Solve : gamepad joystick always off-center?

Answer»

I have a game elements pc RECOIL gamepad from wal-mart. I plug it in, and everything's fine. But I always seem to move forward in games without press up on the left joystick, so I went into calibration and it always seems that when i move the left joystick, instead of bouncing back to (127,127) it goes to (140,102). I have tried it on ANOTHER computer and it works just perfectly. I have windows xp pro sp2 and the other computer has Windows XP Home w/ SP2. How can I correct this?SINCE this post is now quite old I don't know if you STILL have this gamepad or if you've resolved your problem but I would try calibrating the gamepad.

Go to your Control PANEL and select Game Controllers then if you didn't install the divers it should say "4-Axis 12 button gamepad", make sure it's selected then click the properties button. Another dialog will appear with a Calibrate tab, you want to go to that tab and calibrate the gamepad there then your problem should be solved.I'm sure he will reply shortly...gamers are a dedicated lot...

Solve : Computer has been stored for some time, now fails to boot.?

Answer»

I would be grateful for some advice. Computer has been stored for some time, now fails to boot.  I have put in a KNOWN working graphics card in case of card failure - but this is definitely a boot problem. I have checked memory - ok. I have reset bios - still no boot. Power supply is working - at least the fans are. I have replaced bios battery - no good. Even bios won't boot. Screen remains blank, no POST, no beeps. Could it be a corrupt bios, or motherboard failure? Any ideas very welcome. Many thanks, Anthony. Will it boot from a floppy or CD? Quote from: 2k_dummy on November 03, 2007, 12:37:14 PM

Will it boot from a floppy or CD?

I'm thinking not, if it won't POST. Anthony, how long was it stored? Could it have got wet? Could it have received a shock or got dropped? How do you know the memory is OK? The fact that its fans are revolving does not mean the PSU is OK. Is the CPU seated properly? Do you hear any seek sounds from the HDD?

It may have got slightly damp. It has 2 sticks of memory - tested by booting with each stick - no boot. There are seek sounds from HD, and I have reseated the processor. It was stored in an attic. If the HD was faulty, surely it would boot to floppy. If it did get damp, I wonder if a heat gun carefully used might work. Many thanks for your courteous help - much appreciated. Cornwall in the UK can be somewhat damp. Anthony. Quote from: anthonyj2422 on November 03, 2007, 02:09:51 PM

and I have reseated the processor.

Did you re-apply thermal compound ? ?

And the first thing i would do is borrow a known working PSU and swap it in there...as contrex stated working fans is no indication of PSU health...Contrex, you were right to be suspicious of the memory. While fiddling, I chanced to press the reset button, which immediately set off a long beep - the first noise. Why the reset button did this is a mystery. Thinking long beep meant memory, I had another go. This time it booted on one of the sticks. Rooting around in my box produced some more PC133, known to work, but it wouldn't boot on them. Nevertheless, I persevered and all 3 slots are now ok. Perhaps the slots were damp. I have not COME across this before; I mean memory ok, slots PROBLEMATIC. It may have needed more time to dry out. Or perhaps dust? Many thanks to all, Anthony. Memory Ok, slots bad is quite common on motherboards which have been stored for a long while. Dust, mould, condensation, or a mixture... The contact areas are tiny and the method of connection depends on every one of up to 100 tiny contacts being up to spec. Glad to hear you made progress.

My system is working PROPERLY but the processor fan is not working at all.

Pls! what may cause this and what is the problem it can occur as the fan is not rolling at all?

Thanks 4 willing to put me through!!!

Stephen SagacityIs the fan plugged in to the motherboard? If you are running it like this you risk FRYING the CPU and possibly the MBoard ...
If the fan is plugged in and has FAILED remove it carefully and take it to a computer store nearby to match it up with a replacement.

Solve : What is Modding??

Answer»

What is Modding? I don't understand what's this word about. Can you give me an example please. Thanks! Modding is to change, alter or play around with computer parts (mainly cases).

People have custom built cases they have designed themselves.

Here is a link to a modIf you are referring modding in Video GAMES, basically a mod COULD be something like instead of a pistol shooting a bullet in the game, someone could mod it to shoot explosives.Modding a games console is when you install a "mod CHIP" to make it do things the maker did not intend.
Modding = Moddifying.

In hardware, it is the physical modification of a CERTAIN object, or USUALLY a part of the computer case, to make it look a different way. But "mods" could also be done for purposes other than vanity. Quote from: Jess607 on November 02, 2007, 12:18:45 PM

Solve : Added drive missing letter?

Answer»

I recieved a Seagate 160G drive and turned it into a Usb removable drive. After hooking it up, the drive shows up in the Device Manager, but does not show up in the Disk management area. And does not show up in the My computer area. I have tried this on two different machines, one running XP pro and the other running XP home, both have SP2 installed. It has been a while since I have build a machine, but I didn't think I am that rusty. What am I missing ? ThanksFirst off, is the drive even formatted? Most drives come unformatted and require the user to throw a PARTITION of some sort on it. Check that out and keep posted. My GUESS is that it is not formatted, and for the life of me I can't think of how to do it if I can't see it. Thanks

TimHmm....i wonder. Maybe if u uninstall it from the Device Manager list and plug it back in..windows will jump into plug'n'play mode and maybe reinstall it correctly? No dice. It shows up in the device manager, but not in the disk management area or in my computer. Starting to think the drive is shot. THANKSIF you right clik it in Disk Management and select Properties how is it being reported ? ?If I right CLICK it in device manager, it will give me the properties, but it will not populate (possibly because I have it a drive case connected by usb). But it does not show up at all in the disk management. The light on the drive case is active, and it does look like the drive is being queried. It could very well be a faulty USB enclosure...i'd hook up the drive internally as a slave and see if it is recognised in Disk Management and if so format it from there to prepare it for use.
Then swap it back into the enclosure and see...
If the same symptoms appear after these steps then the enclosure is dead.

p.s. You could also DLoad SeaTools from their site to create a bootable CD and use their utilities to both check the health of the drive and prep it for use.

