Solve : ive deleted the wpa.dbl file and need to re-install it?

Answer»

so this was a stupid mistake i made but it hapend, anyways how to i reinstall it.http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,2845,1151566,00.asp

WPA.DBL--The Keeper of the Keys

The WPA.DBL file resides in the Windows\system32 directory and holds the hardware configuration information and activation state of the current Windows XP installation. The WPA.DBL file is actually an RC4-encrypted database of the expiration info of your installation, the confirmation of activation, the hardware configuration at activation time, and the current hardware configuration. When you first install Windows XP, this file is approximately 2K in size--not MUCH more than a stub file. When you activate Windows, this file grows to approximately 12K-13K, recording the hardware STATUS of your machine. At each boot, Windows analyzes your current hardware and compares it to the stored configuration information to see if it has changed. When you make hardware changes, Windows makes a note of the changes in the WPA file, but keeps the original configuration for reference. If you make too many changes, Windows XP will reset the WPA.DBL file back to its original non-activated (2K file size) state, and you have to reactivate.

As mentioned above, the WPA.DBL file can be backed up to permit activation if you reload Windows XP. You can also experiment with different hardware configurations, as we did in preparation for this article. You would back up WPA.DBL for each configuration change, so you can roll back WHENEVER desired, similar to what developers may do frequently, as mentioned above. If you save a copy of the WPA.DBL file at each change of hardware, you can roll back to almost any state.

One caveat, from our testing--we found that the WPA.DBL was not protected similar to other system files. If you delete the file, you need to reactivate. The WPA.DBL is also not included in Windows XP's system restore mechanism. so how do i re-activate it if i have no product key? Quote from: arkbound on January 16, 2010, 12:24:26 PM

so how do i re-activate it if i have no product key?

And why is that?Right....because i lost the paper that had it.Then, you'll have to call Microsoft, explain the situation, and if your Windows version is genuine and it was activated before, they'll issue you new license.thanks broni you've been a big help.umm one more thing, where do i contact microsoft for this problem, because i went to their support page and it said it was going to cost me $56 just to contact them by phone, so i dont know if i went to the right place. As LONG as you get live person on the phone, explain the situation and no CHARGES should be applied.

Solve : laptop cooling fan?

Answer»

any one know of a good cooling fan for my laptop, do they work? my laptop cooling fan is always running in the backgroundI just got a cooler about 10 days ago. Yes, it helps. The fan in my laptop runs much less often now. The one I bought is EVERCOOL Aluminum Notebook Cooling Pad Model NP-301, from newegg.com. You can see their entire selection here.

Since this is my first experience with a laptop cooler, I had a hard time deciding which one to get. These coolers have anywhere 1 to 4 fans. The one I bought has 2 fans. It's a bit louder than I expected, based on user REVIEWS I READ on newegg.com. I saw numerous comments about it being quiet. So, maybe my expectation on that point was unrealistic. Otherwise, I fairly pleased with it. I like the fact that it has 2 USB ports on the left side. One of them must be connected to the laptop, since the fans get their power from a USB port. I was CONCERNED about having to use a USB port on my laptop to power a cooler since it only has 3 ports. But, the second port on the cooler can be used for other devices, so, in effect, I still have 3 ports available for devices other than the cooler.

I was just looking at the selection on newegg.com again. If the USB ports issue I EXPLAINED above is not an issue, here's a good deal: Rosewill 7"-14.1" Black Notebook Cooling Pad Model RNA-3000. With the free shipping offer now in effect, you can get it for only $20. Take a look at user reviews; they might help you make a decision.

Solve : Trying to debug an assertion error....have no idea what I'm doing!?

Answer» HI,

Recently a game on my computer stopped working (WITHIN the past 3 days). It loads almost all the way, then it says "ASSERTION Failed" and something about a visual c++ error. When I hit "debug", NOTHING happens and the game shuts down.

I tried a "hijack this" log, but I don't know what to delete or fix. I don't know anything about the technical side of computers (codes and all that), so if someone could help me I WOULD greatly appreciate it

Solve : Opening a picture in "my pictures"?

Answer»

I have a great variety and number of pictures in "my pictures". About 50% of them i can OPEN by just "double clicking" on the thumbnail. However in all the other pictures (file type ="file" ) i must go through the "open with " command. There is only ONE in the list that will in fact always open all these pictures. It is "Windows Picture and Fax Viewer". The option to "always use the selected program to open this type of file" is always greyed out and cannot be implemented. Is there some way i can gain access to the "Always-----" option or alternatively (very distant 2ND choice) convert the pictures to another format such as JPEG and be able to view it as i do with the other 50%? truenorth
O/S= Win Xp Pro Quote from: truenorth on January 17, 2010, 10:21:03 AM

However in all the other pictures (file type ="file" )
"file" is not a file type.Soybean, Well that it what is displayed in the "properties" (in type of file) of the thumbnail of the RELEVANT pictures i have noted. truenorthWhat do you believe is the correct format for those files showing "file" as the file type? As a test, SELECT one of those files and try simply changing the file extension by changing the file name via Windows Explorer. For example, if you think the file is truly a JPEG, change file name to reflect that. Then, see whether it will open the same way of other JPEG images. soybean, I am not sure if i have done what you wanted me to do. This is what i did. I opened "my pictures" which is an explorer window. Then i selected one of the relevant pictures and "renamed it from "waves" to "waves jpeg". It made no difference it remained as a "file" in file type and would still only open with the previously identified program. I had composed a CH reply to you wherein i tried to send you the "waves jpeg" ( thought that it was likely a jpeg as they are all under 100 kb's). However when i included the attachment and then tried to send it it came back with an error that only certain types of files can be attached and jpeg was one of them. So that it would not attach it i cannot imagine what it is as most common file types are available to be attached.truenorth Quote
Then i selected one of the relevant pictures and "renamed it from "waves" to "waves jpeg".
That's not what I suggested. I suggested waves.jpeg. Change the file extension, not the main filename.soybean, After your counsel with further research i found the following link
http://ask-leo.com/what_does_if_you_change_a_file_name_extension_the_file_may_become_unusable_mean.html
I strongly suspect this is where you were trying to lead me. I followed the instructions to the letter in this link (excellent by the way) including the unchecking the "hide files" recommendation. I opted for changing the file extension (from heaven knows what) to .jpg. In every case they are now thumbnails exactly as the others and now open without involving "open with". Your assistance and guidance is much appreciated, thank you, truenorthGlad to hear problem resolved.

