Solve : Copying data from one hard drive to another?

Answer»

Hi I am trying to copy some data / pictures from hard drive in a computer that crashed (because of a virus I think) so I installed the hard drive (IDE)as a slave in another computer and it looks like its being recognized showing me local disk E and in it appears in the device manager and states its working properly. But I try and scan it it compleats a scan and then it says no files scanned and also I try and open it through Explore and it just keeps saying its not formated and do I want to format which I SAY no, from what I hear format erases everything?? I am not sure if that is correct? Also I look at properties and it says "0" Bytes for capacity and space used, file SYSTEM says " RAW" as the regular disk says NTFS for file system ..So what do you think the problem is .. Thanks for the help ! In disk management through Adminstrative Tools it shows capacity 30 GIG and free space 30gig status healthy Both disks are Win XP Is this an external drive ? ?

RAW normally means the data is gone because the drive was disconnected prematurely.Hi Patio thanks for the reply no its internal and I actually got it to work. I noticed that my master was set to CS I didn't know exactly what CS was at the TIME so didn't check at first but I changed my slave to CS and it recognized the drive and I scanned it and removed the virus so that part is done but now.... I have another question how do I go about unlocking the password ( I know what it is ) to get to the administrators files / folders I know I can put the drive right BACK into the computer where it came from but I think there are still issues with that one I don't think it will boot up which brings me to my other question... This is a Compaq computer which didn't have recovery disks included you had to make them. Well when I loaded the drive there is a seperate sub drive w/ a recovery folder can I just copy that to a cd and use that as my recovery disk ? When I boot that computer now all I get is the fan revving so there is something else wrong and not sure if the recovery disk will help I replaced the PSU and battery that didn't do anything. Again when I boot all I get a black screen, and the lights on the keyboard flash for a sec and that's it and the fan just revves. Orginially it did give me the windows screen but then I shut it down because I didn't have time to mess with in then, so I took off the case later and sprayed it with air and when I rebooted just the fan was revving and a black screen. When I first got it to try an fix it it just I was told it just kept saying entering sleep mode and shuts down ( this is all from some virus ). So thats the background Thanks for the help !

Solve : my Acer Power F2 shuts down?

Answer»

help me please..my Acer Power F2 desktop pc is shutting down after several minutes. I checked the OS (no virus), power cord, the avr and power supply everything is ok, except that it shuts down at the middle of my work. here's the specs:
Processor - Intel Pentium 4
RAM - 256 mb ddr 400
HDD - 20g
OS - Windows XP Prof Service pack 2
Video - built-in Intel Graphics AccelaratorCould be an overheating issue - Remove the side of the case and if you have a desktop fan use this to blow into the open side. This is just a test to see if its an overheating problem.

What temps is your cpu reaching.

Another thing it could be is your ram. Reseat the ram by taken it out and making sure its reseated properly. You need more RAM, as well.I've already open the side cover and put an electric fan facing the cpu YET it shuts down. I even disabled in the cmos setup the shutting down temp. as i've observe when temp reaches from 38-40 degees C it shuts down. but dont TRIED to reseat my ram.thank you for giving that option.Does this still happen in Safe Mode?

Quote

I checked the OS (no virus)
How did you check it? (what antivirus software do you have?

Any recent downloads/installations before this HAPPENED?Check the PSU fan, It could be broken!, When the PSU is overheating the PC turn off to PREVENT a hazzard risk! Try it! Check also in the BIOS the temperature and check if you have active the overclocking option!

Solve : Itanium CPU HELP?

Answer»

I just found out that all CPUs ahve an External BUS Width of 64 Bits just so they can interface with all of the 64 Bit Motherboards out there.

But all CPU have Internal Regisisters that are only 32 Bits Wide so the can only PROCESS 32 Bit at a time.

Then I just found out about a real 64 Bit processor that can process 64 Bits at a time because it's Internal Regisiters are 64 Bits Wide. This CPU is called the INTANIUM.

My Q/A is is this CPU on the markit an anyone buy it?
And if most Windows XP pro is 32 why get a 64 cpuQuote

My Q/A is is this CPU on the markit an anyone buy it?

i did a little research, and apparently it is only sold to OEM manufacturers and not the GENERAL public. also, you will need a COMPATIBLE motherboard and the price of an itanium motherboard can cost ~$1000.

Quote
And if most Windows XP pro is 32 why get a 64 cpu

are you talking with respect to the itanium? the itanium is strictly 64 bit. it will not work with a 32 bit OS. it will also not work with our standard ATX motherboard. have you seen the itanium?

One step further too quantum computing, the day when a computer can "Think"If all Data moving ACROSS the Motherboards out there are 64 Bits Wide I understand why they make CPUs External registers 64 Bits wide so it can take in data from the Motherboards.

But the way the Internal registers process is only 32 Bits at a time I get this.

So Is this why Win xp is only 32 bits why.AnyoneQuote from: nymph4 on June 07, 2008, 12:44:52 PM

Solve : 8 gb ram?

