Solve : Installing xp on a crashed computer?

Answer»

Can I re-install windows xp on a computer that had windows xp but now has crashed? And which one does it need to be... windows xp home edition, with service pack, or can it be windows xp upgrade..., or what exactly.., and do I have to have a license to do so?You can reinstall Windows XP (but I think a Repair Install will suffice).
All you have to do is Boot from the CD. I don't recommend you reformat (completely reinstall XP) your computer if you WANT to keep your files because it will remove them all.

If you want, we might be able to diagnose your problem.I'm glad you told me that, because for this computer I have alot of music that I would like not to lose if at all possible. -- I think it just got a bad virus or something because one day it just started getting slow and I think it may've even started to freeze, and I decided to turn it off then turn it back on and it was "Gone"!....  Now when I turn it on there's only a small line at the top left corner that's flashing.- Did the spotmau on this one too and it said windows wasn't even on there. What's Spotmau?Spotmau is a disc I bought that is suppose to reboot any computer. I've read alot of good reviews on it and someone from this SITE also recommended it. I  like it so far I just can't go any further with it until I get the windows ready to  install. Hopefully this will be within the next TWO DAYS.  Waiting on Ubuntu to come in the mail...

Solve : Vista - System Settings Protector?

Answer»

Dear Forum -

I use Vista on my computer and, all of a sudden WITHOUT having made any changes, I keep getting the message "System settings protector has stopped working". I then click "cancel" and most of the time everything goes back to normal. Sometimes my desktop PICTURE has disappeared and I get a blank background, but all the icons are still there. My questions: What does this MEAN? How come? Should I do anything about it? I find this a slight nuisance and would appreciate your help. Thanks in ADVANCE! Do you use Spybot - I have read that this message comes from Spybot, not Vista.

Uninstall Spybot and, then, re-install.Thanks. Yes, I am USING Spybot. I will do as suggested. Thanks a lot!!The latest Spybot version is 1.5.2; if you don't have this version, download and install it.

Good luck!

Solve : zlib file in Malwarebytes shown as 'insecure' via Secunia PSI??

Answer»

My Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is paid version therefore automatically up to date. I tried installing the latest version of Zlib Data Compression Library (version 1.2.3) but Secunia STILL list it as INSECURE.
The zlib.dll file in 'C/Program Files/Malwarebytes' is still version 1.1.3.1
How do I get this updated?
Thanks,
Mike
Post your question at Malwarebytes forum: http://www.malwarebytes.org/forums/
They're rather quick with replies.I just got through doing that in a thread on the same SUBJECT. I'm not real confident about the response already given but then I'm not real knowledgeable about computers.

I'd go with RubbeR DuckY explanation. Those people know what they're doing. Malwarebytes is an excellent program.ok, then I should click 'IGNORE program' in Secunia, correct?Yep.ok, "ignore rule sucessfully saved"
Thanks again!!!  Sure thing

Solve : Bothered by Spam? Are you kidding??

Answer»

Once again, this is probably the gazilionth post on this frustrating topic since computers were invented. But I just have to find a solution!.

First problem. I am running Windows XP Pro x64 and there is a definite lack of good Spam FILTERS available for x64. When I ran x32 bit XP I ran Cloudmark Desktop and it worked great. But over the past three years I have light spam loads and not so light spam loads depending on if I was running some type of filter.

And right now it's heavy again and to make matters worse I'm just getting blitzed to death with "*censored* Enlargement" messages. Luckliy I'm secure enough in my manhood to not take these all seriously, but I'm just getting hit with tons of them. And it drives me and my inbox crazy! And why is it these types of ads lately? Like ten a day!

So now on to the probably one of the most asked QUESTIONS in web tech forums and discussion groups! What do I do about it?

If I had the money, I'd probably go with OnlyMyEmail, that nice server-based program that I hear is pretty good. I like community-based Spam programs where your mail gets compared with what a huge network of members are getting, like Cloudmark or SPAMfighter. Neither of which work on XP x64.

Do you know of any others of this type? If not, what would be your best recomendation for the best bayesian filter (I think that's what they call it) type, which really never deletes the Spam, but just puts it in a seperate folder. By the way, a freeware utility would be nice too. SpamBully has at least something different, where you can actually bounce back messages to spammers. Know anything about that?

So that's it. Just one more question about this mystery that we all HATE, called SpamMailWasher - but remember, if you use the Bounce feature the spammer gets to know your e-mail addy is "active" and you just clutter up the WWW sending the notifications to the spammers.Who is your ISP?  Can you logon to your email account via web browser?  If so, take a look and see whether they have a spam-blocking features that you can enable.  I used Earthlink for several years and they had an excellent system for controlling spam.  I could logon to my email account via browser and select from three levels of email security.  At the highest level, only senders in my Earthlink/online address book were allowed to come through to me.First of all and off the subject for a minute...Dusty and Soybean. I am new here and this is only my second post. The first time I posted a question there were two replies from two different people, just like there are with this one. But I'm necer sure who the reply is going to go to.

For example, Dusty, under your post, there is no "reply" button, like there is in the same blue box and Soybean's. So say I want to reply, just to Dusty, do I still use that reply button in Soybean's box and do you see it after it's posted?. Atre you then notified by email or are both of you notified by email.

I'm thinking that's the case, so when using the reply button I just have to make some kind of mention of who I am replying to and both of you will get it right?
(see this is why it took me 13 years to finish college!)

Anyway this is going to be for both you...So Dusty, you like Mailwasher then? Do you use the pro version? Personally I don't like having more things run in my system tray than are neccesary. (yes I'm one of those picky COMPUTER guys!)

Soybean, I use Time Warner or Roadrunner internet and I just checked with them and they offer no filtering at their server level. Actually, now that I have been thinking about it and making all of these posts, I would really like to go with a service called OnlyMyEmail. It's got good reviews yet it is a little expensive. $4 a month paid quarterly. But there's no software to install and it filters the email at their server level. That also means it will work fine on x64 too

So in the meantime, untill I can afford it, I'll probably just use the Spam filter that came with my Kaspersky Internet Security.

Thanks again for both of your repliesjanlafata: <-You can do something like that to address your remarks to a specific person. It makes no difference which 'Reply' button you hit - all Replies go to the bottom of the 'thread' (specific topic). Also experiment with the use of the 'Quote' button.

On to the business at hand. How do you get your email - webmail (like Yahoo and Gmail) or with an email program like Outlook Express or Thunderbird? Different FREE strategies can be invoked depending on how you access your email. Quote from: janlafata on July 04, 2008, 01:29:31 PM

Soybean, I use Time Warner or Roadrunner internet and I just checked with them and they offer no filtering at their server level.
From http://www.rr.com/rdrun/: "Road Runner is committed to making your Internet experience fast, fun and as safe as possible. We assist with Virus and Spam protection through the use of some of the most powerful and effective anti-virus and spam blocking technologies available today.

