Solve : Cleaning Your Computer, and Electricity?

Answer»

I cleaning my computer soon, and I need to know what dangers I should watch out for most notably the dangers of frying my own computer because of the electricity in my body or some sort.

Are there any precautions I  could take before handeling some of my computer parts, an cleaning them.Stay grounded, static electricity is not your friend when dealing with computers in any MANNER, ANYTIME you touch any component of your computer, be double sure to ground yourself by touching something like a piece of metal to discharge any static electricity you may have generated.Just curious what tools/cleaners you plan on using?Hopefully not a vaccuum... as previously stated, you should ground yourself before handling any components (you can ground yourself by touching the computer chassis when its still plugged in, but not powered on.) i honestly dont worry too much about static electricity as most static-sensitive components are shielded. if you are planning on removing components, it is wise to handle them by grabbing the side edges, kind of how one would handle a CD.

for dusting the computer, use compressed air, and NOT a vaccuum just as patio stated.

an added NOTE, if you are removing cables, make sure that you label them so you can hook them up correctly when you put it back together.I am for sure not using a vaccuum I'm not that bad with computers, however I will be removing some parts. My floor is a hardwood flooring. Would there be any electricity conducted by my foot while I walk on my floor.you are worrying way too much about static electricity. you will not fry a component just by touching it. as i stated before, most static sensitive parts are shielded.Do not remove the CPU Central Processing Unit.  They can cost about 80 dollars for a new one.  Make sure if you UNPLUG something to take not where it was pluged into and which way it went Quote from: squall_01 on December 12, 2007, 10:53:36 AM

he does not need to remove the CPU unless he is replacing it, also, they can cost anywheres from $5 to $1000.

Solve : Replacement skt 939 mobo needed?

Answer»

Hi,

I think my mobo has gone , a Gigabyte GA-K8NXP-9 NF4 Ultra, ATX Socket 939 and I'm looking for a replacement.

I need to reuse my existing AMD 64 x 2 CPU and my DDR memory , so I can't just throw the whole darn thang away.

Cheers and hello  Here are 7 socket 939 motherboards.  I did not take time to verify memory type.  Thanks for those soybean, and the Jetway looked reasonable.  Unfortunately, I'm in the UK currently and Newegg don't ship internationally, as far as I'm aware. You're right.  Newegg.com does not ship internationally.  I'm not familiar with online sellers and retailers in the UK, but I'd bet you can find some if you do some searching.  Some of the members of this forum are in the UK, so they may be able to suggest sources there.I've looked around UK sites but I can't find a Gigabyte GA-K8NXP-9 NF4 Ultra, ATX Socket 939 .  If anybody Stateside could locate one, with an international shipper, I'll definitely put you on my christmas card list.  I just sent a PM (Private Message) to a forum member who lives in the UK.  His forum name is Calum.  I gave him the link to this discussion.

You might take a look at ebay.  And, do you absolutely need that particular motherboard or would some other socket 939 board also be ACCEPTABLE?Other than Ebay, I am unable to find that exact motherboard for sale anywhere in the UK.
If another socket 939 board is acceptable, there are a fair few retailers who still stock them.
For example, Aria and Amazon have several models in stock.
Some other retailers do have some socket 939 boards, however they're not as good as your current one in terms of features. Thanks very much for that information, gentlemen, and I'll pursue a different board just as soon as I am certain that my existing one is dead.

If it is simply the CPU fan which has failed would that cause the mobo to shut down the PSU ?   My PSU works fine when it's disconnected from the mobo . That's what led me to believe that the mobo was at fault.

Can I test the CPU fan without stripping it out ? A failing fan will indeed shut the system down to protect itself.
Consult your manual on removal instructions or the CPU manuf. manual.
Then take the fan to a parts retailer in your area to match it up for a replacement.
Finally and important travel to Arctic Silver's website for proper instructions on re-applying thermal paste.

Hopefully a $10.00 new fan will get you back up and running...It's actually the stock AMD fan , which has been brilliant.  It came supplied with its own thermal coating which I cannot fault.

Can you tell me, if it was simply CPU fan failure, would the mobo show any sign of booting up before shutting down or would it just be lifeless, like mine ?

Also, if I can somehow contrive to apply the correct DC voltage to the CPU fan in situ, would that be an adequate test to see if it is faulty ?   I can easily disconnect it from the mobo pins, but I would need to OBTAIN a similar mobo fitting and the means to apply the voltage. What problems were you having that lead to posting your question here?

Have you ever opened your computer case and observed what the CPU does when you turn the power on?  If not, try it.  Does the fan run for a few seconds and then stop, or not run at all?  Hi soybean, here's exactly what happened;

I switched on and the fan controller lights came up, as usual, but the screen was completely blank.
I jiggled all external connections to no AVAIL.
I then attempted to switch off via the reset button but nothing happened. The fan controller lights stayed up.
I then hit the on/off switch, also to no effect and so I pulled the plug.
When I reconnected the power and hit the on/off switch again there was nothing, not even the fan controller lights.

I took the panels off and reseated all INTERNAL connections, attempted to power up but nothing came to life.
Then I tested all PSU outlets and all were dead.
When I removed the PSU from the case and tested it with a PSU tester and voltmeter it checked out fine. It ceases to function when it is connected to the mobo.

Now, I've just managed to find a replacement, a KN8 PRO SLi, which differs from mine by just one PCI-E socket, but I really should try to discover what happened before I fit it , so any help gratefully appreciated.

Many thanks to the guys who PMd me with mobo sources.A PSU tester does not place the PSU under load...i'd suspect the PSU before i would buy a new MBoard.Well, I've got a new PSU, I've got a new mobo, I'm halfway to building a new machine, damit.   Lol.

Now it's been suggested that my CPU might have blown, so I'm no better off than I was three days ago.   The answer SEEMS to be something like this, I'm told, although it looks like just a jig to me;
http://www.driverheaven.net/reviews/Tech%20Work%20Station/

Can anybody tell me if they're available in the UK ? patio;

Hat off to you, patio, you were right.    I was convinced that the PSU tester would give me an accurate reading on the PSU's health, but it doesn't.   I plugged in the new PSU and the machine came back to life.   Thanks for that.  I wouldn't have even bothered to try it if you hadn't mentioned it.

So, now I have a spare 939 pin motherboard just in case my original does blow.  Hey, I might as well get a spare 939 pin CPU as well , just in case, while they're available and dirt cheap.

All's well that ends well.  Thanks to all.

Solve : LCD monitor, is it dead?

Answer»

Hi
Have a dell LCD monitor that for no apparent reason just goes off after about 2 hours.

The GREEN power light stays on, but it’s just LIKE the power plug has been pulled, if you switch the monitor off and back on it will work for a minute or so then switches off again.

Any ideas gratefully received.

Try it on a different computer. Also, it might be overheating since you say it turns off after a while. As Soviet Genius said, it might be overheating. I've also seen monitors do this when they're coming up on their last days. How old is the LCD you're having a problem with?Check your settings in Control Panel/Power Management...Hi All

Thanks for the speedy replies.
The monitor has been on 3 computers with same fault, it’s nearly two years old.
I also think it’s a heat problem, have had the back off no dust inside, does it have a PSU built in, can it be changed, and is it WORTH having repaired.

Monitors are not easily repaired. When they are, it's not always cheap either. Check around locally, there might be a place that can fix it, or can TELL you where to get it fixed.Check your settings.  Sometimes if you dont use a pc a while and you leave the monitor on,  it will go blank.  If you dont see a screen saver or anything before it goes off.  You mite have to get a new one.

Solve : Need to recover data from my broken hard drive!!!??

