Solve : No boot?

Answer»

Howdy, Q here.
I recently build myself an pc, but for some reason it ain't booting up. the led GOES on, all hardware runs, but i won't get any video signal or anything else. Everything looks good to me, so i have no idea what can be the problem.

Specs;

2 MATROX HDD's
2 DVD-roms
2 256MB RAM from Kingston
2 CPU's, an INTEL Pentium 3 with 600MHZ and an Intel Celeron with 3.4GHZ
An usual floppy drive
Simple keyboard and mouse

Anybody knows the problem? IM using on-board video, and using an external video card won't help either.

Thanks in advance,
Quatroking
2 CPU's ? ? ?

What kind of board is this ? ?

Solve : How to install a CD-Rom Drive?

Answer»

Hello, I'm a newbie, sure glad to find this site.
I want to replace my own CD-Rom DRIVE, but am concerned I will not have enough instructions with the hardware. How can I feel confident before I buy?You should have no trouble at all...there are only 2 connectors going to the REAR of the CDRom drive and they are designed to plug in only one way.
Take your time.
Remove all power sources before OPENING the case.
Take anti-static precautions.

for very good and easy instructions see here:-
http://www.dvworkshop.co.uk/Computer/Adding_Drives___Cards/CD_or_DVD_Drive/cd_or_dvd_drive.html
or
http://www.dooyoo.co.uk/cd-writers/lg-cdrw-8x4x32/297353/

there are only two connections "a 4 wire plug (called actually a molex plug)" this is curved at the top for inserting back in, and "an IDE wide flat cable" which will have either a black or red coloured edge which is the side the goes against the 4 pin plug. probbably four small phillips screws two on either side, remove them and replace them.
Make sure that the small jumper is set as SLAVE if it is on the same ide cable as the hard drive.Thanks to both uesquebeathus & Patio!
This should get the job done without a lot of confusion.
THANK you, Thank you, Thank you!You're Welcome...let us know. And stop by anytime !

Solve : Computer boots abnormally?

Answer»
STRANGE EXPERIANCE!

The computer is running on Windows XP and for that matter, it's running FINE. The problem only comes when booting it. The ON/OFF button switch on the front pannel works fine but the PC cannot pick up the video. The video will only APPEAR when I disconnect and reconnect the power cable at the back.

On the first switch on you will see that the fan is spinning and the fan light as well as the on button. The monitor will show orange LED indicating that there is no video.

Unplugging and replugging the power cable and then switching it on, on the power switch will rectify the problem.

A mother board was tested with everything connected to it and no errors were found.

A new power supply was tried but still could not solve the problem.

Another monitor was also tried but still nothing happening.

Any suggestion out there will be appreciated.

Thanking you in anticipation.
Zakes ..... It almost sounds as if there may be a LOOSE connection somewhere inside. Try shutting down , open up the case....... discharge any static BUILDUP in your body and the remove and then replace the front panel wiring at the mobo. Also check the 20(24) pin connector from the PSU to the Mobo to be sure its properly seated .
I know this sounds odd ....... but can you try plugging the pc into another wall recepticle.... ( use an extension chord)

Solve : Drives Not Powering Up?

Answer»

For some reason none of my drives (Hard Drives and an Optical Drive) are getting power. I have checked all molex connectors with a multimeter and all of them are fine, but still, the drives will not power on.

The only thing that I can remember changing before this happened was that my mom kept yanking my power cable so I would not get on my computer when she didn't want me too. That and one of my hard drives became totally corrupted.

I thought that my PSU had gone out but the machine still powers on and the molex's all CHECK out with a multimeter.

When I power my machine on all goes correctly. I get the Post Test Beep thing that SAYS everything is ok (1 short beep), but then, after the memory count, it freezes, and I cannot continue. I can't even get into the CMOS Setup.

System Specs are as follows:
AMD Sempron 3400+ (S754)
1GB (2x512) Kingston RAM
Gigabyte GA-K8VM800M Mobo
1x 8GB Western Digital HDD
1x 30GB Unknown Brand HDD
1x 40GB Maxtor HDD
1x BenQ Combo Drive

If any of you have any ideas as to why my drives won't power on please share them, all help is appreciated.

In you need any more info just let me know and I will be glad to get it for you.

Thanks again in advance.Unhook all but the primary drive and see what happens. How old is the CMOS battery? If that doesn't work unhook EVERYTHING except the RAM and video and see what happens.

What are the details about the power supply?Unplugging all but the Primary Master didn't work .

The CMOS battery isn't too old, just over a year.

Specs of PSU:
450W Max Output
+3.3 +5 +12
-3.3 -5 -12

Again, thanks for the help!

EDIT: I just unplugged the power from all drives and the Post Test no longer freezes after the memory count.Bump.I managed to figure the problem out. Turns out that the IDE Cable ATTACHED to the secondary CONTROLLER was bad. Just replaced it and now everything is working as it should.

Special thanks to Zylstra who helped me with this problem.

Solve : NEW here help with ram?

Answer»

i have an older GIGABYTE GA-8IEXW it takes PC 1600 and PC 2100 ram my QUESTION is this can i put PC 3200 in there (will the PC 3200 slow down to PC 2100) or am i stuck BYING ram i cant find easyly??PC stores have refunds, don't they? At least most of them. What I'd do is BUY the 3200 and TRY it. If it works, great! If not, then you can get a refund for the RAM.

Actually, I'd upgrade the motherboard and save the trouble, but that costs a little bit more. cant upgarade motherboard i use this board cuz it has 4 IDE's 1 and 2 are 33/66/ and 100 3 and 4 are 100/133 its a P 4 2.8 Northwood with currently 512 MB PC 2100 with a 10 GB system drive a JOBD made up of a 1243 and a 120 and then i have a 400 GB SATA 3.0Okay, then I'd buy the 3200 and hang on to that receipt for if it doesn't work*. I'm not finding any useful articles on the compatibility of your mobo.

*Make sure they accept refunds first!

Solve : pentium 3 1.0 GHz. not working?

Answer»

Here is my old computer:

Dell Dimension XPS R450 (1995-7?)
Pentium II 450 MHz. (Slot 1)
576 MB RAM
150 GB Hard Drive
220 Watt Power Supply
Windows XP Home Service Pack 2

I bought and installed a Pentium III 650 MHz. and it works but the BIOS recognizes it as a Pentium Pro 500 MHz. (but Windows SEES it as a Pentium 3 650). So when it worked I bought a Pentium 3 1.0 GHz. and installed it, it did not EVEN TURN on, only the heat sink fan was the only thing that turned on. The P2, P3 650, and the motherboard have FSB of 100 MHz. and the P3 1.0 GHz. runs at 133 MHz FSB and I wondered if there is some way to get it to work.

I BROUGHT the P3 1.0 GHz. to a friends house that has a P3 750 Slot 1 and tried it in there and it worked so I know that it works and I upgraded the BIOS of my old computer to BIOS A13 too. and that did not work.

Thanks!

Solve : Case Cooling Questions?

Answer»

Hey-

I've been looking at some ways of INSTALLING extra 120mm/80mm fans into the the new system I'm building. I wanted to know how you can mount extra fans onto cases or inside cases. Thanks for the help once again

MikeIf you have the case in mind that you have or gonna buy,[highlight] post a pic[/highlight] here and we can tell or help you where extra's might work / fit*.

It's not very difficult at all, though added noise level could be a factor to consider.
You also want to make sure your power supply has enough connectors.
Here is the case,

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811146025

(Should have other pictures of case with front door open, and side pictures)Btw, I've already bought the case.

(Very spacey,toolless design is awesome! )Firstly, what type cpu are you planning on running, will you have numerous hard drives setup inside ?

Couple reviews STATED pretty decent air-flow , might consider waiting to get everything up and going and monitoring your temps inside to see if the temps warrant modifying the case. I have done a little to (2) cases and UNLESS your a pro- it kinda takes away from the case unless your real good. (with that in mind and I'm guessing theres a 120mm upfront on the bottom sucking in)

* you could - add an 80mm on top more towards the front of the case and also , depending on your hard DRIVE reply, take out the bottom internal 3.5 (x3) bay and remove it.*[ looking into your case from the window door] place a 80mm all the way in the back on the right about 1 1/2 inches from the front of the case as an additional intake fan. You can get fan dampers & grills at newegg real cheap if you choose to go this way. Its very easy to do this and real easy to make your case look like crap too. *I* would get it all running and think about it awhile before getting the power tools out! CPU: P4 3.2 Ghz
As for the HDDs Right now I plan to master a 70 gig I have and then slave a 60 gig to it.

I'll deff wait to see how hott it runs, thanks for the input so far man.If you decide on 120mm fans, you might want to look into 80-120 adapters. Could save having to mod the case.

Solve : Help with boot power loss?

Answer»

Hi i was wondering if anyone COULD help a little. I just started building a new machine. With an asus sli mainboard. When i try and boot the machine the fans run but when the vidoe trys to initialize it shuts down. Ive tried in both pci-e slots. tried reseating the memory. Using one stick. CPU cooler is properly installed. new power supply. im at a loss help please
Asus P5nd2-sli mainboard
p4 3.4ghz
430 watt thermaltake
evga 7600gt 256meg video
1 gig 2 STICKS elixer 667 memoryI'm gonna jump in and see if I can't help you

Honestly, that 430W power supply only runs at 400W on average, 430 would be its peak performance. With the specs you gave it may seems your machine is eating all of its power; thus causing the shutdown.

