I like to make videos to share with my FRIENDS on youtube, I want to make youtube videos with my pictures and songs, but UNTILL now, I can't find a good software can HELP me to deal this, welcome to recommand me some good program, thanks in advance. Initially it was my intention to give you a couple of direct links to sites i found on a google search that assisted with your request. Then as i perused the endless sites offering guidance (some very basic and general others much more technical) it occurred
to me that this was something you actually NEED to do yourself. This is because not knowing your knowledge/equipment/and intentions for content/etc. my recommendations might FALL short of the mark if i tried to assume for you.So here is the search criteria that i used and if you do also i think you will find all the guidance you will need including youtube videos as to what is required.good luck, truenorth

Solve : Booting Windows?

Answer»

Hello, I have a toshiba laptop that runs windows 7. I recently downloaded a torrent of Mac OS X and they were dual booting. I wanted to get rid of the Mac OS so I deleted the partition that it was installed on but now, when I boot my machine up, it is unable to FIND either Win7 or OS X. Help would be greatly appreciated..Boot to your Win7DVD and choose the Repair option at the bottom...I don't currently have the disk :LYou'll need one sooner or later...sooner in this case.Okay, I ASKED a friend and he said that I could use his, do I have to use my own, and will this delete all my STUFF?Not if you do it properly...
The Win7 repair feature actually is PRETTY good...considering the MS alternatives in the past...
You should LOSE no data in the process...

Best of Luck and now would be an excellent time to learn about/practice a solid backup strategy...

Solve : sharing excel worksheets?

Answer»

hi. please help. i have several worksheets in one file(they are sign-up sheets for future events for our scout troop). how could i have all the troop members be able to view the worksheets, mark their chosen EVENT times and have it so that everyone can see what everyone else has marked on the sheets? we do not have a website. can i do this w/email? i have excel 2002. i do not speak 'computer'. i have not used forums before. do not know if this is the correct place for this question.  thank-you to anyone who can help. You could do it via email but I think it might be difficult to manage.  You would need to decide how to do that.  Would you send the file to everyone at the same time and then CONSOLIDATE the responses into one spreadsheet when you receive the replies?  Or, would you circulate one master file to one PERSON at a time?  I imaging the latter approach might DRAG on too long.

Google Docs may be a better solution. One component of Google Docs is their online spreadsheet.  Another option is Google Calendar.

Solve : Remove Refresh Rates from CRT Monitor Driver?

Answer» Background
Perhaps you are familiar with the 'Crysis 60hz' refresh rate issue.
Crysis is a 2007 game, with groundbreaking graphics that arguable paved the way for the eye Candy in all the shoot-em ups today (but not for the game-story writing, which is arguably better...)
ANYWAY, despite all their high end SHADER models and destructible vegetation, the game won't run at anything higher than 60hz refresh rate in full screen - its not so much a technical issue, as it runs WINDOWED at higher rates just fine...
Anyway, the one work around, besides adjusting your monitor's projection while in windowed mode, that I found, was to create a monitor drive that did not include support (in my case ) [email protected] and 75hz etc.
Unfortunately, that was a few reformat's ago and I can't seem to remember, much less find, the software I used to do this, or if I did, how to use it to properly create a driver.

Issue
To the point, I need to create a monitor driver for my monitor which is missing undesired refresh-rates (resolution settings IRC but its the rates I am after.) I don't want PROGRAMS to be able to access 1024x768 60 Hz. I have done this once before, and completely forget what to do.

Maybe someone on these boards can point me in the right direction.

P.S.
No, I do not want to lock or force my refresh rate. That will not appease the God, Crysis64.exe, or his half brother. They laugh in defiance at your RefreshForce, pitiful Catalyst and other refresh rate locking software. Or they crash.

P.S.S.
My SPECIFIC hardware is a Studioworks E700B if someone wants to do the work for me...
System is Phenom II 955 BE, 4 harddrives ( ), SSD, and GPU card is ATI HD 5770 (Sapphire Juniper XT)

Thanks much.
Crysis will run at 75M refresh rate fine...

Not sure where your info is from.I didn't say it won't.
It just won't allow itself too unless its the only option. Quote
the game won't run at anything higher than 60hz refresh rate in full screen - its not so much a technical issue, as it runs windowed at higher rates just fine...

Apparently you did...K, poor wording. Clarified in post 3.
More specifically - there is no setting, config, etc, and as stated before refresh overrides tend to be..overridden.
Theres plenty of info on the web about the problem, but not too much on solutions.
So, how do you get it to run at 75z+. . .

Solve : Print Spooler Problems?

Answer»

I somehow got the very nasty White Smoke virus on my XP Desktop last Friday. I was able to clean it out with Kaspersky, however now I cannot get my Print SPOOLER running.

The Spoolsv.exe file was missing from WINDOWS\system32, and the ImagePath was missing from Spooler in registry.  I have copied Spoolsv from my XP Laptop, and ADDED ImagePath (Type = REG_EXPAND_SZ & ValueData = %SystemRoot%\system32\spoolsv.exe) to my registry.

