Did Vista come on the computer?  Or did you buy it separately?  And in either case do you the restore/install DVD or CD? Also, did your computer LOSE power abrubtly, like a power failure or anything?  Can you give the exact wording of the first line of the error?come ALREADY installed with vista  the disks i have say they are already intalled on the computerthe first line is; no boot device available

What did you do just prior to the problem? Any new software or hardware?

Solve : Battery/AC power display error?

Answer»

Hi,

I have a TOSHIBA X305 laptop which thinks it's running on battery power when it's plugged into AC power and says it's plugged in when it's not. The only exception is when it gets low on power and I plug it back in, it says it's plugged in and charging. Once it reaches a certain threshold however (about 90% charged), it reverts to the "battery power" icon.

This problem began when I installed Windows XP instead of Vista which it came with.

Any ideas on how to fix this?

-darryl1.  Quote from: dworley on March 09, 2009, 02:05:36 PM

I have a Toshiba X305 laptop...

Is this a Tobshiba Qosmio X305 laptop?  And if so, which one:
    X305-Q701
    X305-Q705
    X305-Q7051
    X305-Q706
    X305-Q707
    X305-Q708
    X305-Q710
    X305-Q711
    X305-Q715
    X305-Q720
    X305-Q7201
    X305-Q725

2.  After you installed Windows XP, did you go to the manufacturer's website to download and install the motherboard drivers?

It's a Q725.  I have installed all of the drivers.  Some are from Tosh.  Others are fromt he orginal manufactorers  No unknown devices.Well you might take a look at the FOLLOWING two links.  The first one addresses similar problem with Windows ME and Toshiba models available in the year 2003.  It was resolved by installing "Toshiba Power Saver Utility".
Microsoft AC/DC icon on the TASK bar does not change when power changes are made

The second link was closest download (30 June 2008) I found that refers to a Toshiba Utility.  It is applicable to your operating system and Toshiba model number, but I was unable to FIND description for what it does.  I think this download is worth a try:
Toshiba Software Upgrade for Windows Vista / XP

Since laptops contain proprietary hardware, it might make sense that Toshiba would provide a utility to ADDRESS power status.

Basically, I think you're pretty much on your own unless you want to talk with a Toshiba representative.

Solve : Where has all my Hard Drive space gone??

Answer»

My laptop has started to tell me that I'm running low on HARD Drive space and I can't understand why.

I've looked at all the places I have saved stuff and they don't COME any where near to taking up the space of my whole Hard Drive.
The programmes I have on it wouldn't bring it any where close either.

And what's even more CONFUSING is that the folder I keep most of my big stuff in (videos etc) it is saying has over double the amount in it than it actually does.
I really don't get it.

Has this happened to anyone else?
Does anyone know why this is happening or what i can do about it?

How do I look up exactly where all the space has gone?

Thank you for taking the TIME to read this!

Solve : TV Tuners in computers?

HI all, I have a QUESTION maybe more than a topic. I have a Toshiba Qosmio G-15 w/ a TV tuner and was wondering whether or not the tuner will be able to read the new digital tv signals w/ just an antenna, or if i will have to get a stupid converter for it, or break down an get cable. Tag ur it, thankspfor, Welcome to the CH forums. The key phrase in your question is "w/just an antenae".The answer to that is yes you will require a converter box (unless your onboard tv tuner in the computer is a digital tuner--which i DOUBT it is).To assist you in your quest for an answer here are 2 links that ADDRESS the issue'

Solve : USB host controller Vs USB root hub?

Answer»

What is the difference between usb HOST controller and usb root hub in device manager.

In my computer, there are two USB ports at front panel and FOUR USB ports at REAR panel.

are they all different? The controller runs the hubs...
I believe it's up to 4 hubs per controller.
Are you having issues ? ?No, I don't have any issue

do you mean by hub a port where we insert USB MASS storage device?

and by hub the internal HARDWARE which control the functionality of these ports?

In my computer there are  6 USB ports (hubs), then how many host controller there may be?

Solve : Still running slowly?

Answer»

I have just recently installed a new graphics card (Nvidia GeForce 9800 GTX+) and it works fine.
the temps are good under load about 45-50 degrees. but the frame rates when i play world of warcraft are terrible. it stays at around 20fps and drops to 10 at often intervals

what could be causing this? i have 4gbs of ram and a 3ghz processor which is well above the recommended specs.

the fan also starts to GO nuts once the CPU starts working at higher levels which never HAPPENED before.

any help will be greatly appreciatedWhat temperatures does it reach when you're playing WOW?

Any other games you can try it out on? How do they perform?

Have you tired playing WOW with lower settings?

Did you install the Graphics Card DRIVERS with its CD?it goes to 50 degrees

they work fine but the same problem persists

yea the FPS stays the same at around 20

it didnt come with one
Is hardware acceleration set to full?

Start, control panel, display, settings, advanced, troubleshoot,

If you have installed the latest video DRIVER for your video adapter and you continue to experience graphic issues with the Graphics Hardware Acceleration slider set to ‘Full’, try experimenting by reducing the acceleration by one notch and checking the results.

If it didn't come with a CD, what driver have you installed if any?

Anyway, you should download the latest driver and see if that fixes your problem.
http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-usi allready have those ones, but not to worry im getting an upgrade for my PC soon im going to install the new hardware and see if the problem persists, if it does ill let you know

thanks for all the help guys

Solve : 486 issue?

Answer»

Okay so any way I was going threw fopplies and found ms-dos 6.22.  The thing is that I'm still getting faliure fixed disk 0.  I ASSUME thats the hd.  The thing is I CHANGED out the drive.  Connected it right and still the same thing 2gb maxtor. If you changed it out and what you put in was a 2 GB Maxtor, you swapped one VERY OLD hard (fixed) drive for another VERY OLD hard drive. Surprise surprise it doesn't work either.

When will you GIVE UP with all this old junk that belongs in a trash dump?

Cause Maxtor solves everything...even on drives it wasn't written for....Boot to the first floppy and type in sys C:\ and hit Enter and see what happens...?  It works except maybe the drive thats in there.  Cause its classic and getting rid of it is pointless if I can use it for something instead of haveing it sit around or something.  No its just that I attucally have LESS trouble with maxtor then WD were it hasnt showed in the post but they worked else were and spinned up.I did discover something it gives me two beeps during start.  Cant say about the other machine.Wow, some things never change around here, do they?

