Solve : Power Suppy + Vid Card issue?

Answer»

i have been running a geforce 8500 GT on my comp not knowing i did not meet the SYS requirements for the power supply,
Power supply reuirements say 400 watts but mine only has 250w. Is this harmful to my comp? should i be upgrading my PSU?The card itself wouldn't use 400 watts. You need to determine the entire watt demand of ALL your hardware, not just your video card, then pick a power supply appropriate to that.Wow, a PSU that can't even run an 8500 GT..

Just GET a no-name brand 400-500w PSU. It should be very cheap.thx guys ill be going to bestbuy this weekend to upgrade my PSUlike a dynex 400 w. selling on amazon for $6.95 + 6.95 S&H the last time I checked.

That would be enough.Yep ...
I agree.
Give advice on buying the cheapest PSU you can find since it's only one of the more important components in a well built machine.
Heck just buy 3 of them and daisy chain them in case one fails.

I sincerely hope no one reading this heeds this kind of advice.

You really bring the intellectual level of this forum down, Homer.
So, I suppose your name suits you.. not to mention the fact that it's not spelled with a cap LETTER at the beggining. God, what an idiot.

BTW, anyone who still wants to refute that I know more about Hardware than the lot of you put together, can still do so, gladly. Just REMEMBER, silly internet pictures do not count as an intelligent response to an argument. The fact you've repeatedly stated that cheap PSUs is the way to go pretty much proves that you don't know as much about hardware as you think you do. The PSU is the single most important PIECE of equipment in a computer. Why? Because computer hardware is sensitive electronic equipment that is reliant on a stable supply of power. Cheap PSUs are notorious for not delivering the promised wattage or generating voltage spikes. Both of which can lead to unstable operation and shorten the life of your hardware.

Solve : PC reboots when playing games?

Answer»

I built a NEW rig about a week or so ago:

Q6600 G0
Asus P5KC
2 GB OCZ 1066 DDR2-8500
8800GT 512MB
Sounblaster Audigy 4
2 x SATA HDD, 1 x IDE HDD, 1 x IDE DVD-RW
Antec Smartpower 500W PSU

Running XP SP2

I bought and have been playing Bioshock (through Steam) at high settings with no problems at all (more than 15 hours racked up in this game with extended 5 hour + gaming sessions no problem).

Bought NWN2: Mask of the Betrayer and COD4 as well a few days ago, and installed both earlier. However, when I try to play them my PC just reboots of its own accord. This happens at about 2-3 minutes into NWN2MOB, and with COD4 it always happens at the exact same point during the INTRODUCTORY sequence whilst the main game is loading.

Portal, and TF2 run okay as well as Bioshock. Given this pattern, I suspected a Securom problem, but I found it happens with Oblivion as well - again after about 2 minutes of game time as with NWN2. (I also tried a no-DVD crack for COD4 to see if that helped, but it didn't make any difference)

So... how do I diagnose and correct this ISSUE? Why does Bioshock (and my other Steam games) run so well for so long whilst a less taxing game like NWN2 causes a reboot so soon?

I am stumped. Usual suspects for me would be:
PSU - but it's a quality BRAND and Bioshock runs fine?
RAM - but Prime, Orthos and Memtest run okay (Prime for 10 hours blending, Memtest I've run for about 45 mins)
Gfx card - I've read about some problems with the 8800GTs, and have tried underclocking everything on the card (though my temps are fine on it anyway) and, again, Bioshock runs perfectly!

I've restored my BIOS to default settings, turned off RAM transaction booster, and other potentially destabilising settings, but still no joy.

I have no other PCI-E gfx cards to test with, nor a spare PSU.

What are my next moves? Help! Please!

EDIT: I have AUTOMATIC restarts disabled in system settings as well.

EDIT 2: Just re-downloaded HL2 Lost Coast to test, and it reboots on the video stress test as well... so it's not just non-Steam games.

Solve : Problems Loading XP Home Addition?

Answer»

I have a computer that was running XP Home addition and had a hard disk failure. It is a pentium 4 with 384MB of Ram. I have replaced the hard disk with an 80GB IDE hard disk. My problem is that it will not load XP Home Addition. It will go through the initial load and then fail to load some EXE and DLL files. It had just 256MB of RAM initially and I added 128MB more thinking it was a RAM Memory problem. I then loaded Windows 98 and then did the upgrade to XP Home. It loaded after a few qliches but still has many problems on running such as it will not read a DVD disk that I know is good. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
tetonkenYou formmatted the new HDD and installed a fresh installation of Windows on it?Have you re-installed your motherboard drivers ? ?
When you say it won't read dvd's what program are you using when this happens ? ?
Are you sure the RAM you added is correct for that machine ? ?I diid a new NTFS partition and tryed to load XP from scratch and it failed. So then I did a Fat32 partition and loaded WIN98 and did the upgrade. The DVD that it won't read is a backup of pictures and documents. The DVD has almost max capacity of data on it.
The Ram I added is DDR 333 same speed as the RAM in the machine and it seemed to recognize it with no problem. I put the RAM I added in the first slot and I got further with the XP load than I had with just the 256MB of RAM.The machine is about 4 years old and there was no disks for the mother board.
kenSome of this issues are caused by CD-ROM or DVD-ROM or any scratch on the disk that leads to led not to pick up some data on the disk.

Through experiance i had the same problem for a month tried different disks just then to figure it out it was rom read speed was too slow to pick up some DLL files..

Ok WHATS the speed on you Rom drive and how old is the disk you BOOTING from?
I am not sure of the speed of the DVD but I would think it is at least a 12X. The disk if fine, it is the backup of her pictures and Documents. The main problem is not getting a clean load on XP. I am fairly sure it isn't a motherboard problem and I think I have rulled out that it isn't a RAM problem. So now I'm really STUCK as to where to go next.

Solve : Help! Half My Screen Goes Black When I Hook Up Second Hard Drive!!!?

Answer»

Hey, I really hope someone can help me with this. I just bought a second SATA HDD. I hooked it up and installed my OS. Everything worked fine. Then I hooked up a my second HDD and the bottom half of my screen was black. I have narrowed the problem down to hooking up the power cable to the second hard drive. The second HDD had two different kinds of power cord hook-ups, I tried both and neither worked.
Please help me. Here's a list of stats if it will help.

Windows XP SP2
2.9 GHZ Processor
1 GHZ Ram
450 Watt PSU
256 Mb Video Card, Radeon X-1900 AIW
Primary HDD is 500GB Seagate
Secondary HDD is 160GB WDWild guess - it's the power suppply.

IF either drive works but both do not, then the issue MAY be power. There could be a controller/resource issue here. Are you trying to plug the drive in while the system is on? SATA can do this, but your system has to be configured to allow it.

You'll probably be wanting to carefully inspect this behaviour in the BIOS. Is the screen affected there too? If so, you know this isn't a windows problem...

Hope that gave you some ideasI have had problems with a few of the 80 and 160 gig WD SATA1.5& 3.Mb/s Drives.
I always had to use the Adapter to the molex power connection, bcs it wouls not boot on regular molex hooked straight to the L side power inlet. Also on a few I got thos click sounds that indicate your driver is almost THRU driving

http://support.wdc.com/warranty/index.asp

But Western Dig has the best return policy I have seen.
MAKE sure your drive is reg in the link above and send it to them for repair or replacement for free if its under 3 yrs old.
Doesnt matter who's name it's in either...

PS: This info will help you if your HDD is bad!

Here is a tech link describing your problem and maybe a solution.

Link EditThank-you very much for your help so far.

Here's some more info if this will help. When I boot up the computer the screen is full, but as soon as windows begins to log on the screen goes half black. On my second drive, the WD one, there is two different power ports. I have tried both, and neither work.

The whole reason I had bought the new Seagate drive was because I was having some problems with the WD drive, but this problem really doesn't seem related. It seems to be solely a power issue because the problem happens even without the SATA cable hooked up to the WD drive.
One more question btw. Would it be worth trying the power from by disc drives as I know these work without problems? If you replace the PSU let know..bcs IM thinking I need to go to a 600W+. So I can hook my second drive back up (the PSU I have now is a 420W) Had the same problm. That may be why I had to replace mine and the molex power on the L side still doesnt work.
If I understand your question do you mean reload the WinXP OS? to one of the drivesIf it were a problem with PSU wouldn't my boot screens show as half black as well? The screen doesn't go half black until windows log on screen starts to load.litespeed, To my above question concerning trying power from my disc drives. What I meant was unplug the power to my cd drive and plug into my second HDD. I assume the problem would persist but havent tried it yet.Im not sure you have a hardware problm just yet, I have had this problem before building a computer with a 160gb seagate baracuda and WD 160 gb also, let me find my notes and see what I done, maybe someone else will come along shortly. Until then Ill look this up for you cause I didnt have the monitor problm. just the same on with the WD HDDI dont think that would help the WD HDD! Altho u can try it real quick to be sure, elimination is part of the troubleshooting
Okay let me see if I got this right: Your Primary Master HDD is the WD drive?
Also when you said you had the SATA cable unplugged did you mean the power & did you leave the data cable plugged in on the WD Drive? Because I believe you have an issue with the WD HDD and a problem with video settingsor software. My primary drive is Seagate 500 GB, Secondary drive is 160 GB WD Drive. If I leave the data cable unplugged, the problem still happens. All I have to do is plug power into the WD Drive and half the screen goes black. I havent tried to plug it in while the computer is turned on though, is this safe to do?Okay do you have your jumpers set right on both drives Seagate PriMaster and the WD PriSlave, also in CMOS they need to be set on AUTO under Pri Mast& Pri Slave. Any other that ur not using turn to NONE..Chk your boot structure also. 1=disk#, 2=cdrom, 3=floppy or whatevr...I wouldnt hook up the HDD to your system while its running right now. Even tho the HDD is prob Hot Swapable..let me know what happens
If you can, try swapping out the x1900 for a cheap card and see if the problem persists. After all, this is a video problem.