I have went over and over this and still cannot get the Print Spooler started, as there is still no Path To Executable (C:\Windows\System32\spoolsv.exe) listed.  Any SUGGESTIONS?

Thanks MUCH!Why are you revisiting a Topic that;s been covered and why did you not follow the advice GIVEN in your 1st Post ? ?

Solve : Altering DVD regions?

Answer»

In SHORT the other half wants a DVD, but I can't get hold of the film for my region. Is it possible to make a region altered COPY of the film?

Not sure on the legalities of this btw so feel free to tell me off if I'm in the wrong.

[I am sure though that buying a film and making hundreds of pirate region altered DVD's to sell would be very illegal, but that's not the aim of the game.]http://www.google.com/search?hl=&q=Altering+DVD+regions&sourceid=navclient-ff&rlz=1B3GGGL_enUS369US309&ie=UTF-8If you are playing this movie on a normal dvd PLAYER then do a google search for how to make the player region free. Some dvd players even tell you this in the manual.

If playing it on a computer there are programs out there that will do this for you and once again google is your firend.

Solve : AVI to DVD Sound Sync Error.?

Answer»

Using DVD  Flick to convert AVI to DVD results in Sound Sync Error. The sound is ahead of the video. How can I fix this so that next time I will get it right on the first write. (I am now going to use DVD RW so that I can try again and not waste DVDs.) Is there some kind of software that will insure that the output will be in sync?

I have TRIED it only on two XP pro SP3 systems. I have yet to try Vista or Win 7.

Any suggestions welcome. (Except remarks about my thermal paste.)Is everything in sync in avi file? Quote from: BRONI on January 23, 2011, 08:11:32 PM

Is everything in sync in avi file?
Yes, that is what bugs me. The AVI will play fine. But I burn it to DVD using DVD Flick and the audio is ahead of the  video. I don't get it. But not all videos. Some from the same source are close or even perfect. Hmmm....I used to use DVDFlick and I never had that issue.
Maybe you can try their forum: http://www.dvdflick.net/forums/Thanks, looks like others have this problem. It is not exactly the fault of DVD Flick. It is caused by the AVI encoding. Here is a thread they have, if anyone else wants to know more about this. I STILL have not found an easy answer, but they give some ideas about things to try.
http://www.dvdflick.net/forums/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=3358This suggestion will not RESOLVE your DVD Flick program. However for the sake of achieving your objective of burning quality videos with video and audio in Sync i offer you an alternative free burning software http://www.sothinkmedia.com/ It is not a trial. It will automatically resize files to fit on a 4.7gb dvd disc (even well over 2 hours). The only drawback to live with is in the free version you get a brief announcement about the software from Sothink which only appears once and does not interfere with the actual video. Give it a try and see if it solves your problem. Out of curiosity why are you converting to DVD and not staying with the AVI format? truenorth Quote from: truenorth on January 24, 2011, 08:56:55 AM

Thanks for the link. Will give it a try.
I put my AVI videos onto full DVD RW discs in standard format for DVD player that do not have the MPEG4 firmware. (Current players are MPEG 2 only.)
We have TV sets in areas where it is more comfortable to watch. And I share my videos with family MEMBERS who do not have computers or prefer to watch on big screen. Maybe  someday soon TV makers will catch on and put MPEG4 decoders in TV sets and put an end to the DVD shuffle.  If they did that, we could have 3 or 4 null length movies on a flash chip the size of your fingernail.
http://geek9pm.com/jpg/finger-nail0002.jpgYou could also try Total Video Converter(trial version).

Solve : DivX plUS?

Answer»

Good Morning,

I have a movie player called DivX plus, it is used to play videos.

I would like to copy this player to my thumb drive, where can I look for the proper executible to copy?

C: Drive?...but where?

Thanks in advance....Right-click on the shortcut - propertiesA vid player is gonna run painfully slow from a flash drive... Quote from: patio on January 24, 2011, 07:25:36 AM

A vid player is gonna run painfully slow from a flash drive...

Why?
Most apps including the ones designed for this...including Portable apps  i have ran are slow...
I would think this will hold true for a vid player as well.Well, I thought I had BETTER make sure I know what I am talking about, so I downloaded VLC Media Player Portable  from here

http://portableapps.com/apps/music_video/vlc_portable

and installed it on a folder I created on a pen drive I have lying around (Staples own brand 4 GB cheap drive, plugged into a powered hub) and tried it out. The first time I ran it there was a pause of about 30 seconds and a message saying "Rebuilding font cache" and then I was able to go to the "Media" menu, "Open File", and open a movie file actually on the same pen drive. The second time I ran the app it just loaded briskly. The file is an Mpeg-4 (Xvid) 608 x 320 movie with a bitrate of 814 kbps. The audio is 134 kbps stereo mp3. It loaded in a very short time (in a "flash" hee hee) and PLAYS smoothly without glitches. It also plays movies off my hard drive(s) and CD/DVD drive and another pen drive the same way. My system is reasonably modern: AMD quad core Phenom II 4 GB RAM, and all my USB hardware is USB 2.0 but I used to do these things on my 2004 Pentium 4 system and my 2001 AMD Athlon 1800+ system. In fact my home DVD player has a USB port on the front and I can PLUG in a pen drive or an SD card in an adapter and play an AVI or mpg movie off these.

