I am used to WMP on win98SE, there are some differences between that and the 8. ...... version on this machine running XP. I have done a web search and forum search and cant find straight forward answers to 2 questions.

1) can I simultaneously run SEVERAL WMP screens or applications under the version 8. ........? If so, how do I set it up. With the version on the win98SE machine I can have an audio CD playing and/or be watching one or more video clips simultaneously. The simultanous CD and video 'just happened' but for multiple video screens I have to, in options, set WMP to open a fresh window for each clip. I cant find that facility in the 'new' WMP.
On the XP machine I have, so far, only managed to get one WMP APPLICATION at a time running, be that video or audio cd.
2) The video clips running on the XP machine are dark, I was having to alter the entire screen brightness etc to see the clips. Yesterday I found the WMP brightness etc controls but they reset to the DEFAULT with each new video clip. Is there away to change the default settings or disable the reset-to-default-with-every-new-clip function?

Sean McKinneyI believe is is possible to have more than one WMP instance running at once - but I can't remember how. What I will say is that you will (repeat, will) need some pretty tasty hardware to HANDLE it all.

The rest of it, I can't answer. If anyone knows the answer to the last question (Re: video controls) please let me know too - I'm having the same problem.

Has anyone else experienced this problem:
After starting up windows XP home edition, My COMPUTER or windows explorer will not recognise CD, DVD or USB flash drives unless they are plugged in/loaded in the drive on windows starting.

I have to RESTART windows for them to be recognised.

I have AVG free antivirus and zonelabs Zonealarm firewall.

Please explain to me how to (or why you cannot) add to a cd until it is full.
What I mean is when you put 20 or 30 MB on a cd that says the capacity is 700MB and you try to add additionaly on it you get a "no usable space" message.
With a floppy you can add on until it is full. Why not on a CD.tigeR2005........ What type of cd are you trying to add to ? ........cd-r , cd+r , cd-rw, cd+rw .

Some cd's are not rewriteable...........

dl65 Which burner are you using? If you finish the session you should be able to go back and WRITE some more but if you finish the cd then it's all overSome discs are only one use only. I have no trouble erasing the re-recordable and using again. I have used CD-R and DVD-R and both have large capicity (700 MB and 4.7 GB).
But if I only put a small amount on a disc, then wish to add more data to the same disc, I get a mesage that I have used (say 20 or 50 MB) but that there is no usable space left on the disc.
With a floppy I can put some data on one then later add to it, even several times until the floppy is full.
All I am wondering is why it can't be done on CD's. Seems LIKE a large waste of disc's to use one when you want to save a small amount, the not be able to use it later to add more.
Thanks for your replys.If you write the data MultiSession, you can add files later. However, there is significant overhead in adding a NEW session to a CD-R disk, on the order of 20mb or so. If you add one 4k text file, it still consumes a ton of space.

If you don't write all the sessions MultiSession, then no matter how much data is on the drive, you can't add any additional files.
Thank you for your answer. I am not very whippy on computer terms. How to I indicate MultiSession when I start.It varies, depending on the SPECIFIC burning software you use.

Could someone please tell me what I’m doing wrong, or let me know of another method to remove Quicken from my Presario 2500 laptop. This was loaded as a package I guess. It was on here when I purchased. I’m sorry if this question does not belong here…looked like my best shot at getting some help. Thanks for any advice.

1. Click Add/Remove
2. Click Quicken 2003 New User Edition
3. Click “Change/Remove”

- “Confirm Uninstall” (Do you want to completely remove the selected APPLICATION and all of its features) window pops up -

4. Click OK

- “InstallShield Wizard” pops up, but in Setup Status. Says “Quicken 2003 New User Edition Setup is performing the requested operations”

Then blue bar loads to 100%.

Another window pops up and says “Installation Interrupted” in Heading. Below title says “InstallShield Wizard Completed.” and below that “The wizard was interrupted before Quicken 2003 New User Edition could be completely installed.” and “The system has not been modified. To install this program at a later time, run the installation again.”

