Solve : executable files?

Answer»

My COMPOSER FRIEND, transferred a short audio tape for me.  GMAIL allows me to attach the file but it won't send because it's an executable file (AmazonMP3 downloader.exe.)  Can anyone tell me how to save this file into ANOTHER extension so I can send it out?  Thanks a bunch.
Why don't you just send them the link to the page with the download on? Then they can download it themselves.

Solve : MSP Agent?

Answer»

I'm using labtech for our MSP work. (we switched from packettrap).  We're currently running about 25 sites with approx. 30-100 computers PER site.

There are a lot of features that we really don't use and THINK it's overkill and am looking for some suggestions on what you guys use for your MSP work?

We really only need windows patching deployment, traffic analysis, remote access via rdp or vpn or whatever, file transfer CAPABILITIES and some very basic scripting.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Solve : No FTP?

Answer» I'm connecting with my server in that password is approved etc., (WS-FTP) but when it comes to LIST for the directories at my server it fails. Also, I cannot connect to a couple of 3-D chat sites that apparently rely on FTP, so it appears to be a general incoming failure and not my WS-FTP.

I ran a diagnostics which said my firewall was likely the reason for failure of the FTP test, but turning off the firewall did not correct the problem.

Anyone have a quick and dirty ANSWER?

Thanks in advance.
Please do not type in bold.
Are you experienced with FTP clients? I just had to ask.
WS-FTP is a good WORKHORSE. If you five things right, it works.
1.) An internet connection that allows FTP. Contact your provider.
2.) The correct address for FTP
    rihgt : ftp.geek9pm.com
    wrong: wvw.geek9pm.com
3.) The exact user name. Close does not do it.
4.) The absolute exact password.
5. )Avoid the habit of double clicking on things when not  needed.

The last item above can really mess up the FTP client.I've used WSFTP for many years (grin). All appears to be in order there, and some sites I don't use that program at will no longer load. So far just two 3-D chats which I assume must FTP their DATA out - but I don't know that. The problem seems to be inbound FTP.

No bold? Curious about the reason for that? I find it much easier to read, but when in Rome will do what the Romans ask (smiles).

My gut feeling here is something is corrupted or I did something to stop the inputs. Note I am connecting with my server. It's when it goes to send my directory listings back that it fails.I neglected to state that the problem exists with ALL my FTP addresses in WSFTP. Failure of the my server-side directories to LIST.OK. Gotcha. Here are my stock answer for this kind of problem.
1.) Try another user account on your machine.
2. ) try another FTP client
3. )Ask a neighbor to let you use his provider for awhile.

And here is my favorite. Boot up a Linux Live CD. This is a neat quick way to find out there is some kind of strange problem. If Linux can and windows can't, then windows is broke. I am amazed at how the new Linux distros can start in demo mode and get into the internet with no hassle. Okay, I did the next best thing. I got my laptop out of moth balls. (grin) Same problem on it. Conclusion, Hughes Net is screwing up or I screwed up something with them. In any case, it isn't just this machine. Headed for the Hughes Net forum.

Many thanks for the help.Hughes not replying to my ticket and no help on the forum there:(

Here's the relevant lines from WS-FTP attempts:

200 PORT command successful
LIST
425 Unable to build data connection: Connection refused.
!DodDirList failed 0

Does that give anyone a clue as to why I'm not getting incoming FTP?

Thanks in advance for any help.

This may be of some help. It is not a direct answer.

Why is the latency so high?
The way a satellite stays in orbit, without using any type of engine or rocket to correct its orbit, is to gain a balance between gravity and centrifugal force. The closer to earth, the greater the gravity pulling the bird toward earth. The faster it moves, the greater the force pulling it away from the earth. It turns out that there is a spot, about 22,300 miles above the equator, where the speed an object must travel to gain equilibrium against gravity is exactly the same as the speed the earth is turning. By placing a satellite in this spot, its relative position above the earth stays constant. Satellites used for broadband internet and TV must stay in one place in the sky so that you can point your dish in one spot and get the signal. The only other alternative would be to have a constellation of satellites in a lower orbit, that would rise and fall like the sun and stars. There would need to be enough of these flying that there was always one overhead, which requires a lot of satellites, a lot of infrastructure ,and therefore a lot of money.

In the case of a two-way satellite system, when you request something by clicking on a link, or any other way, that message travels 44,600 miles just to get to the NOC. The stuff coming back to you must travel the reverse route, so the round trip is 89,200 miles. The speed of light is 186,000 miles per second in a VACUUM,slower through the atmosphere. But even if you assumed 186,000 mps then the total time taken in space travel is about 480ms. Given the atmosphere problem, it is actually more like 500ms. Add to that the terrestrial internet latency, which should be about 100ms. Also you can add delays through transponders, gateways, proxies, etc.
Software and protocols can reduce the effect of latency for certain applications, but they can't change the physics...the latency remains. For instance, by increasing the number of simultaneous TCP connections, WEB pages can load faster after they get started, but they will always take the same amount of time to get started. Better yet, by replacing the protocol between the NOC and the user from TCP/IP - which doesn't handle high latency well at all - to another protocol designed for long fat pipes, even more could be done to reduce the effects of high latency. No doubt, that is the future of these systems. But still, there will be a delay of somewhere around 625+ms between any interactive activities. The latency of one-way systems is obviously less, with the space travel being cut in half.
I do not presume to know what your level of understanding of  far satellite elite communication. I did just a title of it years ago. IMO, Hugues is not giving you a  snow job. Latency matters.
In other words, some rules that apply to terrestrial communication do not work in satellite communication. And as better technical adjustments are made to the system, a specific issue may become worse, not better. For help with this, you need to get into the Hugues forum and find somebody thee that can help you.
You have to use a FTP client the has been optimized for satellite unlink. Or don't use FTP for transferring files.

