Solve : I'm looking for a scheduling or calendar program?

Answer»

Hello All,

Windows 7 no longer has the calendar program. I looking for a scheduling program (hopefully free) to HELP keep track of appointments. I use it to keep track of single occurrence and recurring appointments. I would like to be able to set the appointment to pop up on my computer at boot at least one day ahead of time.

Anyone know of a decent little scheduling of calendar program?

HarryMy wife uses this one a is very happy with it. Hope it meets your requirements and yes it is free

http://www.mywot.com/en/scorecard/wareseeker.comkpac, I note your link to "wareseeker". However while the site may be problematic--and it sure appears so--the actual software is "hallmark event minder' which is contained on the link i provided above. The PROVIDER of the software is the same "Hallmark" company that produces greeting cards among other things. There may be other sites that can provide access to this same software if that is an issue. But as i said earlier she has had absolutely no bad issues with it for many years. truenorth
P.S. If the O/P is fearful of the link via "wareseeker" here is an ALTERNATIVE route to the same software program.

http://www.theabsolute.net/sware/reminder.htmlThanks Folks,

It looks like the Multi-Reminder program will work. Thanks Fed.

I downloaded the Event Minder (from CNet just in case) and it looked good. Its small, quick, and easy, and runs a very small program in the background. But it did not do recurrent reminders as far as I could tell.

Thanks everyone, I THINK I've got what I need.

Um... neither did any other version of windows after 3.1. If you are running win7 32-bit you could try the Windows 3.1 calendar. probably better to use a more updated application, such as those recommended previously.

Solve : Scanning double sided images to one file.?

Answer»

Does anyone know of any scanning software where you can scan double sided documents which then puts the two scanned images into one PDF file?
The only software I can find you have to press stop and start again, so that each forms images save to their own file.

I have a lot of double sided forms to scan and I need the software to automatically save front and back images to one file continously, hopefully without it being really time consuming stopping and starting the programme all the time.

Cheers for any help.We had a office digital copier/scanner that came bundled with an product from Adobe that did this. It allowed for a stack of documents to be passed directly into PDF files double sided. I will dig through Adobe's website and see if I can find the name of the software. This software might be able to run manually on a device that doesnt support double sided to BLEND two scans into a single double sided pdf.http://www.mab.uscourts.gov/pdfdocuments/convert_scan.pdf This shows Abobe Acrobat Pro being used to create double sided pdf, and steps involved.

*Page 3 talks about selecting double sided.Thank you Dave for the info, I will CHECK out the software you recommend.
Alternatively I could save all the documents as Tiff files (smaller file sizes than PDF), but I specifically need every two pages (both sides of the same form) to save into one file automatically every time.  I don't SUPPOSE you ever had to work with anything that saved as Tiff files as well in this way?Swift PDF might be a fairly good solution for you. You might not want to INVEST in new hardware, but if you will be converting 2-sided paper to PDF on a REGULAR basis, consider a self feeding duplex scanner. I have a Fujitsu S300 [similar to S1300].

http://www.fujitsu.com/us/services/computing/peripherals/scanners/scansnap/

There are several other brands available.

It quickly converts all my bank statements and other important papers to PDF and even runs OCR on them to allow search and copy/paste of text. It includes software for inserting and deleting pages from documents. $250 is a lot, but I’m glad I got it.

Unfortunately, it is not TWAIN compatible, so you can't use it with any common scanning software.

Solve : Excel 2007 Problem?

Answer»

Hi All,
I have a spreadsheet that I would like to be able to LIST the DAYS of the month down a column. I then need to put a formula in the next cell that knows to skip the weekends in the date column.

Anyone have an idea as to how to get this done?

Something like this.....

1/1/2011      Skip Sat
1/2/2011      Skip Sun
1/3/2011      SUM etc...
1/4/2011      SUM etc...
etc...

THANKS

I'd like to KNOW more about that SUM etc... in the right hand column. You want the formula to return 0 if the day is a weekend day and sum some range of cells if it's not?

Thanks for the replay.
In a nutshell the SUM stuff adds 2 cells togther that had nothing to do with the date other then to know to show the RESULTS only on weekdays. In other words we had X left from the day before so the SUM cell would start us on the new day with what was left from the day before. We don't work on the weekends so the SUM would have to skip 2 days and show on the following Monday.

I found a quick work around.....

I think that this is a good idea. What do you think?

Thanks

Solve : HELP! .pub files converted to .doc?

Answer»

HELP!!!!!
I was running Pub 98 (I know old!) and had the trial version of MS office 2007 - I always clicked cancel during setup as I did not have the set up key.....
anyway yesterday I noticed that none of my files would open as .pub (where they were originally saved) but they were now all .doc......since I dont have the full version it only lets me view them and do nothing else (print, edit, etc)
I want to GET my .pub files back in publisher 98 NOT Office 2007
I was told to uninstall office as I did but now the saved files are still appearing as .doc but with the notepad icon instead of "w" icon...
If I right click the file to open it with Pub 98 I get an error saying that such and such file is not a valid win32 application!
Should I do a system RESTORE or what ---
please help!
Thanks!
lauraLooks like the modern office converted your publisher files. Only fix now would be to open those publisher docs and  save them in older format for 98. Problem now is you need a fully functional office 2007 to be ABLE to save those files back to Publisher 98. If you know of a friend with a registered copy of Office 2007 or newer, you can use their system to open and save them back to 1998 format as .PUB files instead of .DOC's. (OR) I havent tried this, so it is hypothetical, but you may be able to install Open Office for FREE, then open and save them back to old format. I myself made the upgrade from Office 2000 to Open Office and Open Office is great. I have used it to open and edit old Excel 97, 2000 documents. But I havent used it for Publisher so...that is why this is hypothetical, but may work for you and its FREE! Quote

Solve : Need Excel formula help-Cost Savings Report?

Answer»

I have a workbook sorted by month, and the spend DETAIL. I need a FORMULA for column j  on  sheet 1 (vlook up I believe) that will find (from the spend detail sheet)  the last purchase price of an item within a 12 month PERIOD, searching by the supplier item field. The spreadsheet is attached here. I am in desperate need of help!

[recovering disk space - old attachment deleted by admin]I suspect you're correct about vlookup being the best FUNCTION to use for this but I'm not very familiar with it.

Will you need to search for such data from this file frequently?  If not too frequent, perhaps just using a Filter would work.  Using a Filter allows sorting in many ways.  What version of Excel are you using? This is a monthly report, so a filter is not practical for my purposes.I'm gonna take the easy way out of this and give you the results of a Google search on the vlookup function: HTTP://www.google.com/search?client=opera&rls=en&q=vlookup+excel+2007&sourceid=opera&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&channel=suggest.   I'm sure  you'll find some good references there.

Solve : Unidentified program?