I assume this machine is discussed in another thread that I can't be bothered to look up. What does this have to do with a "486 issue"? Sounds like it should be called "hard drive issue" and some more details should be provided.its not the hard drive for the eight or sixth time and I dont have time right know to deal with your crap.Nice cover story regarding your new MS Dos 6.22. Well, it's right there.

Quote
faliure fixed disk 0

That's what the error generally means.

You can go ahead and replace every other component to confirm that the HD is the culprit, but since the PC is letting you know the issue it's encounteringyou should go with that.

properly jumpered? Good IDE cable? Enough power to the drive?

The fact that the issue still occurs with another HD may eliminate that actual HD (except in the circumstance Dias alluded to, in which both drives have failed as a result of age), but it doesn't eliminate the other requisites such as power, cabling, and ATA configuration.

Do you have S.M.A.R.T enabled? If so try disabling it. most 486 BIOS screens have a load of HDD related settings.

Start with a known working HDD that did not have an OS installed on it from a different machine....

This however would be a novel approach to how you've done it in the past.I cant say till I look at it.  The 2 gb works fine.  No Carbon if I had you be the first to know.  My dad has a copy as well as lotus 1,2,3 and word perfect.

Solve : Cruzer Flash Drive not detecting?

Answer»

I have a Cruzer 1.0 GB Micro Scan Disk flash drive and Windows VISTA.  The PROBLEM is that when I insert the flash drive into the USB port (I have tried different ports and one other computer with XP) the light will come on and then go off and the computer does not detect the drive.

I did go to my computer and the disk manager, but the flash drive did not show up.

I am out of ideas, can anyone help?

Did you try GOING to the cruzer web site and downloading the drivers for the device?Does it work in any other machines ? ?In his opening statement he said he tried in another computer. Quote from: chevronman on March 07, 2009, 03:07:07 PM

Did you try going to the cruzer web site and downloading the drivers for the device?

Thanks for the reply.  No, but it has worked on my computer before without any issues.  I have had it for about one year, this is the first issue I have had with it.  But I will try that. I downloaded a driver for a Cruzer Micro and RAN it.  However, the first step asks me to "Please insert a Sandisk compatible U3 driver" I inserted my flash drive, but it will not let me proceed.

I believe that the driver to launch the flash drive was always on the flash drive its self. As it worked on my school's computer without having to INSTALL a driver from Cruzer. Were you using the same os on the computers at school? Did you check in the device manager to see if there was a problem with the usb's?

Here is a link to sandisk. There are two different drivers for your cruzer one with u3 and one without.

Thanks again.  I checked the device manager, it says all the USB's are working properly.  The computer at school has XP as the os. I download the driver for a u3 flash drive, which is what I have.

Solve : DVD/CD player no longer communicating with computer?

Answer»

I just noticed today that my DVD drive is no LONGER correctly communicating with my computer.
On the one hand it appears to still be getting power from the computer since when I insert a disk it will spin and the green light on the front will light up; however the drive is no longer listed in My Computer and if I TRY something like a DVD and then run a DVD player the player will not detect the disk either.

In addition if I leave a disk in it when turning on the computer the startup will hang in the early stages (on the black screen where there is the flashing underscore( _ ) symbol). Removing the disk will CORRECT this problem and the computer will  continue to turn on as normal after that.

So its still talking to the computer - just not all the way. I have made no changes to my system in the last few days (no new hardware or software barring updates to things like AVG) so I am at a loss for what has happened. My DxDiag is attached to this post - anyone got any ideas?

[attachment deleted by admin]One of these may help:
1. Uninstall the drive through Device Manager.
Restart computer. The drive will be automatically reinstalled.
or...
2. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060
Restart computer.
or...
3. Download, and run Restore Missing CD Drive patch
Double click on cdgone.zip to unzip it.
Right click on cdgone.reg, click Merge.
Accept registry merge.
Restart computer.
or...
4. Go to Device Manager, click a "+" sign next to IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers.
You'll see two items:
- ATA Channel0 (or Primary Channel)
- ATA Channel1 (or Secondary Channel)
Right click on each of them, and click Uninstall. Confirm.
Restart Windows. They'll be automatically reinstalled. Thanks - will try them out and report back!OK I am trying method 3 at the moment - also I appear to be having a problem with methods 1 and 4.
With method 1 I don't appear to have a listing for the drive *unless I am looking in the wrong place*
With method 2 I also don't appear to have the two listings you mention - attached is a screen dump of the device manager view that I get:

[attachment deleted by admin]Methods 1, and 2 - fine.huh? how do you mean - that its fine that the method is not POSSIBLE or that it is possible and I am looking for the wrong name?

Also method 3 failed to work - now trying 2.
In addition during startup the screen that appears black with loading text on it near the start (which for me appears for only fraction of a second) stats that it can't detect and drives - I can't say more than that since it really does only last for a moment before the computer continues to load

edit also the linked microsoft method stats that its for Xp - I assume that it will still work for vista?1 - if drives are not there, you try other methods
2 - if those entries are not there, that's good.

Yes, it works for Vista.hmm it appear not to work for me
I have tried the first part of their fix (the download) and something loads, but nothing happens
will try the more manual approach

edit - err  where is the Registry Editor?Start>Run, type in:
regedit
Click OK.sorry not been back for a few days!
I tried the changes and still no luck with things. The drive was still not being noticed. I did pester a friend though and he suggested that it could be due to the Bios getting something messed up - going into the Bios it seemed that the computer was booting up the disk drive before the harddisk - finding out that the drive was not a harddisk with the OS on it and THUS ignoring it.
Setting the boot order to have the main drive first has now solved the problem

still thanks for your time and help Bronie Good job
However, it looks like you need new DVD drive....

Solve : Does this look good for my new Comp??

I want to buy and build a new computer but have never done it on my own before. Before I buy all the Hardware from Newegg, I thought I would list them on here so anyone can warn me if I am making a mistake. Any advice is appreciated.