Though, lets wait for a more experienced member to contribute and correct me if im wrong Did you remember to use Thermal COMPOUND when you installed the CPU ? ?

Solve : USB Autorun?

Answer»

I have an autorun file for my USB memory stick so it has a custom icon when plugged into the computer. Is there any autorun that forces the memory stick to be run on drive G so no matter what computer i plug it in, it will always be drive G instead of drive I or E or whatever.
Thanks for any replies.With the stick plugged in right click My Computer and select Manage....go to Disk Management.
Once there find the stick and right clik it and select Change drive letter and path...select edit and switch it to G:
It helps to give it a volume name as well it will show up the same in any machine.
Unless you put it in a machine that already has a G: then by default it will switch to the next available drive letter...GOOD advice, patio. I never really put much thought into this, but it might come in handy.

Carbon,
What exactly do you have that allows you to use a custom icon? I probably never would've thought of doing such a thing, but now I'm interested.I had to learn this method out of neccessity as at the time i had 3 machines and a benchtest machine in the shop...to make it more confusing 2 of those had multi-boot setups and multiple drives partitions etc.

On one of the machinel the last drive letter was M: just to give you an idea. So when swapping the stick from machine to machine inevitably brain farts would ensue ( with the OS's not me )

I chose R: knowing i wouldn;t see a situation even with virtual drives that any machine would go that high. Needless to say all OS versions were happy with this and i didn't have to wait for hiccups to do work.

The other thing i did find out in all of this is by giving the stick a volume name along with a permanent letter is Windows co-operated much better and picked it up right away in all machines.

Trial and error triumphs again...Quote

Good advice, patio. I never really put much thought into this, but it might come in handy.

Carbon,
What exactly do you have that allows you to use a custom icon? I probably never would've thought of doing such a thing, but now I'm interested.
I made an autorun.inf with the following code:

[autorun]
icon=icon.ico

I saved that autorun on the FIRST page of my memory stick and I put an icon in my memory stick as well. Unplug and replug and your memory divice would have a custom icon instead of the icon that looks like a drive or something (defult) This doesn't work with windows 2000 and below.Thanks, Carbon, I'll give that a try.

EDIT: Works like a charm. Never realized it would've been so simple.Yeah, I was looking at an autorun for my Halo CD and then i saw 'icon=icon.ico' or something so I did a few trial and erros and manged to get that. It's really nifty having my creepy mug pop up whenever I plug my iPod into SOMEONE's computer. By the way, HTML-Kit has a really handy site for making icons...

http://www.chami.com/html-kit/services/favicon/

A lot quicker than making your own. I'm trying to find a way to set up a custom wallpaper for a USB drive, but I'm having no luck.That would be cool to have a custom wallpaper for USB. I think I saw something about that a while back.....ill try and find it again.It would definitely be a nifty feature. Honestly, I can't even remember how to set a wallpaper for a folder on my computer. It was so simple on Windows 98, but I can't think of how to do it on XP. Of course, it's also 6:30 in the morning and I've been up packing all night and I have spent maybe five minutes trying to do this. Ha.I learned how to add a wallpaper background to a folder in Windows XP from the following link:
http://www.pcworld.com/article/id,105860-page,2-c,xp/article.htmlThanks for the link, Kip. I couldn't get it to work for me (I couldn't set it as a system file for some reason), but it eventually lead me to this...

http://www.winmatrix.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=10039

That program does it automatically. Now I can just edit the desktop.ini file as I please. Now we'll see if I can somehow figure out how to get more than one color of font for my icons like they are on my desktop (white with black border).

Solve : Power question.?

Answer»

As a few of might remember, I was having trouble with powering up an old eMachines W2247 (see here). I went ahead and hooked the HDD in another computer, BACKED everything up, and formatted the drive.

I then returned the HDD and replaced the eMachines PSU with one from another computer, thinking that would get the eMachines running again. However, even with this other PSU, I'm still getting the EXACT same booting problem as mentioned in my other thread. So...does anyone know what else might be wrong? Bad motherboard maybe?First thing to do is strip the system to only the mb/RAM/video / boot / does it POST / if so, then add the keyboard / repeat process until you have everything that is normally connected. It's a process of elimination. PITA...but necessary.

Good luck

Alan <>< The used PSU may have issues as well...

But i agree with Alan. <>Did you find anything new on this or is it time to buy another mobo that fits. This is a uBTX CONFIG and I can't find any mfg who makes them anymore. Gateway DROPPED them completely and support too. Looks like anthor door stop !
Suggestions please!
BillBA similar problem can be caused if the ram settings are set wrong, if you have reset the cmos / bios settings by the onboard jumper or remove then refit the small battery or replace it altogether, it will clear the wrong setting from the cmos/bios. if you have a voltmeter you could do a small check on the power supply unit, ther are four wires in the molex connector the yellow is 12v and the red is 5v the TWO black in between of course are the earth wires. try a boot up and when the fans run test the molex one on yellow one on black see if you are getting any power from the rails.In particular, on Emachines, I've seen the PSU take out the motherboard along with other components. What I usually do is replace BOTH the mobo & PSU.

Another thing you can try is to "bench" the motherboard. Take it out of the case and set it on something non-conductive. Hook up the power supply with only the RAM, video card & keyboard. You then have to 'short' the start pins in the mobo to get it to start.

Good luck

Solve : Bios shows floppy drive A & B but PC only sees A?

Answer»

I have a dual floppy drive in PC with an AOpen AX4SPE-UN MB,in a PC running Win98SE, it's the only PC I have that still has a 5.25 FD and I want to transfer the FLOPPIES to DVD, the Bios ALLOWS choosing A and B, but when I reboot after saving the Bios I only see the "A" drive in "My Computer", the drive is working OK, and both drives WORK, I can fool "B" to work by changing jumpers on the Teac 505 floppy drive but then I lose "A".

Thanks

BrandyIt probably sees only the "A" drive because of the twist in the cable. That twist helps the BIOS see the "A" and the "B" individually.

Alan <>< Whether you put the drive before or after the twist, it will always only see one drive. I don't know of any other way to "see" both drives in Windows unless they are separate drives, one before and one after the twist.

Bummer

Solve : No post at start up, Giving display beep code?

Answer»

What started as repairing a friends computer eventually turned into a complete overhaul.

Here is the story, He was playing eq2 ONE day, happy as a clam, and suddenly his comp died. After that, it just would not start up.
He broght it to me, and I replaced the psu, same issue, replaced the mobo, and nada.... after he THOUGHT about it, he decided that he wants to upgrade anyway, so asked me to get him new parts and build him a new system...

So, here is the list
Asus M2N32 sli am2 mobo
Amd Fx-62 cpu
2 gigs of ddr2 ram (a-bit, or a-byte or something, it was listed in the mobo manual as being compatable)
antec 900 gaming case (which has a mini tornado inside.... I mean wow lol)

At first I used his exisiting graphics card... Put it together and BAM same problem. The fans would twitch, but nothing powered up.... After I recovered from the head trauma of banging it against the wall, I took the graphics card out, and everything, started working... So I deduced that after all that, it turned out to be the graphics card. So I replaced with:

Nvidia 7950

NOW everything powers up, but no display, and the beep code gives me the 1 long, and 2 short beeps, which tells me that it can't display.

I have CHECKED, rechecked, reseated. I switched his graphics card with mine, to see if it was a defective card, and his works in my computer, but mine still had the same issue in his.
The only thing I didn't replace yet is the Hard drive.

Any SUGGESTIONS?Some motherboards hold beep codes even after the problem is fixed. One possible solution is to remove the battery, clearing the CMOS, then replacing it.Thanks for the response,

I used the jumpers to clear the cmos, but not sure if I did it right.
I have never cleared the cmos before, so here is what I did, I put the jumper from the pins, and put it on the 2 pins that was stated in the mobo manual, let it sit there for about 30 seconds, and replaced the jumper on the default pins. Then powered the system back up, with same issue however.

I didn't take the battery out however, would that do more than reset it, or is it the same principal, just different method?I'd remove the battery. I'm trying to find out if this is common with ASUS motherboards, but it doesn't appear to be. However, removing the battery might fix it as I've encountered this KIND of problem with my Gigabyte mobo.removed the battery, still same situation. You get absolutely no display at all?
Tried swapping monitors?
A hard drive really shouldn't cause such a problem but you should try leaving it disconnected on the boot up.The monitor is good, I use it on my exisiting system as a second monitor. And I have tried it with the hd disconnected with the same results.Strip the system of everything but the motherboard / video / RAM. Boot the system. Do you POST? If so, start adding one component at a time, starting with the keyboard, mouse, etc., until the system fails. Usually the last component installed is the culprit...though not always.

Alan <>< :-)hi had thats problem and i could hear it from the hard disk so i reconnected my hard disk and it works fine....

and after some time this same problem re appears..again...

i too dont know.. wat to do to really over come this.. i jus posted this problem can u give me a solution for this...chk my post and help me..man

Solve : Long beep on startup?

