Solve : word 2007 symbol use?

Answer»

How do I store a symbol, from the symbol PULL down menu, elsewhere for easy access while typing a document?
useing word 2007.
Thanks
eddie460Put it in a clipboard.
You can have many clipboards.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/221190
Of course, that may seem to be an overkill. But if you are no using the clipboards for anything else, don't  worry.Open Word
CLICK on the Insert tab then in the Symbols group click Symbol, then More Symbols.
Choose the Font that the symbol is from (like Symbol or Wingdings).
Locate the symbol you WANT to use and single click to select it.
At the BOTTOM of the Symbol box there is a Shortcut key button here you will see if there is already a shortcut for that particular symbol you selected.4
If not, key in a shortcut and click on Assign.
Close down the windows and test your shortcut.Another option might be to create a simple macro that inserts the symbol.

Solve : How to FORCE and uninstall??

Answer»

Hi all!  Sure hope you can help me.  I downloaded a free UTILITY program to manage 'hybernation' at a 1:30 am.  It is called WinMend or also AutoShutDown.  This program is a serious headache!  It shuts my computer down instead of hybernating and I lose any open info I hadn't saved.

In a nutshell - its terrible!  I went to the normal control panel uninstall and it comes back saying "an instance of this program is running on your computer".

I have "Revo Uninstaller" I only use in emergencies or troubles.  Revo Unistaller doesn't list it as a program to uninstall.

I went to the 'program files', found it and was able to delete only some of the files.  This turned out to be a wrong thing to do.  It just kept shutting off my computer and there was NO mention of WinMend on my computer at all then.  SO, I went back and downloaded the entire program again.  I went again to Control Panel - Uninstall.  This time it uninstalled.

But, WHOA tonight I'm up late and the *censored* thing is still lurking and trying to shut off my computer.  I want rid of this darn thing!

I have a brand new Dell Inspiron One19 with with Windows 7 Home Premium.

Can someone tell me how to force this off my computer?

I've tried today again to delete the application file, but still get a "cannot delete file" type message.

Thanks to all of you who do such a FABULOUS job!  Pennie77 Quote

Well, this may seem rather obvious. You don't yet have much on the new computer, so you could backup all your personal stuff to a USB stick. Right?
Look around and find the key or option that does a full restore to factory installed SYSTEM. Files you downloaded are in a forler you can backup with you documents anbd stuff like that. After the backup, hit the button and get a fresh copy of the system.

That is not really my personal idea. The program you have appears to be either hostile or poorly implemented. Either way you don't want this kind of thin g or any trace of it on your new computer. The above suggestion is what others have said before, I did not just invent the idea. The full system restore feature is there for a reason. But if this Dell does NOT have it, please come back and post. It should be a standard feature on all new PCs and Laptops other that custom built.

Otherwise, removing a rogue program is a job for the VIRUS experts.

Solve : Need help with .bat file?

Answer»

Hi
I have a bat file that runs at night VIA task schedular that syncronizes things on 2 computers.
I wrote in the batch file that if an error occured the batch file would pause and the next morning
I could see what the problem was. Well obviously that doesn't work. APPARENTLY everything runs
silently and I never see anything.
Is there something I can do in the batch file that would flag me the next day if there is a problem?
Right now I have to go through the log files and I didn't want to do that unless I knew there was
a problem.

thanks
azswiftI had a ton of automated processes to keep track of at my last job, and what i did was add that if on error to execute another process that sent me an e-mail with subject line of the problem. Every day i checked my e-mail and know right then and there if there were any that error'ed out. If this is something you are INTERESTED in, i can see if I STILL have the e-mail from command prompt program to share with you, that might be burried on my ONE external drive. Hoping I brought a copy of this home with me and didnt leave it at the prior employer when I left.Hi

Actually I have tried that but I keep getting a MAPI error 2. I have Windows live Mail on my
computer. I can send email from the GUI but when I try to have another program do it I
get the MAPI error. Some info I have read on Live Mail says it is not fully MAPI compliant.

Solve : Excel for Mac 2008 formatting?

Answer»

This is my first time on a forum so hopefully I am doing this correctly . . . (or even in the RIGHT place?)

I am running a Power PC G4 with Mac OS X 10.5.8.

I have an Excel file with 350 names (rows) in Column A. Column B has a corresponding number that GOES with each name. I have both sides of a letter size sheet but need the top 1/3 of the front page for a large HEADER (graphic). I would like to have four (4) COLUMNs (A+B=1 COLUMN) on each page in alpha order by name.

I'm stumped . . . I'm a graphic artist and have spent very little time with Excel except to make lists . . . never anything this complicated. Of course, I'm trying to help a friend with his Eagle SCOUT project and have already created the header graphic (the easy part for me).

I no longer have a book so I went through the menus like I would a new or unfamiliar graphics program but was unable to fine anything that would give me that kind of control.

Any SUGGESTIONS as to where I could get some assistance?

Solve : Too Much Printed Garbage?

Answer»

When you go to the average website - recipes, catalogs, written material - and hit your PRINT key, you always end up up with far more material on the printed page than you really wanted.  Wasted paper, wasted ink.

Is there some sort of print utility that lets you use your mouse to make the standard "variable sized dashed rectangular box" around the material on screen which is important to you, and then print only the contents of the box you just drew?

I'm running a PC with Windows 7 Pro, feeding an Epson NX515 printer. Are you using special print options found on many websites to provide less wasteful printing or do you just use the main browser print command and print the page?  You should be using the special print options whenever available.  For example, on allrecipes.com, you will see a print button on the web page and it is much less wasteful than using the browser print command and printing the WHOLE page.  I've attached a screen capture from allrecipes.com to show what I'm talking about.

[recovering disk space - old ATTACHMENT deleted by admin]I do use those PRINT options whenever they are present.  However, often I don't want even the full page(s) they present.  My approach to cooking some new dish, as an example, is to "grab" the list of ingredients from 3 or 4 recipes, and wind up with my own personal refined ingredients listing.