Solve : right clicking on a file on my desktop hangs up my computer?

Answer»

The hour glass just sits there and I have to reboot. I have SCANNED for malware and viruses and nothing bad comes up. I have Windows XP. Any help would be VERY appreciated!

Thanks!Any icon or just one? Thanks for the quick response Allan. I cannot right click on a folder or a single file without hanging up. I believe that menu that normally comes up when you right click is called a Context Menu (I'm trying!) and that does not even come up.

-CindyDoes this only happen with desktop icons or does it also happen within Windows Explorer?

Did this just start? If so, what is new since the last time it worked properly (new hw, sw, error, virus, etc)? The only new software installed was Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware program. It did detect a couple of viruses. I have pasted in the log below. I have run the scan a couple more times and it has not found anything else. My computer also hangs up when right CLICKING a file in Windows Explorer.

Solve : Accidentally Deleted userinit.exe cant login?

Answer»

hi i was doing a scan using spybot for my brothers computer and i deleted all the harmful things it found so when i restarted the computer it wouldn't let me login...it kept going from the welcome screen to the desktop screen then back to the welcome screen saying it was loading personal settings. It just keeps repeating this sequence over and over. I tried going into the recovery console so i can restore userinit.exe but its asking for admin. password and no one knows it. Is their a way around the password? or is their another way to restore the userinit.exe? You're stuck, because, you can disable recovery console password only from within Windows and userinit can be replaced only through recovery console.
You may try Windows repair: http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/How-to-repair-Windows-XP-t138.htmlNot sure how userinit. got involved in a Spybot scan to begin with...Good question...maybe some itchy fingers deleted something manually im not sure if its the userinit.exe that got deleted but when i was reading about other peoples computer issues they were similar to mine thats why i think it might be the issue. i was trying a few different things people were suggesting but i couldnt figure out how to burn an image to a cd disk properly so im stuck at that step i was at. not sure what else to do. i tried following this links steps and it didnt work...i followed these steps and i burned the cd but when i put it in the computer asks for a admin password...so i looked up how to get around the password and came across this website to reset the password but i dont know how to burn the image using imgburn....the link is below.

http://pogostick.net/~pnh/ntpasswd/

You will have to create a small 'fix CD' to solve this problem.
Please download RC.ISO and save it somewhere you can find it.
Also download MagicISO and install it.

Start MagicISO. You should see a window informing you about the full version of MagicISO.
In the bottom right select Try It! and the program will open.
Click on FILE and then on Open and navigate to the RC.ISO file you downloaded. Select it, and click Open.

First, you'll need to ADD a clean version of userinit.exe to the current RC.ISO•In the upper right pane, double click on the i386 folder.
•Right click in the upper right pane and select Add Files...•Navigate to C:\Windows\System32 and select userinit.exe•Then click Open to add userinit.exe to the CD image.
•Click File and select Save As...•Name the file RCplus and save it somewhere you can find it.
Next, we'll need to burn the newly created image to a disk that we can use to fix the problem.
•Put a blank CD-R disk in your CD burner and close the tray. If an AutoPlay window opens, close it.
•Click on Tools and select Burn CD/DVD with ISO.... A window will appear.
•Click on the little folder to the right of CD/DVD Image File then navigate to the newly created RCplus.iso Image file and click Open.
•In the CD/DVD Writing Speed drop-down menu choose the 8X setting.
•Under Format MAKE sure that Mode 1 is selected.
•And finally, click on the Burn it! button to burn RCplus.iso to disk.
Once the disk is burned, put it in the machine you want to fix and RESTART it.
Boot to the CD just as you would with a Windows XP disk.
At the Welcome to Setup screen, press R to enter the Recovery Console.
Choose the installation to be repaired by number (usually 1) and press Enter.
When you are asked for the Administrator password, enter the password or leave it blank (default) and press Enter.

At the C:\Windows> prompt, type the following commands pressing Enter after each one. Note: Watch the spaces.

D:
cd i386
copy userinit.exe c:\windows\system32
exit

After putting in the third command, you should receive the message 1 file copied which will indicate that the operation succeeded.
Now take out the CD and reboot your computer to normal mode. Try to log in and it should let you back in.
He can't access recovery console, to start with.
Then, he's not even sure, if userinit is missing.so does this mean the laptop cant be fixed since i dont know the password?Did you read my advice, which I posted twice?Do you guys have a system rescue disk with a WINPE? Boot into WINPE, copy a userinit.exe from another same system to yours and paste it to your system folder. This works much the same way like the DOS floppy disk, but more powerful and simpler.
You may refer to this official article about how to make a WINPE start-up disc.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/303891yes broni i did try it but it didnt work im sorry i thought i already posted that it didnt work. Quote from: jackkent on January 11, 2010, 11:34:31 PM

rseni.I FIND your request rather absurd. If you want PIM & Accounting / Budgeting Software, why would you expect such software to include the following and some of the other components you mentioned?:

Utilities
• Wallpaper Setting
• Theme setting
• EMI Calculator
• STD/ISD Code
• Unit Conversion
• Games
• World Information

And, you want one FREE or CHEAP SOFTWARE application that does all that you listed? I think you need to get in touch with reality; your expectation is unrealistic. You need to FOCUS on functions that can be realistically be expected to be bundled together in a software package. I do not believe you're going to find any single FREE or CHEAP SOFTWARE that will do everything you listed. And, if you do find it, it will not be FREE or CHEAP. Realistically, you'll probably need several software programs to accomplish all that you want.