Also, unplugging the other hardware you know works but is not necessary for operation (optical drives, peripherals without plugs, any thing but your two HDs) you can diagnose if you suddenly get the picture then.

Is this an LCD monitor? If you have a CRT available, does that have the same result?

This still sounds LIKE a power problem to me...

litespeed14

If they are both SATA there aren't jumpers, masters or slave drives...but BIOS could easily be the solution here.

By the way, are both these drives recognized in Windows?

Solve : Difference between q6600 bulk and q6600??

Answer»

Hi guys!

So, whats the difference between q6600 bulk and "normal" q6600?

The only difference i see is that bulk has 8 mb cache, "normal" has 2 x 4 mb cache (Same thing? )

, and the bulk is 5€ more expensive -.-

Thanx, FilluXi was under the ASSUMPTION that the q6600 only comes in one make, and that is the q6600. where did you stumble UPON this "normal" q6600 and "bulk" q6600?Alright, I'll EXPLAIN..

Bulk = OEM = No cooler, No BOX.
Retail = Box, Cooler, etc.

You still get the warranty and what counts, and you don't pay 20$ for a box (in the case of another product).

Just make SURE it's the G0 stepping, not the B3
Allright thanx guys!i suppose with all the people, including me, that buy aftermarket CPU cooling solutions, it would be cheaper for us not to buy the cooler that we wouldnt use anyway.

Solve : Strange monitor/sound problem?

Answer»

Hi all, today for the first time while playing a video game, my monitor as well as my sound went dead (my computer itself stayed on). To fix it i just restarted my comp, but this problem occurred twice more afterwards (the latest time, while not playing the video game, just browsing the net). I checked the power connections to EVERYTHING to see if that may have caused the problem after the first incident but apparently it was not. Anyone know what could be going on here, or how to fix it?

Anyway feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Solve : Big Mouse and Keyboard Problem?

Answer»

Lets start out with the operating systems I have and then hardware I have
         -Windows XP Media 2003

          -Windows Vista Home Premium

Hardware

-Micro (its the company name) Cordless Mouse- Works just fine on both my computers. Came with a cordless keyboard and a hub (the thing that receives the commands and signals) Currently connected to a USB port and keyboard is not in use. nor is it connected. (Keyboard doesn't work by the way)

-LOGITECH Cordless Mouse and track ball mouse- both will NOT work and both use the green mouse port

-Logitech Keyboard- Only works on my Windows XP Media computer. Like the Logitech Cordless Mouse, it is cordless and sends and recieves signals from the hub.

-Normal Corded Keyboard- Works on both computers. Chance of working is 50%

A minor PROBLEM I have is that the purple keyboard port (on both computers) sometimes fails to detect any keyboard there at all.

A MAJOR problem I'm having is that the green mouse port, on both computers, ALWAYS fails to detect any mouse. It woks fine with the micro mouse I have, because it connects to a USB port, I GUESS. Thing is, I only have ONE and can't seem to find any mouses that use the USB port, and I won't be able to afford one in the next couple of weeks.

This problem started when I connected the Micro Cordless Mouse to both computers, through USB port only. Ever since then the green mouse port hasn't WORKED and detected anything.

Things I've tried
-Going to device manager and uninstalling every mouse device in safe mode, then rebooting.

-Installing the logitech cordless mouse through installation CD several times.

Additional Information
I have the installation CD for the logitech cordless mouse and keyboard
I DON'T have the installation CD for the Micro Cordless Mouse and Keyboard

Thanks greatly in advance for any help.

Solve : not recognizing cd drives?

Answer»

I just installed a new asus motherboard and windows xp. I know very little about computers, so I need help. Everything is working fine except I can no longer put a cd in the drives and get it to work. The drives themselves work but nothing happens on the computer. The drives are from my e-machines computer. It has been several years and I APOLOGIZE but I do not know what kind they are (2). I cannot install any thing from a disk on my computer to include my anti-virus software. Please if anyone can take the time to help me I will really appreciate it.
Thank you Evan
did you install the new Asus mobo & XP into the old emachine case?No I bought a new case because the motherboard would not fit in the old case.1. Anti-Virus / Anti-Malware Software. If you're using the computer on the internet, don't wait on your CD to get anti-virus/anti-malware software installed. If you have a broadband/Hi-Speed Internet connection, there are plenty of acceptable "free" anti-virus/anti-malware software programs available for download. Most of them are "free" for personal non-commercial use at home.

1. What works?
     a. Do the drive drawers work (go in/out)?
     b. Does Windows XP assign drive "letters" to the CD drive(s)? What are they?
     c. Can you browse the contents of the CD disk?

2. What doesn't work?

3. Does your BIOS recognize the CD drives? Enter CMOS setup and look to see if your CD drive(s) are recognized by the BIOS.

4. What type of interface connects the CD drives to the computer (IDE / SCSI / USB)? Enter CMOS setup and look to see what their interface is.

5. If they use an IDE channel, make sure the Master/Slave jumper on back of drive is set correctly.

6. If they are SCSI make sure the SCSI bus is terminated at each end.

Thank you for taking your time to help me with my problem. I was able to finally get the drives to work. there were three programs which I did not download that were interfering with the drives and windows. After I deleted those programs they worked just fine. Again many thanks to those who TRIED to help me I really appreciate it. ep76dahlarbear < give he/she the credit on this one + the other person..seems like they gave you ideas.....and YOU figured it out*

Solve : Upgrade video card?

Answer»

I recently bought a HP (Hewlett-Packard) Pavilion Media Center TV M8200n Desktop
(3GHz Athlon 64 X2 6000+, 3GB DDR2, 500GB, DVD±RW DL, Windows Vista Home Premium - MPN: GN551AA)

It comes with an integrated NVIDIA GeForce 6150 SE. I want to change this to a new dedicated video card. There is a PCI-Express x16 Expansion slot, so my QUESTION is this. Is it as simple as uninstalling the integrated GPU's drivers, then installing a new video card like normal, including a new power supply if NEEDED (most likely) or, because it has an integrated card in it, will it be more complicated? Is there something I should know?

This computer is for my WIFE, who loves gaming so any help would be greatly appreciated.Yep that's all it would require.
On first boot Windows will use generic drivers until you install the new ones.

Use a small screwdriver to take the key off and clean it. Turn off the laptop first!

Please verify that the keys come off your laptop before attempting to PRY them off. Some laptops don't have REMOVABLE keys and pulling at one may crack it.

Should it be necessary to remove the keyboard to clean it (as most keyboards will come out of laptops so they can be replaced) please use extreme care or contact a professional. Replacing anything on a laptop isn't cheap.Very wise advice...

Solve : computer stop responding?

Answer»

i have used windows xp operating system in my computer when i start the computer its booting normally , all the ICONS and the program load sussecfully, after some times its generates beeps sounds suddenly its stop responding and my computer is hang up,
please tell me what is the problem
its hardware or software problem I think software. You can check:

BOOT computer
After options pass, but before windows starts loading, hold the F8 key (ctrl could work)
Select Safe Mode
If windows loads, go to start>RUN>msconfig>startup

There you can check what loads with windows. Maybe there is a problem there. If you don't know what to disable, you can also try disabling all the entries, and then try enabling them until you find the startup entry which prevents booting.

If Safe Mode does not load, there is probably a registry problem which is very complex to resolve.

You'll also want to make sure your computer does not have any adware/malware/spyware which often causes such startup problems. You can download free removers like spybot S&D for that.More info on your system and what antivirus & malware scanners do you have? Also what type of sound was that? try counting the beeps if you can?

This is NOT good advice especially for a person with limited computer experience and a language barrier. This could well cause the computer to not boot at all.

If a computer is giving BIOS beeps, it is not a software problem as that happens before ANY software loads.

Please people, if you don't know, don't just guess. Sometimes it is better to not press the post button.

Whether it's good advice for a given level of expertise is debatable, but there is no such thing as a startup OPTION which can be disabled and thus prevent Windows from loading. Startup options are not system related, they are entries inserted by third party software. My advice is valid.