Answer»

I know and understand that once a hard drive crashes it can be very hard to recover the data...what my problem is that when i decided to wipe out my computer and install a fresh windows i backed up all my data onto a slave hard drive that i had no idea was going bad....then when i get everyting up and running and when i hook up the slave hard drive and during the boot the slave hard drive is making clicking sounds (ouch) so i knew then and there i was going to have problems....then windows boots and it had not detected it, then i try to do the add hardware THING..then it will just take forever to detect it....so far it hasnt detected anything yet...as its checking for new hardware the slave drive will make the clicking sound so i know theres some SORT of comunication.....now what i would LIKE to know is if there is any sort of recovery software that i can get my stuff off of the hard drive.
I guess the only thing you can do is to ask the manufacturer of the unit to retrieve the information for you.  Sounds likes the head is not functioning properly.  The manufacturer could test the disk out and read it.  But it is going to cost you.Never tried it...  You'll have to make up your own mind as to WHETHER it applies to your case.  Does a hard drive click because its components have gone bad or because it's repeatedly trying to get a successful read from the disk surface (for the boot records?).  Hey, I don't know...

Solve : Motherboard and Cpu compatabilty?

I i wish to buy a new Cpu , i need to know if the new Cpu will fit ONTO my motherboard , is there a way to find out the make and model of my motherboard and the cpu i have. alo need to know about pin number on the cpu and mboard.
thanks

Aslo how can i find out how much ram my mboard will hold in MBytes , i have 3 SLOT for ramDownload EVEREST FREE Edition and run it to get an extensive report on your system.I just built my own computer and it helped me a lot to determine at first the motherboard that I wanted. For example, I CHOSE the Intel® Desktop Board DP965LT so it's easy to guess that an Intel processor will fit for sure with this board. If you look at the specifications of any motherboard it should indicate which processors may or may not fit. Ram type and other CHARACTERISTICS appear indicated as well. Solve : Backup Solutions (CDP - Continous Data Protection)?

Answer»

We are currently backing up over 400 gigs of data to disk. I have been looking into alternative BACKUP systems that dont require tapes. I really would like a *CDP system but after intial quotes show that for my system I would need to spend over 30K for the appliances and needed software, I figured I would just ask if anyone has a cheaper alternative to a CDP style system.

*Please just do a GOOGLE search for continous data protection to understand it.SyncBack...
I only use the Free solution but the paid version is built for enterprise networks from what i gather...
Another one to investigate would be Acronis TRUE Image Server Edition...not CHEAP but it may be worth it for your needs.I APPRECIATE it, I am looking into both and am literally talking to Acronis. Still wondering if anyone has/used a CDP system and if so, what were their thoughts.

Solve : Not getting sound out of my DVDs?

Answer»

Hi everyone,

I am kind of frustrated beacuse I've been digging EVERYWHERE and I don't find an answer. I can't get any sound when I play any of my dvds. I am currently using a Intel Desktop Board DP965LT, Intel Core 2 Duo Processor 2.2 Ghz, I am running Win XP Professional SP2 and I usually play my music and videos with Win Media Player 11. I get sound from all my compact discs, from any mp3 files and videos but whenever I try play a DVD the images go on WITHOUT sound at all. My DVD unit is a Lite On LH-20A1P and I have installed the drivers of my motherboard. I found a firmware update for my DVD unit, but just in case it does not work, which could be the reason of this issue? Any suggestions, will be truly appreciated. Are you playing your CD's from the DVD drive. If so this is not the solution. Most CDRoms/DVD drives should have an audio cable that goes from your DVD drive to your Sound Card. If you are missing this cable you will need to refer the install manual for instructions. Please note that some dont need this cable but I have found most do. Quote from: Chrisxs5 on December 10, 2007, 02:13:22 PM

Solve : Maxtor Slave Harddrive?

Answer»

Hi im having some problems with my Maxtor Harddrive, i just took it out of my old computer which wasn't working cant REMEMBER the problem but im pretty sure the harddrive is fine it was running Windows XP and worked like a charm,

but now i just bought my mates computer also running Windows XP with all the internal components such as RAM Harddrive etc, now i just plugged in my old Maxtor Harddrive and its saying that its found it the safe tool removal picture in the task bar and recognized it but the computer cant find it, what i mean is in My Computer i cant find my harddrive can some please help

Its a Maxtor 4RO8OLO and the master one is ST380011A what EVER that is and they both seem to work find but i cant find it what could be the problem thanks

was the maxtor drive that you pulled out from your old comp the master harddrive?yes homer yes it wasthen you will probably need to reformat it.

you should be able to see the drive in disk management.

control panel > administrative tools > computer management > disk management (under storage)

from here you can format it to be a slave drive.but doesnt formattin it mean i lose all my data cause thats the only reason i want ityes it does mean that you lose all your data.

BTW did you correctly set the jumper on the maxtor harddrive?and yes its set like

oo==o
oo    o

like that i THINK or something similar and the harddrive says that this is slave
is there no driver i can install or something or anyway i can get the data off this harddrive onto another one and set that to slave?

i just really want the data off that harddrive
i am sorry, but i cannot help you with data recovery as i am not very educated in it. you may wish to start a thread on it under the "microsoft windows" section, or wait until someone who can help you here comes along.Does anyone know if i were to change the Maxtor to master whether that would work?Leave it jumpered as slave...
is it connected to the middle connector on the ribbon cable ? ?
is the master HDD jumpered to master w/slave present ? ?
is the master on the end connector of the ribbon cable ? ?

After checking all this and connecting things properly power up and see if it is recognised ...if it is copy/burn whatever data you need.
If it isn't right click My Computer and select Manage.
From there go to Disk Management.
Right click the Maxtor and select Properties and report back with everything it says...Try it with no jumpers installed - most Maxtor [now seagate] hd's run as slave with no jumpers - checked their website and cannot find that hd listed - have you got the right #s ? ok taking both your comments into acount

ok ive took out the jumper so its on slave and yes thats the only code thing i get on my HDD
When you say ribbon cable i assume you mean the grey thing(my techincal terms are sh*t) th ones labbled things like MoBo Slave and Master if so yes...

Ive not checked and didnt know that the other HDD has/may has a setting for master with slave but the bois see my harddrive as secondary slave, and yes the ribon cable is set up correctly nothing changed except pluggin in the slave

This HD is old and is only an 80giger

Its quite hard for me to check now as its very late and i dont have any tools

My master HD is a ST380011A says Disk Manager so im not sure what that is will that have the jumper SETTINGS W/ Slave

Wow its actually a Seagate/Maxtor while the slave is a Maxtor the Master is a Seagate :SLet us know when you've FINISHED investigating how the jumpers are set...

Solve : Will not complete Boot after Ps Replaced?

Answer»

I just replaced the PS in my kid's PC. It was working fine then she noticed a burning smell and found several components fried in the PS. I just replaced the PS. Hooked everything up and on power-up I get:

A Single Beep which I assume is the self-test being COMPLETED ok for the Mother Board

Then I get the next screen in the boot sequence that shows RAM installed. 2GB, CPU (Athlon 64)
and a norice giving me the choice to enter Bios Setup (press DELETE) or go to the Boot Setup (Press F11),

instead of continuing with the initall boot it freezes at this point. Pressing any key does nothing.

All fans are running

I cannot feet the  HD running but the LED on the front of the case that is supposed to show HD activity is on.

I am assuming a mother board problem either caused the PS to fail or the failure of the PS cratered something on the MB.

Anyone have any other items to check or Ideas?

Thanks in Advance

The beep codes mean different things depending on the MB manufacturer....u might want to go to the manufacturers web site and look it up...Good Luck!A burning smell is never a good sign...
What brand PSU /'s have you swapped in there ? ?
What HAPPENED that you needed to originally replace the PSU ? ?

Check the capacitors on the MBoard...they look like little tiny towers with an X in the center...are any of them bulging and or leaking ? ?

