Solve : Computer is running hotter than usual?

Answer»

Hello,

My computer is RUNNING hotter than usual. I dont know the temp, I dont think my motherboard supports that ability to show the temp. The issue it that there is ALOT of heat coming from my computer. It is making my room extremely hot! I know it never used to run hot, and am thinking something may have been damaged during the move. Any info would be great. ThanksLet it cool down an install speedfan an we will go from there.Alright, I downloaded SpeedFan. Heres the temp info:

GPU: 48c
temp1: 39c
Temp2: 45c
Temp3: 23c
temp: 127C
temp: 127c
HD0: 46c
HD1: 45c
Temp1: 40c

And Fan SPEEDS:

Fan1: 1815
Fan2: 3516
Fan3: 831
Fan4: 0
Fan5: 0

Ok so wow, cow can I tell what is running at 127c? Thats crazy if something is running that hot, but with the amount of heat comeing out I believe it.The 2 temp's that are at 127c are staying at 127c. They do not change in temp at all, all the other trmps change... I dont get it :/The 127C temps are almost certainly broken/non-existent sensors, so don't worry about them.
The amount of heat coming from your machine can't be reduced UNLESS you swap the hardware or slow it down.
Your CPU doesn't seem to have a temperature sensor, but your other temps should be fine, other than your HDDs - they're a little warm.
What are your computer's specifications, and/or make and model?Quote from: JohnW on June 21, 2009, 07:27:33 AM

Where do you notice most of the heat coming? Is it from the back of your PSU (power supply UNIT), where the PSU fan exhausts air? If you put your hand on the case above the PSU, does the case feel a lot hotter there than the rest of the case?

Solve : Having some trouble booting up my new system?

Answer»

Hello, I'm having a bit of difficulty booting up my new setup for the first time. I hit the power button and EVERYTHING lights up and all fans run fine, however, I GET no display on the screen. The monitor looks like it's checking whether it's running analog or digital (which it always does) and then just goes BLACK and the monitor power button LED flashes... I checked the video card (which is a 9800 GTX+) and everything seems to be in place and the fan on the video card runs fine... I thought perhaps it wasn't SEATED right in the PCI-E slot so I took it out and repositioned it, same problem... Any suggestions? I'm thinking of swapping out the video card from the setup I'm typing this from and putting it in the new setup to see if it makes a difference... Any help would be much appreciated! Thanks!sorry for the double post, but as an update, I just noticed I have onboard video and I'm plugging into my PCI-E video card.... would I want to plug in to the motherboard monitor port and then try to boot up and see if I can somehow DISABLE the onboard video?also I get no post beep of any kindSomething else is probably wrong, yes that is possibly occuring you could try connencting it. You will probably need to disable it, it should be pnp.Is it possible that the hard drive is DOA? Is there any easy way to determine if it is working or not? I have no LED to confirm...DLoad the free diagnostics from the drive makers site...
Use it to create a bootable CD and test the drive...
Run the long test.I tried taking out the 9800 GTX+ and booting from the onboard video... Still the same issue: blinking LED on the monitor power button, no display, no 'not connected' message on the monitor, and no post beep. I'm thinking now it may be the mobo? All of the fans are spinning including the CPU fan that is directly hooked up to the mobo.... I had a friend with pretty much this exact same issue and it turned out to be a defective mobo... Does that seem plausible?hello friend, u can look out for the power supply .or try to reinstall the system .thank youcheck the header I/O to make sure everything is set right. Patio at this point something like that isnt plausable an we have to treat it that way. If the HD is bad you still wouldnt see anything, what you can do is fire it up an feel the drive is it spining at all?

Solve : Can i put any hard drive in my laptop and have it run properly??

Answer»

I have an old Toshiba laptop that i got for free from my neighbor. It is a 2003 model i believe and he gave it to me because it had hard drive FAILURE and did not WANT to get it fixed. I'm curious if i could get my Dell desktop computer's hard drive and stick it in the laptop so i can have a mobile machine. Is this possible or no? If not possible what is a FAIRLY cheap alternative? I am a tight on cash so i do'nt want to spend to much money on this. No, you can't SIMPLY put desktop computer's hard drive in a laptop. Desktop computers and laptops use different size (in physical dimensions) hard drives. Desktop hard drives are normally 3.5 inch hard drives, while laptop hard drives are 2.5 inch. Looks like $50 is going to be about the minimum cost for a hard drive for your laptop; see >here<.

You also need to determine whether you need an ATA or SATA drive. If you tell us exactly what model laptop you have, someone should be ABLE to help with this determination.No.
You will need a laptop drive...they are 2.5" in size.
Desktop drives are quite larger.

Oooops ...Soybean....i didn't see you coming !
well thats a bummer... all i know about the laptop is that it is a Toshiba satellite... thanks a bunch though i'll just stick to my desktop I guessProbably worth buying a drive for it though...
Of course you would have to install an OS as well.

Solve : VIDEO CARD UPGRADE?

Answer»

Trying to use a new flight simulator, I get a msg that my card can't show shades, all I have is the video system that came with my computer. I'm running win xp with service pk 3, pen 4, 2.0 MHz, with 512 ram,1 AGP slot, and 3 expansion slots. I have an IBM netvista m21 8303 desktop model, so any cards that I add must be low profile. I read some where that you can't upgrade a video card in an expansion slot if you have an AGP slot that can be used for a video upgrade?, I really don't know much about this stuff so if you could help me out, that would be gr8. thank youWhat's your budget for an upgrade?
Also, welcome to the forums.I also agree that a complete system upgrade to a different ( Newer System ) MAY be the better direction if you can afford to do so...

ranger, I like your reasoning behind what you are trying to do vis-a vis the "wife" thing-classy. But an alternative is that you could say to her (if you can afford the cost--of the new computer i mean) that you value her gift so much to do it justice you really NEED to upgrade your computer. truenorthNot SURE how far we GOT but with those SPEC's its not worth it. My sister had to get a new laptop to run it an it takes alot just for it to have run like its suppose too. I would get a faster cpu an more ram as well if you want it to work on this machine. I had a 2.8 ghz pent 4 an 1 gb of ram an still noticed lacking so thats probably the best thing to do. Quote from: squall_01 on June 21, 2009, 06:25:10 AM

Yeah, that's what I've been thinking, that I just have to buy a little bigger, better, faster computer. I kinda wanted to see if I could upgrade my old computer but, more RAM $, faster CPU $$, power supply upgrade $$$, faster video card $$$$, would almost spend that much on a new computer, thanks, I see the light.Thats good cause her machine has dual core. I maybe able to run it only cause I can get the stuff required but its probably easier if you just got a new one.

Solve : video?

Answer»

everything displays fine for most programs but video from u-tube, tv shows, movies are very dark. i can adjust the increase the brightness and they display fine but it's a NUISANCE to need to adjust it back and forth all the time.Right Click the Desktop and go to your Graphics Properties. Look for something like 'Video OVERLAY' or ANYTHING similar. With these settings, you can adjust video display settings. Many TIMES it is the quality of the original vids on youtube that are the issue...I should have added to the above that when i TURN up the brightness to display video and go back to other programs everything is washed out

Solve : How do I install LG Flatron W1642S screen??

Answer»

(using Windows XP)

Morning everyone!

According to the instructions, I insert the driver CD then GO to Control Panel -> Display -> Settings -> Advanced -> Monitor.

There I'm supposed to click on "PROPERTIES", and install the monitor there.

But the "Properties" button is not clickable in my case, and under Monitor Settings I can only select "Use hardware default setting".

Do you know how I can install this monitor?
Install it via Device Manager:

Right Click 'My Computer' > Manage > Device Manager

Expand the 'Monitors' section, right click the item that's in the monitors category and select 'Update Driver'.Thank you for the response; there's nothing called "Monitor" but I found a yellow exclamation mark next to "Video Controller".

