself included, have problems with sound card drivers Realtek for Windows Vista. Most often the problem is that you can't hear the audio in Vista, no matter what. There are many sound cards based on Realtek chipset Ac ' 97 and this can be a nightmare to install Vista.Any body tell me how to solve this problem. Thank's in advance. Solve : Linked Hotmail Account? |

Answer» Do you know this person whose mail you can access? Yes, we used to live together so used the same computer (mine) quite a LOT and from memory we both could have had our PASSWORD saved so that when you're on the sign in screen you just click on your name and it automatically goes in without you having to enter your password. Could this be how they linked up at some point maybe? Could the OP make one to see it?I'm not sure what you mean by 'being played'! Do you think I'm FINDING this fun? I can't take a screen SHOT though without it SHOWING both email addresses. Sounds more like your computer still has the password for this other individual saved as a cookie.I have checked with them and they have changed their password, this wouldn't work then even if it were saved would it? I have changed my password a few times too. |

if you are using the BindingSource, remove the items from the BindingSource. Quote from: BC_Programmer on April 20, 2011, 09:45:31 PM if you are using the BindingSource, remove the items from the BindingSource. How do i do this?? I then click on the CheckBox to use data bound items, then under Data Binding Mode I have the Data Source set in the drop down box as BindingSource1.
