Solve : New Mother Boarde won't boot?

Answer»

I am putting together a computer from spare PARTS I have around and I purchaced a used A open mx4sgi-4dn2 on E bay.  I cannot get the computer to boot. it will not boot from cd rom.  and It just keeps going around in a loop.  What can I do here.  MBoard standoffs in place ? ?
Thermal paste applied correctly ?
PSU new or used ? ?

Try a new optical drive as well...
Unfortunately this HAPPENS with a ton of components purchased from eBay...not sayin the board is bad but double check the above 1st...you may also want to try it with only a single stik of RAM... Quote from: Dwayne Austin on February 14, 2012, 09:07:08 AM

You can start by giving a lot more DETAILS about the parts you have put together. Also, what do you mean by it keeps going around in a loop?

Solve : What internal DVD drive can i buy to read DVD-RAM discs??

Answer»

When i was a child home movies where recorded on a DVD PANISONIC DRIVE.

Panasonic NV-VP31 DVD Player / VCR / VHS Combo

To be exact , now ive tried these discs on every drive imaginable and they still wont read. Do i need to buy the exact drive used to RECORD from VHS to DVD , or can i purchase a more modern internal dvd drive for my computer just to read them.

If you could go here : http://www.ebuyer.com/ and have a look for me i WOULD appreciate it so much.

Any Sata drive would do as long as it will read the DVD RAM encoded discs.

Its a dam pain this , there is the exact drive at the moment on ebay that my dad used when i was a kid to convert the VHS videos to dvd , but because hes used a ram drive im not sure whether this approach will work. The CD freaks are now part of myce. The link below will explain.

Solve : Envision Monitor Graphics Problems?

Answer»

I have an envision monitor, Model G917w1
The monitor behaves as if the computer is sending no signal upon first plug-in
Then, if i change a monitor setting, the vidio feed seems to refresh
for a BRIEF moment, it shows the computer output feed, but at a deep red tint. Not just red, but like darker than lunar eclipse red.
then after that brief moment, it goes back into hibernation..
i have tried multiple cables, both DVI and VGA, and all have the same result.
all help appreciatedMonitor has failed, recycle & replace it.Im sorry, i just DONT believe my 19 inch widescreen monitor is outlasting a CRT i got for free from craigslist that was made in 1996. I just dont believe that works that way. If it is not the monitor and the cable, that leaves your computer...

I think you mean your CRT outlasting your monitor... Sounds like a bad monitor to me also. Like transfusion said, If you tried different cables and you refuse to believe its your monitor then that leaves only your computer left to test. Try a different monitor on the computer. If the other monitor works fine and you've already tried different cables, then it is definitely a malfunctioning monitor....sorryhttp://wiki.answers.com/Q/Which_type_of_television_has_the_longer_life_span_LCD_or_Plasma

I've seen this before.Well, it does seem that i am guilty of that SYNDROM... I guess.

Why would it be a dvd issue if you say you have tried many other CD/DvD drives? Why don't you go to ONE of your friends or family and try the drive in one of their computers before spending 25 Bucks?

Solve : Which is correct, BIOS setup or CMOS setup??

Answer»

Hello guys, I just wanna KNOW what is the correct term about the firmware called BIOS. Should I say CMOS setup or BIOS setup? Thanks! They are both technically correct...Thanks patio, but can you elaborate more why they are both correct?BIOS

Basic Input-Output System: software program, usually written in assembly language, which starts a computer when power is turned on or when computer is reset. I will do tasks such as POST (Power-On Self-Test), which initializes and identifies system devices such as the video display card, keyboard and mouse, hard disk drive, optical disc drive and other hardware. The BIOS then locates boot loader software held on a device (designated as a 'boot device'), such as a hard disk or a CD/DVD, and loads and executes that software, giving it control of the PC. BIOS software is stored on a non-volatile ROM (Read-ONly memory) chip (the "BIOS CHIP") on the motherboard. It has a menu type user interface where some settings can be changed. These settings are stored in....

CMOS

Historically the first PCs in the 1980s used special NVRAM (Non-Volatile RAM) made with CMOS (Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor) technology to store BIOS settings. It needed a battery to retain its contents when the power was off. This term is still widely used but nowadays the job is often DONE by EEPROM or flash memory. The remaining usage for the battery is then to keep the real-time clock going. Typical NVRAM capacity is 512 bytes. The CMOS RAM and the real-time clock are usually part of the motherboard chipset on modern motherboards.

So the BIOS is software ("firmware") and the CMOS is the memory it uses. They are not the same thing but many non-technical people use the words interchangeably.

Thanks Salmon Trout! So the correct term to call it is BIOS setup? Am I right? You can choose...

So you mean both are just the same? That makes me confuse.

You said both are not the same because CMOS is a hardware (memory) and BIOS is a software. My only point is what is the "correct term" if we access the settings or setup, is it CMOS setup or BIOS setup? Thanks!Sometimes in English (and many other languages) there is more than one "right" way to say something. Example 1: trains run on rails. If you travel somewhere in a train, it is equally correct to say you made a train journey or a rail journey. Example 2:  Cars mostly run on roads. If you travel somewhere in a car, you could equally well say you made a car journey or a road journey. Example 3: Ships float on the sea. You could say you travelled by ship or by sea. Both are correct. When you access the BIOS settings, it gets them from the CMOS memory. Google suggests that more people probably write "BIOS setup", but many people write "CMOS setup". There is no single correct term. Both are appropriate usages. If English is not your first language, and you are at an EARLY stage in learning the language, you may find this confusing. Just choose the one you like best. If you really have a mental need to be told an answer, perhaps you should choose the term which has more Google hits.
Google only gives what you type. Typing the CMOS setup and BIOS setup in Google didn't really help me. But anyway, thanks! Quote from: SHENGTON on February 10, 2012, 04:45:14 AM

You didn't understand me, did you? Did you actually read my post above? For each search Google shows the number of results found. Did you see my screen shots? They showed that "BIOS Setup" was found over 3 million TIMES but "CMOS setup" only 760,000 times. Both terms are commonly used, one more than the other.

I'll say it again:

Solve : Feasibility of using a Large RAM Disk?

Answer»

How practical and how beneficial would it be to have and use a large RAM disk? A lot of what I'm about to postulate is a lot of madness I thought of on a whim based on very minimal hardware knowledge and experience so bear with me.

I believe it's gotten to the point where 8GBs of RAM is starting to become the new standard and 12GB and 16 machines aren't too uncommon or expensive.

So if I were to build a new computer with 16 GBs of RAM, would it makes sense to allocate a large portion (maybe 12 GBs) of that to becoming a RAM disk and load a lot of commonly used applications and perhaps a single game onto it?

I haven't had any experience with RAM disks before and only heard about doing this recently, but this was a hypothetical scenario that spontaneously thought of. From what I can understand, MAKING a RAM disk means taking a section of RAM and treating it as if it was a hard disk. Programs are then loaded onto it from hard disk for use.

This LEADS to programs running and loading very fast since that is the nature of fast memory and this intrigues me. What are the effects of putting a computer to sleep when a RAM disk is setup? I believe every time the computer shuts off, the contents of the RAM disk is also lost so the files need to be loaded on every time, but if I can avoid somehow that would make this setup more viable.

I also assume that having a fast hard drive would be important to actually be able to move files onto the RAM disk. If I had an SSD, would it even be worth doing all of this craziness?

My plan would be to have one large "blockbuster" game with large textures and a few commonly used applications like an office suite loaded onto the RAM disk and then just continually sleep/hibernate the computer, only rebooting for updates when absolutely needed like a system update.
The theory is good. For piratical reasons it is not often used in a way the user would recognize. The OS,or Operating System, itself manages memory in such a ways as to maximize performance overall. Parts of programs and DATA blocks are kept in memory by the OS to make it faster to reload the data or programs later in a session.  The user may not even be aware of it.

The point I want to make is that you can add a lot more memory to your system and try to manage it yourself and find that the improvement is not as much as you might anticipate beforehand.
You could try this out:  http://www.filehippo.com/download_ramdisk/

RAMDisk is the right product for you if you have a disk I/O bound application that is small enough to fit in main memory. RAMDisk is also great for storing frequently accessed data such as temp files, page files and database index files. RAMDisk is freeware up to 4GB disk sizes.

  • Speed up Internet page load times
  • Control what files and programs are stored into memory (loaded at boot time)
  • Create temporary disks for added security
  • Speed up disk-to-disk activities such as video encryption and audio ripping
  • Accelerate databases
  • Reduce compile times
Surely storing a page file in a RAM disk defeats the whole point of having virtual memory?

Quote
Myth - "Putting the Paging File on a RAMdisk improves performance."