Answer»

I was looking at my control panel-Add/Remove list and I have a program called Xed that's it just Xed It uses 625 MB so It's kind of sizable.  I was wondering if anybody else has this thing?  If so what is it?  What does it do? and most important.  Can i delete it?  I'm partial to having programs that I installed and understand their purpose for being on my COMPUTER.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Might be Xed mp3 converter... Can you locate it on the Program Files first? Look for the XED folder.
When you place the mouse over it there should be some info about where the program CAM from.
It is unlikely that an evil program would be in the add/remove list.

First;  Thank you all for the help.   jason2074  No I cannot find the program file for Xed I also looked in the common files folder and the MS file folders. Hmmmm.

Geek-9pm  I went to the link you suggested and now I really have no clue as to why I have this program.  I have never generated an online document (that I know of) I don't know anything about http's and have never known a DED or whatever.  Is this possible LINKED to another program.  I never play any game online.  the only online typing I do are forums.  Like this one the outline is already fashioned so i don't need a program that ensures that my  format is correct.

I'm just not liking this Xed thing the more I know about it , the less I like it. If it were me, I would create a new folder on my desktop. Then I would find the program and move it to then new folder. If it can not be moved that would mean  it is in use. The search tool will find it if it is there.
Sometimes the Add/Remove list is wrong.I can give it a shot, Let you know what happens! Quote
The search tool will find it if it is there
Used advanced Search(all Files) for the particular file or program. Or you could used MLIN CPL Standalone Exe Version(34 KB) to check for the common or related file that might be running just to be sure.

Solve : WinRAR compression??

Answer»

I compressed a 500mb file in winRAR, maximum compression level, took 5mins, when the bar went to 100 (right that moment the rar size was roughly 103mb) it stayed for a few seconds and the file size dramatically began to increase! All the way back up to 500mb =.=

Before I SPENT 30mins compressing 4 files to find out it literally did nothing =.=

So why does this happen? Help. Compressing one single file won't really lower the file size at all. You'll only see results when compressing multiple files.Well, before when I compressed the 4 files, open the RAR and looked at the compression ratio, the 500mb file (YES I compressed that file with 3 other files initially) was at 0%.

So it SEEMS (I might be wrong) that the file just isn't COMPRESS-ing. Oh, and it's a video. Divx format. Many video formats already are high compression.

As geek says- the file is already compressed. (via DivX, in your case)

Edit: oops, these were supposed to be the same post...Ahhh, so is it possible to decrease the size anymore?
I don't want to compress it in to any other format because of the risk to it's quality.

Cheeers Read the link I gave.
You can do any of these:
1.Reduce the RESOLUTIONS size. Forget HDTV.
2. Change the frame rate, 20fps is passable.
3. Make it shorter, remove boring sequences.
4. Serve your guests abundant drinks and dim the lights.
As the article explains, the compression in video depends on how we humans see things.

Solve : How can I tell if a blank DVD-R disc is bad or corrupted??

Answer»

I BOUGHT a 50 pack of Blank DVD-R discs, i have noticed some are bad or corrupted, when I try to copy things onto it. How can I tell if a blank DVD-R disc is bad or corrupted? Before I try to put things onto it. I hope there is a easy way to tell. Unfortunately NOA blank DISK cannot, by definition, be corrupted.

It can be "bad" but the chances are so rare that that is almost never the cause for failed burns or UDF copies. Usually it's a issue with the SYSTEM itself. What software are you using to copy data onto the discs? Also what is it that you are trying to copy/transfer to the discs that causes it to fail? I gather your process (with the same disc brand DOES work in some instances). Is it possible that the burn is failing because of some fault with that which you are trying to burn? truenorth

Solve : e-mail client?

Answer»

My e-mail is web based with my ISP. On some websites there is a contact button that would open outlook express on my old computer so I could contact them. This computer is Win 7 & when I click contact I get a pop up saying e-mail client is not installed. Is there a client I can download that will work on IE 8 & still let me use my ISP web mail? Yes, it's Windows Live Mail.  You need to download Windows Live Essentials, which consists of Mail and numerous other components.  You do not need to install all the components if they are not wanted; you'll have the option to select which ONES you want to install after starting the installation. Depending on how your ISP has mail setup Thunderbird may also be an option for you...

From the fine people who bring us FireFox.Thanks for the SUGGESTION's. I'm downloading Live Essentials now but it appears to be a large file so it will take a while on dial up. Can Live Mail be set to leave emails where they are & not import it all? The HELP center doesn't address this. What is an RSS feed? There are instructions to add an RSS feed as well but I have no idea what that means or what its used for. I use the web mail provided at peoplepc (dial up isp) so I hope it will work with this.Oh, I'm getting a different picture here now.  You were only using OE when you clicked on an email link on a website and OE opened.  But, you normally accessed your mail via your web browser, i.e., as webmail, right?

Yes, you could use WLM that way, just as you did OE.  But, as you know now, the full Windows Live Essentials is a large download.  If you merely want an email client installed that will open when you click on an email link on a website, I'm inclined to think installing Thunderbird, as patio mentioned, might be a better option for you.  The download would only be the Thunderbird email software and, therefore, would be a much smaller download. an RSS feed is a XML file that sits in a predefined location; on it's own, it's not really all that useful. however, When you "subscribe" to an RSS feed, you are telling your browser (or feed reader, or, whatever software gave you the option) "hey, I want to know when something new is added here" and then every time you start the browser and at a set interval thereafter (usually 30 minutes to an hour) the browser will download that XML file and see if there are any new items. It can then either say "hey, there's some new stuff to read here!" or, do something different. Firefox, for example, supports a feature called "Live bookmarks" which basically let's you subscribe to an RSS feed and have that "bookmark" display a popup menu that contains the last 20 or so items in the feed.

TL;DR version: think of it as a stock ticker for web pages.I've used thunderbird before and it takes some getting used to if you're an outlook PERSON.  I've used outlook for like 10 years or so, then tried to convert to Thunderbird and it was a little tough at first

Solve : text help?

Answer»

I use  Abi Word 2.8  for all  word and text  DOC  work and it lets you save in all diferant formats.

Two formats I think are the same but I don't understand the diferance is

.txt   and   Encoded txt

When I save something in    .txt   it will open in NOTEPAD I get it it is a  text bass file.

But when I go to save the same file in    Encoded txt  it still opens in notepad and I get this.

What I don't get is when I save as  Encoded txt  like I say it brings up a window that asks me how I want to encode.
US  ASCii
Urapean  ASCii
Windows  txt

And a lot of others I never seen before.

A  text file has no  formating at all I get it.   So my gess is all this just is for how many Bits it will encode it as or something like this.

Can someone tell me what I am not getting? Quote from: nymph4 on January 04, 2011, 04:23:38 PM

A  text file has no  formating at all I get it.
of course it has a format. ASCII is a standardized format to represent SYMBOLS using bytes. It has several variations. Unicode is another format to represent symbols using bytes. A text file can be either.

Could you please start using the SPELL check. All your posts take me a while a decipher.
Not an answer, just some advice. Thanks but say I pick to save as   Encoded txt
then this is when I get a list of saving options like
US  ascii
Standard  ascii

and so on.

But if I just save as  txt   and not  Encoded  txt   I get no saving options.