Again, have you logged onto RoadRunner's WebMail to see what options are there?DRM..Nice to hear from you again. For my mail routine I use use good ole' unreliable Outlook Express 6. I have a Gmail account but I only use it as a backup.

Soybean. What a difference perseverance makes. I intially had told you that I had called Roadrunnner to check on their filtering at the server level. Well the girl that I talked to was not obviously that knowledgable. All she talked about was installing their security software. But after I just saw your second reply I decided to give them another try and I got a different representitive.

She told me that if I set up a filter in the webmail, even if I don't use it, that it will filter down to the email client level. So I set up a filter to delete those wonderfull *censored* Enlargement ads I've beeen getting. So we'll see if this works.

Thanks for following up all this for me. Now I can once again open up my inbox and not feel like I'm am somehow a loser with women! Quote from: janlafata on July 04, 2008, 03:34:41 PM
DRM..Nice to hear from you again. For my mail routine I use use good ole' unreliable Outlook Express 6. I have a Gmail account but I only use it as a backup.

Trust that you got your motherboard issue straightened out!

Okay - sounds like you're accessing your rr email account with OE6 via POP mail. In that case, activating rr's spam filter ought to work. However, be sure to find out what folder the anti-spam filter puts the spam in so that you can check it periodically in case of false positives - the spam filters aren't perfect and may stick a valid email into the spam folder. In case the rr filter doesn't meet your expectations, take a look here (http://www.maclean-nj.com/compute/oespamblocking.htm) to implement spam control via OE.

Finally, FYI, you can set up your Gmail account to be accessed by OE, if you wish. Look here: http://mail.google.com/support/bin/topic.py?topic=12805.

Best of luck!

So Dusty, you like Mailwasher then? Do you use the pro version? Personally I don't like having more things run in my system tray than are neccesary. (yes I'm one of those picky computer guys!)

I do not use the pro version, never found it necessary to upgrade.  Mailwasher needn't run in the background and, IMHO, it should only be run to check the emails awaiting you in whatever mail service is set to default, then closed.  I.E. Mailwasher delivers details of emails before you download them to your pc.  You can select the options available (Delete, Bounce etc.) and emails are deleted from your email service without being downloaded.  So Spam and any suspect emails can be deleted from the mail service.

I have used Mailwasher since it first came on the scene some years ago without any problems with it at all.  It's always done precisely what the supplier says it does.

Edit: There is only one Reply button for each topic, if you wish to address a Reply to a specific post then just address the sender.  Email notifications are only sent if that option is selected, most posters opt for that in order not to miss a response even if the response is addressed to another member.

Good luckI spoke too soon guys! Remember I said that Roadrunner helped me set up some filters in my RR Webmail? Well I found out that you can only filter whats in the header, subject line, CC etc, not in the message body. And that's where you see those wonderful two words "*censored* Enlargement"

So then I decided to use OE6's own Message rules which allows you to set up a rule for the message body. So I set it up to delete the message if "*censored* Enlargement and a few other, ahem!...words are in the message body. But it didn't work and I think I know why. The spam that I'm getting is contained in a kind of border box, similiar to something you would create in a Word doc. Boy these creeps are crafty! So I don't think OE is able to actually look for those certain words. I could be wrong about that, but it's my only theory right now. Any other ideas on this are welcome.

Dusty I think I might give Mailwasher a TEST flight. But (and I know this will drive you crazy with this thinking) isn't it really just the same as opening up your email client and deleting the bad stuff in there? I mean your still having to delete something right? Or am I not getting it? I'll probably have to try it to understand. Hope it works on XP x64. Also what about Norton Anti-Spam. Heard anything good about that?

DRM...Thanks for asking about my motherboard issues. What ended up happening is that because I've been through so many of them now, and still have two of them that are being RMA'd, I just put that steady, reliable ASUS on that I bought. But it only runs XP. So I threw on XP x64 and am having such a blast with it, that I may wait awhile before I go back to Vista. Besides I really don't feel like doing another motherboard swap right now.

By the way, I found a good anti-spyware app for XP x64. a-squared AntiMalware 3.5. Won't run onVista x64, just XP x64. Really like it. janlafata: Glad that you got a board that at least works with your XP64! I think I can say that I never had a failure with an ASUS board.

I never get spam so I am out of suggestions.

Best of luck! Quote from: janlafata
I mean your still having to delete something right?
Correct, but then I don't like automatic updates on anything either!

Haven't heard anything good about any product associated with Norton for many years.  Would not touch a Symantec/Norton product with yours let alone my own.

Cheers. Quote from: janlafata on July 04, 2008, 07:16:44 PM

32 bit versions work great in my experience.

Good luck with the spam!

Solve : Bad performance whilst downloading.?

Answer»

I recently created a new user ACCOUNT because on my original account Windows Media Player stopped sharing media on my network. With my new account it works fine and I had no problems at all. But now I've got a completely new and different problem; every TIME I download in any way (using web browsers to browse pages, watching YouTube videoes, downloading from servers ETC.) my computer becomes extremely laggy. My music becomes IMMENSELY skippy and my cursor doesn't even move smoothly around the screen..

I've tried checking my processes whilst downloading to see which changes the most and it SEEMS to be System (NT Kernel & System). I checked to see if the same thing happens on my original account and it does. I've also scanned my computer for viruses and still no change.

It's really annoying, and I can't figure out how to fix it. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks. What information should I add when submitting a question?

Solve : Cannot hide program ext and keep getting Thumbs?

Answer»

Fro some REASON my computer is displaying all these program ext like .doc for Word files, .xls for Excel files, .exe, etc and I previously did not have this display where all my word, excel files, and everything else had the FILE extension hidden so something like "File.doc" for example would instead just be "File" without the .doc attached to it.  What i want to know is how do I hide the EXTENSIONS for PROGRAMS so IO don't have to bother always typing in .doc whenever I save a Word file?

Also when I copy and move files I keep getting a stop window popping up saying "Do you want to move Thumbs.db" or something like that and no matter how many times I click Yes to All I keep getting this annoying message everytime I move files AROUND.  How do I Hide "Thumbs.db" to prevent these inconveniences from happening?1. Solve : windows cd....?