And the beeps, well, many programs, Windows included utilise the PC speaker well after loading, as in this case a supposedly normal boot ends with beeps, thus I don't think we can denifitely say this is hardware related. WITHOUT more information from the poster, we'll never know. Sorry but i agree with GX1_Man on this...disabling items in msconfig will indeed if done improperly render a machine un-bootable.

Today we have in our hands the latest Intel Core 2 Extreme quad-core processor, and I know what you are thinking but no, this is not yet another extremely expensive processor featuring the same four cores with only a speed bump over the last QX6850 we looked at last time. HMM, ok so I told a bit of a white lie there, as this is still an extremely expensive processor, but it’s not just another in a chain of speed bumps. The new Core 2 Extreme QX9650 represents Intel’s new flagship processor technology which until now was mainly known by its code-name “Penryn”, manufactured on a 45nm design process, adding fifty new SSE4 instructions, among other things.

Now, the actual QX9650 processor and other Penryn quad-cores have received its own codename which is “Yorkfield” and because this particular processor belongs to the Extreme line up, its complete name is Yorkfield XE. Similarly, future dual-core CPUs based on Penryn will go by the code-name “Wolfdale” once they are released. To complete the equation you should know that Yorkfields are really two Wolfdale chips STUCK together. This is the same as with previous Kentsfield quad-core processors which in reality were just two Conroe chips stuck together in one package. This may be a bit confusing but when time to buy comes, it's important being able to identify each different core version and know what advantages one generation of chips has over another, ultimately making the better buying decision.

Intel "Penryn" processors incorporate 410 million transistors for each dual core chip,
and 820 million for each quad core chip. The ORIGINAL Intel Pentium Processor only
has 3.1 million transistors.

The Core 2 Extreme QX9650 is the first of many products to be released using the Penryn architecture. LIKE the previous Core 2 Extreme QX6850, the QX9650 also works at 3.0GHz but adds a number of enhancements. Perhaps the most prominent, Intel's 45nm High-k metal gate silicon technology, which is claimed to be an industry's first, featuring transistors with reduced current leakage designed to decrease power consumption while also accommodating for increased clock speeds. This is a big deal considering Intel has used the conventional silicon-oxide technique since 1960.

Besides the apparent die shrink, the Penryn architecture features a faster Radix-16 divider, faster OS primitive support, improved store forwarding, split load cache enhancements, enhanced virtualization technology and enhanced dynamic acceleration technology. While all of these may sound nice in paper, in
real-life terms what we do know is that this newer Core 2 architecture is faster and more efficient. We were able to observe power consumption levels that are significantly lower as well as operating temperatures. These are all aspects that we will uncover in this review, but for now let me just say that when heavily overclocked the QX9650, it produced stress temperatures that were comparable to a dual-core Conroe processor operating at its default frequency.

When we move on to benchmarking the QX9650, it will extremely easy to SPOT the differences and advantages Penryn offers today because the QX9650 and the QX6850 (65nm Kentsfield) both operate at 3.0GHz and use the same front side bus speeds, so we will be putting them head to head for comparison. Also to note, the QX9650 does receive a L2 cache boost at 12MB versus only 8MB found in the QX6850.

Solve : Use powered/amplified speaker for TV?

Answer»

My mother is hard of hearing, and I want to set up an amplified TV sound speaker next to her recliner. The speaker should have it's own volume control, because cable CHANNEL volume levels vary so widely. I have this unused altec lansing powered/amplified speaker system made for connection to a computer sound card (lime green 3.5mm plug). Her 7 year old Toshiba TV has the normal red(left) and WHITE(right) RCA AUDIO out CONNECTIONS. No luck. Very feeble, distorted sound! There is obviously a serious impedance/level MISMATCH. I can run the sound through her hifi amp and plug the lime green plug into the hifi amp's earphone output. But it seems a waste to run the hifi amp all the time. Surely, I am not alone with this problem. Has anyone seen an ready-made adapter or op amp circuit that will accomplish this?

Solve : Help -unplugged Dell HD and now it says I have no HD at all!?

Answer»

Ok -please computer Gurus -help me out here.

I have a DELL Optiplex.

I unplugged the hard drive & cd-rom (& FLOPPY)

I was going to use them elsewhere -but then changed my mind.

I replugged everything back the way it was (its sort of dummy-proof.)

Now when I turn it on I get message that there is no hard drive installed.

I wanted to reformat it -PUT the winXP disk in the cd-rom and turned it on -I can get it to boot to the cd-rom, but after loading those INITIAL files, it says it can't continue (because it thinks I don't have a hard drive.)

Aside from calling Dell support -what can I do to make this hard drive "re-appear"?

Any help would be GREATLY ppreciated and please, I am not a computer dummy but BY NO MEANS am I anywhere near a computer guru so please speak to me as if I'm a computer idiot -I won't be offended.

Thanks a lot - in advance!
BassqueenFirst thing, remove and reconnect all cables to the drives, be it power or data. Check all the connector pins and make sure on isn't bent or something. Then reconnect all the cables making sure each one of plugging in properly.Tried that -all connectors/pins look fine.

Still no luck -any other suggestions?

Solve : Power Management Event Option?

Answer»

I recently purchased a Fusion5 PCI-E HDTV card and in order for the auto timer to work the instructions WANT to know if my motherboard supports the PME OPTION
I have a Dell Dimension E521 and all I can find out as far as the motherboard is concerned is it is a HK980/CT103, but no idea who makes it so I can get a manual and Dell has been no HELP and I find NOTHING in the computer on line manual to solve this problem.
I am just a novice, but hope someone can ANSWER this question for me. I have a feeling it does and if it does do I have to change any bios settings as opposed to rewire, per the instructions, if it does not or just plug it in load the current available driver and everthing should work if it supoorts PME?
Any help in this manner would be greatly appreciated. If you like you can e-mail me at [email removed to prevent spam]

Solve : Upgrading computer - need advice.?

The current items I have (already purchased) are:

Processor: Intel Core2Quad 755 - $311
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-X38-DQ6 LGA 775 ATX - $280
Power: ABS Tagan BZ 700W LED Power Supply - $170
Graphics: PNY GeForce 8600GT 512MB - $150
Memory: GSkill 8GB Memory (2GBx4) - $280

In total, it's a $1191 upgrade.

I'd like to know if these items will be a good setup, how long would it take to replace all of this from a current PC, and what else I should get (everything else is retail from the current pc).The 8Gb of RAM is a waste unless you're going 64 bit.
Even then it is a waste for most applications.
The 8600GT is not the best choice right now, I would have recommended an 8800GT instead.
Other than that, it's not a bad setup- what do you currently have?I am going 64bit and it was a discount deal :S lol

Currently my pc sucks..

4 GB memory
Pentium 4 processor 2.9 GHz
Asus Goldfish3 motherboard (DOESN'T EVEN HAVE PCI EXPRESS)
no idea power sourceWhich specific CPU are we discussing here ? ?None? Please refer to questions in my post. That's what I'm discussing.

Alright, I'm assuming we're talking about the Q6600. If so, excellent choice.

Now, in regards to the motherboard and the graphics card..
This motherboard support Crossfire, and yet you want to buy a graphics card that supports SLi.
And why do you need a 700w power supply for a wimpy little 8600 GT that needs no more than 400w?
And why buy the 8600 GT? It can barely play new games on high.

And then we have the RAM.. What are you doing that you need more than 2GB of RAM? It better be good. Quote from: Jess607 on November 21, 2007, 03:07:28 PM

YES that's the cpu, i wasn't really intrigued about graphics cards as i'm not a gamer, i just wanted one to handle intermediate gaming from time to time (maybe about 2 days a month), i bought the motherboard with intentions on a GOOD motherboard i won't have problems with that supports my quad

You need to open about 500,000 notepads to even get to 4GB. If you want to waste money, get a better graphics card or two CPUs.why you get 8 gb just because your motherboard can handle all that? most things even in 64 bit should not require 8 gb of memory! you could have gotten a 8800 GTS instead of a 8600 and you could have got yourself a new LCD monitor and some nice speakers with it.i agree with jess607. dont waste money on 8gb, instead, get a better graphics card. you really dont even need 4gb, i have 2gb with an 8800 ultra, and while playing CoD4, my RAM usage doesnt go past 80%. Solve : crappy cpu performance : (?

