Solve : Effectiveness of PC "optomizing" software?? |
Answer» I was inquiring as to the effectiveness of these types of programs? Is there anyone(s) in particular that are better than others? Is it worth the money for these programs? You want to optimize memory? Turn off the PC. Once power stops flowing through your memory, the entire flash storage is cleared. ? flash? I don't think PCs use Flash memory for their main RAM Either way, I used to use a neat little program called "RAMpage", it had the ability to "free" memory, but in general that just moved everything to the pagefile. It was good for displaying free RAM in the notification area, that's what I mainly used it for. the "memory optimization" routines are basically a single call. "GlobalCompact" "analogX maxmem uses a unique and revolutionary algorithm to optimize it's memory, something that engineers took months to develop. Code: [Select]int Optimize() { if (GlobalCompact()) GlobalCompact() else GlobalCompact() && !GlobalCompact(); } Isn't RAM volatile flash memory?it's not Flash memory it's DRAM. Flash memory is, by definition, never volatile. DRAM stores each bit in a separate capacitor, and it needs to be constantly "charged" (DRAM refresh) to keep the data intact. Flash Memory uses transistors. Flash memory only uses power when data is read from/written to it, and keeps it's data when power is no longer applied. More specifically, Flash Memory is really a type EEPROM, or Electrically Erasable Programmable Read-Only Memory; however, unlike say, BIOS chips, Flash Memory devices generally use a much larger block size and have much faster erase cycles, which was the main drawback of using EEPROM type memory for transient data storage to begin with. Hmmmm all right. Thanks for that. Quote from: BC_Programmer on August 19, 2009, 02:15:19 AM DRAM stores each bit in a separate capacitor, and it needs to be constantly "charged" (DRAM refresh) to keep the data intact. Flash Memory uses transistors. Just to expand a little on this, not only does DRAM need constant refreshing, but DRAM loses it's contents when the computer is powered off because that Dynamic recharge is no longer present, I think that's what you meant by storage being "cleared" Carbon Quote from: BC_Programmer on August 19, 2009, 02:15:19 AM More specifically, Flash Memory is really a type EEPROM, or Electrically Erasable Programmable Read-Only Memory; however, unlike say, BIOS chips, Flash Memory devices generally use a much larger block size and have much faster erase cycles, which was the main drawback of using EEPROM type memory for transient data storage to begin with. When you say "bios chips" I assume you're talking about the PROM chips that were used before EEPROM? The one's that could only be written to once, and had to be replaced with a whole new chip to update the BIOS? Technically, EEPROM chips are used for BIOS storage now days because they're so easily "programmable" (making them easy to update or "flash") I'm sure you knew that, but I just wanted to make the distinction for Carbon.. No. I'm talking about EEPROM. they use the same tech, but as I said flash memory uses a larger block size in the control circuitry, the actual storage is the same, just the controller has been optimized. (erase-rate is a bit more important with a dynamically rewritable flash drive then with a BIOS chip.). BIOS chips have come in several versions- the original ROM chip, whose contents were physically "engraved" into the circuits- then the PROM, whereby the chip was burned by blowing specific transistors circuits to represent 0's and 1's- then the EPROM, which could be erased by exposing it to ultraviolet light... there were a few others, but I don't have them ALL memorized. nowadays, THOUGH, BIOS chips are Flash memory devices, just like in a flash drive. Quote from: BC_Programmer on August 19, 2009, 08:42:03 AM BIOS chips have come in several versions- the original ROM chip, whose contents were physically "engraved" into the circuits- then the PROM, whereby the chip was burned by blowing specific transistors circuits to represent 0's and 1's- then the EPROM, which could be erased by exposing it to ultraviolet light... there were a few others, but I don't have them ALL memorized. nowadays, though, BIOS chips are Flash memory devices, just like in a flash drive.interesting...I always thought that "rom" chips are PROM chips, after being burned In other words, after they're burned they are ROM chips because they loose the "P" in PROM and they're no longer "Programmable", like a worm disc, "write once read many". Didn't realize there was another verison of "rom" that came before...essentially- yes, they would become, functionally, simply a "ROM" chip. however remember that, unlike the earlier hard-circuited BIOS's (used up to around the 486 era) they could STILL be burned further- IE, everything could be made a 0... or maybe it was a 1... either way, they were still "changable" in that sense. http://www.sourceforge.net/projects/littlecleaner/ is safe and free but really not neccessary just avoid optimisers alltogherDon't use Registry CLEANERS as well. They're pretty much useless. By using them you risk damaging your Operating System. |

