Solve : I want to control which programs access the internet.?

Answer»

hi, If I'm USING the internet, there are occasions when my download slows down and upon checking my Zonealarm panel I see that a program such as Java is using my download. I don't mind if Java checks for updates, but if I am doing something I want to be able to throttle whatever Java is doing until I finish what I am doing. After all I bought the computer and the broadband, so I want control. Can I get SOFTWARE to do this?Java should not be RUNNING unles you ask it to. You can stop this in services in msconfig,

also zone alarm is a virus within it self. Quote from: ident on December 28, 2009, 06:29:53 AM

Ignore this guyYou can always go to the "Program Access" window to Tick or Untick the programs against the 'Net Access'!

I don think there is any better alternative to Zonealarm when it comes to having a better control of Programs!

Moreover, this is what you can try>>>

Control Panel>>Locate the JAVA Icon>>Go to Advanced Tab>>Uncheck the last TWO options.

Hence, No more Tray Icons & no more Bandwidth restriction!

Solve : HELP!!! Something just happened - something called System Tools tried to invade?

Answer»

I was looking at the things you were TELLING me about the PPV 2007 and 2003 when all of a sudden this THING popped up on my screen and said it was System Tools, all these viruses and Trojans had invaded my computer, scan now, pay $29.95 ONE time charge and my desktop is black, it wouldn't let me do anything but turn it off. I restarted in safe mode, it was still there, every time I tried to do anything, it wouldn't allow Windows to open, frantically trying to get RID of it, I have F-Secure (don't like it but my computer dude insists it's the best-he's going to hear from me!) and now am running a virus scan because all of a sudden that "Security Tool" has vanished except for the fact that my desktop is black, no ICONS whatsoever. I'm afraid to cut off the computer for fear it will come back.  This has never happened before.  I don't know what to do. All these windows kept popping up on my screen telling me I was running my computer unprotected, did I want to continue, when I said yes, it still kept popping windows up at me asking me.  Am I being attacked?  It had icons on my taskbar at the bottom and now all of a sudden they are gone, however, desktop and icons are not there.
Go to the malware section of this forum and follow the instructions at the top of that page.

Solve : I'm trouble again - got a question about pps. files?

Answer»

I get emails with attachments that are pps.  I click to open and it says I need to set a file association.  Before Vista reinstall, I had to download Microsoft Power Point Viewer 7. I did that and then when I get an email with pps., I saved it to my desktop, double clicked it and Power Point Viewer immediately opened it up.  So I downloaded it again but this time when I double click where I sent it to desktop, it says the same thing, I need to set a file association. What am I doing wrong?
I don't know why you're getting different behavior now than what you experienced before reinstalling Vista.  Anyway, you need to set the file association.  Here's a REFERENCE: How do I... Change file extension associations in Windows Vista?Well, soybean, I had done everything on the link you gave me, and it's just not working. When I click on the set file associations, go down to pps's, it tells me Power Point Viewer is what opens it, but it doesn't. I'm going to keep working on it as I get a lot of pps. emails and some of the pictures were awesome after I got it working before the meltdown.  Thanks, though, for the help.
You could try uninstalling Power Point Viewer and then reinstalling it. Okay, I will do that, however I did find SOMETHING interesting on here that my computer dude must have put on here. It's Microsoft Office Power Point Viewer 2003. The one I just installed was Microsoft Office Power Point Viewer 2007.  But I can't find how to uninstall 2003.  Sometimes right-clicking it has an uninstall, or you can go to Open File Location and do it there, but it only says delete it, not uninstall.  If I delete it, it's really not going anywhere except from the list of programs on my start menu to Recycle Bin, which is nowhere, right?  I want to know how you people know all this great stuff and I try to figure it out but I'm never right.  I just continue to screw it up!Did you try going to your "Control panel", and then to "Add and REMOVE Programs" and uninstall PPV 2003 from there? Quote from: Ironman on December 30, 2009, 09:40:48 PM

Did you try going to your "Control panel", and then to "Add and Remove Programs" and uninstall PPV 2003 from there?

That's a good idea! Anyway, when you get more familiar with how things work, then it'll be easier.

I'd try to learn how to get your computer working like you want it; after all, your using it  Vista doesn't have add or remove programs.  It just has Add Hardware.  If it has an add or remove programs, I can't find it.
I just found this - you can go to Control Panel, and click Programs and Features, and you can uninstall there.  Strangely, Power Point Viewer 2003 is not on there but Power Point Viewer 2007 is.  And the 2003 is on my Start Menu.  ?
If you have upgraded a software, the newer one will be listed in the uninstall panel. Programs and Features is the Add/Remove program in Vista.

I mean, PPV 2007 you installed without uninstalling PPV 2003 first correct? PPV 2007 is therefore an UPGRADE, and probably has upgraded from 2003 to the newer version. Hence, you don't see it in the uninstall panel.

I would think if that's what you did, you could uninstall PPV 2007 (probably will revert BACK to PPV 2003, else if not, you have no PPV on your computer and can reinstall PPV 2007 if that's what you want)

I would install latest version because it can handle the newer file types that you might see.In the meantime... you can start powerpoint viewer and drag the pps file onto it to open them.

Solve : Network Computer -- Outlook 2003 -- Printing Error -- Multiple Messages?

Answer»

Okay, so at work, we have Public Folders set up on Outlook (not uncommon).  In the "Demand Folder" our IS department has set up a CUSTOM template for one of the folders (Credit Card payments).  On very few computers in our office, you can go into the folder, select multiple messages in the list at the same time, and hit the print BUTTON.  Naturally, the emails will print out in order individually.  On MANY of the computers in our office though, if they try to print more than one email at a time, they get the error message: "one or more of the items you tried to print does not support printing and was not printed".  Our IS department has no idea what this means.     I'm pretty sure they don't even care...

Is there any way to fix this problem?  Help would be greatly appreciated!!!

Amber.DawnTry This:
1. Start Outlook in safe mode then printrun->outlook /safe> [it can disable 3rd-party Add-ins temporarily]
2. Try to send affected user two mails which contain only text content, then print both for narrow down cause
3. Copy those unprintable mails to a PST, then move it to a testing PC which is fine with print multi-mails function, SEE if you can reproduce the issue. If you can, we’re able to narrow down the cause to the mails themselves

Workaround:
1. Does there have unopened HTML formatted message in those unprintable mails? If so, see KB 301910
2. Do those unprintable mails contain HTML content? If so, see KB 831608 (It must DOWNLOAD content if you want to print a message that contains blocked content)
3. Check unprintable mail’s “Message Class”, change it to IPM.NOTE if it’s not before
a. Run MAPI Editor->”Session” menu-> Logon and Display Store Table->choose your mail profile (this will not appear if you only have one profile)->Right-click the one that display name column shows “Mailbox-your name”->choose “Open Store”
b. Now in the second window, expand “Root-Mailbox”->expand “IPM_SUBTREE”->Double-click “Inbox”
c. In the third window, check “Message Class” column of unprintable mail

What brought you do that decision?Looking at various forums, it seems there is quite a bit of difference between the 03 and 07 versions.  That's why I thought about upgrading.  Then when I found OOo I thought..Why not and figured this was the place to get good feedback. What differences are there that you need?Looks like there are MANY more integrated things in word, and I seem to find more formulas and COLUMNS in excel.Never ever consider about OpenOffice..or you'll witness further fall in the Staff Productivity!

