Comment on the theme of the novel ‘Inside the Haveli’.

Answer»

The theme of the novel ‘Inside the Haveli’ is that we should not blindly follow the outdated traditions and customs. These old traditions are fatal to the life of an individual and nation. Money spent on outdated customs is unwise. There are people who borrow money simply to maintain these customs and traditions. Such a stupid habit makes them poor and they die in debt. Man has a fully developed mind. He can reason out whether a certain custom is useful or harmful to him. The sooner one gets rid of harmful customs, the better it is for him and his children.

Discuss ‘Inside the Haveli’ as a modern classic. ‘

Answer»

In the novel ‘Inside the Haveli’ the novelist has tried to redefine the values of our traditions and customs which we have inherited from our forefathers. She does not believe in ‘old is gold’. Nor does she believe in ‘past is perished’. She believes in the harmonious mixture of what is good in the ancient and the modern. The emotional relationship between the master and the servant is essential for the progress of human race and the development of industry. Equally important is the understanding between the outgoing and incoming generations. Empowerment of woman and her restoration to her honourable position is another message of the novel. Thus the novel is indeed a modern classic.

Write a paragraph of 150 words on “Punctuality”.It has been said, “Never put off for tomorrow what you can do today”. Yet there are many people who enjoy postponing things. Such people do not realize the dangers of delaying. Work does not disappear if we postpone it. The difficulty of the work does not get reduced by postponing it. The more we postpone, the more the work piles up. Finally, the load of work seems too much. We then have to work for many days at a stretch under great strain and tension. Finally we do it hurriedly and in a careless manner. It is as bad as not doing the work at all. Again, when some work is delayed, the time which would have been profitably used is wasted. Time wasted is time lost forever. Hence procrastination, that is the habit of postponing things, is rightly called the thief of time. Precious time wasted means opportunities lost, and lost forever. By the time we realize how much time we have wasted and how many opportunities we have missed by delaying word, it may be too late. And then nothing remains for us except to regret and repent. Sometimes a very heavy price has to be paid for delaying things. The person who delays insuring his factory will regret it when the factory is gutted by a sudden fire. Delay in the treatment of a disease may make it worse, and may even result in death. There are other proverbs conveying similar meaning. Thus we say: “Time and tide wait for no man” and “A stitch in time saves nine”. All these proverbs warn us against the dangers of delay in actions, and stress the importance of timely action and punctuality.Spot the errors and rewrite the sentences correctly (a) Many a man have been arrested at the meeting. (b) Most of the work have been completed.(c) Neither of the books are illustrated. (d) One of the thieves, were arrested. (e) Rani sat besides the new student.

(b) Most of the work has been completed.

(c) Neither of the books is illustrated.

(d) One of the thieves, was arrested.

(e) Rani sat beside the new student.

Read the following passage and answer the questions set on it:Sporting fraternity and sports lovers across the country applauded and felt happy when president Pranab Mukherji handed over the prestigious Arjuna Awards to several eminent sports personalities at a glittering function in the national capital recently on the occasion of National Sports Day.However, nobody perhaps would have given thought to the creator of the slick and wonderfully crafted trophies that dazzled in the hands of these well-known sporting icons. The unsung hero is Gajendra Prasad Sahu, a painter and sculptor based in Bhubaneswar. The 53-year-old artist has been making the Arjuna Award trophies for the last five years. Not only Arjuna awards, but Sahu is also the creator of the well designed Dronacharya, Dhyan Chand and Tenzing Norgay trophies presented every year by the Union Sports and Youth Affairs Ministry to an eminent coach, an important hockey player and an individual for bravery respectively. The turning point in Sahu’s life, however, came in 2009 when the Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs decided to redesign the trophy for the popular and most sought after Arjuna Award for sporting icons and invited applications from artists across the country.Sahu responded and sent the sketches of his designs which were approved by the Union Ministry. Once the preliminary sketches were okayed, he was summoned to New Delhi to submit his final design, which too, was approved and he was assigned the job of making the trophies for prestigious sports awards every year. He won the job despite the stiff competition from the individual as well as institutional competitors.Interestingly, though Sahu creates the most coveted trophies for the Indian sports icons, he never had any personal interest in sports. His works of paintings have found a place in art galleries and exhibitions in different parts of the country.Answer the following in a word, a phrase or a sentence each:(a) Mention the year that brought a turning point in Sahu’s life.(b) Why was Sahu summoned to New Delhi? (c) Sahu’s paintings are found in(i) Palaces(ii) Galleries(iii) Govt, offices.(d) Gajendra Prasad Sahu is the .....(creation/creator) of the trophies.(e) Add a prefix to the word ‘known’ to form its antonym.