Is this what's causing the problem? Do you have some advice? Here's a screen capture:

Are you using ONBOARD video or do you have a vid card installed ? ?
You are MISSING the drivers.
The PC should have shipped with a Drivers CD...
If not DLoad install and run Everest Home (Free) and post only the Computer Summary portion here...
We'll take a look.Thank you patio! Everest Home told me the name of the video card so I could search for its drivers.

After installing them it also gave me the option to update the monitor driver so I could finally update it with the correct drivers from the monitor CD.

It's still not displaying the correct widescreen ratio but I think now it's the video card (VIA/S3G Unichrome Pro IGP 64MB) that cannot do the right widescreen RESOLUTION ratio? Very possible...
The website will have the specs listed.

Isn't Everest neat ? ?

Everest is sweeeet

It is the ten CENT coin. The "dime" is about 1.7 cm in diameter. Solve : Patio, opinion about registery tools.?

Answer»

I've seen in alot of threads that you do not like registery tools however you do not offer any solutions to correct registery problems. Could you elaborate on why or what you use to correct issues. I had some issues with my computer, a friend suggested Registery Mechanic and it seemed to help my computer quite a bit. I'd like to understand your take on the subject instead of just don't use them. Thanks in advance for your response and if anyone else has any opinions I'd like to here from you as well.this has been discussed to DEATH in the forum.

the reason they are useless is there is no way to DIFFERENTIATE "bad data" from good data within the registry, which is why a lot of runs of these so called "Cleaners" their internal hueristics might decide that certain data VALUES are invalid- for example, many flag filenames in the registry that don't exist. What if the path points to a disconnected network drive? The cleaner will flag it and delete it, and the next time the app is run it will perform unexpectedly, possibly crashing.

Additionally although verifying the existence of COM server DLL,OCX, and EXE file is a simple directory lookup some configurations might have some of the registered com components on removable drive. run the cleaner while it's unplugged and it will delete the otherwise perfectly valid entries.

This situation compounds when it tries to verify component categories and CLSID's between the versions of the same component.

It boils down to this- Registry cleaners, regardless of the amount of hueristic data can not foresee how, or what applications store in the registry and thus it is a fools errand to try to define some standard.

This isn't even factoring in the use of the term "corrupt". If a registry is corrupted- windows won't boot. you cannot have a few "corrupted entries" unless specific applications purposely wrote those values to the registry. I've found most "corruption" as flagged by these so called registry cleaners is a REG_BINARY type that an application uses. Of course the proposed fix is the delete the entry, rendering that application unusable.

I've said it once and I'll say it again- the fact that registry cleaners even have a market is simply because of the instilled preconception by users that it holds anything more then mere data. It's a data repository, and nothing more; basically a giant conglomeration of Heirarchal INI files, really.

Why was there never a "INI file cleaner"? the same reason there shouldn't be one now- there is no way to objectively decide wether a foreign program's data is valid or not- but there wasn't- for the sole reason that people UNDERSTOOD INI files, Now, there is a cloud of CONFUSION over the registry. I've heard people refer to it as the "brain" of windows, which is like calling a acountants paper his brain- completely false. The reason registry cleaner's exist at all is because people think they are useful, when in fact the only purpose they serve is a placebo to the user who actually believes there is a such thing as a "registry issue". There isn't.

The only reason the registry even exists is thanks to OLE and COM, which used the windows 3.1 registry to save OLE registration information. Later versions removed the registry size limit (to some degree) and improved the node/key heirarchy. The registry's main purpose is to store COM/OLE registration, File association, and other system specific information, and as I said, no program can pass judgement on what another program considers to be valid. So what if a string looks like a filename? Without knowing how the application loading that string uses it the cleaner program has no business flagging it as "corrupt" or "file missing" or anything of the sort.

ONE change- a registry cleaner has only one, very specific use case- the removal of orphaned CLSID entries during the development of a COM component. Now I'm going to go out on a limb and say the average user really doesn't develop COM components. However- this use is PURELY cosmetic- a larger registry instills absolutely no time penalty of any sort, and the symptoms that people often diagnose as a "corrupt registry" or "registry issues" are 100% caused by malware. Warranted, the malware installs itself via registry keys in the Winlogon notify, RUN, and various plugin keys for the shell, but that doesn't make the entries invalid anyway- they are perfectly legal, which is why a spyware app is required to properly remove the entries, since it can flag the DLL's in question as malicious and thusly knows via it's database exactly how to go about removing it.

You haven't given any reason for Reg Mech seeming to help your computer, what was wrong with it in the first place?.

I have no opinion about registry 'cleaners', I don't use such a beast, but will admit to using the registry optimiser NTREGOPT which is an ERUNT companion - see here .

Lots of opinions on reg cleaners here.

Good luck.
Most (if not all) registry cleaners have an option to prompt you with changes before they're made. Then again, if you don't know what you're looking at and don't know what the entries are, you're more likely to make the system worse than better."What BC said"......

I have had programs that are not responding or my kids do something to the computer so that the programs do not operate as responsively as they normally do. After running Reg. Mec. those programs operate more smothly and efficiently. Thats why I asked the question.
So, If you guys have programs that tend to not respond often or that slow down, what do you do?the key word you're placing everywhere is "Seeming" to help.

Quote from: chevronman on March 07, 2009, 03:02:35 PM
So, If you guys have programs that tend to not respond often or that slow down, what do you do?

-uninstall the latest addons.

-Stop writing code that calls an API with a 4 byte buffer but tells it the buffer is 2MB. (woops)
-remind myself that an infinite loop is never the answer to any problem.

but in all seriousness- there are far more "scientific" ways of going about solving computer problems then relying on a "magic bullet" solution of a "registry cleaner".

As an example, recently my oft used program, Visual Basic 6, started putting up a WMI installation dialog for Visual studio 2005. I cancelled it for about a week before deciding to figure out *censored* was going on.

Repaired my Visual Studio 2005 install, and all was well again.

In any case- my system is generally very stable, with perhaps one application crash a week. (not counting my misadventures with new APIs)So I guess I'm pretty lucky then because the issues that I have had have been few and far between also it sounds like I have been lucky that I have not created other issues using programs like that. I appreciate the explanation. For those of you that have been using web sites like this for sometime I'm sure alot of these problems are redundant however, for those of us who are just now really getting involved in computers we are way behind the curve.

Solve : CPU constantly at 100%, no virus(?), no odd processes running, need help.?

Answer»

For the record, I posted this in hardware because I am not entirely sure this isn't a hardware issue. I hope my motherboard isn't going to crap (I don't have money to replace the blasted thing and I've only got a Pentium 4 3.0GHz socket 478 system w/ a gig of RAM and a 512MB 7300GT AGP 8X GPU as a backup. Its about as useful for gaming as this rig has become.

Alright so today I noticed my CPU has been pulling a balancing act between the two cores, leveling out at about 100% load, its REALLY annoying, however, its not crippling basic usage, just gaming, and any other resource intensive program. I have a Core 2 Duo E4500 and the cores are sharing the load like a COUPLE DRUNKEN jugglers. But it seems to be FINE for now. I dunno which'll go first, the CPU or my sanity. I've been trying to fix this off and on for most of the day.

As you can see, nada, nothing strange, nothing that doesn't belong, and most of all, simply nothing that has caused this before. I am absolutely baffled. On top of this, I get an error that the windows installer won't initialize since this happened. I don't remember the exact code but a lot of stuff won't install/uninstall now, I thought it was a virus, ran AVG, nothing but some tracking cookies.

To be honest, I am completely baffled as to what is causing this, but its driving me nuts, I would be more concerned about it but I think a format would fix it; However, I do NOT want to have to reinstall windows XP, my CPU is only running at about 99F, so I don't have to worry about it burning out from the load, but I'd still like to have this resolved as fast as possible. Well, AVG is rather known for that.
In any case, as you can see from the log, its process is running anyway.
Anyway, you can't be without AV program.
system process is taking 50% of your CPU cycles.
Unfortunately, it can be almost anything, making system process running high, software, or hardware.