Why this is what I ment?
Quote from: nymph4 on January 05, 2011, 09:47:24 AM

I dont understand what you want to know?

If you save as .txt .......then it saves as .txt..............if you save as encoded txt.........then it gives you options to encode it.

Is that right?yes this is right.

So if I get what you are telling me then if I have a lot of Symboles and things like this in my text file. And I go to save it as just  txt  it will not save all the Symboles.

But if I save as  Encoed txt  it will  am I right?
Open notepad

Put some symbols in and save it.

Close the file

Open it again

Are the symbols there? Quote

Most likely, you really have no NEED to use any of those Encoded options.  I believe the formats most users would be using are .doc, .txt, and .rtf.  I presume your question is an academic one; in other words, you're just asking more out of curiosity than a real need to know the distinct characteristics of the Encoded options.  Am I right? I typed some symboles and saved it and opened it and they were still they. Quote from: nymph4 on January 05, 2011, 03:53:17 PM
I typed some symboles and saved it and opened it and they were still they.

Is that the answer your after? No

If I make two files with  Text and Markings and so on and save one as  .txt  and the other as  Encoded txt

They both open in Notepad  I get it they are both txt files.

But why would I say save something in  Encoded txt   and then  the   encodeing window  opens and I pick  US  ascii

What is all this doing that plane  txt   is not?http://htmlpurifier.org/docs/enduser-utf8.html

The device is plug and play, so it shouldn't 'do' anything. Are you connected to the internet?according to instructions when you plug in for first time it downloads program, when I inserted it it showed up and then disapears, ive checked computer and there are no programs for broadband2go.Also Im able to get on internet going through my cisco router.Broadband2go just doesnt seem to want to download.I even went to their WEBSITE and DOWNLOADED the program and tried to install that way.Seems to me for some reason laptop blocks it from downloading.
Does the USB port work with other devices?yes all three usb ports work with other hardware,I tried all of them.
Did you but it new! If so, you need to take it back and get it replaced!

If your USB ports are working then it points to the device. As you can see from the links, this should be plug and play!

Solve : monitoring one application resources?

Answer»

I have a question about my problem with monitoring usage of specific program - in my case VirtualBox,
VMware workstation and Microsoft Virtual PC. I want to monitor how much of computer RESOURCES is application using during
some work in virtual computer - guest. I need that to work on my host Windows 7. I need a graphic line view of usage and text. Problem is that
task manager is showing just total usage of all processes, in resource monitor you can select which process you want to monitor but it only shows for
60 second and doesn't have option of saving graph or text log files. The only one that i found was AnVir task manager but it's showing some weird
numbers and graphs if you compare to resource monitor. Performance monitor in windows has options of selecting what to monitor, it's not my
favourite CHOICE, but you can't select just to monitor one application only full computer statistic. My question to you is how to monitor just
one application resources (CPU,RAM and disk usage - read/write) in windows performance monitor or how to monitor that in any other program?

This one does a lot more than you have asked for but appears to do what you want as a part of it. (and it's free)
http://dottech.org/freeware-reviews/7015
Others may offer additional suggestions, truenorthProcess Explorer

right-click on a process, choose properties, and then you can use the "Performance Graph" tab to get information that pertains to only that process.

Process Monitor Is another tool, which is rather advanced but depending on what you are trying to do may be useful.Process Tamer is showing just cpu usage without ram and disk activities and does't have graphs of usage. I've tried Process Monitor and explorer before. Process explorer is good but it can't save the graph like Performance monitor in Win 7. I can MAKE a prin't screen but refresh rate is too high to catch activity of one hour or more. And it can't save usage in text. Maybe it would be better if I use some program that can make a log FILE of usage of cpu, ram and disk activity (in selectable refresh rate, maybe minimum of 1 sec) and then export that as excel file or SOMETHING similar (where I can make graphs out of numbers) so I can have exact view on usage of every second and then i can compare to other statistic. I actually have to compare statistic of usage VirtualBox , Vmware and Virtual PC while they operating. With program that could give me exact statistic in every second  I could compare which is using more system resources while doing some operations. Anyone have an idea what program could that be?

Solve : problem with .mdb file?

Answer»

Hi there,

I have been sent two .mdb files as attachments. The first one is 1156K and OPENS without any problem in Microsoft Access. The second one is 124K, and will not open with Access. It appears in the Access sidebar as a .dbf and when I click on it I get a message saying that the filename is an invalid path. I have described this problem to the person who sent me the file, and he has resent it. However,  the same thing is STILL happening. The sender has told me that the document is "linked to an old Borland Database that is not longer in use".

I'd be grateful if someone could suggest how I MIGHT be able to open the document, or if opening it is even a possibility. I have no previous experience with sending or receiving database attachments. I've asked a couple of colleagues about the issue though, and they have been unable to help.

Thanks in advance!

Stephen  I can't guarantee this will work but I'm suggesting you try OpenOffice.org; it has a database module which simply called Base.  See http://www.openoffice.org/product/base.html.  To use it, i you'll need to download (see http://download.openoffice.org/index.html) and install the full OpenOffice.org office suite. If you do NOT wish to add the "open Office" software to your computer just to view this file perhaps another way of the sender sending it to you would achieve the objective. I do not know what kind of DATA is within this file. But let's say it is either print or picture (or both) and all you want to do is view it as opposed to working with it. Then have your sender do a screen capture with the file open on his computer and then send that to you. It will come to you in a different file format than that which is giving you trouble. Hope this helps, truenorth Quote from: truenorth on January 03, 2011, 08:28:17 AM

Eh, that's highly unlikely to work well in this case since the "data" is neither "print or picture", it's data in a database.  Database software is designed to sort data is many ways, extract reports, etc.  The entire functionality of a database would be lost by a screen print.  soybean, yes of course - i believe i alluded to that as a loss factor of the suggestion. But if the only requirement was to "view" rather than "work with" then i believed it would have allowed that. Only the O/P can answer whether it would have sufficed their need or not. Perhaps it would not. truenortthYes, to "view" rather than "work with", your suggestion might be workable.  However, if the database has thousands of records in it, this technique would require numerous screen captures and then the recipient would have to try to piece them together.  The larger the number of records in the database, the more cumbersome this would become.  But, for a small number of records and to only view those records, the screen capture technique might suffice.

Another idea came to mind.  Most, if not all, database software has some export capability. If the sender has the software used to create that database file, I would ask them to export to a text file or CSV (Comma Separated Value) file and send that file.  It could then be imported into OfficeOffice Base or Microsoft Access.  It could also be imported into a spreadsheet (Excel or OpenOffice Calc).Wouldn't it be nice if the O/P would come back and enlighten us some more as to the requirements. I made the screen capture suggestion on the basis of the relatively small size of the one that they could not open . But certainly as you state the sender undoubtedly has more control as to methods of creation now that the sender undoubtedly knows the situation at the receiving end. It is so frustrating that POSTS are generated/suggestions are made/ and we never hear back from the O/P.truenorth Quote
The sender has told me that the document is "linked to an old Borland Database that is not longer in use".