Hard Drive: just moving old HD to new comp

Also, since 32bit windows only recognizes up to 3gig ram I NEED to upgrade. I have XP HOME right now. Should I upgrade to 64bit XP or go to 64bit Vista? Thanks for any help.Nice! I would go for the 64bit vista because it has dx 10.  Also the old hard drive could be a huge bottleneck because it could be ide.  Any hard drive is a bottleneck no matter what though.  I would go for a sata driveActually it is IDE! I thought it was a SATA but after your post I double checked.

Western Digital Caviar SE WD3200JB 320GB 7200 RPM 8MB Cache IDE Ultra ATA100

Guess I need to add a hard drive to my list. What would be the best way to transfer the data from old to new HD?Use the old hard drive as a slave.  Install your os on the new hard drive FIRST.  You can use the old one as extra storage tooIDE has a maximum throughput of 133Mbps.

most hard drives never exceed this; so how it would be a bottleneck confuses me.its a bottleneck to the whole computer its slow finding data and stuffyes but IDE can only be maxed out by the highest end, most expensive drives- so saying that switching to a SATA interface will speed it up is a specious claim. Hmm, I've been using that word a lot lately...But it would help transfer rates Quote from: computeruler on March 06, 2009, 11:34:31 PM

Proof?does that mean the stupid people on the interment where lieing againWhat?Nvm I just need to stop listening to what all these people tell meSo should I just get an adapter and forget about getting a SATA drive right now?you dont need an adapterYeah stupid me. Your right, I just checked the specs on the MoBo and it has a PATA. I was thinking it didn't have any.

Solve : A: Drive Failure?

Answer»

Hello, I have another computer, pretty old by todays standards, but good enough for kids to plays games or learners to use. It has Windows 98, pentium chip, cd drive and a 4 gig IDE drive. The computer had trouble booting up and it took several try's to load all the drivers and update the system. I used the win 98 CD but the computer couldnt find lots of files on the Win 98 CD. I think its because the O/S isnt the same as the Win98 CD that it cant find the files. I dont know.
Anyway ....
I finally got it to boot normally and start but still a lot of drivers arent there.
The computer doesnt read the A: Drive at all.
In my computer, it shows as A: but when I load a disk in it the computer says drive is inaccessible, not ready.
I went through all the previous suggestions for an A: Drive not WORKING, even deleted the drive in device manager, rebooted so on and still it dont work.
So I thought, OK I'll INSTALL Windows 2000, that way it will get all the drivers it needs and see the A: Drive and reinstall it. Should cure the problem.

Well Ive found out that the C: Drive has been partitioned into three parts.
C: is the O/S Win98 on a 1 gig partition
D: is a 1 gig partition, and
E: is a 2 gig partition then a small amount of unallocated is the remainder.

Now, here's another problem for me, during the install of Win 2000 the screen comes up with a selection of (see photo)
1/ Format partition and use NTFS file system
2/ Format partition and use FAT file system
3/ Convert the partition to NTFS
4/ Leave the file system in tact ( no changes)

The thing is, I dont know what the difference is between FAT and NTFS and I didnt know if the C: Drive had enough space on it to load Win2000, so I decided to install Win2000 on the D: partition. ( maybe thats wrong to do that too, because I'll end up with 2 (two) O/S's on the drive and the Win98 is damaged.)
I really wanted to upgrade the Win98 to Win2000, not actually a real new install, but the system (Win98) is so damaged that it keeps locking up during the upgrade and fails to complete.
All this just to get the A: drive working

Well I suppose I should format the drive C: and install the Win2000 as the O/S, but what to use Fat or NTFS and if I format the C: will it also format the whole drive?? ... ie; C, D and E: the whole 4 1/2 Gig? or just the 1 Gig known as C:?

Could somebody please impart their infinite wisdom or knowledge so that I might get this computer operating.
Thank you for your help ImnoGuru.

[attachment deleted by admin]Check out this video for an explanation of the file systems.

http://www.professormesser.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=145I'd go with NTFS and install to C:...
When you format a partition it doesn't touch the other partitions...
Of course this is in theory in the PC world which is why good backups are always a great thing to have...

You will be very happy with Win2k...most solid OS to ever come out of Redmond...Hmmmm , wellllll  that worked ... sort of... I installed the new O/s and it all works ok... just it doesnt READ the A drive  !!!
Now it actually sees the A Drive, the light stays on all the time on the A Drive though.
So I fiddled with cables and physical DRIVES, but I cant get the drive to read a disk.

I pulled the cable off from the mobo and reversed it and back again, off the A drive and reversed it and back again changed another A drive and tested it all again but still cant get the A drive to read a disk.

When Im in my computer and I hover the mouse over the drive icons the image comes up with the contents of the drive C: D: CD: but the A: Drive doesnt, and when I click on the icon the computer screen displays "Insert a disk"
Does ANYONE have any Ideas to try and resolve this issue for me to try please? You need to reverse the end at the drive, not the one at the motherboard. Also, make sure your drive is connected AFTER the twist in the cable.Thank you quaxo, thats a good thought. I tried most all the combinations I could think of and yet sometimes the simple things ellude me.
I'll give that a try and see where we end up.
Im pretty sure Ive got the twist at the correct end though.
You never know maybe I just cant see the forest for the trees.Quaxi is right- if the light on the floppy is always on the FDD connector at the drive end is upside down.Wonderful help quaxo, just goes to show you that you can try too HARD to get something simple working.

Turned out it was the User, part:  ID TEN T.

BC_Programmer thanks for the input too. I just must have got so confused with desperation frustration.

Thanks everyone for your help.

I BOUGHT a music album to put on my iTunes. When I put this specific album in my CD Drive it spins a little then STOPS, it spins a little again and then stops. I checked other music CD's and they work fine. So I though it would be the CD. I put the CD that wasn't working in my XBOX360 and TWO other computers and the computers read it fine. What is wrong lol I have no idea at all.Can you STILL read that CD in the first computer?

Solve : Computer wiping out my hard-drives??

Answer»

I was running Windows XP on a Dell Dimension 4400 Pentium 4 and I've been scanning my computer REGULARLY with AVG 8.0 and Ad-Aware until yesterday, with no problems.