Reality - "Putting a Paging File in a RAM drive is a ridiculous idea in theory, and almost always a performance hit when tested under real-world workloads. You can't do this unless you have plenty of RAM and if you have plenty of RAM, you aren't hitting your paging file very often in the first place! Conversely, if you don't have plenty of RAM, dedicating some of it to a RAM drive will only increase your page fault rate. Now you might say "yeah, but those additional page faults will go faster than they otherwise would because they're SATISFIED in RAM." True, but it is still better to not incur them in the first place. And, you will also be increasing the page faults that have to be resolved to exe's and dll's, and the paging file in RAM won't do diddly to speed those up. But THANKS to the paging file in RAM, you'll have more of them. Also: the system is ALREADY caching pages in memory. Pages lost from working sets are not written out to disk immediately (or at all if they weren't modified), and even after being written out to disk, are not assigned to another process immediately. They're kept on the modified and standby page lists, respectively. The memory access behavior of most apps being what it is, you tend to access the same sets of pages over time... so if you access a page you lost from your working set recently, odds are its contents are still in memory, on one of those lists. So you don't have to go to disk for it. Committing RAM to a RAMdisk and putting a paging file on it makes fewer pages available for those lists, making that mechanism much less effective. And even for those page faults resolved to the RAMdisk paging file, you are still having to go through the disk drivers. You don't have to for page faults resolved on the standby or modified lists. Putting a paging file on a RAMdisk is a self-evidently absurd idea in theory, and actual measurement proves it to be a terrible idea in practice. Forget about it."

Solve : Dell Dimension E521 Unit Questions?

Answer»

I had got a Dell Motherboard from one of my dad's novice tech friends down at where he works.  Thing is that it has one of those special front connectors.  ALSO, I dont know if the unit is good or not.  I recently got a new cpu for it a while back cause, the one had BENT pins.  Also, I think that there was one missing some where on it.  I need the heatsink for the unit too.  Also, is there a way to use it with out having the Dell Case?Yeesh, a lofty question you have.  I'll try and answer some of it.  First of all, no you do not need a dell case for the motherboard.  motherboards come in standard sizes and should fit in most cases.  Secondly - each motherboard is only compatible with SPECIFIC models and speeds of processors, and they cannot have any DAMAGED pins on them.  This requires some research, but it's best to look up the processor slot online and see if you can find a match for your motherboard model.  You do need a heatsink/fan, but those do come standard DEPENDING on the processor slot on the motherboard.

As far as special front connectors, any case will have connectors to their power switch, HDD light, Power LED, etc.  Each motherboard will have pins specific to these connections, but again they are basically standard as in each case will have the connectors and each motherboard will have the pins.  Again you will need to look up the motherboard to see where these connectors should go.  PC makers have kept things pretty standard throughout the years with how parts work with each other and connect, so with enough practice and know-how you should be able to get this working. We all ready knew that.  What I am wondering is if we cant use it with a standard case an where we can get a heatsink

Make sure you've seated your ram CORRECTLY , change the banks if you can to rule out any damage to the slot.

Solve : video card bottleneck?

Answer»

will this video card http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102952 bottleneck with althon x2 3.0ghz?Possibly; games which are CPU-intensive include Crysis, GTA IV, flight sims, real-time strategy games, and games which utilize the Source engine. I do not mean extremely CPU-intensive, though, I can get a respectable 39 FPS on GTA IV at 1600x900, all settings TURNED to MEDIUM, with the AMD computer in my specs, and 60 FPS on L4D2 at 1920x1080, 4xMSAA without ISSUES. A DECENT 20-30 FPS is also possible on Crysis 2 on the "Gamer" settings on my PC too.

If yours is a first GENERATION Athlon, I would suggest upgrading. If yours is an Athlon II, then I would say go for it.Its an atlhon  II x2 250Go ahead   no it won't bottleneck your graphics card.

Quote

i found out that it had a replaceable processor in it when i replaced the fan
Can you post the link? I cannot find one either for the manual description of the laptop model nor any replaceable parts online. Though I had thoughts its that possible to be replaceable if its an upgrade or the same since its strictly for a notebook computer. When you talk about 32 and 64 bit type, it is mostly but not all compatible when it comes to running software as called backward compatible. But not in hardware components which is by design or specific. Its either you replace the same processor or the whole mobo.well... sorry but i dont know what link to reply, can you specify? and i dont know if my system is or is not 64 Bit, i know i have windows 7 32 but i was going to restore the laptop to check if it was 64, here is the link to the best info i could find on my laptop

Many laptops have replaceable processors-here is a guide as to how to upgrade: http://www.pcworld.com/article/148910/replace_your_laptops_cpu.html

http://ark.intel.com/products/35563/Intel-Core2-Duo-Processor-T9600-(6M-Cache-2_80-GHz-1066-MHz-FSB)
http://ark.intel.com/products/35581/Intel-Core2-Duo-Processor-T5800-(2M-Cache-2_00-GHz-800-MHz-FSB)
I think you should be fine. The T5800 is a pPGA478, whereas the T9600 is a PGA478. They are compatible. The extra P just means plastic; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pin_grid_array has nothing to do with the socket. According to the one of the reviews here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819111006 A user upgraded a 13'' Dell Vostro with a GM45 Chipset which has a pPGA478 CPU, with the T9600 and had no issues.
EDIT: http://reviews.cnet.com/laptops/sony-vaio-vgn-cs115j/1707-3121_7-33342075.html GM45 Chipset. All Clear. Thanks! now, does the front side bus speed matter at all? i mean, does it have to be compatible with my comp? because i think i saw on the specs that it is 800MHz
and this one would be compatible too right?
http://www.google.com/products/catalog?q=mobile+processors&hl=en&safe=off&tbas=0&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.,cf.osb&biw=1280&bih=675&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=shop&cid=14437488140647817981&sa=X&ei=U8UzT5s4s6awAtPr9OwB&ved=0CLEBEPMCMAM#scoring=tpwait a sec... i restored my computer (to check if it was 64 bit) but its not, my laptop is from 2007, idk if it can still support a 64 bit processor, if not, are there any places i can find some good P socket, 2.7GHz or higher, dual core processor? It supports a 64-bit processor with 64-bit disabled? That's odd...
But good catch there... I wasn't able to find any models of your laptop with a 1066 MHz FSB. However, Intel says that the GM45 Express chipset:
http://ark.intel.com/products/chipsets/35509
is compatible with 1066 MHz processors.
For safety there is the http://ark.intel.com/products/33917/Intel-Core2-Duo-Processor-T9300-(6M-Cache-2_50-GHz-800-MHz-FSB) T9300 2.5 GHz with a 800MHz FSB. Do note that just because a processor has a higher frequency doesn't mean that it will perform better than another.
If at all possible I really would bring the laptop to a store and try out different processors-the lack of information on this laptop online is a problem, and we don't want to make the wrong purchase-laptop processors can be six times as expensive as their desktop counterparts.I am really confused about this...
the chipset you posted reads that the max memory is 8 GIGS, and mine lists that it can only hold 4 gigs ddr2 max.
i just checked speccy (to check the chipset) and it reads "GM45/GM47", i dont know whats wrong here. i remembered one program that identified the exact computer model, the computer model it listed was: "Sony VGN-CS VGN-CS110E". i just looked this up and these specs seem to fit with my comp:
http://store.sony.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10551&storeId=10151&langId=-1&partNumber=VGNCS110E/P/BSTOCK#specifications
i took some screenshots of the results from speccy and the driver software if that could help to figure out if this is compatable with a good 64bit processor (im stressing 64bit and 2.5GHz or more because i need it for Adobe After Effects CS5)

[year+ old attachment deleted by admin]Speccy not too RELIABLE, try HWInfo32 or HWInfo64 depending on your OS.  http://www.hwinfo.comWOW! i like this program a lot more than speccy, but i have a few questions...

1. it says that ddr3 is supported, but i have ddr2 ram, does that mean i can install ddr3 ram into my laptop?
2. where can i find whether or not the motherboard is 64bit compatable?
3. it says my motherboard has 3 PCI Express x1 slots, does this mean i can install a new mobile graphics card?
4. i see somthing in my processor under the "extended feature flags" that says "64Bit extentions - Present", does this mean that this is a 64 bit processor?

and it says that my computer is a: "Sony VGN-CS110E" the motherboard's name is the "Intel GM45 (Cantiga-GM) + ICH9M (Base)"

[year+ old attachment deleted by admin]I know of no laptop that supports 2 different types of RAM. Maybe other models of your laptop chipset support DDR3, but since you have DDR2 RAM, no. DDR3 RAM will not fit into a DDR2 slot.
Mobile graphics cards do not use mini PCI-E, they are either soldered ONTO the motherboard or they use MXM: http://www.mxm-upgrade.com/ http://www.mxm-sig.org/ Mini PCI-E is mainly used for WWAN/WLAN/DVB tuner/extremely small SSDs like in the MacBook Air.
This is one of the solutions for an external graphics card for laptops that relies on an expresscard slot:

..., i know i have windows 7 32 ...
HWInfo reports Windows 7 Ultimate which is 64-bit & 32-bit.  I'm sure this was not shipped with the Sony Vaio laptop.

