Solve : Printers: Some advice from anyone with a printer? |
Answer» Hi guys, I've got a lexmark X1185 multifunction centre, and have been terribly disappointed with it for a long time. It has chewed up ink so quickly, cartridges are so expensive, and quality is poor as anything. So I am looking to get a new one, and I am wondering a few things. What is a good printer (not MFC) that If you are looking for printing text for the most part, then I'd suggest getting a laser printer. You'll get thousands of prints as opposed to hundreds with an inkjet/bubblejet. It'll be for printing pictures as well. How do Laser printers hold up on that end of the deal? Quote from: soybean on November 16, 2007, 08:53:38 AM Here's a review on that printer: Thanks for the links, I've read the second before, but not the first. It seems to be getting fairly good in the reviews (I think) as opposed to the lexmark I've got at the moment. Are these good yields for cartridges? 290 pages of 6 x 4-inch photos - Magenta 4340 pages of 6 x 4-inch photos - Large "ContrastPLUS" Black 1600 pages of 6 x 4-inch photos - Standard Black 436 pages of 6 x 4-inch photos - Cyan 331 pages of 6 x 4-inch photos - Yellow Seems good to me, as opposed to my Lexmark, which is 8 full colour pages and then it's empty. And each cartridge in the Lexmark is $50 (there's a black and a colour), whereas the Canon is $25. Whaddya think? -StephenWhen you say "8 full colour pages", is that photos or what? That level of ink consumption seems UNBELIEVABLE. So, I presume you're talking about photos. I don't print photos on my printer. I get the digital prints I want from Wal-mart or some other retail photo development shop. I believe it's actually more economical. I have two older Canon printers, a BJC-2000, which uses one color cartridge and one black cartridge. The color cartridge for it costs about $20 plus tax at Wal-mart. The other printer, a BJC-3000, like the PIXMA iP5300, uses separate cartridges for the three colors and one black cartridge. I do think the separate color cartridges can save money just because each color may be consumed at different rates and can be replaced separately. Yeah, I agree, I think the separate cartridges is a good idea. And yes, they are full colour pages of either photo's or poster presentations for assignments etc. -Stephen |

Solve : ACCESSING BIOS MENUS? |
Answer» I was PLANNING to overclock my PC. I have a socket 939 MSI motherboard with an AwardPhoenix bios. Apparently many PC's that are bought pre-built lock out certain menus in the bios, in particular, the menu needed to improve processor speed. Is there any way to unlock these menus? Or is there something else I can do to improve my processor's speed. How familiar are you with O.C.ing a PC? There is more involved than simply ramping up your processor speed. If you're not up to speed with this, I would suggest that you do some serious research before making the attempt. Unless, of course, you like heavy doors stops and EXPENSIVE paper weights. I'm not being obnoxious, I just hate to see a perfectly good PC wind up in a SCRAP heap. Not that familiar really. My research only extends to browsing a few websites. All of them make it seem like a pretty simple process. However I except that there's probably more to it than what first meets the eye. Can you recommend a reliable source that can guide me through the process and explain a way to deal with the issue previously raised. Start Here... |