My computer just became very slow, and then I noticed my slave drive just disappeared from My Computer. I tried to restart my computer but it would boot anymore saying no OS or boot failure.

I took a hard drive from another computer and tried it on mine and it wouldn't boot that one either, then I put it back in its original computer and now that hard drive won't boot anymore. It says no OS found.

I tried to boot the Windows CD and it gets stuck at Starting Windows. I'm just wondering if this is a virus or some other problem with my computer that's corrupting all the hard-drives.

Thanks in advance.I would check the systems hardware starting with MOTHERBOARD and memory. Run some diagnostics on the machine and confirm that it is not the hardware. You cannot simply take a HDD from one machine and swap it in to another and EXPECT it to boot properly...
This has been true SINCE WinME.
Also it's a terrible way to diagnose what's wrong with a system...
Post alot more info on the machine and what happened prior to this and someone will be along shortly...All that patio described is correct but if you are going to rule out the hardware such as memory, processor, motherboard etc. with diagnostic testing it does not matter what drive you have in place even though it would be smart to have the one you started with in the machine since that is the harddrive that you use for that system, but bootable diagnostics don't KNOW the difference you are simply testing all hardware out with stress test and other test

Solve : No audio device??

Answer»

Hello!  I need help!!  Last week my audio was working just fine....and now it is completely gone! When I go to the control panel it says no audio device and I can't figure out what to do!!  I've tried downloading audio drivers from the dell website...but it says the hardware is missing.  I have a dell inspiron E1505 and I'm pretty sure it's Windows XP.  Anybody have any ideas?  Thanks!!try to turn off your desktop and take out the sound card. clean it with an eraser and take it back from where it was. turn on again your system and try to look for the device manager and look for the speaker icon.It is a laptop, yes?

From my searching that is what I found anyway...

Did you PERHAPS, disable the audio controller in the BIOS?It is a laptop....I don't think I have disabled anything....but I wouldn't KNOW how to check....even if I did!! lol!  I haven't tried CLEANING the sound card....I don't know where it is!  Sorry I'm not much of a help!!  Thank you!! 99.9% of LAPTOPS do not have a removable sound card, so do not worry about that.

Can you roll back the drivers?I could try!  Can you tell me how to do that? lol
open device manager by typing in devmgmt.msc into the run option on the start menu of XP or below, if using vista, type it into the search box on the menu and push enter.

find you sound card in the list of hardware, right click it and select properties.

Under the driver tab, SEE if there is an option to 'roll back' driver.I tried to roll back some of the sound drivers listed under the sounds, etc., tab....but it kept saying there was nothing to roll back to.  I did notice that when I checked the System speakers...it said there were none...could that be a problem?  thank you so much for your help!!

Solve : Graphic card: ATI 4870 or Nvidia 9600GT/9800GT??

Answer»

Recently my nvidia 8600GT has FRIED from playing a little too MUCH of Crysis.

I've decided to either buy the Nvidia 9600GT/9800GT or the ATI 4870. I'm getting mixed decisions from my friends.

I'm using it for gaming such as Dawn of war 2, Crysis or COD 5. so, which one should i get? budget is not a problem Ahhhh the old Nvidia vs Ati debate.

Ati 4870

or

Nvidia 9800 GT

??

Both cards are top-notch and wonderful choices.

If budget is not a concern, get WHICHEVER card costs the most.  From my EXPERIENCES with computer hard ware, when it goes on sale, there's a reason. The 4870 is far more pwoerful than the 9800GT, which is in turn better than the 9600GT.
If budget and power is not a problem, the GTX 295 is the best card available, but your CPU will hold it back. Quote from: Calum on March 04, 2009, 11:02:02 AM

I saw that from your specs, which is why I said your CPU will be a bottleneck.I have a 9600GT and I love it. Never had an issue with it and I can run pretty much every game I own at full detail without any issues. Quote from: quaxo on March 06, 2009, 06:47:58 AM

What games are those? Crysis? Dawn of war 2Crysis, Mass Effect, Assassin's Creed, WoW all run full detail for me.4870 is definitely wayy more powerful.  I dont know if it would be worth it though because of the cpu

Solve : Computer doesnt work right after upgrading memory. HELP?

Answer»

I have a 5 year old Dell desktop that came with 512mb DDR Sdram PC3200 400mhz (2 blocks of 256mb) memory. I just installed 2 blocks of 512mb DDR Sdram PC3200 400mhz for a new total of 1GB but now the only programs I can access on the puter are the Internet my VIRUS program and Windos Explorer. I cant open Outlook, Outlook Express, Word, Excel or any other program that I have.

When I try to open these progams by double clicking on their icons or by clicking on START  then All Programs then the name of the program,  I get "Failed To Initialize Properly"

I believe the new memory is just a generic brand, its certainly not Kingston or Corsair.

What the HECK happened   Should I just reinstall my old memory ??I would recommend doing some testing with the memory. Maybe the machine was only meant to handle 512mb on the motherboard especial a pc running sdram that is 5 years old, or maybe the speed of the new memory is not the correct speed for the motherboard and the MOBO (motherboard) can only handle PC3200. Try just one STICK of 512mb of the the new memory on the motherboard and see if that changes anything. If all else fails you could just stick with the old memory. But if you find that my troubleshooting is wrong and your motherboard is CAPABLE of HANDLING the amount of memory you want and the speed also I would try to reinstall Microsoft Office. I would first do some investigating to see if my motherboard is capable of that certain memory though, for I know I would rather have a gig then only 512mb Generic memory gives you what you paid for...
However you could try 2 things:
Remove all the Old RAM ...
Go to Start/Run and type in sfc /scannow and hit Enter...have your XP CD handy.Well, The max mem the computer manual says it will hold is 2GB. The proper type is PC3200 which is what came out of it and the 1GB I put into it is also labeled pc3200. The old and the new were also labeled 400mhz so I think I got the correct type.

However, I knew I was taking a chance when I bought generic but a couple of friends had good luck with there generic mem purchases.  The only thing I 've done is put the old mem back in and the puter is working fine now, I just wish that mem upgrade would have worked.  I will return the mem I bought and I guess I'll just buy some more through the Dell website.

