Solve : won't format?

Answer»

I have a biostar motherboard with a 2.8 P4 and 2 gig ddr ram, maxtor 320GB SATA harddrive, it keeps freezing, especially when using alot of ram, after trying all software FIXES and removing all hardware possible (DIGITAL video card, sound card, TV in card) and it still freezing i decided to reformat but it freezes even then, and i have reset my bios, any incite would be appreciatedHave you tired to take out the HD and slave it from ANOTHER PC to reformat it?FORMATTING will erase all your data...
As long as you're not concerned about this we can proceed.
First thing i would do is DLoad Seatools diagnostics from their site to create a bootable CD/floppy and run them on that HDD to see if it has failed or not.
When did the freezing issues start ? ?

There can be numerous reasons for freezing so provide as much detail as you can.

Solve : Printers: Some advice from anyone with a printer?

Answer»

Hi guys, I've got a lexmark X1185 multifunction centre, and have been terribly disappointed with it for a long time. It has chewed up ink so quickly, cartridges are so expensive, and quality is poor as anything. So I am looking to get a new one, and I am wondering a few things. What is a good printer (not MFC) that
1. Doesn't chew up ink too fast - maybe has separate refillable cartridges?
2. Good quality
3. What's better, inkjet or bubblejet?
4. Good LIFE and cheap cartridges?

Also, anyone had experience with the CANON PIXMA iP5300 Bubble Jet?
Thanks

-StephenIf you are looking for printing text for the most part, then I'd suggest getting a laser printer.  You'll get THOUSANDS of prints as opposed to hundreds with an inkjet/bubblejet.
Also, the price of color LASERS have come down dramatically.  I have a Xerox Phaser 6120 that I use for printing my business cards and brochures.  With it (at the time) being on sale, plus a coupon from Staples + free delivery, I got it for under $300.  Works great

It'll be for printing pictures as well. How do Laser printers hold up on that end of the deal?

Thanks for the links, I've read the second before, but not the first. It seems to be getting fairly good in the reviews (I think) as opposed to the lexmark I've got at the moment. Are these good yields for cartridges?
290 pages of 6 x 4-inch photos - Magenta
4340 pages of 6 x 4-inch photos - Large "ContrastPLUS" Black
1600 pages of 6 x 4-inch photos - Standard Black
436 pages of 6 x 4-inch photos - Cyan
331 pages of 6 x 4-inch photos - Yellow

Seems good to me, as opposed to my Lexmark, which is 8 full colour pages and then it's empty. And each cartridge in the Lexmark is $50 (there's a black and a colour), whereas the Canon is $25. Whaddya think?

-StephenWhen you say "8 full colour pages", is that photos or what?  That level of ink consumption seems UNBELIEVABLE.  So, I presume you're talking about photos.  I don't print photos on my printer.  I get the digital prints I want from Wal-mart or some other retail photo development shop.  I believe it's actually more economical.

I have two older Canon printers, a BJC-2000, which uses one color cartridge and one black cartridge.  The color cartridge for it costs about $20 plus tax at Wal-mart.  The other printer, a BJC-3000, like the PIXMA iP5300, uses separate cartridges for the three colors and one black cartridge.  I do think the separate color cartridges can save money just because each color may be consumed at different rates and can be replaced separately.  Yeah, I agree, I think the separate cartridges is a good idea. And yes, they are full colour pages of either photo's or poster presentations for assignments etc.

Solve : DVD drive no longer recognises DVDs but still reads CDs?

Answer»

Hi,

My sisters dvd drive has stopped recognising DVDs. In the past she has had no problem with it and it still reads and plays CDs.

The drive is a HL-DT-ST DVD+-RW GWA4164B

I have installed PowerDVD but that hasnt helped. If i INSERT a DVD and go into "my computer" and click on the disk drive there is just nothing recognised.

she is running Windows XP.

Could this be a driver error or is it not likely with it having worked in the past.

Any help much appreciated

Thanks

GazMost combo CD/DVD players use 2 lasers, one for CD and one for DVD.
If you can not read a DVD in DOS or Windows then it sounds like a hardware problem.
Laser MAY be dirty, out of alignment/focus or stuffed.
If you can get hold of a laser cleaning DISC it would be WORTH giving it a run

you could also try a FIRMWARE update for that brand  drive.

Solve : ACCESSING BIOS MENUS?

Answer»

I was PLANNING to overclock my PC. I have a socket 939 MSI motherboard with an AwardPhoenix bios. Apparently many PC's that are bought pre-built lock out certain menus in the bios, in particular, the menu needed to improve processor speed. Is there any way to unlock these menus? Or is there something else I can do to improve my processor's speed.  How familiar are you with O.C.ing a PC? There is more involved than simply ramping up your processor speed. If you're not up to speed with this, I would suggest that you do some serious research before making the attempt. Unless, of course, you like heavy doors stops and EXPENSIVE paper weights. I'm not being obnoxious, I just hate to see a perfectly good PC wind up in a SCRAP heap. Not that familiar really. My research only extends to browsing a few websites. All of them make it seem like a pretty simple process. However I except that there's probably more to it than what first meets the eye. Can you recommend a reliable source that can guide me through the process and explain a way to deal with the issue previously raised.  Start Here...

NOTE: Personal observation here...most PEOPLE that overclock will because of personal pride not admit that they just TURNED a thousand bucks into a personal paperweight so take the advice at your own risk...

Solve : xfx GeForce 8500 GT 512 Mb?

Answer»

I RECENTLY had to replace my video card, but now after this one was installed, the graphics seemed worse than the former (256 mb 6800). I know this one must have better graphics, right?

If so, can somebody tell me how to get the graphics better? I already tried coolbits and atitool, but I couldnt figure out how to use coolbits and atitool doesnt work with nvidia apparently. aside from overclocking, is there any other way to get the graphics better?

intel p4 3.2 ghz
nvidia 8500 512 mb
2 gb ram
dell xps g5If you have on-board video, did you disable it, before installing new card?I didnt install the new card, I had it taken to a computer shop to be taken care of. Quote

I recently had to replace my video card
Quote
I had it taken to a computer shop to be taken care of
Which one, then?had to replace the 6800 with 8500.

had some dude do it at protech computers. The 6800 is superior to the 8500.
Sorry, but you downgraded your video.Calum, is this a departure, then, from the general pattern of cards with higher-number model numbers being the LATER models and having faster graphics chips?  Not necessarily.
The first number denotes the series of the card, so the 8500 is two serieses (is that a word?) aove the 6800.
The second and third numbers denote how powerful it is within that series.
The 6800 was the top of the line from the 6 series, the 8500 is the second from bottom of the 8 series.  Even though it's a newer card, and therefore supports newer technologies, it's actually slower.
They keep changing though, so a card with second number 5 MAY be the middle card of one series, and in the next series the bottom.
It's all marketing tricks.