Answer»

Is ANYONE running 8gbs ram in Vista. Just wondering how its working and what type of Vista your using. Also what problems did you run into. what kind of processor mobo etc. Any help would be apreciated. Im running a abit I x 38 gt BOARD intel 6700 processor and wondering if it would help my system with vista and GAMING not worried about price. Any help would be apreciated. How you got the OS to use the ram etc.You have to have 64-bit system to use 8GB of RAM.
32-bit can handle 4GB only (practically, it uses only AROUND 3GB).I think anything over 4 gigs is a waste of money in your case. It will never get used. Correct me if I am wrong.Anything past 4Gb won't be noticeable in, say, games, or in terms of actual performance, IMHO (unless you run something like Crysis, edit videos, and also do something else at the same time).
however, more RAM does increase the overall smoothness of your experience.
If you have Vista X64 edition and you have the money to burn, there's no SPECIFIC reason not to max out the RAM, but equally there's not really compelling reason to do so. I have 4Gb on XP X64 and will soon be going to 6Gb, purely because I got a good deal on it. I don't expect to see much of a performance boost, but it will hopefully run a little smoother.

Solve : How to install a new internal hard disk??

Answer»

Hi i just added a second internal hard disk to my computer but i cant get the computer to 'recognise' it i.e. i cant find it on My Computer. I can see its specs during the bootup, tho. I have a Windows Vista if that helps. Thanks. Is it an IDE or SATA Hard Drive?

Are the jumpers on the hard drive set to Slave Drive, Not Primary or Master?1) Its a SATA hard disk, and
2) right, i forgotten about the jumpers... let me check. thxi was told that sata drives dont NEED to be set as master and slave :-s I checked and xenon is rite. My hard disk does not have a jumper for master/slave option.

eh, any other suggestions?Does it show up in device manager or disk manager?
Start - RUN - devmgmt.msc or diskmgmt.msc respectively.Yeah it shows up in Device Manager. You have to FORMAT the driveNice Catch Xavier...Sata drives have gone away from slave/master which matters is where its pluged into determines if its seen first or second. You PROBABLY dont have any partitons running the os disk or seperate formatter will fix it, then do a repair if your using windows os.Alrite. i GOT to initialize and format the hard disk thru Computer Manager, gave it a volume letter. its working fine now.

i appreciate the help guys. thxWell done jkang, glad you got it sorted.Good job.

Solve : Outdoor wireless G security camera options??

Answer»

I have limited sight to the area my car and truck are parked in and want to buy an outdoor wireless G camera to mount on the roof. Which is the best, most affordable option for me. All my wireless hardware is Lynksys 'G' so far, but I will buy anything that is compatible with my router if it's dependable and the price is right.
Any suggestions? How long of a distance are we talking about and what wireless router do you have ? ?

Oooooops ...just spotted it in your Sig... Only about 30 feet. The camera will be mounted on the bracket that holds my satalite dish which is on the roof over the bedroom next to mine. I know that when I was using the wireless G with the router at one end of the house and the computer / adapter at the other end (about 60 feet} I had very POOR connection speed (like about 20k). In this camera situation, it will be much closer. This camera looks like it would work fine but I DOUBT I can afford $556.95.

http://www.apexcctv.com/p-104-vivotek-ip6117-ip-camera-weatherproof-wireless.aspxWhat about mounting a non-outdoor camera, something like this Linksys model ;

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductReview.aspx?Item=N82E16826216001

which are much cheaper from what I can find via Google, and mount it in a weatherproof housing like this:

http://www.apexcctv.com/p-165-camera-housing-enclosure-heater-blower-weatherproof.aspxIf you need it to be weather resistant you can probablly build your own enclosure....
NOTE i didn't say weather-proof.
I'd get the cheapest Cam i could fing for this and go from there...if it lasts 6 months you're still ahead of the game money wise.I don't know about that patio. I'm a good industrial machine mechanic / electrician, but I think I would have more than $29.95 in materials alone if I built a camera housing unit with heater / blower like the one I linked, not to mention my time, which is limited these days working 6 and 7 days a week. And I have plenty of 24vdc power supplies available so that won't be any additional cost ("Power Supply: Sold Separately'), in my case. I just need a camera that will fit correctly and last a little longer than 6 months.
Another Option...I don't see anything that is a direct connection to computer, wired or wirless G. How much hardware will I need to accomplish this. I have to say I'm not real impressed with what i found on the link but then I'm new to this security camera thing so I'm not qualified to make a decision in this feild.
I sure would like to keep it as simple to get up and watching as possible, so additional hardware will be an issue with my knowledge and time. I'll do a little more reaearch and ask more questions before I purchase but, although I have the link for an option if I can find out how to get it running, I may take a DIFFERENT approach.
Thanks patio!!!Is there a way to make a USB camera wireless like my USB 'non-wireless' PRINTER, which is made wireless via Linksys wireless print server WPSM54G?
I have a camera, but it's USB and I don't know if a USB cable long ENOUGH to connect it (probably 75 feet) wired would work right. How long of a cable can a USB operate on efficiently?2 to 3 Metres...Radio Shack suggested using a USB to Ethernet adapter. Would this work?

Solve : Hot, Dark Blue, (sister's computer in africa)?

Answer»

My sister is in Africa and she just called in tears because her computer doesn't work and she's at her homestay so she's by herself and needs to do papers.

The symptoms she gave were:
It gets REALLY hot then it turns off
She has turned it on, it gets hot and then gets what she called a "dark blue screen". It then dims as if having been unplugged, then gets a "bright blue screen"
She says it's not the blue screen of death.
The last time she turned it on she was trying to get a paper off of her USB stick and it GOT really hot, turned off, and now she can't turn it on.