This is what I propose.

Working on downloading/installing the software, I'm not a fan of Avast, but, *censored* if I can fix this. I can't believe I didn't see that the system and system idle process where using that much of my CPU, this makes no sense. I'll upload a new report as soon as I install Comodo and/or AvastOh *censored*, I was afraid of this, I think the System process has been hijacked, but how the *censored* does that just happen? I haven't installed anything.

The firewall told me the System process is trying to broadcast to this:

I, of course, with my new god powers over packets, blocked it.

'Nother note, I'm updating the Comodo's built in antivirus, gonna use it to see if i can't root out this cancerous annoyance that has somehow wormed its way onto my drive. I'm just GLAD its not a key logger or some such. I would also like to note that the computer has been hanging on shutdowns since the problem emerged, I forgot to mention this 'til the last reboot. I think its just idling blasting god knows where with packets. I installed a packet sniffer, WireShark, I've heard its good, I can't find anything unusual but there is a flood of packets long enough to make my head explode... I think it might be attacking... Google...System idle process is CPU NOT used, so it should be as high as possible.
System process is your problem.

Solve : Baffelling computer problem?

Answer»

Im sitting here at work and decided that I would post something here to see if anyone has had similar issues and what the problem was. I have a new Core i7 920 in an ASUS motherboard with 6gigs of DDR3 1600. At first everything was fine. Then the computer would randomly crash. Its not the PS as in other build it works fine. Nor is it a graphic card issue as with other graphic cards, the problem persists. I figured it was either the memory or the MB. I had the MB tested and the lab said it was ok. I ran MEMTEST 3.5 with all three sticks and it LOCKED up after 15hrs. I took two out and it ran for 28 hrs with no problems or errors. I put in one more STICK and it ran fine for 40+ hours before suddenly rebooting and now thats all it does. It will load up to memtest and run for 5 seconds then reboot. Will bad memory cause a reboot in memtest? Or is this likely a motherboard issue?Yes.
1 or more of those 3 stiks are bad...
Run MemTest on them 1 at a time to find the culprit...If I have another computer that has DD3 1333 or 1066 (I cant remember) support, can I use the DDR3 1600 chips in it to test them on a different MB that is known to be just fine?

Also, can bad memory ever ruin a MB?, don't want this to happen.

RegardsOnly if the MBoard supports that speed...

Solve : More graphics card help please?

Answer»

Ok I got some great info from you all Thanks. Now I'm looking at buying a graphics card on Ebay but the price is pretty low compared to others so I want to MAKE sure this card will work and it's a safe buy.

My system:

Dell optiplex 760 80 GB drive
intel E8400 3.06GHZ core 2 duo 1333MHZ FSB
3 g mem DDr2
1 PCIe X16 Graphics expansion slot

Has integrated Video which I want to upgrade for cad capibility.
The card I'm looking at is a 1 GB nVIDIA Ge Force PCI EXPRESS x16

The PROGRAM I'm using ( Chief Architect) recommends 512 or better so the 1 Gb mem sounds good but the price is half ( $61.00) or less then what I've been comparing to. Is this a good choice for me and is this a deal or a scam? Any thoughts will be helpful.
Thanks,
JessQuote

Specifically, what graphics chip is on that card?It should work, but your power supply could be a little weak for it depending on what card it ACTUALLY is. What power supply do you have too?Nvidia GeForce 9400 GT.
I have a 300 watt power supply.

I have a new 350 watt power supply I think I can install if thats better. You'll need more than that...Nvidias site says 300 is the MINIMUM you need. I would put the 350 in to be safe

Solve : Power issues????

Answer»

This is what happened, sorry if long, during an electrical storm this summer, I went to unplug all our devices that would be sensitive to electricity and the tower computer did not shut down all the way and I unplugged it anyway, for fear of frying it....well, it has not turned back on since. I took it to a local place and they said it was not the POWER supply and had no SUGGESTIONS, $100 later......
I got inquisitive and took the computer power supply out myself, checked to see if I COULD see anything specific that may be burnt or whatever, and I saw nothing, put the power supply back in the computer and it worked~! for 1 week, but is now dead again.......
A green light on the motherboard is the only thing that lights up, sb power1 is what is printed by it, I guess that is standby power?

If anyone knows or has any other tests I could do or ideas, it would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you for your time.A Dell Dimension 2350 I got did something similar.
I tested it's power supply with another system "My Open PC" and the green light was the only thing on. I gone back to the old Power Supply and it worked.
I guess you can spend $20 on a Power Supply unless your PC is old, otherwise, get a new or refurbished PC.Why you would ever suggest a $20.00 PSU i can't fathom...what is wrong with a 20 power supply?Only you can decide that...if you have a machine that has Hundreds of dollars of expensive components in it which all rely on steady durable power and you decide to just shell out 20 Bucks on it by all means...go for it.Dell Dimension 2350 .
The above computer does not deserve a $20 power supply.
You can get a used one with everything for under $50.
As to the original post, in case of electrical storm is the computer was connected in any way to any kind of outside wiring the electrical storm would've wipe out the motherboard. This would be a telephone connection to the modem. Or if he had a DSL connection that also would wipe out the motherboard. In fact any kind of wire that came close to any kind of wire or metallic object that was exposed to the outdoors good channel a strong electrical charge into the computer. It wouldn't even have to do physical damage. I mean to say there's a no visible physical damage. In some cases you may only see just a slight char or burn on a motherboard contact and that was it!
That is my best guess, using the information available. And yes, this has happened to me. In some cases it only burns out the device that was connected to the outdoors. For example if you had a modem, the modem would have been blown, but the motherboard survive. But it depends. Ideally, the telephone connection is supposed to have some type of lightning protection built into it. But you cannot depend upon it.
A new motherboard for that model goes for about $150. I would sure not pay that much money for a motherboard for a machine that old. Instead, you could buy a refurbished model that had everything in it and would have some kind of warranty. That way you would have a source of parts for future repairs. If you wanted to stick with that machine for some sentimental reason. Anyway, I doubt very much that the power supply took the brunt of the electrical storm. Power supplies generally have good way of protecting themselves. But they cannot protect the motherboard from discharges coming in through other things. Things like that telephone wires or network wires or anything else hooked up to the computer other than the power plug. The poser [lug is grounded and has a suger protector inside the PSU. Or should have.Almost all phone lines have a lightning arrestor installed on the line, but they are not designed to be fast acting enough to save electronic equipment.

I believe the original intent was to keep a house from BURNING down rather than protect a motherboard.

You have got to have a very fast acting surge protector, or preferably a UPS, for every computer.I just do not know what to do now.....as we initally spent about 1000 to have it built, but that was about 5 or so years ago.....I have a laptop for school, but would be nice to have the tower computer up also.

There was no connection to the outside during the storm, I have verizon for internet and it was not even on...as I stated before, I did unplug it as it was shutting down, then it would not start........I know enough to be dangerous!

Thank you all for your input!

