Solve : Decrapifier vs Slim Computer? |
Answer» We just gave our son an Acer laptop for Christmas and would like to KNOW which of the "clean-up" programs works the best for getting rid of all the pre-loaded garbage on new computers. Decrapifier or Slim Computer. Can I download these and other malware programs to a flash drive on my computer and install them on his new computer before loading up Norton Antivirus? I would just as soon install as many security and malware programs as possible before getting on line. Any, and all other suggestions are more than welcome. Thank you.Windows firewall will be running, so don't worry so much about installing security and malware programs before going online. By the way, paying for Norton Antivirus should be viewed as an option, not a requirement. Of course, the computer should have an antivirus program installed but several good free antivirus programs are available. I'll mention avast! Antivirus, Avira AntiVir Personal, and Microsoft Security Essentials. I would just as soon install as many security and malware programs as possible before getting on line. I am not sure from the original post if the topic starter thinks that it is a good idea to install as many anti-virus applications as possible. It is not. One is all you should install. I'm not a fan of ANY "decrapifier". You can go to Programs & Features and uninstall ANYTHING you like. OR - if you are computer savvy - you can just format and start from scratch (which is what I always do with a new system) and install only what you like. Quote from: Salmon Trout on DECEMBER 26, 2010, 08:56:37 AM I am not sure from the original post if the topic starter thinks that it is a good idea to install as many anti-virus applications as possible. It is not. One is all you should install.Right, one anti-virus application and then perhaps one or two anti-spyware programs. Quote from: Allan on December 26, 2010, 08:59:14 AM You can go to Programs & Features and uninstall anything you like.True, but, to be clear on one point, The PC Decrapifier does not automatically remove apps. It lists them and lets the user select which ones to uninstall. Info: http://www.pcdecrapifier.com/features Quote from: Allan on December 26, 2010, 08:59:14 AM OR - if you are computer savvy - you can just format and start from scratch (which is what I always do with a new system) and install only what you like.Well, with my Compaq Presario Notebook PC, the recovery disc does not give me any choice about what gets installed. It installs everything that was on the computer when new and I'd have to go through the process of removing unwanted apps again. Quote from: soybean on December 26, 2010, 09:16:27 AM Well, with my Compaq Presario Notebook PC, the recovery disc does not give me any choice about what gets installed. It installs everything that was on the computer when new and I'd have to go through the process of removing unwanted apps again.Yes, agreed. You do need an original OS disk to do as I suggested and not everyone has one.Thank you, Allan. I'm not really computer savvy that is why I would rely on programs like Decrapifier & Slim Computer. I have no idea what is necessary and what is not on a new computer. When I look at my own Windows Task Manager and see 66 processes running I haven't a clue as to which ones can be be shut down and still have my computer run efficiently. For instance, I run Firefox, yet on the Task Manager I can see that explorer.exe is running and using 11,028 K of Memory and Firefox is using 143,452 K +/-. Have no idea why this is, so I just leave it alone and assume that explorer.exe is necessary, too. This new computer did not come with any disks to reinstall which means that I will have to make some sort of recovery disks and that is always a mystery to me as to how they are supposed to work should a problem arise and they are needed. I assume I should make the recovery disks after I run the cleanup software in order to avoid having the garbage installed again? Thank you, you are all so helpful.Let me just ask something. Is there any problem with your system as is? Oh, and one thing you can do easily is download and run Mike Lin's Startup Control Panel (http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml). Uncheck any startup items you don't need. There's never a reason to uninstall anything - just keep them from running. No, my programs SEEM to run fine, although it takes a lot longer to download either attachments or new programs on line than what hughesnet.net states in their advertising for their least expensive service. I don't know if the fact that it goes through a Linksys router has anything to do with download speed or not. I only have the router for times when someone visits and needs internet service or for the RARE times I use my laptop. Thank you for the tip on Mike Lin's Startup Control Panel link. Just today, though, I did run into a problem with youtube. No matter what video I wanted to view today, the video would run for 4-8 seconds and freeze up as if it were buffering, but then it would not restart no matter how long I waited. This has never happened before. I don't know if the problem is on their end or mine?Re downloads - using a router should not effect anything. Nor would installed apps. Internet speed depends mostly on your ISP and the fact that you are not getting "advertised" speeds is absolutely NOT unusual. Re Youtube - try a different browser just as a test (if you're using IE, try Firefox). Quote from: 02bin3 on December 26, 2010, 09:27:02 AM Thank you, Allan. I'm not really computer savvy that is why I would rely on programs like Decrapifier & Slim Computer. I have no idea what is necessary and what is not on a new computer. Explorer.exe is for your taskbar and any open explorer (folder) windows, as well as the desktop. Making the recovery disks before or after won't make a difference. They always restore the computer to a factory image. |