1-4.  Support means the functionality is there, but all the physical hardware may not exist.  Chipset & cpu determine this.
http://www.intel.com/Products/Notebook/Chipsets/GM45/GM45-overview.htm

You are currently using a 32-bit OS, but your hardware already supports 64-bit.  I wouldn't worry about trying to change cpu's.  Have you attempted to install the 64-bit version of Win7?
If you can install Win7-64, looks like you have 1-2GB RAM module, 1-1GB RAM module.  You might be better off increasing RAM capacity, depending on the applications you use.yea, i was going to put another gig into it because it only supports four total. but is it possible that my processor is 64 bit when it was shipped with a 32 bit os (win Vista)? i looked in the device manager but it says under "matching device ID : acpi\genuineintel_-_x86" i know that x86 architecture is 32 bit but if it was 64 bit why would it say this? im really confused ( Quote from: droid200 on February 14, 2012, 06:44:35 AM

I have a 64-bit compatible processor http://ark.intel.com/products/42770/Intel-Celeron-Processor-E3200-(1M-Cache-2_40-GHz-800-MHz-FSB) running Windows XP SP3 32-bit and here is a screenshot under Device Manager:

Have you actually tried installing a 64-bit OS?

Notice that the disc says "64-bit software"?i think i have, can i upgrade from 32 to 64 os without losing my data?

Solve : What graphics card would two Geforce 460 be equivalent to??

Answer»

Hi, I am just wondering what two Geforce 460's would be equivalent to in SLI and what PSU I would  need? I was also wondering if SLI causes many problems? I was going to get a 3meg Geforce 580GTX, but they are STILL so expensive. Thankyou!!Last I used an SLI rig performance was about 30% more than it would be with a single card. Don't know if that improved much over the years.
Might want to just read some reviews where they do tests.Personally I would just keep your 2 460's and wait for the prices to go down.  Dual 1GB 460's are comparable to 1 580 3GB right now.  If you really wanted, get ONE of the 580's and later on consider doing an SLI.  One 580 on a good system should overkill everything you throw at it right now.  Once it starts to show age, a second one will breathe new life into your system at that time.Crafty,

I'd go with the 460's right now also. A 500 what Power Supply should be fine for those cards. Just make sure the power supply has the pci-e power connectors for the cards.

MichaelThe 460's will offer less video memory than the 3gb 580. But this really has no downfall unless you're playing DX11 games in high resolutions with Anti Aliasing. Check out this link, this website actually pits two GTX 460's in SLI vs one GTX 580 and then explains the pros and cons: http://www.hardocp.com/article/2010/12/02/geforce_gtx_580_vs_460_1gb_sli/3Thankyou all for your replies I really appreciate it, but I have decided on going for a geforce 570 GTX. I have found that my TOWER is a little on the small side for SLi at present and that is something I'll have to upgrade next. I decided on the Evga super overclocked Geforce 570GTX and looking at it's performance, it's not to far behind the Geforce 580GTX, and it's a little below two Geforce 460GTX SLi on performance. My thinking behind this is that the Geforce 570GTX will come down in price much more then the Geforce 580GTX, and when I SLi two of these cards TOGETHER I should have a performance of the scale  . For now though the card plays all the games I play on high settings and I'll look to get a game like metro when I have two of these cards. Anyway let me know what you think of the Geforce 570GTX as a good purchase, I got this card for a good price of £260 since most other places were selling them at £280 - £300 plus.I think the EVGA GTX 570 SC will suit you just fine  I have always been a fan of EVGA and I just got the EVGA GTX 560 SC a month or two ago. I have yet to find a game that I couldn't play on highest settings with 1920 x 1080 res. Good Choice with the 570 SC!

Solve : Computer won't start up in normal mode?

Answer» HOPEFULLY I am in the right forum but my computer won't start up in the normal mode. It will start up, go to the black screen which gives me the options of starting normally or in one of the Safe Modes. No matter what I do, it sends me back to that screen.
This is a Compaq Presario desktop using Vista. Any help will be greatly appreciated but please keep in mind that I am not a techie!
Thanks! What is NEW or DIFFERENT since the last time everything worked properly (ie, new hw, new sw, virus, error, etc)?I'm not sure  yet. My teenage girls use this computer and are always downloading things. I have uninstalled a couple of them but now I get an error message saying that the Windows Installer may not be working right.

Here are some things that I suspect yet I can't uninstall them:
Yontoo 1.10.02
Play Pickle
Living Play
IMVU Avatar Chat I have tried System Restore and that didn't help the problem. Is there a way to go back a bit farther such as a month? Not if you haven't created external backups / images of your system, no. Have you tried the startup repair options by booting to the Vista cd? I have tried the start up repair options and it still doesn't help. Is there a way to fix the Windows Installer?I'm a little unclear here. If you can't get into Windows, how are you getting an error about Windows Installer? When I am in safe mode. Quote from: pappy17 on February 15, 2012, 02:53:08 PM

Okay, the above statement in your first post made me think you couldn't get into safe mode. Is that where you see the error message? If so, what is the EXACT message and EXACTLY when does it appear?I am working in Safe Mode now. It will let me in Safe Mode but not in the normal mode. Sorry for the confusion! Now, once I am in safe mode I go to Programs & Features to see if I can uninstall those suspected items I mentioned before. That is where I get a message.
Stand by and I will see if I can post the message,
When I try to uninstall Yontoo I get this:
C:\Progra~2\TARMAI~1\{889DF~1\Setup.dat
Error 2 while loading archive: The system cannot find the file specified.

When I try to uninstall IMVU it goes about half way and just keeps running. You did not say you were getting the error when you tried to uninstall these things. Please, you need to give complete information in your first post. We've wasted a lot of time so far. WHAT EXACTLY are you TRYING to uninstall - what files or programs.

Solve : Ink Cartridges?

Answer»

My jet INK cartridge question was my first inquiry with this forum, and I didn't expect to receive answers were two forum members began GOING at it.
Thanks for the opinions, but I have ALREADY made up my mind as to my future cartridge purchases. Since I have an HP printer bought about a year ago, I have already spent more for ink than what I paid for the printer.
Inputs were interesting. You will ALWAYS spend more for the ink than the printer. That's a fact.

I can apologize for the petty, immature bickering by some of the junior members. Perhaps they will grow up (or leave) soon.

I trust you did get a few coherent responses.

Welcome aboard, and don't give up on us.  I'm not GIVING up, believe me.  This forum seems to fit my needs, IMHO you find these types any any forum you use.

Probably, I have already been some assistance to a member having difficulty with their Flash Drive. Hope I HELPED them.

Solve : Compaq Memory upgrade & question?

Answer»

::)Well here it goes for the third time. Having a H**L of time staying latch up.  I having a problem upgrading the memory in my computer.  I sent E-Mail to H.P got no reply.  I seen there spec sheet and id showed size but no indication of any special instructions.  I check various memory dealers and seen what they had listed for memory for that machine.  I ran the  Bel Arc utility it came up with a wrong configuration  I try 3 times. I bought the computer used.  NO books are docs.  Owner said it was possessed.  I got a lot of the problems iron out. The biggest one got me a little baffle an that is memory. I have a  Compaq Presario 5000 series, Model 5008US, processor AMD-K6 2/506, Award Bios V4.51G Award Software, Also have a Packard Bell Bios FR510 BIOS ver 1.18, 6 gig hard drive, CD player,on boards sound card and on board rage pro video, Running widows Millennium, now for the memory is has two slots with a total of 64 megs. From what I can tell it mix memory Chip 1 MT16LSDT 46AG-66CL2  9736AA4WJ .032  Chip2 MSC2354641D-10BS16 FH   8286004 OKI Japan.  Ok  now what I have read and understand this unit should be upgradeable to 512 MB that using 2 chips of 256, from what I also gather it can be 100 MHz or 133 MHz that is backward compatible.  As for as Ecc there was no mention if this would be problem.  I found 2 matching chips that were made by IBM that were 256 with Ecc. The Info as follow from chip 256mb 32MX72 100 MHz 3.3 volt
When I install them the computer started to beep meaning memory problems.  I install a 32 meg and 256 meg it showed 32 meg.  I pulled the the 256 out and put  128 meg chip I had from another system and install it showed 32 meg.  Put of the 32 in back to 64 meg.  Any body has an idea  what is taking place?? Or better yet how to upgrade this unit.  well slow down a bit.

what motherboard are you using? (you may have already said that but so far i don't know)

do you use DDR or DDR2?

Are you sure you INSERTED the ram sticks correctly ?The mother I have not been able to Identify.  But the board has the ALI chipset.  The memory is the 168 pin Sdram 3.3 volt.   On this paticular chip I NOTICE when you install the chip it can only go one way it is key to not allow you to put it in backwards.  I also observe when you press the chip in the plastics ears fold up and then you can finish latching the chip in the slot If you can, use CPU-Z. It's a freeware program that gives you all of your computer specs. It'll give you memory type installed, motherboard identification, and some more stuff.

So give it a shot. Google CPU-Z and you'll find it easily.Or travel to CRUCIAL's site and enter the model # and it will tell you exactly what type of RAM that machine uses...Yes, Crucial can do it too. You don't need to know motherboard type if you did not customize computer yourself (i.e., you bought a  compaq computer from store without any custom configurations for example)Thanks for the info.  I downloaded CPU-Z for the heck of it something new.  It an interesting utility.  Werther it matter the mother board is a Aladdin,  They only gave the size of memory it  had no other info.  I went to crucial and found what will work is a 168 Sdram at 133mhz cl=2 unbuffered non-parity  32x64 that would total a 256 module.  From the looks of the module's I have there seem to be many things  that are not correct.  One I don't see where it is a cl-2 what ever that means and it has Ecc capability but the biggest thing I see is that chip is 32 m x 72.  I think that made be the reason the chip will not work.  Well back to E-Bay.I didn't say you had to buy from Crucial...i simply stated they will tell you exactly what type that machine will run on...
Best of luck on eBay.Those Compaqs from that era were VERY particular about the RAM that would work. Although something else seems similar, it just will not work. Been there, tried that.