So is 20 high or low for a power supply? The replacement power supply for that computer is a 400 W power supply and cost about $20. It just may be that the power supply failed for no good reason. It may be that there was a buildup of dust and moisture inside the power supply and it failed. But the same could be said about the computer, a buildup of dust and dirt inside the computer could also stop it from working. A simple thing to do is just to plug different things and see if you can get it to start up.
What I meant to say is unplugged about everything you could think of from the motherboard. But to put the front panel connector and the power supply connector back into the motherboard. Next then put the power cord back in and see if the computer will turn on. Remember, you have to hold the power button in for almost 4 seconds. Also, check to see if there is a auxiliary switch on the back of the power supply. This caused a lot of confusion. I never have been able to figure out which way is often on on those things. So I would go back and forth trying to observe a switch, then trying the front panel switch, then trying that's again. And so on. When it turns on you should see lights flash on the keyboard and possibly a light on the front panel of the computer. If the keyboard flashes, then it may mean that the motherboard is really okay and the problem is with some other component.
As you say, the computer was not hooked up to any external devices. So then that would rule out the possibility of electrical storm doing the damage. We shall just assume that it's a coincidence.
Sometimes just unplugging connectors and plugging them back in makes things work. A small amount of oxide can build upon the connectors inside a computer if it is been turned off for while. Just the action of removing the connector and putting it back in and making sure it's firmly SEATED may be enough to clean the oxide off the contacts. The oxide film is not usually visible to the eye. It should not be necessary to apply a solvent to the connectors, but if you wish to do so alcohol is a suitable solvent, but avoid applying it with a cotton swab. The cotton swab leaves fibers behind. The soft cloth is better. If there's an internal modem card in that machine remove it...and buy a better quality PSU...Thank you all for your input! I will check out these things and if I cannot get it figured out, then I will try a power supply.

thank you again and have a Merry Christmas!

Solve : Zippy EL-610 USB Keyboard?

Answer»

I bought a keyboard to play in the dark! Don't ASK - avid Trevian player !

The keyboard has been attached to the following:
HP Laptop Windows Vista
PC Windows XP Pro and PC Windows XP
and all have the same problem.

When using the keyboard, it lights up, but the characters are not mapped correctly.

If I type on the usual PC PS2 keyboard :

Harry Wordsworth the third.

and on the new Zippy I GET:

Harry W6rdsw6rth the th5rd.

The same thing happens on the Laptop and both PC's.

The manual - does not exist - but there is a reference on your web site and on Zippy.com to "USB only device, thus requires BIOS setting changes", but Zippy fail to say what actually requires changing.

In my BIOS for HP Laptop RUNNING Vista, I can find nothing that MENTIONS USB devices and in the PC BIOS again I can find nothing referring to USB or HID's.

On both the laptop and the PC's, all show two additional HID and two additional USB devices in the device manager.

HID-compliant consumer control device (Driver HIDserv.dll from Microsoft)
HID-compliant device

And two additional USB references:

USB Human Interface Device (X2) – Probably for the power off and sleep functions on the keyboard.

It all checks out, but what exactly do I do in BIOS vista or BIOS XP?

The PC XP pro is SP3.

Please Help.

Solve : New HDD, lower speed and long startup!!!pp?

Answer»

hi everyone

I have a HDD problem that raised when I bought anew hard!!!
I have bought brand new Maxtor SATA HDD 500 GB (MODEL: ST3500418AS). and replaced my old Maxtor IDE HDD, 40GB with the new one.
my main board is Asrock model: P4VM800 with two SATA port.
I have a 2.5 GHz Cpu and 1280 Mb ( acctualy a 1GB +256 MB on two slaves!!) of RAM.but when I run my xp windows it takes something about 4 or 5 time longer for windows to startup!!!
it also takes 9 min to copy a 1GB file from one drive to another and during the data TRANSFER my Cpu goes 100% usage!!
more interesting is that when my windows is starting up, before the "welcome screen " appear the monitor goes off for 15 second and again gets On!!!
these are some STRANGE events that happened after I changed my Hard drive.
can anyone solve my problem ??
this is driving me crazy!!

I bought this new hard drive because the older one was slow but this new is even worse!!

I can provide any other info if its necessary
thanx guysSATA or IDE ? ?

PS. There is no slaving with RAM.patio. He said he bought a sata drive to replase and ide drive. Second line after "hi everyone"

That is really perplexing. My guess would be that the sata drive is faulty. You may have just been very unlucky and got the one in the store that was bad.I may be barking up the wrong tree, but have you checked your profile SIZE? Are you copying from your desktop?Try re-installing your MBoard drivers...including SATA.

Solve : Upgrading a Macbook Pro.?

Answer»

Happy HOLIDAYS EVERYONE!

I received a Macbook PRO, as a gift this holiday season, and wanted to upgrade a few components of it.

I heard awhile back that the only hardware that will work in a mac is apple hardware. Is this true? Are there certain components that need to be apple and some that don't?

In that scenario above, which parts would I be able to replace with non apple hardware?

You can change the hard drive & RAM, but that's about it. It is hardware specific, like a PC laptop is. You can't just replace the VIDEO SCREEN or the motherboard with just anything. Same with a Mac.

Solve : Power Supply issue. Possibly.?

Answer»

Hi, I'm fairly new here, but I am in need of some assistance. So I just INSTALLED my new parts for my computer. (A ATI RADEON HD 4890 and a 750 watt psu)
It worked fined for about a day, then i went on for a few minutes, then my computer shut down. I tried TURNING it on again, but i didn't respond. I felt some HEAT, but very little coming from inside the case. I think my PSU may have over heated, but I'm not too sure.
I am running Windows Vista x64, and I have a HP m9402f with the added parts above. Please help me! Thanks a ton. And merry christmas / happy holidays.I don't think it is the PSU. But maybe the new video card.
Do this.
Remove power cord.
Remove, carefully, the new ATI card you put into the HP desktop.
Put it back to the original configuration, the the video it came with. Plug power cord back it and try again.
What happens if you do that?

Solve : comp not recognizing all ram?

Answer»

I'm having a problem with my machine not recognizing all my ram.

Presently I am running 2, 2GB sticks of Kingston PC5300, for a total of 4gb. My BIOS recognized 2 sticks with a total of 4gb AVAILABLE memory. Windows and CPUZ recognizes only 2.75gb of usable memory.

My motherboard is capable of running up to 16gb of DDR2, so I know it's not that.

I WAS running Windows XP, so I had expected there to be some misinformation REGARDING my RAM; however I'm now running Windows 7 with the same result.

I had the same thing happen on my old motherboard, so I know it's not the board.

And I've used other sticks of ram and it's the same thing.

ive just upgraded my RAM by installing 1gb. i already had 512mb installed ASWELL. when i installed the 1bg it only read 1 bg, not 1bg and 512mb. why is this?you probably had to remove the old RAM (probably 2 256 STICKS) to get the new RAM in.oh okay.. so are you saying that when i put in the 1gb stick in the computer, i had to remove the 512mb stick then put it in again so that the computer reads both sticks? What's the make/model of the motherboard? It MAY only recognize a maximum of 1 GB.Motherboard manufacturer's name: ECS RC415ST-HM
Did you look in CMOS to see if ALL ram is recognized by the motherboard? If the new RAM is high density and the old RAM is low density it will cause the computer to only recognize the high density (I think). Is the new RAM PC3200 ? ?

If not it will not work.....

Solve : DVD Drive is RAW?????

Answer»
I Have a HP DVD-RW Lightscribe drive, but it has stopped recognizing blank discs. The File system is RAW and reads blank DVD's as full, no space on disk.

Any help???

P.S. I know i posted this a while ago and said i'd found a solution but i was mistaken. I'd say, you need a new drive.reddevilggg, While Broni may well be right if you have access to another compatible computer/dvd computer you can eliminate the POSSIBILITY that it might not be dead by temporarily installing it there and trying it to see the result.truenorthGood idea After a lot of research I am coming to the conclusion that this problem has happened alot and no-body has got a perfect theory on how to correct this. (this could be taken as a challenge, by the way).

But what I am understanding so far is that the drivers for the DVD Writer are corrupt. I can not find a driver download (yes, I've checked the HP site) for the 1040i and if the drive does not read disks, how can i perform a recovery?

problems, problems??

There are a few more time-consuming things i can try. I have got access to another computer and I can also back things up to an old hard drive (not really old) so I can not lose data, but this is my primary PC and i love and its not working arrgh.

So... I take it you've tried the drive in another PC?Optical drives haven't needed drivers since WimME so you're barking up the wrong tree...