Answer»

I just finished upgrading my computer. When I tried to boot up all I got was a nonstop beep. I have tried reseating all of the POWER connecters and cables. I have reseated the video card, the cpu, and both sticks of ram. Thinking that I might have a power supply problem I BOUGHT a new power supply did not help.
Motherboard Asus P5N32-E
Ram CORSAIR PC-6400 2GB
MSI GTS8800 340MB
Intel DUO Core 2 E6600
Thermaltake Toughpower 750watt
Koolance PC2 case
Western Digital Raptor HD 37GB
Western Digital HD 200GB
Can you boot to the BIOS,or you just get beeps?I can not boot into bios. All I get is one long beep.Please explain "upgrade".
Is this a completely new computer or an existing computer with new components added.

If this is an Award BIOS I would suspect memory first.
Either incorrect, faulty, improperly populated or not seated.

Try one module at a time.

I am feeling real dumb right now. I made a real dumb mistake. I forgot to plug in the video card. After I plugged in the video card EVERYTHING is running GREAT. Thanks for the help. The GrayBear ...... LOL ....... I'm glad to hear you sorted out the issue.
Here's a tip for the next time you do something like that........ If you have any parts or pieces left over ....... check .... you may have forgotten something .

Solve : My PC is stuck in a loop?

Answer»

I turn on the PC, it comes up with a THING saying "this computer has been shut down incorrectly", so I choose the "startup normally" option. It has the loading SCREEN, but then goes black, says "no input signal" and goes back to the first screen. It does this for whatever option I choose. PLEASE help. I have tried shutting down the computer, and starting again, but no help.

I am no good at computers, so please show me how to fix this step by step, if possible.

ThanksIf you have a real Windows CD, boot to it and choose the repair option for Windows

Alan <>< i think the boot files have been deleted... the system does not know where to GO... once u start so just try to copy and paste the files... like NTDLR and ntdl.sys files or use a boot disk..

sure this will make it perfect..

Solve : Computer powers up but no signal to monitor?

Answer»

There is no signal to the monitor, it powers up and there is the initial beeping sound, cd drives, HDD and floppy appear to be functioning,and all lights and fans work fine. It doesnt boot up. I googled to try and solve the problem and have tried a process of elimination, so far I have:

1) Checked video card - I replaced with an old one which definately works and still no activity. I then thought it COULD be the AGP slot but when I put the original card back i removed the power connections for it and it started beeping, so I presume the slot is ok? Not sure though.

2) Made sure all cables were in correctly - yes

3) Removed CMOS battery and replaced - no difference

4) Memory - removed one stick - no difference, removed other stick - no difference.

4) Checked CPU - seemed to be seated in correctly but removed and replaced anyway, again no difference.

5) Monitor - monitor SCREEN works as it displays 'no signal' when it attempts to boot.

I'm stumped as to what to do next. It also doesn't bleep when the processor or a solitary RAM stick is removed, but, when the 6800GT's power cable are unattached it bleeps like crazy. Could this lack or warning beeps when important components removed be due to a duff motherboard?

Can anyone help?

Many thanks,

Andy

SYSTEM SPEC: Athlon 3000+ (OC to 3200+), Asus K9N Motherboard, 6800GT graphics card, 1gb ram, 160gb HD, 350w PSU.i had similar problem.. jus remove ur external graphics card and see.. i did the same and after reinstalling Xp and then adding my Graphics card.. it went fine...My wife's computer had a similar problem. I did all the stuff you did but still didn't work. What DID work for the moment was to unplug the PSU, then the system worked...until the next time we shut it down. I turned it off yesterday, removed the NIC, reseated everything. Then, i unscrewed the motherboard mounting screws, moved the mobo SLIGHTLY, then retightened the screws & rebooted. It's been fine since I did that.

Hope this will help

Solve : eMachines Power Supply or Motherboard problem?

Answer»

I was tinkering with my brother's PC, trying to take out his floppy drive because I needed one as mine doesn't have one. I did absolutely nothing with the power supply or anything, but for some reason the thing won't turn on. There's no indication of what's wrong with it; there's no light on the motherboard to indicate whether it's on or not, and the thing just doesn't turn on at all. So I don't know if the motherboard's fried, which I don't SEE how that could have happened, or if the power supply's busted, which I also can't see how that would have happened.

Is this common for eMachines? Is there something I could have unplugged and plugged in wrong? There are three wires from the button on the case that you push to turn the thing on, and they were connected to a part of the motherboard. However, I don't know where exactly they were positioned (although I do know what they were connected to), but no matter how I seem to connect them, nothing seems to help. Would this be part of the problem? Where can I find a diagram or something of the motherboard? This is the one that he has: http://parts.emachines.com/emachines/moreinfo.asp?product_id=69036

Any help would be appreciated, otherwise I have to buy him another PC. You need to get a manual ( did you keep the boxes & paperwork on that puter?) for that board, I was tinkering around and it's like

** the NO light on the motherboard would worry me a bit **
see my last comment at bottom.....

Have you tried contacting Emachine/ gateway tech support and see if you can get a manual of maybe go directly to the board manufacturer and check with them. Its gotta be pretty easy to fix this, maybe just the little led/power/ reset switches need to be connected to the right posts on the board. They can get confusing. I hope you had all the "power" disconnected from that mobo when you took out the floppy ?
Did you replace the floppy drive back into this machine ? ?There is the possibility that you might have 'touched' something inside, accidentally of course, and with enough ESD (Electro-Static Discharge) from your body, cooked the motherboard.

One thing you can try is to strip the system of everything but the motherboard / video / RAM. Boot the system. Do you POST? If so, start adding one component at a time, starting with the keyboard, mouse, etc., until the system fails. Usually the last component installed is the culprit...though not always.

Alan <>< :-)I talked to someone from eMachines and he gave me a pdf file manual. I looked at it and wired everything to what I'm sure is correct, but it still won't turn on. He told me the problem is the power supply so I'm going to have to look into getting that replaced. I did put the floppy drive back in there, but as I said, to no avail.

When I say there's no light on the motherboard, I don't mean that there is a light and it's not lighting up. I mean that I can't physically find a light on the motherboard and as far as I know there isn't one.I would recommend replacing the motherboard as well. I've seen MANY emachine SYSTEMS that when the power supply goes, it takes the motherboard as well.

Good luck

Solve : DVD failure?

After INSERTING a CD or DVD, the drive spins for a few seconds and then stops. When checking status of the device, windows says that it is working properly. Further, if the device is selected (clicked) in My Computer a screen message says there is not disc in player when there is a disc in the player.Do you have another drive you can SWAP it out with? Sounds LIKE the drive has gone south.

Alan <>< this is might be because of some disk failure.. your DVD might have some scratches.. making it not readable.. so trying ur disk with another drive or ur friends...And to make SURE it isn't the drive that has FAILED swap it into a known working machine...if it does the same thing it's time for a new one.

Solve : Can any body help for CD-ROM Issue?

Answer»

Hello,

Please read by patience as this is little large.
I have 3 partitions(C, D, E) of my 80 GB hard disk. First two partitions are of FAT32 and third one is with NTFS & of larger size than 32 GB.
On C partition I have windows XP install. There is some cd-rom registry issue, so I want to format the C partition and reinstall the XP.
As my cd-rom is not working so I run the XP setup from my D partition where I copied the complete XP folder.
Here I dont get the option to format the C partition.

So my main issue is that my cd-rom has incomplete or corrupted registry ENTRY, for that I want to format the c drive and reinstall the window. Will this solve my issue. If yes then suggest me how to format the system/basic partition.
If not then please tell me what should I do in ORDER to fix the cd-rom issue.
I tried reinstalling XP without format but that didn't work. I also try to delete lower/upper filters for cd-rom in registry but these entrie are not there. In device manager I am getting the the following error "this device cannot start. {code 10}
Also entry in device manager seems to be wrong like below
"SAMSUNG CDmROM`SC-q5rG'. This also keep on changing when I do "scan for changes".

My cd-rom working FINE in other's COMPUTER and other cd-rom working fine with my computer even.
I am very very thankful to you as you read all these. Please suggest something, if you can.

Best Regards

Solve : Having Power / Boot Issues?

Answer»

I have an eMachines T3304 Desktop I bought brand new in Feb. 2006. At first, I was having problems getting it to come on. Sometimes I would have to restart it with the POWER button like 10 times before it would ever come on. Sometimes I would have to unplug it for 5-10 MINS & then it would come on. 2 days ago I went to turn it on & the blue power button light come's on & stays on, & the fans are running, but nothing at all on the monitor. The little amber light under the power button isn't coming on, or flickering like it usually does. Today, I pulled off the casing, & all fans are working & no obvious loose or burnt wires or connections. A friend has a similar eMachines that runs fine, so I took mine over there. I swapped the Power Supply, Hard Disk, Video Card/Expansion Card, still nothing. I disconnected all hardware & peripherals, reinstalled one at a time checking each time to see if it helped, & still nothing. I'm STARTING to think it's the Mother Board. Does anyone know anything else I might could try ? Is there something on the Mother Board I could check, or something else somewhere in the computer ? Any Help would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks ! Reading your post, I'm starting to agree with you, for several reasons:

1) You've tried everything else that could conceivably cause this issue

2) Failing motherboards can do that.

3) eMachines suck <-- My biggest reason!