How can I say this? Download via satellite is wonderful. The upload is a monster challenge to communications engineers.

Others have reported this kind of issue with satellite services.
http://cowboyfrank.net/webcams/direcway.htm
Just one of many such. Still, many commercial users firm that satellite is the best possible solution to their communication needs. That is also my general observation.
In a nutshell, stop using older FTP clients.
To see for yourself, Google: satellite FTP issues
Here is just one of many.
http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/1595914
Despite the issue, there are solutions. If this is for personal use, you will not like the answers. Commercial users will accept the huger cost of doing uploads  visa satellite, or consider a hybrid solution. (A special DSL for uploads only.)
I do hope this is of some help to you.Give FileZilla a try.....it works good and is free.

other than being a security nightmare, dropbox isn't bad either. My face is sooooooooo red. After the better part of a week or more with no incoming FTP, no answers here, no answers at the Hughes forum, and a hughes rep who couldn't seem to UNDERSTAND the problem, I, as a last resort - which should have been my first resort, got down and unplugged the MODEM for a minute. (Blush). Problem solved. Geeze.... I feel like a complete dolt - maybe I am one.My sincere thanks to all who offered suggestions.

Personally, i don't think anybody will recommend 'tracking' software, firstly, there are probably legal ISSUES, and secondly, this is a domestic issue, not a computer problem! Sorry

Solve : Half installed Windows XP but no GPU or MOBO drivers?

the RECOVERY Drive for Vista is actually still intact as a separate partition I do not have recovery disks.
I'd be very careful not to wipe out that recovery partition.   You should be able to restore the system to its original configuration by HITTING F11 during startup, which should START the recovery partition.

Indeed, I think I'd reinstall Vista from the recovery partition if only to create a restore disc on DVD from the recovery partition.  That's really what computer buyers are supposed to do; that way, they have a recovery disc, on DVD, in case the hard drive MUST be replaced or that recovery partition gets deleted or erased.

Once that's done, i.e. creating the DVD recovery disc, then the Win XP installation could be done again. Quote from: soybean on April 16, 2011, 05:32:11 PM

This is sooooo frustrating! I installed some supposedly helpful gadget to the Mozilla Firefox browser called "Freecorder" and then my compurter is going absurdly slow for the past two weeks. I think it's due to this Freecorder. I tried uninstalling it by selecting "uninstall" from the program's folder on the start menu but IT'S STILL THERE when I OPEN my browser. I tried uninstalling it by "add/remove programs" but it won't go away. I tried selecting the applications menu on Mozilla and removing it but it just won't go away. Please help with this - thanks!Download and run REVO Uninstaller

Solve : Looking for free FTP software?

Answer»

Hi All,
I am looking for a free FTP software program. It has to handle SFTP and be able to be scripted. I was using WinSCP, which I really liked. I was told that I can't use it to work on a new server so I am looking for something close to winscp.

Thanks
Smart FTP...Looks good Patio....except not free....

I like it though....

Used to be...sorry...
Filezilla works pretty well although it may not have all the features you need...

Here's a few others... Quote from: Spoiler on April 15, 2011, 01:32:28 PM

I am looking for a free FTP software program. It has to handle SFTP ...
SFTP simply means secure FTP, right?  So, aren't most FTP programs in that arena?  In other words, if LOGON to the server requires a password and the password can be used in the FTP program, isn't it secure?  Or, does SFTP mean more than that?

Quote from: Spoiler on April 15, 2011, 01:32:28 PM

Meaning automated?

Just curious, what aspect of WinSCP makes it unacceptable at work? CoreFTP Lite:  http://www.coreftp.com/Filezilla is one of the most popular. EFTP is another good one.I like Filezilla, but you will want to patch is as soon as newer versions are available. I learned hard way not to just set it and forget it in the corner when it was hacked by a vulnerability in the version I was running even though I had a complex uncommon passphrase password. It was running for about 2 years without any problems and then it got nailed.

Just like all other software etc its important to stay up with the times and critical patches or version releases. RealVNC is another software that bit me when it was hacked by BlackVNC hacker that didnt require password to remote on in. Fortunately the system that was hit by the VNC vulnerability was just a junk system I was using as a ventrillo server and hosting the guild website with apache. Caught the hacker in there, severed the network connection, rebuilt it from ghost image I made of it to undo the hackers intents, and updated VNC to newer version that didnt have the Black VNC vulnerability. These days I am actually using MS Home Server for secure FTP needs, although its not free.soybean

Yes I mean automated.

End of log

As you can see it can't create a SFTP session. I talked to the guy running the server and he said that WinSCP and another program called Chilkat. NEVER heard of that one. Are not supported.

From what I found the server sends a non standard header in the packet which WinSCP can't handle. So it closes the connection.

Found any viable solutions yet?