Solve : Odd sound (software I think) problem? |
Answer» I have quite a peculiar sound problem on the computer I am USING right now. Whenever a sound comes out it makes an echo sort of like a feedback loob or someone on ventrilo puting they microphone to their speaker. It does not create a feedback loop, rather an odd echo that slowly fades and makes it difficult to use skype and makes listening to videos on Youtube annoying. Any help would be appreciated. This problem persists even if the computer is turned off What do you mean? Quote from: stefun999 on December 23, 2010, 06:22:29 PM This problem persists even if the computer is turned off ...Are you saying you hear this unusual noise even when the computer is turned off? Do you ALSO hear the noise with your headphones with the computer turned off? If you unplug the computer, do you still hear it? What type (dialup, DSL, cable) of Internet service do you use? Has this remained the same during the several years you've noticed this odd sound? During this time period, were you using this same computer? What make and model is it? Do you use onboard sound or an add-on sound CARD? If you've had this problem for several years, why are you just now inquiring about it? |

Solve : Software registration problem? |
Answer» I downloaded a software from the internet, but at first, there was no NOTIFICATION that it was a trial version. Then very much later I saw a prompt telling me to update the version of the software I was using which i I did. the next DAY I saw a count down telling me the the free version would expire in 10days. I l later installed the software for a friend and the moment he updated he saw the prompt, installing it for another person, i now told the friend not update and since then he has been using COS he has updated since then. My bright idea: You had the trial, now pay the price. Cracking trial versions is piracy. Agreed, stop wanting something for nothing. On that note... Topic Closed. |

Solve : What torrent client are you using?? |
Answer» I am with bitcomet but a guy from this forum told me that its not a really good program to use. So.. what torrent client are you using and do you like it ? What guy, and what reason did he give? There is very little difference between BT clients. Please note that we do not discuss PIRACY on this site. I use Vuze myself. it shows the IP's you are connected toI thought they all did that...I thought that only some did. Limewire for instance (i may be wrong here, its been awhile since I've used it) did not show the ip ADDRESS's of the host but only that the file was being downloaded from "X" amount of sources.μTorrent here+1 for uTorrent Limewire is gone, btw.Ya, I remember them getting the cease and desist order. Just using it for example purposes.Did you hear about this? http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2372412,00.asp Quote from: Allan on November 25, 2010, 02:24:21 PM I also use Vuze.Me too. Quote from: br3akth3w1nd on November 27, 2010, 02:12:25 PM Isnt vuze too hard on the computer? I remember bringing my prev computer to its knees.. Is is worth it? Solve : Going from Windows 2000 to Windows 7? |
Answer» I didn't know if this should go under software or hardware. I have a fairly recent machine I built using an Asus P5N-E SLI MOBO and I kept Windows 2000 because I had no problems with it. I'm now building a new machine on an Asus P7H55-M PRO board and I'm putting Windows 7 64-bit on it. I'd like to transfer my email PROFILES and other settings from FIREFOX, Thunderbird and move other programs I use often. Would it be easier to use something like Laplink PCMover or just put my old HDD in temporarily and try to transfer the settings and programs by hand? Quote transfer my email profiles and other settings from Firefox, ThunderbirdYou can do it by simply using MozBackup: http://mozbackup.jasnapaka.com/ Quote and move other programs I use oftenYou can't. Programs have to be reinstalled. Thanks Broni. I didn't know about MozBackup. I figured I would have to reinstall the programs but I was wondering if there was an easy way to transfer the settings, like license info and such. I'm not sure where that all is and was just trying to make the job a little easier. Thanks for the help.Sure thing |

Solve : Outlook - automatic reply to e-mail messages? |

Answer» Every time I receive an e-mail message in my POP3 account, Outlook sends a reply message to the sender stating that I'm on vacation. Some time ago, I was experimenting to see if I could set up such a message and apparently I was succseeful. The problem is I'm not sure how I did it and I would like to make it stop. I have gone through all of my RULES and alerts and can't find a rule which would do this. I have run a search on my entire hard drive to find a file containing the words in the reply message that gets sent. I have searched for .oft files and RWZ files and can't find any. |