What version of Windows are you using? If you are using Windows Mail with Windows Vista, or Windows Live Mail with Windows XP/Vista/7, you have already have a Calendar and Contacts. And, of COURSE, if you have Microsoft Office, you have Outlook.

Have you looked at popular personal or business financial management programs such as Intuit's QuickBooks or Quicken? Quote from: rseni on January 14, 2010, 07:35:04 AM

Solve : 64bit java compiler!??

Answer»

First off this is for a class but it is not homework.

I had my first day of my Java programing class today and the instructor told the class to download this. The problem is that I have a 64bit machine. Is there ANY compiler that will run on 64bit? If it is not the exact same as the instructors will there be any compatibility issues when he runs it? If I can't do that, if I install the program the instructor gave me on my 32bit Linux machine will I have any problems when running on a windows machine?

Thanks

P.S. I have not gotten my book yet. If you can recamend a quick guide to show me the basics so that I can test what ever solution comes up that would be great.use eclipse.

http://www.eclipse.org/downloads/download.php?file=/technology/epp/downloads/release/galileo/SR1/eclipse-jee-galileo-SR1-linux-gtk-x86_64.tar.gz

by the way, the output is always the same java bytecode, regardless of wether the compiler/ide or whatever are 32-bit or 64-bit.Thanks BC. I'll let you know how it goes. I have to sleep now so I can get up for my 7:30 class.

Are all compilers mostly the same when it comes to layout and use, so it wont be to hard to figure out what I need to do if it is different then what my instructor gave me? Quote from: Boozu on January 12, 2010, 11:58:48 PM

erm...

an "IDE" is what you use to write the code... the compiler is almost always a small command line program that the IDE calls. For example; Visual Basic 6 uses the C++ compiler (yeah, strange, I know); the java compiler is usually called "javac".

Personally I've never used Eclipse... I've always used netbeans. Not sure if that's on Linux though.

Either way, they will probably have different ways of doing things. but that's not the point; I would hope the class is about java and not the Development environment.

If you compile class files on your machine they should work perfectly fine on any other machine; compiled java is an intermediate bytecode, not machine code, so it's more generic. (this is what the java VM is for)It seems to be missing one crucial part... the executable. How do I compile the code that I wright if I have no way to enter it? Did I miss it?

EDIT
I should menchin that the only programing I have done is batch. That does not require a compiler so may be it does work but I just do not know how to use it.I think I figured out what happend. You for what ever reason gave me the Linux version. I downloaded the windows version and ran the WELL known "Hello world" script. Thank you. Quote from: Boozu on January 14, 2010, 01:07:34 AM

Oh... I thought you needed a linux version...

Also, Windows 64-bit can run 32-bit programs so there is no need to be "picky"... the compiler GENERATES the same java bytecode either way. Quote

I know that but with everyone (In my class) saying that there was not a 64bit compiler and then when I tried to download it, it would not download for some reason I thought it was true.

I will run eclipse buy my instructor to see what he thinks. It is really nice since it is portable.I was using eclipse and then closed it. A few minutes later I tried to OPEN it again and this popped up. What happend to make it stop working?

EDIT
It decided to start working again, but if you know why it stopped then please post so I can provent it in the future

Solve : Getting So Annoyed - Online Videos Loading Only Partially and Stopping?

Answer»

Any online video: YouTube, news websites, Hulu, anything. The videos will load anywhere between ten seconds and one minutes in, and then just stop. When I'm watching the video and it gets to that point, the video freezes, as if it's trying to buffer more, but it doesn't.

I run Windows XP on my Dell XPS M140 laptop. My main browser is the lastest dev build of Google Chrome, though this problems occurs in my versions of IE and FireFox, as well, so I don't think it is a problem inherent in the browser.

I've tried reinstalling ADOBE Flash and I've tried downgrading to different versions of it. One person told me to find "C:\Documents and Settings\[your windows account name]\Application Data\Macromedia\Flash Player" and delete my cookies, but it doesn't SEEM like I even have that folded. I've even tried Restoring my computer a few weeks back--nothing WORKS!!

Any help is greatly, greatly appreciated. Thank you.Could it be the hard disk partition holding the web page caches and the video caches is stuffed? So it could explain why you have this problem repetitively.
If purging the caches gives you no go, you may consider a clean reinstallation then. What type of web connection do you have ? ?If I can help it, I'd rather not wipe my whole hard drive...

I've been using the same Internet provider and router for months and the problem just RECENTLY arose. It doesn't fix anything...it does however REPORT what speeds your connection is at...Um, OK, cool. 4228 Kb/s download speed, 984 Kb/s upload speed, 33ms latency.

Solve : Where did my folders and files go??

Answer»

Hello everyone! I am new in this forum, so I am sorry if I posted this in the wrong area or if I did anything wrong while posting this topic.
I am quite desperate here! I have a folder in my Desktops where I put all my Anime, and for each anime, I have anothe folder, so far I had a few Gigabytes of animes in there. Earlier today, I started to download an episode, and as usual I put it inside the Anime folder on my desktop, and then inside its folder (as I always do). When the download was finally finished, I looked into my Anime folder and I saw that everything was gone! Except the anime file I just had downloaded!
I scanned my whole PC using Recuva, which didn't find any of my missing files and folders, I tried using "Start Search" which was able to find the shortcuts to my missing files, but did not find the files.
Does anyone know what could've happened?
Just in case you need to know this, my operational system is Windows Vista, and my internet browser was Google Chrome.
Thank you very much! Was this folder always a desktop folder ? ?
Are you the only User on this MACHINE or are there others ? ?The Anime folder has always been on my Desktop.
And I am the only user on this machine. ^^I don't know what extension those files have but if you do a *.___ whatever it is in the blank above search it will come up with ALL files of that type.