Solve : xfx GeForce 8500 GT 512 Mb? |
Answer» I RECENTLY had to replace my video card, but now after this one was installed, the graphics seemed worse than the former (256 mb 6800). I know this one must have better graphics, right? I recently had to replace my video cardQuote I had it taken to a computer shop to be taken care ofWhich one, then?had to replace the 6800 with 8500. had some dude do it at protech computers. The 6800 is superior to the 8500. Sorry, but you downgraded your video.Calum, is this a departure, then, from the general pattern of cards with higher-number model numbers being the LATER models and having faster graphics chips? Not necessarily. The first number denotes the series of the card, so the 8500 is two serieses (is that a word?) aove the 6800. The second and third numbers denote how powerful it is within that series. The 6800 was the top of the line from the 6 series, the 8500 is the second from bottom of the 8 series. Even though it's a newer card, and therefore supports newer technologies, it's actually slower. They keep changing though, so a card with second number 5 MAY be the middle card of one series, and in the next series the bottom. It's all marketing tricks. Hope that clears things up a little.Good explanation. Thanks.Nice info, Calum thats f*****g great, so I spend over 140 dollars to get something worse. what would I have to get to get something of equal graphics? a d**n 8800? thats b******t, I cant even afford the one I bought, let alone something like that. Im in debt now because of this f*****g video card. Im taking it BACK and demanding my money back. In fact I even told the *censored* that I wanted a better quality graphics card, so he lied to me. Wow that really sucks dude. But I must admit that numbering scheme fooled me as well. I would have thought the 8500 was faster simply because it was 2 series "newer" than the 6800. But after looking at benchmarks I can see Calum (of course) is right and the 8500 is actually quite a bit slower than the 6800. If you follow this link you can compare the two cards with a whole range of benchmarks.this is so depressing... well christmas is coming up soon, I can only hope for an 8600 gts or 8800 lol. plus I have a $50 check I cant cash cuz my account is overdrawn, so I suppose I should get a job =P. also, looking at that chart, it shows thats some 320 mb cards are faster than their 640 mb counterparts, as well as 256 and 512, why is this? it shows that their graphics are better yet their memory is less, does memory have nothing to do with graphics? if so, *censored* is does memory even do for a graphics card? the same thing RAM does? The memory on a graphics card is used to store the graphics data the GPU is going to process. The RAM on a graphics card is a lot faster than the system RAM the rest of the computer uses. So by storing the data in video ram the GPU has a lot faster access to it compared to if it had to get it from the system RAM. So the amount of RAM determines how much data the GPU has fast access to but has no INFLUENCE on how fast a GPU can process the data. So more memory doesn't necessarily equals a faster graphics card.so after hearing that, im assuming a larger amount of memory on a video card is more for things like 3d graphic design, but not optimized for use with games, right? |

Solve : PC will automatically turn on? |
Answer» Yesterday, my computer just fine then between 10 to 20 minutes somethings like "BOOM" inside my system unit. So everything went down. When I PRESSED the power button it won't turn ON anymore. So I suspected that the problem is the PSU. I REPLACED PSU using my Dad's PSU just to diagnose if it's the PSU is the culprit. So when I plugged it on my computer will automatically turn on. So what's going on with my computer? In regards to the first post: So what will I suppose to do sir?make sure the psu you have and install suitable to handle your current hardware, or it gonna blow again.Use a psu calc to calc your psu usage. http://www.extreme.outervision.com/psucalculatorlite.jspMy advice is to go into your BIOS settings, and search for something along the lines of "Auto Power On After Failure" or "Auto Boot After Power Failure" and turn that to off, as opposed to on. This should solve the automatic booting problem (if that's what the problem was from the start). Let me know if that helps. -StephenWhen i plug it to the outlet, the computer starts and also processor fan and PSU fan start spinning but no display on the monitor.are you using any graphic card?re-seat it and check for any loose cables. And also check that maybe you didn't have a power SURGE initially, which would've caused the monitor to blow as well (and would explain the PSU explosion). My videocard is built-in sir...I'll check the PSU and post back for the result.Try another monitor also in the meantime. Is it CRT of LCD? And is it DVI or VGA?Update: I tried other monitor but no avail. When I plug it on, the computer automatically start but no display. Just notice, the red led or the power button will only light. But the green led won't function anymore. What do you think is the problem?Justin... Have you tried checking for the ANSWER at the same post you made at GeeksToGo: Here ...or if that didn't work...why not check the thread at your own forum, located here. Why don't you guys view this member's profile and look at some of the questions he has posted? Are you guys blind? Solve : computer diagnosis? |
Answer» i have a broken computer im trying diagnosis whats wrong. More info- well i asked my cousin what he had done to the comp before he gave it to me and he said he booted and shut it down constantly 1. So... The computer was "broken" when you received it? (That is, you've never been able to successfully boot it into Windows?) 2. It is not a HD problem because... You ran the manufacturer's hard drive diagnostics to ensure the physical drive works? 3. It is not a Ram problem because... You ran a reputable memory test for twenty-four hours with no errors?1. During the boot process do you ever see: a. A progress bar displayed at the bottom of the screen. If so, at what point during the boot process? Before the "Windows Advanced Options Menu" display or after? b. The graphical Windows XP logo screen (as Windows operating system is loading). If so, at what point during the boot process? Before or after you make your selection on the Windows Advanced Options Menu to continue? 2. If your Ubuntu 7.10 live disk (CD?) boots and RUNS, then it sounds like you have a problem with the file system, system files, or device drivers used by Windows XP being loaded from your hard drive. 3. Sounds like you do not have: o Windows XP Setup CD o OEM Recovery CD (aka Restore CD) Do you know if the hard drive contains a "hidden" OEM Recovery Partition? 4. Remove Devices - first remove all non-essential peripheral devices (e.g. printers, scanners, USB devices, audio devices, etc.) so that only the display, keyboard and mouse are still connected. See if system boots. 5. If not, proceed with the Windows XP Recovery Console to see if you can repair your Windows XP installation. Download the appropriate Windows XP Setup Disks (six volume floppy set for Windows XP Home Edition SP2?) and create the floppy diskettes. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310994/en-us Boot into the recovery console from the set of floppys or a Windows XP Home SP2 Setup CD: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307654 a. Use the "chkdsk c: /r" command to verify the integrity of your file system where "C:" is the logical disk that contains your operating system: http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/r_c_cmds.htm#Chkdsk b. If system still does not boot (try Safe Mode first), you can return to recovery console to verify your boot files are present and correct (they are PROBABLY hidden, system, read only files): o Boot.ini o NTLDR o NTDetect.com c. If your boot files are present and correct (not corrupt), then attempt to enable boot logging and see if you can read boot log from recovery console "more C:\Windows\NTbtlog.txt" or "type C:\Windows\Ntbtlog.txt". Look for problems noted within the bootlog. Heres the breakdown HD test got another hardrive that i knew worked the os was linux it did not boot up hence i assumed that it might not be a hardrive problem not sure till i test the first hard drive but this means that there is something more than a hard drive problem Ram Test simple replaced the ram ram a test said it was error free Cpu test In progress the program said it was 1 week to test 1 thing 1. A and B no i do not see them it goes compaq then strait to the safemode options that dont work 2.im not sure if its a hardrive thing but ILL test the hardrive on my comp later too 3.im not sure if i have a recovery partition can you tell me how to get to this? 4.ill try that and get back 5.again ill try and get back to you LATEST UPDATE This is wired i WANTED to test out the new ubuntu 7.10 so using the live cd i installed it and it worked it booted all the way up |