Crucial is not necessarily the cheapest, but it is guaranteed to work. In this case I firmly believe that what you spend with them will be less than all of the dozens of chips you buy off eBay before you believe me.

And your machine does NOT use ECC memory, so don't even go there. If you refuse to consult a reputable memory dealer, e.g. Crucial, for your memory needs and are still lost in the wilderness; here's some more information for you to chew on - low-density versus high-density memory modules:

http://reviews.ebay.com/Myth-Low-Density-vs-High-Density-memory-modules_W0QQugidZ10000000001236178
Thanks for posting that link. I have read it before and it is accurate.  That should be required reading for everyone playing with RAM.

Solve : Computer Stuffed Up..?

Answer»

I really need some advice on what to do!     I just got a computer from a friend which is a P4 2.6ghz, 512 RAM, 80GB Hard drive, ATI 9200 (Or something with a 9 at the start)

This is how I messed it all up...

So I turned on the computer and it came up with Linux, sabayon installed... I turned off the pc and inserted a win 98 SE cd to reformat it.. rebooted and I went through the menus until I came to the Win 98 setup, I went through some more options until I came to reformatting when it suddenly froze  . I restarted and tried again only this time reaching the second menu of 98's setup...
I continued to reboot and try it again for 10-15 mins..    I then thought I could move my old hdd (Which had 98 installed, [but was only 4GB ]to  reformat it that way) But unfortunately the computer could not find my Linux hdd once booted .

I thought I might have to get some drivers for my mother board / gpu (Which are both MSI ) I got onto the MSI site and downloaded MSI LIVE update which I ran straight away. It found that I  had a Bios update or something so I quickly downloaded and tired to run it..... It said something about bios flash memory or any thing along those lines.

I then accidentally bumped my pc power cord which SWITCH to power off. I plugged every back in and tried to reboot, only to find the screen not respond

Since then I have not been able to get my PC work with any screen. I have changed the graphic cards around with a Nvidia one as well I have changed the cmos battery .

Btw; I have not heard any beeps,
The computer sounds normal
Hardrives and dvd drive working normal

What I think has happened is while flashing something, I may have corrupted the something  Causing the screen not to show any thing.

Any Advice would be greatly appreciated  If you lost power during a BIOS flash, that motherboard is PROBABLY history.

There really was no reason to do that, and if you are unfamiliar with the art of flashing a BIOS, one can only hope that you got the right image file. If you didn't, then the motherboard is probably history.

I would find the correct downloadable BIOS for that motherboard and put on a floppy as directed. Then insert it and see if the machine will boot. If that doesn't work, you're ready to go shoppping.

On the slim chance it does work, you have dodged the bullet and learned a lesson. Be sure to post back in any case.

In the future, you need to remove the video drivers BEFORE installing another card or especially any drivers for it. Does that board have onboard video as well? If so, you will want to plug into that and remove other video card(s) until it is resolved.Omg....

Questions:
 1) So it is only my motherboard that is stuffed up? Every thing els will be fine?
 2) Should I buy another motherboard or wait until JAN, and spend the 20-30$ on my new computer?
 3) I don't have a floppy drive.  Could I use either CD, DVD or USB?
 4) How should I get rid of Linux from that hard drive? It doesn't auto detect.
 5) Before, my friend also gave me a spare hard drive (40gb) I connected it all up and when I started the PC it went 'POP' and some smoke came out.. Is it still usable and why did it POP? I'm pretty sure I connected it right.

Edit:

 6) If the motherboard is history, why does every els work? Or is it just the power?

Why do you say everything else works? You have now destroyed a hard drive as well?

At the least you need a new motherboard. You also now see the need for those archaic floppy drives. If you replace the motherboard you will need to get one that supports THAT processor, THAT particular type of RAM and THAT particular video card type. If you are getting another one in January anyway, then you may want to wait. If you are able to verify what you need and can get it installed by yourself, or with the help of a Geeky friend, you can be up and running sooner.

With your track record you may want to consider the "Geeky friend" IDEA. For a free dinner, a pal may swap is a new motherboard and troubleshoot it.

No, you have to push the "Delete" (DEL) button at the first screen, which should last a good few seconds.

The key to access the BIOS depends on the manufacturer of the board. It is not always 'del'. Quote from: quaxo on November 23, 2007, 07:58:28 PM

True. Thank you for correcting me.
In any case, the first screen shall post directions on what key you must press in order to reach the BIOS page. Quote from: warcraft2007 on November 23, 2007, 12:52:28 PM

It quite possible is that key.
You want to know what I do when I don't know what key I need to press?
Either look it up, or madly hit F1, F2, F10, F11, F12, Delete and Escape.
If that doesn't work, I reboot and try other keys like Ctrl+Alt+Escape.
It may not be an elegant solution, but it does work. Quote from: Jess607 on November 23, 2007, 10:06:53 PM
...In any case, the first screen shall post directions on what key you must press in order to reach the BIOS page.

Unless said display has already been defeated in CMOS.

Why don't we start with some facts, as we have guessed all over about the BIOS even though it is unlikely that the problem will be found there?

Computer make and model number? (Or motherboard if not a brand name system)

Age of the system?

Make wattage and age of the power supply? (It's on the side of it.)

Open the case and see if the CPU fan is turning when you press the ON button.

All details of what happened prior to the problem.

Version of Windows being used?

Etc.?it is a ibm. i bought it from a guy and i dont know how old it is. i guess like 3-5 years.
its using windows melnium. 150w power supply. heres what when i got the computer it had windows melinium installed on it so i installed xp. then i worked fine for about 6 months then randomly it would just restart. so then i poped in the recovery disk wich reloaded malinium and now as soon as it starts up it restarts.

oh and the cpu fan does spin. It's older than 3 to 5 years if it was running WinME...
DLoad and run Everest Home and post the computer summary info...It sounds like about a Pentium 3, probably a 500 - 800. Those IBM PSU's do last a long time but not forever. Have you done ANY work inside the case? Does the CPU have a fan or just a heatsink?

You can google for Everest Home or click here:

http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4181.html Quote from: warcraft2007 on November 24, 2007, 12:48:18 PM
150w power supply.

Make sure you're not over the PSU's limit. Overloading a power supply can cause the exact issue you're talking about.

Can we get your full exact specs of the entire system?

AMD or Intel?
Processor type and speed? (ex. Pentium 3, 500 Mhz)
Make, type, and model of video card? (ATI or Geforce, AGP or PCI, and the model of the card)
Amount and type of MEMORY? (how many sticks, capacity of each stick, type of memory)
How many hard drives? (number of actual physical disks, not partitions)
What PCI cards do you have? (modem, sound, etc. as WELL as models if you know them)
Optical drives? (CD, CD-RW, DVD, DVD-RW and how many drives)
Number of external USB devices? (including all things: mouse, keyboard, cam, etc.)
Number of fans? (including fans on the case, but not the power supply or the processor)

With that information, we should be able to calculate power usage on your system.

I've already made an estimate of what you might have on a basic system, and it comes to about 180w, exceeding the 150w that your current PSU is supplying. However, with more accurate information, a more accurate calculation can be made.

Solve : 2 issues possibly related, Please try to help!?

Answer»

I have 2 excrutiatingly annoying issues with my PC

1. While I play a game in the usual full screen mode, after a minute or so the game will minimize to the desktop causing me to either die or make a huge MISTAKE which makes life hard when playing BF3 or COD or any other for that matter.

2. While typing, the cursor will suddenly vanish from infront of me & I have to click inside the type feild again to continue, sometimes I type whole sentences before I notice I've typed nothing. This happens almost as frequently as the screen minimising issue so I'm guessing they are some how related.

Here's a list of things I've DONE to find the problem.

Re-installed graphics drivers ( I have latest compatable drivers) even tried older ones
Tried each & every individual setting in the nvidia control panel.
Tried every AVAILABLE resoloution in game settings and every changable setting in graphics/video options.
I always return all settings to their previous or default state.

I even re-installed W7 (fresh install) & it's still happeneing which tells me its to do with hardware.

There are no programs running in the background that are prompting me so THATS not why it minimises to desktop either.

Is there something I can use to generate a full PC report so someone may try to detect the issue?
Please help, it's driving me nuts...really!

Solve : Can I run Kingdoms of Amalur??

Answer»

Dear Gamers,
I have a Radeon HD 6670 and an Intel Core 2 Duo E7200  2.53 ghZ can i RUN kingdoms of amalur, mass effect 3, battlefield 3, cod mw3 on my pc on high setting (or atleast medium)? and also future games?Kingdoms of Amalur: http://www.gamers-lab.com/game/kingdoms-of-amalur-reckoning/pc-system-requirements-and-release-date/
Intel C2D 2.2 GHz/Athlon X2 5000+ and HD 3650/GeForce 8800 GT. I would say PASS, because a HD 6670 is in between an 8800 GT and the low-end HD 3650.