Test the drive in another working machine as BC said.Patio, What! i don't COUNT? truenorth
ok, will do and I'll be back with results, my SECOND dvd-rom/cd-rw is now the same. Both do not WORK, one is HP and other is Sony, both did work up untill about 2 weeks ago???beginning to sound more like a computer or software issue than the hardware optical drives.truenorth
Well, I decieded to do a clean recovery, re-install and now the drives work fine. They still read as 'RAW' file format and the disk's still show up as used when they are blank, but hey, it works??So if i understand correctly even though the discs are being described incorrectly you can still use them to read and write? If so then of course some glitch still remains and it may only be a matter of time until the problem or some other issue may arise. However as i mentioned earlier the problem generating what was happening and what is now happening would appear to be software related or something associated with settings somewhere on your computer. Have you tried using a DIFFERENT DVD burning software to see what happens? However i guess the good news is you don't have to rush out and buy replacement optical drives.truenorth
P.S. I may be wrong but i get the feeling you did not try either drive in another computer. Had you done so it would have isolated the problem to the current one if they had worked without issues in the other.
What i did try is, I put the blank discs in another computer (which i have had for a couple of years, it has not been connected to the internet). The disk format (in the optical drive properties) was still RAW. Although i did not try the original optical drive in this machine, this still confused me. How could it be a software problem if this happened to a machine that hasn't even been switched on in 2 years???

I have scoured the internet and only found people how have had the same problem, but have not found a solution.

I should of really tryed the drive in my other machine but time is not on my side at the moment and this would take a while! Maybe i will sonn, just to get to the bottom of this. Even though the drive works, it is still bugging me as to why this is happening.

Solve : Desktop - PSU & HDD trouble?

Answer»

I have been given a DESKTOP that “doesn’t work anymore”. The computer had been showing a message on a "black screen" to the effect that a file was destroyed or missing. The computer never made it to the desktop. What was attempted to fix the problem was to shutdown and restart the computer multiple times. Then the computer would not start anymore. There isn’t much info to go on but I do know it was running XP and has an Intel Celeron processor.

I am thinking this machine has couple of problems the first is the PSU. I checked the voltages at the 20 pin ATX connector and got the following:

+3.3v = 0v
+5v = +1.2
+12v = +0.9v

These voltages seem a little on the weak side.

The other problem would be the harddrive not booting to the desktop and giving a destroyed or missing file message. The HDD in question is a WD800JB caviar SE and is connected via IDE cable. I would like to connect the suspect HDD to my computer (HDD is connected via SATA) to test it but I am not sure how to do this with a SATA and IDE HDD and which tests would need to be run.

Quote

These voltages seem a little on the weak side.

Almost on the nonexistent side. TRY another PSU and see what happens. The voltages are not valid if the thing is not running.
You should be able to remove all power from the hard drive, And remove the IDE cable too. Now try the power on button.

At this point you MAY get a screen.

If not, power down fully. Now remove data and power from both floppy and CD ROM drive. (We are thinking a drive may be bad.)
Put power on again

Notice is the keyboard lights come on.

Expect three lights to come on, then off at power on. Then maybe on more time. And last just the Num lock comes on.

If you get that far, HIT the Caps lock. If you can toggle the Caps lock, the PC is more than 90 per cent good.

So how far do you get with no drives connected?

BTW, just how old is the machine?
OKAY I don't get it. Before we went out of town for Christmas the computer would not power up and now it does with all drives connected and powered. I do see the screen with the corrupt file now and it is:

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM

I do not see the lights on the keyboard light up and the machine was new in 2005.

Solve : Stripping/replacing DB15 connector?

Answer»

First off, to help explain the connector I have, ive included a picture of the DB15 and the other end which connects into a circuit board. Its not DB15 to DB15 (which would make me happy). The connector that plugs into my video card is so sensitve and used to the point that my LCD displays the IMAGE on the screen but in a green haze. If i push the cable into the connector, it goes to a normal color but if I let go, it goes back to green. I was wondering if there was a WAY to strip the connector and perhaps put a new one on it, considering the cable only displays SIGNAL and doesnt generate it. Id really love to use it alongside my brand new 22" widescreen I got.

[Saving space, attachment deleted by admin]It can be done, but it's not always easy. I've made several nonstandard cables for connecting test equipment to computers, mostly using DB9 connectors.

Ideally, you should have a pin to pin diagram for the cable. Hopefully you can GET this from the manufacturers web site. If you can't find a cable diagram, you will need to take apart the old connector to check what wire goes to what pin. With some sealed connectors that's difficult to do.

Ready to solder connectors can be FOUND at stores like Radio Shack.

Frankly, unless a new cable is really expensive, I'd just buy a new cable.

Also, how do you know it is the connector on the cable and not the connector on the video card?It appears the problem is how the things seats. Rather that replacing the connector just make an extension. Or buy and extension.
http://www.dcables.net/Premium-VGA-Extension-Cable-6-Feet.aspx
About ten dollars, or less. What is your time worth?
I could easily buy one, lol. I just was looking for quick fixes other than buying new cabling to connect to it. Since u mentioned the connector on the video card, ill use the vga port on my new lcd to test that theory.Tested the card, its working just fine so its definitely the cabling. I contacted KDS (mfr of the monitor) to see if they could sell the vga cable I need. Will keep you posted on whats up. Thanks again.

Solve : Hard drive problem - power cut caused??

Answer»

Hello,

This is my first thread as im new to this site and have come accross the first problem that i have not been able to resolve myself.

My system is a Hp, with AMD PHENOM 8550 triple core proccesor 2.20ghz, 4gb memory, windows 7 ultimate 64 bit, with 2 x 500 g hard drives.

The problem was the power went off for a while whilst the computer was on, and i started it up once power back, only to get a message, DISK BOOT FAILURE ENTER SYSTEM DISK, having no discs or whatever there was nothing i could do, tried entering recovery when booting up initially but nothing

As i am using windows 7, i put in the disk to reinstall, and it could only find my other hard drive that i keep music and films on etc, so i thought id do that, and installed it on there, after installation of w7, it booted up with 27 installed on the other drive, gone into my computer and the other one is no were to be seen.

just to ADD i have gone into bios to see if it was there but not, i have stipped side of the comp out and took the working drive out and just left old one in, and turned comp on, i could hear it working inside BUTAS i say only getting to the disk boot failure black screen.

i trued swapping the leads that were in working drive to old one.

hope this explains it better i hope u can help me

Remove all HDD's except the ORIGINAL 7 boot drive...
Boot to the Win7 CD and do a repair install.i have tried that once selected repair, it comes up with screen which shows no drives to do it on, i try scan , but to no availTry replacing the data cable to the offending drive...use a brand new one.but the other working drive, i used there CABLES and nothingTry it...

Solve : Raid questions?

Answer»

I have delt with hardware raid before, but at home I am having to LOOK into software raid which I have no experience with. I will start with that using some CREATIVITY I have READ you can setup raid 5 software through XP pro. If I setup a software raid 5 in a 4 bay USB enclosure can I move it between COMPUTERS or is the array information stored on the computer? If it is stored on the computer then despite my raid array if the OS drive failes then my raid array WOULD all be lost?

They are 2 different CPU's.
That is what I thought but did not want to leave out any options. Can you think of any others? As of now, there are 4 other Core i5s besides the 750.. There's the 650, 660, 661, and 670.... Whether you can actually buy them at this time, I don't know.

see chart

edit:
Quote
75 % end up rated at high speeds and 25 % (approx) are rated at lower speeds.

I'd like to clarify this a little.. When a manufacturer initially makes any CPU, the process is not perfected. As they build more and more of any particular CHIP, the process gets better, and the "yield" (from the WAFER) of higher-rated CPUs goes up. The "75%" yield of faster chips is an approximation by Scott Mueller..The fact is that no one knows what the yield truly is except for the manufacturer. If other manufacturers knew what the yields were for other manufacturers, they could advance in the market in some fashion. At this point, the I5/i7s may not have yield as high as 75%

Interesting.