I am aware that Adobe reader has a "snapshot" feature that allows you to "box and copy" particular information, but the majority of websites are not in .pdf format.I would just take a screenshot using the Print Screen button and then use paint to cut out what I need and print it.A very simple way to do this is with the page open that you wish to extract and then print only a specific portion of do the following.
1. Highlight with your cursor the specific portion you wish to use(eventually print).
2.Using the "EDIT" selection from your tool bar select"copy"
3. Open a window from a program such as "word" or "notepad" or something similar (whatever you are used to or prefer).
4. With that window open from the associated tool bar select "edit" select "Paste"
5. You now have the specific (and only) material that you want to print. Now use your preferred method to print the content of that document.
Voila your done --mission accomplished. truenorthWith allrecipes.com, when you use the print function on their website, you can choose whether to print a recipe on a full page, a 3x5 printout, or a 4x 6 printout.

Then, why even print separate recipes if you merely want to extract part of their ingredients to combine with other ingredients in coming up with your own recipe?  Seems to me some copy and paste would be the better approach here.  And, when you get YOUR recipe completed, then you can save it to a WORDPAD file or whatever.

Solve : Iomega zip 100 - how to unprotect?

Answer»

Hi..

I have been using the iomega zip 100 discs SINCE 1999. It remained my main mode of saving my work files and personal files for about 4 years. Whenever I upgraded my computer I would transfer the zip drive with it so that I could have continued access to my files. Previously when I RIGHT click on the drive there will be a password protect function. My last upgrade for that particular computer was to a Celeron processor running on Windows 98. this particular computer sits in my spare room and was not used regularly. Recently I decided to transfer all my zip drive files to an external hard disc but found that the computer failed to work.

I sent the computer for repair and upgraded the processor and Ram and OS to XP. Following that the zip drive still worked but when I right clicked, the password function is not there and I am unable to access my zip drives anymore. Zip drives that were unprotected works fine.

Can someone please help. Thanks. According to Iomega's website, you have to have their software installed in order to open password protected disks. Have you installed their software yet?

From their website: (I've removed some irrelevant bits)
Quote

READ/Write Protecting Zip Disks

IomegaWare software includes a special read/write protect feature that allows you to:
Write protect a disk through software instead of with a mechanical write-protect switch.
Write protect a disk and assign a password so that no one can add, edit, or delete files without entering the password first.
Read/Write protect a disk so that it cannot be read from, or written to, unless the user ENTERS the password you assign.

Setting Zip Disk Protection under Windows

Insert the disk you want to protect into your Zip drive.
Open My Computer and right click the Zip drive icon.
Select Protect from the drive shortcut menu.
Select the protection option you want to use. Click the Help button if you need information on any of the options.

NOTE: Although Zip disk protection options are set and removed using IomegaWare software, the ACTUAL protection mechanism is secured in the drive hardware. This means the disk protection cannot be by-passed using other software programs.

You can download the software by following this link, selecting your product, then your operating system.Thank you so much... I am going to give it a try and let you know how things go....Hi... I managed to retrieve my data. Many thanks

I've recently switched printers on my two computers and have a question about uninstalling some software.  It seems, even though I ran the uninstall, HP still has a bunch of software installed for my 7210 all-in-one, that i think I don't need.  Can ANYONE tell me which of these I can safely uninstall, please?
I have an HP computer and monitor, but a Cannon printer.  I use Adobe Photoshop for pictures or iPhoto on my Mac:

HP Photosmart 330, 380, 420, 470, 7800, 8000, 8200 seies
HP photo Smart Camera

Some of these are taking up alot of memory and I'm TRYING to speed up my PC.

Thanks I appreciate the help!
None of them take up any "memory" and removing apps will not speed up your system.Really??  So how do I speed up my computer.  It use to be so fast and now everything is AGONIZING.  Can you make any recommendations that will help me?

gMicrosoft Word 2010 Language Tools

These advanced language tools are extremely useful, and with them you can extend the power of Word.
If you have text that you want to change to a foreign language, this can be done in three ways using the Translate

tool. Choose between Translate Document, Translate Selected Text (where you must first highlight some text to be

translated) and Mini Translator. The translation occurs online, and languages can be set in Translate > Choose

Translation Language. It doesn’t take long for the translation to be returned, and this is a better option that

going to the trouble of opening a browser, finding a translation service, pasting the text in and waiting for the

results.
Finally, you can alter the dictionary language of your Word document via the Language tool. In Set Proofing Language

you can choose a language as your dictionary language either for the current document or by clicking the Set As

Default button you can select a default language for all documents!

email addy removed to prevent SPAMthis IS possible i BELIEVE. at work we made a system which used a modified drop down box.  it has a rectangle box around it with rounded edges which sounds like it could be made to do exactly as you want but i have no idea how they did it XD

However the first thing i suggest you do is MOVE to USING firefox , our system only works in firefox and safari because of things like this not being able to be done in explorer. Rounding edges using stuff like

-moz

commands are not possible in explorer to my knowledge , the easiest way to make rounded edges was to use sprites. so MIGHT i suggest you start easy by using firefox? XD

Solve : Excel - above 15 digits?

Answer»

A friend of mine has posed the following puzzle and I could not find an answer to it. Hence I am posting it here :

In excel, when you enter a series of digits exceeding 16 digits , you can not see them. If you keep a general format, a,bcde+Y  format appears (where Y is the number of digits entered).  If we, on the other hand, format it to "number" format, all the numbers after first 15 digits are coverted to '0'.

(Both in MS excel 2003 and 2010).

Why   and How to overcome this problem?

I have faith that , as USUAL, learned friends in this forum will guide me.

Thanks and RegardsLike most computer apps (COBOL is an exception), Excel uses the IEEE convention for storing decimal numbers as binary numbers. This results in a limitation on the number of digits that can be STORED - 15. But are you working with genuine numbers? Things like ISBN, telephone, etc numbers are not really numbers in the sense that we never perform arithmetic on them. In this case you have two workarounds: a) before entering the value format the cell as TEXT OR b) PREFACE the value with SINGLE quote (apostrophe) - this will neither display nor print (visible only in the formula bar).