However, to the OP, I do not think you can just copy a nornally installed program out of its folder in Program Files and expect it to work from a pen drive - it has to be specially made portable.

Interesting you took the time to test it out...i'm in the process myself.
Portableapps has some great stuff...

I'll update my findings as well later.

Thanx Salmon.

Solve : Computer screen resolution?

Answer»

An update on this post. I scrounged around in my archive of computers and found a PCI video card (not as recent as i would have preferred)
It is an ATI RAGE 11 + 3D circa 1996. Has been installed in the DELL and has now given me the availability of adjustments to resolution parameters. Somewhat limited as this card was designed for use with Win 95/98. I can get 24 colours now (not 32) and i have the max resolution it will accept at 1028x780 or something like that. I tried to find drivers for it that would associate with win xp hoping i might get even more flexibility of choice. Went down many rabbit holes on that with no success. However  the good news is that the streaming video and dvd video on a 26" LCD HD monitor is great from the computer.Would have liked to have been able to upgrade the on board video card's drivers but that did not work out. Thanks to all that provided their guidance, truenorthIts a very small topic but its too much discussion !!jhonas, I fail to understand your contribution to this thread with your comment "Its a very small topic but its too much discussion !!" . The original issue still remains unresolved: the on=board video card has NOT been improved ( which logically if it could be improved would provide a better result than the card replacement i have done). Yes i realize that a more recent PCI card would undoubtedly give me better resolution options but so would the restoring of the on-board card if that is possible to achieve. I have done what i can so far but i was hoping that there would be assistance forthcoming to deal with the driver issue around the original video card. So if your insinuation is that it is not an issue worthy of discussion i would ask you why you think that? truenorthPlease don't respond to trollers. He's already been warned. Thank you.Too bad they didn't  give off an odor or something self evident that we could know they were trolls.    truenorthThis shall probably be my last pronouncement on this topic. In deference to the many people that seem to be following this post some new information but 1st a little background.
This computer was ACQUIRED recently WITHOUT any knowledge as to it's previous ownership or use. It had many issues. I had EXHAUSTED my own abilities to resolve what i believed to be most likely a software issue (probably drivers) with it in regards to it's "display" issue on a monitor. You are aware of my alternative of the PCI card installation and the result.
I decided that this fix was not achieving what i felt would have been what the on-board video card would have provided. So the next thing i did in order to get a better picture of what if any remaining issues were going on with the computer.
1.I ran the "chkdisk" utility and watched the progress. Innumerable corrupt and orphan entries appeared.
2.The O/S was XP home version. I decided to install XP Pro version.
3.In the bios reassigned an optical DRIVE to 1st position.
4.Installed XP Pro SP 2.
5. Installation was successful.
6. The computer defaulted to the on-board video card. (initially created some heart thumping as i got a black screen after windows boot screen). However for whatever reason i unplugged the VGA monitor connection from the PCI card and back into the on-board video card and eureka a display appeared.
7.Now i have complete option ability within all the parameters of the display including all resolution parameter as the on-board card was intended to supply.
8. I had also been endeavoring to upgrade the computer from SP 2 to SP 3 and it would never install (always indicated errors well into the install). Now that too has been successfully installed.
  truenorthNice work there...
Good to hear it's off of life support... Thank you Patio, truenorth

If drive space is not an issue, you might keep the more important ones just in case you need to reinstall.  It could save you the time of searching for, and re-downloading, those files if they are NEEDED again in the future.  On my Windows XP computer, I kept downloads on a separate partition and kept many of them for a long time. Just SEEN further posts - thanks for those.
I only deleted the items that I knew were update applications.  I kept those I was unsure of.

Solve : .MPL Files?

Answer»

I was wondering. When I first started playing guitar in the EARLY 90s, I got this awesome instruction cd-rom. One of my guitar heroes put it out and honestly I haven't seen it in years.  I came across it and wanted to check it out, but I had the feeling it might not work. My thought was correct as it was made in 95 and then just supported the new Windows 95...sounds ancient computer wise. I remember the video being great and the music tab worked with the video. It was really a cool software DISC. It is long out of print and really hard to come by from what I understand now. I looked into Window Explorer and there were some different files on the cdrom, but one file seemed to be the storage main file. It lists as a .MPL file (mPlayer Document). I have never heard of this file type before. The size if like 550Mbs so it has to be that one. I am not seeing too much online that is helping me so in the process I came across this site in trying to figure it out. I am not sure what kind fo files are in this main file, but my interest is to EXTRACT them if possible and maybe convert them so i can enjoy them on the computer and maybe my iTouch. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

BrentBrent, just a shot in the dark here but have you tried using the Program Compatibility Wizard, found in Programs \ Accessories?  I'm under the impression .mpl files are the video portion of the CD.  Hopefully someone more familiar with your problem will be along to add some help.