I've owned a T2682 for years. I hate it! It literally fell apart around me. From the failing DVD-ROM to the mouse turning green, the thing just barely survives in my sister's bedroom now.

eMachines uses sub-standard hardware so they can sell cheap. This isn't a suggestion I normally give, but I'd suggest getting another computer when it's financially feasible. I promise you, the cost you will spend on replacements and repairs will dwarf the initial cost of purchase. I've spent over $300 on my $400 eMachine, just trying to keep it alive. I actually kinda like eMachines, but mostly because they're decent computers...for that price. eMachines are more like starter computers. As much as I liked mine, I can't really argue with Dilbert because mine crapped out just like yours. In both of our cases, I think it's a motherboard problem. You could try replacing it, but it's like an old car: you'll just have to keep spending money on it to replace parts when you should be saving up for a new computer. Computers aren't cheap, I know, but you would be better off with a new one. Then you could slave your eMachines hard drive and put the RAM in your new computer. It's not much of a boost, but it's better than throwing them away.

But yeah, it's entirely up to you. You can try a new motherboard until you're able to afford a new computer, but keep in mind that other things will start failing soon. Your CD drive is probably next, if it hasn't already GONE south.EMachines are known to have PSU issues...you are testing it with another EMachines PSU.
I'm not convinced it's the MBoard yet...You can get any type/manuf board as long as the slot fits your CPU type....i'd buy a new PSU while i was at it as well...

Solve : I get a Blue Screen!! and system has to be reset to restart! Help!!?

Answer»

I have this problem for a year now.. i jus SAW this forum. can u help me. out.

I have P4 2.4 Ghz Intel 845GVSR motherboard.. and i when ever i start my system i get stuck with a blue screen saying some thing for a half a page and i have restart it again.. and after that no problem.. this is killing me..

Then after that i installed sevice PACK 2 and this problem seemed to go. but my system when it starts and then it automatically restarts and then gets logged on...

help me.. ppl..
So, the current problem is that it reboots once, then works OK?yes. its automatically reboots and it works.. fine...

thanks for the reply can u help me. more. im not able to say or show coz.. its for short period and not able to read wat the screens reads..Based on what I'm READING in this thread, and the other threads you've made/posted in, I think it may be a good idea to back up all important files and reinstall Windows from scratch. If you choose to do that, you'll need (after backing up) to use either your Restore Disk (if this is a pre-built) or a WinXP install disc.

"Windows is like a sleazy hotel in Vegas. Every day, the floor sags more and more, until eventually it collapses. But it's easy to burn the hotel down and rebuild."

--Internet
No I have tried a 20 times reinstalling.. the problem is not with my OS i think.... and i also have this beep its goes on.. until i switch of my computer. and if i reconnect my hard disk this works fine.. and later sometime.. this starts of again...I did not know that. Okay, that rules that one out.

Other than that, I can think of a few things that may be possible candidates. Your power supply could be malfunctioning, though this is unlikely. I'm no expert on PSUs but it's possible that there could be a small power anomaly that is worked around the second attempt. It's very unlikely, maybe even flat out impossible, but I don't want to rule it out.

Another possibility is that the motherboard itself is malfunctioning in a similar fashion to how I described the power supply failing. This is much more likely, and would explain all the blue screens and rebooting. (Did you also say that even now, after rebooting, it will stop working after a while? If so, then this furthers my suspicion that it is the mobo.)

The only other thing I can think of is that there's damage to the memory chip, and whenever Windows tries to do ANYTHING with it, it reboots. (Probably not.)

There is one other thing I thought of as I type, and it might be the cause: It could be that your IDE cable, connecting the hard drive to the motherboard, has a problem. Either it's not perfectly seated on one end, or one of the wires is shorting.

The two I'm going with are either Motherboard or IDE cable. Luckily, if you want to get another IDE cable, it's only about $5.00, and we both probably know how EXPENSIVE it would be to get another mobo. The IDE cable means u mean to change the strip of cable is it.What I am saying is that the cable that connects the hard drive to the motherboard MIGHT be defective. I'd wait to do anything until I get a second opinion in here, though; see what others have to say. yeah.. need to see wat others say.. can u suggest me.. some upgrades fro my system....

im on for gaming.. a mid range.. 1.. Sounds like Dilbert hit most if not all of the possible issues here. Can you:

Reseat the memory chips / try another power supply / have a spare hard drive you can install the operating system on to see if it's the hard drive?

Alan <>< yeah i have done them im using a new hard disk.. and reseating things i have done it too.... i can go out of that.. problem possibly i can take a photo.. can send it down here .. hope some 1 can help

Solve : Display driver not working?

Answer»

I don't how to fix this. My computer hardware driver is a Radeon 9200 and when I play this graphics heavy game after a while everything turns black and I get an error message saying Your Windows Display Driver has stopped working and gives me a note saying the ati2dvx driver has stopped functioning normally or something like that. Then everything freezes and the only thing I can do is reboot. How can this be fixed? Do I need a new driver? I have a Windows XP Home Edition. Whats the most effective method to prevent these screen blackouts and failed driver from happening again?

I did check ATI's website and am downloading

Catalyst® 6.11 Display Driver for Windows XP Professional/Home Edition

but I have not yet installed it. I don't know if its safe to install this and if this can prevent the failure from happening again. Advice please.

And FYI the technical data from the error says this:

C:\DOCUME~1\CompUSA\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER94f0.dir00\Mini032907-03.dmp
C:\DOCUME~1\CompUSA\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER94f0.dir00\sysdata.xml
Have you tried the ATI uninstaller tool,before you
install new drivers?

http://drivers.softpedia.com/get/Other-DRIVERS-TOOLS/Others/ATI-The-Catalyst-Uninstaller-10.shtmlI've had this problem, back when I was an ATI guy (Never again )

This problem would occur in many games for me, mostly in World of Warcraft, at certain points in the game (funny, I know) I did two things to try and solve this.

First, as street stated, I un-installed and re-installed new drivers; but to no avail.

Second, I resorted to lowering all my video settings as I approached that point in the game (Nef's Lair for WoW nerds ). This seemed to make the problem leave for good.

Are there certain points in your game where this happens? If so, try lowering your settings before this stage.

Later on I switched to Nvidia anyhow

Scratchy advise, but thats how I fixed it

Mike Yeah this is really frustrating I can't play my fav gmaes when this screen blackout and freeze happens just a minute into the game!

I've played Far Cry (with the best quality not performance settings) that requires
• Supported OS: Windows 98SE/2000/XP (only)
• Processor: AMD Athlon 2400-3000+ or Pentium 4 2-3 GHz
• RAM: 512-1024 MB
• Video Card: 128 MB GeForce 4 128 MB to GeForce FX 5950; ATI Radeon 9500-9800 XT
• Sound Card: Sound Blaster® Audigy® series
• DirectX Version: DirectX 9.0b (included on disc)
• CD-ROM: 8x-16x DVD or 32x CD-ROM
• Hard DRIVE Space: 4 GB
• Multiplayer: Broadband with 64 Kbps upstream to play (512 Kbps upstream to host 8 players)
NVIDIA® nForce™ or other motherboards/soundcards containing the Dolby® Digital Interactive Content Encoder required for Dolby Digital audio

and I also played FEAR too that requires:
• Pentium® 4 3.0 GHz or equivalent processor
• 1 GB RAM
• A 256 MB Radeon® 9800 Pro or GeForce™ FX 5900 or equivalent supported
• DirectX® 9 compliant video card with hardware T&L and pixel shader 2.0 support
• Sound Blaster® X-Fi™ series sound card

Supported Chipsets:
• NVIDIA® GeForce™ 4 Ti series, GeForce™ FX 5900 series, 6600 series, 6800 series, 7800 series
• ATI™ Radeon® 9000 Series, Radeon® 9500 Series, Radeon® 9600 Series, Radeon® 9700 Series, Radeon® 9800 Series, Radeon® X600 Series, Radeon® X700 Series, Radeon® X800 Series, Radeon® X850 Series

The problem is I don't even know if I have all the stuff they ask for since I don't know how to check on my system. But can someone tell em which graphics card I should buy that will allow me to play these games on HIGHEST quality performance settings since I really do not want to lower my settings for these games. I saw some computer techs who played these games before but when they played it on their computer it ran as smooth as silk (it was like a movie on their computer!) while my PC has choppy frames at best and a slow moving slideshow of pictures at worst when I run these games at the highest setting.An old video card may not be the only thing holding your system back, I need to know what hardware is running in your system.

I believe there is a program called Everest that lets you look into the hardware of your system, I'm gonna have to ask around to confirm it or wait for someone that knows what i'm talking about to join the topic.

http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4181.html

Here is the link to download Everest. Running this should give you a hardware run over.

Also, to check your RAM and Processor by hand:
Go to My Computer -> Control Panel -> System, and click on the "General" tab

To check your video card right click on your desktop, click on "properties" and click on the "Settings" Tab, it should show you your running GPU.

Post here on your findings

Eredell Everest is....Here

Late posts like mine suck...LOLLol, thanks street computer1000, have you run an Everest report? Alternatively, can you tell us the make and model of your computer?

Yes, you need to determine whether you have PCI Express, AGP, or perhaps only PCI. PCI Express and AGP are superior to PCI for video cards so go with PCI Express or AGP if that's available. And, of course, be sure to buy the appropriate type card; cards are made for specific slots (PCI Express, AGP, or PCI).