Hope that clears things up a little.Good explanation.  Thanks.Nice info, Calum thats f*****g great, so I spend over 140 dollars to get something worse. what would I have to get to get something of equal graphics? a d**n 8800? thats b******t, I cant even afford the one I bought, let alone something like that. Im in debt now because of this f*****g video card. Im taking it BACK and demanding my money back. In fact I even told the *censored* that I wanted a better quality graphics card, so he lied to me. Wow that really sucks dude. But I must admit that numbering scheme fooled me as well. I would have thought the 8500 was faster simply because it was 2 series "newer" than the 6800. But after looking at benchmarks I can see Calum (of course) is right and the 8500 is actually quite a bit slower than the 6800.
If you follow this link you can compare the two cards with a whole range of benchmarks.this is so depressing... well christmas is coming up soon, I can only hope for an 8600 gts or 8800 lol. plus I have a $50 check I cant cash cuz my account is overdrawn, so I suppose I should get a job =P.

also, looking at that chart, it shows thats some 320 mb cards are faster than their 640 mb counterparts, as well as 256 and 512, why is this? it shows that their graphics are better yet their memory is less, does memory have nothing to do with graphics? if so, *censored* is does memory even do for a graphics card? the same thing RAM does? The memory on a graphics card is used to store the graphics data the GPU is going to process. The RAM on a graphics card is a lot faster than the system RAM the rest of the computer uses. So by storing the data in video ram the GPU has a lot faster access to it compared to if it had to get it from the system RAM. So the amount of RAM determines how much data the GPU has fast access to but has no INFLUENCE on how fast a GPU can process the data.
So more memory doesn't necessarily equals a faster graphics card.so after hearing that, im assuming a larger amount of memory on a video card is more for things like 3d graphic design, but not optimized for use with games, right?

Solve : Computer not booting, lights flash once then nothing?

Answer»

Hello,

Specs:

Gigabyte M55-SLI 4
AMD 64 x2 4200+ 2.2 GHz
e-GeForce 8800 GTS
40 GB Seagate IDE HDD - master
120 GB Seagate IDE HDD - slave
2 GB (2x1GB) A-DATA DDR2 800
Zumax X3 series ZU-550w
Windows XP SP 2

This system worked for about 1 week and today it does as the title says. I push the power button on the front panel of the case and the LED lights for the HDD flash on then off one time, the same for the PSU fan in the back. In order to get the lights to flash again I have to depress the power button in front for 10 seconds or remove the power cable, turn the PSU off, PLUG the power cable back in and then turn the PSU on. This lead me to believe that SOMETHING is MAKING the PSU SHUT itself off, but I can't figure out what. There's nothing that could cause a short that I can see, and there wasn't any kind of power surge earlier.

Also, my mouse is getting power, and the ethernet LED in the back flashes once when I turn the PSU on with the power cable in.

Any kind of help would be appreciated

Solve : Help... Monitor No Signal & CD-ROM no power?

Answer»

Hello, please HELP....

My 4 YEAR old Gateway desktop powers up fine, making the same normal noise as it had been working.  However, my monitor shows no SIGNAL (tried a different monitor) and I see that CD-ROM is not powered up, so it won't open....  When I see the back of the desktop, all lights are on...  I called Gateway, they said that video card is not working - but when I informed CD-ROM has no power, he said that it seems that my PC is infected by Spyware and in ORDER to remove it I need to purchase $199 tech support, and possibly video card....  Would you suggest that I should do what Gateway SAYS, or do you have any other suggestions??

Solve : 12 Volt runs low even with new power supy?

Answer»

Hi,
I'm new but know a little bit about PC's but this has me stumped. I have MSI PM8M v motherboard with a 2.66Ghz pros 512 RAM. I like this board as it can tell me when the power is PLAYING up. I lost everything last year when PC went and took my HD with it. Anyway, this morning l turn it on and the 12 Volt was down to 6.89 and no matter what l took off, it was still the same. I'm down to the hard drive only.
Please!!! any ideas??

Thanks for your time.

AnnieWhere are the power readings from ? ?
What brand and wattage of PSU ? ?Hi and thanks,
With the motherboard COMES a thing called alert 4 which gives you all the power specs. I'm hoping thats what you meant. I have pic's if you want.
The PSU is a Coolmaster 500W i GREEN power. I have even used a cheap PSU and it still gives me the same specs. This is a new Mboard by the way.

Thanks

Solve : Nvidia Geforce 8800 GTS reboot Problem?

Answer»

hi.
I have a duo core 6600 with 2MB ram, and Nvidia Geforce 8800 GTS 320mb. Well I have just started playing Call Of Duty 4, on all its highest settings and it runs like a dream, my resolution is 1280x1024. and it great. but i have noticed that all of a sudden in random parts of the game my computer will just resart itself. with no warning. now this happened before on oblivion when i used a no cd patch, but i tried it without the patch and it works fine, but sadley thats not the case for COD4. someone SAID it could be my power supply which is 600watt, and also drivers which i have them all up-to-date. but also i have 3 fans in my comp, but i must say the card it self does feel just a bit hot, not red hot tho.
Does anyone not what to do PLEASE??To determine if it is a heat related issue remove a side PANEL and place a small desk fan blowing into the case...play a few sessions and if the freezing stops then you need ADDITIONAL cooling.
If it still freezes you have other issues...i have just tried oblivion again and to be honest the way it reboots i would maybe think its power supply, yes it is 600w, but could it be faulty?. but could do without buying a £40 POWERSUPPLY and the same thing happens. It only happens on top top games like COD4 and Oblivion. I mean i have Pro Evo Soccer 2008 and it works mint and dont do the same thing. I mean COD4 graphics are fantastic. and it runs great but randomly that crappy restart happens.

Cheers for replyingWhat make is the PSU ? ?
It could be the CDRom emulator as well...right! just had a check. it has Jou Jye Electronics Co Ltd. (Designed for Pentium4)
600w (max) Model:jj-600. thats the only info on the PSU. Also i only know limited stuff about a PC what do u mean when u say the CD emulator? Iv only had this comp about 3 months and i noticed this problem on oblivion right away but i thought it could av been driver problem.Joy Jye doesn't exactly inspire confidence as a quality PSU brand...
But it still may not be your issue.
Any of your gaming buddies have a high end PSU you could swap in there to see if it makes a difference before you spend any cash ? ?Sadly no, i really dont want to spend anymore money to find out that it is not the problem, and yes i agree the PSU sounds shite, sure i PAID £30  for that crap. whatr else did you say it might be? CD rom emulator?

Solve : PC will automatically turn on?

Answer»

Yesterday, my computer just fine then between 10 to 20 minutes somethings like "BOOM" inside my system unit. So everything went down. When I PRESSED the power button it won't turn ON anymore. So I suspected that the problem is the PSU. I REPLACED PSU using my Dad's PSU just to diagnose if it's the PSU is the culprit. So when I plugged it on my computer will automatically turn on. So what's going on with my computer?