5. Click finish to exit the wizard

6. Bang head on table

*Browsed Quicken Program File and didn’t notice an uninstall icon or file…I suppose I could have missed it, there are a ton of files w/ this program. I assume, since I don’t use it, I’d be better off getting rid of it and regaining that space on my HD.
cladieu.....Odd , but then nothing about computers surprises me any more ..........If you are unable to remove that program ....by going into the control panel and then selecting the Add/Remove feature........I would do this .......reboot into safe MODE ......then go to control panel again ....click Add/Remove programs ......when the LIST is published find quicken.......highlite it then click remove .......if it does the same thing as it did in normal mode .......exit control panel and go to my computer .......
C: drive ........program files ....find the quicken folder ...right click on it and chose delete .........if you get a message that ACCESS is denied .......open the folder and manually delete the files in that folder .......when they are all gone ....delete the folder ........
now click start .....then run .....when the run box opens type ....... regedit ......and press enter.....now the registry editor box is open .........now click on Edit ......and scroll down to Find ....when the find box opens type Quicken in the box and press Find NEXT ....the registry will be searched and if there are any entries there refering to quicken you will be taken to that location ( you will see the entry hi-lighted)double check to be sure that entry refers to quicken.......then right click on the entry and select delete .......Now go back up to the top and click Edit again and then select Find again ....( quicken should still be in the box ) click on find next ........again delete what it finds after being sure it refers to quicken . Repeat this procedure until there are no more referances to Quicken .........Exit registry and reboot ..........******It is always a good idea to back up your registry before deleting things .......just in case you remove the wrong thing .......

The file may somehow be corrupt, but I did see a thumbnail of it. The picture was taken with a sony camera, but won't open with anything I know of.
Anyone know what a jpg.bci file is and how to open it?Why don't you MAKE a copy of it, and take off the .bci extension, so the copy would be ****.jpg

Hi Never heard of a program .bci that's the program you will need to open whatever that may be put bci into google search and see what comes up. I have jst done that and it showed no program you will need to go back to the source where you got the picture from.The picture was taken on a sony mavica cd camera. Originally the picture would open but only the top half was visible. Next thing I know somehow a .bci got attached to the end of it . I have no idea how. I was looking at files in the recycle bin before deleting them when lo and behold there was a thumbnail of the entire picture, but when I restored it it had a .bci attached to it and now won't open. I really appreciate the helpful ideas you all are offering!Hi I would get onto sony it seems you might need a program to open the PICS from that camera.

I am running Outlook Express 6 on WIN XP Home.

Various family members have their own logins on the PC.

I have created different email addresses for each family member.

At the moment, whoever is logged on when the Outlook Express is opened will receive all MESSAGES for all users.

Does anyone know how I can SET things up so each user will receive only their own email messages?

Robwightrob.......Have you created a differant user account for each family member ? It sounds LIKE you have numberous E MAIL addresses ...but only one user account . So all E mail ( differant aliases are coming to the same account )

Hi, first thanks for taking the time to read this. Well every now and then i get the box that says "Dr watsons Debugging program has encountered a problem and needs to be SHUT down. Sorry for any inconvineince" Should i be worried about this or is it normal. Im using windows xp and a nVidia Geoforce 2. If you NEED anymore deatild i will be happy to say! [glb]Flame[/glb]Yea. I have Microsoft Antisapyware Beta1m, Aol spyware protection and Lavasoft Ad-Aware se. I check for spyware at least 3 times a week. They are normally only traking cookies. I have Ad-watch monitering everything and Microsft real time protection going too.Lets see if we can uninsatll it... Go to your control panel... Click on Add or remove Programs... NExt, find Dr. Watson's Debugging Program , and try uninstalling it... Keep in touch...

How interesting... Howcome I never noticed the program running in MY background?

I installed SYMANTEC's SystemWorks Premier 2005 (replacing SystemWorks 2001) over the weekend. Everything seemed to be going okay until yesterday afternoon.

For no obvious reason, Outlook EXPRESS crashed. I then found that clicking desktop icons did not run those programs.

I restarted, but when the boot reached the point at which the SystemWorks programs were loaded, the system crashed to the BSoD. It did this every time I restarted.