That is true and that is why I said, "publicly available." Also those CPUs are all dual core with hypertreading so I am still wondering what is happening with the "lower speed" i5-750s? According to CPU-Z my CPU is revision B1. I will look that up to see if anyone else has had any luck OCing them.Quote

I didn't realize those were dual cores...sorry Perhaps Intel isn't far along enough yet to remark there faster CPUs...after all the i5 was just released.. Maybe we'll see the faster one's remarked later on, when the sales drop and they aren't selling as many...

Solve : can't transfer large files to USB flash drive?

Answer»

Hi, this post is on behalf of my father and his PC. His specs are: AMD Athlon X2 7750, Gigabyte MA770-UD3, 4GB G. Skill DDR2, ASUS GeForce 9600GSO, and a bunch of hard drives--both INTERNAL and external (C: DRIVE is a 250GB Western Digital). The computer runs XP Home SP3.

The problem is that we can't transfer large files from the computer to his 16GB Kingston DataTraveller. The problem seems to be limited to his computer, because he took both the 16GB as well as ANOTHER 4GB flash drive to Futureshop, where they let him test the USB keys there. He had put the large files on the 4GB at home, and was able to connect both USB keys on a computer at Futureshop, and transfer the large files from the 4GB to the 16GB there. He can't recall whether he transferred the files from the 4GB to the hard drive and from the hard drive to the 16GB, or from the 4GB directly to the 16GB, but regardless he is unable to do either on his computer.

We don't know the exact limits, though we were able to transfer a folder of ~24MB onto the 16GB, but individual files of ~55MB and up did not transfer. On the other hand, I was able to copy 3 folders consisting of a total of ~90MB from the 16GB to the DESKTOP without any problems.

** all of the transfers we attempted were copy+paste
When we attempted the copies, the dialogue box would pop up saying that the transfer was in progress, and the progress bar with the green blocks would show one or two blocks, and it would give a time estimate. However, the progress bar never progressed and the time estimate would either freeze or increase indefinitely.

I've tried searching for answers, and have come back empty handed. Any suggestions as to what the problem and solution might be would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks so much for your timeCan he transfer those bigger files within his computer?
Also, see, if Teracopy will work: http://www.codesector.com/teracopy.phpUSB 1.0 or 2.0?

Solve : Help with my Computer...?

Answer»

My Computer has been working but since i noticed that it is so friggin slow i realized that i should clean it off a bit.. so i unplugged all the plugs out of the back of the CPU i opened it up then i brushed it all up just to clear all those dusts.. anyway i also pull out the ram card so i can brush it too.. and after that i put it back the way it was before and i said to my self "everything seems to be in order" and then i put it all back TOGETHER plugged all the cords in the back and tested it all out to SEE if my computer would be faster with everything that I've done. As i TURNED it on it lit up, but i cant see anything in my monitor it just black but it has a power my CPU has blinking lights on and I'm thinking of that it may be just in the monitor so i wait for it until it stops blinking i pressed the capslock and see if my keyboard is working with it but i get nothing.. DID I do something wrong PLEASE help me..

and also to help you with your answers i touched the ram card's gold thingy that CONNECTS it to the ram slot.. is that bad? some people say that it shouldn't be touched because of the oil in the fingers could have some effects on it..Of course you should never touch the business end of ram or any pc board. While it's possible there was some static electricity and you shorted out something, it's more likely you simply knocked something loose or didn't connect the video cable correctly. Open the case and make sure all cards are properly seated and all connections are solid. Then make sure you connect the display correctly. In the future, you don't touch anything inside the case to get rid of dust - you use compressed air and blow it out.any beep codes to be more accurate. reseat RAM but also clean DIMM. dust might found itself in there when you cleaned the system board.ok, thanks for the help i'm pretty sure that this will taught me a very significant part of my life hahaha..I think you pooped the AGP card out of is slot.
That is the one the monitor goes to.Quote from: lordvcad on December 28, 2009, 05:51:34 PM

Solve : Graphic Card (Want to know so I don't buy the wrong one).?

Answer»

Hello my name is Jesper.
Now since I'm using this computer for gaming and I have had it for 3-4 years it is getting pretty outdated, so I decided to put in some more RAM and a new graphic card (the other parts of it is good enough for the games I PLAY)
The problem comes to the PCI-bus part.
The graphic card that I have been thinking about buying needs PCI-Express.
Now I am not sure if I have it or not.
I have windows vista 32 bit (Yes I know that is not good for gaming but sadly I don't want to spend too many money on CHANGING to something else than Intel premium D)
I have a Nvidia Geforce 7300 LE right now.
I figured it would be easy to figure out but I was troubled.
Under "DEVICE Manager" it says "PCI-bus" but then it said "Intel(R) 945G/GZ/p/PL PCI Express Root Port - 2771) and then also Intel(R) 82801G (ICH7 Family) PCI Express-root port - 27D0)

So all in all I would like to know if my pc can use graphic cards that need PCI-Express.

Thanks for reading this.
Also PLEASE tell me if you need more info. What motherboard do you have ? ?you old card is a PCI-Express and I assume it works in your computer, so the new card you want to buy will fit into your motherboard

Solve : My motherboard is creating LAN problems.?

Answer»

hi everyone,

I repeatedly having problems with motherboard LAN.

I purchased intel motherboard 2 months ago. Only 5 days after purchasing the LAN port of motherboard started CREATING problems. in every 2 hours, the LAN stops working and displays "A network cable unplugged". First, I thought it is a Internet providers problem. the internet guy checked every connection in their office and was confused.

He came with a laptop to my home and checked. the internet was working fine on his laptop. He told that there is some problem with my LAN port.

I realised, when LAN disconnects. I switch off my computer for 5 minutes and when I restarts the LAN starts working.

after 20 days, the motherboard stopped working. I replaced it with intel since it was in warranty PERIOD. they gave me ANOTHER motherboard. but now after 20 days of replacement, the LAN port is again creating the same problem.

I am confused, if there is something wrong in my computer now. because intel has replaced the defective motherboard and again I am facing the same problem

anyone know what is really the problem?

my motherboard is Intel DG41TY

RAM - 1.5 gb.

Processor - 7400 series intel core 2 duo(2.8 ghz).

one SATA hard disk and one SATA DVD writer.

thanks in advance.No. Call them again and explain that if this continues hey need to send you a pay check for doing their Quality Control work!

The fact that you can 'fix' the problem by turning off the computer is fair prof taht it is not just a loose cable. It is the motherboard chip set that is failing. Rather than install something to patch up the problem.Yyou want another motherboard. The chip set controls more that just the LAN. It may cause more trouble later. Intel made the decision to integrate lots of things into fewer chips. So they have to pay for their DESIGN or production errors, not the consumer.Appears to be a common problem for that motherboard. In the LINKS below "passelin" and "Rajiv Doolub" working together appear to have solved problem for "passelin".

Solve : Troubleshooting a laptop video problem?

Answer»

This wasn't my laptop so I don't know how, when, the problem started. (found used at resale shop) The laptop would occasionally make it to the login page but not consistently. I have lots of colored vertical and horizontal colored bars, very colorful. I first thought it had to be a driver problem so I used safe mode to bypass the DRIVERS but that didn't clear things up. Is there any way to determine if the problem is with the LITTLE plug in video card or the inverter? The first item seems almost impossible to find. It should be a really nice laptop if I can get beyond the video problem. Have you done your research and re-installed the video drivers for this machine ? ?
I have the drivers (downloaded them) but since I can't really see anything, even in safe mode, it is impossible to load them.If it looks the same in safemode chances are the vid CHIP is going South.its a portable. does is have a video out port. you could TRY a good monitor to ISOLATE issue if its a video chip or the lcd.