I want to use dimm memory on a new motherboard. My PROBLEM is I dont know if I can erase the old data with a new motherboard. Can you please help?Sigh.

Erase the data from the RAM modules? You don't have to do that.

Just make sure they are compatible with the new motherboard. They are compatible 184 pin. On my last computer I tryed to install a sound card on 1 of the pci slots, and after that my computer wouldnt come back on. It only came back on once after I removed the card. An it was only for a second or so. I remember seeing a message that said somthing like, hit a key to delete ram. I dont know. It happend so fast. My first pc worked great untill then. I think it was the power supply. it was only a 450 watThat is just a misunderstood and seculded incident.

The 184-pin DDR modules do not have to be erased in any way. That happens automatically.Hmmm... I doubt the message was for deleting RAM.

The error message "hit a key to delete ram" is a single and secluded incident where one must delete their RAM manually. It has to do with the certain rare circumstances that were evident in this person's case, and have nothing to do with how RAM usually gets deleted, which is automatically. Thus, my advise was correct, and he should not worry about deleting his RAM in anything but that single secluded case. Quote from: Jess607 on November 02, 2007, 03:25:50 AM

Ah I get it. You are confused about ONE meaning of the word "isolated" having a similar meaning to"secluded". "Secluded" means "isolated" in the sense that a monk or a prisoner or a lonely person is isolated. It does not mean "isolated" in the sense of an unusual or single incident. Solve : DVD Burning?

Answer»

Well Im not having any ISSUES while burning... But I have a quick question... I have one disc drive on my computer... But if I buy another one could I burn two different movies at once...

Say like if I wanted to burn Freddy Kruger in the 1st drive... And wanted to burn Jason in the 2nd drive... Would that be possible...

With a ton of RAM and free hard drive space...yes.I'd agree I think it would be possible, although I've never done this.

One issue I could potentially see is the software that you're using to create the DVD's may have issues or will not work if you're trying to do it at the same time. If this happened you'd probably have to end up using two different programs to do it.

If you do happen to try this let us know THOUGH if it works or doesn't work.Honestly, I don't think it would be worth the effort.  But it sounds like an interesting little experiment.i'm convieced that it will work SINCE this sunday i almost did it also, but this can be achieved by two burning programs and you must have sufficient memory.. Let me say use nero and realone player with two different cd/dvd roms..

If i try this tonight i'll let everyone know..... How much RAM do you have ? ? QUOTE from: patio on October 30, 2007, 06:18:52 AM

LOL... so could you tell me what i would needI don't know. I've never tried TWO burning at the same time, but what I know is the fact, that your computer itself needs that minimum 512MB to run correctly (depending on your OS version).

Solve : Sony Vaio Temperature Question.?

Answer»

Hi all

I have a Sony Vaio PCG-GRZ630 and it feels like it's running too hot.

I have cleaned all the gunk, dust and biscuits from the inside and I have fitted a new CPU fan but I still think it's too hot.

I'm monitoring my CPU temp with Notebook Hardware Control 2.0

While the notebook is sitting idle and has been on for a while the CPU temp sits at around 58C. When I start working the CPU at 100% the temp gets up to 79C pretty quick. As SOON as I reduce the CPU usage the temp drops back down to about 59C.

So I have a couple of questions:

1.  Anyone know what the OPERATING temperature for this notebook should be?

2. Is there anyway of increasing the fan speed? (I looked at the Sony site and their suggestion is to adjust the power settings in the control panel but I don't have the TAB they talk about so I can't do it that WAY)

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Right if he used the new hard drive, did he leave the old one in there?  I think that's STUPID if he did considering he said you "needed" a new one... if he didn't, did he copy everything over to the new one?    I"m thinkin maybe he simply screwed up and didn't copy anything over or accidently deleted it and is saying "they're hidden" to simply get out of saying "I MESSED up" because I've gone from drive to drive to drive and installed windows at least 40 some times in the past few YEARS and I KNOW THINGS DO NOT JUST GO "HIDING"....  Once again-- my 2 cents.      but yeah ask him where they are hidden...and if you wouldn't mind... WHY they are hidden.. I'm kinda curious. haha.

what im THINKING of doing is ripping out the socket 7 and puting in the 370 molding so the cpu will fit will this work or it wont fit beacuse they are exactly the same size

so is it possible for me to install the 370 socket in?Not only have a never heard of such a thing, or think that it would be a bad idea, I can almost guarantee that it wouldn't work because of the bios.   It wouldn't know how to USE the 370 processor and just because it FITS wouldn't be sufficient..  All those pins make a connection for a reason they all go somewhere.  So from my knowledge of logics I am going to say no it won't work.. but that's just my opinion.that brings me to another question if i rip off the socket from the motherboard will it destroy it or is there away i can mount it back on Quote from: Crono on NOVEMBER 01, 2007, 11:18:24 PM

Solve : Bios Memory count off?

The problem I have had for a few weeks now is that the memory COUNT
in the BIOS screen shows that I only have 959 MB of RAM memory, when
about 3 weeks ago I had over 1 GB of RAM in the memory count!?!
Performance wise,I have had some apps not responding, but otherwise the
computer has been FAIRLY error free.
I was THINKING that either the BIOS is corrupt,or that I might need to get
a good diagnostic utility to point where the fault lies?
Any HELPFUL suggestions appreciated!!Have you got some of the memory set up as shared memory for your display?