Please help me with my problem...When I plugged it on the outlet the PSU fan and Processor fan both are spinning too. My Dad's PSU don't have YONG parang switch at the back of the PSU where you can switch to 115V and 230V. While my PSU (which is already dead) have.In regards to the first post:
Some motherboards are set to automatically turn back on after system failure. Likely, your PSU blew up, then the replacement was a working PSU so it automatically booted up.

In regards to the second post:
Having a spinning fan on the PSU and CPU are usually good signs when the computer is on...

In regards to your last post:
That switch's existence shouldn't be an issue if the PSU is working

So what will I suppose to do sir?make sure the psu you have and install suitable to handle your current hardware, or it gonna blow again.Use a psu calc to calc your psu usage.

http://www.extreme.outervision.com/psucalculatorlite.jspMy advice is to go into your BIOS settings, and search for something along the lines of "Auto Power On After Failure" or "Auto Boot After Power Failure" and turn that to off, as opposed to on. This should solve the automatic booting problem (if that's what the problem was from the start). Let me know if that helps.

-StephenWhen i plug it to the outlet, the computer starts and also processor fan and PSU fan start spinning but no display on the monitor.are you using any graphic card?re-seat it and check for any loose cables. And also check that maybe you didn't have a power SURGE initially, which would've caused the monitor to blow as well (and would explain the PSU explosion). My videocard is built-in sir...I'll check the PSU and post back for the result.Try another monitor also in the meantime. Is it CRT of LCD? And is it DVI or VGA?Update:

I tried other monitor but no avail. When I plug it on, the computer automatically start but no display. Just notice, the red led or the power button will only light. But the green led won't function anymore. What do you think is the problem?Justin...

Solve : Canon S900 Photo Printer?

Answer»

The "used ink tank" is almost full. Is there a site that I can get instructions as to how to empty the tank? Am I better off taking it 40 miles to the canon service CENTER?
Thanks in advance...TinwhistleWelcome aboard
Any particular reason, you want to empty it?Hi Broni, thanks for the welcome. The warning flag from the printer say's  when the used ink tank is "full" the printer will not work
I took it to the local computer shop (not canon approved), he didn't want to touch it, saying that if something broke he doubted if there were parts for a printer this OLD, but did SHOW me what needed to be DONE. So I guess I'll try to fix it myself. Keep US posted..

Solve : Gateway not starting!?

Answer»

I've got a Gateway that won't start...been modified a bit, here are the specs

AMD Athlon X2 3800+ 2.0GHz Dual-Core Processor
Standard MoBo and 250GB HDD (Not REALLY sure what each are)
Antec TruPower Trio 650w PSU
eVGA GeForce 8600 GTS 512MB GPU
G.Skill 2x1GB DDR-400 Memory w/ Heat Spreader
Extra Thermaltake 80mm Case Fan
Windows Media Center 2005

When I press the start button the Start LED comes on for a fraction of a second and the computer does not start then a few seconds later it will do it again and again until I let go. No fans or beeps, nothing except for a pop in the speakers like it's trying to boot. The PSU, GPU, and Memory are only 2 months old, the Computer itself is a year and a half. It's been difficult to start recently, having to hold the button in for 2 seconds or so before boot. Then I had a power outage 2 days ago, the comp restarted fine, TURNED it off to INSTALL a new Keyboard and Mouse and now it wont start. Could the power outage have had something to do with it? The Comp is backed by a surge protector, if that helps.Unplug the machine from the wall.
On the rear of the PSU there is an on off switch...toggle this 5 or 6 times.
( Make sure this is not the Voltage switch which is RED )
Then do the same with the computer power button.
Plug everything back in and see...
Thanks for the reply, Patio! Well I pulled everything out and plugged it into the wall in the kitchen as a last ditch EFFORT before trying my old PSU...and it started right up! Put it back and plugged everything back in, nothing, plugged it straight into the wall and it fired right up. I'm assuming that my surge protector either has too much stuff on it or its failing so I am going tonight to buy a new one.  This couldn't be better news...
It means the surge protector did it's job...( they don't always )
And it means the machine itself should be fine...
Congrats !

Solve : computer diagnosis?

Answer»

i have a broken computer im trying diagnosis whats wrong.

well the problem is that it wont go past this screen (picture below) i have picked every single option but it the computer just restarts.

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/setup/support/nostart.mspx1.  What operating system and service pack level are you using?  Windows XP Home Edition SP2?

2.  If the following item is on your Windows Advanced Options Menu, select it and your system hopefully will stop on a Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) with error message text and numbers.  Copy the text and numbers exactly as they appear and post them to this forum:

Disable automatic restart on system failureim guessing its windows xp sp 2

any ways the whole middle part is missong my only options are

safe mode
safe mode /w net
safe mode /w cmd

last known good config

start win norm

1.  More Info.  I'm going to need more information on what we have to work with.  For now I'm just assuming you have Windows XP.  I don't know whether it's "Home Edition" or "Professional"; Original, Service Pack 1 (SP1), or SP2.

By the way does "SP1" in your motto "I love YaBB 1GB - SP1!" mean anything... like "Service Pack 1"?

Without the "Disable automatic restart on system failure" item, I don't know how to stop the restart... without fixing the problem... which we can't identify... because of the restart cycle.

If anyone knows how to "make" the system speak and provide error message text and numbers, don't hold back.  But I cannot and will not condone water torture or any so called "enhanced" interrogation techniques.  Would you consider shipping the system to Eastern Europe? Egypt?  Alberto Gonzales' last known address?

2.  System Specs (whatever you know):
    a.  Manufacturer:
    b.  Model:
    c.  Motherboard:
    d.  Year Made:

    e.  Operating System (Home/Professional, Original/SP1/SP2).  Was system purchased with current operating system pre-installed?

    f.  HARD Drive (Capacity- Partitions - Free Space):
    g.  Memory:
    h.  CD-ROM:
    i.   Floppy Drive:

3.  Recovery Resources:
     a.  OEM Recovery Partition (Hidden on Hard Drive?):
     b.  OEM Recovery CD
     c.  Windows XP Setup CD (Home/Professional, Original/SP1/SP2)
     d.  Windows XP Setup Disks (set of six floppy disks):

4.  Little bit of history about this problem.  Any hardware/software changes and/or problems before the restart cycle began?  Did you power down without following proper shutdown procedure for the operating system?