It's a DELL laptop, she's had it for 2 years, and I think she's on XP.

She says it's been giving her trouble for a while. She doesn't connect to the internet though and doesn't print from her comp.
PLEASE HELP:( She's alone and I hate know she's so miserable. If CPU fan has failed this could be at the root of the trouble. Not a good situation.

I WONDER tho too - if she uses the laptop with good underside clearance, and whether the air intake slots are clear of lint etc. All she can do I think is look under and CHECK for obstruction - keep the thing clear of any restriction to air flow.

Fans are usually pretty quiet but maybe she could listen carefully and see if she can hear any fan at all - just to try and tell if there is cooling.

How long from switch-on before the over heating I wonder? Could she go in thru safe mode and stay functional? If so then she could perhaps check for any processes that might be hogging CPU to LEAD to over heating in full Win mode (assuming as you suggest this is XP she uses). Sounds like this amount of over heating is bad - over temp on CPUs is not good news.

and now she can't turn it on
Just read that bit - that does not sound good I have to say.

Solve : Can you help me find a keyboard please??

Answer»

I would LIKE to find a USB desktop keyboard which has keys that feel exactly like laptop keys.

I would also like a full height carriage-return key.

Can anyone help me please? Not SURE if what you seek is even available but - suggest a cruise thru newegg.com and techforless.com - and if the keyboards shown have pics then it MAY give you some idea.Sorry to be blunt but looking for a special "touch" on shopping for a keyboard cannot be accomplished online...you would NEED to try out the keyboards in person...Oh yes, of course.

But just a general indication of 'laptop-style' keyboards would definitely point me in the right direction in the first place.

Thank you.http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/keyboards/keyboard/devices/4742&cl=us,en

This keyboard's made for a NOTEBOOK but it should work on a desktop PC.

After all, notebooks are just portable computers essentially.

How about swapping my motherboard to a unit with PLENTY of expansion for PCI cards?
I guess I'd need a case with more expansion room to swap all the hardware to.

You can always try a riser if your case has the room inside...the case only has room for 1 more slot. From what I've seen, cases are not very expensive.

Solve : Can't boot to windows or monitor doesn't work?

Answer»

What CD are you trying to boot to ? ?

Why is it difficult to try what's been suggested ? ? You keep avoiding this.

We're trying to determine if it IS the motherboard but in order to do so you have to start following instructions...I've replaced the PSU twice. Checked all the cables several times. Can't boot in the safe MODE, nothing on screen. Will try another HDD but will need to boot from XP CD since the HDD is a formatted HDD so I will try to reload XP. Not sure what you think I'm missing what you are asking me to do? You wanted me to create a bootable CD from the HDD manufacturers website but how will that help If I can't boot from a CD?

The only other thing I can try is to replace the HDD, RAM and PSU from my other EMachines PC that WORKS fine but I really don't want to mess that one up. I've ALREADY MOVED the PSU and RAM from there to the failing PC before with no luck.OK, I swapped out my HDD, PSU, all cables (bus or otherwise), and RAM from my PC which is working fine. Still no good. Put everything back in my PC and it works fine again. The only thin left is the MB and Processor. Do I have to get a EMachines MB or any other make that will accept the Athlon processor? Do you think it may be the processor or MB?

Guys 'n' Gals,

A month or so ago I tried to plug my DISCOUNT Usb pen into my PC (XP SP2) to download some photos. The USB pen said it was being CHARGED but the PC seems to have no inkling that it's connected. I can't force it to pick it up when it can't see anything there at all. I've not been able to connect it to the PC since.
Can anyone SUGGEST what MIGHT (not) be happeningDo other pen drives work with that machine?
Does that pen drive work with other computers?"Discount" may be the keyword here...
See if it works in another machine as suggested.
Also some drives have a tiny micro switch on them for security.

Solve : AOpen 19" LCD monitor may be dead?

Answer»

I have had some trouble with my LCD monitor recently. It's power light is blinking GREEN but there is no display on the screen whatsoever. Everything is hooked up right, and it is not a problem with my computer as I am on it right now with a different monitor. It also makes a static like noise, not coming from the speakers. Most forums I have read indicate there is a loose or burnt out component, such as a capacitor or the power TRANSFORMER. I do not have the expertise to repair this so basically I was wondering if anyone has experience with the company AOpen and whether or not they would repair it or replace it via warranty. It is only 1.5 years old so it should be covered, but I lack the receipt or any documentation that goes with it. However I have sent other computer PARTS away for repair without PRESENTING proof of purchase.

If anyone has anymore solutions that don't involve opening the case, I'm all ears. Thanks.Try different cable. Try monitor on another computer.
If still no GO, then send it back. It should be covered under 3 years warranty.Yes, that is the plan. Only the link for 'Warranty' appears to be dead on their site: http://www.aopencenter.com/. It seems I will have to wait until Monday to call customer service and get my RMA number.