A good memory test utility is called Memtest86

http://www.memtest86.com/

I doubt if the BIOS is corrupt. I suspect that either you have forgotten that you are sharing video memory or one of your RAM modules is going flaky.

Doing a clean install doesn't mean you cleaned your harddrive first..    If you do a clean install of windows you can still install on a hard  drive that already has windows on it.. But anyways, you're saying there's only one option.. If there' not two I don't think it's on there twice, but windows installed the bootloader.  If you right click my computer, then click on advanced then click on the settings button under startup and recovery, you'l GET a windows that will allow you to choose the default operating system from that list, you can choose how long to display that list, and another option you don't need right now.. What you can do is make sure it's set to teh right operating system (there should only be that one there) then change the amount of seconds from whatever it's at (usually 30's the default, however with a Dell XP cd it may be differetnt I don't know, to a lower number like 5 or 1 if you want.. but if I were you I'd set it to like 2 or 3 till I make sure that fixes it because if oyu set it to one and the wrong operating system was chosen if ther'es more than one in that list then you may have issues!  So set it at 2 or something at first, restart and see if that fixed it.... It won't get rid of that screen but it should make it so only lasts for 2 seconds (or whever you set that option to)  hope that helps ya. :-)

Solve : are these components compatible??

Answer»

ok, im building a new computer after a stupid video card RUINED my motherboard...

I want to use these parts...

1. MSI P4M890M-L Micro ATX Intel Motherboard
Item #:N82E16813130061R
2. Intel Core 2 Duo E4500 2.2GHz LGA 775 Processor
Item #:N82E16819115031
3. Kingston 1GB 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 667 (PC2 5300) Desktop Memory
Item #:N82E16820134045
the item numbers are for newegg.com...

I've heard that MSI motherboards are good and I've never had problems, but I've never used core 2 duo with MSI so what can I expect?

Also, are these components compatible?Everything is alright aside from the RAM. The motherboard SUPPORTS RAM only up to 533Mhz. But you could probably use the 667Mhz modules by overclocking.

And on a side NOTE, I think that the E4500 is overkill in any CASE. You don't need an 11x multiplier for a CPU that can't get past 4.0Ghz.

Solve : So I built a new computer that won't work for me...?

Answer»

Title basically gives the description. I built my first computer back in JULY and have had some problems with it for a while. Nothing more than getting a blue screen now and then (say, once or twice a day) which I just blamed on Vista Ultimate 64bit due to lack of driver support. How ever this week something very odd has happened.

I got a big old BOOT DISK ERROR, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER message and after tweeking with my computer I came to the conclusion that my hard drive went belly up on me and I couldn't get the dang thing to work at all. So I tried the freezer trick to recover some data I didn't want to loose. Strangly, my drive seemed to work for a while. To play it safe I decided to reformat and do a clean install to see if it would do the trick. This seemed to work untill the installation process got to the point where it had to restart to go further, after the restart all I could get was a blinking curser on a blank screen.

At this point I started thinking it might be my DVD/RW drive rather than my hard drive. Since on all reformat/reinstalls I've tried I can only get that far, yet another strange thing has occoured. When ever I try to start from my hard drive rather than my DVD drive, I get a list to choose which operating system I want to start on, each one listed is Windows Vista, and each one is a copy from when I tried to reformat/reinstall Vista. I can't select any one of them or else I get a blue screen.

Another suggestion I heard is that it might be my ram. I have 4gigs of DDR26400, I already replaced a couple of them before. As for how bad ram would affect my machine is beyond me, ESPECIALLY if it would have taken this long for it to finaly degrade my computer into a $1700 paper weight.

Being that its my first computer I'm trying to do this mostly on my own without any paid help, and so far I'm stumped on what actually might be the problem. Basically, any one have some insight on what might be wrong?Bad ram can be bad from the start, or it can get worse over time as it heats and cools. It could be your problem.

Problems caused by "bad" RAM, (and that can mean defective, or poor quality, or incompatible with your motherboard, not seated properly,  or even timings wrongly set up in the BIOS) can range from freezes and error messages during install to freezes and BSODs during operation and corruption of data and filesystems on disk.

MemTest

Follow the instructions on the site to create a bootable floppy/CD and run it for a few hours.
Any errors mean the RAM is bad.
You may have to run one stick at a time to find the bad one/ones.

May i also suggest DLoading and running the diagnostics on that HDD from the manuf. website (Free). This will tell you for sure if that drive has gone South.I tried your suggestions and figured out that it was a combination of both bad ram and hard drive. My older IDE drive was somehow interfering with my sata drive. Long story short, my sata drive was fine and my IDE was the trouble maker despite being able to load up XP just fine and work like a charm (goodbye 18 gigs of music and videos, my iPod will be barren without you).

The memtest showed up 4 errors the first time I tried it with all of my memory sticks in (4 sticks, 1gig of ram each). After 3 days of extensive testing of each stick, then each stick in each one of the 4 ram slots for 3 hours each, it came up with no errors. I'm HOPING it was somehow an ISOLATED insident caused by my IDE drive, but knowing techology its just another problem that will eventually come to bite me in the *censored*.

Thank you both very much for the help! I can finally enjoy TEAM Fortress 2.

Solve : noisy cpu?

Answer»

I'm only been using my computer for only 4 month..and now the cpu START buzzing inside.. I LIKE to make it quite. Is there something I can do to make it quiet..

P/s ; it buzzing like when an old computer start working..or like when you turn on your computer..but it does not stop..Im so worried...please help me..Based off your description of the PROBLEM and what I know about computers I'd assume that one of your fans inside your computer (CPU) is failing or has already failed. This could potentially be bad if it is a fan as a bad fan can cause your computer to overheat, so it is something you'll want to fix.

