OK so i tried installing Leo4all on my SONY Vaio laptop, long story short the installation didn't work and now when i boot up my computer it goes to a black screen that says "operating SYSTEM not found", I have tried going into the BIOS and FIXING it but i couldn't figure out how to do it. here is the link to the installation guide I used http://osx86.thefreesuite.com/leo_intel.phpCan you boot into safe mode? I was inquiring as to the effectiveness of these types of programs?  Is there anyone(s) in particular that are better than others?  Is it worth the money for these programs?

Any COMMENTS about "Memory Optimizers" like Free RAM XP Pro or RAM Booster?

Do these things actually work or rather Overwhelm PC resources by creating a mere EYEWASH? You want to optimize memory? Turn off the PC. Once power stops flowing through your memory, the entire flash storage is cleared.

RAM 'boosters' are completely useless.

I have a Dell Laptop Latitude D610, with XP home sp3 in english. But my Office 2007 is in FRENCH. I tried to CHANGE the language to english but I found out that the tools menu where I could change language isn't installed. So I went Office updates and found a language pack to install english. The problem is that I don't know if I should download the english language pack because my operatin system is english or should I download the french language pack because my office 2007 is in french. OK I seriously messed up....I wanted my older PROGRAMS to work on my laptop which came equiped with Vista....I wanted XP. So I have an XP update disk and it wouldn't let me install it. So I wiped my laptop and now I can't install the XP update disk...it says I need the Full Version.....Please TELL me I don't have to spend more money to fix this??hate to tell u,but an update CD is not a full version of a OS.It will not load a OS. I have a Dell with a 3 Ghz processor, 1 gig memory, RUNNING XP home SP3
Outlook express 6.0 just stopped loading.  When I click on it, it comes up with the blue screen that say outlook express loading, but that's as FAR as it goes.  It was working, but it just stopped.  I am running CA antivirus.  I scanned with MALWAREBYTES and didn't find anything.  I tried to do a system restore but it said it couldn't do a system restore.  System backup is on.  I uninstalled outlook express and reinstalled it.  Still does not work.  Any HELP please.

Hi all.  I recently installed a new copy of Windows on an unpartitioned space (which I hear is a bad idea).  So in my lack of knowledge of how to uninstall it, I simply deleted the WINDOWS folder.  The only problem I've had with this is the in the BIOS, there's a screen to select which OS to boot up.  There's the one I'm using now, XP, and my other Windows installation.  However, whenever it selects it, one of those hal.dll not found ERRORS shows up.  Is there any WAY to delete the entry from the menu?  Thanks.i am using vista now but i THINK xp was

I WANTED to slipstream my windows which doesn't seem too DIFFICULT but am somewhat confused on cloning vs image burning.  When would I clone software and when would I choose image burning.  Which one gives me a bootable cd?  For example   If I use burnimage, is the resulting cd a bootable cd? A clone burn is an exact image of whatever HDD is imaged at the time and can be made bootable depending on the imaging software itself...
A slipstreamed CD however is the OS only and whatever service packs and or drivers you want to include...
These can also be created so they are bootable...

Hope this clears things up.I UNDERSTAND about the slipstreamed OS     I don't quite get what software to us or what type of software to end up with a backup cd which will be bootable.  My Nero is so basic it doesn't have burn an image so I downloaded burnimage.   If I use that   will I end up with a cd that boots?Explain exactly what your goals are and what you want to achieve and we'll go from there...I have a retail version of XP.   I have gone through the steps to slipstream through VER 3 update.   I want a back up copy of my cd that will boot,  just in case

Hopefully someone can help me with this - when I paste an excel spreadsheet into WordPerfect it prints out black -- any ideas how to FIX this?If have Excel, then you must have Word.  So, why are you using WordPerfect?Because that's the program my boss has used for YEARS and he doesn't want to change at this point because he's so used to it. Most things we are able to work around - this is just one that is an issue. And it's only an issue on my computer - not his. If he pastes a spreadsheet from Excel into WordPerfect, it doesn't print out black. But if I do it from my computer, it does. It just doesn't make sense to me. (And for the record, I would rather be using Word, but I've gotta use what I'm being told to work with.) Thanks!Let's clarify a few points.  Do both you and your boss have Excel and WordPerfect installed on your computers?  If so, do you both have the same version of Excel and WordPerfect?  If the latter is true, have you compared settings for margins, etc. in both your computers to verify they are the same?