Everyone will then have a decent time to relish a CUP of Coffee till the document loads using OO, instead remain stick to Microsoft Office 2003.

One needs to have a 'Robust'* machine to run Office 2007 as optimally to that to 2003!

Solve : Doing a backup-not sure if posting in right forum?

Answer»

For Christmas my husband gave me a Seagate portable hard drive to backup my computer. So I PLUGGED it in, installed it, read about it, but still not sure about what I'm to do. At 10:00 p.m. tonight it is scheduled to backup my computer, my drive c, personal and public folders. Am I supposed to backup the whole computer??? He bought it because earlier this month I downloaded the new version of my antivirus program and it stuck a password page on it and I had never used a password and we couldn't get into the computer, not even in safe mode.  I ended up having to take it for repair ($202.00), which he ended up having to uninstall Vista and reinstall it. I lost a lot of stuff, all my husband's music downloads, my email addresses, but he did manage to save My Documents, My Pictures, and a few other things. Can anyone help me with this, I'm somewhat computer stupid and I'd just like to know if having this start a full backup at 10:00 is the thing to do.  Thanks in advance.

Debby
Instead of backing up certain things, you best option is to create an image of your hard drive.

Acronis True Image: http://www.acronis.com/ - not free, but the best

Free alternatives:
- Macrium Reflect: http://www.macrium.com/ReflectFree.asp (highly recommended)
- DriveImage XML: http://www.runtime.org/driveimage-xml.htm
- SelfImage: http://www.excelcia.org/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=21
- Paragon Drive Backup: http://www.paragon-software.com/home/db-express/Broni,
Please make it simple.
All she wants to know if using the Seagram Seagate backup will do the job.
She did not say which product . Seagate makes a number of products fro home use that make it easy for most people to do a daily  backup.

Yes, the Seagate  thing is good.

(For some some reason the spelling checker ...
keeps changing Seagate to Seagram.
Did you do that , Broni?)
debby - I agree with Broni. Use disk imaging software once a week to create an image of your hd and save it on the new External drive (be sure to delete the old image(s) or you'll quickly run out of space). You can ALSO backup key data files separately just as added security, but the image will cover everything. The new Seagates actually ship with a version of Acronis True Image....
It does not do everything the paid version does however.Since that new Seagate portable hard drive is probably plenty large enough to hold complete images of your internal hard drive, I guess I agree with Broni and Allan here.

I have an external hard drive enclosure that has a 40 GB hard drive (HD) in it.  I originally only had a 10GB HD in it, so I got in the practice of backing up selected folders and files rather than saving entire drive images.  I just use the Windows Backup utility that comes with Windows XP for this.  Backup "jobs" can be saved.  I presume the Acronis software that comes with your Seagate portable hard drive also allows for saving backup jobs (maybe it USES a different word for this).

Here's an example of saving a "job".  I want to use one backup procedure to save My Documents, email messages, and some folders outside of My Documents.  So, in Windows Backup, I select the desired folders and/or files and name, i.e. save, that job.  Then, the next time I want to run the same backup procedure, I do not need to repeat the process of selecting folders and/or files to be backup up; I just select the saved job and run it.  I have another saved job for backing up a HD partition I use for downloaded software and another one for certain other files.

One thing you should do, whether you create an image of the entire hard drive or selectively backup certain folders and files, is to test restoring individual files from the Seagate portable hard drive.  You can do this by renaming a file on your computer, a file that was previously backed up to the Seagate portable hard drive, and see whether you can restore that one file. soybean, I like your post. Hope the OP likes it too!  Thanks.    Right now I backup using PowerArchiver; I have a backup script that executes every morning at 3:30AM that backs up my project folders, and compresses them into a dated 7-Zip ULTRA compressed archive on my external 160GB disk; the files I backup are a "mere" 500-750MB or so, and compress down to about 250MB. I usually keep about a week or so worth of backups, usually more. One reason I do it this way is because my externals are 500GB and 160GB, the 500GB is "well used", being it's the old drive that would still boot if I put it in my old PC; and these are far too small to backup my 750GB C: drive and my new 1.5TB D: drive, so I have to resort to the "PICKY and choosy" method, which is pretty easy; a single folder on drive D: is personally all I care about. It CONTAINS my life's work, and losing it once was enough! PowerArchiver isn't a free program, but there are many free alternatives that can image drives in a compressed form as well as archiver programs that can compress a subset of a drives files, and of course the backup programs included with windows XP Pro and higher work just as well, too.

I'm personally only really big on backing up things that I cannot easily replace; I can easily reinstall windows, office, etc from my CDs, and redownload the other various applications, but rewriting the program code I have could take years... that's not even an exaggeration; I lost almost all of my projects after a hard drive failure (well, after a series of hard drive failures) and I've only re-created three of around 20 projects that I had. The three I have recreated are many many times better, and I doubt I would have rewritten them to be better had I not lost them to begin with; but, I don't think I would like to see if I can duplicate that effort today...BC,
Does it also make coffee?
Wow! I got a lot of help but not sure what the heck everyone is talking about:

Broni - As usual, you always give me good information, this time however, I'm not sure I understand it all.

Geek-9pm - Thanks, I need simple!

Allan - I guess I did total image of computer - took 2 hours, 15 minutes on Seagate. So you are saying in a week I need to delete it and redo it?

patio - Did not see anything that said Acronis True Image on anything.

soybean - Okay, I understand everything except how to rename a file and then see if I can restore it.  How do you rename a file?

BC_Programmer - totally lost me at backup script, project folders, compressing and 7-Zip, etc.  Huh???

Remember what I said - I AM computer stupid.  All help is appreciated though, as I surely need it and want to learn.

Is this what you have?
Seagate® Replica™ Quote

So you are saying in a week I need to delete it and redo it?
No, next time, you'll perform so called "incremental backup", which is going to be much faster and smaller. It'll back up only those files, which changed, or were added since the backup, you just did. Quote
patio - Did not see anything that said Acronis True Image on anything.

