2101.	Solve : How to stop the Windows Live Messenger "What's New" lag?
Answer» The Problem I am using Windows Live Messenger and this program gets very annoying right when it signs in; it lags for at least 30 seconds and my CPU goes 100% all the time and I can't do much but wait. When did it happen? This problem started occuring when I unselected the 'Show what's new' option in Tools -> Options -> Layout. Not only that, but I went to the actual website (it logs you in with your .net passport and processes what 'what's new' groups you are subscribed to. I had no lag before, when they were all selected. Now that I deselected them all (that means, not using my account for any lame groups I'm not interested in), I get this lag problem, for some reason. What do I wish to do about it? I want to find a WAY to CATCH this SUCKER in its exact subroutine where it is doing something in the likes of loadWhatsNew(); and stop it, or block that method/routine. I'm not sure if I can do it with PE-Explorer, but ideas are welcome. Just as long as I can stop this lag. I think Microsoft Office 2010 should work same way as above if you're using that version.thanks for the advice, but Microsoft Office One Note 2007 isn't in the Control Panel Add/Remove Programs. Those are just icons you deleted. It was the change in Printer options that corrected the problem - but okay, as long as you're happy now.

After an initial investigation, I reached a conclusion that if the programme was to be made professional, sound (voice) would have to be recorded separately to the video. At the end, with the help of software (by syncing together) all the delays during playing were eliminated but there was a fundamental problem in that when sound was mixed with video, the quality of the file was reduced. For EDITING sound and video, *EDIUS5 software* was used and for recording we used *Camtasia Studio 6. We tried various formats but to resolve the quality problem, the video files were saved in hd/hdv* format using EDIUS 5 software. The LAST result, during the showing of the video, the PICTURE would not cover the whole of the screen and there were problems with the edges (showed black). The size of the created files were very large and this has made it very DIFFICULT to upload it . Could you please offer any suggestions as to how to remedy this problem???

2108.	Solve : OEM Reinstall: no original disk or product key (custom built pc)?
Answer» hi, a user brought in her older custom-built pc & asked me to reinstall her OS is it was full of VIRUSES, etc. She did not have her installation CD, and no product key or COA sticker either (perhaps the XP Home OEM that’s on there now was an upgrade of an earlier version - I think could have been built before COA stickers were required on side of box). But, in system properties I did find an OEM product key, it is 20 digits long. So I began to reinstall XP Home OEM with one of my cd’s and when it got to the screen where it wanted the product key, it wanted a 25 digit product key. At this point I don’t know what to do. The shop where the customer had the pc build is out of business and they did not give her any of the cd’s that came with her custom-built pc. What to do? More thinking on the subject, I am wondering why there was no sticker on the case. Possibly the shop that built it was not above-board. That being the possible scenario, I am thinking about interrupting the setup process, fdisking, and installing a retail xp version. I would attempt to do this by removing the hard drive and hooking it up to my other pc through an adapter CABLE, then deleting the os off it. Don’t know if this will work or not. Basically I’m stuck and need some ideas on how to MOVE forward. Thanks very much for your time! Answer» I should much appreciate your help on this strange new problem which is twofold: 1. Clicking either color item (for text or for cell) brings no change in designated cell(s) 2. When colors appear on Print Preview they do not on the Printout. It occurs on both HP desktop XP SP3 & Dell Vista Ultimate SP2. Am on IE8; Ctrl Panel list also shows !E7. Did see note saying High Contrast might make colors ineffective, so searched out that. Found how to turn on/off, and easily turned off High Contrast. Made no difference. Of course one doesn't go this route until having researched and tried System Restore and checked with various forums; in this case including Excel forum; MSN Ask forum; this one, which I regard highly; and several others. For various reasons one must also forego the usual easy workaround "solution", uninstall/reinstall, which tells you nothing as to cause -- and possible repetition of problem. You can be sure there were enough side issues to keep my guy busy a full hour! Soybean, the "cockpit trouble" allusion meant the fault was mine, not the program (although I do maintain MSN should have had more to say about THEME and its use/dangers!). I must have changed the theme on the laptop without slightest reason of collateral consequences. I don't even recall doing it, but I do know I was looking to change the overal screen appearance/color. Ignorance is NOT bliss! Point is you must use one of the MSN choices, such as Windows classic, to AVOID worksheet functions being unresponsive. As you say, using any standard MSN theme you have no issues. It has nothing to do with XP vs Vista, or even the differences between Office2007 Standard and Office2007 Commercial Pro. Solve : Spreadsheet COLOR items, for text; for cell(s), Unresponsive?

