Solve : LCD Monitor squealing when fax on?

Answer»

Its been a while since I have been on this side of the table...

My LCD monitor squeals at a very high pitch that only I in my entire family can hear. It only happens when the Fax machine is on.

How do I stop the disturbance WITHOUT moving the fax machine to another location of the house?

Its an HP LCD Monitor, and an HP Office Jet J5780 All-In-One Printer (Great printer, excellent scanner, by the way)
The computer itself is also HP, however, its definately not the computer.

Thank you for your replies

- Zylstrahmmm- are the fax machine and monitor on the same circuit?

I have the same problem with televisions- I can "hear" when their on, even in another room of the house (this isn't SOUND coming from the TV speakers, either- some strange high-pitched warble.Quote from: BC_Programmer on November 14, 2008, 08:16:13 PM

hmmm- are the fax machine and monitor on the same circuit?
Yup, same outlet. I could try and switch them around and see what happens.
The problem is that I only have a limited number, I will see what i can do nevertheless.

The problem also occurs where my parents:
  • Cant hear it
  • Dont care
  • Assume it cant be that bad to listen to

Horrible noise, isnt it?

Horrible noise, isnt it?

It would be, but it's extremely quiet to the point I have to concentrate to hear it. Guess I'm lucky.Well, I changed the plugin it was in. I took it off the surge protector, and placed it on its own plug on the same outlet. The noise is greatly reduced, and much better. I can barely hear it now.

Now all I need to solve is the static issues that I am having with the LCD Monitors speakers. (BTW: The squeal wasnt from the speakers, since I turned those off and it continued to make noise)

Thanks, BC_Programmer If it's any consolation, the sensitivity to high pitched sounds above about 12 kiloHertz reduces with age. Most people under about 20-25 years old can hear (for example) the whistle around 15 kHz that TVs make, but older people cannot. It can be hard to make people believe how bad it can be. In England, some owners of shops use a device called the "Mosquito" to deter teens from gathering in groups outside. It emits a 17 kHz whistle which many young people find very irritating. However some teens take advantage of their sensitivity to high frequencies by using a "teen buzz" cellphone ringtone which (most) adults cannot hear.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Mosquito

These kind of things are really annoying.
My graphics card squeals under load - thankfully fairly quietly, but it's annoying. I wouldn't think anyone else in my house could hear it, and they wouldn't care if they could, as it's in my room.
TVs get to me, and the CRT monitors we use in college make a continuous very loud high pitched squeal after being on for a few hours. of course, the lecturers don't hear it and wonder why we can't do any work . . .
And the mosquito devices Dias mentions really get to me. Any shop which uses it I now avoid because I can't stand to get close enough to the sound to actually enter the door. Even if I'm across the street it still really gets me.
Another downside of being young I guess.

Anyway, just some slightly off topic comments I wanted to add.Our large CRT TV makes a squeal which my girlfriend can hear but I can't. Slight PRESSURE on the casing or moving the set about 1 cm can make it GO away, so I thnk it must the plastic case VIBRATING in sympathy with an internal component. I have heard of people attaching blobs of 2 pack epoxy ("Araldite" in the UK) to certain internal components to dampen the vibration but that is something for qualified personnel ONLY.
Is the noise in my head bothering anyone ? ?

Naw, I'm just jealous the voices only talk to you.

Solve : Computer Won't Boot Up (Nothing On Monitor). Help please?

Answer»

I wanted to install an xp 2200 cpu on a M848A motherboard on my brothers pc. He has an xp 1600 cpu in there and I wanted to install the 2200 since it's faster.

Anyway so I install the cpu.

When I plugged all the power cables back in and started the computer up, the monitor never came on. It just flashes and says no signal. I tried 2 different monitors. I know the agp card is in there tight. Still nothing. Tried a different vidoe card too.

So I PUT the xp 1600 cpu that I know works back in there and still the same thing keeps on happening.

Unfortunately I don't have a speaker cable for my CASE so I can't hear the problem.

Computer has windows xp.

The cpu fan spins, system fans spin, cd drive is powered up, hard drive sounds like it spins for about 5 seconds and then stops.

I tried clearing CMOS but nothing happens. In fact, it seems like I have to have it on the opposite settings for the computer to even boot up now. When the cmos is in the clear position, the system will boot, but when the jumpers are in the normal position, the system won't even power up.
Whose MBoard is this ? ? (manuf.)

Will it take the 2200 ? ?I assume the motherboard is MADE by "pc chips"

Their website is www.pcchipsusa.com

The 2200 cpu fits in the slot, but like I said earlier the system won't show up on the screen. Everything powers up, cd drive, hard drive, case fan, cpu fan...but nothing SHOWS up on the monitor. My atx case didn't include a speaker cable so I can't find out what's wrong that way.

The manual said it will work with all XP cpu's and the bios is 5.0 (which is the latest version). I even put the old 1600 cpu back in that I know without a doubt worked since it worked yesterday, but when I put it back in after the 2200 cpu didn't work, the same problem happened, nothing on the monitor. I tried switching it with dvi and vga with the video card, but nothing happened.

I tried clearing the CMOS, but maybe I'm not doing it properly or something.

As far as I can tell, everything is snugly in place, all the power cables are hooked up.

No idea what's wrong with it.
Are you saying you also don't get the MBoard splash screen at boot or any of the POST displays ? ?
If so try that monitor on another machine...
Next culprit would be the video itself...if onboard install a vid card to test ...There's no splash screen at all, nothing shows up on the monitor at all. I've tried two different monitors. There is no onboard video on this motherboard.

no post displays EITHER.

I know the two monitors I've used work. I've tried different video cards too.

Nothing shows up on the monitor either when I have no cpu in the slot (everything else powers up though)

I assume the motherboard is just fried.

Solve : Cannot boot or re-install after hardware change?

Answer»

I recently upgraded my motherboard, CPU and memory, but afterwards I cannot boot up. I tried a re-install too but still didn't work.

When it was trying to boot it seemed to get to the black Windows screen briefly before giving me the 'blue screen of death'. I tried a new Windows install with a CD, all seemed fine until 'starting Windows' appeared in the actions at the bottom left, and I got 'blue screen' again.

I just upgraded to:

ASUS P5QL-E Intel P43 (motherboard)
Intel Core 2 Duo E7300 2.66 1066FSB
GeIL 4MB (2x2GB) PC2-6400C4 800Mhz Black Dragon EVO ONE DDR2 Dual Channel kit.

I had an existing 500GB Sata HDD, the only thing I've changed on this is removed the jumper to allow 3g/b data transfer as my old MOBO could only handle 1.5.

I have a Creative Fata1ty X-fi soundcard and Radeon 512MB X1900XT PCIe graphics card in too, and a SATA DVDRW.

It's not giving me a lot of info on the blue screen as to what to try - my knowledge of setting up sata isn't good to be honest, I did change the drive from IDE to ACHI (or something similar) in the BIOS and one or two other small things, because when I tried the first boot up I didnt go into the BIOS and in the post messages it ended with FATAL ERROR - CHASSIS INTRUDED, SYSTEM ENDED or something as alarming (with two short POST beeps as well - non recurring). I restarted as couldn't see anything wrong, my monitor was POWERED up this time so I got into BIOS and changed a couple of things.

Does anyone have any ideas what to test or change? I'm sure you'll have a question or two as well, please fire away!

Thanks in advance.

(By the way have XP SP2 o/s.)

First things first.
Since you changed hardware in that machine chances are good that your install of XP will not boot properly...it's LOOKING for all the old devices.
The changes you made should be reversed if you are attempting to retrieve your data.
Move the jumper back where it was on the SATA HDD...also enter setup and change the drive settings back to IDE.
While in setup look for the chassis intrusion alarm and turn it off. This usually isn't needed in a home enviornment.