Elucidate how the novel depicts the beginning of a social change.

Answer»

The haveli “Jeevan Niwas’ is home to men and women who love and honour age old traditions and customs. They pride themselves in following and maintaining them. Lack of education has never allowed them to keep out of these blind faiths. Geeta, a Bombay bred young girl, comes to the haveli as Ajay Singh’s bride. Her good upbringing, her education, love and co-operation of her in-laws encourage her to start classes for the servants’ children and the maids. She teaches them to read and write. She tells them inspiring stories. This modest beginning helps many maids to get a good job. It symbolises the beginning of a social change.

29.

Discuss the lives of the women of the havelis.

Answer»

The havelis of Udaipur had the atmosphere of the feudalism. The male members were like the lions and the women were mere sheep. They strictly observed veil and moved thus even within the haveli. The haveli ‘Jeewan Niwas’ was no exception to it. The husbands could meet their wives only at certain times. Men and women had their separate apartments. Life in the haveli was bound by traditions and customs. It was below their dignity to go for shopping. Every thing was provided to the women inside the haveli. Geeta, a Bombay-bred girl found herself like a caged bird. Even her reading habit was ridiculed and became a topic of gossip.

30.

Comment on the regional aspect of the language of the novel.

Answer»

A novel is not a mere narration of incidents and events. It is a live picture of the people’s life of a region. So naturally, the true enjoyment lies in the interaction of its characters in their own dialect or language. The novelist has given the names of the characters in the regional language for example Kanwarani sa, Manji sa, Nandu sa, Vijay Bai sa, Bhagwat Singh ji, Daulat Singh Ji, Sarju, Dhapu, etc. For ‘Bahu’Binniji has been used, for mother Bhabhi, for grandmother Bara Bhabhi, for Babu sahab, Bapu sa have been used. This gives flavour of Rajasthani language, particularly that of Udaipur.

31.

Comment on the male characters of the novel.

Answer»

The female characters in the novel play an important role. The novelist has done full justice to the creation of characters of Kanwarani sa and Daulat Singh’s wife. Besides the characters of Bhagwat Singhji and his son, all the male chracters have been poorly presented. In fact they are caricatures and not characters. Khyali, the cook is the dominating character among the servants of the haveli. He is everywhere in the bazaar, in the deep narrow lanes, in the temple, with the panwala, with the tailor, with the merchants and the jewellers. But poor Gangaram, Gokul and Dhapu’s husband are mere puppets. The novelist brings them before the readers whenever she likes. She withdraws them whenever they are not needed.

32.

Why did Geeta falter in managing the haveli, specially the kitchen, in the absence of her mother-in-law ?

Answer»

In the absence of her mother-in-law, Geeta got up earlier than usual because she had to look after the kitchen. As she reached the kitchen, Pariji had already taken out the day’s ration, vegetables, the ghee and the oil. Geeta had not the courage to instruct or disagree with the maids, specially Pari who knew better about the kitchen than she did. Though she had seen the cook spreading ghee on the servants’ rotis lavishly she did not have the courage to interfere.

33.

How does Geeta adjust herself to the life of the haveli ?

Answer»

In the haveli at Uadipur there is strict Parda system. The maids and the ladies of the haveli cannot live without a veil. The ladies and the gents have different apartments. Geeta, a Bombay-bred educated girl comes to the haveli as the bride of Ajay Singh. In the suffocating atmosphere of the haveli, she finds herself a caged bird. Her education, love and cooperation of her in-laws and her power of adjustment help her in adapting herself to the life of the haveli. In her spare time she starts classes for the maids and the servants’ children. She always remains busy in useful activities. Dhapu, her personal maidservant is a friend and guide to her.

34.

“Geeta fought with the old customs of the Haveli.” How true is this statement ?“गीता हवेली की प्राचीन रीतिरिवाजों से लड़ी।”

Answer»

It cannot be denied that a Bombay-bred girl found a suffocating atmosphere in the tradition bound haveli of Udaipur, the entire day. She was ridiculed for not knowing how to touch the feet of elders. She had to veil her face. Her husband could not meet her at will. She could not talk to her father-in-law directly. But her education, her power of adjustment and her in-laws’ love gave her the courage to overcome all the odds.