Did you recieve a CD with the drive ? ?No, no CD.  It is Seagate: FreeAgent Go Portable Drive.  The box says:

Solve : Opening .nrg (Nero Burning) with other software?

Answer»

Hello,

I would like to ask you if it is possible to open .nrg FILE (Nero Burning) with other software ?

Regards,
These will all allow the mounting of NRG files.
    * Alcohol 120%
    * CDemu
    * Daemon Tools
    * MagicISO
    * PowerISO
    * Roxio Toast
And IMGBURN ?
I BELIEVE so...best way to find out is try it.

I don't have and never will USE Nero again. Why not NERO ?Too bloated.
Too many unauthorised changes to the machine.
I like my Apps to ask me before they make any UNDUE changes...Same reasons I don't use it anymore.

IMGBurn is at least as good, and it weighs only a few MB, compared to Nero which now seems to consume an entire DVD.use PowerISO

it cud also open and mount .NRG files Quote from: the_mad_joker on December 26, 2009, 01:45:14 AM

Solve : favorites is lost …?

Answer»

Hello
I lost my favorites list in chm file (php_manual.chm) after reinstall Windows XP Pro.
How can I backup them? Where they store?

Thanks
Do you mean the favorites of your IE web browser? The folder of favorites is located in "C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Favorites" by default. It COULD have probably been trashed during your reinstallation. You may refer to some data recovery software like HANDY Recovery or Final Data to retrieve the data. However, since new data has been written on the place where your favorites data is lost, I am afraid the successful rate is very low..But it is worth a try. the favorites is not for IE, some CHM files have favorites. so you can mark some pages for next reading.
I lost the favorites of some CHM files.

[Saving space, attachment deleted by admin]You don't say what kind of 'reinstall' you did?  Did you do a SEARCH for .chm?

Alan <><  if you REINSTALLED XP they are gone they are not stored with or near the CHM file itself.but favorites of CHM must be stored in some place!  They are...until you do a re-install.

Solve : Audacity?

Answer»

I'm running Win 7 & was wondering if anyone know's if the Audacity software will work? It list's Vista, but not 7. How about the beta version?  The software would only be used to TRANSFER some of my OLD cassettes to my hard drive if I can figure out how to do it.Without the site providing information EXPLICIT to Windows 7 I could only recommend that you try it. There's no reason why it shouldn't work. You can always run it in COMPATIBILITY mode. Windows 7 (32 bit) runs pretty much everything Vista & XP did.Sorry, but I should have mentioned I'm running 64 bit. It also show's to have a compatability mode.I'd guess it will still work - download a trial version. 64 bit is a little more finicky than 32 bit, but again - most standard apps should be fine.

Solve : getting my usb only laser printer to print?

Answer»

I have been using a home-brewed (in basic) data MANAGEMENT PROGRAM for about 20 years, on a series of computers running DOS 3.1 and subsequent. I now have a (RELATIVELY) new Dell Dimension3000 running XP and a hp2600n color laserjet. The computer has a serial port (along with the usb) but the printer does not.
Now I can't get the data or the program itself to print. Everything else prints just fine, in LIVING COLOR!
Is there some command I can put into my batch file to get  back to work?
What I think is going on is that your program doesn't have any USB drivers.

you can try SOMETHING like this...

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3514952&CatId=464

Frankly I think you may want to look at a rewrite with something newer like .NET

Solve : Have I been scamed??

Answer»

I'm having trouble which may relate to my hard drive.  I went to Western Digital and downloaded a DIAGNOSTIC program which must be activated by booting from my CD drive.  I thought Vista's "burn" function which appears across the top of the explorer window would do the trick, but it doesn't. The disk will not boot.  I noticed that they recommend using Nero or Roxio.

I did a google search for CD burners and got both on the list.  Roxio was $49 but Nero said "Free Download".  That sounded pretty good!  Clicking on the link took me to a Roxio ad with a big "download" button.  I clicked and this took me to a "Three Step Sign In" which had the name Nero.9-Ultra.com above and Software HQ below. I filled in my name and email and clicked next.

Here I found three options:  three years for 12.95 per year
two years for 15.95 per year
                                             one year for 19.95
There was no other option and I guessed $20 wasn't all that bad for a valuable tool, I was in a hurry to GET on with the test ...  I put in my card number, etc at the next screen and pressed next.

The screen said congratulations!  Over in the corner it said: You are being charged $52.80 - no explanation what the additional $32 was for!!

It also said "use your email to log in" (there had been no password established)
I entered my email and was given a list of software types, had to pick out CD burners all over again and when I clicked on Nero I was taken to CNET downloads and presented with a "free trial" version of Nero which I could upgrade later for only $72!!

What do you folks know about Software HQ?

I'm stopping payment in the morning!!

Nero software is available in various versions, INCLUDING a basic, cut-down free version of Nero 9 called Nero Lite. The Nero official website is www.nero.com. The site you mentioned, nero9-Ultra.com, is widely reported as a scam site, so, yes it does look as if you have been scammed. You should definitely CONTACT your card company.
I agree with salmon trout but would also like to ASK what are you using for AV software? Most top AV's will warn you of suspicious websites.
Also in future only use someone like paypal to pay over the net if your not sure as they offer an insurance. And if something says FREE all over the site but then wants money ask yourself the question would a legit company do this. Also some credit card companies offer Insurance against online fraud so if you have used a credit card speak to them.
And last of all, if in doubt about obtaining a legal programme come on here ask the question and we will direct you to a safe link.
Good luck  CDBurnerXPro is Free...runs great...and will create bootable CD/DVD's...

Solve : Scanning lots of photos?

Answer»

Hey! Do you all know any free software that would allow me to scan lots of pictures? I have a scanner already, but I want to digitize four or more 4x6's on the flatbed at a TIME. I NEED software that will automatically separate them for me (I have lots of photos). I'm good enough with GIMP...but I don't want to manually separate thousands of photos.  Quote from: aniketkar94 on December 20, 2009, 05:20:11 PM

I don't know of any such software. I think this is going to take some MANUAL effort. This seems to be the best option: How to Scan Photos to a Computer Efficiently; however, I would agree the only efficiency the procedure offers is not having to scan one photo at a time.Try Picasa, free photo MANAGE software, though I am a little aware of its too powerful SCANNING which would compromise my privacy.

Solve : Driver scanner and updater?