Below:

into A1 I typed 1234567890123456789012345
into A2 I typed '1234567890123456789012345

Solve : media monky help?

Answer»

I have win 7 and media monky and I used media monky to rip my CDs to MP3.

And I did it on one CD 2. times just to get the hang of it and it worked.

So I used the same CD and put it back in and it plays the CD then I stop it and go to Tools Rip CD and it says Can't FIND audio CD.
Pleas put one in so I take it out and put it back and the same thing.

You need to know that:
A CD with MP3  is special, it does not play on all portable players
A CD the plays non any boom BOX is an audio CD.

Therefore a MP3 CD is NOT an 'audio CD.'

You do not 'rip' from a MP3 CD. You just copy it....Maybe you should read her post again, Geek? SLOWLY this time? (What's the matter with you these last few days?)

Apparently it is neither a hardware pr software problem. Rather the user is leaning by doing. Which is OK. No need to read instructions until you get stuck on something.

I have read it seven times. Hard to follow.
It sounds like he wan ts to rip from a MP3 CD, which is not an audio CD.

This is how the terminology in used in this corner of California:
Rip a CD means convent conventional audio CD to wither WAV or MP3 files.
Burn an CD means convert WAV and MP3 files to a CD that can be played on standard portable CD players

Copy any files to  CD,  select send  files to the CD  drive.  No format conversion is done.

But if he said something else, I can not do the inference.
No I wanted to rip an Audio CD to MP3 format.
But I got it to work in media monkey. Quote from: Geek-9pm on May 10, 2011, 02:34:06 PM

I don't see anything unclear whatsoever about this:

He/she wants to rip CDs to mp3.

Like I said, read it again. (Have you been on the jungle juice?)

The OP's first post seems crystal clear to me. She (I believe she is a girl) used Media Monkey Which is guess what? A ripping tool! to, as she said,

Code: [Select]rip my CDs
OK? Have you got that now? Sheesh.

Anyhow, she then wrote that she did it again just to get the hang of it.

OK so far?

Now, she says,

it says Can't find audio CD.

Have you got it yet?

There has been something woefully wrong with your posts LATELY, Geek. I hesitate to use the word "troll", but you are certainly posting rubbish and then stubbornly defending it just like e.g. Billrich.

Nymph4, I suggest you check if the CD is scratched or dirty, and ALSO consider that the drive may be faulty. Does the audio CD play OK in other drives or in an audio CD player?

OK, now I get it.
But there is something I am missing.
She did say she  did it with one CD 2 times.
That is where I get lost.
How would that change the CD?
Did the failure come on the third try?
But if she has made good copies twice, Why go  for three?

[tongue-in-cheek ]Really, I am unable to help. I have never ever tried to rip the same CD three times in a row, so I would  ave not got  experience I could share in this new area. [/tongue-in-cheek ]

Really, I just wan ted to help. Sorry for the confusion. I am gong to go get some prune juice. Maybe that will help.

Solve : Non-Standard Disc?

Answer»

My wife has a computerized knitting machine which uses pattern programs stored on 3.5 inch discs. These discs are formatted using a proprietary format developed by Tandy in the mid-'80s. They are designed to be read by a Tandy 100 disk Drive, which unfortunately has died. We are seeking someone who can repair this obsolete disk drive, but so far no luck.

Does anyone know of a program which can read these discs so that they can be stored on a PC hard drive? If so, my wife has a program which will let her transfer the files into the knitting machine from the PC.Have you tried to contact the knitting machine manufacturer (if they still are around) to see if they have software available on a current media that can be used on more modern computers? truenorthModel 100 Users GroupThe disk drive was made by Tandy, and was sold by a Japanese company called Knitking. The knitting machine was made by Brother and was also sold in this country by Knitking. Neither Tandy nor Knitking exist today, and Brother no longer makes knitting machines.

I've been in touch with Model 100 Users Group, and Rick Hanson was very helpful so far as parts for the drive were CONCERNED. He doesn't, however, know of any program that will read the disc. Can you see the filenaames in Explorer ? ?

The disk format is not readable by a standard floppy drive.

That's why they need a "special" drive to read it:

I would have guessed that there are programs to read the disks anyway, much as there are programs for reading mac formatted disks in a standard 3.5" drive. But that doesn't seem to be the case. Not sure why it wouldn't be "read" by a standard floppy drive...the Tandy would have to have i guess a firmware modification.

A standard 3-1/2" floppy drive is controlled by the BIOS. the BIOS knows how to read two formats natively: FAT12 720K and FAT12 1440K. There is some hardware in the floppy drive itself for these two formats (witness the hole to determine if a disk is 1440 or 720K).

However, even if it did know how to read- say, these disks- it still wouldn't know it was reading one of those disks. The only reason it can even tell a 720K disk and a 1440K disk apart is because of the hole in the disk itself. I have a old 3-1/2" floppy somewhere which replaced the "sensor" that detects the hole with a hardwired switch. putting the switch in "720K mode" with a 1440K disk caused a "General Error reading Drive A" same in the other direction.

However, the floppy drive can of course be controlled directly by software. In the case of a Macintosh disk, which uses a 800K HFS format, the application takes complete control of the floppy drive, and since the software knows how to make sense of the disk format and what the floppy drive gives it back, it's possible to read it.

a tandy-100 disk is a 3-1/2" disk, but just because it fits in the same drive doesn't automatically mean that you can read it. Just as you don't expect to be able to read a DVD in a CD-drive it's unreasonable to assume that just because the shoe fits, it should be comfortable.

One analogy that might make sense is to think in terms of applications. Microsoft Word, for example, can read say, crysis SAVE files, but it can't make sense out of them. a 3-1/2" standard floppy drive might be able to read a Tandy disk, but it can't make sense out of it, and the built in floppy driver on PCs isn't going to be able to help either. Thus the need for proprietary software.I have endeavored to find a replacement disc drive to replace your damaged one. Here is a link to a site in the U.S. that lists one at $255.00  (ouch--but that MAY be acceptable to you). I would call them before ordering it to absolutely make sure it is for your machine.