I have tried RESETTING the cmos but that doesn't seem to work, have borrowed a tower from a friend and its so slow!!
Need help please!
Try replugging all your drive cables and reseating all your cards. If you've got some compressed air then give the inside a clean while your in there. Take the battery out of the BIOS while you do this. How exactly did you do this ? ?
Vista normally will block an XP install so describe in detail what method you used.My Vista wouldn't activate and then wouldn't allow me to log in so maybe this is why it let me install XP?
I just put my installation DISK in and installed from this, it was going fine untill the missing files problem.
I will try the taking out all the cards etc and see if that works

Thanks for the helpQuote from: patio on November 15, 2008, 07:57:43 AM

Greetings all. Can someone give me some advice. I bought a HP Scanjet 4p at a garage sale and WOULD like to connect it to my laptop but the scanner may be non-compatible with my laptop. I have downloaded some compatable drivers from HP's site but I'm wondering about the minimum system requirements listed in the installation BOOKLET. It says I must have a VGA monitor and wants to connect to a SCSI card.
It would nice if all I had to do was get an adapter for the SCSI cable and COULD connect it to a USB port.

Here are my specs.

Gateway 400sd4 NOTEBOOK CIRCA 2003
XP-home, sp3
pentium r4cpu
2.60Ghz-512 ram

HP Scanjet 4p scanner
25 pin scsi to 50 pin scsi
cable interfaceI see no reason why SCSI to USB adapter shouldn't work.Yea, I'll try that. If it doesn't work I can take adapter back.
Thanks for the reply. I just needed to think it out and get an opinion and
I got one thanks.Sure thing

Solve : sound card problem maybe?

Answer»

Hi I've been having a problem with my sound I have win xp sp3 and also have a soundblaster audiogy sound card I've updated the drivers and it didn't help i've also did a repair install on windows and then reinstalled the drivers thinking maybe a virus that had messed things up but that didn't help I even tried to reinstall the games and nothing worked right now I'm thinking it maybe my card but I'm not sure. I'm playing battlefield 42 and battlefield 2 and now it seems to do it when I play a regular cd too. I've also pulled the card out and put it back in and still nothing cured it. I've even put it in another slot but that didn't work.Easiest way to determine if it's the card would be to swap it into another MACHINE and install the drivers...or if another spare card is lying around, install that one and SEE if it works properly.I have another pc here but it has freespire on it could I just install the card in that computer freespire? is that another Sound card? It's a version of linux it's like linspire. I put the sound card in my other pc and it worked great so right now I'm thinking it has something to do with the motherboard or processorIf it worked fine in the other machine then the XP machine probably has the wrong drivers installed.
REMOVE the device completely in device manager and use Add/Remove programs to remove all Sound Blaster software and start over...
Use the original drivers if you have them.
okay I've tried what you told me to do and I still have the problem I've also updated the drivers again and then I set it on 24bit instead of 16 bit and it does sound a little better Wait a second- what were the original issues anyway?okay when i'm playing battlefield42 and I get a map loading the sound will start out slow and distorted and it will still do it until the map is loaded then when I start the game it seems to work just fine. This has been GOING on since I got the vundo virus a couple of months ago and I thought that I had it cleaned actually probably longer than that it just suddenly started back then so anyways this past week I did a repair install on windows and reinstalled my programs and sound card drivers but it still did it. So yesterday I did what you GUYS told me and the card worked great in my linux machine so I know that the card is fine now and today I uninstalled the old driver and installed the new one and changed the bit depth in device control and now in battlefield 42 I do not notice it hardly at all. There's some sound lag a tiny bit but nothing like it was

Solve : Computer started.. Then just shut off?

Answer»

Hey there i have a custom built computer that pretty much worked fine until a few hours ago.. i was having a problem with my audio jack not reading my audio cable input sometimes. I opened up my computer case and attempted to repair this small problem, I made sure the plugs where my audio jacks were securely connected to my motherboard. I restarted my computer which booted fine, and then viola, right as i am about to log into my vista username it shuts off unexpectedly! I try to power it on again via the front power switch and nothing.. I turn the switch off to the psu in the back of my computer and opened it up and LOOKED inside again. I turned the psu on and there is a blue LED on the motherboard that is ON. So i don't think that theres anything wrong with my psu. I looked around for LOOSE screws that might cause a shortage. but without taking anything out of my computer i couldn't find (or hear) anything. I really have no idea on where to go from here..

Thank you in advance for anyone that MAY be able to help..

okay i called up evga for their tech support (which is really good) ive unhooked everything off of my motherboard except for my processor and my powersupply and it still doesnt start up. So i am pretty sure that the problem is my motherboard (unless the cable from the motherboard to the powersupply itself is broken) which is unlikely.. I am regestering my product and RMAing it today.Possibilities are your power SUPPLY is broken or the motherboard is dead. I suggest that you bring your computer to the shop and have it check. It is better to let the professional do the fixing to prevent further damage to your equipment.

Solve : Will This Mobo, RAM, & CPU work together??

Answer»

Our family computer went out completely recently, and we need a new motherboard and CPU. I picked out some parts, but I wanted to MAKE absolutely sure they will work together and be the BEST deal before I buy them. It needs to be around $200.