Mass Effect 3: http://www.joystiq.com/2012/01/19/mass-effect-3-pc-system-requirements-blasted-open-by-bioware/

Intel C2D E4300/AMD equivalent and Radeon X1800/GeForce 7900 GT. PASS.

Battlefield 3: http://www.gamestop.com/pc/games/battlefield-3/90173

MINIMUM SPECS: C2D 2.4 GHz/Athlon (first generation) X2 2.7 GHz and HD 3870/GeForce 8800 GT. FAIL(on the graphics, your CPU is FINE.)
RECOMMENDED SPECS: Quad Core CPU (Not precise, I'm assuming due to the game being a relatively modern one it would at least need a Core 2 Quad Q8200/Phenom II X4 965), and HD 6950/GeForce GTX 560 Ti. FAIL.

Call of Duty MW3: http://www.game-debate.com/games/index.php?g_id=1400&game=modern%20warfare%203

Pentium Dual Core E6600/Phenom 8750 Triple Core and Radeon X1900/GeForce 8800 GS. PASS.

Your system is a mid-end system that will handle future games on low-mid resolutions-the C2D is an already outdated platform, and the Radeon HD 6670 is considered to be a fast entry-level card aimed towards the HTPC market.

Graphics Card Comparison: http://www.hwcompare.com http://www.videocardbenchmark.net
CPU Comparison: http://www.cpubenchmark.netYou can go to www.canyourunit.com, pick a game from their list and have them scan your PC to see if you meet the requirements. If you don't meet the requirements of the game they will tell you why.how wud it help if i upgradd my processer from c2d 2 2nd gen then cud i handle games? Most games are more GPU-intensive than CPU-intensive. It would help if you upgraded your GPU to something slightly more beefier, like the Radeon HD 5770 or the 6770.
You can't upgrade your Core 2 Duo to a Core i series-your C2D relies on the LGA 775 socket, and the fastest you can upgrade to is a Core 2 Extreme X9770.

Solve : Who made my motherboard??

Answer»

How do I find my motherboard manufacturer?
I have an AMI BIOS 1.0 and need to update it. The AMI website says I should go to the mobo manufacturer's site for the upgrade.
All that is written on my mobo is "Consistent" I don't know if it is a manufacturer...
Several utilities give the OEM ID as 9999
Please help me find the manufacturer, Any help is appreciated DLoad and run System Information for Windows.I tried that. It says that the manufacturer and model of motherboard is unknown...Is it possible to open up your computer and glance around for any logos on the motherboard?yes, I did. "Consistent" is written on the board. It has a logo in the shape of a sphere. I googled it but can't find it. I don't know if such a manufacturer exists!Yeah I wasn't able to find anything either...
Anything else written on the motherboard? Perhaps a model number or something?

What is your computer's chipset? (you can find this through http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/cpu-z.html)
If possible, could you take a picture of your motherboard and post it on here for us to look at?
Thank you.Why do you have to update your BIOS when you don't know what motherboard it is? You don't even know what firmware is available since you don't know the brand ... OP may be experiencing hardware compatibility issues with an older PC, and wants to see if the manuf. has released a fix... for example   http://www.pcworld.com/article/187437/how_to_update_your_bios.html

Updating the BIOS for my Lenovo Thinkpad T500, for example, added support for a new AC adapter and a 1600-by-900-pixel screen RESOLUTION on an external monitor; the update also fixed fan speed and Webcam issues that could not have been handled by updating Windows or my specific device driver software.

I am trying to update the bios to see if it solves the problem. I also noticed a '945LM4' on the motherboard after a close look. I have an Intel 945 express chipset family.See if these help

Solve : Confused about Voice Modems, SIP and TAPI?

Answer»

I am trying to buy a software that will allow my calls to go through it-for an auto attendant feature.  The software requires a VOICE modem that is either SIP or TAPI.  I currently use OOMA and cannot find anyone at OOMA that know if I can still use their Voip through one of these VOICE modems and have the software work.

Has anyone out there TRIED this or have experience with using a modem to redirect phone through PC?

I have spent hours trying to figure this out.

Thank youWhat TYPE of Internet service are you using?  Is it DSL or cable or dialup? CableExactly what is the auto attendant feature?  Evoice is one, http://www.voicent.com/pbx.php this is a software I am looking at buying...i just don't understand what I need.  ThanksI'm guessing you are buying this for an office.  How many lines or stations are INVOLVED?I want to have one at my LOCATION and one at my assistants house. After reading the info on that website, I have the impression that you could use Skype with that service and, if so, you would not need a voice modem.  I'm not absolutely sure about this but it's what I gather from the website.  Have you seen the videos at http://www.voicent.com/slide/pbx.htm?  If not, I think they may clear your mind of some of your CONFUSION.

Hello,

It would probably be a good IDEA to RUN memtest86 to check for memory errors. You can download it for free here:http://www.memtest86.com/download.html

Another idea is to use one stick at a time. Seeing if you get the random REBOOT with each one.

Solve : PC shuts off?

Answer»

I have an older generic PC - about 3-4 years old, 30 GB HD, running Windows XP that I'm trying to revive as a 2nd computer for my family.   I took it into a repair place and they determined that the PC, which at that point wouldn't even boot up, needed a NEW power supply.  They put one in and it booted just fine.   But now that I'm home I realize it then just shuts itself down after a couple of minutes... no messages, no warning..  the screen just GOES black and it shuts down.
I don't want to sink lots more money into this older machine but if it's an easy and reasonable fix, I'd LOVE to know.  Any ideas?
Thanks.sounds like it is overheating. open the computer up and turn it on (just dont touch anything  ). make sure ALL the fans are working. you should have one fan on your CPU, at least one case fan  on the back (a case fan is any fan that is attached to the computer case), and , if you have a GOOD graphics card, one on that. you may have more than one case fan depending on your case, just be sure to CHECK that they are ALL working. And while the case is open, blow a fan directly in there (not a hair dryer  ) and see if the added ventilation helps.

Any other details about the machine?

Can you be more specific about the size and resolution you want and perhaps the acceptable range of sizes and resolutions?  If you're in the U.S., I suggest visiting newegg.com and READING buyer reviews on various models of monitors.  I'd be open to various brands such as ASUS, Acer, Samsung, and others.

Do you want a monitor with both DVI and VGA connections?  If not, then which type do you need?  Do you want a monitor with built-in speakers?  Any other specific technical requirements? Thanks for the reply!!!!

show up as purple. It was showing up as blue.
Also, what type is the better one to get? One that is LED or LCD? Quote

I'll defer to other forum members on that question.  It's not an area I've researched.  You can read newegg.com reviews on the Samsung monitor at http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824001487&Tpk=Samsung%u00ae%20S23A300B

Here's another monitor that selling at a very attractive promotional price now: Acer G245HQABD 23.6" LCD Monitor Black
Thanks for the links.
I don't really like the problems that is says with the Sansung.
Don't care much for the remarks they say about the ACER either.Well, the Acer has 77% 5 eggs and 9% 4 eggs on the reviews, significantly better than the Samsung.  I think I'd have no qualms about buying that Acer.  Newegg.com is generally good about allowing returns if you have a problem within the allowable return period. I haven't read reviews on it but, as long you feel comfortable with that choice, then that's fine.  But, you realize that HP is obviously going to recommend an HP monitor, don't you? In the event that the money for a monitor has not left your possession as you requested information on lcd/ led comparisons here is a fine article that will help you to decide on what suits you best.

Solve : Weird Startup?

Answer»

Within the last week my PC has been starting very strangely and I wondered if anyone here recognised the symptoms.

I turn my PC on as normal using the power switch and the large fan on the top starts spinning, then slows down, then spins again and it keeps doing this. The MONITOR does not show the PC booting at all.

Then if I HOLD down the power button to turn it off, when I turn it back on the 2nd time it all kicks in to life and boots properly.

This happens when I try to turn it on either in the morning or when I get home from work, aka after a period of time of not using it.

Any ideas what is going on or what may be about to fail ?

Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated. If you have access to an other power supply of equal or greater value try that.truenorth

My bad.
The power supply is cycling because of an parent overload. This can be neither a failing PSU or almost any component in the system. Even a DVD drive can do that. Or a hard drive. Or a electrolytic on the motherboard.

it should NOT be necessary to use a larger PSU,

PSU getting ready to fail...

Could it be that the Psu is not good enough for these computer specs, or would you say it is defiantly on it's way out? I ask this because I have just added another harddrive making that four Harddrives in total. Below is a list of some of my specs. I have also been running the comp for 3 Hours now and it hasn't done it again yet.

Cpu i7 930 factory overclocked 4.0ghz.
ram Geil 6gig.
Graphics card Geforce 570GtX.
Psu CoolerMaster 700w.
Hard-Drives 4.
Gigabyte motherboard.

That should be adequate power for that setup...

CollerMaster has a Warranty return policy.Hi Frankie

I would run a disk CHECK on the hard drives. Some drives reset on to many errors and could be the click you hear.
A very easy to use program is HDDtune there is a 30 DAY trial of the pro version and it runs under windows.

Let me know if this helps
Thanks

Solve : Asus P5AD2-E Premium motherboard problems?

Answer»

My COMPUTER will only start if I first enter the bios, I have tried using the default settings, upgraded all my drivers, I hate to change the motherboard without being sure.