I tried booting to Safe MODE, but, again, nothing would run (I wanted to get to Add-Remove Programs), and the hard drive's light was on continuously.

Finally, after restarting several times, the Ghost component of SystemWorks failed to load properly, and the system did not crash. Regaining control, I used Add-Remove Programs to uninstall SystemWorks. Needless to say, the computer restarted perfectly and appears to be none the worse for wear.

I can't find anything about this in the Symantec knowledge base (natch), and I'm reluctant to pay $30 to actually talk to a tech (though the fee will be waived if Symantec decides the product was at fault).

Anybody out there know anything?

Thanks.No big surprise, Norton's products have gotten so bloated that it's difficult to keep them running properly. I have a brand new NAV 2005 that won't install on either of my XP computers, the only saving grace is that it was free after rebate! Thanks for your comments. I've had trouble with Norton products in the past, including a WinFax PRO 10 that repeatedly crashed the OS on booting, until I removed it.

I, too, got this software for free (assuming they honor the rebates). My main reason for purchasing it (as I was pretty happy with SystemWorks 2001, which gave me no problems) was that Ghost 9 is SUPPOSED to be able to create a bootable mirror of your hard drive. (That's what the instruction book says, anyhow.)

Perhaps someone will have an explanation of how to get SWP 2005 working right.

My eyes are very sensitive to color from the color monitors. Is there a software that adjusts color monitors so that they display in black & white or monochrome or gray-scale.

I think I've exhausted all the options, mentioned below, in Microsoft Windows XP Pro Service Pack 2 & Microsoft Internet Exlporer 6.0 Update Version SP2 to minimize color, which has helped somewhat, but have not been able to turn the color off completely.

1. Window's Control PANEL > Display > Appearance > Color Scheme & Advanced & Desktop > Color settings. And also in Explorer using Tools > Internet Options > General > Colors.

2. Changed the settings under Display > Settings > Advanced > Adapter > List All MODES > "640 x 480, 16 Colors, Default REFRESH",.but the resolution is too large.

If this can not be done with software, do you know of another way of accomplishing this besides changing the color settings on the monitor itself, i.e. SPECIAL monitor, video card or converter?

PatrickIf your graphics card has a TV-OUT socket on it, you can plug an ordinary TV into it and use the settings on that. Or just use a black and white TV, I guess.

Am I correct in understanding that the white and gray areas of an image don't look pure white or gray to you, but have a color tinge?

If so, there are several ways to change the balance. One is to choose a different color temperature. Your monitor should have settings for this. Mine gives a choice of 9300, 6500, or 5000 degrees Kelvin. There's a fourth "custom" position that lets you set red, green, and blue levels separately.

The other approach is to rip open the monitor and PERFORM a "gray-scale tracking" adjustment. I don't have time to explain how this is done, but just about any '60s book on color-TV servicing should get you started.

I'm TRYING to install Ready To Program and it ALWAYS stops at 27 percent when i run the setup and says "Extraction failure: return from extract=-9". Having a customer service person available to answer to the phone to request CDs is not cheap.Sounds like a homework QUESTION.Let's see, all the major suppliers use web based software update services... Doesn't sound like a very tough problem to me, since it's been solved thousands of times in the industry, and 99% of the times it was web based updates! We send a disk to about 150 of our dealers with the update. This is neither cheap nor easy. we also provide the update online. This is super cheap and so easy it seems like stealing. The reason for the two METHODS is net speed. If a dealer has a dial-up connection then they'll never get the update online.For really huge updates, I can see the physical media for folks that don't have broadband. However, major software vendors SEEM to limit you to web updates, even with large files. SYMANTEC has no way to update any of their stuff besides the Internet, for instance.

However, the question was efficient and economical.

Are you experiencing lot's of CRASHES which it claims to fix ?No, it isn't crashing. I get error MESSAGES that the powrprof.dll is not properly loading. The error also states that a device attached to system is not functioning. When I RAN PC Mighty Max it CLAIMED that I had serveral Registry files missing or invalid Registry paths. I uninstalled this program because I was a little leary.

I'm having trouble with Outllok 2003.

