Solve : Out of Office Assistant Help?

Answer»

I searched around but COULD not find ANYTHING that could help me.  When i click on my out of office assistant on my computer it says "You are currently working offline.  To use this command you must go online and connect to the Microsoft Exchange Server."  The problem is that i am ALREADY connected.  It says connected down in the bottom right corner and i can send and recieve emails just fine.  To make matters more interesting, when i go to another computer around my work, it will work just fine.  I am wondering if it has something to do with the installation of outlook on my computer.  I have tried to reinstall outlook but that isnt helping either.  Can anyone assist me with this? Anyone see this happen before?

I really appreciate the help!

Eric DrabertIn Outlook, click File, then if Work Offline is checked, click it to uncheck it.its not checked... it shows that im working online... the online time i get something different is when i try to click on the out of office assistant or the rules and alerts... THANKS for the QUICK response

Solve : Spotmau Software?

Answer»

Hey everybody!

New to this forum.  A buddy gave me a bunch of parts to build a desktop system.  Got everything up and running and I wondered about how to transfer all my "STUFF" from my old system to the new system.  I saw this ad for Spotmau software that says you can transfer everything from one system to the other, including the Windows OS.  Is this legit and what do you guys recomend?

If there is a archive that covers this topic LET me know.

Thanks

DavidDepending on which version of Windows..RETAIL or OEM was on the original machine will determine if this is legal or sketchy.

Do you have a Windows CD ?

There are ways it can be done but again it depends on the info we are currently lacking such as the other machine, Windows version etc.

Let us know.DWPort ....... Quote

Thats great , so we can assume you have already installed the operating system...... would that be correct.  Then you said , Quote
I wondered about how to transfer all my "stuff" from my old system to the new system.
By all my stuff, again I assume your referring to all the stored data that is on the old machine.
The easiest WAY would probably be to slave the hd from the old machine onto the new machine and then transfer the data ....... it's just that simple.
Then put the slaved drive back in the old machine and your good to go.

Solve : Inverting Colors?

Answer»

I was just wondering if anyone has/knows a trustworthy program that would invert the colors in my display for a Windows XP. If you don't know what I mean by 'invert', look at the pic I attatched.
I tried google but I couldn't find anything. If you ask why I wan't it, I think it would be cool to have an inverted computer and I could show my friends  . I also like what the icons look like.
Thanks.

[cleaning up - attachment deleted by admin]I agree, it looks nice. easy to do on a Mac with a couple of keystrokes. I'll report back later.

I saw this
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/accessibility/magnifierinvertcolors.mspx

That only inverts the colors of the magnifier window. Anyone know how to do it for EVERYTHING. I've also looked at the video card SETTINGS but I didn't find anything....
As your image shows, you've already inverted the color in part of that image.  So, why do you need to ask the question?

I'm wondering why you want to do this.  I think the inverted part looks UGLY. I used paint to inver the colors. And I think it look cool  Well, you could invert everything one by one, but that would be a huge pain.  I'll be on the lookout for something.Thanks. I don't mean by inverting pictures, i mean inverting the overall colors of the computer.I would think anything that does this automatically would be a major DRAIN on resources... Thanks. I don't mean by inverting pictures, i mean inverting the overall colors of the computer.

Don't worry, I get what you mean.  See, I was thinking you could invert your background, then replace your icons with inverted versions (IconoMaker is a good free program that I use).  Then you could use the Display Properties to adjust the look of your folders, taskbar, windows, etc.

Like patio said, something that does this automatically might be a drain, but still, I'll be on the lookout for something. If only you had Mac, then you could use this.

I'm Googling for something still, so just hang tight. Quote from: Dark Blade on June 05, 2007, 02:28:59 AM

If you have a monitor with BNC connectors, just swap 'em around for an interesting effect. You could cut open and hack a VGA cable extender by swapping wires around if your monitor has a captive cable, but it would be so easy to fry your hardware if you didn't know what you were doing.

Solve : Backgrounding a folder (windows)?

Answer»

OK, I've know for some time, that the desktop is just a open FOLDER, with out back, forward, that thing on the side(If you don't have XP/vista it wont be there), and so on. This folder has a picture though instead of the white background.