I've been in touch with Model 100 Users Group, and Rick Hanson was very helpful so far as parts for the drive were concerned. He doesn't, however, know of any program that will read the disc.
This might be a better option:  http://www.allbrands.com/products/abp28102.htmlI've checked the URL, and it points me towrd a program called a Disk Emulator. This program will allow one to read knitting patterns already loaded on the computer, and, with the purchase of a special cable, transfer them to a knitting machine. It will not read non-standard disks.
You have MISUNDERSTOOD my suggestion.  You're not going to read those disks without a Tandy 100 disk drive.  I believe you can still utilize the knitting machine with the SilverKnit program.  You'll have to research that for yourself.Sorry about the misunderstanding. The problem that exists is not that the knitting machine can't be used; nor is it that patterns can't be transferred from the computer to the machine. Both can be done. The problem is that there are a number of patterns on disks which can't be read anymore by the Tandy disk drive. I'm searching for a program which will allow an IBM PC to read those disks. Theoretically, such a program would not be difficult to write, but I'm not aware of anyone having done so. I thought someone in this group might know of such a program, or even have a suggestion as to where to go to find out if one exists.Since you didn't mention it, I've got to ask.  Have you contacted Radio Shack (not a local store)?  They bought Tandy in 1963, and phased out the name Tandy, and maybe you can find an old timer that knows something about the drive.  Their corporate office is based in Fort Worth, TX.

I know it's a long shot, but worth a try.Besides the issue of disk format,
there is the  issue of  file structure.

Now I do not have the slightest idea what they (IT) is talking about.

Some hosting services have templates anybody can use.
Why not get on FACE book and see what OTHERS are doing?

Solve : Transferring sound from one site to hard drive?

Answer»

hello all,

i listen to a pay site called "lastfm.com", which has you download an appliance called a "scrobbler" so you can add music to "my library radio" (which is exactly what it implies).

if i had very good speakers and a microphone, could i transfer "my library radio" to my hard drive ?

thank you.You could always go to FAQ or use search box -> http://www.last.fm/help/faq?category=User+ProfilesThe method you suggest is indeed a possible way. However it will often be the case that through the air recording via a microphone can be problematic due to a variety of factors IE too high volume when recording/too low/noise interference from extraneous sources/echo chamber effect due to recording environment/etc. If you can use the headset output plug on the computer into a preamp and then to an external recording device (many options possible here) then you will undoubtedly achieve a more consistent higher quality sound. truenorth I've never used last.fm but here is an article on the service from Wikipedia.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Last.fm

Knowing a little bit about the owners, I wonder if there is COPY protection involved.  The service is clearly not set up to download music.  You may find some additional roadblocks along the way.

The following two paragraphs from the article are troubling.

Quote

On 22 February 2009, Techcrunch claimed that "[the] RIAA asked social music service Last.fm for data about its user's listening habits to find PEOPLE with unreleased tracks on their computers. And Last.fm, which is owned by CBS, allegedly handed the data over to the RIAA."[16] This led to several public postings from both Last.fm and Techcrunch, with Last.fm denying passing any personal data to RIAA.[17] The request was purportedly prompted by the leak of U2's then-unreleased album No Line On The Horizon, and its subsequent widespread distribution via peer-to-peer file sharing services and BitTorrent.

Three months later, on 22 May 2009, Techcrunch claimed that it was CBS, the parent company of Last.fm, that handed over the data.[18] Last.fm again denied that this was the case, saying that CBS couldn't have handed over the data without Last.fm knowing

I don't condone pirated music, but I sure don't condone the RIAA searching peoples computers with out their knowledge or consent.truenorth - how, technically (step-by-step) would you go about what you suggested ?

thank you.rthompson80819 - thank you for replying.
lastfm has gone through some major changes w/i the past two years, especially when you had to pay to download music
to your own station.

i agree about the copy protection,
considering that they're BASED in great britain.i just noticed that my profile is outdated and when i clicked "modify" profile, nothing happened.
what am i doing incorrectly ?

thank you.myming, Before i get into the "step by step" instructions i should like to verify that you do understand the reasons as to why i do NOT recommend a through the air sound recording method. Then i also want to confirm that you understand that using the headset output from the computer where your music is currently located will eliminate those problems. Do you understand all that? The use of a pre amplifier may not be necessary depending on the level of audio sound the recording device is capable of detecting and reproducing with adequate quality. I do use a preamp when i am TRANSFERRING audio from a non amplified source. I am presuming that your current music from the subscription server is either time limited as to how long it can be accessed on the location where it currently is on the computer or is not convenient for WHATEVER reason and you wish to take the music that you have and relocate it to have improved access to it. I am treading a fine line here between assisting copyright infringement and helping you to (in a general sense) to a higher quality transfer of audio from your computer to a sound recorder (such as a cassette recorder or another computer's audio input port). You will need to have appropriate software on the destination computer (could be the same one that they originate from) --which you most likely already have with whatever sound recording software you have installed. The 1st objective is to get it off in high quality so you can do whatever you wish with it subsequently. Do you understand the concept? truenorthtruenorth -

i'm with you so far...One thing you can also do is buy a Male-to-Male headphone cord (just an example), then download a program like MP3MyMP3 (my personal favorite). Take the Male-to-Male headphone cord, and do this:

Then, use the MP3 recorder to record from the Microphone port, or Line-In port (if you so choose). This is what's known as the "Analog Hole," which circumvents any copy protection scheme simply because no digital data can be passed through the analog sound output.