How large is the spreadsheet?  How many rows and columns?  Why copy it to a word processing file?  Is it being merged with text created in the word processor?  If so, is the text a major portion of the final product or is the spreadsheet content the major portion?  If the final product is mainly the spreadsheet data, has straight use of Excel ever been considered?  In other words, instead of copying a spreadsheet into WordPerfect, just add some text to Excel and print the spreadsheet from Excel.

Are both computers connected to the same printer, and that's the printer you both use to print the WordPerfect file?

If you copy a WordPerfect file with Excel content from the boss's computer to yours, will it print correctly? We both have the same versions - with the same updates & "patches" - of Excel & WordPerfect. His computer is the "main" computer & mine is "networked" off of his. In other words, everything I do is saved to his computer & not my own hard drive. We have tried different printers in the office (we have 3) and it doesn't matter which one I print to, it still comes out black.

As far as the spreadsheets, they are relatively small but vary in size.  Usually anywhere between a 4 - 6 column and 10 - 30 row size.  We do data analysis in the Excel spreadsheet and paste it into the WP document, which is our report format. The WP document can be anywhere from 30 - 100 pages with 1 - 10 or more spreadsheets -- it just depends on the analysis being completed. I completely agree it would be easier to use Word instead of WP but all of his reports are formatted in WP and the formatting completely screws up when CONVERTED to Word so he just doesn't want to GO there.  What we end up doing for the reports I complete on my computer is -- do everything but the spreadsheets & then open them on his computer to paste the spreadsheets in - which works but it's just annoying that I can't complete the entire report on my computer!

We've tried looking at various settings but maybe there's something that we are just missing? Thanks again for trying to help with this!!If I had WP on my computer, I could test this since I do have Excel.  But, I don't have WP. 

I upload a monthly newsletter to a website of a church of which I am a member.  The newsletter is usually 10 - 12 pages long.  It is created in WP by the office manager at the church but she converts it to Word before sending it to me.  That seems to work OK.  I'm not absolutely sure what version of WP she has; I think it may be version 10.  And, she has MS Office 2003.

I don't know what else to suggest.  Perhaps someone else will chime in with some ideas.I don't know -- I've only been here a couple of months and I've been "gently" trying to drag him around so I don't know if it would work or not. Best DVD Movie software is hard to find. I have been trying for over two yers to get into burning Movies on to DVD. I do it, but it is never fast and easy. I have used Nero, could never learn Ulead and got fed up with cyperlink power.
Recently, I tried a bunch eith 'Free' software, which should be CALLED crippleware.

Really, the are a COUPLE  that really are free. But hard to understand.

So my question is: Where are the really good software programs to burn, convert, EDIT and splice video files for use on any DVD player? 

 

Nero is so very slow if I have to convert an AVI video and burn to a standard DVD format. By the time it got done I had to shave again.ConvertXToDVD, this is what I've been using for a while, and very happy with it. Not free though.I have been using Magix Movie maker and like Broni i too find it to be very good--also not free--though i believe a time limited free version is available on their website. I do not like Nero or Roxio (or whatever it is called these days).In the end it may come down to a personal preference thing. truenorthI agree with Broni ConvertX to DVD is a great program.  As for splicing I do have a program that escapes my memory at the moment but for JOINING videos into one check out Ultra Video Joiner.

So, I recently formated my HD so I had to reinstall everything again. I downloaded Windows Live Messenger 8.1 and before I could install it, it was asking me to send an SMS to some number to get a code I had to type in, in order to install, but the SMS is not free. I don't want to pay 2€ to have Live Messenger, I had it for free before.