Solve : How can i allow a batch file administrator permission?? |
Answer» I developed a batch file on xp that will add text to a file. When i RUN the batch file on vista or windows 7 it says "ACCES is denied". My question is, is there anyway to either bypass this to ALLOW access, or simply ask the user permission.i think it is a file permission problem but you can right click command prompt click run as administrator and type the name of your batch file (you MAY NEED to cd to the correct directory)Or just run your batch file as Admin. (Right click it)Yea i thought of that, see the problem with that is the program autoruns off the cd, id rather not have to tell the user to navigate throughout the cd to find the file then choose administrator. Is there anyway to make the program as the user for permission. I was thinking of making it an .exe file, im pretty sure windows will then ask the user for permission when it autoruns. |

Solve : Can I install XP with just the update disk????? |
Answer» OK I seriously messed up....I wanted my older PROGRAMS to work on my laptop which came equiped with Vista....I wanted XP. So I have an XP update disk and it wouldn't let me install it. So I wiped my laptop and now I can't install the XP update disk...it says I need the Full Version.....Please TELL me I don't have to spend more money to fix this??hate to tell u,but an update CD is not a full version of a OS.It will not load a OS. U could try the RESTORE disc your laptop came with. Also try contacting the laptop manufacture for a restore disc. I now Dell will charge around $15.00 US dollars for one. So I wiped my laptop and now I can't install the XP update disk...it says I need the Full Version.....Please tell me I don't have to spend more money to fix this?? In the future, most of your programs will probably work fine with Vista, just ask us what difficulties you run into when you run into them. Just reinstall Vista from the disks that came with the laptop. All you need is the install disk from any previous (qualifying) version of Windows. Boot to the XP upgrade disk and start the installation. At some point it will ask you to verify that you OWN an earlier version of Windows (ME, 98, XP, etc) by inserting the setup disk from that version. You can then FINISH the install process. |

Solve : Image Burning vs Cloning Definitions and uses?? |
Answer» I WANTED to slipstream my windows which doesn't seem too DIFFICULT but am somewhat confused on cloning vs image burning. When would I clone software and when would I choose image burning. Which one gives me a bootable cd? For example If I use burnimage, is the resulting cd a bootable cd? A clone burn is an exact image of whatever HDD is imaged at the time and can be made bootable depending on the imaging software itself... |

Solve : A Brand "NEW" Idea...on "Autoruns" BUT who'll gonna implement it?? |
Answer» Hello Folks! you have to figure out what it could be?!! HE doesn't have to do anything. Besides- running a scan would- get this - scan HIS computer, which will probably have different results. I'm sure you know what that image is, right? Missing item? likely a plugin that the scanner uses. It's not the first false positive from AVG - one of the reasons, I don't recommend it anymore. sysinfo.org web site has been out there for ever, and it's probably the very first site, which started to list startups. If you look at copyright note, you'll see a whole bunch of computer world icons: Quote Copyright In any case, the site is 100% safe, and you better ask AVG to do their homework. |

Solve : Excel into WordPerfect prints black? |
Answer» Hopefully someone can help me with this - when I paste an excel spreadsheet into WordPerfect it prints out black -- any ideas how to FIX this?If have Excel, then you must have Word. So, why are you using WordPerfect?Because that's the program my boss has used for YEARS and he doesn't want to change at this point because he's so used to it. Most things we are able to work around - this is just one that is an issue. And it's only an issue on my computer - not his. If he pastes a spreadsheet from Excel into WordPerfect, it doesn't print out black. But if I do it from my computer, it does. It just doesn't make sense to me. (And for the record, I would rather be using Word, but I've gotta use what I'm being told to work with.) Thanks!Let's clarify a few points. Do both you and your boss have Excel and WordPerfect installed on your computers? If so, do you both have the same version of Excel and WordPerfect? If the latter is true, have you compared settings for margins, etc. in both your computers to verify they are the same? |