You might also provide the NAME of the original CD in question and maybe some serious Google SEARCHING will come up an answer.

Rosie Here is a link to tell you what a .MPL file is and where it was used. It is possible also to convert the file to another type if you do not have one of the listed programs that will allow it's use. truenorth

Solve : how to start programs w/ Windows for selected user only??

Answer»

I have 2 user accounts on this PC "Toshiba L355 notebook". I have it SET to start Malwarebytes, Comodo firewall, AVG and Secunia PSI when Windows starts. All were installed and set to 'start when windows starts' while logged onto my 'Administrator' user account. But these are also now starting when I start up and log into the other 'user' user account.
How do I set these to start with Windows only for my administrator account but not for the user account? Beats me.
Have you looked at this already?
http://thedailyreviewer.com/windowsxp/view/the-administrator-cannot-change-the-startup-programs-109178742Thanks Geek-9pm, but I have no problem accessing or running anything as administrator. I just can't figure out how to separate which programs start with Windows based on which user is logging on. If I remove the programs I mentioned above via 'msconfig/startup' while logged in as 'administrator', then they respond accordingly when I log in to the 'standard user' account. (and vise-versa). I would guess this is because Windows actually starts before the option is given for the user to log on - I also can't see a way to separate Windows startup options in the BIOS based on 'user'.

Also, I have the same results if I try to modify these programs start options via 'Administrative Tool/Services'. (not user specific).

Anyone else have a solution?

BTW: I forgot to mention this PC is running Vista (in specs) if that makes any difference.

Thanks,
Mike

Yes, there is a way of doing that in the registry. Before you edit the registry, make sure you know how to backup the registry.
Search Microsoft Support for:
Restrict  Users from Running Specific Applications

Sorry I can not find a specific reference. Basically, you have to demote the user to a LOWER level. Or you have to make a group policy and do not let the user be a MEMBER of the group.
The problem is that there needs to be a user level just below administrator, but above  guest. The method was changed in Vista. Search the Microsoft support site for new security features in Vista.
Start with this:

I would assume UAC is active after Windows starts. If UAC is where I need to make the change, then I'll likely need a step-by-step tutoring. I'm a slow learner.

They do something like he says. Not recommended for the rest of us.
It is a kind of marketing thing where a user does  a search and find sites that link to other sites that have what he want.s.  But the user sees a bunch of advertising before hand.

Legal, but very annoying.

Anyone who wants to advertise through Sedo can expect to lose hundreds of dollars in a few weeks.  So one would want to have a clever business plan.

Solve : Does anyone know the best Free Video Converter??

Answer»

Does anyone KNOW the best Free Video CONVERTER, I want to convert youtube videos (.flv) to .avi.Welcome to the computer help forum.
It's nice to see new people coming here, possibly you found us in the little search looking for the best and most friendly computer forum on the Internet.
But of course you could ALSO place your question on a Google search and found many answers to your question about the Best Video Converter. Without knowing much about you personally, it would be hard to find a specific recommendation that would suit your exact needs. So, rather than give you a long list of possibilities, please allow me to take a different approach.
This website forum takes pride in giving people free and objective advice about many matters. Yet it is a commercial site. It does depend on advertisers to help offset the cost of running this site. Therefore, it would be inappropriate to name just one particular commercial interest or to read negative comments about another commercial interest.
In the spirit of free speech and fair play, and I'll offer which is advice that goes beyond my own experiences. There are many, many commercial interests but would like you to try a free product that later you will wish to upgrade. There is nothing physically wrong with this process. However, there is a alternate approach that is in competition with this method. It may try to explain.
There are a number of computer professionals as well as amateurs that have DECIDED they are not in a hurry to make money right away. They wish to develop a reputation as being experts in their field. To them that is more important than the immediate monetary reward. To that end, they make some of the best software available to the general public for no erect monetary consideration.
Now here is my personal opinion. Why pay money for a software product if a free one is available? That should be a no-brainer. But a number of commercial interests have used the free to try approach rather than a completely free approach. And I am thinking of one company in particular that offers a free video converter which proceeds to the face your video by putting a watermark right in the middle of the picture.
So, or anybody out there reading this thread, don't buy any video software that puts a watermark on your work. There are lots of free products that are really, really free of any limitation.

And your recommendations are ? ? ? Quote from: Geek-9pm on January 18, 2011, 03:36:21 PM

Much in the same way those *censored* policemen keep sabotaging organized crime, the nerve!Well, there seems to be a bit of confusion in this thread.
First of all, Torrent programs are not comparable to organized crime, and Microsoft is definitely not like an officer of the law.

Now about the NOT opening post problem - check to see what your browser's default action for a .torrent file is. MAKE sure that it points to opening uTorrent.