5.  Unless someone knows how to force error message, I think you'll need to use the Windows XP "Recovery Console" to proceed towards a solution.  It can be booted up from either the Windows XP Setup CD or the six floppy disk Windows XP Setup Disks.  See the following link to download and make the six volume floppy disk set:

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310994/en-us

If we can get into the Recovery Console, I'd recommend checking the integrity of the file system and surface of the disk in the partition upon which it resides.  This would be either the "chkdsk -p" or "chkdsk -r" command executed against both the system and boot volumes if they are different.
i dont know if this helps but

heres my motherboard info

its got 40 gb
its has 2 sticks 128 256

and it has a cd and floppy drive

and it can run boot cds take a look at this i have it on a cd and it works

http://ubcd.sourceforge.net/Why don't try repairing your system with your windows installation CD. maybe that will work.don't have it anymore its a real old comp

its a compaq passario 6000im still trying to diagnose the problem i put a old hardrive in and this is what happen

my linux os wont boot all the way it pauses at the [ok] and then it just stopsAre you runinig 2 operating systems?no its 2 hard drives

the first one window
2nd linux

i switched the windows one out to see if it might be a hardrive problem

but both dont seem to load up

i put in a ubuntu 7.10 live disk and it booted up (just more info)More info- well i asked my cousin what he had done to the comp before he gave it to me and he said he booted and shut it down constantly

also i have deduced it is not a HD problem or a Ram problem Quote from: Crono on November 15, 2007, 03:52:15 PM

1.  So...  The computer was "broken" when you received it?  (That is, you've never been able to successfully boot it into Windows?)

2.  It is not a HD problem because...  You ran the manufacturer's hard drive diagnostics to ensure the physical drive works?

3.  It is not a Ram problem because...  You ran a reputable memory test for twenty-four hours with no errors?1.  During the boot process do you ever see:

    a.  A progress bar displayed at the bottom of the screen.  If so, at what point during the boot process?  Before the "Windows Advanced Options Menu" display or after?

    b.  The graphical Windows XP logo screen (as Windows operating system is loading).  If so, at what point during the boot process?  Before or after you make your selection on the Windows Advanced Options Menu to continue?

2.  If your Ubuntu 7.10 live disk (CD?) boots and RUNS, then it sounds like you have a problem with the file system, system files, or device drivers used by Windows XP being loaded from your hard drive.

3.  Sounds like you do not have:
     o  Windows XP Setup CD
o  OEM Recovery CD (aka Restore CD)

Do you know if the hard drive contains a "hidden" OEM Recovery Partition?

4.  Remove Devices  - first remove all non-essential peripheral devices (e.g. printers, scanners, USB devices, audio devices, etc.) so that only the display, keyboard and mouse are still connected.  See if system boots.

5.   If not, proceed with the Windows XP Recovery Console to see if you can repair your Windows XP installation.  Download the appropriate Windows XP Setup Disks (six volume floppy set for Windows XP Home Edition SP2?) and create the floppy diskettes.

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310994/en-us

Boot into the recovery console from the set of floppys or a Windows XP Home SP2 Setup CD:

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307654

    a.  Use the "chkdsk c: /r" command to verify the integrity of your file system where "C:" is the logical disk that contains your operating system:

    http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/r_c_cmds.htm#Chkdsk

    b.  If system still does not boot (try Safe Mode first), you can return to recovery console to verify your boot files are present and correct (they are PROBABLY hidden, system, read only files):
    o  Boot.ini
    o  NTLDR
    o  NTDetect.com

    c.  If your boot files are present and correct (not corrupt), then attempt to enable boot logging and see if you can read boot log from recovery console "more C:\Windows\NTbtlog.txt" or "type C:\Windows\Ntbtlog.txt".  Look for problems noted within the bootlog.

Heres the breakdown

HD test
got another hardrive that i knew worked the os was linux
it did not boot up
hence i assumed that it might not be a hardrive problem not sure till i test the first hard drive but this means that there is something more than a hard drive problem

Ram Test
simple replaced the ram ram a test said it was error free

Cpu test
In progress
the program said it was 1 week to test 1 thing

1. A and B no i do not see them
it goes compaq then strait to the safemode options that dont work

2.im not sure if its a hardrive thing but ILL test the hardrive on my comp later too

3.im not sure if i have a recovery partition can you tell me how to get to this?

4.ill try that and get back

5.again ill try and get back to you

LATEST UPDATE
This is wired i WANTED to test out the new ubuntu 7.10 so using the live cd i installed it and it worked it booted all the way up

Solve : Transfering info on HD's?

Answer»

Is there a way to transfer OS & all your dats from one HD to another? I know when you buy a NEW HD some give a program to do this...I recieved a 40Gb HD from a friend that I would like to swap my 8Gb to, if possible...any free programs that will help with this...or do i have to start from scratch??
Thanks!!Travel to the 40G HDD manuf. site and DLoad their free utilities...use these to create a bootable CD.
Hook up the 40G as a slave drive and boot with the CD in.
Then select the cloning utility and clone the 8G to the 40G.
Power down and remove the 8G completely...HOOKING up the 40G as master.
Power up and you should be good to go....
You can then later add the 8G as a slave drive and after being sure everything RUNS fine then format it and use it for extra storage...Ok...Thanks so much!!!You're Welcome...let us know.

Solve : PC runs but monitor goes to sleep mode when started - no picture?

Answer» TRIED another PC and monitor does work so not a bad monitor. PC runs and drive operates when disc in but does not transfer picture or IMAGE to monitor.  Also tried bad PC on a different monitor and it will not transmit a picture to that monitor either.  Also, was freezing up often prior to this problem.

Did you use same monitor cable, or monitor cable from second computer?

You may need to update your video drivers. What model of that Compaq?PresarioModel NUMBER?7PL 7000Z Series
LOOOOOOOL....it looks like

Did you use same monitor cable, or monitor cable from second computer?
2 different MONITORS on 2 different towers.  The Compaq tower does not turn on either monitor and each monitor had separate cables.  but both monitors worked with the spare tower.Does Compaq have separate video card, or on-board video?
If separate card, try to reseat it, try in second computer.did that and is still the same.  it also is not hooked to internet - is used for kids computer games only since I got a new computer myself.Borrow a working vid card and swap it in there and see what happens... Quote
did that and is still the same
Explain, please. Video card from first (bad) computer, doesn't work in good one?All I did was pull cards and put back in did not use vid card from another computer. not sure what vid card looks like but pulled every card and put back in same slot.  The "good" computer is very very old maybe 10 YRS. or more. Look at the back of your computer. You'll see a port, where you connect your monitor. If inside your computer, there is a card connected to that monitor port, you DO have a video card. If there is no card, you have on-board video chip.
What do you have?Your monito is overdued it is time to get a new one.
sometimes monitor do behave like that when they are exhausted

Solve : Cracked Hard Drive??

Answer»

Okay so we have this hard drive from our computer. The computer runs for about 8 minutes and then it will shut off. We got a new power supply but didnt try it yet. They guy at circut city said it might be cracked. I was wondering maybe you know what the problem is or how to FIX it. Its got lots of OLD pics that we need so WOULD there be anyway to like transfer the pics to a new HDD?Hook it up as a slave drive in a working machine and retrieve your data...
Before running it again in your machine DLoad and run the diagnostics available Free from the drive manuf. site.
If it checks out OK then go ahead and INSTALL your new PSU.
If there were power problems before you may have to re-install Windows and all your drivers so make sure to back up anything important when you still have it hooked up in a working machine.

Never ask someone from Circuit City for computer advice...

Solve : New Graphics card problems.?