You know, what might have been a problem is that the old mem was rated as DDR2 and the new mem just said DDR. Is  there a huge diff between DDR2 and DDR ??
Yes.yeah....

that would be the cause of the issue...

Solve : Audio sounds like it is skipping.?

Answer»

I have an mini acer notebook and for some reason the audio started to skip like a cd player would skip. It doesn't even have a cd drive for it. I've tried downloading the audio driver for it but its still skipping. Not really sure of what is wrong with it..
Its not just when music is playing. It skips the audio when windows loads up also. I've try to research more on it but couldn't really find anything for it.. So if I can get help on this I would really appreciate it!..thanks.....

It may be audio chip fault. Still under warranty?yes, it comes with a one year warranty.. I just got it on the 14th of this month.... I'd bring it back. It's not even 30 days, so you can simply get a new one on the spot.Acer is an HP Product
Maybe it's skipping like mine used to [due to application overload]   Until I took my Norton AV off........[Thank You Patio & Mr Broni}     Is working fine now  except once in a while when it's creating a restore point or doing an audit or indexing or whatever it's doing.......If you have RealTek they recomend getting driver updates from the Manufacturer's Website so it doesn't conflict with their way of doing things

Plug your info in here and see what you can findTake it back & get a new one if PROBLEM persists see above [woked for me]Thanks!! i will try this when I get home.... If all of your drivers correct [current] & it still skips try to turn off or dis-able AV Especially if it's Norton, but don't go online with it off....There is a good page by Patio for what to use for AV & comp securityMaybe, it's me, but I wouldn't even touch 2 weeks old computer, if it's not working properly. As far as touching a 2 week old computer, I agree However if you take all the time to take iot back & still have the same Issues Where are you then, when you may be able to find out the cause with a little checking of your Own ?If I'm Wrong about HP Try This

Once again.....you don't touch 2 weeks old computer, which is not working properly, because you have no idea what else will go wrong in 1 month, 3 months, and so on.Acer has been the subject of lawsuits, notably from its rival, Hewlett-Packard. According to the lawsuit, Acer was INFRINGING numerous technological patents, including power management in notebooks. Unleashed that Acer obtained patent designs which are REGISTERED by HP, WITHOUT any approval and agreement. HP has filed damage claim of 3.2 Billion U.S. dollars against Acer for the infringement of patents rights. [10]

Acer America Corporation has previously had an unsatisfactory record with the United States Better Business Bureau. It currently has a BBB Rating of C-. [11]

When I turned it back on, the monitor did nothing ( it still LOOKED like it was turned off ) but all of the normal things happened like it made the sounds of it loading vista. but the weird thing is that when I plug in an external monitor in to the side of it, it work fine on the external monitor but it still won't turn on the laptops monitor. So can u PLEASE help me out!!!!!I would use the external monitor and back up my important data and return it immediately for a replacement...

Solve : Do's & Dont's of Flash Drive?

Answer»
G'day All.

I'd like some help as a newbie.

I have an old Sony Vaio PCV-150 ,12 years old that has 2 USB ports at the back.
I was recently given a 2GB KINGSTON DataTraveler 100 Flash drive and 2 .0
Revision cable to transfer some files from the 4 Gig HD which is some 75% full.

The "G" drive is only recognized when plugged directly into the USB slot at the back
and not been attached to a USB 2.0 revision cable which allows the Flash to be
easily removed or installed from infront.

Because of the inconvenience  of pulling forward the computer to remove the Flash
drive I am wondering if there is any HARM leaving it in all the time .
I have tried Googling the topic but without success.
Thanks for any advice .

I suppose it is ok to leave it plugged in.

But i think you have to be really careful, because leaving it inside might be prone to snapping. (thats what she said!)

you have a twelve year old computer that is quite amazing, i had an EIGHT year old computer but it died. i would suggest getting a new computer but if you can't afford that then i guess it's ok to be doing what your doing. and YES be carefull because it may snap off inside her. (WHAT!)  I have an SD card that I leave in my laptop all the time as a backup drive. There is no harm in leaving the Flash Drive in 24/7.

Just, because it's at the back, make sure you don't accidentally break it as these two sensible people said. I have 2 USB extension cables for this purpose on my older machine...handy.

I modded the new case for 4 USB jacks on the front/side .

Many PC manuf. don't even wire up the front USB headers on alot of machines they ship. If the MBoard has the proper jack it's relatively easy to hook up the front header jacks. Quote from: scrolljoe on March 04, 2009, 05:31:11 AM

You have a PCI USB card installed in that computer, right?  Otherwise, no 12 year old computers had USB ports.

What, exactly, is a "Revision cable"?   I was wondering the very same thing...I would add a Powered USB HUB. This will allow for communications and the USB HUB with the AC Adapter will power the device.  Seen some issues with USB Extension cables and USB devices. A powered USB HUB that is not powered off of the USB port is the better way to go...  I have a D-Link DUB-H4 that I use.

Regarding age of system... if they say they have USB, they have USB... if they added a PCI USB card you could run USB on older hardware. Even as old as a later generation 486 with a PCI Slot and Windows 98 SE for example when the Pentiums were out with the PCI slots and some later gen 486 boards came with 1 to 3 PCI slots ( although not the common for the 486 platform) which was generally on early generation ISA 8 and 16 bit slots and sometimes a single VESA slot. It's entirely possible. USB 1.0 first came out in the mid-90s ('94 or '95 if I remember right). The Pentium II computer I built in late '97 had 2 USB 1.0 ports. My brother still has it back in the US. Still works.

-=EDIT=-
According to Sony's online manual for this model, it did in fact have 2 on-board USB 1.0 ports.

Got a Sony Vaio NR series laptop.(Bought it last year)Was given an old(HP) Apollo printer P-2200(Mfg in 2000).Would GETTING a USB to parallel cable adapter be worth it or would it even work THXCheck the HP website to see if they have DRIVERS for your operating system. If they do, you  should be good to go.johnnyflash,Make sure that you check the physical connections COMPATIBILITY also.truenorthBrand new MFC (Multi-Function Centre) Printers are very cheap these days, costing little more than $80 for a decent scanner/copier/printer.