In the Calendar the date is doubling up - i.e. on the 31 day view, the date is in each days box twice - once in the TOP left and once in the top right.

The date is also doubled on the Calendar heading - it is displayed like - March 2005 (March 2005).

This started out of no where, all of a sudden my aim just shut down. The program just closed it self.

And now i cant use it for more then like 3 minutes before it happens again. Nothign prompts it it jsut happens the program crashes.

I've tried re-installing it and restarted it and rebooting i dont know what else to do.

the program just shuts down.

If i'm in the middle of typing a message the im window will just close, the buddy list will just disapear and the icon in the sys tray will vannish.

There is no warning, or error message, there is nothing at all.

On second its working the next its gone! just vanishes with out a trace! i open the program again sign on, everythign is fine and bamf! the program just disapears on me again!

Since you can't GET into Windows, if your friend permits you to piggy back your disk into his system, you can use his computer to scan your disk for viruses depending on how uptodate the virus program is. You can also download a Virus Stinger for FREE from McAfee use it to clean your disk too. When cleaned remove to disk from your friend's PC and put it back to your PC, if all else FAILS you might have to REBUILD and please use anti virus software.

Can only log on to AOL once, then have to delete software and reload from disk. AOL tried different access numbers, have walked through step by step the operating SYSTEM, etc. Anyone ever experience this problem? Windows XP, 7.0 and 4-month old e-machine. Thanks for any assistance. Try installing AOL 9.0 INSTEAD... Maybe it will fix this issue...

While using FDISK to delete a particion and re-install W98 I have lost everything. How do I retrieve the
A:/PROMPT.Not wonderfully sure about this, but here goes anyway.

By using FDISK, you have wiped everything on the drive - I assume you knew that beforehand and meant to do it or accidently put the wrong parameters in. That includes the bit which provides the DOS prompt.

What I hope you have DONE is made a boot floppy, which contains the bare bones of DOS, which is normally ENOUGH to get you going again in cases of emergency.

Or, if you have the Windows DISKS handy, you could just reinstall. Which you'll need to do anyway - or at least just install an operating system. Remember to go into the BIOS and set the boot order appropriately.plonker.......With your win98boot disk in the floppy drive ....simply reboot ........and if your boot disk isnt bad ...you should have your A: prompt back .....

dl65 Hi Many thanks for the help. I have entered set up and the floppy drive is first in the LIST. The CD player is un-detected. I have re-started the machine with the start up disk in. The floppy drive goes through the motions and when it stops the A:/PROMPT does not appear.

I got an email with an attached file with it and i don't know how to save it to my hard drive and i can't get the file to open and i need to see inside

What type of file is it?
What type of email are you using?
I certainly hope this file came from someone you trust and you were expecting the file.You can usually right click, save as to a desired location. Attachements are usually pdf or zipped format, most other file FORMATS are blocked to save guard your system by outlook to unblock is not wise. If you get a message from outtlok saying it blocked your attachment on a txt message then tell the sender to put it into a zip format. If you don't see a icon for the attachment then you don't have a program to open it you will see a Windows icon on a little white background. If you see a COMPRESSION icon just DOUBLE click on it to open (Win XP) have zip built in.

two files came with my email its been checked for viruses the first file is a- jpg (0.01mb) and the secound is a -doc (0.21mb)

i was expecting it came with a PURCHASE from ebayNow we are getting somewhere, you might have to download the attachements from hotmail by right click on the attachement and save as to a desire location. You then navigate to the saved files just double click on them to open as jpgs and Docs are common files you Pc should be able to open OK.

KimHI the .doc file will not open if you don't have word on your computer however you can download from Microsoft a word viewer but you can't edit or change anything with the viewer
you can only read or print the file.Word document files can be opened by wordpad, this is installed with Windows be default. If you don't have Office Word, it will use wordpad, do you have Word?

i used the Winamp and some VIDEO won't show and it occured an error in my computer!!! acaully i mean the video doesn't show!!! and it just play the sound of the video!! please help me !! Perhaps Winamp can not open that type of video... (The file extension was not RECOGNIZED)

Having trouble ACCESSING my email in Yahoo through Netscape 7.0 even though I am putting in the right username and password. They said to ask for a new password, but when I submitted the birthdate and ZIP code, it rejected that, too!