Motherboard: http://www.ewiz.com/desc.php?name=MB-IP-95
CPU: http://www.ewiz.com/desc.php?name=E7300BOX
CPU Fan: http://www.ewiz.com/desc.php?name=FAN-AC7PRO

I like the motherboard because it supports the RAM that was in our computer that broke (2GB PC3200) and seems to be very upgradable since it supports a lot of things. Would I be BETTER off just getting new RAM?yes they should work together just fine. Just make sure you put thermal paste between the cpu and heatsinkWell those parts should work together without a hitch. If this is a big upgrade from your other computer you may also want to check to make sure your power supply is up to snuff. I'd be suprised if it wasn't but it never hurts to check. Wouldn't want to buy these parts and have a psu GO bad on them.

Edit: Right before i hit post brett beat me to itTo add to the other COMMENTS, that CPU cooler is great, I have the same one. However, do you need an aftermarket cooler? That CPU comes with a cooler.
The motherboard will most likely need a BIOS flash to work with that CPU - read the motherboard manual carefully before attempting it, or you may end up with an expensive paperweight. Therefore, you'll also need a CPU which was supported from the get-go on that board to attempt the flash.

Hope this helps.

Solve : computer switches off, smell burning when playing a game.?

Answer»

Hi
I have just bought the game call of duty world at war. When I go to play the game at HIGH setting with my geforce 260gtx I get a good fps of around 80fps. The problem is that after a short time of playing only this game (othergames are fine). My computer switches off and smells of burning. I think my cpu is getting to hot but im not sure how to monitor it ingame. On idle, just on the desktop, it READS 35 C and 32 C. But when it shuts down after playing the game, I quickly start it back up and it reads over 65 C or maybe more. Do you think this is what is causing the shutdown and buring smell? here is a list of specs:

1) Motherboard asus crosshair
2) ram 2gb
3) cpu amd x2 dual CORE 6400+ 3.20ghz
4) windows vista 32bit
5) psu coolermaster 650 wattSorry to bump my thread but does anyone have an answer? Also, could SOMEONE tell me, where I can get a free program that will monitor my temps while i play the game. One that I can see whilst I am playing. A bit like the program fraps, that shows your fps while you play. Thanks!Open the side of the case and check to see if all the fans running / is there a lot of DUST in the case that could be insulating the system & making it over-heat / is the hardware suitable for this game?

Alan <>< All the fans are running. Another problem I have is trying to alt tab in vista. When I play a game it will not alt tab to the desktop, all it does is bring me back into the game, so its hard to monitor anything? Why won't vista let me alt tab to desktop all of the time?I have just found that the psu fan is not working. Hence the reason I cannot play this game! Now what I need to know is, will I be able to use this psu just to browse the internet tonight? It does seem to be running ok without its fan, whilst I am browsing. Thanks! You run the risk of not only burning up your PSU completely but having it take out other expensive components with it not to mention setting your room on fire...
HINT: When you replace it don't buy a $20 dollar special.Ok cheers patio, I think I'll just switch off then

Solve : signs of a dead motherboard?

Answer»

i have a motherboard that i am PRETTY sure should still work but my PSU is down right are there any other WAYS to check and SEE if a mother is functionable or not. You'll need a PSU to test it with, to see if it powers on or not.Why do you suspect a problem with the board ? ?QUOTE from: rollup on November 07, 2008, 11:29:50 AM

other ways to check and see if a mother is functionable or not.

quite simple, GENTLY nudge the mother. If she says "ow" or "hey" or anything of the sort, she's fine. Otherwise call an ambulance.

Edited because Dias has a sick mind.

Quote from: BC_Programmer on November 07, 2008, 08:51:12 PM
gently poke the mother

[edit] Maybe you should rephrase that?

If your 100% sure that your motherboard still works then it's OK to have it fix. But if it's broken, I think its time to buy a new one.

Solve : Help Required =)?

Answer»

I do not have a clue about computers in general but I am going to buy a laptop/desktop computer in the coming month.

The set up in my house is that we have ONE computer downstairs which is where the netgear router and wireless access points are. We also have connections running to another, more powerful computer upstairs (through a hole in the WALL) and my PS3 through the wireless access point.

My questions are:
1) Will the wireless access point (Linksys Wireless-G Access Point Model WAP54G) be able to connect with my PS3 AND my computer?
2) Will the wireless access point be able to connect to a desktop computer or is it only laptops?
3) Would I be able to use two wireless access points off the same netgear router?

Thanks a lot in advance and I hope you can HELP. =)1: No real limit to how many devices can connect to an AP
2: A wireless G AP can connect to any device with a Wireless G Nic
3. You should have no PROBLEM connecting to APs to your router, provided you have enough ports.Sorry to be a n00b but what is a wireless G nic and can desktop computers have them?

Thanks for your help btw. Wireless G is a fairly new standard that manuf. have adopted for wireless devices...

NIC stands for a Network Interface Card which you have...Most desktops don't COME with wireless nics, but they can be added either via PCI or USB.

Solve : which is better for ram configurations? dual channel or more memory??

Answer»

What's better? Dual channel configuration or more memory?

I have 1gb of DDR memory in my SYSTEM at single channel configuration. I have now a 2 new 1gb memory sticks that I have which is in a dual channel kit.

The 1gb is via 1x512, 2x256 sticks. What configuration makes most use of the memory sticks now, given I have 4 memory stick slots and I'm not using 1 of the 256 sticks, which is PC2700 while all other memory is PC3200.More RAM is better than less in dual channel MODE, there's very little real world performance to be had from dual channel.
For your configuration, use 2x1Gb sticks, 1 512MB and 1 256MB, for a total of 2.75GB.
Use the PC3200 RAM too, although it's still unlikely to make much of a noticeable difference between PC2700 and 3200.

