Solve : Sound out of one speaker of laptop?

Answer»

Sometimes, sound only comes out of the left speaker of my laptop. I can log off or reboot the machine and it works again but it is very annoying for obvious reasons. Also, when I plug in speakers the sound only comes out of one of the speakers. So I get frustrated.
I am running WinXP on a Lenovo ThinkPad T61.
Thanks.Have you tried reinstalling the sound drivers?Do you have service pack 2
installed for Windows XP?

Replace the sound card and the motherboard if the computer in warranty if not only replace the sound card.

It's a laptop...Even if its a laptop the sond card and the motherboard can be replaced. Depends on the warranty.
Well I got the laptop through my college so I don't want to void the warranty. Would reinstalling the driver do that?No...it shouldn't.
Use the original driver from the laptop Driver CD.
Re-boot after installing and then check things out.
Has this machine taken a fall recently ? ?

If the driver does not do the trick and it is still under warranty i would certainly take advantage of that...Thats correct. Try installing the driver FIRST and if that does not work call the manufacturer and get the sound card replaced for FREE. Nothing is wrong in this. Dell tech hereAgain it's a laptop...probably not a sound card involved.
Replacing a laptop MBoard was also not very prudent advice as it is something most users should not attempt unless they have experience doing so...An internal integrated sound card can be replaced. A motherboard can be replaced for a laptop and I  have not asked any one to do it by self. I have asked the to get it replaced by manufacturer. How can I reinstall the driver? How do I know which driver?Any suggestions?Go to Control Panel/System/Hardware/DEVICE Manager...
SEE what's LISTED as your sound/audio device...
Then select that driver from the Driver CD... Quote from: makshaw17 on March 28, 2009, 12:21:34 PM

I'm not going to get into a petty argument with you...laptops are not made to be user servicable.I don't think I have the driver CD.

Solve : pc restarts and even i am not able to format my pc. So pls help me?

Answer»

Dear Sir,

My pc details :

P4 : Intel : MPGA478B
Ram : 256 MB
And no extra slots inserted.

1)   I was out from my home. So my pc was shut down till 2 month. Now when I came back. I started 3 days ago 1 time and when again I was starting yesterday . My pc was starting till os . And then again restarting. Every time it was restarting.

In between also errors came like. :

1)   CMOS checksum eror defaults loaded.
2)   Secondary IDE Channel no 80 conductor cable installed

Please give me a solution how should I make my pc working.
And why are the above errors coming in my pc.

I thought to repair my c Drive using xp cd. But in between error came in blue page and I was not able to do repair.
So I than decided to do format of my C: drive. But I was not able to format my pc bcz the error in blue page was coming while formatting also. So pls tell me how should I format my pc.

Regards,

Anjeep

Replace the CMOS battery PART #CR 2032.
It's about the size of a dime located on the MBoard.

The conductor error can be ignored or you can replace the IDE with an 80 wire ribbon cable...it means the old style 40 pin is being used.sir, I am also not able to format my pc.

(Note : I have removed my cmos battery and trying to format my pc without cmos battery. So is it bcz of that i am not able to format or pc or is there any other reason)

How are you attempting to format ? ?
Post the entire BSOD error MESSAGE including the gibberish...now i am able to format. I putted new cmos battery and new ram also. So now i am able to format.

Thank you.

Solve : cd/dvd roms don't read blank cd's?

Answer» RUNNING xp pro SP3, Sony DVD-ROM SD-616Q, Samsung DVD RW  DRU-820A.
History:
Up graded to new box, fitted with new Sony 616Q and re-used the Samsung 820A.
MSI  K9AGM2 mother board
Model 75 STEPPING  2AMD   1995 Mz
Realtec HD audio
NVIDIA Geforce 7300 SE/ 7200 GE
320 Gig HD ( make unknown )
System more than a year old now.
On delivery all was working fine, switched off and when started up again the fun began.
All drives were there in MY COMPUTER, but only the dvd drives would not a show a cd was in the drives, auto play did not work, but clicking on the drive icon would get it working. Writing  all formats seemed OK, returned to builder many times but came back the same. What I did notice that if you right clicked a file, went to SEND TO the cd drives were not in the drop down list.  As long as I could do my work I lived with this, being a novice, I spent a lot of time on the web to try and solve this, firmware, driver up dates, removed the programs, reinstalled them to find them working till the next restart. Got hold of the SP3 up grade and then the cd name would show under the icon and all seemed to be fine. As I don't do cd's that often I can't say when things have changed, but the cd roms won't read a blank dvd discs, but a cd discs and the SEND TO drop down still does not show the cd drives. In the last few months it won't read my video camera dvd's, but will read any thing else including dvd movies It's got to a point where I want turf this set up,
but not keen on Vista.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

One of these may help:
1. Uninstall the drive through Device Manager.
Restart computer. The drive will be automatically reinstalled.
or...
2. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060
Restart computer.
or...
3. Download, and run Restore Missing CD Drive patch
Double CLICK on cdgone.zip to unzip it.
Right click on cdgone.reg, click Merge.
Accept registry merge.
Restart computer.
or...
4. Go to Device Manager, click a "+" sign next to IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers.
You'll see two items:
- ATA Channel0 (or Primary Channel)
- ATA Channel1 (or Secondary Channel)
Right click on each of them, and click Uninstall. Confirm.
Restart Windows. They'll be automatically reinstalled.Broni thanks for the prompt REPLY, I'll give it a try when I get home.

As a mater of interest , in SYSTEM INFORMATION when you click on cd roms
the page is blank search for new drivers or drivers updates it may seem like a silly question but you did make sure you bought the right format cd/dvd's?

sorry buddy failed to read key bit of post

Optical drives don't need any extra drivers.Did step 1,
The Sony is now shown as DVD-RAM DRIVE ( D:) but when you insert a blank DVD/CD disc it changes to CD DRIVE ( D:) and stays like that until you restart. In
MY DOCUMENTS right click any file, click send to, click D drive and the following error comes up;
"Windows encountered a problem when trying to copy this file. What do you Windows to do?    Retry      Cancel
So clicking on retry the error window just comes back.
The Samsung is  DVD DRIVE ( E:) and shows no response to either blank disc's. In MY COMPUTER right click on any file, click send to, and the drop down shows only the D drive. But in SYSTEM INFORMATION the dvd drives are now
shown.
Step 2. Done, but no change.
Step 3. Done, but no change.
Step 4. I do not have the two ATA channels, did nothing here.
Have 1x ATI   IDE Controler.
         2x Primary IDE Channels.
         2x Secondary IDE Channels.
1x Standard duel channel PCI  IDE Controler.

darkmajicks
The silly question may not so silly, I have a mixed bag of CD/DVD-R disc's laying on the table, from HP, Verbatim, Memorex etc. A while back I was trying to copy a video
CD from one drive to the other, after about 8 DVD-R's later that it would not  read   found a lone DVD-r in a paper sleeve, popped it in and it worked
It never struck me, at the time, to check what the make was, or format

i heard that dvd and cd have a seperate lazer it possibly may be burnt out. im only guessing this as a possible solution not an educated guess at all. Quote
2x Primary IDE Channels.
2x Secondary IDE Channels
Uninstall all 4. Restart computer.Broni,  will do.Step 4 done, with still the same result as step 1 in earlier post. Except that my D
drive will now only write on CD-R blanks, which is more than I had before.
Any idea why the drive description would change when a blank CD is put into the rom ?
You guys have been a great help so far, any other idea's. How many IDE Channels do you have listed now, after restart?Broni still have the same 4.