Solve : Nic card goes out then after restart works fine until it goes out again?

Answer»

OK, so I upgraded to Win 7 and then started noticing that my NIC card goes out .. it will not read any wireless networks until i restart my computer. I was on the phone with Dell for 2hrs updating my drivers.. it still happens. I've noticed it more when I play World of Warcraft then anyother time I can be on it for 20 to 30 min and then it just goes out. I want to verify that its not my NIC or a virus before I determine that its a prob with WOW.

Inspiron 1420 is a laptop.Open the properties for the NIC and look for the power managment settings. See if its set to let the operating system shut down the NIC to save power.

Solve : 1 Year Old Harddrive Wiped??

Answer»

1 year ago i brought a SATA samsung 1TB harddrive and installed it sucessfuly and formatted it however after being away for 2 days and coming back it no longer appears in windows. it spins up, the bios recognizes it but using windows i cannot find the disk. however a 8mb unasignable and a uninitialized partion showed up. however after unplugging one of my other harddrives and trying a different SATA lead and port on the mother board the harddrive shows up again but says the entire harddrive is UNALLOCATED and looks as ready as it did out of the box.
is all of my data LOST on the drive?

i'm running windows XP professional SP3
AMD 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4800+ (2.51GHz)
2GB of ram

the operating system is on a seperate hitachi 250 GB harddrive

if anyother information is needed please say.
thanks Your post indicates you have the same problem with two drives. Both SATA.
Positive areas of INTEREST:
A software update that altered the SATA drivers.
Partial failure in the PSU.
Some kind of Malware.
Last, but not least;
- component failure on motherboard, e.g.m faulty capacitor.

Now of the above are likely, so here come the questions about did you move the computer, was there an electrical storm, did mice GET into the PC case?

Best guess is your CD/DVD drive is failing and it CONTAMINATES the power supply lines. Excessive current, and high electrical noise. That is a very wild guess, but statistically, CD/DVD drives fail more often. Easy test is to remove all cables to the CD/DVD.
DO NOT TRY TO REFORMAT THE DRIVE!

This will only cause pain and suffering.

Try this program here to find and recover lost partitions

http://www.partition-recovery.com/

Hope this helps

KurtisKurtiskain: Do you need to "purchase" the linked program to actually "recover" the data?I dont remember having to.

There are other alternatives out there though

Solve : Cross FireX comatibility?

Answer»

Recently I bought a Biostar TA790GX 128M motherboard, just as a substitute for the one that broke. Since it was an old 939 socket board, I had to buy this one with an appropriate AMD CPU. So, only when I started to assamble my box, I figured out that there is no word about using regular videocards in the manual.
Does ANYBODY know if I can install my regular Chaintech NVidia 512MB PCI-E videocard on it?
Thanks in advanceI'm confused.....
But that part is easy.

That MBoard supports crossfire so you can run it ...or not run it.
The board won't care if you run 1 card or 2...Hi Patio.
Thanks for your response. That's what I was actually wondering about. I don't want to use it's 2 card capability. I just want to use my old Vcard using just one of it's slots.
Since you already took a look at that mboard's specs, could you by any chance help me with front panel AUDIO connections too? I just noticed that I have questions about it too. In it's manual, under "JAUDIOF1: Front Panel Audio Header" section, I FOUND "...AC'97 connector is not acceptable". Where I should connect my front panel speaker and microphone wires? There is a DLoad LINK for the MBoard manual at the manuf. website...

Solve : Ethernet Controller Not Working?

Answer»

I just setup my Asus P5QC motherboard with Windows XP Home SP3. Everything works except I can't GET an internet connection. Something's wrong with the Ethernet controller. I installed the software and drivers using the CD. I reinstalled both. I tried the latest version of the driver. The led's on the back of the Ethernet Controller work. Running ipconfig from a command prompt returns a blank connection-specific dns suffix and a blank default gateway. autoconfiguration ip address and subnet mask information is populated. I had Windows try to fix the connection itself with no luck. This was under control panel, Network Connections, Support Tab, then Repair button. Cable and modem are good, I tested them on my laptop. Under device manager, no errors are listed. There's nothing in Bios that could turn the Ethernet Controller on and off. Online tech support says I have a bad motherboard and I should RMA the board. They say it's bad because there's no ip address, but there is an ip address.

A guy at work SAID he had similar problems with an ASUS motherboard and it was the drivers causing the problem. You have to boot in Safe Mode and force it to choose different drivers.

I really don't want to uninstall everything and wait 2 weeks for a new board. I have an old IDE Ethernet controller laying around that I could use.

Is there anything else I can try? Whatever you tried already, skip it....

Turn off computer. Disconnect router, and modem from power source for 30 seconds.
Power them back on.
Restart computer.

If that doesn't work, bypass router, and connect computer straight to the modem.

If that doesn't work...
Go Start>Run (Start search in Vista), type in:
cmd
Click OK (in Vista, while holding CTRL, and SHIFT, press Enter).

In Command Prompt window, type in following commands, and hit Enter after each one:
ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /registerdns
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew

Restart computer.

If that doesn't work...
Go Start>Run (Start search in Vista), type in:
cmd
Click OK (in Vista, while holding CTRL, and SHIFT, press Enter).

At Command Prompt, type in:
netsh int ip reset reset.log
Hit Enter.
Type in:
netsh winsock reset catalog
Hit Enter.

Restart computer.

If that doesn't work...
Download, install, and run WinSockFix: http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Network-Tweak/WinSockFix.shtml
Restart computer, and check again.I just now got around to working on this again. Just moved houses. Anyway, I tried your ideas, nothing worked. I reinstalled windows from scratch, without installing the motherboards drivers, then installed a IDE card. It didn't work. I reinstalled all the motherboards drivers, then tried both the onboard controller and the IDE card. Nothing worked. I tried the latest drivers and nothing worked.

Do you thinking updating the bios would help? What about removing the battery which would reset the CMOS and start over? I'm out of ideas. I doubt I could RMA the board being so late.Maybe, you need new network card??Did you try the old NIC - do you know it works / is the ethernet controller enabled in the BIOS?

Alan <>< With cards being around 15 Bucks i wouldn't waste time RMA'ing the board and be without a system...Quote from: patio on December 25, 2009, 03:12:18 PM

With cards being around 15 Bucks i wouldn't waste time RMA'ing the board and be without a system...
I would RMA it.
He said he tried an IDE card and it didn't work.
The motherboard is not being nice.He hasn't tried the card as of yet...It's enabled in bios.

I tried an old IDE card that I know worked and a BRAND new one, D-Link and LinkSys. Nothing out of both of them. So it's not just the onboard chip, it's something with the system. What on-board chip are you referring to?This is a brand-new motherboard. -- Right?
Send it back to the maker or vendor.
It has a defect.
Trust me."What on-board chip are you referring to?" The Ethernet chip or whatever controls it. It has onboard Ethernet.

"This is a brand-new motherboard. -- Right?" It's 8 months old, I just never got around to setting it up.

If I could get just a regular card working, I'd be happy. I don't know why it won't work either. It must be something related.Quote from: Geek-9pm on December 25, 2009, 06:26:22 PM
Trust me.
Trust, but VERIFY...

timrob: You're all over the place. Pick one configuration and stay with it until you've proven it doesn't work. Keep it simple. Use the "ping" command and pick a "local" node to test against (laptop or home router?). Manually set the TCP/IP configuration parameters of your network connection (IP address, subnet mask) to be compatible with your test node. Then "ping" it. But "disable" any software firewalls first. From a command prompt window:

a. ping 127.0.0.1
b. ping ; e.g. 192.168.1.4
c. ping ; e.g. 192.168.1.3

Then attempt to "ping" from test node computer back to the problem computer.

You should use "cross-over" ethernet cable for computer to computer connection. A "straight-through" ethernet cable for computer to LAN switch port of home router.