Hook up the drive in another machine on the SATA2 port on the MBoard. You should now be able to boot that machine and see your drive as the D: drive in Windows Explorer. Copy the data you need from it and you can burn it to CD/DVD later.

Re-install the SATA HDD in your machine and follow these instructions for a Clean Install of XP.

NOTE: Have your new MBoard CD handy as you will need it for the SATA/RAID driver prompt which will come up very early in the XP install at the bottom of the screen...it will say "Press F6 to install SATA drivers" then insert the driver CD so XP can install the SATA drivers.
After setup finishes run the setup on the MBoard driver CD to install your MBoard drivers.
Then continue on with any other drivers such as video; SOUND etc.

Good Luck and let us know if you have any questions.Hi, I've tried replacing the HDD in my old setup, and it seems to be working fine, it's only a couple of monhs old itself (Seagate Barracuda 7200.11). I don't need any data from it, that's been done.

I then tried it back in my new system with minimum build, but it's just the same - it seems to be as soon as Windows actually tries loading it crashes, now I know virtually nothing about software but I think it's a software/hardware conflict, I thin Windows just doesn't like something I've changed!

I have an original XP SP2 install CD which I have used a few times before, always with no problems. I don't have a floppy drive or any other disks that were mentioned on the clean install link. Normally it just loads up, boots from CD (after I amend the priorities to do so) and asks about partitions and file systems. But I can't get to this stage. Would it help if I deleted the existing partition using my old system, then try a fresh install with it in the new system I wonder? (sorry, I keep having to pop to internet cafe to check this site!)

I will change the drive settings back to IDE (does it need an IDE cable though? Or is it ok to leave SATA?) and I have tried replacing the jumper already. I haven't seen a chassis intrusion alarm that I can remember in BIOS but will have an in depth look now.

I was also wondering (though this might be a question for the software forum) if it's because I need a better Windows version - x64 XP or Vista to help with hardware compatibility?

The new Football Manager 09 is out tomorrow, I need it working before then lol!

Repeat...it will NOT boot up on the new setup. After a lot of slow testing it finally works fine - it was the change back to IDE in BIOS that did it. I find it pretty weird that a SATA2 HDD works by being set to IDE, but what do I know! Thanks for the advice, it was much appreciated. I have the HDD running fine at 3 instead of 1.5 too.

Thank you!

Anybody heard of these things slowing down internet LIKE this for some reason?I have only a 120GB ext. DRIVE, and I have never had any problems with it slowing the internet?? Never heard of this issue. If it is for backups try the WEB with the drive disconnected...see if there is a difference.
I've never heard this either...

Solve : PC tower case?

Answer»

Will storing food within the PC tower case cause problems?NOMINATED for strangest question of the year award.

to answer the question, your bread will go dusty, oranges will rot, and bananas... Don't even get me started about bananas...What?!!

Sorry but - can I say, tactfully as possible - when you become "Big Brain" this matter will no longer seem important!

I'd limit storage to relatively non-perishables ..... solid candy!! DEPENDS actually on how much RAM you have, PROCESSOR SPEED,and free space on HDD.
Start out with some of the simple items BC mentioned first before attempting lasagna or chicken paprikash.

If you post more info about the machine i'm sure others will have a few more suggestions.

Don't consider desserts at all unless you want to invest in another case fan.make sure to use COMPATIBLE foodstuffs. It's been reported that soup causes problems, as with pudding. However, some pundits have had mixed success with tapioca pudding, but had to go to the hospital after consuming it since it mixed with the thermal paste on the processor.

Just remember, a PC case is NOT a silo. sometimes- you already have enough grain.

Solve : What sound card do I need?

Answer»

I have a compaq 5WV257 computer, running (WIN ME). There is no sound card in it. I would like to know what sound card do I need? Where can I get one? Can I use any sound card if it fits in the slot ?
Thank you.You can install a PCI sound card into your BOARD. As far as buying one you can get at any computer store. You might want to check [GOOGLE] newegg.com to get a IDEA of what they look like. You can pretty much use any decent card - I have a spare Creative Soundblaster Live 24-bit soundcard you can have if you pay the postage? (I'm in UK). I've got a Creative X-Fi Fata1ty in my PC at the mo, one of the best you can get IMO (£100ish WORTH) so I won't miss the Soundblaster.

Solve : Audio input re-boots computer?

Answer»

Problem ..... Computer shutsdown and re-boots automaticaly when using the listed audio devices.

1) Microphone in the Mic Jack (front & BACK)

2) Opening of editing software 'Power Director' when the sound microphone icon is active.

3) Line input has my sony walkman (mini-disk type) installed for upload to 'Audacity'

All other sound functions work fine. E.G. Volume Control tests, internet video, Music Files, etc.

I recently installed a new video card (Radeon HD2600 Pro).

Old Video card was no good. Booted up the computer and all was well. installed ATI Software that came with video card. Has this installation caused my sound/crash/re-boot problem?

Solve : Takes hours to print?

Answer»

Hello,

I am using a Dell Insperon with windows XP. I have an HP C5180 printer on our wireless network. The printer is wired into the router. My wife and I both have LAPTOPS. Hers prints immediately. But when I try to print it takes several hours before the printer prints after I hit print. I will actually send a file to print and later, after supper, while we are watching TV it will just start printing. Any advice on how I resolve this issue?

Thank you for any INPUT,

TatorDo you have another printer to see if that one works? It MAY be a problem with the laptop connectivity to the printer.Try using a wired connection, it's possible your wireless connection is too weak for the file to get sent to the printer.
Also, if the file you try to print is very big, it will take a while to send over to the printer.I only have the one printer... and the wireless CONECTION to my computer SEEMS to be strong. The files are not big either, 1/4 page in word still takes a very long time.

Hope this helps.

TatorTry a wired connection.

Solve : eMachines Laptop RAM?

Answer»

I just bought an eMachines laptop model eMD620-5777. I would like to UPGRADE from 1 Gig to 2 Gigs. I have been to Crucial's site & Kingston's site and neither of them have this laptop listed. How can I find out what kind of RAM I need? I've opened the back panel and taken down the number that was on the back of the RAM stick and entered it in Google. Nothing came up. Can anyone help? If you need additional information, please LET me know. (This is the laptop listed on Best Buy's site on sale for $299.) Here is the link:
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=9057058&st=emachines+laptop&lp=1&type=product&cp=1&id=1218013392456
Any help is really appreciated! Thanks. Why not run the Online Scan at Crucial ? ?
eMachines use a BUNCH of different MBoards even on the same model # and the MBoard info is the most important when selecting RAM...SORRY, I forgot to say that I tried that but it said it could not DETECT my model. It knew I had two spots to put RAM in, but it couldn't detect what kind I had and wanted me to manually put in the model of laptop. I ended up emailing eMachines and they told me what kind of RAM I should get. I believe I found the kind of RAM I need on Kingston's site for $12.00! Now I'll just have to wait for it to come and see if it is right. I'll let you know.

Solve : SATA DVD Burner and IDE hard drive??