Laska No, darkest Africa I'm out of ideas here, short of both drives being bad.Broni many thanks again for your help and the input from others.
Plan B, I think I will buy a cheep DVD writer and install it and see what happens.
I will let you know how it goes.

Solve : laptop shutting down when screen is closed?

I have dell inspiron 1525 laptop. About 75% of the time I close the screen the it shutsdown and then opens up on the recovery screen. From that point it opens up fine. Solve : Intresting display problem.?

Answer»

So anyhow, I went on the task of CREATING a new computer recently and after playing a game of cat and mouse with the part provider I managed to get all the components together I needed. I hooked everything up and started the computer, all the fans run , cpu is clearly getting power , etc and yet my 9600 geforce card isnt displaying any output, instead just a black screen. Does anyone know any typical problems that might do this and if so possibily howto fix them also ? This problem has me stumped.

By the way power is RUNNING to all my compenents, I fortunaty didnt misplug anything .Perhaps the card itself is faulty? Did you try another graphic card? and check if the display is hooked up correctly and NOTHING is loose. Well, I always have used this display and it WORKS fine, but to be sure I checked all the connections like you MENTIONED and nothing was missing. So then I tried replacing my graphics card with a graphics card that I know works, still nothing coming back from the computer, monitor still says theres no input. Also my motherboard has no onboard graphics so thats a flunk too. Anyone got any ideas ?Quite Possibly PSU What are you running there then

Solve : CPU overheating/Voltage out of range?

Answer»

Hi,

For the past week or so my computer has been beeping.

It doesn't happen when booting up but after maybe an hour or so of use. It beeps just once at random intervals, sometimes a few seconds between and other times a few minutes.

Any idea how I can find out whats causing it?Possible overheating.
Does it start right away, when computer is up?

Download, and install SpeedFan: http://www.almico.com/sfdownload.php
Post your computer temperatures:

Provide processor info (hold Windows key, and hit Pause/Break key to find out).Hey Broni

And Processor:

Thanks mateYour processor max temp is listed at 60.1° C, so you're hot!
Was the screenshot TAKEN, while computer idle?

First thing to do is to get a can of compressed air, and clean the thing inside.Completely idle

I cleaned it out thoroughly about 4/5 weeks ago, this is strange You definitely have overheating problem.
Open the case, start the machine, and see, if all FANS are running.
Get a house fan, blow it TOWARD the case, and see, if temps go down (SpeedFan).
If so, it's probably time to reapply thermal paste. You may have blown stuff into the heat sink by misstake.

PULL the heat sink off and blow out the fins good and than put new thermal paste and put it back together.

Post the new numbers. Also check to be sure any other fans are running ok.

I posted a little late....Hey guys,

I removed the heatsink and cleaned everything out thoroughly, went out and bought new thermal paste and reinstalled the heatsink.

It was working fine for a day, now it's starting again

One thing I didn't do was clean the old paste off properly (I just wiped it with my finger lol) would that be the cause do you think?May be your laziness....LOLwhat do I need to clean it?http://www.arcticsilver.com/instructions.htmOk I cleaned the old paste off, reapplied new and still having issues.

I'm thinking it must be the heatsink?

Fan speeds seem low Yeah, those temps still look too high. Also I've been getting this warning:

That voltage looks odd, but I'm not a HARDWARE guy...

Solve : computer does not boot after colors faded?

Answer»

Hi everybody,
a friend of mine has a big problem. He was working with his laptop when suddenly all COLORS faded and the computer shut down. After that the computer did not boot anymore.
He uses Windows XP if that should be of interest.
One time it startet to boot and came until the screen where you have the windows logo and it's loading,
but then he had a blue screen talking about a problem with his nv4 device.
In the other cases the computer does not boot at all, but shoes a grey screen with a few colored vertical stripes.

I have no idea what exactly the problem is other than that it is not a software problem.
Is it the graphic ship?
Or do you think it is the mainboard because I mean one time you suddenly say the windows logo which needs a graphic ship or am I wrong?

HOPE you can help me here.

I think you mean Graphics Card or Chipset, which I think may be the problem here.

What model number is this laptop?

How old is it?

What was he doing when it cut out?I don't know the model number of the laptop, but it's maybe a year old
and he was playing an online game and CHECKING emails.
The game doesn't require a lot so it shouldn't be the problem of overheating.
The computer brand is Medion. It's a German company.
The graphic card is probably on board.
Hope that helps you a little.

There should be a model number somewhere on the laptop, either written on its case or on a sticker somewhere (usually on the bottom).

Does it have warranty?

And, just for the heck of it, can you boot in Safe Mode?I will ask for the model number. Don't have the laptop here with me, but since it's not booting anymore at all there is no way to boot it in safe mode. I am not sure about the warranty.
And what exactly do you need the model number for? With the model number, I can help you determine whether or not your computer is still under warrenty, help you get in contact with the manufacturer's customer support, and/or SEE if this is a problem with the type of laptop.
It also helps give us an idea of what we're working with. Quote

there is no way to boot it in safe mode
Did you TRY?
Are there any lights on laptop's keyboard? Can you hear any fans running?

Solve : Dell XPS freezes on BIOS POST?

Answer»

I have a Dell XPS710 (see system specs at the bottom)

1.  When I booted Monday the system froze one third through the BIOS POST screen

2. I unplugged every cable including USB mouse and USB keyboard (but left the monitors) and the system booted (albeit with keyboard missing error).  I was able to plug in the keyboard, mouse and ethernet cable and had a functional compter (so the problem is not the hard drive or the motherboard)

3.  I powered down and then restarted with just the USB keyboard in and it froze at the same place as #1.  I noted then the diagnostic lights on the front: 2, 3 and 4 were green indicating "A possible USB failure has occurred. Reinstall all USB devices and check all cable connections."  Duh.  Codes are here. http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/xps710/en/SM_EN/adtshoot.htm#wp1054589

4.  Thinking the problem might be the BIOS, I powered up as in #2 and went to dell.com and flashed the BIOS (Rev 1.4.1, same as before).  Computer shut down as it always does and then froze at the same place (since the USB keyboard was plugged in).  I was able to reboot as in #2 after that so BIOS doesn't seem to be it.