Answer»

how do i use windows cd to formatWhen you format a computer hard drive you will lose everything that is on the drive. Therefore, it is very important to back up anything you might want later. Additionally, if you are going to be formatting and installing XP you need to make sure you have the discs for any applications or third party hardware you use since you will need to re-install your programs and drivers after re-installing Windows.
Step2
Take a moment to think of anything that you have on the computer that you wouldn't want to lose. Generally, you probably want everything in your My Documents folder, and you also want to save things like your favorites or bookmarks from your Web browser. Remember that each user on the computer has his or her own My Documents folder, Desktop items and Favorites/Bookmarks.
Step3
Save everything to a CD, DVD or a hard drive that you won't be formatting.
Formatting a Secondary Hard Drive
Step1
Right-Click on the “My Computer” icon either on your desktop or in the Start Menu and select “Manage.”
Step2
A new window titled “Computer Management” comes up. Select “Storage” from the left HAND side by clicking it once, then select “Disk Management(local)” from the right side by double-clicking it.
Step3
Now in the lower part of the main frame (right side) of the window you should see a nice visual of all your hard drives. Each line is a different drive. Each box on a line (with a colored bar at the top and a size displayed in MB or GB) is a partition on the drive. Partitions are separations of space on a drive. Unless you are doing something specific that requires multiple partitions, you only want one partition per drive.
Step4
First you must delete any existing partitions on the drive you are going to format. Do this by right-clicking on the partition's box and selecting “Delete Partition...” Since you already know that you will be deleting everything on the drive, and have already backed everything up, you can safely say yes to any warning the computer presents you with.
Step5
If there are multiple partitions make sure you have saved everything off them since they might each have different drive letters (i.e. “D:” or “F:”). Then repeat the above step for each of them. If you only want to format one partition that is OK and you can continue to the next step without deleting the other partitions.
Step6
The box for the drive to be formatted should now have a black bar at the top of it and should say “Unallocated” under its size (see picture). Right click on it and select “New Partition...” The New Partition Wizard comes up.
Step7
In the New Partition Wizard click next. On the next page make sure “Primary Partition” is selected and click next. Now make the size equal to the maximum (it should already be set to it), and click next again. On the next page the computer will automatically choose the first available drive letter for the new drive. However, if you like you can choose another drive letter from the drop-down menu, and then click next.
Step8
Finally the New Partition Wizard asks if you would like to format the new partition and if so what format. Choose “NTFS” as it is faster and more secure. Leave the “Allocation unit size” as “Default.” In the “Volume label” field enter whatever name you want the drive to have. Simple is better. Avoid using spaces. Lastly, if the drive is brand new and has never been used before check the “Perform a quick format” box. If the drive has been used before leave this box unchecked. Leave the “Enable file and folder compression” box unchecked and click next. Then on the next page click finish.
Step9
The wizard will now spend a little while formatting the drive. On old or large drives this may take a while. Do not close the “Computer Management” window until it finishes. You will know it is done when the word under the size of the drive changes from “Formatting” to “Healthy” and the name and drive letter you chose for the new drive show up. After it is finished you can proceed to use your newly formatted drive.
Formatting and Installing from the Windows XP CD
Step1
This section EXPLAINS how to reformat a drive from the Windows XP installation CD. This can be used when installing a fresh copy of Windows onto a computer. Here it is especially important to backup all of your important information because upon formatting you will lose EVERYTHING that used to be on the drive. This includes all applications and device drivers, so you must back up everything you can.
Step2
Insert your Windows XP installation disc into your CD drive (Home or Pro--it does not matter).
Step3
Now as you computer boots a little more it will say “Press any key to boot from CD..” press a key to do so.
Step4
The CD will load up a blue screen and then spend a while loading files it needs. When it is finished it will list a few options, mainly “Press ENTER to set up Windows XP.” Press Enter or Return.
Step5
Now you will be at a screen to select where to install Windows to. This is where you can delete old partitions and format drives. The box in the bottom half of the screen shows all your drives and the partitions that exist on them. Use the Up and Down arrow keys to highlight your “C:” partition and press the 'D' key (if all that shows up is “Unpartitioned space” and you have no C: or D: partitions, skip this step). On the next screen press the 'L' key to finalize deleting the partition.
Step6
Now you are back on the screen to choose where to install Windows. The box on the lower half of the screen should no longer show a partition but simply have an entry “Unpartitioned space xxxxxMB.” Select this with the arrow keys and press the 'C' key to create a partition on the drive. The next screen tells you the minimum and maximum sizes the partition can be and lets you pick the size. The default size is the maximum, but double check that the number entered is the maximum and hit enter.
Step7
Now you will again be back at the choose where to install Windows screen. But this time you will have a partition that looks something like this “C: Partition1 [New (Raw)]xxxxxxMB.” Highlight this entry and press enter.
Step8
The next screen lets you choose which file system to format the drive with. Choose NTFS as it is faster and more secure. If the drive is brand new and has never been used before then use one of the options that ENDS in “(Quick).” Or, choose one of the lower down options. Use the arrow keys to select the proper one and press Enter or Return.
Step9
From here you are all set and the installation of Windows will proceed starting with a format of your drive. This will take a while (over half an hour) so you can take a little break.

Solve : Word error message:insufficient memory?

Answer»

Your best option may be clean reinstall...Broni
I have the CD copy of Windows 98SE provided with the PC. I presume you are saying I should use this. Will this CD give instructions, like uninstalling Windows. Does this have to be done in DOS mode?So then this is Windows 98 your working with now? Or is that just the only CD you have? The CD is the Windows 98SE that was INSTALLED in this PC when I GOT it years ago. This is the Windows that I have been using since then. Pretty good manual from Micro$OFT here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/221829
Print it out before you start.I have looked at the manual. There are some questions that I cannot answer and I cannot go to the hardware supplier. It is years since I did things like partition the hard disk. There is the risk that I would delete the data on the hard disk so I would need to do a disk backup before I started. The learning process, the time and the risk hardly seem worthwhile in view of the fact that I was able to use the current set up for years for EMAILS and writing (with Word) without problems. I would like to get around the problem of linking Excel to Word. Quote

I would need to do a disk backup before I started
You definitely do. All data will be lost.Windows Backup is not installed on this PC and it is not in Windows Setup of Add/Remove Programs. I do have Nero 7 which has Disk Backup which I have used but the restore did not work. Nero sent me a disk to make it work but I have not tried it. Excel just closed down with an error message even though Word was not loaded.Do manual backup. Save your important data on CDs.Broni
Thank you for your advice. It appears that the people who copied all the C: files from my OLD PC (including Windows) onto the C: disk of this PC caused a conflict between the two Windows, so causing problems with the one wwhen using Word and Excel together being the worst. I gather the only way to get over this is to reinstall Windows after backing up all the folders and files I want. I gather it will also entail reinstalling the various drivers. I will have to use Nero for the backing up to CDs because backing up to floppies is not really a practical proposition. I had hoped to avoid such a major task ny learning hope to find and fix the corrupted file.Unfortunately, I'm not aware of any free program for backing up drivers, which works with Win 98, but some of them should be reinstalled with fresh Windows installation, and you can get rest of them from your computer maker web site.
If any problem, post back.

[recovering disk space -- attachment deleted by admin]to create a button like that you NEED a nice photo editor(photo shop), and some creative talent.

or you can google search for button.gif etc and look for some already created. Quote from: samcarney on July 03, 2008, 12:17:12 AM

Try Paint.NET

I think samcarney was saying there are two main aspects to developing buttons for web use.  One aspect is the technical knowledge of the software that could be used for the purpose; the other, the "creative talent", is the artistic aspect.  IOW, what do you want it to look like?  That's a separate matter from the technical aspect.i have assembled  the samples(images) that i want to make it look like.OK, so ...