Answer»

Just bought my self a new Graphics card (Ati Radeon 2600 512mb) since ive installed it, Ive had nothing but trouble with it, also Other parts of my computer i have gone no where near :S im not one normally for asking for help on these things and i can normally sort it all out but this is just

Start off, As i set it up, Got the machine running, and for some reason ive gone from 1700 odd of ram to just 1024mb, checked several times as to the reason behind that, all conected correctly, didnt go near them while fitting my graphics card in. No idea what so ever what is wrong.

Secondly no sound... lol no idea where this is gone, Just stoped working :S Tried several times, speakers are PERFECTLY fine and are working, just not getting anything from the pc in the way of sound. run several tests in dxdiag, was getting nothing through there, just said it was working correctly.

Lastly, After getting my graphics card working and updating the drivers, I thought i WOULD try a game, to see the effect this new graphics card had on my graphics... So started up Call of duty 4 (off topic, AWESOME GAME), some reason it had changed my profile graphic settings to somthing else.. I tried to change any of the settings such as resulution, The game Closed down and Said i had a direct x problem. Reinstalled direct 9c, Closed me straight down once again...

REALLY wish i never bought the god damned thing now.

Any ideas anyone?

Solve : comp shuts off during install (XP disc)?

Answer»

Shynnie I built the computer a couple months ago.  It worked fine (on the 30-day trial from the Dell XP CD-- my sister's), but as soon as I tried installing a copy of XP (for which I had a serial), the issue started.  I don't doubt that it's a hardware issue, it just seems odd to me that the problem would start without ANY changes in hardware.

I'll try out MemTest and a new IDE cable when I get home late tonight.  I have 2 identical sound cards in the computer, I'll be sure to take both of those out as well-- those are the only PCI cards, though (i think...).Having two sound cards installed may be the problem...Hi obviously I'm new but I was searching everywhere for an ANSWER to this problem as I seem to be having a similar one I am installing a new to me (but used) hard drive in my laptop.  Mine will start it gets past entering the product code and once it says the installation will complete in approximately 19 min it shuts off almost as if it went into STANDBY mode but of course when i turned it back on it had to restart setup. Once I restarted it happened again at the same place.(about 4 times) Is it possible that mine is just a hard drive problem? Any suggestions? Quote from: justtinee on November 03, 2007, 01:59:36 PM

Yes.
Start a new topic with as many details you can provide on your system, OS and where this drive CAME from and someone will be along shortly.
This way it can recieve the proper attention...I swapped out the IDE cable and took out the two sound cards-- problem remains.  Was about to consider buying a new mobo when I thought to myself, "why not try yet another cd drive?" And sure enough, I try it with a THIRD cd drive, and it works.  Who knows, MAYBE both of the other two drives are screwy, maybe not, I think I'm going to just chuck them both out regardless.

Thanks again for all the help.
-AndrewI had the same problem, until I used a bootleg version and everything was perfect.  Try another disc. The disk I was having problems with i've used on 5 other computers with no problem. try that and let us KNOW

Solve : custom building desktop?

Answer»

Ive been looking for some help. I just bought a new custom built desktop out of ebay. RIGHT now, im upgrading in some few area for gaming. I have Pentium D  3.0GHz Dual Core  2GB DDR2, 3,000 MHz, 2,000 MB ram, 250 GB hhd hooked up with biostar mobo http://www.pcstats.com/articleview.cfm?articleID=2055 (for detailed spec).

Im not sure what i have to do and what stuff i can upgrade with.

Im thinkin of upgrading

1) Geforce 8600 GT 512MB  DDR2 = will it work?
2) AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+ Processor = will it work? do i have to buy whole another mobo to hook up with that or just swap my chip on same mobo?    An AMD CPU will not work in a Pentium MBoard...
You only have 2 RAM slots so you are maxxed out there as WELL unless you were to get a pair of 2G RAM modules.
The vid card will be fine if it's a PCI-Eok...i will be gettin that video card and yes, i have PCI-e x16. About the amd cpu...what the best cpu i can get? SORRY if none of this make sense, im building a desktop for first time ever to learn before building a better one.If it is this MBoard you are going to use just look up Socket 775 CPU's and you will see your upgrade choices...
As always check the MBoard documentation before making a purchase.Out of all motherboards why did you choose that one .... its lacking pci ports , and its also lacking usb ports , theres also only 1 pci-express port ..... vital elements if you ever wish to add upgrades.

Tony Patio: You recommended socket 775 for this mobo...will this one http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3241565 works?

tony: I didnt choose this mobo...lol...this seller gave me this and of course i know this mobo isnt any good but better than nothing for now. (i have usb ports) I will purchase better mobo with 2 pci express for dual gfx cards in future.

Thanks, I always know this site is very useful.  The Pentium Dual Core chip you linked to will work, and will actually give you comparable or better performance than your current chip at much lower speeds and heat.
What's your budget for upgrades?
Once we know this we can advise you on what's best to buy.my budgets for upgrade will be TOTAL around 1 thousand or 2. But, Im only going to upgrade some stuff such as mobo, chip, and video card. Avg about $100-150 per items because i have lots of things to pay such as rent, bills, car insurance and crap My advice therefore is to go for this or this for your CPU.  The former is cheaper, the latter is more powerful, but both are powerful dual core CPUs.
Graphics card: this, this and this all fall within your price range, and offer good performance, from first to last in increasing order.wow thanks. I will be def. gettin that Intel core 2 duo E4500 cpu and that graphic card is in my list too. But...is 256mb slower than 512 mb? can i run 512? not sure....512 mb of memory , would be a lot better than 256mb , the speed all depends on the type of memory your motherboard supports .

512mb will enable to have a few more applications without the hang ...... 256mb in my opinion is pathetic ..... go with 512 or atleast 1gb of memory.

Tony i have 2k of memory...im talkin about  the graphic card such as 256 mb 512 or higher...is it slower or faster, better visual, faster sending packet or what?Which graphics card are you talking about here?
My advice is to go for the second card, it provides more bang for your buck and at $109.99 ($89.99 with rebate), it's a good price.
More graphics RAM helps it handle more textures (surfaces) in games without loading more data.  It's not always the case, but within the same series (i.e. two 8600's) more RAM is better.
Does that help?yeah does help me understand alot...thanks

I will be gettin those 8600  cards...

Plus i founded out i lost my instll cd for windows xp pro...so i guess first thing i should buy is windows vista or xp...

will vista works? I just HEARD some ppl said vista wont work well on some computer? Vista will run OK on that machine performance-wise, however you will notice better performance with XP.
Different people will tell you different things, I for one don't like Vista at all so am very biased in this topic.
Take a look around the web and see what people have to say about the merits and disadvantages of each before reaching a decision.
If you want, you could always dual boot both of them . . .

Solve : monitor shows strange pattern when pc is turned on?