You may be able to salvage things here or you may have caused some serious damage.
Post back with as much info as you can...It is a Macron Power Technology MPT 350 - but I am going to check all the voltage outputs in my avionics SHOP tomorrow

The burning smell came from the PS and a couple 470uf filter caps and a resistor on the 115V AC look like they were pooched its near the 115VAC INPUT portion - possibly part of the input vs the 5VDC output side- can't tell w/o a schematic.

Haven't had a chance yet to look for any obvious damage to the MB but the single beep on the initial boot is the same as a another functioning PC so I am guessing that it means the self test is ok.

I plan to disconnect all peripherals and see if the boot sequence will continue on the chance that a drive or something is pulling a voltage or databuss down.

Any other ideas would be welcome.

So the MBoard capacitors are OK then ? ?
What brand PSU is this ? ?Something similar to this happened to me not too LONG ago. My current setup seemed to be tearing up PSU's left and right, I had to replace the PSU three times in a span of a couple months to figure out what was going on, I will give you my story in hopes that it will help you. The first time it happened, my computer would shut down randomly, just completely turn off, I didn't realize this was a result of a failing PSU. The first time it turned out that with the failing PSU, it took my Video Card down with it, so I had to replace both and all was fine, this was a 600W replaced with a new 600W generic PSU. Of course as luck would have it, the same thing happened again, this time, I was fortunate enough to not loose any of my other components, just the PSU. I finally got fed up after it happening again, so I replaced it with a bit higher quality 680W PSU, I have never had a problem since.

What I'm thinking is that something may be sucking a large amount of power from your PSU and burning it out, you might have lost your Video Card along with it, as you hear a one beep, and the fans are running, which means everything else should be ok. I would suggest you find another computer with the same Video Card slot and test it in that, if that computer doesn't start up, then it is most likely your video card that may be stopping you from booting.I finally had a chance to dig into it today and found that the IDE HD is defunct. It was dragging down the IDE line from the MB and stopping the boot process. AS soon as I disconnected the cable it went to the Bios boot level. Plugging a spare HD in allowed it to recognize the HD. Tomorrow I start rebuilding a new SATA drive on it .

Thanks for all the suggestions
 Good job...
Make an investment into a decent PSU looking ahead to the next upgrade.

what's the differences? Can my motherboard support it?
http://www.biostar.com.tw/app/en-us/mb/content.php?S_ID=245
how to DETERMINE either i can use it or not?what should i check? gddr is memory specifically made to handle the demands of graphics processing, it is isolated to the video card and therefore motherboard support is not an issue. gddr 2,3,4 are just different versions, each faster and more efficient then the last.

as for your motherboard, i would HIGHLY recommend a new one as that one is quite old and will be unable to support any newer graphics cards.that's mean my motherboard only support GRAPHIC card ddr1??isn't it?

that's mean my motherboard only support graphic card ddr1??isn't it?

it MEANS your motherboard can only support PCI and AGP video cards, it cannot support the newer PCIe cards. as i stated before the type of memory on the video card is isolated from the motherboard, therefore motherboard support is not an issue.

Quote
what are the best graphic card that i can have?
your choices are very slim. your motherboard can only support AGP X4, it is compatible with AGP X8 video cards, however, the SPEED of the video card will be substantially reduced. i cant seem to find any AGP X4 video cards, all the ones i can find are all AGP X8.

Solve : Unable to record sound?

Answer»

I have an ASUS M2N2 Sli Deluxe Motherboard that came with a SoundMax soundcard.

Using Sound Recorder or other recording software, I can record from a microphone or though the Line-in jack, but I cannot record from the CD player or from the Stereo Mix.

In practical terms, this means that, if I play a MIDI music file on the computer, and try to record it with some digital audio software, I get nothing. I could probably route a CABLE from the sound card output jack to the line-in jack, but the whole point of the "Stereo Mix" recording option is you don't have to do that kind of thing.

All the drivers are WORKING properly and I have made sure that nothing is accidentally muted.

Any ideas?I haven't try that way. I used Sonar 6 to do it for me. After I mixed my MIDI to the way I want then I record each TRACK and export them into audio. I used Easy CD Creator 7 burn it into my cd. You can use WMP 9 burn into cd too.  Hope these Links help:

http://midconverter.com/convert-midi-to-mp3.shtml

A program that does the converting MIDI to MP3. I haven't try yet. I'm pretty sure a trial version will only allow you to convert maximum 25% of your MIDI.

http://convert-midi.com/midi-to-mp3.shtmli HIGHLY recommend getting a new sound card. many people, including me, have had issues with the soundmax card.

Solve : What is faster??

Answer»

After looking into my current motherboard's specs, I found that the PCIe slot my Geforce 8600 GTS is on only runs at 4x, which was quite disappointing as it was mislabeled as running at 16x when I purchased it. Anyway, I have rectified the problem, buy purchasing an Nvidia 680i Intel board, and can't WAIT to try it out (haven't received it yet) my QUESTION is this: Will AGP 8x, run faster than PCIe 4x? And one more THING, since my current video card is running at PCIe 4x, will it adapt to the new 16x slot and run at 16x? As I looked all over on the box the video card came in, and it just tells me that it requires a PCIe compliant motherboard, nothing else.YES, it should be quite a bit faster.

And no, you can't put a PCIe card in an AGP slot.

Good luck.

P.S. Do you have a socket LGA 775 processor to go along with the motherboard?Ohh, I do realize that it is impossible to put a PICe card in an AGP slot, my question may have been a bit confusing, I was asking merely gauge how much of a performance increase I COULD expect jumping from PCIe 4x to PCIe 16x. The reason I posed the question was because I heard that AGP 8x has more memory bandwidth then say a PCIe card running at PCIe 4x. And yes, I do have an LGA775 Processor, though not a very good one, a P4 3.2 GHZ with HT.It should be a lot faster. Although the 8600 GTS is not the most powerful card.

I reccomend you buy the E2160 processor and the 8800 GT graphics card, along with the new board.Just a bit of info from my experience. I had a X850 XT PE AGP and upgraded to PCI-E with an older 6800 ULTRA ( an upgrade, but a downgrade). The less powerful PCI-E card way out performed the more powerful AGP card. I wasted my money on the AGP card, I bought it two years ago for like 300ish. I wish I had bought a new motherboard and a PCI-E card back then. Hope this helps.......

you DECIDE.

if you do go through with overclocking it, i WOULD highly RECOMMEND an AFTERMARKET CPU heatsink.

Solve : Help with reset bios?

Answer»

Hi
I am PULLING what is left of my hair out at the moment. I stupidly reset the bios on my Athlon 1700+. I now cant seem to set it up so that it gives me the usual speed of 1.4mhz , it seems to want to run at 1.1mhz.

I am using an a7v266-E mainboard, bios version 1015, the multiplier is X11 and the bus speed seems to be 100.9, rated bus speed is201.8mhz.

I have tried all the combinations for settings in the following fields to no avail....
CPU speed(I have a choice of manual , 1100 or 1467)

CPU system frequency multiple (set at X11 which i think is right

System/pciFrequencyi have a range starting from 100/33 to227/57 (tried various settings here but ALWAYS forces me back to 1100mhz

System/sdram frequency ratio it is set to auto but i also have achoice of100:100 or 100:133

I have used cpuid and it tells me that the memory frequency is 134.3Mhz (FSB + 33Mhz ) Not sure what this means but it may point to a solution.

I have read elsewhere on the site that i may also need a new battery ( not REPLACED at all SINCE new a long time ago!

I would appreciate some help as my wife is getting fed up vacuuming the carpet!

Idiot free instructions on which settings to change would be GREAT and a pointer for saving and restoring/reviewing settings would be good.