I should much appreciate your help on this strange new problem which is twofold:
1. Clicking either color item (for text or for cell) brings no change in designated cell(s)
2. When colors appear on Print Preview they do not on the Printout.

It occurs on both HP desktop XP SP3 & Dell Vista Ultimate SP2. Am on IE8; Ctrl Panel list also shows !E7.

I am unable to use either COLOR icons -- for text or for cells. No trouble heretofore which makes it so frustrating.
Ordinarily, following usual usage, all is well. For unknown reasons, now neither has any effect.

Explored for cause/cure without finding anything more than instructions already well known.
Did see note saying High Contrast might make colors ineffective, so searched out that. Found how to turn on/off, and easily turned off High Contrast. Made no difference.

So out of ideas at this juncture. What am I doing wrong or failing to do?

I don't know if I'm more CONCERNED with the cost ($65) of resolution or its simplicity (required two minutes), but I'm back to normal.

FYI, shifting THEME back to Windows Classic (or few other choices) restored COLOR icons to full function.

As for gridlines, clicking ZOOM at Print Preview restored them in all columns. As is well said, "Live & learn"!

$65 for two minutes, OUCH! Thanks for posting the outcome and solution you found. But, frankly, this still doesn't make much sense. Are you saying you can not use the standard Windows XP theme on your Windows XP computer and the standard Vista theme on your Vista system? That just doesn't sound right. I have Office 2007 installed on a laptop running Vista Home Premium with the standard desktop theme and have had no issues with Excel. I'm glad your problem is solved, although it cost you a few bucks. $65 for two minutes equals $1860 an hour (I want that job).

I'm confused about this also. I've spent a lot of time in Excel, played with a few different themes, but don't understand how one would affect the other.

Can you tell us more of what cured the problem, or what they said?I'm far from an expert in Excel...but this just doesn't make sense.I'll do my best to cover each of your queries.

Patio, as you know, you don't get the tech pros at home without a minimum. Even so, the problem is there are lots of MSN pros, but their expertise often is an area not the needed one. So qualifications become even more important, starting with assurance the tech has passed MSN testing.
This eliminates automatic choice of the least expensive.
Of course one doesn't go this route until having researched and tried System Restore and checked with various forums; in this case including Excel forum; MSN Ask forum; this one, which I regard highly; and several others.

For various reasons one must also forego the usual easy workaround "solution", uninstall/reinstall, which tells you nothing as to cause -- and possible repetition of problem.

You can be sure there were enough side issues to keep my guy busy a full hour!

Soybean, the "cockpit trouble" allusion meant the fault was mine, not the program (although I do maintain MSN should have had more to say about THEME and its use/dangers!). I must have changed the theme on the laptop without slightest reason of collateral consequences. I don't even recall doing it, but I do know I was looking to change the overal screen appearance/color. Ignorance is NOT bliss!

Point is you must use one of the MSN choices, such as Windows classic, to AVOID worksheet functions being unresponsive. As you say, using any standard MSN theme you have no issues.

And the generic versions that i've tried are a joke compared to the 30 day trial versions. They don't have the capabilities to do all 4 functions. Answer» My isp is msn and I use msn explorer. In the mail SECTION, there are "Folders on MSN" which is email on msn's SERVERS and "Folders on your COMPUTER" which is email I've stored on my computer. These folders are on my c drive (>> application data > Microsoft > MSN > DB30). The emails are there but really need msn explorer to view correctly. ALSO, the emails show up in msn explorer, as if they're there with the size, subject, ETC, but when I open them, nothing comes up. I'm not sure if this is an msn explorer issue or something else. Any thoughts?