Answer»

Hi, Im Joe from the island of Crete in Greece. My computer spec states that it has a SATA HARD DRIVE but I bought a DVD burner last week and went to fit it and found that the hard drive is IDE. I have bought Sata data cables and power cables and powered the DVD burner okay but the computer will not recognise it. My Motherboard has 2 Serial ATA connectors which i have plugged the Sata data lead from the DVD burner into but the manual only mention connecting hard drives to these connectors!!!
Will I have to buy a new Sata hard drive or a new DVD burner to tie in with the IDE HD? Any thoughts please as I'm stuck!!! Have you went to the MANUFACTURERS site for your new DVD burner
and downloaded the SATA controllers needed for Windows XP?Try
the same IDEA with your motherboard manufacturer.DLoad and run Everest Home to FIND out what motherboard you have and post the results here....Hi...its joe again.....My motherboard is an Aopen AK86-L and I have visited the pioneer site for Sata controllers for my dvd drive and there are non and I have also gone to the aopen site and my motherboard is no longer listed there? Im still stuck!
Any help would be appreciatedHere Are Your DRIVERS for that MBoard...i suggest reading the downloadable manual to determine what order they need to be in. Chipset drivers go FIRST.

These are the SATA drivers you should use to get that SATA hard drive recognised.

NOTE: You need to make sure the drive jumpers on that SATA HDD are set to the 150G speed as this MBoard does not support the higher 300G speed. This is important as the board will not see the drive unless it is jumpered correctly.

Solve : Monitor has no red or yellow, only blue and green.?

Answer»

Please accept my appology if I have asked this in the wrong forum.
This is my first post, please help if you can. Recently my monitor stopped displaying anything but blue and greenish colors. I have tried multiple monitors and cables but get the same results. Therefore, I think it is something wrong with the computer itself. I have an "Emachines" model T3418 desktop computer. I tried the the emachines website and was given a troubleshooting web page but was not able to LOCATE anything in harmony with my problem. I would appreciate any assistance. Thanks Sounds like you need a NEW VIDEO card. The video card is where your monitor plugs into your computer. CHECK out this video.

Solve : External video cards??

Answer»

Have you guys heard of these? I'm not sure what they do, but I do hagve a question... If I got an external video card for my laptop, WOULD it be like installing a new card to the machine, like if I got a HIG definition card, would it play hd videos or whatever on my laptop? Meaning I could see it on the screen. I would like SOMETHING like that. Any information you got, I'm willing to listen!

thx

External video cards . . . if it's a USB video adapter, don;t expect much more than literally a video output.
If you mean the Expresscard Asus XG video cards, then it would be like adding a better card to your laptop, but they TEND to be very expensive.
Does that help?sure does. Because I have an NVIDIA GeForce4 440 Go 64m and it is becoming a little outdated. So, maybe I'll put that on my christmas list....They are expensive and not exactly built for gaming etc. but for everyday use are fine.
Which model are you considering ? ?If your laptop is that old, I doubt it's got an Expresscard slot for the Asus XG.well, I don't really know any models. Couldsomwone give me a list or whatever? I DO need one.

it is from 2005. It has a pcmcia card slot...Expresscard and PCMCIA are different unfortunately for you.
I also wasn't aware of laptops with Geforce 4 graphics being produced that late.Really? I didn't think that was late. I mean it was the best card on the market at the time.I bought my laptop in early 2006, my X1600 mobility had been out for a while. Going over to Nvidia, the competitor was the Go 7600, before that the 6600, before that the FX series, then the 4 series.
Your PARTICULAR card was launched in 2002, which is why it's surprising to see it in a laptop 3 years after its release.
just an FYI - in 2005, the best laptop card would have been the mobility Radeon X800XT or the Geforce Go 6800.

Solve : sata used with sata 2?

Answer»

Im getting a new base pc soon, and it comes with a sata 2 hd, i was wondering if i could use my sata drive from my old pc on that motherboard with the sata 2 drive (so theyre both running)

the sata hd contains data from my other pc (which id like to keep and use 'games and game saves etc) would that work or would i have to wipe the drive, or would it just not work anyway as ones sata and ones sata2?

thanxSATA will run on SATA2 connections...
HOWEVER since you are installing it on new hardware chances are it will not boot properly so you have 2 choices:
1) Hook it up on SATA2 or higher mboard connector and retrieve your important data...
Or
2)Repair Install of XPso I could just install the old sata drive into the new pc alongside the sata2 drive and run the WINDOWS cd drom boot then repair?

Yes.
But those instructions need to be followed to the letter...read them first and then print out a copy for reference before starting.I forgot to mention, im on vista premium

To hook my sata drive to the new motherboard holding the sata2 drive, how would i do that to retrieve data. The machine comes with vista premimum installed... the machine im getting is : http://www.cyberpowersystem.co.uk/system/mega_sales_II/d do you have a link that explains how i copy data from the old drive?

Im a noob at this as you can tell, and i really appreciate your patients and help.No problem...
But define what data exactly you need from the other drive...programs cannot be copied and expect to run...they need to be re-installed.
There is a beast in Windows called Files and Settings Transfer Wizard but i have yet to have it work successfully on any machine i've tried...

Let us KNOW.basically game saves.....and 'things' ive dl'd but can only reinstall from the files on my hd :-" (just data files and pictures etc) so if u know of a link that explains how to transfere raw data id really appreciate it

and thats about 100 gig of files........... ive ordered that pc.. it comes with a blank formated hd...no o/s... i have the windows cd that shipped with my DELL pc, so i was thinking just to load visat ONTO the machine with that cd, seeing as the dell pc is now dust, and i paid for that o/s........i have the keys etc, so i dont think it would be a problem (or would the install check if its a dell pc)

Thanx again for ur replies

one more thing i forgot to mention.. the new pc ships with PC6400 DDR2/800 Dual Channel Memory, i have two 1 gig modules of pc2 5300 ddr2 ram, would that be compatible with the new motherboard? The Dell CD is tied to the machine it shipped with...i'm afraid you are going to need a Windows CD.

Can't say for sure without knowing what MBoard it is.# Motherboard: (Quad-Core SUPPORT) MSI P31 Neo-F V2 P31 Chipset LGA775 FSB800/1066/1333 DDR2 MainboardThe Dell CD is tied to the machine it shipped with...i'm afraid you are going to need a Windows CD.

Ive just done some research on that issue, and apperently when the windows installs and u input the product key it will say its in use, you just need to phone up microsoft and tell them that youve upgraded your machine, for example if you upgraded your mother board you would need to do that. Well that info is slightly innaccurate and you may not be successful with MS.back to the original question, do u have a link with info on transfering rar files and raw data from my old sata hdrive to the new sata2 hdrive on the new pc? thanx

Solve : My HP a1230n will not boot up?

Answer»

Hey peeps I bought a HP a1230n back in Nov. of 2006 and now it doesn't want to boot up

About three weeks ago it started going into like a sleep mode if we left it idle for a couple of hours( but not alays going into the dead mode, was sporadic) and would not come out by moving mouse or pressing keys including 'esc' and the moon icon, I would have to press power button to restart, sometimes having to release button within a 'microsecond' of power down or it would come right back on and do nothing.
A week ago, we ( my adult children and a few of their friends sometimes use it)were watching some of the presidential funny videos on Youtube and then went in the other room for a couple of hours and again it went blank, but will not reboot.

Symptoms: When I press the power button, the processor light stays solid, for hours, and dosen't blink, both the CD and the DVD Drives blink like normal, and both fans inside the tower are running, harddrive seems to be running wide open continuously. No video or sound at all.

My actions:
I have tried connecting only the keyboard, mouse, and monitor and starting it. I've tried starting the tower with only the power plug connected( still solid processor light).I have taken out the heatsink, processor and fan and reinstalled them smoothing the grease for better coverage( there was about a 40 % restriction from dust/lint on the heatsink so it may have gotten hotter that was good for it, I have vacuumed the interior pretty well now). I have ,one at a time, disconnected each of the two RAMs, I have disconnected the CD and the DVD Drive, I have disconnected the Hard Drive, after all of this, there were times I would get a blink but would soon go solid . A friend checked my processor and the testor said it was good, although he said that wasn't definite, and we tried a new Power Source Unit, same results.I have looked for something broke or burnt but haven't seen anyting with my naked eye( I have't removed the mobo to inspect the bottom side). Monitor is a LCD TV and it is good because we have watched TV on it RECENTLY and right now I have it linked to my son's old laptop as his screen seems to be shorted out on his laptop.