Answer»

well, a couple of months ago i built a computer buying the parts from newegg.com

i have been really happy with the computer and thought all was well until i ran a 3Dmark test on my system.

basically the graphics card tested 16-19 fps which is fine, and then it tested the cpu performance and it crawled sooo slowly and only got 0.5 fps

this is not right, i just paid $150 for my processor.

can anybody tell me if i'm doing something wrong? here is my system:

cpu: AMD Athlon 64 X2 DUAL Core Processor 5200+ 2612 MHz
mem: 2032 MB
OS: xp service pack 2
motherboard: asus m2n32-sli deluxe acpi bios revision 0903
video: nvidia GeForce 7900 GS 512MB

anyway, the only thing i can think of is that the cpu and motherboard aren't talking like they should be, but i'm not sure why that would be

ps i don't think that the temp is hurting anything, my cpu temps range from 55-70 c

anyway, any help would be great, i have no clue what to do.Well, one main thing is processors shouldn't get above 60 degrees, and yours gets to around 70 - check to make sure that all your thermal paste is applied properly and that the fan is running correctly. If not, consider getting third party thermal paste and larger or more effective fans. $150 isn't that much for a processor either, and that could be another problem point. I would expect to pay at least 200, up to 350 for a decent processor. In terms of processor performance, having a 1MB L2 Cache won't help performance, but it shouldn't hinder it too much, however the 1ghz FSB is a plus point. Without knowing exactly what you've done with your system, it's hard to say (i.e. what other programs are running etc.), but try lowering that temperature and let me know if that helps.

That's pretty much normal I think.
CPUs aren't really designed for 3D work, most CPUs will get extremely low FPS scores on the 3DMark benchmarks.
Compare your overall score with other, SIMILARLY specc'd, computers, and see how yours measures up.
If your PC isn't slow overall I don't think there's anything to worry about.
70C isn't too bad for that CPU either, as long as that's load temperature (e.g. after a benchmark).
phoenix, what kind of CPUs are you buying for $300?
The price has nothing to do with the performance at all, and very good CPUs are available in the sub-$200 range.Benchmark scores are just that...more useful for vid cards than processors...
Just curious after your CPU test finishes what is the top rated CPU on their list ? ?
And where is yours in relation ? ? Quote from: Calum on November 14, 2007, 12:37:24 PM

Good point about the CPU's not being designed for 3D work, I read the post incorrectly - I read it as not that he was testing the CPU for graphics, but rather that after he tested his graphics card for graphics, his entire system slowed down, including his frame rate which slowed to 0.5. Oops!

And I suppose the CPU's I'd be buying for that price weren't exactly mid range.. They were more of the higher end CPU's shall we say. It just slipped my mind that there were still cheaper ones available.

-Stephenthank you all for your comments, i'm beginning to wonder now even more about if there is a problem or not?

when i did the benchmark test they rated my computer very low overall like in the 25% range saying that 75% of all computers tested better than mine.

i find this very strange as i thought i was buying above average components and all

i definitely know my computer isn't even CLOSE to top of the line i was surprised that's all.

i really don't think that the temps have much to do with it as at 67 c that is at peak performance.

hmmmmmmm.....Remember that most of the people running the 3DMark tests are serious gamers who want the best from their systems.
So, the tests aren't representative of the entire market, just a small section, mainly high end PCs.
Your PC is about mid end, but in the section I'm talking about it's low end.
I hope this makes some kind of sense.
It's still a good PC, and I don't think there are any problems.
How many 3DMarks do you get? Compare your result to similar systems.

Solve : processor problem or psu??

Answer»

so i picked up a bunch of new stuff recently and I'm having some problems:

Intel dual core quad q6600.

680w Apevia iceberg psu.

When everything is connected (i removed the video cards and even the ram) and I attempt to power up the system the lights all go on for about 2 seconds then turn off.

When I remove the 8 pin power connectors (12v) the system powers up fine. When I remove the cpu the system powers up fine, but when the cpu is on the motherboard and the power supply is connected to it through the 8 pin connector the system boots up for about 2 seconds and then restarts... Any idea how to fix it or whether either the CPU or PSU is defective?

PLEASE HELP! I want to get this killer system going... and 680w should definately be more than enough!also... i have an older 480w psu i WOULD like to check against the system but unfortunately it only has a 4 pin cpu power connector instead of 8 :? Quote from: mr. muggles on November 20, 2007, 09:19:32 PM

also... i have an older 480w psu i would like to check against the system but unfortunately it only has a 4 pin cpu power connector instead of 8 :?

that shouldnt be an issue. my p5n32e mobo has the option for an 8 pin CPU power connector, but i only have a 4 pin connected to it. try switching the PSU's.alright... well when i CONNECT only the 4 pin with the 460w psu the system turns on and stays on... but none of the fans seem to be going and the system beeps continuously...

so... is there something wrong with the new 680w supply then?from what your telling me, it does indeed sound like the power supply is the problem. does the 680w PS come with a voltage selector switch on the back?Don't leave it on very long with no fans...
Double check your Did you remember to apply Thermal Paste when assembling the CPU/heatsink ? ?both psu's have voltage selector switches... I DID apply thermal paste, but atm, as i am just testing the PSU's... the fan is not on the CPU... though it is plugged in so the system THINKS there is a fan present. I'm not leaving the system on long enough to damage anything ..

both psu's are set at 115i would return the PS. some good brands in PS's are Corsair, OCZ, coolermaster, and antec.it was purchased from newegg... but I really don't want to have to wait for the shipping back, the RMA, and the shipping of the new one back to me (not that I have much of a choice huh?)

Plus... will newegg force a restocking fee on me (in addition to the shipping fee that I paid originally, the new shipping fee for the new PSU, and the shipping fee to return the defective psu)what are all of your hardware specs? you might be able to get away with using the 480W PS for now. i would actually suggest switching to the 480W and running the comp solely on it, to make sure that its the other PS thats causing the grief.well like i said with the 480 supply in the fans in the computer don't seem to work... that and the Computer seems to beem loudly and consistenly...saying "not enough power" imo.

Specs...

Asus striker extreme mobo
intel dual core quad q6600
2x evga geforce 8800GT's KO edition (not hooked up when i tried powering up the system)
4 gig ddr2 ram 1066
soundblaster sound card
Apevia 680w PSU iceberg
2x hard drives (1 ide 1 sata)i would return the PSU regardless if it is the problem or not, with 2 8800s i would recommend nothing less then an 800W PS.

now when you said the fans in the comp didnt work with the 480W PS, did you mean the case fans? also, are your fans connected directly to the PS, or are they connected to the mobo?oddly enough... it's powering up fine now... everything connected and all :X /boggle.

anyhow... mm... now it won't load all the way to windows... is this because of the new mobo? I tried tossing my vista disk in to maybe reinstall it... but it is an upgrade dvd... and so it wants me to load it from windows (great eh?).

I tried running in safe mode... regardless it does a BSOD flash and then restarts RIGHT after the black windows loading screen... do i need to reinstall windows? should i install XP? if so how? otherwise... what is causing the restarts? Should I load it, to begin with, with only 1 video card in?

Thanks. If this XP hard drive is from your old build it simply won't work...
XP is tied to the hardware it was installed on.
If you have an XP CD follow the instructions below:

Repair Install of XP

I suggest reading through it to get familiar paying special attention to the Warnings and printing out a copy for reference.

If done properly all your Data and Programs will be intact. If not you risk the loss of Data but the install of XP will run on the new build.

Good Luck.

So ive tried many different mice now, ive been into safe mode and no mouse works then either. Ive also reinstalled the software and done countless other things. I just cannot work out what the problem is.
If anyone has any possible solutions please let me know.

I assume, it's USB mouse, right?
Did you try different USB ports?
What Windows version?Ensure USB support is enabled in the BIOS.

The following Nirsoft utility, USBDeview, is handy in determining your past/present USB configuration as is the standard Microsoft utility, Device Manager.

After you answer the questions from "Broni", I have at least one for you.

Do any other USB devices work on your machine?hi - yep its a microsoft usb intellimouse. all the other usb peripherals are working fine. doesn't matter which usb port i use, never works. I read something about just leaving it turned off without any POWER supply for 30 mins and it seemed to do the trick..its now back to HAUNT me and even taking away the power supply for a whole day isnt working. Ive had the computer almost a year without fault. I BUILT it myself and the os is win xp with all the latest service packs and updates. All my drivers have been UPDATED and there are no conflicts within devices. Its been 2 days since i was last able to use my mouse. Any more information would be very appreciated
chrisits also doing something a little odd now...when i boot up, the mouse light on the bottom lights up as if its going to work...then halfway through booting up it just goes blank and by the time windows is loaded, it doesnt work....
very strange...
this is driving me crazy
Travel to the store and buy a PS2 mouse....grab a PS2 keyboard while you're at it.
Everyone should have one of each...Try going into BIOS and make sure "USB Legasy Device" is enabled.

Solve : parallel printer port - usb booboo... aargh!?

Answer»

Hi; I've just reconnected my kyocera fs3800 laser printer with a usb to parallel cable, forgetting that it was still turned on. I know that this is a VERY BAD thing to do (to paraphrase the manual); there's no communication between my xp PC which SAYS "printer ready" and "failed to print", and the printer which will happily print a self-test page, and says "printer ready" on its display. I've tried printing from various programmes with the same result; therefore I've either FRIED the cable or, more likely, something inside the printer. Do printers have anything like a fuse protecting the ports?