Am I missing SOMETHING new? Do I really have to pay for it? 

Every website I enter that has something to do with Windows Live Messenger tells me it is free, but apparently it's not.

I hope someone clarifies me on this.

That version is a fake and/or some kind of scam.
Microsoft do not and have never used a Nullsoft installer for Messenger. (I'm not saying there is anything wrong with the Nullsoft installer, plenty of good programs use it. I'm just saying Microsoft would never use it since they have they're own installer.)

Get Messenger directly from Microsoft, it's the safest way to get the real version.

I'm currently in a siltation where I NEED to copy a large number of files from several directories on a Windows machine to a network drive. The files will be copied using the standard Windows file sharing protocol.
Anyone who have ever TRIED to do this with the standard Explorer copy function know how horribly unsuited it is for such a task.

I need a is a program that can do the followling:
- Enqueue several copy jobs.
- I may need to abort a transfer from time to time so the program should be ABLE to handle resumes in an intelligent way. I.e. INSTEAD of prompting me every time it tries to copy a file that already exist on the destination drive, it should be able to determine on its own what to do. (Skip if the files are identical, else overwrite.)

Basically these are features you WOULD expect from any decent FTP client but I have so far been unable to find one that can do the same for network shares.
So I'm hoping someone here knows just the program I need.
Freeware would be nice, but if the software is good enough I wouldn't mind paying for it either. And the program needs to be compatible with XP.
Any suggestions are welcome.

My bigger laptop has MS Works on it and I like it's data base, but i cannot open those files on my SMALLER laptop. I need to have MS Works operating there too, most likely. If my smaller laptop had a disk drive, which it does not, I could probably SOLVE the problem.
Now, I did put the MS Works on a DS chip and transferred it to the smaller laptop. Both operate on XP. It's not as simple as that as some installation step probably need to take place. I really don't understand all of this.
I hope I can get some clues from someone.

I'm afraid you will have to install MSWorks on the laptop.You say I will have to install MSWorks on the laptop. That's the whole question. How will that be easiest done?

That is the only way.
If you have a MS Works install disc and don't have a disc drive installed in your second laptop, you can try coping the files from the installation disc to a usb drive or similar.
Then copy the files to the second laptop and run the installation from there, it may WORK or may not work. It depends on the SOFTWARE.

Ever since our IT guy installed Office 2007 on our computer, if we open an older version spreadsheet at the same time our NEW spreadsheet DONE in Excel 2007 is open, when we CLOSE out of the older one the tabs at the BOTTOM of our NEWER spreadsheet disappear and we have to view it as full screen, which then causes our toolbars at the top of the spreadsheet to disappear.

What can we do to keep this from happening or recover our tabs?Have you tried opening the older version spreadsheet and saving it in Excel 2007 format?

I am in desperate need of help.  I have word 2007 and will give a brief explanation of what happened.  i had a loss in my family recently and a suggestion from a grief group was to write a letter to my loved one which i did.  i protected it with a password and now can't remember what it is.  I have a feeling all is lost but was hoping that there is someway to open my document.  Thanks for any help anyone can share. We don't offer advice on circumventing or recovering lost passwords.
We have no way of KNOWING whether people have truly lost a password or is just trying to gain access to something they shouldn't.Surely the addressee is the person who needs the password?

I am the addressee.  My son passed away in JANUARY and i have not been able to cope with this very well hench the grief group and the suggestion of a letter written to him.  unfortunately due to the medication the doctor has put me on i forget things and unfortuantely the password was one of those things.  i know there are people out there trying to get into other people's things but let me assure you i am not one of them.  just wanted to recover the partial letter i had written to my son so that i could finish it.I am sure that with a moment or two of thought you could come up with something to type into Google.

Does anyone know good free password protect program that will encompass folders? I have NUMEROUS documents in separate files that I wish to protect.
I have looked at Reference NUMBER: CH000705 but only Folder Guard - A commercial version seems to do the job.