The dbf file is not "linked" to a old borland database  that is no longer in use.

it is a borland database.

Access cannot open a DBASE (dbf) database, it can only  "link" to them. Chances are the larger database either has a table that is linked to the DBF, or it used to have a table that linked into the DBF (but as the sender stated is "no longer in use").

if you really really want to open the file, you might have some success with this:

http://office.microsoft.com/en-gb/access-help/creating-an-access-database-from-a-dbase-file-HA001054649.aspx

The above requires that you have a "BDE" installed (Borland Database engine) Don't ask me what that means, I'm not really sure. I imagine it's a ODBC data source. Another way is to use the File->Get External Data->Import command to Import the database.

Either way, I suspect the file itself is either already linked in with the access database, or is merely a vestigial remnant from a time that it was linked to the access database.

Hi Guys

Thanks for all your help. I apologise for the delay in getting back to you, but all your suggestions are much appreciated.

I had previously tried to open the file with Open Office, but that didn't seem to work. The screen capture idea might be good enough, as I think just seeing the data should be sufficient. I'm going to suggest the idea to the sender to see if it's workable from his point of view.

I'm to have a look at BC_Programmer's link now to see if that works.

Thanks again

Solve : PC Jukebox software?

Answer»

Does anyone know of software to allow my very large music library (mp3) to be used by people at a party without danger to the files?  Googling 'Jukebox' GENERALLY just brings up media players but that is not what I want.  I want people to be able to browse the library and queue up tracks, but without being able to access the store directory which usually results in things being messed around, deleted etc.  In other words, just like an ordinary jukebox.

Is there such an application?  And if not, *censored*, why not?

Regards to allIf i understand your issue correctly what you basically want to do is called "file sharing". However like a peer to peer file sharing program you want it to be generally available to the "public" as opposed to specific PERMITTED users. Is that correct? As with peer to peer file sharing while access to the files exists the person accessing it cannot alter the file at your point of origin. Correct? Apart from the concern of the copyright issue of the music files (which CH members cannot become involved in) could you be more specific as to who you see accessing these files. There are on-line storage sites that can be accessed by other people under a permission basis that might allow you to achieve your objective. That would require that you make your music files available there. You mention "store". What is meant by that? truenorthHave you looked at this site.

http://wiki.arcadecontrols.com/wiki/Jukebox_Software

I haven't actually used any of the programs, but it seems like what you are looking for.

Another approach would be to use a mp3 player plugged into a stereo.  Then if someone messed up some files you could just reload the player from your computer. No truenorth I don't want to share, I can do that - although this site seems DETERMINED to list me as a BEGINNER I am in fact an EXPERIENCED user who used to run a 40-PC network.  What I want is just to be able to leave my laptop connected to a speaker system so people can browse and select, but without the danger that they will start rummaging through the computer at random.  My wife and mother (to name but two) whilst I love them very much, are capable of doing an enormous amount of damage in a very short time, in complete innocence.
I suppose I can stream via my digital radio but that has a complicated interface and a screen and mouse would be a lot easier.

To rthompson thanks, I will have a look nowAH HA! i do believe it is becoming clearer as to your desire. You would like to make a Folder/file with "music" within it. Music you have already on your computer. However i suppose that you might not want "all" of it accessible. But whatever you do make available insofar as that computer is concerned it is ONLY that that can be accessed as opposed to all of the whatever else  programs/folders/files that also reside on the computer. So what you want is someway of allowing access to that exclusively but nothing else. How about creating a "guest" account universally accessible and password protecting access to any other accounts you have? Now here is where i go in over my knowledge head but given your own knowledge from your past experience you may know if this can be accomplished via that route. Can you only have the guest access the music folder and nothing else other than the obvious need for an audio player? Hopefully this might lead you to a thought that helps you with your needs. truenorth
P.S. If i am not mistaken that "beginner" status is a variable that the member has the ability to change as also you can chose to include an O/S if you chose. Plus you can add other enlargement parameters as to what that experience level reflects in your personal case. The parameter that you cannot change is the "newbie" in your case. That only reflects the level you are at in terms of your posts on the CH forums. It is not however a reliable depiction of a members competency. Somewhat like age which may or may not reflect wisdom and knowledge. Not free:

http://www.silverjuke.net/en/

This might work as well:
http://lifehacker.com/333550/put-windows-media-player-in-party-mode

Apparently there are some plugins for Winamp being developed for "Jukebox" mode, which would allow people to add things to the playlist but not modify the playing track (by going forward or backward for example). Not sure if that's exactly what you're after.

There is another method, where you could create an alternate account and then set the User shell for that account to the music player application (no start menu). Of course Control+Shift+Escape would show the task manager and the various other key combinations could be used to get "control" but it might work as a sort of damage control from novice users.

Thank you very much.  I have tried various of the freeware apps over the holiday and the best you can say of them is that they are not actually permanently harmful!  Absolutely awful, but thanks for the suggestion.

Your various suggestions about new accounts are good but the suggestion of Silverjuke is the one!  Yes I have to pay for it but it took about three seconds of using the trial version for me to fire up PayPal.  It's great when you find a pieve of software that does just what you want AND feels like quality from the word go.

Thanks again.  Happy New Year

I added all sort of registrys and uninstalled many programs.

This may be why it no longer works...hmm.. might be. But the registries were given by the makers of the game, and no one really had problem like mine. Ok lets say its the registries fault. How can I fix it I am gonna try reinstalling javaHmm didnt work. Still.. I am trying to register jscript.dll whole day but it doesnt work. It says "The module "jscript.dll" was loaded but the call to DllRegisterServer failed with error code 0x80004005. I tried by clicking run as ADMINISTRATOR but it gives me the same problem.
I found out that i need to register that dll when trying to install Adobe After Effect CS 4. (I had it before but it needed a reinstall). Please help x(
P.S. I was trying to add the dl by changing the path in cmd to system32 than TYPING regsvr32 jscript.dll and also by changing the path to syswow64 and than typing again regsvr32 jscript.dll. elevated? Explain :?run cmd.exe as an administrator.

And, no, you didn't do that before, because if you do you start in %systemroot% and won't have to change the directory.

once you're in there try running regsvr32 in system32 as WELL as in syswow64.OK I went in System32 and found cmd.exe . Right CLICK > run as administrator and typed in regsvr32 jscript.dll . I got the same error again. Same in Syswow64 Well no one could really help me and I got pretty desperate. I am trying this right now..
You may need to reset the registry permissions in Windows XP if Services Pack 3 fails to load and give an error Access Denied. In Vista the trouble is with Service Pack 1.