Answer»

Hello all, i recently bought a new hp desktop computer, PRIOR to that by about 3 months i bought a viewsonic flatscreen monitor(the one that has usb ports and charging for ipod), they worked fine together for about a week or two. now EVERYTIME i turn the computer on for the day---the monitor shows patterns and not the windows. the patterns are either blue stripes, or orange and pink geometrical shapes, usually the patterns change every few seconds, never taking me to the windows. i have to turn the pc off and turn it back on, then i get windows, sometimes it asks me how i want to start the computer, and sometimes it doesn;t. i have tried turning the pc on first, or turning the monitor on first, neither gives good results. any help is APPRECIATED, thanks:)This sounds to me like the VIDEO card/chip is going bad...but it could also be the monitor.
Double check to make sure the monitor connections are secure.
If they are and the problem is still there then you need to hook the monitor up to another machine...if it does the same thing then the monitor has issues.
If it's fine then it's the video card/chip on your new machine...Contact hp immediately and take advantage of your warrranty.

Solve : Viewing DVD movies?

Answer»

SEHello, everyone:
Would you please tell me, if you can, how can I play DVD MOVIES on my computer which is using Win98 SE.  Do I have to use a special software?  If so, can I download such software from internet? To view a DVD movie on any computer no matter what OS you need to have a DVD-rom drive on the system.  Does your computer have a DVD-rom drive?  (You can tell by looking on the drive, it should say DVD-rom right on the front.  Also, you need a program to play the DVD.  If you have a DVD-rom drive it should have come with some type of software.  MINE came with PowerDVD.  I'm not sure if you can download a free program for viewing DVDs.  Maybe someone else knows of a free program?VLC... VLC...

If anyone reading along is interested,  the link is:
http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-windows.html

Note that it says:
Quote
Windows 95/98/Me users: Please note that these versions of Windows are not officially supported. No VideoLAN developer uses any of these systems, which makes them hard to support. VLC should mostly work with them, but some incompatibilities might appear. You might need to download The Microsoft Layer for Unicode on Windows 95/98/Me Systems. The two MSLU files need to be put in the C:\Windows\System\ folder.

and a link is provided for downloading it.

Using Win98SE here.
I have VLC installed, and have the MSLU files.
VLC runs, and plays most - not all - video files.   Some are unwatchable though.  Very herky-jerky.    I'm not big on video files, so I have never really explored it to see if it can be improved.

I can't comment on DVDs.   No DVD player here.

This one is suppose to work with Win 98:
http://downloads.zdnet.com/download.aspx?&kw=dvd+player&docid=304298You need at least DVD-Rom drive and a software capable of PLAYING DVD's.

GOM player, VLC player, Windows Media Player, Windows Media Player Classic, Real Player, AVS Player...

any of these freeware softwares can play dvd media fine. I prefer either windows media player or real player but you CHOOSE what software you like best.

Solve : Boot management?

I have a gateway E series P$ computer running Windows XP Home Edition. I have two hard drives (C & E). What must I do when the computer boots to have it ask me which hard DRIVE do I want to boot up?Depends if you have an OPERATING system on both drives...EXACTLY, it depends on which of them has the Os on it. It's usually C from my experience. All other letters are used for slaves or extra cd/dvd drives and what not.I THINK it has something to do with the Boot.INI file on the "C" drive. Yes it does, but unless an OS is on the second drive, It'll be pointless.

Solve : No Prompt At All in XP Recovery Console?

Answer»

Hi-

I am stumped!  Have a Seagate 120GHz PATA hard drive partioned as 40GB for WinXP Pro (SP2) and 80GB as data.  While backing up C: and D: drives using Ghost10, the computer seized up and now will not boot.

BIOS recognizes drive and has no problem with it.
Windows starts to load but then the error:
     **********************************************************
Windows could not start because the following FILE is missing or corrupt:

      \system32\ntoskrnl.exe.

Please reinstall a copy of the above file.
     **********************************************************

I tried slaving the bad drive to an older drive with xp on it, but Windows will not see the slaved drive even in the Disk Management nor in explorer.

Partition Magic SAYS that the label of the primary, active partition is a whole bunch of question marks.  The second partition says:  DSK1_VOL2, but has an error#1516:  Partition Improperly Dismounted.

GDISK (Norton Ghost's version of FDISK) does not give any errors...
     3 partitions:
          1. 40GB active primary
          2. 80GB extended
          3. 80GB logical

I am now trying the XP recovery console (from my actual xp install disk...not a recovery disk)
I am trying to run XP recovery console, but get to a screen where it says:
      **********************************************************
Microsoft Windows XP (TM) Recovery Console.

The Recovery Console provides system repair and recovery functionality.

Type EXIT to quit the Recovery Console and restart the computer.
      **********************************************************

But no prompt EVER appears...even after an HOUR.  So I cannot run chkdsk or anything!

I suspect my primary partition is very corrupt, and the data partition is maybe hidden or also corrupt.  I am MOSTLY interested in my data and not as much about the OS.

Anyone with any thoughts-thanks!

Cathy
You could have a hard drive going bad.

You can try using Blindwrite to MAKE a duplicate copy
of your install disk it may be corrupt.

Sometimes a copy will work where the original did not.

Solve : is dynex power supply any good??

Answer»

Are dynex PSU's RELIABLE? Are they a GOOD brand to BUY? Has anybody tried them out?

I have never bought dynex products before except for some dynex cd-r's, which had no problem.

I see that best buy is selling dynex PSU's (I CHECKED their website), so I assume Dynex is fine to use, if best buy is willing to stock up on it and sell them.

If I were to use it with the ATI 2600XT graphics card, it would be ok?

I don't want to have to just buy the PSU to find out LATER that it's crap.

The server has two hard drives in it. I'm guessing they are raid. To make a long story short, I need to get some information off of the second HD. When I boot to Windows I cannot view the other HD. Just the one in bay 1. I have been through CMOS as far as I can understand and don't see how to enable this or disable what I need. I HOPE this MAKES better since to some of you. This is my first party with this type. I know this is brief, let me know what other info I can provide.

Thanks!Does your computer reconize your 2cd HDD. In DISK Manager does it show up? or even in My Computer possibly as D:\?  if it shows in Disk Manager what staus is the HDD? (Basic Healthy or something else)..What IM getting at is that it has to be recognized in CMOS before anything can be done with or to your HDD.. Depending on what type of RAID array is will determine what data is on that drive...
More info.Sorry for the delay. I have been extremely busy. I'm still gathering a little information and will get back to you as soon as POSSIBLE. Again, thanks for the help and sorry for the "stall".

Solve : graphic card and mobo compatable?

Answer»

Hi guys need HELP with an issue over graphic card, at present i have an nvideagforce 6500 tried to upgrade to ati radeon 9600XT, and all goes well till boot up gets as far as screen coming on then goes black.
question is does anyone know if this card is compatable with my motherboard ??
details of computer is

939turbo amd athlon 64 proccessor 3500+2.2ghz 1gb ram
i am running win xp home sp2
the card slot is pci express slot 16 lane
I am not very techy so i hope you can understand what i have put down ! Sylvia is on Holiday...