BTW, the DMCA does allow you to make a backup copy of your music, and assuming you don't intend to share or sell this backup, it's completely legal; you aren't treading any legal lines at all. I read the DMCA a few years back because I was bored, so I am sure of this.BARR -

thank you.

how does the mp3mymp3 program fit in with transferring music from a site to my pc hard drive ?myming, No disrespect intended but as you are still pursuing this issue it occurs to me that you have NOT done the transfers yet. In an earlier post i did tell you how to do it and perhaps incorrectly felt you were understanding my instructions. If you still have NOT done any transfers and still are unsure how to do it (by the method i suggested) please tell me so and i will try to further elaborate for you. If you can tell me what it is you do NOT understand that would help. The process is really not difficult. truenorth

Have you considered do an removal WMP and using almost any other popular Media player?

Another alternative is to use and older version of WMP.

Solve : Business Cards with inserted Graphics?

Answer»

I'm trying to make business cards in Word 2003 onto an Avery template, but am having a problem with inserting a graphic onto it. I would like a graphic centered on the right side with three lines of text right up against it. But whenever I insert the graphic, the lines scatter all over the card. I set the Word Wrap for tight but it does nothing. I went to the tutorial on Microsoft's site. They have instructions on business card but not with graphics. Have any of you ever done this? How did you do it?Whenever I need to tightly control the position of text and images in a document I insert them it textboxes. The textboxes can then be positioned independently.
Put the image in one box and the text in another. For better control, put each line of text in its own box, or even each word.
Set the textbox fill property to 'No Color' so it will be transparent and set the line color to 'No Color' so the outline doesn't show.Since you have Word 2003, that means you have Office 2003, right?  And, you have Publisher 2003, right?  I'd be using Publisher for business cards, not Word.  Try Publisher.  I think you'll find it is for flexible for creating business cards. No, Soybean, I don't have Office w/ Publisher; only Word.

I tried you method, Bromide, & made one card but can't copy & paste it onto all the other cards. How do you do it?I believe Word simply isn't going to do what you want to do.  To make business cards with Word, you need to use the LABELS feature and it simply does not work with inserted graphics.  I did try using Word's WordArt and that seems to work OK in a label; that would at least give you a way of of going beyond simple text.

Here's an online way of creating business cards and it ACCOMMODATES graphics.  See http://www.degraeve.com/business-cards/.  You can also order business cards online for a low cost.  See http://www.vistaprint.com/business-cards-tabbed.aspx?rd=3&GP=4%2f23%2f2011+9%3a50%3a33+AM&GPS=1530581860&GNF=0&GPLSID=It is difficult to select multiple textboxes. You cannot simply click & drag as you can with text.

Select one textbox [make sure you’ve selected the box and not just its contents]and then, while HOLDING down the Shift key, click each of the other textboxes. If you has already made the backgrounds and borders of the boxes invisible you will have to guess where they are.

If one textbox is completely behind another you will have to first make it larger until PART of it extends beyond the one above so you can click on it. Or place the small textbox above the larger one.  [Select one of the textboxes, right-click on it and select Order> Bring to Front, Send to Back, Bring Forward or Send Backward.]

When you have them all selected, release the Shift key and use the standard Copy-Paste routine to paste them into each cell of the template.
I can't select any text box at all. If I could, I would have copied & pasted one box at a time.

From another forum I got the suggestion to create one document with graphics, another with text, then merge the two. I never did Merge Documents with cards before & their example wasn't quite what I had in mind. But it gave me the idea to make the two templates on file, then print each of them onto the same set of cards; just run the cards thru the printer twice.

Meanwhile I discovered an alternative on my own. I chose the landscape direction, that is with each card in the verticle position, with the graphic above the text, centered. That works & looks great. But I'd like another set with the cards in the horizontal position (the portrait direction), so will use the above idea.

Thank you all for taking your time to help me out.I am puzzled that your textboxes are not selectable.  Is this true whenever you use textboxes? Is it because the textbox is already formatted without visible outline? I have used this method in Word 2003's built-in business card template and it worked all right.

I have never tried merging documents and can offer no advice on that method. The concept of printing a page in multiple passes through the printer can be a work-around for an otherwise insoluble problem, but should not be necessary in this case unless all else fails.

I will mention one other tactic with textboxes that might work for you. First, composed your design by placing each image or text element in a textbox. Format each box with no fill color so that one box won’t hide the one behind, but do not make the outline invisible. This will LEAVE each box clearly visible while you arrange all the elements of the design. When finished, select all the boxes using the shift-click method, clicking on the outline of each box. [I hope this works for you.]

When all the boxes are selected at once, right-click on them and select Grouping> Group. This will lock all the boxes together as a single entity which will be easier to manage than individual boxes. Once grouped you can copy and paste the boxes all at once and position them more easily. You should still be able to right-click on the boxes and select Format Object…[the group is called an object.] Now you can remove the outline from all the boxes at once by selecting Line Color: No Line.

Some says something BOUT changing  the UAC to default but it is on default since I brought it... i tried to uninstall the gadget but i dont know how... does this mean I've downloaded a corrupted file? is there anywhere to fix this? I am not familiar with your recently added windows sideshow gadgets. However i note on the page that your referenced that they do mention some compatibility performance issues with certain gadgets and certain windows operating systems. That may be a factor. However to your QUESTION re uninstall here is a link to another Microsoft site that deals with that and many other issues related to sideshow. Hopefully you will resolve your issues from there. Solve : Speech recognition question?

Answer»

I recently downloaded a trial version of a program that I was interested in and that came bundled with Sapi 5.1.  I am operating Windows 7 Home Premium (64 Bit) and, before I realized I ACTUALLY had Sapi 5.3 already installed I mistakenly clicked "OK" when the program asked permission to place Sapi 5.1 on my system.  Now I wish I had left "well enough alone" and I am worried I have corrupted and/or removed my original Sapi 5.3 files.  I uninstalled the trial version of this program and I see no evidence of Sapi 5.1 in the programs listing in my Control Panel.  Although I have a good microphone/headset combo, my SPEECH recognition program does not work well at all.  I am not even able to complete the speech tutorial and so I believe I have done something to my Sapi 5.3 files.  How to I reconstitute those files without disrupting all of the drivers, settings, programs, etc. that are already PRESENT on my system - if that is possible?  If not, could SOMEONE PLEASE give me some instruction as to how to proceed?  I have the original OEM installation disk of Windows 7 but I am afraid to do anything with it.  Thanks very much for reading this post.