Download the SubInACL.msi from Microsoft and install it .

its a bit tricky. you have to install subinacl as an admin.

i installed it to program files. it also installed in x86 (installed twice). i made sure all 4 files were in both folders (reset.cmd, subinacl.exe, subinacl.htm, and tooldownloadreadme.htm) after the install.

then run the reset.cmd in an elevated command prompt from the folder (program files not the x86)

save the code below as reset.cmd

subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE /grant=administrators=f
subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CURRENT_USER /grant=administrators=f
subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT /grant=administrators=f
subinacl /subdirectories %SystemDrive% /grant=administrators=f
subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE /grant=system=f
subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CURRENT_USER /grant=system=f
subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT /grant=system=f
subinacl /subdirectories %SystemDrive% /grant=system=f

Run the script it may take a few seconds to run it will count percentage done.

Restart the PC then re-run the Service Pack it will work fine.I see nothing but registry subterfuge going on here...
What tool do you use to backup the registry before mucking around in there ? ?
Just curious. If you're referring to the subinacl tool it's a very powerful, useful utility. I've used it and recommended it any number of times. But it needs to be used with care as it can also lock you out of your system if the script changes aren't exact.Idk.. I was ready to try anything. Didnt know what exactly that thing will do to my computer actually. Pretty stupid and desperate reaction. Well.. this kind of solved the problem. Messed up my computer so now I gotta reinstall windows lol. I hope I dont mess my computer again after rainstall.
More info:
I didnt wait for the thing to finish.. I just closed it because it took too much time. Not I cant really run anything.. it says that there is not enough free memory *censored*?! lol. Even explorer.exe says that. Altho some programs like photoshop work, really strange. All drivers are.. wiped. At least I can store my memory before reinstall ;d
Bye for now guys, and dont start things without knowing exactly what they do like I did.

Solve : Strange back-skip problem?

Answer»

I'm not quite sure as to which forum this problem belongs with, but I guess I'll start here.  I have 3 computers that all have the same problem.  The 2 years old Lenovo laptop constantly skips backwards to a line above or even 2-3 lines above when I am typing.  The year old Asus does it occasionally and the brand new Acer that I just BOUGHT for my son for Christmas was doing it when I was SETTING up various software programs and registering them.  I would type in a user NAME, TAB to the password line, start typing the password and the next thing I know the curser has popped back up to the previous line and is ADDING on to the user name. Prior to these three computers, I'd never had a computer do that and I've had a few since 1994. Has anyone else had this problem and if so, is there a "fix"?  Thank you3 different computers--same printer? How are they connected to the printer(s)? truenorthI don't think the printer is involved.

Is this the only problem on the systems? My first thought was malware, but the fact that it happens on 3 systems is very odd.Only one computer (Asus desktop) is hooked up to the printer.  The Lenovo laptop does the back-skip no matter where I use it.  It will go along for a few sentences and then it pops back up a few lines.  I don't know if the Acer does it other than when I am filling out forms for on line registrations as I haven't used the word processing program yet.  I've been typing for 50 years and never had this problem.  At first I thought it was something peculiar to the Lenovo, then a few times it has happened with the Asus, mostly if I haven't given it a chance to load up to sign in on Yahoo, but, when it started happening with this brand new one, I began to get a little concerned.  Thanks for your input.Well, you might want to scan for malware as a start. Do a full scan on one of the systems with BOTH your anti virus utility AND with MalwareBytesI run both Norton Antivirus and Malwarebytes regularly and make sure they are updated constantly.  Those programs are on all three computers.  I also run Defraggler about once a month, & Ccleaner.     Perplexing problem!  Thank you for your suggestion.

I was wondering if anyone oth there uses this version of the software and COULD give any advice or tips as to how to get the best results out of it. Alternatively could anyone recommend an alternative with SIMILAR features and at a similar price level (ie a directly COMPARABLE product) that i could try out?

If anyone has any ideas about what might be causing the crashes or a fix, or even a WEBSITE i can go to, to just use webcams, then i would really appreicate it as it sucks being in a new country and LOOSING that contact to home i had (except emails obv)

Solve : Scanner can't be removed from computer?

Answer»

My computer has a scanner installed in the control panel that I do not have or ever did.
It shows Xerox workcentre pro scanner.  It is primary to the extent that after doing a long fix
from Canon for my all-in-one, it kicks it out after a few days and have to do the fix again.
I cannot remove this Xerox item and I am no computer novice.  Xerox has not responded
to my request for help.  Canon says they can go no further then what they have, which I think
has always been outstanding tech support for free. Quote from: Charlie361 on JULY 26, 2010, 11:31:42 AM

Exactly how did you try to remove it?  Is a program for it shown on your Programs menu?  Is is listed in your Add or Remove Programs list (in Control Panel)? It is in the control panel under scanners  and nothing will remove it so far.Opps.   It is not in the add or remove listings ,  but the canon is .    Quote from: soybean on July 26, 2010, 11:36:58 AM

My canon cannot be moved or removed either and nothing that has been PLACED in scanners apparently can ever be moved or replace.  Xerox shows no where else any where on the computer... Quote from: soybean on July 26, 2010, 11:36:58 AM

Still not answered.     Are using an ax, shop vac, leaf blower, micro-bulldozer to shove it off the screen, or what?THANKS for help in this and I have gone to remove all I can and reinstall my canon.  Should it happen again I will type up in detail exactly what I did to fix it and put that on this site.

Easyier right now then trying to remember all I have or have not done.

Good on you for HELPING folks like me.

Bye..

I like Soybeans approach and Humor.....   BTW Welcome Aboard and keep us posted Charlie... !The dirty  Xerox scanner is still there and had to reinstall CANNON driver again to get it to work until the next time Xerox kicks it out.  I do remember once seeing some oriental characters wheile messing around trying to get rid of it.  Maybe I was on a Chicom controlled site once and they have a powerfull bug in my computer that cannot be removed and don't know why they would do it.  Could they know I was CIA in my career?  I do some heavy e-mailing with folks formerly in the Intelligency community.
This all sounds like a hoax by me,  but all very real unfortunately....

Solve : BIOS password 4gotten, WHAT NEXT??

My sister 4got her BIOS password, her OS is corrupt n it needs to be fixed but without the password, there is no access to the BIOS setup. how can i get this resolved for her?
I've got few options but 2 heads is better than 1...

OPT 1: call up the manufacturers to retrieve d password but its already stated on their site that if the BIOS password is lost,  its not their obligation.

Opt 2: remove the CMOS battery for 10sec n put it bk in... not quite sure if its gonna work

Opt 3: sell d laptop as scrap!

MEED HELP PLSSSSIf it isn't the kids, it's another relative... call up the manufacturer and ask what the options are considering you have original purchase documentation and proof of ownership. You do have these?

Yes you should. Take the battery out for five minutes and put it back in. It should work. In other words, do option 2.Most LAPTOPS store the BIOS password in a special chip, SOMETIMES even hidden under the CPU, that is not affected when the rest of the BIOS settings are reset. This makes the removal of a BIOS password on a laptop almost impossible.Take the machine to an Authorised Repair facility...be prepared to show Proof of Ownership...
Good Luck.even repair shops are directin me to the manufacturers website to search for a solution.
i think the CMOS is the only PROCEDURE 2 reckon wiv 4 now n if not... sell for scrap!