So is it possible to get a programme that can add a background to any folder, I know you can make folders TRANSPARENT with some graphics cards (mine can) but it looks stupid.

So, to conclude, can you get a programme that can add backgrounds to a folder/folders

Like this (done with PHOTOSHOP)
What you have to do is edit your Desktop.ini file (enable system files to see it).

Here's a program that makes it very easy...
http://www.winmatrix.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=10039

It also lets you customize the folder's icon and information tooltip. Quote from: CBMatt on June 05, 2007, 12:33:51 PM

Thats when I tried to install it.You might want to take a look below...

Solve : Outlook 2000 error?

Answer»

I uninstalled Norton Interent Secruity and replaced it with McAfree Anti Virus.  McAfee did not load properly so I uninstalled it. Outlook will will no longer work. The program opens but I get an error message that says Outlook has experinced a problem and needs to close.  It appears that the uninstalls deleted  files that Outlook needs (?)
1)How can I back up my contacts and mail messages without being able to open Outlook?
 2) Any idea on how to fix Outlook?
 3) Can I reinstall Outlook or will I nuke my mail and contacts if i do this?  Your email and contacts are probably fine.  They are contained in a .PST file (probably named OUTLOOK.PST).  (1) Search your drive for *.PST files, and the one with the most recent timestamp is probably the one you need.  Make a BACKUP copy of this file, and (2) re-install Outlook.  (3) You shouldn't lose any email or contacts by re-installing, but you have a backup from (1) just in case.

If re-installing Outlook does not work, then create a new Outlook profile (Control Panel -> Internet Mail) and try RUNNING Outlook with the new profile. If you create a new profile, you may need to point Outlook to the old PST file to get your old email and contacts to show up.thanks for the tip.  I uninstalled Outllok and reinstalled but the error still crashes Outlook when it opens.   I also deleted the profile and BUILT a new prodfile to no avail.   I searched for any .pst files and found NONE.  I don't know where to go from here.   Are you using Microsoft Outlook, or COULD it be Outlook Express?  What version of Windows are you running?

The Microsoft Outlook program comes with Microsoft Office.

The Outlook Express program comes with Windows.I am running Windows XP home with SP2 INSTALLED.  I am using the full Microsoft Office 2000 professional suite that comes with Outlook.   How did you search for your PST files?  Try this command from the command prompt:
Code: [Select]dir c:\*.pst /a /sDoes it give you anything?

Solve : Take out black background and make it transparent?

Answer»

Hello there.
I have an image, which I wish to make the background transparent.
At the moment it is black, and I need it to match my site's background.
Easy, make it grey, right?
Wrong.
The background of the site is a gradient, it changes from top to bottom.
So I need to make it transparent.
The image is attached, click on my sig to see my site or click here.
I hope someone can help me out here, the black background of the image is annoying me now.
Thanks in advance.
Calum.Calum...

E-mail it to me and I'll take care of it for ya.

-SteveDone.
Thanks, hope you can do something with it.If you want the background of the picture transparent.
(works with fireworks and with Photoshop)
get the picture, use the magic wand tool (or lasso the predator) change the alpha, then save it as a PNG.
And because you are using a Dreamweaver(I hope), it should work fine (I think, I'm more of a designer than a web maker)
hope it works I CHANGED the image, Calum...

Here's my go at a new logo...with a different Predator...

The problem with your current logo is trying to separate the dark background from the dark "leg" images.  Changing it to a transparent background would definitely show the discrepencies in your current image.

Anyhow...I gave it a shot...

[cleaning up - attachment deleted by admin]I see some gradient in the color at top, above the image, and at bottom, below the image, but not in between, where the image is placed.  The area on the ride of the page with the text is also gradient but that's irrelevant.  So, it seems like the background could be changed to the color of page background surrounding it.

By the way, if you're not able to get a satisfactory image with a transparent background, I think the current image looks fine.  You have black in the top/header image.  Quote from: saint_hades on June 05, 2007, 01:50:14 PM

I tried that, but the magic wand/colour select tools (working with Paint.NET and the GIMP here, but Paint.NET got the legs and the GIMP didn't) didn't do too well, I could select the black and remove it but couldn't make it transparent.
I'll try saving it as PNG this time.