In other words if i wanted to find all text files on my machine i WOULD open search and type in *.txt....and HIT Enter.

Hopefully your files are still there...which i'm sure they are because a DLoad can't randomly remove files...anyways best of luck and i hope i haven't confused the issue.I tried that... It didn't find anything... The file types were .ram and some of them were .rmvb
I know the files are definitely gone from the folder, because it used to be about 6 Gigabytes and now its only 60 Megabytes.
Another thing I noticed (this might be a good thing), is that the memory space in my computer is still the same as it was before my files disappeared, can this mean they still are around?
I really don't understand why or how this happened... I am absolutely sure I did nothing different, I did not mess with the files before the download or anything...Have you checked the recycle bin?ohh yes! That was the first place I checkedHave you opened Windows Explorer and looked in the folder to which the desktop shortcut is linked? So you did a search for *.ram ? ?
And *.rmvd ? ?

And it came up with nothing ? ?
I find that hard to believe.Allan: yes I have, no good though

patio: sorry about that, I did actually find the file shortcuts, but whenever I try to open them, a dialog box opens saying that the file locations were CHANGED, so I need to browse for them, or one that says that the file the shortcut REFERS to has been moved, so the shortcut doesn't work anymore. I attached both dialog boxes on this post.

[Saving space, attachment deleted by admin]I'd suggest deleting the shortcuts and re-running the search process...they have to be somewhere...note the text in the breadcrumb bar "Search results in indexed locations; try the "advanced search" option.Thanx BC...nice catch...We'll guys... Thank you very much for all your help, but I tried everything, and unless I am doing something really wrong while I am trying to search for the files, I really cannot find them anymore.
I deleted the short cuts, and still nothing...
The advanced search finds a lot of stuff, but not the files I am missing.
The only thing I would like to know is what could've happened? So I don't repeat the same mistake again.
Once more thank you very much.Years ago I encountered a system that had a virus which changed the extension of all media files. Have you run full scans with BOTH your AV and MalwareBytes?

As the name suggests, it is sup'd to reduce bloat, also it installs Avast and Malwarebytes.

thank youI don't know where you got the notion that it installs Avast and Malwarebytes. It does not. I believe PCDecrapifier is a good product; I've seen many favorable comments on it. I've used it. Worked fine for me.sorry I got these 2 programs conflated.

I'm not familiar with Ninite but, BASED on what I see at HTTP://ninite.com/, it only installs what want it to install. So, what's your issue with Avast and Malwarebytes? By the way, Avast and Malwarebytes are both good products.

Don't know, never used it. NLITE is fine, but I really don't understand what you want to do with it.Ninite is what she is referring to...
And as an app i don't see it's usefulness...
It basically scavenges approx. 40 freeware apps and installs them for you.
Not something i would do myself.Hi
the reason I asked about ninite is I came across it, and it says it installs programs, so I thot it would be easier to use it to install for ex Advast and Malwarebyte - than by me installing.
What is malwarebyte anyway?
Basically I thot ninite wd make things easier for me. I know for many it is a snap to install this or that, but for me - if the installation does not proceed perfectly, then I am stuck, and have to ask someone a question as to what to do next.

You little shortcuts in typing are a bit confusing. Is the HIGHLIGHTED phrase above supposed to be,
"it would be easier to use it to install, for example, Advast and Malwarebyte"? If so, why would you be thinking of installing Malwarebytes when you don't even know what it is?

Well, "OE" is used in the topic title, but then in his first post, he says "Outlook". Since I've often encountered forum discussions where the OP says one thing but MEANS the other, I think all references to the email client must be precise. If it's OE, then say OE, or Outlook Express, don't just say Outlook when you mean Outlook Express; this leads to mis-communication. Quote from: cruisin702 on January 06, 2010, 01:48:48 AM

How can I get a free program to which all DOWNLOADED attached files will automatically be directed into?I would suggest something called 7-Zip, it's free.Thanks. I downloaded it, but the problem persists. The attachment is clearly a Winzip attachment file(I see the Winzip lock), so no matter what unlock program I have, I can't unlock it from WinZip. Solve : My computer only opens web documents in Works Processor??

Answer»

My laptop has had Microsoft Office Home and Student 2007 installed but it will only download/open documents and files from websites (such as application forms) using WORKS Processor and that sometimes also comes up with a failed message.

The message box which comes up is as follows:
Internet Explorer Security
A website wants to open web content using this PROGRAM on your computer
This program will open outside of protected mode. Internet explorers protected mode helps protect your computer. If you do not trust this website, do not open this program.
Name: Works
Publisher: Microsoft Corporation

No matter what I TRY it will not use any other program than Works Processor to open the website documents - Argh!!

Are there some settings I can change to make sure they always open in Microsoft Word rather than Works because if they do manage to open in Works they aren't always set out correctly?

Any help would be greatly appreciated as it's hampering my much needed job search!!!Your version of Windows?

So, you download the file to your hard drive and try to open it, right? In other words, you're not trying to view the document within a web browser window?

What's the file type of the files you download? For example, a Word 2007 file has file extension .docx. Word 2003 and prior use file extension .doc. Are either of these the type of file you are DOWNLOADING? If not, what is the file type?

Can you post a link to a site that where you experience this difficulty? The version of Windows is Vista.

Yes, the problem is when I try to download the applications to my hard drive, it will only download it in a Works Processor format.

I believe it's for both of those types of files, .docx. and .doc.

The latest link I've been on and had this problem is below:

Solve : Percentage chart in Excel?