5. Now this is where I (nearly) went wrong.  I decided to clear the CMOS.  Powered down the system, moved the jumpers on the motherboard from PASSWORD to RTCRST and back as described in the Service Manual and then REBOOTED.  System still froze with the USB keyboard in.  So I took the keyboard out but now the system won't boot because it thinks I have a missing floppy drive (I reset the BIOS remember!!!! ARRRGGGHHHH).  I get the Dell infamous "Alert! Previous attempts at booting this system have failed at checkpoint [Ithr].  For help in RESOLVING this problem please note this checkpoint and contact Dell Technical Support" error.  The system says hit F1 to continue but I can't since it won't boot with a keyboard attached.  Talk about a catch-22.  So I no longer can get back to a functional computer in #2.  Am I stuck?  Do I have to call Dell?  But wait, our intrepid hero has an idea….

6. So I borrowed a PS/2 keyboard from a friend.  The computer doesn't choke on it.  I reboot and am able to hit F2, get into system setup and turn off the floppy controller.  Disaster averted.  While I'm there I checked all the other BIOS settings and they are all at the factory defaults.  The only system setup relating to USB is "USB Controller" which is at the default: ON.  I exit Setup, system boots and passes POST with only the PS/2 keyboard plugged in and I'm back to #2.

7. Running out of ideas I ran over to Radio Shack and bought a new CR2032 battery.  Can some one explain to me why something the size of a nickel and the technological equivalent of a toaster costs $6? I took out the battery from the motherboard, waited 15 minutes and put the new one in.  I booted with the PS/2 keyboard, got the same floppy drive error as in #5.  Then I went into setup, CHANGED the time and turned off the floppy controller and was able to boot as in #2.  Powered down, plugged in a USB keyboard and…. no love.  Still freezes at the POST screen; still shows diagnostic lights 2, 3 & 4.

So I'm out of ideas and looking for help.

In particular is there a way to diagnose a problem with the USB controller or the USB ports?

I it worth it trying to remove the hard drive, DVD drive, sound card and other peripherals?  Seems to me that #2 counts them out?

Have I really eliminated a problem with the motherboard?

As an aside I have not recently added any new hardware or installed any new SOFTWARE.  I have tried plugging the USB keyboard into the port next to the NIC in the back and there is no difference.

System:
XPS 710
Intel Core 2 Duo E6600, 2.4gHz 4MB CPU,
4G RAM (1G x4)
Nvidia GeForce 8800 768mb video card
Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Sound Card
500 GB SATA Hitachi hard drive
Windows Vista 32 bit

Not sure from your post whether you have tried a different USB Keyboard or not ? ..... assuming you have .... go to Device Manager and uninstall the USB Controllers, reboot the machine and Windows will automatically reinstall them.
If there's a glitch/corruption, this may well flush it out. Quote from: Old Fart on March 11, 2009, 09:44:40 AM

Not sure from your post whether you have tried a different USB Keyboard or not ? ..... assuming you have .... go to Device Manager and uninstall the USB Controllers, reboot the machine and Windows will automatically reinstall them.
If there's a glitch/corruption, this may well flush it out.

That is true, Borrow a known working USB keyboard from someone else, then if that works, order a new keyboard from Dell, or simply buy a new PS/2 Keyboard for $5/10.So when we left our hero, he had a working computer so long as no USB devices were plugged in while the machine POSTed.  Does he have to live with plugging the keyboard in after each time?  So here's what he (I) tried last night.

8.  Brand new USB keyboard in three different USB ports.  No love.  Keyboard was a Logitech 967738-0403, about as plain jane as they come.  Tried in USB ports in the front and both the upper and lower tier in the back.

9. Disable the USB from the boot order.  Has anyone ever successfully booted from a keyboard?  What are you supposed to do - type in machine code?  Anyway, no love.

10. As suggested, tried disabling the Vista device drivers for USB.  Deleted reinstalled.  No love.  In retrospect, given the hard drive hasn't even started spinning, its unlikely to be the Vista drivers.  But, still, no love.

11. Now this is interesting.  Tried booting with a USB printer (HP Laserjet 1022) plugged in.  And it booted fine.  How very odd.  Is this a clue?  I don't know if this is important or not.

I don't really want to live with a PS/2 keyboard as I use a Microsoft ergonomic keyboard that is easier on my hands and a 5 button Logitech mouse that has a nice weight to it.

One possible thing is disabling USB legacy devices in the BIOS, but that will, of course, require you to have a PS/2 keyboard to access the BIOS12.  So I learned something new last night.  It is NOT that the printer is ok.  It turns out that that one USB port is ok.  There are 8 USB ports on the machine.  A row of four in the back (Hub#1 Ports #1-4), 2 immediately below next to the NIC (Hub#1 Ports #5&6) and then two in the front (Hub#1 Ports #7&8 ).  If the USB keyboard is plugged in to #1, then it boots.

14.  And here is another clue.  In Vista, if I go to device manager (DM) I see the following
 - USB Enhanced Host Controller
 - Standard Enhanced PCI to USB host controller
 - Unknown Device

What is interesting, is that the "Unknown Device" shows up even when there is nothing plugged in.  I tried REINSTALLING and then just disabling it to see if that fixed the problem and it doesn't.  Also note that the Unknown Device does not have a yellow question mark in the DM.  In fact it says it is working properly.  Philosophically, how do you know it is working properly if you don't even know what it is?

Also note that, per Old Fart's advice, in #10 and again last night, I disconnected all USB devices; uninstalled all of the USB drivers in the DM, rebooted and reinstalled the drivers.  The Unknown Device showed up again after reinstalling.  Physical examination of port #2 doesn't look any different than any of the others.

So basically Port #1 works; Port #2 is haunted and Ports #3-#8 only work after booting.

Interesting

Perhaps a failing USB controller?15. For those who have been following the saga this is the penultimate entry.  I left my computer on for as long as I could.  State #2 seemed to work.  It was functioning.  I lasted a week.  Then McAfee decided to update and decided that I needed to restart.  I acquiesced after being prompted every 15 minutes for 2 days.  Why does McAfee to that?  Don't they know that just makes them annoying?  How about a button guys: Don't remind me ever again!  I shut down, unplugged everything but the keyboard and restarted.  The system froze!  Uh oh!  I unplugged the keyboard and restarted.  The system still froze about 1/3 through POST with *nothing* plugged in but  the monitor.  At this point I hate it and hate DELL.  I own a doorstop.