Answer»

Does anyone know of a good driver scanner and one that will update the drivers. Thank OjasDrivers should be uploaded INDIVIDUALLY by the user. THIRD party "driver scanners" are at best USELESS and at worst dangerous. Visit the website of the hw manufacturer for the device you want to update, download the latest driver, and install it manually. More Important - do not update ANY driver unless there is a specific need and reason to do so - "NEWER" is not a good reason. If your current driver provides the needed functionality, do not update it.I stand my point with #2, because I USED to have painful experience with driver scanner and updater. The allegedly powerful driver scanner almost killed my system with wrong drivers. I should have not be tempted by the misleading driver update news issued by the driver scanner. So make your update through official approach.

Solve : Justify alignment?

there are spaces that are being ADDED in the middle of word when printing documents. when using Justify alignmen. any ideas ?Hi, and welcome to the forum.  Are you referring to Microsoft Word in your question?  If so, what version? yes office 2003  Could be corrupted or unsuitable printer driver. Check that you are using the latest version, correct, manufacturers printer driver, especially that it is not an MS generic driver. This problem is known to happen with HP printers where the printer driver is one that came with Windows.

I see nothing unusual here.  What you see is what Justify alignment is supposed to do.  If you don't what your print output to look that way, then don't use Justify alignment.  Am I missing the point here? Quote from: soybean

It is more usual to add the spaces between the words. Spa ces in the mi dd le of wo  rds, as the OP me ntion ed, (and as you have quoted) looks kind of weird.
OK, I KINDA overlooked that point. But, yeah, if it's putting spaces within words, not just between words, that would be messy.  It should not be doing that.  Like I said, could be a driver problem
i have tried a fresh driver INSTALL and no improvement but thanks anyway i have just uninstalled office and reinstalled as a work AROUND and will keep looking for answers thanks for taking TIME to answer.http://www.openoffice.org/

Solve : Anybody know of a good music making software for windows??

Answer»

Hey guys,
I have a compaq laptop with Windows7 and I was wondering if anybody knows of a good music MAKING software similar to Garageband on Macs. It should be easy to USE (not too complicated) and it should work with WINDOWS 7 (64-bit if that matters ).
The price doesn't really matter. It can be free or expensive - i don't care. I should just be able to make good music with it.
P.S.
I'm not some "pro" at music making (in fact, this is my first time using such software [except for garageband]), so please make sure that it is (very) simple to use.
I like FruityLoops Studio myself. FruityLoops?
Is it free? Or do I have to buy it?
And is it a pretty large program?
thxAcid Pro is quite good. I think version 4 was the best and easiest one (while it was still made by Sonic Foundry). Sony got a hold of it from version 5 ONWARDS (now at version 7) and has ruined it in my opinion. I still use Acid Pro 4 for recording guitar and vocals, making drum tracks, and remixing songs (which it is excellent for).

Cakewalk is another good program. Not as easy as Acid Pro 4 (for me anyway), but still good and versatile.

I've heard many good things about FruityLoops, but never tried it.

None of those programs are free, but I believe there are trials for all of them if you want to try them out. Different programs will work well for different things though. Is there something in particular you're looking for? Can make a better recommendation that way.

Audacity is also a good program, and it's free. It's not as good as the pay programs, but it works well for a lot of people who just want to mess around. It's worth taking a look at. Quote from: gagan9514 on December 22, 2009, 07:07:08 PM

FruityLoops?

It's not free, usually runs up quite a lot. I think there are free music sequencing apps like it available, but I'm not sure if there are any free ones. (unless you count the quaint little apps that let you bang about on an on-screen piano keyboard using MIDI)

It's definitely comprehensive, there's a demo on their HOMEPAGE you could try:

http://flstudio.image-line.com/

And of course, there are WAVE type sound editors. Not really good for making music, but they have their uses. I used to use one called GoldWave, it used to be free, but I don't think it is anymore. I usually reach for Audacity when I need to edit waveform sound files. Quote from: BC_Programmer on December 22, 2009, 07:24:33 PM

Audacity will also do MP3 with the Lame-MP3 codec which I believe is also available on their website (or at least a link to it). Thanks for the reply guys. I already have audacity and i just use it for trimming music and stuff.
And I think I'll try the Acid Pro one. Might give Fruity Loops a try as well.

yes... but Mp3 is just a compressed format for digital waveform sound, which is kinda what I meant, Audacity can open all sorts of different formats, but they are really all just some sort of waveform, either compressed (mp3, ogg, flac, voc) or uncompressed (riff/wav/aiff) Flstudio and so forth are full fledged sequence composition programs- (not sure about the others mentioned... they probably are as well, at least to some degree. And on the more high-end scale, Adobe Soundbooth.I think he wants something with a bunch of different instruments in it and stuff.  Soundbooth doesnt have that.  Its an editor Quote

Look at it this way; what they want is a "vector" audio program; that sounds like it's a "raster" audio program.

One works with instruments, tempo, etc. the other works with the pure waveform.

I don't know which one the adobe program is. Sounds like both, actually.Adobe makes Audition...i probably should have mentioned that.

Solve : Icon in control panel?

Answer»

Hello, I am using Windows XP Home, SP3. I just installed Avira A/V and the icon in the control PANEL is a generic icon and not the Avira icon. I have tried moving it to my Sys32 FOLDER but that just makes it disappear from the control panel, it doesn't affect the operation of the program but it agitates me because it should be the Avira icon. If anyone has experienced this and knows how to correct it I would appreciate any help. Thank you.

http://viewmorepics.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=viewImage&friendID=489069936&albumID=1008859&imageID=10364743try uninstalling it and then reinstall it sometimes programs get weird.brett, I've installed and reinstalled it approximately 5 times. Frustration is taking control of me. Thank you. If it really bothers you just remove the item from Control Panel....or try a different AV like AVG or avast!. Neither of these have annoying nag-screens.Not sure why Avira would even need to place an icon in Control Panel to begin with...course i have'nt played with it in about a year or so.

I'll give it a ride on my benchtest machine. Some programs offer the option to add an icon in control panel - but I agree with patio - not sure why an AV would do that. After 6 installs and reinstalls and by using Wise Registry Cleaner (a great and simple program) I have fixed the problem. I am very joyful.

Somehow it SEEMS that registry cleaners are now doing "better" than they used to.I added WISE registry cleaner to my list of cleaners to perform my controlled experiment on.And your controlled experiment is what exactly? Quote from: kpac on December 24, 2009, 04:43:24 AM

And your controlled experiment is what exactly?

A secret. actually, it was a plan for a blog entry. I already have the VM sort of set up, just have to be bothered to actually perform the experiments with my XP snapshot.

The idea is this: I create a setup with a Clean XP Install, and test several "registry cleaners" on it; after each one, I revert to the snapshot I took of the clean install, and try another.