Solve : PC runs but monitor goes to sleep mode when started - no picture? |
Answer» TRIED another PC and monitor does work so not a bad monitor. PC runs and drive operates when disc in but does not transfer picture or IMAGE to monitor. Also tried bad PC on a different monitor and it will not transmit a picture to that monitor either. Also, was freezing up often prior to this problem. PC: 2000 Compaq ME I'm not very computer literate so please speak in layman's terms. Quote Tried another PC and monitor does workDid you use same monitor cable, or monitor cable from second computer? You may need to update your video drivers. What model of that Compaq?PresarioModel NUMBER?7PL 7000Z Series LOOOOOOOL....it looks like Quote Did you use same monitor cable, or monitor cable from second computer?2 different MONITORS on 2 different towers. The Compaq tower does not turn on either monitor and each monitor had separate cables. but both monitors worked with the spare tower.Does Compaq have separate video card, or on-board video? If separate card, try to reseat it, try in second computer.did that and is still the same. it also is not hooked to internet - is used for kids computer games only since I got a new computer myself.Borrow a working vid card and swap it in there and see what happens... Quote did that and is still the sameExplain, please. Video card from first (bad) computer, doesn't work in good one?All I did was pull cards and put back in did not use vid card from another computer. not sure what vid card looks like but pulled every card and put back in same slot. The "good" computer is very very old maybe 10 YRS. or more. Look at the back of your computer. You'll see a port, where you connect your monitor. If inside your computer, there is a card connected to that monitor port, you DO have a video card. If there is no card, you have on-board video chip. What do you have?Your monito is overdued it is time to get a new one. sometimes monitor do behave like that when they are exhausted |

Solve : comp shuts off during install (XP disc)? |
Answer» Shynnie I built the computer a couple months ago. It worked fine (on the 30-day trial from the Dell XP CD-- my sister's), but as soon as I tried installing a copy of XP (for which I had a serial), the issue started. I don't doubt that it's a hardware issue, it just seems odd to me that the problem would start without ANY changes in hardware. Hi obviously I'm new but I was searching everywhere for an answer to this problem as I seem to be having a similar one I am installing a new to me (but used) hard drive in my laptop. Mine will start it gets past entering the product code and once it says the installation will complete in approximately 19 min it shuts off almost as if it went into standby mode but of course when i turned it back on it had to restart setup. Once I restarted it happened again at the same place.(about 4 times) Is it possible that mine is just a hard drive problem? Any suggestions?Yes. Start a new topic with as many details you can provide on your system, OS and where this drive CAME from and someone will be along shortly. This way it can recieve the proper attention...I swapped out the IDE cable and took out the two sound cards-- problem remains. Was about to consider buying a new mobo when I thought to myself, "why not try yet another cd drive?" And sure enough, I try it with a THIRD cd drive, and it works. Who knows, MAYBE both of the other two drives are screwy, maybe not, I think I'm going to just chuck them both out regardless. Thanks again for all the help. -AndrewI had the same problem, until I used a bootleg version and everything was perfect. Try another disc. The disk I was having problems with i've used on 5 other computers with no problem. try that and let us KNOW |