The Help said to "clear cookies" or "clear cache". What does that have to do with retrieving email? I can retrieve it using Internet Explorer browser.

Don't know what "clear cookies and cache" means or where to find them ...they didn't give a clue.

WBring up IE, then click Tools, then Internet Options. From the screen presented, click Delete Cookies and Clear History. Cookies are just little text files that hold information for a particular site. They can be a pain, but they also hold info like sign-ons to sites so you don't have to sign in everytime. The history (cache) maintains a list of all the sites you've been to. For privacy reasons, cleaning out this does no harm and is actually recommended.

Your cookies and/or history could be corrupt. Cleaning them out will ALLOW you to reset them.

I can retrieve and send in Internet Explorer though.
Any other ideas how to reset password in Netscape?

I went into Tools in Netscape and "unblocked" cookies. It said cookies couldn't be blocked for that site or something. After I did that, I was able to get into my email.
Does that MEAN I can't block any cookies in Yahoo?

Under Privacy and Security settings it gives you options on
cookies. Apparently, I changed those and it affected getting email in Yahoo. Hmmm.

IE works the same way. If you block cookies, you can't access.

A friend of mine has a 4 yr laptop that still runs on WIN98.

He only uses it for the internet so he has no interest in getting a new one but LATELY the connection won't run properly.

Dial up works, it runs to open the homepage but then a window opens, labelled ipconfig.exe, saying there's an application failure (0xc0000142) and the only option is to quit it altogether. Then when you do quit it, the same window MESSAGE keeps popping up... anyone have any idea how he can fix it?

If memory serves correctly, ipconfig is not a valid file for Win 98, it is only available to NT, 2000, ME and XP. I believe the correct config program for 98 was winipcfg.

I would certainly scan for viruses, malware, spyware, and highjackers if I were him.

After that we may have to look at uninstalling the network and reinstalling it.Ok, now we clarified you're on W2K, this is your tcp/ip component. its either he irq conflict or the tcp/ip is corrupted hence you got the failure address and needs to be removed and put back again

I restored my system.in and win.ini after accidentally deleted them. Everything works FINE but windows 98 doesn't recognize any of the programs I had before this action (microsoft office). When I tryed to OPEN it, It ask me to reinstall them but is an old computer and I don't have the disks anymore.The programs are there but I can't execute the .exe FILE. Is there a WAY to fix this problem .

Surfer55That DEPENDS on how uptodate the files you restored are. If the files you restored prior to office then you will need the CD media

I managed to find a site that explained a bit more about the command interpreter problem. Anyway when i rebooted the system it GOT further displayed and few lines of data then rebooted itself again then it hung at - extracting tools.

When I rebooted again the whole screen was full of characters and didn't look good. I then followed your advise and replaced hard drive etc. I done a virus SCAN on her HD and it was infected with 2 viruses and infected about 3500 files. AVG managed to heal the drive ok, copied over what I needed to also.

I set the system back up again, switched on and all looked good went through the boot sequence the ME windows splash screen appeared and then it rebooted brought up the ME splash screen again and then hung in that screen. Thought I would then just INSTALL XP, the disc starts to boot from the cdrom but I get no visual and just hangs on this message.

My sisters original problem was her PC closing down that's why I went through everything and my last RESORT was the Mobo. Do you think the viruses that where on her HD might have been causing the problem. Prior to the REMOVAL of hardware her system booted up to the desktop ok but then just closed down after a few mins.

I have an hp deskjet 3320. It SHOWS 1 DOCUMENT in queue that I cannot get to delete. The status shows deleting- paused- printing, but I don't have it paused. Cancelling won't work. If I have 5 documents in queue, I can get them all to delete but the one at the top of the LIST. I have even tried uninstalling the printer software and reinstalling. I cannot use the printer when this happens and I can't put my computer on standby when this happens. It says to stop the printer spool, and I can't figure how to do that. unplugging the printer has helped, but I can't unplug the printer every time this happens, which is alot. please help.Sounds like your print spooler is hanging.
To restart a print spooler on Windows 2000 or XP, GO to
Start, Settings, Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services. Scroll through the list until you find Print Spooler, right click it, and choose restart from the resulting menu.