Futhermore:
I am suspecting that a new processor and MOTHER board would solve my delima, and would like advice on where and which ones to purchase if that is the concensus for my problem.
I appreciate any ideas from anyone who responds, Thanks

I didn't metion it before, but I could not boot from reinstallation disc, and I also have tried to press 'F1', 'F3', 'F8','F9', 'F12' and the 'cntl' keys on startup.
I've read about 'BADCAPS' and resetting BIOs, but am not familiar with those. I did read about moving the jumper on the motherboard to reset RAM, would it hurt anything( lose settings) if I tried that???Are you hearing any POST beeps when you start it up? If so, try comparing them to the chart in your motherboards manual (or check website), they might give you an idea of what's going on.

Let us know if this helps. No 'Beeps' of any kind, just solid processor light, both fans running and the HDD seems to be running in 'fast' mode, plus the CD and DVD drive lights come on temporarily. You may have a hard drive failing...find out what make it is and DLoad the diagnostics from the manuf. site.
Follow the site instructions on creating a bootable CD.
Boot to the CD and RUN the Long test.
This will tell you if it is the drive going South...

Solve : Which Mobo should I be using???

Answer»

Which socket 939 mobo should i be using with my amd 4800+ (both have NVIDIA nforce 4 ultra chipset)

FOXCONN Nf4KU8AA or ECS KN1 Lite Extreme??

Any opinions would be greatly appreciated.
The ECS looks better to me as it supports SLI.No, MINE doesn't have sli, thats the extreme, not the lite extreme...Sorry, my mistake, I do apologise.
I'd still choose the ECS, it's got a GREAT review at dragonsteelmods.com.
That's if you have to stay with S939, ANYWAY.

Solve : Video Card Compatibility Issue?!?

Answer»

Sadly, my bios doesn't give me an option to disable the onboard...d'oh!

or maybe I am missing it, but I've looked up and down through that Bios. That probably means it is automatically disabled when a card is installed...a lot of MBoards do this.Instead of keeping the default PCI selected in the BIOS, I chose integrated (with the ATI card in) Everything booted up ok...hardware manager in windows SEEN the card, I installed the drivers. WENT back into the BIOS and chose PCI. Same thing

and it was one long beep, and two short beeps..and nothing comes up on my display

Solve : laptop HDD response?

Answer»

Hello,
I just found this forum while seeking help for a NAGGING problem. I have a five year old ThinkPad R40 which has always performed well. In the last few months, however, response time has become unacceptably long--taking up to five minutes to execute some basic functions like opening Expore or something. The common factor is that the HDD access LED is constantly lit and it sounds like it is running the HDD all the time. I've checked Task Manager and the most frequent process being run was often the McAfee anti-virus scan. But not always--and I now think that is the result and not the cause.
I checked the system event viewer and there is no error related to the disc.
Eventually the system comes through. I've defragmented the disc and checked for errors but all seems well. I've also done the McAfee clean up of the system. No improvement.
What else can I check? Could the HDD be going bad?

It sounds like that may be the case but to be sure find out what make that DRIVE is.
Then DLoad and run the FREE diagnostics from the drive manuf. site.
Run the long test and post back with the results...DEFRAGQuote from: patio on November 10, 2008, 12:30:27 PM

The disk drive is a Travelstar from Hitachi. Model IC25N060ATMR04-0
The only diagnostic I could find was a CD image of a "drive fitness test" at http://www.hitachigst.com/hdd/support/downloads/dft32_v414_b00.iso
Is that the right one? I don't have a diskette drive on the system. I tried this and put it on a CD. The disk ran fine on a different laptop I have, which also has a Travelstar, but this R40 wouldn't reboot from the CD. So I couldn't run it. Stuck again.

DEFRAG
As I mentioned in the initial note, I did defragment the disk with no change. Analysis indicates the disk is less than half FULL and the files are coherent.Yes that's the one...if it ran on another laptop then you created the disk successfully so congrats....many get hung up on this step.
Now you will need to enter Setup on your laptop and set it to BOOT to the CD drive first.
If you need more help in this post back.Quote from: patio on November 11, 2008, 08:37:09 AM

Oh, I should have realized that. Thank you.
Yes, I did get it to boot from the CD and ran the long diagnostics. It reported no errors.
What else can cause the HDD LED light to stay on so long and slow the response time?Back in the win98 days, my computer would often freeze solid while accessing my second drive. (D). The HD light would go solid, and I would be forced to reboot.

I did a surface scan... it found bad sectors and my freezing issue was resolved.

Try a surface scan with chkdsk- chkdsk /r

be warned, it will take a VERY long time.

If it finds bad sectors- the drive is going bad, but you have temporary relief from your issues.

Solve : Disk drives do not work.?

Answer»

I decided it was about time to do a good clean out of the the computer so after REMOVING all unwanted programs and software, i started to put some old pictures and movies onto disks. After making a few disks the program stopped working (sonic Record now) and i had to REBOOT. After the reboot i could not make any more cds and the drives will not read any disks, nor do they appear in My computer. I restored the computer back to when i knew it would read cds but still wont read them.
What have i done and what can i do to make it work again.

Note: i have 2 disk drives one dvd and one cd rw drive and neither workThose CD/DVD's may not be finalised...if not they can't be read normally.
DLoad and install the ISOBuster trial version and see if you can see the data...
If so you can extract the data to your hard drive and re-burn them without loss.

CDBurnerXPro is a fine burning program and is FREE.

I REMOVE Sonic from wherever i see it....but that's just me.if your a tech TYPE what you can try is differnt molex power connectors to it. Just something to try maybe reseting will work.

Solve : computer memory conflicting with Video memory requirements?

Answer»

I'm still using an old kind of memory

Ex. CRUCIAL 512MB PC133 SDRAM 133MHz Memory

I'm wondering if I can use any of the latest video cards on it like

HIS Radeon X1550 iFan Video Card - 256MB DDR2, PCI, (Dual Link) DVI, VGA, TV Out

or will I have to STICK with the old video cards

ATI Rage 128 Pro Video Card - 32MB SDRAM, PCI, VGA, Video Card

yes, you can use new video cards. graphic card memory doesn't matter with your PC133 ram stick memory.

All you need is a PSU that supports the card with no problem and also you need to get the right kind of graphics card (PCI, PCI-E or AGP) otherwise it won't work.there is one caveat- a lot of new drivers introduce instructions that are only supported on newer CPUs/Motherboard and/or address IO-ports that don't exist.

For example- my old computer could not handle any card newer then my radeon 7000VE, and EVEN then I had to manually replace a driver file with the windows 2000 driver to get it working. Nvidia cards simply Blue-screen upon using any 3d functionaility, same with other ATI cards, like my AIW 9000.Quote from: mcxeb52! on November 12, 2008, 07:56:25 PM

o ok, thnks for ur help, but how do i find out which graphic card do i need? i tried puttin in my old video card ATI Radeonx1050 AGPx8 256MB DDR and that didnt work

i think it supports PCI but im not sureWhat MBoard is this ? ?Asus P4B Rev. 1.05http://www.tweaktown.com/reviews/122/2/asus_p4b_i845_motherboard_review/index.html

1 AGP 4x (1.5v only) is what that above site says about your motherboard. I don't know if AGP8x is compatible with AGP4x, but I think so since it loks like AGP8x is just allowing for faster speeds but .... BETTER ask patio or someone to verify.I'm thinking of getting

1GB 168p: Capacity: 1GB
PC133 CL3
ECC SDRAM DIMM
(will this be compatible with the motherboard I'm using? don't know what does mean "CL3 ECC", something I should be worried about?)