About the opening post, I have NO IDEA, and suggest reporting the bug to uTorrents developers - only after you've checked to make sure your uploads aren't restricted by your own uTorrent settings you get when right-clicking the tray icon. Simple I know but just checking.
(About the second post, the Opening Post is referring to an application, not a website, and to upload traffic to various other users of the program)
Also, maybe your internet service provider employs traffic shaping, but I've never heard of anyone completely RESTRICTING any type of traffic...
Here is the LINK to the uTorrent forum web site where there are many components (like the CH forums) including faq and chat. It does NOT seem to be a dead site. I would recommend you go there and join the forum as a member and discuss your issue with the members there. truenorth

Solve : Deleting Line Drawings in Word?

Answer»

I am running Windows XP, Home Edition, Version 2002, Service PACK 3; Microsoft Office Word 2007.

I am not ABLE to DELETE a line drawing, a shape, inserted Insert/Illustrations/Shapes/Recently Used Shapes.

In my effort to do so, I select the drawing, which is enclosed in a rectangle with a blue dot at each corner.  There is an ANCHOR in the margin.  After hitting "delete," the anchor and the blue dots disappear.  The drawing, however, is content to remain on the page.

How can I delete the drawing?

Please and thank you,

Oompahpap

Try this.Close the open project and start a new one.
If you have the same problem with the new document than my advice to you is to reinstall your Office.
If you don't have the problem with the new document than the document you wan't to delete the line drawing is damaged. After selecting the "object" you wish to remove, see if using Edit \ Clear will work.

Hello,

However, when I click the icon for OUTLOOK, it comes up with a box, asking me to wait while it configures... Then I have a message telling me it can't FIND the path, and asking me to list the correct FILE for configuring.
Oddly enough, when I keep cancelling the request, then up comes Outlook, but it's a real nuisance, as this configure me box keep popping up within Outlook, when I cancel a page.
Any ideas how I can find the path for the thing to configure ?  The Office suite is a download (student offer) so I don't have any disc, but it's LEGAL.

Solve : Deleting Macromedia Shockwave 8x?

Answer»

Apparently the program that I've mentioned is obsolete. It's been replaced with Adobe Shockwave of which I already have the latest version. I'd like to remove Macromedia but it's not in Add/Remove programs. I find the program in; path: C:\WINDOWS\system32\Macromed\Shockwave 8\SwInit.exe (which is version  8.5.1.102). Once I get into Macromed, there is an Unwise(uninstall) option and normally this is what I would do. My concern is; I get quite a bold warning, not to remove or CHANGE any files etc. in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM 32.,but they do let you view all files and this is where I find the "unwise icon".  I could just leave Macromedia but it's 20+ Mb and it keeps showing up in Secunia PSI as an "End Of Life" program and gives me a SOLUTION that doesn't SOLVE the problem.  Anyway, because of the warning I'm wondering if I should have any concerns uninstalling this program ? Thanks, overthehillI would remove it and just reinstall the Adobe, just in case I would make a restore point first though. Quote from: Quantos on January 18, 2011, 04:45:26 AM

Solve : Open Ofice vs Ashampoo Office 2010?

Answer»

I'm looking for thoughts comparing these two apps?  I realize that OO is free , but now Ashampoo Office 2010 is being offered for $14.99 US. What I'm asking is; is Ashampoo's offer worth the bucks? It appears to me that Ashampoo has some good apps. I use Ashampoo Snap 3 and it works well.
As far as "Office", I'm still using Office 2000 and it does everything that I require.
What's happeng is ; I'm trying to help a friend (at quite a distance, by email and phone) that just purchased a  PC. It's OS- Win 7 64 bit- and I'm afraid that this PC that he purchased knows more about him that he knows about it . BTW, I did get him to download Open Office and without being there it was awful difficult to help him. He so far has not got it installed. I'm hoping that perhaps for $15, Ashampoo's version may be (at least just as good or better?) and also wondering if it would perhaps be any easier for him to install . Anyone have thoughts on this?.
Thks, overthehillI've never used Ashampoo, but I just looked at their website and the price was $59.99 USD.  You might double check what you get for $14.99.

I do use Open Office occasionally and it works fairly well. Quote from: rthompson80819 on December 20, 2010, 05:28:52 PM

I'm tempted to suggest using TeamViewer for a remote support session.  TeamViewer provides for remote logon to a computer over the Internet.  It is free to use for personal use.  Of course, you'd still need to direct him to TeamViewer's website, download some software, install it, and initiate a remove support session with you. So, this might not be easier with this particular person, based on the picture we have of his computer SKILLS.

What seems to be the hurdle here?  Is the downloaded file a .exe file or a zipped file?  If .exe, can you not get him to just double click on the downloaded installation file and start the installation?  Quote from: soybean on December 21, 2010, 11:01:10 AM

Well soybean ,without seeing what he sees it's rather difficult to say? I've gone through this type of thing with him many times before. And, he ( another senior ) ,can make some of the simplest things unbelievable painful. If I understand him properly ,it's an exe. file but once executed he claims there are so many options and everything that he tries gets him more and more confused. I sent him a whole page of INSTRUCTIONS that I THOUGHT would really help him.? So far (this was just yesterday) I've not heard back.
I'm thinking that I'll eventually have three options. a) forget the whole thing. b) I can download Open Office and get it going(then BLOW it away once I guide him through it) or, c) download Ashampoo Office 2010 (30 day evaluation) and let him know what I think of that.
I not really fond of downloading anything that I know that I'm not going to keep, so for now I'll wait and see if he's making any progress?
Thanks, overthehillWell, there'd be no harm in installing and keeping TeamViewer on your computer.  And, you would have it to use in the future if this friend asked help with other computer issues.  I've used it with my mother (in her 80's) but I have a feeling she may be a bit more computer literate than your friend.    Quote from: soybean on December 21, 2010, 11:50:13 AM

Solve : Outlook 2007 Issue?