Solve : Windows Live Messenger...paid?? |
Answer» So, I recently formated my HD so I had to reinstall everything again. I downloaded Windows Live Messenger 8.1 and before I could install it, it was asking me to send an SMS to some number to get a code I had to type in, in order to install, but the SMS is not free. I don't want to pay 2€ to have Live Messenger, I had it for free before. The Windows Live applications cannot be installed in Windows Server, Windows XP Professional x64 Edition nor in operational systems newer than Windows XP Service Pack 2 Is it because I don't have SP2 installed yet? If so, it wouldn't MAKE sense telling me I have a newer version. Why don't you have SP2 installed ? ? It seems you are avoiding MS sites and there's usually only one reason for that... Nothing like that , I just haven't bothered installing it yet. Anyways, thank you for the help! |

Solve : Installing XP problem. Please help!? |
Answer» Hi everyone! 2. I am using a vaild and completely fine Windows CD This sounds like a contradiction... At this point insert the Windows XP CD...Recovery Console is included on any XP CD. If it's not a MICROSOFT XP CD there may be issues.... Your other alternative WOULD be to install that drive as a slave in a working machine and run chkdsk on it there then re-install it or run chkdsk from a bootdisk. There's a good collection at bootdisk.com.Hi! I went through the steps in your link again and found that getting into the setup menu is impossible. The blue screen apears BEFORE I even have the possibilty of getting there. The repair steps I was talikng about in my last post were obviously wrong so please ignore the last comment. Is it possible that my Rom drive can't read the disk properly? Thanks for your patience... It could be...to find out would just involve swapping a known good one in there. Quote Your other alternative would be to install that drive as a slave in a working machine and run chkdsk on it there then re-install it or run chkdsk from a bootdisk.windows won't install because your hard drive is not being recognized, "its bad" ........ |

Solve : Outlook Help.... Please! :)? |
Answer» Hi, my first post here and it's a pretty dumb one at that! I sent a bunch of emails using the 'BCC:' field in OUTLOOK, but no one has replied which makes me think they didn't go out. I couldn't FIND anything in Outlook help about this but what I am wondering is that when you USE 'BCC:' to keep addresses anonymous do you have to put at least one addy in the 'To:' field as well as I put ALL of them into the 'BCC:' field??? Thanks for any help! I would think you would have to have at least one address in the "To:" field but I'm not absolutely sure. Try sending an email to yourself in the "BBC:" field and see if it goes through.I also think you must have at least one address in the To: box. This may seem odd but you could put your address there, sending yourself a copy. That WAY, you don't need to disclose any of the BCC: recipients. Thanks, I tried just putting my own addy in the BCC field and sending it, and it WORKED Maybe that isn't the right way to test it... I could of course just send 'em all again but I'm trying to avoid the embarrasment in case the first lot DID go out Ah well, I guess I can just wait another day. If no one replies there's a pretty good chance they didn't go out and I can tryn again! |

Solve : Outlook Calender Snafu? |
Answer» HELLO and thanks for your time, In an instant some, not all, of my appointments for the next COUPLE months disappeared. I still have a few appointments I scheduled, but any appointments made by my assistant went up in smoke. I don't KNOW if something was highlighted and I hit delete/backpace by accident. It seemed strange and I don't know what I did to deserve this, I'm not a bad person! Any insight is greatly appreciated!I have no idea what happened there. But, I suggest you implement a regular practice of backing up your calendar to a .pst file. To do this, go to File, Import and Export, Export to a file, select Personal Folder File (.pst), click Next, select Calendar, and complete the export. This will provide a file from which your calendar can be restored should such an UNFORTUNATE situation as your current dilemma OCCURS again. |