ATI RADEON X800XT Platinum Edition (VIVO) 256MB GDDR3 AGP 8x/4x

http://www.tweaknews.net/reviews/x800xt/

on the cover it states AGP 8x/4x

Solve : no beep,no display, no reaction?

Hi! Thank you for reading my post problem, I hope all of u can help me for my problem,
thank you so much for helping me regarding to my problem about my computer

I was using my computer last NIGHT then suddenly my monitor was turnoff automatically,
but my CPU was still on status.
Then I try to HARD boot it by pressing the power on, after pressing the power on for a couple of SECONDS my computer was turn off.
When I try to turn on my CPU, my CPU has no beep and my monitor has no display,
the LED in my CPU is on the RED light and my monitor LED is in the Green light
I already change my power supply, RAM, Hard disk, Monitor and still there is no changes.
I’m using a motherboard P4M800-MV2, 0 (ECS – 15, Q22-012001) and also I am using a built in Video card for the motherboard.
Those are the things I’ve done to check what my CPU problem is

Thank you so much!
Have you checked your power save settings? What OS do you have?im sorry where/how can i see the power save settings?
im using Windows XP Prof.Quote from: ehye on November 13, 2008, 10:31:26 PM

Have you tried to install a video card? If the onboard video chip is shot, then plugging in a video card should resolve your issue. I looked that board up and it has a pci slot.
http://www.fixya.com/support/p569214-ecs_rs400_v1_0_motherboard

Also, when you switched out monitors, did you use the same cables from the old one?sir, i already install the video card, but it is still the same!

i get the same monitor that i used to, but still not working ..after reading your post again I see that the monitor doesn't come on after a re-boot, so that is "not" the power saving settings. Does the computer boot even though no Monitor or does the computer not boot now? btw, if you hold the power button in for a few seconds it is normal for the computer to shut down.actually it is not Boot now..

only the fan in Processor and LED is my sign that the CPU is Turn ON! I see that you have changed the PSU and the MoBo, but this points to a possible PSU problem. You MIGHT test the PSU to start with. I've installed new PSU's and had them go bad right away, so, it's not unusual for that to happen. The fact that the monitor just shut off after it had been working seems to indicate a hardware problem. Try unplugging monitor and see if the computer boots. If not, try removing the Video card and see if the computer boots. Be sure the computer is off and unplugged and that your grounded B4 you work on the inside and be very careful not to cause any ESD (static electricity) while your working on it. sir, im so sorry to tell you but i did not change the mobo.. i only change the PSU.
based to my observation sir, even i already change the PSU it still the same no display, no boot, no beep sound and no reaction! i already sad right now for what happen to my Computer. i already replace my video card and still the same, and i already unplug my monitor and test it but still "no display, no boot, no beep sound" only the fan and the LED remainds me that the CPU is turn On! Try the monitor on another machine first and we'll go from there...

Solve : burning DVDs and CDs?

Answer»

I've burned many CDs and/or DVDs and they eventually became unreadable. For example, I have a DVD with .jpg files (pictures) burned ONTO it. I didn't use any special program to burn the DVD. Using windows Vista, I simply inserted a recordable DVD and dragged the files over to the disk, and that was that.

I was able to retreive data from the DVD a few times after burning it. But today for some reason I'm unable to read the data off of it.....and it doesn't look like I'll be able to retrieve any data from it again.

Could someonw explain what a recording "session" is, or "multiple session"
Also, how to burn a DVD/CD any be able to use it on any computer???
Or gives me some helpful tips? In simple terms CDs, and DVDs come in two flavors: R (read only), and RW (read, and write).
RW type are like little hard drives (different type of storage method, but it doesn't matter at this point), you can write files to them, delete them, write new files, and so on.
R type can be written to only once (you can't delete anything). This is where "multiple session" kicks in. In order for R type to be read on any other computer, the writing session has to be closed ("closing disk"). As LONG as the session is open, you can still add more data to R type media. Some today, some tomorrow, and so on - hence "multiple session".

Now, off to your problem. What exactly happens, when you try to read data from those DVDs?Ok, the disk I'm having a problem with is a DVD/RW disk.

I have two optical drives in my computer. One is a DVD/CD RW combo, and the other is a plain DVD/CD drive. When I insert the disk into the RW drive, it reads the disk for a long time and then a window appears saying it's ok to "drag" files or folders over. My .jpg files don't show up anywhere...It's like they just disappeared... If I insert the disk into the Plain drive, it reads the disk for a while and then says:

J:\ is not accessible The disk structure is corrupted and unreadable

I used the disk yesterday and was able to read the .jpg files and now they are gone. In case you are wondering, I'm using Windows Vista Business, 512 MB ram, Pentium 4 (I know its not enough RAM, when I'm not poor I'll get more )

Do all CDs support multiple sessions? How do you close a session, or keep it open? If the session is closed does that mean it is closed for good? I'd start with trying that DVD on another computer to make sure, it's not disk, which went bad.
...and yes, when disk is closed, it's closed for good. You can't reopen it.I have no other computer to try the disk on at the moment, however, I checked a little more closely to narrow down the possibilities and this is how it breaks down...

I can put DVD+R disks into both drives and can read the data, fine.
I can put CD-R disks into both drives and can read the data, fine.
I can put DVD/RW disks into both drivese and can read the data, fine.

However, I cannot get either drive to read the data on that one DVD/RW disk
(with the .jpg files). When I look at the bottom of the disk I can SEE that it has stuff burned to the disk. But the drivese just spin the disk and don't display any data.

Incidentally, I've had problems in the past with the DVD/CD RW drive. It will not read certain DVD movies, even if they are brand new, but when I insert the same DVD movies into the plain DVD/CD drive they work fine. Actually, the reason I have the plain DVD/CD drive installed on my computer is for when I come across those certain DVD movies that the DVD/CD RW drive won't play.

Well, without checking that particular DVD on another computer, we won't know, if it's good, or bad DVD, won't we?
Since it can't be properly read in both drives, I suspect the DVD went bad.
On a top of it, it looks like your DVD RW drive is malfunctioning as well. Since that happens, we can't even try to make a copy of "bad"(?) DVD.I have an IBM computer, with Windows 98, Pent. 2, 256 MB of RAM. But it doesn't have a DVD drive in it. Only a CD drive. Would the test work if I took one of the DVD drives out of my computer and installed it in the IBM?

Is the purpose of the test to see how the DVD acts in another drive, or another computer?

I can TAKE the DVD with me to school tomorrow, I have a class and I can go early to check it in one of the schools computers.Quote

I can take the DVD with me to school tomorrow, I have a class and I can go early to check it in one of the schools computers.
That would be great...I'll do that and get back to you tomorrow...

thanks for WORKING with me on thisNo problem If I had problems with only one disk and that disk was a DVD-RW I don't think it would take Sherlock Holmes or Einstein to work out the reason. Especially if I had been using the same disk over and over. Bottom line: RW disks are unreliable and are not for archiving anything you want to keep.

OK..

I had the opportunity to try the disk in two other computers and wasn't able to read any data from the disk.Quote from: hot dog on November 13, 2008, 09:14:20 PM
OK..