Answer»

I would like to put together a chart for INVESTORS that will give them a return on their investment with a sliding scale, the larger the investment the larger the percentage paid. Can anyone help with this?I think you're making a pretty big request there, and you've provided no info or DESCRIPTION about the spreadsheet layout upon which the chart would be based. This requirement might also be difficult for anyone without fairly extensive knowledge of INVESTING in stocks.

And, what is your level of Excel expertise? Do you know how to create charts in Excel?

One suggestion is to look for a TEMPLATE. Here's something that might be a starting point: http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/templates/TC010233521033.aspx?CategoryID=CT101444811033 I don't know whether it has charts in it but those could be ADDED. It does appear to have a thorough spreadsheet layout for the underlying data that could be used for a chart.

Solve : Tool to check payment hosting providers for ecommerce applications?

Answer» HI all,
I'm throwing out a question that someone may be aware of.
Is there any way of checking an individual website's payment hosting provider?
For example, a merchant is using an unknown hosting provider when they should be using something like Sagepay/Protex/Worldpay.. is there any way of detecting what payment hosting provider they are actually using by going through their website/IP address?

I'm quite new to this, so please bare with me!
Thanks & Regards,
Laurahttp://whois.domaintools.com

If I understand your question properly, the above should help.I would say if it's not PayPal or another reputable outfit i'd either contact the vendor for more info or stay away ALTOGETHER...Thanks guys
kpac, that's a pretty good tool, but when I look up something like www.ebay.com.. it doesn't give me the payment service provider called paypal??
Am I missing something? Oh, sorry. That link I posted only gives you the web hosting provider.

What is the site you have in mind? For example www.ebay.com - It's paymnet hosting provider is paypal.. I'd like to see this result. Why do you want to know this? I believe you normally will not see the website's payment hosting provider stated on the websites of online sellers. Can you show me a major online seller who provides that info? How about newegg.com, amazon.com, barnesandnoble.com, etc. Do you see that info on their site? That's a back-end, behind-the-scenes function. Your main CONCERN should be with the reputation of the primary website, i.e. the seller.

Or course, any website that accepts financial transactions online should use secure pages for that part of their website. This means using SSL; you'll see the SIGNS of this by http changing to https and your web browser displaying an icon indicating the page is in secure mode.

Solve : Installer highjacks priority to open programs.?

Answer»

Hello and thank you for taking interest in my thread.

I am sick and tired of installing programs only to find out that the new program has stolen priority, to open programs with itself.

Take Windows Media Player as an example as being the default program to open your media, then when I installed say, ITunes, it steals the position and highjacks the default to open ALL media with itself.

Then I had a file that needed VLC installed to run the file (I dont know what it means but it was the suggested player for this file), and that promptly stole priority to open everything as the default media player.

Now I know there must be somewhere that I can set my desired program to open my media, I just dont know how to do that!!
Can some one tell me please, how to stop this happening all the time when I install a program?
and second, can you also tell me how to reset the default program, to say Windows Media Player.

Constantly frustrated by all this
Thank you ImnoGuru.
Unfortunately there are tons of applications that do this when they're installed. Some ask permission first (called File Associations during the install) some don't ask like Apple stuff.

VLC has a file association options menu that will allow you to un-checkbox what it has been told to play. In VLC media player go to Tools, Preference, then with INTERFACE selected you will have a button called Association Setup. Just go in and uncheck what you don't want VLC to play. It will reset the CLASSES_ROOT registry entries for that file type.

To prevent this is a harder, you have to have something monitoring the registry for changes and know what should be changing and what should not be changed. Most good spyware tools allow you to monitor changes like that. There is also a program called QuickAssociation from PCMag, though to get copy you have to be a subscriber to their download library. Haven't played with it but the review of the app sounds good. There might be something else out there too.

All of these settings can be seen when you open My Computer, click on Tools, Folder Options, File Types. The Registered files type list is what everything on you PC has been told to open with. If you go in the list to MP3 it will tell you what application to open those with. You can just change it easily to a different program using the Change button or more advanced, you can specify what exact BEHAVIOR you want with that file type. Play MP3 with something, Edit with something else, etc.

Good luck!Total Uninstall is my app of choice for this task...

If I change the extension to use a program that wont work , can I change it when I try to open it or will I have to search it out through the tools, options tabs again?

I'm thinking the computer might tell me it cant open the file and possibly suggest a program to use, would that be right?
Thank you ImnoGuru. You can right click on the file and select properties , If you select the 'General' tab it should say "Opens with: (program)" and have a button beside it to "change" .Thanks cruisin702 for that. I sort of figured something like that, but it always best to ask someone just in case I am wrong.

What? this is a "good" thing? I mean, There's no need for Object orientation, but without learning about types and scope, your not really learning programming, your throwing feces at an IDE. (OK, that's a tad harsh...)

Alright; here's an example. I may not have actually taken a CS course, but I've heard plenty of stories from trustworthy people. Basically, these days, they teach java in the academic studies. Now, Java is an alright language, but it is missing one thing.

Something essential, something, that, after moving from java, over half of students don't grasp.

Pointers.

Pointers are something a professional programmer MUST have a good grasp of. Something they HAVE to understand in order to hope for any chance of success. Of course, they could always be the code monkeys that right the higher level java widgets that take advantage of all the hard pointer stuff written in C++ and assembly, but then they are just the wielders of the glue, not a very fulfilling position.

All that being said... I do use VB6 most of the time, and technically, it doesn't support pointers. Of course I just kind of sidestep the language and force it to use them by using Long variables and CopyMemory() to copy them back into their respective types (that is, to dereference them)

But... err, anyway, back to this smallbasic thing... it's an alright first language!, really... Just so long as they don't start teaching it in College-level courses, things should be fine. Java is BAD enough at that level.

(btw, I might add that even though I haven't actually taken any pos-secondary education for programming or otherwise... I literally had to TEACH a CS degree holder about pointers. It was freaking unbelievable. that was what set my stance on java as an academic language. They should teach Pascal.