Many thanks in anticipation

Aleki second the new battery. its a cheap fix, and if it doesnt fix the problem, at least you have a new battery .Thanks. still no solution though!did you get the new battery?Did you reset the BIOS or did you flash the BIOS ? ?
There's a huge difference...

Solve : Trying to fix my computer!?

Answer»

It slow so I want to add memory. Do I need to get the same brand or can I go with a different brand. My computer is a compact.please dont make  two threads on the same issue. The kind of RAM you put in your computer depends on what type it is.  You'll first have to know whether it is SDRAM, DDR, DDR2, etc.  If it's a newer computer you can bet it's not SDRAM.  And unless it is top of the line new it's probably not DDR3 either.  Probably DDR or DDR2.  Now whether or not you can mix brands, yes you can, but I wouldn't recommend it.  For me I do it on computers that I use for testing purposes, and most of the time it's fine.  Though if you want reliablity just stay with the same brand NAME of RAM and you should be fine.  On a side note, if the amount of RAM you get is more than you currently have always put the bigger of the two in the first slot, otherwise you could have memory issues LATER.  Not always, but sometimes.  It's just better to be SAFE than sorry.besides reading, it's much better if you TRAVEL to www.crucial.com by yourself and check in the crucial memory advisor tool dropdown box.incase you don't even know what is you motherboard, download everest.
http://www.lavalys.com/products/download.php?ps=UE&lang=enOn that note don't always trust Everest to be accurate - on my system it tells me that my MASTER hd is a 9G 5400rpm when it is actually a 10G 7200rpm! It also tells me that that hd has a 9.8G partition on it which is pretty hard to fit onto a 9G hd!

Solve : the computer is really slow?

Answer»

this is the problem
my computer is very slow and most of the games give a message that my videocard is very old
but when my dad bought this PC it was the newest(3years ago) and the games that i play where like from the same year

my computer is really acting slow and stuff and i even raised the memory use very much it doesn't work

I DELETED all programs that could make my PC slow I  defrag 10times but nothing seems to work..

my C: is not full, i only use 1/4 of it, so that can't be it either

someone please gimme something to make that thing faster

BTW, suddenly out of nowhere something came into my processlist
process name| user name|  session ID| CPU| memory use

session ID suddenly came into it... dunno what it does
all my session ID's are 0

BTW2, I got many processes that i don't use, they don't take much memory or CPU
can this do any harm? How many processes does Task Manager show after a fresh start of your computer?  What's the CPU Usage shown at the bottom of the Processes view of Task Manager?

What protections against viruses and spyware do you have installed?  Your firewall?  Any disk cleanup utilities or registry cleaners installed, and used?

You "raised the memory".  How much does it have?We have no info about the machine....nor the vid card in question here... Quote from: soybean on December 08, 2007, 07:54:11 AM

Running old Java exposes your computer to unnecessary danger, so I strongly recommend to update it.

As for Office issue....
Since you don't have Office XP anymore, you can remove ctfmon.exe from your system: http://www.gerhard-schlager.at/en/projects/ctfmonremover/
Restart.

Then...

Solve : Windows Vista 32 bit USB doesn't work?

Answer»

Hey all, just got a new 4g USB flash DRIVE, but sadly it doesn't work on my computer.

I reinstalled my chipset drives and it still doesn't work.  It recognizes the flash drive, but SAYS the drivers aren't installed, so I have vista look for them, doesn't work, so I have vista again look online and still can't find any.

Motherboard is: ASUS M2N-SLI Deluxe AM2 NVIDIA NFORCE 570 SLI MCP ATX AMD Motherboard

Any help would be cool. What is that flash drive make, and model?Bah, didn't give it did I?

Its a 4gig USB Flash drive.  Got it at Best Buy, geek squad brand.  I know, I don't like their crew but the price was decent.  Another company on the package is U3 Smart.  HOPE this helps, I hooked it to my friends computer and his recognized the drive fine, so I"m guessing its my USB drivers? I RELOADED the chipset and it still doesn't work.  Anyone got any ideas? Most flash drives don't need any drivers to be separately installed under XP, or Vista.
I'd exchange it. Quote from: Broni on December 09, 2007, 09:31:37 AM

The computer is vista, and it says it sees the flash drive, but there appropriate software to run it isn't installed.  I try to go through the steps to find it and vista can't find anything.  Quote

What is the exact message, and at what point does it come up?Have you got all your Vista updates ? ?
When first released Vista did not support U3 which is a security feature...but also allows apps to run right from the drive.
Check the Vista update page...

The other option would be to do a full format of it on the machine that sees it to remove the U3 feature.

Solve : video card - mobo compatibility?

Answer»

hello everyone ,

had this PROBLEM a while ago where i tried to use a Geforce MX - 64 MB CARD on a P3 Mobo but after booting,it showed an error of incompatbility..

which drives me to ask : how do i know "for sure" that a certain
video card(PCI-E or AGP) will work on a mobo - is it like : "any PCI-Express Card(high or low end) will work perfectly on any mobo that has a PCI-E slot" ?  or is it just a matter of luck ?

thanksApparently, you don't know what type slots you have, since no PIII has PCI Express.  So, forget about PCI-E.  Was the Geforce MX an AGP card or a PCI card, or do you not know? am asking a general question soybean .. forget about the MX and p3..i was just askin how to be 100 % sure a video card will work with a certain mobo (given that it has the suitable slots for it) without having COMPATIBILITY issues..?If you have an AGP slot, I believe you can use any AGP 4X/8X AGP card, assuming your power supply is adequate to support the card.  However, if you give us the exact make and model of your computer, we can be more definite.

And, any PCI video card you'd find on the market now should work in a PCI slot in your computer. Quote from: soybean on December 07, 2007, 04:10:41 PM

And, any PCI video card you'd find on the market now should work in a PCI slot in your computer.

as WELL as any PCI-E card. assuming that the motherboard has at least one PCI-E slot 16X.here is a specific make model :

-Asus Intel P35 P5K Socket LGA 775 + Dual Channel ..
-Intel Core2 Duo, E6750 (2,66GHz)  , 4MB , 1333MHz 775

running an 8800 GTS in the future(a different GC will be installed on the mobo for a while b4 the upgrade) ??

Solve : SATA/ SATA2?

Answer»

Hi, I've been looking all over the place for this info; its one of those things probably everyone takes for granted.  I want to INSTALL new hard drives. My motherboard has 3 free sata sockets. Can I  connect sata2 drives to them, and if so will they work at the sata two data transfer rates? I want to install tascam's Gigasampler3 which streams music samples from the hard drive rather than loading them into ram, so I need  sata drives  with 9ms or less av. seek time & 8mb cache,  ( Yes, I can get sata1 drives that will do this but they,re not cheap, [like I am]!).

If its relevant, I'm running xp on a packard bell imedia 1559, 2.8ghz, 1gb, (soon to be 4) ram

Thanks. You need to check which SATA version your motherboard supports. If your motherboard doesn't support SATA2, then you need to check with your disk manufacturer. Some SATA2 disks have a jumper setting to work with SATA boards, they will then operate at SATA speeds. Other SATA2 disks may not work with a SATA board. The other option would be a SATA2 ADDON CARD...yep,thanks , all. Am trying for motherbd info now, but not LISTED on manf's web site;.  so its wait &  see  if they respond to emails. Sata2 card sounds  good  if no luck with manf. DLoad and install Everest Home and save a report to a text file and post the top 1/3 here...
It will tell you more than you need to know about that machine.yep, hopefully this post will actually get through. Anyway, report attatched.

Solve : Computer Part Brands??

Answer»

When buy memory or any COMPUTER insides can you PUT a different brand in your computer and still work? Like I have a compace computer and want to up grade it. Can I put a different brand in it?compace computer? i have never HEARD of that MANUFACTURER, did you mean compaq? are you sure that you spelled it correctly?