If the disc was not finalised the machines won't read from it...DLoad and install the Free Trial of ISOBuster and see if it sees data on there. If it does then you are not finalising your burning sessions...

P.S. You can retrieve the data using the above program and start over.

I'm having a problem with my moniter.... a "frequency out of range" problem. It occurs when i try to run certain games...the games are "settlers 5" and the "total war-Rome" line of products. These games both worked for a while and then out of the blue the error started to occur I played the total war game for a month before it occurred and i played the settlers game for a day... i goggled the problem and tried to trouble shoot it myself but to no avail. I've reset my display properties and lowered the refresh RATE and set back a system restore to when the games did work, I also reinstalled the programs and updated drivers....I'm running xp and the graphics card is an Intel Extreme Graphics 2 (Intel 82865G) and the processor is an Intel Celeron 2.53 Ghz... have tried everything i can think of and nothing seems to work if anyone can help i would be grateful

That's already been tried.Have you tried uninstalling it and re install it again? Their might be some errors upon installing the game. Or maybe your graphic card is not capable in supporting the said game. Ok folks.....

I definetly have the updated drivers for the video card and my moniter is the default dell that is only about 2 years old...the one game has a menu to readjust resolution that didn't help. It even has a system checker and it tells me that the game should run on my box...don't think there are drivers for the moniter but could be wrong and don't really understand how to go about thatOK, I'm sorry but I don't think I can help you any further, I'm really not sure what's causing this issue.

Good luck, and I'm sorry I couldn't help.man....this sucks

Thanks to everyone who responded to this post but it's seems i'll never get to the bottom of itYou have integrated graphics not a graphics card...
Since it's a Dell only Dell drivers should be used...Dell's are very picky about this.

Solve : what's the latest?

Can someone update me on the latest in RAM and dual core-is it processors? What is this dual RAM -don't know the term I see listed on machines that usually run around $700 and up? How MUCH advertising hype is in these terms as far as actual increased PERFORMANCE goes? I'm going to get a new computer so I'd like to know what I can actually use and what is more than I need. I don't game a lot but some. Seems like whenever I buy a game it won't run because my machine is too slow. I'm mainly a web surfer but online videos don't work well on my outdated machine if at all. Let's start with a budget first...Can someone update me on the latest in RAM and dual core-is it processors?

Well I can GO into the HIGHER priced machines if I want to but is that a smart use of money? I'd really just like to know a little about dual ram and processors. I would RECOMMEND a Dell Inspiron if you're just surfing the web.

The computer wont recognize that a mouse is PLUGGED in, so I having trouble getting anything done, I have got it going sort of but is need of a lot of upgradingI still haven't figured out how to get my computer to give ME a massage.

Depending on the version of windows installed- with 98 and 95, you can often simply press cancel to close the dialog.

Solve : Motherboards kept on carpet...?

Answer»

I keep track of quite a few components in my storage closet for computer stuff at school...

Anyways, down in the bottom shelf, there are a ton of motherboard (I have no real use for them RIGHT now, and I dont know who put them in there like that).
They are all on either a kind of foam (soft) box padding, without being inside ESD bags (we dont have any) or on top of OLD carpet.

Is that a not-so-good-way to store these? (And hard drives) Think about it. Static electricity can destroy those boards. Have you ever walked across carpet in socks and then touched someone? Get them off the carpet. Even putting them inside of a cardboard box would be better than that. When you buy new computer components they come in anti-static bags. I always save those bags for other parts I might need to transport or store. We don't have those bags anymore (no, I didn't throw them away... this stuff has been around before I was put in charge of it)

I could just put them in the cupboard with nothing around them... is it fine if I stack them by layers with cardboard seperating them?
Its probably the best I can do.Quote from: Zylstra on November 16, 2008, 11:46:27 PM

Its probably the best I can do.

I never have problems with mine.I just keep parts
in a cardboard box with a plastic liner. As mentioned the anti-static bags are the best way...in a pinch seperated by cardboard will work but is not ideal.
As far as carpeting a definite no-no. Along with the static concerns certain dyes (red/grey ) use oxides for their color qualities which is basically a metallic component.

If you stop in your Local PC shop and ask they'll probably hand you a few dozen anti-static bags for nothing...another reason to support local small businesses. We dont have computer stores here... Why not just throw them away and use the space for SOMETHING that will actually be used in the future? If they're just LAYING around with nothing hooked up to them, they probably aren't worth keeping.... and then with any new parts you want to add to the pile.... put them in an anti-stat bag.The motherboards arent old....

They are on standby in case one of our more generic computers ceases to work.
Most of the power SUPPLY's in the custom builds are cheap, and many have gone out already.

Solve : Tried to install a new graphics card, now computer won't turn on...?

Answer»

I went to install a second graphics card (NVIDIA 260 GTX) and when I hit the power button, it flashed on for a second and powered off immediately. Now I can get it to even turn on.

I didn't smell or see any smoke.

I removed the second card and it still won't turn on.

I tried placing the first card into every available slot and no go.

I put my old card (NVIDIA 9600 GT) in every available slot and no go.

I UNPLUGGED and reattached all cables...still nothing.

I cycled my PSU and still nothing.

When I turn on the PSU, it looks like some LEDs (a power and reset switch near the bottom of the BOARD) on the mobo are lit, the sound card is lit (the mobo comes with its own), but it just won't turn on.

I think I may have connected the new card to the wrong slots on the back of my PSU. My cards take two 6-pin PCI-E cables. I had two open 6-pin slots on my PSU. But after closer inspection, I saw that those two slots were actually labelled "4-pin floppy" or something like that. Two of the PCI-E slots were being used for the first card and two other 6-pin slots were being used for my optical and hard drives (they were labeled E-SATA I think). The sole 8-pin slot on the back of the PSU was hooked up to my mobo, the 24-pin cable was connected to my mobo, and I still had two 8-pin cables coming straight from my PSU, but had no 8 to 6-pin converters, so I didn’t use them. They weren't connected to anything. It leads me to believe that there was a voltage difference and I fried something when I used those "floppy" 6-pin slots on the PSU to connect to my video card.

My PSU is a Thermaltake 850W Toughpower and my mobo is an ASUS Striker II Formula.

Any ideas, help, suggestions?

The only thing I've ever seen plugged into a video card from a PSU was a molex connector, PCI-E cables, if such a thing existed (rather they are slots) would come from the motherboard.

the revelation that you discovered it was really a 4-pin floppy connector is disheartening. If you had plugged the 4-pin floppy connector into the video card, you may have fried either the video card or the mobo, or both.

Maybe using the WORD slots is MISLEADING...

I did use PCI cables to connect the graphics card to the PSU.

They had 6-pins on each end.

The 6-pin "slots" on the back of the PSU that I used were actually labelled "4-pin peripheral or floppy connection," yet they had 6 holed for the 6-pin PCI-E cable to plug into. That PSU has modular cable design...did you consult the manual ? ?
I agree you probably fried those cards. For the record- there is no such thing as PCI cables...

Solve : Display failing after ten minutes.?

Answer»

Hi everyone.

This is my first time so first of all, hello to everyone!

So what brings me here is desktop PC has COME to a grinding halt after 3 years of use and abuse. Running windows XP, try my best to keep it clean of all viruses etc, and generally stay up to date with maintenance.

The problem seems to be in my video card, although i'm not really sure.

The symptoms: Computer works just FINE for ten minutes, until the display ceases to exist. Turning the computer on and off again won't work, although turning the computer off, waiting half an hour and turning it back on again will "sometimes" give me ten more minutes of display.

Internally, video card seems to get very hot, not sure if that is normal or not, as i have never had occasion to touch it before now.