Well, when I use the colour select tool to select the gradient in the middle, where the image is, it is a different colour to the background.
It's a slightly darker grey box and I am unable to find the right colour.
The black box doesn't look too bad, but I would prefer it grey.
If that's not possible, I guess I'll just leave it.Perhaps it would be easier to look for a better VERSION of that same Predator image (possibly with a different background color) and just remake the logo. Quote from: CBMatt on June 06, 2007, 05:39:27 AM

YEAH, I tried that.
Problem is, I can't find it anywhere.
When I was looking there was only that one that looked any good, and the upper 3/4 or more of the BG was black anyway, I added a bit underneath so I had room for "Dark BLADE Clan".
I guess I'll look for a new image, I had no success trying to make it a PNG file with a transparent background, there was too much black still there.OK, I changed the image, what do you think of that? Quote from: Calum on June 06, 2007, 12:46:52 PM

Solve : In Outlook Calendar, how do I stop birthdays (from Contacts) appearing twice??

Answer»

I'm running Windows XP and Internet Explorer browser and Microsoft Outlook 2003.

In some of my Contacts, the person's birthday is recorded.

It therefore appears - usefully - in my CALENDAR.

However, it seems that it takes effect as a kind of recurring EVENT and thus as each birthday occurs, it crops up more than once.

I can, of course, delete each additional event on an ad HOC basis - but there is presumably a tick box or similar that I can use instead.

Here's a question:

These birthdays that show up more than once in your calendar...are they possibly from duplicate CONTACT information within Outlook?

Let's say you have a contact with more than one email address...so...is there more than one contact CARD for this person?  If so, I'd recommend combing the cards into one contact to see if this solves the problem.

I try to look for the simplest solution first.

Solve : Sound Volume not as loud?

After all of that was settled I noticed that the volume on my computer isn't as loud as it used to be. Mid range volume used to be almost too loud and now full up is just average sound. I hesitate to fool with it because everything is working so great. I also installed some NEW RAM recently but I cannot image that having an influence on the volume. Any ideas from the genius pack.Check all of your cvlume SETTINGS, INCLUDING ones in any media players or applications, PLUS your speaker volume.Yes I have done that for all apps, Sound in Control Panel and volume on the Audigy 2 control panel. Solve : font management?

Answer»

I have read that you can divide your fonts into more than 1 file/folder. Read elsewhere not a good idea.  I would like to keep track of 3 sets of fonts- the original with the system, downloaded fonts, downloaded dingbats.  I would like to use all of them just like the originals- access the list from whatever program I'm in. My thoughts are I may not want to keep forever all fonts I download, and for ease of use  I would like to keep my dingbats separate.

Is it possible to keep added fonts on a thumb drive and access them that way?  Have considered keeping other parts of digital kits on a thumb drive as WELL. Like that I could use them on either of my computers without downloading a lot of material on to both computers.

I am open to any suggestions for font storage/access.

Thanks

-B-Try this:

http://www.ampsoft.net/utilities/FontViewer.phpPlease let us know if the tool The Saviour mentioned will do what you want.  I looked at the website but I'm not clear on whether it will do that.  What, exactly, do they MEAN by "Installation of fonts from a folder (one by one or from a list)."  I'm still thinking you must install fonts in the standard Windows folder for fonts in order to make the fonts available in your applications.  However, the site does say Font VIEWER can organize fonts in categories.  That should be helpful, even if you do need to install all fonts in the standard Windows folder for fonts. It is not recommended to have more than 400 fonts in the Windows Fonts folder due to performance reasons.

I've never tried this SOFTWARE...I'm not a big font user.  However, follow soybean's recommendation and review this software to see if it will perform the tasks you need.I looked at the site. I'm not sure exactly what all it can do, but I think it is worth downloading and trying it out.  Even though the descriptions aren't clear to me, I think it would at least help me get a BETTER grip on my fonts.

Thanks for the suggestion- I appreciate the help.

Solve : ADC Sound Recorder 3.4?

Answer»

Does anyone know ANYTHING about the free downloadable ADC Sound Recorder 3.4?  Has anyone EVER tried it?  How do you rate it?