If the computer is still in warranty call the computer manufacturer for repair. Otherwise I'd suggest you open the computer and try to determine what fan has failed in the computer and get a replacement fan and/or heatsink.

This could be a Case fan, CPU heatsink fan, Power Supply fan, or any other fan in the computer.

If you're not comfortable opening the computer or working inside the computer I'd suggest having someone who is do this for you and/or taking it to a repair shop.maybe its too dusty inside, try to CHECK and clean it.

im also AFFECTED this problem... i check the fan of my processor and clean the heatsink bec. too much dust inside..

I have had a Compac notebook for about 4 years and believe the battery is worn-out.  Will this effect the processing SPEED?  Nope your notebook will CONTINUE to work fine running off just the power CORD. Solve : HP 7960 Printer help - extremely slow + wont recognise re-filled cartridge?

Answer»

A problem I have with my HP 7960 is that it prints extremely slowly.
It prints in a burst of a few seconds and then sits idle for more than a minute.
It does this until the document is finished.
Is this maybe due to the printer thinking that the black cartridge is out and struggling to print with just the colour and photo cartridges?

also

Is there any way to force my HP 7960 to re-recognise a re-filled cartridge?
It simply REFUSES to use the black cartridge as it STILL thinks it's empty.
Oddly though, the first time I re-filled it, it didn't cause a problem.
Is this HP ENSURING that I buy new, expensive cartridgesPlease, stay in one thread.

What on Earth does a Linux distro have to do with replacing a printer cartridge ? ? ?

 You may try master reset:
http://www.trenholm.org/hmmerk/HP7960.html
Quote
The master reset process was surprisingly complex: 1. Open top cover and remove all ink cartridges. 2. Unplug power. 3. Remove back door and any paper in the machine. 4. This was the hard part: through the front, locate a small white plastic block deep inside at the left of the printer, and hold it in. Simultaneously, through the back, rotate the paper pick-up rollers about two turns (and they are quite stiff). 5. Replace back door. 6. Load letter-size paper in the printer. 7. Plug in the power. 8. Replace the ink cartridges and close the top cover. If all has gone well, the printer will commence to print a calibration page. We had to do this three times, I believe, in order to diagnose and correct the problem.
(toward the bottom of the above page)Patio - spot-on;
Tommy - you have completely lost me there old fella!!

Broni - I hope it doesn't come to that - sounds pretty compliated. I may have to try it though.  However, first I'm gonna surcome to commercial pressure and buy a new cartridge (http://www.fixyourownprinter.com/forums/printer/51616#2) as the cartridge ID system may be the problem and the FACT that the printer is trying to make its best attempt at black out of the colour cartridge is the most likley reason it's taking so long to print.Jack on some printers unfortunately this is by design...the microchip is on the cartridge itself and tells the printer the cartridge is done.
They don't want you to refill your cartridges yourself...
They don't want you to buy generic cartridges...

It's all about the money unfortunately.
I think it's inexcusable myself.Patio,

Yep - we can give ourselves a COLLECTIVE pat on the back - that was the problem.
I used the fix I got from Stephen at the above link and it worked a treat - it also cured the speed problem.

Thanks to all for contributions.

This bearing will shortly go silent...........keep calling Sir, we'll find you.........

Solve : Help! Missing sound card?!?

Answer»

I am going crazy!!!  Comcast came and swtiched my modem.  They installed thier software and I unistalled it from my control panel.

Since then, I have NO sound!  I can't update the driver, as there is no hardware detected!!!  I used Everest, but it didn't help.  I have been to Comcast, HP, ATI, Microsoft Update and AMD sites, no one seems to understand that it is the sound card ITSELF that is missing!

It's supposed to be an integraded sound card, but I'm not quite sure what that means!

AGGHHH! Please help!
  Quote

It's supposed to be an integraded sound card, but I'm not quite sure what that means!
Integrated sound card is a chip built into your motherboard.
So, when you go to Device Manager, there is nothing listed under "Sound, video, and game controllers"?
Do you have any entry under "Other devices", possibly with yellow exclamation mark?try unplugging the card and replug the card, check device manager, or............................ < hang up the phone >  The codecs are listed in the device manager, but when i go to properties, it shows no device as listed.

i've read at different sites to unplug-replug the sound card, but i literally have no idea what i'm doing inside that case!

it's driving me nuts though, no sound!Dang can't help ya you should really bring it to a expert. Like the GEEK SQUAD! lolztommy, you keep posting messages which are like "sorry I don't know the answer", I've counted about three or four. There are more respectable ways of getting your post count up!

mickjen, if you have an integrated sound controller, you don't have a sound card to unplug and plug in again. It's a chip FIXED on the motherboard. Did you get a CD of drivers with the PC?

Have you tried the "Find New Hardware" wizard?

You have not said what OS you are RUNNING.

XP Home Edition.

No discs, no recovery anything, really.  I traded this computer, and the guy was a gamer.  Stripped off everything HP had originally installed.

Doesn't recognize any new hardware, and even when I downloaded the Realtek driver, it doesn't do anything.  For the sound card, it can't have a driver updated, becuz it thinks there is NO sound card.

I'm at my wits end!  It just happened this week, and I don't know why Comcast's internet app would change anything.  I had the software installed before, and removed it, with no problems.

It wouldn't have anything to do with the new modem?! What kind of modem is it? A 56K dialup? A DSL? A cable modem? How does it connect? Is it inside the case or is it external?

You say it's an HP. If you can post the model number maybe there are drivers that can be downloaded. It may be that this is a coincidence, that your sound chip just happened to fail around the time that the new modem was installed.

On the other hand, HP have OEM motherboards and it may be that the plain vanilla Realtek driver won't cut it. There are plenty of forum threads around on the web from people with suddenly missing sound hardware on HPs. From some of the comments it happens to plenty of people. The t860 is one model I have seen mentioned. Is it a laptop or a desktop? Like I said, model number please!