2127.	Solve : Cannot delete image in Microsoft Word?
Answer» I have just converted a pdf file into Word format and though all the images are behaving themselves one will simply not comply. It seems to "DRAW" itself, unlike the other images and if I try to select it these little BOXES come up which seem to result in no effect if I delete them. I cannot work out what to do. The rest of the images and document and settings have been worked on for days and are right but this image is, I believe, messing up the conversion BACK to pdf when hitting the 'creating tags' phase. There must be a way to delete an image from a Word document! I have tried to get around it but there seems to be no way. If I make a template the thing is copied over too. I cannot use a new document because I lose all my settings (it's about 50 pages). Can anyone help? I'm using the old word 97 but this should not be the problem. Can you right-click the image and "cut" it?No, it cannot be selected. I have had to COPY the entire document up to the point before the picture over to another document, reformat it all again and then copy the document after the picture and do the same. Then I inserted a fresh picture. It's ridiculous that 1. you cannot delete a picture in Word and 2. you cannot copy over all the settings (not content) to a new document. Answer» I downloaded and installed ZONEALARM Free , hoping it would work with WINDOWS 7. It seemed to work with Firefox and Thunderbird but every time I tried to use IE8 it would cause my rig to lock up. I tried Ctrl-Alt-Del to no avail, Alt+F4, no go, Esc, still nothing. Every time I ended up having to use the reset BUTTON to reboot. I really like Zonealarm but this just will not do. Does anyone know of a fix for this? (Ha ha in advance, don't use IE8 isn't an OPTION)ZoneAlarm even the free version is compatible with Windows 7. Too many DIFFERENT pc's there and at home. ZA and Malwarebytes are only 2 security programs we ran on those pc's. The firewall we used is ZoneAlarm's. We are in process of handing this over to a systems analyst so changes are in the works. There are better ways to handle support and security on a network. But there were only 2 when I first started there so it has grown considerably. Answer» A family member unhooked my hardrive and hooked up another to apparently check theirs out then reconnected MINE. Every time I start the computer now I get the Found NEW Hardware message for the CDR drive and the DVD drive. Their respective icons appear in the Devices with Removable Storage in My Computer for a brief moment then disappear and neither unit will spool up when a disc is installed. Any ideas will be greatly APPRECIATED on how to get the DRIVES to be recognized by the computer and functional again.Doesn't it even begin to spool at all? That's not normal indeed. See above, also if you turn the disk over and look at the underneath surface under a bright light you can usually see if it has been burned. It is hard to describe, but the burned part is a different colour. There are no scratched, scuffs etc on the disc.

Nothing could be less technical than packet writing; It is built into Windows Vista by default; it is sometimes called "drive letter access" and it enables you to just drag and drop files into a CD-R or RW in Windows Explorer, without using a burning application.

Like today I'm SITTING there trying to move THINGS around the room and I hit 'edit' so I can edit and it wont work right sometimes.