Thanks.  Looks fine to me. Pretty basic though (but that's fine if that's what you want).

If you want a more advanced free one, I recommend you check out Audacity (audacity.sourceforge.net).It's definitely lacking when it comes to FEATURES, but if all you want to do is record without all the bells and whistles, this looks LIKE it will get the job done.  It's not the best, but I'm thinking of keeping it...although I don't think it's very user-friendly.Audacity is INDEED a fine alternative...

Solve : Windows Media Player closes when I open files!!?

Answer»

I'm really at a loss on what to do here, I had (not sure what version) WINDOWS Media Player and it opened up just fine and appeared to work, but as soon as I clicked or tried to play a video file,  it said something like:

"Windows Media Player has encountered a problem and needs to close."

This morning I thought I'd download Windows Media Player 11 to see if that worked, but I've found that I have the exact same problem... so I'm really stuck!

Additional Details

Now, it's not just 'one' particular video file that isn't working, it's ALL of my files which usually work perfectly, and yes, I do have a codec installed (specifically - K Lite Codec Pack) . Could it be a virus effecting my media players (I say players because I've found that Google Video and Media Player Classic aren't working either)?

Can someone please help me out, I really need to get it working again!

Thank you!  I bet your windows media player is out of date try using this and see if it works
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/10/default.aspxBut is Windows Media Player 11 not the most recent? In which case, I cant possibly update it  WMP11 is the most recent.
Try downloading VLC media player, see if that works better.
What happened before this started? It always worked fine before this, I had no problems with it at all. I dont know what's happened!  How about with VLC?
And what protection do you have?
Do these video files work on another PC?I'll download VLC tonight and see

Protection..? What do you mean by that?

And.. I dont know if the work on others, I only have one PC, and they're all downloaded onto it. But they used to all work fine, I think it's the player that's the problem, not the files.Protection - spyware and virus protection.
Things like Spybot, Adaware, Norton, AVG, and so on.Yes, I do have those, but I dont know how well they're working to be honest!

None of my media players are working, I just get error messages and then it shuts itself down, so it's not just Windows Media and I'm not sure I want to download this VLC player thing if it's just going to have the same problem.

Is there anything else I could do? Do you/or anyone have any idea what might be wrong?Which is why I asked which ONES you have.I dont know what ones I have I'm afraid  , SORRY I'm just not very good with computers! - Yes, it's playing music and CDs, just not video files.

- I have a codec installed so it should be able to play anything, but I think mostly it's Avi files -- weirdly though, when I tried to access the folder they're in via 'My Documents', it said to protect my computer this PROGRAM has to close.  What's going on there!!

- Yes, I just tried it there and DVDs are working fine.Sorry to double post, but I tried to play a file again and I got this message:

"DrWatson Postmortem Debugger has encountered a problem and needs to close.  We are sorry for the inconvenience"

Does that ring a bell with anybody? What does this mean?Danau .......  Ok ...... now we know you are able to play a music cd and a dvd ok using WMP 11.   I would like you to D/L   the VLC player , as already suggested by Calum .......  and try to play the vid that won't play in WMP11.
BTW , you never did say what the file extension was on the vid that wont play.

Solve : Outlook can’t find attachments?

Answer»

The problem:  I cannot open or view an e-mail attachment in Outlook 2000.  Outlook says: “The system cannot find the file specified”
This occurs regardless of the method I use. Double clicking the attachment or using the context menu in the opened e-mail, as well as using the context menu command “View Attachment” by right clicking the unopened message in the inbox produces the same result.  Yet, I can save the attachment to the hard drive without a problem, and then open it, which confirms the existence of the file.
When Netscape retrieves the message, the attachment opens correctly with the default application for the file type.

I have a dual boot setup with ME and XP and the error occurs only in the ME platform. I am used to Netscape as a mail client and Outlook is a new experience for me, so I PROBABLY missed some configuration or setting. BTW I thought that the rules may be interfering, so I removed them all.  I send messages with VARIOUS file attachments to myself from a different account trying to pin down the problem.  Low and behold, I was able to open i.e. view an *.ini file. It opened in Notepad.  But it did this only once, and subsequent files received the not found treatment.