Solve : I cannot access my C drive by double clicking? |
Answer» I recently tried to NETWORK my windows XP Home laptop with another laptop RUNNING XP Professional using Ethernet cables and a 8 PORT hub. I was not successful but later on i found out that i could not ACCESS my C drive by double clicking. I used avg to scan my drive but it showed no virus was present. I still cant access my C drive. The only way i can do it is by using the address bar in explorer. i also noticed that I cannot enable the show all hidden files option in folder options. i could not access my C drive by double clickingThrough My Computer? What happens, when you double click? When i double click a window pops up with a list of programs asking me to select the program i want to use to open. I think i have found the problem. I had a version of comodo firewall that was more recent than the one i was running so i decided to install it. During the installation it asked me if i wanted it to scan my system, so i let it scan my system. during the scan it found autorun files that were located on my drives and a trojan located in the system 32 folder. The name of the trojan has online game in it. dont remember the full name. I think i must have got the trojan while playing online game at yahoo. Can any of you say why my antivirus (AVG antivirus) didnt find it?There is no perfect antimalware tool. Most likely, your problem was that copy of "autorun.inf" file. You should also install AVG Anti-Spyware. Virus programs are not that great at spotting Trojans. This is why you need multi-layered protection. AVG A/S probably would have picked it up.... |

Solve : DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME (CANADA)? |
Answer» This is no biggie, but just an annoyance - Ontario has decided to start DST three weeks early this year and a little programme I have running called DS CLOCK {http://www.dualitysoft.com/dsclock/?about&version=} which synchronizes with various time servers around the world will not change - every time I ask it to run a time check it backs up an hour. I have e-mailed the programme manager twice without response - has anyone come across a PATCH for this programme - it has a neat little ALWAYS on display which can be placed anywhere on the screen and gives the time and date over whatever is running. Here Ya Go...ianbell, does Windows show the correct time? If so, then DS CLOCK does not automatically synchronize with Windows, right? If that's the case, the link patio posted may not solve the problem with DS CLOCK, it seems to me, since it's a Windows update. I believe Windows users who've been getting their automatic updates already have the update needed for the new daylight savings time dates. Sorry guys, but Windows update don't apply as STILL running W98SE [so shoot me] - I adjusted system clock manually [duh] which also resets DSCLOCK but whenever I try to run a synchro it backs up both my system clock and DSCLOCK by 1 hour to whatever US timeserver I try, and I've tried about 6 of them - like I said, it's no biggie, just an annoyance, but I do like things to work properly! Quote from: ianbell on March 13, 2008, 03:41:39 PM ...every time I ask it to run a time check it backs up an hour. ... I've used Dimension4 here for a long time, to set the clock. I don't believe it will do the little display that you mentioned. http://www.thinkman.com/dimension4 Using Win98SE here. I just put up with it. In that I changed my time zone, and UNCHECKED "Automatically ADJUST clock for daylight saving changes". If I think about it too much, it gives me a headache. But the time on this computer is right. After that first weekend in April - is that when it used to change to DST?- then I'll check those settings one more time, do what I need to do, and be ok again until the end of October. Have you examined those settings? and could you make a change there to solve it? Solve : MS Office 2003 / Error 1402? |
Answer» I installed a new Western Digital Hard Drive in my Sony Vaio computer. I reloaded Windows XP Home and most of my old software programs. I realized that I hadn't LOADED MS Office 2003, so I started to install it. It gets about 2/3 through the installation and gives me an Error 1402 DIALOGUE box. I have checked to make sure that there is not another version of the program showing in the "Add/Remove" area of the Control PANEL and I don't know what to do next. I am guessing this is a Registry Problem since it is saying that I do not have "permission to load the program."This article pertains to Office 2000, but it may be WORTH a read: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/236427 |

Solve : license question about old/ new software?? |
Answer» we are opening a small copy shop. do we need to buy fresh software and o.s.'s from the manufacturers? It would be better to order them from the manufacturers.thanks for the suggestion. in re win xp, i do not think i can get it from ms. would it make any DIFFERENCE to get xp from a vendor, even say office depot, or STAPLES?I'm not sure but I think you can. I know XP is still sold on some computers.apparently you can still get it from ms. thanks for the input. the worry about getting sued for not having enough licenses, would be stupid. the cost of getting sued would be catastrophic. not worth it. we'll spend a couple grand up front and forget it. thanks Quote from: chovig on July 07, 2008, 09:11:43 AM Sure, you can buy from such reputable vendors as Office Depot or Staples. Another good source, if you live in the U.S. is newegg.com; see http://www.newegg.com/Store/SubCategory.aspx?SubCategory=368&name=Operating-Systems Note: newegg.com sells both OEM and Retail versions of software. OEM means ORIGINAL Equipment Manufacturer. It costs less than Retail but it's supposed to be installed on one computer and never transferred to another computer, as it would be if you bought a new computer with Windows pre-installed. With Retail versions, you have the liberty of uninstalling it from one computer and installing it on another. thank you for POINTING out the diff kinds of versions. newegg looks good. thanksYou may want to also check some local University Bookstores. The Student discount programs are nice however they normally don't stock everything and may have to order them. Good Luck in your new shop. |