I also have a "loaded" system, where I uninstalled, reinstalled, deleted without uninstalling, added back new versions, deleted old versions, and basically tried to muck around the Install as much as I could to "simulate" what might happen over a longer period. Again; each time I will test the cleaner/fixer TOOL, and then revert to the snapshop I made of this "loaded" XP install.

For each one, I use Process Monitor to determine exactly what the cleaner is doing; most illegitimate ones (one on my list being RegCure) will likely show that they hardly access any registry keys at all and simply report specific keys as invalid using a time delay.

Additionally, I'll ensure that the programs installed work properly- in all respects- after running the cleaner.Nice... Quote from: bxgy on December 23, 2009, 05:26:35 AM

When do you think the results of your experiment will be posted and where can we find them, I would enjoy reading what your findings were.

Solve : Problem printing on to CD's.?

Answer»

I used to have an Epson R300. Printed onto Cd's no bother and included an extensive editing programme (Epson Print CD). It's now broken so I bought a new printer. HP Photosmart Premium C309a all in one. It comes with the software Photoshop 3.5, which is absolutely terrible. It will print a PICTURE with a text. The text can only be black, in bold or ITALICS. It cannot be moved, nor manipulated. There is no choice of font. Even the picture cannot be altered in any way. In short there is no editing facility whatsoever.
I have mailed HP who have been no HELP at all, saying "There is no editing facility." Can anyone help me to find a CD editing programme that will work with my HP Photosmart Premium. The Epson programme will print to CD but the HP prints it as though it's on an A4 sheet. I can't MOVE the design on Epson and I can't copy it to Jpeg. Either of these options would do the trick. I'm STUCK!! Please help.
I'm running Windows XP, service pack 2.
Many thanks.

Solve : How do I increase server timeout in Microsoft Outlook?

Answer»

When I send large attachments, Microsoft Outlook TIMES out and the email is not sent. I changed the server timeout to the max of 5 minutes in Tools > Accounts >Properties > Advanced > Server timeout but I need more than 5 minutes.Time and again, this point needs clarification.  Is it Outlook or Outlook Express?  I'm sure I know the answer, but it needs to come from you.

What type of Internet service do you have?  What's its rated speed?  How large are these attachments?  What type of file are they?Soybean i'd venture to say you have had to ask that question more times than Broni has posted...

It seems so.    I think I need your pulling-tooth image.   I have to brush it first...and maybe re-size it and it's all yours... I am using Outlook as indicated in my original post. I am on DSL Extreme. Speakeasy indicates my actual speed to be 6.5Mbps Download and 434 kbps upload. The attachments are usually anything over 9 Mb and are wmv or pps. I already insreased the server timeout to Outlook's max of 5 minutes. 5 minutes is not long enough. Quote from: cojack on December 18, 2009, 01:13:47 PM

Your description here fits Outlook Express.  Outlook does not have that menu sequence. You need to review your Terms of Service with your ISP...
Most have a limit and/or throttle down large attachments...

What are you sending that's 9MG ? ? Quote from: cojack on December 18, 2009, 03:57:17 PM
5 minutes is not long enough.
I don't believe that setting pertains to this situation anyway.  The setting relates to how long OE will TRY to connect to the server before it quits due to not having established a connection.  But, once a connection is established, OE won't interrupt the connection due to a large file taking a long time to upload.

Quote from: patio on December 18, 2009, 07:05:38 PM

Yes, this is this is the string for Outlook and OE has the same string.  Believe me. I have the same problem with OE.

I've already worked with my ISP and there are no retrictions as to the size of files to download.

When I send a large attachment, it indicates it is being sent, if it is not complete at the 5 minute mark it aborts. I am still online in outlook and can send other emails of smaller content but I need to delete anything that is larger than 9 Mb from the outbox. I can send them in Webmail but I receive my email in Outlook but when downloaded, it is removed from the server and doesn't appear on my webmail.

I'm forwarding emails with large attachments 9 or 10 Mb, that were sent to me by friends that are on the same ISP. I assume they are sending them using webmail or another email client that doesn't have any server timeout restrictions. Then check your other scheduled apps such as A/V programs to see what's triggering an interruption... Quote from: cojack on December 18, 2009, 08:58:01 PM
Yes, this is this is the string for Outlook and OE has the same string.
No, they don't. I have both and the menu STRUCTURE is not the same in the two apps.  The setting exists in both but the menu route to it is different.

Quote from: cojack on December 18, 2009, 08:58:01 PM

Incoming mail disappears from webmail once downloaded unless you have your email client (Outlook or Outlook Express) set to leave messages on the server.  However, outgoing messages sent via webmail WOULD remain in the online Sent folder until you delete them via access to your webmail interface.
I don't know what version of MS Outlook you are using but my version 2000 has the same string as OE.

I don't want to leave copies of my emails on the server and get these files rarely, maybe once every couple months.

I'm not sure if Thunderbird has any restrictions but I don't care for Thunderbird. I also us Mailwasher Pro to receive my email from the server before it gets into my PC so I get no spam and my PC runs really clean! I guess one solution would be to see if any of my emails are 9 Mb in Mailwasher before I send them to Outlook. If there are any, I can read my email in webmail and send that large attachment there. I don't like to do that because I have several email address groups set up in Outlook and I would have to add email addresses individually.

Solve : Excel if/then formulas?

I would like to create a spreadsheet that uses a formula that recognizes a word in one column to add avalue to another column. Can anyone help?Hang in there some one will help. It's over my head  Your question is skimpy on details?  Can you ELABORATE, maybe GIVE an example?Yes,
If you look below and imagine it is an Excel spreadsheet, I would like for the formula to see if column 1 contains the word crane or runway I would like for VALUE 24 (for runway) and 4 (for crane) to be automatically added to column C.

  A                            B               C              D              E              F
Descpition          Qty           HRS Per     Total Hrs   Rate       Total
 1 38' runway   2   24   48   70   3360
 2 20' span crane   1   4   4   70   280
It didn't post exactly the way it previewed. If you add spaces to the values to line them up with the letters across the top it will make more sense.Try it with this formula in column C.

Code: [Select]=IF(NOT(ISERROR(SEARCH("runway",A2,1))),24,IF(NOT(ISERROR(SEARCH("crane",A2,1))),4,""))trusky, where do you stand on this now?  Was the formula posted by oldun HELPFUL?  I was thinking the VLOOKUP function is what you need.

Solve : String formula in Excel 2003?

Answer»

Hi
My Op syst is Win Xp and Office 2003
I need help with the following cenario

To test a a cell and return a VALUE if true by using IF, ELSE statements is LIMITING TO 7 IF,ELSE STATEMENTS and values tested can be either numerical and/or text, ie. If(A6="LHR"),"HEATHROW",IF?(A6="ATL"),"ATLANTA",IF ...
I do use this method which allows up to 250 statements in a single string =(A6=>2)*(RETURN A NUMERICAL SATEMENT)+(...