Does anyone have a solution, and if, would you be so kind as to share it?  I could really use and will greatly appreciate any help.

Some older applications don’t run under XP and upgrades are not available.
Don’t want to install PROGRAMS not used anymore, but needed to access their files.

No, just dislike it, when applications don’t work correctly.

Thanks for the wakeup call.  I will deep-six ME and find a way to work AROUND my imagined dilemma.

That was what I was trying to tell everyone.

Jonas Here's a good ONE...Registry Mechanic by PC Tools Software.  It's not free, but I use it and swear by it.

http://www.pctools.com/registry-mechanic/

There's a trial version, but it will only fix the first few entries.

Remember, if you're going to use this type of software...make sure you compare other products before purchasing...understand what the program does...learn the software before using it...most of all...know what you're doing.

What do you man by "repair"?
CCleaner removes left over or redundant entries to save space and therefore make the system faster.I would say if a program alters the registry to make it better in any way, it could be classed as a registry repair program.

There almost certainly will be programs that do similar/other things though... Or something that like gets rid of bad entries or replaces deleted entries and see if values and stuff are correct for best performance...That's why I asked what you yourself MEANT by repair.
I classify CCleaner as a registry repair tool, as well as utilities such as ERUNT which can back up and restore COPIES of the registry. What I mean with repairing is quiet simple:
A prog that automatically restores entries who are damaged by a virus or by malware,...
I know you can backup you registry and then just restore it when its damaged but when you installed a prog between the last backup and the wrong registry the you have a problem.
Than you can say just reinstall it but...
I think that by now you understand what I trying to say.

Solve : What's the difference between a recovery disk and a Windows reinstallation disk??

Answer»

I am looking into BUYING a new computer and noticed that some systems come with recovery disks and some systems come with Windows installation disks.  What is the difference?  Do recovery disks MAKE it so that when you reinstall Windows, the drivers are installed as well?  I have a Dell Dimension 4300 right now and it came with a Windows installation disk that had Dell printed on the label.  When I rebuilt my system one time, I still had to reinstall all the drivers.  Would a recovery disk reinstall all drivers without me having to go on the Net and download them?
Thanks in advance!A Windows installation disk installs Windows.
A recovery disk sets your PC back to how it was when you got it.
A Windows disk is the better of the two.
Hope this HELPS. Quote from: Panda25 on June 11, 2007, 02:04:30 PM

Yes, that is an advantage of using a recovery disk that came with the computer when it was new.  Since you're talking about new computers, I have a hunch that, if you elect to get the Windows disk, they might also come with a disk that has the drivers you need.  I'd LOOK into that.Thank you both for the information.  I've been wondering about this for a long time.  Now I know. You're welcome.

Solve : Can't remove KBC onlinne banking??

Answer»

A while ago I installed KBC online banking.
But we have an other computer in our house with also has the program.
Sow now I want to remove it.
But I can't find anyway to do it.
This is what I tried so far:
-Looked into the software removal list.
-Used the uninstall tap of Ccleaner.
But in both list I can't seem to find KBC online.

Thanks in advance

Jonas Well, I've never heard of such a thing.  Why do you NEED to install special software for online banking?  I bank online, have for years now, and just use my web browser.  This is how most people, at least here in the U.S., do their online banking.

You might visit this support page, Need help?, and try the telephone support.

By the way, since you do not see KBC online banking in ADD or Remove Programs or in CCleaner's uninstaller, how do you know you really have it installed?  Is it on your Programs menu?  Exactly what does it do that can not be accomplished with a web browser? They say that this is a safer way to do your banking stuf.
The say that there are much easer way's to hack it when you use a webbrowser.
Because when I go to C:\Program files\KBC onlinne.
There is a map with the program in it but I can't find the uninstaller.
By the way the link you have given me is a link that checks if you PC is good enought to run the prog.
But I'll try calling thanks for the help.

Jonas KBC online does not install software to run...it does however CREATE it's own folder under Program Files.
Probably for caching data...I do have a KBC online .exe.
When I click it I get a separate screen ASKING my PW and my user name.
When I fill this in I get to the program its not a browser.
Sow I think this is I call a program or am I wrong again?