But is Small Basic helpful?

YES! YES! I remember, Pascal Pointers were done with a ^, so, you could do:

Code: [Select]var
   Int: Integer;
   LoopVar : Integer;
   IntPtr : array[0...5] of ^Integer;

begin

    for LoopVar := 0 to 5 do
    begin
        IntPtr[LoopVar]:[email protected];
    end;
end.

Well.... unless the whole Pointer business was added by Borland in Turbo Pascal... (on the other hand, Borland Turbo Pascal pretty much was "THE" Pascal, since the only alternative was the IBM version that had... what? 7 different disks? and you had to switch between them constantly?

Heh, anyway... that's a different discussion

back to smallbasic.

I'm not really too sure; I mean, there are other languages that are powerful that are more or LESS "typeless" (such as, and I mention this to prevent ghostdog from hurting me ) Python, but they also at least "imply" types; you still need to know a few basic differences, such as numbers and strings and so forth. With Smallbasic (And really, I don't know the specifics, but given it's roots I am making an assumption) It's really not dynamically typed as much as it's typeless; as a learning language, it really doesn't teach important concepts, like types and scope (which it tries to pass off as advantages) Now, that being said, lacking such requirements can make it easier to learn other programming concepts, and it's certainly possible to learn them before moving onto either Visual Basic itself, or a more powerful language. (Like Pascal heehee).

If I may be so bold, I really cannot judge something as a learning tool, just make handwavy generalizations about what I think about it; I can't really decide "what would be good for a beginner" without remembering how I learned; which was with "older" languages. At the time, VB6 was the newest language (well, for the first year and a half or so) and windows programming was all the rage and so forth, but I learned on a 286 and later a 386 Batch, QBASIC, Turbo Pascal, and a little Turbo C, and eventually upgraded to Windows programs and VB2... went straight from there to VB6 and have had that as a "home language" for quite some time. but, EVERYBODY's experience was different, for me, the most difficult part was going from the concept of "commands" in batch, to statements. It took me quite some time to understand the concept of a function. (thankfully, the use of Goto with Batch didn't crossover into any bad habits with QBASIC . But today, if smallbasic was a first language, it is probably a lot better as a first language then batch.

You think the advanced programming course will teach this? Smallbasic? I certainly hope not.

Pascal has seemed to fall out of favour among academics. Now Java is all the rage. See, it's not enough to envision a problem and solve it through a procedural program: now, you have to construct a rich heirarchy of objects to deal with the problem!Small Basic has a good chance of becoming a teaching tool.
It lets you do wonderful one or two line program, even graphics things.

What exactly are you LOOKING for? A utility to test your computer's hardware?Obviously you can ignore the post immediately below yours re: Nero. Uh, kareem, I think you've TOTALLY missed the point here. Salmon Trout was being sarcastic when he said "Wow, kareem, what a helpful post!"

You initial reply in this discussion was not helpful because you failed to recognize what the OP (Original Post/Poster) was asking. He was not asking about burning software to burn a CD or DVD. He was asking about a "burn-in" utility. That's something completely different from burning software. For example, see WinStress Test okay i am sorry for that

Solve : Outlook, generating contact list?

Open Outlook / Sent / open a send email / right-click the recipient / choose "Add to contacts"
Unfortunately, this is a one-at-a-time procedure. I don't BELIEVE there are any batch techniques that can be applied here to speed up the process.try some of the VBA on the following SITE:

http://www.outlookcode.com/d/code/autoaddrecip.htm

How?

Well, that's a good question; the site addresses adding contacts as you send new e-mails, not iterating through your sent mail.

however- Office, including outlook, includes a rich programming environment known as VBA. Lucky for you I'm pretty good with Visual Basic 6 and this problem caught my fancy.

On the other hand: I was unable to properly test it; since my sent items folder was empty. I tested the basic logic on my other outlook folders, and it seems to work. NOTE that I've only tested this with Outlook 2003.

1. Select TOOLS->Macro->Visual Basic Editor. The Visual Basic Editor Window appears.

2.on the Visual Basic Editor Menu, Select Insert->Module.

Delete anything that is present in the new module, and paste the following:

Code: [Select]Option Explicit

Sub AddSentItemsToContacts()
    Dim ObjNS As Outlook.NameSpace
Dim ColSentItems As Folders, LoopThrough As MAPIFolder
    Set ObjNS = Application.GetNamespace("MAPI")
' Set ColSentItems = ObjNS.GetDefaultFolder(olFolderSentMail).Folders
'Set ColSentItems = .Folders
IterateFolders ObjNS.GetDefaultFolder(olFolderSentMail)

End Sub
Private Sub IterateFolders(LoopIn As MAPIFolder)
Dim LoopFolder As MAPIFolder
Dim LoopMail As Outlook.MailItem
For Each LoopFolder In LoopIn.Folders
    IterateFolders LoopFolder

Next
For Each LoopMail In LoopIn.Items
    AddRecipToContacts LoopMail

Next
End Sub
Sub AddRecipToContacts(objMail As Outlook.MailItem)
    Dim strFind As String
    Dim strAddress As String
    Dim ObjNS As Outlook.NameSpace
    Dim colContacts As Outlook.Items
    Dim objContact As Outlook.ContactItem
    Dim objRecip As Outlook.Recipient
    Dim i As Integer
    On Error RESUME Next

' get Contacts folder and its Items collection
    Set ObjNS = Application.GetNamespace("MAPI")
    Set colContacts = _
      ObjNS.GetDefaultFolder(olFolderContacts).Items

    ' process message recipients
    For Each objRecip In objMail.Recipients
' check to see if the recip is already in Contacts
        strAddress = AddQuote(objRecip.Address)
        For i = 1 To 3
            strFind = "[Email" & i & "Address] = " & _
                      strAddress
            Set objContact = colContacts.Find(strFind)
If Not objContact Is Nothing Then
                Exit For
            End If
        Next

        ' if not, add it
        If objContact Is Nothing Then
            Set objContact = _
              Application.CreateItem(olContactItem)
            With objContact
                .FullName = objRecip.Name
                .Email1Address = strAddress
                .Save
            End With
        End If
        Set objContact = Nothing
    Next

    Set ObjNS = Nothing
    Set objContact = Nothing
    Set colContacts = Nothing
End Sub

' helper function - put in any module
Function AddQuote(MyText) As String
    AddQuote = Chr(34) & MyText & Chr(34)
End Function

Select File->Save.