In my effort to solve the problem I replaced the hard drive which I had cloned from the OLD drive, after many attempts I got it to work but each time I shut it down for the night the next day it would not start until I went into the bios , did really nothing, and then it would start.  I changed the Bios battery, updated and flashed the Bios with the latest version 1006.006 but my problem still EXISTS.  I did all the SCANS Seatools for Seagate Barracuda can do and the drive passed all tests.

Ideas please, I suspect problems with my motherboard but want to try all first.

Thanks
God bless
FromjimI forgot to mention, the error message is,  Reboot and select proper boot device

Thanks

JimDoes anyone know if the problem could be that the new drive is a 6GBps and the old one was only 150 MBps, both are sata DRIVES, Those are both pretty small drives/partitions...Post a screenshot of Disk Management and fully describe what you have done in the BIOS...

Solve : Computer constant beeping and won't start(Please help)?

Answer»

Hello, I am new here and am having problems with my computer. I have posted on another forum so I will just post what I had in that topic on here, I really need help as I am having problems. I have tried alot of things but still the same beeping sound, here is the post:

Here is what's going on, my older brother left his computer on for a whole night and had woken up to a constant beeping sound. He turned it off and on plenty of times, after he tried that and took out all the wires he just had the power cord in and still the beeping noise, and there is no pause it is just constantly going. After that he asked me what is wrong with it so I looked up many things on the internet and they said its the RAM or Video Card so I opened up his computer and I had cleaned out and put back his RAM TESTED it then it was still beeping the same so then I tried to see if it was one of the RAM sticks he had that was BAD(He has 6gbs of RAM) I have checked all of them and nothing new happened just the same old thing. The Video Card I have know idea if he has one as I don't see it anywhere. If you want a video I can UPLOAD one real quick just let me know, and I didn't post the specs or anything since it doesn't really matter.I don't think its a board(Motherboard) problem either since all he did was leave it on at night. I have reset the CMOS and my BIOS or SOMETHING called  AMI(American Megatrends) and I can't do much in the AMI actually I can't do anything. In the CMOS I can do quite a bit of things that you could do it the BIOS. I can't MAKE it to the boot menu, every time I press F12 like it says to nothing happens, I can only go to CMOS. I set it to where it will boot the Disk Drive first so that I may run Memtest 86 and so that worked fine and I have done like 8 tests so far(I have no idea when it ends but I am on like 100% on my 8th test) and it says  Pass complete and no errors. I cleaned the CPU fan and that didn't do the trick, same beeping it is short and continuous as you can see in the video below.

If you need any info that you think will help then let me know.

Help will be much appreciated, thanks

Solve : Suddenly drives no longer recognize a CD or a DVD?

Answer»

I have 4 CD/DVD DIVES (2 internal, 2 external) on a COMPUTER with XP as the OS.  All are recognize as present in My Computer, but none will recognize any typeof CD or DVD after years of doing so.  BTW: My "A" 3 1/2" floppy reconizes and opens floppy disks.

I have uninstalled and reinstall ed thwm through Device Manager, but no luck.  The only new/different item is I hooked up a tape drive backup device to the printer serial port and attempted to load drivers I had dowloaded from mfgr ste (didn't install).  Tape drive isn't recognized in "My Computer".

Help! Were these Colorado tape drive software or anything from HP by any chance ? ?
Years ago...back in the Win98 days they caused problems with knocking out Windows RECOGNISING CD drives...
At any rate remove the tape drive software and re-boot and see if this changes things. Also, in Device Manager are there any errors listed concerning your optical drives? Thanks, "guys".  It is a Sony Storstation I've had for a number of years.  I have not been able to locate the any software that was installed.  The tape drive was never recognized.  But, I have tought this was the source of my problem as it began right after I attempted to install drivers sent me by Sony (I cannot find my original CD for the tape backup).  Everything CHECKS out OK in Device Manager.

Any ideas where the drivers for the tape drive (serial printer port) would be?  Or, any other ideas? As for your drives, try this:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060
Method 2.Remove the external drives and re-boot twice.
Then go to Device Manager and right click both internal drives and select un-install.
Power down and unhook both internal drives.
Re-boot and power down.
Connect only the master internal CD drive and power up...Windows will automatically re-install it.
Check a few CD's to see all is good.

Repeat the process for each additional drive adding only ONE at a time.No luck with Patio's suggestion of physically removeing CD/DVD connections and uninstalling.  Still "sees' the drive acknowledges whether or not I have inserted a CD or a DVD, but will not read it.  Will say to insert disk or just gives me a blank page.

I haven't tried the Registery edit that was suggested yet.Even though "My Computer" dowesn't tell you anything is there and the "autorun" feature doesn't work when it is a DVD you can open and run the DVD from a DVD Player program.Try Broni's suggestion above first...it may be that the aborted tape drive install has juggled the drive letter designations that the program is used to seeing...
If so it may be as simple as re-installing the program. Thanks, but editing the Registery did not appear to do anything.  The drives know there is disk (change status indicator on My Computer to show CD or DVD is in it).  Like I said before, even though My Computer does't show it, the DVD player will play it.

Any more ides before I take the computer in to The Geeks or somewhere? My Computer will read information off 31/2 in my A drive and off USB memory sticks.Wild guess, but does same thing happen in Windows Explorer?Good question as I had not tried that.  But, yes it does the same thing. What happens when you click on your DVD, or CD drive in Windows Explorer? Anything shows up in right pane? Any error messages? With a left click I get a blank pane.  If I right click, I get the message to put a disk into the drive.

I'm not sure what CD you're referring to, but you don't need to waste your money for any CD to type in Swedish.
If you follow my link:
http://jonasmartinsson.50webs.com/keyboard/index.htm
and set up your Swedish keyboard from within Windows, you'll get an icon in your taskbar, which upon clicking on will change your keyboard layout from English to Swedish, and back.
While you at Swedish keyboard, it's just a matter of pressing extra "hotkey" to type Swedish letters.
There are pictures at the above link.

BTW, your English is fine, as far as "English as a second language" person like me can say. ohhhh i see, now i got it, thats great THANK YOU SO MUCH BRONI

Solve : INSTALLING SLAVE HD?

Answer»

Hi folks, got a problem trying to install a Maxtor 5T010H1 10g hd as a slave in my 4 year old box  - MB is a M754lmr all-in-one running at 700m with PCI components, a V90 modem and 360meg of RAM.
I CURRENTLY have installed a 10G hd with w98se and a 1g Seagate as a backup which is ALMOST full.
I got a hold of the Maxtor cheap from a crashed system and I understand that it has wxp pro installed. I checked Seagate's website and according to them when installed as a slave the drive needs no jumpers - however when I try to install it the BIOS recognises it as a slave and it spins up but does not show up in my system at all.  Would xp pro be blocking access somehow? and if so how do I format the thing when my system doesn't recognise it?
Any suggestions will be appreciated, and, oh yes, it is on the correct middle plug on the ribbon cable.
IanIf it was formatted as NTFS you will not be able to see it with Win98. You should remove and recreate the partitions on the XP drive, and then format as FAT32.  That's what I would like to do, but how? I tried INSTALLING it as a master and formatting it, but xp will not allow me to format a drive with an operating system on it from the same drive!DLoad the tools from Maxtor's site and use them to wipe the drive. Thanks for the help - downloaded Seagate's drive test software for DOS which also includes a utility which removes most of the data from the drive and replaces it with 000's - then ran FDISK to partition the drive to 1 partition at which point w98 recognised the thing and I could format it - having tried xp and taken a look at Vista I am sticking with w98se which is still DOS based, is reasonably stable and is predictable to work with xp with all those pop-ups and balloons would drive me nuts in no time - why the *censored* could Microsoft not has stuck with and developed w98 - the most stable and easily understandable version of windows?
Again thanks for the help which worked for me!
IanWin2K for me...
Glad to hear you got it solved and stop by ANYTIME ! !Thanks for posting back. We'll keep the lights on.

Also check to see if you bent any pins re-assembling.
If so DO NOT bend them back all at once.
Use a credit card and only bend them verry little at a time. Quote from: terrahowl on November 18, 2007, 09:10:11 PM

Graphics card is new, clean and screwed in snugly. i think i overdid it on the thermopaste (TP), i just took the processor out and cleaned up the extra TP. all fans are clean. case is clean.... Am I destined not to have a decent computer...

Down with pants, up with skirts!

ive got a couple questions...

1. by saying you "overdid the thermalpaste" can we assume that you installed an aftermarket cooling solution? if so, what make/model is the VGA cooler?
2. did you overclock your GPU? and if so, what software did you use/are using?

RAM - 3 Gig/s DDR2 Duel Channel  <  can't  have  "true'  dual mode  with  3 gigs... your running  3  sticks  thats  not  optimal*

better off with  2  1  gig  sticks  <  thats  dual  mode

double check  )after grounding yourself )  all the  mobo connections[ and believe it or not, all your case wires and  cords*]   and  the heatsink  / fan

if you don't have a driver issue going on,  it could be a failing  psu *

you would be surprised that just a loose cord on your puter  screws things  up
I found i had this issue today , i was checking my new mobos temperatures for anything out of the ordinary and found i was reaching extreme heat 70c , so i applied some more thermal compound and my computer was in fact freezing up , so i took the cpu to a work bench , and wiped of all the old thermal compound  ,  checked to see if everything was ok on the back *sometimes thermal paste seeps into the back* and after reapplying a very thin layer of the compound i was fine ..