Hope this helps.Ok so the conclusion is .... no dual channel SETUP, UNLESS I get a 512 memory stick to make a 3 gb dual channel.l

I was told PC3200 makes difference over PC2700 is more memory intensive computer usage such as playing some computer games or doing some other heavier duty work.

Lastly, The 2gb Corsair, the 512mb Edge Tech and the 256mb infineon memories should live happily together in my system? They're all DIFFERENT brands, though big name brands and I heard it's not too good to mix and match too many different memories' brands.
It should be OK to mix different manufacturers.
The small difference in speed between PC2700 and 3200 really won't be noticeable. In some benchmarks there will be a small difference, but in the real world it won't matter.

If I take two HARD Drives and PUT them into a RAID 0. and then Load Win XP onto it will it not Read and WRITE to them faster???

And if so if I take two 512 GB Hard Drives and put them into a RAID 0. will they Read and Rite slower then if I take two 80 GB Hard Drives and put them into a RAID 0.
thanksI am sorry what I ment was.

I know if I take two Hard Drive of the same size and Strip them togather I can put my Win XP on it and it will work as one big Hard Drive. And it can Read and Write to it faster I get this.

But what I don't know is if you take two 80 GB Hard Drives and Strip them will they Read and Write faster then if I take two 512 GB Hard Drives and Strip them???AnyoneI am no RAID expert - and suggest in fact you RESEARCH the subject on the web ..... try a read on this site where there is some useful info.

My concern with RAID 0 would be if one HDD goes down ... and so RAID 1 would seem a safer bet.

Re two drive sizes you mention, I doubt there would be much discernible difference in read write times.

I've searched the forums for similar problems, and didn't find anything. Apologies if the ANSWER does exist!

Anytime I play a GAME the system locks up, and it happens anywhere from several hours to a few minutes after starting the game, including 3-D games that are 6 years old. I have a few games I've never been able to play on this system because they'll hard crash the system before I even make it past their splash screens.

2 GB RAM
2x 233 GB hard drives in RAID 0
1x 233 GB backup
DVD/CD RW
nVidia Geforce 9500GT 1GB (350 Watt, powered from motherboard and not directly from PS)
Extra video card fan
500 watt power supply
Windows Vista SP1

What I've tried so far:

All drivers and bios current
Complete format/reinstall
replaced 400 watt, direct to PS geforce 8800 with the 350 watt 9500 (originally thought it was a power/heat issue. System's definitely cooler with the new card, though)
Added the video card case fan
Chaning CPU affinity to 1 CPU core
Changing system priority
Changing program compatibility from Vista to XP

Case thermometer consistently reads 27 C
CPU running at 54 C (~20 less than MAXIMUM)
8800 ran well below max temp, as does the current 9500

I'm at my wits end... I bought the system to play games, but right now it's just a big paper WEIGHT. Much obliged for any help you can provide!

Solve : Recover RAID 0 Laptop Harddrive?

Answer»

My old laptop's motherboard died, probably as a result of OVERHEATING. The harddrive is RAID 0; two drives stacked on top of each other. I've had some friends look at it, and they recommended a 2.5" PATA/IDE ENCLOSURE kit. I found this one at tigerdirect - Sabrent 2.5" USB 2.0 to IDE/PATA ALUMINUM Hard Drive Enclosure. Will I still be able to recover the data one drive at a time, even though it is RAID 0? I also looked into IDE cable adaptors, but again, the IDE cable adaptors I've found only CONNECT to one harddrive at a time. THANK your for any help you can give me.

Solve : My ram decrease?

Answer»

Hi,I have problem on my pc,my ram amount decreases,I have 639mb and DECREASE into 383mb,I really sad..how can I get back my ram..More info really would help!!

Explain what you mean and where you see these figures. Also - op system details, computer info and chronology of problem.

The figures also seem odd - RAM usually is based on increments of 256 Mb.!Ok2,today my computer have problem to booting then I get message like windows xp cant start because the file in windows/system32 has corrupt or missing, also Load needed DLL for kernal,I tried to restart, sometime It can boot but mostly can't booting..when It can booting, the start up is slow than before..then i saw my ram have 383mb..my computer have 2 ram combine, the one is 256mb and the one is 512MB,the total 768mb,but I check using properties>My computer it show 639mb,but now 383mb,the ram loose 256mb,any idea?No idea so FAR - properties should show total RAM in place and available .... maybe one of the other guys can get a feel for this.

I am guessing perhaps there is an actual RAM problem but others more knowledgable than me could well chime in here.

Might be worth knowing - how LONG machine been in use - any recent changes .. and has RAM been same all time? etc.I bought my computer at 2005,I dont know about ram at that time..my computer have 3 times damage..the ram decreases when the 3 times..from 256mb to 128mb,it make my computer very slow..so I combine with 512mb ram,the total is 639mb..but this ram decrease again 639mb to 383mb,it loose 128mb..very disapointed...now we are talking about MEMORY and not disk space aren't we?