Return to the outlook window.

Select Tools->Macro: AddSentItemsToContacts

If we're lucky, it adds all the e-mail addresses it finds in sent emails as contacts. If an Error occurs, the error will be highlighted in the Visual Basic editor; let me know the error message and what line it happens on, and I'll try to fix it.

Spectrasonics also makes a very good Bass-Synth(TRILLIAN) running on the same engine.
That is where the problem lies.
If I buy Omnisphere how is the bass-section?
Do I have to buy Trillian too or does Omni. have a NICE bass-section.
I know a specialized bass-synth is allways better.....

Do the INSTRUCTIONS say to RUN audio into the Microphone jack?

Solve : I need to remove a program that will not allow me to do so.?

Answer»

I have zone alarm installed on my computer. I am trying g to remove it because I recently purchased Kapersky 2010. When I go to control panel, add remove programs, and uninstall, it appears to work. I then open up the C drive and all the files are still there. I also TRIED to remove it with the ccleaner tool, and PC decrapifier, which also did not work. When I try to just delete the files manually, I get a pop up that tells me I need administrator privileges to delete the file. I'm the only user on this computer and I am logged in as administrator.

I went to zone alarms web site. They instructed me to boot up in safe mode and delete as many files as I can. I want to delete all the files not just some of them. I am afraid I am going to have to delete this program through the registry. If that is the case I was WONDERING if someone would like to guide me through it. Unless you know of some magic program that will rip these files out.

Thank you in advance Try Revo uninstaller http://www.revouninstaller.com/revo_uninstaller_free_download.htmlZA Removal Tool...I used the Revo Uninstaller first and it took out some but not all. Solve : Sharepod will not start. Shows in Task Manager as a process.?

Answer»

When I doubled click the icon the sharepod.exe will show in the TASK manager and the cpu percent next to it goes to 99 everytime but the program does not start. This CONTINUES until I end the process. The day before it worked FINE. Everytime, before, when I start this program I have to click a menu that will allow the program to run but this has not caused programs. I was going to uninstall and reinstall and found it's not listed in the remove programs menu so I just deleted it and downloaded it again but the same thing happens. I didn't LIST too much info about my computer but if it'll help I'll try to figure that stuff out.

Update: I've tried re-installing and the same problem. I removed I tunes cause maybe that's CAUSING something but no better. I ran another program that asks for permission to run everytime and doesn't show in the installed program menu and that program would start as usual.

Solve : Only 1/2 space used copying MP4 files (Karaoke) to SD Card.?

Answer»

I recently bought a Leadsinger II Karaoke mic that is an "all in one" system. It USES SD cards for the music. It supposedly can support up to 8 GB cards. With this purchase, I received 2 DVDs, each with approx 500 Karaoke songs in MP4 format. I bought a 8 GB SDHC card but it would only WORK with less than 500 MB of songs on it. I assumed that the SDHC card may not be compatible with the mic. I then got a couple 2 GB "basic" SD cards.

When transferring the MP4 Karaoke files from either the DVDs or from my computer to any of the SD cards, it will only use / allocate approx 1.1 GB (or half) of the card space. Both cards show approx .8 GB of free space. Given the size of the files, I should be able to save about 200 songs per 2GB card. I can only save 120 or less on each.

Is there something I can do to maximize the space on these cards?

Thanks in advance. What OS ? ?Vista Quote from: dbagbrown on December 27, 2009, 09:02:50 AM

Solve : Outlook 2000: multiple selection limit??

Answer»

After having been able to select entire columns of EMAILS for deletion, or to move between folders, suddenly Outlook has limited me to no more than 20 items. If I try to select more than that, it collapses to one item, and similarly, if I try to add more than that, USING the ctrl key, it collapses to one item. I can't find any preference or option to affect this, and can't find any reference to it online. Did I accidentally reset something? Have you tried with the Shift key instead ? ?
Same results ?I've also tried the shift key, especially when trying to select a list of emails. It works for anything up to 20, but not more than that. This is a totally new behavior. I've been using the program since, well, 2000 essentially, and this only just started acting this way.Soybean here is one of our Outlook experts...perhaps he'll pop in sometime soon...I'm very familiar with Outlook too and have never heard of this issue. I'm going to check the options now.Have you recently changed screen resolution?

See if this applies: http://outlookliveanswers.com/forums/p/1498/4982.aspxNo...no changes on resolution. The issue with Outlook live doesn't appear to relate, but I'm going to look into anything that might be affecting ANY of the caches on my machine. The only change I can think of occurring, possibly about the time things went screwy on me, might be installation of DragonSpeak...but I'm not sure they relate temporally. And I can't see a relationship either, but why not uninstall it temporarily and see what happens? After all the work I've put into getting it set up, I'm reticent, but if I can't find any other cause, I may consider it. I can live with only selecting 20 emails at a time, but it just seems odd, and is a bit irritating.Does this behavior appear to be limited to Outlook? If you open Windows Explorer to a folder containg many files, perhaps you My Documents folder, can you select over 20 files by using the Shift key?