Solve : Excel if statement question?

Answer»

I need assistance with an excel if statement.

I need to return a calculation to a given field that is based on one of five different values.  The end calculation will have a different multiplier as well.   This is being used to determine potential lease payments, based on the total purchase price, and a rate amount.   The details are as follows:
Purchase price up to $25,000 will have a .03287 multiplier, between $25,001 and $75,000 the multiplier is .03251, between $75,001 and $100,00 the multiplier is .03215, between $100,001 and $300K the multiplier is .03178 and between $300,001 and $500K the multiplier is .03178.

The ending output will be a $ amount that is calculated on an input field.  for example the total input into Cell D32 is $58,999, the corresponding output will be $1,918.05.

What would this if statement look like?

Thanks...I have no idea as I havent worked with excel forever; just make sure you use the "IF" functionThis would be a very complicated formula, so I'm not going to try to develop the full statement.  I'm just going to suggest you SEARCH Excel's Help on NESTING functions.  Unless there's ANOTHER approach I'm not aware of, you're gong to need to create a long, complicated formula with nested functions.  By nesting, I mean putting an IF statement within an IF statement, which also contains an IF statement, etc.   Other logical functions such as AND, OR, and NOT may also be useful here.I went ahead and TESTED a formula.  Here's what I came up with, where B1 is the input cell:

=IF(B1<25000,B1*0.03287,(IF(B1<=75000,B1*0.03251,IF(B1<=100000,B1*0.03215,(IF(B1<=300000,B1*0.03178,B1*0.03178))))))

I stopped at 300000 because you show the same multiplier between $100,001 and $300K and between $300,001 and $500K.  In other words, any amount over $100,001 is subject to a multiplier of .03178.Soybean,

Thnaks.  I new the formula was a nested formula, my error came with the last nested "If" statement.

Many Thanks.

Solve : Best Office suite?

Answer»

Hi all!! I am a newbie in this forum.. My dad has recently shifted to his new office and he needs a new office suite..As it is he's gonna buy so I am thinking of upgrading my personal pc as well. I suggested him the Microsoft Office 2007 Professional. What do you say guys? Shall we go for it? Also the price I found here http://ecostsoftware.com was £291 and pc WORLD is having the same for £350 http://www.pcworld.co.uk/martprd/product/seo/652219. I want to know why is there such a huge difference between the prices when the product is da same? I am really confused. Dont wanna suggest something wrong to my dad and get my pocket money screwed up..Help Guys!! Thanks in advance..

I'm not familiar with http://ecostsoftware.com but it seems to be legitimate.  Yes, the price difference between the two sites is substantial, but I don't think the prices on http://ecostsoftware.com are any indication of pirated/illegal software.  If you come across MS Office selling for, say, a third or less than the normal retail price, that's when you really need to be suspicious.  So, I would buy from http://ecostsoftware.com

If either you or your father already have an older version of MS Office, an upgrade version of Office 2007, rather than a full version, will save money.  And, you might also review the differences between versions of MS Office 2007.  For example, if you have no need for Access, then the Standard EDITION may be quite adequate for you.

And, then, there's an entirely free alternative: OpenOffice.org.OpenOffice is far far different... Works slowly, not so stable.
If you pay money better have a GOOD tool instead of cheap. One my friend is a   web-site  designer, he likes to test software. Once he took a visualoffice from SP-S.COM and together with openofiice they freeze his Win2000.  This is your choice where to gO  and what  to  do, but openofiice not good enough for a business. When you    buy  a good tool for business, you saves more, than few hundreds.  Suddenly, good   Software cost money

Open Office works perfectly fine on my computer.Hey Afie!! Even I agree that the price difference between http://www.ecostsoftware.com and http://www.pcworld.com is substantial. I went through the site and I think its fine. I mean its a real good deal and even to me the site and product seems legitimate. Also first I thought you are getting that price for the oem version but I checked and its the standard version..So you should definately go for it..I dont have any idea about open office but AMONG the office suits i think you can also go for Microsoft Office 2007 Ultimate..I have found it here http://www.checkcost.co.uk/microsoft-office-2007-ultimate-edition-english/p/149430/ and ecostsoftware was the cheapest among all the stores.. You can compare its price with other stores as well..I think there are 21 stores available..TELL me whatever you decide..My cousin also wants to buy one..It may be of her help as well. I doubt very much he needs the Ultimate version.  There's no reason to waste money buying the most expensive version if he doesn't need all the features included in it.  To compare versions, see Which 2007 Office suite is right for you?

Solve : I HAVE A FEW HOW COME QUESTIONS CONCERNING ZIP FILES?

Answer»

this zip zipper is the 7.0 share zipp

how come when you zip them  the unzipped file you zipped
wait let me ask it this way

how come when you unzip a file the file unzips and the zipped file REMAINS?
basically you have the unzipped and the zipped

does both take up disk space. ? i am trying to make more disk space

how come when you unzip a file you can unzip it time and time again ?
the file  sort of acts like a storage unit,  you can go unzip.  i moved a few files and it messed them up.  i went to the one that was zipped and it unzipped  again. why?

what do you reommend you do with the zipped file?

Yes, both take up disk space, although ZIP files usually take up a bit less because the files are compressed.

Whether or not you keep the ZIP file after you take files from it is up to you. The ZIP file is really no longer needed. The only reason you'd need to keep the original ZIP is for archive/backup purposes in case the files you TOOK out become corrupted or lost. Quote

Yes, both take up disk space, although ZIP files usually take up a bit less because the files are compressed.
This depends on what you're dealing with.

.exe's and APPLICATIONS cannot be compressed much. (100kb down to 95kb maybe)

.zip archives are also useful when you are transferring multiple files over the internet so the user only NEEDS to download one.

Solve : Excel and dates?

Answer»

Hi All,
I am updating a old spreadsheet and wanted to add some work days down the SIDE of it. The problem I have is that I only want Mon-Friday dates to be listed. For example....

12/3/2012
12/4/2012
12/5/2012
12/6/2012
12/7/2012
12/10/2012

etc.....

For some reason I can't get it to work right. In this example you can see that the first work day for Dec is the 3rd and that the 8th and 9th are passed over because they are a weekend.

I know I have done this before I just can't remember how I did it. I was ABLE to click on a cell and drag down to highlite a months worth of cells and put in a formaula in the first cell and then all the dates would just show up below it.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks

Are dates for all rows part of the EXISTING data?

If so, then one approach might be to add a column to show the day of the week and then use a Filter to show all days except Saturday and Sunday. One option is, with a start date in A1, enter =WEEKDAY(A1,1) in B1, and copy it down.soybean
All the dates are is a list. They don't come from any other data. I am using it just to keep track of the days work.