You MAY want to try to uninstall your printer drivers and reinstall them, ensuring you use the latest drivers from HP's site. If this does not solve your problem you are into the repair the OS, repair the printer, areas.

I'm sorry, I didn't mention I do have XP. One thing though, on mine, after going through control panel, I then had to go through performance and maintenance, then to administative tools. Anyway it did work. One more question. It says you can either restart or stop the service for print spooler. What would happen if I hit the stop? Thank you very much. ???Often when I receive a Word attachment to an email (I use OE), open it and ATTEMPT to print it from Word, the document locks up and the BORDER of the Word window flashes. The only way out is "End Task". I am able to print directly from right clicking on the attachment line in OE. And sometimes I can open the attachment in Word, select all, copy and paste to a new document and then print. What could be LOCKING up Word in this case and can I do anything to correct this?

So I don't think it's an XP problem.What if you save the attachment before opening it? Do you get the same results?

If you open it directly in OE, OE creates a copy in your temp folder and OPENS that. It could be that your temp folder(s) need to be cleared out. Remember that XP has a minimum of 2 temp folders and if you upgraded from 98 then probably 3 at least.

i bought two programs TOP style pro and CSEhtml validator..neither one will WORK..the top style refuses to validate using the validate option of the program..just says its cannot connect..CSE html validator checks for updates to make sure you really have bought the program and it won't work..it just sits there..the two progrms work fine on an old computer i have..tried that after all other avenues had bee investigated..shutting down firwalls, virus protection etc..nothing worked..even did the registry ..clean it out and tried again..nothing..since it works on the old computer i am assuming there is a conflict with something but i need to know how to find this out

I recently wiped my HD due to the fact that the Trojan I had (from the virus board) and the fact I was unable to sucessfully install Norton SW 2005.

On my ATA Drive (which was not wiped), I had encryped some files to keep outsiders from searching thru them, but now that I got the new Installation of WINDOWS XP in and running but I forgot to Decrypt the Zip Files I encrypted before the wipe! Now I can't even access the files! How do I break the Encryption?Here's what WinZip has to say:

There are crack programs you can find on the net (some are even free). Using the brute force method, they can take anywhere from 5 minutes to 43 days.

Good luck. You'll have a hard job, if you USED Windows Advanced properties to encrypt your file/folder (folder or file in green), because you have wiped the OP that encrypted the file this also killed the unique security identifier that hold the private key, even if you created an exact username in the new install, the ssid is not the same and hence you are now unable to decrypt the file because the private key does not match.

1- You have to login as "recovery agent" this could be DESIGNATED to the local administrator, (by default the 1st administrator to log on) decrypt the file.
2- This part will disappoint you, you must have a backup of the recovery agents private before you wiped you hdd

Thanks Hey I don't know but backing-up and restoring in XP isn't just a matter of copying - there's a heck of a lot more to it than that. XP comes with its own backup program which is not installed by default, you have to SPECIFICALLY install it from the XP cd. Have a look here

Hey -ANYONE use these?

I used BitTornado a few TIMES when I didn't get home in time to tape "Lost" or "24"... Had it set with port forwarding on my router so I GOT the fast "green" light.

Installed Norton Firewall, and now can only get the yellow - even if I disable Firewall.

It may be a coincidence, but I doubt that.

Anybody else out there use these programs? And get around a firewall?

My inet connection is verizon DSL.

I use the Azeurus(sp?) client and have never had a problem. I'd say that if you couldn't get past your firewall then you'll get nothing at all. The fact that you're getting some data says you just need more/better peers. What site are you getting your trackers from?Quote

My laptop computer loads my Excel files v-e-r-y s-l-o-w-l-y. All of my Excel spreadsheets don't do this...just some but it takes FOREVER to pull some of them up. Do you have any suggestions as to what my problem might be? My computer is defragged regularly and it is VIRUS and adware protected.That depends on how complicate and how big the excel files are, do you have links to many files and number crunching formulae?