Why is SFTP required, as opposed to FTP?  Is regular FTP not secure enough?  I believe most web developers just use FTP.  I guess you have some sensitive data to transfer to the server.  Is that the general situation in this case?
Soybean,
Standard FTP is not secure enough for what I am doing. Its not web work. Think banking.

I am checking out coreftp. The lite version seems to be a close match to what I was doing with WinSCP.

On a side note, the way regular FTP works is to send the user name and password in clear TEXT. After you login the data it also not protected so it is possible to capture it and read it. Using SFTP makes the whole thing encrypted.

I will let everyone know how coreFTP works out for me.

Solve : HP Extended Capabilities 4.7?

Answer»

I have a HP PC with WinXP and HP LJ 3050 All-In-One.

I have searched but can not find out exactly what this software does although it appears that it doesn't do much and I don''t need or use it. It takes up alot of space and I wouod like to unistall it if I can.

What do you SAY? Ok to get rid of it?Well, surely the software is needed for full functionality of your HP LJ 3050 All-In-One.  If you remove it, you won't have full functionality, perhaps EVEN no functionality, from your HP LJ 3050 All-In-One.  I suggest you look elsewhere in your system to resolve hard drive space issues.  If you need help with that, I suggest you start another topic in the forum.THANKS Soybean. I don't think this has ANYTHING to do with my All-In-One. No one answered here or over in the HP forums so I deleted it and All-In-One works fine, at least all of the functions I use work fine. I did find that HP EXTENDED Capabilities 6.1 is nothing but a data gathering tool for HP marketing development. Don't know if that is the same for 4.7. Well, in your original post, you did not say the name of the software, so I could only assume it was the software and drivers that provide full use of printer features via your computer.  But, since you've determined what HP Extended Capabilities 6.1 is and that you don't need it, the problem seems to solved.

Thanks for posting what you found.      Quote from: soybean on April 14, 2011, 11:57:24 AM

I am surprised that no one, including HP seems to know what is in Ext Cap 4.7. Doing Google searches I discovered many who asked same question and no one got an answer.

Solve : Flash Player/Active X problem??

Answer»

On my laptop, I recently got a virus. Literally NOTHING would work properly, but somehow I fixed it using a Malware Bytes and RKILL program. When I got it back up and running, a bubble kept popping up saying I had low disk space. I ran all kinds of Disk Cleanups, removed unused programs, and so on to create space. I was so focused on getting my laptop fixed and creating space that I uninstalled a ton of things, not really caring what they were. I must have uninstalled something important, because Internet Explorer 8 doesn't load certain pages anymore. I don't know if it's a Flash Player problem or what, because Facebook is just a blank page besides the blue NAVIGATION bar, Youtube ads are not showing up as they usually should, and virtual games do not work. I figured this was a shockwave problem since ads and games require Adobe Shockwave, but when I go to install that, I click the "Agree & Download" button and it just REFRESHES the page. I tried an alternative download, which only BROUGHT a pop up that usually says "Run / Save / Cancel", the download pop up, but this time it had a "Find" button instead of "Run". So now I cannot download shockwave or flash player, and on Facebook I tried clearing the cache/cookies/browsing history, and adding an 's' to 'http' in the address bar with no luck. Help??

hmm...

from Paint Shop Pro:

"This is not a valid GIF file"

Same with Animation shop. Opens fine with Windows Image Preview.

Opened in Editpad Pro (best editor evar)...  became clear why. Within the first few characters was PNG.

Renamed the file, opened fine in PSP. it's a PNG file saved as a .gif for no reason. Which FITS the BILL given that there was no reason to attach an image in this thread to begin with.

Solve : DVD MPG4 help?

Answer»

When I put DVDs into the  MP4 format I use a  video bit rate of   1,000 kbps  because  mp4  can keep very good video at low bit rates and it works.

But I just wanted to know what Video Bite Rate does  DVDs use? Quote from: nymph4 on April 15, 2011, 11:45:26 AM

But I just wanted to know what Video Bite Rate does  DVDs use?

Not every DVD uses the same bitrate. DVD-Video discs have a raw bitrate of 11.08 Mbit/s, with a 1.0 Mbit/s overhead, leaving a payload bitrate of 10.08 Mbit/s. Of this, up to 3.36 Mbit/s can be used for subtitles and a maximum of 9.80 Mbit/s can be split amongst audio and video. In the case of multiple angles the data is STORED interleaved, and so there's a bitrate penalty leading to a max bitrate of 8 Mbit/s per angle to COMPENSATE for additional seek time. This LIMIT is not cumulative, so each additional angle can still have up to 8 Mbit/s of bitrate available. Professionally encoded videos average a bitrate of 4-5 Mbit/s with a maximum of 7–8 Mbit/s in high-action scenes. This is typically done to ALLOW greater compatibility amongst players, and to help prevent buffer underruns in the case of dirty or scratched discs. Columbia TriStar Home Entertainment has created a line of DVDs (dubbed "Superbit") aiming to maximize picture quality by eliminating multiple languages, angles, and audio tracks. This allows average bitrates closer to 6 Mbit/s.

Solve : slow starting computer?