May this snippet will help explan.

[year+ old attachment deleted by admin]So, somehow, you entered a formula in the top cell of a range and then dragged the content of that cell down to numerous rows below it and the dates filled in those cells but this did not include weekends.  Is that right?  To reiterate, you did not simply enter the date in the first/top cell, you entered a formula which skipped SATURDAYS and Sundays.  Am I right so far?   I think you are on the right track. At this point all I am interested in is to list the weekdays. How its done really isn't that important.

this functionality appears to be built into Excel.

Put the start date in a cell.

Grab the Fill HANDLE (it's a small black box in the bottom right of the cell) and drag it down as far as desired. When you release, a small toolbox button should appear, titled "Autofill options". Expand this, and you can select a "Fill weekdays" option, which will exclude weekends.

Solve : Internet Usage Monitor?

I need an internet USAGE monitor for a single home computer. I read the CH pages on the subject and checked a few including the NetMeter that is recommended. Could someone recommend something more simple than these, as I don't need most of the information that is provided in them? I want only to monitor the real time upload/download amount and the total usage for a given period of time.

Regards.I USE NetWorx free (http://www.softperfect.com/products/networx/). It has usage statistics and a handy realtime monitor that you can set to APPEAR when you click the tray icon. It only seems to be ABLE to scan one NETWORK interface at a time though (but really, who has multiple simultaneous network connections anyway? )Thank you.

Solve : I cannot get skype to work again.?

Answer»

Several months ago I was using skype to chat with friends quitre successfully, then suddenly one day, when  I was talking on skype and fooling around clicking on FACEBOOK, my skype bombed out.  I have never got it to work again.   Whenever I try I get messages telling me that skype installer is running but it never completes the installation.   My friend can call me and I hear the ring but i cannot respond.

I have uninstalled skype programs and reinstalled them, I have replaced Adobe flashplayer ( someone told me to try that)  all to no avail.   I'm stumped.

I am running windows 7, and ie-9.

Does anyone have any idea what is wrong??   Run Revo uninstaller to remove the remnants of skype and re-install...Patio:  Evidently I have used REVO before as it will not work now unless I purchase it.   It doesn't even BOTHER to say how much it COSTS.    Don't know what to tell you then...First, THANK you for using one of "Top 50 favorite words that just aren't used enough", "avail".
I have tried to spread news of word, avail, but yet to no avail have I been successful.
(That's not a joke, I really do love the word...)

I was wanting to know, after you uninstalled Skype, did you go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Skype and delete the entire contents of that folder?
And after, did you delete the contents of C:\Users\Your Username\AppData\Roaming\Skype ?

Occasionally (actually, all the time) uninstallers will fail to remove previous settings/configuration files. An installer may look for these same files upon installation to restore old settings, if yours were corrupt it may have caused problems during reinstallation.

I just looked up on Skype's website, this advise follows what they recommend:
https://support.skype.com/en-us/faq/FA10634/how-can-i-completely-uninstall-and-then-reinstall-skype?frompage=search&q=can't+reinstall&fromSearchFirstPage=false
They go a step further to check for old entries in the registry. You can read their details on how to do this. Or... since this is a support forum, I could tell you:

Windows 7:
Click Start, type regedit. Right click regedit.exe and select "Run as Administrator".
XP:
Click Start, click Run. Type regedit.exe, press enter.

When in Regedit:
Click the Edit menu button and "Find". Enter "Skype" in the search box.
Select the search results (Skype.com says "there can be up to 50".) Right click, delete.
PATIO: OK thanks for trying.   If I wasn't so cheap maybe I could do better.   I get really gunshy of some of the promotional Crp that goes around.  When I ran REVO I was a little hesitant about doing everything it suggested, especially if it involved the registry, I believe I was trying to get rid of WebSmartPrint at the time.    Meanwhile I THINK I will explore what ZYLSTRA recommends.

ZYLSTRA:  Thanks for the response.  I am going to look into that.   I will let you know if I have any success.

Solve : My recommendations for problem free computing?

Answer»

I have been in the computer repair biz for more years than I care to think about, but I have settled into some tried and true software routines that are:

1. free (or close to it)
2. effective
3. Easy to use

I highly recommend the free (or paid) version of CCLEANER. (google it if you have never heard of it).
I also recommend (to keep those pesky trojans and viruses away) Microsoft Security Essentials and Malwarebytes
Accidentally deleted a file? Recuva is a great little tool for recovering accidentally deleted files.
Ever have to replace a keyboard on a laptop and one of the keys was screwed up and wouldn't let you work? Sharpkeys is your answer.
Need to back up your hard drives? Whether just files or sector by sector or a complete clone? Acronis does the trick. It's not free but $50 ain't bad.
Ad-aware is great for spyware detection and removal
Need to create a macro? Try DoItAgain
Not really happy with Windows disk defragmenter? Try Defraggler
Want to keep an eye on your network and find out where possible troublespots are or pick up on potential intruders?
Try Colasoft Capsa 7 free. You have to take a look at this program - it's phenomenal (you might want to have some background in protocol analysis to figure out what it's telling you though).
Want to make sure that when you uninstall a program, you get EVERYTHING? I recommend Revo Uninstaller pro. I don't think you'll find a better product than this for what you want to do.
Can't delete a file? Try FileASSASSIN (free)

I could go on forever (but I won't). If you are truly interested in keeping your computer running like new then many of these utilities (defrag, virus removal, ccleaner) will keep you going smooth. The rest are just great tools to have in your kit in case disaster strikes or you need to find a problem.I've used Crap Cleaner for years and it's fantastic. I RECENTLY installed it on my friend's totally gummed up machine, and got it running in ten minutes. Really excellent.I am a little afraid of CC.  I am afraid of what it might do to the registery..   And I am never sure whether I should delete everything it suggests or not.  Do you have any guide lines that I might follow

Also, what is Microsoft Security Essentials?  And how do we get it??I just tried to download MS Security Essentials.   It said that  I must uninstall all antivirus and malware programs which I have running.  These include Superantispyware, avast,  and Malwarebytes, all  of which I though were pretty good programs.   Am i wrong in that??You only need one good antivirus program. It is a bad idea to have more than one running at a time.
Agreed - only one av installed at a time. Also, regarding ccleaner it is essentially a benign UTILITY as long as you do not use the registry cleaning module. You should never use ANY registry cleaner - the best of them do nothing helpful and the worst of them will render your system useless.Thank you all.  I really appreciate the help that I get from this forum.  I try not to abuse it.    JIM Quote from: jim.mar on July 12, 2012, 12:18:09 PM

CCleaner is what we might call a "light" registry cleaner, or even "safe".
It really only goes about detecting entries that are for-sure unnessasary and/or dead.