If you can't resolve this in Outlook based on what's been discussed so far, you might try Windows Live Mail (WLM). To import your messages from Outlook to WLM, I BELIEVE you NEED to first import to Outlook Express and then import from it to WLM. See Windows 7 - Importing mail from Outlook to Windows Live Mail for a discussion of this. Even though you're using Win XP, I believe the procedure would be the same.

Another approach to solving your problem might be to uninstall and reinstall Outlook 2000. Of course, you must have your original software CD to do this. And, if you go this route, be sure to export all your Outlook messages, contacts, etc. so that you can import them back into Outlook after a reinstall. Although this step might not be necessary since a reinstalled Outlook might see your old .PST files and open them without doing an import, I'd definitely export before uninstalling Outlook to protect your data. You don't need to uninstall Outlook. You can start the MS Office install and it will offer to repair instead.

Solve : Software to Compare Folders and Files in Windows XP?

Answer»

Hi

I am hoping someone might be able to recommend a (preferably free) utility (or native method) for comparing the contents of Folders in Windows XP.

I have just bought a couple of NEW external hard drives that are larger than my current pair and I want to transfer my core data. This is about 430 gigabytes of material composed of around 250,000 files.

My pause is that there is a discrepency between my two current backup drives (which are meant to MIRROR one another perfectly). The difference is of three folders and 500 files.

Is there some software that could help me to quickly identify what the one drive is lacking ?http://www.tech-pro.net/howto_033.html

OMG...you have a partition that is 298G in Fat32? I thought it was not feasible to assign FAT32 to that large space...However, to defrag a Fat32 partition in that monstrous SIZE would be a challenge to your endurance. Why not transform the file system to NTFS, which can boost the efficiency of your defrag utility? NTFS won't make defrag any faster... in fact, NTFS is a slower filesystem overall, because of all the checks and rechecks to make sure data is almost never lost. Quote from: BC_Programmer on December 24, 2009, 11:15:06 PM
NTFS won't make defrag any faster... in fact, NTFS is a slower filesystem overall, because of all the checks and rechecks to make sure data is almost never lost.
I do have the personal experience to prove that. Maybe it is the different defrag software we are talking about. I use PerfectDisk as my primary defrag software. The comparison of defrag speed between FAT32 and NTFS is 1 against 100, that means defrag process on FAT32 is 100 times slower than on NTFS.

I used to spend ten hours defragging my whole 250GB disk, the partitions of which are all in FAT32. But when it COMES to a 500GB disk complete in NTFS, it consume me only an hour or so.that just means perfectdisk sucks at defragmenting basic file structures.

secondly, was it the same disk? chances are, the FAT32 drive was some old crappy 4800RPM, not exactly a fair comparison.

The OVERHEAD when dealing with an NTFS disk is higher then it is with a FAT32 drive, this applies to ANY disk operation dealing with files; NTFS needs to keep a journal of all file activity in the transaction log; FAT32 does not. this is a fact. more operations means it takes longer.

That "takes longer" is now hardly notificable even on the largest hard drives, and it's certainly worth it to use NTFS since it's a lot better then FAT32 in every respect, except pure speed, which wasn't necessarily a design goal of NTFS. Quote from: christmasguy on December 24, 2009, 11:10:06 PM
OMG...you have a partition that is 298G in Fat32? I thought it was not feasible to assign FAT32 to that large space...However, to defrag a Fat32 partition in that monstrous size would be a challenge to your endurance. Why not transform the file system to NTFS, which can boost the efficiency of your defrag utility?

hi i have been in hospital for a week just home , you seem to say that the "f32" file would take for ever , it took 35 mins to FINISH Hope everything's okay harry. And don't worry about this guy - he doesn't know what he's talking about.i thought that

Solve : graphics card failure?

Answer»

I have a DELL 5150c desktop, running windows xp with all the latest service pack updates. The computer froze while viewing a virtual tour of a vacation rental, not reaction from ctl-alt-delete. Finally just powered the computer off. Now it won't BOOT, although the fan, etc runs. The diagnostic lights ( 2 + 4) indicate graphics card failure. Unfortunately, as far as I can TELL, there is no actual graphics card in these units that can be removed and replaced. It does, however, contain slots for PCI Express cards. My question is, could adding a card solve my problem or would the failed onboard graphics interfere with the functionality of the new card?

Solve : Protecting files from gettig deleted and modified?

Answer»

Hi everyone out there. I need to know about how can I make my certain files write protected and delete proof but they remain accessible for everyone. I mean others can see my files, can open it, read it BUT CANNOT modify and delete it... Is there any software available that enables me to do that?

I tried making my files write-protected by checking Read Only from the Files Property > attributes but my younger sister REMOVED that protection and deleted my files So I need a software or an application that can protect my files from getting deleted as well as from getting modified. I would highly appreciate your suggestions. Windows NTFS PermissionsThanks for your reply but can you tell me in detail how? or if you could suggests me any good software for such task... Solve : Where does Mozilla Thunderbird stores Account settings??

Answer»

Hello There!

Despite of completely removing Mozilla Thunderbird from my Hard DISK, on Re-installation, it FETCHES the same A/c. that I do not wanna see anymore!

Moreover, during the uninstallation it do not asks to remove "Personal SETTINGS", "CUSTOMIZATIONS" like that to its brother Mozilla Firefox.....?

How do I get rid of that particular email account, I configured inadvertently in a 'Wave' of thoughts?....

Help...Help...Help... Try using Revo to uninstall it.delete the %appdata%\Mozilla\Thunderbird folder.I found the way to get rid of that email A/c & all its respective emails.

Here it goes:::

Tools>>Account Settings>>Choose the A/c to be deleted in the left pane>>Choose the 'Account Options' at the bottom(Drop-down Menu)>>Remove A/c option is available!

On the recommendation of REVO Uninstaller::

I use the same as a 'Default' choice for every Uninstallation.A/c settings & Customizations remain unaffected unless that very options is present in the actual Uninstaler of the actual application.