I expect the most economic thing is to buy another printer, which is fairly cheap,(reconditioned) but I don't like chucking things if they can be easily fixed. I might have known this was going to HAPPEN as I'd just bought two new toner kits for it, each costing more than the reconditioned printer !

thanks.I would actually try another printer on your computer hooked up in the same fashion to see if the MBoard is damaged...keep your fingers crossed that it's only the printer.Sometimes doing things a little bit bassackwards works. Shut down the computer. DISCONNECT the printer cable. Disconnect the printer power. Reboot the computer and shut down again. Reconnect the cables in reverse order (power first). Reboot the computer, then turn on printer power. In control panel/printers there are a couple of other options you might be interested in trying. You can redirect printing to a different port or to a file or you can capture the printer port and send it elswhere. If any of the METHODS work, it is less expensive to do a few mouse clicks than to buy a new printer.thanks Patio; I've tried another printer in the usb port and that (& other usb devices)works fine, so I guess I'm all right at the computer end; I'll try 2K's suggestion later. Phewwww !

Good news indeed. Ho ho ho-kay!

Yeah, did all the rebooting etc , played around with ports, we have lift off!

Many thanks.Hope you realise how lucky you got...

Absolutely! In future my cabinetmaking mode will not be switched off when I leave the workshop ("measure twice, cut once".... though come to think of it, do I still actually do that? Hmmm).

Solve : installing an AM2 cpu on an A13G+ motherboard help?

Answer»

I did a search and found nothing but I'm not sure how to word my questions.

I have a pcchips motherboard A13G+ version 3.0. It has an AM2 socket. I put an
AMD Athlon 64 3500+ cpu in it. It seems as though I have no power to the cpu. My question is do I need to plug in power to the PWR2 plug? It says it is a +12v for CPU Vcore power. If not do I need to plug in the extra four pin plug to the rest of the PWR1 connector? I have checked the cmos jumper and it is ok.Both actually if I'm not mistaken.
If your PSU only have a 20 pin main connector you need to plug in an extra 4 pin connector and the PWR2 plug also need a 4 pin connector.Yahooooo. that was it. I just tried it and you were right. I am now at the bios settings. This is my first computer build. Thank you for your fast reply and steely eyed computer savy. . The manual that came with the motherboard nor the more detailed one on a cd rom made any mention of either plug being needed. I'm 70% done installing XP on an AMD 64 3500+, 1GB memory(so far), nvidia MCP61 chipset, 360GB western digital HD, memorex LIGHT scribe dual layer DVD burner. The AG13+ mother board can handle 16GB memory supposedly(only tested to 4GB), I'll probably never get past 2GB ram. The motherboard has a PCI express x1 slot, a PCI express Pro slot for GRAPHICS interface, 2 serial ATA connectors, an Azalia CNR slot(what the heck is that for?) and more. My old AMD 1.4GHZ has served me well and is getting on eight years old. About a year and a half ago it was rebooting after about every half hour. I had four capacitors around the CPU that had leaked and were poof open on the top. I was able to get four caps from the local electronics shop and replace them and it has been fine ever since. That after I spent two months TROUBLE shooting software and I\O. LOL.

Solve : removed dvd rom, put in cd, not detected?

Answer»

laptop satellite 1800 series.the tape under DVD-cd ROM tore in half. i picked up a compatible CD ROM and installed it. the power LIGHTS light up, but wen i hit "my puter" it is not there. i have installed ( and REMOVED) many different drivers, and still it is not detected.am running off windows xp,

if it will work can i just swap the tape form the CD ROM to the DVD ROM? otherwise, how can we make the new ( second hand) CD ROM work? i must format and reinstall windows cause the puter is too slow, thank you very much for your help,
crashbBy "tape" do you mean the data cable that connects the drive to the motherboard? If that is what you mean then you'll need to replace it.

Alan <>< can i replace it with the one on the cd rom? otherwise im getting that it is impossible to find just that, and toshiba wants 300$ for the cd-dvd-rom? thanksCheck here:

Solve : video card needed for 26 pin video port - help?

Answer»

I have a Dell Dimension xps t600r. born 1999. 660 mhz penti 3 processor.
12g hard drive ( 6 left). she has a VIP II 26 pin video port now holding a
16 mb ati RAGE 128 pro video card.

awsome card. not one problem in the ALMOST 10 years i have had her.
however with the new tech of monitors, bought a wide screen 19 samsung and
can not achieve the resolution of 1440 i need. so images are stretched. and even though the resolution is not pefect, the color and action is perfect with the current card.

looking for a video card that will fit the slot in the mother board.
its a three section slot.
bought a card, but doesnt fit.

just want to do photo elements web and email. nothing fancy or grand.
no games.

does anyone know where i can find a card that will fit the mother board.

i did look at new COMPUTERS but this one runs perfect for what i do.

any help would be great. Based on what I read at http://www.pcworld.com/article/id,25029/article.html, you have 3 PCI slots and an ISA slot. APPARENTLY, you have no AGP slot. So, you're limited to PCI video cards. Take a look at:
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/category/category_slc.asp?Recs=10&Nav=|c:319|&Sort=4

Any card there over $30 will probably serve your PURPOSES just fine.

Solve : PCIE Question here?

Answer»

Alright here is the problem, I have an ASrock Sock 775Dual-VSTA with one AGP 8x slot, and one PCIE slot, now I remember reading somewhere that it is an 16x slot. I also have a Geforce 8600 GTS PCIE graphics card, which doesn't say which speed it is running at for PCIE, my problem is, I know it should be running at 16x, but when I look at the system information through the Nvidia control panel, it says PCI Express x4, now how can I EITHER 1. Change it to where it is supposed to be at, because I would IMAGINE I would get a significant performance boost, or 2. Overclock?

THANKS for the help.

That is my point, I'm not concerned about the AGP slot, I now have a PCIE card, and it should be running at PCIE 16x, but the Nvidia Control Panel reports only PCIE 4x, this should not be, and I can't figure out how to correct it. Quote from: Nastidon on November 19, 2007, 08:08:38 PM

Your motherboard only SUPPORTS PCIE x4. Next time, check the specs.

Solve : My first computer build.?

Answer»

Well, the title pretty much says it all. I'm not exactly a computer rookie, and I think that I'm confident enough know to build my very first rig. This is a link to my wish list that I have lined up on Newegg. Also, please never mind the keyboard/mouse combo, I'm actually going to go ahead and get a Logitech G11 keyboard and a Logitech G5 Mouse. The computer will be used mostly for college studies (Really! My girlfriend will be using it for her homework or whatever those college kids do) and gaming (I'm actually getting this instead of an XBox 360 because I've convinced my girlfriend that this computer I have right now just wont cut it), It should also be KNOWN that I will most likely be using a dual monitor set up, and most likely be throwing in two video cards. So, will all you computer genius guys go ahead and review this build, if you'd like, and tell me if all the little parts that I STILL don't know about line up? Now, I would obviously like some input/suggestions, and some help deciding on a video card.

https://secure.newegg.com/NewVersion/Wishlist/PublicWishDetail.asp?WishListNumber=6257452&WishListTitle=My+Computer

Edit: As for the OS, since my girlfriend will most likely confused if I go the way of Linux, lol, I will most likely be going with windows. Not Vista though, because from what I hear, its still got a lot of bugs, and I've heard that its not really mature enough for a build like this. G11/G5 combo - great choice.
I have the G5 and it rocks, and I've heard nothing but good things about the G11, am considering it myself.
Now, onto the wish list *flexes fingers*:
Case: looks good but check the reviews. Some people are saying it's flimsy.
Motherboard: consider one supporting a 1333Mz FSB to get the most out of your CPU.
Video card: I'd discount the GTS. My advice is either an 8600GT, or an 8800GT. The 8800 is a lot more powerful, but also more expensive. However, it won't need upgrading for a while.
PSU: Looks fine, plenty of power.
CPU: For the same price, get a QUAD core.
RAM: Get 2x2Gb instead of 4x1Gb. Better upgrade options as you'll have some FREE slots.
Optical drive: Consider a SATA model instead, for better cable management.

Finally, also give thoughts to you OS, you haven't mentioned it and it's one of the most important things.I also have the G5 but have the G15 k/board instead, but all logitech hardware rocks IMO! As for a graphics card you must definatly go for the 8800gt or if money is no object then the 8800 ultra, you have made the right choice than going for an xbox360 my friend! the latest PC games are excellent the moment, let the good times roll.......lol. Once again, excellent job.

I'd just push furthur for the 8800 GT. I wouldn't waste my money on the 8600's.
And I'd HIGHLY reccomend a 680i SLi motherboard.

Oh, and I have to MENTION that it would be a much better idea to buy a second 8800 GT and get the OS for free. I don't reccomend that anyone do this, but it is an option for a hardworking person who deserves more performance in their games.

Solve : My 6 weeks old HD is shot!?