I have been using CCleaner on my own and family computers, client computers, and business computers for a very long time now. Even in its earlier days, it was quite good.
I always select "Yes" when prompted for backup, but I have never once had to use a backup made by CCleaner because I have never had it go wrong.
I do not usually run CCleaner unless the entries exceed the number that can fit on the space on the screen. (I am convinced that this is the most technical way to determine if it needs cleaning or not...)

CCleaner support says on its page asking if CCleaner is safe:
"Yes. CCleaner is absolutely safe to use.
CCleaner only removes files that we know that you no longer need. It has been downloaded nearly 1 billion times since it was first released in 2004 making it one of the world's most popular software titles." - Piriform ( http://support.piriform.com/entries/21184736-is-ccleaner-safe-to-use )
Although download numbers themselves do not say much, that is an incredible number. Lots of technicians and home users trust CCleaner.

I wanted to chime in on Defraggler, which is also developed by Piriform.
I think it is a great program. I do not think a noticeable difference will come into play when comparing Defraggler to Windows 7 defragmenter, but what I do observe is that Defraggler supports scheduling which is great for Windows XP, ME, 2000, and 98, and it just lets you do more.
I use it on Windows 7 because it lets me move large files to the end of the drive which is a feature useful for me since I have so many old movies.

Also chiming in on the AV discussion:
Indeed, in many cases, having more than one AV program will quickly render your computer unusable until one is removed. (AV scanners integrate themselves in such a way that they tend to be incompatible with having more than one program running). Quote from: Zylstra on July 13, 2012, 09:40:23 PM

The number of problems I've seen fixed by a CCleaner registry clean are far outweighed by the number of problems I've seen it cause. Wha.t seals the deal for me is that the problems it fixes are usually something innocuous , like a message or "missing file" error on startup, whereas the problems range from Office not working entirely, Photoshop suddenly being unable to read and write to a network drive, and even entirely unbootable systems. Most commonly, it can often break network-based setups if all the network drives aren't mapped, both because the drive specification would be invalid (leading the cleaner to assume the file doesn't exist and that the entry is invalid) or because the cleaner program is too stupid to understand the need to use the Wide character functions and prepend paths with /?// and thus entries longer than 240 characters get truncated, resulting in that the once again not finding said file and marking it as invalid. This doesn't really mix well with it's disregard for UNC at all, which are disregarded as invalid because they don't have a drive letter.

It is not nearly 100% safe, though it is definitely less aggressive than a lot of registry cleaners.  there are regular topics titled "CCleaner killed my computer!" and similar in the Piriform forums. Since it's not 100% safe, any recommendation to use it's Registry cleaner component is taking a gamble with another person's machine. The Disk cleaning component is fine, if only because it pretty much just does things you could already do at once- run disk cleanup, clear Browser cache's, etcetera.

The only way to use it the Registry Cleaning part "safely" is to inspect the results, but if you are able to do that and know what they mean, you probably wouldn't be using the cleaner in the first place.

Aren't they pulling out an ad populum fallacy here? Instead of actually providing any strong reasoning as to why CCleaner is safe, they just appeal to it's popularity as proof that it's safe. That's begging the question.

Windows 7 defragmenter, but what I do observe is that Defraggler supports scheduling which is great for Windows XP, ME, 2000, and 98

Hopefully it just provides a UI from which it creates jobs using the "Scheduled Tasks"/"Task Scheduler" component present on all those systems. (as opposed to one of those dumb reinvent the idea of scheduling things that requires you to run some program in the background to launch the defragmentor). most of them do, but this doesn't really add functionality as much as make existing functionality present in the OS available.

Indeed, in many cases, having more than one AV program will quickly render your computer unusable until one is removed. (AV scanners integrate themselves in such a way that they tend to be incompatible with having more than one program running).
The problem with multiple AV scanners in the background is that, from the point of VIEW of Anti-Virus A, the actions of Anti-Virus B could easily fit the profile of malware- Even the act of 'cleaning' or moving a file to a quarantine or whatever they do these days could be interpreted by a separate AV as malicious behaviour. All the other AV sees is some other program hooking and changing process memory, injecting executable code into processes, hooking system IMPORT tables to redirect functions like CreateFile/RegOpenKey/etc. to point to it's own functions. All of these are the hallmarks of viruses and malware, in the last case, specifically of rootkits. So what will happen is the second AV sees this, and goes "OMG there is a virus" and prompts the user. The poor user, thinking they are infected, and being presented with the typical over the top prompt screens AVs use, will often choose to 'clean' the infected file. Of course, what makes this worse is typically both AV programs see each other at the same time, so every program load will sometimes show an infection prompt from both AVs simultaneously, misleading the user into thinking that the file is infected,(why else would both the AVs show a prompt right after they ran it?) when the reason for the detection was in fact the operation of both AVs from the reference frame of the other.

What usually ensues when the user clicks to "clean" is a battle. First, the "cleaning" AV needs to try to unhook the functions the other AV is using safely. This just makes things worse, since AVs are usually built to detect this since it is a method that could easily be deployed by actual malware to circumvent AV programs. So now it's alarm bells are going off. So the user tells to clean, and now we have both AV softwares duking it out trying to dehook each other and presenting the user with dialogs.

In the meantime, said user is getting nothing useful done and is probably stressing out thinking they have a major malware infection when in fact all they have is two AV programs in a collosal battle for domination, each one running as though the other were an evil piece of malware that is fighting back.

Solve : Backup of a specific folder?

Answer»

Hello everyone!

I am looking for a program which can back up a specific folder on my drive, whenever the data inside changes.
I do some work from home, and am also in college, so I would like to keep backups. But I tend to forget to save the files to a separate location. Windows 7 64-bit or a Ubuntu program.

I have heard of disc imaging services, and understand those are a good idea, but is there one that can back-up just a specific folder, or does it have to be the entire system? (This may be a stupid QUESTION, I am not entirely sure how disc imaging software works.)

Thank you for all your ASSISTANCE yet again! What you want is to sync to folders.  One folder on your main drive, the other on an external device, such as a USB Flash, external drive  or even a network server.
Once synchronization is setup, it becomes transparent to the USER. If you what it to work in the background.
Google:
synchronize folders in Windows 7

That will give you INFORMATION about what Windows 7 will do for you and want third party software offers. Both Macrium and Acronis will do selective backups of files/folders...

Not sure why Geek is goin off on a tangent...but i'm used to it... QUOTE from: patio on June 04, 2012, 03:13:39 PM

Solve : browser recording?

Answer»

I'm not real savvy with computers and just need help with this one annoying issue.

My best friend doesn't own/use computers and has never had one. As a favor to my friend, I tried recording their favorite radio show
for them since the DJ stopped offering downloads of the show for some reason lately (we listen to the show together on my computer or MP3 player when we get together). I don't know a lot about computers but
found this program ("Freecorder") that lets you record any sound playing on your browser so I tried it. It's simple and easy to use
but there are issues with it. When I first used it, it recorded the whole radio show to a single MP3 file and it sounded exactly like
it did when the show was playing (when the show was airing live at that time) in the browser. All I had to do was click "record"
button and the file was saved to a folder once I click "stop" to stop recording.