My computer is not networked. I would prefer not to have to log myself on each time. I would really like to password protect a number of folders & back these  up to a flash drive STILL protected..Having had a bad experience with 'Cryptainer' [please see separate post]I have bought a flash drive with password protection. This does the job, although not on the hard disc.

Does ANYONE have a neat and clean way to print a list of a directorys contents.
A SIMPLE screen capture of windows explorer with all folders open shows only the folders and the screen capture pasted into my favorite digital imaging program comes out a bit fuzzy.
I'm trying to make covers for my PC back-ups which are on CD and to actually see all contents of my PC (sorting for clean up).

I have not had problems running WMV. clips until recently.

utube clips will run fine, but wmv. files EMAILED to me run but the screen goes black every second and flashes a moment of the clip running then goes black again.

Also, I don't see any evidence of an anti-virus.  Only a firewall...  What protection do you have?  Is it disabled?



As for your speed issues...I can't pinpoint what might be slowing things down.  Perhaps you should download Process Explorer and look for any processes that appear to be hogging up your resources.  I've had experience with Google Desktop causing lag, so that could be a contributor, but maybe not.Thanks for the advice I'll try.

Jonas Open HijackThis and scan.  When the scan is complete, locate that entry I posted and put a checkmark next to it.  Then close all windows (except for HijackThis) and click on Fix Checked.  The site isn't exactly malicious, but it's best to avoid it.


As for forecasting software...have you tried Weatherbug?  I haven't used it, but perhaps it has a desktop function.  I believe Yahoo! Widgets might have something like this.  Keep in mind, though, that I haven't used these programs.  I know they exist, but I don't know much about them.  But as far as I know, they're legit.I'll try what you suggested.

Make sure no part of it is actively running when you TRY to reinstall. There should also be an icon in the TuneUp program group to uninstall. You may also want to try Ccleaner in the ISSUES tab after all of this is done.

Was this a legal copy or a DOWNLOAD from somewhere?You might also try using CCleaner's Uninstall tool.  It can be used in lieu of WINDOWS Add or Remove Programs panel.  CCleaner's Uninstall tool is under Tools.  I believe, in some cases, it may remove a program where Windows Add or Remove Programs will not.was just a trail version, just can't get it off

I've lost all the messages in my Outlook Express 6 inbox, didn't know that I
could create some sort of back file to retrieve them when things like this
happen, and I'm wondering if there is any way I can get my messages back... hopefully a way that's not too complicated for me to understand.

I still have all the messages that were in my drafts and sent folders, and
still have the addresses in my address book, it was just the messages in the inbox that disappeared.

This is what led up to them disappearing. My computer had just come out of
stand-by mode and I opened Outlook Express and clicked on a new message I had received. The little hourglass appeared on my screen and the message didn't open, so I figured Outlook Express had froze and I opened up task manager to do the "end task" procedure. That didn't appear to be working either, perhaps I was just being impatient and didn't give it enough time to do it's thing, and thinking that my entire computer was frozen I flipped the switch on the power bar and shut everything down. When I turned my computer back on again and opened Outlook Express, all my messages were gone.

Are there any steps I can take to try to retrieve them? Some of the messages were important so I'm in a panic at the moment!

Do a search on .dbx.  Your OE folders are saved in files with extenstion .dbx.  Did you find them?  Is Inbox.dbx there?Hi Soybean...

I found two dbx files... one CALLED Inbox and another called Inbox (1)

Inbox (1) is the smaller file... 203 KB. Perhaps that's for my second email account, which doesn't have as many messages in it.

The file called Inbox has 206,206 KB. My main email account, the one where the messages disappeared, had a lot of messages in it. Some of the more recent ones were quite important, which is why I'm in a panic to retrieve them.

Any suggestions as to what I should do next?Inbox (1) would not be for a second email account.  I suspect Windows added it during the improper shutdown.