If you run Belarc Advisor it should give some hardware INFORMATION.

The drivers will be on your MBoard driver CD, just try re-installing them.No CDS, none! Can I get a motherboard cd anywhere?

HP sez I can order my recovery discs.  Which I would like to, get everything back to factory settings, and choose to unistall the things I want....

Seriously, is this a driver issue, or do I need to get a new sound card?Well, you should get your recovery disks, and get the system back to factory specs. Then you can see if the sound card is working. A PCI sound card will cost from around $10-$15 upwards, so it's not a big deal anyway. You can get a fairly decent one for around $40 - $60.

Arg!!!

I unistalled and reinstalled 3 different drivers, as instructed by HP.

Same *censored* error message....

Do I really have to get the discs?  or new card?

I can't reseat the motherboard?

Could it be dust? Anything I can do without having to spend money?

Solve : USB to Serial Adaptor?

Answer»

I recently purchased a USB to serial adapter to connect my OLD Psion Series 3a to my NEW laptop RUNNING Vista Home Premium.
The adapter does not seem to be working.
Does ANYONE know what the properties and advanced properties of this device should be to mimic a standard com port?
There seem to be several adapters in the market place, MINE is unbranded from Maplins.  I have read about those from Belkin and Clove.
Are they all created equal?!What OS are you using and what do the properties of the serial port report in Device Manager ? ?

Solve : problems partitioning hard drive?

Answer»

I am trying to partition a drive in a sony vaio laptop (win 2000 pro. Pentium 3) with its system recovery discs.  It gives me this message:

The hard drive is not partitioned.  This utility creates DOS partitions and restarts your computer.  If you see this message again, it may be caused by non-DOS partitions on the drive.  You must delete the non-DOS partitions to proceed.  Do you wish to continue?

so I say yes and then it says error that no fixed disks are present.  So I go through the process again.  I assume I have to ERASE those partitions, but I'm not sure how.  Any thoughts? It being a laptop is probably SPOTTING a hidden partition containing the recovery FILES for the laptop...have you visited the manuf. site or is it OK if you wipe the entire drive at this point ? ?

Solve : Computer boots, but nothing on screen?

Yesterday my friend CALLED me over to fix her computer, an HP.

Windows XP
2.6 ghz P4

When turned on, the hard drive spun and the motherboard made the regular POST beep, but there was nothing on the monitor. I switched out the video card for one of my old ones, and it worked PERFECTLY. The next day, she tells me the same problem came up so I TOOK home the video card and her monitor and tested them on my machine, and they worked fine.

I'm truly stumped on this one, anyone have any ideas?

Solve : computer crashing after format?

Answer»

hey guys,
i recently installed windows xp service pack 1 on a new system i built.  I have a 250GB HDD but as we all know, old versions of XP can only read 131gb.  so i updated to sp2 and now it shows my hdd is 250GB, but only 131gb are usable because the rest isnt formatted.  i ran disk management and selected to format all the unallocated space to a new D: drive.  however as soon as the formatting finished, the computer crashed.  i couldnt get it to boot again until i shut off the machine and turned it back on.  now it shows the D: drive in My Computer, but it still isnt formatted.  i tried formatting it again as NTFS by using windows, partition magic, and even a clean install using slipstreamed xp sp2 cd, but again it crashed upon completion.  i originally thought that maybe my copy of windows was bad but i tried 3 DIFFERENT CDS and versions and it still doesnt work.  does anyone know what i can do to get the rest of my hard drive space usable?  im assuming its either the MOBO or the harddrive thats the problem
thanks alot for the help

Solve : USB FLASH DRIVES FILE TRANSFER?

Answer»

HELLO,

Just a couple of questions. If I a transfer a folder or a single from an USB Flash to another in the same PC (i.e. from F to E,), is there anyway any registers are kept in my computer?

If I DELETE a file from my USB flash, where does the file go when it is deleted?

I appreciate your answers. By the way, this would be while working on Win XP.

Regards,
Quote

is there anyway any registers are kept in my computer?
No.

Quote
If I delete a file from my USB flash, where does the file go when it is deleted?
I'll try to make it simple.
Flash memory is built out of cells. Each cell may have charge of "0" (written), or "1" (empty).
Your flash card may look LIKE this:
11110001111
where "000" is your file.
When you delete a file, you simply change three cells charge from "000" to "111".
Now, your flash card look like this:
11111111111

As I said, this is just simply speaking. If you have no Recycle Bin on your flash drive, then I believe any FILES deleted are permanently deleted.  AFAIK, flash drives can have their own Recycle Bin, same as HARD drives.  My PNY flash drive has no Recycle Bin when I open it on my Win XP computer.  And, I don't know how to add a Recycle Bin to it.  However, I'm under the impression Recycle Bin can be added to flash drives.Good EXPLAINING Broni

Solve : Why no yellow????

Answer»

My PC is 5 yrs old, ok 6, running XP. I had an old HP 720C printer that stopped printing yellow. Changed the cartridge (and thereby the printhead) but still no yellow. Must have tried 3 or 4 different carts. Changed the parallel lead, still no yellow. emailed HP support but the time would have been better spent trying to teach the dog to play chess. Bought another HP printer off ebay, this time a 890C (I've got a free supply of the cartridges you SEE) BUT IT STILL WON'T PRINT YELLOW. Arrggh. Please if anybody knows anything about this LET me know, it's keeping me awake nights.Sounds like possibly the port DATA port is defective for the yellow input.  Do you have another COMPUTER that you could test the printer on?