Answer» I have an issue connecting to my server via FTP Filezilla or any client. Nobody can solve this…..issue I can connect here at the public or any other net work besides my home. This was happening end of last summer magically went away. Then came back again one night during and upload to one of my web sites. For no reason. Now I cant connect[only at my hose] I'm connected now at the public library and uploading files. If shut down and go home I cannot connect via FTP. I had Comcast replace my modem; I connected my laptop directly to the modem bypassing the network equipment. And still no ftp connection, although there is an internet connection. So next I reformatted both my laptops and my main tower PC reconfigured SET my router and access points. Still no FTP connection even though I can surf and send/receive email. With the same lap top now reformatted I'm at the library and I can instantly connect FTP, if I close down and go home I will not be able to connect even after a new modem and reformatting & reconfiguring everything. Host/user/pass info in concrete. Any help?? My net work Running xp on one rig and vista on a couple others. 1. Comcast cable from pole 2. Cable modem (new) 3. Linksys router and (1) Linksys switch (reconfigured) a. Cat5 to all rooms of house servicing i. Tower 1 ii. Tower2 iii. Linksys connection point in house servicing laptops b. 2136.	Solve : Unable to detect internet connection after removing malware?
Answer» * THANKS to Harry 48 who helped me remove the malware and referred me to this forum to troubleshoot the subsequent interent connection issue. Please see below for background: I have a HP Dv6226 LAPTOP running Windows 7 Ultimate (Evalution copy Build 7100) which I upgraded a few months back on-line from Windows Vista. I recently got some pop ups that kept flashing me virus alert and whenever i TRY to run any program it says "Application cannot be executed. The file is infected......." (not even a command prompt or notepad can be opened but with multiple try sometime i get the command prompt but it is ridiculous). Before looking into this forum i tried Installing MBAM - Malware byte in normal mode, but it blocks it from installing even if I try to rename it before downloading. Then I google'd and searched a couple forums and tried the instructions on a couple links. Superantispyware and a couple others were not GETTING installed at all. I get the installer screen and quickly it vanishes before i can access anything. i tried renaming it with .SCR instead of .exe but still same issue. I did luck out finally and succeed in installing hijackthis under the name iexplore.exe. Also my avast anti virus program found nothing after a full scan. So I succesfully ran hijack this and then removed the following : R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar,LinksFolderName = O2 - BHO: (no name) - {5C255C8A-E604-49b4-9D64-90988571CECB} - (no file) Afterword I restarted computer and ran combofix and though I BELIEVE it stated compatibility issues with Windows 7 it just started running (I may have hit OK too many times?) So it did its 50 something stage scan then deleted a bunch of files then rebooted the computer. Upon reboot, computer mentions it is missing some sort of .dll file I beleive (it was late and I didnt write down the name ugh) everything seems to be working fine now but the internet signal bar icon shows a big red x through it. It says not connected and no internet connection available. I know my wireless networkis working fine as I confirm that by using my work laptop to connect to my wireless network normally. When you troubleshoot it (by right clicking on top of icon and slecting troubleshoot problem) it says troubleshooting could not find the problem. However when you view detailed information (by clicking the link at the bottom of the nework diagnostic window that said it couldn't find the problem). It lists that WLAN autoconfig service could not be started. So then I went to the services list and when I tried to manually start the WLAN autoconfig service, it gave me the following error: Windows could not start the wlan autoconfig service on local computer error 1075: the dependancy service does not exist or has been marked for deletion Can someone please help me get me internet working again? I have the log report from combo fix . The last thing I tried is doing a previous restore point but my restore point option was shut off so I don't have a previous restore point. HELP! I have since run malwarebytes which has seemed to have removed/quarantine more files but I STILL can not connect to the net. *** THANKS to Harry 48 who helped me remove the malware and referred me to this forum to troubleshoot the subsequent interent connection issue. Please see below for background:

I have a HP Dv6226 LAPTOP running Windows 7 Ultimate (Evalution copy Build 7100) which I upgraded a few months back on-line from Windows Vista.

I recently got some pop ups that kept flashing me virus alert and whenever i TRY to run any program it says "Application cannot be executed. The file **** is infected......." (not even a command prompt or notepad can be opened but with multiple try sometime i get the command prompt but it is ridiculous).

Before looking into this forum i tried Installing MBAM - Malware byte in normal mode, but it blocks it from installing even if I try to rename it before downloading.

Then I google'd and searched a couple forums and tried the instructions on a couple links. Superantispyware and a couple others were not GETTING installed at all. I get the installer screen and quickly it vanishes before i can access anything. i tried renaming it with .SCR instead of .exe but still same issue.

I did luck out finally and succeed in installing hijackthis under the name iexplore.exe. Also my avast anti virus program found nothing after a full scan.

So I succesfully ran hijack this and then removed the following :

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar,LinksFolderName =
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {5C255C8A-E604-49b4-9D64-90988571CECB} - (no file)

Afterword I restarted computer and ran combofix and though I BELIEVE it stated compatibility issues with Windows 7 it just started running (I may have hit OK too many times?) So it did its 50 something stage scan then deleted a bunch of files then rebooted the computer.

Upon reboot, computer mentions it is missing some sort of .dll file I beleive (it was late and I didnt write down the name ugh) everything seems to be working fine now but the internet signal bar icon shows a big red x through it. It says not connected and no internet connection available. I know my wireless networkis working fine as I confirm that by using my work laptop to connect to my wireless network normally.