Respectfully,

JohnReinstall Sapi 5.3Hi Allan,

Thanks very much for reading and giving me an answer.  Unfortunately, I am not sure how to re-install Sapi 5.3.  Do I insert my original disk?  If so, what do I do next?  I sorry to be so uninformed.  If you know of a site where I can read about just how to do that I will head over in that direction and try to learn something!  Thanks for your patience.

Respectfully,

JohnYes, if you have the original program disk just insert it and reinstall the app.Hi Allan,

I attempted to find a site that offered a Sapi 5.3 download and, in looking, I found out that you can not download Sapi 5.3.  It is apparently built in to the Windows 7 operating system.  Therefore, I believe I must involve the original Windows 7 disk (which I have).  I am faced with either finding the appropriate Sapi 5.3 files and figuring out where to put them or re-installing Windows 7 which I am afraid I do not have the confidence or the experience to do.  I put the original Windows 7 OEM disk in my DVD drive and saw that I could either copy and download files from that disk or I could "upgrade" or "install" the Windows 7 operating system.  I was really hoping for a way to use the original disk to "repair" Windows 7 but I do not see that option.  Any suggestions?

Thanks!

John

Solve : Why do some here advise against Spybot S&D??

Answer»

I have used Spybot for many years, but when I mentioned it on a post recently I got the impression it's not very popular?  Why not?  It's free and it is updated often.  I'm not a superfan or ANYTHING, I'm really just curious.  Is Spybot no GOOD, and if so, why, and if there is something I should be using instead, what is it?It's OLD school - also, tea timer has been known to cause significant problems. Today's BEST of breed anti-malware apps are MalwareBytes and Super Antispyware.Cool, thanks.  I already USE Malwarebytes but hadn't heard of Super Antispyware.Other issue I know of with Spybot is that there is a virus out there with same name, so if you dont download it through the correct website, you can infect yourself.

In Windows 7 Live Mail, I cannot see anything to click on to print a letter I received.  Any suggestions?  THANKS!
There is a small icon, the shape of a printer, along the toolbar

Mine reads - New / Reply / Reply All / Forward / Delete / JUNK / Sweep / Mark as / Move to / PRINT   After my "move to" there is a FLAG, eyeglasses, encoding, copy to, copy & find.  Nothing about a printer.  Thanks!Right clik the toolbar and add the print icon...Also, the Print command is on the FILE menu.  Or, Ctrl/P will print an EMAIL message.

By "letter", do you mean an attachment to an email or the content of the message itself?  If this is an attachment, you'll need to save the attachment and then open it or just open it without saving it first.  But, you must open it before you can print it.    Thank you so much.  The content of the message was what I was referring to.
I am happy now!

Solve : Power ISO - Not Enough Memory??

Answer»

Hi, I'm on a windows xp home laptop, and I'm trying to use power ISO to make an image of a DVD, onto my 8 gig USB drive, when the conversion reaches 99% Power ISO stops saying there isnt enough disc space to complete the process, have TRIED this a number of times with the same result.

It doesn't make any sense to me as its a 8 gig USB, and the file is only 4.03 gig, I have done quite a few ISO files before with no problem, although I dont think they were over 4 g, anyone have an answer to this? I tried a google search for this problem but didnt come up with anything.....

The file system is only per drive. Your system drive is undoubtedly already NTFS, the problem is that the drive you are trying to save the ISO to is using FAT32. You can change the filesystem of the USB drive using a command such as:

Code: [Select]convert F: /FS:NTFS

Or, when you get the external drive you could use it; it will probably format to NTFS by default so you will be able to store files >4GB on it.Nice catch...BC...didn't think of that...

I have had this problem alot lately and not with just this DVD but others, dont know why, the ISO finishes with no errors, but when I go to burn it or whatever, files are missing, my first clue something is wrong is the file doesnt look right, i.e. it doesnt have the gold ISO ICON, its just a white file like this-

So then I right click it and open the file with power ISO and get this?-

Only 87% done? No wonder files are missing, this same thing happens if I use Magic ISO, I dont get it....
Anyone? My SISTER is driving over to pick up her DVD tonight and if I cannot figure it out a gotta cancel her coming over.....

Solve : Sound Problem (Vista)?

Answer»

I've just recently installed Vista and since the install I've been required to use the Blue connect(instead of Green) on rear of PC. No sound when using Green. In attempting to fix this I've lost but all of the sound. I've tried everything that I can think of but obviously not everything there is. If I had been running only Vista I could have lived with this, but I've been running Linux Mint for a few days and to receive sound there, I must connect to the Green. Yea! great sound with Mint and just a little scratching on Vista. I didn't want to have to pull out my PC to change from Blue to Green and vice versa, so now this is what I have. I've checked Device Manager, Control Panel and everything else I can think of and all (to me )appears OK.
When I check the Test Buttons(Control Manager) I do get a faint sound, but very faint. I've tried a few tunes with different players but very faint and scratchy. I've downloaded new drivers for everything I could find, but most often I'm told that I have the latest drivers. In order to receive even a scratching now (Vista), I must connect to the green. Like I mentioned above, previously I had to use the Blue?. So, I'm told all devices are working properly but obviously they're not.

Anyway,I've attached a few png's just to identify what I have and what I've checked. And, I sure would appreciate your thoughts on this. Thks, overthehill

btw, just for more info. and for comparison to the  png's , here's what I see when checking "Sound Preferences" in Mint.