This is very effeftive, but i need to test and return "TEXT" as below ....  =(A6=LHR)*(HEATHROW)+(A6=ATL)*(ATLANTA)+(...

Is this possible and can somebody help

  A   B     C
1     LHR HEATHROW
2    ATL ATLANTA
3     HRE HARARE
4     LUN LUSAKA
5    YYC CALGARY

Can you please explain in more details what exactly you are TRYING to achieve?

This formula:
Code: [Select]If(A6="LHR"),"HEATHROW",IF?(A6="ATL"),"ATLANTA",IF ...
will display "HEATHROW" or "ATLANTA" etc depending on the text in column A.

I do not understand the following statements/formulae.

Quote

=(A6=>2)*(RETURN A NUMERICAL SATEMENT)+(...

This is very effeftive, but i need to test and return "TEXT" as below ....  =(A6=LHR)*(HEATHROW)+(A6=ATL)*(ATLANTA)+(...

Many thks for yr interest, hope this will shed more light on what i am trying to achieve.

By ENTERING a value in cell a1, for example "ATL" then i want to display in cell b1 the full name of the entered abbreviation i.e. "Atlanta"

When you use the IF, Else Formulae statements this is a breeze as IF,Else statements can display/return either a numerical value/calculation or text (as in my requirement, but this string is limited to seven enclosed if,else statements

My situation calls for (14) fourteen different abbreviations that need to return a full name, so I cannot use the if,else method

another way of doing this allowing up to 250 scenarios is showed/explained in the below example

instead of the standard if,else which will look like this =If(A1="a",1,If(A1="b",2,if(A1="c",3,if .... will only allow (7) seven ifs in one string,
but this method =(A1="a")*(1)+(A1="b")*(2)+(A1="c")*(3)+(A1="d")*(4) where "="represents the same as "if" and the"*"represents "then" if true or the "+" represents "else" ....
caters for a total of 250 statements in one string.  However my problem is that instead of displaying/returning a numerical number ... 1,2,3,4, as shown, i need to display/return text or a name like this ... =(A1="atl")*(Atlanta)+(A1="lhr")*(Heathrow)+ ..... but the statement display/return a ... #VALUE! error because of the text"atlanta"

Can i, and how, do i get this to work

I believe the VLookup Function is a solution for you. Here's a reference: http://www.contextures.com/xlFunctions02.html.  Many others can be found by doing a Google search on vlookup function in excel.

From your remarks it seems that you are able to hear things coming from your loudspeakers, but your MICROPHONE does not seem to be working. Some MICROPHONES have a switch, sometimes called a cough switch, which allowed to turn the microphone off so you can cough.
also, can you provide US with the name and model of your computer? And what software are you using to try to talk to other people?

Simply, just burn?
I am not clear what the OP wants to do. To make the disk, that an 8GB ISO is the image of, REQUIRES a dual layer disk. To store the ISO as data on a number of dvd5 disks is a different thing. So is extracting the data files from the ISO and burning them to separate disks. What kind of ISO is it? If it is a DVD9 movie you can use a program like DVDShrink.

No, its an ISO of PC DVD Games. You're not going selling them I hope.Excuse me, how do I burn my downloaded pirated game onto a DVD?

Would have to be very old; my LG burner I got over 5 years ago supports them. Anyhow he says

dual layer still expensive for me

Between 60 and 70 Cents apiece here.... My LG burner would always THROW a failed burn when it got to the layer break with every brand except Verbatim which are still not very cheap. Around 1 UK pound if you buy them in 10 packs, that's around $1.65 in US money. Considering I can get single layers DISCS in any supermarket for around a quarter the price, I don't really have much use for DL.

The only thing i use them for is to burn my Monthly Acronis disk images...as the files have long since crept over the 4G mark...I use Paragon Disk Manager & split them to 4 G; my Windows partition is around 20 G

Solve : Programs randomly lose/gain focus?

Answer»

Hello! Long time reader, first time poster here.

I'm normally experienced enough to take care of issues myself, however this problem has left me running in circles. Since this morning's bootup, I've seen my windows randomly lose focus- For example, Firefox here has been DESELECTED once and I have to turn the focus back here to be able to actually post. It does this with all software I've run, including Steam, MSN, etc, etc.
When I'm running a fullscreen application, the program is minimized to the task bar, similar to how it does when you press alt+tab to minimize it, only I didn't press alt+tab. The game doesn't freeze, I can just click it in the task bar and I can continue playing, but this is getting increasingly annoying.

I've done alot of searching around on my own and have seen people solve this problem in various ways but none of the solutions I've seen so far helped me. I've been through countless guides to clean my computer up of malware and spent several hours waiting for scans to complete, and as far as I can tell, my computer is as clean as I can get it to be.

As far as I'm aware, there was no software change and there was definately no hardware change.
The most recent thing I would SUSPECT would be doing a windows update about three, maybe four days ago?

I'm aware this can be caused by many, many things but eh.. Worth asking anyways.See if TweakUI helps - once you install it click on GENERAL - then FOCUSNope. The setting was enabled, so just in case I disabled it and applied settings, the reenabled it and applied again. I just spent a good 20 minutes playing Left 4 Dead and waiting to see if it would still minimize, which it did when I was starting to think it had worked. Does this mean XP is not the culprit?Don't know for sure. Just to completely rule out malware, why not post a hijack this log in the malware forum?Maybe there is hope yet. I googled once more, using different words to get different hits. This time I found one who had a similar issue on Microsoft's support site. Someone had replied with, amongst the few solutions, a tool that logs the foreground window. So I started the tool and went to play the Left 4 Dead 2 demo yet again. After about 20 minutes, BAM. Tool has logged what looks to be some kind of virus. So I'ma go ahead and post a HijackThis log soon.

I took a screenshot of the logger and what it said to clarify, just because I feel kinda victorious. Finally, after 10 hours of trying to figure out what it is, I finally have a clue. |D

Above the selected line you can see how Left 4 Dead 2's demo takes the focus, and I play it for a bit. Then, according to the tool, something launches a 'Web Browser' with the 'visible' property at 'no'. Directly under the selected line is ANOTHER very peculiar line. Then I put the L4D2 window back in focus, quit it and go to work at posting here.

The thing is, if it is malware, then it must be either very hard to detect or relatively new. I spent 3-4 hours today with antimalware guides. Everything from updating what I have and scanning and downloading other programs one at a time and letting them scan one at a time. Everything I tried had no results.