When you troubleshoot it (by right clicking on top of icon and slecting troubleshoot problem) it says troubleshooting could not find the problem. However when you view detailed information (by clicking the link at the bottom of the nework diagnostic window that said it couldn't find the problem). It lists that WLAN autoconfig service could not be started. So then I went to the services list and when I tried to manually start the WLAN autoconfig service, it gave me the following error:

Windows could not start the wlan autoconfig service on local computer error 1075: the dependancy service does not exist or has been marked for deletion

Can someone please help me get me internet working again? I have the log report from combo fix . The last thing I tried is doing a previous restore point but my restore point option was shut off so I don't have a previous restore point. HELP!

I have since run malwarebytes which has seemed to have removed/quarantine more files but I STILL can not connect to the net.

I also just ran sfc/scannow and it stated that Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.

2141.	Solve : Spooler Subsystem Application Encountered a problem..?
Answer» Hi, I did the REPAIR process from my disc. When the system restarted I got the error "0x77f78bf9", SQL could not open....SQLEVN70.rll and Spooler SUBSYSTEM application encountered a PROBLEM and needs to close. I did the " sfc /scannow" process and rebooted. The top two errors did not appear again but the Spooler ONE did. What can I do for that? I have never seen it before. ThxIs this a server? What version windows are you running? Windows XP. I assume the Spooler has something to do with the printer, is that right? If so, the printers are attached to the computer I am referring to and other computers use the home network to print on those printers.

But a Avoid the DVD RW. Do not alter the second partition. (You already KNEW that, but I wanted to say that before somebody else.) Yes, windows 7 is smaller that Vista. But it stores data the same way Vista does. Most of the stuff on the commuter is stuff he put there. -Right? The difference is size of the Operating system would be a small gain. My personal recommendation is to not change the OS on a laptop unless you really, really have to do it. Here is the best option, and other here will back me up on this point. For modest investment, you can get a much larger hard drive for the laptop that is the same case size, takes about the same power but can hold twice as much data and programs. But you will need the help of a friend with a desktop PC to "clone" the contents of the old drive to the new one. Later the old drive can go in an external case and be used for "over FLOW" for the stuff he collects.andie, While i most certainly AGREE with most of Geek-9pm's suggestions. I would reverse the last one. I would purchase an external usb connectible HDD (they are very inexpensive these days). I have seen 1 TB externals as low as $79.00 U.S. I would not remove or change either of the internals now or later. He should get into the habit of putting his own stored stuff on the external as opposed to the internals.The added advantage is that the items on the external can become portable to other computers. This suggestion along with perhaps a more judicious use (add/remove effort) with all the HDD's could DRAMATICALLY reduce the amount of storage he is currently using.truenorthtruenorth, you are right. Set up:
1. Must have a .zip or .rar compressor.

Steps:
1. Save the picture of choice to your desktop.
2. Make a new .rar or .zip folder on your desktop.
3. Add the files you want to hide into the .zip or .rar
4. Click start menu, run, cmd.
5. In Command Prompt type cd "desktop" with the quotation marks.
6. Now type in copy /b picturename.jpg + foldername.rar outputfilename.jpg

Answer» I ran chkdsk c: and it checked my C Drive and told me I had a fue prablems. Then it says USE the /F switch to fix them. Now the way it fixs BAD sectore is by MARKING them so they wont be used. But if there is Data in them the /R switch will PUT the Data in good secores. So why does it not say to use /F /R to fix bad sectores and relocate the Data? Or what am I not getting??As stated in your other post the /r switch assumes /f...... It does both. So if you use /r you don't need /f.

Have you looked at the Page Setup options in your PDF reader?the proper printing meant that i hav some powerpoint slide fit into pdf page. there's alot of empty space wasted on the edge. I want to print out without the empty edge. Im using adobe pdf viewer... no such function facilidated Thus, i need a software which can modify pdf margin... I have Adobe Reader 8.2.0 and it does have Page Setup but I don't believe that will do what you want to do, anyway. What you want to do is similar to cropping a photo. I believe you need to experiment with your creation of the PDF containing the PowerPoint slides and correct the problem at that point. Once the PDF document is created, you can't "crop" it, or REMOVE empty space wasted on the edge.

(okay lots of words spring to mind) Trying to update now but it wants to install SP3 and everytime it tries it comes up with failure due to ntdll.dll being open or in use.