I have WINDOWS 7 64 bit system that used to start up fast , now something has happened and it takes LIKE forever for the startup to load,
I have checked for spyware and viruses and what I have found I removed but it still starts up slow does anyone have any hints as to why I am having this PROBLEM, ps I have disabled a lot of programs that start up, and really do not know what else to do, the startup processes I checked I don't understand what they are and am afraid to disable the ones I don't know so any help would be apriciated
thanksOpen msconfig and on the General tab choose "selective startup" (uncheck all three ITEMS) and reboot. Does the problem still occur? If not, start adding items back to msconfig one or two at a time, rebooting after each change, until the problem reappears and you'll have identified the offending process. This is clearly a time consuming process, but it is the best way to determine if some process loading with the system is the cause of your problem.I will try that and let you know what happens, sounds like a good idea, I do have one more question, would having temporary files in the browser cause this too?  I have ie 9 and I checked it out with pc pitstop and it said I had over 11 mb  of temporary files, I deleted them but they keep showing up
so this is what I thought might be causing the problem also. noI want to thank you for your help, I guess I had windows firewall enabled that was dragging me down and some roxio processes , since I already had a norton firewall I didn't need the windows firewall enabled so again thank you very much for your help!

Solve : Reregistration Problems In MS Office?

Answer»

Hi, I just had to put a new motherboard in my PC and when I got it running again and ran an office 2007 product, I got a MESSAGE saying that my hardware had changed and I had to re-register my copy of office. It popped up a screen that had a BUNCH of numbers on it so I selected go online.  WELL I couldn't go online(and never have been able to).  So I dialed the number and got a computer voice that ASKED for my number. I gave it, and was told the account did not exist.  I have not found a WAY to tell someone at microsoft about this.  I have SP3 installed and they make a deal about dropping support for XP SP2 but still will not support mine.  It shouldn't matter anyhow.  I have $330 worth of their software installed and it is nonfunctional and they refuse to do anything about it.  Technically, there has never been any other office product installed on my PC, and I do not have the Activation Assistant in Add/Remove Programs.

Thanks for any help I might get.Microsoft at 1-866-PCSAFETY (1-866-727-2338)

Solve : deleted temp!?

Answer»

hey i deleted my temp files and did disk cleanup (deleted STUFF in recycle BIN XD) now i cant get it back so i decided to also shut down computer because of updates and when i log back in i cant open internet browsers and stuff without running administrator and some of them don't even work, any help would be great ,thank you (i use a home m ade pc with windows 7 64 bit)If you're talking about temporary internet files, deleting them should not cause a problem.  And, cleaning out the Recycle Bin should not cause a problem unless you had something there that needed to be restored.

Shutting down during Windows updates, on the other hand, is a problem.  Why do you think Windows displays a message on screen telling you not to shutdown while it's installing updates?  I'm not sure what to tell about that issue.  Standby for comments from other members.

Solve : Best Voice Recognizion Software?

Answer»

Dear Users
I want to ask that what is the best voice recognition SOFTWARE so that i can speak on it and it can type on MS Word i have found one
Nuance Dragon NaturallySpeaking 11 Premium English
is this softwares is ok or are there any ohers which are better then this
ThankXHello, this is dictation using Dragon naturally speaking version 10. Ihave been using earlier versions of this product are a number of years and use it whenever I need to dictate a long letter or discourse. The accuracy is reasonable, sometimes more acrid than my typing, so I used it because of the need to communicate ideas and use expressions that I cannot readily spill. Sometimes it makes a mistake. For example, in the last sentence I ENDED it with the word spell, but for some reason the dragon fought I said spill. I could have readily made a correction, but I went ahead and just left it there so you can understand some of the difficulties you encounter with this kind of a product.
If you have never used speech recognition before, I would suggest you find somebody with Windows 7 on their computer and try the speech rec ISSUE that is built into the Microsoft product. It is fairly close to the Dragon NaturallySpeaking product. Give it a try and see how you like it before you invest money in the dragon product. My the WAY, in some cases you can find the discounts on the standard version of Dragon NaturallySpeaking. But if you are a doctor or lawyer or an engineer he would pay to get the extra vocabularies available for professional use. I hope this gives you an idea of how voice-recognition works. I was able to dictate this in a fraction of the time that would've taken me to type it. Actually, IBM's Watson is the best voice recognition system on the planet.  It was built by DOZENS of people over five years to compete on Jeopardy.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Watson_%28artificial_intelligence_software%29

BTW, you will need space for 10 racks of servers.  Short of that, you will just need to put up with some of the problems Geek mentioned.

Solve : RECUVA Questions?

Answer» So IVE  just used Recuva, a great program for recovering lost DATA. When i restore my files(mostly pictures) will duplicates of the files that are being restored conflict, and prompt me to choose which one to keep and delete? Or will they just add all the files to where i tell them to go? Is it safe to choose the option "Restore folder Construction" if i am restoring the files to the SAME harddrive where some of the folders that i had deleted used to be, and in some cases Still are? What i want to do is create a NEW folder to restore Everything to. Then go Through that folder and choose what i want and dont want. Do i have that option if i choose "Restore folder construction"? Im thinking that, that term means to make it look the same as before it was deleted, No matter where you put it, right? ...

I am a noob  and im Ok with that.

Please help as soon as possible!!!