Answer»

What a pain!
No warnings, nothing.
I was just at my computer this afternoon, and all of sudden it froze.
I forced it to restart, only to start getting really bad messages:
- HD failure is imminent. Please back up your data. Press F2 to continue.
- Disk boot failure, insert system disk.
At some point, I managed to get to my Desktop, but it took a looooong time, and my startup programs icons were loading extremely slow. Couple of them showed up, and THEN my HD started to grind, and click, so I KNEW.
I tried to run CHKDSK from Command Prompt, but no dice.
Dead, dead, dead.
Can you believe this? 6 weeks old?

Finally I called Compaq, and I'm suppose to have new HD by the middle of coming week.
But, man...I just brought my Vista to a perfect state, installed all needed programs, and I'll have to go through same crap again.
*censored*! I'm almost ready to cry

I'm back with my old Win 2K computer, and after using new one, this one feels extremely slow!!!!So sorry to hear about what happened.Broni, I feel your pain! If you let that drive rest overnite and hook it up as a slave in the Win2K rig you may get lucky that it'll run long enough to grab your data.
I've been this lucky a few times...not always but a few times. Thanks guys.
What I'm gonna do, I'm gonna buy another HD today, replace bad one, until Compaq HD arrives, hook up bad one as a slave, and see what I can do.
There is really not much data there. I still kept a lot of stuff on my 2K. It's more about lost settings.
When Compaq's HD arrives, I'll set the one, I wanna buy today, as an image backup.
Which should have been done long, long time ago.
Oh well, we always learn, don't we?What are you currently using for backups ? ?Hey, a quick question here...
First of all, removing bad drive was a snap. Not like old days, when you had to almost hurt yourself to get into all screws. Here, there were just two nicely visible screws, and a spring, which when released, removed a whole HD bracket. Disconnect power, and data cable, and a whole piece is in your hand.
Anyway, inside, I can see plenty of available power cables, but as for data cables...
There are two ports on mobo. One goes to HD, the other one to DVD burner.
I'm gonna need THREE OUTPUTS: one for DVD burner, and two for two HDs. Do I need to get some data cable splitter, or what?As for backups, as I said there was not much there, and I kept it on my 2K machine.
This time, I'm gonna go for with a clone for sure. That's why, I wanna buy another HD.If they are IDE drives each channel will take 2 drives...are they both SATA ? ?
Thin cable design.I blame vista, lol...ok-- not really...But I gotta rage on vista... I've yet to see ANYTHING good come from that operating system. And if you think your new one is a lot faster than your old 2k machine, try putting 2k on your new one and watch it FLY. haha Sorry I still don't care for vista, it's nice looking but other than that it's an annoying pain in the rear, that requires way too much of EVERYTHING in a computer to run. I usually run xp pro on my laptopand the cpu's usually around 140 - 160° I stuck vista on it once, and it never fell below 179° (191 is the highest i've ever seen it, becuase after that it's overheated and it reboots). If I was buying a new computer right now and it came with vista, i'd be wiping it off immediately. It's soooooooooooo much wear on a hard drive, and for what??? Some new bells and whistles to bother the *censored* out of me when all I want to do is get online and do some stuff. Sorry for that, but that's my feelings on vista. But, at least you learned to alwyas keep a backup.. I keep two backups. my laptop drive is partitioned and i keep my stuff on drive D, and my desktop's drive d is NEARLY, not entirely, the same as the laptop's d, and my desktops drive H is an image of it's drive D.. So I have 3 copies of pretty much the same thing. I have files on my hard drive that i've had since like 1997. I'd freak out if I lost it all.pudco...he had a hard drive fail... it wouldn't have mattered if he was running Windows 3.1.... If you have 4GB RAM and a 2.00GHZ processor, then you can watch Vista fly.

If you can tell me why Vista is really a useless, slow OS, I'll stop drinking TURPENTINE for your sake.Alright...let's go to good news..
I bought 500gig HD yesterday, and reinstalled Vista, and all HP crap from Recovery Disks (took about 4 hours!!!).
Then I uninstalled HP crap, and started to install my stuff, and I played with settings. I'm probably 60% there.
New drive (250gig), which should come in a day, or two, I'll keep for primary image (finally!!), and some other backup.
*censored*! It takes time.
Just to keep you guys updated, and let you know, that I'm gonna be slow.
I can imagine my inbox...must be exploding. I'll check on you later.

P. S. It's SATA, patio. I tried to to hook it up as a SECONDARY, but it's invisible. Nowhere to find. Must be totally dead by now, and I don't have much more time to play with it. Maybe on weekend.

Solve : My PC won't turn on.?

Answer»

I have a 792n HP. We ere having trouble with it sporadically turning off for no reason. The Light on the power SUPPLY indicating that the UNIT is plugged in was would go out. Sometimes it would flicker when you FIDDLED with the cord. It finally went out all together so I thought it was the power supply. I put in a new one, but the computer still will not turn on. No fans, no drives spooling up. Nothing. I also already tried switching out the cord with a KNOWN good cord. No joy. Any suggestions?

THx
AceSo you have changed the power supply and the power lead?

How many sticks of RAM do you have? If you have 2, boot up with each one on its own. If you can, try booting the machine up with a different hard disk - one that you know to be working correctly. Alternatively, try taking your hard disk and booting it in a different machine. Try taking the front panel off and check out the power button switch - make sure it is connecting properly.

It sounds like a motherboard fault, the steps above will rule out problems with the RAM and hard diskI wouldn't swap the hard drives.
Depending on which version of Windows this is there's a good chance it won't work...and it will not tell you if the drive is at fault.

p40ace where did you obtain this PSU and do you have a manuf. name and wattage rating from the sticker on it ? ?IMO i think this is a case of trial and error, would definatly USE the method to rule out ram above and make sure the PSU is connected properly, go over the system again and make sure every cable is pushed in properly, but at a glance i would say its motherboard issue??

I tried ADDING new rams to my pc but after that it won't start up at all it did not complete POST after cd-rom it STOP at floppy drive and stay there occasionally u can hear the pc tring to read the floppy drive. my monitor also not showing anythingCould be the wrong RAM.
Replace the original RAM then travel to Crucial.com and enter your SYSTEM specs and it will tell you exactly what type that machine uses.
We don't have this info so we cannot advise...but even if i SET back the old ram it still cannot bootit seems that everytime i on the pc it will have the reading from floopy drive sound then goes to cd-rom and back to floppy drive and HANG thereSomething obviously happened prior to this...
Want to provide any details at all about the machine, OS, etc. ? ?Yes, what happened to the old RAM?

Details about the computer and it's history are required. Miss Cleo is off till after Thanksgiving.Did you take static precautions?

Is it seated properly?^^ I'm agreeing with you.

You've either not loading the RAM in properly or you've tried to do it the wrong way and perhaps damaged the old one?

Post your thoughts and Ill keep you up to date on my build and testing! Are you an Over Clocker? Give me some clues on what you would like to see this setup do v.s. yours!
Think you can beat me out? Wan't screen shots to prove the win/loss. Just drop me a post on here. Just joined a few days ago and trying to get into the swing of things again.

As you can see, from my current build, its been a few years since I upgraded, and really got into it!!!!!Personally I would've gone with an Intel chip.

Even the E2140 is NICE enough, and you can overclock them like a *censored* (or so I've read).

But then again, for games and that you'd probably want a higher FSB, so the E4xxx range would've been a better line...but lets see how you find AMD dual core.Personally, I think you've made a bad decision (no offence)
Intel's Core 2 line far outperforms AMD's Athlon lineup - if you'd gone for, say, an E6550, it'd have far better performance and could overclock a lot better too.
The E2140 does indeed overclock fantastically, you can raise the FSB and it can rival the top of the line X6800, easily outperfoming the X2 6000+.
The best choice you made is the 8800GT, it's the card I would recommend.
But I'm sorry to say, I do think your CPU is a very bad choice.
However, on the bright side, your new rig will be a lot more powerful than your old one (just not as powerful as it could've been). Quote from: Calum on November 17, 2007, 05:53:40 AM

Would you say the jump in L2 Cache between the E2xxx range and the E4xxx range is worth the extra funds?

I know I'm kinda hijacking a thread, but it's a rather pointless one anyway. It depends on the purpose of the computer and the budget involved.
More cache will help performance in some applications.
Price wise, I'm seeing ~£40 for the E2140, ~£75 for the E4500, and ~£100 for the E6550.
Personally, I'd go for the E2140 for budget use, and the E6550 for other uses, rather than going in between and getting the E4500. Not sure how the prices are outside the UK, but if they're similar to that then you can see what I mean.
Of course, that's just a personal opinion.

E6600 all the way...

Don't be foolish. Only the new G0 processors. E6750/E6850. I would get (and have gotten) the Q6600 in any case (if you plan on gaming).Budget was is most of the time.

The 6000+ I bought for 159.99

The only intel for that price on newegg is the E6300 for $22 more.

If you look at most reviews one of whice is: http://techreport.com/articles.x/12091/1

The 6000+, for what I wanted to spend, far out preforms anything! Might even get close to the more costly E6550 in some tests.....