No Allan. No errors in device manager. From the way everything looks, it should be working? overthehillSorry - I see you already said that in your first post. And you ARE getting the drivers from the OEM websites (or from the website of your system MANUFACTURER) and not from Windows Update, correct?Thks, Allan. "jaykay  Apr 27, 2010 4:27pm BST
This worked on a Fujitsu Amilo PC after a new DVD Drive installed and running Vista Home premium 32 bit. No sound was coming out of the same pair of speakers used before the repair but all the system checks showed that Realtek was working. So I contacted the repair company and this was the fix:

Open Realtek manager then plug your speaker lead into the front headphone socket and your speakers should start working. Obviously you need a CD playing, and at the same time an info box will pop up. This box will show a list of line in/line outs and have a tick against the Headphone entry. This proves that Realtek is working. If it's still not working then I can't help you, but if it is:

Unplug the speaker lead and plug into the the Green audio connection at the rear. Your speakers will probably not work but this will bring up the info box again and there will be a tick against the Rear Speaker entry. Untick and then tick the Front Speaker entry, click OK, and your speakers should now work.

This confusing (to me) setup is because Realtek is configured for surround sound but getting the information seems difficult if you don't use and so are not used to surround sound. Obviously this has only been used for a pair of speakers but if you are having similar problems with surround sound this might help."

Thks, truenorth. I'll certainly see what I can do with that. overthehillThere comes a time. After spending the last few days attempting to cure this problem, I've finally decided that it's easier to plug and unplug the speakers between Vista and Mint, than it is to waste any more time and effort trying to fix it. Not to mention the frustration. Extremely difficult to fix something when you're told that it ain't broke. I think that I've attempted every imaginable (and probably some unimaginable) thing, trying to get the speaker arrangement straightened out with Vista, but enough is enough. From what I've encountered ALONG the way, it looks like I'm not alone with this. Apparently there are others that have similar problems configuring their sound systems when running Vista. overthehillThat was the same conclusion i came to when doing the research. However it should be able to be overcome. Thanks truenorth. And, you're absolutely correct when you say that it's a Vista "thing".  Since leaving XP (from which I had no choice) I have installed Vista twice(different drives) and both times I was required to use the "Blue" connect. Yes, when I get awfully bored (I mean awfully bored) I may look into it again. But, if this turns out to be the only concern (which I highly doubt) with Vista, I can surely live with that. I had heard so many bad things about Vista that I was a little intimidated prior to installing it. Just to show what some think of Vista, my local PC repair shop manager advised me(when I purchased a second drive there) not to load Vista. He STATED that he wouldn't sell ,install or repair PC's with Vista. I thought that was pretty strong and obviously I didn't take his advice. And,except for the hiccup in this thread, I've encountered no other real problems or concerns with Vista. Anyway, who needs a repair shop when you have CH
I'm sure that repair guy couldn't have fixed my hiccup anyway,Vista or not.

Thanks again, overthehillMany users, myself included, have problems with sound card drivers Realtek for Windows Vista. Most often the problem is that you can't hear the audio in Vista, no matter what. Solve : HTC contacts from back up?

I backed up my computer on a external hard drive and thought all my contacts stored in outlook would be backed up also. I then upgraded to Windows 7 and now want to pull them from the backed up FILES. I have found a file Outlook.en-us and a few ICO files called contacts. but i can not open or extract them. Import it into Outlook or, even easier, REPLACE the new Outlook.pst file with the one you backed up (assuming you reinstalled OFFICE / Outlook rather than just doing an upgrade of W7 over your previous OS).Hi, searched for the outlook.pst on the external hard drive and came up with NOTHING. there are other files like

I suspect this may the clue.

Could you contact this person to discuss this?I'd rather not contact them.  I just wanted to know if they could see mine really.  We're being played...I think a screenshot of the said page would bring justice to this discussion. Could the OP make one to see it?I'm not sure what you mean by 'being played'!  Do you think I'm FINDING this fun?

I can't take a screen SHOT though without it SHOWING both email addresses.  Sounds more like your computer still has the password for this other individual saved as a cookie.I have checked with them and they have changed their password, this wouldn't work then even if it were saved would it?  I have changed my password a few times too.

Solve : Burner only burns 1K shortcuts of audio files?

Answer»

After I burn an audio cd in either Nero or Windows Media Player, it doesn't play in any other cd player and the files on the actual cd are only 1K shortcuts of the audio files I initially dropped into the burn list.

I simply drag and drop the files into the designated area, whether its in Nero or WMP.
The files show up as normal, actual files in the burning programs without any trace of them being shortcuts to anything.
During the burning process, the burner takes same time to burn the files as if they were real audio files.
Only after I open the cd in the file browser the file type reads "CD audio track shortcut" with a size of 1K per each track.
This happens with both wma and mp3 files.

What I have tried to do so FAR is uninstalled the drive in device manager and REBOOTED the computer thus reinstalling it. I have have no idea where to go next. I can't find the fix for it anywhere in the settings of both Nero and WMP and haven't changed any setting.

This problem just began occurring recently and before it began I was doing the same exact steps I'm doing now without any problems.

Any help would be appreciated.you're burning it as an Audio CD. TECHNICALLY an Audio CD doesn't have any files at all, but their tracks are OFTEN represented as files. Since the files are "make-believe" by the computer, and don't truly exist (and are, in essence, shortcuts to play each track) they really do not have a size.

Don't know why it wouldn't be playing in other players. Maybe they aren't capable of reading the brand of disks you selected, or you forgot to finalize the disk.chimako, I am not a big fan of either of the burning programs you are using. Not withstanding the comments of BC i would like to suggest an alternative software which is free and in my opinion is far superior to the 2 you have mentioned. It is called "CD Burner XP" and can be downloaded from here:
http://cdburnerxp.se/download
truenorthI know this is an old thread and all but i want to get to the bottom of this.

I've been having this problem for a while now but only on my mum's pc which runs windows xp , i run windows 7 and the only thing ive ever burned to cd is data.

When i used  both windows media and koyote soft's free easy burner (which has facilities for audio cds , i use it for backup mainly , itseems very good) both would burn shortcuts. Now when i put these cds into my hifi the disk tray moves onto the next slot (3 disk tray ftw ). That would show that the disk isnt being recognised as being there at all!