Thank you~.
Do the complete restore...
Then create the new folder you want and copy all files to it...
Then do your selective pruning process depending on what you want to keep...
Then backup the folder when done as is to DVD or CD...
Then you can safely remove bothe the original and backup folders if NEEDED... Quote from: patio on February 04, 2011, 01:52:01 PM

So i need to restore the files to the hardrive and THEN take out what i dont want? Do you MEAN to "prune" them out before i restore them? Because before you can restore the files, there is an option to pick and choose what you want. Clarify please. Like patio said you should do a full restore and then go back though to delete the ONES you don't want.

Solve : Java AV Books program, listed in Control panel/programs at 51GB??

Answer»

I noticed a program in the Contro panel/PROGRAMS listed with a Java logo called AV Books, (no publisher listed) at 51 GB. Anybody know what it is?Have you downloaded a program (or an entire book) for digital books\ebooks?

While in the Control Panel\Add-Remove Programs list, did you click on the entry for more information?  Need more details.

You could do a GOOGLE search for "Java AV Books" and probably find more information than you ever wanted.  ROSE,
That's what puzzling. I went online and basically got zip.I tried Java, Sun microsytems, Wikipedia etc. I recently got an e-reader but have only downloaded a couple of books. Reader software wouldn't take up 51GB, would it? I'm showing roughly half of 250 GB HD used. So this would be more than a third of used drive space.Clicking on it just gets Uninstall/ Change program. No info. I have cousins in OK, by the way, formerly Tulsans.
steb (canada)It's an Audio Visual Book Program of some sort. Note the Java icon is probably used simply because it is written in Java and they didn't bother to change it.

Although It's ODD how it takes up so much space. Personally I'd go spelunking to find the Program Files folder that the software is installed in and see what is taking up all that space.  (well, actually, that's not true, I'd probably uninstall it, but it could very well be something you use without knowing it)

Also; sometimes the size LISTING there can get "broken"; I've had corrupted entries state that things like Office were using over 3 Petabytes (which is of course impossible).

Solve : Help with Excel 2007?

Answer»
Is there any way i can find cells of the same value then find the average of the cost.

for example, say Item 1 has been sold 20 times at different prices. Can i find all of item 1 then average them. Does this help you?
http://www.eggheadcafe.com/software/aspnet/30850642/show-average-value-as-a-horizontal-line-in-a-column-chart.aspx
truenorthI not sure what your are trying to do.  Getting the average of a row or column is pretty simple, and I'm sure you know how to do that.  How about a little more detail. Thanks for that.

The way ive tried is to, first name a cell 'item 1' then filter my item LIST, so it just brings up item 1 and average it (next to the 'item 1' cell, then take the filter off. I think this works but i'll have to check it with a calculator before a do the other 9 items.

If anyone can see a fault in this, let me know.

Thanks again. The AVERAGEIF function may be a simpler solution.reddevilggg Have you read my suggestion? I t sounds as if it is EXACTLY what you are trying to do. truenorth Quote from: truenorth on January 29, 2011, 06:41:45 AM
reddevilggg Have you read my suggestion? I t sounds as if it is EXACTLY what you are trying to do. truenorth
truenorth, the link you posted is focused on creating a chart.   reddevilggg is not trying to create a chart.
i have a number of items that have been hired out, so each have different charges for each.

Item 1 , for example, has been hired out a number of times for different lengths of time, so has different charges assigned to it.

I want to find the average revenue from just item 1. If i filter it, then find the average from the filtered view, it still counts all the other items as well.  I can do it manually but i have over 200 ROWS and its hard work PLOWING through it.

Is that any clearer? Quote from: oldun on January 28, 2011, 05:49:23 PM

Solve : Java hates me!?

Answer»

First of all, I want to say thank you to all you wonderful people in these forums that dedicate your talents and time to helping those of us that are less computer SAVVY! I am eternally grateful!

My situation: I had the nasty System Tools malware which I have been working with SuperDave to resolve. However we hit a speed bump with the process because the final scans all require Java.

Well my Java was outdated and possibly infected. It didnt remove all the way so I (under Dave's instructions) used the REVO tool to remove the associated files and was ABLE to successfully download the NEWEST version. (I had to use the offline exe because the online one kept telling me that my internet options weren't right?)

Here's the kicker...When I test my version it says there is an error again . I have confirmed Java is enabled in the settings and that java is enabled in the java control panel and that I cleared the cache as instructed on the Java site to correct the error. I even uninstalled and reinstalled but got the same thing.

I think SuperDave is stumped also(he hasn't yet replied to my last post) and that's why I am asking here. I apologize if I'm out of line for asking about this in another forum but since this is a software issue and not a malware issue I thought I would give Dave a break.

Thanx in advance for your assistance!

Did you try different browser?

Enable java in your web browser -DONE
Enable java thru the java plug in control panel-DONE

But it still won't work.  No I haven't tried a different browser. The machine is my daughters and she is only accustom to IE so I don't really want to put something else on it.

I think you should have mentioned Hotspot Shield is a specialized security tool designed to provide protection for those users connecting to the Internet at public wifi hotspots.  I see no NEED for home users to use it. I have it on my laptop but also on my desktop too, do you believe it is an overkill when I connect the desktop via a local wireless hub? Quote from: Tectonic on February 06, 2011, 02:29:58 PM

Does your "local wireless hub" provide the capability to enable WEP or WPA wireless encryption?  If so, then I'd enable it (WPA is the better of the two) and then I'd definitely view Hotspot shield as unnecessary for Internet access from a desktop system. Thank you for your meaningful feedback Soybean
I will do as you said and remove hotspot from desktop since the hub i access allows for encryption (WPA)

Solve : Unable to play DVDs after Windows reinstalled?