Solve : OUtlook Express prompts for logon doesn't accept it, though?

Answer»

I use XP service pack 3 and am having trouble with my outlook express.  When I click send and receive and want to send or receive from my pop3 program, which is gmail, I get a prompt for a logon, including user name and password.

There is already one written in there.  But when I click enter it just goes and comes back again.

I just came back from a 40 day trip where I was using my laptop. I didn't have this problem before.  When I came back, I had this problem, and also I couldn't access my gmail account on my PC either.  So I changed my password on my gmail account and now I can access this on the web. And, I changed the password for my gmail account in my Outlook express as well, but I'm still not able to send or receive from my pop3 (gmail) program from OE as before.

Can you please help as I use this account for my online teaching and need to have all my letters in my OE where I can read them OFFLINE as well.

Thank you.
Dr.DWell, I suggest you try simply double-checking the password in OE.  Of course, make sure your CAPS Lock is not on unless you intended to use CAPS.

What error MESSAGE do you get when trying to send/receive with OE?

I suggest you review all settings in your gmail email account in OE.  Do you know where to find that info on GOOGLE's website?  Also, logon to gmail VIA your web browser and verify that POP mail is still enabled there.  Based on what you've said, it seems POSSIBLE someone gotten your previous password, accessed your email account, and may have changed some online settings.

Solve : Almost 50% memory usage non-stop?

Answer»

Hi guys! Ive noticed that My memory usage doesnt go down from 1.6 GB out of 4 GB even with no applications running.
Physical Memory
Total: 4095
Cached: 2247
Available: 2451
Free: 255
Compared to my 3% CPU usage this looks really bad ;d I closed the sidebar, bitcomet, skype, browser and most processes that use over 10 000 K of memory but it goes down only to 1.3 GB. Is this normal? My OS is Windows 7 Ultimate.
P.S. I have only one account on this computer.Your talking about Microsoft Windows and your wondering why it's goobled your memory?

It will start off and use about 1GB of cached memory and have a 4GB paging file on your Hard Drive, depending on how much system memory you have (calculated on default settings for 4GB). More RAM you have, the more it ironicy uses in virtual memory (by default).

All the DLLs and stuff your opened in the past, gets stored in cache (to hopefully open faster next time) up to that limit. Normally it's system managed. It's not recommended you disable this feature unless your got a lot of memory otherwise Windows will run like a dog.

It's pretty normal, be glad you have Windows 7 Ultimate - it's one of the slightly less hungry ones.

For the Paging File, check:
Control Panel > System > Advance System Settings >
Advanced > Performance 'Settings' > Advanced > Virtual Memory 'Change'

Wow, three times it says 'Advance', must be something really advance! Not really, messing around with it however can make or bring the core Windows performance. They just don't want you to.

Your computer at idle (even with virus scanner in the background) should be around 0% processing / 25% physical memory (1GB out of 4GB). Depending on background services and programs running this will go up. The 3% CPU usage if continous is more alarming, but this could be your virus scanner?

Under Start > All Programs > Startup, check for any unneeded startups and remove them (only if you know). It is better to have things that you sometimes use under the taskbar or sidebar as shortcuts to quick launch when you need them, rather than having them start up each time you turn on the computer.

Start > Run > 'msconfig' (without the quotes) and check the Startup tab there too.

You can run 'services.msc' and stop half of those useless background services (but be careful and know what ones you don't want). This would cut down on the system use and also make the computer more secure in some cases. Disable something wrong however can prevent the OS or an application from running correctly.
http://www.blackviper.com/Windows_7/servicecfg.htm

ps. Bitcomet is P2P torrent network, aka a 'peer leecher' trojan, that would be using up the system and bandwidth mostly. It uploads 2/3 more than download and lies about it stats. Use at your own risk.Hey thanks a lot for the info! I guess I dont have much to worry about the usage of my memory. Btw Ive been using BitComet since.. since I started messing with torrents . Ive tried uTorrent but its interface is kind of ugly for me. I also tried Azerus, that was too heavy for my last computer and I dont want to bring this one down to its knees too. What torrent client are you using? I don't use torrents anymore, way too slow... when I can get Megabit speeds else where with no upload bandwidth leeching.

I've used and hated torrent clients in the past, some better than others but all most are rubbish. Plus the downloads have a 50/50 chances of being infected. The other computer(s) sharing could be unaware it's files are infected, or people like to FAKE files and inject trojans to share, etc. Make sure you pick safe sources.

My friend use to use Azerus with a so-called addon 'speed boost' pack, soon found out it was sharing his entire computer rather than just the selected share folder and leeching off some important docs, lol.

You can easy create your very own to simply leech and use other computers in a VB program... knowing, trying that, SEEING the security holes to easily access and leech anything, I stopped using P2P.Let me explain this as simply as possible: Free memory is wasted memory. Windows manages memory very well. Unless you are experiencing some problem, stop looking at memory usage. On top of the gobbleydeygook posted above...As Allan said...
Vista and 7 handle RAM in very different way, than previous Windows versions.

Quote

You described it rather inaccurately. And then you give instructions on changing the very things that are best left unchanged. They never asked about Virtual Memory, but the tangent you went on about it caused you to describe how to change their settings as well as provide a inaccurate synopsis on how it works.

Quote

Allan and Broni provided far more relevant help, and their posts didn't fall into the category of failed "Look how smart I am" posts.

er... Windows Vista may have a different approach to memory management (screwing it up), but then Windows 7 radically changes that again (fixing it slightly).

In Windows Vista, the more application windows you had open, the more memory required. Every window accounts for two memory allocations – one in video memory and one in system memory – which hold identical content.

Windows 7 changes this by getting rid of the system memory copy entirely, which effectively cuts the memory consumed in half.

The SuperFetch feature in Windows 7 differs significantly in approach and cache usage from its counterpart in Vista. Under Vista, the caching of applications starts immediately at launch. By that point, Vista’s SuperFetch has allocated more than 1.5GB.

In Windows 7, SuperFetch delays till needed and a little more than 600MB has been allocated vs the 1.5GB of Vista. Even without SuperFetch turned on, Windows 7 makes fewer demands on cache.

Just saying...
Quote
Windows manages memory very well.

and to stop looking at memory usage, isn't much help. It's ignoring the question. Nor is posting something about how Vista is a memory hog. We already know that, this however is Win 7 and shouldn't be as bad.

Giving advice on reducing the footprint, yes can be scary and danagerous for some, however I did give warning and gave the knowledge to clean up anything which might of been hogging the memory. Tweaking = more memory and system resources, meaning better performance in applications and games.