1. At a store. That's a S-T-O-R-E.
2. Borrow one from a friend.
3. Take the laptop round to a friends house and plug it into his or her monitor.
4. Take it to school or work and plug it into a monitor you find there.
4. Take the computer to a repair S-T-O-R-E and pay them some M-O-N-E-Y and they will try it out for you and tell you how much it will cost to fix.

Solve : Should I upgrade my BIOS / RESOLVED?

I was looking at my Everest Report and noticed that my BIOS is from 2003. Should I consider upgrading even though everything is working the best in year since my new RAM upgrade, "if it ain't BROKE". My system is shown in my Everest Report  http://dennishinds.com/report.htmLeave it well alone.
Flashing the BIOS can be very dangerous.it should only be required if there is a problem in your motherboard, which is listed as a fix in the updated BIOS. if not then leave well alone. sometimes it is very easy to do an update, but also very easy also to destroy the bios chip. resulting in a duff motherboard. which may or may not be easy to find a replacement for.
some motherboards NEVER get any updates the company just come out with newer motherboards. Thank Goodness, something I don't have to upgrade. I have upgraded my ram, hard drives, CD drives and every drive that drives my computer and all that has resulted in great performance. However every time I go through an upgrade I WORRY about getting a stomach ulcer. Thanks guys I will leave well enough alone. Solve : My Documents = My Music + My Pictures + My Videos... Can I break em up??

Answer»

Okay, so My Documents is composed of My Music, My Pictures, and My Videos. Can I have those separate things on different drives? I have all kinds of gadgety-goodness floating around the house but the common limitation is that most of them will only find the files shown from My Documents. The problem is, My Videos alone is at well over 400GB, and My Music is creeping up there in size as well. Factor in My Pictures, and it gets a bit too big for one drive all by itself. Unfortunately, I have a 300GB HDD and a 500GB HDD free for storage but I don't want to lose 200GB via RAID. Now in the registry at My Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders it shows where each of those (My Music, My Pictures, My Documents) is set to be, so could I just change those to reflect having My Videos on a separate drive than My Music and My Pictures? Is this going to screw anything up? Will it show properly on other devices once I share them? I would just put them on different drives in different folders but unless it is a part of My Documents, it no WORKY. Anywhoosles, any suggestions, help, death threats, etc... are more than welcome. Hmmm, "no worky".  What mean "no worky"?  Have you tried it?  What happens?  Read this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/My_Documents.   Under "Other 'My' folders", it says TweakUI can move the "Other 'My' folders".  So, I'd download and install TweakUI and use it to do this. soybean, I have TweakUI and it only changes the four links on the side of the open/save dialogue box. I think dhaltom is attempting to actually change the default opening folder for his programs. Most image programs open to My Pictures by default, and so just changing thos five links will not help.

dhaltom, I do not know if that would mess it up or not, I have never tried it. Try to Google your question.

By the way (this is not related to the question), TweakUI is it a cool little tweak utillity. So even if it will not solve your problem, you can still get it.This may help:

How Windows will behave after moving one or more of the "Other 'My' folders", I do not  know.  I haven't tried it.  But, dhaltom, I'm inclined to think you try it and if it doesn't seem to work right, reverse the move.  Also, I'd backup my registry and create a Restore Point before doing this unless you already have a very recent Restore Point.  Okay soybean, thanks for the correction. For some reason I didn't remeber that option. You want to store this stuff in a different drive, right?   So in drive "D" create a new folder (double click on My Comp, double click on drive D, click on File, click on New , New Folder and name it whatever).
Then go to the file you want to move, click on it, click Copy:  then go to your new folder and right click, and then Paste and you have your new folder with all the info without any risk of losing the info.  Once you check the file contents you can then go back to drive "C" and delete the old file. In response, I have an Xbox 360, a Nintendo Wii, and an original Xbox running Xbox Media Center. There are also two other computers, but they don't have any problems finding things that aren't in My Documents. The Problem I had *was* that none of those devices would read anything from my computer unless it was stored in My Documents. So, as an example, I would go to videos on my 360, connect to my computer, and all it would show was the files in My Videos, which *was* with the others, My Pictures and My Music, but if I had any videos at any other location, such as on a different drive, it would not show them, even if they were shared.