I'd delete all the existing network connections, pull the add-in ethernet cards out and go with the built-in one. Reboot and establish a new LAN connection. Not sure whether you'd have problem with old drivers lying around. If that doesn't work, I guess I'd go with one of the newer NIC cards. Check for resource conflicts (IRQs).Quote

Verified.
Board has a history of bad defects.

(I do not mean a lot of defects, but a fatal few. Infant mortality.)
I found the boards Ethernet Utility. It didn't tell me anything I didn't know.

Anybody want to buy a barely used board, cheap?

BIOS beep codes.......

Alan <>< Yes but i only have one memory stick, it is a 1gb stick and i have TRIED it in different slots and still the same error beep codes. What is the motherboard?
if you have 2 or 3 slots some motherboards will work all right,
but if you have 4 slots they must be paired, one each in either first and third or one each in the First and second, often the nearest pair to the CPU as a rull.
the motherboard manufacturer and spec name NUMBERS would help us a lot.Quote

Solve : RAM upgrade??

Answer»

im runing windows XP pro with 256mb ram i would like to upgrade it to 512 will this increase my start up speed aswell?Yes.

But what would really increase your start up TIME is not having programs start up with Windows..i kno i ALREADY have it set up like that but its still slow the programs that start up with windows now are spysweeper, norton antivirus, skype, and my VIDEO driverA RAM upgrade will help STARTUP time, and overall speed.
Running XP with 256Mb of RAM is, whilst not painful, not exactly great.Disabling unneeded services will speed things up too.

Printing out the list makes it a lot easier.

Solve : want to upgrade my old laptop?

Answer» HI all,
I was wondering if i can put AMD (pentium 3 equivilent) processor in my Toshiba Satellite 330 laptop? any help would be appreciated.
Thank you all in advance.Basically with laptops you are STUCK with WHATEVER CPU it shipped with...they are soldered to the MBoard. You may be able to upgrade, but don't count on it.
It's not recommended you try it, as because of heat and socket problems you will not be able to upgrade far, so the performance gain would be slight. If you push hard enough.Quote
Quote
If you push hard enough.
LOL !
To the OP...you have a Pentium I 266MHz machine.
You cannot put ANOTHER manufacturer's CPU in there.
Different socket, different everything.

This is an old lappy. Not worth throwing money at it.
If you found some inexpensive used memory of the correct size/type, that would improve performance some, I suppose.

Solve : HP Businessjet 2200 Expired Print Cartridge error?

Answer»

I'm hoping that someone out there has run into this and can give me a WORK around to this problem. This printer has fairly new ink cartridges in it, runs test PRINTS just fine but will not print a document to save my life. The printer has not been used for several years and the cartridges were replaced SHORTLY before it was stored. The cartridges are most definitely expired (there is a BAR code and expiration date right on them) but I'm not REALLY prepared to toss them and get more as they are full and still good. Can any one help with this most frustrating situation (besides telling me to replace them)? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks, Blanche :-/

Solve : Tech advice?

Answer»

Hey guys I need some help

I have a some questions I need answers to, hopefully you guys can help me with this.

Let’s say when ever I do a fresh format on a hard drive that has too many viruses or male ware or just to fix a bug that one can't seem to get around.
After the format I can never seem to know how to go about reinstalling the drivers for the network card and audio drivers or video, is there a tool or a fast why to see what type of hardware, let’s say network card or video card, needs what version of drivers or company there from, so I can go about finding them off the internet is there a tool or a quick.

Also I can never seem to get the internet working after a format I try ipconfig /renew or just going into device manger to have windows install the drivers for the hardware that's installed, but that’s were am always getting stuck at, lets say I don't have the driver CD how do I go about finding driver version and information so I can find them on the internet or a tools that searches the internet for the drivers that the hardware needs any advice would be GREATLY appreciated.
What model PC are we talking about? Usually, the MANUFACTURER's site will supply most of the needed drivers for each model. If you'd like to get a very detailed report of all components in your system, download and run EVEREST Free Edition 2.20. That could be very helpful in finding drivers.Does Everest free edition need the internet to make a report because, the thing is whenever I do a format I can never get the internet back up and running with out the network drivers that's if am formatting a computer that I don't have any drivers too is there a way to get it up without with out having the drivers to the installed network card? No, it doesn't require an internet connection. If the network card is onboard, you can tell us the name of the mainboard and we can find the drivers for you?All your purchased hardware shouldcome with the software to make it work. If not then it is usually downloadable from the manufacturers website.

Alan <>< ale52 you make it sound so easy let's say you have to work on a computer that doesn’t come with drivers and is of a older model and you can't rely tell what type of video or audio card etc it is or if device manger rely doesn’t give out too much INFO to go on with that's why am looking for a good tool that will diagnose the type of hard ware in a system and model or type so I can go about finding the right drivers.Again, Everest Home...Quote

Unless this is a custom-built PC, the manufacturer's site will give you all of this information. For EXAMPLE, my computer is a Gateway GM5094E. If there's anything I need, I just head on over to the Gateway site and do a quick search for GM5094E and I'm present with a list of hardware specs as well as drivers.

And like has been suggested twice (and now three times), you can simply use Everest. It will tell you just about everything you need to know."male ware"....now there's a Freudian slip if i ever heard one.

Solve : Help Ethernet Problems?

Answer»

Hi Peeps,
I've bought 2 different ethernet cards both Realtek 8139 and installed it on 3 different pci slots on my Gigabyte Gn-700 motherboard and windows xp it recognises it k and the drivers install sweet but it tells me in control panel that its unplugged. I've uninstalled it and reinstalled it and still no joy.

Please help this dumb female in Leeds, Uk

ThanxCan you please give us some more information as to the maker of the computer and Operating system etc?
I am sorry but this motherboard is supplied mainly as a SERVER unit and details of its specification are for business users only, so i cannot help much without the specification.

As I understand you have fitted the card and installed the drivers, after that it should show in the control panel/ network connections/, if you right click over the ICON it should show "enable" or "disable", all you really should do is click on "enable" and that should be it. BUT!
are there any other network connections in the windows?
if so click on it and "disable" that other one then the "enable" should be cleared on the one you are TRYING to start.
sometimes if you have AOL installed it can make itself the only account connection.
It will show up unplugged until it is connected to a router or a modem...

Solve : Sound Card not working?

Answer»

I have had a series of problems with my PC (Windows XP wouldn't open) but I finally managed to install XP from my disk. I have Explorer 6 SP.1 and cannot update to SP 2 let alone Explorer 7 HOWEVER my main problem is that after reinstalling XP I find that my sound card isn't recognized (ie "No MIDI playback devices" and "No Audio Device". Before my problems began my sound card was working fine.

a) I am not sure of the name of the card

b) I can play a vinyl LP album and get perfect sound from the speakers attached to the PC.

c) the only sound card CD I have is for Soundblaster 16, though it may be left over from an earlier computer. Does Unimodem Half-Duplex Audio Device" sound like a Sound Card?

d) could the REINSTALL of XP have somehow resulted in my sound card not being recognized?
Do you have the MBoard driver CD that should have shipped with that machine ? ? You have onboard sound and that is where the drivers will be located.
Re-install them and you should be good to go.

If you don't have them DLoad and run Everest Home which will tell you each component that is in that machine. Then travel to the manuf. site for the proper drivers...

Why can you not update to SP2 ? ? Is this a LESS than legal XP installation ? ?

If so all bets are off.Does your Windows Device Manager show some yellow triangles with exclamation marks INSIDE them? Have you tried to install the driver for your sound card?

When you say "SP 2", do you mean Service Pack 2 for Windows XP? If so, why can't you install it?

How do you play a vinyl LP album on your computer?

Do you have an Internet connection? If so, I suggest you download EVEREST Free Edition 2.20 and generate a report on your system; it will tell you what sound card you have.