The second two times I used the program it started saving pieces of the show automatically at random intervals so that I might end up with like 7 files or more for the 2-hour show and some pieces would be like 4 seconds and some for randoms time like 2mins,43seconds or 35mins and some seconds. I didn't alter anything with the program and did not understand why this change occurred. Additionally it saved simultaneously in two different formats and one sounded awful sound quality. Each different format would save into random intervals but not at the same time which I also found confusing. I don't need these issues. I just want SOMETHING simple that saves the file in one format that sounds just like it did while the show was playing in my browser. The worst problem with this program is that sometimes it crashes and "stops responding" just when you click "stop" to stop recording and save the file. As a result I lost half the show now! >:/

I need some simple, preferrably free, program to work like freecorder but without the issues freecorder came up with.

I downloaded and tried "sxrecorder" program which is supposedly free. It was awful. Easy to use but it recorded atrocious sound quality that was nothing like it sounded when the show is playing in the browser so I uninstalled it.

Next I tried "i-Sound for Windows 7" which is not freeware but I'd buy it if it worked right and I liked it. However when I tried it I found it was simple to use but recorded bad quality sound for some reason. I don't understand why Freecorder recorded exactly like it sounded in the browser but these other programs do not.

Can anyone help me with this? I need recommendation of a good browser recorder that is very simple to use (hopefully free or reasonably price)
Thanks!

My computer is Dell laptop with Windows 7
browser of choice is Google chrome and Mozilla Firefox (latest versions)

You might try Audacity for this.  For info, see http://manual.audacityteam.org/help/manual/man/tutorial_recording_audio_playing_on_the_computer.html

I've used Audacity to convert cassette tapes to digital format but I haven't used it to record streaming media from the Internet.  So, I can't vouch for how well it will work for that purpose.  I can say it works well for me when converting cassette tapes to digital format. Yes I did try Audacity but found the same issues with that program too not recording sound like I heard it originally.okay I tried Audacity again and tried the directions here:
http://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/Mixer_Toolbar_Issues#Using_the_Control_Panel

to ENABLE the stereo mix on my RealTek soundcard (came with the computer), which I didn't know you needed to do before but the sound on the recorded files still sounds bad. It is "tinny" and scratchy and just generally bad quality. How do I get it to sound the same as when the radio is playing in the browser?
Thanks!

I really want to be able to unintsall the Freecorder because people were right about that software doubling as spyware. I'm getting ads randomly playing and pieces of some news segment playing to try to get me to some auction website even when I don't see any pop-ups anywhere on-screen but just hear the annoying ad playing. Ugh >:/Is there some way to get Audacity to record the sound correctly? Our radio show is coming on tonight and I'm hoping I can get this issue resolved so I can record it then. Thanks! To address the immediacy of your need i would suggest that you do the streaming audio recording via Audacity. That way you will at least have the program on your computer HDD.It occurs to me that the issue may be more of the playback quality than the "recording' quality. Many FACTORS can cause playback sound quality issues. At least if you have the file you can do things with it.truenorth

When I used the Freecorder I didn't have to adjust any settings or anything, just installed it and press "record" and when playing back the MP3 file (on the same computer) the sound was IDENTICAL to when I listened to the show as it was airing over Sirius radio.

It is why I don't understand that I was even required to adjust any setting in the Audacity program or on my computer in the first place and why when I play the MP3 file that Audacity recorded (again on the same computer) the sound quality is awful.

I recall that Freecorder automatically recorded two different versions of each file when I recorded the shows and that one of them always sounded just AWFUL. The one labeled as recorded with "Applian Audio Driver Technology" always sounded exactly as I heard it while recording and the file that was labeled as recorded "using Windows Vista Audio Technology" was the one that sounded horrible, if this info is any help. My computer apparently has "Real Tek" (crappy) speakers and I had to go into settings on Windows to enable the "stereo mix" for the recording on Audacity program though that did not much improve the sound quality of recorded files.

I don't really understand about bit rate and such but want a good copy of the show. The MP3 files it saved were 320 and  the program is set for 44100hz. I don't know if that's right or what.
May I ask what Radio show it is?

Solve : Outlook Express email retrieval?

I was having my comcast emails sent to outlook express.  Then my computer blacked out on me.  So I put in the Recovery Cd and it is ok now.  But when I go to Outlook Express...there are no emails.  (I had lots on there before rebooting)....do you know if I can retrieve my old emails?Laura22,Welcome to the CH forums. If you would please provide more data help will come.Such as the operating system of the computer. Some criteria of the computer also may help. Some INFO as to what was it you were doing or changing that caused the computer to "black out" would more than likely be helpful. truenorthExplain how you used the Recovery CD. When you started to run it, did you have any options about what to do, such as repair or full restore?  If GIVEN options, what did you select?

Did you not see any warnings on screen when you ran the Recovery CD?  If you did what I suspect you did, which is format the hard drive and restore your system to the configuration as it was when the computer was NEW, then you erased EVERYTHING on your hard drive.  Obviously, this means you will not be able to recover your old email messages.

Your email messages and any other files you wanted to keep should have been backed up on external media (external hard drive, CD/DVD, flash drive, ETC.) before you used the Recovery CD.

Solve : VBA error message?

Excel file with simple sort macro.

When making a copy of a tab( tab is not part of sort macro), the following pop up appears....
Microsoft Visual Basic
    File not found:'C\Docume~-1\lejones\Locals~1\temp\vbcb.tmp'
To try to fix the ERROR the MACROS were deleted.  Error STILL occurred.
Disable macro was selected when file opened.  Error still occurred.
So far the only way to prevent error message was to save file as .XML THEREFORE deleting the vb project. Then open the file and save as .xls
Of the 4 users of the file, 2 do not rec the msg when making a copy of the tab and 2 rec msg.
Any suggestions....

Solve : Lost Internet Connection.?

Answer»

I have a computer on my network that has mysteriously lost internet connection.

I can get connection if I use HTTPS but not HTTP. It seems like something is blocking port 80 but not 443.

I checked my firewall and it is not blocking IE. I also did ipconfig /all and do have a valid IP and I am able to ping my default gateway without losing packets. I have checked everything that I can think of and cannot come up with a solution.

I think that a setting has been changed in IE8. I also checked the security settings and they are set to their default settings.

Windows Vista Home Premium.

Any recommendations?1) Are you using a 3rd party firewall? If so, disable it and REBOOT and see what happens.
2) What happens with other browsers?
3) And if you think you changed a setting in IE click on "restore advanced options"The software firewall that I am using is built into my trend internet security suite and is set to the default settings.
The HARDWARE firewall is the one on my linksys router and it is also set to the default settings.

I have been checking the firewall settings for port 80 an 443, and actually turned off the firewall all together, and STILL nothing.