So, what say you computer geeks? is my computer finished or is there hope for it yet?It may be an isuue with overheating. Download speedfan and post back with your temps.
http://www.filehippo.com/download_speedfan/unfortunately this is going to be a problem...

you see, when this first started happening, i decided that perhaps the problem was that my windows had had enough and that i should do a clean install.

so now i have quite an annoying problem of being halfway through reinstalling windows when display gives out.

in summary, no display - no windows reinstall - no speedfanI would un-install that video card and run it off of the onboard video to get the Windows install to complete properly.
But i'd still check the temps as well...are all fans functioning properly ?I don't think i have onboard video!

The motherboard is an Asus A8V series motherboard. The video card i've currently got is an Nvidia something or other, going into the AGP slot of the motherboard.

So, am i right that i don't have onboard video?

If that is the case, i'm thinking I'm going to have to buy a new video card. Could somebody please take a look at this site and tell me the cheapest thing i can get away with?

http://www.umart.com.au/newindex2.phtml?bid=2

I don't play games or do anything super GRAPHICS INTENSIVE, just anything that works will be fine.

Thanks for all your help everyone. That board doesn't have onboard video. You need to get ANOTHER AGP card. If you have a computer shop in your area you can probably get one there. This site has a good selection of AGP video cards to choose from:
http://search.pricewatch.com/s/search.asp?s=agp+video+card&cn=

If you know anyone else with a computer that has an AGP video card, you should borrow it, just to make sure the video card is the culprit.
By the way, are all of your fans spinning when you turn your computer on?yep, all fans spinning.

Unfortunately i don't know anyone who'd trust me enough to let me go into the insides of their computer.

my local computer shop is http://www.umart.com.au/newindex2.phtml?bid=2

Are all those AGP video cards going to be compatible with my current setup? can i just order any one of those?

Thanks for all your help.

Solve : Dual Monitoring - Extending Desktop > Laptop?

Answer»

Is it possible?

It is a working laptop, and I'd like to extend my desktop display onto my laptop display.

If so, an explanation on the process would be appreciated.

I am using Vista-64 bit.

Also running SLI with dual GeForce 7600's.

Thank you for any help possible.

What make and MODEL is your laptop? It has a VGA port on the side or back, right? Have you tried connecting a monitor to it? Please give details of what you've tried and what happened.

When you say, "extend my desktop display onto my laptop display", do you mean you want the two monitors to function as a single, wide display? Or, do you want to display separate applications on each monitor?I want to use my PC display as the main and second with my laptop display. I want them to be separated, not stretched across.

I have attempted to use a S-Video cable to connect between the two computers, and I had no luck thus far.

It is a Dell XPS, Model M1530I believe I mis-interpreted your original post. You're talking about two computers, a desktop and a laptop, right? SORRY, when you said desktop, I was thinking you meant what you normally see on your monitor, which is often referred to as the "desktop".

OK, you're talking about two computers. So, no, you can't do what you want to do, which is use the laptop as a second monitor for the other computer. You know that blue cable at the back of your desktop computer? You need one of those. Plug one end into another monitor in port on the desktop computer, and the other in the monitor OUT on the laptop.

I hope that works... I've only set up a laptop with a projector as a second display recently, it may be MUCH different the other way around...Quote from: GolemdS on October 31, 2008, 01:41:13 PM

You know that blue cable at the back of your desktop computer? You need one of those. Plug one end into another monitor in port on the desktop computer, and the other in the monitor OUT on the laptop.

Can you cite a REFERENCE on this? My advice is, don't do this. It could damage your computer(s). Your laptop is a computer, not a monitor to be connected to another computer's VGA cable. While you can't use either screen as an extention to the other one, you can connect an extra monitor to your laptop using a VGA cable attached to the video port in the back of your laptop, it still show the same in both of them though, I don't know if this is what you want to do, I hope this helps.Wally059,

You can use an extra monitor with either a laptop or a desk top and have two different things on each monitor. (If you want to know how to do this I can let you know but start a new post on it or search the forum as I believe OTHERS have asked this question before)

However I think the OP is wanting to use their laptop as the secondary monitor for their desktop and I would have to agree with Soybean and say this isn't possible.

Solve : DVDRAM won't burn CD-R?

Answer»

Hello,

My DVDRAM has stopped burning CD-R's. I can burn DVD-R's without any trouble. I used to be able to burn CD-R's but in the last few months or so I lost that ability. When I use Nero 7 it says 'waiting for the drive to become available' and asks for a blank CD even though there is a brand new one in the drive. When I use WINDOWS Media Player it asks for a blank CD-R even with one in the drive. I have enabled CD burning in the PROPERTIES menu of the DVDRAM drive.

I RUN Windows XP with SP3. My computer is an HP PAVILION with AMD Athlon XP 2800+, 2.08Ghz, 448MB of RAM, and an 80Gig harddrive.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Solve : Sound vanishes upon rebooting?

Recently I HELPED my friend reinstall XP on his computer and get everything up and running. The last problem I can't seem to fix is with the SOUND. Everytime we install the drivers for his onboard soundcard the computer reboots and sound works properly for him with no problems. If he reboots after that though, the drivers vanish and we have to reinstall them all over again. Is there something I'm missing somewhere where you can turn off the restoral of old drivers or setting upon a REBOOT?

Any help is greatly appreciated. Please click on Start, Click on Run, type the following and press Enter key.

services.msc

Please double click on Windows AUDIO

Please set start-up type to "Automatic"

Please click on Start button if the service is STOPPED

Solve : I can hear my processor working ... through my speakers.?

Answer»

This has been bugging me for a while now. Any time there's any sort of continuous loop going on within a program, I can hear a buzzing though my speakers and HEADPHONES if I crank the volume up. What's odd, is different things produce different sounds.

Examples:
- I keep Steam running constantly in my systray. Whenever someone on my friends list starts playing a game or sends me a MESSAGE, a small notification slides up from the systray displaying the info, pauses for a second, then slides back down. During the sliding processes, it creates a buzz/hum through my speakers.

- When I minimize or MAXIMIZE a window in Windows, there's a faint high-pitched buzz (almost like a gnat flying in your ear lol).

- When playing CPU intensive games, there's a constant hum/buzz which changes pitch depending on what I do in the game.

I'm using a Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L motherboard with onboard Realtek ALC888 audio chipset. And also, when I built this system, I had 2 OPTIONS how to hook up the front panel audio.. regulard and HD. I went with HD if this makes any difference.

I wasn't sure whether to put this under Windows or hardware, but I stuck it in hardware because I don't think it really has anything to do with my OS. Has anyone ever experienced this before? It's incredibly annoying. Does it sound like it's just crappy audio hardware?

might be interference from the video card. I've had this problem, don't think I ever really cared enough to try to fix it.Are all the screws in place on all your add-on cards including the vid card ? ?

Solve : USB Header help?

Answer»

I am connecting my Towers USB Wires to my Motherboards USB Header connection.

I know the Pin Layout and ware to find Pin 1. and Pin 2. that I understand but I NEED help with one thing.

The USB Cable coming from my Tower has all USB Wires and I know what they are and they are named.

But the First USB Wire says USB = 5 V and this goes on Pin 1. of the USB Header on my MOTHERBOARD.

Now when I look at my Motherboard it has Pin 1. USB PWR

So do you see what I am asking the Wires coming from the Tower do not match the Pin NAMES on the Motherboard so how do I know were they go.

Thanksplease tell me your joking.

USB PWR. whats PWR? power. what units are used to measure electrical power? Volts. the symbol for volts, V. how MANY volts are used for usb power? 5. what would the abbreviation be? 5V. what is present on the wire? 5V.No what I ment is the Wire coming from the cass says VCC and it should go to VCC on the Motherboard but it only has USB PWR.