Answer»

I recently tried to send an email using my Office Outlook. It contained two attachments (1 PDF and 1JPEG file) about 3MB in size. I sent the email Friday as I left WORK and came in Monday to find it still in my outbox. I stopped the email from sending because about that time I was informed that the email had been sent dozens of times. I have estimated that this email went to three recipients about 60-70 times each.

What should I be looking for to correct this issue?

Windows XP Pro 32bit
Office Outlook 2007If it happened only that once I'd chalk it up to an isolated instance and not worry about it. It's possible it somehow got "stuck" in the outbox in "send mode" (don't ask, I don't know - but I've seen it happen before). If this happens again, I'd start investigating a virus problem. It did happen one other time. I chalked it up to an isolated incident that time.

Are we leaning towards a virus problem? How recent was that last time?  Any similarities between that time and the most recent occurrence, such as type and size of FILES sent?  Quote from: SmittySr on January 19, 2011, 09:34:21 AM

It did happen one other time. I chalked it up to an isolated incident that time.

Are we leaning towards a virus problem?
There are some viruses that will send out emails to everyone in your address book. But those emails will not be something you generated and they will contain a virus. If everyone simply received MULTIPLE copies of your original email I would not suspect malware, though there is never any harm in checking to make sure. These are emails that I have generated. It seems to happen when the file size is large. Both times the file size was 3-8MB. They are high resolution graphic publications. The PDF's are usually fairly small but the JPEG's are larger. I notice that when I send a regular text email I do not have a problem. My outgoing server has a maximum size limit of 10MB. Yeah. As I said, I'd be surprised if it's a malware issue.

Just for the heck of it, why not download & install Thunderbird and run a test mailing with it (send a few large files to a friend - or even to yourself) and see what happens? I'm not suggesting changing email clients (*censored*, I wouldn't know what to do if I couldn't USE Outlook - been using it since it was first INTRODUCED), just running a test is all. And maybe for just these types of emails a different client would make sense. Just a thought. Now, this is sounding more like an issue with your ISP (Internet Service Provider), or your "outgoing server".  Even though the stated size limit is 10MB, it seems to be not working well with smaller, although still somewhat large, files.  A phone call to their tech support to discuss this may be worth a try.

Ah, I just saw Allan's last post.  Yeah, you try Thunderbird or, if you're using Windows XP, Outlook Express, as a test. Another thought: is there another computer in the office you could try using to send these large files, just as a test? I do have Outlook Express on a couple of the terminals in the office. I will run a couple of test emails from those terminals to my private email address.

I have really noticed an speed issue since we switched ISP's. We went from a partial T1 to dsl 1.5Mbps. I have really noticed a difference.

I remember giving dsl a shot in my office years ago. Lasted about a month before I ripped it out and switched to cable. In an effort to cut cost ( against my recommendation ) we switched to dsl.

Run a speed test at http://www.speedtest.net/ and compare the results with what your DSL service is supposed to be.  My DSL service is 1.5Mbps download and 512Kbps upload.  Actual results from a speed test are just slightly less than the rated speed.  DSL speed can vary from, i.e. be lower than, the rated speed depending on the distance of your location from the nearest "CO" ("central office", or what I would call a relay station).

As as test, I just sent a 3.17MB file to myself via Outlook; it took about 1 min. 45 sec.  My upload speed used to be 384Kbps but was later increased to 512, with download remaining the same.  Do you know what your upload speed is supposed to be?

By the way, some of the DSL providers only charge $5 more per month to increase speed from 1.5Mbps to 3Mbps.

Solve : Calendar Creator Plus?

Answer»

I have, what I hope is an easy, question.  My new laptop came loaded with Windows 7 and so my old Calendar Creator Plus (A very old program) wont load.  Is anyone familiar with this program.  It made nice little calendars that had an "count" function that added a year to whatever event I put in.  So for my grand-daughters 18th bday it would automatically ADD a year on next years calendar.  I need a program like that for Windows 7.  Any IDEAS?  It's probably a 16bit application which will not run on Win7

Some Ideas...16 bit programs will indeed work with Windows 7 - they may not work with the 64 bit VERSION though, I'm not sure. Not if it's This One...

The newest ver. runs on all up to and including Vista...so i'm sure it's fine for Win7.I don't know about that particular app, but Windows 7 has no problem that I'm aware of with 16 bit apps. If NEEDED, you can always run in compatibility mode, but mine run fine with no adjustments at all I love this site  Thank all Quote from: Taras49 on November 24, 2009, 09:47:46 AM

Solve : Laptop wont read flash drives when...?