Answer» HI all,

Firstly, apologies if this is in the wrong FORUM! I'm not sure whether this is a problem with my computer itself, or the program in question.

A few months ago I had to have Windows reinstalled on my computer after a virus, and since then I haven't been able to play DVDs on here. I transferred a copy of PowerDVD I had backed up onto my new C:/ drive but when I put a DVD in and open PowerDVD nothing happens. I clicked on the Help button of PowerDVD and it told me 'Unable to load file -- PowerDVD.HLP.'

When I looked into this problem a while ago the Windows Help section said something about needing a DVD decoder. HOWEVER, it seems I am able to play DVDs in Windows Media Player.

So I'm wondering whether this problem is because I don't have a DVD decoder, or because I need to re-install (or BUY a new copy of) PowerDVD properly.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

My computer is a Windows XP, SP3. I've attached a screenshot with further computer spec details.

yeah, its TOTALLY possible that other stuff went missing, but i doubt it. I searched all around and everything seemed to be normal. That doesnt mean that other folders in some way arent being affected. Hopefully not, but its wouldnt be too terrible if anything else got stolen. Its done the damage already. So the defrag was a failure. The harddrive with the missing data did not defrag. All it did was "consolidate" and it only did it for like 5 minutes. My main drive did defrag i think. there was no visual so i dont know if it was actually doing anything. the situation is unchanged. sadly.

Solve : copying problem in Excel?

Answer»

I have been using EXCEL 2000 for years but a copying problem has now cropped up. I copy and paste a set of cells containing comments. It appears to work alright but the mouse symbol turns into a wineglass and I cannot do anything. Sometimes it changes to a cross and I can proceed. A message appears on the left hand bottom of the screen to the effect that I am PASTING comments. It SAYS press ESC to abort. But that does not work. I have to reboot with the loss of my most recent editing to be able to proceed.did you make any changes (hardware or software) to your computer around the time this started happening?  Does this happen with all Excel files?  If you open a NEW Excel file, enter data in a cell and add a comment to that cell, can you copy and paste it to another cell?

You MIGHT try disabling your anti-virus software and see whether that makes any difference.I have not made any changes to the software or hardware. I opened a new Excel file and typed in numbers to a group of cells. I then tried to copy them and I got as far as the dotted lines around the cells and the wineglass symbol. I now cannot get back to either of the workbooks.I believe I have solved the problem. There was an uncorrected circular reference. I have fixed that and the copying now works. That was silly of me. Thank you soybean for your suggestion.

Was sent some word files that are read only and i want to spellcheck them but can't?

How do i enable myself to spell check these documents? I'm using word 2003CantIf the files themselves are read-only, you can do a Save As to a new file (or remove the read-only attribute); if the document is protected, I don't know if you can.

Here's a rather involved method to get around spellcheck being DISABLED in protected documents:

http://word.mvps.org/faqs/macrosvba/SpellcheckProtectDoc.htmOCR software is pretty good these days, so maybe OCR a screen grab, convert to doc and spell check that? Quote from: The Rock on February 01, 2011, 08:26:55 AM

Obviously, you are not the creator of the documents and the creator may have had a reason for making them read-only.  So, why do you want to spellcheck them? I don't think whoever sent them KNEW they were read only. Anyway it doesn't mattter i just wanted to know how to enable the spell check.

Thanks anyway. Quote from: soybean on February 01, 2011, 09:28:36 AM

An excellent point....why ? ?

One of the most common reasons to spell check a document is to check the spelling of said document. Just because the person "protected" the document doesn't mean they are infallible.

Actually I think the entire concept of protecting word documents, excel worksheets, and so forth is completely absurd. The only reasonably common use CASE for such a FEATURE is in corporations to prevent people from editing the documents, and that can be facilitated by simply changing the access control lists of the document file, rather then using the ridiculous "roll your own" implementation that word or excel provide. There are some very specific use cases where it might be useful (such as "applications" written in excel using macros and so forth) but people seem to think "oh, I better protect this document" from what? people changing it Why? Why shouldn't people be able to change it? Why send somebody a document they cannot change? What is the point? the person sending it  has a copy, so unless they delete your copy when they send the file it's POINTLESS for them to protect the document before sending it on.

There are some legal documents that should never be changed, even if there are typos. Quote from: rthompson80819 on February 01, 2011, 02:34:15 PM

That's why they get printed out.

Not always.  Recently I received a PDF legal document for a friend who had a problem receiving it. I printed it out, she signed it and had to fax it back to the law firm so they had her signature on file. There may be a very good reason for not being able to alter the document.
Consider this:
If the document is part if a Writ, and the addressee is asked to sign and return it by faxing or other, then it must be in UNALTERED condition. Correcting, by even changing a misspelled Mailing Address will in fact INVALIDATE the document. A friend who worked for a UK legal company told me that quite far into the 2000s they used to use a dailywheel printer with multipart stationery (multiple layers with a top page and carbonless copies) because of a legal requirement that valid copies of certain documents had to be produced at the same time as the original. They changed to dot matrix eventually.

A dailywheel printer?  Did it just print once a day?  Or do you mean daisywheel.Keep an eye on those printers!!