*EDIT*

it appears that in your double post, you labeled it "compact", so i can assume that this is a compaq computer we are talking about.

heres an explantation for your question...

compaq, like dell and emachines, are SIMPLY computer manufacturers. they do not make the internals of the computer, they just put them all together. the type of RAM that you wish to put in your computer relies solely on the motherboard, what the motherboard can support and how much the motherboard can support.List more specifics on what you are trying to accomplish so we can assist further without guessing at what it is you want to do...

it isnt very often that you can place another HD in another computer and get it to work without some serious side effects. from what you are telling us, it seems to me that either the harddrive got corrupted or the harddrive just died. my suggestion would be to place whatever HD(s) you want in that computer and do a reformat/reinstall.

mohkiller, he stated that he cannot boot into windows. even if he could, it would be better to reformat than to "mess around" in DOS....and you need some Windows CD to start with...all im trying to do is see whats wrong with the old hard drive....the NEW one with windows is for my computer....i just put it in to see if it would work.....with the old hard drive in, if i put the xp cd in the computer and start it up it still goes to the invalid system disk.....whats wrong with the old hardrive is that it needs to be reformatted. if reformatting does not solve the problem then the HD is toast. DONT use another comp to troubleshoot the HD. leave it in your sisters comp and reformat it and reinstall windows.i can reformat when i put the xp disk in...usually....but when i put the xp cd in and try to start up....it takes me to the invalid system screen again....how do i reformat w/o windows...or knowing what was on it b4 i got my hands on it?? I am trying to fix my sisters old computer.  when I start up the computer it says that there is an invalid system disk.  then when i unplug the hard drive and put in another one, it goes to the screen where it says "start windows normally, safe mode, and all that other stuff, no matter which one i click it just starts the boot sequence again and goes to the same screen.  I'm not sure what operating system is on the old hard drive but the one that i put in has XP on it....any help would be greatly appreciated...

you need to setup your BIOS to boot from the CD first.

to ENTER the BIOS, follow the directions on your screen at the startup. you are looking for something along the lines of "push __ to enter system settings" or "push __ to enter BIOS". different BIOS manufacturers use different keys to enter the BIOS, but the most usual keys are DEL, F1, or F12.

upon entering the BIOS, look for something along the lines of "boot priority" or "boot sequence". make the optical drive that you have your XP CD in boot first. save then exit. your comp will restart and will now boot off of your windows CD. Quote from: mohkiller on December 08, 2007, 03:07:09 PM

cant you mess arround with the DOS settings in the beginning to delete C:?

Please ignore this advice.
Travel to the drive manuf. site and DLoad their free diagnostics.
Use this to create a bootable floppy/CD.
Then follow Homer's instructions to set the boot priority.
Put the bootable CD in and restart and run the diagnostics on that drive.
Report back with your findings. Quote from: patio on December 09, 2007, 08:12:04 AM

Solve : Windows Media Player - AAC Files from iTunes??

Answer»
I know that I cannot PLAY ITUNES downloaded FILES on any other player besides iTunes however when I upload a CD onto iTunes it makes it an AAC audio file and when I try to play that on my Windows Media Player 11 I cannot play it.  I've read I can download something that allows my WMP to play those files?  any ideas?

This is most LIKELY due to Digital Rights Management (DRM) in WMP.
I think, you can play those files in Winamp.the latest winamp do that.

Solve : Moving computer - router??

Answer»

Hi there.
I am not EXACTLY computer literate, and would like INFO/advice from those in the know! I apologize beforehand if I sound like a complete dope!
We are moving our computer from one room to another. It is hooked up to a cable modem. We don't want to have wires RUNNING throughout the house, so is a router the answer here??
If so, what and how do we do it???!  What is the best type of router?
Any and all info is greatly appreciated! Looked on the internet for help, but got totally confused! I'm assuming the new room doesn't have cable ran.
For myself, it would be cheaper to have the cable PROVIDER/Internet Service Provider to install cable in the new room. Meaning you wouldn't need a router. But, I would guess that would be an option. I recently hooked up a router to my pc for my PS3 to access online gaming and internet from my T.V. I bought a LinkSys Wireless-G Broadband Router, and it was pretty easy to install, (considering i've never installed one before). It cost me $70 USD. In your case, your only moving your computer to another room without cable. Check to see if your ISP/Cable provider would even charge you for the services.

A wireless router is the clear answer here.  The router would be connected to your modem.  If your computer does not have a wireless receiver, you'll need to get a wireless network card, i.e. wireless adapter, to install in it.

This would be an option for a router: D-Link - Wireless-N Router, Model: DIR-615.  And, here's a PCI Wireless G Desktop Adapter

Run which wires?  The cable running from the modem to the computer?  Or, the coaxial cable from your TV cable service provider?

Do you have the coaxial cable currently installed in other rooms besides the one in the room where the computer is currently located?  If so, what about moving your modem into the same room as the computer?  Quote

Solve : VIA MotherBoard Help.?

Ok, i have a Un labled VIA Socket 370 Motherboard, With a pentium III Processor (800MHz.) I had received it from my employer whom had been running WINDOWS 98 on it. I had a perfectly good copy of XP laying around, so i THREW in some compatiable RAM, a larger HD, and poped the CD in, at first it occured to me that it was taking longer to mount the setup files to the RAM then it did with my pentium II which i had installed XP fine. I ignored this and left it to sit, however once it restarted i received a message like "Opperating system not found" I checked my BIOS and its set to read my HD, do you think its the drive? If so any one know where i can get a program to wipe it and start from scratch? Its a Maxtor 120GB IDEE. Let me know what you guys think the PROBLE is with the install.'

Thanks,
Johnthe option to reformat the HD is on the XP CD.indeed, however it usualy takes 2 hrs to get to the format phase, i was wondering what the issue is with the MoBo itself, but thanks for the tip  it may just be the optical drive, unless you have verified that it worked correctly before hooking it up to this motherboard.hmmm. i have tried 4 opticle drives, including a low power DVD drive, and all seem to be spinning the disk at a higher rate of SPEED than normal, however i will try again.

btw. thx for the help homerare the jumpers set correctly on the harddrive? is the IDE cable plugged into the correct IDE connector on both the optical drive(s) and harddrive? my last mobo had 2 IDE CONNECTORS on it, when XP didnt install correctly i had no idea what was causing it, little did i know that i plugged my optical drives in the IDE slot meant for the HD. hehe. i will go try tht. was outside decorating my house. thx homer!

Solve : Partition is there, but Windows can't see it?

Answer»

Alright, I was resizing and moving some partitions to make room on another partition using Partition Magic 8. I've used this program for a long time but it's never done this to me.

The drives involved were C:, D:, and K:... the three partitions on my main disk. C: is my Windows partition, D: is a files partition where I store backups, K: holds my games.

This is the procedure PM8 was to follow:
Quote

Resize C: from 30GB to 20GB
Move D: to start after C:'s new end
Resize D: from 60GB to 40GB
Move K: to start after D:'s new end
Resize K: to take the rest of the space at the end of the disk.

C: resized and is working fine. D: didn't resize, and during its move, I received 2 errors:
Quote
Error 1608
File record marked used, file 48872

Error 1508
Bad directory buffer signature

And with that, PM8 said it couldn't continue with the rest of the operations until this error was fixed. I clicked ok, and decided to scan D: for errors, here's where the problem is. Windows can no longer see D:. Everest Home and Partition Magic still see the partition there, but both show it without a drive letter.

Everest's report on the drive:
Quote
Partition       Partition Type   Drive   Start Offset    Partition Length
#1 (Active)          NTFS            C:           0 MB             20002 MB
#2                       NTFS                       40005 MB        65005 MB
#3                       NTFS            K:       115012 MB       37613 MB

Any ideas?