Solve : monitor shows strange pattern when pc is turned on? |
Answer» Hello all, i recently bought a new hp desktop computer, PRIOR to that by about 3 months i bought a viewsonic flatscreen monitor(the one that has usb ports and charging for ipod), they worked fine together for about a week or two. now EVERYTIME i turn the computer on for the day---the monitor shows patterns and not the windows. the patterns are either blue stripes, or orange and pink geometrical shapes, usually the patterns change every few seconds, never taking me to the windows. i have to turn the pc off and turn it back on, then i get windows, sometimes it asks me how i want to start the computer, and sometimes it doesn;t. i have tried turning the pc on first, or turning the monitor on first, neither gives good results. any help is APPRECIATED, thanks:)This sounds to me like the VIDEO card/chip is going bad...but it could also be the monitor. |

Solve : Viewing DVD movies? |
Answer» SEHello, everyone: VLC... If anyone reading along is interested, the link is: http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-windows.html Note that it says: Quote Windows 95/98/Me users: Please note that these versions of Windows are not officially supported. No VideoLAN developer uses any of these systems, which makes them hard to support. VLC should mostly work with them, but some incompatibilities might appear. You might need to download The Microsoft Layer for Unicode on Windows 95/98/Me Systems. The two MSLU files need to be put in the C:\Windows\System\ folder. and a link is provided for downloading it. Using Win98SE here. I have VLC installed, and have the MSLU files. VLC runs, and plays most - not all - video files. Some are unwatchable though. Very herky-jerky. I'm not big on video files, so I have never really explored it to see if it can be improved. I can't comment on DVDs. No DVD player here. This one is suppose to work with Win 98: http://downloads.zdnet.com/download.aspx?&kw=dvd+player&docid=304298You need at least DVD-Rom drive and a software capable of PLAYING DVD's. GOM player, VLC player, Windows Media Player, Windows Media Player Classic, Real Player, AVS Player... any of these freeware softwares can play dvd media fine. I prefer either windows media player or real player but you CHOOSE what software you like best. |