Does you computer meet the other requirements (processor and RAM)?Thanks I ran the everest and heres the report below. If you see any outdated programs that could be upgraded for better performance please let me know.

Solve : Configuration needed for two hard drives?

Answer»

I recently upgraded my primary hard drive which includes changing from IDE to SATA. I can get that to work on its own but I can no longer get my secondary IDE disk to be recognised.
I have a SATA converter for it and used it that way before but am lost as to the configuration needed.
Here's my set up:
ASUS motherboard, 1 IDE SLOT, 4 SATA slots.
Primary HD: SATA
Secondary HD: IDE with SATA converter
DVD drive: IDE connected to IDE slot

I can use the primary and DVD fine but am unsure which cables/slots to use and the jumper pin settings needed for the two HDs.
Your help is appreciated.Can't you connect your old HDD to the IDE port like your DVD drive is instead of using the converter?No because then it will appear in BIOS as being the master disk when I only have my music and back ups on there. The new HD will show as being a slave so the boot won't work.If it's an IDE HDD it has jumpers on it that if set properly designate it Master...or Slave...
Set the jumpers to Slave and it won't be trying to boot to it.So does that mean no jumper pins in the slave? What about in the SATA master? According to the label, the pins SEEM to work differently to IDE pins.
Edit: I've just tried different jumper settings.
The master SATA has the pin in the two left ones.
If I put no pin in the slave IDE and keep the pin in the DVD drive, it shows the slave as being the IDE master so won't boot.
If I have the DVD drive showing as IDE master, that won't boot either.
So the catch 22 seems to be that if it recognises both IDE drives (slave and DVD), it won't boot up as the SATA master can only appear below these two.The SATA doesn't need jumpers...
The IDE should be jumpered as Slave.It may help if the OP can provide the model number of the motherboard and the BIOS version. Then some here could find the manual and see what the user manual says.
Most modern systems will put the SATA as the preferred boot device.
The Bios should have a BOOT preference menu or setting.
The Motherboard is ASUS: P5KPL-AM EPU
BIOS is American Megatrends Inc. 0501

I'm not that knowledgeable with BIOS so if anything needs to change, I'd appreciate your help.Quote from: patio on September 26, 2015, 06:25:38 PM

The IDE should be jumpered as Slave.