Solve : Dot MAtrix Printers?

Answer»

I have never dealt with these wonderful but noisy printers except to install a driver once. I need to TROUBLESHOOT a second printer on a an HP Pavillion 7975 with dos and no windows. Not remembering a lot with dos, where should I start and where should I look for info/direction on printer functionality.

Thanks!! DOS does not require printer drivers, so your off the  hook there

it's usually sufficient to Copy a file to the PRN device or LPT1, or, for asynchronous printing, use the "print" command. As I go through the config.sys I see where NMDOSIN (?) is doing something with LPT2=SPP with -A -C switches
then
NETMOS dos installer

When netmos PCI device is found on bus02 slot0A it reads:
IRQ=255 : IRQ not programmed correctly
BIOS failed to program this device
Detected 1 pci device
com1 exists at 3F8
com2 exists at 2F8
LPT1 exists at 378

I assume that's why one printer is not working but does the bios need to program the device?
I am not sure how the PRN works or how to access it-yet.
What is NMDOSIN and what is happening with LPT 1 and 2?
Any direction would be great, I have been googling...finding not much. I have not found the right thread here but hope to create it or still look for it.
Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Solve : drive wiped now will not boot?

soooo...i have wiped it clean and now it will NOT boot nothing..arrrrgghh...i made and boot diskette and wouldnt you know that aint working either...so now i have a wiped hard drive and cant get anything on it...can anyone help me...?? Not without more info...1.  Need more information.  From Please read this first:

List as much about your computer as possible. This includes operating system (what version of Windows you are using), service packs, computer make/model, RAM, hard drive, sound and video CARDS, current adware/spyware/virus programs being used on a regular basis, do you have a "real" Windows CD, etc.

2.  How did you "wipe it clean" or what did you use?it is an emachine t1855 series the original was widows me os.. but someone else upgraded it to xp .. i have taken the harddrive and PUT it in my own computer and it worked fine..but when i put it back in the original tower it will not boot up..it says no os found.. i have tried me disk i have tried xp disk.. it was wiped with wipe drive..that is what i use on other pcs and have NEVER had any problems..until now.. it brings up the bios screen but will not let me boot from cd at all.. i have check all the drives and they are hooked in the correct ORDER. primary is hard drive{master} ....and secondary is cd RW{master} and then dvd drive{slave}?1.  I'm unclear on the current boot status of the emachine.  Will it successfully boot from any device?
    o  Hard Drive
    o  CD-ROM Drive
    o  Floppy Drive

2.  Do you believe all of the potential boot devices were functioning the last time you successfully used that computer?

3.  Do all of the potential boot devices show up in the BIOS?  The "Master" hard drive is on the primary IDE channel by itself (no slave device on that channel)?  If so, does manufacturer suggest you jumper drive as "Master" or is there also a "Single" jumper setting?when i turn on the computer it shows the emachine screen...then goes to the bios screen and at the bottom it says press any key to continue...and then the blank screen with the os not found comes up...
i have the primary set to the hard drive as master it shows on the bios screen and the jumper is set to master
on the secondary it is the cd rw set as master and the jumper is set to master
and the dvd is set to slave and the jumper is set to slave..
i have also change the setings up and tried each individual drive alone
the bios picks them all up in the order i have them hooked up..i have also removed them and then rechekd bios to show them not hooked up and then rehooked them up and they show up in the order i have stated...
at very first before all of this the cd drive wouldnt read anything so i replace it..with one that works...and it still wont boot up nothing...all i get is the press any key to continue and then goes to os not found....i tried a boot up disk on the a drive but is said it couldnt load the dos program and some error ..
i am thinking the board is bad...would that be possible? if it got a bad virus?
i have used the disk in other units and works fine...just this perticular pc..
i cant get into the cmos/bios either...it will only show the screen on boot..so i am just bout ready to walk away..??
...i just wanted to pick someones brain and see if anyone had any suggestions...and i thank any and all replys..i will continue answer any questions.. thanks guys
0.  Let's concentrate on simple things:  Getting into System BIOS (CMOS Setup) and trying to boot from floppy.

1.  If the system runs long enough and well enough to say "no os found", you should be able to enter CMOS setup (System BIOS).  Do you know which "function key" it uses to permit access?  Is there a separate function key which permits you to specify boot device to use?

You should be able to specify the "order" of the boot devices or the device you want to use for the current boot.  You should also be able to verify whether or not the floppy drive is "enabled", recognized, and configured properly within the BIOS.

2.  The bootup disk on drive "a:".  What is on this floppy?  Is it a Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition (SE), or Windows Millennium Edition (ME) Startup disk?  Is it a Windows XP boot disk?

Can you test the floppy boot disk on another machine to verify it works?

Solve : Can't boot from XP CD for clean install?

Answer»

Specs: XP Home SP3
Award BIOS
2.8 gb Intel Celeron CPU
1 gb RAM
40 gb Quantum Fireball HDD
Yamaha CRW3200E CD-RW Recorder
Compaq DVD-ROM

IDE Primary      Master HDD
                        Slave   DVD
IDE Secondary Master CD
                        Slave    None

Original setup was DVD as secondary slave, I moved things trying to find a solution.

Trying to do a clean install of XP Home, I set BIOS for CD boot first but it will not happen. I get the "hit any key to boot from CD" during load up but no matter what key I hit nothing happens. You can watch it time out waiting and then it MOVES to the HDD. This happens even if I disable the HDD from the boot sequence.

The XP CD is a legitimate MS upgrade disk. I tried booting from it on my laptop and it WORKED no problem. I also tried an old Win98 SE upgrade CD that is supposed to be a boot disk and it won't work either (I did not try this in the laptop).

This leads me to think it is something with the CD player but it seems to be working fine in all other respects-plays music, games, data and photo CDs, loads programs ok, burns CDs ok.

I have also tried putting the CD in the DVD drive to see if somehow that is the CD boot. No joy.