-=EDIT=-
I made some corrections to this... the drive DIDN'T resize. Sorry for the typo, not sure what I was thinking
Oh, and the move came before the resize.I have not used it in sometime but if you use the PM bootdisk and bypass Windows is it shown there ? ?
Were the partitions all defragged prior to the operation ? ?
Sorry, grasping at straws here...This computer doesn't have a floppy drive. I don't think I've used a floppy disk in several YEARS. I don't think I have any around here, and if I did, I don't think they would still be working.

Yes, everything was defragmented before carrying this out.

I'm not crazy about recovering that drive. Like I said, it's the backup and the files can easily be replaced with the originals. PM8 sees the partition without a problem. I can use PM8 to browse through the partition and alter it.

That was weird. After restarting again (which I tried before) to see if Windows would pick it up during start up and give it a letter, it still hasn't. I can assign it a drive letter in Windows because, like I said, Windows can't see it. However, I forgot that I can do that same thing with PM8. I had PM8 assign it D:, clicked OK, and Windows immediately added it to the drives listed in My Computer and sees it fine now.

Ok, now I need to find out what led to this happening in the first place and whether or not I need to scrap the partition and rebuild the backup or if this can be corrected.

-=UPDATE=-
Just had CHKDSK do a read-only check:

Quote
CHKDSK is verifying files (stage 1 of 3)...
File verification completed.
CHKDSK is verifying indexes (stage 2 of 3)...
Correcting error in index $I30 for file 19705.
Correcting error in index $I30 for file 19705. (Yes, it said this twice).
Deleting index entry Korean in index $I30 of file 48855.
Indexing verification complete.

Errors found. CHKDSK cannot continue in read-only mode.

I found what the Korean was, it's a directory containing a Korean language manual. No loss there. If it's not English, Chinese, or Thai, I can't read it anyway. Are all 3 partitions NTFS ? ?
If so you can use the /x switch in chkdsk which dismounts the drive first and assumes the /f switch...
But this shouldn't have mattered with PM8.I intentionally told it to go into read-only mode, I didn't want it to alter anything at that time.

I've since unmounted and rescanned and repaired the errors. Everything appears as it should now.

Weird how it just dropped the drive letter like that though, I still haven't figured what cause all this in the first place, but at least it appears fixed.Good to hear...PM used to give me fits and i quit using it sometime ago.
If i need re-sizing for any reason now i create an image of the partitions individually with Acronis first.
I then delete and re-size as needed and restore the data from the image files. Fewer headaches this way.
I also didn't like how PM rewrote the MFT at times and if you got in a bind their rescue disk was the only choice.
I hate any utilities that put restrictions/conditions on what i use them for.I used to have problems with my earlier version of Partition Magic (several versions ago, 3? 4?). I've been on 8 for a long long while now. It gets used quite a bit and I've not once had a problem with it until now. Luckily, no major loss. Ain't no Koreans on this computer so it doesn't matter if I lost that manual. Most of that stuff is garbage anyway. It's like one of those boxes in the attic: it's been there forever and you don't even know what's in it anymore. I really need to sort it out, delete what I don't need, keep what I do, and free up the space.Ok, now I'm sure I broke something

I think PM8 has screwed up the partition table. My drives read fine and work fine, but when I try to start PM8 it says "Init Error 100: Partition table is bad".

Any suggestions as to the best way to restore the partition table?Tryin to cheer you up here cause Symantec suggests using FDisk and starting over...

Link

I just HAD to laugh....man can they RUIN good software or what ? ?

  hahaha that's funny.

They might as well say "Should our program not perform as it is designed to, you paid $80 for nothing, sucker! Use fdisk."

They also recommend using PartitionInfo (a tool that comes with PM8). PartitionInfo doesn't list either of my physical drives though.

Everything is working fine though. There are no hard drive errors (aside from the mentioned), no bad sounds from the drive, no read errors, nothing.

I was actually going in to install Linux on this computer again, that's how I discovered the problem in the first place. I was going in to create some free space so Linux could make its partition. If I wasn't going to do that I would have never noticed anything was wrong with the partition tables. Here Ya Go

This is a link to Paragon's Free offer for Partition Manager...rumor has it it's still free even though it says APRIL 11

I snagged it awhile ago but just did a cursory Test...nothing extensive. It's still on my ToDo list.

Thanks Patio, I'll give that one a try.PM8 still tells me something is wrong, but Paragon doesn't see any problems nor did it have any problems resizing a partition to make free space for my Linux partition.

Which makes me wonder... is there actually something wrong with the partition table or is PM8 just being stupid?

-=EDIT=-
This is actually a nice program for $50. I might ditch my old PM8 and go with this from now on. Has all the features I need.

I've scanned the drive with several programs and none of them are seeing any problems with the drive. I think PM8 just wants to be a pain in the *censored*. The  version you DLoaded is full featured and if it installed correctly there's no reason to shell out 50 bucks...
As far as the drive itself i suspect that the partition table is PM propietary and or corrupt which is why i got so aggravated with the program a ways back...i DO NOT want programs doing things i can't undo or not telling me what it is they do.
This was my main reason for walking away from the program in the first place.

Personally i'd wipe that drive with everything under the Sun including FDisk, Darek's Boot Nukem and any other wipe utility i could find in order to ERADICATE any changes PM made to the disk...

Sorry for the mini-rant but that's how i see it.Yeah, most LIKELY that's what I'll do. All of my important files are stored on a second physical disk, just in case stuff like this happens. Makes formatting or REPARTITIONING the main drive easier.

Solve : upgrading graphics card?

Answer»
i own a celeron d 2.4ghz processor gvsr 845 intel motherboard computer with ONBOARD graphics. i have 2 pci slots empty would i be able to upgrade my graphics card since it has onboard graphics and if so what card will suit my computerSo, you have no AGP or PCI Express slot, right?  If you only have PCI slots, that severely limits your choices.  But, you still have some to choose from.  Here's ONE source that lists 39 PCI cards: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/category/category_slc.asp?CatId=319

The first listed there, PNY Verto GeForce FX 5200 Video Card - 256MB DDR, PCI, Dual VGA, TV Out, Video Card, looks INTERESTING if it fits your budget for this.  If you think you might want to run dual monitors, then this card would be a very good choice.    but my doubt is if my computer which has onboard graphics will support external graphics cardDo you have any documentation on your motherboard?  If not, visit the manufacturer's website and search for documentation, perhaps a downloadable user's manual.  Exactly what MAKE and model computer do you have?

Most computers with onboard graphics will support an add-on video card of one type or another (PCI Express, AGP, or PCI).  With some systems, installing an add-on video card will automatically disable the onboard video.  With other systems, you need to access your BIOS settings and disable onboard video.

Solve : Is this video card compatible??