After messing with a number of settings I still couldn't get it working, so I gave up. I went on to get a virus and had to reinstall my OS, which, as it turns out, was the problem all along. Somehow, my networking stuff had gotten messed up, and it wouldn't share things properly. After the reinstall I was able to share things, and they APPEAR to be working. I did change the registry to reflect having My Videos on a different drive, and there have been no adverse problems as of yet.

To be honest though, I ended up having to do the reinstall a few times, and had experimented with Network MAGIC for all my networking needs, but after the latest, I was able to get it working on my own. Next chance I get I am going to see if I can get ahold of another original Xbox and use it DOWNSTAIRS to share my media, and then I will be fairly well set. Anyways, thanks to everyone for their help, I appreciate it greatly. (Would have been back sooner to give thanks but I have spent the last 5 days getting things back to normal on my computer, which is leading to a renewed interest in backing up my system regularly...)

Solve : stopping belkin wireless usb utility from loading at startup?

Answer»

wasn't sure where I should put this, but this seems like a good place.

I have a belkin wireless network adapter, upon purchasing it, I installed the software that came along with it, this software is ENTITLED- belkin wireless usb utility.

whenever my computer boots up, this program loads in the system tray, along with windows zero configuration.  the problem (annoyance) is that both the belkin prgram and WZC both fight over which one will get to control the adapter.

usually the belkin utility wins, which is unfortunate because I want to use WZC.  So as a result, I have to tell the belkin utility to let WZC configure the network OPTIONS, close the belkin appl. and then do a repair in WZC.  Opposed to just having WZC automatically connect to the internet when I TURN my pc on.

I have tried to use msconfig to disable the belkin program, but I cannot make heads or tails as to which startup item the belkin utility is.

Also, I am very willing to uninstall the belkin software.  But the question then is, would I still have the drivers necassary to operate the actual adapter?

keybowvio02 ...... Why not Email belkin ...or visit their site.

I read through there articles a little bit before, the results were:

"our software is better than WZC, so should should immediately disable WZC upon installing your network adapter"

well, basically.

This is why I thought I would ask here first, since I'm probably going to get an E-mail back telling me all the reasons why there software is better than WZC.

Oh, well, I gave it a try, I guess I should wait "up to 72 hours to recieve a response" From Belkin.

I'll be sure to let you know if I get anywhere w/them.Well actually Ccleaner has a good tool to manage your startup programs.
Go tools-> startup and everything has an URL next to it
Sow that will clear up WITCH Program it actually is.
Once you have used that you won't be able to use the startup of the program again or you will have to reinstall the program.

Jonas OK, so after my first e-mail to Belkin's support I got this:

Click on the start.
Click on Run.
Type `services.msc` and click OK.
Select Belkin wireless utility or service from the list.
Right click on it.
Click on Properties.
Click on Stop.
Click OK.

sounds good, but when I looked at the "list," "Belkin wireless utility or service" was not there

However, there was an item entitled "Belkin wireless USB network adapter,"  so just for kicks, I clicked stop.

Then I did a reboot, no change, both WZC and the Belkin utility loaded.

So, I E-mailed them back, and this is the response that I got:

its nothing will change any setting on your computer and you already stop that utility which will not run in your system backend processes. However, Belki utility still start with your windows program when you boot up the system because you are using the optional utility i;e, Windows zero configuration and you cannot REMOVE Belkin utility permanently because it is installed in your computer system and registered in the registry. So, do not worry you can continuesly use Windows utility.

Ummmmm, thanks  ? Not.

And their support seemed so well spoken the first time, and it was the same person who wrote back to me, both times.

Jonas-  I'll have to give that a try, I'll let you know how it works out.

Solve : SWF and FLV files do not play sound?

Answer»

I have Windows XP SP2.

When I PLAY mp3s/wmvs/anything that doesn't use flash, everything WORKS perfectly, but when I play a SWF file or play an FLV file, only the video plays and there is no sound. I reinstalled flash, but nothing changed; still no sound. Also, system alert sounds don't play.