I told you I'm dumb when it comes to this stuff!  Yes, it can be as simple as a copy and paste procedure.  To make this easy, I'll suggest just creating a folder in My Documents for this.  Open My Documents and click on File and add a folder named OutlookExpress or My Mail or whatever.  Then, copy the .dbx files to it.  Now, be sure to put them in a separate folder; don't co-mingle with other files in My Documents.  The reason of creating a new folder is to keep them separate.

Hi i was trying yesterday to install a program. when it was complete i got the message. I recently bought a laptop to use when I am away from home.  It came with VISTA os and I was assured it was compatible with Windows XP.  However I find this is not particularly so.  I have a few programs that I use extensively that will not run on VISTA, not even if i use the “compatibility wizard”.  I am considering putting in a dual boot so that I can continue to use XP.  However, I do not know how to do this.  Can anyone help me ? ? ?Hi matt here

jim.mar, you might want to go and read the post i have "Bill & AUTHENTIFICATION" just a bit lower in this forum. Comtrex has given some in depth info on this subject (as well as other forum members) . If there are additional concerns vis-a-vis it being a laptop as opposed to a desktop i don't know--but i suspect there may be.Others will undoubtedly address that aspect. Perhaps this can be solved another way...
You would be able to dual-boot a laptop but usually HDD space is at a premium on laptop drives....
This needs to be considered as XP would need around 15 to 20G to be comfortable.Thanks for the comeback guys.    Looks like I have to load the older version (Windows XP) first then I can dual boot Vista.  However, my machiine came with Vista and I don't want to fool with reformatting  my HD.   I have plenty of HD.  Two drives at 100 Gb ea.  And they are already partitioned to two Partions ea.    I learned alot from your posting tho, truenorth.  Thank you.  (You too comtrex).

Be sure that XP drivers are available for that particular laptop before you go back, if you do.  Supply as much info on the machine involved and exactly how those drives/partitions are set up...

When I bought the machine, hard drive 0 had allready been partitioned and set up.
Hard drive 1 was EMPTY and I partitioned it and set it up as is now.  Hard drive 2 (Ext.) has been used as back up for several years.

I have recently built my own computer and am now simply trying to install windows.
Whenever I start booting from the CD and the hardware configuration is checked, an error occours telling me that windows cannot be started.

The message advises me to run CHKDSK/F in order to remove any errors on my hard DRIVE which is new and shouldn't have any...

Since I can't say to be an expert on computers I was wondering if I'm making a simple misstake or if there is a serious problem.
How can I run CHKDSK/F on my pc?

I am sure that:
1. The hardware is installed correctly and without any misstakes
2. I am using a vaild and completely fine Windows CD
3. The computer can 'see' the harddrive

First, check to make sure everything is plugged in all the way. I had a friend who had the same issue, and he didn't have the disk drive cable all the way in.

Give US the specs on your computer so we can see if there are any compatibility issues, even though there may not be any.Run Recovery Console from the XP CD

Your other alternative would be to install that drive as a slave in a working machine and run chkdsk on it there then re-install it or run chkdsk from a bootdisk.

I am using a Gateway 920 series server as a desktop running MS XP PRO SP2  at the office for the admin assistant.  When she send s a fax from MS Word to the NETWORK printer/fax her COMPUTER crashes. Somehow a rule got set up on my Outlook 2000 to move all my new EMAIL to the calendar folder

Not sure how the rule got there (possibly when I synchronised it with my sony ericson phone or maybe when I used the webmail)

We have now deleted the rule but I still have 8 messages sitting in my calendar folder with no way of reading them or even seeing if they are there. The only way I know they are there is because the folder list shows 8 new entries in the calendar but i have no way of selecting or viewing the messages

Any ideas?Hmmm, I never knew a rule could send an email to Calendar.  Anyway, I don't know if this will work but I suggest you try dragging the messages in your calendar to the Inbox.  Does that work?I don't think an Outlook calendar folder can contain email objects.  You probably see the 8 new entries because it synchronized 8 new appointments from your phone.