Now to my next point. When a cd is put in which is bought from say a record company , why is it that the audio on these disks (unless write protected) is NOT shortcuts? What is the difference?

What has been said here points to the software NOT being the problem. So it must be either the disk or the way in which the disk is burned! Assuming its no 3rd party program , the most likely problem is the way in which the disk is burned (since a disk is just a mirrored surface with holes in it and a plastic cover)

Could it be that the audio shortcuts are , in fact ,on the disk but are 'hidden' so the shortcut actually points to a sector on the disk which is not seen by a user , thus 'not there'?All audio cds have these "shortcuts". They are actually 44 bytes each, but due to the way Windows Explorer shows file sizes under 1024 bytes in size, they show up as "1K".  This is normal, and is how audio CDs are seen by computer operating systems. They are, if you like, "pointers" to the digital audio data which is stored in a way not visible to the computer operating system. If you put any audio CD into a computer CD/DVD drive, whether it is pressed (store bought) or burned in a computer, that is what you see. Try it if you don't believe me.

Here is a store bought CD, called "Raoui" by the French/Algerian singer Souad Massi.

Here is what you see in Windows Explorer

Command prompt sees this (the disc was released in 2002, by the way)

So to find the reason why the audio CDs burned on your mothers computer won't play in your hi-fi, I would be looking at such things as the quality of the CD blanks and maybe try a different brand, and also maybe the burner is on the way out, for example it is out of alignment or the write laser is GETTING weak. Some hi-fi systems are very fussy about burned disks. Have you tried the burned disks from your mother's PC in various computers, (in Windows Media Player), and other hi-fi systems?

And, as BC_P wrote,

you forgot to finalize the disk.

Solve : Visual basic 2008 Media Player?

Answer»

Hi there,

Hope someone can help me here.  I'm trying to build my own media player.  I've managed this, however there are some bugs I need to fix.  I'm not quite sure how to do this though.

I can open a dialogue box which will select multiple files, however it won't insert the multiple files in to the list box.  It will only open the first one selected and insert that one.

Second, Once I have files in my list box I'm unable to delete these from the list box.

I have the binding source filter set to "All Files|*.*"

I've attached a pic of what the design looks like and the code I'm using is as below :

Public Class frmMusicPlayer

    Private Sub Button1_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button1.Click

        OpenFileDialog1.ShowDialog()

    End Sub

    Private Sub OpenFileDialog1_FileOk(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.ComponentModel.CancelEventArgs) Handles OpenFileDialog1.FileOk

        BindingSource1.Add(OpenFileDialog1.FileName)

    End Sub

Private Sub ListBox1_Click(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles ListBox1.Click

        Try

            WinPlayer1.URL = ListBox1.SelectedItem.ToString

        Catch ex As Exception

        End Try

    End Sub

    Private Sub ListBox1_SelectedIndexChanged(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles ListBox1.SelectedIndexChanged

    End Sub

    Private Sub BindingSource1_CurrentChanged(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles BindingSource1.CurrentChanged

    End Sub

    Private Sub cmdExit_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles cmdExit.Click

        End

    End Sub

    Private Sub ImportToolStripMenuItem_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles ImportToolStripMenuItem.Click

        OpenFileDialog1.ShowDialog()

    End Sub

    Private Sub CloseToolStripMenuItem_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles CloseToolStripMenuItem.Click

        Application.Exit()

    End Sub
End Class

Many thanks to all who can help on this one!!

[recovering disk SPACE - old attachment deleted by admin]you should use OpenFileDialog.FileNames instead of .FileName when allowing the selection of multiple files.

Personally what I do when using the OpenFileDialog is, since it's Modal, have it in it's own method- that is ,encapsulate all the necessary logic in one place. In your case, it would be the ImportToolStripMenuItem_Click() event.

The way you have it now, you are simply responding to the OK event, and effectually "separating" the actual click event from what actually happens. What you could do is something like this (untested):
Code: [Select]Private Sub ImportToolStripMenuItem_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles ImportToolStripMenuItem.Click
        Dim iterateValue as String
Dim ofd as OpenFileDialog= new OpenFileDialog()
        ofd.Filter="All Files|*.*"
        ofd.MultiSelect=True
        If ofd.ShowDialog=DialogResult.OK Then
           For Each iterateValue in ofd.FileNames
               'ListBox1.Items.Add(iterateValue)
               BindingSource1.Add(iteratevalue)

           Next

        End If
End Sub

That's g enerally the way I use the OpenFileDialog- as an object, rather then as a control. (probably because using the control feels far too much like a throwback to Visual Basic 2 ). Set the properties right then and there, show the dialog, and then test if they pressed OK with the return value and proceed ACCORDINGLY by adding the selected files to the bindingsource (or the listbox, which I have commented out).

hey mate,

how about you post your entire source code so that i can give u a better hand on this project cause i am also sick of all the dodgy media players out there.Hey BC,

Thanks for the help, I've not had TIME to try it.  I'll have a test at it tonight though.  Sorry for the late reply, I've just been really busy.

I'll LET you know how I get on!

Hey Muso... That was the full source code.

B2  Hi,
You can create a WPF user control and place it in a .aspx form and Also if you use WPF XML for the user interface, and using aspx to handle back-end get what you need to switch to it from the aspx  WinForm. If you found this help, do not be afraid to add to my agent. There are only 10 types of people in this world. Those who understand binary.Hi there,

Thanks again BC!!!  It worked, thank you so much.  However I'm not able to remove any items from the listbox.  Any ideas...

if you are using the BindingSource, remove the items from the BindingSource. Quote from: BC_Programmer on April 20, 2011, 09:45:31 PM

How do i do this??  On the list box in design view when I select the ListBox I can click the arrow to bring up the ListBox tasks.  I then click on the CheckBox to use data bound items, then under Data Binding Mode I have the Data Source set in the drop down box as BindingSource1.  So I'm not actually sure how to remove the items from the actual BindingSource itself.