Answer»

Computer info: HP Compaq Presario CQ60-615DX laptop. Windows 7 64 bit. Belkin F7D4101 wireless adapter.

I use a Belkin Wireless Adapter as the built-in wireless of my laptop doesn't pick up my router signal in the basement where my office is.

Problem: When the adapter is plugged into a USB port (any port) the other available USB ports will not read any of my thumb drives (they either do not appear at all, or they do appear but they show up as having no data on them). As soon as I unplug the Belkin adapter the problem goes away.

I've had the Laptop for seven months and this is a new problem that started a couple weeks ago. I made no changes to my computer in that time.

I . There is obviously some conflict but I'm not very computer literate and don't know how to resolve this issue other than attempts I've taken below.

Solutions TRIED:

1. Uninstalled/reinstalled USB drivers via Device Manager to no avail.

2. Reinstalled the Belkin software numerous times, No update for drivers available.

3. Tried System Restore.

Thank you very much for the help. Quote

It is an USB adapter with a 32 bit driver.  That is the key to your problem.  No solution , I believe..    Maybe somebody else knows how to solve hiss.

Thanks, but I have CCleaner and the built in HP Assistant which gives me the same info and allows for changes. I only have the basics windows stuff at start up plus the wireless adapter.

Because you don't say so i must ask the question. Is your router plugged directly into the USB port or is it in a USB hub? truenorth

The router is plugged directly into my DSL modem.Actually the router i was ASKING about is the one that is plugged into your laptop. This one i believe "Belkin F7D4101 wireless adapter.". As the way i read your initial post you have opted to use that USB installed router over the internal laptop router--is that not correct? truenorthWell, the router and adapter are two different things. The Belkin adapter is plugged directly into my laptop and picks up the signal from the router upstairs. So far, I can't figure it out. Nothing I do makes any difference.UPDATE!

I think I solved the problem...

I unplugged the adapter from the USB cord, then plugged it directly into my laptop and windows now reads all my flash drives with the adapter plugged in! I'm thinking it has to be the USB cord itself causing the conflict. Unfortunately I need a chord to place the adapter property in order to connect to the router so I can't leave it as is. I'm not going to mark this thread solved until I MAKE sure. I'll get a new USB cord over the weekend and try it out.

Thanks everyone.Oops, double post. Quote from: SherryB on January 14, 2011, 11:30:58 AM

Then it is a hardware issue. The requirements for USB 2 cords are very strict. Yet  some vendors push the edge by selling cords that don not fully comply with the specs 100%. This has been my experience too.Which is where i was pointing also with the direct or hub question. i suppose it would have included the "cord" if i had only dealt with the plugged in "directly" question. Anything that is between a device and the usb port may cause issues. truenorth Quote from: SherryB on January 14, 2011, 11:30:58 AM

Thanks for the update. Sorry we weren't of more assistance but glad you got it sorted out I thinking your "wireless adapter" is a device powered by laptop 5V. Your USB cable may be long enough (or damaged)  that the voltage drop across the cable is using all the available power for ports you connect your flash drives to.  Buy the shortest, quality cable to suit your needs. IMHO.

Solve : MDI FILE - office 2010?

Answer»

I have come across the procedure to be followed to install Microsoft office document imaging in Office-2007. But What is the procedure with office-2010? (Under the office tools column, there is no MDI).

Thnx in adv.

RK  From: install microsoft office document imaging 2010

Microsoft Office Document Imaging (MODI)

MODI provided a common document imaging and scanning solution for Office. It was also the basis of the Fax feature for Office. When MODI was installed, it was the default handler for .tif, .tiff, and .mdi files. In Office 2010, MODI is FULLY deprecated. This change also affects the setup tree, which no longer shows the MODI Help, OCR, or Indexing Service Filter nodes on the Tools MENU. The Internet Fax feature in Office 2010 USES the Windows Fax printer driver to generate a fixed file format (TIF). MODI and all its components are deprecated for 64-bit Office 2010.By "deprecated", do you mean it's been completely dropped from Office 2010? Quote from: soybean on January 12, 2011, 08:02:49 AM

Yes.Yeah. Actually the use of the word "deprecated" is QUESTIONABLE at best, but I'm just quoting their document.

Solve : Centering a Frontpage Theme?

Answer»

All, I know this might appear very basic, but I have searched the internet and can't find the answer.   I have a FRONTPAGE 2003 site using the Expedition theme.  I really like the looks of it and really mostly just use it for generating nice titlebars for the pages in my site.    My problem is everything in the site is left justified with maybe a 50 pixel left margin.   I would like the pages to appear in the middle of the internet BROWSER window.  My pages are only about 600 PIXELS wide, so they look a little funny on the PAGE

Can anyone tell me where I can make that change to center the pages?

Solve : itunes vs. other music programs??

Answer»

Hello all.  About two years ago I posted about an issue I had with Rhapsody and my DRM files.  Eventually I had to reinstall XP in order to get my DRM files to work again.  Well it appears that I am back to having DRM issues again.