Either way, this looks like malware, so I'ma mosey on down and get a HijackThis log and stuff.

[Saving space, attachment deleted by admin]for elimination I usually do virus and malware scan everytime I feel something is not right to my rig.
vast, malwarebytes and ccleaner is my combination.

until now it never failed me, specially avast.

or you MAY update and scan your system with your antivirus.
good luck I hope it helps. Quote from: asaguda on November 12, 2009, 12:19:16 PM

Hi,

I have exactly the same problem. Any luck finding a solution?I think I found a solution. Haven't RESTARTED yet, but thought I'd just post it before I forgot.

http://forums.avg.com/cz-en/avg-free-forum?sec=thread&act=show&id=41015#post_41015Hi, I solved it on XP:

I had the same problem and some more:
- Programs losing focus because of malware
- Many anti-virus programs being blocked (looks like they've been uninstalled)
- I was unable to successfully install software onto my PC like other virus scanners.

I scoured the internet looking for solutions. I spent tedious hours, searching and trying different approaches. I found the Internet Explorer window which opens invisibly every 10 or so seconds, but after that it was back to searching for solutions. I came across a set of programs I was able to install and run on my pc. These come from Trend Micro. The program I used was RootkitBuster. The link is here: http://free.antivirus.com/rootkit-buster/.

Install and run it on your PC, then take the following steps:
- Click the scan now button
- Click delete selected items.
- Let your system restart.
- Once you're back on windows wait for your virus scanner to open or open it yourself
- Run a scan.

In my case everything was back to normal apart from my internet connection. After restarting the PC and having windows install updates everything was sorted.

This was my encounter, not sure if it works for everyone but it might be worth the try. good luck ^^

Solve : Backup discs w/Vista?

Answer»

As some of you may have seen my problem in the heading of Windows Mail, an antivirus program I downloaded changed some settings, specifically the password command page which left me no access to my computer as I had never put a password in. To make a long story short, Vista was uninstalled and reinstalled and in the process my husband's music got lost. There are folders that say they HOLD x AMOUNT of music, but I can never open it.  Before this all happened, I had started a backup of the computer, but ran out of discs, and I NOTICED it was BACKING up music at the time. If I put one of the discs in CD/DVD player, will it put his music back?  Or EXACTLY what does happen if I put the first backup disc in?  Thanks in advance!

Solve : I'm trying to make some DVD's...?

Answer»

My dd has a VIDEO Now player. I got some software and blank discs with it. You're supposed to be able to put cartoons onto the blank discs.

My question is how? It won't let me use any of the DVD's I have here at home b/c they are copyrighted so where do you find some that aren't? Or am I doing something wrong? Honestly, I have no clue what you're trying to do.
What's "dd" anyway?Trying to make backups of DVD's  you own to blank discs and it's not working? If they're copyrighted, you can't (legally). Quote from: Broni on December 15, 2009, 10:25:21 PM

I believe that it's not the copying (there is such a thing as "fair use" in US copyright law) that is illegal in the USA, but the circumvention of DVD ENCRYPTION.
You're right and we're here in gray area: http://www.wired.com/threatlevel/2009/08/judge-copying-dvds-is-illegal/
At least in US. I believe, I've read somewhere, that copying DVDs for own use was declared legal, by some judge in Canada.

Quote
SAN FRANCISCO — A federal judge ruled here late Tuesday that it was unlawful to traffic in goods to copy DVDs.

U.S. District Judge Marilyn Hall Patel’s ruling came in a decision in which she declared RealNetworks’ DVD copying software was illegal. She barred it from being distributed.

Patel said the RealDVD software violates the Digital Millennium Copyright Act of 1998 that prohibits the circumvention of encryption technology. DVDs are encrypted with what is known as the Content Scramble System, and DVD players must secure a license to play discs. RealDVD, she ruled, circumvents technology designed to prevent copying.

But the decision, although mixed, left open the door that copying DVD’s for personal use “MAY well be” lawful under the fair use doctrine of the Copyright Act, although trafficking in such goods was illegal.

Because RealDVD makes a permanent copy of copyrighted DVD content, there is no exemption from DMCA liability, statutory or otherwise, that applies here. Whatever application the fair use doctrine may have for individual consumers making backup copies of their own DVDs, it does not portend to save Real from liability under the DMCA in this action,” Patel wrote (.pdf) in a lawsuit brought by Hollywood.

However, she stopped short of sanctioning personal use copies, and gave a conflicting message on whether it was legal. “So while it may well be fair use for an individual consumer to store a backup copy of a personally owned DVD on that individual’s computer, a federal law has nonetheless made it illegal to manufacture or traffic in a device or tool that permits a consumer to make such copies,” Patel said. She added, “fair use can never be an affirmative defense to the act of gaining unauthorized access” — a simple WAY of saying it was illegal to hack into the encryption to make a copy.

“These seem to be contradicting points,” said Fred von Lohmann, a copyright attorney for the Electronic Frontier Foundation, a civil liberties group based in San Francisco.

The decision, minus the fair use language, mirrored the 2004 decision by another federal judge declaring as illegal DVD copying software from 321 Studios. The difference was that RealNetworks secured a Content Scramble System license, and claimed a loophole in the license allowed its RealDVD software to make hard-drive or thumb-drive backup copies of movies.

Often on while using the computer, I keep getting a box that says this:

and then there is a button to press that says
"OK"
which makes the box go off after I press it.

Any ideas on how to determine what file this is that the computer is trying to load?

Thanks,

Does it happen when running any specific program or performing a specific task? You might find out what program is causing the problem.

Download and unzip [extract] the program called Process Explorer.
The next time you see the mysterious message, run Process Explorer [It runs without needing to be INSTALLED.] When it opens it will show a long, complicated list of processes and services running on your computer; ignore that for now and just look in the menu bar for an icon that looks like a “bull’s eye”.

Drag and drop that icon onto the mysterious message window.  Process Explorer will then highlight [in dark blue with white letters] the name of the associated program in its list. This will not tell you which file is missing, but at least it will tell you what program created the message. You could them try updating or reinstalling that program.

An alternative method to this is to tell us what program your using when this error messagebox appears and what the title text is. I'm using all the programs that are needed for a computer to function.
Windows XP is the operating system.
Bellsouth which I think is now AT&t even though our email address still has bellsouth after the at symbol, is our ISP. So, the stuff that is needed for the INTERNET to run I guess you would say is running CONSTANTLY ever since we got DSL.

So, like if you hit ctrl, alt, delete and bring up the Windows Task Manager, for Processes it says 49.