Where are you reading these figures?Sounds like a bad stik of RAM...but as BC queried...where are these figures coming from ? ?

i had a computer die and this was my slave hdd so it is still in working order. anyways, the hdd has some data that i need to access. i purchased the external enclosure and i cannot access the data.

my new computer can see the DRIVE b/c it appears in Disk Management..but i cannot see it via windows explorer.

what do i need to do to access my data?

thanks in advance!

Give This a WHIRL...Thank you for the reply but i the link takes me to the following topic: How to take ownership of a file or a folder in Windows XP

I am not able to see any folders or the drive itself within windows explorer...i can only see the drive via 'Disk Management' and it will only allow me to format the hdd.

there is data on the hdd that i need to access. In that case i WOULD discard the enclosure idea and hook it up as an INTERNAL slave...much more reliable data transfer anyways.

And the ATX Motherboard I have is the ESC A780GM-A AMD 780 G

I got them both at TIGER Direct.com and I have a problem getting the Motherboard into the Tower.

I can get the Motherboard in the Tower and onto the I/O Plate ok. But the only Stand Offs that line up are
One in the Top Left Corner
One in the Top Right Corner
One in the Bottum Left Corner.

It seems ok and good but when I just tap the Motherboard or even just lightly tuch ware the CPU will go in the middle of the Motherboard I can here the Motherboard hitting the CASS.

And I know when I get the CPU and Heatsink on this Motherboard and RAM it will be havey and I don't WANT it to tuch the Cass.

Am I wrong thinking this will happen or when all I stand the Tower upright it will PULL the Motherboard away from the Cass a little??

ThanksIf no holes are lining up i would return the case, you do not want a shorting problem. On second thought it could be the board. sorry to confuse you.Nope.
Xavier you were correct the first time...it's the case.
MBoards have hold down holes and standoffs standardised...case manuf. do not.
Return the case and pick out a new one.

Smilodon makes nice ones if they are in your budget...That seems really odd, that a quality case like a TT Armor wouldn't line up with a standard ATX board's mounting holes.
I know that doesn't help, just wanted to comment on that.
I wonder if it's facing the right way. It would be a shame to purchase a new case simply because it wasn't noticed that all the REAR motherboard IO was pointing inwards.

Solve : Computer turns on but does not boot?

Answer»

Starting about a few weeks ago I would wake up or start my laptop computer and it would power up, but not BOOT anything. A simple hard boot would fix the problem.

Then last week the hard boot did not work, and I tried it multiple times. I tries letting it sit off, then sit on (i may have been too impatient) and nothing. So i took out the battery; nothing. Reseated the ram; nothing.

I did notice that when it turned on, the HD light would BLINK a few times and then go dark.

Then HP support told me to turn it off, take out the battery, hit the power swith, put the battery back, and turn it on. Like a miracle IT WORKED!!

But just 2 days later the same problem came back. I tried all the things i had DONE before and nothing.

This time HP had me re-install my video driver - nothing. So I did a recovery; and it was fixed, another miracle!

A few times it restarted with no problem, i could let it fall asleep and had no problem waking it up, perfect.

Then this morning, it all came back, no matter what I did it just wouldnt boot.

I let it stay off for a few hours and now I am on my laptop with no problems..but i am terrified to let it sleep or shut down again because i DONT think it will turn back on.

The power supply has no problems, the ram is seated correctly, and sometimes it boots just fine with no problems. So i dont know what the real problem could be, but i would really like to find out asap, i've studying to do!

Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Computer is HP tx1320 us, and i bought it just over 1 year ago.Hi, I so have hp experience, what you will need to do is contact hp and see if you can have the notebook sent in, there is a recall on some notebooks that have a service enhancement, contact hp and see if you can send it in, if you dont have a warranty and the computer doesnt fall under the service enhancement than you will have to send the notebook into the service enhancement whitch would cost about $425.00

Uninstall the avg [only for test purpose] to see if this the pblm.
I have managed to uninstall AVG 8.0. But it was annoying as when I tried to uninstall it, the program will not respond during the part where it uninstalls, after the scan so I had to use registry editor and deleted avg there. I'm not sure if that worked completely buy I don't see it in add or remove PROGRAMS anymore. Does this METHOD I have used work?
I will post if this has solved the problem or not.Hope that worked [respond]After uninstalling AVG. It does not seem to have solved the problem at all.
Any ideas?Check to see if it boots successfully and consistently in "Safe Mode". Safe Mode will start your computer with a minimal set of device drivers and WITHOUT most if not all of the applications that are scheduled to start automatically in "Normal" mode.

With Safe Mode you're checking to ensure the basic operating system software and your hard drive works.Clik Here

Solve : Weird sound coming through my speakers?

Answer»

I have an HP dv 1040 laptop and I just recently got a NEW mother board put in it because I plugged it it to an outlet and heard a "pop" I would not turn on at all.

I got it BACK a while ago and about 2 hours of use and no problems it started making some buzzing noises. It sounds like I am getting some feedback from the hard drive but I am not sure. I took it apart to see if any speaker wires or hard drive was grounded out or wires exposed I didn't see anything that looked out of the ordinary.

Does any one know why this might happen?

When I turn it off and then let it sit for a while the sound doesn't happen right away when turned on but as soon as my COMPUTER is loaded and I open a program the humming / buzzing sound begins.

Austinsounds like electrical noise from the HD. this is the phenomen like when you feel static on the TV while the vaccum is running. i suggest in replacing the speakers, adding a filtering curcuit to the speakers would probably void the warrnty and is hard without some soldering/electronics experience.