Try this:
From your Calendar view in the main Outlook SCREEN, choose menu View -> Current View -> Category
This should show all of your calendar items in a list.  From here you should be able to [Ctrl]-A to select them all, then [Ctrl]-Q to mark them all as read.  Make sure your "new items" number is gone, then put your view back the way you like it.

Hi, my first post here and it's a pretty dumb one at that! I sent a bunch of emails using the 'BCC:' field in OUTLOOK, but no one has replied which makes me think they didn't go out. I couldn't FIND anything in Outlook help about this but what I am wondering is that when you USE 'BCC:' to keep addresses anonymous do you have to put at least one addy in the 'To:' field as well as I put ALL of them into the 'BCC:' field??? Thanks for any help!  I would think you would have to have at least one address in the "To:" field but I'm not absolutely sure. Try sending an email to yourself in the "BBC:" field and see if it goes through.I also think you must have at least one address in the To: box.  This may seem odd but you could put your address there, sending yourself a copy.  That WAY, you don't need to disclose any of the BCC: recipients.  Thanks, I tried just putting my own addy in the BCC field and sending it, and it WORKED    Maybe that isn't the right way to test it... I could of course just send 'em all again but I'm trying to avoid the embarrasment in case the first lot DID go out    Ah well, I guess I can just wait another day. Can someone tell me how MS Power Point VIEWER works when you want to set up a Power Point SHOW to allow people who don't have Power Point to view it on their computer?  I've downloaded Viewer and tried to package it with my show USING the PACK and Go feature, but I GET the message that Power Point cannot find the Viewer.  It asks if I want to find it myself, but when I select it, nothing happens.

Hello all... I searched this one without luck.

I WANT to run a SEARCH on both drives to find any duplicated files, so I can choose to delete them and free up space on my massive 40giga. Is there a program that will allow me to do it? Or is there an option in Windows somewhere that will search for all files with the same name and list them for me to have my way with? What other ways are there to free up space, apart from keeping email etc clean and doing regular clean-ups with WINDOW washer etc?

They could list the duplicated files side by side instead of in the same window though, so you can compare, but Dupe File Finder does the job, and it's small, only 110kb.

Last night I REINSTALLED my computers operating system hoping to fix some system problems that I've been having, and now I can't even get logged into my computer.  I have windows 2000 and it will no longer accept my user name and password to log on, and I don't know how to get in to fix it.  Can someone help me before I rip the hard drive out of the computer and start over with a new one?When you reinstalled it, what did you do?

If so, you can just delete all the messages that are over a WEEK old (unless you plan on still USING them).Or, sort them and delete messages from CERTAIN senders.  Or, create some sub-folders under Sent Items and MOVE some of those messages into them.

I think the basic question is, do you want a U3 drive or not?  You can remove U3 but, if you do, I believe the U3 programs will not work.  After all, they were designed to be U3 VERSIONS of the software. 

If you're going to keep U3, then do not delete the Documents folder on your flash drive.  You can create folders on it, same as you would a hard drive.  So, if you want to store files in a folder other than Documents, no problem.

If you want to remove U3 from your flash drive, you can still install portable versions of many programs by downloading them from portableapps.com.  I want to keep the U3 software and I want to create other folders.
But I don't use the Document folder and it is just there every time again.
I had hoped that there was an easy way to prevent the folder from creating each time again.

For some odd reason, U.S. holidays do not show up on my calendar as recurring events.  I've installed them according to the instructions GIVEN in Outlook 2003 and they show up for this year, but not for past or FUTURE years. 

I shouldn't have to go through and make them recurring events manually...  what am I MISSING here?!?!

hello folks, 'm using windows xp professional and the message boxes that pop up to accept/confirm/or just click yes or no KEEP disappearing before i can answer them, the computer seems to automatically answer for me.  (is this just a MATTER of CHANGING some settings?)

I am really QUIET clueless when it comes to pc's so any help would be much appreciated.  Is there any text in the message box? Try and take a screenshot with Print Screen on the keyboard. If you've never used Print Screen button on the keyboard, post here and i'll guide you through the process.