16.  Bought a Hewlett Packard m9600.  Nuff said.

Solve : Surge Protector?

Answer»

between AUGUST and September, I will be moving to Mesa Arizona. I'm wondering will I need to still have a surge protector out there. Nope...

You can bring the one you already have with YA... But seriously, folks...take my wife...please!

If you have the surge protector, go ahead and continue to use it.  The power grid in Mesa may be stable, but lightning strikes anywhere.Lighting Strikes Everywhere in AZ, Specially during the Monsoons.
Wanna have some real fun, go to Tucson in July and check out the flash floods.
You'll wonder where the roads went They have Monsoons in Arizona? In AZ your need surge protection.
And don't travel in a storm.

Yes They have what they call the Monsoon Season beginning in July & running thru Sept
Even Las Vegas has a few famous SPOTS, along with Tucson where people drive theircar's in over their head and then say "Gee I didn't know the water was that deep.
Tucson even has a special system where when flash floods occur the whole Emerg. Resp. Team heads out & DETOURS traffic.Thread of the Month...AGREED...O.K. Then Let Us All Continue My Little Sons  Be Especially careful if You are out on the 'Patio',

Solve : computer zapped in storm-I think?

Answer»

storm  hit last night, TRANSFORMER on pole near house blew, and our electric went out  now only BIOS/CMOS screen shows up, and cannot get out of it.  Can it be fixed, or am I fried?A technician once told me that he had someone come in his shop after a storm and their computer got fried. He said he was able to fix it for them but it cost them close to $400. Swap out the power supply to make a test if it DOESNT work its the board. After you get it up & running unvest in a good surge protector. Quote from: xavier on March 27, 2009, 12:18:27 PM

Swap out the power supply to make a test if it doesnt work its the board. After you get it up & running unvest in a good surge protector.

A surge protector will only protect your electronic equipment from NORMAL electrical spikes.  In this case...you had a massive power surge and an electrical storm.  Surge protectors don't offer much protection from lightning strikes or massive electrical surges.

Your best bet is to unplug your electronic equipment during a storm (not only power CABLES, but any cables)...since lightning will find the path of least resistance to your computer...and can travel through phone/cable lines and even over your network cables.

So...to make a long story short...sure...get a surge protector...or UPS, but unplug your equipment for guaranteed protection during a thunderstorm.Having a surge protector is better than not having one.he never said it wasn't- he was merely adding that it added zero protection during a thunderstorm over not having one.

during a thunderstorm/electrical storm, having a UPS and saying it's protection from the storm is like holding a pillow in front of you when you get hit by a bus. Not particularly effective, and sure to ruffle some feathers- are you down with that?  Dah

I'm looking for a new battery for my laptop not sure if the one is draing right but at least I would then have a spare.  Its a toshiba laptop M45-S169 I GET 6 and 8 cell but i looked at mine and it said 4These batteries?
http://www.replacetree.com/satellite-m45-s169

Is your question 'why do they have a DIFFERENT number of cells' or 'can you help me find the right batter for my laptop'?

Just fyi, the 8 cell battery will have a longer operating time than the 6 cell. You may have a 4 cell battery because it was default with the laptop at the time of purchase.ah so it would be better then and wont CAUSE any hardware issues.  thats GOOD  No. No hardware issues. Solve : Jagged colored lines cover monitor?

Answer»

Very randomly my MONITOR will go from normal to being COMPLETELY covered in jagged colored lines. The lines always go left to right at an upward angle. Sometimes they are randomly colored, sometimes just grey, black, and white. I'll restart my PC and it will be fine.

When it happens I can't see ANYTHING on my monitor but the lines, and really they are more like bars instead of lines.

I haven't noticed anything that would be causing it to happen, like using a certain program or website. Its completely random ><

Could someone give me an idea of what the problem could be?

Edit: thought it might be helpful if i gave alittle info about my computer.
It's a store bought Emachine, W3107, everything is factory besides the RAM. Video card is nVidia GeForce 6100. I have XP as the OS, not sure if i need to give anything else.

Thank you for help.Remove a side panel.
Re-boot and check to see all fans are operational.
If so remove all power sources and ground yourself to the case.
Remove and re-seat the VID card.
Connect all power and re-boot and see if this changes anything...

P.S. Did you add this vid card ? ?
eMachines are notorious for weak PSU's...

Solve : Help bios beep problem threatening to leave me 60 quid out of pocket?

Answer»

I sold someone a brand new cpu (amd 4200+) about a week ago and he has bought a new motherboard(MSI K9N2GM) for it however upon installing said items his computer gives no display and a series of bios beeps (two and then six) now being familiar with the K6 K7 motherboards i seem to remember this problem not being the cpu, in fact when i had a similar problem with a "six beeper" in the k7 i seem to remember i had (rather nuubishly) not put my memory back in probably. Now my mate is claiming the problem is my unused cpu and claiming i need to pay him back by saying it cant be anything else. Do i need to pay him back? or was it his hardware? And if i do i need a cheap cpu for a K9 (as above any suggestions?really just need confirmation in writing seeing as he wont believe me pulled up the posts on AMI bios and still my fault, ive EVEN tried telling him that if the cpu is dead the bios cant start to beep but at the minute everything i do or say is wrong

If he INSTALLED it i can't say as your liable...however i know how mates can get when it comes to money.
Unless you know the BIOS for his MSI board it can't be generalised that your beep code experience means the same as what he is having...
What other components has he put into this build..;.I.E. is the RAM new or USED ?...Where was the board purchased ? ?
All i'm saying is it could be the CPU but on the other hand it could be 8 or so other things as well...Sounds like a case of Caveat_emptor, darkmajicks.

Personally if I were to sell anything to someone else, I would say thank you goodbye.

Once an item has left your possession and you no longer have an active control over what is done to it, or how it is handled, stored, transported or used, ( and any other description you could think of) the liability of its ability to perform in the required task is released from yourself and the new owner is responsible for the safe handling etc. of his new purchase.

Your friend might profess to have handled it with the expertise of a museum caretaker USING kid gloves and nurtured its every movement. All something you have absolutely no information of, nor could reasonably confirm.

On the other hand he might have thrown it in the passenger seat of the car, driven down a bumpy dirt road where it fell to the floor of his 1979 mustang convertable and was tossed around clanging into metal objects and pizza remains. Then on exiting the car, HIS new unit in hand, slipped on the wet road and dropped HIS new purchase in a puddle of water, rendering it inoperable.