So I did not know if USB PWR was ALSO called VCC.
And there are all other diferant wire names to and they don't match the Motherboard if I put them in wrong will it damage the Board?Does this help?

Printer might have an encoder loss, stepper motor is dragging, or DOT Matrix print head guide rod is dirty ( gummed up )...

There is an encoder WHEEL or linear encoder that most of the newer DOT matriix printers use to position the stepper motor in the correct position when hammering the pins out into the ribbon which then transfer to the paper. If there is an encoder problem, generally the printers fail the initial HOMING and error out with red light and make loud clunk as the print head slams in one direction and the printer is alerted of a problem.

However if a minor encoder loss you might have where everything starts to get more and more offset as the printing continues as the intermittent encoder loss starts to build up and add to the margin of error.

Other times I have seen wavy lines but generally not a very large offset is when the stepper motor that drives the print head back and forth is worn out and it fails to keep a smooth linear sweep as it is hammering the pins out to apply ink.

Then the most common problem is the metal guide rod is scored with scratches or grimed up and causes the print head to not move freely, which causes wavy lines and larger offsets as long as the printer doesnt detect the offset error and error out. You can CLEAN the guide rod with a soft cloth and rubbing alcohol. ( * Some printers require a mineral oil or Lithium Grease applied, which some run dry COPPER bearing on chromed steel for low friction. )

In addition Oki for example made some Dot Matrix printers that do not have a metal guide rod, but instead everything is plastic. Plastic Guides, plastic gears etc, and these generally experience problems like this when the moving plastic parts wear out and become sloppy. I think the Epson you have has the metal guide rod.

When cleamning the rod you will want to clean it to the point that no more grime is transferred to the dry or lightly alcoholed cloth, and be sure power is unplugged too when using alcohol which is flamable as always.

Solve : Computer Won't Boot After NVIDIA Video Card Install?

Answer»

When I started up my computer today I found that it will not boot. The startup runs until the part where the Windows logo should come up. When it gets to this point the
screen either turns black, states a disk read error and asks me to reboot, or SHOWS a black screen with a white blinking cursor at the top left corner.
While starting up it does show the Gateway screen and will let me enter BIOS. I reset BIOS to defualt system settings, but this did nothing to help.

Previously, actually yesterday from the time of this post, I installed a new video card. The video card that I had previously installed was a NVIDIA GeForce 6600. This
card was installed in the AGP slot on my computer. The new card I bought, a NVIDIA GeForce 8400, fit into my vacant PCI slot. I put in the 8400 and removed the 6600.
For some reason it wouldn't boot this way, so I put back in the 6600 while keeping the 8400 in at the same time and the computer started up. It worked all last night, but I think installing this new card is causing the problem that I'm having now. Currently both cards are still in the computer.

For now, since the computer won't really START, I can't give you any specifics about my system specs, but I can tell you what I remember.

System Manufacturer: Gateway
Operating System: Windows XP Professional SP3
Processor: Intel Pentium 4
Direct X: 9.0 c
Video Cards: NVIDIA GeForce 6600(AGP) & NVIDIA GeForce 8400(PCI)
RAM: 1GBNevermind it started up today when I got home from school.
Seeing as right now I'm on the once problem computer, I think it's safe to say that my solution worked.

For those who might have the same problem, make sure you don't have any kind of DISC in your CD-ROM/DVD-ROM drive.
For me this has never caused problems before, but when I took my COPY of Fallout 3 out of my disc drive the computer booted normally.
As to why now my computer won't boot with a CD in the drive and why it WOULD before...I do not know...

All I really know, and care about, at this point is that my computer works.

Gigabyte GA-Q35M-S2 Motherboard (Brand new today)
3GB Memory (2x 1GB 2x 512MB) (old from OEM BOARD)
Corsair VX550W PSU (Brand new today)
Geforce 8800GS GPU Alpha Dog (Not USED before today (Because previous PSU not powerful enough)
HDD and DVD not connected
HDD Seagate cuda 10 250GB
DVD-RAM (HP Original)

Hello, bit stuck with the above config, It basically wont power on! The board starts (gets as far as the Num, Caps and Scroll lights) then reboots.

The system used to start but a manual reboot (Ctrl-Alt-Del) or a change settings in the BIOS then save did not work.

It feels like an incompatibility between the MB and GPU, but hope it's just a INCORRECT Bios settingA few things you can try...
Pull both 512's and leave them out temporarily...
Double check the PSU power connectors including the 4 pin ATX and the GPU connector.

Reset the PSU by toggling the on/off switch on the PSU with the power cord removed.

Was thermal paste applied assembling the CPU/heatsink combo ? ?
All MBoard standoffs in place ? ?

Last but not least remove the vid card and re-seat it making sure to use the hold down screw on the card end tab...it's the Ground.

Let us know.it seems like patio has got you covered on this one, but i can tell you right now,

It feels like an incompatibility between the MB and GPU

its not that...

but hope it's just a incorrect Bios setting

...or that. if you cannot even boot to the BIOS, its not a BIOS setting thats causing you problems.Think the Board is blown now cos it wont work with only the CPU one stick of mem and using the onboard Almost RMA time, accoriding to the Gigabyte BIOS page BIOS F2 will solve the issues that the board auto-starts on inseration of power cord (or the switch on the PSU)

The Board does have that issue so maybe if i can get the board to boot then i can flash to F4?

http://www.giga-byte.co.uk/Support/Motherboard/BIOS_Model.aspx?ProductID=2728

Plot thickens....

okay so I removed the mem stick to hear if i got beeps! nothing

Then I removed the CPU Fan header still no "joy"

Then I removed half of the 4*2 ATX 12V Plug (appently you only need all 4 pins for an Extreme edition CPU (or maybe a 125W model?)

Anyway the machine is now running with the OLD PSU one 512MB stick and of course CPU and Onboard.....

The Bios version is F2 (Not F4) but dont want to update because IIRC that invalidates the warranty??
Time to RTFM!!

The ATX_12V_2X power connector is compatible with power supplies with 2x2 12V power
connector. When using a power supply providing a 2x4 12V and power connector, remove the
protective covers from the 12V power connector and the main power connector on the motherboard.
Do not insert the power supply cables into pins under the protective covers when using a power
supply providing a 2x2 12V power connector

DOH!!!! LSNED (Learn Something New Every Day) WELL It's still not happy (It wont always boot up) despite my best efforts seems to be very sensitive about the power, i.e it wont ACCEPT a cold switch off (similar to as if the CMOS batt was flat.)SLOW DOWN DAVID! ! !

from what i have read, you are too inexperienced to do such troubleshooting by yourself without guidance. you may actually cause MORE problems by your troubleshooting methods. with that being said follow these instructions carefully and DO NOT assume you know what the problem is and how to fix it; we will walk you through it.

***BE SURE TO GROUND YOURSELF BEFORE DEALING WITH YOUR COMPUTER COMPONENTS***

1. disassemble PC (take out mobo, graphics card, harddrive, RAM, optical drives, etc.)
2. reassemble PC on a rubber mat or a piece of cardboard using all your new hardware. (your new power supply, graphics card, motherboard; leave the old RAM out, at least for now.)
3. power up the PC
4. report back to us whether or not the PC booted up.
5. if you have ANY questions, dont hesitate to ask. DONT ASSUME!!!
The computer works fine with another Power supply from PC World and the Corsair PSU only works with motherboards that dont have a "pre-flight check" startup, the Corsair booted up older motherboards that dont have this

Anyway the Corsair is RMA now and sorry it took so long to get back to you.