Alan <><  I have a laptop but it has no parallel port. If that's the answer then I'll havt to get me a hybrid cable. Might I have dislodged something in the PC? I OPEN it up a couple of times a year and give it a good blow out with compressed air.Perhaps you could simply try a new cable.  They should be pretty cheap.

But, without it windows also seems fine for me, if your MONITOR display bad, it could be the resolution or you accidentally uninstall your INTEGRATED graphic, or messing somewhere in the computer.try checking the device manager

Was it clean install, or over the top?

You can't  do this until you'll get into Windows.I did both clean install and over the top.  NEITHER worked.  When I clean install I want to know that I have everything erased and I didn't know how to tell if I did.  At this point, I want to completely erase and start over.

I can get into Windows of I CLICK F1, so I want to know how to get to the start box shere programs are listed that begin at startup. Quote

When you go with clean install, using Windows XP CD, you'll want to remove all partitions, when asked, create a new partition, when asked, and format, when asked. All those questions are being asked during Windows installation.

Quote
I want to know how to get to the start box shere programs are listed that begin at startup.
You can:
1. Go Start>Run, type in: msconfig. Hit Enter. Look at "Startup" tab.
Better yet,
2. Download "Autoruns" (http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/Utilities/AutoRuns.mspx), click on "Logon" tab.

Thank you for speaking so clearly.
When I reinstall from my original OS CD it doesn't take me through all those steps.  I follow from the manual and nothing is the same as what the manual says.  It's like I have a some foregh OS when I go to DOS.  I had service pack but I deleted it.  Did that mess things up?

How do you know if you need a new hard drive?First of all, I don't know what manual you are referring to.
Secondly, do you have Windows XP CD, or Recovery CD.
If it's Windows XP CD, follow steps from this manual:
http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/windowsxp_sg_clean.asp
At step 5, you'll want to:

The screen will now list all EXISTING partitions and un-partitioned space for each hard disk. Use the cursor/arrow keys to select existing partition(s) (if you see more, then one). Press D to delete an existing partition. If you press D to delete an existing partition, you must then press L to confirm that you want to delete that partition. Repeat this PROCESS for each of the existing partitions in order to create your new partition. When all partitions are deleted, you can then select the remaining un-partitioned space and then press C to create new partitions.

Solve : Flashing black lines?

Answer»

Sup Forum gurus. So here is the issue. Every now and then my video will lag out and black lines will flash across my monitor every few seconds. Im not quite sure what is going on but i figured id drop in and see what you guys think.  Here are my specs:

WINDOWS XP Pro SP2
Intel Pentium D 2.8ghz dual core
2gb DDR2 ram
ATI Radeon X1650 256mb of GDDR3 ram
I use NOD32, Adaware 2007 and Zonealarm (Zonealarm more than the other 2)

Any other specs you need just let me know..glad to post em.

Bye for now.Huh. Strange issue. The first thing that came to my mind is potential monitor issue, but if it's lagging out at the same time I'd lean more towards graphics card related issue.

Have you tried getting the latest drivers for your card?

http://ati.amd.com/support/driver.html

Also in Device Manager do you have any conflicts or errors showing (yellow exclamation marks / red x's)?

Also just to be on the save side check your CONNECTIONS, make sure the connection going from your monitor to your video card is secure. What kind of video are we talking about here?my video card video silly lol. Sorry i didnt make it clearer. i just got the latest video card drivers for my model. Havent installed em yet..just got home from watchin Saw 4. Ill get to it in the AM and keep you posted on anything. For now my bed calls. Gnight Quote

Every now and then my video will lag out
I asked what kind of video are you watching, which causes lagging?

BTW...How was "Saw IV"? I'm gonna see it today.Saw IV was freakin awesome. Im ready for Saw V now lol. The end was just as twisted as the beginning.  I installed new drivers for my card and the black lines thus far arent showing up. And to answer ur question the video lag i got was in-game and during REGULAR computer use (surfing the net, chatting etc.) Ill keep ya posted if the lines return. Quote
Saw IV was freakin awesome
I didn't like it. So much of going back, and forth, that at some point, I lost track.
My 16 years OLD son didn't like it, either.
We both AGREED, that 1st was the best one, then 2nd was pretty good, and 3rd, and 4th - no.

BTW - I'm glad your video problem seems to be fixed for now Eh, everyones a critic lol. Im just wondering how and if Saw 5 is a possibility with the ending we had with 4. Anyhow..its day 2 1/2 since drivers were updated and no lines..so unless something totally unexpected happens, my problem is fixed...so this thread can be closed i imagine.  thanx again

Solve : Dell optiplex won't start after shut down?

Answer»

Hello,

My dell OPTIPLEX won't start after i shut it down.  I have to unplug the computer and plug it back and i must click on the start button within 1 or 2 seconds to start the computer again.  If I wait any longer after I plug the computer back into the JACK, the computer remains shut down.  I have also noticed my computer becoming slow (any programs I run are slow as well as the internet is becoming slow).  Is my computer on its last legs?  I have had it for about 4 years.  I have windows xp if it helps. My name is JOHN, and I work as a support analyst at Dell headquarters.

You're actually describing two different problems: the slower performance, and the power issue. The slower performance can easily be resolved by a reformat/reinstallation. If it's been 4 years, it could probably use a software rebuild.

The second problem is a LITTLE more complex, and could be virtually anything. Have you added any new hardware recently? To me, it sounds like either your power supply has gotten weak, or that some other COMPONENT is drawing too much power. I would suggest running a full diagnostic from the Drivers and Utilities CD that came with the system. If you boot to that CD, it should give you the option. If anything fails the diagnostic, that's where I'd start.

The system is probably fixable. It really depends upon how much time/money you're willing to invest.

Solve : Unknown sound...where's it coming from??