Any ideas?

kaigun,Try leaving the HDD on one unique ide cable (end connection).Put the Cd drive on another in dependant ide cable (set to master) and remove the dvd entirely (just for the test). Try that and see what happens. If there is no change replace the Cd-Rw with the DVD-rom (same physical setup and ensure it for the test is also set to master) and see if that GETS you working. Given your desire to do a clean install leave your bios boot order as you have it now for your tests. Report back with the results. Also ensure that your ide cable connection on your optical device is not reversed.truenorthThanks for the response.

Ok, I took the DVD off the primary IDE and disconnected its power too. Made sure the CD and HDD were both on the ends of their respective cables and that the cables were connected properly. Still no go. Same thing with the "press any key to boot from CD" message-I just watch it time out while I'm pressing keys.

Then I disconnected the CD and reconnected the DVD to the end of secondary IDE cable and reset the jumper to master. Same results.    Did you enter Setup at boot to change the boot order to the CDROM first ? ?Yes, and I know it took because it is LOOKING for a CD at boot.

Solve : Problem with External 1394 Enclosure (crippled drive)?

Answer»

Hello, I am hoping someone here may have had a similar experience or knows what to do:

I have an old (2000? ADS Tech. Oxford911 chipset) external firewire/1394 enclosure, my PROBLEMS began this morning when I went to install a larger, newer hard drive (Seagate 200GB ATA). I am using the setup MAINLY with a MacBook Pro for dv backup.

Right off, the drive was recognized as 128GB. Foolishly, I tried to reformat. The drive would then not mount at all. After reading online I discovered that it is most likely a limitation of the firmware on the bridge card. So, I pulled a bridge card out of a newer external case (one that I had stopped using because of problems with the power supply) and plugged it in through USB to my Linux desktop, since I don't have any firewire port.

I reformated the drive in gparted (it claimed it was 186GB) and then plugged it back in to the Mac's firewire port. It would not recognize the drive at all! Yet, I can use the USB port just fine. So, I swapped the drive again, and with another drive it now works.

What I want to KNOW is how to "rescue" the 200GB drive so that I can use it through firewire. I read online about HPA (host protected area) and don't know if possibly that is the problem?

Thanks in advance. Did you gpart it as FAT32?

You partitioned it with Linux and are trying to access the partition created under Linux with Mac. I am pretty sure that FAT32 is the only cross platform partition table structure supported between Linux, Windows, and Mac!No, that's not the problem. I can use the drive with the Mac through the USB port. It's only with the firewire that I have the problem. I have tried it with another drive so I know it is not the Mac or the firewire bridge, but this particular drive that has somehow had some parameters changed.

Solve : Computer Stops Responding?

Answer» Specs:
Toshiba A205-S5804 Satellite
WINDOWS Vista Home Premium 32bit SP-1
Intel Pentium DUAL CPU T2330 1.60GHz / 1.60GHz
2GB RAM

AVG 8.0.237
Spybot S&D (teatimer disabled)
CCleaner 2.12.660

Any more info you NEED lemme know.

Short Description of Problem: Clock resets and computer stops responding.

In Depth Description
A couple of days ago my computer decided to reset it's internal clock and everything stopped responding immediately. I tried resetting my system time (it reset itself to January 1st 1899 00:0:00) and as soon as everything loaded after it restart, the clock reset itself (to December 31ST, 1980 12:00AM). Then Windows updater went insane thinking it had alot of catching up to do, and all my programs that run off my time went haywire. Well, after i got them all settled down, and started using them (one at a time just in case), they started not responding. After toying around i figured i could use Skype and Google Chrome together, only.

Well, just yesterday i opened up my memory thing and took my memory out, and put it back in, thinking my memory had jiggled loose. That solved all of the problem, up until now.

Now it's resetting after being on for so long. It used to shut down after so long, but now the clock resets itself and programs stop responding.

I think part of my problem is the CMOS battery thing MAY have died or is loose. But could overheating also be the problem?

If there's anything else you need to know, let me know. I have run scans regularly, my computer runs normally til it's been on for a few hours.

This has only started happening this year (2009), my computer is about a year old. Sounds like you're correct about the CMOS battery...
You may want to double check your purchase date, it might still be under warranty.
They will at least give you a good deal on battery replacement and a cleanout of all fans and vents...
Good Luck.

Solve : Computer Ports??

Answer»

whats the MEANING of computer ports and how do they work???  A port serves as an INTERFACE between another computer or peripheral device.

In English, a port is the connector where you connect your mouse, keyboard, monitor, or any other device.

There are game ports, serial ports and parallel ports depending on the device.oooo, tyvm and one more question, what should i consider when BUYING computer ports? In most cases you have little say in the choice of ports as most of them are on the motherboard........you plug the mouse, keyboard, etc into a port on the BACK of your PC. And of course you ALSO have USB ports.ok, ty

Solve : My PC won't recognize any media that I put into my DVD & DVD-RW drives until...?

Answer»

My PC won't recognize any media that I put into my DVD & DVD-RW drives.

They are some hand-me-downs from friends and I'm wondering if I did SOMETHING weird when I installed them.

The only way I can get the computer to recognize the media is to go into the Properties for each drive and click "Populate" in the Volumes tab. Then I can DOUBLE click the drive icon and go about my business.

I've downloaded all the latest firmware updates (thatI know of) and un/re-installed the drives. The problem still exists.

I guess I can live with this if I HAD to but it makes doing anything I do with those drives very tedious.

The drives & computer in question are:
SONY DDU1615 (Master)
PIONEER DVR-112D (Slave)
DELL DIMENSION 8100
Did you have any CD drives installed before and were you having the same problems with those drives? or is it just for these new drives?  Any other information would be appreciated so that we know how to direct you.CD Drives don't need drivers.

Try this:

Go to Device Manager, click a "+" sign NEXT to IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers.
You'll see two items:
- ATA Channel0 (or Primary Channel)
- ATA Channel1 (or Secondary Channel)
Right click on each of them, and click Uninstal. Confirm.
Restart Windows. They'll be automatically reinstalled. Thanks guys.

The Device Manager trick didn't work...  problem still exists.

The error I get when I double-click the drove icon is this:
E:\ is not accessible
Incorrect Function

(Same with F:)

These are both replacement drives, and the problem started with their installation.