(the differences is I don't treat people as noobs or throw out the question as being silly, I see my computer doing something weird, running slower, or using more resources, I'll like to find out why and tweak or fix it, sorry if that's an issue)

As for how smart I am, I also know 1+1=2?!!?!! I really want to show off huh by being anonymous and answering questions, trying to explain why and offering advice, trying to help random people? Can you tell me the point in that? You still clearly still have no idea why I'm here. Nor am i perfect, if it's inaccurate or not clear, feel free to correct.Ok.. the truth is that I tried to play GTA IV at max graphics and everything, but it said I only got like 2000mb to use for it. Than I opened the task manager to see whats wrong, I mean I know I have somewhere around 4000mb. I saw that 1/2 of my memory is being used non stop and posted a topic here, hoping that there is a way to reduce it to minumum and play at maximum graphics and stuff ^_^. Thats all GTA IV DRAWS a lot on the graphic card memory first before using system memory and locks increasing or maxing the grahics if there isn't enough. There are tweaks available, but the best option however is a new graphic card with a lot of onboard memory, if you really want to max it out with smooth LAG free performance max graphics.

Download the latest graphic card drivers, specially if using a nVidia graphic card (that has a performance tweak increasing builtin specially for this game).

Upgrade GTA 4 with all the latest patchs, this game is released early riddled with bugs, slow downs and glitchs. This will help fix some.

If low memory graphic memory - try setting the resolution in the ingame settings to 800x600 (ugly low resolution), however you then will find you can then max all the other settings nicer and it looks better without graphical glitching and not limiting up as much. The more higher resolution you add requires larger textures which if it can't fit in graphic memory, slows and/or rips or simply restricts you from increase it.

View distance is the next huge graphic performance on this game, increasing that goobles more memory. You might have to reduce it a bit to get things running smoothly.

Turn shadow Density down (even all the way to 0), it also makes a huge difference.

Turn off 'clip capture' under the Game menu when you're actually playing the game, huge difference.

Disable v-sync - if your not getting any ripping effect. Unlimits your fps.

Run the social club in offline mode or rip it off the game entirely. Reviews showed the cracked version of the game actually was benchmarked to run faster fps than the original DVD. Just don't do anything illegal now, your'll lose out on the patch updates, etc.

If you really want to each time you start the game to give system prority:
press ctrl+alt+delete and set highest prority for 'GTAIV.exe' and 'LaunchGTAIV.exe' then return to game and play.

(Not recommended to use UN-RESTRICTION, but if you want to try)

You can add the parameter on startup (right click the icon and at the end of the target line) add:
Quote
-nomemrestrict
and/or
Quote
-norestriction

This will remove it's force restriction (first for video memory, second for system resources), if you believe your computer can handle more.

or if you really don't have enough video memory and don't wish to upgrade, use this instead:
Quote
-availablevidmem 2.0

This is a multiplyer on the game thinking there's more video memory. So if you have 256MB graphic card, it would think it's a 512MB, etc. When the game has used up all video memory, it will try use your system memory or virtual memory instead which will be slower but removes the restriction.

Seriously though, the graphic card can make or break this game like a twig!
Even if it's a high performance but low memory one.

Solve : Help with Oracle Virtualbox?

Answer»

Hello to everyone out there.

I seem to be having trouble with Oracle's virtualbox. When i first used it, i thought creating the virtual windows will make it work straight away, but i have now found out you need an iso image.

I've been trying to search for information on how to create an .iso or where i can get the Windows 7 image file but no luck at all.

Does anyone know where i can get the Windows 7 .iso image for virtualbox or how i can create one?

All help appreciated.

MattPerhaps this is what you need: http://www.magiciso.com/index.htm

Some videos might also help: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1AjOR4H9njkCheers mate.

I have now just downloaded the program and used it and it SEEMS to have helped my problem.

Thank you so much and i hope i get my virtual computer working in the futur.

The most loving(lol) user online

Matt It is, unless I am very much mistaken, and I don't believe I am, not possible to legally download an iso image file of a Windows 7 install disk. However, you may be able to create an iso from your legally owned Windows 7 install DVD. However I am not sure if this would be legal unless you have the right licenses. In any case you can use a real, physical DVD or CD instead of an ISO file.
But i dont get this.

Why does this program exist when there is no .iso image to be found online(except for xp and older)

You need an .iso image for it to work. I watched the video that soybean sent me and the guy said that he DOWNLOADED the .iso file.

So if there is one then would you ever so kindly find me a windows 7 .iso image?

When you do find one then please send me it. ;D;D

Thanks

Matt
(1) An ISO file is a disk image.
(2) You don't need an ISO file to make Virtualbox work. A disk will do instead.
(3) Downloading Microsoft Windows ISOs is piracy.
(4) There are plenty of legal ISOs and disks available. Linux, for example.

When I first read this thread, I couldn't help but shudder at the mention of "Oracle". Biggest *censored* in the history of databases. Not as big as companies actually using it, though. But I managed to calm down when I realized that the OP was actually asking about VirtualBox, which only recently became Oracle's, so will be a far less *censored*-ey piece of software, at least for a while.

Of course you do- it's a virtual machine- you can't TAKE a blank machine and put it TOGETHER and have an OS magically, you need to install it.

ST answered this quite well. make a ISO from your Windows 7 disk. There is no "ISO for virtualbox" it's a virtual machine, and acts just like a normal machine. If it needed a special ISO then it would sort of fail at emulating an average PC, wouldn't it? Just your normal WIN7 disk would work.

BUT: there may be a caveat: to my understanding, running windows in a VM counts as running it on another machine. Therefore you would need two licenses to run Windows in a VM as well as on the host OS:

Quote
One final AREA that's come under a lot of scrutiny--and, as it turns out, misguided interpretations--regards virtualization. With Windows Vista, Microsoft is finally addressing virtualization in the EULA. And it goes something like this:

Any version of Windows Vista can host virtual machines (VMs), whether in Microsoft's Virtual PC solution or a rival product like VMWare Workstation. However, only two retail version of Windows Vista are licensed for use as a guest OS in a VM: Windows Vista Business and Ultimate. (A third--non-retail--Vista version, Vista Enterprise, has different licensing terms, which I'll address in a bit.)

Let that one sink in for a second. You cannot install Windows Vista Home Basic or Home Premium in a virtual machine, at least from a legal standpoint. (There is nothing technical preventing you from doing so, of course.) And on a related note, each retail copy of Vista you purchase is only licensable for one install. If you install a copy of Windows Vista in a virtual machine and then activate it, you cannot install the same copy of Vista on a physical machine and reactivate it (unless you take advantage of the transfer rights mentioned above, of course). One license equals one installation.

So why "restrict" users like that? Well, as it turns out, there's no massive conspiracy. Currently, the majority of Microsoft's virtualization users fall into exactly two groups: business customers and enthusiasts. Business customers will want Vista Business and enthusiasts will use Vista Ultimate. Simple. And though pundits might like to complain about this apparently arbitrary decision, the reality is that very, very few people can ever come up with a legitimate reason to run, say, Vista Home Basic in a VM. And those that want to, can, if they don't mind violating the Vista EULA and not receiving support.