Tony i retested everythin... but i got some more info. 5 minutes into an intense games of AoE3, my computer froze up again, and after 23ish minutes of WAITING it somewhat recovered. It went into VGA mode and Said that the Graphics Drivers have stopped working properly, and to restart to return them to normal. One of my techie friends said that the GPU and Duo core processor aren't getting enough power together, yet my Power Supply is 550 watt... thats my news for today...

*ahem* i believe these two questions remain unanswered...Since the info is coming in one piece at a time i'll WAIT awhile...I suspect you still have too much paste on there, which can be as bad as not enough. What is the make and model of that PSU? Roughly the price you paid?

Solve : Limit to how many hard drive disks at once??

Answer»

I recently tried to hook up my Ipod to my new computer running Vista, and just figured that is wasn't working because of a compatibility issue.  I found the update and installed it, and still, nothing.  Itunes would not recognize my Ipod, Windows would not safely remove my hardware, and my computer would not shut off or restart without me manually pressing the button.

On a whim, I disconnected an external hard drive connected to my computer and plugged in the Ipod.  It worked instantly!

I did some investigating and noticed that, when my external hard drive is plugged into the USB port, all of my media drives also disappear (SD, MS, SmartMedia, etc).  Is there some sort of limit to the amount of drives a computer could handle?  I'd appreciate any help.  Thanks! Is your external hard drive powered just by the USB connection or does it have an AC adapter that plugs into an electrical outlet?  Sounds like your system may not be able to provide enough juice , i.e. electrical power, to multiple USB devices.  yes my external hard drive has its own power source.  I've also tried to switch up the USB ports I plug into and same result.Front ports or Rear ? ?Well, to answer your question, a computer can only have as many drives as there are available letters.

A & B are usually reserved for FLOPPY devices.

That leaves you with C-Z, or 24 other options for physical hard drives, partitions, USB memory devices, OPTICAL drives, virtual drives, etc.

...provided you can supply the needed power and connections for all those drives...

If you don't have a total of 24 of those devices, then you haven't reached your limit. If you have, you've got way too much plugged in.

But it sounds to me like Soybean said. Sounds like your drive is pulling too much power causing other things to shut off.I don't have 24 devices, but I do have 10 (2 internal hard drives, an external, a DVD drive, an Ipod (when it works), and then 5 media drives that came pre installed on the PC).

The first time I had a problem, I was using a front USB port for both devices, but have since tried every combination and still nothing.

When I get home from work, I am going to try to uninstall and reinstall Itunes, and see if that sparks anything. What exactly are the 5 Media drives ? ?
What brand PSU is in that machine and what is the wattage info ? ? Quote from: patio on November 29, 2007, 07:48:19 AM

What exactly are the 5 Media drives ? ?
What brand PSU is in that machine and what is the wattage info ? ?

Sorry, they are Media devices, not drives.  I'm at work and I don't remember OFFHAND, but here is the computer I recently bought:

Gateway - E2140 Desktop
Model: GT5620 SKU: 8540251

and I've since added a 80 GB WD Internal Hard drive and I have a 200 GB External hard drive (I forget the brand).  And just for fun, my Ipod is a 60 GB Video.

Thanks again for any help! The media devices he's refering to are most likely one item. Most likely it's similar to a computer I was working on the other day which had a multi-card reader with each type of card requiring a drive letter, whether it's in USE or not.

I still say it sounds like a power problem.

Degenerex, have you tried the USB ports in the back of the system? Also, try unplugging some unneeded USB devices and see if it will work then.

Could you list everything that is plugged into a USB port and how it is powered? (especially the hard drive)

Also, how many USB ports to do you have and where are they located on the system? (don't forget to check the back, keyboard, etc.)

One solution might be a powered USB hub (one that comes with an adapter to provide extra power when the system doesn't provide enough). But before you rush out and buy one, let's LOOK at what your current configuration is. There might be a way to sort this out and save you some money.ok, just to answer a previous question my computer has 6 USB ports (3 sets of 2).  2 in the back, and one in the front.  I've tried every combination of plugging the ipod and external HD in, so I really don't think this is a power issue.

I have realized that, as soon as I plug in my external HD, it causes all of the "devices" to disappear from my computer.  And when I plug in my Ipod, it recognizes it as a device, so this probably has something to do with the problem.  Is there any way I could make windows recognize the ipod as a drive so it doesn't make it vanish?  it now appears my girlfriend has bought me the new 160 GB ipod for christmas so I really need to figure this out now!  It'll be hard to fake excitement opening a gift I won't be able to use!Like quaxo, I still think this may be a power problem.  And, one solution may be a USB controller card such as  SYBA PCI USB 2.0 4+1 shared port controller card Model SD-VIA-5U.  This card installs in a PCI slot and adds 4 USB ports to the back of your computer.

Solve : Motherboard upgrade?

Answer»

We suffered the 'emachines breakdown', both the power supply and motherboard.  Trying to 'not pay for a new computer'.  Have upgraded to a better power supply, but need info on a motherboard.  Do we simply need to BUY the same Imperial 2003-----or is there a better item for the same money?  How do we compare different COMPANIES #s, to find a suitable replacement?Replacing a motherboard is a tricky business. If the chip sets don't match, then your hard disk won't boot and you'll have no option but to re-install windows. You also need to make sure that your CPU, RAM and video card will fit into your new board and also that your new board will fit into your case.

Take a look at your existing board, can you see a SERIAL number, also what is printed on the large chips? Do you know your CPU socket size?nealf,

nickc1976 pretty much summed it up. i would actually suggest to take it to a tech, unless you are comfortable with removing your CPU and correctly PLUGGING in all of the connectors GOING into the motherboard. And some machines (Dell's in particular) have different layouts than "build your own" so the slots, I/O connectors will not line up and it will never work correctly, if at all.

I would never support getting another known defcective product like an eMachine special. I agree it may be time for the Geek Squad or some other tech. to do the surgery.

Solve : new build and no power??

Answer»

I got some new parts the other day (eg7650 cpu, gigabyte ga p35 ds3l mobo, corsair 620hx psu) and today I WENT about removing my old mobo/psu/gpu etc. Installed everything, seemed to go smoothly, no issues getting anything in there and connected. Replaced the cover, got my monitor/mouse/keyboard plugged in, plug in the power supply, turn it on, and hit the power button.
Nothing.
Turn it off, unplug, open it back up, check the connections, everything looks fine so I try switching the power/hdd/power led wires to see if i had them the wrong direction, close it up and try it again and same thing.
As far as I can tell all my connections are good but I can't get it to start up, I don't get any response whatsoever, does anyone have any ideas?

Ok, a little confused. Your subject says no power, but you said you turned it on and then turned it off.

Did something turn on when you pushed the power button?

If the computer sounds like it's starting to turn on (the PSU fan activates, etc.) but you only get a black screen, you most likely need to reformat. When you change motherboards, you change chipsets. Most of the time these are not cross-compatible with other motherboards and a reformat of the HARD drive is required.Sorry for the confusion, no, it didn't turn on at all, I meant that I turned off the power switch on the psu to safely unplug it. I don't THINK the led on the board even lit up.
When I hit the power button the fan didn't even start to spin, there was literally no response at all from the computer.Ahhh ok... I see.

Double check all the power cables. Make sure they're all on and connected properly. Sounds to me like the PSU might be defective though.Okay, that's the same response I got from some other PEOPLE. First thing tomorrow I'll check all my wiring again and see what else I can find.make sure the connections going out from the power supply are secure. i have the exact same PSU and i dont know about you, but i kinda had to fight to get mine to clip in correctly.

PROTIP: make sure the recepticle that you are plugged into has power before assuming its the PSU. it may just be as simple as a blown breaker. OK well....

See when ever IVE changed a motherboard from computer to computer , Ive never ever ever ever , got power straight away . odd thing happened to me today , i plugged everything in , no power , then i hit the reset button and bingo power , you got to move wires about and all that , try booting with only 1 stick or memory , take out your gpu , make sure if you have any LED lights there all in the correct places on the motherboard ......

Is it a CRT or LCD?

To start with, could you take a screen shot and post it?Restart in Safe Mode. Only default video driver will be loaded. How is your monitor there?

It could be the video card, but more often than not it's the monitor.

-=EDIT=-

Is that other computer conveniently near by? Can you try its monitor on your computer and see if you still have the same problem? That would most likely answer to whether or not it's the monitor or card. Quote

Solve : identify odd sized power supply?