Not to change the subject but....

In my days as Unit Record Operator, the 1403 Chain Printer was the best on the market.
Cheques were produced on that printer. Believe it or not, but one day one of the hammers got stuck, and a hundred or so cheques were produced with incorrect money in the Amount field. In stead of $999.99 it printed as $9 9.99

Solve : Reinstalled windows 7?

Answer»

I had to reinstall windows 7 on my dell computer.  When I received the computer, Realtec was installed.  Not knowing what to CALL this, but it had a popup window where I could change the invironment, making the sound like it was in a living room, an auditorium, etc.  There was also a large list of sounds to choose from,  jazz, rock, bass, etc.  When I REINSTALLED, using the reinstall DISK that came with the computer, I no longer have this environment.  Any idea how I can get that back?  Unfortunately my dell support expired LAST month.

Thanks,Did you do a clean install of Windows? If so, you should have a driver disk that came with the SYSTEM and you have to reinstall all drivers (install the chipset driver first).

Solve : Safely Remove Hardware?

Answer»

I've been having some problems lately shutting down my external drives safely. Shutting down PC, to safely REMOVE devices GETS to be a pain. I have the drives set in (Device Manager) for Quick Removal ,where I'm told that I can remove the device/s without the Safe Removal Icon. But is this safe?. I also read somewhere that shutting down explorer.exe. is a cure?  Anyway, I'm presently trying an app.(USB Safely Remove) which I hope is, (at least it tells me that it is, and appears to be,) shutting the devices down safely. I'm in the trial period but after that, $$. It's not that expensive but I'm wondering what others are doing in this situation ?.

Thks,Geek. I couldn't help but SMILE when I saw the advice below on Quick Removal. overthehill

"Simply remove your Flash Drive from the USB PORT by gently pulling it toward you."
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The only time it is unsafe to remove a USB drive is if there is unwritten data still being cached (write-caching) or if it is in the process of being written too.

Problem is, that's more theoretical then in practice. USB is supposed to be a hot-pluggable protocol- the drives should be able to be added and removed as easily and safely as floppy disks (you don't have to "safely remove" a floppy disk).

The way most modern OS's handle USB mass storage is terrible, IMO; Most of them call them "removable drives" and yet institute write-caching of those drives as if they were fixed disks that couldn't be removed, not disks that could be removed at a moments notice. The idea is to "increase performance" of those drives, but it's pointless to write data  faster if that data isn't safe. What makes it worse is that the cache policy is terrible as well, in that no matter how long you wait idle, the cache is never emptied- this can be tested since you can write files to a removable drive (with write-caching enabled) and wait several hours before removing it, and the data will still be corrupted. (of course thankfully write-caching is no longer a default) Thing is, that's not a cache- it's a useless buffer. A cache with a bad policy is just another name for a memory leak. Evewn the DOS smartdrv understood this, and even with all write caching options enabled the data was written within a few seconds; and if you wanted to be really sure you could simply run smartdrv /c to clear the cache manually before powering down.\\I think the entire problem with mass storage USB devices is that there is a tendency to "over-optimize", in complete objection to the very concept of a "hot-swappable" drive.

This "over-optimization" is clear, since there are now at least two options you can set for removable flash drives; disabling write-caching, and "optimize for quick removal" thing is, what is the difference? the only one that should cause problems for removal is write caching so is "optimize for quick removal" simply disabling write caching for that drive? And if so, why did they not label it "disable write caching(Optimize for quick removal)" or something similar?

The program in question seems, odd. The windows "safely remove" applet checks if there are open handles, and if so, simply says the drive is in use. otherwise, it dismounts it. if the "USB Safely remove" program allows you to "safely remove" the device while there are still open handles, then it is only fighting half the battle; the only certain thing is that most of the data that was written is still on the drive, and that the filesystem is not corrupted; file data may be lost since it probably forces handles closed that applications are using, which could in and of itself cause other applications to crash. This doesn't even begin to touch on the fact  that it doesn't make simply removing the drive without "warning" any safer, since the applet can't possibly know you will remove the drive. The best it can do is disable write caching, which you can do in windows anyway.

Whenever I remove a drive and the safely remove applet refuses to allow it to be removed, I run handle with the drive root path as an argument in cmd- such as "handle L:\" which will tell me which programs have files open, and I can close the files in those applications with EASE. I'm sure there are GUI tools that could be used as well (Process Explorer could be used here as well). Of course that doesn't address what I feel is the worst problem- and this is hardly specific to windows, - The fact that you even need a "safely remove" option; aside from maybe determining wether the device is safe to remove, there is no purpose for it to exist. How is a flash drive really any different from a Floppy disk? You don't have to "safely remove" floppies, the very idea of doing so is absurd, and yet we accept it with Flash drives, which are, by definition, supposed to be "hot-pluggable".

Thank you, BC
This is one of those times when I agree with every hing you wrote.