I found this, here , it  may have have some jewel of insight to help you.

The views and thoughts of ImnoGuru are in no way to be construed as legal advice on this or any issue, nor are they to be used as foundation for any argument or dispute between two or more parties. If it helps anyone out there its ami bios beep codes and its two followed by six

Solve : Hp printer 3210 configuration settings?

Answer»

I bought a hp photosmart 3210 all-in-one printer in England, it uses the 363 series ink cartridges.
On my return to Australia I FIND the cartridges are the 02 series, they are exactly the same & fit perfectly but the printer will not RECOGNISE them, complaining it uses the 363 series.
Hp tell me I have to change the configuration settings & they are happy to get a techie to call me & talk me through the changes,
problem is  the first of my 363 to run out & the configuration setting changes are made I can then only use the 02 series & it will leave me with 5 part used & 6 new 363 cartridges that are totally useless,
this is such a waste not to mention the cost, does anyone know a way I can get the printer to use both series cartridges?Probably your printer and ink cartridges are region coded. This is quite common. For a number of brands & models, cartridges from one region of the world won't work in a printer coded for a different region. For example North America/South America/Europe/Asia Pacific/Africa. This is done by the printer manufacturers to stop people exploiting currency differences and regional or local pricing differences. It means they can adjust their (huge) profit margins and charge what each market will bear. It sucks. This does affect people who emigrate or move to another continent and TAKE a printer with them. You can change the region settings in the printer firmware  to use one type or the other but you can't mix them. So you'd better decide whether you want your printer to be Australian or British. Personally I would ask myself how much the printer is worth compared to a new set of cartridges and maybe buy another one locally. When I did that I bought a laser printer and hurled my inkjet in the trash. That's the trouble with MFDs, you aren't just dumping a printer, you are losing a scanner, copier & fax as well.

Thank you for your reply, ive posted this question on many forums & the only other reply was about "living upside down" I did wonder why it was set up this way with regional codes, now i Know.
As this printer is the best one ive ever owned (the photos it prints are superb) I guess il just have to buy a new set of cartridges & change the settings, it would probably cost more with postage & would be a bit of a pain to have someone in England send me a new cartridge everytime one runs out(wouldnt be so bad if they all run out at the same time) & you have to be carefull how many new cartridges you have as they can go out of date pretty quick.
Thank you again for your reply,I do appreciate it. jump on the uk ebay site you will find all you need there but custums no longer allow us aussies a gift tax the law has now changed to recoup the 400 billion dollar govt hand out coming in APRIL be aware find out the wieght of your parcel i say this because 50 GRAMS cost me $30

Solve : Funky green bars?

Answer»

I have a Dell Dimension 8300 and it randomly started doing this http://img166.imageshack.us/img166/7708/85712303.jpg the other day, it's pretty old and I've had to REPLACE quite a few parts recently, I thought the graphics card MIGHT need replacing but some one else though the memory. Is it a laptop or desktop computer? Is it a desktop or laptop?

Have you tried a different monitor to see if you get the same results...so you can rule out the monitor as the culprit?

Could be the graphics card...if you have a spare...you might want to try replacing it and CHECKING your results.

Keep us posted...It's a desktop. I haven't tried it on another monitor but I did plug my laptop in to that monitor and it worked fine.So the culprit may be the video card installed on the desktop.  Are you familiar with the inner workings of a PC?

Try this...

Turn your MACHINE off and unplug everything from the tower/desktop...including the power cord.  Protecting yourself from ESD (electrostatic discharge)...remove the video card.  Clean the inside of the case, thoroughly, with canned air (NO VACUUM CLEANER) and also clean the slot the video card was seated in.  Using a pencil eraser...clean the pins on the video card.  Re-seat the card...plug everything back in and try again.

Keep us posted...

Solve : Video Card issues on a Dell computer?

Answer»
I have a 3-year old Dell Dimension B110 with the video CARD BUILT into the mother board, and Windows XP op sys. I am trying to find a way to upgrade, because the resolution on my Dell stops at 1280 x 768, and I need 1680 x 1050 for the 20" wide screen monitor that my husband has already brought home (and can not return).

The man I talked to at Dell tech tells me that it is not GOING to help to buy a new video card, because the video card does not control the resolution pixels - that the computer, it's self will not handle this size monitor. Then he tried to talk me into buying a new 22" monitor that requires the same 1680 x 1050 resolution that I already can't get on the new monitor I already got! Something is a little fishy there!!

Can someone here fill me in with an answer- or a place to find the answer? What I need to know is...

If I buy a new card, will it be able to change the resolution to work with the new monitor?

What kind of card would I need to buy to be sure that it will work on this computer with this monitor?

ConnieFrom what i have read about your system the specs: show you dont have a pci slot or a agp to add a card.If i am wrong [reading] correct meGoing further on this 1 site tells me the board has no slots another site shows slots> B110.Have you opened the case to see if you have a agp slot?I just opened it - there are 2 slots available. And you are sure these are PSI slots and not open expansion slots for RAM?hmmmm... I am not so sure that I know the difference between the 2.

There are 3 slots together, and the center one is attached to one of the add-on slots in the back of the computer. That is the only reason I think they are not for memory. If you can tell me the difference, I will open it again.

ConniePCI slots are in the rear of the mother board and give access by unscrewing a small screw for the card to sit in.. RAM slots are located in the CENTER of the motherboardNow that I have looked for the memory cards - I know what they are --- I installed them!!

I do have 2 pci slots available. The easiest way to tell if the video card will be compatible with your mother board is to go to dells website and insert your PRODUCT ID. I, personally, won't recommend a video card.. g/lI am not really asking for a brand name or anything LIKE that - I am only asking what I need to look for, to know that it will operate my monitor properly ( 1680 x 1050 resolution ). I have never messed with this part of the computer, and I simply do not know what I am looking for.

And I would like to thank you for the help you have given me!!
ConnieConnie ,you can Google pci1680x1050 for infoThank you both very much!!

Solve : How many hard faults is acceptable in Vista/Windows 7??

Answer»

Hi guys

Just a quick q. I was looking through my TASK manager today, went to go look at my memory usage in the resource monitor...and was shocked to see 30-40 Hard Faults a second with 78% of 2GB RAM USED.
(I was running ConvertXtoDVD and Adobe Premiere Pro CS3)

I know that Hard Faults do not mean the RAM is bad, (usually) is it possible at all that it could be though? It is only a few months old.

Kurt

a "hard  fault" IIRC merely means that while ACCESSING a page of virtual memory it had to hit the disk. If it's any consolation my firefox.exe process is currently sitting at just over 8 million hard faults, and explorer is at just over 1 million.Ah ok so just to confirm, it WOULD never mean you RAM was bad?