The original drives were the following:
NEC DV-5800A
Philips CDD 4801/81

If it was only one drive, I would think that the problem is within the drive itself, but both are having the same problem and they are two different manufacturer and I got them from 2 different people.

Upon jump starting my memory, I did indeed have Easy CD Creator 4 installed (as well as MMJ), but when we switched from WinME to XP, it wouldn't work.  I think I have Roxio Easy Media Creator 7 on there now as well at Nero 7.

In case you are wondering, when we switched to XP, I had to do something with the registry I think but the drives worked FINE after that.

Solve : PowerVault 725n?

Answer»

I recently purchased a Dell PowerVault 725n. It did not include any hard drives or caddys. I am looking at the interface that the hard drive uses and to be honest I have absoutly no idea wht kind of CABLE I need to connect it with. My research SAYS it uses IDE interface.

I also tracked down this link.

Any help is GREATLY appriciated. If it's a flat ribbon cable it is an IDE interface...
If it's a skinny usually red cable it is a SATA interface...

But the MBoard may have both options. Not SATA, not IDE. I'll see if I can get a photo.SCSI Perhaps ? ?Nope. Not SCSI.

This interface baffels me. I am thinking its an adapter to IDE cables.

(I'm a network admin for 3 small businesses, to eliminate all forms of "hes clueless")

I appriciate the help guys. Now to GO find the camera.Okay, Here is a pic of the BACKPLANE with the unidentified connectors:

Now that I look at it more it appears to be fibrechannel. Anyone want to confirm, I haven't worked with fibrechannel before.Hard to tell from that pick but those look to be SATA connectors...

I just got a "Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 ST3500418AS 500GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - OEM" and put in my desktop. When I went into bios to see if it was there I didn't see it. My MACHINE is not connected to the internet so I can't  have it look online and the seagate site dosn't have drivers for internal hard drives. Any IDEAS?

then wait a while... 500gb  quite a while
THANKS!!!!!! So I tried to install windows on my new Sata drive with the XP install disc but it still dosn't pop up in the partitioning window. It also still dosn't pop up in my bios. I made the mistake of wiping my other hardrive clean beacuse I thought I was going to install windows on the new drive. I flashed my bios and still can't see the sata drive. I guess I could install windows again on my IDE drive then format my sata drive within windows and see if it pops up in the windows partitioning page but that would take awhile and might not WORK. I also tried poping a VISTA disc in to see if that would find my drive but it said that it did not have the right drivers... I got acouple linux distros I could try but I'm not very GOOD with liunx. Can anyone think of a way for me to install windows on the sata drive?

I just installed a new power supply.  When I flip the switch on the PSU the computer starts, which is kinda weird, then it'll stay on for about 3 seconds and then shut down.  All the LEDs on the MOTHERBOARD will still be on, but all the fans stop.  The power button on the front of the case does nothing.

Any suggestions?

Solve : Constant Reboots--I suspect the PSU?

Answer»

Hi, I have a computer from late 2007 with these specifications:

Windows Vista Home Premium
I'm not sure the model of my motherboard, but it is made by ECS
GeForce 8600 graphics card
Intel Core 2 Duo E6500 processor
2 GB DDR2 OCZ RAM
320 GB hard drive
Eagle TECH Cool Power 500 Watt PSU

For the past few weeks, My computer would reboot a lot and the time between reboots would vary between about 3 seconds and many hours.  We looked up a bit why it was happening, and we found one guy's motherboard was dying, which I hope isn't happening to me, and another guy found his RAM and graphics card connections weren't in correctly.  So we OPENED to computer and vacuumed a lot of dust out, but all the connections were good, although the problem still persisted.  When the computer was rebooting like every 5 seconds, I would wiggle the PSU cable and the problem would be fixed for between a few hours and a day.

However, this afternoon, the computer wouldn't stay on for more than a few seconds before rebooting no MATTER what I did to the cable.  After a while I realized something very bad had happened, because the little lights on my wireless keyboard signal thing weren't on (and they are still on when the computer is off).  Also, I couldn't hear my PSU on (you can usually hear it pretty well when the computer is off).  When I unplugged it and replugged it back in, the lights on my keyboard thing would go on for a second, but back off again.  This all leads me to believe that it is the PSU.  I got it for -1¢ (after only $20 in rebate) and the reviews weren't great.  The only other thing could be the graphics card fan not running which I can't see even with my see-through case, but I think the computer would still at least turn on if it wasn't working.  If you think it might not be the PSU, please tell me and thank you Borrow a known good PSU of the same or greater wattage and swap it in there to see if the ISSUE goes away...if so replace it.
I'd stay away from the 20 Dollar specials though...Wow I  think it was actually the power chord.  I went to the computer we never used to get its PSU, but before I did all this work I put in that computer's power chord just to see if it worked, and it did!  I'm so happy I didn't waste like an hour changing PSU's.  Thanks.Nevermind, it still reboots, I guess the chord is only helping for a couple more days or weeks.  But if the PSU is definately the problem, I'll surely need a new one, because the other one is 8 years old, is 350 Watts (I believe the bare minimum for my graphics card) and I'm not even sure if it connects to SATA hard drives, because that computer has an IDE hard drive.

Solve : Gateway 5200S bios troubles?

Answer»

Recently my son was PLAYING around with an older Gateway computer that I don't USE much ANYMORE..He attempted to OVERCLOCK the ram from 400mhz to 533mhz. Ever since his experiment, the computer, naturally will not boot up. I am not able to flash the bios because nothing will boot, not even the video. Does anyone have a suggestion on how to do this? I tried Gateway support, but I was told to throw it away, and buy a new computer. Please help.

Solve : computer to my stereo.?

Answer»

I am getting a loud hum. What gives? Is it the sound card? I am using a mini stereo plug from the sound card to the rca in's on my sony receiver. The music is faint with a loud hum. I would appreciate any help. Thank You
johns2useSeems that your getting some feedback in the receiver...DEPENDING upon how OLD the receiver is, the FILTERING circuitry that filters out ECHOS, feedback, and such may not be that useful as it once was..

How old is it?I would plug headphones into the same plug that your using for the audio out on the sound card, if you GET the hum in your headphones then it would be your sound card. if not it might be you surround receiver.