The NIGHT before, I tried something out and downloaded K-Lite and installed the lots of codecs profile. Then I uninstalled it and reinstalled some codecs that I had uninstalled, but I don't think that would have anything to do with flash, but it might.

Help?Anyone at all?

Solve : Norton Removal?

Answer»

Well today I'm going to be removing Norton off of one of the computer's in my house using Patio's Removal METHOD and I'm wondering can anything really bad happen by using this procedure and also if anyone has done it with success and some ease.

Also, we keep getting a message from our old Norton 2006 saying it ran out of time, If I use this procedure will it get rid of this? I'm assuming it will because of deleting the registry keys but you never know.

I have removed Norton before, but not with that method.
I did use the steps DESCRIBED to clean up later on though when I knew about them.
I can't see anything going wrong as LONG as you follow the steps correctly, there's nothing inherently dangerous about it.

Yes, it will get rid of it because Norton will not be present any longer.

Hope this helps.
BTW, what are you PLANNING on replacing Norton with? Quote from: Calum on June 18, 2007, 01:00:10 PM
BTW, what are you planning on replacing Norton with?
Avast Home Edition, the free one of course and probably some of the other programs everyone recommends.

Recommend me some

-MikeDepending what version of Norton it is, you may need to replace other components - if it's an internet security suite, you'll need a replacement firewall, etc.
Personally I recommend AVG and a good solid firewall, Comodo is my choice.
Free, of course.
And don't forget spyware protection and prevention - for me it's Spyware Blaster, Spybot S&D, Adaware 2007, and AVG Anti-Spyware.Could someone post me a link to the program Erunt that is mentioned in Patio's Norton Removal method.

Thanks,

-Mike

Edit: Is this it http://www.majorgeeks.com/download1267.htmlThat's the one.

It can be set to backup the reg after each successful boot which can be handy for more than one backup...Well I did the Norton Removal and Im just running the Disk Clean up now, very good tutorial Patio!!

-MikeActually I had an other method of witch I thought was a good one.
But after following Patio's steps I found out that there was still something left.
I must say that I'm impressed.
Noticed (again) that I still have to learn a lot!

Jonas Thank you for the compliment, jonas.

Solve : Microsoft Excel trouble....?

Answer»

Whenever my friend opens a certain spreadsheet in Excel, it creates another copy of the spreadsheet in the folder it's saved in. So he still has his ORIGINAL but Excel KEEPS adding all these "dummy" files in the folder along with his original. What causes this and is there a way to fix it? Thanks!

JonathanI believe these are temp files Excel creates incase your original file gets corrupted while you are working on it.  If you don't want to see these files try going into Windows Explorer or My computer and finding the location of the file.  Then click Tools, Folder Options, click the View tab and click the Do not show hidden files and folders radio button.  This should make these files disappear. Thanks a lot! I'll give that a try. I've gotta talk with him first to see if he wants to actually delete them or just hide them. Is there a way to keep excel from making those files at all? I don't think it's a good idea to turn this option off incase of a power outage or corrupt file.  This enables you to recover your file without losing any or much of it.  If your friend doesn't mind not having a temporary backup I believe I found a way to turn this off.  In Excel 2003, click Tools, Options, and select the Save tab.  Under workbook options, check disable autorecovery.  I believe this should stop the temp files from being CREATED.  Again, I don't think this is a good idea.
Hope this helps.
Thanks for the help! I'll talk with him and see what he wants to do about it. For now I've just hidden all the files that were in there. I guess he could go in and manually hide them all but we'll see what he wants to do. Again, thanks for your help!     Your welcome.

Solve : Moving from OE to Outlook 2000, with multiple identities?

Answer»

I would like to move from Outlook Express (on Windows XP) to Outlook 2000.  I have multiple identities established in OE.  I have found a variety of answers to this QUESTION already, most of which say Outlook doesn't support multiple identities, a handful of which say it does, but then the instructions for migration don't quite seem to pan out.  Does ANYBODY know definitely if there is a WAY to migrate multiple identities from OE to Outlook 2000?  If not, then do all identities GET migrated to the single Outlook IDENTITY, or does the import/export process somehow choose just a single identity to migrate?

Any help on this matter is greatly appreciated.