How can we tell if it's compatible without knowing what MBoard we're talking about ? ?Both the OLD card and the new one are PCI Express cards, right?Well, we need clarification on this point.  Is the gforce 6500 a physical card that you removed before you installed the new video card?No one is thinking you are stupid here...
But when troubleshooting problems too much info on the machine, components and OS is better than not enough.
If you change your GFX card from a Nvidia to an ATI, the drivers will conflict, this may be your problem?

Try putting your old card in, uninstalling the drivers and then changing cards...

Solve : Problems with rebooting?

Answer»

I have been having PROBLEMS with my COMPUTER starting up for a about a MONTH now.  I think it may be the graphics card, but I would like to know for sure before I buy a new card.
Upon starting up the computer, EVERYTHING seems normal, until it goes to the "window is starting" screen.  Sometimes it just hangs there, while other times it will go to a black screen afterwards.
I suspect it is the graphics card, because it has been overheating and I have had to blow a fan directly into the case to KEEP it at a cooler temperature.
My computer is an AMD Athlon 64x2 dual core with 1 GB of DDR ram.  The motherboard was replaced about six months ago and is an Asus A8V-VM SE.  The graphics card is a NVIDIA GeForce 6200.  The computer other than the motherboard is about three years old.
Are there any home diagnostics I can do on the computer to find out if it is the graphics card?  Any suggestions would be appreciated.  The best way to diagnose if it is the card would be to swap it into a known working machine...install the drivers for it and see if it does the same thing.
If it does chances are pretty good that it's the card at fault.

Solve : "no plug in" on graphic with new motherboard?

Answer»

Hi,

I have this pc, and i changed the motherboard on it. But now the graphic CARD wont work! Neither will the intergrated graphic card on the motherboard.
Although the COOLER is spinning on the graphic card. Its agp and its in the agp slot. I tried taking it off, use the motherboards graphic. But nothing will help, my plug-and-play monitor says "no plug in".

Im not sure if i NEED to modify some jumpers, the manual gives me no information what-so ever. Or maybe to little power supply? My ram? Tried with an really old graphic card - no change.

Pentium 4
Asus p4v8x-mx
dont know about the graphic card, but its not new. I can plug two monitors in it though.

Any help appreciated, bare in mind that im not rich. And i used my saving on this *censored* motherboard  1.  what  new  graphics  card do you have ?   ie...  you have  NO  pci-e  slot ?
2. "                                                             >  card?

integrated chip  didn't  work  either /  How do you know ?

can't  remember but has this  ALL been the same before and  after the new  mobo  purchase ?

Its only agp. I have about 4 pci slots. I dont have a pci graphic card.

I know that the integrated graphic card wouldnt work on the motherboard (or rather,, i suppose) cause i tried removing the agp graphic card. I changed the mobo cause the old mobo wouldnt turn on / went dead.

Its nvidia geforce 4 agp ti 4200, and i can plug two monitors in Quote

Where did this card come from ? ?
It very well may be dead.
Have you tried it in another machine ? ?
This will verify if it works or not... Quote from: Bimm3r on November 09, 2007, 05:01:51 PM

Seems to me you may have mis-diagnosed your original problem and replaced the wrong component.   Perhaps you really needed a new power supply, or perhaps you need both it and the new motherboard.

Doesn't this seem logical, since you get no VIDEO signal, even from onboard video?  In other words, you have no indication that the computer is even booting.  So, you may have problems other than the motherboard.

Was this motherboard replacement your first such undertaking?  Did you use thermal gel when installing your CPU's heatsink?  Quote

Did this computer get a video at all before you started with the graphics card or did you try?  If you feel comfortable and you know where the CMOS jumpers are, you might "reset" with the agp card out. (in other words take out the AGP card and reset CMOS using the onboard jumpers. Then plug all and check monitor, power/cables, light on monitor (what color is it).

Note: Make sure to uplug power to PSU and always put on your wrist strap-ESD (Electrical Static Discharge) while working inside the box.

Your board has 1 agp and 3 pci slots..see steps in manual for CMOS (rtc) reset..Hope this helps (if cmos set itself to boot on AGP instead of onboard when you installed  the card) reset will put it back to factory settings.. Quote from: soybean on November 10, 2007, 03:13:53 PM

S***t

Well, maybe it is the power supply. But the lcd on the case and on the motherboard is on. And the blazers are running. Yes it was my first choice to change the motherboard cause with the old motherboard the pc only wanted to turn on after 200 tries, so i thought it was somekind of defect thing on the motherboard.

I did not use thermal gel...... i just thought it was not so necessary >_< cause i could see there still was a little from the old cpu. No smell of burn, etc.. I hope the cpu isnt screwed.

Solve : Why laser printer expensive??

Answer»

Why laser printer expensive?

What makes it so expensive if we COMPARE it to inkjet printer? There are alot of differences that make each UNIQUE, mostley the fact that ink-jet are primarily for home/small office. Wheras the laser is geared toward large office, speed, quality and uses toner ink instead of cartridge.

here is more specific info: http://ezinearticles.com/?How-to-Differentiate-Between-Laser-Printers-and-Inkjet-Printers&id=298829 They are expensive because of the TECHNOLOGY they use, Unlike Inkjet, it just shoots out ink from the nozzels to the paper DIRECTLY, while Laser uses... well laser to shoot onto the paper itself with the ink in it, thats why the quailty is so high, it doesn't smudge, while having precise accuracy. Thanks guys! Big help!

Solve : I Need Some Major Help?

Answer»

Ok....

So lately I have been experiancing some problems with my computer.

I run an AMD Athlon 64 X2 DUAL core 4400+, and two gigs of ram.

Every time I have tried to download and install something, ( iTunes updates, UT3 demo, jZip) it says something of the matter of the file being corrupt or having an invalid signature.

Also, when I RESTART my computer going through the start button, I get a blue screen error. It only lasts for about a second so I cant really read it.

My JAVA wasnt working EITHER, so I uninstalled it...I have yet to reinstall.

Another wierd thing is that my computer wont run unless there is a corded keyboard hooked up.When i turn my computer on, i cant get my start button to stay up or my bookmarks on firefox or anything like that until i press a button on that corded keyboard (right now i use an usb wireless keyboard). I also Cant drag anything on my desktop.

I have run recent virus scans using Ad-Aware 2007, and my windows updates are current.

p.s. My computer is seeming to freeze more than usual...like during WOW and stuff....I know it hurts your RAM to shut the computer down without going through the start button....so do think that some of my RAM may be corrupt?

If you could give me some information it will be greatly appretiated.

Solve : delayed booting of brand new computer.?

Answer»

Hello, i havent been able to find any similar issues on your forums, so im posting a new thread about a mysterious issue regarding my newly assembled computer.
The thing is, the computer all to often boots about 10 secs or more after i press the power BUTTON. Sometimes, but rarely, it boots as soon as i press the power button. I have a suspicion that the psu is the issue here, since this is a 520w, taken out of my old computer. I kind of need to be certain before i invest in a new one, and since i do not have another psu to test my suspicion, i wanted to know if anyone recognises this issue? or if anyone has had similar problems with their computers? i kind of need a fast response so i can localise the problem, and eventually return some defect parts, before the WARRANTY runs out.