Answer»

I have a chime that goes off on my computer at about 6:53 every morning and I have no idea why.  Is there some way to find out what's going on?  I actually like the sound, it's quite similar to a grandfather clock, I know how to change the sounds for different alerts, I just can't figure out how to find what's causing it to chime at that specific time.May be some kind of computer wake up (setup) from BIOS. Other than that check for viruses, etc.Maybe something in Task Scheduler.

Click START, click All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click Scheduled Tasks.
Dig around to see, if anything is scheduled at 6:53 AM...Or the more tedious but sure method...open up the Sounds and Multimedia in Control Panel...in the event window every event that has a sound assigned by a program will have a speaker icon next to it...highlight them one by one and clik the > arrow to play the sounds til you find the culprit. Thanks for your help, all.  I tried all SUGGESTIONS and so far haven't found anything.  My husband suggested I do a search for .wma files which I'm doing now.  I've got about 20 minutes here before the chime goes off so we'll see if anything happens then.  If you did try what i suggested and didn't find the sound then it is from the motherboard and not in Windows...what type of machine is this ? ?
It may be a warning that the CMOS battery is dying which is on the motherboard.ewww!  That doesn't sound too good.  I've got a Compaq Presario Pentium 4, I've had it for probably about 2 years.  I noticed this morning the chime went off at 6:51 instead of 6:53, don't know if that makes any difference or not. It's actually not that big of a deal...
COULD you post the model or serial# and we can check for an owners manual ? ?Sorry for the delay in a reply, I've been trying to get a wireless network set up here so I've been offline most of the time the last week.  As for my computer it's a Compaq 519j if that helps at all.  Also, the chime now goes off about every half hour to 45 minutes.  Geez!  This is just too weird.DLoad install and run Everest Home Free and run a report and save it to a text file.
Then cut and paste the system info and post it here so we know which MBoard we are talking about...I also wonder, if that sound would go off in Safe Mode???If it's from the MBoard i would guess yes.
This one's a bit of a puzzle. Quote

If it's from the MBoard i would guess yes
Agreed 100%.
I was just wondering, if there is maybe some background program doing this. I just wanted to eliminate another possibility..If she followed suggestions in reply#3 this would eliminate it as a Windows sound or from another program.
She stated she followed that step so i'm assuming it is a system sound from the MBoard...Is this what you were looking for?  I didn't copy and paste the whole report because it's pretty big.  If any of you would like to see the entire report I could email it.  I think I just did the hardware report.

Solve : New processor installation problems.?

Answer»

Im taking out an older processor out of my friends computer, while taking it out i accidently busted off one of the sides of the stand that holds the cpus heat sink in.  so i DECIDED to continue I put in the 3 ghz pent 4 in replace of the older 1.9 ghz p4 it is socket 478.  After putting it in i couldnt get the heatsink to fit securely so I put it on just so it was siiting there by itself with nothing holding it down tightly.  I turned on the comp I heard no beeps but the comp was running however the screen DIDNT do anything, the mouse didnt turn on or anything.  So discouaged i put in the old processor and turned it on only to have it have 1 long beep followed by 2 short beeps then it sat there running and nothing happened, I really dont know what i COULD have done to it i was curious that if this DELL wouldnt let it boot up simply because the heatsink wasnt on securely enough or not? i dont know im LOST please help.  Depending on what part you busted it may be replaceable...take the broken part to a computer repair shop. They probably have a bunch of them lying around.
The machine will never operate properly like this and you risk permanent damage to that CPU by continuing.

Solve : HDD merge?

i have a main 250gb IDE HDD and a slave 80gb IDE HDD
is ther anyway i can merge these HDD's so they act as ONE?
any help appreciated
booheres one solution me good friend.

http://www.castlecops.com/t149607-How_to_merge_2_Drives_into_One.html

Hope it helped cause I just wasted 3 min of my life. for me there are 2 easy way

1st : using software like partition magic / paragon
2nd: travel to the hdd manufacturer & download the hdd utilities, it can make it as one back again.

NOte: backup ANYTHING coz i will not reponsible for any loss data...LOLPay Attention:

These are 2 physical drives and not partitions.
This cannot be done without using a RAID setup.

Read before hitting the POST button.patio, thats just what i was thinking......
so which solution can i use?how would i go about setting up a RAID set up and how complicated is it and does it envolve reformating both drives? The best advise in your situation is leave it as is. Because of the difference in drive capacity, RAID is out. If you are not familiar with RAID, I SUGGEST you do some SERIOUS research before you wind up screwing yourself.2K is absolutely correct...it can take a good deal of effort to setup a RAID array properly.
The HDD's have to be equal in capacity for one...you would also need a controller card ...additional hardware...
In short there's not much advantage to a home based system which is why i offered no details.

This however will get you started if you want to pursue it...thanx very much for UR help guys
preciate it

Solve : Monitor Problems.?

Answer»

just bought a new computer and a new monitor.
Using Geforce 8880 GTS graphics card, LG L226WTQ-BF monitor. Windows Vista home premium.
New DVI cable and power cable.

The monitor works fine for 30min or so, drivers everything are installed properly. After that, the colors become messed up. Half the task bar will be grey lines, desktop background image will seem to have satuation 100%. Restarting computer wont help.
Normally when I start up my computer, its a black background with white wordings on the boot screen. But now, its greyish-with lines of light blue with white wordings with cyan shadows. ( something like that, its hard to describe ).

I connected my old CRT monitor and it worked fine. So i thought it was the monitor PROBLEM, i brought it back to the shop. Surprisingly, it worked fine there. He told me it might be cable problem, so i bought a new 1 and went home.
At home, i connected it back and I thought it was working normally again. Few hours later, the problem came back, exactly the same situation.
I even tried unplugging the DVI cable and switch on the monitor.
Normally, its a Black background with a Red LG logo. Now its a Greyish-with light blue patches/lines with Red LG logo...