Windows Vista Enterprise is a special case. With that version of Vista, which will be made available only to volume license customers, users will be able to install a single licensed copy of Vista on one physical PC and up to four VMs, simultaneously. Those four VMs, however, must all be installed on the same Vista Enterprise-based PC, and they must be used by the same user. "If customers need multiple virtual machines they should use Vista Enterprise," Microsoft's Scott Woodgate told me. "The intention is to be generous and enable whatever scenarios are customers may need." Sounds like a customer benefit to me.
I'm not sure how different it is with Win7, but I have no reason to doubt they have changed the "one license=one install" rule for virtualization.

So if you don't need a .iso image file then how can you do it?

Instructions will be perfect.

Thanks,

Solve : Thumbs and Buttons?

Answer»

This may be related to my PROBLEM I had with the streaming video. (See post "Need Help.....Streaming Video") I have that corrected but there are many sights that are missing buttons and the thumbs (pics) are blank. Example: I type in BMW Z3 in google and up to now I would see many sites related to this vehicle. I still see the links but all the images are blank white. If I click images up top I would normally GET pages and pages of thumbs. Now I get images not available or blank white thumbs. Again along with this sites are missing buttons. Examples: "Next" "Submit" "Close" etc. This doesn't happen on every site but it does happen way more than it should and on popular sites like Yahoo and Google. I'm running CA Security Suite if anyone uses that program. Thanks in advance folks. You led me to the solution for my streaming audio. I have confidence you'll come thru here. I hope I described this well but I wanted to add something. When I go to EBAY and go to an item, I see the pic of the item but I can't enlarge or zoom or look at the other views of the items. This must MEAN its a global setting on my PC keeping things from not workin. Windows 7 and CA Security suite. Another Example: I tried to join a forum and it had an image verification in the registration process. Next to the image verification I expected to see some letters or numbers and there was nothing. I tried Firefox and IE and had the same RESULT. It's getting frustrating folks. Please help. Maybe this is my higher power telling me I shouldn't be spending this much TIME on my PC. Please Help.............. Thank you Fixed............. I withdraw the cry for help,,,,,

Solve : Sound on PC?

Answer»

I received a U-tube link from a friend and tried to play the clip. No sound WOULD come on. I CHECKED my CABLE and volumn control and they were OK. I then went into the "Sounds and Audio devices" thing at the control panel and it tells me that I hace "NO AUDIO DEVICE" and "NO Sound Play Back" "NO MIDI (Whatever that is). So, how do I get my sound capability back??Desktop, or laptop?Desktop.....HP.....XP  That's all I know!
Your sound chip may be dead.
Try to go to HP site, download and install new sound driver, but since you have "NO AUDIO DEVICE", I wouldn't hold your breath. That sounds ominious! Will take your advice.
ThanksFANTASTIC......Works now!

Thanks, Broni,  ever so much for the "fix".

You're very welcome

I really didn't think, it'd work, so...good news

Solve : Need help...Streaming Video?

Answer»

Hi folks, I have a fairly new Dell XPS/windows7/Laptop. I've had it for about three months with no problems. My luck just ran out. No streaming videos work. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the latest Adobe Flash and the latest version of Java script. I've disabled my firewall and everything else I know what to do. This problem is in both Firefox and I.E. both which I have the latest versions of. Can anyone help? Thank you in adavance.just to test, try downloading and see if it works. Chrome automatically manages the flash so it will install automatically and update automatically by the browser.

If this works, then maybe it's just firefox and IE's problem. If not, maybe something on your computer is problematic.

When I try to download Google Chrome I select the "ACCEPT and install" button and my Laptop just sits there and laughs at me.Did you see a little bar pop up and and say something like "downloading google chrome" and then installing?

Go to the start menu, see if you have a new Google Chrome folder under the all programs section.

Now, if you do, you have installed it fine, and can now begin using it after you run thru the short little setup wizard that pops up when you run for the first time after installing.

I would think your fairly new laptop isn't 'joking AROUND' with google chrome browser :LOL

Hope its ok.  Here's what I found out: Flashplayer does not work on 64 bit web browsers within a 64 bit operating system. (True or not it led me to this solution). Uninstalled my flash player (again) went to the Start menu in Windows seven-All Programs- IE. There are two IE's there so make sure not to choose the 64 Bit version. Download the Flashplayer within the 32 bit version browser and Hurray Hurray. It's the first time I've been able to see streaming video in four days or more. Now I need to figure out
what is the purpose of the 64 bit IE if it limits me on what I can do with it?. Thanks all who read my post and for you help.  I think there is no 64 bit version of flashplayer. Adobe needs to make one if flashplayer is to work on 64 bit IE.

IE doesn't limit what you can do with it, but rather what software and stuff is made for it.Basically, the reason no 64-bit browser works with flash is because Adobe is too busy making useless download managers when they should be getting it working on 64-bit. Also it's a clue that the code they have so far is a HUGE festival of *censored* if they cannot simply change a compile time constant and get a 64-bit version like any sanely-coded program.why adobe needs a download manager for their files?

just have the user direct download the file and install it afterwards. Quote from: 2x3i5x on September 09, 2010, 02:08:41 PM

why adobe needs a download manager for their files?

Ask them!  I already have a nice long rant about that in a blog draft. Adobe is hardly the only one- it's hard to MISS, everywhere you go, sites WANT you to use their "download manager" and so many automatically decide to install a little program that starts up with your system to check for updates. Personally, I like the method where the program ONLY checks when you start it. it's pointless otherwise. And even then it hardly means that every vendor should have their own special update manager for the task. Making this worse is a lot of said programs either bring along passengers of malware or are used to advertise spamware and scamware in one form or another and you have a recipe for ridiculous.

Solve : Advice on trouble burning .avi files?

Answer»

Good day,

I have some .avi files on my laptop which PLAY fine in Realplayer and other players I have installed on the laptop.

However, when I copy the files to a DVD disk using Nero and making a data file copy,  they refuse to play in my COMPUTER from the newly BURNED disk.
So I tried several times to see if it was a one time error but no, they just don't play from the disk.  Advice?

THANKS in advance,
Samp
So, you put the disk in. Goto to my computer and right-click on your disk drive and goto OPEN. Then right-click the files you want and goto 'open with' and select 'realplayer'..............and nothing happens.

What exactly are you doing to get the files to play??

Need more info!!Hi,

thanks for your response...

Yes, that is what I do...I select the file I want on the DVD disc (the .avi file) and then either double click it or I select "open with" and choose one of the three players I have installed (All of which will play .avi files that I have on the computer and on other discs given to me by friends.)

So I am assuming I am doing something wrong in burning the .avi files to the DVD disk in the first place or the software isn't working or setup right.

Once I got a message that there was an error in the file but only once, the other times it just doesn't do anything.

Hope this answers your question...

thanks,
sampI would like you to try something to see if it changes your outcome. I want you to go to this web site
http://www.cocoonsoftware.com/
and download their free video converter software ( i use it) and then take one of your .avi files that is giving you the problem and convert it within the program to an .avi file format. Yes,yes i know it is supposedly already an .avi file. But i had this problem some time back (also with an .avi video) and i did what i am SUGGESTING and it was then burned and worked perfectly. Please don't ask why that was i have no idea. truenorth