Thanks BC_ for the in depth analysis. Lots to digest. What I gather though from the info. that you provided, is in order to remove these devices safely it's still a bit of a hassle. So, rightly or wrongly what I did was purchase the app. that I mentioned above. Now whether this app. does what it's supposed to do or whether it's just a "feel good", I purchased it nevertheless. From the short time that I've used it and from the reviews that I could find, it looks like an OK app. One click seems to do what it is supposed to do. So far anyway .
For less than $15 CDN, (reduced price) I was able to purchase it which includes a life time subscription. I'm thinking that as long as it doesn't harm anything (I'm sure I'll find out) and makes me "feel good", just feeling good for <$15 isn't a bad investment.
So for now anyway, I'll click the solved option.
Thanks and appreciate your expertise once again, overthehill

I then reinstalled excel and word from this new disk.  Since then I can't open my templates.  They want to open in wordpad.  I tried changing the file association but it STILL comes up associated with wordpad.  Any ideas?

Solve : MP 4 help?

I am going to be encodeing a movie into  MP4 there are two settings I have
MPEG 4 Divx     or   H264

I see all this information on the web about  H264  is good for  High quality video.

But what is realy good here out of the two of themSimple answer. Go with H264. Newer, better and  SMALLER.  They say  H264  gives good video quality but  biger files size.

Then some say smaller file size??At the same bitrate both codecs will give files roughly the same size. The difference is that h.264 has better picture quality at lower bitrates.

In my experience, H.264 is better, I always use this. Good luck to you.The Lowest I Bit Rate I can set it to is   256  or  I can pick the word  Default.

Is  256   to Low or will it give  the same picture quality?I've experienced H 264. It has a high qualification picture. I think it's the most interesting for now. What would you say not to go below when I st the Bitrate for my  mp4 AVC  H246 ?

My player can output to HDMi  to watch on TV.

I would want the smallest file size but keep good video picture. Quote from: nymph4 on January 31, 2011, 09:41:59 AM

Why don't you try making video files at different bitrates and see which ones look better?
Well my player has a 5. INCH screen so I can watch my videos on it.

But I can output from my player to  HDMi  TV  but I don't have it yet.

So I am going to make mp4s now and I want to know what would be a Lowest bitrate I can get away with and have it look good when I do  watch it on a  HDMi  TV?

How good is your eyesight? 15 mbps is a good starting point for a 1080p display, I guess. This will result in huge files. Around 20 GB for 2 hours. Some prosumer HD camcorders go to 30 mbps or higher. But if the source is not HD there would be no point, as you would not magically create detail. Ok, I'll CUT the crap and tell you... 5 mbps will not look too bad on a 1080p display. Is that OK?

It outpus to  HDMi  720

I sould have told you this so what would the Lowest Bitrate be I can get away with?

Explain what does happen.

Are you trying to run the programs on the computer hardware that they are intended for?absolutely nothing happens. i click double click the program icon, the cursor turns into that timer thing for a COUPLE seconds, then returns to normal. absolutely nothing happens. ive even tried going into the program files and starting the program from there, still nothing.

and yes, i am using it on the right machine as it is intended to. ive been using the program for a while now, its only recently that it has stopped workingWhat did you change between when the software worked and when you noticed that it no longer worked?PRESUMABLY nothing. i usually dont change my computer settings at all. should i try just uninstalling to program and reinstalling it?YEAH, you could try that and see if it affects a permanent change.  Usually something like this requires changes to have been made - running a system utility, updating software (in)correctly, changing hardware etc.In your original post you SAY "some" and then only mention one program. Is it just that one program with which you are having a problem?

Sorry, but I couldn't disagree more. Norton products gained a bad rep years ago, after Peter Norton sold to Symantec, for producing BLOATWARE and ALLOWING their quality to degrade. In recent years, however, they have produced a fine PRODUCT and do not DESERVE the raps they continue to get.Allan, Yes it may well be possible that their product offerings are vastly improved (and i do hope so). My comments were based on being a user many years ago and experiencing first hand all the problems that were associated with them. It may be a bum rap to be still criticizing them perhaps the O/P can relate to that broader issue as a current user. In the meanwhile i have made a suggestion to deal with the dilemma that is currently being experienced. truenorth  I've had Norton for at least a year, maybe two, furnished free by my ISP (Comcast), and have had no issues or problems with it.

AVI files do not play on a standard DVD player. A good quality AVI file of a hour and half movie is about 800 Meg Byes. So you could put four or file such AVI files on a standard 4700 Mega Byte DVD. But it will play only on a computer.Adding to Geek's....

Broni, I want one of those! Where can I get one?I bought mine online few years ago, because back then, they're rare, but today, you should get them at any electronic store.
I KNOW, "Best Buy" have them.I have seen many DVD movies compress into one DVD disc but have not USED any type of software. The only thing I have noticed is the quality loss on video and a little on the audio side.As i have mentioned on other posts i use a free version of this burning software.
http://www.sothinkmedia.com/
I have through use determined that it does an AUTOMATIC sizing of video files to fit on a 4,7 gb dvd disc. I do NOT know what the maximum size that can be condensed is. I have successfully placed 3 hours of movie video on a single disc so far without any noticeable deterioration of audio/video. The sole drawback to the free version is that you will have a very brief promo of their paid version before the movie starts. I doubt it would do it for 6 hours but i don't know and i also don't know if it did what the quality of the production would be.However for at least 3 hours and less it is very good. truenorth Quote from: jason2074 on January 27, 2011, 10:39:30 PM

Actually I've seen 12 or more hours of dvd movies(about 8 to 12 movies) using just a 4.7 Gb disc. I was surprised seeing how they managed to compress this but I think its against Forum rules.