Thanks for the imput tho. I've got nothing against intel, the way AMD is looking my next system with be intel!

Not real sure how I feel about this cupset issue with intel and Nvidia. I just want the best computer for my price!

BTW E6600 Conroe = $70 more
        E6600 kentsfield = $120 more Quote from: Calum on November 17, 2007, 01:12:59 PM

I suppose the extra £25 is worth it really.

Are the Core Duos all pretty mean overclockers?

Was thinking about getting a E2140 for my first self build, but if anyone I know wants a beefyer spec, it'd be handy to know.Sid:
All of them are great overclockers.
A Google search for "model name" overclocking yields many results, including the most valuable type, real world tests from actual USERS, not websites that specialise in overclocking.
An E2140 should serve most needs fine, I'm maybe buying one myself for my next build.

Fireman, you have some good points there.
Over here, the Intel CPUs measure up as much better value than the AMD CPUs, there's always something for the same price which is higher performance.

Solve : newly built system, but nothing shows on monitor!?

Answer»

I've been slowly building a new desktop, now its complete and i turn it on the monitor doesn't get a signal. here are the specs:
MSI K9ND Speedster
2 AMD Operton 64 duelcore 2214
4GB DDR2 667 ( 2GB for each processor)
PNY Geforce 8600 GT 256MB
nForce PROFESSIONAL 3600 MCP
HP w17e 17" widescreen

i don't BELIEVE it to be a faulty mobo or video card, as far as i can tell its going through POST or atl east the keyboard leds light up on start uplike they would in POST. and i also tried a PNY Geforce 8800 card and got the same result. the 8800 needed extra power from PS, the 8600 does not. also the montor works perfectly fine as a secondary screen for my laptop.
please let me know if you have any thoughts.Have you tried another monitor on that machine? You listed everything except the power suply make, model, wattage and age. Have you tried using only ONE processor and one stick of RAM?

Alan <>< ok well the PS is a CoolerMaster 750 Watt brand new. i tried a dif monitor but still got same result. i just tried one processor and 1 stick of ram and nothing changedIf you've swapped and used both CPU's and RAM sticks with the same result it could be the motherboard or power supply. Easiest thing to swap is the power supply.

Alan <>< when something similiar happened to me on my last build it was a loose wire*
go back "grounded" and painstakingly double check your case to mobo wires.

Check all the connections...AGAIN... especially if using sata connections

video card / ram / cpu & heatsink seated firmly / connections from it to monitor?

Solve : when booting, fan starts HD feels like working, no lights?

Answer»

when I try booting, the fans start, the screen stays black and orange light stays same, no lights on keyboard, mouse, front of tower or anywhere else. MB is BFG Tech custom BUILT PC. I've reseated everything, replaced everything, replaced monitors, cords, wall plug , everything common I've tried, Any ideas? Is this one that you've just recently made? As in just making now - or has it been working for a while? I had a similar problem once, and it was because I didn't seat the motherboard properly on the brass mounts initially, and so the board had short circuited partially. If this is newly built and there are no lights on the case, this could either be due to this (possible) short circuit, or it could be that you don't have them plugged in correctly on the motherboard. Let me know any other info that you have or have tried.

No, I did not make this PC. It is about two years old. I am trying to help person that owns it. I am just below A+ certified. I've never built a complete pc. If MB is bad where should I go to find MB and instructions to find how to install MB and all of the componets from the old one 9\(including) wiring. He also wants to upgrade graphics board. ThanksOk, well if this PC isn't recently built, then it probably isn't likely that the motherboard has shorted out, however, if your friend wants to install a new graphics card, then you'll probably have to replace the motherboard anyway. But first, before I give you instructions on how to do that, we have to sort out your initial problem. From what I could SEE, system hang can occur for one of probably three reasons:
1. PSU can't cope with it now because of transistor ageing. What wattage is it?
2. Motherboard did get fried somewhere. Take a LOOK for any burn marks and have a bit of a smell AROUND. Find out if your friend had any power surges or smoke or anything coming from the computer.
3. CPU became overheated and fried, or something similar. Do you have another CPU to test with?

Whilst checking these, clean out all the collected dust in order to eliminate that as a possibility.

So if you could test all these three components separately in order to eliminate the problem, that would be great. Then get back to me. Now, in terms of getting a motherboard (as you asked where you should go to find one), it really depends what sort of CPU is currently in your machine, and if it is still current or if it is outdated. You will need to look for one with the same socket, or a socket that is backwardly compatible with your CPU. The socket is what the CPU sits in, and each generation of CPU has there own sockets. You can buy a motherboard from most computer stores. Once you have bought the motherboard, replacing it is basically a matter of unscrewing the screws in the old one and removing it (obviously, unplug all your hard drive cables, expansion cards, CPU, RAM, and PSU from it as well as case power buttons and anything like that). Then, plug back in all these things after the new motherboard is SCREWED in. If you need step by step instructions on where to find these things, let me know, however, I am assuming that if you're nearly A+ Certified that you should know what/where these are. If not, like I said, let me know. You will only need to replace your motherboard if a new graphics card does not fit the old motherboard. To find out what socket the old motherboard has, take a look in the manual or on the net, and look if it is PCI, PCI-Express, PCI-Express x16, AGP, etc.. And let me know for that too, as well as what sort of new graphics card you were looking for. Feel free to ask more questions here, or if you would find it easier, just ask me and I will give you my email address for help via Instant Messaging like MSN etc..

-StephenStephen, I'll have to get back to you on the specifics. I know it's a BFG Tech mb and a agp graphics card. He also wants to upgrade one notch the video card to an 8800. I've sent a message to the guy that built it for the specs and I'm waiting for him to respond. Thanks. If I get to the point of immediate help I'll get with you on IM. Thanks againNo problems, I am waiting.

Solve : Computer dieing??

Answer»

Ok, just recently within the last 2 days my computer has really been acting up. 90% of the time when I turn it off I put it in standby mode. Well i did this yesterday and when it was off 5 min later it would try to boot up then shut off immediately. It kept doing this until I pulled the plug and turned the switch off. Then I loaded it up and it was fine. I again put it in standby and went up to get a shower, came back down and noticed it was fully booted up. ALSO it randomly restarts almost constantly now out of nowhere on its own. I tested it and it does the same thing while fully turned off.

I put my power supply to a METER and everything tests out fine, so I'm almost 100% sure that it isn't that. The only thing I can THINK of is that since it is randomly restarting like this that it could MEAN that my cpu/motherboard is GOING. Oh and no my cpu or anything else isn't overheating. I also cleaned it out really good and it still does it.

If anyone has any ideas on what it would be I would greatly appreciate it.Try this: Shut down, unplug the power cable from the back of you tower, press and hold in the power button on your tower front for at least 10 seconds. (This will "dump" the extra charge your comp. has in it.); then, release the power button (don't hold it in) and plugin your power cord to the tower; punch the Power button for a boot and you should be good to go.That didn't seem to help. After I plugged the cord back in and hit the power button, it did the thing where it would try to but up but shut off really quick. Thanks anyway though.Couple more things to check: video card, and memory sticks.

Solve : cd drive and dvd drive are gone?

Answer»

I have opened the computer case. Everything inside looks allright to me. No loose cables or PINCHED wires. I started up the computer and still had the corrupted files or missing code 39 for both the cd&dvd drives. So I uninstalled both then restarted the computer only to have the same messages. I finally found Privoxy on my computer and have deleted it. Still don't know where it came from. Finally got rid of the Privoxy errorGood...
For the FUTURE reference, if you don't find a program in Add/remove, open Windows Explorer, go to Program Files, find program's folder, and inside that folder look for a file similar to: uninstall.exe, unstall.exe, or unwise.exe. It may also have a description of uninstallation file.
If you find such a file, double click on it to begin uninstallation.
If none of those solutions work, you just have to remove program's folder, and run some cleaner, LIKE CCleaner: http://www.ccleaner.com/ to remove program's leftovers. Thanks for all the HELP. I finally found the answer to my problem lastnight. I took care of the problem and everything is back to NORMAL. Thanks again.

Solve : Something's Failed ...?

Answer»

Right. This is a bit of a frustrating problem, it's difficult to diagnosis by just surfing google because it's such a generic problem, yet it's probably somewhat serious.

It all started when the blue error screen outlining that the computer had been improperly shut down appeared. I'm using Windows XP. After it had checked 100%, it sort of stopped - it's difficult to say if it froze, it just stopped doing anything. So my Mum turned the PC off and back on. Upon turning it back on is when the problems began.

I'm using a laptop now, just for reference. Essentially, it gets to the "Boot the CD" section, then it switches to a screen apologizing for the inconvenience and informing me that something wasn't working right. I'm given the options to

- Enter Safe Mode (There is this option, then Safe mode with Command Prompt and Safe mode with networking).

- Use last good configuration

- Start Windows Normally.

Whenever you click on any of these links, it goes to a screen like this,

When that procedure has finished, the system just simply restarts, and the same error message comes up.