I mean I don't get any bluescreens or anything, so go figure Quote from: Kurtiskain on March 26, 2009, 03:53:41 AM

Ah ok so just to confirm, it would never mean you RAM was bad?

I mean I don't get any bluescreens or anything, so go figure

No- just as a "Page Fault" isn't usually bad because the Virtual Memory Manager just scoops up the data from the swap.

Those familar with Windows 9x may remember the "Illegal Operation" dialog, this usually resulted from a page fault, when a program accesses memory outside it's ADDRESS space- usually by trying to dereference a null (0) pointer.

If you get a lot of "this program has encountered a problem..." type crashes then that could mean bad RAM. Hard faults are not really a "bad" thing per se.

and now my Firefox.exe has over 9 million page faults in task manager...  Well, Now I know why I was having so many crashes before I maxed the RAM at 4 Gig

Solve : usb v mouse conflict??

I have a homebuilt, Asrock MB, ATI graphics, legal and updated XP Pro OS. Epson printer via usb, system has RUN very efficiently for a couple of years until very recently I have had the following occur - if I insert a 2gb usb memory stick into any of the six usb ports (2 front, 4 rear) the microsoft optical mouse shuts down; if I insert a 32/64mb usb mem card the mouse continues to work! I have tried different  2gb sticks for the same result, XP tells me all hardware/drivers are working and are the BEST available. Any HELP as to where I should go next please.

Thanks

KiwijimDo these sticks have the U3 software installed ? ?

Have you tried re-installing the mouse software ? ?Unable to TELL if sticks are U3 software- how do you do that? Nonetheless, following your advice I downloaded and installed Mr Gates' latest intellimouse offering and got no difference. However when on the microsoft website I saw an article about usb part of which said to go into device manager and 'identify hardware changes'. This I did and lo! the 2 mb sticks work - but only one at a time - probably a power issue now. I have no need to USE multiples so I'll settle for that!

Thanks patio!Good News...wasn't my fix but glad it worked out for you...

Solve : hey can somebody PLEASE help?????

Answer»

hey EVERYONE this is my first time posting here and i have a serious computer problem that is quite possibly the most annoying thing on this planet. i have a dell dimension 4300s intel pentium 4, 1.4 ghz. 1 gig sd ram. so here's the problem, about 80% of the time ill be on a site, for example youtube which requires flash and shockwave and all that. after about 5 minutes it will say plugin failed shockwave error and programs will stop responding and the bsod will come up with a different error message each time. most of the time it'll be like pfn_list_corrupt, win32k.sys, bad_pool_caller there's more but those are the most common.  it will run fine if i'm just running msn messenger but when i go to start a program like my browser that's when the FUN begins i've reinstalled my OS about 30 different times so i know its not a software issue i've tried every type of windows xp out there. so i'm really out of ideas, this has been happened for about a year now and i would really appreciate any suggestions anyone would have. i just recently replaced the ram and it didn't help either...so if ANYONE out there can maybe shed some LIGHT on what's going wrong i'd be more than grateful.

thanks

oh and a few more things i forgot to mention..not only does my browser randomly close its about any program that just randomly closes and i have no idea why? it will run fine until i run multiple programs so any help is HIGHLY appreciated.

thanks againHave you run memory tests on the machine??

http://www.memtest.org/yes about a month ago...and i had like 100 errors on my old ram which was 512 mb and i have since replaced them with 2 sticks of new ram...but i havent tested it YET with the new ram....could it possibly be an overheating issue? that is my best guess. When you are playing games or OPENING some programs is there something popping in your system tray saying that your computer is low on virtual memory. This happens last year in one of my computer and the thing that i did is i reformat my computer and change my hard disk and that's it no more bsod popping.nope programs just randomly close and my computer randomly reboots and goes to the BSODs. Oh and kurtiskain i just ran a memtest for about 45 minutes and it showed 12,205 errors..what does this mean?i just installed new ram about 3 weeks ago...so it can't be the ram? what else could it be?

Solve : Fan on chip stopped.?

Answer» HELLO and thank you for looking at this problem.
I have an AMD Athalon 1 gig ram 260 odd C: Drive and Windows XP Pro.

The install was a clean install on a clean drive.

The fan on the chip was on the way out for some time, being noisy, so I threw a bandaide at it, (oiled it), and true to form it died some ( long ) time later.

I have a box of bits and pieces of computers Ive gathered over the years, fans included.

Can I put any fan on the chip or does it have to be an original AMD fan?

I KNOW all the dedicated people will say " IT HAS TO BE AN AMD FAN" "DONT DO IT" "RELIABILITY ISSUES WILL ARISE" and so on, but REALLY does it?

Thank you for your EDUCATED input. ImnoGuru. The fan doesn't have to be stock...as long as it keeps the CPU temp down, but most importantly...reliable.Yep I thought that might be the case. Thanks GlitchPC You're welcome...Yep works fine and is a lot quieter now.

I was worried about correct voltages and so on but it all seems fine. ( no smoke leaving the unit so far)
Thank you ImnoGuru

Solve : LCD display, went blank?

Answer»

I have a Gateway FPD1975W 19" LCD Monitor.  You know how the story goes...   It was working fine and then one day, it just stopped working.

When I cold boot my computer I can see the BIOS Version appear and I can see Windows boot up, but the screen simply GOES DARK within seconds of entering the Windows log-in screen.  Moving the mouse or pressing keys on the keyboard does not help the picture come back.

If I attempt to enter CMOS it does the same thing.  When the BIOS Version is displayed during start-up and I attempt to enter CMOS, the screen GOES DARK at the CMOS log-in screen (in which I have set a password).

If I unplug the VGA cable and plug it back in, the display comes back for about 8 seconds and then goes dark again.

I tried plugging the monitor into another working computer and it does the same thing. hi.. i could be completely off the mark but it sounds like the default resolution of your os is DIFFERENT to that of your screen (in which case your screen is rather weird)

do you have the ability to try another screen with the same pc?

and the pcs you tried the 1 screen on do they have the same setup (like same os and settings?)

Try another VGA cable. Quote from: darhblader on March 25, 2009, 05:10:11 PM

They do not have the same OS settings........The LCD monitor is used with Vista, and I tried that monitor on a Windows XP system and as I said, it did not correct the problem.

I hooked up a CRT monitor to the Vista machine and it works fine.
I tried different resolutions while the CRT was connected and then plugging the LCD back in to see if it fixed anything.........but NO GO on that

Try another VGA cable.