Earlier today I was checking the fire wall settings and HTTP port 80 outgoing was enabled. I looked for port 80 incoming and did not see anything.

Windows Domain service on port #'s 88,135,389, 1026 was blocked, I enabled this port and I now have my internet connection again. I am assuming that the HTTP port 80 outgoing is COMING back in on one of these ports.

Port 88 is the kerberos authentication system.

Port 135 Microsoft EPMAP (End Point Mapper), also known as DCE/RPC Locator service[6], used to remotely manage services including DHCP server, DNS server and WINS. Also used by DCOM

Port 389 LDAP

1026 DCOM (not familiar with this one) Distributed Component Object Model

I guess that what I am asking is if this was the right choice. It just made sense to me to unblock the DNS server incoming packets.

I used to run my computer only for my D.A.W.,i am a novice with all the other "things"on my computer and would appreciate some help...
I wish you (the people on this forum) all the best in 2010...
Greetings from Holland,Eric...You're not going to hurt anything, if that's the question. But here's a suggestion on what you might want to do:

1) Install a GOOD anti virus utility, make sure it updates automatically, and keep it resident AT ALL TIMES. Run a scan with it once a month.
2) Install Spyware Blaster and update it weekly. It does NOT stay resident
3) Download and run either (or both) MalwareBytes and/or Super AntiSpyware. They do not need to be resident. Run a scan every couple of weeks.
4) MOST IMPORTANT: Practice smart computing. Know where your surfing and never open any email attachments unless you are certain you know what they are. Do these simple things and you should never have any malware issues.
5) Defrag once a week if you like
6) NEVER use a registry cleaner. Period.

Some people like ccleaner. I guess it's harmless, but I don't see where it does any good at all either. Use it or don't use it - your call. I don't Thanks A LOT...I did run a reg.-cleaner(quite often)and thought one of my programs(i now think it was the reg.-cleaner) gave problems(NOT the in the r.-cleaner but in other software).I will do exactly what you SAY...Thanks again...

Not if you ask me.

That being said, I also know what the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT is for aside from file associations; COM registration.

Registered COM components and typelibs that don't exist simply have no business being registered.I THINK,as I was told, that the fooling around with your registry is not a smart thing to do...I am not using one anymore.Your windows has a c-cleaner,I dont think they pose a problem...I must say I am NO computer-whizzzzzz...

No, not at all.  It's an excellent PRODUCT; it has an excellent reputation for being perhaps the safest registry cleaner.  I've used it for years, with different versions of Windows and it has never caused a problem for me, like many other users.

Even so, anyone using a registry cleaner should back up the registry before doing any actual removing of items from the registry.  Did you do that?  Did you try restoring the registry after you discovered a problem you believed to be caused by it?well i was just wondering at his post cuz i have used ccleaner for years as well and encountered no problems.... and yes i backup my reg every time i use it but to the time of this post i have never had to use one  of the backup files. i just asked because i know that others in this forum know as much or a lot more than i so i just wonderedDon't worry about asking the question.  It fit right into this discussion.

I say keep right on doing what you're doing. Whether or not it does "more harm than good" is a reasonable question - but a better one is: What good does it do? My opinion? None.Like I said.....I am NO com.-whizz....I just know I had (2 or 3 times) a small problem after running reg.-cleaner...And NO (Maybe stupid) I did NOT back up my reg...
I have been reading into it since the first reply and I have read that screewing around with your reg. can be harmfull...I do not know a lot about computers(I only use it for my sound-studio and a few other things)...Thanx for ALL replies I`ll take them all under concideration...(Excuse my English...I`m Dutch)...

I wish you ALL a fine 2010 and a nice day....Greetings from Holland(Netherlands)...

I have a very large Word file.  When I open the document it, by default, opens at the begining of the document.  I would prefer it to open at the paragraph where I closed the file.  Any ideas?1. The Shift + F5 KEY COMBINATION is the GO Back shortcut, so if you hit it as soon as you open the document, Word will jump to the LAST thing you changed before saving and closing that doc.

2. If you always want Word to return you to the location of your last edit when you open a document, you can build a simple macro. First, go to Tools | Macro | Macros. In the Macro Name text box, enter AutoOpen. This is a built-in macro that Word will run automatically whenever it opens a document. (Like any macro, it will run only when it’s saved with the document you’re opening or when the document is attached to a template where you saved the macro. In most cases, Word will choose All Active Templates And Documents — making the macro globally available — but you may want to use the Macros In drop-down list to limit the macro’s functionality to a specific document or template instead.)

Once you’ve ENTERED the macro name, click Create to open the Visual Basic Editor. There, type Application.GoBack

as shown. When you finish, choose Close And Return To Microsoft Word (or press [Alt]Q). If you decide you’re not crazy about this go-back behaviour after all, just return to the Macros dialog box, select AutoOpen, and click Delete.

Sounds great, I'll try it.  I love this web site!!  Thanks for the advice

Couldn't you write the documents in MS Office, save them, and then open them in Open Office and save them from that? Maybe that would kind of dilute the wickedness? Or just not tell anyone?

It's the Home and Student version, that's Home and Student.  Both terms imply non-profit use. So if you get a Home and Student Edition, and use it for domestic and educational purposes, as per the licence, and then you start a revenue generating activity, you have to purchase a new licence? Is that the idea?YEP, that's it.And of course everybody does so.Probably not, but I'd rather state the legally correct position here than not do so.  For an official source on the license restrictions on the Home and Student version, see http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/suites/HA101655301033.aspxMonkeying around at home in a small way is one thing I think that if you are setting up a business you should draw up a realistic business plan and include the cost of appropriate software licenses just the same as you would include a photocopier or a piece of equipment.
Right, Salmon Trout.  Software used for business purposes is a legitimate tax-deductible item on a business-related tax return.

In response to your "rolls eyes" emoticon, the situation is this, ImnoGuru: We all know perfectly well that many thousands or possibly millions of people all over the world run Microsoft (and other) software either pirated or outside the EULA terms. It is a fact. Those people may or may not be comitting a civil or criminal offence in their countries. On the scale of wickedness it is not a very big thing. However, this forum has a policy of not giving assistance or approval to breaching EULAs or piracy or copyright breach, so you are not going to see "It's OK to use your student licenced MS Office to run 15 PCs in your company" on here. We don't personally mind if you do. At least I don't.
Yes Salmon Trout, I agree whole heartedly with that.
I couldnt dream of enticing someone on this forum, or any other for that matter, or in such a public arena to COMMIT to sanction the giving of assistance or approval to breaching EULAs, piracy, copyright breach or getting around things like password protects and the like.

To know that it does happen, does not mean you or I approve of it, or EVEN participate in it, however as  BC_Programmer said," a large percentage of people using pirated software aren't even aware of it."as was in my instance.

I personally prefer to have legitimate copies of software for the simple reason there is a lot less hastle in the long run.