From doing a bit of research, It looks like a hard disk corruption or failure, or a boot problem. To any extent, if it's at all possible, i'd like to get out some important files from the hard-drive which are to do with SCHOOL work. I've used Ubuntu, and whilst It won't allow me to access "My Documents", it does get through to certain applications on the PC hard disk such as Firefox and Windows Media Player, which makes me hope that it's not a complete hard drive failure, but still.

Does anybody have any idea of what the problem is? I know i'm going to need to get SOMEONE out to repair it at some point, but knowing what the likely problem is, and if there's any chance I can recover files, is intriguing me.

Thanks!you seem to have a pretty good grasp at finding this solution ....
before this all went down.... did you hear " the sounds of a hard drive failing" ?

any strange sqeekingGRINDING sounds from INSIDE the case ?

any grinding or high ~pitched noises ?

had the computer begun to freeze up on occasions prior to this ?

Is there a video card in there ?Unfortunately I wasn't present when it decided to stop working properly. The person who was, says there weren't any bizarre noises.

I use the PC fairly regularly, and I hadn't noticed anything freezing up on it, no more than usual anyway. The night before the incident happened, I had the same "Checking Disk" Sequence, but I skipped past it because I knew already that for some reason my PC never manages to get beyond the 100% check. The last time the computer was used before the incident was by me earlier that day, I switched it off normally.

As for Video Cards, no. This CPU is a basic E-Systems SETUP.

Solve : Problems with sound card??

Answer»

My computers power SUPPLY was recently ruined after a power outage, and when I replaced it with a new one everything was fine except the audio.
The problem is when any sort of bass instruments starts playing it creates some fuzzy feedback or static, otherwise when there's just singing or any normal music without a beat there's no problem.
So is this a sound card issue or something that can be updated with firmware?

I'm running Windows XP service pack 2 and my sound card is a Sound BLASTER Live! 24-bitHave you tried another set of speakers ? ?
They may have taken a spike as well.Have you thought about getting a UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply), i.e. a battery backup unit? It's a wise investment to protect your COMPUTER against the damage that can result from such power outages. I dont think it's the speakers as my heaadphones have the exact same problem with the bass.
I was also using a surge adapter but it's got about 6 things plugged into it and it was a very hot day and a lot of electrical thnigs were on that day. Perhaps you have a damaged sound card. Run dxdiag (Start, Run, and enter dxdiag) and run it's sound tests. What are the results?

Open DEVICE Manager and see whether it reports all sound devices are WORKING properly. Does Device Manager show any yellow triangles with exclamation marks, or unkown devices?

A surge protector does not provide as much protection as a UPS. A UPS not only provides protection against surges but also provides protection against drops in power or complete power outages. In other words, they provide a smooth flow of power and will keep your computer running, even if a complete power outage occurs. This gives you time to do a proper shutdown, or the UPS software will execute a proper shutdown if you're away from the computer.

Did you install monitor drivers? You should have a CD, which came with monitor.

Try to update your video card drivers.

Make sure, you have all necessary codecs:

My mother board is sli capable so i was wondering if i could take my old 3d card and sli it TOGETHER witht eh 8800 or does it have to be the exact same card?. Thanks ahead of TIME for the answerFrom slizone.com

In order to provide optimal symmetric SCALING, SLI technology requires the NVIDIA GPUs to match. For example, a GeForce 7800 GTX must be PAIRED with another GeForce 7800 GTX. Likewise, a GeForce 6600 GT must be paired with another GeForce 6600 GT. However, using the latest Release 80 or later graphics drivers, NVIDIA GPUs sold by different manufacturers can be used together in an SLI configuration. For example, a GeForce 7800 GT from vendor ABC can be matched with a GeForce 7800 GT from vendor XYZ.
So in other words... the GPUs on the two cards need to match.I figured but hey better ask then find out the hard way thanks a ton

I haven't purchased any of it yet (minus the two 8800 GT's... basically I upgraded to vista recently and upgraded my ram and video cards... but when running the crysis demo it was VERY choppy. THUS I believe it to be my old-ish AMD processor (socket 939 and with old DDR ram, though 4 gigs). So, I've decided to do an overhaul and get a new processor, Mobo, and power supply (SINCE i'm currently using a 460w supply... which is on the cusp of what is recommended for the two video cards anyhow).

You say you're getting a 2Gb kit, but then list it as double the price - are you getting 4Gb? I don't recommend it unless you're going with a 64 bit OS (what OS are you going for? You haven't mentioned it yet).
Also, what HDD are you planning to use?
And I would go for the Striker Extreme open box, AFAIK it's just been opened and not used, cables etc should still be with it. If you're not sure, contatc newegg and ask.

Solve : Amd or Intel??

Answer»

Hi guys!

Im about to get some new parts for my computer, and i need some advice/help choosing a processor.
I was thinking abour these two:

amd athlon 64 x2 6400+, 3.2GHZ
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600, 2.4GHz

Wich one should i pick?

The processor should be good for gaming!

Thanx! For gaming you might want to get a Core Two Duo E6850. Most games do not use all FOUR cores in a quad. Unless you are doing some hard core apps/editing then the other two cores will not be used. E6850 can be overclocked better.thanx man, the price isnt bad and the nearest shop has got it!

thanx again, FilluXi'll go for amd for gaming...I did here that amd was better for gaming but I still prefer intelGo for the quad core.
Most games do not use all four cores, true, but the extra performance will be easily seen elsewhere, and other applications will not interrupt your gaming.
Or, go for a Core 2 Duo E6550 - it's the best value for money from the line and can be overclocked to extremely good speeds if you're confident enough.
AMD's CPUs do not measure up to Intel's Core 2 lineup.
Finally, what other components do you have/are you buying?Im also buying a good Gpu , that also should be good for gaming, and i have to buy a new motherboard aswell...

Any suggestions?

These all three new have to work with eachother...(ofcourse...)

Can't you just make a thread asking for a whole PC? I know that you're unknowledged in this field, but it's only common curtesy.

Anyway..

Motherboard - Any 680i board, or wait 2 weeks for 780i
Graphics Card - 8800 GT (get 2 if you want)
CPU - Q6600 (buy the Ultra 120 eXtreme with it)

There. Should COST 600$ together, or 850$ if you're going with two 8800 GTs.aaight, i searched for the parts you suggested, but all together its a bit too excpensive, but how about these:

nForce 650i Ultra, DDR2, SATAII (Core 2 Duo)

8600GTS PCIE 256M 2X DVI HDCP

Intel Core 2 Duo E6850

aaight, i searched for the parts you suggested, but all together its a bit too excpensive, but how about these:

nForce 650i Ultra, DDR2, SATAII (Core 2 Duo)

8600GTS PCIE 256M 2X DVI HDCP

Intel Core 2 Duo E6850

Transcend JetRam 2GB Dual Channel Kit (2 x 1GB) DDR2 800MHz 240-pin DIMM

Very well. No problem. Let's just make a few changes to the list.

Instead of 650i Ultra, search for 650i SLi. You MUST have an SLi board. And besides, the 650i SLi boards only cost a little bit more than the 650i Ultra boards.

The ONLY graphics card you can buy is the 8800 GT. If it's not out yet in Finland, then wait for it. I repeat, the ONLY card. Here in the US it's only 200$, which is only a little bit more expensive than the 8600 GTS.

The E6850 and the Q6600 cost the exact same amount, so why buy the E6850? If you are desperate for saving even a few dollars, then get the E6750, but I highly reccomend the Q6600.

As for the RAM.. you only need RAM that is capable of 800Mhz, so any 800Mhz modules with CL4 LATENCY (4-4-4-12) should be fine.Aight, how about this:

MSI P6N SLI Platinum ATX

CLUB 3D GeForce 8800GT 512M GDDR3

Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600, 2.4GHz, SKT775, FSB1066, 2X4MB cache

Transcend JetRam 2GB Dual Channel Kit (2 x 1GB) DDR2 800MHz 240-pin DIMM

?

And, how powerfull Psu would i need for all this to work? Quote from: FilluX on November 01, 2007, 01:25:16 PM

That will be fine.

Something like the Thermaltake Toughpower 600-750w. Where did you find the other components? I'll show you exactly what to buy.I live in Finland so from a finnish site, i dont know if you speak finnish?

I found a these 2 that have a resonable price, any good??

Antec TruePower Quattro 850W

Zalman ZM850-HP, 850W Quote from: FilluX on November 03, 2007, 11:30:37 AM

The first will do fine. But they are both two much. You don't need 850w even for 8800 GT SLi.oh i found this from another shop

Toughpower 750W Cable Management

aint that the one you were TALKING about?

and, i was gunna buy a case also, the antec Nine Hundred Ultimate Gamer ATX, the psu fits the case, right?

and, the motherboard, i found this (MSI P35 NEO-F Intel P35) wich is much cheaper, is it ok or do i have to buy the MSI P6N SLI Platinum ATX ?

thanx