Unfortunately, I don't have an extra VGA cable laying around that I can pull off another computer.  The only other monitors I have are CRTs, and I cannot pull the VGA cable off of them.

EDIT:  I have inspected the cable, HOWEVER, wondering if my cat chewed through or clawed part of it, but I did not notice any thing wrong..sometimes the problems with the cables are internal

my first step would be try another cable, if that doesnt work then its most likely something to do with the screen

does it get to exactly the same place each time or is it more it stops working at exactly the same time after turning it on

if it stops working say after 30 seconds roughly each time then i'd say its a manufacturing fault with the screen in which case i'd return it

but if it happens at a specific point on boot each time then i'd say its definately the settings (but dont TAKE my word for it)

unfortunately i dont have the experience to help you any further mate

andyIncidentally, the LCD monitor does have somewhat of a defect, in the power button.  I have to push it in VERY hard to make it turn on, when it should turn on with a light push/click.The Gateway web site doesn't accept the Serial Number off of the LCD monitor.  I tried calling the number listed on the monitor and it said that all circuits are busy and to call back later....

Something tells me that I should probably not purchase anything else from Gateway, again. I just checked the continuity of the 15 individual wires running through the VGA cable, using my multimeter.  There doesn't appear to be any brakes in the cable.

Any other ideas?

Solve : help my harddisk is "playing music"?

have a very BIG problem here , i have a old HD with photos in i want to burn it on dvd.
so i connect my HD to a transpotable box i have , but when it starts up is play a little sound on about 3-5 sek and then stop all activitet on it , what is that ?
the HD is a maxtor diamondMAXPlus 9
please help me :-)

TomWelcome to the CH forums.

How do you connect the drive to your transpotable box?And what exactly is this transportable box ? ?

I'm sorry. I couldn't resist Hi
i am connecting with a ide-cable in the box and from the box to my comp. is the connection with usb-cable i have no problems with other HD only this on that play a small sound when it starts up , can't get access to it
So, I take it that you are putting the HARD drive into an enclosure and that the enclosure connects to your pc via a usb port.  Have you checked the jumper setting on the drive, do you get any error messages, is the disk recognized in BIOS, device manager?

The sound you hear is probably an audible error alert from the OS (you haven't told us which OS you are using), is there an alert message in any of the Event Logs?

Some further info on your system would be helpful, please read this..

I recently installed Windows Vista on my computer, and I want to get rid of it and get XP back. I have tried everything such as FORMATTING the disk drive, trying to enter BIOS setup, trying to boot from my Windows XP disk, and nothing works. I tried all the buttons to attempt to enter the BIOS setup such as F2 and everything I even looked up on here how to do it and I tried everything and mostly I got nothing or it just got stuck at a black screen forever to where I would have to restart the computer. I really need to figure out how to be able to boot my computer from my CD drive and I'm completely stuck, since everything I tried failed.[By the way I tested to make sure the CD worked and it did, it just won't let me run it from start up, I'm also positive my CD drives are fine.] I apologize if this seems like a stupid question but I really need help. My computer is a Dell Dimension 4550 if that helps at all.Okay. We need to try alot of thing on this. Please keep posting as to what is happening.
FIRSTLY, restart the computer and hit F12 when you see the Dell logo. Select one time boot menu and change the boot device to CD/DVD drive and then insert the CD and try BOOTING. Let me KNOW fast. I did that, and nothing.  Quote from: clw1990 on March 24, 2009, 11:56:15 AM

What is the state of the pc right now? You mentioned that you have formatted the hard drive, is there an operating system on it now?I meant to put I attempted to format it sorry. No problem, so Vista is still your current OS at this time? If that is the case, I would check add/remove programs and see if Windows Vista is listed in there. If Vista is anything like Windows XP, you should have the OPTION to un-install Vista which would then bring you back to your previous OS. Yeah it's my current OS. It's not on the add/remove programs list.
Does windows detect that the vista cd is in the cd-rom drive? Quote
trying to boot from my Windows XP disk

we need to explore this option more thoroughly. What exactly happens when you attempt to boot from the XP disc? It should display "press any key to boot from CD..." at which point you should- press any key.

I'm not sure if it's detecting it, I know the CD and the CD drives are fine though.. but it doesn't say "Press any key to boot from CD" when I start it up.  Quote from: skotto on March 24, 2009, 02:07:14 PM

Why would Vista be listed in Add/Remove Programs ? ?    If memory serves me correctly, it was at some point listed in add/remove programs so that the end user could revert back to their previous OS.  I remember this being a feature when XP first launched. Microsoft may have since removed this.

Solve : Corrupt BIOS?

Answer»

I tried updating my BIOS the other day and my PC froze during the procedure. I now have no BIOS. Please help!!Consult motherboard manual for BIOS recovery procedure. If not available, either remove the BIOS chip and get it flashed with the correct BIOS, or else order a new one. If the chip is soldered to the motherboard, specialist skills are needed to remove it. In this case, motherboard replacement may be the most effective option.

motherboard replacement may be the most effective option.

sorry for your loss You could read the below site and give it a try.

http://www.technibble.com/how-to-recover-from-a-bad-bios-update/this is why BIOS updates should only be performed when necessary for proper functionality. Why were you attempting to flash the BIOS in the first place? It was a suggestion as to a possible fix for windows not seeing my audio hardware. Also BIOS temps were wrong.A BIOS flash to fix a Windows issue is ALWAYS a bad idea...but you've learned that already...
How did you determine the temps were wrong ? ?If Windows was not seeing your audio hardware, there's the possibility that BIOS was configured with the onboard audio disabled.

Were you referring to onboard audio or a separate sound card?hi all,
I have somewhat same problem as mentioned in this topic.. I had window media centre EDITION 2005 before.. it CRASHED so I updated it to winxp sp3.. after the fresh installation of the windows everything worked fine except the audio...I again changed it to SP2 yet no sound...it is onboard sound so when I checked in the BIOS it was enabled and in the control panel aslo it was enabled. when I play the MUSIC it plays but no sound in the output and at the sametime I changed BIOS battery but bios doesn't save and I have to change it everytime I open it..

Please suggest me as I have:

Microsoft Windows XP Professional
Version 2002
Service Pack 2
AMD Athlon(TM) 64 Processor 2800+,
1.80 GHZ,
704mb of RAM

MSI Board K8M800 8237 (MSI AGP 8X) board....

question here........shall I stick with the SP2 (if it is beacuse of the Windows version) or roll back to Media Centre Edtion 2005??

I will be very happy if you suggest me.....

Solve : Graphical Mistakes?