Sounds such as this OFTEN occurs when you are using your phone near the computer. Static noises is the term they used to describe such sound.I would return it to the SHOP that replaced the MBoard immediately...something isn't right.
Laptops are not designed to be self-serviced.I tried calling the place back to get it fixed but there is no answer and it was in Florida. I am located in Ohio. Everything works fine but the sound is unbearable. help.Do they have a website ? ?

Solve : Help on missing HD space?

Answer»

I have a "HP A6650F". It is running Vista and has a 500GM HD. I am only seeing about 365GB on the main and the recovery partition. I know that the system uses some of it. But 35GB?. Thanks in advanceWhich version of Vista are you running?

Windows Vista recommends you have at least 40GB total, with at least 15GB free. Vista does not actually takes up all 15GB (at least, not RIGHT away), but 'reserves' it for future program installations and/or updates/service packs.I am using Vista home premium. The HD is a 500GB and the "total" space is only saying 465GB. Thanks for the quick response
If you've used around 20GB then that is about right.

Do you know how much space you have used. What I am TALKING about is Total drive space, not used. I have a 500GB HD, in "computer management" it is showing the total as only 465GB total. I can not undersatnd where the other 35GB is?. I know taht some are taken by the system, but 35GB?. Check out the attachment if you don't mind

Thanks

First, let’s see how much storage space is currently allocated:

1. Click the start menu
2. Click on All Programs, and then Accessories
3. From the accessories menu, right click on Command Prompt and select “RUN as administrator”
4. Type “vssadmin list shadowstorage” into the command prompt
5. The results should tell you the amount of storage used and the maximum amount allotedThanks for all of the help. I have attached the numbers

[Saving space - attachment deleted by admin]HD manufacturers use Base 10 metric instead of Base 2.

your 500GB would be 500*1024*1024*1024 BYTES, or

536,870,912,000

but the actual size, because HD manufacturers use base 10, is

500,000,000,000

which the computer still divides up using it's base 2 logic. so your effectively missing 35GBs (36,870,912,000)Thanks for the response. If I am understanding you correcty, missing 35GB (not including used) of a 500GB is the norm?

Thanks againyes- HD manufacturers use the base-10 metric to describe the size of their products- but computers use their size using Base-2. It's almost always true that you'll find upon viewing the HD size your actual usable space is around 6% or 7% less because if this. It's not because any of the space is used by the OS- but rather because the space never existed.Ok, I guess there is nothing to woory about. I really appreciate the help

Chart Courtesy of Western Digital Corp.Great chart. I guess I am no longer confused. Thanks for all of the respones

Solve : Hoping to get new GFX card, need help.?

Answer»

Hello, I just got the Tomb Raider: Underworld demo and it said it had problems with Direct3D. I assume this has something to do with my GFX card, which is rather old now. I would like to buy a new one but I have no clue which to go for or which my motherboard is compatible with; these are my specs:

Processor: AMD Athlon XP 2800+ MMX, 3Dnow, 2.1 GHZ.
Memory: 2048MB RAM.
Display: NVidia GeForce 4 MX 4000.

I also have Direct-x 9.0 installed.

Can anyone advise me on which GFX card I should get? I want one for best performance.

Thank you! What's your budget, and your motherboard?
If you don't know your motherboard, please click here and follow the instructions.Heya, I don't have a budget per say, I am willing to spend good money on a good outcome.

My motherboard name: Kudoz QDI 7x/400A
It must only use DDR RAM
I also know the Bus type; DEC Alpha EV6

Thank you!OK, one last question - what's your POWER supply? How do I check that, sorry? Can anyone help? There should be a sticker on the power supply...it's the silver box on the upper rear where the power cord goes into...Quote

I don't have a budget per say, I am willing to spend good money on a good outcome.

we really need an actual number, graphics cards alone can get as high as $700. also, if your planning on purchasing a high end card, you will need to look at upgrading the rest of your comp to get the most out of it.Okay, so I DO have a budget, haha! Under £70 I guess, around there.

Okay I checked the powerpack; I don't know exactly what you want so here are ALL the details:

AC Input

115/230VAC 50/60HZ

AC Output

115/230VAC 1a/0.5A 50/60HZ

350 W
230 V

Mind you, another question (I know this is also software related) When I installed my Tomb Raider: Underworld demo it refused to RUN and told me there was a problem encountered with Direct3D. Is that because my graphics card is too old for the game to be run?Do Geforce do anything suitable for me?Depending on what card you decide on you will probably need a more powerful PSU...I am GETTING a XFX GeForce 8600GT XXX 256MB DDR3 and I have a Dell E520 and the stock PSU is rated 305W and other people iI have talked to say that they have the same card and PSU and it has worked with no problems, so i would say that your PSU should be fine to a point.Who have you talked to that uses that setup ? ?

Requirements
Minimum of a 350 Watt power supply.
(Minimum recommended power supply with +12 Volt current rating of 22 Amp Amps.)
Minimum 400 Watt for SLI mode system.
(Minimum recommended power supply with +12 Volt current rating of 24 Amp Amps.)

NOTE: These figures are from EVGA and are minimum requirements. Running at minimum will put more strain on the PSU then on one that has room to breathe.