When you say title text, do you mean what is listed in the title bar?
I guess it would be Oops that is listed since it says
"Oops......
I am sorry, we had trouble loading a required file.
Please try again."

So, since Oops is the very 1st thing, I guess that would be the title.

What program shows the error message ? ?Malware?Just had this come up
Adobe Flash Player 10
A script in this movie is causing Adobe Flash Player 10 to run slowly. If it continues to run, your computer may become unresponsive. Do you want to abort the script?

I don't know what movie it is talking about. I wasn't even watching a movie.
Then there are 2 options YES or No.
If I hit yes, it closes the browser out. Then if I hit No, the message keeps coming up.

I did just that.
I'm not sure, if I like it better, than ver. 2I have to tell you....after running it for 1 day, I gave back and I went back to ver. 2.

Couple of reasons:
1. No matter what I tried, it wouldn't connect to Gmail POP server.
2. Several of my add-ons wouldn't work, even with Mr. Tech Toolkit installed.
3. I didn't like expanded message header, which is not shrinkable. Actually, there is an add-on, which apparently will do it, but I discovered it after I uninstalled ver. 3.In Server settings are you using port 995 and SSL for the POP settings ? ?
Because the DEFAULTS don't work here...Yep, 995...SSL ? ?Sure thing
Is your Gmail working?
How about add-ons?Works fine here...not many addons and only a few of my favorite Themes...Not sure, what's going on here, then.
I'll wait a little and WATCH Google for TB3 problems. Not too many hits there yet.

Solve : Microsoft Access Database Viewer?

Answer»

Hey everyone,

I've created a database for work that will let us keep TRACK of items that have been returned and what we replaced them with, etc. I need to find a viewer that will allow other users to be able to view and edit this database without having Access installed on their PC. I USED MS Access to CREATE the database but we don't have enough licenses to go around. I found something called MDB Viewer which I put on my own PC to test and it works fine. I'm running Windows Vista and I tried putting it on another PC that is running XP and I can't get it to work. Does anyone know of any good/free Access database viewers that would allow end users to view and edit the database? The ONE I have actually automatically updates the Access database once changes have been made using the MDB Viewer. But like I said it only works on my PC. The PC specs that I cannot get it to work on are:

P4 2.8 GHz
XP Pro
2 GB RAM
40GB HDD

My PC's specs are:

P4 3.2GHz
Vista Business
2GB RAM
80GB HDD

Any ideas? Thanks!I know that are viewers that let you view an Access database, but I'm not aware of any that also allow editing of the database.  What viewer is this?

I suggest you try OpenOffice.org, specifically the Base database component of it.  I believe it will open an MS Access database and would also provide editing capability. Thanks Soybean. Openoffice was actually my first thought but I didn't want to have to download that on everyone's PC that will be needing to view this database. I was trying to look for something a little more space-saving. The one I found was called MDBviewer Plus I believe. But it would actually let end users edit the database. I'm afraid Openoffice might be my only choice if I can't find a way to get the other one working on the XP PC. Thanks for your help.Access 2007 runtime is available directly from Microsoft free of charge. It can read older versions of Access as well.  The user cannot modify table structures, create NEW queries, ..., but viewing and editing the data is permitted.

No.

You can borrow an XP CD of the exact same version you have installed and try a repair installation (it is perfectly legal to do this). Boot to the CD and choose the second repair OPTION, allowing XP to install on top of itself. All programs and settings will remain intact. You will have to go to MICROSOFT UPDATE and install all updates after doing the repair.

NOTE: You cannot use the borrowed cd to do a new or clean install - only the repair install.i did borrowed a XP CD from my dad and installed it on my computer and now i got THINGS in order and it doesn't goes on and off...thanks Allan...
but i still have to fix it and order the acer recovery cd.....

Solve : Software onto a memory stick?

Answer»

My girlfriends computer I just recently resetted to FACTORY settings and we are having problems installing her printer, we have the installation disk but when we put it in I doesn't do anything and when I run the disk an empty window appears. I have also looked online for online installation but with it being an old printer it doesn't get much attention and there is no software I could find.
My question is could I put the installation software ONTO a memory stick from my computer, TAKE the memory stick to her computer, then install it. Her computer can read memory sticks because I have tested it but I'm wondering if its possible and if so, how do I do it?. Thanks xYou surely can.
Copy entire CD to USB stick and look for some file called "setup.exe", or "install.exe".

Make sure to install printer software BEFORE connecting printer to the computer. That is if the CD for a printer this old has a setups, might as well just have the drivers. Still - copy an enteir CD on your flash drive(or memory stick if it has a card reader) and in case ther is no intallation file use windows device search to manually install the drivers - in this case the printer can be connected before installing but you might require to reboot afterwards Quote from: nathan_s on December 02, 2009, 03:43:25 AM

That is if the CD for a printer this old has a setups, might as well just have the drivers.

there were setup programs on the floppy disk installs of almost all printers. CDs are a lot newer, and at the very least they all have an autorun program that deploys the driver, which can be run manually.

Also, there is always the possibility of simply DOWNLOADING the latest driver, too. Thanks guys, ill try that today if my girlfriend can find the *censored* memory stick lol thanks everyone x Quote from: crog13 on December 02, 2009, 08:19:21 AM

Like BC was saying, you can just download the driver from the manufacturer, eliminating the need for the CD or a memory stick.

If you can tell us the model of printer as well as what version of OS she's using, we can direct you where to download it from.drop the model herefemale model?

Solve : IMAP Mailbox - Outlook 2003?

Answer»

So I've been using Outlook 2003 to access my AOL (IMAP) for years.

Computer DIED - I saved my "Application Data - MSFT - Outlook" directory and LOADED onto new computer.

However, my "Sent Items" archive is not in there. Outlook HAD kept a copy of every message I'd sent over the last three years. (AOL does NOT keep a copy).

I did a search for *.PST (which is what I remember from my Outlook Express days) - nothin'.

Before IT erases my old machine, any idea what file(s) may have that info stored? Thanks!

rjbThe default file for all Outlook items is Outlook.pstThere are no files on the machine with the extension .pst

Outlook Express does not use .PST; it stores messages in .dbx files.

Which are like sands through the hourglass. (And I guess I remembered the wrong thing).

I booted the machine in Linux and copied the entire "Application Data" folder from the old machine onto a disc and copied that onto my new machine.

So, again:

IMAP
Outlook 2003
Win XP
...name and location of the archive?

ThanksRead this: Where is my Outlook "PST" file located?Awesome. The LINK totally solved it.

It's in "Local Settings" not "Application Data".

What's weird is - it STILL doesn't show up on "Search", but if I go to that folder, it's there. Must be something tricky with IMAP - a hidden character or something?