Thanks in Advance!Welcome*

sounds like you have a great grasp at this point...  that is a good place to start (psu)  how old was it  and could you borrow a friends and do some  tests  ...  ?hi, and thanks for your response.  The PSU is about a year/year and a half old.... not quite sure... its a 520 watt, so its quite USABLE on my new computer. i can probably borrow my bros psu, but its only a 300 watt, so im not sure it can power up my new computer... i have never experienced an issue like this... the computer runs great, temperature is cool, games run as expected.. the only problem is the booting... in the morning it starts as soon as i press the power switch, but at evenings it takes about 10/15 secs before it starts up, sometimes even longer.... its just, that a new psu costs alot, especially one with more than 500 watt.. so i gotta be 100 % sure that the psu is the problem, before i go out and buy a new oneThe advice given is the only way to determine if it is in fact the PSU...but i would try and borrow one of at least 450W or greater...
Have you checked in Device Manager for any Yellow !!'s ? ?
This can be caused by a corrupt driver as well.If it is still under warranty I would use that first and pronto. By TRYING to fix it you may void your warranty, make THINGS worse, or at least be taking the responsibility that really belongs to them.

What make and model? Is it an onsite warranty or what? Where did you get it?

Solve : Hard Drive - Disk Management Option - Dynamic / Offline?

Answer»
Dear All,

This problem is Most hot topic in most of the forums. Any one with best suggestion is most appretiated.

I have a system with Two Sata Disk Drives in it ( Samsung 40gb OS Installed - 80gb Samsung for data storage.) The Operating system is Win2000 and second drive is a Dynamic drive.

Recently I have an instance to BACK my data on my both drives to other system as i want to use a VISTA system. I have removed both the drives and backed the first drive with OS 2000 in to my vista system by connecting the drive as slave to that system.

But when i tried to connect the second hard drive which was a dynamic drive on my old system, COULD not able to be seen in the my computer. but the drive was been detected by the PC and in Disk Management Option of administrative tools, was seen as Dynamic / Forine drive. i removed that drive and connected back to my old system, EVEN this time it could not be seen in my computer and was detected and shown as dynamic / offline in Disk Management Option.

More over I tried do all the option like Re activate the disk and Import the forine disk but was invain. I have left only with option that revert to basic disk. But was got some information from support.microsoft.com that by converting it back to basic disk will lost my data on the drive.

This situation is worse for me as i have got my three years work on the drive.

Any positive suggestion is most appreatiated.

With Rgd
Kartheek MHook it up as a slave drive and retrieve your data...i suggest purchasing a DVD burner for burning your backups as ALL hard drives eventually fail.

The problem you are having is that with any Windows OS from Win2K on you cannot simply swap a hard drive from one machine to another and expect it to boot properly...it simply won't work and as MS said you risk losing all your data. This is by design.

Solve : sound works when cable plugged in back, but not in front?

Answer»

to save me some WORK, what's the most common cause of this?On some MACHINES the manufacturers never wire up the front header completely...
Check your MBoard MANUAL for the wiring diagram and open a side panel to see if it's even hooked up.
Or the wires may have come loose themsselves...I am sure you are right.  only i'll have to search online diagrams as the mobo manual is not AVAILABLE.  Thanks for your help.Did it EVER work? What type of machine or motherboard?

I seem to have a problem with my home computer, I have WINDOWS XP installed and decided to REINSTALL windows last weekend and thus clear my computer of rubbish that builds upover time and in theory start from scratch!!  I successfully reinstalled windows to find that there is no sound what so ever coming from my PC!  There is also no speaker symbol in the bottom RIGHT of my screen!  Which you usualy expect to see!!  I thought fine i will locate my drivers DISC as im sure it will reinstall, only to find that the particular CD is missing!!!!  Any help guys and gals???  Would be very much appreciated, also to note that everything else apart from the sound e.g disc drive, seem to be working fine!!!  Please help!!!  Any guidance would be much appreciated!!!What model computer is it?  What you need to do is go to the manufacturer's website and download a sound driver.  Just go to their site, find the section for downloading drivers, select your model, and the type of driver you need.

If you need help, please let me know what model computer you have and I'll try to find the exact website for you.Go Start, and then click Control Panel. Click Performance and Maintenance, and then click System. On the Hardware TAB, click Device Manager.

Solve : Basic sound question?

Answer»

I just put in a new hard drive and installed xp on it and everything works fine except no sound.  Before I took the old drive out there was sound so I'm SURE SOMETHING basic was enabled in windows.

Is there some kind of way to get the sound back that is easy to CONFIGURE?  I don't need all the bells and whistles, but hearing an occaisional video newsfeed would be nice.

Thanks in advance for any advice. Most likely, you have sound card driver missing.
Go to Device Manager, and see, if you have any yellow exclamation/question marks there.
What Windows version? What computer maker, and model?Whenever you re-install an OS any existing Drivers are WIPED out ...substituted (sometimes) by Windows drivers...
Re-install your MBoard drivers found on the Driver CD that shipped with the machine...
If you can't find the CD ( happens every time ) post back and the HUNT will be on...

Solve : Installed new video card?

Answer»

My computer has a built in video card on the motherboard. When i boot the computer the monitor remains black. All pins and plugs look fine.

I am having trouble with the newly installed video card. I still can not get a display on my monitor. I have tried the monitor on another computer and it works just fine. I RECENTLY purchased a Radeon 256 video card and have properly instaled the card onto the mother board. When I boot the computer nothing shows up on the monitor.  How do I tell the computer to use the new video card while I boot my computer?

Did you happen to install the drivers before putting the graphics card in?

If not, that's probably why your computer doesn't recognize it.You have to disable your on-board video in Control Panel, first. Turn your computer off, put your new video card in. Turn your computer on.
Windows should recognize new hardware. Have your drivers CD ready. Quote from: hanku on November 10, 2007, 11:46:07 AM

I was unable to install the new drivers for the video card or disable the old drivers. My video card on the motherboard is bad.

What do I do now? What do you have listed in Device Manager, under Display Adapters? Any yellow exclamation/question mark there?when it comes to video cards, you don't NECESSARILY have to have your drivers downloaded first like other hardware setups.  just make sure you follow broni's advice in this thread.  I'm wondering why other causes of the problem have not been considered.  Don't the facts here indicate possible problems other than video, such as a power supply, hard drive, or motherboard failure?

digitalozz, do you see evidence, in your LED lights' FLICKERING, that your hard drive is running and your system is booting?  Can you open your case, then start your computer and verify that all fans are running?Maybe if we had the exact video card involved, and the computer or motherboard make and model, and the power supply make, wattage and age, we couldn't have to guess.

Were the old drivers REMOVED prior to installing the new card? Does the onboard video work if the new video card is removed?