Answer» I have a gateway E series P$ computer running Windows XP Home Edition. I have two hard drives (C & E). What must I do when the computer boots to have it ask me which hard DRIVE do I want to boot up?Depends if you have an OPERATING system on both drives...EXACTLY, it depends on which of them has the Os on it. It's usually C from my experience. All other letters are used for slaves or extra cd/dvd drives and what not.I THINK it has something to do with the Boot.INI file on the "C" drive. Yes it does, but unless an OS is on the second drive, It'll be pointless. I don't know if, by adding another line into this file, for the second drive, it will show you the selection screen if it can't find an OS on the second...? Solve : "no plug in" on graphic with new motherboard? |
Answer» Hi, dont know about the graphic card, but its not new. I can plug two monitors in it though. Where did this card come from ? ? It very well may be dead. Have you tried it in another machine ? ? This will verify if it works or not... Quote from: Bimm3r on November 09, 2007, 05:01:51 PM I have this pc, and i changed the motherboard on it. But now the graphic card wont work! Neither will the intergrated graphic card on the motherboard. Quote from: Bimm3r on November 10, 2007, 04:12:18 AM I know that the integrated graphic card wouldnt work on the motherboard (or rather,, i suppose) cause i tried removing the agp graphic card. I changed the mobo cause the old mobo wouldnt turn on / went dead.Seems to me you may have mis-diagnosed your original problem and replaced the wrong component. Perhaps you really needed a new power supply, or perhaps you need both it and the new motherboard. Doesn't this seem logical, since you get no VIDEO signal, even from onboard video? In other words, you have no indication that the computer is even booting. So, you may have problems other than the motherboard. Was this motherboard replacement your first such undertaking? Did you use thermal gel when installing your CPU's heatsink? Quote Although the cooler is spinning on the graphic card. Its agp and its in the agp slotQuote my plug-and-play monitor says "no plug in".Did this computer get a video at all before you started with the graphics card or did you try? If you feel comfortable and you know where the CMOS jumpers are, you might "reset" with the agp card out. (in other words take out the AGP card and reset CMOS using the onboard jumpers. Then plug all and check monitor, power/cables, light on monitor (what color is it). Note: Make sure to uplug power to PSU and always put on your wrist strap-ESD (Electrical Static Discharge) while working inside the box. Your board has 1 agp and 3 pci slots..see steps in manual for CMOS (rtc) reset..Hope this helps (if cmos set itself to boot on AGP instead of onboard when you installed the card) reset will put it back to factory settings.. Neither will the intergrated graphic card on the motherboard. S***t Well, maybe it is the power supply. But the lcd on the case and on the motherboard is on. And the blazers are running. Yes it was my first choice to change the motherboard cause with the old motherboard the pc only wanted to turn on after 200 tries, so i thought it was somekind of defect thing on the motherboard. I did not use thermal gel...... i just thought it was not so necessary >_< cause i could see there still was a little from the old cpu. No smell of burn, etc.. I hope the cpu isnt screwed. Solve : Hard Drive - Disk Management Option - Dynamic / Offline? |
Answer» Dear All, This problem is Most hot topic in most of the forums. Any one with best suggestion is most appretiated. I have a system with Two Sata Disk Drives in it ( Samsung 40gb OS Installed - 80gb Samsung for data storage.) The Operating system is Win2000 and second drive is a Dynamic drive. Recently I have an instance to BACK my data on my both drives to other system as i want to use a VISTA system. I have removed both the drives and backed the first drive with OS 2000 in to my vista system by connecting the drive as slave to that system. But when i tried to connect the second hard drive which was a dynamic drive on my old system, COULD not able to be seen in the my computer. but the drive was been detected by the PC and in Disk Management Option of administrative tools, was seen as Dynamic / Forine drive. i removed that drive and connected back to my old system, EVEN this time it could not be seen in my computer and was detected and shown as dynamic / offline in Disk Management Option. More over I tried do all the option like Re activate the disk and Import the forine disk but was invain. I have left only with option that revert to basic disk. But was got some information from support.microsoft.com that by converting it back to basic disk will lost my data on the drive. This situation is worse for me as i have got my three years work on the drive. Any positive suggestion is most appreatiated. With Rgd Kartheek MHook it up as a slave drive and retrieve your data...i suggest purchasing a DVD burner for burning your backups as ALL hard drives eventually fail. The problem you are having is that with any Windows OS from Win2K on you cannot simply swap a hard drive from one machine to another and expect it to boot properly...it simply won't work and as MS said you risk losing all your data. This is by design. |

Answer» I seem to have a problem with my home computer, I have WINDOWS XP installed and decided to REINSTALL windows last weekend and thus clear my computer of rubbish that builds upover time and in theory start from scratch!! I successfully reinstalled windows to find that there is no sound what so ever coming from my PC! There is also no speaker symbol in the bottom RIGHT of my screen! Which you usualy expect to see!! I thought fine i will locate my drivers DISC as im sure it will reinstall, only to find that the particular CD is missing!!!! Any help guys and gals??? Would be very much appreciated, also to note that everything else apart from the sound e.g disc drive, seem to be working fine!!! Please help!!! Any guidance would be much appreciated!!!What model computer is it? What you need to do is go to the manufacturer's website and download a sound driver. Just go to their site, find the section for downloading drivers, select your model, and the type of driver you need. |

Solve : Installed new video card? |
Answer» My computer has a built in video card on the motherboard. When i boot the computer the monitor remains black. All pins and plugs look fine. Did you happen to install the drivers before putting the graphics card in? I was unable to install the new drivers for the video card or disable the old drivers. My video card on the motherboard is bad. What do I do now? What do you have listed in Device Manager, under Display Adapters? Any yellow exclamation/question mark there?when it comes to video cards, you don't NECESSARILY have to have your drivers downloaded first like other hardware setups. just make sure you follow broni's advice in this thread. I'm wondering why other causes of the problem have not been considered. Don't the facts here indicate possible problems other than video, such as a power supply, hard drive, or motherboard failure? digitalozz, do you see evidence, in your LED lights' FLICKERING, that your hard drive is running and your system is booting? Can you open your case, then start your computer and verify that all fans are running?Maybe if we had the exact video card involved, and the computer or motherboard make and model, and the power supply make, wattage and age, we couldn't have to guess. Were the old drivers REMOVED prior to installing the new card? Does the onboard video work if the new video card is removed? |