This I don't get because with two IDEs, the slave is supposed to have no jumpers so surely I need one to be set to Master?For what it is worth. This is about the old IDE or PATA method.
The IDE thing was old technology. But modern motherboards still support it and it can be very useful if you have old drives laying around.
Which cable type is used for the IDE? There is the plain 40 wire cable. And there is the fancy 80 wire cable.
For the 40 wire cable, one must use master and slave pin settings. It is common practice to set a DC/DVD drive to slave, even if it is the only drive on the cable.
Some IDE drives have veery confusing pin settings. Look very carefully. You might have the drive upside down!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This should have noting at all to do with SATA. Because SATA cables are far different.
Hi Geek,
It's the 40 pin IDE cable. I can set the DVD to slave but it doesn't alter the problem with the 2 hard drives. The main problem is that if I connect both HDs to the SATA slots, with the converter on the slave HD, neither of them will get recognised and it won't boot.
This is when I haven't changed anything about the master HD config which will boot if it is connected independently from the slave.
Set the DVD to Master...and the HDD to slave...
Cable as follows: MBoard__________________Slave_____Maste r.Quote from: patio on September 28, 2015, 06:53:02 AM
Set the DVD to Master...and the HDD to slave...
Cable as follows: MBoard__________________Slave_____Maste r.
Sorry patio, but can you leave it to others to advise me? Setting the DVD to master will also mean it won't boot.I'll leave it to others at your request then...
My 1 PC boots fine with the above configuration.....Best of Luck.Lots of confusion on this thread. First off, setting an IDE drive to Master will not necessarily MAKE it the boot drive. Set the Boot order in the BIOS to tell the machine to boot from the SATA drive.
In an IDE configuration with 2 drives, one of them is designated as Master and the other as Slave, this has more to do with which is in charge RATHER than which the system will boot from. It would be possible to set the DVD drive as Master and the hdd as Slave and still boot from the hdd.
Just to add more confusion, it's also possible to set up the IDE drives using Cable Select in which the position the drive is connected to the cable determines the Master/Slave relationship.
Personally, I would set the hdd as Master, DVD as Slave, then set the boot order in the BIOS so that the SATA drive is the boot drive.
Solve : A8V Won't Boot?
Answer»
Hello All, Cleaned my computer the other day, after that computer
would not boot, there is a 12v 4 prong wire that hooks into board
it's the cpu votage wire when i take that off it turns everthing on,
but no video or beep codes, was working fine before the cleaning of
the dust, book says you need the wire to boot the board,weird it has
me stumped any help with this,thanks.Did you vaccuum this MACHINE by chance ? ?
Not a good idea.
Re-seat all cards, RAM, and cables and give it another go.It sounds LIKE you ESD your board cause the pc needs that so that it can send the data to the CPU and threw out the computer. TRY connecting that wire then REMOVE your RAM and try booting if you dont hear a single loud beep your board probably needs to be replaced and did you remove the CPU by chance?Quote
send the data to the CPU and threw out the computer.
"threw out" means throughout, right?
Solve : Hard drive malfunction?
Answer»
Hello there all. I was hoping you could help me out some. I think I will probably have to replace my hard drive, but maybe someone here can tell me otherwise. Out of the blue, my computer went black, and a DOS like screen came up. I turned off the computer and started it back up. I hit ESC to go to the boot menu and the hard drive wasnt even recognized. Is there anything I can do besides buy a new hard drive? And how can i go about getting files off of it before I dispose of the old one? Thanks.
On that 'DOS like screen', was there any message?
First thing you'll probably want to do: If you have access to another computer, put your current hard drive in it as a slave and see if it's recognized and try to get your files off it.
If the other computer doesn't see it too, the drive is probably dead, and there is no cheap solution to getting information off a dead drive.
Were you doing anything in particular at the time the computer died? Anything at all? Give as much information as possible, it really does help. there was no message posted on the DOS like screen. Prior to the meltdown, occassionaly the screen would go all white, or all black, or white with black stripes, and i would have to reboot. I had the computer on overnight, not doing anything active with it and when i woke up, that is when I found the DOS like screen. I have another computer, but it is a different type. The current one I am using now is an HP and my old one is a Sony, so not sure if I can slave to see what happens. I hope this helps you more.Should be able to, at least to get the info off the drive. We'll just be using the other computer to get the data off the drive since it still has a working OS.So most likely the hard drive is fried and will need to be replaced it would seem. I figured it would be. Thanks for the help. I will attempt the slave process this evening!The symptoms actually sound more like a video problem or possibly a failing PSU...
A few things you can do...all FREE.
Remove and re-seat the vid card.
Re-boot and see if things change.
DLoad and run the free diagnostics from the HDD manuf. website...this will tell you if indeed it is the drive failing.
Double check all drive cables are seated properly...
Borrow a known good PSU of the same wattage or greater and swap it in there.
As always when working inside the case remove all power sources and take ANTI static precautions...QUOTE from: patio on December 28, 2007, 09:55:54 AM
The symptoms actually sound more like a video problem or possibly a failing PSU...
Actually, it might well be a failing PSU. It would explain a lot of these symptoms, including hard drive not being found. Perhaps not enough power to get it up and running? Even the BIOS wouldn't see it then.
Still, it's not a bad IDEA to backup the information before PROCEEDING. Just in case.
Solve : print spooler service is not running and right click problems?
Answer»
Hey,
Thanks in advance for time and help!!
About my computer: Dell, DIM 2400, 2.66 ghz , 384 ram, WINDOWS XP SP2, 50 GB, file system NTFS
Anyway, I CANT print( to printer, pdf, or excel etc), add a printer, view server properties becuase there soemthing wrong with my printing spooler. dell pc tuneup was unable to fix it. I am not sure hwne this probelm started as i havent tried to print anything in a while but a few months ago i had a virus or some bug on my computer nad i tried quite a few different programs to get rid of it. one of those mightve TAKEN the spooling part with it.
ALSO, not sure if it is related but i cannot right click on the c drive ( i wanted to do this to run a disk check and maybe that will help it...which is why im mentioning it here)
any suggestions?? Thanks again!is this an uncommon problem??have you installed the printer drivers, before attaching the printer? this is the best way with XP and Vista
another thing to check is look into, Control Panel, Administrative tools, Services, click the standard tab at the bottom, then the Name tab at the top, this will sort the list into alphabetical order, go down the list until you find Print Spooler, click on "Print Spooler" and set Start up type to "Automatic" then click ok.
then close Services, Administrative tools, and Control Panel. and try printing again.
Hey sorry for not responding..finals time came and swept me away...
Anyways- i cant add a printer or do anythign with the printer i have or the cd....it just won't work its wierd...
When i tried the second thing ( i think this is the main problem)
I tried ot start the print spooler and got this :
"the dependency service or group failed to start"
Which is:
LexBce Service and a sub-field of that is Remote Procedure Call(RPC) and theres another line again with Remote Procedure Call(RPC)
Any ideas on how to proceed? Thanks for the help...this thing is very wierd
Momaybe a question I should have asked earlier is what printer are you trying to use?
are you using a Lexmark printer ?
have you used a Lexmark printer then installed a different manufacturers ?
In the services list you will also be able to see two items "Remote Procedure Call(RPC)" and "Remote Procedure(RPC)Locator"set both to automatic,
The other item "LexBce Service" is part of the Lexmark printer driver instalation system, it should be in the list again set to automatic.
some drivers and software are a bit stubborn and leave bits behind Lexmark's bogy is this lot
> lexpps.exe
> lex2kusb.dll
> lexbce.dll
> lexbcs.exe
> lexlmpm.dll
> lexp2p32.dll
> lexping.exe
search for all of them in the registry and delete any keys that show up "please take care while doing anything to the registry as deleting the wrong items can cause troubles"
if the driver of say a Canon or HP printer is installed after a Lexmark and any of the above are left behind the new drivers will be unable to be fully installed.
very often it happens because the printer was connected to the computer before the drivers were installed, in XP and Vista the drivers should be installed first before the component is connected or attached.
download this product it is a utility which attempts to remove all Lexmark driver components
from here, http://downloads.lexmark.com/cgi-perl/downloads.cgi?ccs=229:1:0:95:0:0&os_group=Windows%20XP&target=
any of the four shown should work but if you are unsure and if your printer is not shown search through the drivers for the correct printer and the UNINSTALLATION utility should be listed
or here
http://driverscollection.com/?file_id=23764
this webpage gives a list of the parts to be removed manually from the registry:-
Solve : FAX image now missing with all in one HP printer???
Answer»
When you would click on the HP PSC 950 printer ICON, 4 images would come up, FAX, scan text, scan image and copy.Now the fax part is gone. I can receive fax but not able to connect dialing out. Not sure when this started, we did switch our phone to cable, would this make a difference? I can maybe see it not working, but the image disappears? I TRIED reinstalling drivers and got all sorts of errors and messages saying everything is ALREADY installed. What should I do or what can I change?
Solve : Really Weird :/ Please help!?
Answer»
Hi guys!
I just got a new computer, my friend built it yesterday.
Now the thing is that when i started battlefield 2, worked normally and i changed the resolution and video settings to high, and went playing,
after 20 seconds it freezed, but that problem is not a matter anymore since i change the gpu's fan to 100% it dosent happend, but still kinda strange that you have to change the fan speed on a 8800gts 320mb for it to work with BF2 on high settings
Another thing, when i was exitting nfs carbon, after chaning some GRAPHICS settings, the screen went black and computer freezed, had to reset.
Third thing, when running 3dmark06, always freezes, tried it 3 times, freezes at some point.
Oh and while im here i might ASK another thing; I have a mousepad with blue NEON hlow AROUND and 4 usb ports on the side, and it keeps on glowing even when the computer is turned off?! (didnt happend with old computer)
The specs:
Intel q6600 go (Not overclocked) & thermalright ultra 120+scythe s-flex
manli 8800 gts 320 mb (Not overclocked)
Asus P5N32-E SLI
2gb ddr2 800mhz
Thermaltake toughpower 750w
antec 900 case
Could this have to do anything with the drivers? (im quite sure i updatet the gpu's driver), and while disgussing drivers, does anybody know a FREE good
program for downloading drivers??
Thank you very much!!If that vid-card is still new and under warranty i would return it immediately for a replacement...Can you already be sure that "it is broken" ? Beacuse hl2 seems to be working (tested for a few minutes)
Can this all have to do that i have the same hard drive as i had in my old hp pavilion computer?
Because i noticed that when i ran some free driver program it found some drivers for geforce 6600 and 8800 (6600 old, ofcourse)
and fo amd 3400+ and intel q6600
I think im first gonna try with re-installing xp for all the old drivers and stuff to go away.
Good idea?A clean install certainly won't hurt...remember to assemble/collect all your other drivers such as MBoard etc. before starting.What exactly do you meen with that? I have the gpu's and the mobo's drivers on two different cd's.As long as you have ALL your drivers ready you should be good to go...its a good idea to download the latest drivers from Nvidia, then burn them on a CD. that will save you some time if you plan on reinstalling XP.
Quote
Beacuse hl2 seems to be working (tested for a few minutes)
testing for a couple of minutes is not accurate, i would recommend at least 30 minutes of playing before drawing any conclusions.
in my opinion, regarding your GPU problem, it sounds as though it is overheating. have you verified that your GPU fan is, in fact, working correctly? also, what are the temps on your card?
Solve : Mobo in IDE mode by mistake Drives are SATA What now.?
Answer»