Answer»

I'm going to buy this card, before I do I wanted to make SURE it's compatible with my computer. Does it need some special power connector or SOMETHING? My computer:

HP Pavilion a6000n PC
AMD Athlon 64 X2 2.2 GHz 4200+
1 GB RAM
300 W PSU (I checked on that power calculator, it said I only need 260ish watts with my setup and the card)
nVidia nForce 4 series motherboard (I can find the exact model if needed)
The system requirements for it state a minimum of 300W power supply and a PCI Express-compliant motherboard, both of which you have.  If your power supply is one of GOOD QUALITY, I'd say you'll be OK with that video card.  I'll post back when I get it.OK, I look forward to hearing about it.I finally got the card, shipping took a while. It's great, except for one thing. Battlefield 2 but it won't start. The screen goes black, and then after about 3 seconds it goes back to the desktop without any error message. I know that this is a common issue. According to random websites this happens when you have a video card that's too old, this one obviously isn't. The other one is that the game doesn't like it when your refresh rate is above 60. Mine is 60, because thats the recommended one for my monitor. Why won't it start?
Quote

The other one is that the game doesn't like it when your refresh rate is above 60

well, if you motherboard supports it, you need to get a geforce 8800 GT 512 mb. Don't take my word for it. Read the reviews and make your own mind up. If you have the cash, get an 8800GT.
If not, the 8600GT will also do, but the 8800GT is far better value for money.
Another 1Gb of RAM would be fairly inexpensive and would help with newer games.
Finally, a new CPU may also help, but it's not such a bottleneck right now. Quote from: CALUM on December 03, 2007, 11:17:22 AM

i second the extra gig of RAM. i have 2 gigs and even with a 768mb graphics card, i use about 80% of it while playing crysis. Things to get (this holiday season):

1. A new graphics card - 8800 GT

2. An extra 1024MB of identical RAM

3. A new CPU - E2180

REPENT!  As the system stands right now, the CPU is not a bottleneck.
With a new graphics card and 2GB of RAM, it will become a bottleneck.
An E2140/60/80 is cheap and will increase performance, but a new graphics card and more RAM should be a higher priority.what about overclocking the CPU? Quote from: Eredell on December 05, 2007, 04:31:12 PM

Close, but the correct answer is you must have aftermarket cooling, if you have to ask wether to overclock or not. Quote from: Jess607 on December 06, 2007, 01:27:57 AM

sorry to object, but you do not need an aftermarket cooling solution to overclock. it is a good idea though, as overclocking with a stock cooler will have a large effect on how high you can overclock. Quote from: homer on December 06, 2007, 05:12:29 PM

No, you do need an aftermarket cooler for a 65nm Quad-Core CPU. If you don't want to burn your house down, it's needed.

Solve : building my new comp.?

Answer»

So, I'm about to start building a new computer for myself, ive decided on the case: NZXT LEXA. Im looking into the field of web design, and things of the sort, I need help building a computer that will help me go in the right direction. My budget is from $750-900. do you  do much gaming?Well, that would be a maybe, because my current comp. completely lacks everything and anything that would allow me to play any games. my comp. has a 15 GB harddrive, (sad i know) im around or less than 1 GB at the moment, and I have a pentium III processor 697 MHz, and 384 MB of RAM... but yeah you get my point. if i had a comp that could support games, i probably would play some games here and thereheres a good package...i did not include an OS. i also did not include a sound card, the motherboard has onboard sound, but if youre picky about AUDIO you have the option to purchase one.

Power supply (as your case does not come with one) -  $85: antec earthwatts 500W
Motherboard- $87.02: gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L
CPU- $254.11: Intel Q6600
DVD writer- $29.59: LG GSA-H62N SATA
RAM-$71.66 ($36.66 after rebate) OCZ Platinum XTC REV.2 PC2-6400 2GB 2X1GB DDR2-800
Graphics Card- $211.62: EVGA 8600GTS
Hardrive: $70.94: Seagate Barracuda SATA

the total comes to $809.94USD before taxes. all the prices listed here originated from www.ncixus.com
Some things to correct. Please take note of this for next time, or just leave it to me.

Good choice, but always reccomend an aftermarket cooler with a Quad-Core CPU.

The HxxN series is identical to the HxxL series but has no lightscribe.

Very bad choice, when you can find 2GB of Micron D9-based DDR2-800 modules for half the price.

Either the 8600 GT for a casual gamer, or an 8800 GT for a real gamer.

The best choice, right now, would be a 320GB HDD from Western Digital, as they usually have the best prices.

That's about the level of my old PC, it's still serviceable but not good for intensive tasks.

I agree with Jess607's statements mostly, the 8600GT makes sense if you're not a hardcore gamer but might want to do some gaming.
Not sure if an after market cooler is really necessary though, I'd just stick with the stock cooler unless you're into overclocking.
Other than that, 2Gb of RAM and a quad core make sense right now, especially if you;re using Dreamweaver, Flash and that sort of thing, it'll really fly.
Also think about an operating system, this is an important choice. Quote from: Calum on December 06, 2007, 02:55:26 AM

It's up to us to turn them to the wonderful world of overclocking  Explain overclockingOverclocking is the process of making hardware (usually the CPU, RAM and/or graphics card) run faster than it is rated to.
This can be fairly daunting to the newcomer, and as such I would only recommend it if you (or anyone) were really into hardware, wanted more performance, and had the time, patience, inclination and ability to read up a lot before attempting it, and then taking it very slowly over several days or weeks.I have time and patience if it could truly help me in the long run with web design, graphics, etc. also if it can make my soon to be new computer run faster, then by all means tell me where i can read up on it.also does it cost money to overclock, or is is it just modifying CERTAIN things here and there Quote from: hankfrank on December 06, 2007, 02:14:39 PM

No, it's free. It just involves clocking a chip higher than it is at stock. That's how computer chips work, they can all clock higher than at stock.good to know, any advice for accessories, keyboards, a mouse, etc. my friend buys from razer for that kind of stuff, any other good places to buy that general stuff. I'm still looking for any more advice for building my new comp. Quote from: hankfrank on December 06, 2007, 03:16:35 PM

its free to a certain extent. the harder you make your GPU/CPU work, the more heat they create. heat is a limiting factor in overclocking as it can lead to a system crash. you will, of COURSE, be able to overclock with stock cooling, but you will experience more "overclockability" with an aftermarket cooling solution.

Solve : Need Urgent Help.. Computer won't boot?

Answer»

This is totally weird.  My computer is working fine today until I decided to add 2 more gig of ram into it.  After that, it won't even boot up, there is no beeping sound, and there is no signal to the computer monitor at all.  The screen is totally dark, flashing "no signal".  After I remove the RAM, the computer still won't start up at all.  I checked all the cable, video card cables, unplug and re-plug in everything.  Still, it doesn't help at all.  The power supply is working, since all the fans are still working.  I stripped the computer down to the bare essential, one strip of ram, one HD, video card.. still, the computer won't boot... does that mean my motherboard is fried?  Help!!
My computer setup is as follows:
Core 2duo 6420
OCZ 2P800R22GK: 2 Gb (the extra 2Gb of RAM that I tried to install today is exactly the same as the original one I had inside the computer before this incident
Motherboard: Gigabyte 965P S3sounds like either the power pack has gone or your board is fried i had this problem and it was my power pack it just happened randomly but just take it to the local comp shop and they should be able to fix it another thing is that I cleared CMOS last night, however, after that, my computer will only start for 2 seconds before it restart all by itself, and it keeps doing that until i shut it off.  My Raidmax computer case doesn't have a built-in speaker, so I can't even heard any beep.  One interesting thing is that after I remove everything (including cpu), the computer will stay on, the fan will keep working, however, once I put cpu in but NOTHING else, the computer will start keep restarting by itself.  why is that?hmmmmmm im not too sure could be your CPU has fried or your CPU is confused but atleast youve now narrowed down the problem to your CPU being the most likely thats better now you can either replace it or get it checked cause hardware is the hardest to explain over the INTERNET it needs to be checked for things like soldering errors for example.

So from my experience theres nothing i can do to really help you sorry Someone has SUGGESTED to me that it could be PSU, is it possible?  if it is due to PSU, why does the fan still work? Quote from: tubbychubby on December 06, 2007, 04:20:45 PM

Someone has suggested to me that it could be PSU, is it possible?  if it is due to PSU, why does the fan still work?

the PSU has many wires running many different voltages, it is possible that the part of the PSU that powers the fans still works while the rest could be ka-put. but before BLAMING the PSU, we need to know a few more things...

I cleared CMOS last night,
how did you clear the CMOS?

the speaker responsible for BIOS beeps comes with the motherboard, not with the case. you may wish to find a speaker, as your BIOS could be telling you whats wrong...

Solve : Hardrive Transplant?

Answer»

I had a thought and I wondered if anybody can say whether this is a realistic thought or not.