The only reason I have kept with this service was the convenience of unlimitied music on three MP3 players.  My husband alone has a playlist of 300+ songs.  Now I am looking to make a change.  (yes, by now I could have just purchased all of his songs...vs. paying for the subscription)

I do not have iTunes on any of my pc's.  I must say that I am not a lover of Apple but what are the alternatives?  I serched a bit through the forums and haven't found any reccomendations.

I am very far behind in burning music.  Just not my top priority but the time has come.  My children are now teens and they want tune-age!

Please advise. For reference about DiRM or Digital Rights Management.

Digital rights management
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Digital rights management (DRM) is a term for access control technologies that can be used by hardware manufacturers, publishers, copyright holders and individuals to limit the usage of digital content and devices. The term is used to describe any technology that inhibits uses of digital content not desired or intended by the content provider. The term does not generally refer to other forms of copy protection which can be circumvented without modifying the file or device, such as serial numbers or keyfiles. It can also refer to restrictions associated with specific instances of digital works or devices. Digital rights management is used by companies such as Sony, Amazon, Apple Inc., Microsoft, AOL and the BBC.

You can find serious opposition to any current form of DRM.

Copyright developed in the age of the PRINTING press, and was designed to fit with the system of centralized copying imposed by the printing press. But the copyright system does not fit well with computer networks, and only draconian punishments can enforce it.

The global corporations that profit from copyright are lobbying for draconian punishments, and to increase their copyright powers, while suppressing public access to technology. But if we seriously hope to serve the only legitimate purpose of copyright -- to promote progress, for the benefit of the public -- then we must make changes in the other direction.

Many today think the restrictions of DRM are totally unjustified. You should be able to buy a song once and never have to pay for it again.

Advice? On this forum we can not and will not tell you it is OK to break the law. With a bit of effort, you can get the DRM stuff to work. Butnthe burden then on you to  make it work right.
Do you think taht is accetable? Is that what you understood when you agreed to the service?
You can go to the public library and borrow music without paying anything. Why should some third parties make a profit from the works of others? Does Apple really own the music?
I am not quite certain as to what it is you are seeking. Is it some program that will allow you to download audio files or is it an alternative to an Apple device that will allow you to store them and play them back for listening? Or is it both? truenorthA key question is how many songs do you and your family download a month?

Personally, I don't download that many, and when I do I go to Amazon.  You can preview each song and the average cost is 99 cents.  Obviously, if you download more than ten songs a month, Rhapsody is cheaper.  Amazon offers a lot of free music also.

Frankly, I don't know if Amazon has DRM.  I've never had a problem, and I use two different music players.

And as Geek mentioned, don't overlook the library.  Most have a large amount of music you can borrow and rip.  And thrift stores usually have a number of Cd's for sale at $1 or $2 each.  Buy them, rip them and then donate them back to the store.Sorry my question was so vague.

I have accepted that I will have to begin to pay for my tracks.  That is not to say that I do not pay for them now.  I only pay to listen to them not to burn them or keep them permanently on a device.  Nor am I asking any of you to tell me how to circumvent the system.  I would't put that on this forum.  I have a very high regard for the people that donate their time to this forum.

I have yet to rip any of my cd's.  That is my intention, to rip my current collection and then to begin to purchase tracks online.  I have heard that Amazon tracks are DRM free.  Is that true?  What about tracks from NAPSTER

What alternative programs are out there besides QuickTime or iTunes to rip my cd's?

I have fixed the DRM issue with our MP3 though.  That was what prompted my question because I am tired of messing with the subscription.  I just want music that is DRM free.

If you're into DRM-free music, you have a reason to get pretty excited today. Right now the subscription levels are $9.99 for 30 mp3s, $14.99 for 50, and $19.99 for 75. eMusic also focuses on independent labels so you may be able to find lots of new music from lesser known ...

Yes, you can get MP3 without DRM from reputable companies.
The DRM is both a technical and social failure. And that is not my opinion. I am just stating an obvious fact. Thanks for the info everyone.  It has helped.  The Sansa Fuze 8GB player is back to having DRM problems (time to change the hardware too, as this is the FOURTH time we have had an issue.)  So I am back to where I started.  I will be buying my husband an iPod Nano and using a combination of iTunes and those that were recommended.  I actually had tried eMusic in the past and was not a fan.  I haven't been into indie music since my 20's and I very rarely find what I want on that particular service.  This link is found inside of apple.com if you can believer it.

Solve : Custom Login?

Answer»

I created a small custom LOGIN that allows MINOR customization, creating a file, opening an APPLICATION, editing a file, SENDING a message to another computer on the network, remote shutting down another computer, etc. (Actually I learned how to create it, wasn't all me.)

I was wondering if there was a way to make this small program run as SOON as the computer turns on (Before or after logging in to a Windows account) and make it so no programs can be run until the person has successfully logged in correctly to the batch file.

I don't care how basic it is, as LONG as it works. There's some people who try to use my laptop and I don't like the Window's login, I want my own custom login.

(If this isn't the right section, I apologize and will move the thread to the correct area if instructed.)