Solve : Partition help please...? |
Answer» I finished my new build about a month ago, and screwed up when partitioning my HD. I wanted to allocate 10GB for Windows XP and the remainder for everything else, programs, games, files, whatever. I created one partition, of 10 GB and installed windows on it. After installing all my devices and software i realized that my C drive was only 10gb, mostly taken up by windows, anti-virus, etc. Oy! So I want to rectify this and will reinstall windows fresh and partition the drive properly. Am i missing something, or do I have to create a second partition to make that part of my HD usable? Yes, that's it exactly. You will again be asked how much of the existing unpartitioned space to allocate to your second partition. When you've answered the second partition will be created. You can make a selection or simply opt to create the second partition on the remainder of the unpartitioned space, theoretically 490gb in your case. Quote from: opalholic What really is the point of putting windows on it's own partition? The first thing that comes to mind is that if your operating system becomes so corrupt that the only cure is to re-format and re-install then only the C: partition has to be wiped leaving your data, and other files, untouched on the D: partition (and on others if it's set up that way). The second is that IMHO the system partition needs more maintenance (Cleanup, Defrag etc) than non-system partitions to keep it healthy. If Defrag had to run thru' all your data files every time then that would be a lengthy process. I assume (here I am too making assumptions) that having a solo 500gb drive you have LOTS of music/video files. At last, I think I understand! LOL! Thank you for your help Dusty! I'm off to do the deed and start the process all over again. I'll let you know how it goes. You may want to consider giving XP 20G. Although it'll probably never need it it likes alot of room. And you have it to spare on that 500... |

One trial yielded the .pdf with all the changes made in editing the .doc I altered some of the Word Tools>Track changes settings and the resulting .pdf was essentially just blank pages. The Word .doc does not show the changes. The CutePDF Writer say it just prints the Word .doc so the problem must be in the settings I have in WordAs a test, can you try another Word file, something small, just for testing?I have done that with two other files. One was 17 pages long and had figures. Both were good. They had been edited in Word yet there was no sign of that in the .pdf version which was just what I expected. The one giving trouble is very long. I do not know if the settings in Word were any different Quote from: denisaf on July 07, 2008, 07:47:12 PM They had been edited in Word yet there was no sign of that in the .pdf version which was just what I expected.I'm not clear on what you MEAN by that statement. Whatever you see in a Word Print Preview pane is what your PFD document should look like. What does editing of the file in Word have to do with this? Do you expect to see something different than what Print Preview shows? The Print Layout View in Word of the .doc causing the problem does not show any of the editing that I have done. One of the .pdf versions shows the editing in red. The other, with CHANGED Word Track change settings shows only blank pages.I can't make any sense of this. Anyone else have some thoughts? If this word file is something you're at liberty to put a forum post, I will take a look at it. To attach a file, click on Additional Options at the bottom of the message composition panel and then click the Browse button to navigate to your file and attach it. Alternatively, you can send me or any forum member a PM (Private Message).I have tried a number of things since my last post. I converted a short .doc successfully even when I changed the Track Changes settings. I then shortened the offending .doc and tried and got blank pages again. So I reinstalled Office 2000 and this made no difference. The offending .doc is greater than 128 KB. It has occurred to me that the problem could be because the .doc has hyperlinks to web sites. HELP does not tell me how to disable these hyperlinks.I copied the start of the offending .doc and the successfully converted it to .pdf It ha a hyperlink and that was ok in the conversion. I went back to the original .doc and tried again. It again produced 600 pages, mostly blank. I copied the full offending .doc to a new Word file. Then I tried converting this Word .doc to .pdf and it worked! Somehow I had manged to corrupt the original .doc file and then copying it removed the fault. Thanks for posting the outcome. I think you did some good troubleshooting to resolve this. I've experienced a problem converting a Word document to PDF. I belong to a local church. Each month, the office manager emails the monthly newsletter to me in Word. I then convert it to PDF and upload it to the church website. The newsletter is usually 10 - 12 pages long and has a LOT of graphics in it. Like you, i used a freeware PDF converter. Initially, I used PrimoPDF but I discovered a problem with one newsletter where the PDF document created from the Word file has some blank space where some graphics should have appeared. I tried another PDF converter, called pdf995, and it worked; all the graphics appeared in the PDF, same as in the Word file. My point is that these freeware PDF converters may have some limitations in working with large Word files, especially those with certain features (hyperlinks, certain types of image files, etc.) embedded in the source file. In your case, you've determined the problem was a corrupt Word file. But, I thought I'd mention my experience with PDF converters. If you have a similar problem ARISE again, the choice of software for PDF conversion may be another point to include in your investigation. |

So, are you asking whether you can install Access XP only from your Microsoft office professional XP disk? Here's one Google FIND which says it can be done: http://www.wiredbox.net/Forum/Thread316271_install_Access_2002_on_top_of_Office_2003_(with_access).aspx |