I run Windows XP service pack 3, not "real"
XFX nForce 680i LT SLI Socket 775 Motherboard
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6700 2.66Ghz Socket 775 CPU
Seagate 250GB Serial ATA w/NCQ 7200/16MB/SATA-3G
OCZ SLI 2048MB PC6400 DDR2 800MHz (2x1024MB)
NVidia 8800 GT
Realtek integrated sound card
Antivirus regularly run is Ad-Aware SE Personal, Windows Defender, Spybot S&D, SUPERAntiSpyware

When i start up my computer, everything looks regular. "Verifying DMI POOL data..." etc. My motherboard doesn't recognize my floppy drive, and so tells me to hit F1 to continue without one. The loading bar doesn't appear as it should, [][][][], but rather blurred, :;:;:::: First notice of error. The next screen shows many things, with random misplaced parenthesis all over the screen. The next screen is windows start up, everything proceeding fine, but with visual mess-ups. My desktop appears with 4, 1 inch.. rhombuses, of squiggly blue lines, side by side, but spaced differently. These blue lines are on the desktop, and appear on every window, differently according to color under them. I believe this is a hardware problem because of the signs it shows before windows is booted. There Was a time when everything appeared fine. If anybody has any ideas or solutions, it would be greatly appreciated. This has been going on for a while and i'm completely puzzled. If you're wondering, performance is not affected At All. The only issue is display. Sure, it's not a Big deal, but something is not behaving properly and i don't like that.

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y76/BaishCao/bluemessups.jpg
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y76/BaishCao/bluemessups2.jpg

look closely at the top of the screen for the blue parts.

I loaded BIOS Settings to default, and disabled floppy disk, though F1 command to continue without when booting still required.
All throughout BIOS is parenthesis still

Same errors as in normal mode Are in safe mode, except a little different - straighter squiggles in the blue squares

I have updated my graphics driver to no success.

BIOS recognizes my floppy drive. When i try to remove my floppy drive from the boot order the boot menu closes and goes on regularly, still checking on startup.

Today i booted my computer and instead of the normal parentheses errors it was MUCH more effected: red, green, cyan, yellow, maybe other colors (just woke up) columns up and down the screen, but not entirely. This includes the regular SYMPTOMS. Does this give more evidence for a specific problem?

I believe it's a hardware problem because it is shown before windows loads. Problems vary occasionally, exampled by today's bootup.
Remove the vid card and clean the CONTACTS with isopropyl alcohol...use a can of compressed air to blow out the slots.
Replace the vid card.
As always when working inside the case remove all power sources and take anti-static precautions...This did not work, and symptoms have gotten worse.
Performance is affected. Certain graphics in games will not appear correctly; after minimizing, when maximized graphics will be distorted (in a full screen game).
This is really irritating me. Any other ideas? Quote

This may be the issue right here...You mean pirated by that rightI don't think that is the issue because the problem has gotten worse over time. When i first built my computer everything ran in top top shape. Also, the longer it has been running throughout the day (the hotter it gets), a mistake is more likely to happen upon maximizing a minimized game (does not Always distort). Yeah i mean pirated by not real.It could be overheating then.  Blow all the dust out with compressed air and put twistie ties in the fans or weed wacker wire or something. Blow out all the dustAll the dust has been blown out and cables moved out of the way, CPU runs 42-48 C regular, up to 60 with the game, GPU at 60 regular, 64 with the gameStrange... Mabye its your whole graphics card then is all I can think of Quote from: Autarch on February 28, 2009, 06:58:42 PM

MS is getting really good at this...that's all i'll say.But the errors are visible before windows even loads..I blame the gpu thenI'm going to put it in the other PCIE slot today and see if that makes a difference. I'll let you know how that goes.didn't work.get a new video card.

Solve : network controller card dead???...maybe mobo? please help!!?

Answer»

Hi everyone

i wasn't sure if this should go here, or under 'networking', but im almost positive it's all about the hardware, so i put it here.  I apologize if this is in the wrong forum...

Ok, so here's my problem -  I have an HP laptop - the model is pavillion tx1000 - that has been working well on the same network for over a year now, and the wireless crapped out on me a couple of days ago.  I went to check the network connection, and it said that there are no networks to connect to.  I refreshed the modem and the router, but that didnt help. I restarted my computer, but that didnt help either.  So, I turned on the other computers on the network, and they all work just fine.

I ran a diagnostic and it said that my Nvidia network controller card is not installed, or it's drivers are outdated....so I went into device manager, where it said that the card (or cards? - there were 4 items listed under networking. I know that one is a network card - Im honestly not sure what the others are, but I checked them all) are all working fine, and all the drivers are up to date.

So, now Im really confused. I cant connect to a network because, according to my diagnostics, my network card isnt working, but according to device manager, it's working just fine. How do you fix a problem that doesnt really need to be fixed? Can a network card be replaced in a notebook, or is it integrated with the mobo? . . .Is it just time for a new laptop?

Also, I dont know if this is RELAVENT, but this laptop is notorious for running really, really hot!!  (I've heard about people who have literally burned themselves by putting their hand too CLOSE to the exhaust vent.)  System shuts down from the heat after running for about 10 minutes.  Even with a cooler mat, it gets way hot - the mat keeps it from shutting down, but it still feels burning hot to the touch....could the heat have fried the network card?   Or could it have damaged part of the motherboard, but left the rest of it fully functional?

I'd appreciate any help at all!  I'd love to get back online, on my own computer
thanks a bunch!
-sara
Have you tried connect to that network with different laptop?is it connected?
Just to make sure its not from the modem / switch/ etc.yes, i checked the connection itself with a desktop and two other laptops - they all worked perfectly.

not a great sign, huh?Are you using Wifi or Cables?
I suggest to try uninstall all of the network / modem related DRIVER, restart, then go to

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?product=3185028&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&lang=en&cc=us

select your OS and install the driver for modem / network hopefully it works.

For the heat problems, can you feel the fan inside the laptop spinning?or possible too many dust in it, so you need to clean it up by yourself or send it to the shop.
Im using wifi.

I can uninstall the drivers, but how do i follow that link for the reinstall, when I cant get online?  I dont have a floppy drive to use.  The laptop I borrowed to get online here only has a dvd rom...its a pretty old laptop

Yes, I can feel the fan. And its loud as *censored*.  I cleaned out the dust a while back, but there wasnt that much in there, and it didnt do much good.  The laptop I have just runs unbelievably hot - not just mine, but this particular model runs really hot. well, somehow you have to dowload it then transfer to the laptop via USB Flash drive or burn it to a dvd rom.Floppy wont work since the driver far to big, how about externet HDD?
i'll give it a shot with a flash drive.
thanksYou're Welcome, thats what we do here, giving ideas..
Tell us what happened then