After another 5min, ( several cable checks again ) , i started my computer again, i thought the problem was still there as the boot screen and everything was still messed up in colour, but after it went pass the user login page, the colours went fine again.
Several hours later, the problem came back.

Can anyone help me please?  Is the vid card fan working properly ? ?
The heat from running awhile causes EXPANSION inside the case to components...try powering down removing all power sources and re-seat the video card.the video fan is working properly  I assume, your monitor has two ports: VGA, and DVI?
What happens, if you use VGA cable?well the problem will be slightly different. Instead of lines of colours, i get lesser of those using VGA but there are now flickering white dots on the screen ( like poor TV reception ) ... Quote

So i thought it was the monitor problem, i brought it back to the shop
It must be something wrong with your video card, or maybe even motherboard itself.
Since it's a new toy, I'd run back to the STORE, and give them everything back.

Solve : Problem with maintaining power to monitor?

Answer»

On one of the COMPUTERS I have got when you TURN it on you hear the monitor click to turn on when the computer is switched on like it always has and then recently it has clicked again before anything comes on screen and turns the power back off to the monitor.  I thought it may be that the monitor has died, but it APPEARS that it isn't that.  I tried plugging in a different monitor which I know works but the same thing happens, so it must be SOMETHING inside the box of the computer and I have no idea what part of the computer other than the monitor would MAKE the monitor not operate.  What part of the computer would cause something like this to happen?

The beeps, fan starting up etc with the case of the computer all happen as before, but just the monitor gets no power for more than 1 second before dropping out.

Thanks for any help you can offer.Welcome aboard

Try another monitor cable. Quote from: hawthorn on October 26, 2007, 05:32:27 PM

Solve : Sound Card Not Recognised?

Answer»

Hi everyone

My HD died and I put a NEW one in.
But I can't seem to get my EXTERNAL SOUND card to work now.

I have used the installation disk but it doesn't seem to help. My card (Terratec DMX 6 Fire 24/96) doesn't show up in lists and there is an exclamation mark next to the Audio Controller in device manager.

I have DOWNLOADED the drivers but it doesn't seem to make any difference.

Does any one have any idea what I am doing wrong?

Many thanks in advance of any REPLIES posted.
kop442000Do your OS now is the same with the old one before?

If no, try this: try checking your driver compatibility with the card then try downloading the RIGHT one.

If yes, try this: try disabling other built-in sound card(if any), also try updating your   USB driver(if your external Sound Card connects at USB).

If nothing in these work, tell me ASAP.
Do you have the speakers connected properly to the sound card and not the onboard audio ? ?
Have you tried the speakers on another machine ? ?
In Device Manager right clik the audio device and select uninstall...re-boot and re-install the drivers.

Solve : Segate HD Issues?

Answer»

I have a Segate 160G that after I installed it several months back and attempted to install software on it, i kept GETTING error messages on it.  I ran their OnTract or OnStar Utility I was told VIA their website that I could return the hard drive at MY expense for a NEW one.  Now long ago and far away there was a piece of software where you could 'fix' the sector damage (now I am dating myself here).   Anyone out there have anyting like that???You can't fix sector damage. A damaged sector indicates a problem on one of the platters inside the drive. A modern hard drive CONTAINS spare sectors that it can activate if it detects a problem with a sector. This happens automatically so if you're seeing bad sectors this means no spares are available.
I don't know the utility you've used but I do know that Seagate's official hard drive diagnostics software is called SeaTools. You should test your drive with it to get an accurate diagnostic.I would back up any DATA i needed off of that drive and take advantage of Seagates offer...they are no longer giving 5 year HDD warranties to my knowledge...

Solve : HP all in one printer, 1310 series?

Okay I am trying to scan pictures from my friends comic, because we are making a website for their comic. However my scanner is not working. All the other sections of my printer WORK fine: my printer is great and my copier is great, it is just my scanner that won't work. When I press the scann BUTTON the "Power/resume" button BLINKS a few TIMES, like something is going to happen, but then it stops and nothing happens.

Is there something I should be doing to get it to work?
Should I have some photo program like Kodak up for it to work?

(Thank you Potio for the correction!)
I hope you like your new name, Potio.

Stephen, I suspect it will avoid a lot of pain for everybody if you reinstall Windows...

What all have you tried Stephen? Just so we don't suggest anything you've already tried that hasn't worked. Could it be a memory problem? Or PSU?I have checked the memory, it is well with it, and I have blown out the dust in the system, the situation refused to change.  I recently had a friend with the same problem. I think there is an error in HD which doesn't show or shows so quickly and restarts that you don't have the time to read the error. Try another hard drive in the current computer and see if that one works if yes then try reinstalling OS as mentioned above. Although, even on my friend's pc the system is 5 years old and refused to respond to any computer commands and didn't even have the option to boot from cd. Solve : Monitor on constant standby, no beeps.?

Answer»

This problem has only occured recently, posted it in this SECTION because I THOUGHT it was most suitable, feel FREE to move if its in the wrong one.

About a week ago when I tried to boot up, the power came on, fans started spinning, but the monitor stayed on standby, and there were no BIOS beep sounds. I restarted a couple of times, and it eventually fixed itself.

This has been continuing over the last week or so, with the amount of restarts required gradually getting more and more until today, when it just died completely. Same problem, but no matter what I do, the monitor STAYS in standby and the power comes on, but nothing more.

Any guidance as to what could be causing my problem would be greatly appreciated, thank you very much .Check your video card.  Swap it out with a known good one if you can.  Sounds to me like it was dying and then died.  Is there any power to your monitor at all?  Can you try the monitor with ANOTHER computer?