Answer»

The PSU went out on my old desktop. Son built up the system then took off to Bermuda for an extended vacation. Don't know the brand but the model number on the PSU is WT300U. Can ANYONE identify the make so I can search for a replacement? There are basically only 2 sizes when it comes to PSU's...ATX and Mini ATX.
If in doubt either measure it and or take it with you when CHOOSING a replacement. There are great advantages in living on a mountain top in a very rural area but shopping is not one of them. I will have to order on line, returning wrong parts means a 100 mile round trip to the nearest UPS office.  I recently installed a new power supply in a retired friend's old HP and it was a special part, it  had to be ordered from HP, an old  (non sata capable) 188 watt PSU that cost $85. I had a computer shop in a neighboring community check it out and do the ordering. Nothing in their shop would fit. The PSU in my desktop is rated at 300watts but is very small. I have a new 450 watt supply but the access holes do not match the desktop case. I'm afraid that cutting new access holes in the case would spray metal CHIPS into the circuits. Based on your reply I'll order a mini and hope for the best. What is the make/model/wattage of the PSU. It will be listed on it. It will probably say ATX on it somewhere as well, but you need to make sure. If it is not a name brand machine (HP, Compaq, etc.) there probably will not be an ISSUE

Nothing turned up on Google with the info provided. Can you take a picture?

I tried installing it again from their website but it still did not show up... My graphic card has HDMI connection on which I think am supposed to connect speakers but my speakers use regular jacks to connect... Any help WOULD be great... ThanxHDMI (digital) jacks are for connecting your video card to home theater system.

Solve : No sound to TV from HDMI Cable - HELP!?

Answer»

Hi, I have recently purchased a q-waves wireless quicklink thing.  The main unit plugs into the TV by HDMI and I have a USB sender in my laptop.  I can see the picture, but the sound still comes through my laptop.  I have been told by qwaves support the following:

"If you could go to the speaker icon which is situated bottom right hand
corner of the system tray then right click the icon and select playback
devices which should show "USB PnP device" as well as your main laptop
speakers. You will need to select this device and press the "set default"
button which will then give a green tick next to "USB PnP Sound Device".

The sound should then be heard through the TV speakers"

The thing is, I don't have the option of USB PnP Sound Device, and I have it set to show hidden devices etc.

I  am running windows 7 and have realtek sound card, and updated all the drivers.  I am really stuck and have looked all over the internet for a solution, but have not found one.

Really hoping someone here may be able to HELP me.  I'm not completely clueless when it comes to computers and this is really frustraighting me!!

Please Help!

Thanks

LindseyDid you complete the driver install CD from the device? Check the Realtek PROPERTIES on your display and look on Advanced tab. To display volume icon on system tray, right-click task bar and choose Properties. Choose Customize and look for volume icon and change to only show notification - ok. Follow then if the customer support has given the right suggestion from there. Thanks for the reply, I have changed this and it still does not work, any other ideas??Given this "q-waves wireless quicklink" is not appearing in your options window when right clicking on the speaker icon SEEMS to me that in spite of what you THINK the software for the device is NOT installed. Just in case the drivers for the device that may have been on the cd disc that you installed from are not appropriate for the win 7 O/S you might want to check on the manufacturers site for the most current drivers for the "quicklink" product. truenorthHi, I have installed the drivers from the CD and from the official page and reinstalled again and the same for my sound card??TRY another computer. Install the software and plug it in to see if you can find the "USB PnP sound device" in the sound menu. This should rule out if its your computer or the device...

Solve : Broken HDD on laptop??

Answer»

Hello. I have a laptop with the following spec:

IBM Thinkpad 390E
Celeron Processor, 366 MHz

It was running Windows 2000. I switched it on after months, perhaps even a year (time flies!) And it was slow. But it was slow anyway and I had been meaning to downgrade to Windows 98. Seeing as it was slow I thought I would downgrade to Windows 98 sooner rather than later.

I wiped the hard drive USING the free version of Kill Disk (www.killdisk.com). I couldn't install Windows 98 because the hard drive was not FAT 32. I booted using a Windows 98 boot disk in order to set the partitions with fdisk. This must have taken about eight HOURS. When I came to format the hard drive the computer said

Quote

Format not supported on drive C:
Format terminated.

So I thought I would check if the partitions are in place with fdisk but it said:

Quote
No fixed disks present

My question is whether the hard drive is broken and beyond repair or whether it is just that the computer is not recognising it. There is nothing rattling inside so it is not loose. If the computer is repairable I would appreciate some guidance about how I can do it.

Thanks in advance for any help.
If it sat that long try this...
REMOVE the hold down panel for the drive.
Carefully remove the drive and clean the contacts with a QTip and rubbing alcohol...allow some drying time, more is better.
Do the same for the battery and its contacts as well ( since you have the alcohol handy )
Replace the drive, power up and watch the BIOS screen to see if the hard drive is detected...if so you should be good to go.
If not check the manual and see what's involved in replacing the CMOS battery which may also have gone dead.

You may have to run FDisk and format over again as well. Thanks for your help patio. I have been unable to respond until now.

I changed the clock battery and the BIOS clock is now keeping the time. I could run FDISK but I was not ready to go through with everything so I left it till later. But later the HDD was not recognised in KILLDISK and I could not run FDISK because no fixed disks were recognised.

I removed the HDD but I could not clean the contacts because they were concealed, rather LIKE the contacts in the socket of a parallel cable. I gave a blow instead. It did not make any difference. The hard disk is still not recognised.

Any other suggestions?

By the way, the hard disk makes a strange NOISE and I have recorded it. The link to the audio file is as follows:
www.ha.talktalk.net/IBM390E_hdd.WMA

That is the click of Death as it's commonly referred to...the read-write heads are constantly searching for the park spot to get started from and are having no luck.

The drive is dead.

We have on occasion held Memorial services for failing hardware here if needed.
Let us know...Ewww... one of the worst sounds you can get from a computer. Patio is right, that drive has seen the end of it's days.

I just did some searching, your hard drive can be replaced, but something about that particular model of laptop only supports up to 8GB hard drives. I'm not even sure you can get one that small anymore.

That might be inaccurate information though. I'd check with IBM (if they'll help you at this point) and see.thanks, i appreciate it. i didn't even get much use out of that laptop...it was just sitting around...and when i needed it....

moments silence

what could have been the cause? age? or would it have had anything to do with the CMOS battery running out?Nope . The battery would'nt cause this.

Solve : unwanted POP created when editing a sound wave?

Answer»

I recorded my kids at school reading a play, and I'm editing it. Each time I split the track to make a change, I create a POP. If I simply split the recorded track and separate the blocks, leaving nothing but empty silence between, and then replay it, I have an irritating POP before and after the silence--meaning, I think, that this isn't about zero crossings. Wondering about DC offset, I (also) checked the appropriate box to adjust for that--no luck. I'm using Windows ME and Cool Edit. A FRIEND with XP and Cool Edit doesn't create any unwanted sound when he takes the same steps. I'm completely in the dark, but I'm wondering if his Sound Blaster Live sound CARD  makes the difference. Can anyone SHED some light on all this? We'll have a great radio play when I FIND a way to AVOID creating the problem as I edit.I would try a different sound editing software. Hi all

Windows NT, although not based on DOS, provides a command-line interface similar to MS-DOS's character-mode interface.

This command line is provided by a native executable, cmd.exe. Many command-line applications for Windows are incorrectly referred to as DOS applications, when actually they are full Windows applications which use the console for their output rather than a graphical interface, and cannot be run under any version of MS-DOS.

Computer is extremely slow.  Takes about 15 min. to log on, takes forever to go from place to place.
I have crashed it a few times and with the help of Dell have restored it. I would like to tackle this myself since it's becoming a way of life.

So, we have a recurring problem here, it sounds like.  Am I RIGHT?  I have the impression you may picking up some nasties on the Internet and that's what clogging up your computer.

Do you keep a firewall enabled?  Do you normally have an anti-virus program installed?  What about spyware removal tools?  What about periodic disk cleanup and registry cleaning and disk defragmentation?  Are you doing those things?Due to the extreme slowness you're experiencing, yes, I'd suggest doing that.  Of course, this will erase everything now on the drive.  So, backup what you want to keep, before proceeding with this, if possible.

If you do a clean install and experience poor performance right away, I suggest you download memtest and run it to test your memory.  If software issues are not causing your problem, you apparently have hardware issues.  So, a memory test may be well worth the time.  Another test would be to remove your old memory and try running it with only the new 512MB module you bought. There's also the possibility you added the wrong type of RAM...enter the machine's service tag # at Dell's site and check their recommended type of RAM with the specs of the 512 stick.
I agree with soybean nonetheless...a clean install is a good idea at this point.

Collect all your drivers beforehand as well and as suggested backup any data you may need as it will all be gone.Your device drivers; video, LAN, sound, USB, etc.  Drivers are small programs that need to be installed for these DEVICES to work properly.

Do you have a Recovery CD, maybe several CDs, that came with your computer?  If so, and if you've MADE no hardware changes other than the memory, all your drivers should be on one of those CDs.  In that case, you won't need to worry about collecting them from other sources. Will your CD drive play music CDs and recognized non-Dell software CDs?  another option that is often overlooked is disk cleanup. First go to system restore and attempt to restore to a point before the slow down started. If this doesn't help use disk cleanup and delete all unnecessary files. You will probably have many temp intenet files you don't need. NEXT select the "other options" tab and delete old backup points. You have already determined they are of no use. Here you also  have the option to delete programs you no longer use, if relevent.  After deleting hundreds or thousands of temp internet files you will need another defrag. I just did same with a similar computer and things now work better. I would suggest downloading a free copy of ad-aware, mine just picked up 11 items a scan by norton internet security missed.