Hi. Ist time here so please bear with me. I have upgraded my PC and installing XP "clean".Basically I have a Intel® Desktop Board DP35DP and 3 SATA drives. The board has no floppy input but does not COME with the SATA drivers which are provided on a (you guessed it) Floppy Disc. The mobo instructions for installations are only AVAILABLE on line and I only have this one PC so I had none but it should be basic. I WOUND up installing XP with the bios set to IDE instead of SATA and now that I can get on line I see that this setting cannot be changed to SATA without crashing Windows. Intell does not suggest changing it. I have two Questions.
1- Does this reduce drive performance since different drivers are used.
http://www.intel.com/support/motherboards/desktop/sb/cs-020811.htm#pata
2- If the answer to 1 is yes how can I change to SATA? I really do not wish to start over with a
clean install if I can avoid it. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated because I need all the speed I can get.
Intel« Core2 Quad Processor Q6600
Intel® Desktop Board DP35DP
1-300g Seagate Barracuda SATA (Boot Drive)
2-500g WD Caviar SATA drives.
1-250g WD Caviar IDE drive (old boot drive from older mobo also XP.)
Windows XP pro 32bit SP2 version 2002
Kahoona
Copy the Seagate drivers to a CD.
Re-install XP. Very early on in the setup you will see a prompt "F6 for SATA/RAID drivers"
At this point put in the CD and point XP there...
After the SATA drivers are installed replace the XP CD to continue.Dang you Patio, beat me to it.
Patio's right though, you're gonna need to reinstall XP with the drives set properly. I don't think there is any other easier way.Only by 1.2 seconds.....
OK I have to just grin and bear it and reinstall XP. Do you think I can do a repair or upgrade install and not have to start over?
KahoonaNo matter what you decide to do you will have to follow the above procedure for Windows to recognise the SATA drive...
Solve : New computer rebooting before windows....?
Answer»
So I got a 2.66 dual core PROCESSOR, and a intel dp35dp motherboard, a 8600gt video card, and a new power supply that I installed yesterday.
When I go to start the computer it runs through the black screen, it seems like it goes pretty fast. Before it is about to go to the windows log on screen it will reboot any ideas?Try resetting your memory. That can cause that to happen. Any blue screens?nope no blue screens, is it possible that my powersupply is not high enough? its a 500w. Ill try the ramram not the answer, i replaced, and bios shows that they are there. I have the harddrive plugged into a ribbon cable that is also going to the cd-rom drive is that ok?Double check all your connections.
Remove the CD drive temporarily if it's the only IDE channel you have ...if not move it to the other IDE channel by itself.
Other causes :
MBoard shorting out...check to see if all standoffs were used.
Thermal Compound...not used or applied improperly...travel to Arctic Silvers site for instructions.
Bad RAM...test with MemTest.
HDD...you cannot simply move a hard drive running any version of Windows later than ME and expect it to boot. The OS is tied to the hardware it was installed on.
Vid card....use the onboard video for now to eliminate the card as a suspect....The processor did not come with any thermal compound, but probably has ( i didnt look) a tape thingy under the heatsink.
I noticed in BIOS that the harddrive was set to "raid" but changing that to ide showed there was no harddrive connected.
I was looking at my cpu temp and it is at about 45 C at idle. in the manual it STATES it should be around 38 C .
Also iam pretty noobish what are the standoffs?Quote from: royalpuma on December 24, 2007, 10:58:56 AM
I have the harddrive plugged into a ribbon cable that is also going to the cd-rom drive is that ok?
i strongly suggest seperating those, that may be the problem. i would also strongly suggest a SATA harddrive as you only have one IDE input that can only support 2 devices.
an added note, the PSU is not the problem, 500W is more than enough.Is this a pc you have just built? If you have checked the ram and H/D then it could be your mother board or you mighit need a BIOS update. its not your power supply.Quote from: royalpuma on December 24, 2007, 05:43:34 PM
The processor did not come with any thermal compound, but probably has ( i didnt look) a tape thingy under the heatsink.
You really need to check this ASAP. If the heat SINK came with thermal paste pre-applied (as "tape") it might be COVERED with a piece of clear plastic to protect the thermal compound. This plastic needs to be removed before installing the heat sink.
If the heatsink didn't come with any thermal compound you will need to buy some. Else the processor will overheat. We could be looking at a Decent new build going up in blue smoke here pretty soon...
RP have you ever built a machine before ? ?
When you connect Bluetooth devices, it has to make a pairing (or connection). Is it doing this successfully?Microsoft wireless bluetooth elite set COMES with a transceiver that you connect to a usb port on your comp. i believe this is how i get bluetooth connection. when i run the installation Cd the setup wizard installs the required software after software setup is complete,the bluetooth connection guide automatically opens to help you connect your bluetooth devices.I go threw the whole setup step by step successfully everything indicates devices are enabled and ready to use with no problems but like i said i get nothing from keyboard or mouse no responce.The other comp. that i hooked it up to worked just fine as soon as setup was complete the mouse and keyboard worked but not on mine,is there something other than the transceiver that i need to have in order to have a bluetooth connection or is the transceiver what allows you to have bluetooth connection?
Solve : what is a bad pool header?
Answer»
Does anyone know what a bad pool header means
thanks,Windows XP Service Pack 2 is usually a good THING. However, it's not without it's problems. Most notably is it's crashing of more 'sloppily' written drivers. If you're now experiencing the BAD_POOL_HEADER Blue Screen Of Death on BOOTUP and have a NetGear wireless network card in your machine, then remove it. More than likely this will allow you to boot. I've also heard of some LinkSys wireless network cards causing this same error as well. As of the writing of this article, there are no new drivers from either LinkSys or NetGear. I've also been unable to find any support on their site about the issue. If your NetGear card uses the Atheros chipset, then you may be able to use those drivers to GET back up and running.
Note: If you still can't boot even with the card REMOVED, or into safe mode, you'll need to use the recovery console to disable the driver.
The Indexing Service will, on occasion, also cause SP2 to crash. I suspect that machines that start to exhibit this symptom after having SP2 installed have greater UNDERLYING issues. Anyway, to stop the indexing service from running, then click Start->Run type services.msc, and click OK.
Indexing Service BAD_POOL_HEADER
Double click the Indexing Service and set the startup type to either manual, or disabled. By default, I believe it's manual. (You'll notice on this machine it's not running, and is set to manual. I haven't changed the setting at all. Also, this machine is running SP2) If your machine BSOD's upon bootup, then you'll likely have to boot to safe mode to change this. You can also disable the Indexing Service using msconfig, however, it's generally better practice to do it the services.msc way.
Solve : Mixing Memory?
Answer»
Hey everyone, I bought some new memory for my computer and made sure that the timings matched. The original memory in the computer was 5-5-5-18 but could run optimal at 4-4-4-12. The brand for that memory is Adata DDR2 800. The memory I bought is Crucial Ballistix DDR2 800 with timing of 4-4-4-12. So I went into BIOS and changed the speed to 4-4-4-12. Now they both match as far as timings go. Computer BIOS comes up, says 4gig 4-4-4-12 2T and Windows Vista starts to come up. Then, blue screen telling me that new added HARDWARE or software is the problem and should remove the newly added software or hardware.
Any ideas? I've already tried every setting in the book. I got it to come up with a very high speed setting but will not run it that high. Plus it was very unstable. Thanks for the help.
OK, went a little further with this. I upgraded the BIOS to the newest and it made no difference. I also decided to stagger the memory. Ballistix, the Adata. If I leave just to 2 in the computer runs FINE. When I put the other 2 in it blue screens and restarts. I take one out to leave just the 3gig and it Blue screens and restarts. I guess I should also mention that I had no problems running this memory in XP.
Computer Specs
E6750
(2) XFX 8500GT Professional Series 512meg Video running in SLI
2gig RAM
Window Vista Business x64 OK, update. I tried one kind of memory in one slot and the other in a different slot. That ended up failing after about 15 minutes with a blue screen. Any ideas at this time would be great. Thanks.
It's foolish to mess around with RAM timings especially with mis-matched RAM...you're only asking for trouble.
Re-set to the default settings and ADD one stick at a time and see what happens...Ok, foolish is kind of harsh. I have already said that the memory is in specs with each other. There should be no reason they shouldn't WORK together. Now, can anyone give me a "good" reason why they may not work together? Thanks for the help.
A good reason is exactly what Patio was getting at. By changing the timings in your BIOS, you've tried to overclock the slower RAM. Overclocking RAM is quite an unstable thing to do, if you don't know exactly what you're doing, which by the sounds of it, you fall squarely into that category.
Now, if it were me, and I'd been foolish and changed the latency settings of my RAM in my BIOS without knowing what I really was doing, I'd now do as he said, reset the memory settings to default and try the RAM sticks one at a time.Thanks for all the help guys. The funny part is I'm running the slower memory right now with the higher settings and it's running with no problems. That's why I don't understand when putting in the faster memory it doesn't work. As of right now I have tried one stick at a time and it didn't work. I tried different timings and as long as I leave one brand or the other in together it works fine. So that's where I'm at right now. Running the slower memory at a higher speed with no problems at all.
Solve : Backup Hardware?
Answer»
Just purchased and external harddrive Seagate FreeAgent USB 2.0 250 GB, there are no instructions in the box as how to use it, just how to hook up the cables. Anyone know how to use this to backup my Win XP complete SYSTEM, thanks.Once you have installed the hard drive (i.e. connected it up) it will show up as an EXTRA HDD in WINDOWS Explorer/My Computer.
You can then drag and drop or copy and paste files onto the drive to make sure you have a copy of them there as well as on your PC.
If you want to back up your entire system, including the OS, your files, and all your settings, you will need a program such as Acronis TrueImage (which I highly recommend).
This can be trialled for 30 days, after which you will have to buy it (it's not too expensive).
You can then follow the instructions to create an "IMAGE" of your system drive onto the external drive, preserving everything just as it was.
This can be easily updated, and restored when necessary.
Hope this helps.Thanks for the help, I'll download it and try it out.Purchased Acronis TrueImage it worked easily, thanks again.Under the Tools options in Acronis there is an option to "Verify Images"....
Make sure you do this with your backups before burning them to CD/DVD.
Nothin more aggravating than counting on an archive that has errors.
Congratulations on your choice...Acronis has saved my Bacon more times than i could count ...
P.S. It may sound as if i'm biased towards Acronis...but i've used and tested them all thru the years. You made the right choice.You're more than welcome, 06Honda.
patio also has a good point, the verify image option has saved me burning bad images several times now.
I've been a fan of Acronis too, recommended to me here actually.
I did use Norton Ghost, but I could never get the hang of it.
Acronis all the way.
It just might be the moniter itself because from what I'm hearing your moniter seems like its pretty old. Its not a flat screen is it??? I know a moniter that does the exact same thing with the Red, Green, and Blue boxes that come up at my school. We use them to do graphic arts and other stuff. They're pretty crappy, but back to the point.
Its probably the moniter, and the video card should be fine. Your moniter is probably too old just go buy a new one. A flat LCD screen is a great deal.
Solve : Installing new cartridge in printer?
I use WIN XP and a Dell 720 printer. I inserted a new black cartridge and
proceeded with the installation. When I enetered the required information
in the window that appears when a cartridge is replaced, the arrow to move on to printing would not HIGHLIGHT, and I could not proceed.
Has anyone ever experienced anything like that?Roughly I had the same problem on an Xp machine, i just exited out of the wizard and RAN a test page of my own. Not sure why it would freeze, but i have had no problems since. Maybe this will help
RichardNo. If I TRY to print something, the same window or popup or whatever
those are called appears and I am unable to advance .
I tried removing and reinserting the cartridge several times.
I don't know if it could be a physical problem with the printer or a software problem.OK, problem solved. On the advice of a Staples rep, I removed both cartridges
and then on the installation form indicated that I was installing an old color one and a new black one and it WENT ok.