I have an old PC from 2000 which is probably going to be thrown out. Hasn't been used in two years, all it NEEDS is a motherboard change, but it's rather a waste of time considering the decrepit state of all the components. I'd like to keep the files that are currently on the PC though.

Is it possible that I COULD take the hardrive out and then INSERT it into something like, for example, an external hardrive, and use it with my current PC, to take the files off, or perhaps even as extra storage?

ThanksTry ----->HereOr SIMPLY hook it up as a slave drive in a known working machine...preferably with a burner and copy/burn all the DATA you need to your hearts content.

Solve : S.O.S over HP error message?

Answer»

Greetings!  You are my last hope.  I have contacted HP many times in many ways without success.  I know my hardware is an ORPHAN but I'm hoping error messages are shared by at least a few different lines.  I have an HP Surestore DAT8i which is posting an error message 30300.  I bought the unit as new and it doesn't look like it has ever been used.  Is this problem fixable?  Thank you so much!
AllanWhat's your O/S? At what point do you get the error message?Hi!  I'm using Windows 98 and the error message is posted shortly after the tape drive's utility starts its self-test. However, at no time does the drive show an amber light.  I have a green light until it hangs-up on the self test.  Actually, the message seems to be posted just after the drive spins-up: you can hear the high-pitched whirring sound just before. It sounds normal though, not like there is a mechanical fault.
AllanHow does it appear in Device Manager? Does it have any errors? Do you have a drivers CD for the device?Well, I don't think my Windows98 has Device Manager but if it does I don't know how to use it.  Anyway, I have the driver CD for the unit and in fact it is through the diagnostic on the CD that I get the error message.No support for Win98...See Here...Dear Patio;
Yes, I am only too well aware of what the HP site has to offer.  In fact, I have emailed them 4 times, each time getting a promise that a techy would be in touch in one business day as well as a customer service number.  No techy ever replied.  When I phoned them I was redirected 3 times and no one knew anything about the customer reference numbers.  I finally found myself listening to a message from their parts department which said they were now closed.   It is worth noting that this DAT8i unit was specifically designed for use with Win98.   My hope and expectation is that these error messages are not just specific to a particular piece of hardware.  Surely some kind of company, if not industry standard must exist!  Thanks for your interest.

Well, I don't think my Windows98 has Device Manager but if it does I don't know how to use it.

One WAY to get to Device Manager:
Click on    Start->Settings->Control Panel->System
System Properties will open.
See the Device Manager tab.

Another (shortcut) way to open System Properties:
Hold down the WinKey and hit the Pause/Break key.
System Properties will open.

Anyway, I have the driver CD for the unit

It came with whatever back up software you will be using, correct?
That's how I understand it from:
ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/information_storage/software/9598drivers.txt
that I found with patio's link.

Further,  it seems to me that since HP is STATING that they will not/do not supply a driver,  then I doubt they would be able to answer any questions.
They'd refer you to whatever software you are using.
Just my opinion....

and in fact it is through the diagnostic on the CD that I get the error message.

That link I posted above is just a short text article.   It is worth a careful read.
Does the very last line contain any help for you?

Thank you to all.  I guess I should have been clearer about what I called the utility that I have.  This CD has all the application software including Colorado and Tapeassure.  It is the self-test driven by this software that is posting the error message.  Quote from: alleyoop on December 05, 2007, 12:43:52 PM

You've installed the driver?
Next look in Device Manager.       Any warnings?

Okay, I have checked the Device Manager.  It took me a while because the drive is actually not in the computer I'm using to communicate with this forum.  The computer with the problem tape drive is not connected to the net.  Anyway, the Device Manager says "device is working properly". I also reinstalled Colorado Backup and Tape Assure but the result of the self-test (phase 1 of 3) was the same: failure.Have you tried cleaning the tape heads ? ?
A long QTip and rubbing alcohol and allow drying time.
Hi Patio.  No, I haven't tried that.  I guess the reason being that the unit is new, even though chronologically it is old.  The CD containing all the software had not been opened.  The other THING is that this first phase of the diagnostic does not involve any interaction between the machine and a tape.  In the third phase---which I can't reach because the process stops when the first phase fails---a tape is installed and that part of the function is tested.  If only there was some way of discovering what that error message meant--- "30300"Error CodesHi.  I'm beginning to feel like a nuisance!  All I know is that those error codes are supposed to have five fields and as far as I can tell I have only one field...with six digits.  Therefore, it would seem that none of those codes apply.  They SAY that in such a case one should refer to a different sort of code.  I'll see if the HP site has anything under that.  Thanks for all the help.  It's much appreciated.

Solve : Compaq hard drive nightmare?

I have an armada 4120 with 1bg hd. I want to CHANGE the hard drive for one bigger of 20gb. I installed the new drive and ran the SETUP from the original recovery discs. At first the drive which was sold to me "G-FORMATTED" ran the setup almost all the way.But when it asked me for the key of WIN95 which I did not have at the moment I just turn the pc off. When I found the key I tried to CONTINUE the set up but the pc either says "missing operating system" or "non system disk remove it and place system disc".There is no way the laptop "sees" the hd now. I removed it and formated in anothe desktop pc using fdisk but to no use the laptop does not recognizes it. I tried to run the setup from the desktop and then placing the hard disk on the laptop but it does not WORK. There is no way to get into the bios. If I put an emergency boot disk on the floppy the laptop says  "non system disc" Can you recommend any further action? Thank you

BASICALLY, all you have to do is put the card in. Depending on your operating system, you may or may not need to install a driver. However, if needed, the driver is usually included on a DISK that comes with the device.

-=EDIT=-

If you buy that particular one, there's a link on the page for the driver download if needed. That's just an example though, you don't have to buy that particular one. If there's a computer shop near you, they usually carry something like this.ok think you alot !!!!!!!! for the help.....

It all depends what you will be doing in your business, no-one can tell you what you need unless state exactly what you will be doingUrgent help, but no show for next 8 hours....STRANGE...Go to HP.com and look for a machine.  You obviously don't KNOW anyone who can build a machine.

If you want a machine built, then get a AM2 socket CPU AMD, motherboard with onboard video, LAN card and sound, Abit has a nice motherboard.  2G on the CPU is just find.  Get a GeForce 5200 or above.  Get a SATA Drive (new standard)  Monitors are hard, you need to go to a computer store and review some LCD monitors, what can you look at without hurting your eyes.  You should be paying around $300 for a 20" LCD.  You should go with a 500 watt power supply.

Oh forget Dell please.personally, i would buy a set of speakers. i could not see internal monitor speakers having very high quality audio. Quote from: Broni on December 06, 2007, 10:36:38 PM

1. Checked and doublechecked the cables.
2. Tried a diffrent monitor...even a monitor that i know works.
3. Tried a diffrent video card instead of using the onboard one.

Anyone know of any tricks to get this thing working?? Start with removing new RAM, and inserting the old one.
How many sticks with what values, old, and new?
What Windows version?im sure its actually the orriginal ram that was in THER...i had just taken it out and left it out for a few months Quote

then recently i decided to add a cd-drive hard drive, ram... etc.
What exactly is new?lol  when i said "new" i actually meant new as in diffrentOK...What components are DIFFERENT from the stage when computer actually worked?cd drive....floppy drive...hard drive... keyboard....mouse.... but theese wouldnt cause NOTHING to SHOW up on the screen would they??Which of those are new, which ones are used ones?Nothings new....its all used...i used the word "NEW" as in its never been in that computer before.....What about hard drive itself, then? Was it fdisked, formatted, OS installed?not quite sure...i was just going to format it and install a new os on it with that computer..
Well, you need to do this first in order to see ANYTHING on your screen. Do you have any OS CD?sure...i got win 98...95...xp pro......i got other computers i can format the drive