I had not been clicking both little circles for the color one.
Solve : CRT Monitor Problem?
Answer»
I have a 19" Compaq MV940 CRT monitor with a display problem. The overall screen has become MUCH darker and there are white lines (not just a single ghost reflection, but continuous white lines) that extend from each and every line of text and most images all the way to the right of the screen. The text and images are still legible and usable ....but it is pretty distracting. I tried many many options with my NVIDIA settings. I was able to GET the "darkness" fixed but at the expense of vibrancy. I could live with this problem.....but the white images remain no matter what I do with NVIDIA settings. I plugged this CRT into my LAPTOP to see if this might be a problem w/ my video card in my desktop.....but when I plugged the CRT into my laptop, the CRT still displayed these problems......so I the problem is with the monitor...or perhaps the cable. I would try to REPLACE the cable except it plugs into the monitor INSIDE the monitor....there is no EXTERNAL plug so that I can replce the cable myself. I welcome any thoughts or suggesions. Thanks!chances are, that it is not going to be the cable but the monitor itself. i would simply suggest a new monitor, perhaps an LCD one.
Solve : No DVD-ROM?
I have a Compaq Presario...
512 MB DDR SDRAM mem; 80 GB DMA hd. I use Windows XP.
I haven't used my DVD-ROM for probably 3-4 months. Last night I tried to install a new program and also tried running MUSIC CDs but found it inoperable. The indicator light goes on, and I can hear it running but it is otherwise dead, with no error message whatsoever.
About a month ago I got rid of a virus which perhaps this may be a lingering result of.
Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated... LarryA virus won't affect hardware...
Travel to Device Manager and LOCATE the drive in the listing...right click it and SELECT remove/uninstall.
Re-boot the machine and TRY it again.
If it doesn't work you need to swap it into another machine to see if the drive has failed.Sorry for the delay, had to leave for a while...
It seemed like it un-installed OK, but obviously takes it upon itself to reinstall as I get a reminder that "a new program has been installed" without me prompting it to do so. It also indicates that the DVD-ROM running properly...nevertheless the problem still exists...
If you're listen to MUSIC a lot and really aren't satisfied with your sound, that would be a valid reason for installing an add-on sound card. Or, perhaps you play certain games where sound is a major element and you want better sound. Also with Win2K.
A dedicated sound card does take the work off the CPU when playing sounds, however it's not usually much of a burden for modern CPUs.
One specific area where a dedicated sound card rocks the socks off onboard sound is in gaming - much better sound quality and directional positioning (even with 2.1 sound like me, it's useful to know what side an enemy is on) plus potentially better frame rates.
If you play a lot of games, or really like your music to sound good, a dedicated card is a great investment.
Just avoid the Audigy SE and the X-Fi Xtreme Audio cards.
I restarted my computer to see if this would fix it.. instead it made it worse.. now Vista doesn't even find my sound card even if it's on my mother board, the Windows sound options tells me i have no sound devices installed even though i have both working speakers and a working microphone plugged in (tested them on a different computer and they work).
I have tried checking my sound card in BIOS (tells me it's working and is activated), installed/uninstalled/reinstalled Realtek sound drivers and mother board drivers several times with no luck. The drivers INSTALL successfully, but nothing happens after i restart. I have uninstalled the only THING in the Device Manager that has anything to do with sound, "High DEFINITION Audo-Controller".. it gets reinstalled when i restart my computer, Vista actually detects this.. but nothing happens and i still have no sound.
Any ideas? if you need more information about my computer feel free to ask.. this problem is getting annoying, i've done anything and everything i can think of.. I'm afraid, you may need new sound card (how old is your computer?), but let me ask you this...
While updating sound drivers, was it self-installing file, or you updated it through Device Manager?My computer is brand new, 4 MONTHS old or so.. it was self-installing. I almost figured i need a new sound card Quote
it was self-installing
In that case, try to go to Device Manager, right click on your sound card, and click "Update driver", then point Wizard to the folder where you downloaded/expanded new driver.
If that doesn't work, and your computer is 4 months old, send it back for repair/replacement.
Solve : Laser Printer Recommendations?
Answer»
I'm looking to upgrade my inkjet printer to a MULTIFUNCTION laser printer for my home office. I WANT excellent PRINT quality for b/w and color GRAPHICS; however, I'll be doing little to no photograph printing. I'll also be doing COPYING and scanning, but no faxing. Wireless capability would be great.
Recommendations??
Solve : critical error?
Answer»
My computer shuts down and then when rebooting i get a blue screen that gives me an error MESSAGE that some hardware is not functioning proper.
The o/s i use is WINXP i have an Epox 8KHA/+ mother board, this board as a diagnostic card built in which gives FF read out according to the manual this could be an inappropriate add on card or a faulty motherboard.
Ive stripped the computer down and powered up the mother board and still get the same fault which suggest it is the motherboard that is faulty.
What i cant understand is the computer works fine in between the shut downs.
I also have ante virus SOFTWARE provided by my internet server which when i run the scan is gauranteed to shut the computer down.
Ive thought of taking the cpu out cleaning and REPLACING the thermal paste
can any one RECOMMEND a substance for cleaning the cpu.
Or can anyone come up with an answer for this problem.
Thanks in advance jhaddWhat is the exact error message you're receiving? "Some hardware" isn't very descriptive.Important Thermal Paste Guidelinesre nstall your operating SYSTEM problem solvedQuote from: kartic9765 on December 22, 2007, 05:35:19 AM
re nstall your operating system problem solved
How can you know that's the problem when we don't even know what the error is or what hardware it involves?
Before jumping to conclusions, it's wise to get more information. The solution to everything is not reinstalling the OS.Im sorry ive not got back before now the computer is still shutting down and rebooting but without going to the blue screen with the error message as soon as it does i will post the message .
thanks again jhadd
Solve : Can't get rebuilt computer to boot?
Answer»
I've been all over the INTERNET trying to find help with this particular problem. I have built 2 computers before and THO I'm not an expert I have a good idea of what I am doing. Here is the problem. I am trying (have been trying for some time) to get my sisters computer up and running again (one I built). It just went dead, wouldn't power on or anything. I tried changing the power supply, nothing. So I took it home and ordered a new case with yet another power supply, hoping it was just a bad switch. When I put the board in and turned on the power supply switch everything started humming along immediately, but no video. She said she had also been having that problem where the computer would power on but the screen was blank. I managed to get it to come on all the way by fiddling with it once, but never again. Soooo...
Since i have ordered another motherboard, another video card, another hard drive(nothing to do with the problem obviously). So I sit here with two motherboards, two cases, two power supplies, two sticks of memory to try, two video cards, and no matter what combination I try I get the same thing.
When I turn on the power supply switch everything starts spinning. Fans go, I can hear the hard drive spinning, but no video. And I can't get it to shut off using the tower power on and off switch. I am relatively sure I have the panel connectors correct as I have manuals for both boards. I have cleared cmos umpteen times. It would make me feel better if I could at least get the board to shut back off, or wait for me to turn it on with the tower switch so I get some sneaky suspicion that the reason it's not booting has to do with how it's powering on (the atx soft power switch??) but I can't seem to find any posts anywhere about similar symptoms. If everything is hooked up correctly it shouldn't be turning on with the power supply switch, should it?
Any suggestions would help. One board is a kt7a-raid, the other a FIC AZ31. I don't think that matters much tho as I think I must be missing something here. The power supplies should be powerful enough to boot the computer up. Thanks for any help ayone can give, I'm running out of hairs to pull out.When you power it on, does the monitor say "No input signal"?
Have you tried a different monitor and monitor cable?Tho I only have one monitor I'm sure it works because I can hook it up to my own computer (which unfortunately is newer and no help whatsoever swapping out memory, processors, etc whioch are all incompatible with the one I'm trying to fix) and it works perfectly. It doesn't say no input signal during my attempts to boot up, but then it doesn't say it when its turned on but not hooked up to anything either. Then the screen just GETS green. No, it just stays black when hooked up to the turned on computer. But it is pretty OLD as well and not very intuitive.I've seen this type of thing before, and my thought is that it's a bad video card, or the video card is not seated correctly in the pci slot.
If that doesn't work, then try reseating your memory sticks.
try that out and let me know what happens.
thanks,
solotekk
I have a similar problem on my computer but my problem might be different because I couldn't get into CMOS. Can you get into CMOS? Does your motherboard has an integrated video card? If it does then try and see does it works or not before insert your AGP or PCI video card.
Strip the system of everything but the motherboard / video / RAM. Boot the system. Do you POST? If so, start adding one component at a time, STARTING with the keyboard, mouse, etc., until the system fails. Usually the last component installed is the culprit...though not always.
Solve : A Secret i want to find , HELP ME !?
Answer»
i had my hard disk partitioned last night and months ago , but when i do this , ( i mean after hard partitioning without any problems ) , again i see 8 Mb unpartitioned in the list , each time i do hard partitioning , i see this 8 Mb again and again !!!
i mean do u know what's this 8 Mb ??!
it seems nobody knows !!
what's the use of this 8 Mb that doesn't participate in partitioning ??
i don't really know ! who can tell ?? help me with this quickly please ... so did you partition with windows setup, diskmgmt, or fdisk, and also how big is the drive.
It might just be that whatever software you used (*cough* windows setup *cough*) excuse me, might only support partitions that are special multiples.
I wouldn't lose sleep over losing a mere 8MB of disk space, depending, of course, on your hard disk size.Probably a hidden partition containing the Drivers and the OS for the machine it shipped with...
Check your Owners Manual...It is actually a "feature". The XP setup reserves a little bit of space at the end of your disk in case you at some point DECIDE you want to convert the disk to a dynamic disk. The article I've linked to below says it can RESERVE between 1-8 mb but I've never seen it be less than 8 mb.
Here's a bit of reading on it:
about what u said and what i asked on that 8 Mb : my hard disk has 160 GB storage and please tell me the scientific reason that why this 8Mb created... what's the use of this 8 Mb can u say ? thanks for ur last replyQuote from: patio on December 19, 2007, 10:22:23 AM
there should be a scientific reason for that 8Mb i'm sure ,, can u say what's that for ?
thanks for ur last reply.If you've bothered to read my last post you would have seen I've already given you two LINKS directly from Microsoft that describe the how and why of that 8 mb partition.
Solve : Monitor output turned off?
Answer»
In desktop settings under advanced/display (XP), I accidentally turned off the monitor. Computer starts up but only has a black screen. How do I turn the monitor output back on?How exactly did you turn it off? I just tried disabling the monitor in the Device manager and I still picture on the screen.
have you tried starting the computer in safe mode?From the desktop, I click properties, then settings and advanced. From there, I click Dispalys. On the displays page, I clicked the upper corner of the monitor (on/off) button. It turned red. The frame would not let me out without clicking ok. Following this, the screen WENT black.
I started the computer in the safe mode. Still black screen with BLANK task bar. I can get to the desktop properties but not to the ATI advance screen. Still stuckAhh that option is something specific to the older ATI drivers. I'm raking my BRAIN here but I just can't remember a way of re-enabling the monitor without having to uninstall and reinstall the ATI DRIVER. You should be able to uninstall from safe mode and then access windows normally again to reinstall the driver.
Else wait and see if someone else have an easier SOLUTION.
